  1. Well, good morning. It's good to see all of you this morning.

  2. ! If you'd open up your Bibles with me, please, to Luke chapter 19.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  3. Luke chapter 19.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  4. If you're using your pew Bible, it's on page 879.

  5. Page 879.

  6. Well, during the first hour, we have, as many of you know,

  7. something called connect groups,

  8. which is kind of our style of adult Bible Sunday schools,

  9. but it's kind of driven more by discussion and interaction

  10. and trying to draw us all into the learning process.

  11. We have three connect groups that are taking place during these 12 weeks,

  12. these first 12 weeks of the new year.

  13. One of them is kind of looking at the attributes of Christ in the church,

  14. and I saw John Massaro, you're carrying a shepherd's crook today,

  15. so it was about the good shepherd and the sheep today.

  16. Okay, fantastic, good.

  17. I know that those of you who are part of that class are really enjoying that study.

  18. Thank you, John, for your preparation and helping us understand more about who we are as a church

  19. and how we respond to Christ.

  20. Others of you are involved in kind of breakout groups.

  21. The women and the teenage girls are going to a class exploring biblical femininity,

  22. and then the men and the younger men, the teenage guys, are exploring biblical masculinity.

  23. And the goal through these connect groups is to help kind of do this countercultural,

  24. what does the Bible say about what it means to be a man or a woman?

  25. It's so important.

  26. Maybe you have grown up and there were some things that were shared to you

  27. about what being a real man or being a real woman looks like.

  28. Like, real men don't eat quiche.

  29. You ever heard that one before?

  30. I think that's true.

  31. I think, personally, I think that's true.

  32. Some of you may disagree, but real men don't eat quiche.

  33. Or real men aren't afraid.

  34. Or real men don't worry.

  35. Or real men don't quit.

  36. But how about this one?

  37. It often goes to the top of the list.

  38. Real men don't cry.

  39. You got it.

  40. Real men don't cry, okay?

  41. And, you know, those of you, or those of us, I should say,

  42. who are like 50 and older will also understand that big girls don't cry yi-yi either.

  43. That's a song, by the way, 1962.

  44. Big girls don't cry.

  45. Well, this morning we're going to encounter a weeping Savior.

  46. A weeping Savior.

  47. And I think the reason why we get this picture of the fact that real men don't cry,

  48. or big girls don't cry yi-yi,

  49. is because tears are a symbol of weakness.

  50. At least in our economy.

  51. Tears demonstrate something that is out of control.

  52. Something that is unexpected.

  53. Something that hurts deeply.

  54. Something that's a surprise.

  55. Something that goes to the deepest parts of us.

  56. And emotes this response because we just couldn't do anything about what has just happened.

  57. And it breaks our heart.

  58. But perhaps tears in tenderness is not just a part of humanity.

  59. And that is the danger this morning.

  60. As we work through this passage today.

  61. And we see a weeping Savior.

  62. The danger for us is to think,

  63. well, this is Christ's humanity that's kind of breaking through.

  64. We see a glimpse of his humanity coming out.

  65. He's weeping over Jerusalem.

  66. But I wonder this morning if really built into the image of God and the reason why we find ourselves weeping,

  67. and by the way, we should be weeping more,

  68. is because built into the design, the image of God,

  69. is this glimpse of a weeping Savior.

  70. A weeping God.

  71. His heart is broken over the people of Israel.

  72. These are not self-serving tears, by the way.

  73. These are going to be tears for others.

  74. Tears for Jerusalem.

  75. Tears for the people.

  76. Tears because of the looming consequences that are coming

  77. because of their rejection of Christ

  78. and this unique visitation that they failed to see.

  79. Maybe it's godly to have tears.

  80. Maybe it's right and good for us to weep.

  81. After all, it is a command for us.

  82. And the Apostle Paul, even before we jump into our passage this morning,

  83. by way of reminder,

  84. we find the Apostle Paul in Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  85. He's commending sincere affection among God's people

  86. to echo the heart of God

  87. and built into this instruction by the Apostle Paul.

  88. We find in Romans chapter 12, verses 9 and 10, it says,

    Romans 12:9

  89. Let love be without hypocrisy.

  90. Abhor what is evil.

  91. Cling to what is good.

  92. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love

  93. in honor giving preference to one another.

  94. So what does love look like?

  95. Well, it looks this way.

  96. It means that the posture of our heart is to bless those who persecute us.

  97. To bless and curse not.

  98. It's to rejoice with those who rejoice.

  99. It's to weep with those who weep.

  100. So the measure of spirituality and maturity in the Christian life

  101. is to echo the heart of God in weeping these kind of tears.

  102. This word, by the way,

  103. this word for weeping here in Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  104. is the same word we find in our passage this morning,

  105. the weeping of our Savior.

  106. I wonder when was the last time you wept?

  107. I wonder when the last time that you wept,

  108. especially not just for the hurt in your own life,

  109. but you wept especially over the lostness around you.

  110. You came to appreciate and understand and recognize

  111. not just the danger,

  112. but the looming consequences

  113. of what's at stake for those

  114. who resist and reject the message

  115. of God's visitation that comes to us through the gospel.

  116. It is this morning as we look at the life of the Savior

  117. where Jesus,

  118. if we're really going to be the kind of man

  119. or the kind of woman that God has designed us to be,

  120. that biblical masculinity and femininity

  121. will echo the Savior in this.

  122. Weeping, concern, brokenness,

  123. and sensitivity for the lostness around them.

  124. And unlike the sensitivity that we might have

  125. where it's a limited sensitivity

  126. and we can't control the future

  127. and there is weakness in us,

  128. this is not the sensitivity we see in Jesus

  129. where Jesus had mastery over the circumstances,

  130. over the things that were going to go down

  131. that week in Jerusalem.

  132. Jesus knew not just what was going to happen,

  133. but by God's divine control,

  134. he was putting everything into place.

  135. So we see this morning in our passage today,

  136. we see our king.

  137. He's riding into Jerusalem,

  138. but he's not like most kings.

  139. And we're going to see this morning

  140. two things that help to stand out about this king.

  141. We're going to see his sensitivity.

  142. The sensitivity of our king in verses 41 to 44.

  143. And then we're going to see the sovereignty of our king

  144. in verses 45 to the end of the chapter.

  145. Sensitivity and sovereignty

  146. that are beautifully mingled together.

  147. It's almost beyond comprehension.

  148. How do these things fit together?

  149. And that's what we're going to check out

  150. in our passage today.

  151. We're going to read beginning in verse 41 to 48,

  152. or excuse me, 44.

  153. And then we'll pick up this first statement,

  154. the sensitivity of our king.

  155. It says,

  156. And when he drew near and saw the city,

  157. he wept over it, saying,

  158. Would that you, even you,

  159. had known on this day

  160. the things that make for peace.

  161. But now they are hidden from your eyes.

  162. For the days will come upon you

  163. when your enemies will set up barricades around you

  164. and surround you

  165. and hem you in on every side

  166. and tear you down to the ground,

  167. you and your children within you.

  168. And they will not leave one stone upon the other in you

  169. because you did not know the time of your visitation.

  170. The sensitivity of our king.

  171. And we're going to see the sensitivity

  172. that will come because of three factors.

  173. First, because he has a larger picture in view.

  174. How is Jesus able to be sensitive?

  175. Well, it's because of his sovereignty,

  176. of the events that are unfolding,

  177. that drives him to this very response,

  178. this sensitivity that's breaking through,

  179. that's coming out

  180. because he knows what's happening.

  181. He knows the posture of the hearts

  182. of those in the audience.

  183. Here we find him drawing near the city

  184. in verses 41 to 44

  185. are kind of in conjunction

  186. with the passage that we read last week

  187. about the triumphal entry.

  188. If you remember,

  189. Jesus and his disciples

  190. in last week's passage

  191. were part of this massive crowd.

  192. A massive crowd that's described

  193. in verse 37 as a multitude,

  194. numbering no doubt in the thousands,

  195. everywhere multitude or crowd is used

  196. in the gospel record.

  197. It's referring to thousands of individuals

  198. who've gathered there at Bethany

  199. and are now making this procession

  200. to Jerusalem.

  201. Bethany was a village

  202. about three miles away from Jerusalem.

  203. And I just want to put this graphic

  204. up here on the screen

  205. so we can kind of visualize a little bit

  206. of maybe what Jesus was seeing here.

  207. And Jesus has made his way

  208. from Bethany

  209. about three miles away from Jerusalem.

  210. We're kind of looking

  211. at the south side of Jerusalem.

  212. And so in the top right corner

  213. on the eastern side of the city,

  214. you see that big walled area there.

  215. That is the temple mount.

  216. That's the great temple mount

  217. that Herod built

  218. about 40 years to build.

  219. And just this side of that structure,

  220. there was an eastern gate

  221. that opened right up

  222. to that temple mount.

  223. And Jesus would have come from Bethany.

  224. He made his way to Bethphage.

  225. And you know,

  226. he sent disciples ahead.

  227. Those disciples retrieved a donkey.

  228. They brought it to Jesus.

  229. They put Jesus on that donkey.

  230. And they're making their way

  231. to Jerusalem.

  232. Jerusalem.

  233. The electricity in the air

  234. was unmistakable.

  235. The tone of celebration

  236. and worship.

  237. Cloaks that were laid on the ground.

  238. Branches that were waving.

  239. A chorus of praise and celebration.

  240. Hosanna.

  241. Blessed is the king who comes

  242. in the name of the Lord.

  243. And somewhere,

  244. somewhere on this approach,

  245. making his way

  246. down the Mount of Olives,

  247. rounding the corner

  248. from Bethphage.

  249. And now this view opens up

  250. where the entire city

  251. lies before him.

  252. And the gravity

  253. of what will happen

  254. in this coming week

  255. lands on Jesus

  256. as he's making his way

  257. into the city.

  258. And he weeps.

  259. Here Jesus will weep

  260. over the city.

  261. This word for weep

  262. is a word

  263. that is the strongest word

  264. in the Greek language

  265. for weeping.

  266. This is not petty weeping.

  267. This is expressive.

  268. This is deep.

  269. This is all out loud

  270. kind of weeping.

  271. It's the same kind of weeping

  272. by the way

  273. that we find

  274. in Matthew chapter 2

    Matthew 2:18

  275. verse 18

  276. where you remember Herod.

  277. He sent for the babies

  278. in Bethlehem

  279. that were under the age of two

  280. to be slaughtered.

  281. And it describes

  282. Rachel weeping

  283. for her children.

  284. That's the kind of weeping.

  285. Heartfelt.

  286. Anxiety driven.

  287. Weeping.

  288. Jesus is not caught up

  289. in the moment.

  290. He's not caught up

  291. in the celebration.

  292. Jesus has a laser

  293. like focus

  294. on what lies ahead.

  295. He's not soaking it up.

  296. This much deserved

  297. and long overdue

  298. worship and praise.

  299. Finally it's come.

  300. But it must have seemed

  301. unusual

  302. in this moment

  303. as Jesus is making

  304. his way into the city

  305. with a chorus of praise

  306. and the joyous

  307. shouts and accolades

  308. and here

  309. as the crowd

  310. will turn to Jesus

  311. he's not smiling

  312. he is wailing.

  313. He's wailing.

  314. Riding into Jerusalem

  315. surrounded by multitudes

  316. and here he is

  317. he sees this course

  318. of this week.

  319. He sees the ultimate rejection

  320. and it causes him

  321. to cry.

  322. It's a surprising response

  323. in the midst

  324. of this triumphant chorus.

  325. Anyone in the crowd

  326. who would have noticed

  327. must have been confused

  328. what is going on.

  329. But the tenderness

  330. of our Savior

  331. breaks out into the open.

  332. His sensitivity

  333. comes right out

  334. into the open.

  335. He is unashamed

  336. of his tears.

  337. He's not unaffected

  338. by his soon rejection

  339. and he's not unaware

  340. of the coming consequences

  341. on his people

  342. but make no mistake

  343. these are not

  344. self-serving tears.

  345. These are tears for them.

  346. Tears for the very people

  347. that are part of this crowd

  348. and that are leading him

  349. into Jerusalem.

  350. Jesus is crying

  351. not for himself

  352. he's crying

  353. and weeping for them.

  354. He was one

  355. who understood

  356. this larger picture

  357. that was in view.

  358. But this is not

  359. an isolated incident

  360. of the compassion of Christ.

  361. We find that his entire ministry

  362. is marked by compassion

  363. and I want to just draw

  364. our attention to that briefly

  365. so we can see

  366. that this is

  367. the heart of our Savior

  368. throughout his public ministry.

  369. It's not just a

  370. kind of once and done

  371. kind of thing.

  372. We have a compassionate Savior

  373. and so anyone

  374. of us who wants

  375. to echo

  376. the pattern

  377. of Christ's life

  378. will also

  379. adorn themselves

  380. with the same compassion.

  381. His compassion

  382. has often been

  383. the compelling part

  384. of his ministry.

  385. He's moved

  386. by deep

  387. feelings

  388. for others.

  389. You catch that?

  390. Jesus is moved

  391. by emotion.

  392. Emotion is good.

  393. It can be healthy

  394. feelings for others.

  395. In Matthew

    Matthew 9:36

  396. chapter 9

  397. verse 36

  398. it says

  399. when he saw

  400. the multitudes

  401. he was moved

  402. with compassion

  403. for them

  404. because they were

  405. weary and scattered

  406. like sheep

  407. having no shepherd.

  408. In Matthew 14

  409. 14

  410. this is the feeding

  411. of the 5,000

  412. he says

  413. when he went

  414. ashore

  415. and saw

  416. a great crowd

  417. he had compassion

  418. on them

  419. and healed

  420. their sick.

  421. In Luke

    Luke 7:13

  422. chapter 7

  423. verse 13

  424. as Jesus

  425. is making

  426. his way

  427. through

  428. a really

  429. obscure part

  430. of upper

  431. Galilee

  432. he comes

  433. to this city

  434. this little village

  435. out in the boondocks

  436. called Nain

  437. and he

  438. he sees

  439. this widow

  440. woman

  441. and her only

  442. son

  443. on a

  444. on a

  445. on a

  446. pier

  447. and they're

  448. walking him

  449. through the city

  450. this funeral

  451. procession

  452. and Jesus

  453. comes up

  454. and when the

  455. Lord saw her

  456. he had compassion

  457. on her

  458. and said to her

  459. do not

  460. weep

  461. do not

  462. weep

  463. this was not

  464. an out

  465. of the ordinary

  466. kind

  467. of expression

  468. for Jesus

  469. his heart

  470. was tender

  471. his service

  472. to people

  473. was driven

  474. by deep

  475. compassion

  476. and feeling

  477. you know

  478. the tenderness

  479. of Christ's heart

  480. over this

  481. great city

  482. reminded me

  483. of tears

  484. over another

  485. city

  486. and another

  487. prophet

  488. 800 years

  489. before

  490. another great

  491. city

  492. the city

  493. of Nineveh

  494. and that

  495. prophet

  496. Jonah

  497. who was

  498. called to

  499. go to

  500. that city

  501. he had

  502. tears

  503. as well

  504. in Jonah

    Jonah 3:1

  505. chapter 3

  506. verses 1

  507. and 2

  508. we find

  509. the instruction

  510. that God

  511. gave to

  512. Jonah

  513. then the

  514. word of

  515. the Lord

  516. came to

  517. Jonah

  518. the second

  519. time

  520. saying

  521. arise

  522. go to

  523. Nineveh

  524. that great

  525. city

  526. and call

  527. out against

  528. it

  529. the message

  530. that I

  531. will tell

  532. you

  533. so Jonah

  534. finally

  535. obeys

  536. and then

  537. there he

  538. goes

  539. to this

  540. city

  541. and he

  542. preaches

  543. this message

  544. of judgment

  545. and then

  546. after the

  547. message is

  548. preached

  549. we find

  550. in the

  551. narrative

  552. that he

  553. goes to

  554. the east

  555. of the

  556. city

  557. and he

  558. begins to

  559. set up a

  560. booth

  561. and he's

  562. there to

  563. watch

  564. God

  565. take care

  566. of business

  567. that's in

  568. his heart

  569. he wants

  570. the wicked

  571. enemies

  572. of his

  573. people

  574. to die

  575. but in

  576. Jonah chapter

    Jonah 4:1

  577. 4 verses 1

  578. and 2

  579. we find

  580. something

  581. different

  582. we find

  583. that God

  584. moved in

  585. the hearts

  586. of the

  587. people

  588. of

  589. Nineveh

  590. God

  591. opened

  592. their

  593. eyes

  594. to see

  595. their

  596. impending

  597. disaster

  598. and the

  599. people

  600. of the

  601. city

  602. repent

  603. and here

  604. is Jonah's

  605. response

  606. to the

  607. largest

  608. revival

  609. in Bible

  610. history

  611. and likely

  612. the largest

  613. one time

  614. revival

  615. in all

  616. of history

  617. itself

  618. 200,000

  619. Ninevites

  620. come

  621. to God

  622. repent

  623. from sin

  624. and how

  625. does Jonah

  626. respond

  627. it

  628. displeased

  629. Jonah

  630. exceedingly

  631. he was

  632. angry

  633. he was

  634. crying

  635. in other

  636. words

  637. and he

  638. prayed to

  639. the Lord

  640. and said

  641. oh Lord

  642. is not

  643. this what

  644. I said

  645. when I

  646. was in

  647. my country

  648. this is

  649. why I

  650. made haste

  651. to flee

  652. to Tarshish

  653. for I

  654. knew

  655. that you

  656. are a

  657. gracious

  658. God

  659. and

  660. merciful

  661. slow

  662. to

  663. anger

  664. and

  665. abounding

  666. in

  667. steadfast

  668. love

  669. and

  670. relenting

  671. from

  672. disaster

  673. a heart

  674. that was

  675. set

  676. against

  677. weeping

  678. the right

  679. way

  680. certainly

  681. not the

  682. heart

  683. that we

  684. see

  685. in the

  686. apostle

  687. Paul

  688. and not

  689. the heart

  690. that should

  691. be true

  692. of any

  693. believer

  694. who is

  695. moving in

  696. the direction

  697. of spiritual

  698. maturity

  699. as the

  700. apostle

  701. Paul will

  702. say

  703. in

  704. Philippians

    Philippians 3:18

  705. chapter 3

  706. verses 18

  707. and 19

  708. this is the

  709. expression

  710. of weeping

  711. that we

  712. need to

  713. emulate

  714. he says

  715. for many

  716. walk

  717. of whom

  718. I have

  719. told you

  720. often

  721. and now

  722. tell you

  723. even

  724. weeping

  725. that's our

  726. word

  727. they are

  728. enemies

  729. of the

  730. cross

  731. of Christ

  732. whose

  733. end

  734. is

  735. destruction

  736. whose

  737. God

  738. is their

  739. belly

  740. whose

  741. glory

  742. is in

  743. their

  744. shame

  745. who set

  746. their

  747. mind

  748. on

  749. earthly

  750. things

  751. the

  752. weeping

  753. heart

  754. of the

  755. apostle

  756. Paul

  757. that echoes

  758. the

  759. weeping

  760. heart

  761. of our

  762. savior

  763. over the

  764. same

  765. things

  766. this is

  767. the point

  768. that's

  769. emphasized

  770. in the

  771. next part

  772. of our

  773. passage

  774. the

  775. impending

  776. doom

  777. the

  778. disaster

  779. that's

  780. coming

  781. the

  782. purpose

  783. for

  784. tears

  785. and so

  786. we see

  787. in

  788. verses

  789. 42

  790. to 44

  791. we see

  792. what

  793. Jesus

  794. desires

  795. he desires

  796. peace

  797. for these

  798. people

  799. he's

  800. weeping

  801. because of

  802. the

  803. invitation

  804. and the

  805. welcome

  806. to enjoy

  807. peace

  808. but they're

  809. not

  810. participating

  811. verse

  812. 42

  813. would

  814. that

  815. you

  816. even

  817. you

  818. had

  819. known

  820. on

  821. this

  822. day

  823. the

  824. things

  825. that

  826. make

  827. for

  828. peace

  829. but now

  830. they are

  831. hidden

  832. from your

  833. eyes

  834. these were

  835. not

  836. self-serving

  837. tears

  838. that Jesus

  839. is weeping

  840. these are

  841. tears

  842. of pain

  843. that saw

  844. through

  845. the empty

  846. praise

  847. that saw

  848. through

  849. the

  850. superficial

  851. celebration

  852. Christ

  853. saw

  854. the

  855. deception

  856. that blinded

  857. the minds

  858. of those

  859. who were

  860. here

  861. they were

  862. hidden

  863. from their

  864. eyes

  865. he saw

  866. their

  867. calloused

  868. hearts

  869. he saw

  870. their fickle

  871. spirit

  872. and he saw

  873. the disaster

  874. of their

  875. decision

  876. to reject

  877. him

  878. these are

  879. the tears

  880. of one

  881. who knows

  882. that people

  883. have already

  884. turned the

  885. other way

  886. the way

  887. of peace

  888. was hidden

  889. from their

  890. eyes

  891. this word

  892. for hidden

  893. is a

  894. passive

  895. verb

  896. which means

  897. that they

  898. were recipients

  899. of action

  900. it means

  901. that it

  902. was concealed

  903. from them

  904. it was

  905. made invisible

  906. to them

  907. it was

  908. shielded

  909. from them

  910. they could

  911. not see

  912. the truth

  913. that was

  914. standing

  915. right in

  916. front of

  917. them

  918. Jesus

  919. their

  920. Messiah

  921. is there

  922. in front

  923. of them

  924. and they

  925. cannot

  926. see

  927. the truth

  928. they could

  929. not see

  930. this true

  931. salvation

  932. this way

  933. of peace

  934. peace

  935. is the

  936. word

  937. for

  938. harmony

  939. it's

  940. the

  941. word

  942. tranquility

  943. it's

  944. also

  945. connected

  946. to the

  947. Old Testament

  948. word

  949. shalom

  950. which is

  951. the word

  952. for health

  953. and wellness

  954. and peace

  955. and it is

  956. somewhat

  957. shocking

  958. that this

  959. city

  960. Jerusalem

  961. shalom

  962. that's built

  963. right into

  964. the name

  965. of the city

  966. this city

  967. of peace

  968. was missing

  969. the very

  970. peace

  971. that has

  972. been extended

  973. to it

  974. peace

  975. that Christ

  976. extended

  977. to them

  978. but peace

  979. they were

  980. rejecting

  981. instead

  982. they would

  983. receive

  984. the consequences

  985. of their

  986. rejection

  987. that we

  988. find in

  989. verses

  990. 43

  991. to 45

  992. or 43

  993. and 44

  994. for the day

  995. will come

  996. upon you

  997. when your

  998. enemies

  999. will set

  1000. up a

  1001. barricade

  1002. around you

  1003. and surround

  1004. you and

  1005. hem you

  1006. in on

  1007. every

  1008. side

  1009. and tear

  1010. you down

  1011. to the

  1012. ground

  1013. you and

  1014. your children

  1015. within you

  1016. and they

  1017. will not

  1018. leave one

  1019. stone

  1020. upon the

  1021. other

  1022. in you

  1023. because you

  1024. did not

  1025. know the

  1026. time of

  1027. your

  1028. visitation

  1029. you were

  1030. not looking

  1031. for the

  1032. right

  1033. salvation

  1034. this word

  1035. for visitation

  1036. is used

  1037. throughout the

  1038. Old Testament

  1039. to refer

  1040. to the

  1041. coming of

  1042. God

  1043. and that

  1044. coming of

  1045. God

  1046. is going

  1047. to come

  1048. one of

  1049. two ways

  1050. in the Old

  1051. Testament

  1052. either came

  1053. in terms

  1054. of God's

  1055. rescue

  1056. or it

  1057. came

  1058. in terms

  1059. of God's

  1060. judgment

  1061. but when

  1062. God's

  1063. presence

  1064. was there

  1065. one of

  1066. the two

  1067. were going

  1068. to happen

  1069. and now

  1070. the people

  1071. of the

  1072. first century

  1073. those Jewish

  1074. individuals

  1075. there had

  1076. the visitation

  1077. of God

  1078. Jesus

  1079. himself

  1080. God

  1081. in the

  1082. flesh

  1083. had taught

  1084. them

  1085. had healed

  1086. them

  1087. had served

  1088. them

  1089. his visitation

  1090. was there

  1091. his presence

  1092. was a reality

  1093. and they had

  1094. a decision

  1095. to make

  1096. enjoy the

  1097. salvation

  1098. of God

  1099. or experience

  1100. the consequences

  1101. the devastating

  1102. consequences

  1103. of rejection

  1104. and they

  1105. missed him

  1106. they missed

  1107. the salvation

  1108. because they

  1109. clung so

  1110. tightly

  1111. to their

  1112. own idea

  1113. and understanding

  1114. of what

  1115. salvation

  1116. involved

  1117. and Jesus

  1118. describes here

  1119. the total

  1120. destruction

  1121. of the very

  1122. thing that

  1123. they hung

  1124. on to

  1125. so much

  1126. they loved

  1127. Jerusalem

  1128. they loved

  1129. the temple

  1130. and Jesus

  1131. helps them

  1132. understand

  1133. that the

  1134. very things

  1135. they're hanging

  1136. on to

  1137. are the

  1138. things

  1139. they're going

  1140. to lose

  1141. enemies

  1142. will surround

  1143. the city

  1144. walls and

  1145. homes will

  1146. be torn

  1147. down

  1148. destruction

  1149. of property

  1150. and families

  1151. mothers

  1152. and children

  1153. not one

  1154. stone

  1155. that will

  1156. stand

  1157. on the

  1158. other

  1159. what was

  1160. meant to

  1161. be a

  1162. visitation

  1163. of salvation

  1164. becomes a

  1165. visitation

  1166. of judgment

  1167. and in

  1168. fact

  1169. a partial

  1170. fulfillment

  1171. of that

  1172. would happen

  1173. in 40

  1174. years from

  1175. the time

  1176. of Christ's

  1177. words

  1178. where Rome

  1179. would come

  1180. and sweep

  1181. through the

  1182. city of

  1183. Jerusalem

  1184. and they

  1185. would destroy

  1186. the city

  1187. they would

  1188. kill the

  1189. people

  1190. and they

  1191. would decimate

  1192. !

  1193. the temple

  1194. that visitation

  1195. of the Lord

  1196. had come

  1197. and because

  1198. of the

  1199. rejection

  1200. of Christ

  1201. resulted

  1202. in the

  1203. consequence

  1204. of harm

  1205. to their

  1206. city

  1207. you know

  1208. Jesus

  1209. extends

  1210. an offer

  1211. of peace

  1212. to us

  1213. as well

  1214. his

  1215. visitation

  1216. is still

  1217. present

  1218. today

  1219. in and

  1220. through

  1221. the gospel

  1222. in and

  1223. through the

  1224. presentation

  1225. of the

  1226. good news

  1227. he invites

  1228. us to

  1229. participate

  1230. to enjoy

  1231. the

  1232. presence

  1233. of God

  1234. in our

  1235. lives

  1236. and so

  1237. the

  1238. ultimate

  1239. peace

  1240. of course

  1241. is peace

  1242. with God

  1243. through our

  1244. Lord Jesus

  1245. Christ

  1246. it's a

  1247. peace

  1248. that comes

  1249. through faith

  1250. it's a

  1251. peace

  1252. that comes

  1253. through

  1254. confession

  1255. of sin

  1256. through

  1257. repentance

  1258. it's a

  1259. peace

  1260. that comes

  1261. through

  1262. dependence

  1263. on God

  1264. alone

  1265. for salvation

  1266. it's that

  1267. peace

  1268. that comes

  1269. and is

  1270. described

  1271. for us

  1272. by the

  1273. apostle Paul

  1274. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:14–16

  1275. chapter 2

  1276. verses 14

  1277. to 16

  1278. he says

  1279. for he

  1280. himself

  1281. is our

  1282. peace

  1283. who has

  1284. made

  1285. us

  1286. both

  1287. one

  1288. speaking

  1289. of

  1290. Jews

  1291. and

  1292. Gentiles

  1293. and has

  1294. broken

  1295. down

  1296. in his

  1297. flesh

  1298. the dividing

  1299. wall

  1300. of

  1301. hostility

  1302. by abolishing

  1303. the law

  1304. of commandments

  1305. expressed

  1306. in ordinances

  1307. that he

  1308. might create

  1309. in himself

  1310. one new

  1311. man

  1312. in place

  1313. of the

  1314. two

  1315. so making

  1316. peace

  1317. and he

  1318. might reconcile

  1319. us both

  1320. to God

  1321. in one

  1322. body

  1323. through the

  1324. cross

  1325. thereby

  1326. killing

  1327. the

  1328. hostility

  1329. in other

  1330. words

  1331. Jesus

  1332. himself

  1333. fulfilled

  1334. the law

  1335. and Jesus

  1336. himself

  1337. died

  1338. the death

  1339. that you

  1340. and I

  1341. deserve

  1342. on the

  1343. cross

  1344. he paid

  1345. the consequence

  1346. for sin

  1347. so that

  1348. in and

  1349. through

  1350. Jesus

  1351. alone

  1352. faith

  1353. in Christ

  1354. the separation

  1355. the division

  1356. the hostility

  1357. that we would

  1358. experience

  1359. with God

  1360. because of

  1361. our sin

  1362. has been

  1363. met by

  1364. Jesus'

  1365. sacrifice

  1366. and in

  1367. his body

  1368. it's wiped

  1369. away

  1370. do you know

  1371. Jesus this

  1372. morning

  1373. are you

  1374. part of

  1375. him

  1376. through

  1377. faith

  1378. are you

  1379. experiencing

  1380. and enjoying

  1381. not only

  1382. the peace

  1383. of God

  1384. for salvation

  1385. and for

  1386. eternal life

  1387. with God

  1388. but the

  1389. peace that

  1390. God desires

  1391. to give

  1392. every single

  1393. day

  1394. Colossians

  1395. 3 15

  1396. says this

  1397. let the

  1398. peace

  1399. of Christ

  1400. rule

  1401. in your

  1402. hearts

  1403. to which

  1404. indeed you

  1405. were called

  1406. in one

  1407. body

  1408. and be

  1409. thankful

  1410. God has

  1411. called us

  1412. to peace

  1413. the

  1414. visitation

  1415. of God

  1416. is here

  1417. the

  1418. welcome

  1419. to peace

  1420. is present

  1421. and that

  1422. peace

  1423. is not

  1424. the kind

  1425. of peace

  1426. that takes

  1427. away

  1428. all the

  1429. problems

  1430. of your

  1431. life

  1432. but it's

  1433. the kind

  1434. of peace

  1435. that settles

  1436. your heart

  1437. in the

  1438. authority

  1439. and wisdom

  1440. and sovereignty

  1441. of God

  1442. as you're

  1443. moving through

  1444. very hard

  1445. times

  1446. that God

  1447. is in

  1448. control

  1449. and God

  1450. is good

  1451. he is working

  1452. through those

  1453. things

  1454. and your

  1455. heart

  1456. can be

  1457. at rest

  1458. your heart

  1459. can be

  1460. at peace

  1461. he welcomes

  1462. you to enjoy

  1463. that

  1464. but he also

  1465. welcomes

  1466. you to

  1467. extend that

  1468. peace to

  1469. others

  1470. that your

  1471. heart would

  1472. break

  1473. for those

  1474. around you

  1475. that don't

  1476. know Jesus

  1477. because you

  1478. see the

  1479. looming

  1480. consequences

  1481. of sin

  1482. and you

  1483. like Christ

  1484. and the

  1485. apostle Paul

  1486. will weep

  1487. over those

  1488. who do not

  1489. know Jesus

  1490. and it will

  1491. compel us

  1492. to gospel

  1493. ministry

  1494. in verses

  1495. 45 to

  1496. 48 we

  1497. see not

  1498. just the

  1499. sensitivity

  1500. of the

  1501. savior

  1502. but we

  1503. see the

  1504. sovereignty

  1505. or the

  1506. authority

  1507. of our

  1508. king

  1509. the sovereignty

  1510. of our

  1511. king

  1512. comes right

  1513. out into

  1514. the open

  1515. and so

  1516. the sensitivity

  1517. of Christ

  1518. is perfectly

  1519. and beautifully

  1520. intermingled

  1521. with his

  1522. sovereignty

  1523. notice in

  1524. verse 45

  1525. he entered

  1526. the temple

  1527. and began

  1528. to drive

  1529. out

  1530. those

  1531. who

  1532. sold

  1533. saying

  1534. to them

  1535. it is

  1536. written

  1537. my house

  1538. shall be

  1539. a house

  1540. of prayer

  1541. but you

  1542. have made

  1543. it a den

  1544. of robbers

  1545. God is

  1546. sovereign

  1547. over his

  1548. house

  1549. he's sovereign

  1550. over his

  1551. house

  1552. his temple

  1553. and Luke

  1554. arranges the

  1555. events of

  1556. this narrative

  1557. to seem

  1558. like it's

  1559. moving in

  1560. consecutive

  1561. order

  1562. and of

  1563. course

  1564. it is

  1565. moving

  1566. in a

  1567. consecutive

  1568. way

  1569. but there's

  1570. an

  1571. interruption

  1572. that we

  1573. find

  1574. in the

  1575. gospel

  1576. of Mark

  1577. that helps

  1578. us realize

  1579. that this

  1580. event that we

  1581. read in

  1582. Luke 19

    Luke 19:45

  1583. verse 45

  1584. actually happens

  1585. on the next

  1586. day

  1587. Jesus will

  1588. ride into

  1589. Jerusalem

  1590. this triumphal

  1591. entry

  1592. and we find

  1593. from Mark

    Mark 11:11

  1594. chapter 11

  1595. verse 11

  1596. that Jesus

  1597. after the

  1598. triumphal

  1599. entry

  1600. enters

  1601. Jerusalem

  1602. he goes

  1603. into the

  1604. temple

  1605. and when

  1606. he had

  1607. looked around

  1608. at everything

  1609. as it was

  1610. already late

  1611. he went

  1612. out to

  1613. Bethany

  1614. with the

  1615. twelve

  1616. that would

  1617. be on

  1618. like a

  1619. Sunday

  1620. and then

  1621. in verse

  1622. 12

  1623. on the

  1624. following

  1625. day

  1626. and then

  1627. we pick

  1628. up our

  1629. narrative

  1630. here in

  1631. Luke

  1632. it's coupled

  1633. with Mark

  1634. and Matthew

  1635. they came

  1636. to Jerusalem

  1637. he entered

  1638. the temple

  1639. and began

  1640. to drive

  1641. out those

  1642. who sold

  1643. and those

  1644. who bought

  1645. in the

  1646. temple

  1647. and he

  1648. overturned

  1649. the tables

  1650. and the

  1651. money changers

  1652. and the

  1653. seats of

  1654. those

  1655. who sold

  1656. pigeons

  1657. now why

  1658. do I

  1659. go into

  1660. any

  1661. detail

  1662. about that

  1663. at all

  1664. is to

  1665. help you

  1666. understand

  1667. the reliability

  1668. of the

  1669. scripture

  1670. it's dependable

  1671. it's

  1672. trustworthy

  1673. it doesn't

  1674. conflict

  1675. with itself

  1676. but as we

  1677. understand

  1678. how the

  1679. pieces of

  1680. the narrative

  1681. fit together

  1682. it helps

  1683. us recognize

  1684. the wonder

  1685. of what's

  1686. taking place

  1687. Luke wants

  1688. to draw

  1689. our attention

  1690. to the

  1691. Messiah

  1692. the son

  1693. of David

  1694. he wants

  1695. you to

  1696. see

  1697. that in

  1698. this

  1699. concurrent

  1700. set

  1701. of events

  1702. that Jesus

  1703. truly is

  1704. the Messiah

  1705. he's the

  1706. one who's

  1707. not just

  1708. the king

  1709. of Israel

  1710. he is the

  1711. priest

  1712. over Israel

  1713. as well

  1714. Luke wants

  1715. to draw

  1716. our attention

  1717. to the

  1718. savior who's

  1719. king

  1720. his authority

  1721. his sovereignty

  1722. and it

  1723. serves to

  1724. help show

  1725. this one

  1726. massive

  1727. object

  1728. lesson

  1729. of Christ

  1730. identity

  1731. it comes

  1732. into full

  1733. view

  1734. for us

  1735. in this

  1736. account

  1737. we find

  1738. that Jesus

  1739. he comes

  1740. into the

  1741. temple

  1742. and he

  1743. drives out

  1744. the money

  1745. changers

  1746. he drives

  1747. out those

  1748. who are

  1749. using the

  1750. temple

  1751. for profit

  1752. he exercises

  1753. his authority

  1754. in the face

  1755. of the

  1756. authorities

  1757. of the

  1758. Jews

  1759. those

  1760. Jewish

  1761. authorities

  1762. that were

  1763. in the

  1764. temple

  1765. and also

  1766. the

  1767. governing

  1768. authorities

  1769. that were

  1770. also

  1771. in the

  1772. temple

  1773. on that

  1774. day

  1775. but

  1776. interestingly

  1777. enough

  1778. while the

  1779. crowd

  1780. expected

  1781. Jesus

  1782. as the

  1783. king

  1784. to come

  1785. and overturn

  1786. the Roman

  1787. empire

  1788. to address

  1789. the

  1790. oppressions

  1791. that they

  1792. were experiencing

  1793. in a

  1794. political

  1795. way

  1796. Jesus

  1797. actually

  1798. comes

  1799. in

  1800. and

  1801. surprisingly

  1802. addresses

  1803. a different

  1804. kind

  1805. of

  1806. oppression

  1807. a spiritual

  1808. one

  1809. darkness

  1810. of

  1811. heart

  1812. the

  1813. pollution

  1814. of

  1815. spiritual

  1816. life

  1817. that's

  1818. taking

  1819. place

  1820. here

  1821. in the

  1822. temple

  1823. the

  1824. Lord

  1825. was

  1826. declaring

  1827. that

  1828. he

  1829. was

  1830. not

  1831. so

  1832. concerned

  1833. with

  1834. Israel's

  1835. relationship

  1836. to Rome

  1837. but with

  1838. the relationship

  1839. they had

  1840. with God

  1841. he was

  1842. prioritizing

  1843. what really

  1844. mattered

  1845. the temple

  1846. here

  1847. is a

  1848. general

  1849. term

  1850. for

  1851. the

  1852. temple

  1853. grounds

  1854. as a

  1855. whole

  1856. this

  1857. complex

  1858. system

  1859. of

  1860. courts

  1861. that

  1862. went in

  1863. progressively

  1864. smaller

  1865. increments

  1866. the

  1867. outer

  1868. court

  1869. was the

  1870. court

  1871. of the

  1872. Gentiles

  1873. it was

  1874. named

  1875. this

  1876. way

  1877. because

  1878. this

  1879. was

  1880. the

  1881. place

  1882. where

  1883. Gentiles

  1884. could

  1885. go

  1886. and

  1887. assemble

  1888. but

  1889. they

  1890. were

  1891. forbidden

  1892. to go

  1893. any

  1894. further

  1895. the

  1896. inside

  1897. of

  1898. this

  1899. court

  1900. was

  1901. the

  1902. court

  1903. of

  1904. women

  1905. which

  1906. was

  1907. as

  1908. far

  1909. as

  1910. women

  1911. were

  1912. permitted

  1913. to

  1914. go

  1915. it

  1916. was

  1917. the

  1918. gate

  1919. beautiful

  1920. is

  1921. what

  1922. kind

  1923. of

  1924. stood

  1925. at

  1926. the

  1927. beginning

  1928. of

  1929. this

  1930. court

  1931. the

  1932. next

  1933. court

  1934. was

  1935. known

  1936. as

  1937. the

  1938. court

  1939. of

  1940. the

  1941. Israelites

  1942. it

  1943. was

  1944. through

  1945. the

  1946. Nankanor

  1947. gate

  1948. the

  1949. gate

  1950. the

  1951. Nankanor

  1952. gate

  1953. was

  1954. made

  1955. of

  1956. Corinthian

  1957. bronze

  1958. it

  1959. glistened

  1960. in

  1961. the

  1962. sunlight

  1963. and

  1964. it

  1965. was

  1966. so

  1967. massive

  1968. that

  1969. it

  1970. took

  1971. 20

  1972. men

  1973. to

  1974. push

  1975. the

  1976. Israelites

  1977. they

  1978. could

  1979. look

  1980. in

  1981. and

  1982. see

  1983. the

  1984. court

  1985. of

  1986. the

  1987. priest

  1988. which

  1989. was

  1990. this

  1991. inner

  1992. court

  1993. where

  1994. the

  1995. priest

  1996. would

  1997. perform

  1998. their

  1999. function

  2000. of

  2001. sacrifices

  2002. but

  2003. here

  2004. in

  2005. the

  2006. outer

  2007. court

  2008. the

  2009. court

  2010. of

  2011. the

  2012. Gentiles

  2013. was

  2014. where

  2015. all

  2016. of

  2017. this

  2018. money

  2019. exchange

  2020. was

  2021. taking

  2022. place

  2023. here

  2024. worshipers

  2025. would bring

  2026. their

  2027. sacrificial

  2028. animals

  2029. and

  2030. while

  2031. they

  2032. were

  2033. permitted

  2034. to

  2035. bring

  2036. their

  2037. own

  2038. animals

2039. those animals needed to be without blemish.

2040. And so what would normally happen,

2041. it was an animal that needed to be approved by a priest,

2042. and it behooved the priests that were in Jerusalem,

2043. in order to profit off the people,

2044. they would normally decline those animals

2045. and force those pilgrims to buy the animals

2046. that were offered to them on the temple grounds.

2047. Hundreds and thousands of animals

2048. would be exchanged or purchased.

2049. The temple tax was also needed to be paid

  2050. and using Jewish coinage.

2051. And so any of the foreigners that were coming from other lands

2052. would need to go through an exchange process.

2053. But because those who were in the temple court

2054. had a monopoly on the exchange,

2055. they were profiting and taking advantage of that exchange rate,

2056. thus turning this place of worship,

2057. and in Jesus' words, into a den.

  2058. of thieves.

2059. This will serve as bookends in the ministry of Jesus,

2060. where at the very beginning of his ministry,

2061. you remember from John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

2062. Jesus will also exert his authority in the temple.

2063. He'll come and he'll move out the money exchangers.

2064. He'll come purify the temple.

2065. And here at the end, it's happening the same way,

2066. to help us understand that the priority of Christ for his people

  2067. was purified worship.

2068. Worship of God, a house of prayer.

2069. Jesus exerts his sovereign force over this irreverent behavior.

  2070. He acts alone.

2071. He acts as one who's in authority.

  2072. He's undeterred.

2073. He uses this statement that's drawn from two Old Testament passages.

2074. My house shall be a house of prayer,

2075. but you have made it a den of robbers.

2076. This temple, which was set aside as a place for God's people

2077. to meet with God, had become polluted.

2078. To amplify this occasion, if this was happening on Monday,

2079. Monday would be the day in which the Passover lamb was chosen.

2080. That Passover lamb, which at the end of the week would be slaughtered

2081. and the blood would be spilt on the doorpost.

  2082. It would be sacrificed.

2083. This picture of this Passover lamb, this deliverance of God's people,

2084. and here the Passover lamb, Jesus Christ, comes into the temple

  2085. to purify his temple.

2086. Here, the religious leaders were making a business out of people's sin

2087. and were polluting the very courts of God.

2088. In verses 47 and 48, we see God's authority over his future.

2089. His authority over the future.

  2090. Notice,

2091. Be amazed at the graciousness of the Lord.

2092. Stand back and marvel at the wonder of Christ,

2093. teaching again, serving and ministering to the people,

2094. day by day in the courts,

2095. knowing exactly what was going to happen at the end of the week.

  2096. But here he is,

2097. extending himself in teaching ministry

2098. to these people every single day.

2099. Here they are, they're hanging on his every word.

2100. This is a word that's only used here in the New Testament

2101. to draw attention to the significance of Jesus' teaching

2102. and the authority that he brought.

2103. But of course, the religious leaders were resolute.

  2104. Throughout Christ's ministry,

2105. they had set their minds on destroying him.

  2106. In Matthew chapter 12, verse 14,

    Matthew 12:14

2107. we find the Pharisees went out and conspired against him

  2108. how to destroy him.

  2109. In John chapter 11, verse 53,

    John 11:53

2110. this is after the resurrection of Lazarus.

  2111. He said,

2112. So from that day on,

2113. they made plans to put him to death.

2114. But all throughout the life and ministry of Jesus,

2115. God himself was putting his hand of preservation over his son.

2116. We see numerous times where Jesus is able to escape.

  2117. Matthew chapter 2, verse 13,

    Matthew 2:13

2118. as we went through in our Advent messages,

2119. where King Herod sent to Bethlehem

2120. to exterminate the children ages 2 and under.

2121. And a vision came to Joseph.

2122. Get out of here and go to Egypt.

2123. And God preserved his son.

  2124. In Luke chapter 4,

    Luke 4 chapter mention

2125. the beginning of Jesus' public ministry,

2126. at first all the people marveled at his gracious words,

  2127. and then things turned.

  2128. And they hated him,

2129. and they drove him out of the city,

2130. and they would have pushed him off the cliff.

  2131. But somehow,

2132. Jesus is able to make his way through the crowd.

2133. He kind of evaporates before their very eyes,

  2134. and he's,

  2135. poof, he's gone.

  2136. In John chapter 7, verse 1,

    John 7:1

2137. Jesus is going to go up to Galilee,

2138. but he would not go about in Judea

2139. because the Jews were seeking to kill him.

  2140. And on several occasions,

  2141. both in John 7,

  2142. and in John 8,

  2143. and in John 10,

2144. they pick up stones to throw at him,

  2145. but somehow Jesus escapes

  2146. and evades their plans.

  2147. The plan of God.

  2148. Jesus would die,

2149. but not on this day.

2150. And as Peter will say in his sermon in Acts chapter 10,

    Acts 10 chapter mention

2151. it was so that the definite plan of God might be fulfilled for Christ,

2152. that he would die in the right way,

2153. and he would die at the right time.

2154. He would die according to God's definite plan

2155. from before the foundation of the world.

  2156. Later in this week,

2157. Jesus will also have another scene

2158. where his heart is expressed for Jerusalem.

  2159. In Matthew chapter 23, verse 37,

    Matthew 23:37

  2160. Jesus will say,

  2161. Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem,

2162. the city that kills the prophets

2163. and stones those who are sent to it,

2164. how often would I have gathered

  2165. your children together

2166. as hens gathers her brood under her wings,

2167. and yet you were not willing.

  2168. You were not willing.

2169. I wonder this morning how many of you,

2170. the invitation has been extended,

  2171. but you're not willing.

2172. The time of visitation has come.

  2173. The gospel is clear.

2174. God welcomes you into relationship.

2175. He invites you to enjoy peace.

2176. He wants you to participate

2177. in all that he has offered

2178. through his son, Jesus Christ.

  2179. But my...

  2180. I wonder this morning,

  2181. are you willing?

  2182. Are you willing?

2183. And for those of you who have been willing,

  2184. who have entered in

  2185. and enjoyed the benefits

2186. of the peace that's been extended to you by Jesus,

2187. you've come to him in faith.

2188. And the invitation for you to experience

  2189. this ongoing peace,

  2190. this visitation of God,

2191. is there day by day by day,

2192. as we have in our hands

2193. the very word of God,

2194. and we can enter in

  2195. and enjoy that visitation,

  2196. that relationship with God.

2197. But how many of us,

2198. how many of us are unwilling?

  2199. We're unwilling because

2200. of the things that are

  2201. dominating our attention,

  2202. the distractions of life,

  2203. the burdens we carry,

  2204. and so we're unwilling.

2205. And I wonder this morning,

  2206. I wonder this morning

2207. if our heart truly breaks

  2208. for those around us

2209. who do not know Jesus.

2210. Do you have a weeping heart?

2211. This is something that God's got to help me with,

  2212. a weeping heart.

  2213. I find myself,

  2214. my posture is often,

  2215. well,

2216. I guess they got what they deserved.

2217. You find yourself saying that?

  2218. Instead, like our Savior,

2219. we need to pray that God will help us

  2220. to weep.

  2221. To weep real,

  2222. heartfelt tears

2223. for those who do not know him.

  2224. And that it compels,

  2225. the compassion of God,

2226. like it compelled our Savior,

  2227. compels us as well.

2228. And so nothing can get in our way

  2229. because we're driven

2230. by the compassion of Christ

  2231. to extend ourselves

2232. and to share the truth of God's word,

2233. the gospel with those around us.

2234. And what's fascinating to me

2235. is when we really ask God

2236. to do this for us,

2237. when we really ask God

  2238. to give us opportunities,

  2239. you know what?

2240. God delights in giving opportunities.

  2241. Quick story,

  2242. and I'll close.

2243. When I was in seminary,

2244. this is going back several years now,

2245. I was in an evangelism class,

2246. and part of the class,

2247. part of the requirements for the class

2248. was that we had to share the gospel

  2249. with a person a week.

2250. And I'm thinking to myself,

  2251. how in the world

2252. am I going to be able to share the gospel

2253. with one person every week?

  2254. I'm like,

2255. this is not going to happen.

  2256. And so I prayed,

  2257. God,

2258. I got to fulfill this requirement.

  2259. I don't know how it's going to happen.

  2260. And wouldn't you know,

2261. God loved answering that prayer.

2262. And it happened in the most extraordinary ways.

2263. He wants to do that.

2264. He wants to use you

  2265. and your broken heart

2266. for people who are lost.

  2267. You see their lostness,

2268. and you want them not

  2269. to experience the consequences,

2270. and your heart is driven by compassion

  2271. and the gospel

  2272. and visitation,

  2273. the visitation of God

2274. that comes through the gospel.

  2275. And you're compelled

  2276. through compassion to share.

2277. May God help us to grow

  2278. in compassion.

  2279. O Lord,

2280. thank you for our Savior,

  2281. the true epic model

  2282. of biblical masculinity

  2283. and femininity,

  2284. as it were.

  2285. This heart of faith

2286. and this heart of compassion.

2287. God, work that into our own lives.

2288. May we mimic our Savior,

2289. imitate him in this way.

2290. I pray in Jesus' name.

  2291. Amen.

  2292. God bless you.

  2293. Have a great week.

  2294. God bless you.
