  1. I want to encourage you to open your Bibles, please, to 1 Timothy chapter 2.

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  2. ! 1 Timothy chapter 2.

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  3. And just one glimpse of your notes will say that we have a lot to cover this morning.

  4. And the reason why they're so extensive today is especially because I want to make sure

  5. that as we're moving through the material, the topics that we're going to address today

  6. are so immense.

  7. Really, we should be taking several weeks to address these, but because of the time constraints

  8. that we have and trying to make sure that we're done with this series by the time we get to

  9. Christmas.

  10. Chapter 2, being the shortest one, was the one we had to do in one shot.

  11. So praying that this will be helpful and instructive for you as we move through this together.

  12. If you're using the Pew Bible, I would encourage you to turn to page 991.

  13. That's where you can find us.

  14. It's no mystery that our world is changing.

  15. It's no surprise that the decline, the moral decline of this culture is at catastrophic,

  16. what you might consider alarming and catastrophic levels.

  17. Just this past week, I read an article, an article that was dated May 9th, 2023, a PBS News article

  18. that was entitled, Transgender Minors Protected from Estranged Parents Under Washington Law.

  19. It describes this law, it was signed by the governor of the state of Washington, and it seeks to help

  20. protect those who seek gender-affirming care.

  21. It describes the law in this way, quote,

  22. It's part of a wave of legislation this year in Democratic-led states intended to give refuge

  23. amid a conservative movement in which lawmakers in other states have attacked transgender rights

  24. and limited or banned gender-affirming care for minors.

  25. This new law seeks to reverse the requirement that parents would be notified 72 hours in advance

  26. of the special care given to their minor and instead says, quote,

  27. Under the new law, facilities can instead contact the State Department of Children.

  28. It goes on to describe that more than a half a dozen states from New Jersey to Vermont to Colorado

  29. have passed or in process of passing such laws.

  30. Quote,

  31. Protections in blue states are being baked into law as Republican-led states take steps to bar access

  32. to gender-affirming care for transgender minors,

  33. which for people under 18 typically involves puberty blockers or other hormone treatments, end quote.

  34. It's clear that there is an agenda that is being put in place by those who are in leadership,

  35. regardless of what side you're on.

  36. One may wonder how we've moved so far from the foundational truths that we have come to appreciate

  37. and understand that go all the way back to creation.

  38. How have we lost our way?

  39. How has our perspective and our world departed so far from those truths

  40. that have been the bedrock of humanity from the very beginning?

  41. The answer in a phrase is because the church has not been a pillar and buttress for the truth.

  42. The church, more importantly, those who call themselves Christians followers of Jesus

  43. because of His redeeming work in their life of death and resurrection,

  44. the blood of Christ in paying for their sins and forgiving them from those sins

  45. and redeeming them to Himself,

  46. that the church has not remained strong or fixed in the unwavering truths of the Scripture.

  47. We have capitulated.

  48. We have accommodated.

  49. We have given way.

  50. And so the drift in culture, which is really not a drift,

  51. but is a strategic plan from the enemy from the very beginning

  52. to dismantle the creative work and the image of God written over every human heart

  53. to twist and to pervert and to corrupt that image.

  54. But God's people have been given an unwavering call,

  55. a call to represent the gospel,

  56. a call to defend the truth,

  57. to be this pillar and buttress of the truth,

  58. to help engage culture

  59. and not to create, as we might say,

  60. and many of you might be familiar,

  61. a moral majority.

  62. It is not about morality.

  63. It is about the gospel.

  64. The goal is salvation of souls.

  65. The goal is the glory of God,

  66. a worshiping community,

  67. a renewed world.

  68. And women,

  69. in our passage today,

  70. today,

  71. you stand as those who provide the greatest picture,

  72. the greatest example of those who have submitted themselves

  73. in understanding not only what the truth of the word of God says

  74. about the beautiful design that he has created

  75. in biblical manhood and womanhood,

  76. but helping to engage the world with this great gospel picture

  77. so that we can help our world understand the beauty of the gospel.

  78. As you can see in your notes,

  79. and what I'll show on the screen,

  80. is kind of the correlation between the first and second half

  81. of this chapter, chapter 2.

  82. You can see some of the similar terms and phrases and results.

  83. Now, this is not meant to demonstrate or try to prove in any way

  84. the parallel structure of these two parts of chapter 2,

  85. but essentially draw attention to the similarity.

  86. I think Paul's point here is that if we were ever to change our culture,

  87. it must begin with the church.

  88. If the world is ever to be changed by the truth of God's word,

  89. that truth must remain preserved,

  90. must remain active,

  91. must remain visible within the body of the church,

  92. its members,

  93. its people,

  94. its followers of Jesus.

  95. So I'd like to bundle this chapter together

  96. in two different ways.

  97. I want us to understand the ultimate objective.

  98. You can see there even at the bottom,

  99. it ends,

  100. each one ends with this goal of salvation,

  101. this goal of gospel testimony,

  102. this overreaching priority of God to save souls.

  103. So we're going to bundle this chapter in two parts.

  104. The first part is the command of God

  105. as it relates to living in the world.

  106. And the second is the command of God

  107. as living in the church.

  108. First, let's turn our attention to the command of God,

  109. the command to gospel living in the world.

  110. Verse one, notice.

  111. First of all, then I urge that supplications,

  112. prayers,

  113. intercessions,

  114. and thanksgiving

  115. be made for all people,

  116. for kings and all who are in high positions,

  117. that we may lead a peaceful and gentle

  118. and quiet life,

  119. godly and dignified in every way.

  120. This is good and is pleasing

  121. in the sight of God our Savior,

  122. who desires all people to be saved

  123. and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

  124. For there is one God,

  125. there is one mediator between God and man,

  126. the man Christ Jesus,

  127. who gave himself as a ransom for all,

  128. which is the testimony given at the proper time.

  129. For this, I was appointed a preacher

  130. and an apostle.

  131. I am telling the truth.

  132. I am not lying.

  133. A teacher of the Gentiles

  134. in faith and truth.

  135. And you can see here at the very end,

  136. the purpose statement,

  137. the purpose of all of this first section

  138. is the glory of God

  139. that's shining through the gospel.

  140. In the first seven verses,

  141. we see two priorities

  142. that the apostle Paul will put forward.

  143. First, we're going to see his priority of prayer.

  144. And second, we're going to see

  145. the priority of the gospel.

  146. And I say them right at the outset

  147. because with so much material in between,

  148. I don't want you to lose track

  149. of the two priorities we have

  150. here in the first part of this section.

  151. Every one of us has the obligation to pray

  152. because every single one of us

  153. have been given the commission.

  154. Every one of us who belong to Christ

  155. have been given the commission

  156. to make disciples in all nations.

  157. Paul will begin with this plea.

  158. He says, I urge.

  159. And it's important just to pause here for a moment

  160. because we're going to find several statements

  161. throughout this text

  162. that draw attention to the apostle Paul

  163. and his command for Timothy

  164. and his command for this church.

  165. It's important to understand

  166. right at the outset

  167. because much of the argument,

  168. much of the pushback of this chapter

  169. is that, well, this is the apostle Paul's opinion

  170. or this is the word of the apostle Paul

  171. for a specific place

  172. or this is the word of the apostle Paul

  173. for this own cultural church of Ephesus.

  174. It is removed in terms of the fact

  175. that it's just temporary in nature.

  176. But it's important for us to understand

  177. that the apostle Paul

  178. has been given a command.

  179. We saw that command

  180. at the very beginning of this letter.

  181. 1 Timothy 1, verse 1.

    1 Timothy 1:1

  182. You see it there on the page.

  183. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus,

  184. by command of God

  185. and our Savior

  186. and of Christ Jesus, our hope.

  187. The apostle Paul is under direct orders

  188. from God himself.

  189. And so the apostle Paul

  190. in giving commands to Timothy

  191. is exercising the authority of God

  192. to commission Timothy for ministry.

  193. And then we found last week

  194. in verse 18

  195. that the command or charge

  196. that had been given to the apostle Paul

  197. is now entrusted to Timothy

  198. to do the same in this church.

  199. Verse 18.

  200. This charge I entrust to you, Timothy.

  201. And that entrustment was not only given to Timothy,

  202. but that entrustment was also given,

  203. or Timothy was supposed to then

  204. pass on that baton

  205. as it were to every subsequent spiritual leader

  206. from the generation of Timothy

  207. all the way to the present day.

  208. 2 Timothy 2, verses 1-2.

    2 Timothy 2:1–2

  209. You then, my child,

  210. speaking to Timothy,

  211. be strengthened by the grace

  212. that is in Christ Jesus,

  213. and what you have heard from me

  214. in the presence of many witnesses

  215. entrust to faithful men

  216. who will be able to teach others also.

  217. This direct command of God

  218. to the apostle Paul

  219. entrusted to Timothy

  220. and then dispensed to every subsequent leader

  221. of God's church through the ages.

  222. Paul begins with,

  223. first of all, I urge.

  224. Meaning, of first priority.

  225. Or before everything, pray.

  226. While you live in the world,

  227. while you engage culture,

  228. while you understand your purpose in this life,

  229. you need to understand

  230. that you are under divine authority.

  231. That God has given you authority

  232. through prayer

  233. to exercise spiritual strength

  234. in opposing culture.

  235. So we demonstrate our faith in God

  236. when we respond to our authorities

  237. in the right way.

  238. When we submit to the authorities

  239. that God has placed over us,

  240. as we understand,

  241. especially through our study through Daniel,

  242. we recognize that God raises up leaders

  243. and God brings leaders down.

  244. As we come to a place of recognizing

  245. that God is ultimately over

  246. all the authorities in this life,

  247. we demonstrate our faith in God

  248. by our appropriate response

  249. to the authorities that He's placed over us.

  250. And the resources that God has given to us

  251. are mighty.

  252. He says so in 2 Corinthians chapter 10.

    2 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  253. They're mighty through power.

  254. So stop using carnal weapons,

  255. he says.

  256. Use weapons of divine power.

  257. Once our leaders are in place,

  258. we do that through prayer.

  259. Here the Apostle Paul uses several words

  260. to describe and reinforce

  261. the kind of prayer he's encouraging.

  262. Several words.

  263. Supplication, prayers, intercession.

  264. And these three words indicate

  265. not only the insufficiency of the requester,

  266. but the devotion of the seeker

  267. and finally,

  268. the childlike confidence

  269. of the petitioner.

  270. We come to a place of recognizing

  271. our dependence.

  272. We come to a place of knowing

  273. that God alone can help.

  274. And we come to Him in desperation

  275. and expectancy,

  276. asking Him to intervene.

  277. The main point of all of this

  278. is to emphasize the significance

  279. of prayer in all forms.

  280. As Peter will say later

  281. in 1 Peter chapter 4 verse 7.

    1 Peter 4:7

  282. He says,

  283. The end of all things is at hand.

  284. Therefore be self-controlled

  285. and sober-minded

  286. for the sake of your prayers.

  287. We understand that prayer is important.

  288. We understand that God has called us,

  289. directed us to pray.

  290. So for whom should we pray?

  291. Well, we're making these prayers.

  292. We're bringing these prayers

  293. that says,

  294. First for all people.

  295. In other words,

  296. don't be exclusive in your prayers.

  297. Don't only pray for the people

  298. in your church,

  299. although that's important.

  300. Don't only pray for the people

  301. in your family.

  302. That's important.

  303. Don't only pray for the people

  304. that you are interested in,

  305. who do nice things to you.

  306. Pray for everyone.

  307. Pray for the people

  308. in your workplace.

  309. Students,

  310. pray for the people

  311. in your classes,

  312. in your schools.

  313. Pray for your teachers.

  314. Pray for your athletic coaches.

  315. For the rest of us,

  316. pray for missionaries

  317. by name,

  318. specifically.

  319. Pray for those

  320. you randomly come across

  321. in the marketplace.

  322. Pray for everyone,

  323. but especially pray

  324. for your leaders.

  325. It says,

  326. So that we may enjoy

  327. a peaceful

  328. and quiet life.

  329. Why?

  330. Well,

  331. because God's design

  332. for leaders

  333. is for them to act

  334. as agents

  335. to enforce

  336. lawful living.

  337. God's design

  338. for leaders.

  339. So,

  340. I want to take

  341. a mini detour here,

  342. and the reason

  343. I'm doing this

  344. is because

  345. in order to inform

  346. our prayers,

  347. we need to come

  348. to understand

  349. who our leaders are

  350. and what our responsibility

  351. to our leaders

  352. should be

  353. and what their responsibility

  354. under God

  355. as his servants

  356. should also be.

  357. So,

  358. how do we pray

  359. for our leaders?

  360. Well,

  361. we can pray

  362. for our leaders

  363. as we understand

  364. their design.

  365. I want to walk

  366. through these

  367. very quickly.

  368. First,

  369. and they're all

  370. in there in your notes,

  371. I'm just going

  372. to walk through them.

  373. Leaders are appointed

  374. by God

  375. as his servants.

  376. They're appointed

  377. by God

  378. as his servants.

  379. That's important.

  380. Romans 13,

  381. 1 to 4

  382. says,

  383. Let every person

  384. be subject

  385. to the governing authorities,

  386. for there is no

  387. authority

  388. except from God.

  389. And those that exist

  390. have been

  391. instituted

  392. by God.

  393. Therefore,

  394. whoever resists,

  395. authorities resist

  396. what God has appointed.

  397. And those who resist

  398. will incur judgment.

  399. For he is God's servant

  400. for your good.

  401. But if you do wrong,

  402. be afraid,

  403. for he does not bear

  404. the sword in vain,

  405. for he is the servant

  406. of God,

  407. an avenger

  408. who carries out

  409. God's wrath

  410. on the wrongdoer.

  411. Could it be any clearer?

  412. However,

  413. the authorities

  414. that God has placed

  415. over us,

  416. whether you like them

  417. or not,

  418. whether you feel

  419. like they're

  420. representing God

  421. faithfully or not,

  422. they are God's servants.

  423. We have a responsibility

  424. to submit.

  425. Next,

  426. leaders are appointed

  427. to punish

  428. the evildoer,

  429. and next,

  430. leaders are appointed

  431. to praise the good.

  432. I draw that

  433. not only from

  434. Romans chapter 13,

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  435. but I also draw that

  436. from 1 Peter chapter 2,

    1 Peter 2:13

  437. verses 13 and 14,

  438. which makes that clear.

  439. Be subject

  440. for the Lord's sake

  441. to every human institution,

  442. whether it be

  443. to the emperor

  444. as supreme

  445. or to governors

  446. as sent by him

  447. to punish those

  448. who do evil

  449. and to praise

  450. those who do good.

  451. That is their responsibility.

  452. That's what they

  453. as servants of God

  454. are intended to do,

  455. to reward

  456. the good

  457. and punish

  458. the evil.

  459. Number four,

  460. good leaders

  461. point to the creator

  462. rather than the creature.

  463. Now,

  464. I'm deriving

  465. these next several points

  466. from Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  467. because built into

  468. the creation account,

  469. built into the design

  470. of God,

  471. it says that

  472. even through

  473. the things

  474. that God has made,

  475. his divine attributes

  476. are clearly seen.

  477. So going all the way

  478. back to the beginning,

  479. what's been inherent

  480. in the design

  481. that God has created

  482. are certain

  483. fundamental truths

  484. and values of God.

  485. And so when we

  486. push against those things,

  487. we are demonstrating

  488. that we are resisting

  489. God fundamentally.

  490. So our leaders

  491. as servants of God

  492. recognizing the things

  493. that God even built

  494. into creation

  495. should come to terms

  496. with this

  497. and seek to advocate

  498. these things.

  499. For example,

  500. good leaders

  501. point to the creator

  502. rather than the creature.

  503. Romans 1, 24, 25

  504. shows what happens

  505. when they don't.

  506. Therefore,

  507. God gave them up

  508. in the lusts

  509. of their hearts

  510. to impurity,

  511. to the dishonoring

  512. of their bodies

  513. among themselves,

  514. because they exchanged

  515. the truth about God

  516. for a lie.

  517. And they worshiped

  518. and served

  519. the creature

  520. rather than the creator

  521. who is blessed forever.

  522. Certainly,

  523. we have a stewardship

  524. over the world.

  525. God has given us

  526. as male and female

  527. the responsibility

  528. to exercise dominion

  529. over the earth.

  530. But as soon

  531. as these agendas

  532. that various leaders

  533. will have

  534. begin to point

  535. and push

  536. to the creation

  537. rather than drawing

  538. attention to the creator,

  539. then watch out.

  540. Next,

  541. good leaders

  542. will reinforce

  543. God's design

  544. for marriage.

  545. And when they don't,

  546. this happens

  547. in verses 26 and 27.

  548. It says,

  549. for this reason,

  550. God gave them up

  551. to dishonorable passions.

  552. For their women

  553. exchanged natural relations

  554. for those that are

  555. contrary to nature.

  556. And the men likewise

  557. gave up natural relations

  558. with women

  559. who were consumed

  560. with passions

  561. for one another.

  562. Men committing

  563. shameless acts

  564. with men

  565. and receiving

  566. in themselves

  567. the due penalty

  568. for their error.

  569. At the very beginning

  570. of creation

  571. in Genesis 1

  572. and Genesis chapter 2,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  573. God had built

  574. the beautiful arrangement

  575. of masculinity

  576. and femininity

  577. in the scripture

  578. and had given

  579. a command to Adam,

  580. a man shall leave

  581. his father

  582. and mother

  583. and cling to his wife

  584. and the two

  585. shall be one flesh.

  586. One male,

  587. one female

  588. in harmony together

  589. to carry out

  590. the creation order

  591. and that is

  592. to be fruitful

  593. and multiply

  594. and fill the earth.

  595. The inherent

  596. truths of scripture.

  597. And when our leaders

  598. push against

  599. what should be

  600. natural and true

  601. from the beginning,

  602. we need to pray for them.

  603. Finally,

  604. good leaders

  605. will uphold

  606. God's inherent

  607. code of conduct.

  608. Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1:28–32

  609. verses 28 to 32,

  610. and since they did not

  611. see fit to acknowledge God,

  612. God gave them up

  613. to a debased mind

  614. to do what ought

  615. not to be done.

  616. They were filled

  617. with all manner

  618. of unrighteousness,

  619. evil, covetous,

  620. malice.

  621. They are full of envy,

  622. murder, strife,

  623. deceit,

  624. maliciousness.

  625. They are gossips.

  626. Though they know

  627. God's righteous decree

  628. that those who practice

  629. such things

  630. deserve to die,

  631. they not only do them

  632. but give approval

  633. to those

  634. who practice them.

  635. A government

  636. that commends these

  637. or that confronts

  638. or goes against

  639. these fundamental principles

  640. demonstrate

  641. they're fighting

  642. against God.

  643. The foundation

  644. of God's design

  645. is under attack.

  646. The core elements

  647. of the gospel

  648. living are being

  649. stripped away.

  650. Those very things

  651. that are meant

  652. to point to a creator

  653. and help us

  654. understand our place.

  655. Those are the things

  656. that are being obscured.

  657. Those are the things

  658. that are being dismantled.

  659. And so,

  660. the responsibility

  661. that we have

  662. is not to protest,

  663. not to take it

  664. to the public square,

  665. but to pray.

  666. That is the instruction

  667. that is given

  668. to us

  669. in this passage.

  670. As Christians,

  671. we have a responsibility

  672. to pray.

  673. Now,

  674. picking up

  675. in verse 2,

  676. God's purpose

  677. for our prayers.

  678. What will our prayers

  679. accomplish?

  680. Notice,

  681. that way,

  682. excuse me,

  683. that we may lead

  684. a peaceful

  685. and quiet life,

  686. godly

  687. and dignified

  688. in every way.

  689. This is good

  690. and is pleasing

  691. in the sight of God,

  692. our Savior,

  693. who desires

  694. all people

  695. to be saved

  696. and to come

  697. to a knowledge

  698. of the truth.

  699. There is a two-fold purpose

  700. that we see here.

  701. The first

  702. is a purpose

  703. that's related

  704. to people,

  705. to lead

  706. to a quiet life,

  707. a godly life,

  708. a dignified life,

  709. that there might be

  710. peacefulness,

  711. there might be

  712. quietness,

  713. there might be

  714. rest and tranquility,

  715. that there might be

  716. opportunity

  717. for the obstacles

  718. to be removed.

  719. And the second purpose,

  720. which is the ultimate purpose,

  721. is that God

  722. would be glorified.

  723. It says,

  724. it is good

  725. and pleasing

  726. in the sight of God

  727. who desires salvation

  728. and has called us

  729. to evangelize.

  730. Here we see

  731. the heart of God.

  732. This phrase,

  733. this word,

  734. in order that

  735. we may lead,

  736. points to the purpose

  737. of our prayers.

  738. This peaceful life,

  739. tranquil life,

  740. quiet life.

  741. What an important word

  742. for us today.

  743. In an age

  744. where we want to take,

  745. we want to make

  746. a public statement,

  747. where we want

  748. to be noticeable,

  749. where we want

  750. to be go big

  751. or go home,

  752. where we want

  753. to draw attention

  754. to ourselves.

  755. God calls us

  756. to a quiet life,

  757. a dignified life.

  758. Not a life

  759. that is pressing

  760. on all the hot buttons.

  761. Not a life

  762. that is necessarily

  763. advocating

  764. in all the forums

  765. or addressing

  766. all of the injustices,

  767. but a quiet,

  768. tranquil life

  769. that is opposed

  770. to a vocal,

  771. loud,

  772. expressive,

  773. social,

  774. kind of warrior,

  775. kind of person.

  776. rather than fighting

  777. with carnal weapons,

  778. we're fighting

  779. with divine weapons,

  780. a prayer.

  781. Take your requests

  782. to God.

  783. Let Him work

  784. through the circumstances.

  785. Let Him advocate

  786. for the oppressed.

  787. Let Him humble

  788. the proud.

  789. Let Him advance

  790. His cause.

  791. And as we commit

  792. ourselves to pray,

  793. we are demonstrating

  794. a confidence

  795. in God

  796. who is over all.

  797. Boy,

  798. as we walk

  799. through the life

  800. of Daniel,

  801. we should be so humbled

  802. to recognize

  803. the posture

  804. of faithfulness

  805. that led

  806. to consistent,

  807. daily,

  808. faithful prayer.

  809. It was the prayers

  810. of Daniel

  811. that changed

  812. the heart

  813. of Nebuchadnezzar.

  814. Might we be those

  815. who seek

  816. to advance

  817. the cause

  818. of God

  819. who says,

  820. remember in His model prayer,

  821. your kingdom come,

  822. your will be done.

  823. Might that be

  824. the expression

  825. of our hearts?

  826. The agenda

  827. which God

  828. seeks

  829. to address

  830. is sins

  831. forgiven,

  832. lives changed,

  833. hearts

  834. that are cleansed,

  835. minds

  836. that are informed,

  837. Christ

  838. that is exalted,

  839. God who is glorified,

  840. that is God's

  841. objective.

  842. May our heart

  843. and life

  844. and actions

  845. express

  846. the heart

  847. of God.

  848. We don't have time

  849. to work through

  850. the intricacies

  851. of this phrase

  852. all people

  853. but we do know

  854. one thing

  855. that the all people

  856. that is expressed here

  857. that God desires

  858. to save all people

  859. that all people

  860. is the same word,

  861. the same word pairing

  862. that is used

  863. earlier in the text

  864. where we're to pray

  865. for all people.

  866. God does have

  867. a heart

  868. for the lost

  869. for God

  870. so loved

  871. the world

  872. that he gave

  873. his only begotten son

  874. that whoever

  875. believes in him

  876. should not perish

  877. but have

  878. everlasting life.

  879. God cares

  880. for lostness.

  881. We should care

  882. for lostness

  883. as well.

  884. So I have there

  885. in your notes

  886. the encouragement

  887. to pray for leaders

  888. and I have

  889. several things

  890. that you can

  891. and should

  892. be praying for

  893. that are related

  894. to the objectives

  895. that God has given

  896. to them.

  897. And so I want you

  898. to want to pause

  899. right now

  900. in our service

  901. and I want to just

  902. do exactly

  903. what we're encouraged

  904. to do

  905. and that is to pray

  906. for our leaders.

  907. So I've asked Mark

  908. to come

  909. and pray

  910. for our leaders.

  911. Thank you Mark.

  912. Just keep going.

  913. Okay.

  914. God we are

  915. you are such a good

  916. and great God

  917. and you are worthy

  918. of all praise.

  919. We just thank you

  920. for all the things

  921. you've done for us

  922. that you have not

  923. left us here alone

  924. but you've given us

  925. truth,

  926. the words of truth

  927. and God that is

  928. such a comfort

  929. and protection

  930. for us

  931. in these troubling times

  932. and we know God

  933. that you only have

  934. good things in store

  935. for us.

  936. I do think of

  937. Proverbs 21

  938. where it says

  939. the king's heart

  940. is in the hand

  941. of the Lord

  942. and he directs

  943. it like a waterway

  944. wherever he pleases.

  945. So God you are

  946. engaged

  947. with our

  948. leaders

  949. and

  950. it pleases you

  951. to have your

  952. sovereign control

  953. and so God

  954. we ask for

  955. courage

  956. to be engaged.

  957. Amen.

  958. As Pastor said

  959. first and foremost

  960. to pray

  961. for our leaders.

  962. God we must

  963. just really

  964. bathe them

  965. in prayer

  966. and let them

  967. know

  968. that they have

  969. a role to play

  970. in even the

  971. spiritual tenor

  972. of a country

  973. and pray God

  974. that we will be

  975. bold

  976. and humble

  977. and that our

  978. words as we

  979. talk with

  980. people in our

  981. community

  982. and work

  983. and neighborhood

  984. that we will

  985. just be

  986. able to give

  987. light

  988. kindness

  989. and compassion.

  990. God forgive us

  991. for not being

  992. a brighter light

  993. around our

  994. world

  995. and society.

  996. We just ask God

  997. that you will

  998. help us to use

  999. these

  1000. next

  1001. few months

  1002. that we have

  1003. here

  1004. to just really

  1005. be engaged

  1006. and again

  1007. be prayerful

  1008. for our leaders

  1009. and all that

  1010. we do

  1011. that will

  1012. glorify you.

1013. We ask this in your

  1014. son's name.

  1015. Amen.

  1016. Amen.

  1017. So our first

  1018. priority is a

  1019. priority of prayer.

  1020. Our second

  1021. priority is a

  1022. priority of the

  1023. gospel.

  1024. We find that in

  1025. verses 5 to 7.

  1026. The priority of

  1027. the gospel.

  1028. For there is,

  1029. he says,

  1030. one God

  1031. and one mediator

  1032. between God

  1033. and man,

  1034. the man Christ

  1035. Jesus,

  1036. who gave himself

  1037. as a ransom

  1038. for all,

  1039. which is the

  1040. testimony given

  1041. at the proper

  1042. time.

  1043. For this I was

  1044. appointed a preacher

  1045. and an apostle.

  1046. I am telling

  1047. the truth.

  1048. I am not lying.

  1049. A teacher

  1050. of the Gentiles

  1051. in faith

  1052. and truth.

  1053. Remember several

  1054. weeks ago

  1055. or a couple

  1056. weeks ago

  1057. when we began

  1058. this series

  1059. and I described

  1060. to you

  1061. what evangelicalism

  1062. and where it's

  1063. trending

  1064. as it relates

  1065. to the core

  1066. tenets,

  1067. not only of who

  1068. God is,

  1069. but what we

  1070. would consider

  1071. the core

  1072. tenets of the

  1073. gospel.

  1074. This is a

  1075. snapshot of how

  1076. far we have

  1077. gone as it

  1078. relates to

  1079. truth and

  1080. being the

  1081. pillar and

  1082. buttress of

  1083. the truth.

  1084. When those

  1085. who are

  1086. meant to be

  1087. the catalyst

  1088. and the

  1089. carriers for

  1090. truth don't

  1091. understand who

  1092. God is,

  1093. then we can

  1094. imagine that

  1095. those who

  1096. come to

  1097. embrace that

  1098. gospel that

  1099. they preach

  1100. will also be

  1101. unaware of

  1102. the essential

  1103. truths that

  1104. they need for

  1105. salvation.

  1106. We may see

  1107. these statistics,

  1108. but the

  1109. apostle Paul

  1110. will put the

  1111. truth of the

  1112. gospel in

  1113. very simple

  1114. terms.

  1115. He points to

  1116. these unwavering

  1117. statements.

  1118. One God,

  1119. one mediator,

  1120. one ransom.

  1121. That's the

  1122. gospel in its

  1123. barest form.

  1124. That God being

  1125. united in three

  1126. persons,

  1127. Father,

  1128. Son,

  1129. and Holy Spirit,

  1130. not a vague

  1131. God,

  1132. not an ambiguous

  1133. God,

  1134. not any God,

  1135. but the God

  1136. of the Bible,

  1137. the God who

  1138. represents himself

  1139. as Trinity in

  1140. three persons,

  1141. Father,

  1142. Son,

  1143. and Holy Spirit.

  1144. Jesus will say

  1145. on several

  1146. occasions,

  1147. if you don't

  1148. have me,

  1149. you don't have

  1150. the Father.

  1151. One mediator,

  1152. of course,

  1153. that is Jesus

  1154. himself,

  1155. who died for

  1156. our sins,

  1157. who rose again,

  1158. who paid for

  1159. our sins on

  1160. the cross,

  1161. and makes a

  1162. way through

  1163. faith in him,

  1164. and forgiveness

  1165. for sin as

  1166. the ransom to

  1167. take that sin

  1168. and that payment

  1169. price that has

  1170. been paid on

  1171. our behalf to

  1172. give us the

  1173. gift of salvation

  1174. for any who

  1175. will believe.

  1176. The goal of

  1177. our prayers and

  1178. the goal of our

  1179. living is this

  1180. priority of the

  1181. gospel.

  1182. Now,

  1183. Paul will shift

  1184. his attention.

  1185. Now,

  1186. instead of

  1187. speaking in

  1188. generalities and

  1189. addressing the

  1190. group at large,

  1191. now he'll begin

  1192. to help the

  1193. church that he's

  1194. addressing,

  1195. both full of

  1196. men and women,

  1197. to recognize

  1198. their specific

  1199. role in this

  1200. gospel strategy.

  1201. That's where we

  1202. turn our attention

  1203. to the command

  1204. to gospel living

  1205. in the church.

  1206. The command to

  1207. gospel living in

  1208. the church,

  1209. beginning in

  1210. verse 8,

  1211. it says this,

  1212. I desire then

  1213. that in every

  1214. place the men

  1215. should pray,

  1216. lifting holy

  1217. hands without

  1218. anger or

  1219. quarreling,

  1220. likewise also

  1221. that women

  1222. should adorn

  1223. themselves in

  1224. respectable apparel,

  1225. with modesty and

  1226. self-control,

  1227. not with braided

  1228. hair in gold or

  1229. pearls or costly

  1230. attire, but with

  1231. what is proper for

  1232. women who possess

  1233. godliness with good

  1234. works.

  1235. Let a woman learn

  1236. quietly with all

  1237. submissiveness and

  1238. not permit a woman

  1239. to teach or to

  1240. exercise authority

  1241. over a man.

  1242. Rather, she is to

  1243. remain quiet.

  1244. For Adam was

  1245. formed first,

  1246. then Eve, and

  1247. Adam was not

  1248. deceived, but the

  1249. woman was deceived

  1250. and became a

  1251. transgressor.

  1252. Yet she will be

  1253. saved through

  1254. childbearing if

  1255. they continue in

  1256. faith and love

  1257. and holiness with

  1258. self-control.

  1259. Now the number of

  1260. volumes that have

  1261. been written and

  1262. the amount of

  1263. ink that has been

  1264. spilled on this

  1265. subject and

  1266. particularly, this

  1267. chapter is immense.

  1268. And in preparation

  1269. for this, I have

  1270. really tried to be

  1271. faithful with this

  1272. text and tried to

  1273. be faithful with

  1274. this subject so

  1275. that I'm not

  1276. overstating.

  1277. I've listened to

  1278. over 30 hours of

  1279. what you might call

  1280. a theological

  1281. discourse going

  1282. all the way back

  1283. to Genesis and

  1284. recounting or

  1285. looking at all of

  1286. the distinctive

  1287. places in which

  1288. men and women

  1289. served throughout

  1290. the scriptures.

  1291. I've also read

  1292. pages and pages

  1293. and pages of

  1294. commentary.

  1295. I read a book

  1296. and we're making

  1297. that available to

  1298. you.

  1299. It's in the

  1300. resource center and

  1301. it's for purchase.

  1302. You can purchase it

  1303. for 13 bucks.

  1304. You can see the

  1305. details of that on

  1306. the back of your

  1307. form.

  1308. It's by Kevin De

  1309. Young.

  1310. It's called Men

  1311. and Women.

  1312. It provides a

  1313. thorough but simple

  1314. discourse that's

  1315. easy to understand.

  1316. There's also a

  1317. resource, a free

  1318. resource you can

  1319. download by scanning

  1320. that QR code.

  1321. The 50

  1322. questions, crucial

  1323. questions about

  1324. manhood and

  1325. womanhood by

  1326. Piper and

  1327. Grudem.

  1328. I would commend

  1329. that to you.

  1330. But in looking

  1331. through and

  1332. studying the

  1333. cultural background,

  1334. the specific

  1335. traditions and

  1336. nuances of this

  1337. city in

  1338. Ephesus and the

  1339. worship of

  1340. Aphrodite or

  1341. Diana, depending

  1342. upon which

  1343. posture you

  1344. have, the

  1345. temple prostitutes

  1346. that were there

  1347. and the words

  1348. that were used

  1349. is head mean

  1350. authority or

  1351. does head mean

  1352. source and all

  1353. of the words that

  1354. are built in to

  1355. this text, I can

  1356. tell you with all

  1357. of that, what we

  1358. have here in our

  1359. passage is

  1360. trustworthy.

  1361. You don't have to

  1362. worry about reading

  1363. all of that

  1364. stuff.

  1365. What God has

  1366. given to us in

  1367. this translation not

  1368. only says what it

  1369. needs to say but

  1370. it then bears out

  1371. the fruit of what

  1372. we come to

  1373. understand it

  1374. means.

  1375. So we walk

  1376. through this piece

  1377. by piece in the

  1378. little time that we

  1379. have left.

  1380. First we need to

  1381. understand that men

  1382. are to serve through

  1383. prayer.

  1384. Men are to serve

  1385. through prayer.

  1386. This is so

  1387. important for men

  1388. because I'm going

  1389. to stereotype here.

  1390. My guess is that

  1391. it's built into us

  1392. as men to defend.

  1393. It's built into us

  1394. as men to confront.

  1395. It's built into us

1396. as men to do what

  1397. it takes to help

  1398. push against culture

  1399. and defend our values

1400. and want to do what's

  1401. necessary to have

  1402. our way.

  1403. But the apostle Paul

  1404. says no.

  1405. Pray.

  1406. That is your main

  1407. line of defense.

  1408. Pray.

  1409. It is a posture

  1410. not of force

  1411. but a posture

  1412. of humility.

  1413. A posture

  1414. of dependence.

  1415. And so in that

  1416. respect it's not a

  1417. whole lot different

  1418. than the posture

  1419. we're going to find

  1420. later on for women.

  1421. The posture is the

  1422. same.

  1423. It's just the realm

  1424. may be a little

  1425. different.

  1426. Submit yourselves

  1427. to the authorities

  1428. that God has placed

  1429. over you and pray.

  1430. Pray.

  1431. He says pray in

  1432. every place.

  1433. Well what is this

  1434. every place?

  1435. Well one commentator

  1436. puts it this way.

  1437. He says the everywhere

  1438. in which the men

  1439. pray is wherever

  1440. believers are

  1441. gathered together

  1442. in Ephesus.

  1443. Probably this is a

  1444. reference to a local

  1445. house church.

  1446. And they're to pray

  1447. in such a way

  1448. that they're lifting

  1449. up holy hands.

  1450. What is this all

  1451. about?

  1452. Well we see

  1453. particularly that

  1454. the characteristic

  1455. that has been true

  1456. of this church

  1457. even from the very

  1458. beginning of this

  1459. chapter is there's

  1460. anger.

  1461. There is quarreling.

  1462. There is disruption.

  1463. There is conflict

  1464. that is happening.

  1465. We're going to see

  1466. that throughout the

  1467. letter of 1st Timothy

  1468. and then even spilling

  1469. into 2nd Timothy.

  1470. But the apostle Paul

  1471. is calling for the

  1472. leaders and for the

  1473. men of this church

  1474. instead of being

  1475. characterized by anger

  1476. and quarreling to

1477. have a heart that is

  1478. coupled with the

  1479. spirit and demonstrates

1480. the work of God in

  1481. them to put those

  1482. things away.

  1483. Paul will say in

  1484. the next chapter one

  1485. of the key

  1486. qualifications for

  1487. spiritual leaders in

  1488. 1st Timothy 3

  1489. chapter 3 2.

  1490. Not quarrelsome.

  1491. And Paul has

  1492. already instructed the

  1493. church of Ephesus in

  1494. this way.

  1495. We find in Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:1–3

  1496. chapter 4 verses 1 to

  1497. 3.

  1498. I therefore prison of

1499. the Lord urge you to

1500. walk in a manner worthy

1501. of the calling to which

  1502. you've been called with

  1503. all humility and

  1504. gentleness with patience

  1505. bearing with one another

  1506. in love eager to

  1507. maintain the unity of

1508. the spirit in the bond

  1509. of peace.

1510. If that heart is not

  1511. reflected in the leader

1512. then the spirit is not

1513. at work in a life.

1514. And if the spirit is not

1515. at work in a life then

  1516. the prayers that they're

  1517. praying aren't effective.

  1518. Because remember in

  1519. Romans chapter 8 it's the

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1520. Holy Spirit that

  1521. intercedes for the saints

  1522. with groanings that are

  1523. too deep for words.

1524. And so if the spirit is

1525. not present in a life to

  1526. help direct them towards

  1527. proper and effective

  1528. unity.

1529. If that is not a place

1530. for them or an interest

1531. in their heart then it's

1532. likely the spirit is not

  1533. present.

  1534. In Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4:29

  1535. verses 29 and 31 it says

  1536. let no corrupting talk

1537. come out of your mouths

1538. but only such as good for

1539. building up as fits the

1540. occasion that it may give

1541. grace to those who hear

1542. and do not grieve the

1543. Holy Spirit of God by whom

1544. you were sealed for the day

  1545. of redemption.

1546. Let all bitterness and wrath

1547. and anger and clamor and

1548. slander be put away from

  1549. you with all malice.

1550. When anger and wrath and

1551. clamor are present in a

  1552. person's life it's evidence

  1553. that he's grieving the

1554. spirit and thus does not

1555. enjoy the power of God in

  1556. his life.

1557. You cannot enjoy a prayer

1558. life that is full of power

1559. without the work of the

  1560. spirit.

  1561. This church would never

  1562. have been a pillar in a

1563. buttress of the truth if it

  1564. allowed quarreling to

  1565. continue.

1566. God will not hear our

1567. prayers if we are people

  1568. who are grieving the

  1569. spirit.

1570. Now we turn to women.

1571. He turns to women in

  1572. verses 9 to 15 and we

1573. find several ways in which

1574. women are to model good

  1575. works.

1576. How women are to model good

  1577. works.

1578. women are to model good

  1579. works.

1580. We find likewise also that

  1581. women should adorn

  1582. themselves in respectable

  1583. apparel with modesty and

  1584. self-control not with braided

1585. hair and gold or pearls or

1586. costly attire but with what is

1587. proper for women who possess

1588. godliness and with good works.

1589. Women you have a key

  1590. responsibility and I might say a

1591. key opportunity to model for the

1592. rest of us what it means to be a

1593. person who loves God who trusts

1594. him and is punctuating your life

1595. with good works and when we see that

1596. both men and women we can we can

  1597. glorify God.

1598. We can praise him for his work in

1599. your life of demonstrating God's work

1600. through you and your confidence in the

1601. good design that God has given.

1602. So first how do they model good

  1603. works?

1604. Well they model good works first by

1605. having a beauty that points to God.

1606. A beauty that points to God.

1607. This likewise is an important

  1608. connector word.

1609. It connects it with the

1610. responsibilities that are given to

1611. men in verse 8 and they have they

1612. have a significant responsibility as

1613. well and this responsibility that we

1614. find here is this responsibility

1615. to demonstrate beauty that points to

  1616. God.

1617. Women God has made you to be

1618. beautiful and being beautiful is an

  1619. important characteristic.

1620. We see that all the way through the

1621. the Old Testament we see how the

1622. women of old were standout knockouts

1623. of their time but the beauty that

1624. God has called every woman to

1625. possess is the kind of beauty that

1626. doesn't draw attention to self but

1627. draws attention to her Savior.

1628. The kind of beauty that reflects the

  1629. beauty of Christ.

1630. The kind of beauty that that

1631. demonstrates a love for God.

1632. The kind of beauty that that shows

1633. that God is working in her heart and

1634. life to change her as we saw in 2nd

  1635. Corinthians chapter 3 verse 18 that

1636. she's being transformed from one degree

1637. of glory to the other.

1638. There is this beauty that is that is

1639. building and growing in her as she

1640. commits herself to love God.

1641. In Timothy's time braided hair and

1642. costly pearls were ways to flaunt their

  1643. wealth to flaunt themselves.

1644. And the Apostle Paul wants this church

1645. instead of drawing attention to their

1646. selves and their designer shoes and

  1647. their fashionable clothing.

1648. He wants them to draw attention to God.

1649. As Peter will say in 1st Peter chapter

  1650. 3 verse 3 to 4.

1651. Do not let your adorning be external.

1652. The braiding of hair, the putting on of

1653. gold, jewelry, and clothing you wear.

1654. But let your adorning be the hidden

  1655. person of the heart.

1656. With the imperishable beauty of a gentle

1657. and quiet spirit which in God's sight

  1658. is very precious.

1659. Your beauty is something to behold.

1660. Let your beauty point to God.

1661. Second, they're to model good works by

1662. having a posture that is ready to learn.

  1663. Verse 11.

1664. A posture that is ready to learn.

1665. Let a woman learn quietly with all

  1666. submissiveness.

1667. Now, our problem with this verse is we

1668. don't look at the privilege of learning

1669. and the joy of being doctrinally sound.

1670. Our eyes run to those negative words

1671. at the very end of this sentence.

  1672. Quietly in all submissiveness.

1673. This word for quiet is a word that's been

1674. used even in this chapter.

  1675. It's not a word for silence but it's a

  1676. word for tranquility.

1677. There is this humble strength about a

1678. woman in allowing her life to be

1679. governed by the word of God.

1680. There is this reflection of doctrinal

  1681. devotion.

1682. She is in many ways a woman who is

1683. pursuing a life with God through

  1684. careful and faithful study.

  1685. She's a woman who has demonstrated a

1686. mastery of the scriptures and as we find

1687. with Aquila and Priscilla that Priscilla

1688. was useful in helping to inform

1689. Apollos there in the book of Acts and

1690. in helping to him to navigate his own

1691. journey of doctrine because Aquila and

1692. Priscilla were so faithful and secure in

  1693. their understanding of doctrine.

  1694. So women pursue doctrine.

  1695. Pursue truth.

1696. Be those who have a posture of learning.

1697. Third, they express good works by having a

1698. heart that is secure in God's design.

1699. A heart that is secure in God's design.

1700. We see this here in verse 12.

1701. I do not permit a woman to teach or to

1702. exercise authority over a man.

1703. Rather she is to remain quiet.

1704. For Adam was formed first and Eve and

1705. Adam was not deceived but the woman was

1706. deceived and became a transgressor.

1707. This word for quiet again is the word for

  1708. tranquility.

1709. And to teach or to exercise authority were

1710. those things that we're going to find in

1711. the next chapter were inherent for those who

1712. were spiritual leaders of the church.

1713. They were the elders and pastors and

1714. teachers who God reserved to be men for

1715. the sake of helping to reflect not just the

1716. fact that he was differentiating between

1717. maleness and femaleness but especially that he

1718. was pointing back to the original design.

1719. And it was through that original design that

1720. the glory of God in the gospel will be tangible

  1721. and salient for people.

1722. We need to understand that Christ himself

1723. reinforced the counter-cultural instruction to

1724. women in the first century.

1725. In Luke chapter 8 we find that women traveled with

    Luke 8 chapter mention

1726. Christ on his various ministry journeys.

1727. In Luke chapter 9 we find that it was Mary who sat

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1728. at Jesus' feet.

1729. Women were promoted as examples of piety throughout

  1730. the gospels.

1731. It was Anna who walked, waited night and day in the

1732. temple there in Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

1733. It was the Syriophoenician woman who Jesus commends

1734. for her faith that stands out in that day.

1735. It was women who would come and stand before the

  1736. cross.

1737. It was women who would go, be the first to go to the

  1738. tomb.

1739. It was women who first saw the resurrected Savior and

1740. took that word back to the apostles.

1741. Now the scripture is not trying to suppress and put down

1742. women but trying to lift them up and encourage them to

1743. understand the place that they have in reflecting God's

  1744. design and order.

1745. And as they choose to have a heart that is secure in God's

1746. design, they will reflect God's good gospel.

1747. Finally, they will model good works by having a home of

  1748. gospel impact.

1749. Having a home of gospel impact.

1750. Verse 15, yet she will be saved through childbearing if they

1751. continue in faith and love and holiness with self-control.

1752. We end this chapter where Paul ended the section there in verse

  1753. 7.

1754. And helping us to understand the purpose of our prayer and now

1755. the purpose of our gospel living within the church.

1756. And that is to prioritize the gospel.

1757. And the gospel impact that women will have in their families is

  1758. significant.

1759. It's a gospel impact to not only change the culture in the church,

1760. but subsequently then to change the culture in the world as God is

1761. working through your ministry to your kids.

1762. And God is using your faithfulness in your children to engage the world.

1763. It's important to close with some things that this passage does not say.

1764. And I have some of those on the reverse part of your notes.

1765. I just want to move through them quickly and then I'll close this out.

1766. First, this does not limit the spiritual gifts that a woman can have.

1767. Women may be given the gift of leadership, teaching, discernment,

  1768. administration, etc.

1769. That just because you are not able to teach or exercise authority in a public

1770. way, in a mixed audience, that God is still gifted women.

1771. And we've all been encouraged by them with gifts of teaching,

1772. gifts of leadership, gifts of administration.

1773. Next, it does not mean that a woman cannot participate in the corporate worship.

  1774. She may.

  1775. She must.

  1776. She's encouraged to sing.

  1777. She's encouraged to pray.

1778. She's encouraged to stir up love and good deeds.

1779. She's encouraged to admonish the idle,

  1780. encourage the faint-hearted,

1781. to help the weak, to be patient with all.

1782. And tonight as we're gathered together,

1783. we're going to hear from some ladies who will share their testimony

1784. of how God changed their life.

1785. Those kinds of testimonies and public proclamations

  1786. are not only encouraged,

1787. but are commanded in the scripture.

1788. Next, it does not mean that a woman cannot teach.

1789. Rather, older women are to teach younger women.

1790. And as you are teaching your children at home,

1791. teaching the kids here in our church

1792. is a vital part of ministry.

1793. Finally, it does not mean that a woman cannot lead through service.

1794. And there I have listed in Romans chapter 16, verses 3 to 16.

    Romans 16:3–16

1795. This is a final close of greetings

1796. where the apostle Paul points out several women

1797. who were instrumental in his ministry.

  1798. He calls them co-workers and co-laborers,

1799. those who were partnered with him

1800. in this vital work of gospel ministry.

1801. Women, your role is so significant.

1802. Men, our role is so significant.

1803. And as we submit ourselves to the biblical framework for manhood and womanhood,

1804. we will not only help to change the culture of the church,

1805. but help to engage the world

1806. so that we can be a pillar and buttress of the truth.

1807. May the truth shine through our lives

1808. in the way we embrace the God-ordained roles that he has set for us.

1809. Oh God, we praise you for this word.

1810. Lord, we understand that it's countercultural.

1811. We pray that you would help us to be faithful,

1812. not only to know what your word says,

1813. but faithful to demonstrate and obey

1814. the commands that you have given to us from your scripture.

1815. And as a result of that, Lord, I pray

1816. that not only would our families change

1817. and our church reflect the wonder of who you are,

1818. but the gospel light would shine from us

  1819. out into this world.

1820. I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

1821. God bless you. Have a great week.
