  1. Well, the first important thing that I will say is open your Bibles. Turn in your Bibles to Luke chapter 23.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  2. Let's pray.

  3. Our Father, this morning our prayers are instructed by Scripture.

  4. And for one, I'm reminded of the text in Psalm 119 where the psalmist prayed,

  5. Open thou mine eyes that I might behold wondrous truths of thy law.

  6. And apart from your working to give us understanding, we will leave here unchanged, indifferent,

  7. no more drawn to the glory of Christ than we were before.

  8. And so we are thankful for the instruction of Scripture that reminds us to beg for those things that are appropriate and honoring to Christ.

  9. We are also reminded of the words of Zechariah where he said,

  10. Not by might nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord.

  11. And we are dependent upon the Spirit of God making your word clear, persuasive, encouraging, convicting for the glory of Christ.

  12. We ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  13. Amen.

  14. So allow me to do something just a little different here.

  15. The second service.

  16. I'm going to ask whoever's running the slides, would you just not do them?

  17. Because I'm not used to this.

  18. Okay.

  19. So bear with me.

  20. Just follow me.

  21. How's that?

  22. And don't look for little prompts on the screen because they'll throw you off and they'll probably throw me off.

  23. And we'll all wonder what happened on the way to Gethsemane.

  24. So let me start by saying this.

  25. Earlier as I was sitting here on the front, which is my place, a little girl asked me,

  26. Are you preaching?

  27. I thought, how is she?

  28. Well, it's this, you know, the rig that gives me away.

  29. And I said, Yes, I am.

  30. I said, Will you pray for me?

  31. She got this little quizzical look on her face.

  32. And I said, Did you know that you're supposed to pray when the pastor preaches?

  33. And with a little innocent face, she said, No, I didn't.

  34. I said, Well, the Bible says to do it.

  35. And how many of you know that praying is part of your obligation while someone is preaching the word of God?

  36. Wave your hand just kind of like this so I know you don't need fresh instruction.

  37. Go ahead.

  38. The scriptures are explicit that you have an obligation to pray for the preaching of the word of God.

  39. Now, when a pastor says something like that, there's a little follow-up that should always happen.

  40. Do you know what it is?

  41. Where's that in the Bible?

  42. Shouldn't that be the thought?

  43. Where do you find that?

  44. And that Tim Kenoyer really has no authority,

  45. nothing of significance to say apart from Scripture.

  46. 2 Thessalonians 3, verse 1 and 2.

    2 Thessalonians 3:1

  47. Pray that the word of God would have free course and bear fruit among you.

  48. And if I'm redundant and repetitious about one thing in particular,

  49. apart from believing the Lord Jesus Christ,

  50. it ought to be pray when a man's preaching.

  51. And I will not be put out, if you think it's necessary,

  52. while I am preaching, to go ahead and say out loud,

  53. Lord, help him.

  54. It's not going to bother me.

  55. I say it when I'm preaching.

  56. Because apart from the enabling of the Spirit of God,

  57. the preaching of the word of God is not made effective,

  58. either in the hearts of believers or in the lives of unbelievers.

  59. So, with that as an introduction,

  60. let me say that it will also be my privilege, Lord willing,

  61. and the creek doesn't rise,

  62. that I preached on May 18th.

  63. And I'm going to tell you ahead of time what I'm going to preach that week

  64. so that you can appreciate this morning the organic unity of Scripture.

  65. What I mean by that is how the Bible fits together.

  66. And what we are going to be looking at this morning has bearing

  67. on the central theme of the Scriptures,

  68. which, by the way, is Jesus.

  69. The first passage that became significant in my life was passages that convicted Tim Kenoyer

  70. of the darkness of his soul and his absolute depravity.

  71. And I remember the terrible burden of realizing that I was a sinner that stood justly condemned before a holy God.

  72. And I was broken by that.

  73. The second passage that became very significant to me was in Romans,

  74. several different texts that say,

  75. believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

  76. Well, that's not the Romans passage,

  77. but it says,

  78. whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

  79. Romans 10, 11.

  80. And I remember crying out and finding the blessing and the relief of salvation through the Lord Jesus alone.

  81. Later on in my life,

  82. the Lord used 1 Peter 1, verse 8 in particular

    1 Peter 1:8

  83. to really change some of the trajectory of my life.

  84. Some of you may know it by heart.

  85. Whom having not seen, we love.

  86. Though now we see him not yet believing,

  87. we are filled with joy, inexpressible, and full of glory.

  88. And that verse got a hold of me.

  89. Because I realized that while I didn't want to admit it,

  90. more often than not, I was like that nasty little queen,

  91. you know, mirror, mirror on the wall,

  92. who's the fairest of them all?

  93. Now, I know none of you think that way.

  94. But you know when other people are talking about what's a blessing to them,

  95. you're thinking you're it?

  96. Or when people aren't thinking about you,

  97. you're a little put out, right?

  98. Huh?

  99. And that verse began convicting Tim Knoyer

  100. that he didn't love Jesus like he should.

  101. And that began a journey.

  102. That will end up in eternity.

  103. And I will be satisfied

  104. when I see him as he is,

  105. and I shall be like him.

  106. Isn't that good?

  107. So how does that relate to today?

  108. Well,

  109. our pastors have been working their way

  110. through the last portion of Luke,

  111. and one sermon after another

  112. has just reminded us

  113. of the beauty and the glory of Jesus.

  114. Isn't that right?

  115. I mean, I remember Pastor Andrew

  116. preaching about the love of Christ for Judas.

  117. Judas.

  118. It's like,

  119. you're kidding me?

  120. And I just,

  121. that's my Jesus.

  122. And you know,

  123. if he can love Judas,

  124. Tim's within his range.

  125. And then the other week,

  126. Pastor David was talking about

  127. Jesus praying in the garden,

  128. and he was talking about the burden

  129. of what it was to go to the cross,

  130. and he was willing to do that.

  131. Nevertheless, not my will,

  132. but yours, right?

  133. That's my Jesus.

  134. And last week,

  135. Pastor Andrew,

  136. by the way,

  137. how many of you are praying

  138. for Pastor Andrew

  139. on a regular basis

  140. before he goes,

  141. raise your hands.

  142. Everybody get your hand up.

  143. Just out of practice.

  144. Go ahead.

  145. Look at me.

  146. Pray for your pastors,

  147. right?

  148. Okay?

  149. But last week,

  150. come back to the subject.

  151. Pastor Andrew was talking about

  152. Jesus and his love for Peter.

  153. how broken Peter must have felt

  154. when he denied the Lord Jesus.

  155. And Jesus loved him anyway.

  156. Never changed his mind about Peter.

  157. And if Jesus won't change his mind about Peter,

  158. he won't change his mind about Tim.

  159. And so here we are this morning

  160. in another portion

  161. where the takeaway

  162. that I want you to take with you

  163. when you leave this morning

  164. is that,

  165. wow,

  166. that's my Savior.

  167. And I have every reason

  168. to love him

  169. because he is so unbelievable

  170. in his love

  171. and his grace.

  172. I want us to look in

  173. three simple steps.

  174. Number one,

  175. what do we see in the text?

  176. And we're not going to spend

  177. a lot of time there

  178. because I think the text

  179. is fairly well known

  180. and while there are

  181. some important pieces

  182. to draw from it,

  183. I think the

  184. overarching

  185. question

  186. is going to be

  187. why did Jesus

  188. do what he did?

  189. namely in being quiet

  190. in the face

  191. of false accusations.

  192. Then the last thing

  193. that we're going to look at

  194. is

  195. how does this fit

  196. into my life?

  197. One of the characteristics

  198. of Bible preaching

  199. is that it's not just

  200. an explanation

  201. of the text itself

  202. but it is a spirit-enabled

  203. application of

  204. how does that fit

  205. my life

  206. and how should I live

  207. because of Jesus?

  208. Well, let's look

  209. first of all at the text

  210. and just a reminder

  211. to you here

  212. that where we are

  213. in chapter 23

  214. is we are

  215. after chapter 22

  216. and in chapter 22

  217. Jesus had been

  218. before the Sanhedrin,

  219. the high court

  220. of the nation of Israel

  221. and they had brought him in

  222. and their intention

  223. was to accuse him

  224. and to put him to death

  225. and their accusations

  226. across the board

  227. were all false.

  228. Every one of them.

  229. They lie about this,

  230. they lie about that,

  231. they lie about the other thing

  232. and they couldn't even get

  233. their lies to fit

  234. and I've thought about that.

  235. That must have been

  236. profoundly frustrating

  237. for the individuals

  238. who are bringing

  239. the accusations of Jesus

  240. to get,

  241. you know,

  242. hey, would you mind

  243. telling a lie about Jesus

  244. and that the next guy

  245. couldn't pull off the lie

  246. to make it fit

  247. with the previous one?

  248. It was a mess

  249. and he was quiet.

  250. One false accusation

  251. after another,

  252. he was quiet.

  253. I had the privilege

  254. of raising four children

  255. and one of the things

  256. I learned about children,

  257. maybe my mind

  258. were different,

  259. but in our children's case,

  260. sometimes things would happen

  261. in the basement.

  262. Do you understand

  263. what I'm saying?

  264. things would happen

  265. in the basement

  266. and more often than not

  267. it happened with my boys,

  268. not as much as my girls,

  269. but my,

  270. and I'd hear something

  271. going on down there

  272. and then suddenly

  273. I'd hear running,

  274. coming up the steps

  275. and sometimes I thought

  276. to myself,

  277. the first person

  278. is probably guilty.

  279. But one of the things

  280. I noticed is that

  281. when my boys came up

  282. to deliver a report,

  283. they were always innocent

  284. and they were ready

  285. to declare their innocence

  286. with all sincerity

  287. and passion

  288. just befitting

  289. of the moment.

  290. You know,

  291. it's like,

  292. yeah,

  293. innocent as,

  294. you know,

  295. wind-driven snow

  296. and it's normal

  297. and so here

  298. we kind of find Jesus

  299. with all these accusations.

  300. He didn't say a word.

  301. Didn't say a word.

  302. Finally,

  303. you know the scene.

  304. The high priest says,

  305. are you?

  306. And he says,

  307. yeah,

  308. you got that one

  309. and he says,

  310. by the way,

  311. the day is coming when?

  312. And he makes it clear

  313. that judgment

  314. is going to happen

  315. and there's no question.

  316. Well,

  317. we've heard what you said.

  318. You're guilty of blasphemy.

  319. You deserve death.

  320. They decide

  321. we can't put him to death

  322. formally,

  323. legally

  324. so we have to march him over

  325. to the Roman authorities.

  326. That's Pilate.

  327. That's where we pick up

  328. in the passage

  329. that we're looking at

  330. this week

  331. and we find that

  332. they come in the morning

  333. before Pilate

  334. and they come to accuse him

  335. and interestingly enough,

  336. and I want you to notice this anyway,

  337. in verse 2,

  338. they begin to accuse him saying,

  339. we found this man

  340. misleading our nation

  341. and forbidding us

  342. to give tribute

  343. to Caesar.

  344. completely different accusation

  345. than what had gone on

  346. all night

  347. in that trumped up judgment

  348. against Jesus,

  349. completely inappropriate

  350. and contrary

  351. to a Jewish law.

  352. So here they come

  353. to the civil authorities

  354. and instead of saying,

  355. you know,

  356. we've got a problem

  357. with a theological issue

  358. in the fact that

  359. this man is saying

  360. that he is God's son,

  361. no,

  362. we're concerned about

  363. something completely different.

  364. This is a political matter

  365. and we're very concerned.

  366. What was their accusation?

  367. You're misleading the nation

  368. and that word means

  369. to kind of twist

  370. and take the people

  371. away from where

  372. they should be.

  373. Now we get to the second part

  374. and that's really

  375. the interesting part

  376. and part in fact

  377. because here they are

  378. accusing Jesus

  379. of something completely contrary

  380. to what his public teaching

  381. had been.

  382. they said

  383. that Jesus

  384. was encouraging

  385. the nation

  386. not to pay

  387. their taxes.

  388. I'm not going to ask

  389. if any of you

  390. have ever been audited

  391. because I would expect

  392. you not to wave at me

  393. if you have.

  394. But if you think

  395. that an audit

  396. by the IRS

  397. is something

  398. that you prefer

  399. not going through,

  400. I assure you

  401. that not paying taxes

  402. to the Roman authorities

  403. was far more severe

  404. and the consequences

  405. more destructive

  406. to your well-being

  407. than what we go through here.

  408. And the Romans

  409. were very, very interested

  410. in seeing that

  411. all of their taxes

  412. were gathered.

  413. And they brought a charge

  414. that should have

  415. made Pilate's hair

  416. stand on end.

  417. It's interesting actually

  418. when you read

  419. the portion

  420. of scripture here

  421. that Pilate

  422. was really not

  423. put out by that.

  424. Now there's a reason

  425. because Pilate

  426. was not ignorant

  427. of what was going on

  428. in his jurisdiction

  429. and he fundamentally

  430. knew that

  431. the problem

  432. that the Jewish leadership

  433. had with Jesus

  434. had nothing to do

  435. with Rome

  436. or taxation.

  437. It had to do

  438. with their

  439. internal

  440. dispute

  441. with Jesus

  442. and what he was teaching.

  443. But they come

  444. and they make

  445. these charges

  446. and once again

  447. I want you to recognize

  448. that in the face

  449. of these false allegations

  450. for all practical purposes

  451. Jesus is quiet.

  452. He doesn't say anything.

  453. And you stop

  454. and recognize

  455. that apart

  456. from the earlier response

  457. that he had given

  458. to the high priest

  459. regarding his deity

  460. fundamentally

  461. his communications

  462. with Pilate

  463. were quite similar.

  464. And it was striking

  465. to Pilate

  466. that in the face

  467. of these accusations

  468. Jesus was quiet.

  469. in particular

  470. because Pilate

  471. knew

  472. that he was

  473. in the position

  474. at least he assumed

  475. that he was in the position

  476. of putting Jesus

  477. to death.

  478. What's the deal

  479. with you?

  480. I'm in the situation

  481. that should I decide

  482. you can be executed

  483. or should I decide

  484. you could be

  485. forgiven

  486. and excused.

  487. In the text

  488. it is interesting

  489. that in the face

  490. of the false accusations

  491. that Jesus

  492. was subjected to

  493. that eventually

  494. as we read there

  495. in the passage

  496. Pilate says this

  497. I find no guilt

  498. in this man.

  499. I want you to understand

  500. that in making

  501. that statement

  502. Pilate was making

  503. a judgment

  504. that had standing.

  505. He wasn't just giving

  506. a little bit

  507. of an opinion.

  508. You know what

  509. I'm not real sure.

  510. No, this man

  511. is innocent.

  512. Practically speaking

  513. the matter should

  514. have stood there

  515. but as you read

  516. in the text

  517. in verse 5

  518. it says

  519. but they were urgent

  520. when they found out

  521. that Pilate

  522. was not willing

  523. to accommodate

  524. their false accusations

  525. against Jesus

  526. they became

  527. even more animated

  528. and more concerned

  529. with the fact

  530. that their ambitions

  531. of seeing Jesus

  532. crucified on the cross

  533. were going to come

  534. to an end

  535. and they weren't going

  536. to accomplish

  537. their agenda.

  538. I do want you

  539. to understand

  540. that by this point

  541. in Pilate's

  542. public life

  543. he had already

  544. endured several

  545. very significant

  546. political upheavals

  547. among the Jews

  548. and the powers

  549. that were in Rome

  550. were becoming

  551. a little suspicious

  552. of Pilate's ability

  553. to reign

  554. to govern

  555. and that helps us

  556. understand a little bit

  557. why once the

  558. public outcry

  559. became so significant

  560. and so pointed

  561. that Pilate went ahead

  562. and listened further

  563. and eventually

  564. accommodated

  565. the unjust

  566. ambitions

  567. of a wicked people

  568. in a desire

  569. to crucify Christ.

  570. Well as things

  571. are playing out

  572. okay

  573. we also read

  574. not usually stirring

  575. up people

  576. but he's teaching

  577. throughout all Judea

  578. and from Galilee

  579. even to this place

  580. and when Pilate

  581. heard those words

  582. Judea and Galilee

  583. he thought to himself

  584. ha!

  585. a brilliant

  586. opportunity

  587. of political

  588. dodgem.

  589. Why?

  590. Because he knew

  591. that Herod

  592. who was

  593. the one

  594. responsible

  595. for these areas

  596. Judea and Galilee

  597. was in town

  598. and the Roman

  599. court system

  600. allowed for an

  601. individual to be judged

  602. where he committed

  603. the crime

  604. or where he was

  605. accused of the crime

  606. where he lived

  607. or in

  608. Rome

  609. okay

  610. and so when

  611. Pilate

  612. heard that

  613. Herod was in town

  614. he thought to himself

  615. now I have an out

  616. I really don't

  617. be responsible

  618. for putting this

  619. guy to death

  620. because I know

  621. this is just

  622. a matter of

  623. political

  624. intrigue

  625. and hateful

  626. attitude

  627. towards an

  628. undeserving

  629. individual

  630. who's falsely

  631. accused

  632. let me hand

  633. this off

  634. to

  635. Herod

  636. how many of you

  637. have ever found

  638. it convenient

  639. to have somebody

  640. else do your

  641. dirty work

  642. we've all done

  643. that

  644. it's like

  645. yeah I saw

  646. that hand

  647. go talk

  648. to your

  649. dad

  650. that was

  651. terrifying to me

  652. because he would

  653. always say

  654. go pick a belt

  655. I never found

  656. one that worked

  657. okay

  658. so

  659. here is

  660. Pilate

  661. thinking to

  662. himself

  663. ha

  664. I have this

  665. opportunity

  666. of handing

  667. off judgment

  668. to

  669. Herod

  670. now we do

  671. know

  672. that

  673. when Herod

  674. had the

  675. opportunity

  676. he was

  677. quite

  678. intrigued

  679. by this

  680. and he

  681. thought to

  682. himself

  683. you know

  684. what

  685. I've been

  686. curious

  687. about this

  688. Jesus

  689. remember

  690. earlier

  691. is this

  692. John the

  693. Baptist

  694. come back

  695. from the

  696. dead

  697. and didn't

  698. know who

  699. he was

  700. and he'd

  701. heard

  702. now by the

  703. way

  704. you do

  705. have to

  706. understand

  707. that

  708. authoritarian

  709. individuals

  710. like Pilate

  711. and Herod

  712. did work

  713. hard

  714. to have

  715. kind of

  716. a pulse

  717. on what

  718. was happening

  719. in their

  720. region

  721. because

  722. they were

  723. responsible

  724. particularly

  725. for civil

  726. obedience

  727. and so

  728. they would

  729. have known

  730. well there's

  731. this guy

  732. going around

  733. doing miracles

  734. he turned

  735. water into

  736. wine

  737. and he

  738. walked on

  739. water

  740. and he

  741. healed

  742. the sick

  743. and he's

  744. raised the

  745. dead

  746. and Herod

  747. thought to

  748. himself

  749. you know

  750. what

  751. I'd

  752. really

  753. like to

  754. see him

  755. do one

  756. of these

  757. you know

  758. Jesus

  759. shows up

  760. they mock

  761. him

  762. Jesus

  763. doesn't

  764. answer

  765. doesn't

  766. show a

  767. miracle

  768. he's

  769. quiet

  770. he's

  771. quiet

  772. and it

  773. frustrates

  774. Herod

  775. and he

  776. sends him

  777. back

  778. to

  779. Pilate

  780. who

  781. ultimately

  782. gives

  783. in

  784. and has

  785. Jesus

  786. delivered

  787. to be

  788. crucified

  789. that's

  790. in broad

  791. terms

  792. the

  793. what

  794. of the

  795. text

  796. now you

  797. can work

  798. through

  799. the particular

  800. details

  801. and see

  802. it for

  803. yourself

  804. and it's

  805. there to

  806. be

  807. considered

  808. and it's

  809. there for

  810. our record

  811. to understand

  812. what happened

  813. but I think

  814. another thing

  815. that is very

  816. important for us

  817. to understand

  818. as we are

  819. working our

  820. way through

  821. the text

  822. is it's

  823. appropriate

  824. when we are

  825. engaged in

  826. personal Bible

  827. study

  828. to ask

  829. the question

  830. why

  831. why do

  832. you do

  833. that

  834. and you

  835. probably have

  836. done that

  837. when

  838. one of your

  839. children has

  840. come to you

  841. or somebody

  842. else has

  843. come and

  844. said

  845. so and so

  846. did such

  847. and such

  848. to me

  849. and you

  850. ask yourself

  851. why

  852. why did

  853. you do

  854. that

  855. and so

  856. what I want

  857. us to do

  858. next is I

  859. want us to

  860. think about

  861. the why

  862. behind the

  863. silence

  864. of our

  865. Savior

  866. because it's

  867. significant

  868. the why

  869. is significant

  870. in part

  871. because

  872. the truth

  873. of the matter

  874. is the

  875. silence

  876. is not

  877. normal

  878. now you

  879. may think

  880. to yourself

  881. oh well

  882. I am very

  883. guarded

  884. in what I

  885. say

  886. but the

  887. truth of

  888. the matter

  889. is you're

  890. not

  891. we all

  892. struggle

  893. with our

  894. tongue

  895. James makes

  896. that clear

  897. doesn't it

  898. we struggle

  899. with our

  900. tongue

  901. I will tell

  902. you that the

  903. older I get

  904. the more

  905. pleasure I

  906. take in the

  907. things I

  908. don't say

  909. rather than

  910. the things I

  911. do say

  912. and in

  913. relationship to

  914. that one of

  915. the things that

  916. I found that

  917. has helped

  918. me and I

  919. have said so

  920. many things

  921. that I

  922. shouldn't have

  923. said

  924. is a

  925. passage of

  926. scripture

  927. there are

  928. many of

  929. them that

  930. come to

  931. mind

  932. but one in

  933. particular

  934. Proverbs

    Proverbs 10:19

  935. chapter 10

  936. verse 19

  937. when words

  938. are many

  939. transgression

  940. is not

  941. lacking

  942. when words

  943. are many

  944. transgression

  945. is not

  946. lacking

  947. do you know

  948. what that's

  949. saying

  950. the more

  951. I talk

  952. the higher

  953. the probability

  954. that I'm

  955. going to say

  956. something I

  957. shouldn't

  958. now in

  959. relationship

  960. to that

  961. because I

  962. would I

  963. would make

  964. the assumption

  965. that most

  966. of you

  967. here are

  968. believers

  969. and since

  970. you are

  971. believers

  972. I'm going

  973. to make

  974. another

  975. assumption

  976. that you're

  977. concerned

  978. with your

  979. ongoing

  980. spiritual

  981. development

  982. and your

  983. progressive

  984. hatred for

  985. sin

  986. right

  987. I don't

  988. want to keep

  989. on doing

  990. those things

  991. that I

  992. have done

  993. in the

  994. past

  995. if there

  996. is a

  997. sincere

  998. desire

  999. to grow

  1000. and change

  1001. it will

  1002. show up

  1003. in the

  1004. battery

  1005. of bible

  1006. verses

  1007. you have

  1008. that are

  1009. supportive

  1010. of your

  1011. struggle

  1012. did you

  1013. understand

  1014. what I

  1015. said

  1016. I'm a

  1017. deer

  1018. hunter

  1019. and I've

  1020. learned that

  1021. more arrows

  1022. are better

  1023. than fewer

  1024. arrows

  1025. and what do

  1026. I mean

  1027. by that

  1028. if I miss

  1029. with one

  1030. I'd like

  1031. to have

  1032. another

  1033. and another

  1034. and another

  1035. until I

  1036. accomplish

  1037. my end

  1038. okay

  1039. same thing

  1040. with bible

  1041. verses

  1042. you're

  1043. struggling

  1044. with a

  1045. matter

  1046. of sin

  1047. whether

  1048. it is

  1049. in the

  1050. matter

  1051. of

  1052. moral

  1053. purity

  1054. or it's

  1055. the matter

  1056. of

  1057. pride

  1058. pride

  1059. cometh

  1060. before

  1061. a

  1062. and a

  1063. haughty

  1064. spirit

  1065. before

  1066. I hope

  1067. that that's

  1068. not the

  1069. end

  1070. of the

  1071. passages

  1072. that you

  1073. have

  1074. that relate

  1075. to that

  1076. ongoing

  1077. struggle

  1078. my point

  1079. is this

  1080. is that

  1081. when we

  1082. recognize

  1083. that we

  1084. are dealing

  1085. with a

  1086. battle

  1087. of sin

  1088. in our

  1089. heart

  1090. one of the

  1091. indications

  1092. that we're

  1093. taking that

  1094. struggle

  1095. seriously

  1096. is we

  1097. begin to

  1098. fill up

  1099. our mind

  1100. with passages

  1101. that the

  1102. Holy Spirit

  1103. will bring

  1104. to mind

  1105. to help

  1106. us with

  1107. that battle

  1108. amen

  1109. the Holy Spirit

  1110. is really not

  1111. obligated to

  1112. help me

  1113. with my

  1114. self-talk

  1115. how many of

  1116. you know

  1117. what I mean

  1118. by self-talk

  1119. now Tim

  1120. the Holy

  1121. Spirit is

  1122. obligated to

  1123. take the

  1124. scriptures

  1125. and use

  1126. them

  1127. is not

  1128. my word

  1129. a fire

  1130. is not

  1131. my word

  1132. a hammer

  1133. the word

  1134. of God

  1135. coupled with

  1136. the spirit

  1137. of God

  1138. is going

  1139. to help

  1140. Tim

  1141. Knoyer

  1142. be a

  1143. little

  1144. less

  1145. inclined

  1146. to do

  1147. and say

  1148. and think

  1149. some of

  1150. the things

  1151. that I

  1152. do

  1153. my point

  1154. the larger

  1155. focus is

  1156. that silence

  1157. is not

  1158. normal

  1159. and it

  1160. would have

  1161. been normal

  1162. for Jesus

  1163. to defend

  1164. himself

  1165. secondly

  1166. we do

  1167. have many

  1168. Bible

  1169. examples

  1170. of individuals

  1171. who when

  1172. they're falsely

  1173. accused

  1174. they went

  1175. ahead and

  1176. had something

  1177. to say

  1178. Acts chapter

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1179. 4

  1180. Peter and

  1181. John

  1182. before the

  1183. Sanhedrin

  1184. they had

  1185. something to

  1186. say

  1187. how is it

  1188. that these

  1189. unlearned

  1190. men

  1191. are so

  1192. proficient

  1193. well

  1194. they figured

  1195. out they

  1196. had been

  1197. with Jesus

  1198. I think

  1199. about

  1200. Stephen

  1201. in Acts

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  1202. chapter 7

  1203. brought with

  1204. false

  1205. accusation

  1206. and any

  1207. of you

  1208. who have

  1209. read

  1210. Stephen's

  1211. little

  1212. brief

  1213. sermon

  1214. know

  1215. that he

  1216. starts out

  1217. with just

  1218. a wonderful

  1219. recitation

  1220. of Old

  1221. Testament

  1222. history

  1223. and he

  1224. ends up

  1225. what does

  1226. he do

  1227. you hard

  1228. hearted

  1229. stiff

  1230. neck

  1231. he lets

  1232. them know

  1233. that they

  1234. are having

  1235. a problem

  1236. with sin

  1237. and it

  1238. just

  1239. turned

  1240. them

  1241. angry

  1242. well we

  1243. think about

  1244. Paul

  1245. falsely

  1246. accused

  1247. he defended

  1248. himself

  1249. and I

  1250. think about

  1251. the passage

  1252. in Luke

    Luke 12:11

  1253. chapter 12

  1254. verse 11

  1255. and 12

  1256. let's look

  1257. at it

  1258. just for

  1259. a moment

  1260. you're in

  1261. Luke 22

  1262. so turn

  1263. back

  1264. just for

  1265. a second

  1266. Luke

    Luke 12:11

  1267. chapter 12

  1268. verse 11

  1269. and 12

  1270. here's what

  1271. it says

  1272. and when

  1273. they bring

  1274. you before

  1275. the synagogues

  1276. and the

  1277. rulers

  1278. and the

  1279. authorities

  1280. do not

  1281. be anxious

  1282. about how

  1283. you should

  1284. defend

  1285. yourself

  1286. or what

  1287. you should

  1288. say

  1289. a little

  1290. comment

  1291. here

  1292. probably

  1293. most of

  1294. us here

  1295. when we

  1296. know we're

  1297. going into

  1298. an adversarial

  1299. conversation

  1300. we write

  1301. down

  1302. I hope

  1303. some of

  1304. the things

  1305. that we

  1306. think

  1307. need to

  1308. be said

  1309. am I

  1310. right

  1311. I used

  1312. to put

  1313. them on

  1314. a little

  1315. three by

  1316. five card

  1317. or a little

  1318. note

  1319. somewhere

  1320. so I

  1321. knew

  1322. where I

  1323. was

  1324. and I

  1325. knew

  1326. what

  1327. I

  1328. thought

  1329. needed

  1330. to be

  1331. said

  1332. at the

  1333. moment

  1334. after I

  1335. prayed

  1336. and

  1337. thought

  1338. about

  1339. it

  1340. and

  1341. Jesus

  1342. says

  1343. by the

  1344. way

  1345. when

  1346. you're

  1347. in

  1348. this

  1349. situation

  1350. don't

  1351. fret

  1352. about

  1353. it

  1354. why

  1355. for

  1356. the

  1357. Holy

  1358. Spirit

  1359. will

  1360. teach

  1361. you

  1362. in

  1363. that

  1364. very

  1365. hour

  1366. what

  1367. you

  1368. is

  1369. this

  1370. here's

  1371. Jesus

  1372. who

  1373. was

  1374. quiet

  1375. contrary

  1376. to the

  1377. general

  1378. nature

  1379. of

  1380. humanity

  1381. number

  1382. two

  1383. he

  1384. was

  1385. quiet

  1386. contrary

  1387. to

  1388. the

  1389. passage

  1390. in

  1391. Luke

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  1392. chapter

  1393. 12

  1394. that

  1395. tells

  1396. us

  1397. when

  1398. you're

  1399. brought

  1400. in

  1401. and

  1676. for

  1677. a

  1678. Bible

  1679. answer

  1680. there's

  1681. something

  1682. wrong

  1712. we

  1717. something

  1718. wrong

  1721. why

  1722. we're

  1723. in

  1724. the

  1725. mess

  1726. we

  1727. are

  1728. so

  1729. we

  1730. find

  1731. that

  1732. Jesus

  1733. was

  1734. quiet

  1735. and we

  1736. have

  1737. to

  1738. ask

  1739. why

  1740. well

  1741. first

  1742. I

  1743. want

  1744. you

  1745. to

  1746. know

  1747. that

  1748. Jesus

  1749. never

  1750. said

  1755. didn't

  1756. tell

  1757. him

  1758. to

  1759. say

  1760. that's

  1761. pretty

  1762. striking

  1763. isn't

  1764. it

  1765. how

  1766. many

  1767. of

  1768. you

  1769. would

  1770. like

  1771. that

  1772. to

  1774. true

  1775. of

  1776. you

  1777. Jesus

  1778. never

  1779. said

  1780. anything

  1794. nothing

  1795. of my

  1798. but speak

  1799. just

  1800. as

  1801. the

  1802. father

  1803. taught

  1804. me

  1805. sometimes

  1806. I have

  1807. to

  1808. ask

  1809. myself

  1810. after

  1811. I've

  1812. said

  1813. something

  1814. and

  1815. you

  1816. know

  1817. the

  1820. goes

  1821. off

  1852. it

  1853. that

  1854. in the

  1855. Bible

  1856. Jesus

  1857. never

  1863. didn't

  1864. instruct

  1865. him

  1866. to

  1867. say

  1868. hey

  1869. here's

  1870. another

  1871. passage

  1872. John

    John 12:49

  1873. chapter

  1874. 12

  1875. verse

  1876. 49

  1877. and

  1878. 50

  1879. I

  1880. have

  1881. not

  1882. spoken

  1883. on

  1884. my

  1885. own

  1886. authority

  1887. but

  1888. the

  1889. father

  1890. who

  1891. sent

  1892. me

  1893. has

  1894. himself

  1895. given

  1896. me

  1897. a

  1898. commandment

  1899. what

  1900. to

  1901. say

  1902. and

  1903. what

  1904. to

  1905. speak

  1906. and

  1907. by

  1908. the

  1909. way

  1910. the

  1911. best

  1912. way

  1913. to

  1914. know

  1915. what

  1916. the

  1917. father

  1918. wants

  1919. you

  1920. to

  1921. say

  1922. are

  1923. you

  1924. worried

  1925. for

  1926. this

  1927. one

  1928. is

  1929. by

  1930. being

  1931. sure

  1932. that

  1933. what

  1934. you

  1935. want

  1936. to

  1937. say

  1938. is

  1939. corroborated

  1940. supported

  1941. confirmed

  1942. in the

  1943. scriptures

  1944. right

  1945. I

  1946. can't

  1947. tell you

  1948. how many

  1949. harebrained

  1950. ideas

  1951. I've

  1952. had

  1953. that

  1954. I

  1955. thought

  1956. were

  1957. just

  1958. so

  1959. full

  1960. of

  1961. righteousness

  1962. and

  1963. later

  1964. on

  1965. I

  1966. thought

  1967. you

  1968. know

  1969. what

  1970. there

  1971. is

  1972. not

  1973. a

  1974. Bible

  1975. verse

  1976. that

  1977. comes

  1978. close

  1979. Jesus

  1980. said

  1981. I

  1982. never

  1983. said

  1984. a

  1985. thing

  1986. that

  1987. my father

  1988. didn't

  1989. want

  1990. me

  1991. to

  1992. say

  1993. and

  1994. we've

  1995. all

  1996. been

  1997. there

  1998. haven't

  1999. we

  2000. one of

  2001. the

  2002. things

  2003. that

  2004. happens

  2005. in

  2006. human

  2007. life

  2008. is

  2009. after

  2010. we

  2011. say

  2012. something

  2013. we

  2014. sometimes

  2015. particularly

  2016. in

  2017. believers

  2018. lives

  2019. I

  2020. want

  2021. you

  2022. to

  2023. understand

  2024. that

  2025. believers

  2026. have

  2027. this

  2028. little

  2029. alarm

  2030. bell

  2031. that

  2032. goes

  2033. off

  2034. am I

  2035. right

  2036. it's

  2037. like

  2038. oh

  2039. I'm

  2040. not

  2041. sure

  2042. about

  2043. that

  2044. one

  2045. and

  2046. then

  2047. you

  2048. get

  2049. an

  2050. argument

  2051. with

  2052. yourself

  2053. well

  2054. I

  2055. wouldn't

  2056. have

  2057. said

  2058. what

  2059. I

  2060. did

  2061. if

  2062. he

  2063. hadn't

  2064. said

  2065. what

  2066. he

  2067. did

  2068. well

  2069. it

  2070. needed

  2071. to

  2072. be

  2073. said

  2074. it

  2075. was

  2076. true

  2077. you

  2078. know

  2079. I

  2080. you

  2081. know

  2082. what

  2083. I'm

  2084. saying

  2085. here's

  2086. Jesus

  2087. I

  2088. never

  2089. have

  2090. said

  2091. anything

  2092. that

  2093. my

  2094. father

  2095. didn't

  2096. want

  2097. me

  2098. to

  2099. say

  2100. I

  2101. want

  2102. to

  2103. be

  2104. like

  2105. that

  2106. so

  2107. we

  2108. can

  2109. safely

  2110. say

  2111. if

  2112. Jesus

  2113. was

  2114. quiet

  2115. now

  2116. it

  2117. was

  2118. because

  2119. the

  2120. father

  2121. wanted

  2122. him

  2123. to

  2124. be

  2125. quiet

  2126. we

  2127. do

  2128. know

  2129. secondly

  2130. that

  2131. Jesus

  2132. was

  2133. quite

  2134. aware

  2135. that

  2136. what

  2137. he

  2138. could

  2139. say

  2140. wouldn't

  2141. change

  2142. people's

  2143. hearts

  2144. anyway

  2145. back

  2146. up

  2147. you're

  2148. in

  2149. Luke

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  2150. chapter

  2151. 23

  2152. but

  2153. just

  2154. go

  2155. back

  2156. if

  2157. you

  2158. would

  2159. to

  2160. Luke

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  2161. chapter

  2162. 22

  2163. and

  2164. read

  2165. what

  2166. we

  2167. find

  2168. out

  2169. there

  2170. in

  2171. verse

  2172. 67

  2173. if

  2174. you

  2175. are

  2176. the

  2177. Christ

  2178. they

  2179. said

  2180. tell

  2181. us

  2182. but

  2183. he

  2184. said

  2185. to

  2186. them

  2187. if

  2188. I

  2189. tell

  2190. you

  2191. you

  2192. will

  2193. not

  2194. believe

  2195. and

  2196. if

  2197. I

  2198. ask

  2199. you

  2200. you

  2201. will

  2202. not

  2203. answer

  2204. how

  2205. many

  2206. of

  2207. you

  2208. on

  2209. occasion

  2210. have

  2211. known

  2212. that

  2213. nothing

  2214. you

  2215. say

  2216. is

  2217. going

  2218. to

  2219. make

  2220. any

  2221. difference

  2222. and

  2223. swine

  2224. lest

  2225. they

  2226. turn

  2227. and

  2228. rend

  2229. you

  2230. there

  2231. are

  2232. times

  2233. that

  2234. getting

  2235. in a

  2236. dispute

  2237. is

  2238. prompted

  2239. by

  2240. individuals

  2241. who are

  2242. quite

  2243. full

  2244. of

  2245. their

  2246. own

  2247. righteousness

  2248. and

  2249. believe

  2250. that

  2251. they

  2252. are

  2253. the

  2254. end

  2255. of

  2256. persuasion

  2257. there's

  2258. a time

  2259. to be

  2260. quiet

  2261. and

  2262. Jesus

  2263. here

  2264. in the

  2265. text

  2266. made

  2267. it

  2268. clear

  2269. that

  2270. there

  2271. was

  2272. a

  2273. time

  2274. to

  2275. be

  2276. quiet

  2277. there's

  2278. something

  2279. even

  2280. more

  2281. important

  2282. than

  2283. those

  2284. two

  2285. things

  2286. though

  2287. and

  2288. I

  2289. want

  2290. you

  2291. to

  2292. understand

  2293. that

  2294. that

  2295. behind

  2296. this

  2297. business

  2298. of

  2299. being

  2300. quiet

  2301. in

  2302. a

  2303. very

  2304. unusual

  2305. and

  2306. challenging

  2307. time

  2308. is

  2309. the

  2310. fact

  2311. that

  2312. Jesus

  2313. submitted

  2314. to

  2315. the

  2316. plan

  2317. of

  2318. salvation

  2319. he

  2320. knew

  2321. what

  2322. was

  2323. going

  2324. on

  2325. he

  2326. knew

  2327. why

  2328. he

  2329. had

  2330. come

  2331. and

  2332. he

  2333. knew

  2334. what

  2335. needed

  2336. to be

  2337. done

  2338. and

  2339. so

  2340. I

  2341. ask

  2342. you

  2343. when

  2344. you

  2345. stop

  2346. and

  2347. think

  2348. about

  2349. Jesus

  2350. being

  2351. quiet

  2352. in

  2353. this

  2354. is

  2355. your

  2356. heart

  2357. drawn

  2358. to

  2359. consider

  2360. that

  2361. I

  2362. know

  2363. why

  2364. he

  2365. was

  2366. quiet

  2367. he

  2368. had

  2369. me

  2370. in

  2371. mind

  2372. he

  2373. was

  2374. thinking

  2375. about

  2376. the

  2377. cross

  2378. he

  2379. was

  2380. thinking

  2381. about

  2382. my

  2383. redemption

  2384. he

  2385. was

  2386. thinking

  2387. about

  2388. the

  2389. plan

  2390. of

  2391. the

  2392. father

  2393. for

  2394. all

  2395. of

  2396. eternity

  2397. to

  2398. bring

  2399. about

  2400. the

  2401. salvation

  2402. of

  2403. individuals

  2404. and

  2405. he

  2406. knew

  2407. how

  2408. this

  2409. was

  2410. supposed

  2411. to

  2412. play

  2413. out

  2414. and

  2415. there

  2416. was

  2417. no

  2418. reason

  2419. to

  2420. interfere

  2421. if

  2422. you

  2423. think

  2424. with me

  2425. back

  2426. through

  2427. the

  2428. history

  2429. of

  2430. scripture

  2431. and

  2432. I

  2433. take

  2434. you

  2435. back

  2436. just

  2437. for a

  2438. moment

  2439. to

  2440. Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  2441. chapter

  2442. 3

  2443. where

  2444. sin

  2445. entered

  2446. the

  2447. garden

  2448. you

  2449. will

  2450. remember

  2451. that

  2452. after

  2453. sin

  2454. entered

  2455. the

  2456. garden

  2457. God

  2458. provided

  2459. skins

  2460. and

  2461. where

  2462. do

  2463. skins

  2464. come

  2465. from

  2466. animals

  2467. now

  2468. we

  2469. don't

  2470. know

  2471. for a

  2472. fact

  2473. what

  2474. the

  2475. first

  2476. animal

  2477. was

  2478. because

  2479. it

  2480. doesn't

  2481. tell

  2482. us

  2483. and

  2484. when

  2485. the

  2486. scripture

  2487. doesn't

  2488. tell

  2489. us

  2490. we

  2491. probably

  2492. do

  2493. well

  2494. not

  2495. to

  2496. add

  2497. our

  2498. own

  2499. thinking

  2500. to

  2501. it

  2502. would

  2503. you

  2504. agree

  2505. with

  2506. that

  2507. but

  2508. something

  2509. had

  2510. to die

  2511. to

  2512. provide

  2513. a

  2514. covering

  2515. we

  2516. also

  2517. know

  2518. !

  2519. that

  2520. when

  2521. God

  2522. said

  2523. to

  2524. Abraham

  2525. I

  2526. want

  2527. you

  2528. to

  2529. take

  2530. your

  2531. son

  2532. up

  2533. that

  2534. mountain

  2535. and

  2536. I

  2537. want

  2538. you

  2539. to

  2540. sacrifice

  2541. him

  2542. as

  2543. Isaac

  2544. and

  2545. Abraham

  2546. are

  2547. marching

  2548. up

  2549. the

  2550. mountain

  2551. remember

  2552. Isaac

  2553. says

  2554. I

  2555. get

  2556. it

  2557. here's

  2558. the

  2559. fire

  2560. here's

  2561. the

  2562. wood

  2563. where

  2564. where's

  2565. the

  2566. lamb

  2567. right

  2568. what

  2569. does

  2570. Abraham

  2571. say

  2572. God

  2573. will

  2574. provide

  2575. and

  2576. God

  2577. provides

  2578. a

  2579. lamb

  2580. when

  2581. the

  2582. nation

  2583. of

  2584. Israel

  2585. in

  2586. slavery

  2587. in

  2588. Egypt

  2589. was

  2590. told

  2591. that

  2592. every

  2593. firstborn

  2594. was

  2595. going

  2596. to

  2597. die

  2598. there

  2599. was

  2600. one

  2601. remedy

  2602. it

  2603. was

  2604. blood

  2605. on

  2606. the

  2607. doorpost

  2608. and

  2609. on

  2610. the

  2611. lentils

  2612. when

  2613. John

  2614. the

  2615. Baptist

  2616. saw

  2617. Jesus

  2618. coming

  2619. do you

  2620. know

  2621. what

  2622. he

  2623. said

  2624. behold

  2625. behold

  2626. the

  2627. lamb

  2628. of

  2629. God

  2630. that

  2631. takes

  2632. away

  2633. the

  2634. sin

  2635. of

  2636. the

  2637. world

  2638. turn

  2639. in your

  2640. Bibles

  2641. now if

  2642. you would

  2643. back

  2644. to

  2645. Isaiah

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  2646. chapter

  2647. 53

  2648. why

  2649. was

  2650. Jesus

  2651. quiet

  2652. and

  2653. at

  2654. your

  2655. own

  2656. leisure

  2657. when

  2658. you're

  2659. home

  2660. later

  2661. I

  2662. want

  2663. you

  2664. to

  2665. read

  2666. from

  2667. Isaiah

    Isaiah 52:13

  2668. chapter

  2669. 52

  2670. verse

  2671. 13

  2672. all the

  2673. way to

  2674. the end

  2675. of the

  2676. chapter

  2677. and just

  2678. do that

  2679. with a

  2680. quiet spirit

  2681. and revel

  2682. in the sweetness

  2683. of the Lord

  2684. Jesus

  2685. but in

  2686. verse 4

  2687. surely he

  2688. has borne

  2689. our griefs

  2690. and carried

  2691. our sorrows

  2692. yet we

  2693. esteemed

  2694. him

  2695. stricken

  2696. smitten

  2697. by God

  2698. and afflicted

  2699. he was

  2700. pierced

  2701. for our

  2702. transgressions

  2703. he was crushed

  2704. for our

  2705. iniquities

  2706. upon him

  2707. was the

  2708. chastisement

  2709. that brought

  2710. us peace

  2711. and with

  2712. his wounds

  2713. we are

  2714. healed

  2715. all we

  2716. like sheep

  2717. have gone

  2718. astray

  2719. we were

  2720. turned

  2721. everyone

  2722. to his

  2723. own

  2724. way

  2725. and the

  2726. Lord

  2727. has laid

  2728. on him

  2729. the

  2730. iniquity

  2731. of us

  2732. all

  2733. he was

  2734. oppressed

  2735. and he

  2736. was afflicted

  2737. yet he

  2738. opened

  2739. not his

  2740. mouth

  2741. like a

  2742. lamb

  2743. that was

  2744. led

  2745. to the

  2746. slaughter

  2747. and like

  2748. a sheep

  2749. that before

  2750. it shears

  2751. is silent

  2752. so he

  2753. opened

  2754. not

  2755. his

  2756. mouth

  2757. probably

  2758. one of

  2759. the most

  2760. striking

  2761. portions

  2762. of Isaiah

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  2763. chapter 53

  2764. is verse

  2765. 10

  2766. I think

  2767. in the

  2768. King

  2769. James

  2770. it says

  2771. for it

  2772. pleased

  2773. the

  2774. Lord

  2775. to

  2776. bruise

  2777. him

  2778. I

  2779. think

  2780. that

  2781. God

  2782. the

  2783. father

  2784. was

  2785. willing

  2786. that

  2787. his

  2788. son

  2789. should

  2790. die

  2791. for me

  2792. it's

  2793. overwhelming

  2794. so how

  2795. does that

  2796. fit

  2797. today

  2798. well you're

  2799. here this

  2800. morning as

  2801. one who

  2802. knows the

  2803. Lord Jesus

  2804. and your

  2805. heart just

  2806. kind of

  2807. thrills when

  2808. you stop

  2809. and think

  2810. that's my

  2811. savior

  2812. who loves

  2813. me

  2814. and someday

  2815. I'm going to

  2816. see him face

  2817. to face

  2818. there may be

  2819. some of you

  2820. that this

  2821. morning you

  2822. have to

  2823. admit

  2824. like in

  2825. revelation

  2826. where it

  2827. says

  2828. to the

  2829. church at

  2830. Ephesus

  2831. you've lost

  2832. your first

  2833. love

  2834. and this

  2835. morning the

  2836. truth of

  2837. the matter

  2838. is your

  2839. heart is

  2840. just

  2841. indifferent

  2842. to the

  2843. sweetness of

  2844. the savior

  2845. that in

  2846. eternity

  2847. will occupy

  2848. all of

  2849. your thinking

  2850. and your

  2851. joy

  2852. and you're

  2853. sitting here

  2854. saying you

  2855. know there's

  2856. something wrong

  2857. with me

  2858. and I don't

  2859. want to

  2860. stay this

  2861. way

  2862. well there's

  2863. a remedy

  2864. cry out to

  2865. the Lord

  2866. and say

  2867. look do

  2868. something about

  2869. this stone

  2870. cold heart

  2871. you know I

  2872. can mock

  2873. a movie

  2874. where someone

  2875. stands up

  2876. and says

  2877. mirror mirror

  2878. on the wall

  2879. who's the

  2880. fairest of

  2881. them all

  2882. but I am

  2883. caught in

  2884. that sin

  2885. and I

  2886. wanted to

  2887. change

  2888. I can tell

  2889. you this

  2890. God answers

  2891. that kind

  2892. of prayer

  2893. there may

  2894. be some

  2895. of you

  2896. here that

  2897. do not

  2898. know

  2899. Christ

  2900. and I

  2901. can tell

  2902. you you

  2903. know full

  2904. well what

  2905. the bitterness

  2906. is of being

  2907. a self

  2908. focused

  2909. unhappy

  2910. insecure

  2911. guilt ridden

  2912. person and

  2913. there is no

  2914. remedy for

  2915. your soul

  2916. except in

  2917. Jesus

  2918. let's close

  2919. in prayer

  2920. father

  2921. let your

  2922. word

  2923. fall

  2924. on fertile

  2925. soil

  2926. to the

  2927. glory

  2928. of Christ

  2929. amen
