  1. Hey, well, good morning.

  2. Open your Bibles, if you would please, to Luke, chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  3. It's my prayer for this service and for our time together

  4. You know, things would be so much easier to believe in Christ

  5. if I had seen Him for myself.

  6. It would have been so much easier if I had seen His miracles,

  7. if I had heard Him teach,

  8. if I had been there and saw Him raise the dead

  9. or heal the leper

  10. or heal those blind men by the side of the road.

  11. It just would have been so much easier.

  12. If I would have seen the empty tomb,

  13. then, man, the wrestling that I have with faith

  14. would have been so much easier.

  15. But this morning's passage is proof that that's not true.

  16. This morning's passage is proof

  17. and actually the passage from last week

  18. and the passage next week will be proof

  19. that you can have all the evidence all stacked up,

  20. the empty tomb, Jesus Christ appearing,

  21. walking with you on the road,

  22. having a conversation

  23. and yet you still cannot see

  24. with eyes of faith to believe

  25. and what Jesus will demonstrate

  26. through His interaction today

  27. with two disciples on the road to Emmaus

  28. that the Word of God is sufficient.

  29. The Word of God has power.

  30. It's the Word of God that changes hearts and transforms.

  31. And so if you're thinking about your own life

  32. and wondering,

  33. that issue in my life I just can't seem to get past,

  34. or that person in my life

  35. that I want to receive

  36. and enjoy the benefits of the gospel,

  37. or that co-worker

  38. that you have been trying to share the gospel with

  39. and your heart is

  40. that they would come to faith in Christ,

  41. the evidence of an empty tomb,

  42. the evidence of Jesus Christ

  43. actually walking along beside you

  44. isn't enough.

  45. What you and I have in the Word of God

  46. is sufficient to save.

  47. It is sufficient to save.

  48. That's the encouragement of this message this morning.

  49. The passage that we read,

  50. the encouragement is,

  51. the Word of God has power to save.

  52. It opens blind eyes.

  53. It changes and saves dead hearts.

  54. It rescues blind people

  55. and restores them back to sight.

  56. It gives them faith.

  57. And here we are.

  58. We're going to be looking at these two disciples of Jesus.

  59. They're walking back from Emmaus,

  60. or from Jerusalem to their home,

  61. and they are shattered

  62. by the events that just took place in Jerusalem.

  63. You see, the problem is that

  64. they had limited eyes of faith.

  65. They saw and knew the promises

  66. about this coming future Messiah,

  67. this Christ person.

  68. They knew the promises,

  69. but what they believed about Christ

  70. was conditioned by their own heart,

  71. and He's going to be a king.

  72. He's going to reunite Israel.

  73. He's going to put us in the land.

  74. Things are going to be happy and joyous

  75. and wonderful when the Messiah comes.

  76. He's going to liberate us from oppression.

  77. We're not going to have these problems anymore.

  78. That's the perspective they had

  79. of the Messiah, of the Christ.

  80. They could not.

  81. They did not have a category

  82. for a suffering Messiah.

  83. They did not have a compartment

  84. for a Christ that would die.

  85. And so, leaving Jerusalem,

  86. they're shattered.

  87. I imagine that we can resonate.

  88. We understand.

  89. And especially, I'm sorry guys,

  90. we're probably the biggest to blame for this.

  91. Okay?

  92. Like, we go to the refrigerator.

  93. We're looking for that thing.

  94. We know it was there,

  95. but we can't see it for some reason.

  96. And so we ask for help.

  97. Those of you who are wise,

  98. ask for help.

  99. The rest of us,

  100. we just try to hunt and search

  101. and 15 minutes goes by,

  102. we still don't find it.

  103. But those who are smart say,

  104. hey honey, please help me.

  105. She says, well it's right here.

  106. And she pulls it out.

  107. I was looking for the blue container.

  108. That's red now.

  109. How did that happen?

  110. You know how it goes, right?

  111. Well, I want to just put this little test

  112. for you as well.

  113. So you can kind of sympathize with me here.

  114. Now, here's a picture of a duck.

  115. Okay?

  116. Here's a picture of a duck.

  117. You know a duck.

  118. A duck head.

  119. He's a beak.

  120. He's looking up to the left.

  121. Okay?

  122. Now, here's another picture of a duck.

  123. Okay?

  124. You can see this picture of a duck.

  125. The question is,

  126. can you see the bunny?

  127. Can you see the bunny?

  128. So you've been conditioned,

  129. and those of you,

  130. you've seen this before,

  131. you're really smart.

  132. The smart people in the room,

  133. the rest of us,

  134. or me,

  135. I struggle.

  136. Okay?

  137. You might see the bunny.

  138. But here,

  139. this might help.

  140. Let's look at the bunny.

  141. Okay?

  142. There's a bunny.

  143. Now we can go back to the combined picture.

  144. And maybe it's a little easier to see.

  145. Or maybe you're still struggling.

  146. I still can't see that bunny.

  147. Or I can only see the bunny.

  148. I can't see that duck.

  149. This is the problem

  150. that the disciples were having.

  151. The disciples they were having,

  152. they were locked in to a picture.

  153. This picture they had in mind

  154. of the Christ,

  155. the Messiah.

  156. They knew what he was going to look like,

  157. but they could not see

  158. the suffering parts.

  159. The suffering of Christ

  160. was drowned out

  161. by the noise of celebration.

  162. In their hearts,

  163. they were ready to rejoice

  164. at the coming of Messiah.

  165. They could not comprehend

  166. the possibility

  167. of a suffering Christ.

  168. So we come to our passage this morning,

  169. and I would encourage you,

  170. if you're not there yet,

  171. Luke 24.

  172. If you're using the Pew Bible,

  173. it's on page 884.

  174. Please join us

  175. in looking at the Word of God

  176. together

  177. as we look through this together.

  178. Beginning in verse 13,

  179. we're going to see

  180. two blind disciples.

  181. Two blind disciples.

  182. Now they're not blind

  183. because they can't see

  184. visually or physically.

  185. They're blind in a spiritual way,

  186. and we're going to see that

  187. as we work our way

  188. through the text today.

  189. And they're blind

  190. for several reasons.

  191. We're going to pick up on that

  192. as we work through

  193. this passage as well.

  194. But notice their blindness

  195. as I read through

  196. from verses 13 to 20.

  197. It says,

  198. that very day,

  199. two of them were going

  200. to a village named Emmaus,

  201. about seven miles

  202. from Jerusalem,

  203. and they were talking

  204. with each other

  205. about all these things

  206. that had happened.

  207. While they were talking

  208. and discussing together,

  209. Jesus himself drew near

  210. and went with them.

  211. But their eyes were kept

  212. from recognizing him.

  213. And he said to them,

  214. what is the conversation

  215. that you are holding

  216. with each other

  217. as you walk?

  218. And they stood still,

  219. looking sad.

  220. Then one of them

  221. named Cleopas

  222. answered him,

  223. are you the only visitor

  224. to Jerusalem

  225. who does not know

  226. the things that have happened

  227. there in these days?

  228. And he said to them,

  229. what things?

  230. And they said to him,

  231. concerning Jesus of Nazareth,

  232. a man who was a prophet,

  233. mighty in deed,

  234. and word before God

  235. and all the people,

  236. and how our chief priests

  237. and rulers delivered him up

  238. to be condemned to death

  239. and to crucify him.

  240. Two blind disciples

  241. on their way home.

  242. They're blinded

  243. by several factors

  244. and just want to draw out

  245. a few of them this morning.

  246. First, they're blinded

  247. by their limited perspective.

  248. They're blinded

  249. by their limited perspective.

  250. We know that there are

  251. two disciples

  252. and disciples

  253. in kind of in a general term

  254. in that they're from

  255. a larger group

  256. of those who followed

  257. after Jesus.

  258. They're not one

  259. of the eleven apostles,

  260. but they're one

  261. of the disciples

  262. or followers of Jesus.

  263. And it says that very day,

  264. two of them,

  265. speaking about two

  266. out of a collective

  267. or a larger group,

  268. probably had been in Bethany,

  269. had definitely been there

  270. in Jerusalem

  271. during the Passover.

  272. And now,

  273. after the Passover

  274. is finished,

  275. and after the Sabbath

  276. is done,

  277. now they can finally

  278. make their way home.

  279. Emmaus,

  280. it says,

  281. was seven miles away.

  282. And while we don't know

  283. the specific location,

  284. and there's some controversy

  285. or some confusion

  286. about where the actual

  287. Emmaus was,

  288. it's likely a town

  289. that's about seven miles

  290. to the west of Jerusalem.

  291. They have likely

  292. left later in the morning.

  293. There's details

  294. about the story

  295. that they will share

  296. with Christ.

  297. It's clear that they've been

  298. in Jerusalem.

  299. It's clear that they've heard

  300. about the resurrection.

  301. It's clear that some women

  302. have come back

  303. and reported to them.

  304. It's clear that there have been

  305. some disciples

  306. that have gone to the tomb

  307. and reported back

  308. to the group.

  309. And somewhere late morning,

  310. perhaps,

  311. they are making their way

  312. back home.

  313. So they travel.

  314. And there's one thing

  315. on their mind.

  316. There's one thing

  317. that consumes their attention

  318. and their conversation.

  319. We find that in verse 14.

  320. They were talking

  321. with each other

  322. about all these things

  323. that happened.

  324. What things?

  325. Well, the things

  326. that happened

  327. during that week.

  328. The things that we've been

  329. discussing

  330. since the beginning

  331. of the year

  332. as we've been working

  333. our way through

  334. this final week

  335. of Jesus' life.

  336. Punctuated by that

  337. triumphal entry

  338. where Jesus comes

  339. into Jerusalem

  340. riding on a donkey.

  341. He's humble

  342. and riding on a donkey.

  343. But the palm branches

  344. that are waving,

  345. Hosanna to the Son of David.

  346. Blessed is he who comes

  347. in the name of the Lord.

  348. And then his cleansing

  349. of the temple

  350. on the next day.

  351. The time that he spends

  352. answering questions,

  353. very difficult questions

  354. from all the different

  355. religious leaders

  356. to establish

  357. his authority

  358. and knowledge

  359. of the Word of God.

  360. And of course,

  361. the Passover

  362. that he shared

  363. with his disciples.

  364. This Passover feast

  365. that was to commemorate

  366. that lamb

  367. that was to take

  368. the place

  369. of the firstborn son

  370. in the home

  371. and the blood

  372. that was painted

  373. on the doorpost.

  374. This symbol

  375. and picture

  376. of redemption.

  377. This price

  378. that had been paid.

  379. The blood that was

  380. painted on the doorposts

  381. so the angel

  382. would pass over.

  383. But there's a problem.

  384. The problem was

  385. that the death

  386. of Christ

  387. did not have

  388. a compartment

  389. or a category

  390. in their minds

  391. as they thought

  392. about Jesus

  393. or the Messiah.

  394. Death

  395. had no category

  396. in their minds

  397. or his suffering

  398. for that matter.

  399. And as they're discussing

  400. and the word here

  401. is even arguing

  402. with one another,

  403. perhaps they're arguing

  404. about the scriptures,

  405. a stranger appears

  406. in verse 15 and 16.

  407. While they were talking

  408. and discussing together,

  409. Jesus himself

  410. drew near

  411. and went with them

  412. and then this,

  413. but their eyes

  414. were kept

  415. from recognizing him.

  416. Jesus joins the group

  417. which would have been

  418. typical in that day

  419. where strangers come

  420. and they share the road

  421. and they converse

  422. with one another

  423. as they're walking

  424. along the way.

  425. But this problem

  426. that Jesus himself

  427. was there

  428. but they could not

  429. recognize him.

  430. Why?

  431. Because their eyes

  432. were kept

  433. from recognizing him.

  434. Their eyes were kept

  435. from recognizing him.

  436. This is a passive.

  437. It means that they're

  438. a recipient

  439. of action.

  440. This word

  441. for kept

  442. is to hold,

  443. onto,

  444. to grab,

  445. to seize,

  446. to control,

  447. to arrest.

  448. That their eyes

  449. were shut.

  450. They were closed.

  451. They were unable

  452. to see Jesus

  453. standing right

  454. in front of them.

  455. They could not

  456. recognize

  457. who he was.

  458. They're blinded

  459. from seeing

  460. the Lord

  461. for who he is.

  462. Of course,

  463. this was the last person

  464. they expected to see.

  465. That's part of the problem.

  466. But for now,

  467. their eyes are kept

  468. from seeing

  469. because there's

  470. an important lesson

  471. for us to learn

  472. in this story.

  473. A lesson

  474. that only Luke

  475. will share with us

  476. about these two

  477. that are moving

  478. from Jerusalem

  479. to Emmaus.

  480. They're stunned.

  481. Notice,

  482. Jesus asked them

  483. a question

  484. in verse 17.

  485. What is this conversation

  486. that you're having

  487. with each other

  488. as you walk?

  489. And they stood still

  490. looking sad.

  491. Here they are

  492. walking along

  493. the road

  494. and the question

  495. is asked

  496. and you can almost see

  497. they're stopping

  498. in their tracks,

  499. perhaps turning around,

  500. making eye contact

  501. with Christ,

  502. perhaps putting

  503. their arms

  504. on their hips

  505. and just,

  506. what in the world

  507. is your problem?

  508. Because of their

  509. limited perspective.

  510. They had eyes

  511. that could only see

  512. what they were

  513. conditioned to see.

  514. Their limited perspective

  515. kept them

  516. from being able

  517. to see Christ.

  518. But there's something else.

  519. We find that

  520. in verses 18 to 21.

  521. We find in verses

  522. 18 to 21

  523. their narrow view

  524. of redemption.

  525. Let me read this.

  526. Then one of them

  527. named Cleobas

  528. answered,

  529. Are you the only

  530. visitor to Jerusalem

  531. who does not know

  532. the things that have

  533. happened here

  534. in these days?

  535. Their narrow view

  536. of redemption.

  537. I want to just define

  538. this word redemption

  539. for you so you know

  540. what we're talking about.

  541. Redemption is this

  542. action of regaining

  543. possession of something

  544. in exchange for payment

  545. or clearing a debt.

  546. Basically,

  547. when you go to the store

  548. and you purchase something,

  549. you're redeeming it.

  550. You're exchanging

  551. a value of money

  552. for that item.

  553. This is what Jesus

  554. has done for us

  555. by dying for us

  556. on the cross.

  557. There was a redemption

  558. price that was paid.

  559. He paid the price

  560. that we deserve to pay

  561. for the wages

  562. or the penalty

  563. or the payment

  564. for sin

  565. is death

  566. but the gift of God

  567. is eternal life

  568. through Jesus Christ

  569. our Lord.

  570. Jesus paid

  571. that redemption price

  572. so that we could

  573. enjoy the benefits

  574. of salvation

  575. to those who believe.

  576. But their idea

  577. or concept of redemption

  578. was that Jesus

  579. was going to

  580. deliver them

  581. from Roman occupation.

  582. Jesus was going to come

  583. and he was going to

  584. make everything better

  585. for them.

  586. He was going to

  587. take away the taxes.

  588. He was going to

  589. restore the people

  590. back to Israel.

  591. He was going to unite

  592. both the northern

  593. and southern tribes.

  594. He was going to

  595. make everything better.

  596. That was their concept

  597. of redemption.

  598. But they should have

  599. known better.

  600. They should have known better

  601. because what we're going

  602. to see here

  603. in these next several verses

  604. is how they answer

  605. this question

  606. the question that Jesus

  607. asked about

  608. what are you discussing

  609. will demonstrate

  610. they have all the right

  611. knowledge

  612. but not the right faith.

  613. You can have all

  614. the right facts.

  615. You can believe

  616. all the right truths

  617. and still not have

  618. a saving relationship

  619. with Jesus.

  620. Look at this.

  621. They believe

  622. the right things

  623. about him.

  624. They know where he's from.

  625. They affirm his mission.

  626. They believe

  627. that his works

  628. were from God

  629. and they are aware

  630. of his death.

  631. Now just take note

  632. of that as I read

  633. beginning in verse 19.

  634. And he said to them

  635. Jesus

  636. what things?

  637. What are you talking about?

  638. What things happened

  639. there in Jerusalem?

  640. I'd like to know.

  641. Well okay.

  642. Here we go.

  643. And so

  644. Cleopas answers

  645. concerning Jesus

  646. of Nazareth

  647. a man

  648. who was a prophet

  649. mighty indeed

  650. in word before God

  651. and all the people

  652. and how our chief priests

  653. and rulers

  654. delivered him up

  655. to be condemned

  656. to death

  657. and crucify him

  658. but we had hoped

  659. that he was the one

  660. to redeem

  661. Israel.

  662. Yes besides all this

  663. it's now the third day

  664. since these things

  665. have happened.

  666. See they believed

  667. all the right facts

  668. about Jesus.

  669. They knew that he was

  670. from Nazareth

  671. which was important.

  672. Isaiah chapter 9

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  673. talks about coming

  674. from the land

  675. of the Galilee

  676. of the Gentiles.

  677. They believed

  678. that he was a mighty

  679. prophet from God.

  680. A Moses like prophet

  681. as a matter of fact

  682. from Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 18 chapter mention

  683. chapter 18 and 19

  684. where Moses promises

  685. this future

  686. better than Moses

  687. prophet.

  688. They believed

  689. that he was approved

  690. by God

  691. because he did

  692. his works

  693. his mighty works

  694. before God

  695. which meant

  696. that God approved

  697. of the things

  698. that Jesus had done

  699. and they believe

  700. in the unmistakable

  701. reality of his death

  702. but there's one thing

  703. missing.

  704. They do not believe

  705. in the resurrection.

  706. They haven't seen it

  707. and they don't understand

  708. what Jesus came to do

  709. in terms of redemption

  710. and they don't really

  711. understand

  712. what his death

  713. accomplished either

  714. and all of that

  715. should have been clear

  716. and what's fascinating

  717. is they say

  718. and it is now

  719. the third day

  720. since these things

  721. happened.

  722. Well that should have

  723. sent bells off

  724. in their mind

  725. third day

  726. well Jesus talked

  727. about the third day

  728. I know what's supposed

  729. to happen on the third day

  730. he's going to be risen

  731. but none of that

  732. took place.

  733. A dead Messiah

  734. had no place

  735. in their minds

  736. and especially

  737. in this week

  738. this week of Passover

  739. where they understood

  740. that redemption

  741. could only come one way

  742. redemption could only

  743. come through

  744. a redemption price

  745. that lamb

  746. that was killed

  747. the blood

  748. that was spilt

  749. so that the firstborn

  750. son in their home

  751. could be free.

  752. It was all a picture

  753. of what Christ

  754. was going to do

  755. and what Christ

  756. did do on the cross

  757. in giving his son

  758. the death

  759. that was required

  760. this purchase price

  761. this redemption

  762. that God had given

  763. to us

  764. or offered to us

  765. through his son

  766. Jesus.

  767. They couldn't see it

  768. because they

  769. didn't understand

  770. redemption

  771. they had this narrow view

  772. and then we see

  773. in verses 22 to 24

  774. their unwillingness

  775. to believe

  776. their unwillingness

  777. to believe

  778. it says

  779. moreover

  780. some women

  781. of our company

  782. amazed us

  783. they were at the tomb

  784. early in the morning

  785. and when they did not

  786. find his body

  787. they came back

  788. saying

  789. that they had even

  790. seen a vision

  791. of angels

  792. who said that

  793. he was alive

  794. some of those

  795. who were with us

  796. went to the tomb

  797. and found it

  798. just as the women

  799. had said

  800. but him

  801. they did not

  802. see

  803. notice they heard

  804. the testimony

  805. of the women

  806. all the facts

  807. were there

  808. all the evidence

  809. was available

  810. and they're still

  811. struggling to believe

  812. this unwillingness

  813. of their heart

  814. to accept

  815. the clear testimony

  816. of the evidence

  817. that they had

  818. this testimony

  819. of the women

  820. this testimony

  821. of those

  822. who went to the tomb

  823. Peter

  824. and John

  825. the testimony

  826. of the heavenly

  827. messengers

  828. that came

  829. and spoke

  830. and reminded

  831. these ladies

  832. of the word

  833. of Christ

  834. and in fact

  835. there were some women

  836. who did see

  837. Jesus

  838. so that his

  839. statement here

  840. at the end

  841. of verse 24

  842. they did not

  843. see

  844. well that wasn't

  845. true

  846. in Matthew 28

    Matthew 28:8

  847. verses 8 and 9

  848. we see

  849. so they departed

  850. quickly

  851. from the tomb

  852. speaking of the women

  853. with fear

  854. and great joy

  855. they ran

  856. to tell his

  857. disciples

  858. and behold

  859. Jesus

  860. met them

  861. and said

  862. greetings

  863. and they came

  864. up and took

  865. hold of his

  866. feet

  867. and worshipped

  868. him

  869. some women

  870. had seen

  871. Jesus

  872. the testimony

  873. was clear

  874. the tomb

  875. was empty

  876. the message

  877. was confirmed

  878. and interestingly

  879. they even

  880. repeat the

  881. angels words

  882. back to

  883. Jesus

  884. verse 20

  885. how our chief

  886. priests and rulers

  887. delivered him

  888. up to be

  889. condemned to

  890. death

  891. and crucify him

  892. that word

  893. delivered is the

  894. same word

  895. that's used

  896. by the angels

  897. and the same

  898. word that's used

  899. by Jesus

  900. Christ

  901. on the occasions

  902. that he shared

  903. about this

  904. event

  905. and somehow

  906. with all

  907. of the evidence

  908. stacked up

  909. in front of

  910. them

  911. they still

  912. are unable

  913. to believe

  914. the word of

  915. Christ had gone

  916. before them

  917. the testimony

  918. of his life

  919. his authoritative

  920. teaching

  921. the events

  922. that unfolded

  923. in Jerusalem

  924. just as Jesus

  925. had said

  926. the empty tomb

  927. the confirmation

  928. of angels

  929. Peter and John

  930. and the women

  931. who had seen

  932. the tomb

  933. for themselves

  934. verification

  935. galore

  936. and one

  937. commentator

  938. puts it this

  939. way

  940. and I appreciate

  941. this

  942. he says

  943. the inability

  944. of these two

  945. to believe

  946. is a moral

  947. failure

  948. not an

  949. intellectual

  950. one

  951. it's a moral

  952. failure

  953. not an

  954. intellectual

  955. one

  956. all the

  957. facts were

  958. lined up

  959. they were

  960. recounting

  961. those facts

  962. those truths

  963. but in their

  964. hearts

  965. they could

  966. not

  967. believe

  968. they refused

  969. they rejected

  970. the truth

  971. that was right

  972. in front of

  973. them

  974. the irony

  975. of the

  976. situation

  977. is really

  978. quite staggering

  979. here they

  980. accuse Jesus

  981. of blindness

  982. are you the

  983. only one

  984. from Jerusalem

  985. that doesn't

  986. know what's

  987. happened

  988. are you

  989. blind

  990. and here

  991. they are

  992. the blind

  993. ones

  994. themselves

  995. walking

  996. next to

  997. the Messiah

  998. they could

  999. not see

  1000. it's a strange

  1001. series of

  1002. events

  1003. wouldn't you

  1004. say

  1005. why would

  1006. God

  1007. put this

  1008. in the

  1009. gospel

  1010. record

  1011. for us

  1012. I believe

  1013. it's here

  1014. for several

  1015. reasons

  1016. but one

  1017. main reason

  1018. is to help

  1019. those of us

  1020. who now

  1021. 2000 years

  1022. after the

  1023. resurrection

  1024. of Christ

  1025. will understand

  1026. that all

  1027. the evidence

  1028. all of the

  1029. truths

  1030. that are

  1031. stacked up

  1032. all the

  1033. facts that

  1034. are in

  1035. place

  1036. do not

  1037. matter

  1038. apart

  1039. from the

  1040. word

  1041. of God

  1042. to do

  1043. its work

  1044. and by

  1045. the way

  1046. all of us

  1047. in this

  1048. room

  1049. have the

  1050. word of

  1051. God

  1052. all of us

  1053. in this

  1054. room have

  1055. access

  1056. to the

  1057. power

  1058. of the

  1059. word

  1060. to save

  1061. even

  1062. Jesus

  1063. and we're

  1064. going to

  1065. see that

  1066. in the

  1067. next

  1068. several

  1069. verses

  1070. even

  1071. Jesus

  1072. himself

  1073. instead

  1074. of saying

  1075. hey

  1076. I'm the

  1077. guy

  1078. here I

  1079. am

  1080. look at

  1081. me

  1082. recognize

  1083. me

  1084. Jesus

  1085. doesn't

  1086. even

  1087. do

  1088. that

  1089. Jesus

  1090. will

  1091. point

  1092. them

  1093. to

  1094. the

  1095. word

  1096. of

  1097. God

  1098. that

  1099. alone

  1100. has

  1101. the

  1102. power

  1103. to

  1104. save

  1105. let's

  1106. look at

  1107. that

  1108. together

  1109. the

  1110. power

  1111. of

  1112. the

  1113. word

  1114. to

  1115. open

  1116. blind

  1117. eyes

  1118. that's

  1119. what

  1120. we

  1121. see

  1122. from

  1123. verse

  1124. 25

  1125. to

  1126. the

  1127. end

  1128. of

  1129. the

  1130. chapter

  1131. the

  1132. power

  1133. of

  1134. the

  1135. word

  1136. to

  1137. open

  1138. blind

  1139. eyes

  1140. it

  1141. begins

  1142. in

  1143. verse

  1144. 25

  1145. and

  1146. he

  1147. said

  1148. to

  1149. them

  1150. this

  1151. is

  1152. Jesus

  1153. speaking

  1154. oh

  1155. foolish

  1156. ones

  1157. and

  1158. slow

  1159. of

  1160. heart

  1161. to

  1162. was it

  1163. not

  1164. necessary

  1165. that

  1166. the

  1167. Christ

  1168. should

  1169. suffer

  1170. these

  1171. things

  1172. and

  1173. enter

  1174. into

  1175. his

  1176. glory

  1177. there's

  1178. several

  1179. things

  1180. that the

  1181. word

  1182. of

  1183. God

  1184. does

  1185. for

  1186. us

  1187. in

  1188. order

  1189. to

  1190. get

  1191. us

  1192. and

  1193. lead

  1194. us

  1195. to

  1196. faith

  1197. and

  1198. the

  1199. first

  1200. thing

  1201. that

  1202. happens

  1203. is

  1204. the

  1205. word

  1206. of

  1207. God

  1208. confronts

  1209. us

  1210. the

  1211. word

  1212. of

  1213. God

  1214. confronts

  1215. and

  1216. Jesus

  1217. speaking

  1218. the word

  1219. of

  1220. God

  1221. helps

  1222. these

  1223. disciples

  1224. these

  1225. followers

  1226. of

  1227. him

  1228. to

  1229. recognize

  1230. the

  1231. hardness

  1232. of

  1233. their

  1234. heart

  1235. the

  1236. slowness

  1237. of

  1238. their

  1239. heart

  1240. to

  1241. believe

  1242. I

  1243. don't

  1244. know

  1245. about

  1246. you

  1247. there

  1248. have

  1249. been

  1250. some

  1251. times

  1252. where

  1253. I've

  1254. been

  1255. confused

  1256. I've

  1257. been

  1258. looking

  1259. at

  1260. certain

  1261. facts

  1262. but I

  1263. still

  1264. can't

  1265. figure

  1266. it

  1267. out

  1268. and

  1269. so

  1270. I

  1271. ask

  1272. a

  1273. question

  1274. to

  1275. a

  1276. friend

  1277. and

  1278. if

  1279. that

  1280. friend

  1281. would

  1282. say

  1283. you

  1284. big

  1285. dummy

  1286. you

  1287. such

  1288. a

  1289. fool

  1290. that

  1291. probably

  1292. wouldn't

  1293. resonate

  1294. very

  1295. well

  1296. with

  1297. us

  1298. would

  1299. it

  1300. and

  1301. yet

  1302. Jesus

  1303. graciously

  1304. and

  1305. directly

  1306. challenges

  1307. and

  1308. confronts

  1309. the

  1310. true

  1311. nature

  1312. of

  1313. their

  1314. heart

  1315. it

  1316. was

  1317. a

  1318. foolish

  1319. heart

  1320. it

  1321. was

  1322. an

  1323. unbelieving

  1324. heart

  1325. they

  1326. needed

  1327. to be

  1328. shocked

  1329. into

  1330. awareness

  1331. they

  1332. needed

  1333. to come

  1334. to a

  1335. place

  1336. of

  1337. recognizing

  1338. the

  1339. true

  1340. condition

  1341. of

  1342. their

  1343. life

  1344. they

  1345. needed

  1346. to

  1347. see

  1348. it

  1349. how

  1350. it

  1351. really

  1352. was

  1353. they

  1354. were

  1355. fools

  1356. in

  1357. and

  1358. of

  1359. themselves

  1360. they

  1361. needed

  1362. wisdom

  1363. from

  1364. God

  1365. they

  1366. needed

  1367. help

  1368. from

  1369. God

  1370. and

  1371. Jesus

  1372. in

  1373. helping

  1374. to

  1375. confront

  1376. the

  1377. true

  1378. nature

  1379. of

  1380. their

  1381. heart

  1382. now

  1383. begins

  1384. to

  1385. work

  1386. in

  1387. that

  1388. process

  1389. to

  1390. lead

  1391. them

  1392. to

  1393. truth

  1394. Jesus

  1395. begins

  1396. with

  1397. confrontation

  1398. it's

  1399. the same

  1400. track

  1401. that he

  1402. uses

  1403. by the

  1404. way

  1405. consistently

  1406. throughout

  1407. his

  1408. ministry

  1409. to

  1410. Nicodemus

  1411. you

  1412. remember

  1413. Nicodemus

  1414. who

  1415. comes

  1416. to

  1417. Jesus

  1418. by

  1419. night

  1420. Nicodemus

  1421. is

  1422. in

  1423. the

  1424. upper

  1425. echelon

  1426. of

  1427. the

  1428. thinkers

  1429. and

  1430. scholars

  1431. there

  1432. in

  1433. Israel

  1434. and

  1435. Nicodemus

  1436. comes

  1437. and asks

  1438. Jesus

  1439. a question

  1440. by night

  1441. and

  1442. Jesus

  1443. carries

  1444. him

  1445. through

  1446. and

  1447. talks

  1448. about

  1449. how

  1450. does

  1451. a

  1452. man

  1453. get

  1454. to

  1455. see

  1456. God

  1457. well

  1458. he

  1459. must

  1460. be

  1461. born

  1462. again

  1463. and

  1464. Nicodemus

  1465. is

  1466. like

  1467. what

  1468. be

  1469. born

  1470. again

  1471. must

  1472. I

  1473. enter

  1474. into

  1475. my

  1476. mother's

  1477. womb

  1478. and

  1479. be

  1480. born

  1481. again

  1482. how

  1483. does

  1484. that

  1485. happen

  1486. and

  1487. Jesus

  1488. is

  1489. like

  1490. in

  1491. John

  1492. how

  1493. can

  1494. these

  1495. things

  1496. be

  1497. and

  1498. Jesus

  1499. is

  1500. answer

  1501. are

  1502. you

  1503. a

  1504. teacher

  1505. of

  1506. Israel

  1507. and

  1508. yet

  1509. you

  1510. do

  1511. not

  1512. understand

  1513. these

  1514. things

  1515. how

  1516. is

  1517. your

  1518. heart

  1519. so

  1520. hard

  1521. how

  1522. are

  1523. you

  1524. such

  1525. a

  1526. fool

  1527. Nicodemus

  1528. recognize

  1529. the truth

  1530. of the

  1531. word

  1532. recognize

  1533. your

  1534. true

  1535. nature

  1536. the

  1537. number

  1538. of

  1539. times

  1540. that

  1541. Jesus

  1542. confronts

  1543. his

  1544. disciples

  1545. about

  1546. their

  1547. foolish

  1548. hearts

  1549. oh

  1550. you

  1551. of

  1552. little

  1553. faith

  1554. and

  1555. God

  1556. will

  1557. do

  1558. the

  1559. same

  1560. for

  1561. us

  1562. he

  1563. wants

  1564. us

  1565. to

  1566. recognize

  1567. that

  1568. in

  1569. and

  1570. of

  1571. ourselves

  1572. we

  1573. are

  1574. fools

  1575. in

  1576. and

  1577. of

  1578. ourselves

  1579. our

  1580. hearts

  1581. are

  1582. hard

  1583. and

  1584. calloused

  1585. our

  1586. eyes

  1587. are

  1588. blind

  1589. we

  1590. cannot

  1591. see

  1592. and

  1593. until

  1594. you

  1595. come

  1596. to

  1597. the

  1598. place

  1599. of

  1600. recognizing

  1601. that

  1602. you

  1603. need

  1604. God

  1605. you

  1606. will

  1607. not

  1608. get

  1609. God

  1610. you

  1611. can

  1612. do

  1613. it

  1614. on

  1615. your

  1616. own

  1617. well

  1618. you're

  1619. not

  1620. going

  1621. to

  1622. have

  1623. him

  1624. and

  1625. these

  1626. disciples

  1627. needed

  1628. to

  1629. come

  1630. to

  1631. a

  1632. place

  1633. of

  1634. recognizing

  1635. that

  1636. of

  1637. themselves

  1638. they

  1639. could

  1640. not

  1641. add

  1642. up

  1643. the

  1644. facts

  1645. enough

  1646. to

  1647. come

  1648. to

  1649. a

  1650. place

  1651. of

  1652. faith

  1653. they

  1654. needed

  1655. something

  1656. more

  1657. so

  1658. what

  1659. will

  1660. Jesus

  1661. do

  1662. well

  1663. the

  1664. grace

  1665. of

  1666. God

  1667. through

  1668. Christ

  1669. brings

  1670. the

  1671. word

  1672. to

  1673. them

  1674. and

  1675. we

  1676. find

  1677. that

  1678. the

  1679. word

  1680. now

  1681. brings

  1682. light

  1683. in

  1684. verse

  1685. 27

  1686. the

  1687. word

  1688. of

  1689. God

  1690. brings

  1691. light

  1692. he

  1693. says

  1694. and

  1695. beginning

  1696. with

  1697. Moses

  1698. and all

  1699. the

  1700. prophets

  1701. he

  1702. interpreted

  1703. to

  1704. them

  1705. in

  1706. all

  1707. the

  1708. scriptures

  1709. the

  1710. things

  1711. concerning

  1712. himself

  1713. what

  1714. I

  1715. find

  1716. so

  1717. fascinating

  1718. here

  1719. is

  1720. that

  1721. Jesus

  1722. doesn't

  1723. say

  1724. come

  1725. on

  1726. guys

  1727. I'm

  1728. the

  1729. one

  1730. it's

  1731. me

  1732. look

  1733. here

  1734. I

  1735. am

  1736. recognize

  1737. me

  1738. Jesus

  1739. doesn't

  1740. do

  1741. that

  1742. Jesus

  1743. uses

  1744. the

  1745. word

  1746. of

  1747. God

  1748. and

  1749. there's

  1750. a

  1751. reason

  1752. for

  1753. that

  1754. the

  1755. reason

  1756. is

  1757. because

  1758. it's

  1759. the

  1760. word

  1761. of

  1762. God

  1763. that

  1764. has

  1765. power

  1766. the

  1767. reason

  1768. for

  1769. that

  1770. is

  1771. these

  1772. disciples

  1773. understood

  1774. the

  1775. integrity

  1776. of the

  1777. scripture

  1778. that had

  1779. already

  1780. been

  1781. confirmed

  1782. that

  1783. it

  1784. was

  1785. a

  1786. word

  1787. of

  1788. God

  1789. and

  1790. so

  1791. if

  1792. Jesus

  1793. is

  1794. drawing

  1795. from

  1796. the

  1797. word

  1798. of

  1799. God

  1800. that

  1801. they

  1802. understand

  1803. it

  1804. has

  1805. a

  1806. testimony

  1807. that's

  1808. authoritative

  1809. it's

  1810. sufficient

  1811. if

  1812. he's

  1813. drawing

  1814. from

  1815. that

  1816. word

  1817. and

  1818. applying

  1819. it

  1820. to

  1821. himself

  1822. then

  1823. God

  1824. through

  1825. the

  1826. Holy

  1827. Spirit

  1828. will

  1829. connect

  1830. the

  1831. dots

  1832. and

  1833. help

  1834. them

  1835. to

  1836. finally

  1837. believe

  1838. that

  1839. faith

  1840. will

  1841. finally

  1842. come

  1843. true

  1844. his

  1845. word

  1846. oh

  1847. what

  1848. a

  1849. message

  1850. that

  1851. must

  1852. have

  1853. been

  1854. a

  1855. message

  1856. that

  1857. included

  1858. all

  1859. the

  1860. promises

  1861. that

  1862. were

  1863. then

  1864. fulfilled

  1865. in

  1866. Christ

  1867. but

  1868. a

  1869. message

  1870. that

  1871. also

  1872. included

  1873. the

  1874. elements

  1875. of

  1876. his

  1877. suffering

  1878. that

  1879. he

  1880. would

  1881. be

  1882. the

  1883. suffering

  1884. Savior

  1885. the

  1886. suffering

  1887. Christ

  1888. you know

  1889. they weren't

  1890. convinced

  1891. by the

  1892. angels

  1893. they

  1894. weren't

  1895. convinced

  1896. by

  1897. all

  1898. the

  1899. people

  1900. they

  1901. weren't

  1902. even

  1903. convinced

  1904. by

  1905. Jesus

  1906. walking

  1907. with

  1908. them

  1909. on

  1910. the

  1911. way

  1912. but

  1913. they

  1914. were

  1915. Jesus

  1916. uses

  1917. the

  1918. word

  1919. of

  1920. Christ

  1921. the

  1922. word

  1923. of

  1924. God

  1925. he's

  1926. leading

  1927. them

  1928. to

  1929. see

  1930. it

  1931. for

  1932. themselves

  1933. by

  1934. the

  1935. way

  1936. this

  1937. is

  1938. a

  1939. strategy

  1940. that

  1941. Jesus

  1942. uses

  1943. consistently

  1944. and

  1945. you

  1946. remember

  1947. and

  1948. we'll

  1949. just

  1950. go

  1951. through

  1952. this

  1953. quickly

  1954. John

  1955. the

  1956. Baptist

  1957. sends

  1958. his

  1959. disciples

  1960. he's

  1961. in

  1962. jail

  1963. remember

  1964. he's

  1965. like

  1966. are

  1967. you

  1968. the

  1969. one

  1970. or

  1971. are

  1972. waiting

  1973. for

  1974. somebody

  1975. else

  1976. and

  1977. what

  1978. does

  1979. Jesus

  1980. do

  1981. Jesus

  1982. doesn't

  1983. say

  1984. I'm

  1985. the

  1986. guy

  1987. let me

  1988. liberate

  1989. some

  1990. oppressed

  1991. individuals

  1992. let me

  1993. raise

  1994. the

  1995. dead

  1996. and

  1997. and

  1998. then

  1999. he

  2000. quotes

  2001. scripture

  2002. to

  2003. them

  2004. we

  2005. find

  2006. that

  2007. in

  2008. chapter

  2009. 7

  2010. verses

  2011. 21

  2012. to

  2013. 23

  2014. it

  2015. is

  2016. the

  2017. one

  2018. who

  2019. is

  2020. not

  2021. offended

  2022. by

  2023. me

  2024. he

  2025. speaks

  2026. the

  2027. word

  2028. of

  2029. God

  2030. which

  2031. by

  2032. the

  2033. way

  2034. pointed

  2035. to

  2036. the

  2037. character

  2038. and

  2039. the

  2040. service

  2041. the

  2042. ministry

  2043. of

  2044. this

  2045. future

  2046. Messiah

  2047. which

  2048. by

  2049. the

  2050. way

  2051. Jesus

  2052. had

  2053. just

  2054. done

  2055. Christ's

  2056. confidence

  2057. was in

  2058. the word

  2059. of God

  2060. in the

  2061. spirit

  2062. of God

  2063. to lead

  2064. a person

  2065. to

  2066. faith

  2067. and

  2068. if

  2069. Christ's

  2070. dependence

  2071. is

  2072. in

  2073. the

  2074. word

  2075. how

  2076. much

  2077. more

  2078. should

  2079. our

  2080. dependence

  2081. be

  2082. on

  2083. the

  2084. word

  2085. of

  2086. God

  2087. saves

  2088. through

  2089. giving

  2090. light

  2091. from

  2092. his

  2093. word

  2094. in

  2095. verses

  2096. 28

  2097. to

  2098. 32

  2099. we

  2100. see

  2101. the

  2102. word

  2103. the

  2104. word

  2105. gives

  2106. sight

  2107. not

  2108. just

  2109. provides

  2110. light

  2111. but

  2112. now

  2113. gives

  2114. sight

  2115. notice

  2116. this

  2117. so

  2118. they

  2119. drew

  2120. near

  2121. to

  2122. the

  2123. village

  2124. to

  2125. which

  2126. they

  2127. were

  2128. going

  2129. he

  2130. acted

  2131. as

  2132. if

  2133. he

  2134. was

  2135. going

  2136. further

  2137. but

  2138. they

  2139. urged

  2140. him

  2141. strongly

  2142. saying

  2143. stay

  2144. with

  2145. us

  2146. for

  2147. it

  2148. is

  2149. toward

  2150. the

  2151. evening

  2152. and

  2153. the

  2154. day

  2155. them

  2156. now

  2157. when

  2158. he

  2159. was

  2160. at

  2161. the

  2162. table

  2163. with

  2164. them

  2165. he

  2166. took

  2167. the

  2168. bread

  2169. and

  2170. blessed

  2171. and

  2172. broke

  2173. it

  2174. and

  2175. gave

  2176. it

  2177. to

  2178. them

  2179. and

  2180. their

  2181. eyes

  2182. were

  2183. opened

  2184. and

  2185. they

  2186. recognized

  2187. him

  2188. and

  2189. he

  2190. vanished

  2191. from

  2192. their

  2193. sight

  2194. they

  2195. said

  2196. to

  2197. each

  2198. other

  2199. did

  2200. not

  2201. our

  2202. hearts

  2203. burn

  2204. within

  2205. us

  2206. while

  2207. he

  2208. talked

  2209. to

  2210. us

  2211. on

  2212. the

  2213. road

  2214. while

  2215. he

  2216. opened

  2217. to

  2218. us

  2219. the

  2220. scripture

  2221. and

  2222. we

  2223. see

  2224. here

  2225. that

  2226. the

2424. The love for Jesus and love for disciples now turns them around.

2425. They were walking away from Jerusalem,

2426. and now they're walking towards Jerusalem.

2427. They walked away in disbelief,

2428. and now they're walking towards with full faith and commitment.

2429. They're walking away in discussing and arguing,

2430. and now they're walking towards with this word of God.

  2431. He's been risen.

  2432. He's revealed himself.

  2433. It's true.

  2434. He is the Messiah.

  2435. Everything changed,

2436. and they're compelled to go back and share it with the disciples.

2437. The word of God has so burned within their hearts,

2438. they want to share it with the rest of the disciples.

2439. And so the word of God has power today.

2440. And I'll just close with this verse,

  2441. found in 2 Peter 1, verses 3 to 8.

    2 Peter 1:3–8

2442. For those of you who have come to faith in Christ,

2443. who have come to a place of recognizing that you are a sinner,

2444. have come to a place of recognizing that you cannot get to God on your own,

2445. that God has opened up your eyes,

2446. he's given you the gift of faith,

2447. you believed in Jesus as the only way to salvation,

2448. the word of God has this promise for us.

  2449. It says,

2450. His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness.

  2451. Okay,

2452. so God has granted through his divine power just a little bit of things that we need for life and godliness.

  2453. No?

  2454. Oh,

2455. He's provided most of the things that we need for life and godliness.

  2456. No.

2457. He has provided all things,

2458. everything that you and I need for life and godliness.

  2459. How?

  2460. Well,

2461. through the knowledge of him who called us to his glory and excellence.

  2462. That knowledge of him,

  2463. by the way,

2464. comes through the power of the word of God.

2465. We have knowledge about God through his word,

2466. and it's sufficient to help us to do everything that we need to do in this life to please him.

2467. He's equipped us for it in his word.

  2468. By which,

  2469. verse 4,

2470. he's granted to us his precious promises,

2471. so that through them we become partakers of the divine nature,

2472. having escaped the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

  2473. For this reason,

2474. make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue,

  2475. with virtue,

  2476. with knowledge,

  2477. knowledge,

  2478. with self-control,

  2479. self-control with steadfastness,

  2480. steadfastness with godliness,

  2481. godliness with brotherly affection,

  2482. brotherly affection with love,

2483. for if these qualities are yours and are increasing,

2484. they will keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2485. You want to have a life that matters?

2486. You want to have a life that makes a difference?

2487. You want to have a life that is filled up and is fruitful and is progressing?

2488. The word of God is the answer.

2489. And the power of the word to change your life,

  2490. to change my life,

2491. to change the lives of those you love,

2492. to change the lives of those in your community,

  2493. your family,

  2494. and in your workplace,

  2495. wherever you go.

2496. It's the word of God.

2497. They don't need any other evidence.

2498. They don't need to see the empty tomb.

2499. They don't need to have a trip to Israel.

2500. All they need is the power of the word.

2501. And through your prayers and the power of the spirit,

2502. and the message of his word,

2503. he can change and will change a life.

  2504. Do you trust it?

2505. Are you being transformed by it?

2506. I trust that God will help us to be reminded of the significance of opening our Bibles.

  2507. Let's open our Bibles.

2508. May that be an everyday occurrence as we seek to be changed in the likeness of Christ

2509. through the knowledge of God from his word

2510. so that we can be effective and fruitful in the life that God has called us to.

  2511. Let me pray.

2512. Oh Lord, thank you for your word and its power.

2513. And God, we trust you to do your work.

2514. And we pray that our commitment day by day

2515. would be to allow the word of God to have its way in our lives.

2516. That we would not just be hearers of the word,

2517. but also doers of the word.

  2518. Thank you.

  2519. In Jesus' name.

  2520. Amen.
