  1. Open your Bibles, if you would, with me to 1 Timothy chapter 6.

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  2. We'll be finishing off our time this morning in this letter, as Paul kind of provides his concluding statements and his call to Timothy in terms of directives and how to lead and love this church.

  3. 1 Timothy chapter 6. If you're using your pew Bible, it's on page 993.

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  4. We're going to find in this passage two verses, one in verse 14 of chapter 6, which says,

  5. Keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach.

  6. That word for keep is the word for guard, to protect, to preserve.

  7. And then in verse 20, where he says, O Timothy, guard the good deposit.

  8. What do you think of when you hear about guarding, protecting information?

  9. What do you hear, what do you think about when you think about preserving the identity that you might have?

  10. Well, even this morning, as I was getting ready to print notes and to set up my computer,

  11. there was a verification process that happened in order to protect my identity.

  12. I'm on my computer and I'm logging into my email and I have to provide my password.

  13. And then the authentication notice that then comes to my phone.

  14. And I've got to give it the right number because that number comes up.

  15. I put the number in there and then I have to hit yes to say, yes, it's me.

  16. And then I have to use my fingerprint to make sure that yes, it's me is a really yes, it's me.

  17. And it's coming from the number that I got from a totally different device.

  18. All of the steps we go to protect identity, to protect information.

  19. I'm wondering at some point I might have to provide like a saliva sample or an eye retina scan or a DNA,

  20. you know, all of those things that may be coming at some time in the future.

  21. We understand something about protecting information, don't we?

  22. We recognize that software companies, they use these password protections.

  23. They use these multi-layered verification statements.

  24. Even Amazon, if you're logging into your Amazon account, it will send that notification to a different device.

  25. You have to say, yes, it's me.

  26. You can finally get in and order your stuff that you want to order.

  27. Museums keep valuable artifacts in that secure vault set away, set aside from the passer buyer to make sure that it is preserved.

  28. And so any of you who might go to like Washington, D.C., you're looking at those special, the Declaration of Independence or whatever it is,

  29. and it's under a certain glass and it's protected in a certain way.

  30. The lighting is just right.

  31. Or a researcher that's storing sensitive data on a secure server with limited access.

  32. And here we are, we're kind of moving into the holidays.

  33. And I know, I know some of you ladies have those special recipes that are protected.

  34. You know, they're passed down from one generation to the other,

  35. and you're not going to let anybody know that secret recipe if they want to know it

  36. or enjoy the benefits of that recipe that you have.

  37. They have to come over to your house.

  38. It's not going to be disseminated.

  39. Those kinds of things that we do to protect information.

  40. But here in this final bit of directives that the Apostle Paul is giving Timothy,

  41. he wants Timothy to preserve information, but not like the way we preserve our information.

  42. The way that Timothy is going to guard and protect this entrustment that he's been given,

  43. the way he's going to guard and keep the commandments is not to hold them to himself,

  44. but to disseminate them in a way that is consistent and clear and unadulterated and uncorrupted, undefiled.

  45. That message that he's going to continue to communicate and to help compete against

  46. and provide a contrast to that message that we've been hearing about all along in 1 Timothy,

  47. that false teaching, that different doctrine, those endless genealogies,

  48. those statements that lead to division.

  49. Timothy is going to help preserve the faith and preserve sound teaching by communicating the truth,

  50. not by holding it back, not by keeping it to himself.

  51. So as we come to this passage this morning,

  52. recognize that all of us, because of the word of God that we have,

  53. have the distinct privilege, along with Timothy, of guarding the deposit that we've been entrusted to,

  54. of keeping the commandments.

  55. And it doesn't mean keeping it to yourself.

  56. As a matter of fact, the best way for us to guard and to keep the commands is to share them,

  57. is to convey them from one generation to the next.

  58. To impart the gospel, the right words of God from the scriptures to the people that you love

  59. and to the people in your circles.

  60. Guard it by sharing it.

  61. And that's what we're going to see this morning.

  62. It's a struggle that Paul will describe throughout our text today.

  63. It's a struggle for faith.

  64. A struggle to ensure that this church that is the pillar and buttress of the truth,

  65. as he describes there in chapter 3,

  66. remains true to the scriptures that it's been entrusted with.

  67. So fight for faith.

  68. That's what we're going to see this morning in our time together.

  69. So if you're there, let me read for you verse 11 and 12,

  70. and we'll get started this morning.

  71. We're going to see, first of all, a fight for faith personally.

  72. Notice that as I read.

  73. As for you, O man of God, flee these things.

  74. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.

  75. Fight the good fight of faith.

  76. Take hold of eternal life to which you were called

  77. and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

  78. Timothy, fight the good fight of faith.

  79. And this is something that you need to do for yourself personally, individually.

  80. It begins with you.

  81. If you're ever going to fight this fight of faith,

  82. and it's going to do anybody any good,

  83. first of all, you need to know what the word of God is.

  84. You need to ensure that that word of God is transforming you

  85. and helping you to be a representative for that truth in a pure way.

  86. So fight for faith personally, Timothy.

  87. He begins with several instructions.

  88. We're going to find throughout our time this morning,

  89. this succession of imperatives,

  90. these commands that Paul will begin to just issue out to Timothy.

  91. These are the things I want you to do.

  92. These are the directives for your life.

  93. This is the way you're going to fight for the faith

  94. in your life and also in the lives of those that you are directed to lead.

  95. He begins with flee from spiritual danger.

  96. Flee from spiritual danger.

  97. That's our first command this morning.

  98. Flee these things, he says.

  99. With this opening phrase, Paul provides this sharp contrast.

  100. He uses this contrastive word, but,

  101. that helps draw out the difference between Timothy and these teachers

  102. that he's just spoken about in verses 2 to verse 10.

  103. This contrast that will shine its way through the life of Timothy

  104. and provide this set-apartness,

  105. this gospel life that's been transformed.

  106. Timothy, live this way, and you do this, first of all,

  107. by fleeing these things.

  108. He begins not only with this contrastive word,

  109. but also with this unique identity.

  110. Oh, man of God, he says.

  111. A title that only shows up twice in the New Testament,

  112. but a title that is used, this man of God,

  113. 68 times in the Old Testament.

  114. It's used as a title for Moses,

  115. for David, for the prophets,

  116. for Elijah, for Elisha.

  117. This man of God,

  118. which was this identity

  119. for men who represented the word of God.

  120. Not just men who were godly,

  121. but men who were men of God.

  122. They derived their identity,

  123. their mission,

  124. their purpose.

  125. They derived it from God himself.

  126. As men of God,

  127. they were on mission for God.

  128. They represented God.

  129. They spoke for God

  130. with the words of God.

  131. Timothy, you are such a man.

  132. You are a man of God.

  133. You derive your identity from him,

  134. your purpose from him.

  135. And as men and women of God,

  136. there are certain commitments.

  137. There are certain behaviors

  138. that will drive us,

  139. that will shape our lives.

  140. That is, they will help us

  141. to be the kind of person

  142. that will make us effective

  143. in this fight for the gospel.

  144. They will help to stabilize us

  145. and will help us represent

  146. this pure word of God

  147. that has been given to us.

  148. 2 Timothy 3, 16 and 17

  149. is the only other time

  150. in the New Testament

  151. where we see this phrase,

  152. man of God.

  153. All scripture is breathed out by God

  154. and is profitable

  155. for teaching,

  156. for reproof,

  157. for correction,

  158. and training in righteousness

  159. that the man of God

  160. may be complete,

  161. equipped for every good work.

  162. By the way,

  163. this is not just for men.

  164. This is for men and women.

  165. We can be men and women of God.

  166. We derive our purpose.

  167. We derive our mission.

  168. We derive our authority

  169. from God himself

  170. and his words.

  171. We represent him

  172. by speaking his words.

  173. And thus,

  174. by speaking God's words,

  175. we represent this pure gospel.

  176. If Timothy was to be faithful,

  177. a man of God,

  178. he needed to begin

  179. by fleeing these things.

  180. Flee is this present imperative,

  181. this command for the present day,

  182. but continuing on from day to day

  183. until he was to be with Jesus.

  184. This ever-present reality of Timothy,

  185. be a man who flees,

  186. who runs away,

  187. who escapes,

  188. who avoids danger.

  189. This word,

  190. to flee,

  191. is the word

  192. from which we get

  193. the word fugitive,

  194. this one who is running.

  195. Timothy,

  196. don't linger.

  197. Don't be complacent,

  198. but run away

  199. as fast as you can.

  200. Put as much distance

  201. between yourself

  202. and the danger

  203. that exists for you spiritually.

  204. Let running away

  205. from spiritual danger

  206. be this ongoing pattern

  207. of your life.

  208. Now,

  209. by the way,

  210. running from danger

  211. is not running

  212. from every danger

  213. because you can see

  214. from the Apostle Paul

  215. that at times

  216. he's running headlong

  217. into danger,

  218. that physical danger

  219. that he was willing

  220. to embrace

  221. for the sake of the gospel,

  222. but this spiritual danger

  223. that he avoided

  224. in his own life

  225. that would shipwreck his faith.

  226. That's what we're talking about.

  227. What are those

  228. specific things

  229. that the Apostle Paul

  230. is referring to?

  231. This word,

  232. these things,

  233. refers to

  234. those things

  235. that are represented

  236. in chapter 6,

  237. verses 3

  238. to verse 10.

  239. Those things

  240. that were in the way.

  241. Those things

  242. that represented

  243. the life and character

  244. of these false teachers.

  245. We saw in verse 3

  246. those words

  247. that don't agree

  248. with sound teaching.

  249. Avoid those things,

  250. Timothy.

  251. Steer clear

  252. of those words

  253. that don't represent

  254. Christ faithfully.

  255. In verse 4,

  256. steer clear

  257. from those

  258. who are proud

  259. and confused.

  260. Steer clear

  261. from their teaching

  262. that leaves

  263. a trail of controversy

  264. and quarreling

  265. and envy

  266. and dissension

  267. and slander

  268. and constant friction

  269. among the brothers.

  270. Steer clear

  271. of those things,

  272. Timothy,

  273. those spiritual dangers.

  274. In verse 5,

  275. steer clear

  276. of those

  277. who are preoccupied

  278. with financial gain.

  279. That they're identifying

  280. the things

  281. that are truly

  282. in their heart.

  283. What their motivations are.

  284. What their affections are.

  285. Verse 6,

  286. steer clear

  287. of those who have

  288. no concept

  289. of contentment.

  290. They haven't learned

  291. that godliness

  292. with contentment

  293. is great gain.

  294. In verse 9,

  295. steer clear

  296. of those

  297. who fall

  298. into temptation

  299. and lead others

  300. into temptation

  301. as well.

  302. In verse 10,

  303. steer clear

  304. of those

  305. who have wandered

  306. away from the faith.

  307. Timothy,

  308. steer clear

  309. of danger.

  310. Steer clear

  311. of the spiritual

  312. danger

  313. that will shipwreck

  314. your own soul

  315. and will lead

  316. to a fight

  317. that is not

  318. a fight

  319. for the gospel.

  320. Fight the fight

  321. of faith

  322. by running away.

  323. So,

  324. if you're going to

  325. fight this fight

  326. of faith,

  327. run from spiritual

  328. dangers,

  329. Timothy.

  330. Identify them.

  331. Separate yourself

  332. from them.

  333. Abandon yourself

  334. like a refugee

  335. from those things

  336. that will trip you up

  337. and to catch you up

  338. away from God.

  339. But your running,

  340. Timothy,

  341. is not an aimless running.

  342. It's a purposeful running.

  343. And that's where we come

  344. to the second command.

  345. So,

  346. flee from spiritual danger

  347. but pursue spiritual life.

  348. Pursue spiritual life.

  349. And that's where he goes next.

  350. Pursue righteousness,

  351. godliness,

  352. faith,

  353. love,

  354. steadfastness,

  355. and gentleness.

  356. Again,

  357. this word pursue

  358. is this present imperative,

  359. this command

  360. for the everyday.

  361. day.

  362. It's a repeated command

  363. that Paul will even

  364. share with Timothy

  365. in his second letter,

  366. 2 Timothy 2.22.

  367. He says much the same thing.

  368. So flee

  369. youthful passions

  370. and pursue

  371. righteousness,

  372. faith,

  373. love,

  374. and peace

  375. along with those

  376. who call on the Lord

  377. from a pure heart.

  378. youths

  379. repeated statements

  380. to flee

  381. and pursue

  382. helps us to understand

  383. the purposefulness

  384. of our running.

  385. Not just running away

  386. from spiritual danger

  387. but running

  388. to the only source

  389. of security.

  390. Running to God

  391. himself.

  392. In God's economy,

  393. there is only

  394. one road.

  395. And that road

  396. only has

  397. two directions.

  398. A direction

  399. to God

  400. and a direction

  401. away from God.

  402. Where are you

  403. on that road?

  404. Are you

  405. on the road

  406. that is fleeing

  407. spiritual danger

  408. and pursuing

  409. spiritual life?

  410. Are you

  411. chasing the things

  412. that are going to

  413. help build you

  414. up in spiritual

  415. things?

  416. The kinds of things

  417. that will

  418. demonstrate

  419. the work

  420. of the gospel

  421. in your life?

  422. These things

  423. that he points to.

  424. Righteousness,

  425. godliness,

  426. faith,

  427. love,

  428. steadfastness,

  429. and gentleness.

  430. The consistent

  431. theme throughout

  432. the New Testament

  433. is that you can't

  434. just leave a vacuum.

  435. You can't just say

  436. I'm going to stop

  437. doing bad things.

  438. That the vacuum

  439. in that empty space

  440. just exposes you

  441. to more danger.

  442. Rather,

  443. you replace

  444. the emptiness

  445. in your life,

  446. the resistance

  447. or reluctance

  448. to sin,

  449. you replace

  450. with righteousness.

  451. You replace

  452. with holiness.

  453. You replace

  454. with activity

  455. that helps

  456. lead you to God.

  457. Ephesians 4,

  458. 22-24,

  459. in Paul's letter

  460. to the church

  461. of Ephesus,

  462. he writes this,

  463. put off

  464. your old self

  465. which belongs

  466. to your former

  467. manner of life

  468. and is corrupt

  469. through deceitful

  470. desires,

  471. and be renewed

  472. in the spirit

  473. of your mind

  474. and to put on

  475. the new self,

  476. created after

  477. the likeness

  478. of God

  479. in true

  480. righteousness

  481. righteousness

  482. in holiness.

  483. Timothy,

  484. show that there

  485. is a work

  486. of God

  487. in your life.

  488. Show the gospel

  489. has changed you

  490. from the inside out.

  491. This work

  492. of righteousness

  493. and godliness

  494. are two statements

  495. that help to

  496. demonstrate

  497. that very point.

  498. The godliness

  499. that's happening

  500. and shaping you

  501. on the inside

  502. and showing up

  503. through righteousness

  504. on the outside.

  505. Make sure,

  506. Timothy,

  507. that you're living

  508. your life

  509. in such a way

  510. that God has placed.

  511. Make sure

  512. that your motivations,

  513. make sure

  514. that your pursuits

  515. are things

  516. that represent

  517. a life

  518. that is motivated

  519. by God.

  520. This work

  521. of faith

  522. and love,

  523. the second pair

  524. of words

  525. that kind of

  526. come together,

  527. this natural

  528. outflow

  529. of godliness

  530. that pours out

  531. in our responses

  532. to others.

  533. Not only

  534. in our response

  535. to God

  536. and how we

  537. live for Him,

  538. but now

  539. how that life

  540. shows up

  541. on the outside

  542. to others.

  543. This work

  544. of faith

  545. and trusting

  546. God

  547. for everything,

  548. which we'll see

  549. as we continue

  550. along in

  551. this passage.

  552. A work

  553. of faith

  554. that helps

  555. to secure

  556. Timothy's obedience.

  557. I trust

  558. that God's

  559. work

  560. and will

  561. for me

  562. is better.

  563. That I can

  564. grab hold

  565. of the pleasures

  566. of this life

  567. on my own

  568. or I can trust

  569. God

  570. to give me

  571. those good things

  572. in His good time

  573. and in the way

  574. that He has

  575. prescribed

  576. through His word.

  577. I'm going

  578. to trust Him.

  579. Not to fill out

  580. my fleshly pursuits

  581. on my own,

  582. but to wait

  583. patiently

  584. for God

  585. to answer

  586. the deepest

  587. needs of my heart

  588. and to do it

  589. in a way

  590. that represents

  591. my faith in Him.

  592. And love,

  593. this word for love

  594. is a love

  595. of volition

  596. and choice.

  597. It's a love

  598. of decision.

  599. This volition

  600. and that love

  601. that's voluntary,

  602. choosing to love.

  603. You will be marked

  604. by an affection

  605. for God's people.

  606. One who loves

  607. the Lord their God

  608. with all their heart,

  609. soul,

  610. mind,

  611. and strength

  612. and loves their neighbor

  613. as themselves.

  614. That two-dimensional

  615. kind of love

  616. that is not only

  617. love for God

  618. but expresses itself

  619. in love

  620. for people.

  621. Timothy,

  622. demonstrate

  623. that the work

  624. of faith

  625. in your life

  626. has changed you

  627. from the inside out.

  628. This steadfastness

  629. and this gentleness,

  630. there's a perseverance

  631. about you.

  632. There's a willingness

  633. to go the distance

  634. and a gentleness here.

  635. This word for gentleness

  636. is a rare word

  637. in the New Testament

  638. and it's a word

  639. of the normal word

  640. for gentle

  641. coupled with the word

  642. for suffering.

  643. It's gentleness

  644. in the midst

  645. of hard things.

  646. I don't know,

  647. have you found

  648. as I have

  649. in my life

  650. that when the pressure

  651. is pressing in,

  652. when my day is long,

  653. when I'm feeling raw

  654. and I'm feeling like

  655. I'm missing out

  656. on sleep,

  657. those are the times

  658. where I'm most vulnerable

  659. and most agitated

  660. and least gentle.

  661. You find yourself to be,

  662. is that true

  663. about yourself?

  664. There's something

  665. about the gospel

  666. that shapes

  667. the way we live.

  668. especially in the moments

  669. where we're most vulnerable.

  670. There's a gentleness

  671. about you,

  672. Timothy.

  673. There's a sweetness

  674. about you.

  675. There's a change,

  676. the fruit of the Spirit

  677. that is working

  678. in your life,

  679. love, joy, peace,

  680. patience, kindness,

  681. goodness, faithfulness,

  682. gentleness

  683. in self-control.

  684. God is helping

  685. to show up

  686. in your life

  687. and so the faith

  688. of your life

  689. is showing through

  690. in how you live.

  691. recognize,

  692. though,

  693. that this is not

  694. going to be easy.

  695. Fleeing from

  696. spiritual danger

  697. and pursuing

  698. spiritual life

  699. is not going to be

  700. an easy thing.

  701. So,

  702. that's why he gives

  703. this next command

  704. that we find

  705. in verse 12.

  706. Fight the good fight

  707. of faith.

  708. Fight the good fight

  709. of faith.

  710. He says,

  711. take hold

  712. of eternal life

  713. to which you were called

  714. and about which

  715. you made

  716. the good confession

  717. in the presence

  718. of many witnesses.

  719. This word for fight,

  720. again,

  721. is a present imperative.

  722. It's the third one

  723. in line.

  724. This competition,

  725. this fight,

  726. this struggle.

  727. The Greek word

  728. is agonizomai.

  729. Do you hear the word

  730. agony in there?

  731. This is a verb

  732. that describes

  733. fighting.

  734. This military

  735. or athletic

  736. kind of word

  737. that's used

  738. in those two areas.

  739. The concentration

  740. and discipline

  741. and conviction

  742. that's required

  743. in that kind of struggle

  744. that grits it out

  745. when things are hard.

  746. Faith

  747. has been a major theme

  748. throughout the

  749. letter of Timothy.

  750. It's used 21 times

  751. from start to finish.

  752. And if you add the verb,

  753. so the noun

  754. for faith

  755. and then coupled

  756. with the verbs

  757. for faith,

  758. which is the word

  759. to believe,

  760. it's used 29 times

  761. throughout this letter.

  762. Right at the outset,

  763. Paul describes Timothy

  764. as his true son

  765. in the faith.

  766. Recognize Timothy

  767. as a man of faith,

  768. as a man of God.

  769. Faith needs to show up

  770. in your life

  771. and it's a battle.

  772. You must struggle

  773. for faith

  774. so that it's a reality

  775. in your life.

  776. And he charges Timothy

  777. to confront

  778. the false teachers

  779. that promote speculation

  780. instead of the stewardship

  781. from God

  782. that is by faith

  783. there in chapter 1,

  784. verse 5.

  785. Paul goes on

  786. to describe

  787. his own experience

  788. of faith

  789. later on

  790. in chapter 1,

  791. verse 14.

  792. He says,

  793. And then,

  794. of Timothy's responsibility,

  795. he says in verse 19,

  796. Hold faith

  797. and a good conscience.

  798. And if you don't,

  799. here's the consequences.

  800. By rejecting this,

  801. some have made

  802. a shipwreck

  803. of their faith.

  804. So,

  805. this ministry,

  806. Timothy,

  807. must be marked

  808. by faith.

  809. both personally

  810. and in how

  811. you communicate

  812. faith to others.

  813. As we find

  814. in chapter 4,

  815. verse 6,

  816. he says,

  817. If you put

  818. these things

  819. before the brothers,

  820. you will be

  821. a good servant

  822. of Christ Jesus

  823. being trained,

  824. listen,

  825. in the words

  826. of faith

  827. and the good doctrine

  828. that you have followed.

  829. Fight the good fight

  830. of faith.

  831. It is a good fight.

  832. Not an arbitrary fight

  833. but a fight

  834. that is oriented

  835. around good things.

  836. The good things

  837. of the gospel.

  838. Faith that leads

  839. to God.

  840. That's where

  841. true goodness

  842. comes from.

  843. That's where

  844. true godliness

  845. comes from.

  846. Have the kind

  847. of faith

  848. that points

  849. people to God.

  850. Faith that refers

  851. to this body

  852. of Christian truth.

  853. The contents

  854. of the word of God.

  855. Recognize,

  856. Timothy.

  857. All that,

  858. the instruction

  859. that's in the word

  860. and how that will help

  861. to undergird

  862. faith.

  863. And if you do this well,

  864. Timothy,

  865. Paul says

  866. in 2 Timothy 4

    2 Timothy 4:7

  867. verses 7 and 8,

  868. I have fought

  869. the good fight.

  870. I have finished

  871. the race.

  872. I have kept

  873. the faith.

  874. Henceforth,

  875. there is laid up

  876. for me the crown

  877. of righteousness

  878. which the Lord,

  879. the righteous judge,

  880. will award to me

  881. on that day

  882. and not only to me

  883. but also to all

  884. who have loved

  885. his appearing.

  886. There is a reward

  887. for fighting

  888. the good fight

  889. of faith

  890. and that reward

  891. of course

  892. is this future joy

  893. we'll experience

  894. with God himself

  895. in glory.

  896. When that fight

  897. seems more

  898. than you can bear,

  899. then Timothy,

  900. do this next thing,

  901. live for eternity.

  902. We see that in verse 12.

  903. Live for eternity.

  904. Really,

  905. I'm taking the phrase,

  906. take hold

  907. of eternal life

  908. and summarizing that

  909. as live for eternity.

  910. This word,

  911. take hold,

  912. is another imperative,

  913. another command.

  914. Understand the destination,

  915. Timothy.

  916. Understand the whole purpose

  917. for which you exist.

  918. Take hold

  919. of this eternal life.

  920. Don't live

  921. for the here and now,

  922. Timothy.

  923. Live for what is coming

  924. or understand

  925. the accountability

  926. of the God

  927. that you serve.

  928. Understand the great mission

  929. that you've been set for.

  930. Recognize the idea

  931. of the identity

  932. that he's given to you.

  933. There is this new reality,

  934. this new objective,

  935. this new destination,

  936. Timothy.

  937. Keep that in mind.

  938. Keep that in view.

  939. He admonishes Timothy

  940. to get a grip.

  941. Take hold.

  942. Hang on, Timothy.

  943. Don't lose your grip.

  944. And then he reminds him

  945. of this holding on

  946. which happens

  947. because he was called

  948. to this.

  949. This work of God

  950. in his life.

  951. You were called

  952. to this,

  953. Timothy.

  954. Recognize the grace

  955. of God

  956. in calling you

  957. to himself.

  958. He's the one

  959. who drew you.

  960. Remember him.

  961. Press on.

  962. And then also remember

  963. the future joy

  964. of what you have

  965. to anticipate

  966. and look forward to.

  967. Take hold

  968. of eternal life.

  969. Don't live for the moment.

  970. Live for the eternity.

  971. And remember,

  972. Timothy,

  973. that this good confession.

  974. You've been called

  975. by God

  976. and remember

  977. that good confession

  978. that you had.

  979. That confession

  980. in the presence

  981. of many witnesses.

  982. I imagine

  983. that what Paul

  984. is referring to

  985. is that

  986. that moment

  987. where Timothy

  988. was publicly

  989. confessing his faith

  990. before his home church

  991. perhaps.

  992. Maybe it was

  993. the day

  994. that he got baptized.

  995. We don't know

  996. for sure

  997. but that good confession.

  998. And those of you

  999. who have come

  1000. to faith in Christ,

  1001. I wonder

  1002. perhaps for you

  1003. if you can remember

  1004. the experience

  1005. of the moment

  1006. where you came

  1007. to Christ yourself.

  1008. For me,

1009. it was when I was

  1010. five years old.

  1011. And even as a

  1012. five year old,

  1013. I can appreciate

  1014. in my own

  1015. innocent little way

  1016. the sin

  1017. that I brought

  1018. to the table

  1019. and the great

  1020. mercy of God

  1021. in drawing me

  1022. to himself,

  1023. forgiving me

  1024. of sin

  1025. and making me

  1026. his own.

  1027. Maybe there were

  1028. experiences

  1029. or even feelings

  1030. that you have

  1031. that maybe burdens

  1032. that were lifted

  1033. and maybe even

  1034. the presence

  1035. of God

  1036. in your life.

  1037. I think

  1038. that Paul

  1039. may be referring

  1040. to this good confession.

  1041. Remember how fresh

  1042. and new

  1043. it seemed.

  1044. Remember how excited

  1045. you were

  1046. that great

  1047. and good

  1048. confession

  1049. that you had

  1050. publicly.

  1051. Don't let

  1052. that disappear.

  1053. Know what

  1054. that purchased

  1055. for you,

  1056. this future

  1057. in heaven.

  1058. Don't allow

  1059. the hardships

  1060. that you're going

  1061. through

  1062. to erase

  1063. your memory

  1064. of that good

  1065. day,

  1066. that good

  1067. confession

  1068. where you've

  1069. been called

  1070. to be his own.

  1071. In verse 13,

  1072. the apostle Paul

  1073. moves,

  1074. remember your

  1075. ultimate motivation.

  1076. Remember your

  1077. ultimate motivation,

  1078. he says.

  1079. In verse 13,

  1080. I charge you

  1081. in the presence

  1082. of God

  1083. who gives life

  1084. to all things

  1085. and of Christ Jesus

  1086. who in his testimony

  1087. before Pontius Pilate

  1088. made the good

  1089. confession

  1090. to keep the commandments

  1091. !

  1092. The commandments

  1093. unstained and free

  1094. from reproach

  1095. until the appearing

1096. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  1097. which he will

  1098. display at the

  1099. proper time.

  1100. He who is blessed

  1101. and only sovereign,

  1102. the King of kings

  1103. and Lord of lords

  1104. who alone

  1105. has immortality,

  1106. who dwells

  1107. in unapproachable light,

  1108. whom no one

  1109. has ever seen

  1110. or can see.

  1111. To him be glory

  1112. and eternal dominion.

  1113. Amen.

  1114. Timothy,

  1115. keep the commandments.

  1116. Why?

  1117. You're keeping

  1118. these commandments

  1119. because you know

1120. who you are living for.

  1121. I'm charging you

  1122. in the presence

  1123. of God.

  1124. Recognize that you live

  1125. in the presence

  1126. of God himself.

  1127. God is not distant,

  1128. Timothy.

  1129. God is present.

  1130. God is active.

  1131. God is near.

  1132. God is accessible.

  1133. He's not far away.

  1134. He is present

  1135. with you.

  1136. Not like the

  1137. old song

  1138. from the 1990s,

  1139. Bette Midler.

  1140. Maybe you have heard

  1141. this song or not.

  1142. From a distance,

  1143. God is watching us

  1144. from a distance.

  1145. Ever heard that song?

  1146. Well, that's not

  1147. the kind of God

  1148. of the Bible.

1149. The God of the Bible

  1150. is a present God.

1151. The God of the Bible

  1152. is a near God.

1153. The God of the Bible

  1154. is an engaged God.

  1155. He's not a distant God.

  1156. And so,

  1157. Timothy,

  1158. keep it in mind

1159. that God is near you.

  1160. He's present with you.

  1161. And that should change

  1162. everything about

  1163. how you live.

  1164. Towards the end

  1165. of Paul's

  1166. second letter

  1167. to Timothy,

  1168. he repeats

  1169. this similar statement

  1170. in 2 Timothy 4,

    2 Timothy 4:1

  1171. verses 1 and 2,

  1172. he says this,

  1173. I charge you

  1174. in the presence

  1175. of God

  1176. and of Christ Jesus,

  1177. who is the judge

  1178. of the living

  1179. and the dead

  1180. and by his appearing

  1181. and his kingdom

  1182. preach the word.

  1183. Be ready

  1184. in season

  1185. and out of season.

  1186. Reprove,

  1187. rebuke,

  1188. exhort

  1189. with complete

  1190. patience

  1191. and teaching.

  1192. You see,

  1193. Timothy,

  1194. if you understand

  1195. that God is there,

  1196. you understand

  1197. that the work

  1198. that you do

  1199. does not depend

  1200. on you,

  1201. it depends on God.

  1202. And if you understand

  1203. that God is there,

  1204. Timothy,

  1205. you know that

  1206. whatever circumstances

  1207. that you're going through

  1208. are circumstances

  1209. that God is allowed

  1210. to happen

  1211. because of

  1212. his sovereignty.

  1213. His presence

  1214. is there,

  1215. his power

  1216. is represented,

  1217. you can trust him

  1218. just like Jesus

  1219. trusted the Father

  1220. by giving the good

  1221. confession

  1222. in the presence

  1223. of Pontius Pilate.

  1224. In the moment

  1225. where from a human

  1226. standpoint,

  1227. life hung

  1228. in the balance,

  1229. where Jesus

  1230. was giving testimony

  1231. before an earthly

  1232. judge,

  1233. Pilate,

  1234. who had the

  1235. sentence of death

  1236. or life

  1237. and Jesus

  1238. was faithful

  1239. and true

  1240. to God himself.

  1241. He entrusted

  1242. himself

  1243. to him

  1244. who judges

  1245. justly,

  1246. not Pilate,

  1247. but God.

  1248. Jesus gave

  1249. the good confession.

  1250. We find from

  1251. John chapter 18,

    John 18 chapter mention

  1252. 37,

  1253. Pilate asks

  1254. Jesus,

  1255. so,

  1256. are you a king?

  1257. Jesus answered,

  1258. you say that I'm a king.

  1259. For this purpose

  1260. I was born

  1261. and for this purpose

  1262. I have come

  1263. into the world

  1264. to bear witness

  1265. to the truth.

  1266. Everyone who is

  1267. of the truth

  1268. listens to

  1269. my voice.

  1270. Jesus kept

  1271. the commandments.

  1272. Jesus spoke

  1273. the truth.

  1274. Jesus gave

  1275. the good confession.

  1276. Jesus,

  1277. of course,

  1278. was the man

  1279. of God.

  1280. Keep Jesus

  1281. in view,

  1282. Timothy.

  1283. Don't lose

  1284. sight of his presence.

  1285. Recognize

  1286. that he's there.

  1287. Trust him.

  1288. So keep

  1289. those commandments,

  1290. Timothy.

  1291. Do it faithfully.

  1292. Trust the word

  1293. of God.

  1294. Be faithful

  1295. to the calling

  1296. that you've been given

  1297. and do it

  1298. in a way

  1299. that's unstained,

  1300. that's spotless,

  1301. without defect.

1302. Do it in a way

  1303. that's untarnished

  1304. so you can

  1305. communicate

  1306. the commandments

  1307. and the gospel

  1308. purely

  1309. and well.

  1310. Preserve

  1311. the gospel

  1312. through your life

  1313. and through

  1314. your witness.

  1315. Timothy,

  1316. keep it pure

  1317. because God

  1318. is pure

  1319. and thus

  1320. his word

  1321. is pure.

  1322. And what will

  1323. help Timothy

  1324. as he's engaged

  1325. in the various

  1326. situations,

  1327. this doxology

  1328. that we find here

  1329. towards the end

  1330. of verse 15,

  1331. he who is blessed

  1332. and only sovereign,

  1333. the king of kings,

  1334. the lord of lords,

  1335. who alone

  1336. has immortality,

  1337. who dwells

  1338. in unapproachable light,

  1339. whom no one

  1340. has ever seen

  1341. or can see,

  1342. to him be honor

  1343. and eternal dominion.

  1344. Amen.

  1345. Timothy,

  1346. if you remember

1347. and you set your sights

  1348. on God,

  1349. you'll remember

  1350. who is really

  1351. in control.

  1352. He is the blessed

  1353. and only sovereign God.

1354. He is the king of kings

  1355. and lord of lords,

  1356. which means

1357. no one can do anything

  1358. outside of his permission.

  1359. He is in control.

  1360. You can trust him,

  1361. Timothy.

  1362. He alone dwells

  1363. with immortality.

  1364. He alone is eternal.

1365. He is the unchanging God.

  1366. You can trust him.

  1367. He's been in existence

  1368. for all of time.

  1369. He dwells

  1370. in unapproachable light

1371. whom no eye has seen.

  1372. God is preeminent.

  1373. He is ultimate.

  1374. He is supreme.

  1375. Timothy,

  1376. you can trust him.

  1377. And everything you do

  1378. is meant

  1379. to bring him honor

  1380. and glory

  1381. because he exists

  1382. in eternal dominion.

  1383. So, Timothy,

  1384. fight the good fight

  1385. of faith

  1386. for yourself personally.

  1387. And then,

  1388. the apostle Paul

  1389. turns in verses 17 to 19

  1390. to now distribute

  1391. this responsibility.

  1392. Now, Timothy,

  1393. you have a responsibility

  1394. for yourself,

  1395. but you also have

  1396. a responsibility

  1397. for others.

  1398. Fight for faith

  1399. in others too,

  1400. Timothy.

1401. He says in verse 17,

  1402. As for the rich

  1403. in this present age,

  1404. charge them

  1405. not to be haughty,

1406. nor to set their hopes

  1407. on the uncertainty

  1408. of riches,

  1409. but on God,

  1410. who richly provides us

  1411. with everything to enjoy.

1412. They are to do good,

1413. to be rich in good works,

  1414. to be generous

  1415. and ready to share.

  1416. Thus,

  1417. storing up treasure

  1418. for themselves

  1419. as a good foundation

  1420. for the future

  1421. so that they may

  1422. take hold of that

  1423. which is truly life.

  1424. Timothy,

1425. help those who are wealthy

  1426. to set their hope

  1427. on God.

  1428. Help the wealthy

  1429. to set their hope

  1430. on God.

  1431. This should sound

  1432. really familiar,

  1433. by the way.

  1434. The apostle Paul

  1435. has just encouraged

1436. Timothy in the same way.

  1437. So,

  1438. now it's transferable

  1439. what Timothy

  1440. is incorporating

  1441. into his own life

  1442. in helping him

1443. fight the fight of faith.

  1444. He is now encouraging

  1445. those who are rich

  1446. to do the same.

  1447. Keep God in focus.

  1448. Understand the purpose

  1449. for your riches

  1450. in laying up treasures

  1451. in heaven,

  1452. in establishing

  1453. and amplifying

  1454. the witness

  1455. that you have

  1456. in depending on God.

  1457. Not setting your hopes

  1458. on the uncertainty

  1459. of riches,

  1460. but setting your hopes

  1461. on the certainty

  1462. of God.

  1463. Trusting in him

  1464. because he's the one

  1465. who provides richly.

  1466. Paul wants Timothy

  1467. to understand

1468. that those who are wealthy

  1469. have an obligation.

  1470. They have an obligation

  1471. to demonstrate

  1472. their confidence

  1473. in God.

  1474. And I want you

  1475. to understand

  1476. that those of us

  1477. in this room,

  1478. those of us living

  1479. in America,

  1480. are in the top

  1481. 80% of the wealthiest

  1482. of the wealthy

  1483. in the world.

1484. So every one of us,

  1485. regardless of your station

  1486. in life

  1487. and regardless

  1488. of the occupation

  1489. that you have,

1490. this text applies to us.

  1491. And it's not that

  1492. we can't have wealth,

1493. but it's that we use

1494. our wealth in a way

  1495. that shows our confidence

  1496. in God.

  1497. We're setting our hopes

  1498. on him.

  1499. We're using our wealth

  1500. in a way

  1501. that demonstrates

  1502. that we believe

1503. that God is the one

  1504. who provides

  1505. for our needs,

  1506. not ourselves.

  1507. Paul ends this letter

  1508. where he began.

  1509. 1 Timothy 1, verse 1,

    1 Timothy 1:1

  1510. says,

1511. Paul, an apostle of Christ,

  1512. Jesus,

1513. by the command of God,

  1514. our Savior,

  1515. and of Christ,

  1516. Jesus,

  1517. our hope.

  1518. Timothy,

1519. help those who are wealthy

  1520. to set their hope

  1521. on God,

1522. not to set their hope

  1523. on the things

  1524. of this life.

  1525. Charge them,

  1526. Timothy,

  1527. command them,

  1528. and come beside

  1529. the most vulnerable.

  1530. And we've seen

  1531. Paul describe

  1532. the vulnerability

  1533. of wealth

  1534. in the previous section

  1535. in verses 6 to 10.

  1536. He talks about

  1537. godliness with contentment

  1538. as great gain.

  1539. He talks about

1540. the fact that we brought

  1541. nothing into the world.

1542. We're not going to take

1543. anything out of the world.

1544. He says in verse 9,

  1545. those who desire

  1546. to be rich

  1547. will fall into temptation.

  1548. We open ourselves up

  1549. to the temptations

  1550. of this world

  1551. being driven away

  1552. and walking

  1553. the wrong direction

  1554. on the path

  1555. instead of walking

  1556. to God,

  1557. walking away from God.

  1558. He talks about

  1559. the fact that

  1560. the rich fall

  1561. into temptation

  1562. and a snare

  1563. into senseless

  1564. and harmful desires.

  1565. This love of money,

  1566. this affection,

  1567. if it drives us

  1568. and consumes us,

  1569. is a love

  1570. that takes us

  1571. away from God.

  1572. The love of money

  1573. is the root

1574. of all kinds of evil.

  1575. It is through

  1576. this craving,

1577. he says in verse 10,

  1578. that some

  1579. have wandered

  1580. from the faith.

  1581. Don't be,

  1582. don't allow your wealth

  1583. to steer you

  1584. away from God.

  1585. Don't allow

  1586. your wealth,

  1587. it inclines

  1588. the wealthy,

  1589. it says,

  1590. to do two things.

  1591. First,

  1592. to be haughty

  1593. and then

  1594. to be self-sufficient.

  1595. Don't allow

  1596. your wealth

  1597. to do those things

  1598. for you,

  1599. Timothy.

  1600. Don't let wealth

  1601. make you feel

  1602. like you're better

  1603. than the people

  1604. around you.

  1605. Instruct the wealthy

  1606. to be humble,

  1607. not to be haughty.

  1608. And instruct

  1609. the wealthy

  1610. not to be self-sufficient,

  1611. but to be dependent.

  1612. You see,

  1613. those who are wealthy,

  1614. those who,

  1615. who are consumed

  1616. with accumulating more,

  1617. they fall into

  1618. various dangers

  1619. where they might say,

  1620. I can take care

  1621. of this myself.

  1622. Or,

  1623. I can save enough

  1624. and be okay

  1625. for the future.

  1626. Or,

  1627. I can be comfortable

  1628. and I can predict

  1629. and ensure

  1630. that the future

  1631. is certain.

  1632. Those are the dangers.

  1633. The dangers

  1634. of self-sufficiency

  1635. rather than

  1636. the life

  1637. and hope

  1638. on God.

  1639. So don't set

  1640. your hope

  1641. on riches,

  1642. Timothy.

  1643. Help them understand

  1644. the significance

  1645. of a life

  1646. that is resting

  1647. on God himself.

  1648. As Jesus said

1649. to the rich young ruler

  1650. in Luke 18,

  1651. 24 and 25,

  1652. spelling out again

  1653. the dangers

  1654. of wealth,

  1655. he says,

  1656. Jesus,

  1657. seeing that he

  1658. had become sad,

  1659. speaking of the

  1660. rich young ruler,

  1661. said,

  1662. how difficult

  1663. is it

  1664. for those

  1665. who have wealth

  1666. to enter

  1667. the kingdom

  1668. of God.

  1669. For it is easier

  1670. for a camel

  1671. to go through

  1672. the eye

  1673. of a needle

  1674. than for a rich

  1675. person to enter

  1676. the kingdom

  1677. of God.

  1678. Remember,

  1679. help them remember

  1680. that it is God

  1681. who provides

  1682. for their enjoyment.

  1683. He is the one

  1684. they should be

  1685. looking to

  1686. to fill out

  1687. the deepest needs

  1688. that they have.

  1689. So,

  1690. help them

  1691. to be those

  1692. who are

  1693. setting their

  1694. hope on God

  1695. and help them

  1696. to be rich

  1697. in good works.

  1698. To be rich

  1699. in good works.

  1700. Again,

  1701. this putting off

  1702. and putting on

  1703. that the Apostle Paul

  1704. is so faithful

  1705. to give

  1706. this practical

  1707. instruction.

  1708. And in verses

  1709. 18 and 19,

  1710. he gives a series

  1711. of verbs

  1712. to give

  1713. to these wealthy

  1714. individuals

  1715. to know how

  1716. to safeguard

  1717. their own faith

  1718. and to help

  1719. live in a way

  1720. that's consistent

  1721. with the gospel.

  1722. Notice,

1723. they are to do good,

  1724. to be rich

  1725. in good works,

  1726. to be generous

  1727. and ready to share,

  1728. thus storing up

  1729. treasure for themselves

  1730. as a good foundation

  1731. for the future

  1732. so that they may

  1733. hold,

  1734. take hold

  1735. of that

  1736. which is truly

  1737. life.

  1738. Make sure

  1739. they're doing good.

  1740. Make sure

  1741. they're rich

  1742. in good works.

  1743. Make sure

  1744. they're generous.

  1745. Make sure

  1746. they're willing

  1747. and able

  1748. to share.

  1749. Timothy,

  1750. encourage

  1751. the church

  1752. to live out

  1753. the gospel

  1754. by showing

  1755. their dependence

  1756. on God

  1757. and help

  1758. them to understand

  1759. that the resources

  1760. that they've been given

  1761. are resources

  1762. that now they're

  1763. entrusted to share,

  1764. that there's a stewardship

  1765. that's now

  1766. that they're responsible

  1767. to carry out

  1768. and in their stewardship

  1769. of giving

  1770. in the here

  1771. and now.

  1772. They are

  1773. laying up

  1774. treasure

  1775. for the future.

  1776. Notice,

  1777. they're storing

  1778. up treasure

  1779. that it's not,

  1780. help them to understand

  1781. the perspective

  1782. that it's not

  1783. that they're

  1784. letting go

  1785. of their stuff

  1786. but they're

  1787. laying up

  1788. treasure

  1789. for themselves

  1790. in heaven.

  1791. They're demonstrating

  1792. where their true

  1793. joy is,

  1794. their true

  1795. certainty

  1796. and hope is.

  1797. Help them

  1798. to take hold

  1799. of that

  1800. which is true life.

  1801. this word

  1802. for taking hold

  1803. is the same word

  1804. that Paul gave

  1805. to Timothy

  1806. in verse 12.

  1807. The same word

  1808. to embrace

  1809. and to understand

  1810. what they're really

  1811. living for.

  1812. Take hold

  1813. of life,

  1814. eternal life.

  1815. And then finally,

  1816. the apostle Paul

  1817. will give some

  1818. instruction to Timothy

  1819. in helping to lead

  1820. this church

  1821. generally

  1822. in verses 20 and 21

  1823. where he says,

  1824. fight for faith

  1825. in preserving

  1826. the message.

  1827. Fight for faith

  1828. in preserving

  1829. the message.

  1830. He says,

  1831. O Timothy,

  1832. guard the deposit

  1833. that's entrusted

  1834. to you.

  1835. Avoid

  1836. the irreverent

  1837. babble

  1838. in contradictions

  1839. of what is falsely

  1840. called knowledge

  1841. for by professing

  1842. it

  1843. some have

  1844. swerved

  1845. from the faith.

  1846. Grace

  1847. be with you.

  1848. Paul summarizes

  1849. this entire letter

  1850. in these two verses

  1851. where he wants Timothy

  1852. to recognize

  1853. his responsibility.

  1854. He has a responsibility

  1855. not only

  1856. to represent

  1857. the truth

  1858. and to

  1859. be transformed

  1860. by the truth

  1861. but to protect

  1862. the truth

  1863. by sharing

  1864. the truth

  1865. in a way

  1866. that is unadulterated,

  1867. that is pure,

  1868. that is dependable,

  1869. that is accurate,

  1870. full of integrity.

  1871. Timothy,

  1872. guard this

  1873. good

  1874. entrustment

  1875. this word

  1876. for deposit

  1877. is a banking term

  1878. that demotes

  1879. a sum

  1880. that's deposited,

  1881. this large sum

  1882. that's been

  1883. distributed

  1884. and of course

  1885. we understand

  1886. the value

  1887. of the gospel

  1888. that we've been given,

  1889. this good deposit

  1890. of the word

  1891. of God

  1892. that we enjoy

  1893. and we hold

  1894. in our hands,

  1895. this entrustment

  1896. that's been given,

  1897. this valuable property

  1898. for safe keeping.

  1899. Make sure,

  1900. Timothy,

  1901. that you are

  1902. guarding

  1903. this good deposit.

  1904. Make sure

  1905. that you are

  1906. communicating

  1907. the gospel

  1908. in a way

  1909. that's faithful

  1910. and dependable

  1911. and clear.

  1912. But in

  1913. guarding this deposit,

  1914. make sure

  1915. that you're also

  1916. avoiding the dangers.

  1917. This word

  1918. also kind of

  1919. carries

  1920. this

  1921. imperatival force,

  1922. this command

  1923. of avoiding

  1924. those dangers.

  1925. Don't allow

  1926. the message

  1927. to be tainted,

  1928. Timothy.

  1929. Don't get

  1930. caught up

  1931. in the kinds

  1932. of conversations

  1933. that those false

  1934. teachers are having.

  1935. Don't get caught

  1936. up in the

  1937. distractions

  1938. and the

  1939. endless

  1940. conversations,

  1941. the genealogies

  1942. and the kinds

  1943. of discussions

  1944. that would steer

  1945. one away

  1946. from the truth.

  1947. Don't allow

  1948. the gospel

  1949. to be diluted.

  1950. don't allow

  1951. it to be

  1952. perverted.

  1953. Don't allow

  1954. in your

  1955. communication

  1956. of the gospel

  1957. for some

  1958. to swerve

  1959. from the faith

  1960. because they're

  1961. wrapped up

  1962. in all the

  1963. things that

  1964. will lead

  1965. them away

  1966. from the

  1967. path.

  1968. And Timothy,

  1969. allow the grace

  1970. of God

  1971. to adorn

  1972. your life.

  1973. Be marked

  1974. by the work

  1975. of God's

  1976. grace.

  1977. Be driven

  1978. by the work

  1979. of God's

  1980. grace.

  1981. grace.

  1982. Let the

  1983. testimony

  1984. of God's

  1985. grace

  1986. guide

  1987. your efforts.

  1988. Let that

  1989. testimony

  1990. of God's

  1991. grace

  1992. inform the

  1993. way that

  1994. you interact

  1995. with others.

  1996. God,

  1997. allow this

  1998. grace,

  1999. which is the

  2000. evidence

  2001. of God's

  2002. presence,

  2003. to be

  2004. sweetly

  2005. present

  2006. in your

  2007. life.

  2008. Allow

  2009. the Holy

  2010. Spirit

  2011. to work

  2012. mightily

  2013. through you

  2014. because

  2015. only God

  2016. will continue

  2017. this work

  2018. in you,

  2019. Timothy.

  2020. Only God

  2021. will evidence

  2022. his power

  2023. through you,

  2024. Timothy.

  2025. And only God

  2026. will sustain

  2027. you,

  2028. Timothy.

  2029. So allow

  2030. his grace

  2031. to carry

  2032. you in

  2033. the work

  2034. that you're

  2035. doing.

  2036. And allow

  2037. the grace

  2038. of God

  2039. to be

  2040. present

  2041. in your

  2042. conversations

  2043. with others.

  2044. As we've

  2045. been looking

  2046. through this

  2047. letter

  2048. together,

  2049. we recognize

  2050. the significance

  2051. of the

  2052. doctrines

  2053. that God

  2054. has given

  2055. to us.

  2056. And recognizing

  2057. as we've

  2058. been working

  2059. our way

  2060. through,

  2061. that it's

  2062. not just

  2063. a body

  2064. of doctrine,

  2065. a body

  2066. of knowledge

  2067. that is

  2068. distant

  2069. and somehow

  2070. external

  2071. from us.

  2072. But we

  2073. recognize

  2074. that the

  2075. things that

  2076. we believe

  2077. about God

  2078. will shape

  2079. the way

  2080. we live.

  2081. And so

  2082. as people

  2083. look at

  2084. our life,

  2085. they'll

  2086. recognize

  2087. that there's

  2088. something,

  2089. hopefully,

  2090. something that

  2091. is uniquely

  2092. different from

  2093. us.

  2094. That we've

  2095. been changed

  2096. by the

  2097. gospel.

  2098. It changes

  2099. the way

  2100. we relate

  2101. to people.

  2102. It changes

  2103. the way

  2104. we respond

  2105. to problems

  2106. and difficulties.

  2107. It changes

  2108. the way

  2109. that we

  2110. interact

  2111. with those

  2112. who may

  2113. be treating

  2114. us unfairly.

  2115. It's the

  2116. gospel that

  2117. transforms us

  2118. as people.

  2119. So that we

  2120. can be men

  2121. and women

  2122. of God.

  2123. Representatives

  2124. for Him,

  2125. communicating

  2126. His word

  2127. and seeing

  2128. the gospel

  2129. life of

  2130. God show

  2131. up in

  2132. awakening

  2133. hearts

  2134. for faith

  2135. throughout

  2136. this world.

  2137. May God

  2138. help us

  2139. to be

  2140. faithful

  2141. as we

  2142. fight this

  2143. fight of

  2144. faith for

  2145. ourselves

  2146. and we

  2147. seek to

  2148. couple

  2149. ourselves

  2150. with the

  2151. body of

  2152. Christ

  2153. in fighting

  2154. this fight

  2155. of faith

  2156. as a

  2157. church

  2158. so that

  2159. we can

  2160. be a

  2161. pillar

  2162. and buttress

  2163. of the

  2164. truth.

  2165. May God

  2166. help us.

  2167. Let me

  2168. pray.

  2169. Lord,

  2170. thank You

  2171. for Your

  2172. work of

  2173. grace in

  2174. us.

  2175. Thank You

  2176. for calling

  2177. us to

  2178. salvation,

  2179. helping us

  2180. to be aware

  2181. of our

  2182. sin,

  2183. recognizing

  2184. we can't

  2185. work our

  2186. way to

  2187. God on

  2188. our own.

  2189. There is

  2190. no

  2191. righteousness

  2192. that we

  2193. can have

  2194. of our

  2195. own that

  2196. will get

  2197. us there.

  2198. sin has

  2199. separated us

  2200. from God,

  2201. that all

  2202. have sinned

  2203. and helped

  2204. us to fall

  2205. short of

  2206. the glory

  2207. of God.

  2208. It's only

  2209. through Your

  2210. Son,

  2211. Jesus,

  2212. through His

  2213. life of

  2214. righteousness,

  2215. through His

  2216. death on

  2217. the cross,

  2218. paying for

  2219. our sins,

  2220. making a

  2221. way,

  2222. and then

  2223. rising again

  2224. to offer

  2225. new life,

  2226. eternal life

  2227. for those who

  2228. believe.

  2229. God, I

  2230. pray if

  2231. there's anyone

  2232. here today

  2233. who has

  2234. never placed

  2235. their trust

  2236. in You,

  2237. that You

  2238. would lead

  2239. them to

  2240. salvation,

  2241. help them

  2242. to acknowledge

  2243. their sin,

  2244. to confess

  2245. it before

  2246. You,

  2247. knowing if

  2248. we confess

  2249. our sins

  2250. that You

  2251. are faithful

  2252. and just

  2253. to forgive

  2254. our sins

  2255. and to

  2256. cleanse us

  2257. from all

  2258. unrighteousness.

  2259. And Lord,

  2260. I pray that You

  2261. would help

  2262. us to

  2263. represent You

  2264. faithfully,

  2265. to embrace

  2266. the mission,

  2267. to take hold

  2268. of eternal

  2269. life,

  2270. and to live

  2271. out this life

  2272. in a way

  2273. that demonstrates

  2274. a commitment

  2275. and in

  2276. affection

  2277. for Jesus.

  2278. We pray

  2279. in Your

  2280. name.

  2281. Amen.

  2282. God bless you.

  2283. Have a great

  2284. week.

  2285. Amen.

  2286. Thank you.
