  1. Well, I want to encourage you to open up your Bibles, if you would please, to 1 Timothy chapter 3.

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  2. We're continuing our study from last week and picking it up halfway through there at verse 8.

  3. ! Last week covering the first seven verses about elders and now trying to begin to work on the subject of deacons beginning in verse 8.

  4. If you're using the Pew Bible, I would encourage you to turn there with us. It's on page 992.

  5. It would be beneficial for you to be able to follow along with us in your Bibles.

  6. Have you ever heard someone use the phrase, that's not my job? Anybody heard that phrase before?

  7. I wish I could say I never used that phrase. And I wish I could say I've never heard that phrase.

  8. But even in the home, you know how this works in a home setting.

  9. Hey, will you please pick up the dishes from the table?

  10. Well, that's not my job!

  11. Or, hey, would you be willing to help collect the trash and put it in the bin outside, please?

  12. Well, come on! That's just not my job!

  13. Maybe you've heard that phrase before.

  14. Maybe you've used that phrase before.

  15. Maybe even here in the church setting, you're encouraged to be a part of the ministry that's here.

  16. And, of course, there's lots of opportunities in children's ministry.

  17. And like, hey, I don't have the gift of children.

  18. I don't have the gift of those little rugrats.

  19. Now, you may have one or two or three or four running around your house,

  20. but for some reason, you don't have the gift of it here.

  21. I get it.

  22. Or maybe you don't have the spiritual gift of mowing a lawn, sitting on a tractor.

  23. You do it every week when you're mowing your lawn at home.

  24. But we find different reasons not to be able to fulfill service opportunities here at church.

  25. And I get it, because there's lots to do.

  26. There's work to be done.

  27. But as we're going to see in the passage today, that God has called every single one of you

  28. who is a follower of Jesus Christ, every single one of us that calls ourselves a disciple,

  29. those who have bowed the knee before Christ in faith, asked forgiveness of our sins,

  30. you are now a follower of Him.

  31. You are a servant.

  32. And the word for servant in the New Testament is the word deacon.

  33. We're going to press into that a little bit more as we go.

  34. Here are some examples that I found on the Internet of people not doing their job.

  35. So this sign, illegally parked cars will be fine.

  36. I love that one.

  37. How many people did that have to get through in order for it to get hung up?

  38. You know, the person who is writing the letters, the person who is editing the sign,

  39. the person who is actually hanging it up and reading to themselves,

  40. oh, I like this sign.

  41. I can actually park here.

  42. I'll be fine.

  43. Or how about this?

  44. A person who is trying to connect pipes and realizes a rock is in the way.

  45. I don't know why that rock was so hard to move,

  46. but they're going to route the pipe around the rock.

  47. Or this next one.

  48. If you can't see, that's a possum that's on the road.

  49. And the people who are painting lines decided,

  50. we don't move possums, we just paint lines.

  51. So there you have it, a possum with some lines.

  52. And then on the side of the road, there's some moss that is growing,

  53. line that's going right through.

  54. Final picture here.

  55. This is a sidewalk, and if you can't tell,

  56. you know, a bike lane and walking lane,

  57. but for some reason, you're not going to get too far on this sidewalk.

  58. The tree is right in the way.

  59. And then finally, if you can't read this sign,

  60. it says this is a surgical lounge,

  61. and after hours, they are encouraged.

  62. The visitors who are sitting in the lobby waiting for their turn are encouraged,

  63. will you please answer the phone for us?

  64. We need some help around here.

  65. And it's easy to say, hey, time out, not my job.

  66. The truth is that God has given us a job to do.

  67. And it's not only a good job, a good work.

  68. It is a way for us to point to the one to whom we follow.

  69. It's a way for us as God's people to demonstrate that the work of Christ is happening in our life,

  70. that the preeminent servant that we're going to just look at and remember throughout this entire passage today,

  71. that the preeminent servant, Jesus Christ, has and should have done a work in our life

  72. to make us servants, to make us deacons, as it were.

  73. So if you're with me there, in 1 Timothy chapter 3,

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  74. there's a phrase that I put on your outline.

  75. I want it to kind of guide our thinking today as we work through this passage.

  76. And it's there on your outline.

  77. It says this,

  78. Elders serve by leading, and deacons lead by serving.

  79. Elders serve by leading, and deacons lead by serving.

  80. And we're going to fill this out and kind of develop this thought for us as we work our way through this passage.

  81. So if you're there with me in 1 Timothy chapter 3,

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  82. let me read the passage for us, and we'll dig in.

  83. It says in verse 8,

  84. Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine,

  85. not greedy for dishonest gain.

  86. They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience,

  87. and let them also be tested first.

  88. Then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.

  89. Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers,

  90. but sober-minded, faithful in all things.

  91. Let deacons each be the husband of one wife,

  92. managing their children and their own households well.

  93. For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves

  94. and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

  95. So similar to last week, I want to take this into sections.

  96. First, I want us to see the ministry of servant leaders.

  97. What is it that they do?

  98. How do they benefit the church?

  99. What is the role that they play?

  100. And so as we dig into this,

  101. I want us to recognize this first word likewise

  102. demonstrates to us that there are some similarities,

  103. but also some differences that they play.

  104. A deacon's role is both similar but different.

  105. This may seem really obvious, but it's important for us to note.

  106. To explore this word likewise

  107. and to recognize that there are some similarities here.

  108. And the fact that elders and deacons stand side by side in this passage

  109. will help us to recognize that there is something that they do,

  110. some distinction that they have in the church

  111. that allows it to play out in a healthy way.

  112. So, Paul introduces elders there in verse 1.

  113. I'm going to just draw your attention to verse 1 for a moment.

  114. It says,

  115. So, the likewise that is here draws attention to several similarities.

  116. I want to just draw your attention to them briefly.

  117. First is they have a distinct function.

  118. They have a distinct function.

  119. The fact that elders qualifications and deacon qualifications are here

  120. means that deacons, like elders, have a specific role to fill.

  121. Second, they provide some leadership in some way.

  122. Like elders, deacons provide a measure of leadership and service for the body.

  123. Third, they are selected on the basis of their character.

  124. Meaning, you're not just looking for competencies.

  125. You're not just looking for somebody who can mow a straight line.

  126. You're looking for somebody who has a character quality about him.

  127. He's leading a team of individuals.

  128. And you want to make sure that there is this spiritual maturity,

  129. this quality about his character that has been tested

  130. and it's demonstrated through his life.

  131. But unlike elders, there are some differences.

  132. First, they are not encouraged to aspire to the work.

  133. It's fascinating to me how simple and abrupt the very beginning of verse 8 is.

  134. Having provided an introduction for elders in verse 1,

  135. to begin this section on deacons with just one word, likewise,

  136. before spilling into the characteristics,

  137. draws some attention and I just want to draw this out as an observation for us

  138. that whatever a deacon is supposed to do,

  139. he doesn't necessarily aspire to this role of deaconing.

  140. Second, Paul does not mention a specific office like he does with elders.

  141. Aspire to the office of overseer, we see in verse 1.

  142. No such correlation is made here for us in this verse, verse 8.

  143. Now, while they have a title and they have a role to play,

  144. Paul does not designate necessarily in this spot an office.

  145. And I think that's important for us to notice.

  146. Third, while it's clear that deacons serve in some ways,

  147. Paul does not indicate a specific work for them to do,

  148. like he does with elders in verse 1.

  149. He desires a noble task.

  150. That is, the Greek words kalos ergon,

  151. which is the two words good work.

  152. Now, Paul could have talked about a work,

  153. which he does in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  154. Ephesians 4, 11 and 12, he talks about a work.

  155. Notice with me.

  156. And he gave the apostles, speaking of Christ,

  157. the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,

  158. to equip the saints for the work, that's ergon,

  159. of ministry, that is, diakonia,

  160. to building up the body of Christ.

  161. There is a ministry work, a deaconing, serving work to do,

  162. but guess what?

  163. Guess who is supposed to fill out the deaconing work

  164. in a service-related way?

  165. Every believer.

  166. And elders are in place, pastors are in place,

  167. to help equip the saints to do and carry out the function of serving,

  168. which is really just kind of the basic word for service throughout the New Testament,

  169. that we're all called to a measure of service,

  170. and pastors, elders, overseers are intended,

  171. they're put in place to help you serve better,

  172. to help you do what God has called you to do.

  173. It's clear that deacons are important for the welfare of the church.

  174. Otherwise, they wouldn't be listed here side by side with an elder.

  175. So let's develop this some more.

  176. Let's kind of understand a little bit more about what a deacon is supposed to do.

  177. And now I'm speaking more specifically about kind of this function of leadership,

  178. this service kind of leader, this deacon.

  179. We're going to look at their function in the early church from Acts chapter 6.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  180. If you've spent any time reading through the book of Acts,

  181. you understand how the church has developed.

  182. It's developed significantly from Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  183. There at the day of Pentecost,

  184. where Peter is preaching his first sermon in front of the masses,

  185. we find in Acts chapter 2, verse 41,

    Acts 2:41

  186. this incredible response.

  187. It says,

  188. So that those who received the word were baptized,

  189. and there were added that day about 3,000 souls.

  190. Now, this church of 120 believers exploded overnight,

  191. and then exploded to this church of 3,000 at least individuals.

  192. And then as the church begins to interact with one another,

  193. they're growing in a spiritual way.

  194. We find in verse 47 of chapter 2 that the Lord was adding to their number each day

  195. those who were being saved.

  196. This multiplication, this gospel work, these open hearts,

  197. the ministry of the Spirit and convicting hearts and drawing them to faith,

  198. this multiplying work that's happening.

  199. Well, in Acts chapter 3, Peter and John will go to the temple.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  200. They go there to pray, and there at the temple, they meet a lame man,

  201. and they heal this lame man.

  202. They walk into the temple.

  203. People recognize him and see the work of God in healing him,

  204. and they all are celebrating,

  205. and Peter capitalizes on the opportunity and preaches another message.

  206. And then in Acts chapter 4, we find that 5,000 more are added to the number.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  207. So now we're at least at 8,000 plus.

  208. So that when the church is now in the process of laying down their possessions,

  209. selling their possessions, sharing with one another,

  210. we find from Acts chapter 5, verse 14,

    Acts 5:14

  211. that more than ever, believers were added to the Lord,

  212. multitudes of both men and women.

  213. The church is exploding in a very good way.

  214. Numbers of people are being added.

  215. And then we turn our attention to Acts chapter 6.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  216. We find this in verse 1.

  217. It says,

  218. Now, in the days when the disciples were increasing in number,

  219. a complaint among the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews

  220. because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.

  221. And that's the diakonia.

  222. That's the ministry of service that we find throughout the New Testament.

  223. So now we've come to a crisis moment.

  224. Now we've come to a point of decision.

  225. There's ministry to do, but there aren't enough people to go around.

  226. And a decision has to be made.

  227. What are the apostles going to do in terms of fulfilling the call to ministry that they've been given?

  228. Well, so they devise a plan.

  229. The plan shows up in verse 2.

  230. It says,

  231. And that's our verbal form of deacon, this diakoneo.

  232. And so they recognized that the ministry that was in front of them was a significant work.

  233. But the ministry that they've been called to was also a significant work.

  234. It wasn't that the apostles had to make a decision between the more important ministry and the less important ministry

  235. and to prioritize that, but to say,

  236. No, both ministries need to happen in this crisis moment of the church.

  237. And so we need to distribute the load of ministry to other qualified men to help lead in this effort

  238. so all the ministry within the church can happen.

  239. Which, by the way, is really shocking to me that here we are,

  240. a church of 15,000, 20,000 or more,

  241. and now finally the apostles are recognizing,

  242. This is too big a load for us to handle.

  243. We need to draw in some other people to help us with this.

  244. And so that's what they do.

  245. This word to serve that we find in verse 2 is the verbal form of deacon.

  246. So the apostles are not going to oversee this ministry anymore.

  247. They're going to entrust this delegated ministry to a group of faithful men.

  248. That's what we find in verse 3.

  249. Therefore, it says,

  250. Brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute,

  251. full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom,

  252. whom we will appoint to this duty.

  253. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry,

  254. that's important, diakonia of the word.

  255. There is a ministry to do.

  256. There is a ministry of the word.

  257. There is a ministry to these Hellenistic widows.

  258. Both ministries are vital for the health and progress of the church.

  259. And so raising up leaders to help fulfill that ministry was essential

  260. to ensure that God's work was being done.

  261. These two ministries taking place here, both important,

  262. both by qualified men to fulfill.

  263. But I want to draw your attention to this phrase here at the beginning of verse 3,

  264. Pick out from among you.

  265. And I think that's significant for us.

  266. It means that these men have already shown a heart to serve.

  267. It means that these men are already doing the work.

  268. It means that these men have already demonstrated their proven character,

  269. their dependability, their leadership, their spiritual maturity.

  270. They are vested.

  271. They are trusted.

  272. They are engaged.

  273. They are active.

  274. They are dependable.

  275. In a very real way,

  276. they've already established themselves as servant kind of leaders.

  277. The title of deacon wasn't going to change anything about the way

  278. that they engaged the people, these Hellenistic widows.

  279. It was only going to activate the work that they were already doing

  280. and help to enhance it in some way

  281. so that the widows knew who to look to for this kind of help and leadership.

  282. It was to ensure that that work was going to continue.

  283. It was going to be done.

  284. It wasn't that the title of deacon was going to change anything about that work,

  285. but just recognize the work that was already taking place.

  286. All this process was meant to identify these servant leaders

  287. who were already engaged.

  288. And notice the primary purpose of their ministry.

  289. There in the verse 4,

  290. we will devote ourselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word.

  291. It was a compatibility between elders and deacons

  292. to allow the ministry of teaching and praying to continue.

  293. That focus that the apostles had to continue to be enhanced.

  294. So overseeing this ministry,

  295. the apostles was to free them up, as it were,

  296. to preach and to pray.

  297. We find this throughout the New Testament,

  298. these kinds of examples of faithful men

  299. who were willing to fill this kind of responsibility

  300. and serving in this kind of way.

  301. But it does beg the question,

  302. then who is a deacon?

  303. And the scripture is clear about this too.

  304. So the goal for every believer

  305. is serving the body.

  306. Who is a deacon?

  307. And I want to confuse the subject,

  308. but I want to just suggest

  309. that everybody who is a follower of Jesus

  310. is a servant,

  311. and thus, in a very technical sense,

  312. is a deacon in that God has called them

  313. to servant kind of leadership.

  314. Of course, we find this preeminently

  315. in our Savior Jesus.

  316. You remember when the disciples,

  317. they're on this road,

  318. and they're arguing about who is first

  319. and who is the greatest,

  320. and Jesus turns his attention to them,

  321. and he confronts them,

  322. and he says,

  323. he sits down,

  324. he calls the disciples

  325. in Mark 9, verse 35,

    Mark 9:35

  326. if anyone would be first,

  327. he must be last of all

  328. and servant diakonos of all.

  329. God calls his people to be servants.

  330. And by the way,

  331. service is the building block of Christianity.

  332. Service is at the foundation

  333. and at the heart of spiritual maturity.

  334. It's what God has called every one of us to do

  335. because it is preeminently

  336. a picture of Christ,

  337. as we find in Mark 10, 45,

  338. where Jesus says of himself,

  339. for even the Son of Man

  340. came not to be served

  341. diakono,

  342. but to serve diakono

  343. and to give his life a ransom for many.

  344. You want to be like Christ?

  345. You want to pattern your life

  346. so that it looks like Jesus?

  347. Wear the robe of service.

  348. Choose to be,

  349. for lack of a better word,

  350. a deacon.

  351. Choose to serve

  352. in a deacon kind of way.

  353. Expend yourself like Jesus.

  354. Serve to the end

  355. like Jesus.

  356. Grow in service

  357. like Jesus.

  358. That's what we're all called to.

  359. We see examples

  360. throughout the New Testament.

  361. We don't have time

  362. for this this morning,

  363. but Timothy

  364. is referred to

  365. in 2 Timothy 4, 5,

  366. he's referred to

  367. as a deacon.

  368. His ministry

  369. is deacon-like.

  370. Stephanas

  371. and his family

  372. was referred to

  373. in 1 Corinthians chapter 16.

    1 Corinthians 16 chapter mention

  374. It was a deaconing

  375. kind of ministry.

  376. The apostle Paul

  377. actually referred to himself

  378. in 1 Timothy 1, 12

  379. as he's filling out

  380. his own credentials.

  381. He speaks of himself.

  382. His service

  383. was the deaconing

  384. kind of service

  385. because foundationally

  386. every single believer

  387. is a servant.

  388. Deacon.

  389. You are a deacon

  390. in that

  391. you are called

  392. to serve

  393. the body.

  394. You are called

  395. to look

  396. like Jesus,

  397. to serve

  398. in that way.

  399. We find this

  400. in the church.

  401. We saw this verse already,

  402. but I want to

  403. bring it back up.

  404. Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4:11

  405. verses 11 and 12.

  406. He gave

  407. the apostles,

  408. the prophets,

  409. the evangelists,

  410. the shepherds,

  411. and teachers

  412. why?

  413. Well,

  414. to equip the saints

  415. for the work

  416. of ministry,

  417. diakonia,

  418. for the building

  419. up the body of Christ.

  420. So,

  421. we as pastors,

  422. elders,

  423. overseers,

  424. are preeminently

  425. called

  426. to equip you

  427. to serve

  428. like a deacon.

  429. We're called

  430. to help build out

  431. in your life

  432. a heart

  433. and affection

  434. for serving others.

  435. In 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 9:12

  436. chapter 9,

  437. verse 12,

  438. Paul,

  439. in speaking about

  440. the gift

  441. that was given

  442. by the church

  443. of Corinth

  444. to the church

  445. in Jerusalem,

  446. says this,

  447. for this ministry,

  448. diakonia,

  449. of this service,

  450. leturgia,

  451. which is another

  452. word for service,

  453. is not only

  454. supplying the needs

  455. of the saints,

  456. but also is overflowing

  457. in many thanksgivings

  458. to God.

  459. This expression

  460. of ministry

  461. and service

  462. and pouring out

  463. and spending self

  464. for the sake

  465. of serving the body.

  466. in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 4:10

  467. chapter 4,

  468. verses 10 and 11,

  469. we find this,

  470. as each has received

  471. a gift,

  472. and how many

  473. of us

  474. have received

  475. a gift?

  476. Every one

  477. of you

  478. in this room

  479. who has

  480. the Holy Spirit,

  481. who has asked

  482. forgiveness for sin,

  483. has confessed

  484. your faith

  485. in God,

  486. you have the Spirit,

  487. so you have

  488. a spiritual gift.

  489. So,

  490. this applies

  491. to everybody

  492. in this room

  493. who has

  494. the Holy Spirit,

  495. okay?

  496. So,

  497. as you have

  498. received a gift,

  499. use it to serve

  500. diakanao,

  501. one another,

  502. as a good steward

  503. of God's

  504. varied grace.

  505. Whoever speaks

  506. is one who speaks

  507. the oracles of God.

  508. Whoever serves

  509. diakanao

  510. as one who serves

  511. by the strength

  512. that God supplies.

  513. And here's

  514. the glorious

  515. privilege

  516. of our service.

  517. It's this,

  518. in order that,

  519. in everything,

  520. God may be

  521. glorified

  522. through Jesus Christ.

  523. To Him

  524. belong glory

  525. and dominion

  526. forever and ever.

  527. Amen.

  528. When we put

  529. the spiritual gifts

  530. that God

  531. has given to us,

  532. when we put them

  533. to work,

  534. we glorify God.

  535. Which,

  536. I think we can

  537. make the correlation

  538. without being

  539. in jeopardy

  540. or danger

  541. that if we choose

  542. to shelf

  543. our gift,

  544. if we choose

  545. to push it

  546. to the side,

  547. if we choose

  548. to just let it

  549. languish,

  550. then at least

  551. as it relates

  552. to service

  553. and being a good

  554. steward,

  555. we are not

  556. bringing glory

  557. to God.

  558. What a privilege,

  559. what a responsibility.

  560. We are servants.

  561. The joy

  562. of that entrustment,

  563. the joy

  564. of that stewardship

  565. to put to work,

  566. the gift

  567. to serve

  568. as a deacon

  569. as it were.

  570. The church,

  571. serving the church

  572. but especially

  573. and preeminently

  574. serving Christ.

  575. Maybe you're listening

  576. and you're like,

  577. okay,

  578. thank you Andrew,

  579. I get all that

  580. but I still don't know

  581. who this deacon is

  582. here in

  583. 1 Timothy chapter 3

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  584. and I don't know

  585. what this deacon

  586. is supposed to do.

  587. So let's try

  588. to build that out

  589. a little bit more.

  590. We're going to see

  591. that deacons

  592. are there

  593. to multiply

  594. the work of pastors.

  595. A deacon

  596. multiplies

  597. the work

  598. of pastors.

  599. The Bible says,

  600. by the way,

  601. almost nothing

  602. about deacons.

  603. We find no job description.

  604. We find no roles

  605. and responsibilities.

  606. We only get

  607. a glimpse

  608. of the prototype

  609. of deacons

  610. from Acts chapter 6

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  611. and we only have

  612. these qualifications

  613. for deacons

  614. in one place

  615. in 1 Timothy chapter 3

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  616. and we only get

  617. a glimpse

  618. of maybe

  619. what they do

  620. through the use

  621. of the word

  622. servant.

  623. Diaconess

  624. is servant

  625. and so

  626. it's still

  627. a little fuzzy

  628. as it were.

  629. What is it

  630. specifically

  631. that a deacon

  632. is meant to do?

  633. I think the best

  634. way to answer

  635. this question

  636. is to

  637. understand

  638. that we've

  639. just begun

  640. chapter 3

  641. in a discussion

  642. about elders.

  643. And so I think

  644. we can say

  645. with a fair amount

  646. of certainty

  647. and without

  648. any

  649. pushback

  650. that a deacon

  651. is not

  652. an elder.

  653. Would you agree?

  654. I think that's

  655. pretty clear

  656. from the text.

  657. A deacon

  658. is not an elder.

  659. It's a separate

  660. category,

  661. a separate function.

  662. So just to review

  663. from last week

  664. in understanding

  665. what elders

  666. are meant to do,

  667. we come to

  668. realize

  669. that elders

  670. are there

  671. to exercise

  672. spiritual oversight.

  673. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  674. chapter 5.

  675. They're there

  676. to preach

  677. and to teach.

  678. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  679. chapter 5.

  680. They are tasked

  681. with equipping

  682. the saints

  683. for ministry.

  684. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  685. chapter 4.

  686. They are to

  687. guard the flock

  688. from false teachers

  689. in Acts

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  690. chapter 20.

  691. They're to

  692. shepherd the flock

  693. by providing

  694. some measure

  695. of spiritual

  696. oversight

  697. in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  698. chapter 5.

  699. They're to

  700. hold firm

  701. the trustworthy

  702. word in order

  703. to give instruction

  704. and rebuke

  705. those who

  706. contradict.

  707. Titus

    Titus 1 chapter mention

  708. chapter 1.

  709. We understand

  710. from 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  711. chapter 1

  712. that leaders

  713. and spiritual

  714. pastors

  715. are there

  716. to charge

  717. some

  718. if they teach

  719. no other

  720. doctrine.

  721. They're also

  722. to set an

  723. example for

  724. the believers.

  725. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 4:12

  726. chapter 4

  727. verse 12.

  728. They're to

  729. have nothing

  730. to do with

  731. foolish controversies

  732. or quarrels

  733. but to be

  734. kind,

  735. enduring evil,

  736. correcting opponents

  737. with gentleness.

  738. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 2:23

  739. chapter 2

  740. verse 23

  741. and 24.

  742. That is the

  743. function and

  744. role of a

  745. pastor,

  746. leader,

  747. overseer.

  748. It is not

  749. the role

  750. of a deacon.

  751. But

  752. the function

  753. that deacons

  754. have,

  755. although different

  756. from an elder,

  757. is compatible

  758. with an elder.

  759. and so

  760. they are

  761. side by

  762. side in

  763. this passage

  764. for a

  765. significant

  766. reason

  767. because

  768. pastors

  769. and elders

  770. need the

  771. support

  772. and the

  773. help

  774. in ministry

  775. of others.

  776. There are times

  777. when ministry

  778. gets to be

  779. unwieldy

  780. and they need

  781. the supportive

  782. help and

  783. service of

  784. other gifted

  785. and qualified

  786. men to come

  787. alongside them.

  788. It is

  789. then with

  790. the discretion

  791. of the

  792. elders

  793. then to

  794. determine

  795. how the

  796. deacons

  797. will be

  798. put to

  799. work.

  800. As I

  801. have said

  802. in the

  803. opening,

  804. elders

  805. will serve

  806. by leading

  807. and deacons

  808. will lead

  809. by serving.

  810. Deacon

  811. multiplies

  812. the work

  813. of pastors

  814. by carrying

  815. various

  816. ministry

  817. burdens

  818. so that the

  819. church can

  820. remain healthy

  821. and pastors

  822. can continue

  823. to devote

  824. themselves

  825. to the

  826. primary

  827. work

  828. of

  829. equipping

  830. and

  831. discipling

  832. and teaching

  833. and preaching.

  834. It's not

  835. that every

  836. pastor,

  837. especially,

  838. it's not

  839. that any

  840. pastor

  841. will be

  842. independent

  843. of service

  844. because

  845. at the

  846. foundational

  847. level,

  848. since we're

  849. all called

  850. to service

  851. kind of

  852. ministry,

  853. you would

  854. expect your

  855. pastors to

  856. serve as

  857. well.

  858. But the

  859. deacons come

  860. alongside to

  861. help support

  862. that effort.

  863. We don't have

  864. time this

  865. morning to

  866. build out

  867. this next

  868. point,

  869. the life

  870. of a servant

  871. leader.

  872. We find in

  873. verses 8 to

  874. 13,

  875. we're going to

  876. turn our

  877. attention to

  878. that a little

  879. bit more

  880. next week,

  881. but I just

  882. want to

  883. kind of give

  884. you a preview

  885. of what we're

  886. talking about.

  887. The life of a

  888. servant leader.

  889. Let me read

  890. this passage

  891. one more time

  892. and then I'll

  893. show you a

  894. couple of

  895. tables that

  896. demonstrate the

  897. similarities and

  898. the differences

  899. between an

  900. elder and a

  901. deacon so

  902. you can see

  903. that for

  904. yourself and

  905. then like I

  906. said we'll

  907. explain it

  908. more next

  909. week.

  910. It says

  911. deacons likewise

  912. must be

  913. dignified,

  914. not double

  915. tongue,

  916. not addicted

  917. to much

  918. wine,

  919. not greedy

  920. for dishonest

  921. gain.

  922. They must

  923. hold the

  924. mystery of

  925. the faith

  926. with a clear

  927. conscience and

  928. let them also

  929. first be tested

  930. then let them

  931. serve as

  932. deacons.

  933. If they prove

  934. themselves

  935. blameless,

  936. their wives

  937. likewise must be

  938. dignified,

  939. not slanderers,

  940. but sober-minded,

  941. faithful in

  942. all things,

  943. let the deacons

  944. each be the

  945. husband of one

  946. wife, managing

  947. their children and

  948. their households

  949. well.

  950. For those who

  951. serve well as

  952. deacons gain a

  953. good standing for

  954. themselves and

  955. also great

  956. confidence in the

  957. faith that is in

  958. Christ Jesus.

  959. There are 15

  960. qualifications for

  961. elder, there are

  962. nine qualifications

  963. that are given to

  964. us here for

  965. deacons and

  966. there are five

  967. qualifications that

  968. find really good

  969. comparison and

  970. overlap with one

  971. another.

  972. There are things

  973. that are similar.

  974. What is the same?

  975. And here's a table

  976. that will demonstrate

  977. several of those

  978. things that are the

  979. same.

  980. They are above

  981. reproach.

  982. They have the kind

  983. of character that

  984. is not guilty of

  985. blame.

  986. They're blameless.

  987. There is this

  988. essence of their

  989. character that you

  990. can't attach blame

  991. to.

  992. These are individuals

  993. who are faithful to

  994. their wife.

  995. They're a one woman

  996. man.

  997. We talked about that

  998. last week.

  999. There is this

  1000. faithfulness to their

  1001. partner.

1002. There is a desire of

  1003. their heart to make

  1004. sure that they're

  1005. guarding their eye as

  1006. Job says in his

  1007. book.

  1008. He guards his eye.

  1009. He has a single

  1010. mind and a single

  1011. heart for the woman

  1012. that God gave to

  1013. him.

  1014. He's not given to

  1015. much wine.

  1016. He's not greedy for

  1017. gain.

  1018. He manages his house

  1019. well.

  1020. You can see the

  1021. quality of leadership

  1022. and service that

  1023. echoes itself through

  1024. his family.

  1025. You can recognize

  1026. that their needs are

  1027. met, that they're

  1028. cared for, that

  1029. dad has paid

  1030. attention to them.

  1031. There's a measure of

  1032. stability and respect

  1033. in the home.

  1034. But there are some

  1035. things that are

  1036. different.

  1037. What is different?

  1038. And this next table

  1039. will help show some

  1040. comparisons.

  1041. While elders have

  1042. some qualifications

  1043. regarding their

  1044. tongue at not being

  1045. quarrelsome, deacons

1046. are told not to be

  1047. double-tongued.

  1048. They're not to be

  1049. hypocrites in the way

  1050. they speak.

  1051. Speaking one way to

  1052. one person a different

  1053. way to a different

  1054. person.

  1055. For elders, they're

  1056. not violent but

  1057. gentle.

  1058. And for deacons, they

  1059. hold the mystery of

  1060. the faith.

  1061. And we'll talk about

  1062. that some more next

  1063. week, especially in

  1064. light of the mission

1065. that God has called us

1066. as a church to be on.

  1067. They're not a recent

  1068. convert.

  1069. And for deacons,

  1070. there's not a

  1071. qualification for how

  1072. soon they can become

  1073. a deacon because

  1074. essentially, we're all

  1075. to be deacons the

  1076. moment we become

  1077. Christians in

  1078. following after Jesus.

  1079. But of course, we're

  1080. building and growing

  1081. through that process

  1082. of doing it better.

1083. But they do need to

  1084. be tested.

  1085. We find this

  1086. qualification, it's

  1087. actually in verse 11,

  1088. for their wives.

  1089. And we'll develop that

  1090. some more next week

  1091. as well.

  1092. But there's nothing

  1093. about hospitality.

  1094. There's nothing about

  1095. a good reputation.

  1096. Not that those things

  1097. don't matter.

1098. And again, as we come

1099. back to this next week,

  1100. we'll see the

  1101. significance of the

  1102. way Paul describes

  1103. their function.

1104. But I do want to end

  1105. with this.

  1106. There is a reward.

  1107. What is the reward?

  1108. And the reward is

  1109. found for us in

  1110. verse 13.

  1111. Those who serve well

  1112. as deacons gain a

  1113. good standing for

  1114. themselves and also

  1115. great confidence in

1116. the faith that is in

  1117. Christ Jesus.

  1118. They gain a good

  1119. standing for

  1120. themselves.

  1121. One commentator

  1122. says, this linear

  1123. aspect of this verb

  1124. to gain or to

  1125. inquire helps us

  1126. understand this

  1127. ongoing process.

  1128. There is this

  1129. process of growing

  1130. and developing and

  1131. being sanctified

  1132. through serving

  1133. others.

  1134. And as people

  1135. watch and evaluate

  1136. their life, they're

  1137. going to see this

  1138. growing concern for

  1139. individuals, this

  1140. growing heart to

  1141. spend themselves for

  1142. others, this desire

  1143. to be useful to

  1144. Jesus and especially

  1145. to point to his

  1146. perfect service.

  1147. And as they are

  1148. moving and growing

  1149. in this good

  1150. standing, they're

  1151. growing in confidence

  1152. and faith as well.

  1153. And the reason for

  1154. that is because as

  1155. they see the Lord

  1156. working in their life

  1157. and helping them to

  1158. grow in their

  1159. expression of service

  1160. for others, they're

  1161. recognizing that the

  1162. process of Philippians

    Philippians 1:6

  1163. chapter 1 verse 6 is

  1164. playing out.

1165. That he who began a

1166. good work in them has

  1167. been faithful to

  1168. complete it, is being

  1169. faithful to complete

  1170. it.

  1171. This growing process of

  1172. God sanctifying their

  1173. life helps to confirm

  1174. the fact that they

1175. have the fruit of the

  1176. spirit, they're loving

  1177. God's people, and

  1178. they're growing in

  1179. service for others.

1180. But as we turn our

  1181. attention now to the

  1182. preeminent servant to

  1183. Jesus, we remember

  1184. what Jesus demonstrates

1185. to us again from Mark

    Mark 10:45

  1186. chapter 10 verse 45.

1187. Even the Son of Man

1188. came not to be served,

1189. but to serve and to

1190. give his life a ransom

  1191. for many.

  1192. Jesus has demonstrated

  1193. for us the foundational

  1194. level of growing in

  1195. spiritual maturity.

  1196. it begins with

  1197. recognizing who Jesus

  1198. is, and begins with

  1199. recognizing what we

  1200. really deserve in light

  1201. of judgment, and the

  1202. privilege that we have

1203. of now being united in

1204. Christ, and being able to

  1205. serve Christ's body.

1206. Do you realize, as you

  1207. look around, you'll be

  1208. the people who are

1209. sitting with you on your

  1210. pew.

  1211. the people who are

  1212. sitting before you and

  1213. behind you.

1214. That they are part of

  1215. God's family.

1216. So when you serve the

1217. family of God, when you

  1218. serve God's children, you

  1219. are serving God.

  1220. What an incredible

  1221. privilege.

  1222. What an incredible

  1223. responsibility.

1224. And so as we do this, as

1225. we grow in service for

1226. others, we have the joy

  1227. through service of

  1228. pointing to Christ.

1229. Because let me tell you,

  1230. our world does not

  1231. serve.

  1232. They don't serve by

  1233. their own desire.

  1234. They don't choose to

  1235. serve.

1236. But when we follow in

  1237. the footsteps of Christ,

1238. when we choose to do the

  1239. things that really we

  1240. don't get attention for,

  1241. we don't get promoted

  1242. for, we demonstrate that

1243. there is a work of God in

1244. our lives, and we point

  1245. to Christ, the gospel

  1246. through our service.

1247. I'm going to pray for

  1248. us.

1249. I'm going to invite the

  1250. men to come forward.

  1251. We'll commemorate and

  1252. remember this work of

  1253. Christ, of drawing us

  1254. into himself.

1255. And then we'll close our

  1256. time together.

  1257. Father, thank you for

  1258. sending Jesus.

  1259. Thank you for overcoming

  1260. our sin.

1261. Thank you for making a

  1262. way of forgiveness, in

  1263. salvation, in cleansing,

  1264. and relationship with

  1265. you.

1266. Thank you that that new

  1267. relationship, that new

  1268. position that we enjoy

1269. because of Jesus, has not

1270. only drawn us in to this

1271. rich union with God, but

1272. has drawn us in to

  1273. fellowship with one

  1274. another.

1275. And the distinct joy that

1276. we have because of the

1277. work of the Spirit in our

1278. life to serve those around

1279. us and to point to

  1280. Christ.

1281. Oh God, may we grow in

  1282. this service.

1283. And may all glory and

  1284. praise redound to you

  1285. because of it.

  1286. In Jesus' name.

  1287. Amen.

  1288. Amen.

  1289. Thank you.
