  1. You all just sang a mighty song just now.

  2. Inviting the Lord to speak through His word to your hearts.

  3. !

  4. It's the kind of word that requires a response.

  5. And so in that mighty song that we just sang, we invited the Lord to do something for us.

  6. To speak through His word and to grab our hearts and to lead us into the kinds of truths that we all need this morning.

  7. So that we can be the kinds of people that represent Him properly.

  8. And the kinds of people that will be approved by Him as servants who are faithful.

  9. It's a word that carries authority.

  10. I wonder if you have any experiences like me.

  11. Of people who have tried to speak into your life a word of authority.

  12. But they have none.

  13. Okay?

  14. Okay?

  15. Like for example, I'm thinking of a time back in the day when I was a high schooler.

  16. And I was mowing lawns for the summer.

  17. And I know that's kind of a lost art.

  18. Any of you teens mow lawns for the summer?

  19. Okay?

  20. Except for David who mows here.

  21. Okay?

  22. Good.

  23. Calvin.

  24. I see one back there.

  25. Great.

  26. Mow lawns for the summer.

  27. Okay?

  28. It's kind of a lost art.

  29. Well, I was like a junior or senior in high school.

  30. And so it was towards the springtime.

  31. And so because of being a junior or senior, I was taking accelerated classes.

  32. And I was part of a sporting event.

  33. And so all the practices kind of built into that.

  34. And I was involved in church.

  35. And all of the obligations on my time.

  36. There was just one day a week I had to mow.

  37. That was Saturday.

  38. So I had to do five lawns on a Saturday back to back.

  39. And then if there was any weekend where it rained and I couldn't do on a Saturday, I tried.

  40. I had to fit it in to the rest of the week.

  41. Okay?

  42. All of that is background for the scenario that I'm going to share with you.

  43. So I'm mowing this lawn.

  44. Okay?

  45. And it's a Saturday.

  46. And I'm halfway through the front part of the lawn about ready to move my way into the back.

  47. And somebody is taking a walk.

  48. Somebody from the neighborhood.

  49. He's coming around the corner.

  50. And he gets my attention and asks me to turn off the mower.

  51. Okay?

  52. So I turn off the mower.

  53. And he says, hey, do you live here?

  54. I said, no, I don't live here.

  55. He said, well, you realize, don't you, that you should be mowing much more often than you're mowing.

  56. You realize that?

  57. Now, my dad trained me well.

  58. Okay?

  59. He trained me well.

  60. And so my response was, well, thank you for that.

  61. Appreciate it.

  62. I'm doing my best.

  63. And I just can't get around to it more than just once a week.

  64. But in reflection, what's really going on in my mind is, who do you think you are?

  65. Like, obviously, this is not your yard.

  66. Lord, obviously, you're not the one who's calling the shots.

  67. And you're not the one who's paying me.

  68. You don't even live next door.

  69. What do you care?

  70. Who do you think you are?

  71. Or maybe for you younger ones that are still living at home, and you have a sibling that says,

  72. you know you're not supposed to do that.

  73. And you say, who do you think you are?

  74. I'm sure none of you have ever done that.

  75. That's very good of you.

  76. That's good.

  77. But there are occasions, are there not, when someone speaks into our life, and they carry

  78. a measure of authority because of the position they have.

  79. For example, I went to a parts store recently, and I got some parts for my car.

  80. There was some work I needed to do.

  81. And the guy at the counter says, hey, now, by the way, make sure that when you do this,

  82. you do this in this order.

  83. Don't do that first.

  84. Do that second.

  85. And he helped to lay out for me some of the order to make sure I wasn't going to ruin the

  86. very thing I was trying to fix.

  87. And then he stepped back and realized, oh, wait, wait a second.

  88. You didn't ask for this advice.

  89. I'm just giving it to you.

  90. And so he kind of backtracked a little bit.

  91. But I'm like, hey, no, listen, this is great.

  92. Thank you very much.

  93. I need the help.

  94. You can speak into my life.

  95. You can have some authority in this area.

  96. It's okay.

  97. Or those of you who've been to a doctor, and you've had maybe an event that's taken place,

  98. and the doctor says, now, listen, this has happened.

  99. Make sure that you stay away from this, and that you do this, and you take that, and they

  100. carry some authority, some weight with the words that they say.

  101. We understand that teaching and instruction is a way for us to exert a level of authority.

  102. Right?

  103. When someone asserts themself over you, they teach you like a teacher.

  104. They instruct you.

  105. They exhort you.

  106. They rebuke you.

  107. They confront you.

  108. Chances are, if they're doing that, they have a level of authority.

  109. When they have authority, it matters.

  110. It carries force.

  111. When they don't have authority, you're like, who do you think you are?

  112. Why in the world are you opening your mouth?

  113. You can just go away.

  114. Hopefully, you're not responding that way.

  115. But Jesus' public ministry from the very beginning is one that exerted this kind of authority.

  116. Jesus taught wherever he went.

  117. He's teaching in synagogues.

  118. He's teaching in villages.

  119. He's teaching in countrysides.

  120. He's teaching along the shoreline.

  121. He's teaching along the way.

  122. His disciples are coming along.

  123. Wherever Jesus is going, he's teaching.

  124. It's a way for him to demonstrate this measure of authority.

  125. He not only has information to share.

  126. He has authority in the things that he shares.

  127. And of course, there's no place that carried as much authority and a center of authority as the temple.

  128. In Jerusalem.

  129. The very center of worship for the nation of Israel.

  130. The heart and soul of the country was right there in Jerusalem.

  131. And so, this is where the presence of God was.

  132. And so, there's no other place that the force of teaching and authority would be present than in the temple.

  133. And that's where we encounter Jesus today.

  134. If you have your Bibles, please open them with me to Luke chapter 20.

    Luke 20 chapter mention

  135. And if you're using the Pew Bible, you can find us on page 879.

  136. 879.

  137. We find in this section, the religious leaders, the supposed authorities over Israel,

  138. are confronting Jesus with the question that we're going to find in verse 2.

  139. That is, tell us by what authority you do these things.

  140. In other words, who do you think you are?

  141. And if it wasn't clear throughout the whole of Jesus' public ministry,

  142. in this last week of Jesus' life leading up to the cross,

  143. it's going to come at rapid succession.

  144. And the identity of Jesus is going to come through in the way that he speaks.

  145. It's going to come through in the things that he does.

  146. It's going to come through in the parables and the illustrations that he uses.

  147. He's going to receive and promote his identity so that it is without question

  148. who Jesus is and what he's come to do.

  149. So, Jesus will respond to this question.

  150. And he'll help in this passage, in verses 1 to 18,

  151. to address four ways, four identities that Christ has

  152. that he's going to provide for this group of religious leaders.

  153. First, Jesus is the Savior.

  154. Jesus is the Savior.

  155. If you're there with me in Luke chapter 20,

    Luke 20 chapter mention

  156. let me just read the first couple of verses to build the context for our study today.

  157. It says,

  158. One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel,

  159. the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up and said to him,

  160. Tell us by what authority you do these things.

  161. Or who is it that gave you this authority?

  162. Right here at the beginning, we notice that Jesus is teaching.

  163. And we don't know what day this is,

  164. but we do know this is the pattern of Jesus' life in ministry

  165. over the stretch of these few days.

  166. We saw that back in Luke chapter 19, verse 47.

    Luke 19:47

  167. And he was teaching daily in the temple.

  168. This is what Jesus was going to do.

  169. He was making himself accessible.

  170. Having ridden into the city of Jerusalem,

  171. this triumphal entry on a Sunday,

  172. and having purged and cleansed the temple on a Monday,

  173. here he is on a Tuesday, a Wednesday, or a Thursday.

  174. We don't know.

  175. Here he is again in the temple teaching.

  176. Right at the center of it all.

  177. Jesus is not hiding.

  178. He's there in plain sight.

  179. He's not running for cover.

  180. He's not isolating outside of Jerusalem.

  181. He's not biding his time.

  182. And as the Passover festivities are taking place,

  183. here the Passover lamb will teach and serve his people.

  184. This Passover festivities,

  185. they're all coming to find their Passover lamb,

  186. and the Passover lamb is right there in front of them,

  187. teaching them, serving them.

  188. Here Jesus is preaching and teaching,

  189. and likely teaching in the court of the Gentiles.

  190. This is the outer court of this complex temple system.

  191. Listen, this is the very place where Christ had just come the day before,

  192. and he had purged it of the money changers.

  193. He had purged it of those who were buying and selling animals.

  194. Here he was again, having cleared it out,

  195. and having reclaimed this space for its intended purpose,

  196. that we find in chapter 19, verse 46.

  197. My house shall be a house of prayer,

  198. but you have made it a den of robbers.

  199. And here Jesus is,

  200. restoring it back to its original purpose,

  201. the idea of worship and affection and devotion to God.

  202. This would be the spot in the temple.

  203. Of course, it had the greatest access,

  204. being the court of the Gentiles.

  205. Whether you were an outsider or an insider,

  206. whether you were a male or a female,

  207. the teaching ministry of Jesus is here.

  208. And notice what he's teaching.

  209. It says he's teaching and preaching the gospel.

  210. This word for teaching and preaching are present participles,

  211. which means this is an activity that has this ongoing sense

  212. of Jesus' life throughout this week.

  213. That is why Jesus is here in the temple.

  214. He's confident in the plan of the Father.

  215. His grace is extended to the people.

  216. His example of self-sacrifice

  217. and continuing to extend himself

  218. and expend himself for these individuals.

  219. This compassion to a people

  220. who in just a few short days

  221. are going to put him on the cross.

  222. It's referred to throughout the gospel of Luke

  223. as teaching this good news.

  224. This gospel we find all the way at the beginning

  225. in his public ministry in Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  226. He's preaching the good news of the kingdom.

  227. Well, what was that?

  228. Well, it was the good news of forgiveness of sin.

  229. It was the good news of repentance

  230. and salvation that was offered through Jesus.

  231. It was this good news that most recently we saw

  232. as Jesus is making his way through Jericho

  233. and he makes a stop at Zacchaeus' house

  234. and he says in Luke 19 verse 10,

    Luke 19:10

  235. the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.

  236. That was good news.

  237. And that's why Jesus was here.

  238. And no doubt during the Passover,

  239. as the people of Israel were celebrating

  240. and taking part of these Passover festivities,

  241. the remembrance of the blood

  242. that had been painted on the doorposts

  243. and this physical deliverance out of Egypt.

  244. And here Jesus was just days away

  245. from providing the greatest deliverance

  246. that man would ever need,

  247. the deliverance from sin.

  248. No doubt providing greater urgency,

  249. helping to provide a level of energy and power

  250. for the word of the gospel that he was teaching

  251. and preaching to these people today.

  252. Jesus is here as the Lamb of God

  253. who takes away the sin of the world.

  254. Drawing the crowds who packed that space

  255. and flocked to hear him,

  256. here he is.

  257. And they're eating out of the palm of his hand

  258. as we saw in chapter 19.

  259. They were hanging on every word.

  260. But Jesus' teaching was not just gaining

  261. the observation and the attention of the crowds.

  262. It was gaining attention from another group as well.

  263. This group of religious leaders

  264. who approach him and ask this question.

  265. Jesus.

  266. Jesus was the Savior.

  267. And now as the Pharisees will ask him,

  268. by whose authority do you do this?

  269. Jesus will launch into another form of his identity

  270. by helping them understand

  271. that Jesus is also sent from heaven.

  272. He is the heaven-sent messenger.

  273. He is the validated voice from God to men.

  274. Notice at the end of verse 1 of chapter 20,

  275. it says,

  276. He answered them,

  277. Now tell me,

  278. was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?

  279. And they discussed it with one another and said,

  280. If we say from heaven,

  281. he will say,

  282. Why did you not believe him?

  283. But if we say from man,

  284. all the people will stone us to death,

  285. for they are convinced that John was a prophet.

  286. So they answered that they did not know

  287. where it came from.

  288. And Jesus said to them,

  289. Neither will I tell you

  290. by what authority I do these things.

  291. In order to really understand

  292. or appreciate what's taking place here,

  293. we have to recognize that the temple

  294. being a place that was primarily devoted

  295. to worship and prayer and sacrifice,

  296. it was also the center of teaching.

  297. We saw this as a center of teaching

  298. going all the way back

  299. to the very beginning of the Gospel of Luke

  300. where we find Jesus there.

  301. He is learning from teachers.

  302. In Luke chapter 2, verses 46 and 47,

    Luke 2:46

  303. it says that after three days,

  304. they found him,

  305. speaking of Mary and Joseph

  306. who were Jesus' parents,

  307. he was sitting among the teachers,

  308. listening to them

  309. and asking them questions.

  310. All who heard him

  311. were amazed at his understanding

  312. and his answers.

  313. Here Jesus is in the temple,

  314. the center of worship,

  315. but also a place of teaching and learning.

  316. And Jesus is there,

  317. learning there in the temple as a boy.

  318. But this was not your run-of-the-mill

  319. kind of worship center.

  320. This was the center of Jewish religion,

  321. the heart and soul of the nation.

  322. And so just as local rabbis and teachers

  323. would need the approval

  324. of the synagogue leaders

  325. in order to teach in a synagogue,

  326. you can imagine that this place

  327. of such notoriety

  328. would also need validation

  329. from somebody of interest

  330. and authority within the temple structure,

  331. a religious leader.

  332. So this was not an invalid question.

  333. This was a legitimate question

  334. that they're asking.

  335. The truth is,

  336. these religious leaders

  337. have been wanting to put Jesus to death

  338. for some time now.

  339. Ever since Lazarus was raised from the dead,

  340. and this,

  341. that event was the last straw in their mind.

  342. We find from John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

  343. that it was because

  344. of the raising of Lazarus from the dead,

  345. they were all set on destroying him.

  346. So here he is,

  347. he's teaching again.

  348. And it's abundantly clear

  349. that the religious leaders

  350. weren't the one who validated him

  351. and authorized him to teach in this place.

  352. Entire city knew

  353. that those very people

  354. were seeking to arrest him.

  355. Well,

  356. here he is,

  357. carrying out ministry

  358. in plain sight.

  359. In direct view

  360. of their normal activities,

  361. on their home turf,

  362. as it were,

  363. it's a direct assault

  364. to their supposed authority.

  365. A direct competition

  366. with their teaching.

  367. You can imagine

  368. that they're trying to carry out

  369. their own little teaching venues,

  370. but the person

  371. who seems to be

  372. attracting the most attention,

  373. and it says in other places

  374. that the entire city of Jerusalem

  375. was drawn to the teaching of Christ.

  376. And so,

  377. Jesus is getting all of the attention,

  378. drawing it away from them.

  379. And here he is,

  380. gaining favor with the people,

  381. putting the religious leaders

  382. in their place,

  383. challenging their threat of arrest,

  384. which, of course,

  385. he had every reason to do.

  386. They come into the temple

  387. and they ask this question.

  388. By what authority

  389. do you do these things?

  390. And Jesus will respond

  391. as he does so often,

  392. rather than with a direct answer,

  393. he will now give them a question.

  394. Jesus asks them

  395. a question

  396. related to

  397. John the Baptist

  398. and his ministry.

  399. Because Jesus wasn't

  400. after just an answer.

  401. These individuals

  402. knew the answer.

  403. They had the information.

  404. They didn't need

  405. any more added truth

  406. to help them understand

  407. who Jesus claimed to be.

  408. This was an issue

  409. of their heart.

  410. And likely a question

  411. that they were using

  412. to draw Jesus out

  413. into the open,

  414. to help him

  415. come to a place

  416. of discrediting himself

  417. in their minds

  418. by committing blasphemy.

  419. blasphemy.

  420. This was a way

  421. to trap him.

  422. But Jesus wasn't going to

  423. go for that.

  424. So he asks them

  425. this question

  426. we see in verse 3.

  427. Was the baptism

  428. of John

  429. from heaven

  430. or from man?

  431. Ultimately,

  432. the answer was not

  433. the issue.

  434. It was an issue

  435. of the heart.

  436. Who is John?

  437. Was he from heaven

  438. or was he from man?

  439. And if your heart

  440. is aligned

  441. in the right place,

  442. then you'll be able

  443. to recognize

  444. who I am

  445. and you'll be willing

  446. to accept what I say.

  447. Jesus was not unwilling

  448. to disclose the truth

  449. to this group.

  450. On several occasions,

  451. even recently,

  452. Jesus was more than happy

  453. to identify

  454. who he was.

  455. Just five months earlier,

  456. we find at the feast

  457. of dedication

  458. in John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  459. they ask a very pointed question,

  460. the same group of men.

  461. How long will you

  462. keep us in suspense,

  463. he says,

  464. in John chapter 10,

    John 10:24

  465. verse 24.

  466. If you are the Christ,

  467. tell us plainly.

  468. And Jesus answers,

  469. I told you

  470. and you do not believe.

  471. The works that I do

  472. in my Father's name

  473. bear witness about me.

  474. But you do not believe

  475. because you are not

  476. among my sheep.

  477. I've already told you.

  478. I've already made this clear.

  479. It's very evident.

  480. Your heart is set against me

  481. because you do not belong to me.

  482. You're not one of my sheep.

  483. So this wasn't an issue

  484. of needing more knowledge.

  485. This was an issue

  486. of a heart.

  487. So Jesus poses this question

  488. and it was clear

  489. that the religious leaders

  490. knew who John the Baptist was.

  491. They had been present

  492. at John the Baptist's ministry

  493. going all the way back

  494. to the beginning

  495. as we find in John chapter 1,

    John 1:19

  496. verse 19.

  497. It says,

  498. and this is the testimony of John.

  499. When the Jews

  500. sent priests and Levites

  501. from Jerusalem

  502. to ask him,

  503. who are you?

  504. He confessed

  505. and did not deny

  506. but confessed,

  507. I am not the Christ.

  508. This is John the Baptist.

  509. And the same group

  510. of religious leaders

  511. sending their own representatives

  512. out to John the Baptist

  513. to ask this pointed question.

  514. But John will continue

  515. to fill out the answer

  516. in John chapter 1,

    John 1:29–34

  517. verses 29 to 34.

  518. I'm not the Christ

  519. but I'll tell you who is.

  520. It says,

  521. the next day,

  522. he,

  523. speaking of John the Baptist,

  524. saw Jesus coming towards him

  525. and said,

  526. behold,

  527. the Lamb of God

  528. who takes away

  529. the sin of the world.

  530. There he is.

  531. After me comes a man

  532. who ranks before me

  533. because he was before me.

  534. For this purpose,

  535. I came baptizing with water

  536. that he might be revealed to Israel

  537. and I have borne witness

  538. that this is the Son of God.

  539. There he is.

  540. Without mistake,

  541. as clearly

  542. and as directly

  543. as you could be,

  544. John the Baptist

  545. gave witness

  546. of the fact

  547. that Jesus was,

  548. in fact,

  549. the Son of God.

  550. He was the Lamb of God.

  551. And these religious leaders

  552. knew it.

  553. They knew from the very beginning

  554. and they had challenged Jesus

  555. throughout his ministry

  556. and the identity of Christ

  557. as being from heaven

  558. was clear.

  559. But they need to respond.

  560. So they have a little huddle.

  561. And in this little huddle,

  562. they're negotiating their answers.

  563. They're making sure

  564. they come up with the right answer.

  565. If we say he's from heaven,

  566. he will say,

  567. why did you not believe?

  568. But if we say from man,

  569. then all the people will stone us.

  570. So the answer,

  571. we do not know.

  572. Which was the lesser

  573. of two evils,

  574. perhaps.

  575. But the answer they give

  576. still undermines

  577. their credibility.

  578. Because if the people

  579. who are there,

  580. the common folks,

  581. as it were,

  582. who know who Jesus is

  583. and have appreciated

  584. and come to understand

  585. the ministry of John the Baptist,

  586. if they know

  587. where John came from,

  588. how is it

  589. that these spiritual

  590. religious leaders

  591. have no idea?

  592. Their credibility

  593. is gone.

  594. And while Jesus

  595. would not answer

  596. their question directly,

  597. now he will provide them

  598. an answer

  599. through this parable

  600. that he shares

  601. that provides

  602. very clear information

  603. again on his identity.

  604. This parable,

  605. we find in verses 9 to 16,

  606. help us understand

  607. that Jesus is claiming

  608. to be the son,

  609. the very son of God.

  610. Jesus is the son.

  611. Beginning in verse 9,

  612. it says,

  613. And he began to tell

  614. the people this parable.

  615. A man planted a vineyard

  616. and led it out to tenants

  617. and went into another country

  618. for a long while.

  619. When the time came,

  620. he sent a servant

  621. to the tenants

  622. so that they would give him

  623. some of the fruit

  624. of the vineyard.

  625. But the tenants beat him

  626. and sent him away

  627. empty-handed.

  628. And he sent another servant,

  629. but they also beat

  630. and treated him shamefully

  631. and sent him away

  632. empty-handed.

  633. And he sent yet a third.

  634. This one they also wounded

  635. and cast out.

  636. Then the owner of the vineyard

  637. said,

  638. What shall I do?

  639. I will send my beloved son.

  640. Perhaps they will respect him.

  641. But when the tenants saw him,

  642. they said to themselves,

  643. This is the heir.

  644. Let us kill him

  645. so that the inheritance

  646. may be ours.

  647. And they threw him out

  648. of the vineyard

  649. and killed him.

  650. What then will the owner

  651. of the vineyard do to them?

  652. He will come

  653. and destroy those tenants

  654. and give the vineyard

  655. to others.

  656. When they heard this,

  657. they said,

  658. Surely not.

  659. Of course,

  660. the point of the parable

  661. and the pieces of the story

  662. are fairly clear.

  663. The nation of Israel

  664. was often related

  665. to a vineyard

  666. in the Old Testament.

  667. We find that really prominently

  668. prominently in Isaiah chapter 5.

    Isaiah 5 chapter mention

  669. Isaiah 5 verses 1 and 5 and 7

    Isaiah 5:1

  670. says this,

  671. Let me sing for my beloved

  672. my love song

  673. concerning his vineyard.

  674. My beloved had a vineyard

  675. on a very fertile hill

  676. and now I will tell you

  677. what I will do to my vineyard.

  678. I will remove its hedges

  679. and it shall be devoured.

  680. I will break down its walls

  681. and it shall be trampled down.

  682. For the vineyard

  683. of the Lord of hosts

  684. is the house of Israel.

  685. And those religious leaders

  686. knew exactly

  687. when Jesus is speaking

  688. about this vineyard

  689. that he is relating

  690. this picture

  691. to the nation of Israel.

  692. And of course,

  693. the tenants

  694. of that vineyard

  695. were these religious leaders

  696. that God entrusted

  697. this vineyard to.

  698. They were supposed to care for it.

  699. They were supposed to tend it.

  700. And the servants

  701. who were sent to gather

  702. some of the fruit

  703. were the prophets.

  704. Those prophets

  705. that carried the instructions

  706. and commands of God.

  707. They came to yield

  708. or to benefit

  709. from the fruit

  710. of the vineyard.

  711. This life

  712. of the nation

  713. of Israel

  714. and the affections

  715. and the fruit

  716. of that nation.

  717. They came with a word

  718. from the owner.

  719. His instructions,

  720. his demands,

  721. but the tenants

  722. pushed them away.

  723. It's exactly

  724. what Jesus

  725. refers to

  726. throughout his public ministry

  727. about the normal response

  728. of the people

  729. of Israel,

  730. the tenants,

  731. as it were,

  732. of the nation of Israel

  733. to the instructions

  734. and words

  735. from the prophets.

  736. Kind of crystallizes

  737. for us

  738. in Luke chapter 13

    Luke 13:34

  739. verse 34

  740. where Jesus cries

  741. over the city.

  742. Oh Jerusalem,

  743. Jerusalem,

  744. the city that kills

  745. the prophets

  746. and stones those

  747. who are sent to it.

  748. How often

  749. I would have gathered

  750. your children together

  751. as a hen

  752. gathers her brood

  753. under her wings

  754. and you were

  755. not willing.

  756. This is not only

  757. the testimony

  758. of Jerusalem,

  759. but Jerusalem

  760. that kind of

  761. represents the nation

  762. in totality,

  763. the heart and soul

  764. as it were

  765. of the people

  766. of Israel

  767. and the response

  768. especially here

  769. in the center

  770. where the religious leaders

  771. were helping

  772. to provide

  773. their leadership

  774. and authority.

  775. This was the center

  776. of resistance

  777. as it were

  778. from the word

  779. from the prophets.

  780. And finally,

  781. the owner

  782. sends the son

  783. and Jesus refers

  784. to this son

  785. in the final part

  786. of this parable.

  787. And there's some

  788. enlightening things,

  789. some elements

  790. that we find

  791. in this final section

  792. about the response

  793. of the tenants

  794. to the son.

  795. Notice,

  796. first of all,

  797. that the tenants

  798. recognize the son.

  799. They recognize the son.

  800. This is the heir,

  801. they say.

  802. They know who it is.

  803. They realize

  804. that he's not

  805. just another servant.

  806. It's clear to them.

  807. And so the plan

  808. that they have

  809. to remove him

  810. and to kill him

  811. is not a plan

  812. devised out of ignorance

  813. but out of knowledge.

  814. Out of knowing identity,

  815. they know the son

  816. and they're still

  817. going to carry out

  818. this plan.

  819. Next,

  820. secondly,

  821. notice the insanity

  822. of their plan.

  823. let us kill him

  824. so that the inheritance

  825. may be ours.

  826. Now,

  827. in what universe

  828. would that actually

  829. be true?

  830. But that's what

  831. depraved minds do.

  832. Depraved minds

  833. and hearts

  834. turn reality

  835. and truth

  836. upside down.

  837. Rationality

  838. is removed.

  839. They convince themselves

  840. of an alternate reality

  841. reality.

  842. And by the way,

  843. that's what

  844. depraved hearts

  845. and minds

  846. do consistently.

  847. We think,

  848. we're going to do

  849. our own thing.

  850. I want to have

  851. this inheritance

  852. for myself.

  853. I'm going to reject

  854. the clear

  855. marching orders

  856. of the Lord himself.

  857. And I'll be able

  858. to have what I want

  859. and I'll be able

  860. to get it

  861. and enjoy it.

  862. And our depraved minds

  863. create an alternate

  864. reality

  865. for us

  866. just like it did

  867. for the tenets

  868. of this parable.

  869. No, actually,

  870. the opposite

  871. is going to happen.

  872. You're not going

  873. to be able

  874. to have the inheritance.

  875. There are consequences

  876. that are coming.

  877. And so Jesus poses

  878. the question

  879. to the crowd.

  880. He says,

  881. what then will

  882. the owner

  883. of the vineyard do?

  884. And in our passage

  885. here in

  886. the Gospel of Luke,

  887. Jesus will answer

  888. that question,

  889. provide the answer

  890. to that question

  891. in verse 19.

  892. Excuse me.

  893. Verse 16.

  894. He will come

  895. and destroy

  896. those tenants

  897. and give the vineyard

  898. to others.

  899. In Matthew's account,

  900. we find that the crowd

  901. actually responds

  902. to the question.

  903. Matthew chapter 21,

    Matthew 21:41

  904. verse 41,

  905. it says,

  906. they said to him,

  907. he will put those

  908. wretches to a miserable

  909. death

  910. and let out the vineyard

  911. to other tenants

  912. who will give him

  913. the fruits of the season.

  914. Now, which is it?

  915. The answer is,

  916. both.

  917. Jesus asks the question

  918. to the crowd

  919. and the answer

  920. is so obvious,

  921. the crowd responds.

  922. And Jesus reinforces

  923. the truth

  924. by reiterating it

  925. and saying,

  926. yes,

  927. that's exactly

  928. what's going to happen.

  929. But then we get

  930. this response

  931. from another group

  932. of individuals.

  933. And while the text

  934. in Luke is not clear,

  935. I think this group

  936. of representatives

  937. that says,

  938. certainly not,

  939. is the group

  940. of religious leaders

  941. who understands

  942. that this parable

  943. is exactly directed

  944. to them.

  945. Notice in verse 19

  946. of Luke chapter 20,

    Luke 20 chapter mention

  947. the scribes

  948. and the chief priests

  949. sought to lay hands

  950. on him

  951. at that very hour

  952. for they perceived

  953. that he had told

  954. this parable

  955. against them.

  956. Have you ever had

  957. somebody share a story?

  958. And you knew

  959. that they built you

  960. into that story

  961. to prove a point?

  962. You ever have that happen?

  963. I used to go

  964. to a church

  965. where the pastor

  966. would often

  967. share little stories

  968. and you wonder,

  969. okay,

  970. I wonder who he

  971. talked to this week.

  972. I wonder who

  973. that was about.

  974. And that's what

  975. Jesus is doing here,

  976. by the way.

  977. Jesus is telling

  978. this story

  979. and as Jesus,

  980. as this story

  981. is unfolding,

  982. these scribes

  983. and these Pharisees

  984. know exactly

  985. who he's talking about.

  986. And so their response

  987. is surely not,

  988. which was different

  989. from the obvious response

  990. of what the crowd says,

  991. he's going to kill

  992. those wretches.

  993. He's going to turn this over

  994. to a new group of tenants.

  995. That's the obvious answer.

  996. And in this response,

  997. surely not,

  998. this is the strongest negative

  999. in the Greek language.

  1000. Certainly not.

  1001. This cannot happen.

  1002. They reject

  1003. the parable

  1004. and the parable giver,

  1005. his authority to teach,

  1006. his authority

  1007. to claim

  1008. this instructional

  1009. authority over them.

  1010. And this emphatic

  1011. rejection

  1012. from this religious group

  1013. now turns

  1014. into this final response

  1015. we find from Jesus

  1016. in verses 17 to 18

  1017. where the son

  1018. becomes a stone.

  1019. Jesus is

  1020. the stone.

  1021. He's the stone.

  1022. Notice

  1023. verse 17.

  1024. He looked directly

  1025. at them.

  1026. Their response,

  1027. certainly not.

  1028. Jesus looks at them.

  1029. You can see

  1030. this look of intensity.

  1031. You can see

  1032. this look of authority.

  1033. You can see

  1034. this look of urgency.

  1035. Jesus wants

  1036. to get the message

  1037. through

  1038. because if they don't

  1039. get this message,

  1040. they're not going

  1041. to be getting anything.

  1042. He says,

  1043. what then

  1044. is this

  1045. that is written?

  1046. The stone

  1047. that the builders

  1048. rejected

  1049. has become

  1050. the cornerstone.

  1051. Everyone who falls

  1052. on that stone

  1053. will be broken

  1054. to pieces

  1055. and when it

  1056. falls on anyone,

  1057. it will crush them.

  1058. Jesus is

  1059. creating this

  1060. strong rebuke

  1061. and warning

  1062. for this group

  1063. of religious leaders.

  1064. This inescapable

  1065. reality

  1066. of the son's

  1067. presence

  1068. who is here.

  1069. And Jesus

  1070. will use

  1071. and draw

  1072. this verse

  1073. out of Psalm 118

    Psalms 118:22

  1074. verses 22

  1075. and 23

  1076. which says,

  1077. the stone

  1078. that the builders

  1079. rejected

  1080. has become

  1081. the cornerstone.

  1082. This is the Lord's

  1083. doing.

  1084. It is marvelous

  1085. in our eyes.

  1086. And what's fascinating

  1087. about the Hebrew

  1088. of this verse

  1089. is the word stone

  1090. is the word eben.

  1091. The word son

  1092. is the word ben.

  1093. like Benjamin.

  1094. It's a play on words

  1095. I really believe

  1096. where Jesus

  1097. as the son

  1098. as ben the son

  1099. is helping them

  1100. understand

  1101. he's also the stone

  1102. of ben.

  1103. He's the one

  1104. who will crush them.

  1105. He's the stone

  1106. who will come

  1107. and ultimately

  1108. be the force

  1109. that destroys them

  1110. if they continue

  1111. to reject.

  1112. Jesus wants them

  1113. to understand

  1114. the seriousness

  1115. of the decisions

  1116. that they're making.

  1117. And interestingly

  1118. he draws this

  1119. out of Psalm 118

  1120. which had just

  1121. been spoken

  1122. two days before

  1123. in his triumphal entry.

  1124. In Psalm 118

  1125. notice in verse 26

  1126. it says

  1127. blessed is he

  1128. who comes

  1129. in the name

  1130. of the Lord.

  1131. We have blessed you

  1132. from the house

  1133. of the Lord.

  1134. This verse

  1135. that comes

  1136. after the stone

  1137. that the builders

  1138. rejected.

  1139. Jesus I believe

  1140. is trying to help

  1141. realign

  1142. and reassemble

  1143. this chronology

  1144. in the minds

  1145. of the hearers

  1146. so they understand

  1147. the stone

  1148. will first

  1149. be rejected

  1150. before the stone

  1151. will ever come

  1152. in triumph.

  1153. Similar to what

  1154. we find

  1155. in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1:10

  1156. chapter 1

  1157. verses 10

  1158. and 11

  1159. concerning the salvation

  1160. the prophets

  1161. who prophesied

  1162. about the grace

1163. that was to be yours

  1164. searched inquired

  1165. carefully inquiring

  1166. what person

  1167. or time

  1168. the spirit

  1169. of Christ

  1170. in them

  1171. was indicating

  1172. when he predicted

  1173. the sufferings

  1174. of Christ

  1175. and the subsequent

  1176. glories.

  1177. The suffering

  1178. would come first

  1179. the rejection

  1180. would come first

  1181. and then the conquering

  1182. then the victory

  1183. then the triumph.

  1184. Jesus is trying

  1185. to help them

  1186. understand

  1187. he is the son

  1188. but he's also

  1189. this stone.

  1190. The implications

  1191. of course

  1192. are inescapable

  1193. and this has been

  1194. taken

  1195. a couple

  1196. of different ways

  1197. but I think

  1198. it's best to see

  1199. that both

  1200. the stumbling

  1201. on the stone

  1202. and the falling

  1203. of the stone

1204. refer to the same thing

  1205. and that is

  1206. the rejection

  1207. of the stone.

  1208. The stone

  1209. that the builders

  1210. rejected

  1211. and then Jesus

  1212. phrases it

  1213. in this way

  1214. about stumbling

  1215. on the stone

  1216. you'll be broken

  1217. to pieces

  1218. and the stone

  1219. falling on you

  1220. you'll be crushed

  1221. to pieces.

  1222. Both this active

  1223. and passive

  1224. rejection

  1225. rejection

  1226. of Christ

  1227. the stone

  1228. the stone

  1229. both an active

  1230. and passive

  1231. rejection

  1232. of the stone

  1233. will lead

  1234. to destruction.

  1235. You will either

  1236. be broken

  1237. into pieces

  1238. by falling

  1239. onto the stone

  1240. or you'll be

  1241. crushed to pieces

  1242. by the stone

  1243. falling on you.

  1244. In both cases

  1245. there is rejection.

  1246. In both cases

  1247. there is

  1248. destruction.

  1249. This crushing

  1250. stone

  1251. of course

  1252. I believe

  1253. is also

  1254. drawn out

  1255. and symbolized

  1256. for us

  1257. in Daniel

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  1258. chapter 2

  1259. the dream

  1260. of Nebuchadnezzar

  1261. and you remember

  1262. that it was Daniel

  1263. who talked about

  1264. Jesus

  1265. the son of man

  1266. who is seated

  1267. on his throne

  1268. and Jesus

  1269. has just

  1270. drawn that out

  1271. and applied that

  1272. to himself

  1273. in this march

  1274. up from Jericho

  1275. to Jerusalem

1276. he's the son of man

  1277. and now

  1278. we find

  1279. this stone

  1280. that's pictured

  1281. here

  1282. a stone

  1283. that will

  1284. break in pieces

  1285. the image

  1286. of bronze

  1287. and gold

  1288. and the nations

  1289. that they represent

  1290. and we find

  1291. that Jesus

  1292. is that stone

  1293. just as you saw

  1294. that a stone

1295. was cut from the mountain

  1296. it says

  1297. by no human hand

  1298. and that it broke

  1299. in pieces

  1300. the iron

  1301. the bronze

  1302. the clay

  1303. the silver

  1304. and the gold

  1305. a great God

  1306. has made known

  1307. to the king

  1308. what shall be

  1309. after this

  1310. the dream

  1311. is certain

  1312. and its interpretation

  1313. is sure

  1314. Jesus

  1315. son of man

  1316. is the breaking

  1317. crushing stone

  1318. submit

  1319. and yield

  1320. to the sun

  1321. to the stone

  1322. so we come

  1323. to this question

  1324. that we started with

  1325. who do you think

  1326. you are

  1327. who do you think

  1328. you are

  1329. and we all need

  1330. to ask

  1331. and answer

  1332. that question

  1333. for ourselves

  1334. is there another

  1335. solution

  1336. response to the stone

  1337. we can stumble

  1338. on the stone

  1339. the stone

  1340. can fall on us

  1341. is there another way

  1342. and I think

  1343. that is also clear

  1344. in 1 Peter chapter 2

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  1345. 1 Peter chapter 2

    1 Peter 2:4–6

  1346. verses 4 to 6

  1347. says this

  1348. as you come

  1349. to him

  1350. a living stone

  1351. rejected by men

  1352. but in the sight

  1353. of God

  1354. chosen and precious

  1355. you yourselves

  1356. like living stones

  1357. are being built up

  1358. as a spiritual house

1359. to be a holy priesthood

  1360. to offer

  1361. spiritual sacrifices

  1362. acceptable to God

  1363. through Jesus Christ

  1364. for it stands

  1365. in scripture

  1366. behold

  1367. I am laying

  1368. in Zion

  1369. a stone

  1370. a cornerstone

  1371. chosen and precious

  1372. and whoever believes

  1373. in him

  1374. will not be put

  1375. to shame

  1376. how are you responding

  1377. to the stone

  1378. the elect

  1379. and precious

  1380. and chosen

  1381. stone

  1382. the son

  1383. of God

  1384. are you

  1385. bowing

  1386. your heart

  1387. your life

  1388. your knee

  1389. to worship

  1390. the son

  1391. Jesus

  1392. have you

  1393. have you acknowledged

  1394. and confessed

  1395. your sin

  1396. have you submitted

  1397. to him

  1398. as the one

  1399. who is master

  1400. over your life

  1401. have you embraced

  1402. him as the

  1403. as the precious

  1404. stone

  1405. and then

  1406. what's

  1407. what's fascinating

  1408. about this

  1409. symbolism

  1410. that we find

  1411. in first Peter

  1412. is that

  1413. is now a

  1414. kingdom

  1415. becomes a household

  1416. a household

  1417. now

  1418. of living stones

  1419. that are assembled

  1420. together

  1421. and assembled

  1422. with Jesus

  1423. as the

  1424. living cornerstone

  1425. the chief

  1426. cornerstone

  1427. is your life

  1428. built on him

  1429. is your life

  1430. aligned to his

  1431. standards

  1432. is your life

  1433. understanding

  1434. the significance

  1435. of his

  1436. not only influence

  1437. but also

  1438. authority

  1439. over you

  1440. have you

  1441. believed in him

  1442. are you pursuing

  1443. him

  1444. are you seeking

  1445. to know

  1446. in love

  1447. in worship

  1448. in fellowship

  1449. with

  1450. the son

  1451. because this

  1452. assembled

  1453. household

  1454. is a

  1455. place

  1456. of worship

  1457. and so

  1458. as living

  1459. stones

  1460. we're being

  1461. assembled

  1462. as the

  1463. household

  1464. of God

  1465. which means

  1466. the

  1467. the

  1468. the center

  1469. of

  1470. of our

  1471. existence

  1472. is worship

  1473. and devotion

  1474. to him

  1475. is that how

  1476. you would

  1477. evaluate your

  1478. life

  1479. is it how

  1480. you would

  1481. provide a

  1482. an inventory

  1483. of this past

  1484. week

  1485. the things

  1486. that really

  1487. matter

  1488. for you

  1489. is it that

  1490. the worship

  1491. of God

  1492. and placing

  1493. him

  1494. as center

  1495. this living

  1496. stone

  1497. is that

  1498. how you can

  1499. be characterized

  1500. Jesus offers

  1501. for us

  1502. in this final

  1503. week

  1504. a

  1505. a beautiful

  1506. clear picture

  1507. of his

  1508. identity

  1509. he is

  1510. the son

  1511. he is

  1512. the stone

  1513. he is

  1514. the one

  1515. who is

  1516. sent from

  1517. heaven

  1518. so he has

  1519. all authority

  1520. but he's

  1521. also the

  1522. savior

  1523. have you

  1524. experienced

  1525. and enjoyed

  1526. the saving

  1527. power of

  1528. God

  1529. who came

  1530. to seek

  1531. and to

  1532. save

  1533. the lost

  1534. and

  1535. as those

  1536. who love

  1537. the savior

  1538. have a

  1539. mission

  1540. to make

  1541. the savior

  1542. known

  1543. may God

  1544. help us

  1545. this week

  1546. as we

  1547. grow in

  1548. our affection

  1549. for the

  1550. elect

  1551. and precious

  1552. chief

  1553. cornerstone

  1554. oh lord

  1555. we thank

  1556. you

  1557. for making

  1558. it so

  1559. clear

  1560. thank you

  1561. for your

  1562. bold

  1563. sacrificial

  1564. ministry

  1565. there in

  1566. Jerusalem

  1567. even in

  1568. this

  1569. final

  1570. week

  1571. of life

  1572. you did

  1573. not run

  1574. you did

  1575. not hide

  1576. you did

  1577. not bide

  1578. your time

  1579. out in

  1580. the outskirts

  1581. in the

  1582. the byways

  1583. and in

  1584. hills of

  1585. Jerusalem

  1586. but you

  1587. were right

  1588. in the

  1589. center

  1590. that

  1591. living

  1592. word

  1593. that

  1594. made

  1595. its

  1596. way

  1597. so

  1598. accessibly

  1599. to

  1600. your

  1601. people

  1602. and

  1603. God

  1604. I

  1605. pray

  1606. that

  1607. that

  1608. our

  1609. response

  1610. to

  1611. the

  1612. living

  1613. stone

  1614. would

  1615. not

  1616. be

  1617. to

  1618. stumble

  1619. on

  1620. it

  1621. would

  1622. not

  1623. be

  1624. for

  1625. it

  1626. to

  1627. crush

  1628. us

  1629. but

  1630. for

  1631. us

  1632. to

  1633. bow

  1634. our

  1635. hearts

  1636. before

  1637. you

  1638. to

  1639. be

  1640. broken

  1641. before

  1642. you

  1643. and

  1644. to

  1645. accept

  1646. and

  1647. receive

  1648. you

  1649. as

  1650. the

  1651. savior

  1652. to

  1653. believe

  1654. on

  1655. you

  1656. as

  1657. this

  1658. living

  1659. stone

  1660. and

  1661. may

  1662. we

  1663. as

  1664. your

  1665. people

  1666. be

  1667. characterized

  1668. by

  1669. worship

  1670. the

  1671. household

  1672. of

  1673. God

  1674. this

  1675. living

  1676. these

  1677. living

  1678. stones

  1679. together

  1680. with

  1681. purpose

  1682. of

  1683. devotion

  1684. and

  1685. worship

  1686. to

  1687. you

  1688. may

  1689. that

  1690. be

  1691. true

  1692. of

  1693. us

  1694. Lord

  1695. I

  1696. pray

  1697. in

  1698. Jesus

  1699. name

  1700. amen

  1701. God

  1702. bless

  1703. you

  1704. have

  1705. a

  1706. great

  1707. week
