  1. Open your Bibles, if you would please, to 1 Timothy chapter 5.

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  2. ! 1 Timothy chapter 5.

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  3. !

  4. We're going to be picking up at verse 17, and it opens this way.

  5. It says,

  6. Let the elders who rule be counted worthy of double honor.

  7. Let the elders who rule be counted of double honor.

  8. So, there's at least two reasons why this is challenging this morning.

  9. First is because when we hear the word rule,

  10. I don't know about you, but there's flashes of,

  11. what does that mean?

  12. Who am I submitting myself to?

  13. And how in the world can I possibly honor that kind of leader?

  14. A kind of leader who rules.

  15. We've come to understand the challenges of authority

  16. that are misappropriated and overused in our culture,

  17. and so we tend to bristle against leadership and authority and rule.

  18. So, we need to understand what the Bible says about that kind of spiritual leadership.

  19. What does it look like?

  20. The second reason why this is a challenging passage

  21. is because it seems a little self-serving, to be quite honest with you.

  22. Because as an elder, here I am trying to instruct you,

  23. as we're walking through this passage,

  24. Honor me!

  25. Ha ha!

  26. Hey, you need to give me double honor.

  27. You need to consider me worthy.

  28. That just doesn't go well.

  29. And so, it's not really a passage that I prefer to preach, quite honestly.

  30. But this is how we do it.

  31. Working through passages, working through texts.

  32. And so, we preach the things that we like,

  33. and we preach the things we don't.

  34. And we understand this guiding principle.

  35. We understand, as Paul will write in the second letter to Timothy,

  36. he'll say in chapter 3, verses 16 and 17, he says,

  37. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and it is profitable.

  38. Right?

  39. Profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction, and righteousness,

  40. so that the man of God might be perfect, thoroughly equipped,

  41. for every good work.

  42. And so, this is in God's word, and this is good for you.

  43. This is good for me.

  44. God has given us leaders.

  45. And leaders are good.

  46. And when we come to understand the right kind of response to leaders,

  47. then we come to enjoy the benefits of good spiritual leadership.

  48. All throughout the Bible, we have seen God's design for leaders.

  49. And it's not the kind of leadership that we would come to assume in culture today.

  50. If we were to characterize leadership in culture today,

  51. some of the things that might come to your mind are things like charisma.

  52. Man, he's full of energy.

  53. He draws attention.

  54. He's inspirational.

  55. Or he's a great vision caster.

  56. He knows what's coming.

  57. He knows the steps on how to get there.

  58. He can cast that vision, and he can draw people along with him.

  59. Maybe he has the gift of communication.

  60. He knows how to articulate difficult concepts.

  61. He knows how to inspire and draw people to his message.

  62. Maybe he has that winning personality.

  63. Or he has that courage.

  64. Or maybe he has this driving work ethic.

  65. Whatever it is that we associate with good leadership,

  66. that's maybe some of the ideas that we get.

  67. But I want you to know, in God's economy,

  68. the best spiritual leaders are the best followers.

  69. The best spiritual leaders are the best followers.

  70. Make no mistake.

  71. Those who have learned to lead God's people,

  72. those who have been entrusted with the greatest responsibility

  73. of providing direction and leadership and authority

  74. and care and love for God's people throughout time

  75. have been those who have learned to walk in the steps of God.

  76. To know what the Bible says

  77. and to align their heart and life

  78. to do what God's Word says.

  79. That's why when the Apostle Paul is giving qualifications

  80. for spiritual leaders back in chapter 3 of 1 Timothy,

  81. that's what he brings to the surface.

  82. That's what he wants to bring out front.

  83. It's not how great they are at communicating.

  84. It's not how gifted they are at crafting vision

  85. or their strategic nature.

  86. No, it's all about their character.

  87. It's all about do they know what the Bible says

  88. and have they incorporated it into their life?

  89. The greatest spiritual leaders are the ones who've learned

  90. to be the greatest followers of God.

  91. We think about Moses.

  92. I mean, I love the exercise

  93. and I would just encourage it for you.

  94. Even this afternoon, read through the book of Exodus

  95. and just do this exercise.

  96. Every time you see,

  97. and God said,

  98. followed by,

  99. and Moses did,

  100. underline those phrases

  101. and you will be blown away.

  102. The leadership of God over Moses' life,

  103. that was preeminent.

  104. That's what made him a spiritual leader.

  105. It shows up in the life of Joshua.

  106. Here he's concerned about stepping in

  107. to the shadow of this great leader Moses.

  108. And what's the encouragement that God gives to Joshua?

  109. We find it in Joshua 1, 8, and 9.

  110. This is the key for success, Joshua.

  111. You want to be a great leader?

  112. Here's what it looks like.

  113. This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth.

  114. You shall meditate on it day and night,

  115. that you may observe to do according

  116. to all that is written in it.

  117. For then you will make your way prosperous

  118. and then you will have good success.

  119. Have I not commanded you?

  120. Be strong and of a good courage.

  121. Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed.

  122. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

  123. Joshua, you want to be a great leader?

  124. Follow me.

  125. Know my word and follow my commands.

  126. And I will be with you.

  127. I will prosper you.

  128. And I will fulfill my objectives through you.

  129. Trust me.

  130. Follow me.

  131. And then lead the people to do the same.

  132. That becomes the pattern throughout all of Scripture.

  133. We don't have time this morning to talk about all of the examples through Scripture.

  134. But we see it on and on and on as we move our way through the Scripture.

  135. Leaders who are marked by humility.

  136. Marked by obedience to God.

  137. Courage to proclaim God's word.

  138. To accept the challenges that come.

  139. Men who have learned to listen and follow God.

  140. And that's what we're going to see in our passage today.

  141. We're going to see that those kinds of leaders that have risen up and have followed God in the greatest ways.

  142. And are now entrusted with this great responsibility of leading and exercising authority over God's family.

  143. They're to do it in a way that is recognized.

  144. Do it in a way that is met with the care of God's family.

  145. God's people.

  146. In our passage there are going to be four commands.

  147. Four imperatives that we're going to run across and move through as we work our way through this passage.

  148. Four imperatives that we find throughout this passage.

  149. That address us as a church in our response and care for the spiritual leaders that God has set over us.

  150. First, a church must honor its leaders.

  151. A church must honor its leaders.

  152. Let me read this passage for us and then we'll jump into our text for today.

  153. Beginning again at verse 17.

  154. It says this.

  155. Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor.

  156. Especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.

  157. For the scripture says you shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.

  158. And the laborer deserves his wages.

  159. Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses.

  160. As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all so the rest may stand in fear.

  161. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels,

  162. I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality.

  163. Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others.

  164. Keep yourselves pure.

  165. No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.

  166. The sins of some people are conspicuous.

  167. Going before them to judgment.

  168. But the sins of others appear later.

  169. So also, good works are conspicuous.

  170. And even those that are not cannot remain hidden.

  171. Excuse me.

  172. We find four commands in this passage.

  173. The first command is right there at the front of verse 17.

  174. It says,

  175. Be considered worthy.

  176. That's our first command.

  177. Honor your leaders.

  178. And there are several ways that we're informed or encouraged on how to honor our leaders

  179. and the reasons for why we should honor them.

  180. Well, we honor them, first of all, because of their service to the body.

  181. Honor them because of their service to the body.

  182. Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor.

  183. Honor.

  184. This word to be considered worthy is a present tense.

  185. It's a present imperative.

  186. It's a command that Paul is issuing to this church.

  187. Recognize your responsibility to provide honor.

  188. This double honor, as he says.

  189. This respect.

  190. It's really the word to know.

  191. To recognize.

  192. To be aware.

  193. To call attention to.

  194. Recognize those among you who are serving, leading, ruling well.

  195. Recognize them and respect them.

  196. Respect them in a way that calls attention to their life.

  197. Respect them in a way that aligns your heart and life to identify and to submit to and to revere what God has called them to do.

  198. There is this responsibility to esteem them well.

  199. And we esteem them in a couple of different ways.

  200. We esteem them by drawing attention to the work that they do and by supporting them in ministry.

  201. But who are these elders after all?

  202. Who are they?

  203. Well, they can be older men or older women.

  204. We actually see that at the beginning of this chapter.

  205. These two words.

  206. Presbyteros.

  207. It refers to both older men and older women.

  208. In verses 1 and 2.

  209. It says,

  210. Do not rebuke an older man.

  211. That's our word.

  212. Presbyteros.

  213. And younger men as brothers.

  214. Older women.

  215. That's also presbyteros.

  216. As mothers.

  217. Younger women as sisters.

  218. But it's also used extensively throughout the gospels.

  219. The word elders refers to these spiritual leaders who were there among the people of God.

  220. And it's often attached to scribes and Pharisees and to the religious leaders there in Jerusalem.

  221. The elders that were there.

  222. This word is common in Judaism to describe religious leadership.

  223. It was also then applied to the spiritual leadership within the church.

  224. These elders who were exercising leadership and authority among God's people.

  225. We see that in chapter 4 verse 14.

  226. Just look at that for a moment.

  227. Where Paul tells Timothy,

  228. Do not neglect the gift you have which was given to you by prophecy.

  229. When the council of elders laid their hands on you.

  230. This group of spiritual leaders in the church recognized the gifts that God had given to you.

  231. They appointed you for ministry.

  232. So when we're speaking of an elder, we're speaking of spiritual leaders in the church.

  233. The usage in the New Testament.

  234. We see elders and overseers used interchangeably throughout the New Testament.

  235. We saw that word overseer in chapter 3 verses 1 and following.

  236. Here we see the word elder.

  237. And those two words are used interchangeably in Titus chapter 1.

    Titus 1 chapter mention

  238. Titus 1.5 says this.

  239. This is why I left you in Crete.

  240. That you might put what remained into order and appoint elders in every town as I directed you.

  241. And then a couple verses later.

  242. For an overseer as God's steward must be above reproach.

  243. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain.

  244. And then on and on the list goes about his qualifications.

  245. We see that leaders, elders, pastors, overseers are interchangeable words throughout the New Testament

  246. to describe this spiritual leadership.

  247. But what do these leaders do?

  248. Well, they're leaders who rule.

  249. They're leaders who exercise authority.

  250. This word for rule is expressed and describes one who guides or directs.

  251. One who provides direction for the affairs of the church.

  252. One who provides this ongoing activity of authority over the church.

  253. As we observe the way that Paul uses this same term for overseer,

  254. we get a clearer picture of what they do.

  255. Even looking back to chapter 3, he will use this same word for rule

  256. when speaking of a way an elder and a deacon will manage their families.

  257. Notice chapter 3, verses 4 and 5.

  258. It says,

  259. He must manage, that's our word to rule here in chapter 5.

  260. He must manage his household well with all dignity.

  261. For if someone does not know how to manage his own household,

  262. how will he care for God's church?

  263. Do you get the sense of the kind of leadership,

  264. the kind of authority,

  265. the kind of rule that a pastor is meant to express for the church?

  266. The same kind of leadership that he exercises in his family?

  267. The same kind of tenderness and care he provides for his children,

  268. for his wife?

  269. The same kind of affection that he will demonstrate to those members of his own household?

  270. That's the kind of management that an elder is meant to exact in the church.

  271. The New Testament is full of principles that will set the boundaries,

  272. the guardrails, as it were,

  273. on how an elder is meant to govern the church.

  274. Christ will talk about and differentiate or contrast the leadership

  275. between the world and the elders within the church

  276. from Matthew chapter 20, verses 25 to 28,

    Matthew 20:25–28

  277. when he says this,

  278. Jesus called them, speaking of his disciples to him and said,

  279. you know that the rulers of the Gentiles lorded over them,

  280. and their great ones exercised authority over them.

  281. It shall not be so among you,

  282. but whoever would be great among you must be your servant.

  283. Whoever would be first among you must be your slave,

  284. even as the Son of Man came not to be served,

  285. but to serve,

  286. and to give his life a ransom for many.

  287. So the leadership in the church,

  288. the elders, the pastors, the overseers,

  289. their leadership is meant to reflect and resemble the leadership of Christ,

  290. which was a leadership preeminently of service,

  291. of spending, of love,

  292. not in lording it over and using their position as a means of power,

  293. but a ministry that will be directed by the word of God.

  294. It will be displayed the self-sacrificing care of God.

  295. It will be governed by the wisdom and directed by the wisdom of God,

  296. empowered by the spirit of God,

  297. and motivated for the glory of God.

  298. In every way,

  299. he is following after the Savior

  300. and leading others,

  301. encouraging others to follow along.

  302. His ministry will be bold

  303. and unwavering regarding the truth.

  304. He will seek to protect the flock.

  305. It will be marked with zeal and eagerness.

  306. It will be impartial.

  307. We find from 1 Corinthians,

  308. it will be steadfast,

  309. immovable,

  310. always abounding in the work of the Lord.

  311. It will be a ministry

  312. that resembles Christ and points to Christ.

  313. It's not a leadership for personal gain.

  314. It's not a leadership for fleecing the flock.

  315. It's not a leadership that is lording it over others.

  316. But it's also not a leadership that's weak.

  317. It's not a leadership that avoids conflict.

  318. It's not a leadership that will resist and run away from problems.

  319. No, it steps in.

  320. It's bold and seeks to guard others from danger.

  321. It's a leadership that's not just about making decisions,

  322. but in equipping others for ministry.

  323. This multiplying kind of leadership

  324. that elders and pastors are meant to have.

  325. Despite popular opinion,

  326. strong, godly leadership is good.

  327. It's good for you.

  328. It's good for us to have strong leaders

  329. that stand in the gap.

  330. It's good for us to have strong leaders

  331. who point the way to Christ.

  332. It's good for you to have leaders

  333. who care for your soul

  334. and seek to encourage you

  335. in things that may be difficult.

  336. It's good for you to have leaders

  337. who are able to devote themselves

  338. to the word of God

  339. and to instruct you in ways

  340. that will lead you and point you to him.

  341. Good leaders are good for the church.

  342. So the church has not only the responsibility,

  343. but the joy of honoring those leaders

  344. because of their ministry,

  345. but also because of their instruction in the word.

  346. And that's where we turn next.

  347. They honor those leaders

  348. because of their instruction in the word.

  349. Notice at the very end of verse 17,

  350. it says,

  351. especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.

  352. Everything in the Christian life

  353. is due to the word of God.

  354. Faith comes by hearing

  355. and hearing by the word of God.

  356. You have a relationship.

  357. I have a relationship with God

  358. because of the ministry of the word.

  359. Whoever that ministry came from,

  360. it came through the word.

  361. And so it's the word of God

  362. that lifts you and restores you

  363. in relationship to God himself.

  364. And it's the word of God

  365. that strengthens you

  366. for the work that God has called you to.

  367. As Jesus prays in John 17,

  368. he says,

  369. sanctify them by your truth.

  370. Your word is truth.

  371. So the people of God

  372. are strengthened and carried along

  373. by the word of God.

  374. What a joy it is

  375. to have spiritual leaders

  376. who have given themselves to know the word

  377. and have sought to teach that word to you.

  378. They labor in teaching and preaching.

  379. This word for labor is the work

  380. to describe that which is hard.

  381. Matter of fact,

  382. it's the work that comes

  383. to the point of fatigue and exhaustion.

  384. It tuckers them out.

  385. It makes them collapse into bed.

  386. But they do it because they're doing it,

  387. their work heartily as to the Lord

  388. and not to men.

  389. They do it because they are expending themselves

  390. for the things that matter.

  391. The church of Ephesus

  392. would have known precisely

  393. what Paul was talking about

  394. in this labor of ministry

  395. that he gave to them.

  396. Both public ministry

  397. and private ministry.

  398. We find this ministry

  399. of preaching and teaching

  400. and I think the translation

  401. does us a bit of a disservice.

  402. It says,

  403. those who labor in preaching

  404. and teaching

  405. and we get this image

  406. in our mind

  407. of what that must look like.

  408. We imagine somebody

  409. standing in front of a group

  410. preaching or teaching them

  411. or somebody perhaps

  412. that's in a Sunday school class

  413. or in some way

  414. teaching or preaching.

  415. But the literal translation of this

  416. is those who labor in the word

  417. and doctrine.

  418. These are not verbs.

  419. These are nouns.

  420. They have given themselves

  421. to the logos,

  422. to the word of God.

  423. They have given themselves

  424. to the teaching,

  425. to the instruction,

  426. to the word of God itself,

  427. to the doctrine of God.

  428. They've committed themselves

  429. to know what the Bible says

  430. and so in every interaction

  431. that they have,

  432. both personal and public,

  433. it's an interaction

  434. that is governed by their love

  435. for the word

  436. and is instructive

  437. and is helpful.

  438. God has blessed Maranatha

  439. with great teachers.

  440. And I'm not speaking of myself.

  441. The legacy of godly teachers

  442. in this church are immense.

  443. I think about the 60-year history

  444. that we have as a church

  445. and I think I am really only

  446. the third main pastor

  447. who's been here.

  448. I know there have been four.

  449. One was here for a short period of time

  450. but the legacy of faithful teaching

  451. and the ministry of building up

  452. the body because of the faithful teaching

  453. of the word of God.

  454. But I also think about

  455. the commitment of your other pastors

  456. to the word of God.

  457. I think of Pastor John

  458. every single Sunday morning.

  459. His commitment to the word of God

  460. in making sure that the songs

  461. that we sing

  462. in the transitions

  463. between the various songs

  464. that are introduced

  465. and making sure that

  466. they are Christ-centered

  467. and biblical

  468. and sound in theology.

  469. His interactions with you,

  470. especially teenagers

  471. and young men

  472. on Tuesday morning

  473. is instructive and helpful.

  474. It demonstrates his love

  475. for the word of God.

  476. And then Pastor David,

  477. how many of you

  478. at this church

  479. have been blessed

  480. by the ministry

  481. of Pastor David and Brenda?

  482. And I don't want to forget

  483. about Kristen.

  484. Their ministry,

  485. Pastor David and Brenda,

  486. especially the couples

  487. in the counseling,

  488. the leaders,

  489. the small group leaders,

  490. the various leaders

  491. of the ministries

  492. here at our church

  493. and the significance

  494. of that commitment

  495. to the word of God.

  496. You know when you ask them

  497. a question about the Bible

  498. that you can trust the answer.

  499. It's an answer

  500. that has been undergirded

  501. by a commitment

  502. to truth,

  503. to teaching,

  504. to the word.

  505. They've been faithful

  506. because of their faithfulness

  507. to the word.

  508. They deserve your honor

  509. and respect.

  510. I appreciate this quote

  511. from the book

  512. The Path to Being a Pastor.

  513. It says,

  514. These will be men

  515. who are masters

  516. of the word

  517. and mastered

  518. by the word.

  519. Men who are

  520. masters of the word

  521. and are mastered

  522. by the word.

  523. That's what we're talking about.

  524. We're talking about

  525. somebody who has

  526. the gift of teaching.

  527. Well, over a century ago,

  528. as Charles Haddon Spurgeon

  529. said of John Bunyan

  530. who wrote

  531. Pilgrim's Progress,

  532. he said this

  533. of John Bunyan.

  534. He said,

  535. Prick him anywhere

  536. and you will find

  537. that his blood

  538. is Bibline.

  539. The very essence

  540. of the Bible

  541. flows from him.

  542. He cannot speak

  543. without quoting a text

  544. for his soul

  545. is full

  546. of the word

  547. of God.

  548. That's the kind

  549. of leader

  550. we desire to be.

  551. That's the kind

  552. of leader

  553. that you

  554. need to commend.

  555. They've distinguished

  556. themselves

  557. as those

  558. who love

  559. the word

  560. and love you

  561. to the word.

  562. Finally,

  563. in this section,

  564. you honor them

  565. because of the teaching

  566. of the scripture.

  567. What does the Bible

  568. say about how you

  569. honor your leaders?

  570. Verse 18,

  571. for the scripture

  572. says,

  573. you shall not

  574. muzzle an ox

  575. when it treads out

  576. the grain

  577. and the laborer

  578. deserves his wages.

  579. The second part

  580. of this quote

  581. that's drawn

  582. from Christ's words

  583. in Luke,

  584. the first part

  585. of this quote

  586. that's drawn

  587. from the Old Testament.

  588. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 25 chapter mention

  589. chapter 25,

  590. 4 simply says,

  591. you shall not

  592. muzzle an ox

  593. when it treads

  594. out the grain.

  595. When the ox

  596. is doing the work,

  597. it's pulling

  598. that stone,

  599. it's rolling

  600. over the grain,

  601. you have a responsibility

  602. as the farmer

  603. to ensure

  604. you're doing

  605. that oxen

  606. good service.

  607. Paul reasons

  608. that if God

  609. could show

  610. concern

  611. in the law

  612. for an ox,

  613. then the congregation

  614. obviously

  615. needs to show

  616. concern

  617. for their pastor.

  618. That makes sense.

  619. And Christ himself

  620. in his own words

  621. to his disciples

  622. in Luke chapter 10,

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  623. he says this,

  624. after the Lord

  625. appointed the 72

  626. others

  627. and sent them

  628. on ahead of him

  629. two by two

  630. into every town

  631. and place

  632. where he himself

  633. was about to go,

  634. he says,

  635. go your way,

  636. behold,

  637. I am sending you

  638. out as lambs

  639. in the midst

  640. of wolves.

  641. Carry no money bag,

  642. no knapsack,

  643. no sandal

  644. and greet no one

  645. on the road.

  646. Wait a second,

  647. Jesus,

  648. what are you

  649. asking us to do?

  650. Carry no money,

  651. no knapsack?

  652. How are we going

  653. to care for ourselves?

  654. Well,

  655. don't worry.

  656. Don't worry.

  657. Remain in the same house,

  658. eating and drinking.

  659. What they provide

  660. for the laborer

  661. deserves his wages.

  662. Do not go

  663. from house to house.

  664. And I appreciate

  665. that second piece,

  666. the integrity

  667. of staying where you are

  668. in trusting the provision

  669. that God has given

  670. to you,

  671. not in trying to search

  672. out better options.

  673. Oh,

  674. that house over there

  675. has a pool.

  676. I think I'm going

  677. to go over there.

  678. Even though this place

  679. that I'm at

  680. is kind of stinky

  681. and kind of small.

  682. Trust the provision

  683. that God has given

  684. to you.

  685. Trust that God

  686. will provide.

  687. And church,

  688. be those

  689. who honor

  690. through support

  691. in honoring God's word.

  692. And I can say

  693. my experience

  694. at Maranatha

  695. has been

  696. that you

  697. have excelled

  698. in this.

  699. I'm grateful

  700. for how you

  701. have allowed

  702. the pastoral team

  703. to serve

  704. without having

  705. to worry

  706. about financial

  707. things.

  708. you have

  709. excelled

  710. in your care

  711. for your pastors.

  712. Thank you.

  713. Next,

  714. the next responsibility.

  715. We find

  716. in verse 19,

  717. it says

  718. a church

  719. must

  720. protect

  721. its leaders.

  722. A church

  723. must

  724. protect

  725. its leaders.

  726. Notice,

  727. do not

  728. admit

  729. a charge.

  730. That's another command.

  731. Do not

  732. admit

  733. a charge

  734. against

  735. an elder

  736. except

  737. on the

  738. evidence

  739. of two

  740. or three

  741. witnesses.

  742. This word

  743. for charge

  744. is the word

  745. for formal

  746. charges

  747. that are being

  748. brought.

  749. One commentator

  750. says this,

  751. quote,

  752. there are

  753. always people

  754. eager to

  755. falsely accuse

  756. a man of God.

  757. They may

  758. do so

  759. because they

  760. resent his

  761. calling,

  762. they reject

  763. his teaching,

  764. they resist

  765. biblical authority,

  766. they resent

  767. virtue,

  768. are jealous

  769. of the Lord's

  770. blessing on

  771. his life.

  772. Ultimately,

  773. however,

  774. they demonstrate

  775. by making

  776. such accusations

  777. that they

  778. have become

  779. messengers

  780. of Satan,

  781. end quote.

  782. We live

  783. in a time

  784. that is

  785. hostile

  786. to leadership.

  787. We live

  788. in a time,

  789. and I just

  790. read a book,

  791. and I won't

  792. tell you the

  793. title of the

  794. book,

  795. but I just

  796. read a book

  797. that the

  798. whole thing

  799. was about

  800. making sure

  801. you keep

  802. your leaders

  803. in check,

  804. and it

  805. doesn't

  806. incorporate

  807. really,

  808. as far as

  809. I'm concerned,

  810. any real

  811. biblical,

  812. any biblical

  813. instructions

  814. related to it.

  815. It's all

  816. built in

  817. culture,

  818. it's all

  819. built on

  820. the day

  821. and time

  822. in which we

  823. live,

  824. and not

  825. established

  826. on the

  827. foundation

  828. or principles

  829. of God's

  830. word.

  831. And Paul

  832. will move

  833. to this

  834. next.

  835. Certainly,

  836. your leaders

  837. are not

  838. without

  839. problems,

  840. okay?

  841. And I'll

  842. be the

  843. first to

  844. admit that

  845. your leaders

  846. make mistakes,

  847. your leaders

  848. sin.

  849. I'll go so

  850. far as to

  851. say that

  852. there are

  853. times where

  854. we sin

  855. against you,

  856. and that

  857. will be dealt

  858. with in just

  859. a moment.

  860. But so

  861. often in

  862. today's day

  863. and age,

  864. the smallest

  865. offense,

  866. the smallest

  867. problem,

  868. I can't even

  869. remember,

  870. this is going

  871. back several

  872. years now,

  873. and I had

  874. somebody come

  875. to me and

  876. said,

  877. I'm really

  878. angry at

  879. you,

  880. Pastor Andrew.

  881. And I

  882. said,

  883. really?

  884. Tell me,

  885. what did I

  886. do?

  887. And he

  888. said,

  889. well,

  890. six months

  891. ago,

  892. you walked

  893. down these

  894. stairs,

  895. you walked

  896. right past

  897. me,

  898. and you

  899. didn't even

  900. acknowledge

  901. me.

  902. I'm like,

  903. wow,

  904. why didn't

  905. you tell me

  906. this six

  907. months ago?

  908. I am so

  909. sorry,

  910. we could have

  911. cleared this

  912. up a long

  913. time ago.

  914. But this

  915. is the day

  916. and age

  917. in which

  918. we live.

  919. And by

  920. the way,

  921. I'll tell

  922. you,

  923. there are

  924. actual

  925. ministries

  926. that target

  927. pastors for

  928. this specific

  929. purpose.

  930. They want

  931. to dismantle

  932. the ministry,

  933. they want

  934. to discredit

  935. the ministry,

  936. they want

  937. to blow

  938. up the

  939. church.

  940. Can I

  941. encourage

  942. each of

  943. you

  944. to

  945. seek

  946. to

  947. honor

  948. your

  949. leaders,

  950. to give

  951. them the

  952. benefit

  953. of the

  954. doubt.

  955. I'm

  956. thinking

  957. particularly

  958. of 1

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  959. Corinthians

  960. chapter

  961. 13,

  962. where Paul

  963. says that

  964. the quality

  965. of love

  966. is it bears

  967. all things,

  968. it believes

  969. all things,

  970. it hopes

  971. all things,

  972. it endures

  973. all things.

  974. Now,

  975. certainly,

  976. the apostle

  977. Paul isn't

  978. trying to

  979. set leaders

  980. apart and

  981. trying to say

  982. that they

  983. don't have

  984. any accountability

  985. because that's

  986. where we go

  987. next.

  988. You need

  989. to protect

  990. your leaders

  991. but you

  992. need to

  993. understand

  994. that a

  995. church must

  996. also

  997. discipline

  998. its sinning

  999. leaders.

  1000. A church

  1001. does have

  1002. a responsibility

  1003. to hold

  1004. their leaders

  1005. accountable.

  1006. We find

  1007. that in

  1008. verses 20

  1009. and 21.

  1010. As for

  1011. those who

  1012. persist in

  1013. sin,

  1014. rebuke

  1015. them in

  1016. the presence

  1017. of all

  1018. so that

  1019. the rest

  1020. may fear.

  1021. In the

  1022. presence of

  1023. God,

  1024. of Christ

  1025. Jesus

  1026. and the

  1027. elect angels,

  1028. I charge

  1029. you to

  1030. keep these

  1031. rules without

  1032. prejudging,

  1033. doing nothing

  1034. from

  1035. partiality.

  1036. We're all

  1037. aware,

  1038. especially in

  1039. the last

  1040. several months

  1041. and several

  1042. years,

  1043. of the

  1044. failures of

  1045. really prominent

  1046. pastors.

  1047. We know

  1048. the devastating

  1049. effect that

  1050. that sin

  1051. has on

  1052. individuals that

  1053. they're interacting

  1054. with and the

  1055. churches that

  1056. they serve.

  1057. We know

  1058. how that

  1059. discredits

  1060. their

  1061. ministry,

  1062. how that

  1063. dishonors

  1064. the name

  1065. of God,

  1066. how that

  1067. brings a

  1068. measure of

  1069. tarnish to

  1070. the beauty

  1071. of the

  1072. gospel.

  1073. We recognize

  1074. the significance

  1075. of sin and

  1076. the effects that

  1077. it has on

  1078. the church

  1079. itself.

  1080. And the

  1081. leaders of

  1082. God's church,

  1083. those who have

  1084. been called to

  1085. spiritual leadership

  1086. within the

  1087. church,

  1088. because of

  1089. the public

  1090. nature of

  1091. their ministry,

  1092. the apostle

  1093. Paul is

  1094. helping Timothy

  1095. understand public

  1096. sin must be

  1097. treated in

  1098. public ways.

  1099. And so when

  1100. he's confronted

  1101. and when he

  1102. persists in

  1103. sin and when

  1104. you see this

  1105. characteristic of

  1106. his life continues

  1107. and there's no

  1108. posture for

  1109. repentance or

  1110. changing his

  1111. heart,

  1112. you must stand

  1113. before the

  1114. congregation and

  1115. rebuke and

  1116. provide discipline

  1117. and confrontation

  1118. of him in the

  1119. presence of

  1120. all.

  1121. Why?

  1122. So the rest

  1123. will fear.

  1124. It stands as a

  1125. significant warning

  1126. to the rest of

  1127. the body of the

  1128. seriousness of

  1129. sin.

  1130. It helps to

  1131. expose the

  1132. nature of his

  1133. leadership and

  1134. helps to

  1135. protect and

  1136. preserve the

  1137. body of Christ

  1138. from those

  1139. things that

  1140. would cause

  1141. harm.

  1142. Timothy, as

  1143. we've seen

  1144. throughout this

  1145. letter, going

  1146. back to chapter

  1147. one, what is

  1148. the mandate?

  1149. He is to

  1150. charge some so

  1151. they teach no

  1152. other doctrine.

  1153. Why?

  1154. Because it

  1155. would lead to

  1156. shipwreck.

  1157. That's what he

  1158. says later on

  1159. in chapter one.

  1160. It has eternal

  1161. ramifications.

  1162. So for the

  1163. sake of the

  1164. beauty of Christ

  1165. and the gospel

  1166. message, do what

  1167. is necessary to

  1168. keep him in

  1169. check.

  1170. Rebuke him in

  1171. the presence of

  1172. all so the

  1173. rest may fear.

  1174. So the rest

  1175. might understand

  1176. the seriousness

  1177. of sin.

  1178. So the rest

  1179. may come to

  1180. terms with how

  1181. their sin is

  1182. also leading

  1183. maybe to

  1184. smaller effects

  1185. in the circles

  1186. in which they

  1187. run.

  1188. You have a

  1189. responsibility to

  1190. protect him, but

  1191. you also have a

  1192. responsibility to

  1193. discipline him.

  1194. Finally, in

  1195. verses 22 to

  1196. 25, a church

  1197. must promote

  1198. its leaders.

  1199. A church must

  1200. promote its

  1201. leaders.

  1202. It says,

  1203. do not be

  1204. hasty in the

  1205. laying on of

  1206. hands.

  1207. That's our

  1208. imperative.

  1209. That's our

  1210. command here.

  1211. Nor take part

  1212. in the sins of

  1213. others.

  1214. Keep yourself

  1215. pure.

  1216. No longer drink

  1217. only water, but

  1218. use a little

  1219. wine for the

  1220. sake of your

  1221. stomach and your

  1222. frequent ailments.

  1223. sins.

  1224. The sins of

  1225. some people are

  1226. conspicuous, going

  1227. before them to

  1228. judgment, but the

  1229. sins of others

  1230. appear later.

  1231. So also good

  1232. works are

  1233. conspicuous, and

  1234. even those that

  1235. are not cannot

  1236. remain hidden.

  1237. There's the

  1238. principle of

  1239. promoting, and

  1240. this laying on

  1241. of hands is

  1242. likely the

  1243. confirmation of

  1244. these men, these

  1245. leaders who have

  1246. risen up within

  1247. the church, this

  1248. confirmation of

  1249. their role of

  1250. leadership, similar

1251. to what we saw in

  1252. chapter 4, verse

  1253. 14, that council

  1254. of elders that

  1255. laid hands on

  1256. Timothy, kind of

  1257. commissioning him

  1258. to ministry.

  1259. This is what we're

  1260. talking about here.

  1261. And Paul wants

  1262. Timothy to

  1263. understand, because

  1264. of the serious

  1265. nature of

  1266. leadership, take

  1267. your time.

  1268. Be patient.

  1269. Don't rush

  1270. into it.

  1271. And there's two

  1272. amazing,

  1273. benefits that we

  1274. see here.

  1275. We see that the

  1276. sins of people,

  1277. some people, are

  1278. obvious, they're

  1279. conspicuous.

  1280. You wait long

  1281. enough, you're

  1282. going to see

  1283. their sin.

  1284. You're going to

  1285. see their sinful

  1286. tendencies, you're

  1287. going to see how

  1288. they relate to

  1289. others, you're

  1290. going to recognize

  1291. whether or not

  1292. they're fit for

  1293. ministry.

  1294. That's why in

  1295. chapter 3, the

  1296. apostle Paul says

  1297. make sure that

  1298. he's not a

  1299. novice, these

  1300. elders, and for

  1301. deacons, make

  1302. sure that they're

  1303. first tested.

  1304. You want to make

  1305. sure the leaders

  1306. that you have

  1307. are those who

  1308. represent the

  1309. consistent, faithful

  1310. integrity of

  1311. walking and

  1312. following after

  1313. God.

  1314. They do that

  1315. long enough, you

  1316. will know their

  1317. true nature.

  1318. You'll either see

  1319. their obvious

  1320. sins, or the

  1321. flip side is

  1322. you're going to

  1323. see their obvious

  1324. works, their good

  1325. works, their true

  1326. heart, their

  1327. faithful character,

  1328. their integrity,

  1329. their love for

  1330. others, their

  1331. zeal for the

  1332. scriptures, their

  1333. passion for

  1334. service, their

  1335. humility and

  1336. obedience.

  1337. You'll see those

  1338. things, they're

  1339. going to come to

  1340. light, just trust

  1341. the process and be

  1342. patient along the

  1343. way.

  1344. Having godly

  1345. leaders is so

  1346. important, Timothy.

  1347. Take your time, be

  1348. patient, but the

  1349. other principle

  1350. that's important for

  1351. us to understand

  1352. here too, is that

  1353. it is the church

  1354. that's responsible

  1355. for promoting

  1356. leaders to their

  1357. place.

  1358. Going back to

  1359. chapter 3, verse

  1360. 1, it says, the

  1361. saying is

  1362. trustworthy.

  1363. If anyone aspires

  1364. to the office of

  1365. overseer, he

  1366. desires a noble

  1367. task.

  1368. Therefore, an

  1369. overseer must be

  1370. above reproach, and

  1371. so on and so

  1372. forth.

  1373. In other words,

  1374. just because a

  1375. young man

  1376. aspires to

  1377. leadership and

  1378. wants this good

  1379. thing, is not

  1380. an automatic for

  1381. them to serve in

  1382. that position.

  1383. Make sure,

  1384. Timothy and

  1385. church, that

  1386. their life is

  1387. squared up with

  1388. the gospel.

  1389. And it's the

  1390. church that will

  1391. do the work of

  1392. confirming those

  1393. young men for that

  1394. kind of leadership.

  1395. And so, the

  1396. beauty of the

  1397. church in that

  1398. role of raising

  1399. up godly leaders

1400. and doing it in a

  1401. way that shows

  1402. their confidence in

  1403. the Lord and

  1404. their patience in

  1405. the process.

  1406. All of this, of

  1407. course, is

  1408. possible because of

  1409. the work of

  1410. Christ.

  1411. We have a church

  1412. family.

  1413. We have church

  1414. leaders because of

  1415. what Christ

  1416. accomplished for us

  1417. on the cross

  1418. through his death

  1419. and through his

  1420. resurrection.

  1421. We're going to

  1422. transition now to

  1423. our time of

  1424. communion.

  1425. I'm going to

  1426. pray, invite the

  1427. men who are

  1428. helping to come

  1429. forward and

  1430. we'll observe

  1431. this time of

  1432. communion.

  1433. Father, thank

  1434. you for your

  1435. kindness to us

  1436. in giving us

  1437. spiritual leaders.

  1438. Thank you that

  1439. they do it

  1440. through the

  1441. instruction of the

  1442. word of God and

  1443. through the power

  1444. of the spirit of

  1445. God.

  1446. God, I pray

  1447. that as your

  1448. people, you would

  1449. help us to be

  1450. faithful in our

  1451. care for our

  1452. leaders.

  1453. I pray that we

  1454. would recognize

  1455. them as you have

  1456. called us to,

  1457. support them,

  1458. love them,

  1459. promote them,

  1460. and Lord, even

  1461. discipline them

  1462. when necessary.

  1463. And God, I pray

  1464. that you would

  1465. help this church

  1466. to grow in

  1467. likeness to

  1468. Jesus Christ.

  1469. That we would be

  1470. ever more

  1471. effective in the

  1472. gospel message that

  1473. you've called us to.

  1474. ever more

  1475. resembling the

  1476. perfections of

  1477. Christ in our

  1478. life.

  1479. Obedience and

  1480. submission to you.

  1481. Thank you for

  1482. sending your son

  1483. to begin that

  1484. work in us.

  1485. We pray in Jesus'

  1486. name.

  1487. Amen.
