  1. Well, good morning. It's good to see all of you.

  2. I would encourage you to open up your Bibles to Luke chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  3. That's where we're going to be this morning, Luke chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  4. !

  5. The details that we get from Luke chapter 18, now moving into Luke chapter 22,

Luke 18 chapter mention Luke 22 chapter mention

  6. we know that those details have helped to fill in a lot of the events that have taken place during this week.

  7. But now we find ourselves in Luke chapter 22,

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  8. and what was going slow before will now slow down even more

  9. as we get more of the details of this last 24 hours of Jesus' life.

  10. And here at the beginning of Luke chapter 22,

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  11. we're going to find the first part of Jesus' parting words,

  12. His final words to His disciples.

  13. Those parting words will begin in our time this morning,

  14. and will conclude in our time next week.

  15. But our lives are punctuated by parting words.

  16. Consistently, throughout the day, there are those parting words,

  17. those goodbye kind of words that we will share with the individuals

  18. that we intersect with on a day-by-day basis.

  19. Those interactions like saying goodbye to a spouse or to a child.

  20. Maybe they're going to work, or maybe your kids are going to school,

  21. and you say those goodbye words to them,

  22. those final words before they're gone for the day.

  23. Or maybe you're speaking to a friend on the phone,

  24. or texting, and you say those words of goodbye.

  25. Our lives are really dominated by parting words.

  26. But there are those occasions

  27. where those parting words take a greater significance.

  28. There's those occasions when the time and space

  29. between the reuniting

  30. will make those parting words more significant.

  31. Like saying goodbye to a child who's going off to college,

  32. or saying goodbye to a friend or a loved one

  33. who is moving across the country.

  34. Or perhaps even saying goodbye

  35. to that individual who is staring eternity in the face.

  36. You know, the significance of parting words

  37. is underscored by the time and space of that departure.

  38. You know, we think very little about those words of goodbye

  39. when we know in just a few short hours

  40. we're going to see that person again.

  41. But when those departures,

  42. when those words are final,

  43. when they're permanent,

  44. they take on a more significant tone.

  45. So this morning we're going to begin to look

  46. at a passage that contains the first of two parts

  47. of these final words of Jesus to his disciples.

  48. Of course, Jesus will see these disciples again

  49. after his resurrection,

  50. but there's something about this night,

  51. something about this occasion

  52. that takes a greater tone,

  53. a greater significance in the lives of those disciples

  54. so that every gospel record includes

  55. a part of these final words.

  56. This event that we're going to look at this evening

  57. or this morning in Luke chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  58. It points to the fact that there's something

  59. quite important.

  60. The gravity of these words

  61. takes special significance for us.

  62. And as we look at them together,

  63. I want to help us understand the significance

  64. not only of the picture

  65. that the words create for us,

  66. but kind of the backdrop of those words

  67. and the significance of this Passover week

  68. in helping to strengthen

  69. and reinforce the profound significance

  70. of the words that Christ will say.

  71. So if you're there with me in Luke chapter 22,

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  72. let me just read the first several verses

  73. and we're going to see,

  74. first of all,

  75. the timing of Christ's words.

  76. The timing of Christ's words.

  77. It says here,

  78. Now the feast of the unleavened bread drew near,

  79. which is called the Passover,

  80. and the chief priests and the scribes

  81. were seeking how to put him to death,

  82. for they feared the people.

  83. Then Satan entered into Judas,

  84. called Iscariot,

  85. who was of the number of the twelve.

  86. He went away and conferred with the chief priests

  87. and officers how he might betray him to them.

  88. And they were glad and agreed to give him money.

  89. So he consented and sought an opportunity

  90. to betray him to them in the absence of the crowd.

  91. First of all,

  92. this timing of Christ's words,

  93. and we see the picture that Jesus will now place

  94. on these familiar elements,

  95. the bread and the cup,

  96. has a context,

  97. has a backdrop,

  98. and to understand and really appreciate

  99. what Jesus is talking about.

  100. And this momentous occasion,

  101. we really should just briefly mention

  102. and discover what this picture was all about.

  103. This picture of the unleavened bread.

  104. This picture of the Passover that was taking place.

  105. Well, first, it was a picture of redemption.

  106. This picture of Passover,

  107. this picture of the unleavened bread,

  108. this feast that they were beginning to partake in

  109. for this week,

  110. was a picture of redemption.

  111. Now, I know that redemption is kind of a fancy word,

  112. and maybe one of those theological terms

  113. that's a little kind of out of sync with us.

  114. So let me just define that for us.

  115. Redemption is simply gaining possession of something

  116. in exchange for payment

  117. or clearing of a debt.

  118. In other words,

  119. a price has been paid

  120. that you deserve to pay.

  121. It was paid on your behalf,

  122. and so redemption was purchased on your behalf.

  123. This clearing of a debt.

  124. And those of you who are familiar

  125. with the Passover narrative

  126. will recognize or remember

  127. that this Passover points all the way back

  128. to Israel's time of captivity in Egypt.

  129. This Passover would take place

  130. during the first month

  131. from the 10th day

  132. to the 14th day of the month.

  133. And the Feast of Unleavened Bread

  134. would pick it up on the 15th

  135. and carry it through for the next week

  136. and end on the 21st.

  137. The instructions for Passover and Unleavened Bread

  138. are given to us in Exodus chapter 22.

    Exodus 22 chapter mention

  139. On the 10th day,

  140. every man was to take a lamb,

  141. a lamb that was supposed to be without blemish,

  142. without defect.

  143. It was supposed to be one year old,

  144. and then they would be brought into the home,

  145. and they would take it in as a family.

  146. This lamb would be like a pet

  147. for the next four days.

  148. They would keep this lamb until the 14th,

  149. until twilight,

  150. and then that lamb would be killed.

  151. And they would paint that blood on the doorpost,

  152. as you remember,

  153. and that blood would serve as a picture

  154. of the redemption or the price that had been paid

  155. for those who were living inside the home,

  156. especially the firstborn.

  157. And so when the death angel would pass over in Egypt,

  158. that angel would see the redemption price

  159. that had been paid,

  160. the blood of the lamb painted on the doorpost,

  161. and he would pass over that house.

  162. That lamb would be eaten at twilight,

  163. and any of the leftovers would be burnt

  164. before the next day.

  165. They would eat.

  166. They were supposed to eat

  167. with a belt on around their waist,

  168. with sandals on their feet,

  169. with a staff in their hand,

  170. and this was their permission to eat with haste.

  171. It was a reminder of the urgency.

  172. It was a reminder of the quickness

  173. that they were going to be able to exit

  174. this captivity in Egypt.

  175. That blood was to be a sign.

  176. A sign of redemption.

  177. A sign of a purchase price

  178. that had been paid for the oldest son.

  179. For 430 years,

  180. the Jews had been in Egypt,

  181. and for several decades,

  182. up until the time we get to Exodus chapter 1,

    Exodus 1 chapter mention

  183. they'd been slaves in Egypt.

  184. On this night,

  185. they would commemorate

  186. the time of deliverance

  187. through this lamb.

  188. This lamb is a picture of deliverance.

  189. This picture of redemption.

  190. This picture of this ransom price

  191. that had been paid

  192. for the firstborn in the house.

  193. This physical deliverance

  194. as all the firstborn sons

  195. would be preserved

  196. from this death

  197. that would pass over their home.

  198. But also a symbol

  199. of the spiritual deliverance,

  200. the salvation

  201. that God sought to bring

  202. to his people.

  203. It was a picture of redemption.

  204. But as the people of Israel

  205. would leave Egypt,

  206. we would find some other pictures

  207. that would be put in place

  208. and commemorated

  209. through the observance

  210. of the Passover.

  211. The next was found

  212. in Numbers chapter 9.

    Numbers 9 chapter mention

  213. And it becomes there

  214. a picture of promise.

  215. A picture of this relationship

  216. that God will establish

  217. with his people.

  218. In Numbers chapter 9,

    Numbers 9:1

  219. verses 1 and 2,

  220. it says,

  221. And the Lord spoke to Moses

  222. in the wilderness of Sinai

  223. in the first month

  224. of the second year

  225. after they had come out

  226. of the land of Egypt,

  227. saying,

  228. Let the people of Israel

  229. keep the Passover

  230. at its appointed time.

  231. Now, you may or may not know,

  232. but the people of Israel

  233. would leave Egypt.

  234. They would cross the Red Sea

  235. on dry ground

  236. as God would open

  237. the waters for them

  238. and rescue them

  239. from the armies.

  240. And then three months later,

  241. they would find themselves

  242. standing in

  243. at the foot of Mount Sinai.

  244. They would be

  245. in the plain of Sinai.

  246. And then for the next year,

  247. God would have them remain

  248. and camp there

  249. at the foot of Mount Sinai,

  250. receiving instructions from God.

  251. But specifically,

  252. enjoying the benefits

  253. of this new contract,

  254. this new covenant,

  255. this new promise of God,

  256. establishing this relationship,

  257. this promised relationship

  258. with His people.

  259. It would be referred to

  260. as the Old Covenant

  261. or the Mosaic Covenant.

  262. And here they would commemorate

  263. this new relationship

  264. and this promise

  265. where God would say to them,

  266. You will be my treasured possession

  267. among all the peoples.

  268. I'm setting you apart.

  269. I'm establishing this promise.

  270. I am making you distinct.

  271. I'm calling you out

  272. from the nations.

  273. I'm reestablishing

  274. and reaffirming

  275. this promise

  276. that goes all the way

  277. back to Abraham.

  278. And I'm reestablishing

  279. this promise again

  280. to you.

  281. It was a picture

  282. of promise.

  283. But then,

  284. as 40 years would go by,

  285. we find another picture.

  286. A picture of fulfillment

  287. from Joshua 5,

    Joshua 5:10

  288. verse 10.

  289. Now,

  290. Israel has wandered

  291. in the wilderness

  292. for 40 years

  293. and they've enjoyed

  294. the preservation of God,

  295. His protection

  296. of the various enemies,

  297. His preservation of them

  298. in providing

  299. for their needs,

  300. the manna by day

  301. that they would receive

  302. and keeping their clothes

  303. and their sandals

  304. from wearing out.

  305. And here in Joshua 5,

    Joshua 5:10

  306. verse 10,

  307. it says,

  308. while the people of Israel

  309. were encamped in Galgal,

  310. they kept the Passover

  311. on the 14th day

  312. of the month

  313. in the evening

  314. on the plains

  315. of Jericho.

  316. God's promise

  317. to His people.

  318. His commemoration,

  319. the captivity

  320. that they were under

  321. in Egypt

  322. and His promise

  323. to bring them

  324. to the promised land,

  325. His protection of them

  326. for the last 40 years,

  327. had finally arrived

  328. and here they had now

  329. crossed back

  330. over the Jordan River.

  331. They're standing

  332. in the shadow of Jericho

  333. and they're on the cusp

  334. of this great conquest

  335. and God is reestablishing

  336. for the people

  337. the things that I have promised

  338. to you,

  339. I will fulfill.

  340. You can bank

  341. on the promises

  342. that I've given to you.

  343. And here you stand

  344. in the shadow of Jericho

  345. and you can trust

  346. that the promises

  347. that I've made

  348. are promises

  349. that I will keep.

  350. And as you look

  351. in the rear view mirror

  352. and you see the protection

  353. that I've given to you,

  354. you can know

  355. that as you look forward

  356. and those enemies

  357. may be daunting

  358. and those cities

  359. may seem impenetrable,

  360. but because of the promise

  361. of God

  362. and the power of God,

  363. I will bring you

  364. into the land.

  365. I will fulfill

  366. my promise to you.

  367. The Passover

  368. is meant to capture

  369. many of those pictures

  370. and so that serves

  371. kind of as a backdrop

  372. for our time

  373. in this passage

  374. here in Luke chapter 22

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  375. and then for the next

  376. several hundreds of years,

  377. the Jews would commemorate

  378. this feast.

  379. They would celebrate

  380. in Jerusalem.

  381. They would commemorate

  382. the work of God

  383. in preserving His people

  384. in this picture

  385. of redemption.

  386. It was all a vivid,

  387. bloody picture

  388. of Israel's sin

  389. and their desperate need

  390. for forgiveness.

  391. So the significance

  392. of this day

  393. would stand

  394. as this backdrop

  395. of Jesus' parting words,

  396. words that Jesus

  397. would impart

  398. on this night

  399. to His disciples.

  400. Disciples,

  401. and these words,

  402. by the way,

  403. were in jeopardy

  404. and they were unaware

  405. perhaps of how dangerous

  406. things were,

  407. but Jesus was not.

  408. And so we turn

  409. our attention now

  410. to verse 2

  411. and we see now

  412. the preservation

  413. of Christ's words.

  414. Not just the timing

  415. of His words,

  416. but the preservation

  417. of His words.

  418. Notice again

  419. in verse 2.

  420. And the chief priests

  421. and the scribes

  422. were seeking

  423. how to put Him

  424. to death

  425. for they feared

  426. the people.

  427. There was danger.

  428. We're going to see

  429. two kinds of danger.

  430. First, danger

  431. from the outside,

  432. danger from the chief priests,

  433. dangers from the scribes.

  434. It seems strange,

  435. does it not,

  436. to say that Jesus

  437. needed to be careful

  438. of the religious elite,

  439. the religious leaders

  440. in Jerusalem.

  441. The scribes

  442. and the Pharisees

  443. and the chief priests

  444. had resisted Jesus' ministry

  445. from the very beginning,

  446. but now it had grown

  447. to a fever pitch.

  448. What sent them

  449. over the edge,

  450. what agitated them

  451. to the core,

  452. what was the recent miracle

  453. that Jesus had performed

  454. just two miles

  455. outside of the city

  456. in a little town

  457. of Bethany,

  458. and which happened

  459. about two months

  460. prior to this Passover event.

  461. It was fresh

  462. and it was public.

  463. The resurrection

  464. of Lazarus,

  465. raising Lazarus

  466. from the dead.

  467. That was the thing

  468. that sent them

  469. over the edge.

  470. It generated

  471. this extra enthusiasm

  472. during this week

  473. as Jesus

  474. and His disciples

  475. would make their way

  476. from Jericho

  477. up to Bethany

  478. on Saturday.

  479. They would spend

  480. the night in Bethany

  481. on Saturday evening

  482. and they would have

  483. a meal

  484. at Simon the leper's house

  485. and there,

  486. Mary would come

  487. and anoint

  488. Jesus' feet.

  489. But here,

  490. the crowds would come

  491. on Sunday morning.

  492. Thousands would stream

  493. out of Jerusalem

  494. and they would come

  495. because of the news.

  496. They had heard

  497. that Jesus was there

  498. and they had heard

  499. the word that Jesus

  500. had resurrected Lazarus

  501. so they're all gathering

  502. at Bethany's,

  503. at the house

  504. of Simon the leper.

  505. Jesus was close

  506. and then

  507. that entire group

  508. would usher Jesus

  509. into Jerusalem

  510. on that next day,

  511. that triumphal entry.

  512. And throughout the week,

  513. Jesus would teach

  514. in the temple

  515. and the people,

  516. as you remember,

  517. would hang on

  518. Jesus' every words.

  519. And so in the minds

  520. of these scribes

  521. and chief priests,

  522. Jesus was a threat.

  523. And in their minds,

  524. they needed to rescue

  525. the people

  526. from Jesus' teaching.

  527. But because Jesus

  528. had gained

  529. such a hearing

  530. among the people

  531. and he was moving

  532. right in public spaces,

  533. they were worried

  534. about the danger

  535. to themselves

  536. and the credibility

  537. of their leadership

  538. by putting Jesus

  539. into custody

  540. and coming against him.

  541. So they developed

  542. a new strategy.

  543. We need to utilize

  544. the Roman occupation

  545. to our favor.

  546. So in Luke chapter 20

    Luke 20 chapter mention

  547. in verses 19 and 20,

  548. they put their plan to work.

  549. We find there,

  550. the scribes

  551. and the chief priests

  552. sought to lay hands

  553. on him

  554. at that very hour

  555. for they perceived

  556. that he had told

  557. this parable against them,

  558. but they feared

  559. the people.

  560. So what did they do?

  561. They watched him

  562. and sent spies

  563. who pretended

  564. to be sincere

  565. that they might catch him

  566. in something he said

  567. so as to deliver him up

  568. to the authority

  569. and jurisdiction

  570. of the governor.

  571. They were too weak

  572. to make a stand

  573. on their own.

  574. They needed to revert

  575. to the help

  576. of the Roman authorities

  577. to do their dirty work

  578. for them.

  579. This plot, of course,

  580. failed

  581. as Jesus masterfully

  582. answers their questions.

  583. But this danger

  584. from the outside

  585. was an ever-present danger

  586. to these words

  587. that Jesus wanted to share

  588. on this night.

  589. But not only dangers

  590. from the outside,

  591. we now turn our attention

  592. in verses 3 to 6

  593. to dangers

  594. from the inside.

  595. Notice,

  596. Then Satan entered

  597. into Judas,

  598. called Iscariot,

  599. who was of the number

  600. of the twelve.

  601. He went away

  602. and conferred

  603. with the chief priests

  604. and officers

  605. how he might betray him

  606. to them.

  607. And they were glad

  608. and agreed

  609. to give them money.

  610. So he consented

  611. and sought an opportunity

  612. to betray him

  613. to them

  614. in the absence

  615. of a crowd.

  616. They needed to go private.

  617. They needed to take this

  618. out of public view

  619. and they needed to find a way

  620. to get Jesus

  621. when no one was looking

  622. and they caught their break

  623. with Judas.

  624. And the details

  625. aren't given to us

  626. there in verse 3,

  627. but simply

  628. that Satan

  629. entered into Judas.

  630. It's quite troubling

  631. even to consider

  632. the possibility

  633. that Judas,

  634. who had been

  635. with Jesus

  636. in ministry

  637. for the last three years,

  638. who had seemed

  639. to be such a loyal

  640. follower of him,

  641. is now vulnerable

  642. to Satan's influence

  643. and Satan

  644. entered into Judas.

  645. It's the same word,

  646. by the way,

  647. that Matthew uses

  648. or Christ uses

  649. in Matthew 6,

    Matthew 6:6

  650. verse 6,

  651. when he says,

  652. when you pray,

  653. go into your room.

  654. You see,

  655. Satan took up residence

  656. in Judas' heart.

  657. His true identity

  658. is now coming

  659. to the forefront.

  660. He gave way

  661. to Satan's attacks

  662. and now the rest

  663. was inevitable.

  664. These dominoes

  665. were beginning to fall.

  666. But you know,

  667. Judas was,

  668. or excuse me,

  669. Jesus was not surprised

  670. in any way

  671. by Judas' betrayal.

  672. Jesus knew early on

  673. who Judas was.

  674. We find in John 6,

    John 6:70–71

  675. verses 70 to 71,

  676. this is shortly after

  677. the feeding of the 5,000,

  678. and Jesus is making

  679. some very hard statements

  680. about his body

  681. and his blood,

  682. and it says,

  683. many of the disciples

  684. who had been following Jesus

  685. departed from him

  686. and didn't follow him anymore.

  687. And so now Jesus turns

  688. his attention

  689. to his apostles

  690. and says,

  691. did I not choose you,

  692. the twelve?

  693. And yet one of you

  694. is a devil.

  695. He spoke of Judas,

  696. the son of Simon Iscariot,

  697. for he,

  698. one of the twelve,

  699. was going to betray him.

  700. Jesus was not surprised.

  701. Jesus was not shocked.

  702. He was not disguised

  703. by Judas' plots.

  704. And Judas had shown his heart

  705. throughout Jesus' ministry,

  706. but perhaps the most evident sign

  707. of it was what happened

  708. just a few days earlier

  709. in this week,

  710. where if you remember,

  711. as Jesus was having his feet

  712. anointed by Mary,

  713. Judas is there to protest

  714. along with the rest

  715. of the disciples,

  716. and it was Judas who spoke.

  717. In John chapter 12,

    John 12:4

  718. verses 4 and 5,

  719. he says,

  720. Judas Iscariot,

  721. one of his disciples,

  722. he who was about

  723. to betray him said,

  724. why was this ointment

  725. not sold for 300 denarii

  726. and given to the poor?

  727. Here he puts on his face.

  728. Here he seems like one

  729. who is concerned

  730. about the poor and oppressed.

  731. Here he's one

  732. who seems to have

  733. the kind of heart

  734. that Jesus would commend.

  735. But what we find,

  736. and John kind of gives us

  737. a picture inside

  738. the window of Judas' heart,

  739. what we find from verse 6

  740. is where Judas' heart

  741. really was.

  742. He said this,

  743. not because he cared

  744. about the poor,

  745. but because he was a thief.

  746. And having charge

  747. of the money bag,

  748. he used to help himself

  749. to what was put into it.

  750. Things were becoming

  751. clear to Judas.

  752. This week that was fueled

  753. by enthusiasm of the crowds

  754. and the wonder

  755. of what Jesus would do

  756. in fulfilling all the things

  757. that were spoken about

  758. the Son of Man,

  759. the crowds wondered

  760. if this was the moment

  761. where the Messiah would come

  762. and establish his throne

  763. once and for all.

  764. But as the week continued,

  765. and especially as Jesus

  766. would speak about

  767. the destruction of the temple

  768. and the ransacking of Jerusalem

  769. and the killing of his people

  770. and the captivity

  771. that would also follow,

  772. Judas is beginning to wonder,

  773. is this really the Messiah?

  774. Is he really the one?

  775. And while his dreams

  776. were dashed

  777. because of the words of Jesus,

  778. maybe he could use

  779. this one last opportunity

  780. to his advantage.

  781. So he goes away.

  782. He confers with the chief priests.

  783. He asks for an arrangement of money.

  784. We find from Matthew 26, verse 15,

    Matthew 26:15

  785. Judas actually says,

  786. What will you give me

  787. if I deliver him over to you?

  788. That's what was on his heart.

  789. And so he sells Jesus out

  790. for 30 pieces of silver.

  791. Really a pittance

  792. in comparison

  793. with the betrayal

  794. that Judas will carry out.

  795. It was.

  796. There was danger from the inside.

  797. There was danger from the outside.

  798. And so in verses 7 to 13,

  799. we find the wise discretion

  800. of our Lord.

  801. The wise discretion

  802. from the Lord.

  803. Notice.

  804. Then came the day

  805. of unleavened bread

  806. on which the Passover lamb

  807. had to be sacrificed.

  808. So Jesus sent Peter

  809. and John saying,

  810. Go and prepare the Passover

  811. for us

  812. that we may eat it.

  813. They said to him,

  814. Where will you have us prepare it?

  815. He said to them,

  816. And behold,

  817. when you have entered the city,

  818. a man carrying a jar of water

  819. will meet you.

  820. Follow him into the house

  821. that he enters

  822. and tell him the master,

  823. tell the master of the house,

  824. the teacher says to you,

  825. Where is the guest room?

  826. Where I may eat the Passover

  827. with my disciples?

  828. And he will show you

  829. a large upper room

  830. furnished,

  831. prepare it there.

  832. and they went

  833. and found it

  834. just as he had told them

  835. and they prepared

  836. the Passover.

  837. You see,

  838. Jesus was not

  839. shocked or surprised

  840. by Judas' heart.

  841. And Jesus knew

  842. that Judas was looking

  843. for an opportunity

  844. to find Jesus

  845. in a private space

  846. away from the crowds.

  847. This would have been

  848. the golden opportunity.

  849. But Jesus had

  850. some important

  851. parting words to share

  852. with his disciples.

  853. And so,

  854. by his discernment,

  855. he invites

  856. two of his disciples,

  857. Peter and John,

  858. to go on a little mission.

  859. Now, we could spend

  860. some time talking about

  861. the sovereignty

  862. of our Savior

  863. and being able to know

  864. the exact place

  865. and the exact person

  866. and what that person

  867. was going to be carrying

  868. and where that person

  869. was going to go

  870. and how that person

  871. was going to show them

  872. the exact room

  873. that they were supposed

  874. to be doing

  875. this Passover feast in

  876. and the fact that

  877. that Passover room,

  878. that upper room,

  879. was actually available

  880. on a night like this

  881. and that it was actually

  882. furnished for this group.

  883. We could talk about

  884. the sovereignty

  885. of God in that,

  886. but I want to just

  887. draw attention

  888. to the careful discretion

  889. of our Savior,

  890. the importance

  891. of this night

  892. and the desires

  893. we're going to see

  894. of Jesus

  895. in these final words

  896. that He will impart

  897. to His disciples.

  898. Of course,

  899. the disciples would go,

  900. we find in verse 13,

  901. they went and found it

  902. just as He had told them

  903. and they prepared

  904. the Passover.

  905. This would have been

  906. like an all-day process.

  907. The things that they

  908. would have needed

  909. to purchase,

  910. they would have purchased

  911. the lamb,

  912. they would have prepared

  913. all of the various elements

  914. for that Passover meal.

  915. things like the wine,

  916. things like the pomegranates

  917. and the bitter herbs,

  918. the apples,

  919. the nuts,

  920. and the cinnamon.

  921. All of that need

  922. to be prepared

  923. ahead of time

  924. and then they would

  925. enjoy their meal.

  926. At around 2.30

  927. to 5.30 in the evening,

  928. they would go

  929. to the temple,

  930. they would purchase

  931. this Passover lamb,

  932. it would be slaughtered

  933. for them,

  934. they would take it back

  935. to this upper room

  936. and everything would

  937. finally be ready

  938. for them to enjoy.

  939. these final moments

  940. with the Savior.

  941. But the location

  942. of this room

  943. would be concealed,

  944. hidden until the actual

  945. time of the meal

  946. so that Jesus could

  947. communicate to his disciples

  948. what was of utmost importance.

  949. This picture of the Passover

  950. that we're going to look at next,

  951. this portrait of Christ's words

  952. that is captured for us

  953. in these elements.

  954. Verses 14 to 23

  955. says this,

  956. And when the hour came,

  957. he reclined the table

  958. and the apostles with him

  959. and he said to them,

  960. I have earnestly desired

  961. to eat this Passover with you

  962. before I suffer.

  963. For I tell you,

  964. I will not eat it

  965. until it is all fulfilled

  966. in the kingdom of God.

  967. And then in verse 18,

  968. For I tell you,

  969. that from now on,

  970. I will not drink

  971. of the fruit of the vine

  972. until the kingdom of God comes.

  973. This portrait of Christ's words

  974. begins with a picture of hope.

  975. This picture of hope.

  976. Notice there in verse 16,

  977. that he says this,

  978. I tell you,

  979. I will not eat

  980. until it is all fulfilled

  981. in the kingdom of God.

  982. There's other translations

  983. that say,

  984. I will not eat this again

  985. until the kingdom of God.

  986. The New King James says,

  987. I will no longer eat of it

  988. until it is fulfilled

  989. in the kingdom of God.

  990. And all of this points

  991. to the significance of hope,

  992. that what Jesus is about to do,

  993. however dark things may seem,

  994. however empty

  995. and hopeless things may be,

  996. that what is coming,

  997. Jesus anticipates.

  998. He knows what's coming.

  999. He's embracing that mission.

  1000. I know what God's will is

1001. and there is no wavering

1002. and there is no hesitation.

  1003. But before I suffer,

1004. while I have anticipated this night,

1005. I want to commemorate it for you

1006. and I want to let you understand

1007. that while things may seem

  1008. so final tomorrow

1009. when I'm put on the cross and die,

1010. it is just the beginning

1011. of what is to come.

1012. You can anticipate in hope

  1013. that what happens tomorrow

  1014. is just the beginning.

  1015. It's not the end.

1016. There will be another time

1017. where we will enjoy this again together.

  1018. This is just commemorating

1019. something that you can look forward to.

1020. Not just you can hope in

1021. in the way that we generally hope in.

1022. No, this is a hope of expectation.

1023. This is a hope of something

  1024. that is certain.

  1025. This is something

1026. that's going to be confident.

1027. It is going to happen.

1028. We're going to celebrate this again

  1029. someday in the future

1030. when the kingdom of God is coming.

  1031. There is hope.

1032. It points to this picture of promise

1033. and Jesus picks it up

  1034. from the first Passover.

  1035. This Passover of hope

  1036. and understanding

1037. that the words of God

1038. are words that will be fulfilled.

  1039. They're words of promise.

1040. They're words that are assured.

  1041. These words of hope.

  1042. Things may seem dark

1043. and they may seem uncertain.

  1044. You may not understand

  1045. what's taking place

1046. but you can have hope

1047. that we will do this again.

  1048. Reminds us

  1049. of the hope

1050. that we're supposed to have

  1051. in Jesus.

  1052. Remember

1053. a couple of passages ago

  1054. where

1055. Jesus is trying to help

  1056. the crowds

  1057. recognize

1058. that we tend to put our hope

1059. in a lot of things

  1060. especially things

1061. that are here on earth

  1062. but unless you're putting

  1063. your hope

  1064. in the sun

  1065. those hopes

  1066. are desperate

  1067. and they're superficial

  1068. those hopes

  1069. will let you down

  1070. but put your hope

  1071. in the sun.

  1072. There is promise there.

  1073. And then

  1074. in verses 17 and 20

  1075. not only

  1076. a picture of hope

1077. but a picture of promise

1078. and he takes this cup

1079. it says in verse 17

  1080. he took the cup

1081. and when he had given thanks

  1082. he said

  1083. take this

1084. and divide it among yourselves

  1085. for I tell you

  1086. that from now on

  1087. I will not drink

1088. of the fruit of the vine

  1089. until the kingdom

  1090. of God comes

1091. and he took the bread

1092. and when he had given thanks

  1093. he broke it

1094. and gave it to them

  1095. saying

  1096. this is my body

1097. which is given for you

  1098. do this

  1099. in remembrance of me

  1100. and likewise

  1101. the cup

  1102. after them

  1103. after they had eaten

  1104. saying

  1105. this cup

  1106. is poured out

  1107. for you

  1108. is the new covenant

  1109. in my blood.

  1110. I would encourage you

  1111. just remind you

  1112. to come this evening

  1113. we're gonna

  1114. we're gonna remember

  1115. these symbols

  1116. we're gonna remember

  1117. the body

  1118. and blood of Christ

  1119. we're gonna remember

  1120. this picture this evening

1121. and I would encourage you

  1122. to participate with us

  1123. we'll hear some testimonies

1124. of at least five individuals

  1125. who have

  1126. who have

  1127. enjoyed

  1128. and experienced

  1129. that work

  1130. of God's salvation

  1131. redemption for them

  1132. and they're gonna share

  1133. their testimonies tonight

1134. but the key word here

  1135. is the word

  1136. in verse 20

  1137. which says

  1138. the new covenant

  1139. in my blood

  1140. that new covenant

  1141. and Jesus places

  1142. new meaning

  1143. on this Passover meal

  1144. and

  1145. and the picture

  1146. that would have been

  1147. fresh

  1148. in the minds

  1149. of the disciples

  1150. is

  1151. is that promise

  1152. that happened

  1153. when the people

  1154. of Israel

  1155. were camped out

  1156. at Mount Sinai

  1157. in the commemoration

  1158. of the Passover

  1159. that took place there

  1160. and that promise

  1161. of relationship

  1162. that old covenant

  1163. that happened

  1164. and now

  1165. Jesus says

  1166. well you remember

  1167. that old covenant

1168. well let me tell you

  1169. a new covenant

  1170. is coming

  1171. and it's only happening

  1172. one way

  1173. it's happening

  1174. through my body

  1175. and my blood

  1176. through my sacrifice

  1177. there's only one way

  1178. to enjoy

  1179. the promise

  1180. of salvation

  1181. this promise

  1182. of redemption

  1183. it's only through

  1184. faith in Jesus Christ

  1185. this promise

  1186. that we find

  1187. of this new covenant

  1188. that is

  1189. that is given

  1190. to us

  1191. both in

  1192. the book

  1193. of Jeremiah

  1194. but also

  1195. in Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  1196. chapter 36

  1197. but Jeremiah

  1198. puts it this way

  1199. in Jeremiah 31

    Jeremiah 31:31–34

  1200. verses 31 to 34

  1201. when he says

  1202. behold the days

  1203. are coming

  1204. declares the Lord

  1205. when I will make

  1206. a new covenant

  1207. with the house

  1208. of Israel

  1209. and with the house

  1210. of Judah

1211. for this is the covenant

  1212. that I will make

  1213. with the house

  1214. of Israel

  1215. after those days

  1216. declares the Lord

1217. I will put my law

  1218. within them

  1219. I will write it

  1220. on their hearts

  1221. and I will be

  1222. their God

  1223. and they will be

  1224. my people

  1225. and no longer

  1226. shall each one

  1227. teach his neighbor

  1228. and each his brother

  1229. saying know the Lord

  1230. for they shall all

  1231. know me

1232. from the least of them

  1233. to the greatest

  1234. declares the Lord

  1235. for I will forgive

  1236. their iniquity

  1237. and I will remember

  1238. their sin

  1239. no more

  1240. that new covenant

  1241. that forgiveness

  1242. that we are able

  1243. to enjoy

  1244. the law

  1245. that's written

  1246. on our hearts

  1247. in the power

  1248. of the Holy Spirit

  1249. that changes us

  1250. from the inside out

  1251. and works out

  1252. his power

  1253. in our lives

  1254. that spiritual fruit

  1255. that happens

  1256. because of the power

  1257. of God

  1258. it's a work of God

  1259. and so not

  1260. following the rigid

  1261. forms of the law

  1262. as a means

  1263. of obtaining

  1264. some measure

  1265. of merit

  1266. from God

  1267. but trusting

  1268. in the Son

  1269. and the Son alone

  1270. as the only means

  1271. of salvation

  1272. that he alone

  1273. fulfilled the law

  1274. as God

  1275. had commanded

  1276. for his people

  1277. to do

  1278. and that he alone

  1279. was the sacrifice

  1280. for sin

  1281. have you partaken

  1282. of that promise

  1283. have you participated

  1284. with Christ

  1285. in forgiveness

  1286. of sin

  1287. are you

  1288. a new covenant

  1289. person

  1290. have you enjoyed

  1291. the benefits

  1292. of that law

  1293. that's written

  1294. on your hearts

  1295. because of the work

  1296. of the Spirit

  1297. and forgiveness

  1298. of sin

  1299. because of Christ's death

  1300. and resurrection

  1301. the promise

  1302. that Jesus

  1303. has in mind

  1304. is this work

  1305. that he will perform

  1306. on that Friday

  1307. and the resurrection

  1308. that will take place

  1309. on Sunday

  1310. and Jesus ushers

  1311. in this new age

  1312. where the promise

  1313. will unfold

  1314. on an international scale

  1315. it was a picture

  1316. of God's promise

  1317. but finally

  1318. a picture

  1319. of God's heart

  1320. a picture

  1321. of God's heart

  1322. notice in verse 21

  1323. but behold

  1324. the hand

  1325. of him

  1326. who betrays me

  1327. is with me

  1328. on the table

1329. for the son of man

1330. goes as it has been

  1331. determined

  1332. but woe

  1333. to that man

  1334. by whom

  1335. he is betrayed

  1336. and they began

  1337. to question

  1338. one another

  1339. which of them

  1340. it could be

  1341. who is going

  1342. to do this

  1343. you see

  1344. every step

  1345. of Jesus' ministry

  1346. was deliberate

  1347. and full of faith

  1348. do you find it

  1349. fascinating

  1350. that Judas

  1351. is sharing

  1352. this meal

  1353. with Jesus

  1354. the one

  1355. he's about

  1356. to betray

  1357. do you find it

  1358. marvelous

  1359. that Jesus

  1360. has welcomed

  1361. Judas

  1362. to participate

  1363. and to hear

  1364. these parting words

  1365. do you find

  1366. it fascinating

  1367. as John

  1368. will give us

  1369. the account

  1370. that Jesus

  1371. not only

  1372. allows him

  1373. to be part

  1374. of this

  1375. fellowshipping time

  1376. and hearing

  1377. these parting words

  1378. but Judas

  1379. is a part

  1380. of one

  1381. who enjoys

  1382. the service

  1383. of Christ

  1384. as Jesus

  1385. will put on

  1386. his towel

  1387. he'll bend

  1388. his knee

  1389. before Judas

  1390. he'll wash

  1391. Judas' feet

  1392. and it's

  1393. very likely

  1394. that Judas

  1395. was the one

  1396. who was actually

  1397. sitting in the

  1398. place of honor

  1399. at the table

  1400. in that

  1401. U-shaped table

  1402. the host

  1403. would sit

  1404. in the

  1405. center of that

  1406. table

  1407. and the

  1408. person of honor

  1409. would sit

  1410. to the right

  1411. and that's

  1412. where that

  1413. morsel of bread

  1414. would first

  1415. be handed over

  1416. and Jesus

  1417. we find

  1418. from John's

  1419. account

  1420. will hand

  1421. that morsel

  1422. over to Judas

  1423. and so none

  1424. of the disciples

  1425. even understood

  1426. what was unfolding

  1427. as Jesus said

  1428. who's going to

  1429. betray me

  1430. well the one

  1431. I hand

  1432. this morsel

  1433. of bread

  1434. to

  1435. he hands

  1436. it to Judas

  1437. Judas

  1438. is there

  1439. in the place

  1440. of honor

  1441. and all

  1442. the disciples

  1443. are blown

  1444. away

  1445. like what

  1446. just happened

  1447. and they

  1448. don't know

  1449. that Judas

  1450. is the one

  1451. who's about

  1452. to betray

  1453. Jesus

  1454. because

  1455. Judas

  1456. was in the

  1457. place of

  1458. honor

  1459. that entire

  1460. night

  1461. the heart

  1462. of God

  1463. was on

  1464. display

  1465. and that

  1466. heart

  1467. of God

  1468. continues

  1469. to extend

  1470. itself

  1471. to us

  1472. today

  1473. I wonder

  1474. have you

  1475. participated

  1476. in this

  1477. new covenant

  1478. arrangement

  1479. that Christ

  1480. has offered

  1481. through his

  1482. son Jesus

  1483. through his

  1484. death and

  1485. through his

  1486. resurrection

  1487. are you

  1488. one who is

  1489. able to

  1490. enjoy the

  1491. hope that

  1492. we have

  1493. that settled

  1494. confident

  1495. stable hope

  1496. that is given

  1497. to us

  1498. because of the

  1499. security of

  1500. that which

  1501. really matters

  1502. that relationship

  1503. that we have

  1504. with Christ

  1505. that peace

  1506. with God

  1507. through the

  1508. Lord Jesus

  1509. forgiveness

  1510. of sin

  1511. and cleansing

  1512. and a

  1513. promise

  1514. because of

  1515. what he's

  1516. accomplished

  1517. for us

  1518. of that

  1519. future

  1520. inheritance

  1521. which really

  1522. is Christ

  1523. himself

  1524. have you

  1525. enjoyed

  1526. and participated

  1527. in all of

  1528. those things

  1529. and as one

  1530. who's

  1531. participated

  1532. in them

  1533. is there

  1534. is there a

  1535. new

  1536. urgency

  1537. of your

  1538. heart

  1539. to fulfill

  1540. the mission

  1541. that God

  1542. has set you

  1543. on

  1544. that your

  1545. heart is

  1546. so filled

  1547. up with

  1548. the wonder

  1549. of what

  1550. Christ has

  1551. accomplished

  1552. for you

  1553. that you

  1554. can't keep

  1555. your mouth

  1556. quiet

  1557. of the

  1558. goodness

  1559. and grace

  1560. of our

  1561. Lord Jesus

  1562. and your

  1563. desire to do

  1564. and echo

  1565. the heart

  1566. of our

  1567. Savior

  1568. and seeking

  1569. to call

  1570. others

  1571. to participate

  1572. in that

  1573. same hope

  1574. that you

  1575. have

  1576. brothers and

  1577. sisters

  1578. we've been

  1579. given such

  1580. a great

  1581. blessing

  1582. a gift

  1583. from God

  1584. in salvation

  1585. has it

  1586. fundamentally

  1587. changed

  1588. the way

  1589. you live

  1590. has it

  1591. changed

  1592. your purpose

  1593. has it

  1594. changed

  1595. your priorities

  1596. has it

  1597. changed

  1598. your affections

  1599. for Christ

  1600. from day

  1601. to day

  1602. is it

  1603. clear

  1604. as you're

  1605. working

  1606. through

  1607. the day

  1608. by day

  1609. goodbyes

  1610. and hellos

  1611. of your

  1612. life

  1613. that the

  1614. parting

  1615. words of

  1616. Christ

  1617. are really

  1618. preeminent

  1619. for you

  1620. that there

  1621. is this

  1622. driving force

  1623. that for

  1624. me to

  1625. live

  1626. is Christ

  1627. but to

  1628. die

  1629. is gain

  1630. oh may

  1631. that be

  1632. true

  1633. of us

  1634. as we

  1635. seek to

  1636. live

  1637. from day

  1638. to day

  1639. let me

  1640. pray

  1641. oh Lord

  1642. we are so

  1643. grateful

  1644. for your

  1645. sacrifice

  1646. thank you

  1647. for the

  1648. promise that

  1649. we have

  1650. in Christ

  1651. through salvation

  1652. forgiveness

  1653. of sin

  1654. redemption

  1655. this purchase

  1656. price that has

  1657. been paid

  1658. for us

  1659. and Lord

  1660. I pray

  1661. that you

  1662. would help

  1663. the expression

  1664. of our

  1665. lives

  1666. to demonstrate

  1667. a walk

  1668. that is

  1669. worthy

  1670. of the

  1671. gospel

  1672. that we

  1673. are putting

  1674. you in the

  1675. forefront of

  1676. our attention

  1677. and that because

  1678. you are in

  1679. the first

  1680. place

  1681. in our

  1682. focus

  1683. that our

  1684. lives are

  1685. moving

  1686. towards you

  1687. and our

  1688. desire

  1689. is to

  1690. draw

  1691. others

  1692. along

  1693. in the

  1694. way that

  1695. we live

  1696. in the

  1697. way that

  1698. we speak

  1699. in the

  1700. way that

  1701. we act

  1702. God I

  1703. pray that

  1704. you would

  1705. help us

  1706. day by

  1707. day

  1708. to grow

  1709. in our

  1710. affection

  1711. for Christ

  1712. in the

  1713. way that

  1714. Christ shows

  1715. through our

  1716. lives

  1717. I pray in

  1718. Jesus name

  1719. amen

  1720. God bless

  1721. you

  1722. have a

  1723. great

  1724. week
