  1. It's good to see all of you. I would encourage you to open up your Bibles to 1 Timothy chapter 1.

    1 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  2. ! We'll begin our time in these next several weeks.

  3. Over the next 11 weeks, the plan is to move through this little letter, letter to Timothy,

  4. and to do it about two messages for each chapter.

  5. So it's going to be more of an overview than kind of a deep dive into this.

  6. But I think as we work our way through this letter, we'll be encouraged to see the things that really matter.

  7. And the things that will help us, you see the subtitle there, the things that will help us to have habits of a healthy church.

  8. What are those marks of a healthy church?

  9. Those characteristics, those features that will help us to be the kind of people that God wants us to be.

  10. You know, we live in a day and age where the world feels very unsettled.

  11. We live in a day and age where things seem to be topsy-turvy.

  12. Where things seem to be wonky, for lack of a better word.

  13. Where things are being, that we once believed were right, are being turned upside down,

  14. and are being painted in the light of being wrong.

  15. But even when it comes to the church, there seems to be confusion over things that we would call basic Christian doctrine.

  16. Let me give you some examples.

  17. Almost three out of four.

  18. Seventy-three percent.

  19. And by the way, this is evangelicals.

  20. People that go to churches like Maranatha across the country.

  21. Seventy-three percent claim that Jesus is the first and greatest created being.

  22. Now, I don't know about you, but that is problematic for us.

  23. For those who believe in Jesus as God, and especially in some of the readings that we had this morning about Colossians,

  24. where not only is he the head of the church, but he is the one who created all things.

  25. That by him, all things were created in heaven and earth.

  26. Fifty-eight percent believe that God accepts the worship of all religions, including Judaism and Islam.

  27. More than half, about 56 percent, agree that worshiping alone or with one's family is a valid replacement for regularly attending church.

  28. Now, again, when we think about the church and the makeup of the church,

  29. and as we're going to make our way through this study,

  30. Jesus as being the head of the church, having unified his people together and making us one body,

  31. in Christ we recognize the significance of our togetherness.

  32. Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together as the manner of some is.

  33. And so much the more, as you see the day approaching.

  34. More than half, about 55 percent, of evangelicals believe that the Holy Spirit is a force,

  35. but not a personal being.

  36. 55 percent believe that everyone might sin a little,

  37. but that we are all basically good by nature.

  38. Almost half, about 44 percent,

  39. believe that Jesus was a great teacher,

  40. but was not God.

  41. These are some of the doctrines

  42. that we would say would be essential,

  43. foundational,

  44. not just for Christian living,

  45. but foundational for true,

  46. saving relationship with Jesus Christ.

  47. And yet somehow,

  48. those so-called evangelicals,

  49. even in this day and age,

  50. as an evangelical world,

  51. we are caught up with the philosophies of this world,

  52. and captured away.

  53. And so this letter to Timothy becomes

  54. that much more significant and important for us

  55. as we begin to understand the significance

  56. of truth as it relates to the Word of God,

  57. and the essential pieces that God has put in place

  58. to help us to be the kind of people that God has called us to be.

  59. It's possible,

  60. and maybe even likely,

  61. that in hearing these statistics,

  62. it creates a measure of alarm in us.

  63. What are we to do?

  64. How are we to respond?

  65. What resources has God given to us

  66. in order to be the kinds of people that He has called us to be?

  67. As we make our way through this little letter of 1 Timothy,

  68. we're going to see that preeminently,

  69. God has given Himself.

  70. God has given Himself to the church

  71. that He will build the church,

  72. and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

  73. But God has also given us the resources

  74. of the Word of God,

  75. and the Spirit of God,

  76. and the people of God.

  77. That these beautiful privileges,

  78. and these beautiful gifts of God

  79. are given to us as His people

  80. to help us to understand

  81. who God is,

  82. and to be preserved in such times

  83. as we're living in today.

  84. As we think about the writing

  85. and the time of this little letter,

  86. 1 Timothy,

  87. we come to see some things

  88. in the beginning parts of this letter

  89. that will help us to understand

  90. that whatever Paul is writing about

  91. and whatever situation he's addressing,

  92. it is not the kind of situation

  93. that would have been true

  94. until after what we find in Acts chapter 20.

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  95. There, Paul had warned the church

  96. about a potential of heresy,

  97. a potential of doctrinal drift,

  98. but it hadn't yet happened.

  99. Acts chapter 20, verses 29 to 31 says,

    Acts 20:29–31

  100. I know, and he's speaking by the way,

  101. the Apostle Paul has gathered together

  102. the pastors,

  103. the elders of the church in Ephesus.

  104. He's meeting with them

  105. to kind of give them

  106. one last final pep talk, as it were,

  107. these parting words to encourage

  108. and challenge them

  109. in relation to their responsibility

  110. with the church.

  111. I know that after my departure,

  112. he says,

  113. fierce wolves will come in among you,

  114. not sparing the flock.

  115. And from among your own selves

  116. will arise men speaking twisted things

  117. to draw away the disciples after them.

  118. Therefore, be alert.

  119. Remembering that for three years,

  120. I did not cease night or day

  121. to admonish everyone with tears.

  122. Now, just to pause for a moment

  123. and to draw this out just a little bit,

  124. I want you to recognize the significance

  125. of what Paul is saying

  126. to these leaders of the church,

  127. these pastors of the church,

  128. these elders and spiritual authorities.

  129. He wants them to recognize,

  130. to be alert,

  131. because even within the midst

  132. of those spiritual leaders,

  133. there will become this tendency

  134. towards spiritual and doctrinal drift.

  135. And that's exactly what the Apostle Paul

  136. will write to Timothy about in this letter.

  137. The unthinkable has happened.

  138. The unimaginable is about to unfold.

  139. And the Apostle Paul is going to bring

  140. a strong word to Timothy

  141. to try to help to address this issue

  142. that the Apostle Paul had touched on

  143. with the elders many years before.

  144. We find throughout this letter

  145. this issue of doctrine and truth

  146. and set against the backdrop

  147. of what was being taught in the day.

  148. We'll come to see that through our study.

  149. And coming to 1 Timothy 3, verses 14 and 15,

    1 Timothy 3:14

  150. we begin to recognize

  151. that what God has given to the church

  152. to safeguard it from these kinds of things

  153. is the church itself.

  154. Notice in verses 14 and 15 of chapter 3,

  155. just kind of provides a brief purpose statement

  156. for this letter.

  157. Paul says to Timothy,

  158. I hope to come to you soon,

  159. but I'm writing these things to you

  160. so that if I delay,

  161. you may know how one ought to behave

  162. in the household of God,

  163. which is the church of the living God,

  164. a pillar and buttress of the truth.

  165. In other words, Timothy,

  166. I want you to know how to lead God's church

  167. so that it points to the living God.

  168. I want you, Timothy,

  169. to know the significance of the truth,

  170. that the church is the pillar

  171. and buttress of the truth.

  172. If it fails there,

  173. it fails everywhere.

  174. In the battleground,

  175. or the war for your faith,

  176. the war for salvation

  177. will be fought

  178. on the battleground of truth.

  179. And so,

  180. as we come to understand

  181. and recognize the significance

  182. of the church,

  183. we come to recognize

  184. the seriousness of truth

  185. and how that truth

  186. is meant to preserve

  187. and protect

  188. and help

  189. and guide

  190. its people.

  191. And what Paul will do

  192. at the very beginning

  193. of this little letter

  194. is to draw out

  195. some of those foundational truths

  196. that will help to orient Timothy

  197. and orient this listening church

  198. as they're listening to Timothy

  199. read this letter

  200. that Paul had given to him.

  201. Timothy will be reading this letter

  202. to the church

  203. and instructing both Timothy

  204. and this church

  205. on the things that matter.

  206. Paul will begin

  207. with those foundational truths

  208. right out of the gate

  209. and we'll see the first one

  210. in verse one.

  211. Remember the head of the church.

  212. Remember the head of the church.

  213. And who is the head of the church?

  214. Church family?

  215. Who is the head?

  216. Christ is the head of the church.

  217. Notice,

  218. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus,

  219. by the command of God,

  220. our Savior,

  221. and of Christ Jesus,

  222. our hope.

  223. To Timothy,

  224. my true child in the faith,

  225. grace and mercy

  226. and peace

  227. from God the Father

  228. and Christ Jesus,

  229. our Lord.

  230. The apostle Paul,

  231. as an apostle,

  232. wants Timothy

  233. to understand and recognize

  234. that he is a sent one.

  235. Paul is sent by Christ.

  236. Jesus is not only

  237. the head of the church,

  238. Jesus is the one

  239. who sends out

  240. his representatives

  241. and all the ministry

  242. that we do in the church

  243. is meant to be directed

  244. to Christ,

  245. governed by Christ,

  246. and oriented

  247. to the worship

  248. and glory

  249. of God in Christ.

  250. Paul,

  251. as a sent one,

  252. orients his entire

  253. life and being

  254. under the banner

  255. of sent one

  256. from Christ.

  257. first.

  258. And as Paul's pattern,

  259. he consistently

  260. orients his readers

  261. to recognize

  262. that while he may be

  263. the mouthpiece

  264. of the word of God

  265. to these churches,

  266. he wants them

  267. to understand

  268. where this word

  269. is coming from

  270. and who this word

  271. speaks about.

  272. So that in Romans

    Romans 1:1

  273. chapter 1,

  274. verse 1,

  275. Paul,

  276. a servant of Christ Jesus,

  277. called to be an apostle,

  278. set apart for the gospel

  279. of God.

  280. In 1 Corinthians 1.11,

  281. he says,

  282. Paul,

  283. called by the will

  284. of God

  285. to be an apostle

  286. of Christ Jesus.

  287. Galatians 1.1,

  288. Paul,

  289. an apostle,

  290. not from man

  291. nor through man,

  292. but through Jesus Christ

  293. and God the Father

  294. who raised him

  295. from the dead.

  296. In Paul's letter

  297. to the church

  298. of Ephesus,

  299. Ephesians 1.1,

  300. Paul,

  301. an apostle

  302. of Christ Jesus

  303. by the will of God.

  304. than in Philippians 1.1,

  305. Paul and Timothy,

  306. servants of Christ Jesus.

  307. Do you get the sense

  308. that the apostle Paul

  309. has come to recognize

  310. who really matters

  311. in his ministry?

  312. He has come to a place

  313. of recognizing

  314. that every part

  315. of his ministry

  316. is meant

  317. to please the Lord.

  318. That who he is

  319. as a person

  320. is because of the work

  321. of Christ

  322. in his life

  323. and so that the direction

  324. of his life

  325. and everything

  326. that Paul intends

  327. to accomplish in life

  328. is meant to point

  329. to the glory

  330. of Jesus Christ.

  331. I remember

  332. several years ago

  333. when I was asked

  334. to teach

  335. along with

  336. some people

  337. in Russia

  338. and there we were

  339. introducing ourselves

  340. and as was

  341. the custom,

  342. we tend to introduce

  343. ourselves by

  344. things about us,

  345. you know,

  346. my name is Andrew,

  347. I'm a pastor

  348. of Maranatha Baptist,

  349. I have six kids,

  350. I've been married

  351. for X number of years,

  352. I went to a certain,

  353. it was X number of years

  354. then it's different now,

  355. 27 years,

  356. 27 years,

  357. thank you,

  358. get that right.

  359. I can't do

  360. what Andy does,

  361. he does the months

  362. and days and hours,

  363. I don't have it factored,

  364. I'm good enough

  365. to get close enough

  366. to the years.

  367. but assigning

  368. certain qualities

  369. to who we are,

  370. designating ourselves

  371. by what we do

  372. rather than

  373. designating ourselves

  374. like what

  375. Paul does here

  376. and so we introduced

  377. ourselves as teachers

  378. and then

  379. we went around the room

  380. and each of the students

  381. introduced themselves,

  382. hi,

  383. my name is Andre

  384. and I'm a son

  385. of the living God,

  386. hi,

  387. my name is Vadim

  388. and I have been

  389. bought by the blood

  390. of Christ

  391. around and around

  392. and around the room.

  393. Their identity

  394. was directed

  395. to Jesus

  396. and what Christ

  397. has accomplished

  398. for them.

  399. Paul does the same

  400. thing here,

  401. Paul wants

  402. Timothy to know

  403. that the reason

  404. why he has ministry

  405. in the first place

  406. is because of what

  407. Christ has accomplished

  408. in his life

  409. and so that everything

  410. he does in ministry

  411. needs to be directed

  412. towards the glory

  413. of God.

  414. Why does Paul do this?

  415. Well,

  416. because the church

  417. belongs to Christ.

  418. It points to Christ.

  419. It's meant to obey Christ,

  420. to please Christ,

  421. to preach the message

  422. of Christ,

  423. to represent Christ

  424. in the world

  425. so that others

  426. can enjoy

  427. that same relationship

  428. through faith in Christ

  429. and forgiveness

  430. of Christ.

  431. The church

  432. is preeminently

  433. belongs to Christ.

  434. It's his body.

  435. as Paul will tell

  436. the church of Ephesus

  437. in Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1:22

  438. verses 22 and 23.

  439. He put all things

  440. under his feet.

  441. He gave him,

  442. speaking of Christ,

  443. as head over all things

  444. to the church,

  445. which is his body,

  446. the fullness of him

  447. who fills all in all.

  448. We could spend

  449. the rest of our time

  450. speaking about

  451. the beauty

  452. of Jesus Christ

  453. and unpacking

  454. the words

  455. that the apostle Paul

  456. puts here

  457. by the command

  458. of God

  459. our Savior,

  460. he says there

  461. in verse 1,

  462. and of Christ Jesus.

  463. Our hope,

  464. we could speak

  465. the rest of our time

  466. about those two

  467. words alone,

  468. the beauty

  469. of Christ

  470. and what he's accomplished

  471. for his church

  472. and for Paul.

  473. But I want to just

  474. press in a bit

  475. and unpack

  476. this word

  477. by the command

  478. of Christ,

  479. the command

  480. of Christ.

  481. This will become

  482. a continuing theme

  483. as we work our way

  484. through this letter

  485. of 1 Timothy.

  486. Thirteen times

  487. the apostle Paul

  488. will use words

  489. that point to command

  490. or urge

  491. or encourage

  492. or charge.

  493. These words

  494. that are laden

  495. with authority,

  496. laden with power,

  497. laden with direction

  498. and exhortation.

  499. These are the kinds

  500. of words

  501. that the apostle Paul

  502. will use for Timothy.

  503. This word here

  504. in verse 1

  505. is meant

  506. to describe authority,

  507. the authority

  508. that has been given

  509. by the apostle Paul

  510. through direct command

  511. of Christ

  512. and now delegated

  513. to Paul

  514. and to Timothy now

  515. to exert

  516. that same authority

  517. on behalf of Christ

  518. for his church.

  519. This word

  520. refers to a royal command

  521. that is not negotiable

  522. but is mandatory.

  523. Paul was following

  524. this non-negotiable

  525. command of God.

  526. This command of God

  527. to carry out ministry

  528. to the church

  529. as a sent one.

  530. We're going to see

  531. these kinds of words

  532. throughout our study

  533. in 1 Timothy.

  534. I've placed

  535. in your outline

  536. this morning

  537. a list of all

  538. of those examples,

  539. those places

  540. throughout this letter

  541. where these words

  542. are being used.

  543. Urge, command, charge.

  544. I want to briefly

  545. just walk through them

  546. so you get a sense

  547. of the authority,

  548. spiritual authority

  549. and leadership

  550. that Paul is exercising

  551. over Timothy

  552. and the kind of leadership

  553. and authority

  554. that Timothy

  555. is to exert

  556. over this church.

  557. Notice in chapter 1

  558. verse 3,

  559. I urged you,

  560. that is the first

  561. one of these words,

  562. I urged you

  563. when I was going

  564. to Macedonia,

  565. remain at Ephesus

  566. so that you may charge

  567. certain persons,

  568. that's the word command,

  569. certain persons

  570. not to teach

  571. any other doctrine.

  572. Then in verse 5,

  573. the aim of our command

  574. is love

  575. that issues

  576. from a pure heart.

  577. In verse 18,

  578. this command

  579. or this charge,

  580. he says,

  581. I entrust to you,

  582. Timothy,

  583. my child

  584. in accordance

  585. with the prophecies

  586. previously made

  587. about you.

  588. In chapter 2,

  589. verse 1,

  590. he says,

  591. first of all,

  592. then I urge

  593. or I command

  594. that supplications,

  595. prayers,

  596. intercessions,

  597. and thanksgivings

  598. be made for all people.

  599. In chapter 4,

  600. verse 11,

  601. he says,

  602. command and teach

  603. these things.

  604. Then in chapter 5,

  605. verse 1,

  606. he says,

  607. do not rebuke

  608. an older man

  609. but encourage him,

  610. that's the same word

  611. he's been using

  612. throughout,

  613. for urge

  614. or command them

  615. as you would a father.

  616. In chapter 5,

  617. verse 7,

  618. command these things

  619. as well

  620. so that you may

  621. be without reproach.

  622. In chapter 5,

  623. verse 21,

  624. in the presence

  625. of God

  626. and of Christ Jesus

  627. and of the elect angels,

  628. I charge you

  629. or I command you

  630. to keep these rules

  631. without prejudging.

  632. In chapter 6,

  633. verse 2,

  634. at the very end

  635. of that verse,

  636. it says,

  637. teach and urge

  638. or command

  639. these things.

  640. In chapter 6,

  641. verse 13,

  642. I charge you

  643. or I command you

  644. in the presence of God.

  645. And then finally,

  646. in chapter 6,

  647. verse 17,

  648. as for the rich

  649. in this present age,

  650. charge them

  651. or command them

  652. not to be haughty.

  653. You get the sense

  654. that the apostle Paul

  655. is exercising authority.

  656. This delegated authority

  657. that is issued

  658. from the command

  659. of God

  660. for the apostle Paul

  661. and the same authority

  662. exercised

  663. under the operation

  664. and instruction

  665. of God

  666. from his word

  667. to command

  668. the same things

  669. in the church.

  670. Paul's life

  671. and ministry

  672. pointed

  673. to the Lord Jesus

  674. and the life

  675. and ministry

  676. that we are all having

  677. wherever that ministry

  678. takes you.

  679. If that ministry

  680. takes you

  681. into the school,

  682. if that ministry

  683. takes you

  684. into the workplace,

  685. if that ministry

  686. takes you

  687. into your community,

  688. your neighborhood,

  689. wherever that ministry

  690. takes you,

  691. you must be

  692. a representative

  693. of Christ.

  694. How does the world

  695. see Christ

  696. in you?

  697. Paul was sent

  698. by Christ.

  699. In verse 2,

  700. we see that Timothy

  701. will be sustained

  702. by Christ.

  703. So while Paul

  704. is sent by Christ,

  705. he wants to encourage

  706. Timothy

  707. to understand

  708. that whatever

  709. strengthening,

  710. motivating,

  711. preserving power

  712. that Timothy

  713. will enjoy,

  714. it will come

  715. from one source

  716. and one source only,

  717. from Jesus Christ

  718. himself.

  719. Notice,

  720. to Timothy,

  721. my true child

  722. in the faith,

  723. grace,

  724. mercy,

  725. and peace

  726. from where?

  727. From God,

  728. the Father,

  729. and Christ Jesus

  730. our Lord.

  731. There's so much

  732. we could say

  733. about the relationship

  734. of the Apostle Paul

  735. to Timothy

  736. and how that all

  737. came about

  738. and how young

  739. Timothy was

  740. when he was

  741. kind of commissioned

  742. by his church

  743. and kind of given

  744. over to the Apostle Paul

  745. for the work

  746. of ministry

  747. and growing

  748. and learning

  749. and being established

  750. and the work

  751. of his,

  752. Timothy's mother

  753. and grandmother,

  754. Lois and Eunice

  755. and the work

  756. that they did

  757. to train up

  758. and raise Timothy

  759. in the right things.

  760. 2 Timothy 3.15

  761. says,

  762. and from a child,

  763. Timothy,

  764. you've known

  765. the Holy Scriptures.

  766. Well,

  767. who did that?

  768. Well,

  769. his mom and grandma

  770. did that.

  771. Lois and Eunice

  772. did that.

  773. From a child,

  774. you've known

  775. the Holy Scriptures

  776. that have made you

  777. wise to salvation

  778. through faith

  779. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  780. But in a very real sense,

  781. as a young man,

  782. Timothy was handed over

  783. to Paul

  784. to do ministry

  785. and to learn ministry

  786. from him

  787. and as a result

  788. of the investment

  789. of the Apostle Paul,

  790. there was this

  791. deep affection

  792. that happens

  793. between these two men

  794. and Timothy

  795. becomes useful

  796. for ministry

  797. so the Apostle Paul

  798. writes,

  799. in Philippians 2,

    Philippians 2:19–23

  800. verses 19-23,

  801. speaking and describing

  802. his usefulness.

  803. I hope in the Lord Jesus

  804. to send Timothy

  805. to you soon

  806. so that I too

  807. may be cheered

  808. by the news of you

  809. for I have no one

  810. like him

  811. who will be genuinely

  812. concerned for your welfare.

  813. No one like him

  814. who will care for you

  815. like Timothy

  816. for they all seek

  817. their own interests,

  818. not those of Jesus Christ,

  819. but you know

  820. Timothy's proven character,

  821. his proven worth.

  822. How as a son

  823. with a father

  824. he has served

  825. with me in the gospel.

  826. I hope therefore

  827. to send him

  828. just as soon

  829. as I see

  830. how it will go

  831. with me.

  832. The Apostle Paul

  833. in sending Timothy

  834. to Philippi

  835. and sending Timothy

  836. here to Ephesus

  837. and not only

  838. a representative

  839. of the Apostle Paul

  840. but especially

  841. as a representative

  842. of Jesus Christ

  843. in helping

  844. to convey

  845. the doctrines

  846. that will preserve

  847. this church.

  848. But in all

  849. of the foray

  850. and all of the distress

  851. and all of the frustration

  852. that happens

  853. with spiritual leadership

  854. and all the conflict

  855. that Timothy

  856. is about to experience

  857. in following through

  858. with the commands

  859. that Paul

  860. is about to give,

  861. all of the hardship

  862. he's going to face,

  863. the only answer,

  864. the only help

  865. that he will ever give

  866. will be help

  867. that will come from God.

  868. grace,

  869. mercy,

  870. and peace

  871. from God the Father

  872. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  873. Timothy,

  874. look to God

  875. for your help.

  876. Look to God

  877. for your help

  878. and salvation

  879. and encouragement

  880. and strength.

  881. So we need to remember,

  882. we need to remember

  883. that Christ

  884. is the head

  885. of the church.

  886. We need to understand

  887. that he is preeminent

  888. over his church.

  889. In verses 3 to 4

  890. we come to see

  891. the foundation

  892. of the church.

  893. Remember,

  894. the foundation

  895. of the church.

  896. Not only the head

  897. of the church

  898. but the foundation.

  899. And here we're going

  900. to see in verses 3 and 4

  901. that foundation

  902. is the foundation

  903. of truth.

  904. The foundation

  905. of truth.

  906. He says,

  907. as I urged you

  908. when I was going

  909. to Macedonia,

  910. remain at Ephesus

  911. so that you may charge

  912. certain persons

  913. not to teach

  914. any different doctrine.

  915. Any different doctrine.

  916. Now you may

  917. or may not know

  918. that the church

  919. of Ephesus

  920. was established

  921. on the apostle Paul's

  922. third missionary journey.

  923. You might remember

  924. that the apostle Paul

  925. on his second missionary journey

  926. had tried to go

  927. to Asia

  928. but God closed the door.

  929. He tried to go

  930. to Bithynia

  931. but God closed the door.

  932. So he gets this

  933. Macedonian call

  934. in a vision.

  935. He ends up going

  936. to Philippi

  937. and the ministry

  938. will happen there.

  939. On his return trip

  940. to Jerusalem

  941. he stops in

  942. to Ephesus

  943. and would love

  944. to have stayed

  945. but he's unable.

  946. He comes back now

  947. on the third missionary journey

  948. and we find

  949. the effects

  950. of that work.

  951. By the way

  952. it was a port city

  953. in Asia.

  954. Now finally

  955. Paul is in Asia

  956. and here's what happens

  957. in his ministry

  958. in Ephesus.

  959. In Acts chapter 19

    Acts 19:8–10

  960. verses 8 to 10

  961. it says this,

  962. And he entered

  963. the synagogues

  964. and for three months

  965. spoke boldly

  966. reasoning and persuading them

  967. about the kingdom of God.

  968. But when some

  969. became stubborn

  970. and continued

  971. in unbelief

  972. speaking evil

  973. of the way

  974. before the congregation

  975. he withdrew from them

  976. and took the disciples

  977. with him

  978. reasoning daily

  979. in the hall of Tyranus.

  980. This continued

  981. for two years

  982. so that all

  983. the residents of Asia

  984. heard the word

  985. of the Lord

  986. both Jews

  987. and Greeks.

  988. This was a church

  989. that was established

  990. on the truth.

  991. A truth

  992. that the apostle Paul

  993. like no other city

  994. had spent

  995. significant time

  996. investing

  997. in the leaders

  998. and the people

  999. of this church

  1000. so they were

  1001. full up

  1002. with the doctrine

  1003. of God.

  1004. The apostle Paul

  1005. was dealing

  1006. with the leaders

  1007. in Ephesus

  1008. in such a way

  1009. that unlike

  1010. any other church

  1011. that I'm familiar

  1012. with in the book

  1013. of Acts

  1014. in particular

  1015. had access

  1016. to one of the

  1017. preeminent scholars

  1018. of the day

  1019. the apostle Paul.

  1020. And this ministry

  1021. in Ephesus

  1022. flourished

  1023. to such a degree

  1024. that we find

  1025. in Acts chapter 19

    Acts 19:20

  1026. verse 20

  1027. that the word

  1028. of the Lord

  1029. continued to increase

  1030. and prevail

  1031. mightily.

  1032. And so while God

  1033. may have shut

  1034. the door

  1035. to the apostle Paul's

  1036. ministry

  1037. to Asia at large

  1038. here he is

  1039. in this port city

  1040. of Ephesus

  1041. and a result

  1042. of his ministry

  1043. there

  1044. in teaching

  1045. the word of God

  1046. it says

  1047. all of Asia

  1048. heard the word.

  1049. Jews and Gentiles.

1050. God had a better plan.

  1051. God's better plan

  1052. was to send

  1053. the

  1054. to mobilize

  1055. his people

  1056. to make disciples

  1057. in that place.

  1058. God

  1059. allowed

  1060. the apostle Paul

  1061. to help them

  1062. understand

  1063. the

  1064. excuse me

  1065. the significance

  1066. of doctrine

  1067. and so Ephesus

  1068. becomes the center

  1069. of Christian activity.

  1070. Not only

  1071. would Timothy

  1072. remain here

  1073. but will

  1074. church history

  1075. will tell us

  1076. that the apostle John

  1077. also spent

  1078. a great deal

  1079. of time

  1080. in this city.

  1081. But notice

  1082. in verse 3

  1083. what the apostle Paul

  1084. says.

  1085. He says

  1086. charge some

  1087. that they teach

  1088. no other

  1089. doctrine.

  1090. This word

  1091. other doctrine

  1092. is a word

  1093. that the apostle Paul

  1094. kind of invents

  1095. for his purposes.

  1096. He puts two words

  1097. together.

  1098. This word

  1099. other

  1100. and there are two

  1101. Greek words

  1102. for other

  1103. one is

  1104. different

  1105. of a different kind

  1106. and one is

  1107. different

  1108. of the same kind.

  1109. Here

  1110. the word

  1111. is different

  1112. of another kind.

  1113. So it's not even

  1114. close

  1115. to the original.

  1116. It's a gospel

  1117. that is totally

  1118. unrelated.

  1119. It's a gospel

  1120. that is totally

  1121. different

  1122. totally distant.

  1123. The apostle Paul

  1124. will use

  1125. the same

  1126. kind of word

  1127. for other

  1128. when he's speaking

  1129. to the church

  1130. of Galatia

  1131. and helping

  1132. to expose

  1133. the teaching

  1134. that's happening

  1135. there.

  1136. In Galatians

    Galatians 1:6–8

  1137. chapter 1

  1138. verses 6

  1139. to 8

  1140. he says

  1141. I'm astounded

  1142. that you are

  1143. so quickly

  1144. deserting him

  1145. who called you

  1146. in the grace

  1147. of Christ

  1148. and are turning

  1149. to a different

  1150. gospel.

  1151. not that there

  1152. is another one

  1153. but there are

  1154. some who

  1155. would trouble

  1156. you

  1157. and want

  1158. to distort

  1159. the gospel

  1160. of Christ.

  1161. But even

  1162. if we are

  1163. an angel

  1164. from heaven

  1165. should preach

  1166. to you

  1167. a gospel

  1168. contrary

  1169. to the one

  1170. that we

  1171. preach to you

  1172. let him

  1173. be accursed.

  1174. Whatever

  1175. was taking

  1176. place

  1177. in Ephesus

  1178. whatever

  1179. the apostle

  1180. Paul

  1181. is addressing

  1182. is a different

  1183. kind

  1184. of teaching

  1185. that is totally

  1186. unrelated

  1187. to the original

  1188. and because

  1189. it was totally

  1190. unrelated

  1191. it was

  1192. totally

  1193. unnecessary

  1194. and dangerous

  1195. and risky

  1196. for those

  1197. living

  1198. in that

  1199. city

  1200. to hear.

  1201. It was going

  1202. to totally

  1203. dislodge

  1204. their hearts

  1205. the possibility

  1206. of their hearts

  1207. being diverted

  1208. and taken away

  1209. in order for the

  1210. church to remain

  1211. healthy

  1212. it needed to be

  1213. established

  1214. in the truth

  1215. but in order

  1216. for the church

  1217. to be healthy

  1218. it also needed

  1219. to be sustained

  1220. by faithful

  1221. leaders

  1222. sustained

  1223. by faithful

  1224. leaders

  1225. notice

  1226. I urged you

  1227. he says

  1228. there again

  1229. in verse 3

  1230. when I was

  1231. going to Macedonia

  1232. remain at Ephesus

  1233. so that you may

  1234. charge

  1235. certain persons

  1236. not to teach

  1237. any different

  1238. doctrine

  1239. Timothy was

  1240. exhorted

  1241. to exert

  1242. spiritual

  1243. leadership

  1244. these disputes

  1245. over secondary

  1246. matters

  1247. where the Bible

  1248. was not clear

  1249. became the subject

  1250. of conversation

  1251. and argument

  1252. what seemed

  1253. to get the most

  1254. attention

  1255. were these

  1256. myths

  1257. and genealogies

  1258. there seems

  1259. to be this

  1260. competition

  1261. that is happening

  1262. among the various

  1263. leaders in the church

  1264. whoever they were

  1265. they were

  1266. they were focused

  1267. and they concentrated

  1268. their energy

  1269. on things that

  1270. were uncertain

  1271. things that were

  1272. unhelpful

  1273. things that gathered

  1274. a following

  1275. to themselves

  1276. things that

  1277. led to disputes

  1278. things that

  1279. exposed these

  1280. teachers as being

  1281. ignorant and

  1282. unfit for the

  1283. task

  1284. as we work

  1285. our way through

  1286. the letter of

  1287. Timothy

  1288. we'll see

  1289. more of

  1290. the flavor

  1291. of this teaching

  1292. as it addresses

  1293. various areas

  1294. of life

  1295. but Timothy

  1296. notice was not

  1297. to remain

  1298. passive

  1299. Timothy

  1300. was not

  1301. to remain

  1302. on the sidelines

  1303. Timothy

  1304. was not

  1305. to stand

  1306. at a distance

  1307. Timothy

  1308. was to engage

  1309. if he was

  1310. going to help

  1311. this church

  1312. remain as a

  1313. pillar and

  1314. buttress of

  1315. the truth

  1316. he needed

  1317. to remove

  1318. these empty

  1319. talkers

  1320. Timothy

  1321. though young

  1322. was encouraged

  1323. to exercise

  1324. his spiritual

  1325. authority

  1326. to admonish

  1327. these teachers

  1328. to cease

  1329. Paul's instruction

  1330. is clear

  1331. charge

  1332. certain persons

  1333. command

  1334. certain persons

  1335. and this word

  1336. by the way

  1337. is

  1338. aggressive

  1339. it's stern

  1340. to command

  1341. to order

  1342. to direct

  1343. to give

  1344. instruction

  1345. it's a word

  1346. that's used

  1347. both in the

  1348. military

  1349. and in legal

  1350. terms

  1351. so in other

  1352. words the

  1353. apostle Paul

  1354. is telling

  1355. him to

  1356. exercise

  1357. the authority

  1358. as a general

  1359. or as a

  1360. judge

  1361. to be

  1362. strict

  1363. to be

  1364. official

  1365. to be

  1366. authoritative

  1367. to command

  1368. these teachers

  1369. to stop

  1370. this is

  1371. forceful

  1372. this is not

  1373. gentle

  1374. this is direct

  1375. and uncompromising

  1376. and strong

  1377. but this was for

  1378. the sake

  1379. of maintaining

  1380. and establishing

  1381. truth

  1382. because truth

  1383. alone would help

  1384. this church

  1385. to remain

  1386. and to stand

  1387. the test of time

  1388. demonstrates the

  1389. kind of leadership

  1390. and authority

  1391. that Timothy

  1392. was to exercise

  1393. over this

  1394. congregation

  1395. and we turn

  1396. to our next

  1397. purpose statement

  1398. remember

  1399. the purpose

  1400. of the church

  1401. why was Timothy

  1402. supposed to act

  1403. this way

  1404. what was the

  1405. motivation

  1406. for this kind

  1407. of command

  1408. this kind

  1409. of force

  1410. this kind

  1411. of pressure

  1412. we find

  1413. the purpose

  1414. of that command

  1415. in verses 5

  1416. to 7

  1417. notice

  1418. the aim

  1419. of our charge

  1420. is love

  1421. love

  1422. that issues

  1423. from a pure

  1424. heart

  1425. a good conscience

  1426. sincere faith

  1427. certain persons

  1428. by swerving

  1429. from these

  1430. have wandered

  1431. away

  1432. into vain

  1433. discussions

  1434. desiring

  1435. to be teachers

  1436. of the law

  1437. without understanding

  1438. either what

  1439. they are saying

  1440. or the things

  1441. about which

  1442. they make

  1443. confident

  1444. assertions

  1445. this word

  1446. for aim

  1447. is the word

  1448. tell us

  1449. it's the word

  1450. end

  1451. it's the word

  1452. that points

  1453. to result

  1454. or purpose

  1455. the reason

  1456. why I'm

  1457. telling you

  1458. to do this

  1459. Timothy

  1460. is because

  1461. of love

  1462. that is the

  1463. goal

  1464. that is the

  1465. motive

  1466. that is the

  1467. destination

  1468. those are the

  1469. kinds of

  1470. people

  1471. that real

  1472. truth is

  1473. meant to

  1474. create

  1475. to help

  1476. to

  1477. engage

  1478. and nurture

  1479. individuals

  1480. who love

  1481. one another

  1482. individuals

  1483. who first

  1484. have a love

  1485. for God

  1486. and then

  1487. have a love

  1488. for one another

  1489. Paul's

  1490. directive

  1491. seems forceful

  1492. and strong

  1493. but underneath

  1494. the surface

  1495. of this

  1496. command

  1497. is a desire

  1498. for love

  1499. Paul understands

  1500. the significance

  1501. of the spiritual

  1502. drift

  1503. the doctrinal

  1504. drift

  1505. that can happen

  1506. and what

  1507. that will do

  1508. in the hearts

  1509. and minds

  1510. of individuals

  1511. who are led

  1512. astray

  1513. these individuals

  1514. who are wondering

  1515. their faith

  1516. is not sincere

  1517. and this is a

  1518. word

  1519. that is

  1520. contrasted

  1521. with hypocrisy

  1522. it's not the

  1523. kind of

  1524. hypocritical

  1525. faith

  1526. but the

  1527. kind of

  1528. sincere

  1529. faith

  1530. we find

  1531. a little more

  1532. of their

  1533. motivation

  1534. in

  1535. 1st Timothy

  1536. chapter 6

  1537. verse 5

  1538. speaking about

  1539. the same

  1540. group of

  1541. individuals

  1542. talking about

  1543. constant

  1544. friction

  1545. among people

  1546. who are

  1547. depraved

  1548. in mind

  1549. and deprived

  1550. of the

  1551. truth

  1552. imagining

  1553. that godliness

  1554. is a means

  1555. of gain

  1556. under it all

  1557. was a love

  1558. for self

  1559. and especially

  1560. a love

  1561. for comfort

  1562. and money

  1563. and promoting

  1564. their own

  1565. welfare

  1566. they had

  1567. wandered away

  1568. this wandering

  1569. away comes

  1570. from a verb

  1571. that means

  1572. to be wide

  1573. of the mark

  1574. or shoot

  1575. past

  1576. the goal

  1577. any of you

  1578. who've

  1579. understood

  1580. the significance

  1581. of wandering

  1582. maybe

  1583. you've been

  1584. on a trail

  1585. and you

  1586. have gotten

  1587. lost

  1588. on this trail

  1589. how many

  1590. individuals

  1591. even over

  1592. the past

  1593. year

  1594. because of

  1595. wandering

  1596. and

  1597. hiking

  1598. out in

  1599. open spaces

  1600. especially

  1601. in places

  1602. where there's

  1603. no water

  1604. or resources

  1605. the danger

  1606. of those

  1607. kinds of

  1608. things

  1609. going back

  1610. several years

  1611. we had a

  1612. wanderer

  1613. in our

  1614. home

  1615. and one

  1616. of our

  1617. kids

  1618. who go

  1619. nameless

  1620. one of

  1621. our

  1622. children

  1623. at

  1624. age

  1625. one

  1626. and a

  1627. half

  1628. my wife

  1629. and I

  1630. we were

  1631. out

  1632. counseling

  1633. an

  1634. individual

  1635. and

  1636. this

  1637. little

  1638. person

  1639. decided

  1640. that they

  1641. were going

  1642. to explore

  1643. and wander

  1644. on their

  1645. own

  1646. and so

  1647. they

  1648. walked

  1649. out

  1650. of the

  1651. front

  1652. door

  1653. as a

  1654. little

  1655. toddler

  1656. trying

  1657. to

  1658. figure

  1659. out

  1660. and

  1661. find

  1662. where

  1663. to

  1664. go

  1665. and

  1666. they

  1667. wandered

  1668. across

  1669. our

  1670. front

  1671. lawn

  1672. they

  1673. crossed

  1674. the

  1675. street

  1676. they

  1677. wanted

  1678. to

  1679. go

  1680. to

  1681. the

  1682. park

  1683. and

  1684. there

  1685. they

  1686. were

  1687. enjoying

  1688. the

  1689. park

  1690. and

  1691. no

  1692. one

  1693. knew

  1694. where

  1695. they

  1696. were

  1697. the

  1698. wandering

  1699. that

  1700. opens

  1701. us

  1702. up

  1703. to

  1704. danger

  1705. kind

  1706. of

  1707. wandering

  1708. especially

  1709. as a

  1710. year

  1711. and a

  1712. half

  1713. year old

  1714. and

  1715. fortunately

  1716. there

  1717. was

  1718. someone

  1719. who

  1720. saw

  1721. all of

  1722. this

  1723. happen

  1724. saw

  1725. the

  1726. door

  1727. open

  1728. saw

  1729. this

  1730. little

  1731. wanderer

  1732. walk

  1733. out

  1734. and

  1735. toddle

  1736. down

  1737. the

  1738. stairs

  1739. and

  1740. across

  1741. the

  1742. street

  1743. over

  1744. the

  1745. park

  1746. saw

  1747. this

  1748. young

  1749. person

  1750. in our

  1751. home

  1752. brought

  1753. him

  1754. back

  1755. and

  1756. yes

  1757. I blew

  1758. it

  1759. didn't

  1760. I

  1761. you were

  1762. all thinking

  1763. of it

  1764. anyway

  1765. so

  1766. the danger

  1767. of wandering

  1768. and it

  1769. wasn't long

  1770. after

  1771. the same

  1772. little

  1773. wanderer

  1774. decided

  1775. to follow

  1776. after

  1777. his

  1778. mom

  1779. who

  1780. was

  1781. taking

  1782. a

  1783. dog

  1784. for

  1785. the

  1786. walk

  1787. at

  1788. two

  1789. years

  1790. old

  1791. walked

  1792. all the

  1793. way

  1794. down

  1795. the

  1796. street

  1797. about

  1798. a hundred

  1799. yards

  1800. and then

  1801. turned

  1802. the

  1803. corner

  1804. and

  1805. hey

  1806. neighbor

  1807. across

  1808. the street

  1809. is that

  1810. your

  1811. little

  1812. person

  1813. walking

  1814. down

  1815. the

  1816. street

  1817. we

  1818. understand

  1819. the

  1820. significance

  1821. of

  1822. wandering

  1823. and

  1824. if

  1825. anybody

  1826. of us

  1827. understand

  1828. the

  1829. significance

  1830. or the

  1831. danger

  1832. of

  1833. wandering

  1834. then

  1835. this

  1836. element

  1837. of

  1838. love

  1839. is

  1840. what's

  1841. going

  1842. to

  1843. bolster

  1844. our

  1845. heart

  1846. to

  1847. respond

  1848. we

  1849. cannot

  1850. be

  1851. silent

  1852. we

  1853. cannot

  1854. allow

  1855. wanderers

  1856. to have

  1857. their

  1858. way

  1859. we

  1860. cannot

  1861. as

  1862. people

  1863. who

  1864. love

  1865. stand

  1866. at a

  1867. distance

  1868. because

  1869. we're

  1870. concerned

  1871. about

  1872. the

  1873. potential

  1874. conflict

  1875. or the

  1876. potential

  1877. risk

  1878. of

  1879. relationship

  1880. we

  1881. will

  1882. engage

  1883. we'll

  1884. do

  1885. what we

  1886. have to

  1887. do

  1888. to

  1889. draw

  1890. those

  1891. wanderers

  1892. back

  1893. because

  1894. of

  1895. love

  1896. love

  1897. for

  1898. those

  1899. who

  1900. are

  1901. part

  1902. of

  1903. our

  1904. body

  1905. our

  1906. fellowship

  1907. finally

  1908. remember

  1909. the

  1910. people

  1911. of

  1912. the

  1913. church

  1914. remember

  1915. the

  1916. people

  1917. of

  1918. the

  1919. church

  1920. it

  1921. says

  1922. here

  1923. in

  1924. verse

  1925. 8

  1926. now

  1927. we

  1928. know

  1929. that

  1930. the

  1931. law

  1932. is

  1933. good

  1934. if

  1935. one

  1936. uses

  1937. it

  1938. lawfully

  1939. understanding

  1940. this

  1941. the

  1942. law

  1943. is

  1944. not

  1945. laid

  1946. down

  1947. for

  1948. the

  1949. just

  1950. but

  1951. for

  1952. the

  1953. lawless

  1954. and

  1955. disobedient

  1956. for

  1957. the

  1958. ungodly

  1959. and

  1960. sinner

  1961. for

  1962. the

  1963. unholy

  1964. and

  1965. profane

  1966. for

  1967. those

  1968. who

  1969. strike

  1970. their

  1971. fathers

  1972. and

  1973. mothers

  1974. for

  1975. murderers

  1976. the

  1977. sexually

  1978. immoral

  1979. men

  1980. who

  1981. practice

  1982. homosexuality

  1983. enslavers

  1984. liars

  1985. perjurers

  1986. and whatever

  1987. else is

  1988. contrary

  1989. to sound

  1990. doctrine

  1991. in

  1992. accordance

  1993. with the

  1994. gospel

  1995. of the

  1996. glory

  1997. of the

  1998. blessed

  1999. God

  2000. with

  2001. which

  2002. I

  2003. have

  2004. been

  2005. entrusted

  2006. remembered

  2007. the

  2008. people

  2009. of the

  2010. church

  2011. now I

  2012. know

  2013. that

  2014. this is

  2015. about

  2016. the

  2017. law

  2018. and the

  2019. law

  2020. is

  2021. good

  2022. but the

  2023. law

  2024. is good

  2025. because

  2026. it helps

  2027. you and

  2028. I

  2029. consistently

  2030. come to

  2031. terms

  2032. with who

  2033. we are

  2034. every one

  2035. of us

  2036. in this

  2037. room

  2038. are in

  2039. this

  2040. list

  2041. and by

  2042. God's

  2043. grace

  2044. because of

  2045. what we

  2046. find at the

  2047. end

  2048. in

  2049. accordance

  2050. with the

  2051. gospel

  2052. of the

  2053. glory

  2054. of the

  2055. blessed

  2056. God

  2057. with whom

  2058. we've

  2059. been

  2060. entrusted

  2061. it is

  2062. that

  2063. gospel

  2064. that has

  2065. taken us

  2066. from where

  2067. we are

  2068. and has

  2069. now placed

  2070. us into

  2071. Christ

  2072. and has

  2073. given us

  2074. access

  2075. to his

  2076. righteousness

  2077. but every

  2078. one of us

  2079. in this

  2080. room

  2081. fit

  2082. the category

  2083. of sinners

  2084. that the

  2085. apostle Paul

  2086. is talking

  2087. about here

  2088. don't

  2089. forget

  2090. who

  2091. you are

  2092. and as

  2093. we come

  2094. to terms

  2095. with who

  2096. we are

  2097. we come

  2098. to realize

  2099. the wonder

  2100. of the

  2101. grace of

  2102. God for

  2103. us

  2104. we come

  2105. to terms

  2106. with

  2107. understanding

  2108. that if

  2109. this is

  2110. his church

  2111. and he's

  2112. bought us

  2113. with his

  2114. precious

  2115. blood

  2116. then we

  2117. have an

  2118. obligation

  2119. as his

  2120. people

  2121. to please

  2122. him

  2123. and worship

  2124. him

  2125. and to

  2126. seek to

  2127. do that

  2128. which is

  2129. consistent

  2130. with his

  2131. standard

  2132. Jesus

  2133. himself

  2134. says this

  2135. in Luke

    Luke 5:22

  2136. chapter 5

  2137. verse 22

  2138. kind of a

  2139. summary

  2140. of what we

  2141. read

  2142. I have not

  2143. come

  2144. he says

  2145. to call

  2146. the righteous

  2147. but sinners

  2148. to repentance

  2149. there's

  2150. this equalizing

  2151. force

  2152. that happens

  2153. when the law

  2154. is used

  2155. the right way

  2156. the law

  2157. is meant

  2158. to expose

  2159. who we

  2160. really are

  2161. and the law

  2162. is meant

  2163. to point us

  2164. to the reality

  2165. of our need

  2166. that need

  2167. that can only

  2168. be found

  2169. in Jesus

  2170. Christ

  2171. himself

  2172. and so

  2173. even this

  2174. morning

  2175. even now

  2176. the question

  2177. is

  2178. is the law

  2179. for you

  2180. have you

  2181. come to a

  2182. place of

  2183. recognizing

  2184. that you're

  2185. in this list

  2186. that you are

  2187. one of the

  2188. number of the

  2189. unholy and

  2190. profane

  2191. one of the

  2192. number of

  2193. those who

  2194. perhaps have

  2195. even stricken

  2196. your father

  2197. or mother

  2198. one who's been

  2199. sexually immoral

  2200. one who struggles

  2201. and has maybe

  2202. even participated

  2203. in homosexuality

  2204. one who's a liar

  2205. a perjurer

  2206. I love this

  2207. all encompassing

  2208. category

  2209. and anything else

  2210. that is out of

  2211. bounds

  2212. with sound

  2213. doctrine

  2214. have you come

  2215. to the place

  2216. of recognizing

  2217. who you are

  2218. as a sinner

  2219. and have you

  2220. come to

  2221. understand

  2222. that you

  2223. will never

  2224. enjoy

  2225. freedom

  2226. from sin

  2227. without

  2228. the forgiveness

  2229. of God

  2230. have you

  2231. done that

  2232. have you

  2233. have you

  2234. enjoyed

  2235. and experienced

  2236. the benefit

  2237. of the saving

  2238. cleansing

  2239. power

  2240. of God

  2241. has he made

  2242. you one

  2243. with himself

  2244. by forgiving

  2245. your sin

  2246. paying for it

  2247. on the cross

  2248. rising

  2249. again

  2250. and

  2251. and

  2252. and for those

  2253. of us

  2254. who've come

  2255. to terms

  2256. with that

  2257. and have

  2258. recognized

  2259. who we really

  2260. are

  2261. has it created

  2262. in our hearts

  2263. a tenderness

  2264. to those

  2265. who

  2266. who are

  2267. like what we

  2268. were

  2269. rather than

  2270. posturing

  2271. ourselves

  2272. as those

  2273. who are

  2274. looking down

  2275. on all those

  2276. ungodly

  2277. riffraff

  2278. that we've

  2279. come to a place

  2280. of recognizing

  2281. oh they're not

  2282. a whole lot

  2283. unlike what I

  2284. was

  2285. has it created

  2286. in your heart

  2287. a tenderness

  2288. to those

  2289. who also

  2290. need

  2291. Jesus

  2292. and a zeal

  2293. and desire

  2294. to make sure

  2295. that the people

  2296. that God

  2297. has put

  2298. in your way

  2299. whether they're

  2300. neighbors

  2301. or family

  2302. or students

  2303. fellow classmates

  2304. whoever they might be

  2305. is there a burden

  2306. on your heart

  2307. to use the law

  2308. in a way

  2309. to

  2310. to lead them

  2311. to

  2312. the great law

  2313. giver

  2314. and the one

  2315. who alone

  2316. fulfilled the law

  2317. Jesus Christ

  2318. have you placed

  2319. your trust in him

  2320. have you given

  2321. your life to him

  2322. have you asked him

  2323. to be your savior

  2324. to forgive you

  2325. of sin

  2326. and to

  2327. exercise his

  2328. authority

  2329. over your life

  2330. may God help us

  2331. to be those

  2332. who walk in step

  2333. as a healthy church

  2334. in coming to know

  2335. our head

  2336. in coming to understand

  2337. the foundation

  2338. of the church

2339. and that is the truth

  2340. of the word

  2341. that are oriented

  2342. in a way

  2343. that love drives us

  2344. and so as

  2345. disciples of Christ

  2346. what does Jesus say

  2347. to his disciples

  2348. on the night

  2349. before his crucifixion

  2350. they will know

  2351. you're my disciples

  2352. by your

  2353. love

  2354. do the people

  2355. in this world

  2356. know that you

  2357. belong to Christ

  2358. because of

  2359. the love

  2360. they see

  2361. in your life

  2362. and not

  2363. polluted

  2364. kind of love

  2365. not

  2366. not blended

  2367. kind of love

  2368. not worldly love

2369. but the kind of love

  2370. we're talking about

  2371. here

  2372. the uncompromising

  2373. love of God

  2374. that comes

  2375. through the gospel

  2376. that kind of love

  2377. and it's God

  2378. helping us

  2379. as the people

  2380. of the church

  2381. to come to terms

  2382. with our desperate

  2383. need for a savior

  2384. Lord thank you

  2385. for this

  2386. great word

  2387. and for the opportunity

  2388. we have to look

  2389. over the next

  2390. several weeks

  2391. be reminded of

  2392. what a healthy church

  2393. looks like

  2394. Lord we

  2395. as we evaluate

  2396. our own lives

  2397. we know how

  2398. how far we need

  2399. to go

  2400. may that not

  2401. discourage us

  2402. or disappoint us

  2403. but Lord may it

  2404. invigorate us

  2405. to be the kinds

  2406. of people

  2407. you've called us

  2408. to be

  2409. thank you for

  2410. this opportunity

  2411. this morning

  2412. to look into

  2413. the scriptures

  2414. thank you for

  2415. Jesus

  2416. for the example

  2417. that he said

  2418. thank you for

  2419. the spirit

  2420. and your indwelling

  2421. reality

  2422. in our lives

  2423. enabling and

  2424. strengthening us

  2425. thank you

2426. for the word of God

  2427. that gives us

  2428. clear instructions

  2429. and Lord thank you

  2430. for the people

  2431. of God

  2432. that can encourage

  2433. us

  2434. and strengthen us

  2435. and even confront

  2436. us

  2437. when necessary

  2438. God may we be

  2439. faithful

  2440. servants and

  2441. representatives of you

  2442. in Jesus name

  2443. amen

  2444. God bless you

  2445. have a great week

  2446. miracle

  2447. Thank you.
