  1. Well, it's good to see those of you who are here. Good job, brave in the snow. It's great to have you here and I trust and be praying that God takes you home safe.

  2. We find ourselves this morning in Luke chapter 20. We're going to be picking this up in verse 41 and it's going to take us to Luke chapter 21 verse 4.

Luke 20 chapter mention Luke 21:4

  3. Just to set some context for where we are, we've been spending some time kind of looking through this final week of Jesus' life and ministry.

  4. This is the Passion Week. We picked it up on a Friday as Jesus is making his way into Jericho and the interaction that he has with the blind men that are there,

  5. the interaction that he has with Zacchaeus and then that group of individuals are making their way up to Jerusalem on a Saturday.

  6. And then on a Sunday, Jesus is making his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. And then we find ourselves on Monday that Jesus is cleansing the temple.

  7. And then on Tuesday and Wednesday, he's teaching. He's made it a point to address these crowds. He's made it a point to extend to them the grace of God through the Word of God.

  8. But just for a moment, with me marvel at the wonder of God's kindness to continue to make himself accessible to the very people that were going to kill him on Friday.

  9. Here he is extending his very person. He's accessible. He's near. He's available for their questions.

  10. He's fielding the criticism of these religious leaders. He's instructing them from the Scriptures.

  11. He's extending himself an invitation, trying to make the truth of the Word of God clear to them so they will hear it.

  12. They will receive it and they'll know without a shadow of a doubt who he is.

  13. His identity is clear through these final days of his life.

  14. And we find again the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ extending himself again to these individuals again here at the temple.

  15. And we find these many facets this morning of God's grace.

  16. Three little stories, three little pieces, snippets of this day.

  17. And it doesn't seem apparent at first what is really going on and how these pieces connect together.

  18. But that God is extending his goodness, his grace to those who are there.

  19. And that's what I want to just kind of draw your attention to this morning.

  20. The different facets, the different aspects of God's kindness to various individuals that he encounters here on this day here in the temple.

  21. I wonder if maybe you've ever asked yourself the question,

  22. How did I miss that?

  23. You ever ask yourself the question, How did I miss that?

  24. It was so obvious. It was so clear.

  25. And I missed it. How did I miss it?

  26. And maybe you were putting together a piece of furniture.

  27. Or maybe you were trying to fix your car.

  28. Or maybe something that required some instructions and a recipe.

  29. And it just didn't turn out the way it was supposed to turn out.

  30. And you look back at the instructions like, What did I miss?

  31. How did I miss that?

  32. And you look at those instructions and there it was in bold.

  33. And it was numbered. It was clear.

  34. And somehow it escaped your attention.

  35. Well, I had an experience like that several years ago when I was in my first year at seminary.

  36. I was in a hermeneutics class.

  37. And hermeneutics just basically is a study of interpretation.

  38. Interpreting the Bible.

  39. And my professor had kind of built up.

  40. There were two assignments.

  41. Two main papers that were due.

  42. One at the middle and one at the end of the semester.

  43. And he built these papers up to be,

  44. If you don't do well on this paper, you should not be a pastor.

  45. I go, Wow, this is really important.

  46. I got to get this right.

  47. I got to work hard.

  48. I got to follow the instructions.

  49. And so I worked on this for weeks.

  50. I poured my heart and life into this paper.

  51. And there were two sections of instructions on how to do this.

  52. One at the beginning of the syllabus.

  53. And one towards the end of the instructions section.

  54. And so I read those instructions.

  55. I followed them to the T.

  56. I had the right length.

  57. I had the right content.

  58. I had the right number of scholarly sources.

  59. I used the right number of interpretive elements.

  60. I had the right format.

  61. I turned it in on time.

  62. And to my surprise and utter dismay,

  63. I got the paper back, D minus.

  64. D minus!

  65. What in the world was I missing?

  66. So I called the professor.

  67. And we talked it through.

  68. And come to find out there was a formatting issue.

  69. Everything was intact.

  70. All of the things were in place.

  71. It was a formatting issue.

  72. And because of a formatting issue,

  73. I got a D minus.

  74. I'm like, well, where were the instructions for that?

  75. And so going back in the day, the early 2000s,

  76. the syllabuses did not come out electronically.

  77. You got a physical copy of that syllabus.

  78. And it was printed by the library.

  79. And I received my syllabus.

  80. And come to find out, I was missing a page.

  81. A page of my syllabus was missing from the library that printed this for me.

  82. And I could not know because it was at the end of a section that went from myrman numerals to enumeration.

  83. One, two, three, four, five.

  84. Now just because the instructions were not captured for me in my copy of the syllabus,

  85. I was still responsible for the standards, the expectations of the paper.

  86. And so while it may seem to be impossible for me to meet the expectations

  87. because they were hidden from me,

  88. it didn't mean that those expectations were still not in place.

  89. And I was still accountable for them.

  90. And while it seemed unfair because those instructions were hidden,

  91. I was still accountable to meet the expectations that were written.

  92. God, in this final week, is making the instructions clear.

  93. God, by His grace, is extending truth.

  94. And throughout His ministry, He's made it so clear, so evident, so obvious.

  95. And the testimony of Scripture is that it's a testimony of God giving us everything that we need,

  96. as 2 Peter says, for life and godliness.

  97. All the instructions are there.

  98. All the words, all the truths, nothing is hidden from view.

  99. It's all available.

  100. It's all accessible.

  101. The question is, will you read it?

  102. Will you know it?

  103. But we also need to realize that just because the truths are shared,

  104. just like they were from Christ's ministry,

  105. through the teaching of His words and through the evidence of His works,

  106. His miracles,

  107. it was still hidden from view from these religious leaders,

  108. and it was still hidden from view from many of those who were listening and watching Christ as He taught.

  109. You see, even though we have access to truth,

  110. we can still miss it.

  111. We can still miss it because we need the Spirit to help inform our hearts

  112. and to bring the blinders down, as it were,

  113. and to reveal in us the truths that only the Spirit can reveal.

  114. Paul says to the church of Corinth in 1 Corinthians 2, verses 13 and 14,

    1 Corinthians 2:13

  115. he's communicating this when he says,

  116. and we impart this in words.

  117. He's speaking about the gospel.

  118. Not taught by human wisdom, but taught by the Spirit.

  119. Interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

  120. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God,

  121. for they are folly to him.

  122. And he is not able to understand them

  123. because they are spiritually discerned.

  124. So even this morning, as we enter our time of looking into the Word of God,

  125. the only way for the Word of God to have its impact in our life

  126. is for the Spirit to do His work.

  127. His truth, however accessible, however clear, however direct,

  128. in order for it to have its way in your heart, you need the Spirit.

  129. I'm just going to pray briefly that God will do this for us.

  130. We're going to invite the Holy Spirit to have His way

  131. as we work through this passage together.

  132. Lord, thank you that you've made your Word clear.

  133. Thank you that it's direct and accessible.

  134. But, oh Lord, we understand that even in what seems a very simple task,

  135. that we need the help of your Holy Spirit,

  136. because natural men cannot receive the things of the Spirit of God,

  137. their foolishness to us,

  138. unless we have the help of your Spirit directing, informing,

  139. convicting, and helping us as we seek to know what you say.

  140. So, Father, I pray that you would graciously meet us,

  141. even in these moments,

  142. as we dive into the Scriptures.

  143. I pray that we would not just be hearers of the Word,

  144. but doers of it.

  145. In Jesus' name, amen.

  146. We're going to see three different aspects of God's grace

  147. through Jesus Christ,

  148. these gifts that He is imparting to those listeners here at the temple.

  149. The first is the gift of God's Word.

  150. The gift of God's Word.

  151. We see that in verses 41 to 44.

  152. Notice with me.

  153. By the way, we're in Luke chapter 20.

    Luke 20 chapter mention

  154. If you're using the Pew Bible,

  155. it's on page 880.

  156. I trust you're following along with us.

  157. It says this.

  158. This is Jesus.

  159. He said to them,

  160. How can they say that the Christ is David's son?

  161. For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

  162. The Lord said to my Lord,

  163. Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.

  164. David thus calls him Lord.

  165. So, how is He his son?

  166. The question may seem a little out of place.

  167. If you're kind of following along with us,

  168. and you've been with us along these several weeks,

  169. you'll realize that Jesus has been answering some questions.

  170. We saw that last week.

  171. He answered some questions of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  172. To the Pharisees who asked Him about the coin.

  173. Should we pay taxes to Caesar, right?

  174. And in Luke chapter 20 verse 25,

    Luke 20:25

  175. He says,

  176. Give to God the things that are God.

  177. Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's.

  178. And then for those Sadducees who asked Him a question about the resurrection,

  179. the thrust or the focus of Jesus' answer is found in verse 38.

  180. He says,

  181. It's a question of belonging.

  182. It's a question of what are you living for?

  183. It's a question of value and treasure.

  184. Where is the direction of your life?

  185. What is the focus of your priorities?

  186. Where is your life driving to in the present moment?

  187. And where will it end up in the future day?

  188. And now this question that Jesus asks about the identity of the Christ,

  189. is He the Son of David?

  190. It almost seems out of place.

  191. But I think this is what's going on here.

  192. Jesus is giving the gift of truth.

  193. Jesus is seeking to help pull down the last two obstacles that the scribes and the Pharisees

  194. and the Sadducees have about the identity of Jesus.

  195. He is speaking to these individuals who are the elite thinkers in Jerusalem.

  196. He's making them really look silly, as it were,

  197. by answering their questions and doing it right in the midst of the people.

  198. So now Jesus is taking the initiative.

  199. He's silenced the chief priests.

  200. He's silenced the Sadducees.

  201. And now He's taking the initiative to ask them a question.

  202. He's speaking to the heart of the issue.

  203. What is the core of their inability in believing in Jesus?

  204. It was His claim to be God.

  205. That's what's at the heart of their problem,

  206. their issue that they're struggling with.

  207. You see, this had been their question throughout His public ministry.

  208. It really came to a head,

  209. and we see it really front and center in John chapter 6, verses 41 and 42.

    John 6:41

  210. The Jews grumbled about Him because He said,

  211. I am the bread that came down from heaven.

  212. They said, is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph,

  213. whose father and mother we know?

  214. How does He now say,

  215. I have come down from heaven?

  216. You can appreciate the struggle.

  217. I think all of us who have a theological underpinning,

  218. we can recognize that there are some things that Jesus was saying

  219. that seem so out of place.

  220. God is eternal after all.

  221. God is not born.

  222. God has no beginning or end.

  223. And if Jesus was born,

  224. and Jesus is from Joseph,

  225. then how can He be from heaven?

  226. Add to that the clear teaching of the Old Testament,

  227. that God is one.

  228. And in the Shema,

  229. this part of the Scripture

  230. that was built into the knowledge

  231. and the fabric of Judaism,

  232. in Deuteronomy chapter 6, 4 and 5.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  233. Hear, O Israel,

  234. the Lord our God,

  235. the Lord is one.

  236. You shall love the Lord your God

  237. with all your heart,

  238. with all your soul,

  239. with all your might.

  240. And here Jesus is making Himself

  241. to be equal with God.

  242. Jesus is saying He's from heaven.

  243. How can it be that God is one

  244. and that now Jesus claims to be God,

  245. but He's speaking of coming from a Father?

  246. John chapter 10, verses 33,

    John 10:33

  247. kind of brings this to the forefront.

  248. The Jews answered Him,

  249. It is not for a good work

  250. that we're going to stone you,

  251. but for blasphemy,

  252. because you being a man,

  253. make yourself God.

  254. That, of course, was the problem.

  255. So we've got to appreciate the struggle

  256. that these religious thinkers were having.

  257. Those who were entrusted

  258. with the doctrines of the people

  259. and seeking to help,

  260. to guide them in correct theology.

  261. And this concept of Jesus coming from heaven,

  262. that He was also born,

  263. and that He was equal with the Father,

  264. it broke every piece of their doctrine.

  265. It made their mind hurt.

  266. They couldn't wrap their heads

  267. around how this was even possible.

  268. So Jesus,

  269. with a desire to overcome this obstacle,

  270. uses the gift of Scripture.

  271. He uses the Word of God.

  272. The very Word, by the way,

  273. that they had attached

  274. to messianic fulfillment,

  275. fulfillment,

  276. Jesus is going to use

  277. that verse,

  278. He's going to apply it

  279. to this situation,

  280. and He's going to make it

  281. so clear to them

  282. that they,

  283. at this point,

  284. never ask Him a question again.

  285. Because they know the answer.

  286. The answer is clear,

  287. and yet it just shatters.

  288. It shatters everything

  289. about their theology.

  290. Jesus pulls from Psalm 110,

  291. and He deals with both

  292. of these theological issues simultaneously.

  293. First, He deals with this issue

  294. of monotheism,

  295. which of course the Lord is one,

  296. and that is not disputed here,

  297. but Jesus is trying to help them

  298. get their heads around the fact

  299. that while God is one,

  300. there is this triune nature of God,

  301. these persons of God,

  302. the Father, the Son,

  303. the Holy Spirit,

  304. that they had no concept of.

  305. And yet here it is,

  306. in Psalm 110.

  307. Here is this truth

  308. that is clear.

  309. It's unmistakable.

  310. And in this Psalm,

  311. it begins with,

  312. the Lord said to my Lord,

  313. sit at my right hand.

  314. And this first word for Lord,

  315. we're not ready for this slide,

  316. by the way.

  317. This first word for Lord

  318. is the word Yahweh.

  319. It's the word that's used

  320. throughout the Old Testament

  321. to speak of God

  322. as the covenant keeper,

  323. the God who's preeminent

  324. over His people.

  325. And then this Lord,

  326. Yahweh,

  327. is speaking to a Lord

  328. who the word is Adonai.

  329. It's the word for master.

  330. And here we find both names

  331. that are present.

  332. Both clearly represent God.

  333. Because God says to the Lord,

  334. sit at my right hand

  335. until I make your enemies

  336. your footstool.

  337. This right hand was a hand of power,

  338. a hand of authority.

  339. I'm going to make your enemies

  340. your footstool,

  341. which means I'm going to give you

  342. this honor.

  343. I'm going to allow you

  344. to exercise power,

  345. which of course is a right

  346. that's only reserved to God

  347. and God alone.

  348. This truth would have dismantled

  349. their conventional thinking

  350. about God.

  351. Yes, God was one.

  352. But He was one God

  353. represented in this way

  354. of Yahweh speaking to the Lord.

  355. Somehow,

  356. the persons of this Trinity

  357. even show up here

  358. in Psalm 110.1.

  359. And so,

  360. because He was this way,

  361. He existed

  362. from before the foundation

  363. of the world.

  364. He possessed the same essence,

  365. the exercise,

  366. the same power.

  367. And we see

  368. at least a glimpse

  369. of this captured for us

  370. in Psalm 110.1.

  371. So,

  372. it deals with their concept

  373. of the oneness of God,

  374. but also deals with

  375. the issue of headship

  376. and authority.

  377. Inherent in the Jewish mind

  378. was that the Father

  379. was the head of the family.

  380. And as the head of the family,

  381. He was preeminent.

  382. He was the ultimate.

  383. He was the most important.

  384. And so,

  385. sons would call

  386. their father Lord.

  387. Fathers would not call

  388. their sons Lord.

  389. And yet,

  390. that is exactly

  391. what is happening

  392. here in our text.

  393. This was an issue

  394. of succession

  395. in the mind

  396. of the Jew.

  397. That those who

  398. came from the head

  399. then served the head.

  400. They were the ones

  401. who carried on

  402. the name of the head

  403. and served the purposes

  404. of the head.

  405. And so,

  406. everything traced back

  407. to that starting point.

  408. We see

  409. in the religious leader's

  410. question

  411. of Jesus

  412. six months earlier,

  413. the same kind

  414. of question

  415. that comes up

  416. in John 8,

    John 8:53

  417. verse 53.

  418. Are you greater

  419. than our father Abraham

  420. who died?

  421. Speaking all the way

  422. to the beginning

  423. of the people,

  424. Abraham,

  425. which was kind

  426. of the preeminent figure

  427. of this people,

  428. this nation.

  429. So,

  430. who is this Lord

  431. in Psalm 110?

  432. Well,

  433. of course,

  434. he is the Christ,

  435. the Messiah.

  436. And we see

  437. the traces of that

  438. in the rest of this psalm,

  439. particularly in Psalm 110,

    Psalms 110:2

  440. verse 2,

  441. in Psalm 10,

    Psalms 10:5

  442. verse 5.

  443. It speaks about

  444. what the Lord will do.

  445. The Lord sends forth

  446. from Zion,

  447. your mighty scepter.

  448. Rule in the midst

  449. of all your enemies.

  450. The Lord is at your right hand.

  451. He will shatter kings

  452. on the day of his wrath.

  453. This was the fulfillment

  454. of the promise

  455. that had been given

  456. to David

  457. about his future son,

  458. this Messiah,

  459. this Christ figure.

  460. And the Pharisees

  461. and scribes

  462. and chief priests

  463. who were all present

  464. understood

  465. this very truth.

  466. So,

  467. they're not providing

  468. any pushback,

  469. any resistance,

  470. because Jesus

  471. is speaking in a way

  472. that they agree.

  473. They know this is speaking

  474. of this messianic figure,

  475. but they had never

  476. conceived of the fact

  477. that David is referring

  478. to him as

  479. my Lord.

  480. He's my Lord

  481. as David is writing

  482. this psalm.

  483. Connection is this,

  484. that while the fulfillment

  485. of this psalm

  486. is messianic,

  487. it speaks here

  488. of Christ,

  489. the Messiah,

  490. who is presented

  491. both as David's son

  492. and as David's Lord.

  493. Thus,

  494. he's fully God

  495. and fully man,

  496. a concept which would

  497. have broken

  498. their theology.

  499. It was mind-blowing.

  500. It broke

  501. the way

  502. they viewed God,

  503. but because

  504. of their hearts

  505. were unwilling

  506. to be teachable,

  507. they could not receive

  508. the truth

  509. that Jesus

  510. was sharing.

  511. Jesus graciously

  512. offers them

  513. the gift of the Scripture,

  514. the very Scriptures

  515. they even knew

  516. and embraced,

  517. and yet they still

  518. could not receive it.

  519. Aren't we so much

  520. like the Pharisees

  521. at times?

  522. That God has graciously

  523. given us his Word,

  524. that his instructions

  525. are clear to us.

  526. They're not hidden,

  527. they're not missing,

  528. they're not too sophisticated,

  529. they're written

  530. in simple language.

  531. He's given us

  532. everything that we need

  533. for life and godliness,

  534. but in order to enjoy

  535. this gift of God's Word,

  536. there are three things

  537. that need to be true.

  538. First, we need to be

  539. those who are in the Word.

  540. We need to be those

  541. who are in the Word,

  542. reading the Word,

  543. listening to the Word,

  544. studying the Word,

  545. meditating on the Word,

  546. as the psalmist says,

  547. day and night.

  548. And then you'll be like

  549. a tree that's planted

  550. by rivers of water.

  551. Be those who see

  552. the Word of God

  553. as David did,

  554. more precious than gold.

  555. The kind of Word

  556. that is sweeter

  557. than honey in the honeycomb.

  558. We need to be those,

  559. first of all,

  560. who are in the Word of God

  561. and receive this gift

  562. of God's grace.

  563. Do you realize

  564. that you can have

  565. as much of God's grace

  566. as you want?

  567. Just open up the book.

  568. Read the Word.

  569. Enjoy the grace

  570. that God has given to you.

  571. He's entrusted to you.

  572. He's dispensed to you

  573. through the Scriptures.

  574. But second,

  575. we need to be those

  576. who ask God for help

  577. in understanding the Word.

  578. Those who ask the Spirit

  579. to do the work

  580. of informing our hearts.

  581. 1 John 2, verse 27 says,

    1 John 2:27

  582. but the anointing

  583. that you receive from Him,

  584. it abides in you.

  585. And you need,

  586. not that anyone should teach you,

  587. but as His anointing teaches you

  588. about everything

  589. and is true

  590. and is no lie,

  591. just as it has taught you,

  592. you abide in Him.

  593. This is speaking of the Spirit.

  594. The Spirit's work

  595. in the heart

  596. of every true believer

  597. to make His Word clear,

  598. to apply it to your life,

  599. to take those truths

  600. and to sift through them,

  601. to make them available to you

  602. so that you know

  603. what He's saying

  604. and you can apply it

  605. to your life.

  606. And that's the third thing.

  607. Not just reading,

  608. not just asking for help,

  609. but obeying it.

  610. We see that in James,

    James 1:22

  611. chapter 1, verse 22.

  612. Be doers of the Word

  613. and not hearers only,

  614. deceiving yourselves.

  615. Allow the Word,

  616. this gift of God's grace,

  617. allow it to not only

  618. inform your heart,

  619. but allow it to change your life.

  620. This gift of God's grace

  621. extended through His Word

  622. and here Jesus is,

  623. a couple of days away

  624. from His crucifixion,

  625. continuing to extend

  626. this gift of grace

  627. through His Word.

  628. And now Jesus

  629. will transition

  630. from this teaching moment

  631. to a warning moment.

  632. And that's where we get

  633. to the next gift,

  634. this gift of God's warning.

  635. Not just of His Word,

  636. but of His warning.

  637. And God throughout

  638. the Scriptures

  639. has graciously warned us

  640. about the things

  641. that He wants to keep us from,

  642. those things that are going

  643. to hurt us,

  644. and He's warned us

  645. to stay away

  646. from those individuals

  647. who will shipwreck our faith.

  648. That's what He's doing here

  649. in verses 20,

  650. or chapter 20,

  651. verses 45 to 47.

  652. It says,

  653. in the hearing of all the people,

  654. He said to His disciples.

  655. So now Jesus is turning

  656. His attention to His disciples.

  657. He wants them to recognize

  658. that the Word that is coming

  659. now is a Word that's going

  660. to help inform their understanding.

  661. He says this,

  662. Beware of the scribes

  663. who like to walk around

  664. in long robes

  665. and love greetings

  666. in the marketplace

  667. and the best seats

  668. in the synagogue

  669. and the places of honor

  670. at the feasts,

  671. who devour widows' houses

  672. and for a pretense

  673. make long prayers.

  674. They will receive

  675. the greater condemnation.

  676. This warning

  677. that God is now giving

  678. to future leaders,

  679. to His apostles,

  680. those who are going

  681. to help lay the foundation

  682. for this church,

  683. this new church age.

  684. And they're going

  685. to take the place

  686. of these religious leaders

  687. who have been entrusted

  688. with that responsibility

  689. here in the first century,

  690. who are unfaithful

  691. with the task.

  692. And now Jesus

  693. is warning His disciples

  694. of the kinds of leaders

  695. they need to be.

  696. Jesus addresses

  697. this telltale sign

  698. of ineffective,

  699. false leaders.

  700. and it narrows in

  701. on one thing,

  702. their pride.

  703. We see their pride

  704. throughout each

  705. of these six characteristics.

  706. They're drawing attention

  707. to themselves.

  708. They love their popularity.

  709. They seek the most

  710. prominent places.

  711. They serve their own purposes

  712. regardless of who

  713. they hurt in the process.

  714. They flaunt their spirituality

  715. through their long prayers.

  716. They, in one word,

  717. are proud.

  718. They only care about themselves.

  719. It's a dangerous trap.

  720. This self-affirming trap

  721. that Jesus identifies

  722. as a clear flag

  723. of false teachers.

  724. We find these six characteristics here.

  725. They walk around

  726. in long robes.

  727. These long, flowing robes

  728. were part of their fancy,

  729. expensive wardrobe.

  730. It was meant to

  731. kind of set them apart

  732. to distinguish themselves.

  733. Kind of like the

  734. coat of many colors

  735. distinguished Joseph

  736. from his brothers.

  737. These long, flowing robes

  738. that they wore

  739. wherever they walked.

  740. They're like,

  741. oh, there's a rabbi.

  742. There's so-and-so.

  743. There's the Pharisee.

  744. There's the religious guy.

  745. And these long, flowing robes

  746. also had tassels

  747. at the bottom.

  748. These tassels

  749. were extra long

  750. to show their own spirituality,

  751. to boast about

  752. their closeness

  753. and proximity to God.

  754. They also love

  755. these greetings

  756. in the marketplace.

  757. They love to be addressed

  758. in public.

  759. They love when people

  760. notice them.

  761. They love to be called

  762. the teacher,

  763. the rabbi.

  764. They also love

  765. the best seats

  766. in the synagogue.

  767. Those seats that were up close.

  768. Those seats that were prominent.

  769. Those seats that

  770. distinguish them

  771. from the rest.

  772. They wanted to be

  773. the center of attention.

  774. This position of distinction.

  775. And then they also love

  776. these places of honor

  777. at the feast.

  778. They wanted to be invited

  779. and they wanted

  780. the best place

  781. at the table,

  782. which was the spot

  783. that was closest

  784. to the host.

  785. They wanted to be honored.

  786. It's the right-hand man.

  787. But then this.

  788. They devour

  789. widows' houses.

  790. This word for devour

  791. is a Greek word.

  792. It's an intense

  793. Greek word that calls

  794. attention to eating

  795. or consuming

  796. or devouring completely.

  797. They're taking advantage

  798. of the weakest

  799. individual among them.

  800. They're going to do

  801. whatever it takes

  802. to line their own pockets

  803. to serve themselves.

  804. The temple authorities

  805. were those who managed

  806. the property of widows.

  807. Those who were

  808. widowed would then

  809. entrust their property

  810. to these managers

  811. and those authorities,

  812. those temple authorities

  813. would then take advantage

  814. by charging exorbitant fees.

  815. Pharisees didn't care.

  816. It was a way for them

  817. to collect on their position.

  818. They felt that they were

  819. worthy of such payment.

  820. And finally,

  821. they make long prayers.

  822. The idea is that the scribes

  823. give the appearance

  824. of piety,

  825. but they're not actually pious.

  826. And you remember

  827. the parable

  828. of the tax collector

  829. and the Pharisee

  830. who's praying in the temple.

  831. And what does he do?

  832. Well, he's praying in public

  833. and he lifts up his arms

  834. and he says,

  835. thank you that I'm not like

  836. that guy over there.

  837. He wants to draw attention

  838. to how prominent

  839. and spiritual he is.

  840. But in all of his efforts

  841. to demonstrate his spirituality,

  842. it's actually having

  843. the opposite effect.

  844. And that's what Jesus

  845. wants to warn

  846. his disciples about.

  847. Humility,

  848. not pride,

  849. needs to be the focus,

  850. the center

  851. of a person

  852. who loves the Lord.

  853. And Jesus has consistently

  854. confronted these religious leaders

  855. for these various issues.

  856. Pride and their self-centeredness

  857. should be the flashing signs

  858. and neon lights

  859. that help us to see

  860. the warning signs

  861. from God stay away.

  862. Do not listen.

  863. These false teachers

  864. are the same in every age.

  865. Always accompanied by

  866. this striving for financial gain

  867. that we see in them.

  868. Like your best life now.

  869. Send in $100

  870. and you'll begin the seed

  871. of having more for yourself.

  872. God will multiply it.

  873. God doesn't work that way.

  874. But you wouldn't know that

  875. from these false teachers

  876. who are just interested

  877. in their own success,

  878. their own prominence.

  879. How do we protect ourselves

  880. from this?

  881. Well, one word.

  882. The word humility.

  883. Paul says in Philippians 2,

    Philippians 2:3–7

  884. verses 3 to 7,

  885. he helps those who are

  886. seeking to grow

  887. in Christ's likeness

  888. to wear and to embrace

  889. the identity of Christ

  890. in the example of Christ

  891. in this way.

  892. Do nothing from selfish ambition

  893. or conceit,

  894. but in humility.

  895. Count others more significant

  896. than yourselves.

  897. Let each of you

  898. not look to his own interests,

  899. but also to the interests

  900. of others.

  901. Have this mind among yourselves,

  902. which is in yours

  903. in Christ Jesus,

  904. who, though he was

  905. in the form of God,

  906. did not count equality

  907. with God a thing

  908. to be grasped,

  909. but emptied himself,

  910. taking the form

  911. of a servant,

  912. being born in the likeness

  913. of men.

  914. Embrace the task,

  915. the privilege of humility.

  916. Serve the people

  917. that God has put you

  918. in company with.

  919. Learn to sacrifice

  920. the things that are

  921. important to you

  922. for the sake

  923. of laying it down

  924. and showing

  925. this Christ-like preference

  926. for others.

  927. Work in the way

  928. of growing in humility

  929. because God

  930. opposes the proud,

  931. but gives grace

  932. to the humble.

  933. That picture

  934. of God's acceptance,

  935. that picture

  936. of God's favor,

  937. the humility

  938. that is accompanied

  939. with the presence

  940. of God,

  941. that's really

  942. what we want.

  943. More than anything

  944. is God's presence,

  945. this gift,

  946. this gift of God's presence.

  947. And here,

  948. Christ is giving

  949. this warning,

  950. this warning,

  951. which was a gift

  952. to these disciples.

  953. And finally,

  954. in chapter 21,

  955. verses 1-4,

  956. we see the gift

  957. of God's watchfulness.

  958. The gift

  959. of God's watchfulness.

  960. Chapter 21,

  961. verses 1-4,

  962. it says,

  963. Jesus looked,

  964. he looked up,

  965. he saw the rich men

  966. putting their gifts

  967. into the offering box,

  968. and he saw

  969. a poor widow

  970. put in two small

  971. copper coins.

  972. And he said,

  973. truly I tell you,

  974. this poor widow

  975. has put in more

  976. than all the others,

  977. or all of them,

  978. for they all contributed

  979. out of their abundance,

  980. but she,

  981. out of her poverty,

  982. put in all

  983. she had

  984. to live on.

  985. Notice that Jesus

  986. looked up.

  987. Jesus saw the rich,

  988. Jesus saw the poor

  989. widow.

  990. it doesn't escape

  991. his attention.

  992. He's alert,

  993. he's aware,

  994. he's watchful,

  995. he's attentive,

  996. he sees,

  997. he knows,

  998. he cares.

  999. There is no detail

  1000. that's hidden

  1001. from the grasp

  1002. or the view

  1003. of our Savior.

  1004. In this moment,

  1005. as Jesus is talking

  1006. about the activities

  1007. and the warnings

  1008. of those religious leaders

  1009. who devour

  1010. widows' houses,

  1011. and in that moment,

  1012. as Jesus looks up,

  1013. he's in the midst

  1014. of teaching,

  1015. all of a sudden,

  1016. this widow woman

  1017. walks in.

  1018. Do you think

  1019. that's a coincidence?

  1020. No way.

  1021. No way.

  1022. Now she becomes

  1023. this object lesson

  1024. of all that Jesus

  1025. has been teaching

  1026. up to this point

  1027. here in the temple.

  1028. This warning

  1029. has been given,

1030. and now this object lesson

  1031. unfolds

  1032. in that very moment.

  1033. We find that

  1034. they're opposite

  1035. the treasury.

  1036. We find that

  1037. from Mark's account

  1038. in Mark 12,

    Mark 12:41

  1039. verse 41.

  1040. It says,

  1041. he sat down

  1042. opposite the treasury

  1043. and watched the people

  1044. putting money

  1045. into the offering box.

  1046. Many rich people

  1047. put in large sums.

  1048. This treasury

  1049. was in the court

  1050. of women.

1051. And here in this court,

  1052. there were 13

  1053. trumpet-shaped

  1054. kind of receptacles

  1055. where money

  1056. would be poured in

  1057. and you could hear

  1058. this money,

1059. kind of like a big funnel

  1060. as it were,

  1061. and they would pour

  1062. in this money

  1063. and you'd hear

  1064. the money kind of

  1065. clanging in

  1066. and based upon

  1067. the amount of money

  1068. they had,

  1069. essentially that trumpet

  1070. would sound, right?

  1071. And it reminds you

  1072. a little bit

  1073. of when Jesus

  1074. talks about

  1075. not letting the trumpet

  1076. sound

  1077. at what you're doing,

  1078. your good works

  1079. that you're doing.

  1080. And here,

  1081. that's exactly

  1082. what's taking place here.

  1083. These massive gold coins,

  1084. this coinage

  1085. that's being emptied

  1086. into these receptacles

1087. and then this poor widow woman

  1088. that's placing

  1089. just two tiny

  1090. copper coins

  1091. into this treasury.

  1092. She walks in

  1093. and Jesus knows

  1094. she's poor.

  1095. He says

1096. he saw a poor widow.

  1097. This word for poverty

  1098. describes someone

  1099. who is poor

  1100. but not destitute,

  1101. at least not yet.

  1102. it's probably pretty clear

  1103. from her appearance,

  1104. from what she's wearing,

  1105. from how she looks,

  1106. that there's something

  1107. about her

  1108. is out of sync

1109. with all of the wealthy

  1110. parade that's gone before.

  1111. And this intensifies,

  1112. this poverty

  1113. intensifies her condition.

  1114. This condition

  1115. that's desperate

  1116. and it likely showed

  1117. on her outward appearance.

  1118. But she gives

1119. her last two coins here,

  1120. we find.

  1121. And these two coins

  1122. were the smallest currency

  1123. available

  1124. in the first century.

  1125. It's called a lepta

  1126. and it computes

  1127. to one one hundredth

  1128. of a denarii.

  1129. And if you remember,

  1130. a denarii

  1131. is the wage

  1132. for one day.

  1133. So she's giving

  1134. two of these leptas

1135. which is two one hundredths

  1136. of a day's wage.

  1137. It's a pittance

  1138. to say the least.

  1139. It's negligible.

  1140. It's next to nothing.

  1141. And yet she gives

  1142. it all.

  1143. And of course

  1144. those who are watching

  1145. would have thought,

  1146. who cares

  1147. what she's giving?

  1148. It's nothing.

  1149. But Jesus

  1150. in his watchfulness

  1151. notices.

  1152. He knows.

  1153. It doesn't escape

  1154. his attention.

  1155. And he draws attention

  1156. to it.

  1157. This poor widow

  1158. has put in

1159. more than all of them.

  1160. And now this word

  1161. for poverty

  1162. is this intensive term,

  1163. very poor,

  1164. destitute individual.

  1165. spiritual.

  1166. They all contributed

  1167. out of their abundance,

  1168. Jesus says.

  1169. But she,

  1170. out of her poverty,

1171. put in all she had

  1172. to live on.

  1173. In other words,

  1174. literally,

  1175. in the Greek,

  1176. she gave

  1177. her livelihood.

  1178. She gave

  1179. her life.

  1180. She put her life

  1181. in the altar,

  1182. as it were.

  1183. What they gave

  1184. cost them little

  1185. in comparison.

  1186. But the woman

  1187. gave,

  1188. not from her abundance,

  1189. but from her

  1190. very life.

  1191. And Jesus,

1192. he puts it this way,

  1193. she gave

  1194. all of her life.

  1195. This is what Jesus

  1196. commends,

  1197. by the way,

  1198. to the scribes

  1199. and chief priests

  1200. who are challenging

  1201. him about the,

1202. is it right to pay

  1203. taxes to Caesar,

  1204. right?

  1205. And Jesus will respond,

  1206. give to Caesar

1207. the things that are Caesar's

  1208. and to God

1209. the things that are God's.

1210. And what is the thing

  1211. that belongs to God?

  1212. Everything.

  1213. Everything belongs to God.

  1214. And she does this.

  1215. She does this.

  1216. She gives it all.

  1217. She gives away

  1218. her life,

  1219. as it were,

  1220. her livelihood.

  1221. She comes,

  1222. she honors God.

1223. And while we don't know

  1224. the motivations

  1225. of her heart,

  1226. if she was obliged

  1227. to do this

  1228. because of the conditions

  1229. and the legalism

1230. that was kind of built

  1231. into the structure

  1232. of the temple,

1233. and she was being devoured

  1234. in this moment,

1235. and that was the object lesson

  1236. of widows being devoured

1237. by giving the very end,

  1238. or if in devotion

1239. she's giving to the Lord.

  1240. We don't know.

1241. But one thing we do know

  1242. is throughout the testimony

  1243. of Christ's teaching,

  1244. it is safe

1245. to give everything to God.

  1246. It's safe.

  1247. It's safe to entrust

  1248. your life to God.

1249. It's safe to trust Him

  1250. with your finances.

1251. It's safe to trust Him

  1252. with your health.

1253. It's safe to trust Him

  1254. with your future.

1255. It's safe to trust Him

  1256. with your relationships.

1257. It's safe to trust Him

  1258. with that crisis

  1259. that's happening

1260. in your life right now.

  1261. You can trust God.

1262. It is safe to trust Him.

  1263. Luke chapter 12,

    Luke 12 chapter mention

1264. I would just encourage you

  1265. if you're in Luke chapter 20,

    Luke 20 chapter mention

  1266. turn back just briefly

  1267. to Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

1268. This is not going to be

1269. a helpful slide for us.

1270. If you can just go back

1271. to the main points, please.

  1272. Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

1273. Let me just read for you

1274. picking up in verse 22, okay?

  1275. It says this,

  1276. this is Jesus speaking.

1277. He says to the disciples,

  1278. therefore I tell you,

  1279. do not be anxious

  1280. about your life.

  1281. Does that sound familiar?

  1282. What you will eat,

  1283. nor about your body,

1284. what you will put on.

1285. For life is more than food,

1286. and body more than clothing.

  1287. Consider the ravens.

1288. They neither sow nor reap.

  1289. They have neither storehouse

  1290. nor barn,

1291. and yet your God feeds them.

1292. Of how much more value

1293. are you than the birds?

  1294. And which of you,

  1295. by being anxious,

1296. can add a single hour

1297. to the span of his life?

  1298. If you then

1299. are not able to do

  1300. what is small,

1301. why are you so anxious

  1302. about the rest?

  1303. Consider the lilies,

  1304. how they grow.

1305. They neither toil nor spin.

  1306. Yet I tell you,

  1307. even Solomon,

  1308. in all his glory,

  1309. was not arrayed

  1310. like one of these.

1311. But if God so clothes the grass,

1312. which is alive in the field today,

  1313. and tomorrow is thrown

  1314. into the oven,

  1315. how much more

  1316. will he clothe you,

  1317. O little faith?

  1318. It's safe

  1319. to trust the Lord.

  1320. And it's safe

  1321. to trust him

  1322. with everything.

1323. And this is an example

1324. we see of this widow woman

  1325. entrusting

  1326. just a sample

  1327. of a glimpse

  1328. of her trusting God

  1329. with the last two

  1330. little coins

  1331. that she had.

  1332. It is an example

  1333. to us

1334. of how safe it is

  1335. to trust God.

  1336. We can trust him.

  1337. How much more

  1338. are you

  1339. than those things?

  1340. I love how

  1341. Paul puts it

  1342. in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1343. He says,

1344. If God is for us,

1345. who can be against us?

1346. He who did not spare

  1347. his own son,

  1348. but gave him up

  1349. for us all,

  1350. how shall he not

  1351. also with him

  1352. freely give us

  1353. all things?

  1354. There's a watchful God.

  1355. We have a God

  1356. who gives us

  1357. the gift

  1358. of care

  1359. and watchfulness

  1360. and concern.

  1361. And the more

  1362. we grow

  1363. in faith

  1364. and the more

  1365. we trust him

  1366. with the things

  1367. that we have,

  1368. then the more

  1369. we're going to see

  1370. the kindness

  1371. and the favor

  1372. of God

  1373. in carrying us,

  1374. in helping us,

  1375. in strengthening us,

  1376. in supporting us.

  1377. Even when things

  1378. may never change,

  1379. he'll use our lives

  1380. as a testimony

  1381. to his goodness.

  1382. Even when we may

  1383. feel and look

  1384. and seem

  1385. very destitute

  1386. just like

  1387. this poor widow.

  1388. Nothing

  1389. was going to change

  1390. about her circumstances

  1391. except

  1392. if she was giving

  1393. with a heart

  1394. of faith,

  1395. she was going

  1396. to see

  1397. the power of God

  1398. in meeting her needs

  1399. just like

  1400. Jesus commands

  1401. in Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  1402. You can trust

  1403. him with

  1404. your life.

  1405. May God help us

  1406. to do that well

1407. and to be a testimony

  1408. to those around us

  1409. that he is trustworthy

  1410. because he's a watchful,

  1411. observant,

  1412. loving God.

  1413. Let's pray.

  1414. Father, I pray

  1415. that you'd help us

  1416. to grow in this.

  1417. I pray, Lord,

  1418. that we would

  1419. embrace the gift

  1420. of your word,

1421. that it would be part

  1422. of our life

  1423. day by day,

  1424. that we would not

  1425. just be hearers

  1426. of the word

  1427. but doers of it.

  1428. Lord, help us

  1429. help us to embrace

  1430. the gift

  1431. of your warnings,

  1432. those warnings

  1433. that you put

  1434. in the scripture

  1435. that help keep us

  1436. away from the things

  1437. that would hurt us,

  1438. harm us.

  1439. And Lord,

  1440. thank you

  1441. that you're watchful.

  1442. And Father,

  1443. I pray

  1444. that our lives

  1445. would show

  1446. a growing

  1447. commitment

  1448. and confidence

  1449. in your care

  1450. and watchfulness.

1451. I pray in Jesus' name.

  1452. Amen.

  1453. Have a great week.

  1454. Be safe.

  1455. for driving home.
