    Luke 24 chapter mention

  5. We're in our home stretch, really,

  6. this final chapter of the Gospel of Luke.

  7. We've been working through Luke for the last four years,

  8. off and on.

  9. And we come now at last to this final chapter,

  10. which is perhaps the most exciting

  11. and the most important chapter in the Gospel of Luke

  12. is the culmination of Christ's ministry

  13. and this resurrection that we'll look at this morning

  14. comes to meet us and remind us of who Jesus really is.

  15. If you joined us just a couple of days ago on Good Friday,

  16. we had a chance just to share with you

  17. some of the reasons why the cross had power.

  18. What was it about the cross that was necessary

  19. and what did the cross accomplish for us?

  20. And maybe those of you who've been part of the church

  21. for a long time, you've heard this message,

  22. you've heard this text preached,

  23. maybe for decades, time and time and time again.

  24. But it's been my prayer this morning

  25. that we would come to this text

  26. and be reminded in a fresh way of the wonder

  27. and the essential nature of the resurrection.

  28. Why does the resurrection matter?

  29. Does the resurrection matter?

  30. Was it really important?

  31. If the cross accomplished all that it accomplished,

  32. was the resurrection necessary?

  33. Of course, the resurrection was necessary.

  34. And because the resurrection is necessary

  35. and kind of lays that final foundation

  36. of true hope in God,

  37. it has been that truth,

  38. that doctrine that has been assaulted

  39. going all the way back to the beginning.

  40. From the very first century,

  41. you remember in this final week

  42. of Jesus' public ministry there in Jerusalem,

  43. Jesus is actually confronted there

  44. by a group of Sadducees who,

  45. if you remember,

  46. they didn't believe in the resurrection.

  47. And of course, as the church got started,

  48. the doctrine and the truth of the resurrection

  49. had been assaulted and had been put down

  50. from the very beginning.

  51. The apostle Paul deals with this

  52. even in this message to the Jews and the Gentiles.

  53. In 1 Corinthians 1, verse 23,

    1 Corinthians 1:23

  54. he draws attention to it.

  55. He says,

  56. To the Jews, this gospel was a stumbling block

  57. into the Greeks' foolishness.

  58. This crucified Savior that was resurrected from the grave

  59. was a stumbling block for Jews

  60. and was absolute insanity for the Gentiles.

  61. Later, in his letter,

  62. Paul's letter to the church of Corinth,

  63. he spends an entire chapter,

  64. chapter 15,

  65. trying to help the church

  66. understand the significance of the resurrection.

  67. Did it matter?

  68. We'll come back to this chapter a couple of times

  69. throughout our time this morning,

  70. but in verses 12 and 13 of 1 Corinthians 15,

  71. he says this,

  72. Now, if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead,

  73. how can some of you say

  74. there is no resurrection of the dead?

  75. But if there is no resurrection of the dead,

  76. then not even Christ has been raised.

  77. Then Paul's address to the unbelievers in Athens,

  78. in Acts chapter 17, verses 31 and 32,

    Acts 17:31

  79. we find the apostle Paul in the Areopagus.

  80. This is a gathering place of the elite thinkers,

  81. the philosophers of that day,

  82. and the apostle Paul is proclaiming the gospel,

  83. and he says in verses 31 and 32,

  84. he says,

  85. He has fixed a day

  86. on which he will judge the world in righteousness

  87. by a man whom he has appointed,

  88. and of this he has given assurance

  89. to all by raising him from the dead.

  90. Now, when they heard of the resurrection of the dead,

  91. some mocked, but others said,

  92. We will hear you again about this.

  93. The essential nature of the resurrection

  94. built into the gospel,

  95. and even though it was a stumbling block for the Gentiles,

  96. the apostle Paul knew it was necessary.

  97. Of course, the church of Thessalonica,

  98. the hope of the resurrection,

  99. helped them endure the hardship that they would face.

  100. And then to the church of Rome,

  101. Paul reminded them of this doctrine

  102. that was essential for salvation

  103. in Romans 10, verse 9, when he says,

    Romans 10:9

  104. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord

  105. and believe in your heart

  106. that God raised him from the dead,

  107. you will be saved.

  108. A belief in a confidence,

  109. a knowledge, and a faith in the resurrection

  110. is essential for salvation.

  111. So it should be no surprise then

  112. that this truth, this doctrine

  113. of the resurrection of Christ

  114. has been assaulted from the very beginning.

  115. And the church has been confronted

  116. by those various heresies

  117. that have sought to bombard the church

  118. and try to strip it away from this essential truth.

  119. There was a heresy known as docetism

  120. in the first and second century

  121. that claimed that Jesus only had a physical body,

  122. and so thus suffering death

  123. and resurrection was only an illusion.

  124. This, in the second century,

  125. transitioned to the Gnostic heresy,

  126. which claimed that the physical world is evil

  127. and that salvation comes through secret

  128. or spiritual knowledge.

  129. For them, the resurrection was just symbolic.

  130. It was not physical.

  131. So it stripped the resurrection of any power.

  132. Arianism, in the fourth century,

  133. claimed that Jesus was a created being,

  134. not co-eternal with God,

  135. and thus, while not directly denying the resurrection,

  136. it robbed the resurrection of its purpose in power.

  137. From the very beginning,

  138. from the first century on,

  139. the church has dealt with this assault

  140. to the resurrection.

  141. But I want you to understand this morning,

  142. the resurrection matters.

  143. The resurrection matters.

  144. And because of the resurrection,

  145. we can have hope.

  146. Paul describes this again

  147. in 1 Corinthians 15, verse 17,

    1 Corinthians 15:17

  148. when he says,

  149. If Christ has not been raised,

  150. your faith is futile,

  151. and you are still in your sins.

  152. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ

  153. have perished.

  154. If in Christ we have hope,

  155. in this life only,

  156. we are of all people the most to be pitied.

  157. Without the resurrection,

  158. Paul says in this chapter,

  159. 1 Corinthians 15,

  160. your preaching is in vain.

  161. Your faith is in vain.

  162. Your hope is in vain.

  163. If your hope is in this life only,

  164. then let's eat and drink,

  165. because tomorrow we're going to die.

  166. What's the point?

  167. This morning I want us to understand,

  168. and we will see from our passage today,

  169. five reasons,

  170. and there are many,

  171. but this morning,

  172. we're just going to look at five reasons

  173. why the resurrection matters.

  174. So if you're there with me,

  175. Luke chapter 24,

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  176. I'm going to read the first 12 verses,

  177. and then we'll begin our time this morning.

  178. It says,

  179. But on the first day of the week,

  180. at early dawn,

  181. they went to the tomb,

  182. taking the spices they had prepared,

  183. and they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

  184. But when they went in,

  185. they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

  186. While they were perplexed about this,

  187. behold,

  188. two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.

  189. And as they were frightened

  190. and bowed their faces to the ground,

  191. the men said to them,

  192. Why do you seek the living among the dead?

  193. He's not here,

  194. but has risen.

  195. Remember how he told you,

  196. while he was still in Galilee,

  197. that the Son of Man must be delivered

  198. into the hands of sinful men,

  199. and be crucified,

  200. and on the third day rise.

  201. And they remembered his words.

  202. And returning from the tomb,

  203. they told all these things to the eleven,

  204. and to all the rest.

  205. That was Mary Magdalene,

  206. and Joanna,

  207. and Mary the mother of James,

  208. and the other women with them

  209. who told these things to the apostles.

  210. But these words seemed to them an idle tale,

  211. and they did not believe them.

  212. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb.

  213. Stooping and looking in,

  214. he saw the linen cloths by themselves.

  215. And he went home marveling

  216. at what had happened.

  217. The passage opens in these first three verses

  218. with this group of individuals.

  219. We find this personal pronoun,

  220. they, that's used in four different ways

  221. here in the first three verses.

  222. They went to the tomb.

  223. They found the stone rolled away.

  224. They went in.

  225. They did not find the body.

  226. Well, who is the they?

  227. We need to refer back

  228. to the previous chapter.

  229. In the last few verses,

  230. give us a clue

  231. who these individuals are.

  232. In Luke 23, verse 55,

    Luke 23:55

  233. it says,

  234. the women who had come with him from Galilee.

  235. And in 24, verse 10,

  236. we find Mary Magdalene, Joanna,

  237. Mary, the mother of James,

  238. and other women who were there.

  239. It's the women who came from Galilee

  240. who are there at the tomb.

  241. And they've already prepared for this day.

  242. As we find in Luke 23, verse 56,

    Luke 23:56

  243. it says,

  244. after having seen the tomb

  245. where Jesus was laid,

  246. they returned and prepared spices and ointment.

  247. They had seen how Joseph

  248. and Nicodemus had prepared the body in haste.

  249. And so they could do a proper burial,

  250. they also prepared over the next day and a half

  251. so they could be ready in devotion.

  252. And they come at early dawn,

  253. as we find here in Luke 24, 1.

  254. They come to prepare the body.

  255. Matthew says it was towards the dawn.

  256. The Gospel of Mark says,

  257. very early on the first day of the week,

  258. the sun had not yet risen.

  259. And John's account is,

  260. while it was still dark,

  261. somewhere between 3 o'clock in the morning

  262. and 6 o'clock in the morning,

  263. these women came in devotion to prepare the body.

  264. This is their last respects.

  265. They want to show honor to Jesus' body.

  266. But the last time they saw Jesus,

  267. there was a problem for them.

  268. A problem that we find in Matthew 27,

    Matthew 27:59–61

  269. verses 59 to 61.

  270. It says that Joseph took the body

  271. and wrapped it in clean linen,

  272. shrouded and laid it in his own new tomb,

  273. which he had cut out of the rock.

  274. And he rolled a great stone

  275. to the entrance of the tomb and went away.

  276. This becomes the burning question

  277. as we find in the Gospel of Mark.

  278. They ask themselves,

  279. who will roll away the stone from the tomb?

  280. But in Luke 24, verse 2, we see,

    Luke 24:2

  281. and they found the stone rolled away.

  282. Problem solved.

  283. Jesus raised from the dead.

  284. The stone was still intact.

  285. How he did not need the stone to be removed

  286. in order to leave the tomb,

  287. but we find from Matthew's account

  288. how that stone was rolled away.

  289. Matthew 28, verse 2, it says,

    Matthew 28:2

  290. And behold, there was a great earthquake,

  291. for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven

  292. and came and rolled back the stone

  293. and sat on it.

  294. Why was the stone rolled away?

  295. Well, the stone was rolled away

  296. to demonstrate and to prove

  297. that God's truth is accessible.

  298. God's truth is open.

  299. God's truth is available.

  300. God's truth is public.

  301. It was verifiable.

  302. It was open.

  303. Of course, Jesus' life in ministry

  304. were also accessible.

  305. But in the defining moment,

  306. which would validate his message

  307. and his ministry,

  308. in the culminating end of his life here

  309. in the resurrection,

  310. it was made public.

  311. And the reason for it to be made public

  312. was so that in this public spectacle,

  313. in confirmation of all that Jesus had said,

  314. Jesus and God is inviting those who would see

  315. to observe and believe.

  316. He's inviting those who, through faith,

  317. would see the evidence of all that Jesus had spoken,

  318. would look into this empty tomb,

  319. would remember his words,

  320. and would believe.

  321. The accessibility of this truth

  322. that was available to anyone

  323. who lived there in the first century.

  324. We know this was public

  325. because these women came.

  326. And they see and they observe for themselves

  327. that the stone is rolled away,

  328. the tomb is empty.

  329. We know it was public

  330. because Peter and John would come

  331. towards the latter part of this passage.

  332. They too would look in

  333. and marvel at the empty tomb.

  334. We know it was public

  335. because the soldiers saw it.

  336. We know this from Matthew's account.

  337. In Matthew 28, verse 11,

    Matthew 28:11

  338. it says,

  339. while they were going,

  340. behold, some of the guard went into the city

  341. and told the chief priests

  342. all that had taken place.

  343. We also know that this was public

  344. because the religious leaders

  345. would have seen it.

  346. In Matthew 28, verses 12 and 13,

    Matthew 28:12

  347. when they had assembled with the elders

  348. and had taken counsel,

  349. speaking of the chief priests,

  350. they gave a sufficient sum of money

  351. to the soldiers and said,

  352. tell the people,

  353. his disciples came by night

  354. and stole them away

  355. while we were asleep.

  356. They knew the tomb was empty,

  357. not only in hearing from the soldiers,

  358. but in confirming for themselves.

  359. They needed to manufacture a story,

  360. and this was the story they manufactured.

  361. We also know this is public

  362. because the people in Jerusalem

  363. would have seen it.

  364. In Matthew 28, 15,

  365. so the soldiers took the money

  366. and did as they were directed,

  367. and this story has been spread

  368. among the Jews to this day.

  369. Those who went and observed the tomb,

  370. those who heard this story

  371. would have propagated the same message.

  372. It was public.

  373. It was open.

  374. It was available.

  375. We also know it was public

  376. because Jesus would appear to Peter

  377. and then to the 12

  378. and 500 disciples at once,

  379. as we find from 1 Corinthians 15.

  380. It says,

  381. For I delivered to you

  382. as of first importance

  383. what I received,

  384. that Christ died for our sins

  385. in accordance with the Scriptures.

  386. that he was buried,

  387. that he was raised on the third day

  388. in accordance with the Scriptures,

  389. and that he appeared to Cephas

  390. and to the 12.

  391. Then he appeared

  392. to more than 500 brothers at one time,

  393. most of whom are still alive,

  394. though some have fallen asleep.

  395. Then he appeared to James,

  396. then to all the apostles.

  397. Last of all,

  398. as to one untimely born,

  399. he appeared to me.

  400. The resurrection proves

  401. that the truth of God,

  402. his resurrection especially,

  403. is public.

  404. It's open.

  405. It's available.

  406. It's accessible.

  407. And it invites the observer,

  408. those who would understand

  409. and learn the details

  410. of his resurrection,

  411. it invites us to believe.

  412. It invites us to have faith.

  413. Second, we see in verses 4 and 5,

  414. the resurrection matters

  415. because it proves

  416. that Christ's sacrifice

  417. was acceptable.

  418. His sacrifice was acceptable.

  419. Notice with me in verse 4.

  420. While they were perplexed,

  421. speaking about the women,

  422. behold, two men stood by them

  423. in dazzling apparel.

  424. And as they were frightened

  425. and bowed their faces to the ground,

  426. the men said to them,

  427. why do you seek

  428. the living among the dead?

  429. He is not here,

  430. but he has risen.

  431. The women have made their way

  432. to the tomb.

  433. It's a small enclosure

  434. that was cut out of the rock.

  435. And so they make their way

  436. into the tomb

  437. to get a closer look.

  438. And to their amazement,

  439. the tomb is empty.

  440. And then all of a sudden,

  441. two men in dazzling robes

  442. come and are standing by them.

  443. This word for dazzling

  444. is the word to glisten,

  445. to flash, to gleam like lightning.

  446. It's the same word

  447. that Jesus uses of himself

  448. when he speaks of the lightning

  449. that's going to streak

  450. across the sky

  451. at the coming of the Son of Man.

  452. It's going to be obvious.

  453. This brilliance

  454. in the wee hours

  455. of the morning

  456. certainly would have caught

  457. these women off guard

  458. and struck fear into them.

  459. And as they are afraid,

  460. they fall to the floor

  461. in recognition

  462. of the presence

  463. of these heavenly messengers

  464. and they bow their face

  465. to the floor.

  466. They know immediately

  467. that these are angels.

  468. There they are

  469. in the presence

  470. of this tomb.

  471. They had been present

  472. in the tomb

  473. just as they were present

  474. to the shepherds

  475. there at Christ's birth.

  476. At Christ's birth

  477. and now

  478. at Christ's resurrection.

  479. Remember,

  480. at his birth,

  481. the angels would sing

  482. on the hillside,

  483. glory to God

  484. in the highest

  485. and on earth,

  486. peace,

  487. goodwill

  488. to men.

  489. The angels

  490. who represented

  491. God,

  492. his message,

  493. who have now come

  494. to make the words

  495. of Christ known.

  496. They have ministered

  497. to Christ

  498. throughout his ministry.

  499. Gabriel, remember,

  500. he came to Mary

  501. at the very beginning

  502. to announce

  503. the birth of Christ.

  504. And then, of course,

  505. the angels

  506. who announced

  507. the birth

  508. of Christ

  509. to the shepherds.

  510. The angel

  511. who ministered

  512. to Christ

  513. at his temptation

  514. in the 40 days

  515. in the wilderness.

  516. And then the angel

  517. who strengthened Christ

  518. there in the garden

  519. of Gethsemane.

  520. there before

  521. his crucifixion.

  522. And here again,

  523. the angels are here

  524. to carry a message

  525. and to minister

  526. the message

  527. in the service

  528. to God.

  529. Jesus,

  530. who was the beloved son

  531. and whom the father

  532. was well pleased.

  533. But on the cross,

  534. he had endured

  535. the wrath of God

  536. for sin.

  537. And Jesus would cry,

  538. my God,

  539. my God,

  540. why have you

  541. forsaken me?

  542. And the question

  543. on the cross,

  544. perhaps,

  545. in the minds

  546. of those

  547. who were standing

  548. there would be,

  549. is this the end?

  550. Has God forsaken

  551. Christ forever?

  552. And the angels

  553. are here,

  554. the servants

  555. of the Most High

  556. who are serving

  557. Christ again,

  558. now,

  559. as messengers

  560. of his word.

  561. And Jesus'

  562. sacrifice

  563. was acceptable.

  564. and here

  565. are those angels

  566. demonstrating

  567. in a visible

  568. way

  569. that the service

  570. and sacrifice

  571. of Christ

  572. was accepted

  573. by God.

  574. We find from

  575. Ephesians 5,

    Ephesians 5:2

  576. verse 2,

  577. it says,

  578. and walk in love

  579. as Christ loved

  580. us and gave

  581. himself up

  582. for us,

  583. a fragrant

  584. offering

  585. and a sacrifice

  586. to God.

  587. Christ's sacrifice

  588. was well-pleasing.

  589. It was acceptable

  590. to God.

  591. And in Hebrews

    Hebrews 9:11

  592. chapter 9,

  593. verses 11 and 12,

  594. it says,

  595. but when Christ

  596. appeared

  597. as a high priest

  598. of the good things

  599. that have come,

  600. then through

  601. the greater

  602. and more perfect

  603. tent,

  604. not made with hands

  605. that is not

  606. of his creation,

  607. he entered once

  608. for all

  609. into the holy places,

  610. not by means

  611. of the blood

  612. of goats

  613. and calves,

  614. but by the means

  615. of his own blood,

  616. thus securing

  617. an eternal redemption.

  618. How was that possible?

  619. Well,

  620. it was possible

  621. because the sacrifice

  622. of Christ,

  623. this once-for-all

  624. offering

  625. of the precious

  626. blood of Christ

  627. was accepted

  628. by God.

  629. The resurrection

  630. proves

  631. the accessibility

  632. of truth.

  633. The resurrection

  634. proves the

  635. acceptability

  636. of Christ's

  637. sacrifice.

  638. And in verses

  639. 6 and 7,

  640. we see the resurrection

  641. matters because it

  642. proved that Christ's

  643. word was dependable.

  644. His word

  645. was dependable.

  646. Notice in verse 6,

  647. it says,

  648. he is not here,

  649. but has risen.

  650. Remember how he told you

  651. while he was still

  652. in Galilee.

  653. The son of man

  654. must be delivered

  655. into the hands

  656. of sinful men

  657. and be crucified

  658. and on the third day

  659. rise.

  660. Jesus had prophesied

  661. at least on three

  662. occasions that he

  663. would be delivered

  664. over,

  665. that he would be

  666. crucified,

  667. that he would die

  668. and rise again.

  669. and according to

  670. his very word

  671. to these women

  672. there in Galilee,

  673. Jesus had done

  674. exactly as he said.

  675. The word

  676. of the prophets

  677. and the word

  678. of Christ

  679. were dependable.

  680. Paul,

  681. in speaking to the Jews

  682. in Antioch

  683. and Pisidia,

  684. would use the

  685. prophets

  686. in his

  687. gospel

  688. proclamation

  689. to help affirm

  690. that it was the

  691. prophets who would

  692. talk about

  693. this resurrection.

  694. In Acts chapter 13

    Acts 13:34–35

  695. verses 34 to 35,

  696. the apostle Paul

  697. in his sermon

  698. says this,

  699. and as for the fact

  700. that he raised him

  701. from the dead,

  702. no more to return

  703. to corruption,

  704. he has spoken

  705. in this way,

  706. I will give you

  707. the holy

  708. and sure blessing

  709. of David.

  710. Therefore,

  711. he says,

  712. also in another psalm,

  713. you will not let

  714. your holy one

  715. see corruption.

  716. These two phrases

  717. that are lifted

  718. first from Isaiah

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  719. chapter 53

  720. and the second

  721. from Psalm 16,

  722. the apostle Paul

  723. uses these phrases

  724. to describe

  725. this future

  726. prophetic word

  727. of how Christ

  728. would see

  729. resurrection.

  730. He would come

  731. to life

  732. and Jesus

  733. was alive

  734. and Jesus

  735. was the

  736. resurrection

  737. and the life

  738. as he had promised

  739. Mary and Martha

  740. just a few months

  741. earlier at the grave

  742. of Lazarus.

  743. And Jesus

  744. remains the living

  745. God.

  746. And as the living

  747. God,

  748. he is active,

  749. he is present,

  750. he is eternal,

  751. and thus he is

  752. powerful,

  753. the source of life

  754. and sustainer

  755. of life.

  756. Jesus will say

  757. in John 11,

  758. 25,

  759. I am the resurrection

  760. and the life.

  761. Whoever believes

  762. in me,

  763. though he die,

  764. yet shall he live.

  765. it's because of

  766. the dependable

  767. word of Christ,

  768. this confirmation

  769. of resurrection

  770. that Jesus

  771. raised from the dead

  772. and now extends

  773. to us this promise

  774. of eternal life

  775. for those who

  776. would believe.

  777. And we can trust

  778. this dependable word

  779. because of the

  780. confirmation

  781. of this resurrection

  782. of Christ himself.

  783. He becomes

  784. the first fruits

  785. of resurrection.

  786. And so the effects

  787. of the resurrection

  788. are to be experienced

  789. today in newness

  790. of life,

  791. this life not just

  792. for the future,

  793. but a life that we

  794. can enjoy today

  795. as we find in Romans

    Romans 6:1–4

  796. chapter 6,

  797. verses 1 to 4.

  798. What shall we say then?

  799. Are we to continue

  800. in sin that grace

  801. may abound?

  802. By no means.

  803. How can we

  804. who died to sin

  805. still live in it?

  806. Do you not know

  807. that all of us

  808. who have been baptized

  809. into Christ Jesus

  810. were baptized

  811. into his death?

  812. We were buried

  813. therefore with him

  814. by baptism into death

  815. in order that

  816. just as Christ

  817. was raised from the dead

  818. by the glory of the Father

  819. we too might walk

  820. in newness of life.

  821. The life that Jesus

  822. purchased for us

  823. was not just a life

  824. for eternity

  825. but a life we can

  826. begin to enjoy today.

  827. This newness of life

  828. through the power of God,

  829. the dependable word

  830. of God

  831. that we can enjoy

  832. for those

  833. who believe.

  834. We also see

  835. in verses 6 and 7

  836. the resurrection matters

  837. because it showed

  838. that God's power

  839. is unstoppable.

  840. God's power

  841. is unstoppable.

  842. The first phrase

  843. of verse 6 is

  844. he is not here

  845. but he has risen.

  846. And at the end

  847. of verse 7

  848. it says

  849. he was delivered

  850. into the hands

  851. of sinful men

  852. and crucified

  853. and on the third day

  854. he rose.

  855. The greatest enemy

  856. of humanity

  857. is not Satan.

  858. The greatest enemy

  859. of you and I

  860. of all of mankind

  861. is sin and death.

  862. Sin that we inherited

  863. from Adam

  864. that we gained from him

  865. because of his initial sin

  866. that was then transferred

  867. onto us

  868. and because

  869. we are inherently

  870. sinners

  871. we sin.

  872. Sin is the thing

  873. that separates us

  874. from God.

  875. Sin is what leads us

  876. inevitably

  877. to death

  878. not only in a physical way

  879. but also

  880. in a spiritual way

  881. as we find

  882. from Romans 6.23

  883. the wages

  884. of sin

  885. is death

  886. but

  887. the gift

  888. of God

  889. is eternal life

  890. through Jesus Christ

  891. our Lord.

  892. Why?

  893. Because

  894. of the resurrection.

  895. His resurrection life

  896. has purchased

  897. for us

  898. life

  899. with God

  900. through faith

  901. in his son.

  902. Jesus conquered.

  903. Jesus

  904. was ultimate.

  905. Jesus

  906. was powerful.

  907. And love

  908. his statement

  909. in John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  910. where Jesus

  911. says this

  912. he says

  913. for this reason

  914. the father loves me

  915. because I lay down

  916. my life

  917. that I might

  918. take it up again.

  919. No one takes it

  920. from me

  921. but I lay it down

  922. on my own accord.

  923. I have authority

  924. to lay it down

  925. and I have authority

  926. to take it up again.

  927. This charge

  928. I have received

  929. from my father.

  930. Jesus was not

  931. a victim

  932. of some

  933. tragedy.

  934. Jesus

  935. walked

  936. head long

  937. into

  938. crucifixion.

  939. He laid

  940. his life down

  941. so that he could

  942. raise it up again

  943. so he might

  944. offer us

  945. victory

  946. and deliverance

  947. and salvation

  948. over sin

  949. and death

  950. once for all

  951. only for those

  952. who believe.

  953. He is the savior

  954. of the world.

  955. He did destroy

  956. the ultimate enemy

  957. of sin

  958. and death.

  959. We find from

  960. Hebrews chapter 2

    Hebrews 2:14

  961. verses 14 and 15

  962. it says

  963. he himself

  964. likewise

  965. partook

  966. of the same things

  967. that through death

  968. he might destroy

  969. the one

  970. who has the power

  971. of death

  972. that is the devil

  973. and deliver

  974. all those

  975. who through

  976. fear of death

  977. were subject

  978. to lifelong

  979. slavery.

  980. Jesus died

  981. in our place

  982. so that we

  983. could enjoy

  984. resurrection life

  985. through him.

  986. He conquered

  987. and that conquering

  988. power

  989. is the same

  990. conquering power

  991. that we have

  992. access to

  993. through the work

  994. of his Holy Spirit

  995. we find in

  996. Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1:15

  997. verses 15 and 21.

  998. Paul will pray

  999. for the church

  1000. when he'll say

  1001. for this reason

  1002. because I've heard

  1003. of your faith

  1004. in the Lord Jesus

  1005. and your love

  1006. for all the saints

  1007. I do not cease

  1008. to give thanks

  1009. for you

  1010. remembering you

  1011. my prayers

  1012. that you might know

  1013. what is the

  1014. immeasurable

  1015. greatness

  1016. of his power

  1017. towards us

  1018. who believe

  1019. according to the

  1020. working of his

  1021. great might

  1022. that he worked

  1023. in Christ

  1024. when he raised

  1025. him from the dead

  1026. and seated him

  1027. at his right hand

  1028. in the heavenly places

  1029. far above all rule

  1030. and authority

  1031. and power

  1032. and dominion

  1033. and above every name

  1034. that is named

1035. not only in this age

1036. but also in the one

  1037. to come

  1038. Jesus Christ's power

  1039. is unstoppable

  1040. and because of his

  1041. resurrection power

  1042. by his grace

1043. and through his Holy Spirit

  1044. he gives us access

  1045. to enjoy

  1046. that same power

  1047. the power

  1048. to live a life

  1049. that is growing

  1050. in likeness to Christ

  1051. the power

  1052. to kind of live

  1053. a life

  1054. that begins

  1055. to demonstrate

  1056. a heart of love

  1057. and faith

  1058. towards him

  1059. and love

  1060. towards one another

  1061. it's a power

  1062. to overcome

  1063. the power

  1064. of sin

  1065. in our life

  1066. and to live

  1067. in a way

  1068. that is pleasing

  1069. to God

  1070. power to grow

  1071. and power

  1072. to suffer

  1073. the power

  1074. of God

  1075. through the power

  1076. of his Holy Spirit

  1077. living within

  1078. and finally

  1079. the resurrection

  1080. matters

  1081. because it proves

  1082. that the gospel

  1083. is credible

  1084. the gospel

  1085. is reliable

  1086. notice

  1087. beginning in verse 8

  1088. it says

  1089. and they remembered

  1090. his words

  1091. and returning

  1092. from the tomb

1093. they told all these things

  1094. to the eleven

  1095. and to the rest

  1096. they remembered

  1097. this word

  1098. in the Greek

  1099. is a passive

  1100. which means

  1101. they were recipients

  1102. of this remembering

  1103. it wasn't an active

  1104. remembering

  1105. it was a reciprocal

  1106. kind of remembering

  1107. it was a work

  1108. of God

  1109. on their life

  1110. to help them

  1111. finally remember

  1112. help them finally see

  1113. help them finally compute

  1114. all of the factors

1115. that were in front of them

  1116. now they're beginning

  1117. to make sense

  1118. these women

  1119. needed

  1120. an awakening

  1121. they needed sight

  1122. they needed the work

  1123. of the spirit

  1124. in their life

  1125. to open their eyes

  1126. to remember

  1127. and to see things

  1128. for how they were

  1129. up to this moment

1130. they couldn't put it together

  1131. all the evidence

  1132. was there

  1133. and Jesus

  1134. clearly states

  1135. that the work

  1136. of the spirit

  1137. was necessary

  1138. to do

  1139. this work

  1140. of remembrance

  1141. John 14 26

  1142. says

  1143. the helper

  1144. the holy spirit

  1145. whom the father

1146. will send in my name

  1147. he will teach you

  1148. all things

  1149. and bring

  1150. to your

  1151. remembrance

  1152. all that I have

  1153. said to you

  1154. that work

  1155. of the spirit

  1156. to help them

  1157. remember

  1158. and guess what

  1159. and they

  1160. remembered

  1161. they remembered

  1162. and this flood

  1163. of emotion

  1164. and faith

  1165. and hope

  1166. began to ignite

  1167. their hearts

  1168. and what does

  1169. it lead them to

  1170. it leads them

  1171. to testimony

  1172. it leads them

  1173. to witness

  1174. it leads them

  1175. to proclaim

  1176. this work

  1177. that they saw

  1178. here at the tomb

  1179. up to this point

  1180. the words

  1181. had been hidden

  1182. but now

  1183. this gospel

  1184. seems credible

  1185. this gospel

  1186. is verifiable

  1187. and even though

  1188. these words

  1189. as we find

  1190. seemed like

  1191. an idle tale

  1192. in other words

  1193. it was too good

  1194. to be true

  1195. God would take

  1196. the beginnings

  1197. that seed

  1198. of faith

  1199. that was planted

  1200. in their hearts

  1201. and the words

  1202. of Christ

  1203. and begin

  1204. to develop

  1205. that so that

  1206. by the time

  1207. we get to

  1208. Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1209. we see

  1210. the beginnings

  1211. of this church

  1212. so small

  1213. 120 believers

  1214. now begins

  1215. to propagate

  1216. this message

  1217. and this work

  1218. of God

  1219. in their lives

  1220. this testimony

  1221. of the gospel

  1222. that has become

  1223. very credible

  1224. verses 9

  1225. it says

  1226. and returning

  1227. from the tomb

  1228. they told

  1229. all these things

  1230. to the eleven

  1231. and to the rest

  1232. that was Mary Magdalene

  1233. and Joanna

  1234. and Mary the mother

  1235. of James

  1236. and the other women

  1237. with them

  1238. who told these things

  1239. to the apostles

  1240. but these words

  1241. seemed to them

  1242. an idle tale

  1243. and they did not

  1244. believe them

  1245. but Peter rose

1246. and ran to the tomb

  1247. stooping

  1248. and looking in

  1249. he saw the linen

  1250. claws by themselves

  1251. and he went home

  1252. marveling

  1253. at what had happened

  1254. of course

  1255. the fragile faith

  1256. this words

  1257. that were too good

  1258. to be true

  1259. would develop

  1260. into the strengthening

  1261. power of God

  1262. working in their life

  1263. to help them

  1264. be people of faith

  1265. it transformed

  1266. their life

  1267. it helped them

  1268. to be a unified

  1269. group of individuals

  1270. it helped them

  1271. to speak

  1272. with courage

  1273. it helped them

  1274. to love one another

  1275. it helped them

  1276. to suffer well

  1277. in very difficult times

  1278. especially

  1279. at the beginning

  1280. of the start

  1281. of the church

  1282. and as a result

  1283. we find

  1284. this church

  1285. that began

  1286. as just 120 believers

  1287. would bear fruit

  1288. and for 2,000 years

  1289. we have experienced

  1290. the blessing

  1291. of this credible

  1292. gospel witness

  1293. in the lives

  1294. of those

  1295. who have gone before

  1296. who have demonstrated

  1297. their faith in God

  1298. through good times

  1299. and hard times

  1300. and this will continue

  1301. to endure

  1302. until Christ comes

  1303. and it's because

  1304. of the credibility

  1305. and the power

  1306. of the resurrection

  1307. that Paul concludes

  1308. his chapter

  1309. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  1310. chapter 15

  1311. in this way

  1312. he says this

  1313. therefore

  1314. my beloved brothers

  1315. be steadfast

  1316. immovable

  1317. always abounding

  1318. in the work

  1319. of the Lord

  1320. knowing

  1321. that your labor

  1322. is not

  1323. in vain

  1324. your labor

  1325. in the Lord

  1326. is not

  1327. in vain

  1328. because

  1329. their preaching

  1330. was no longer

  1331. vain

  1332. because of a resurrection

  1333. that happened

  1334. that the hope

  1335. that they would experience

  1336. would continue

  1337. after death

  1338. that this life

  1339. wasn't all

  1340. they were going

  1341. to live

  1342. the apostle Paul

  1343. concludes this chapter

  1344. with a certainty

  1345. of the credibility

  1346. of the resurrection

1347. and what it would produce

  1348. in the lives

  1349. of true believers

1350. and those who would be

  1351. filled up

  1352. with a desire

  1353. to be steadfast

  1354. and immovable

  1355. in continuing

  1356. to proclaim

  1357. like these women did

  1358. this message

  1359. of the gospel

  1360. wherever they would go

  1361. I wonder this morning

  1362. have you placed

  1363. your faith

  1364. in Christ

  1365. not just

  1366. in his death

  1367. but especially

  1368. in understanding

  1369. the power

  1370. of his resurrection

  1371. and all that

  1372. is available

  1373. to us

  1374. because of

  1375. his resurrection

  1376. power

  1377. the power

  1378. of the resurrection

  1379. to lead us

  1380. to real life

  1381. not just

  1382. eternal life

  1383. but life today

  1384. have you come

  1385. to a place

  1386. of recognizing

  1387. your sin

  1388. your need

  1389. for God

  1390. have you

  1391. confessed your sin

  1392. have you

  1393. recognized

1394. that he is the Lord

  1395. as Paul says

  1396. in Romans

    Romans 10:9

  1397. chapter 10

  1398. verse 9

  1399. if you confess

  1400. your sin

  1401. he is faithful

  1402. and just

  1403. to forgive

  1404. your sin

  1405. and to

  1406. cleanse you

  1407. oh that's

  1408. 1 John 1 9

  1409. sorry

  1410. Romans 10

  1411. 9

  1412. if you confess

  1413. with your mouth

  1414. thank you

  1415. getting some help

  1416. here from the front

  1417. if you confess

  1418. with your mouth

  1419. that Jesus is Lord

  1420. and believe

  1421. in your heart

  1422. that God raised

  1423. him from the dead

  1424. you'll be saved

  1425. have you placed

  1426. your faith

  1427. in Christ

  1428. have you confessed

  1429. it with your mouth

  1430. do you believe

  1431. not only that

  1432. Jesus died

  1433. but that he rose

  1434. again

  1435. and for those

  1436. of us who have

  1437. placed our faith

  1438. in Christ

  1439. in that way

  1440. is there

  1441. an ongoing

  1442. testimony

  1443. of a life

  1444. that is steadfast

  1445. a life that is

  1446. resolute

  1447. a life that is

  1448. robust

  1449. and confident

  1450. because of

  1451. the dependability

  1452. of the word

  1453. of God

  1454. and because

  1455. of the hope

  1456. we have

  1457. after this life

  1458. to lead us

  1459. to Christ

  1460. is there

  1461. a ministry

  1462. a ministry

  1463. of confidence

  1464. in the fact

  1465. that God's work

  1466. the Lord's work

1467. will never be in vain

  1468. praise the Lord

  1469. for his resurrection

  1470. God thank you

  1471. for sending your son

  1472. Jesus

1473. thank you for his work

  1474. on the cross

  1475. thank you that

  1476. you have accomplished

  1477. this on

  1478. our behalf

1479. and I pray this morning

  1480. Lord

  1481. if there's anyone

1482. who does not know you

  1483. as their savior

  1484. that you would

  1485. convict their hearts

  1486. and lead them

  1487. to yourself

  1488. thank you that

  1489. your truth

  1490. is accessible

  1491. but Lord

  1492. I pray

  1493. that just as

  1494. these women

  1495. needed the Holy Spirit

  1496. to inform

  1497. their hearts

  1498. I pray

  1499. that you would

  1500. do the same

  1501. for us

  1502. inform our hearts

  1503. convict us of sin

  1504. lead us to yourself

  1505. in Jesus name

  1506. Amen

  1507. Amen
