  1. Well, good morning.

  2. It's good to be back with you.

  3. !

  4. Amen.

  5. My name's Tom Zentz.

  6. My wife, Carrie, and I have been at Maranatha for 41 years.

  7. And I look out here and there's people I don't know.

  8. And we talk and just marvel at the things that God's doing and the fruitfulness that

  9. He's brought to our church.

  10. And we're very grateful.

  11. It's our joy.

  12. And to Christ be the glory, right?

  13. Right?

  14. This morning we have the privilege of maybe peeking into the Word of God to see how that happens.

  15. And it's not because we've figured out something unique.

  16. So I hope that you can pick that out a little bit later.

  17. I have the privilege of wrapping up our study in the Gospel of Luke.

  18. It's been very good, hasn't it?

  19. You know, Pastor started this January of 2022.

  20. So it's been a while.

  21. Some of you weren't even attending our church then.

  22. But it's been a blessing.

  23. And this morning as we look at the final verses of chapter 24, we're going to be looking at

  24. one of the most powerful texts in the Scriptures.

  25. The record of the resurrected Christ appearing to His fearful followers, convincing them of

  26. the Scriptures, not just the Scriptures, but of God at work.

  27. He's going to commission them to global action, to be His witnesses.

  28. Witnessing the victory that Christ secured at the cross and over the grave.

  29. And then we'll conclude with His celebratory ascension.

  30. Let me begin by praying.

  31. Our Father, You are so kind.

  32. Who has shown more love than You?

  33. No one.

  34. And there is no God like You.

  35. In Your sovereign plan, You had in store for Your Son to suffer and die on our behalf.

  36. We don't understand it.

  37. And we don't deserve it.

  38. But we are grateful for Your mercy.

  39. We're grateful for the transformation that You bring into our lives.

  40. Thank You for Your Word.

  41. Thank You for Your Spirit.

  42. This morning as we look into Your Word, we ask that You would open our eyes.

  43. Help us to see the areas that You want us to be transformed in.

  44. The areas that You want to empower us.

  45. Lord, as we've been challenged by the music and as we will be by Your Word,

  46. help us to be Your witnesses.

  47. To tell others who are hurting and broken,

  48. how they can be made whole because of what You, Jesus, have done on the cross.

  49. And because of Your victory over the grave.

  50. Lord, thank You for the way that You have blessed.

  51. We appreciate our pastors.

  52. We pray for Pastor Andrew as he continues to heal.

  53. Give him a swift and complete healing.

  54. Lord, this morning there may be someone here who does not know Jesus.

  55. Whose life is just turned upside down.

  56. And I pray, Father, that Your Spirit would show them from Your Word

  57. the need for repentance and the offer of forgiveness of sins.

  58. We're so grateful how You restore lives.

  59. It's for Your glory, Jesus.

  60. And we praise You in Your name.

  61. Amen.

  62. Amen.

  63. In a moment, we're going to be looking at Luke chapter 24,

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  64. but I want to invite you to open your Bibles first to Luke chapter 1

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  65. to give you a little bit of background.

  66. You recall that as we're in the Gospel of Luke,

  67. it might not be so obvious, but the author is Luke,

  68. under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

  69. And the Gospel of Luke is really just book 1 of a lengthier version

  70. of what he was writing to a man named Theopolis.

  71. Book 2 is the Acts of the Apostles.

  72. And so this morning, we are finishing up the end of book 1 or part 1 of this lengthy book.

  73. And there in chapter 1, if you'd follow along with me in verses 3 and 4, we read this.

  74. It seemed good to me also, that's to Luke, having followed all things closely for some time past,

  75. to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,

  76. that you may have certainty regarding the things that you have been taught.

  77. This morning, let me just share with you what I've been looking at this text about.

  78. We don't know who really Theophilus was.

  79. We can guess.

  80. He was called most excellent Theophilus, probably somebody of importance,

  81. probably in the Roman political system.

  82. We don't know if he was a new believer,

  83. and if Luke's trying to encourage him in his faith.

  84. We don't know if he was somebody seeking to know more about Jesus,

  85. and Luke's trying to show him who Jesus is.

  86. But what I think that Luke is trying to accomplish from books 1 and book 2

  87. is to help Theophilus understand what's happening in his world today.

  88. Because see, when Luke is writing the scripture,

  89. this is decades after the ascension of Jesus Christ.

  90. And what's happening in his world at this time is,

  91. there's a group of these uneducated, untrained, average people

  92. and they're turning the world upside down.

  93. And so I would submit to you that Dr. Luke is writing to give an accurate,

  94. fact-checked, orderly, unique, and persuasive explanation to Theophilus

  95. and to all who read part 1 and part 2 of this lengthier book,

  96. how this uneducated, ordinary group of people are doing this.

  97. How are they so effective at transforming lives?

  98. How are they turning the world upside down?

  99. And I would submit to you that what he says in the book of Luke,

  100. the gospel of Luke,

  101. is that this explanation is not that they just figured out something.

  102. It rests solely on the foundation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  103. Christ.

  104. Would you imagine for a moment that you are Theophilus there in chapter 1?

  105. You received this part 1 of this letter from Luke.

  106. And this is the very first time you're reading through this.

  107. You can imagine as you're following the events of the birth of Christ,

  108. and it's like, wow, just as the scriptures foretold.

  109. The prophets said this is going to happen.

  110. And it is.

  111. It's amazing.

  112. And then you read about how Jesus is doing all these wonderful miracles.

  113. And you hear about the words that he spoke with such authority.

  114. You see the stories of lives changed.

  115. And then all of a sudden you get to this unfair,

  116. this treasonous treatment of Jesus Christ,

  117. even from his own followers.

  118. And you see that it leads to his suffering,

  119. and it leads to the cross.

  120. The very first time you're reading this, just imagine that.

  121. I could see Theophilus just kind of looking up to heaven going,

  122. what are you doing?

  123. This isn't fair.

  124. This isn't right.

  125. But he continues to read.

  126. And then he reads of the resurrection in Luke 24.

  127. And he reads about the accounts of those that encountered the living Jesus Christ,

  128. the one who is risen indeed.

  129. And he says, oh, I think I'm beginning to get it.

  130. Jesus Christ is no longer dead.

  131. He's alive.

  132. He's risen indeed.

  133. And he's actively building his church.

  134. One of those occasions that we heard about last week

  135. was when Jesus approached those two on the road to Emmaus.

  136. Remember that?

  137. And Jesus comes alongside of them and begins talking with them,

  138. asking about what's happened.

  139. And what does he do?

  140. Jesus begins to open their minds

  141. to understand that from the very beginning of Scripture

  142. to the very point there that they have of Scripture,

  143. it all focused on Jesus the Christ.

  144. And their hearts burned within them.

  145. And remember what happened when they got back to their home in Emmaus?

  146. Jesus is like, can we eat?

  147. He liked to ask that question.

  148. Can we eat?

  149. And they started eating.

  150. And as soon as he broke bread,

  151. they recognized him.

  152. And then what?

  153. He just disappeared.

  154. He just disappeared.

  155. And immediately, they're excited.

  156. Immediately, they just said, we got to go back.

  157. And so they make the seven-mile trip back to Jerusalem

  158. as fast as they can.

  159. And they come to the place where the disciples are at

  160. and they have to knock on the door.

  161. John tells us they have to knock on the door

  162. because those doors are locked.

  163. So, the disciples, they were terrified.

  164. Well, let me read it for you.

  165. On the evening of that day, this is John 20,

  166. the first day of the week, the doors being locked,

  167. where the disciples were for fear of the Jews,

  168. Jesus came and stood among them.

  169. Now, friends, I mean, one moment,

  170. they're there talking.

  171. The doors are locked.

  172. And in another moment, the Lord Jesus Christ is there.

  173. That had to be terrifying.

  174. And you and I could be like, oh, come on.

  175. You know, guys, you should know better.

  176. But if that were you and me,

  177. we would be terrified as well.

  178. And so the disciples were thinking that they saw a spirit.

  179. Their lives had been shattered just three days earlier.

  180. The one for whom they've given up everything.

  181. He was taken, he was tortured, and he was killed.

  182. Their dreams, their hopes were crushed.

  183. And then that very morning, earlier,

  184. they heard these reports trickle in.

  185. Somebody has seen Jesus.

  186. They've seen Jesus.

  187. And more and more reports were coming in.

  188. They saw Jesus alive.

  189. Even Peter saw the resurrected Christ.

  190. In fact, when the two from Emmaus

  191. made their way back to the house,

  192. and they were allowed to come into that locked room,

  193. they wanted to share,

  194. we've seen the Christ.

  195. Before they could even say anything,

  196. the rest of the group was saying,

  197. we got news for you.

  198. Peter saw him.

  199. He's really alive.

  200. And they're going like, yeah, yeah, we know.

  201. We saw him too.

  202. And right then,

  203. that's where we come into verse 36 of Luke chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  204. Would you follow along as we talk about the appearance

  205. of the resurrected Christ?

  206. As they were talking about these things,

  207. Jesus himself stood among them.

  208. And then in verse 36, I would say this.

  209. He's going to comfort them.

  210. He gives them his comforting words.

  211. As they were talking about these things,

  212. Jesus himself stood among them and said to them,

  213. peace to you.

  214. And they were startled and frightened and thought they were seeing a spirit.

  215. The words, peace to you,

  216. you're familiar with these words, I believe.

  217. It's a familiar Hebrew greeting, shalom.

  218. But here it signifies something more.

  219. This word signifies wholeness, a completeness, a unity, and a harmony.

  220. I had in some previous notes,

  221. Pastor Andrew one time saying,

  222. when you know Jesus, K-N-O-W, you know peace.

  223. When there is no Jesus, there is no peace.

  224. You see, when life becomes fractured,

  225. when life just doesn't make sense,

  226. the peace of God invites us to have the whole,

  227. the complete, the unified perspective

  228. with our good and loving Lord.

  229. We don't see it.

  230. But by faith, we trust that he is good.

  231. And he is in control.

  232. By faith, we trust that God

  233. is ruling over all the circumstances.

  234. And this is the peace.

  235. This is the wholeness.

  236. This is the wellness

  237. that he brings into the lives of broken people.

  238. Jesus is the prince of peace himself.

  239. We read in Romans 5.1,

  240. Therefore, since we have been justified by faith,

  241. we have what?

  242. Peace.

  243. We have this wholeness.

  244. We have this completeness.

  245. We have peace with God

  246. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  247. Jesus not only offers the disciples his peace,

  248. he invites them to use all of their senses

  249. to recognize who he is.

  250. He wants them to believe that he is indeed

  251. the risen living Lord standing before them.

  252. We're going to look briefly

  253. at some of these convincing proofs.

  254. We could spend a whole hour on these.

  255. And it would be tempting

  256. because it's really cool.

  257. But I just want to go through them quickly.

  258. His convincing proofs, verse 38.

  259. Jesus says this in verse 38.

  260. He said to them,

  261. Why are you troubled?

  262. And why do doubts arise in your hearts?

  263. He's inviting them to use their ability to hear.

  264. Hear me.

  265. I want you to hear me.

  266. Why are you troubled?

  267. Why do doubts arise in your hearts?

  268. This is not like some Jacob Marley ghost

  269. from Christmas past

  270. that's moaning and wailing.

  271. This is Jesus in his resurrected body

  272. speaking normally

  273. just like we would talk to one another.

  274. He's addressing them

  275. about their troubled and doubting hearts.

  276. He's calling them to faith

  277. just as he does us when we're troubled.

  278. When life is turned upside down.

  279. And then he adds this.

  280. He says,

  281. See and touch me.

  282. Look at the marks on my hands and my feet.

  283. He invites them to use their senses.

  284. Jesus says,

  285. See my hands and my feet.

  286. That it is I myself.

  287. And I don't want you to miss this.

  288. When Jesus says,

  289. It is I myself.

  290. These are powerful words.

  291. In fact,

  292. He's inviting them to hear

  293. that He is calling Himself

  294. the I am that I am.

  295. And they had heard this before.

  296. Following Jesus,

  297. they heard Him say,

  298. I am the bread of life.

  299. I am the light of the world.

  300. I am the door of the sheep.

  301. I am the good shepherd.

  302. I am the resurrection and the life.

  303. I am the way,

  304. the truth,

  305. and the life.

  306. And now once again,

  307. He says to them,

  308. It is I myself.

  309. It's me.

  310. I am the Lord.

  311. I am the Lord.

  312. I am your living Lord

  313. right here in person.

  314. Touch me and see.

  315. For a spirit does not have

  316. flesh and bones.

  317. What was Luke's profession?

  318. He was a doctor.

  319. Dr. Luke wants his reader to know

  320. by what Jesus said

  321. that this new resurrected body

  322. is still flesh and bones.

  323. How can flesh and bones

  324. enter a locked room?

  325. I don't know.

  326. I don't.

  327. Apparently this resurrected body

  328. is not limited like ours is.

  329. John MacArthur calls this feature

  330. of the resurrected body

  331. adaptability.

  332. Jesus wanted to be in a locked room.

  333. So He was.

  334. I imagine that if I want to be

  335. in Cincinnati

  336. and I have a resurrected body,

  337. I would be.

  338. It's not limited

  339. like our current bodies.

  340. This may be a stretch,

  341. but in your next two blanks,

  342. I put taste and smell.

  343. We eat fish once or twice a week

  344. in our home.

  345. I think that's no exaggeration.

  346. Right, dear?

  347. We lived in Japan for a decade.

  348. We love fish.

  349. And so when Carrie makes fish

  350. in our kitchen,

  351. I can smell it.

  352. And I like it.

  353. Some of you don't.

  354. But fish smell.

  355. And I think what Jesus is doing

  356. when He says,

  357. do you got something to eat?

  358. And they offer Him broiled fish.

  359. He's inviting them

  360. to use more senses.

  361. Taste and smell.

  362. Verse 41.

  363. And while they still disbelieved for joy.

  364. I think that means

  365. they just couldn't believe

  366. this was happening.

  367. It's like, wow.

  368. And they were marveling.

  369. And He said to them,

  370. have you got anything to eat?

  371. And they gave Him a piece

  372. of broiled fish

  373. and He took it

  374. and He ate before Him.

  375. And we were laughing,

  376. my wife and I,

  377. when we read that passage.

  378. I mean, you can imagine

  379. all the disciples

  380. in that locked room,

  381. Jesus says,

  382. you got anything to eat?

  383. And so they gave Him fish

  384. and they're all just

  385. watching Him eat.

  386. Yeah.

  387. In the same way

  388. that Jesus revealed Himself

  389. to the two in Emmaus

  390. at that house,

  391. when was it that they understood

  392. who He was?

  393. It was after He ate.

  394. It's like,

  395. oh, it is.

  396. It's Him.

  397. It's Him.

  398. I would submit to you

  399. that the appearance

  400. of the resurrected Christ

  401. gave them peace within.

  402. Peace within.

  403. And now we come

  404. to verses 44 and 48.

  405. I have entitled this

  406. The Assignment

  407. of the Resurrected Christ.

  408. In almost the same manner

  409. that Jesus revealed Himself

  410. to the two on the road

  411. to Emmaus,

  412. He does this for those

  413. that are in that locked room.

  414. follow along in verse 44

  415. as Jesus,

  416. He calls them

  417. to understand the Scriptures.

  418. He said to them,

  419. these are my words

  420. that I spoke to you

  421. while I was still with you,

  422. that everything written about me

  423. in the law of Moses

  424. and the prophets

  425. and the Psalms

  426. must be fulfilled.

  427. And then He opened their minds

  428. to understand the Scriptures.

  429. And can't you just hear

  430. Cleopas and that other disciple,

  431. the two on the road to Emmaus,

  432. remember,

  433. it was at the house

  434. and on the way there

  435. that they heard Jesus

  436. do this same thing

  437. and they're going like,

  438. oh, here it comes.

  439. Here it comes.

  440. He's going to talk about

  441. who He is

  442. from the whole beginning to end.

  443. I'm sure they were really excited.

  444. And Jesus does.

  445. He reveals.

  446. The Scriptures focus on the Christ

  447. and He is the Christ.

  448. Everything is unfolding

  449. according to God's plan.

  450. Just as it had been written out.

  451. Aren't you glad you have the Scriptures?

  452. Do you know the perspective we have

  453. is divine?

  454. And I don't mean that

  455. in any bad way.

  456. When we read the Word of God,

  457. God has allowed us

  458. to see events

  459. from His perspective.

  460. We get to see

  461. because if we're in that situation,

  462. if you're Jonah,

  463. you're Jonah

  464. and it's dark

  465. and it's smelly

  466. and you're in a fish.

  467. When you read the Word of God,

  468. you see God's perspective

  469. on the situation.

  470. Some of you here

  471. are in desperate situations.

  472. Some of you are in needs

  473. and your life is fractured

  474. and broken.

  475. Can I tell you,

  476. you need God's perspective.

  477. You need God's peace.

  478. You need the wholeness

  479. that He gives and offers.

  480. You need to understand

  481. the Scriptures.

  482. It's all about Jesus.

  483. He causes them,

  484. He desires for them also,

  485. secondly,

  486. to believe the Scriptures.

  487. Verse 46.

  488. Verse 46 says,

  489. And He said to them,

  490. Thus it is written

  491. that the Christ should suffer

  492. and on the third day

  493. rise from the dead.

  494. Jesus is calling them

  495. to believe,

  496. to believe even the difficult parts

  497. of the Word of God.

  498. I'm reading through Leviticus.

  499. Oh, it's hard.

  500. It's hard to understand some.

  501. But I believe it.

  502. And I believe it points

  503. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  504. And friends,

  505. the Scriptures are there for you

  506. to believe and to obey.

  507. Verse 47.

  508. Verse 47.

  509. Let me back up one thing.

  510. The Word clearly states

  511. that Christ would suffer and die.

  512. And how many times

  513. did Jesus tell His disciples that?

  514. We're going to Jerusalem.

  515. There I'm going to suffer

  516. and I'm going to be killed.

  517. And three days later

  518. I'm going to rise from the dead.

  519. You can read and hear

  520. the Word of God

  521. and it just passes over your head.

  522. You and I are called

  523. to read the Word of God

  524. and to believe it

  525. and to trust in it.

  526. Even when life doesn't make sense.

  527. Even when the words are difficult.

  528. Jesus says,

  529. I'm here.

  530. I'm standing before you

  531. just as I told you.

  532. So believe.

  533. believe.

  534. And then He does something

  535. quite subtly.

  536. Jesus is going to command them

  537. in a way that

  538. we're not used to commanding.

  539. There in verse 47,

  540. He's going to command them

  541. to proclaim the Scriptures.

  542. Let me read it for you

  543. and explain what I mean.

  544. Verse 47.

  545. And that repentance

  546. for the forgiveness of sins

  547. should be proclaimed in His name

  548. to all nations.

  549. Beginning from Jerusalem,

  550. you are witnesses of these things.

  551. Having lived in Japan

  552. for a decade or so,

  553. one of the cultural differences

  554. is that over here,

  555. we're fairly direct.

  556. Not fairly.

  557. We're direct.

  558. If you need something,

  559. you just need it,

  560. you say it.

  561. Not in a lot of Eastern cultures.

  562. They get the point across,

  563. but they say it indirectly.

  564. And here we read,

  565. forgiveness of sins

  566. should be proclaimed.

  567. We have six kids.

  568. They're older now.

  569. But imagine that

  570. when they were teenagers

  571. and we were having guests,

  572. they're going to stay the weekend

  573. and we're going to have those guests

  574. stay in one of my kids' rooms

  575. and Carrie and I,

  576. we go up to the room

  577. and it's a horrible mess.

  578. And I turn to my teenager

  579. and I say,

  580. this room should be clean.

  581. Is that a suggestion?

  582. No, it's not, guys.

  583. I'm saying,

  584. clean the room.

  585. Now, as pressing as it might be

  586. that company's coming

  587. in that illustration,

  588. what Jesus tells his disciples here

  589. is it has eternal ramifications.

  590. The forgiveness of sins

  591. based on the completed work

  592. of Jesus Christ.

  593. He is the only remedy for sin.

  594. Lost, sinful mankind

  595. needs to hear about Jesus Christ.

  596. We know family members

  597. and co-workers

  598. and you do too.

  599. Neighbors

  600. and they're still chained by sin.

  601. Sin still dominates their lives.

  602. What they need

  603. and the only one who can free them

  604. is Jesus Christ, right?

  605. The assignment

  606. of the resurrected Christ

  607. gave them purpose.

  608. We not only have the peace of God

  609. that makes us whole,

  610. we now know what we're to do

  611. and we are to be about

  612. the business of telling people

  613. about Jesus Christ

  614. and sharing the good news

  615. of the gospel.

  616. Next we turn to verses 49 and 50

  617. and we see the authorization

  618. of the resurrected Christ.

  619. Follow along as I read

  620. verse 49 please.

  621. And behold,

  622. I am sending the promise

  623. of my Father unto you.

  624. But stay in the city

  625. until you're clothed

  626. with power from on high.

  627. And he led them out

  628. as far as Bethany

  629. and lifting up his hands

  630. he blessed them.

  631. This phrase,

  632. I'm sending,

  633. points to the authority

  634. of Jesus.

  635. The authority to bestow

  636. the Father's promise

  637. of the Holy Spirit.

  638. And this is the Holy Spirit

  639. that gives us power

  640. from on high.

  641. Matthew says the same thing.

  642. Little different words.

  643. And you're very familiar

  644. with Matthew's account of this

  645. in chapter 28.

  646. This is verses 18 through 20.

  647. And Jesus came

  648. and he said to them,

  649. All authority in heaven

  650. and on earth

  651. has been given to me.

  652. Go therefore

  653. and make disciples

  654. of all nations

  655. baptizing them

  656. in the name of the Father

  657. and of the Son

  658. and of the Holy Spirit.

  659. There's the authorization.

  660. Teaching them to observe

  661. all that I've commanded you

  662. and behold

  663. I am with you always

  664. to the end of the age.

  665. What right do you

  666. and I have

  667. to talk to somebody

  668. whose life is just

  669. burdened by sin

  670. and their life is ruined?

  671. What right do we have

  672. to say to them

  673. to say to them

  674. friend

  675. there's another way

  676. and his name is Jesus

  677. and the path

  678. you're walking on right now

  679. it's not the right way.

  680. In fact

  681. if you keep following

  682. that path

  683. it'll lead to more

  684. more harm

  685. and eventually death.

  686. What right

  687. do we have

  688. to tell somebody that?

  689. God of all creation

  690. who took upon

  691. human flesh

  692. who's called

  693. the word of God

  694. is standing before them

  695. right now

  696. and he's saying

  697. I'm giving you

  698. that right.

  699. You have that authority

  700. because any other way

  701. it leads to

  702. destruction.

  703. destruction.

  704. Paul

  705. writes it this way

  706. in Romans 1 16

  707. for I am not ashamed

  708. of the gospel

  709. for it is

  710. the what?

  711. The power of God

  712. unto salvation

  713. to everyone

  714. who believes

  715. to the Jew first

  716. and also to the Greek.

  717. and then

  718. Dr. Luke

  719. in part 2

  720. of his book

  721. Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  722. he puts it this way

  723. these are very familiar

  724. verses

  725. he reveals this promise

  726. of the spirit

  727. at Pentecost

  728. as one of power

  729. in chapter 1

  730. verse 8

  731. but you will receive

  732. power

  733. when the Holy Spirit

  734. has come upon you

  735. and you will be

  736. my witnesses

  737. in Jerusalem

  738. and in all Judea

  739. and Samaria

  740. and to the end

  741. of the earth.

  742. You see

  743. for the disciples

  744. in that locked room

  745. frightened

  746. fearful

  747. the authorization

  748. now of

  749. of the resurrected

  750. Christ

  751. gave them

  752. power within

  753. they had peace

  754. within

  755. they had purpose

  756. within

  757. now they have

  758. power

  759. within

  760. and then we come

  761. to this concluding

  762. scene of Luke's

  763. gospel

  764. the ascension

  765. of the resurrected

  766. Christ

  767. guys this is one

  768. of the most

  769. overlooked events

  770. in the life

  771. of Jesus Christ

  772. its impact

  773. however

  774. is significant

  775. please follow along

  776. as I read

  777. verses 51

  778. to 53

  779. this is the

  780. ascension

  781. of the resurrected

  782. Christ

  783. while he blessed

  784. them

  785. he parted from

  786. them

  787. and was carried

  788. up into heaven

  789. and they

  790. worshipped him

  791. and returned

  792. to Jerusalem

  793. with great joy

  794. and were

  795. continually

  796. in the temple

  797. blessing God

  798. Luke

  799. here concludes

  800. his gospel

  801. and what he's

  802. going to do

  803. is

  804. chronologically

  805. truncate

  806. over a month

  807. into a few

  808. verses

  809. in Acts chapter

  810. one

  811. he gives a little

  812. bit more

  813. explanation

  814. so I want us

  815. to see that

  816. so in Acts

  817. chapter one

  818. what we read

  819. is this

  820. in the first

  821. book

  822. O Theophilus

  823. and here he is

  824. addressing Theophilus

  825. again

  826. in the first

  827. book

  828. that's the

  829. gospel of Luke

  830. O Theophilus

  831. I have dealt

  832. with all that

  833. Jesus began to

  834. do and teach

  835. until the day

  836. he was taken

  837. up

  838. that is the

  839. ascension

  840. that's where we're

  841. at at the very

  842. end of Luke

  843. 24

  844. after he had

  845. given commands

  846. see I told you

  847. it wasn't

  848. suggestions

  849. it was

  850. commands

  851. after he had

  852. given commands

  853. through the

  854. Holy Spirit

  855. to the apostles

  856. whom he had

  857. chosen

  858. he presented

  859. himself alive

  860. to them

  861. after his

  862. suffering

  863. by many

  864. proofs

  865. appearing to

  866. them during

  867. 40 days

  868. and speaking

  869. excuse me

  870. and speaking

  871. about the

  872. kingdom of

  873. God

  874. and while

  875. staying with

  876. them he

  877. ordered them

  878. not to

  879. depart from

  880. Jerusalem

  881. but to

  882. wait for

  883. the promise

  884. of the

  885. father

  886. which he

  887. said you

  888. heard from

  889. me

  890. for John

  891. baptized with

  892. water

  893. but you

  894. will be

  895. baptized with

  896. the Holy

  897. Spirit

  898. not many

  899. days from

  900. now

  901. but you

  902. will receive

  903. power

  904. when the

  905. Holy Spirit

  906. has come

  907. upon you

  908. and you

  909. will be

  910. my

  911. witnesses

  912. in

  913. Jerusalem

  914. and in

  915. all Judea

  916. and Samaria

  917. to the end

  918. of the earth

  919. and when he

  920. had said

  921. these things

  922. as they

  923. were looking

  924. on he

  925. was lifted

  926. up and a

  927. cloud took

  928. him out of

  929. their sight

  930. so what's so

  931. significant about

  932. the ascension

  933. it was much

  934. more than the

  935. disciples just

  936. looking up into

  937. the sky watching

  938. Jesus in a cloud

  939. going up and up

  940. and up until he

  941. disappeared

  942. you see Jesus

  943. was returning

  944. as king of kings

  945. and lord of lords

  946. what we

  947. couldn't see

  948. what the

  949. disciples

  950. couldn't see

  951. on earth

  952. was that in

  953. heaven

  954. oh there was

  955. a celebration

  956. there was a

  957. victory

  958. I'll call it a

  959. dance

  960. there was a

  961. party

  962. Jesus Christ

  963. appeared to

  964. them in that

  965. locked room

  966. and they didn't

  967. realize

  968. what he had

  969. just done

  970. he had just

  971. rose from the

  972. dead

  973. he had

  974. defeated

  975. Satan

  976. he defeated

  977. death

  978. he defeated

  979. hell

  980. the power

  981. of sin

  982. he is the

  983. victorious one

  984. standing right

  985. there in front

  986. of them

  987. he's God

  988. in the flesh

  989. and now he's

  990. going back

  991. and it's a

  992. celebration

  993. it's a

  994. coronation

  995. and it's

  996. going to be

  997. an amazing

  998. event that he

  999. was going to

  1000. all they saw

  1001. was sky

  1002. Paul put it

  1003. this way in

  1004. Philippians 2

    Philippians 2:9–11

  1005. verses 9

  1006. through 11

  1007. therefore God

  1008. has not just

  1009. exalted

  1010. but God

  1011. has highly

  1012. exalted

  1013. him and

  1014. bestowed on

  1015. him the name

  1016. that is above

  1017. every name

  1018. so that at

  1019. the name of

  1020. Jesus every

  1021. knee should

  1022. bow in

  1023. heaven and

  1024. on earth and

  1025. under the

  1026. earth and

  1027. that every

  1028. tongue should

  1029. confess that

  1030. Jesus Christ

  1031. is Lord to

  1032. the glory of

  1033. God

  1034. and not

  1035. only is

  1036. Jesus

  1037. returning to

  1038. a coronation

  1039. to that

  1040. celebration

  1041. he's returning

  1042. to the holy

  1043. of holies

  1044. as our

  1045. great high

  1046. priest

  1047. Hebrews 4

  1048. 14 says

  1049. this

  1050. since we

  1051. have a

  1052. great high

  1053. priest who

  1054. has passed

  1055. through the

  1056. heavens

  1057. Jesus the

  1058. son of God

  1059. let us hold

  1060. fast our

  1061. confession

  1062. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 8:1

  1063. 8 verses 1

  1064. and 2 says

  1065. now the point

  1066. and what we're

  1067. saying is this

  1068. we have such

  1069. a high priest

  1070. one who is

  1071. seated at the

  1072. right hand of

  1073. the throne of

  1074. the majesty in

  1075. heaven a

  1076. minister in the

  1077. holy places in

  1078. the true tent

  1079. that God the

  1080. Lord has set

  1081. up not man

  1082. friends aren't

  1083. you glad that

  1084. Jesus Christ is

  1085. actively praying

  1086. for you as

  1087. your high

  1088. priest

  1089. that's 1

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  1090. John chapter

  1091. 2

  1092. he intercedes

  1093. on your behalf

  1094. and my behalf

  1095. when the

  1096. accuser says

  1097. Tom

  1098. look

  1099. he's at it

  1100. again

  1101. Lord Jesus

  1102. is saying

  1103. I've already

  1104. paid for that

  1105. I've completely

  1106. covered that

  1107. isn't that

  1108. amazing

  1109. that is the

  1110. repentance of

  1111. sins

  1112. repentance and

  1113. forgiveness of

  1114. sins that we

  1115. are witnesses

  1116. of

  1117. and not only

  1118. is Jesus

  1119. return at this

  1120. point returning

  1121. as king of

  1122. kings to his

  1123. coronation not

  1124. only is he

  1125. returning as a

  1126. great high priest

  1127. to the holy of

  1128. holies guys he's

  1129. just returning

  1130. home he's going

  1131. home remember

  1132. what the father

  1133. said at his

  1134. bad Jesus

  1135. baptism this is

  1136. my beloved son

  1137. hear him

  1138. the father and

  1139. the son love

  1140. each other

  1141. Jesus had just

  1142. gone through

  1143. a terrible

  1144. separation from

  1145. his father

  1146. at the cross

  1147. and now in

  1148. victory he

  1149. stands and

  1150. now in victory

  1151. he returns

  1152. home

  1153. in fact

  1154. Peter puts it

  1155. this way in

  1156. 1 Peter 3

  1157. there in verse

  1158. 21

  1159. through the

  1160. resurrection of

  1161. Jesus Christ

  1162. who has gone

  1163. into heaven and

  1164. is at the right

  1165. hand of God

  1166. with angels and

  1167. authorities and

  1168. powers having been

  1169. subjected to him

  1170. Jesus is with his

  1171. father

  1172. it's a

  1173. home going

  1174. now I want

  1175. you to note the

  1176. response of the

  1177. disciples as they're

  1178. hearing all of

  1179. this they're still in

  1180. the locked room

  1181. they were taken

  1182. out later

  1183. 40 days later

  1184. to the

  1185. ascension

  1186. and look what it

  1187. says in verse

  1188. 52 and 53

  1189. after Jesus

  1190. rose up in the

  1191. clouds they

  1192. worshipped him

  1193. and returned to

  1194. Jerusalem with

  1195. great joy

  1196. and were

  1197. continually in the

  1198. temple blessing

  1199. God

  1200. for those

  1201. confused and

  1202. broken disciples

  1203. angels the

  1204. ascension of the

  1205. resurrected Christ

  1206. 40 days later

  1207. would give them

  1208. hearts filled with

  1209. praise within

  1210. praise within

  1211. they celebrated the

  1212. victory of Christ

  1213. over death and

  1214. sin

  1215. Jesus their Lord and

  1216. Savior is risen

  1217. indeed

  1218. amen

1219. I think what Luke is

  1220. saying to Theophilus

  1221. and to all the

  1222. readers of Luke and

  1223. Acts is this

  1224. the appearance of the

  1225. resurrected Christ to

  1226. his disciples it gave

  1227. them peace within

  1228. life was

  1229. torn apart

1230. but the peace of God

  1231. brings it back and

  1232. makes it whole

  1233. the assignment of the

  1234. resurrected Christ gave

  1235. them purpose within

  1236. we now know what

  1237. we're here to do

  1238. you know what you're

  1239. here to do

  1240. it's a matter of

  1241. obedience isn't it

  1242. the authorization of

  1243. the resurrected Christ

  1244. gave them power

  1245. within

  1246. you and I

1247. if you believe in the

  1248. Lord Jesus Christ as

  1249. your Savior have the

  1250. Holy Spirit within

  1251. there is no more

  1252. power that you need

1253. you have the power of

  1254. the word of God

  1255. the power of the

  1256. spirit of God

  1257. proclaim the good

  1258. news and let God

  1259. work

  1260. and the ascension of

  1261. the resurrected Christ

  1262. it gave them hearts

  1263. of praise within

1264. well I had to ask

  1265. myself as I was

  1266. reading this

  1267. how did the disciples

  1268. really respond to

  1269. receiving this peace

  1270. this purpose this

  1271. power and this heart

  1272. of praise

1273. did it really make a

  1274. difference in their

  1275. lives

  1276. there's a lot of

  1277. passages we could go

1278. to we could go to

  1279. Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1280. you could look at

  1281. 1st John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

1282. but I want us just to

1283. take a moment to see

  1284. something and Dr. Luke

1285. is going to be also

  1286. recording this in

  1287. chapter 10 of his

  1288. second book of Acts

  1289. in Acts chapter 10

    Acts 10 chapter mention

1290. follow along as I just

  1291. go through verses 34

1292. to 36 this is the

  1293. background is where

  1294. Cornelius and his

  1295. family are going to

1296. come to trust by faith

  1297. in the Lord Jesus

  1298. Christ and in that

  1299. context it says this

  1300. verse 34 so Peter

1301. and guys this is the

  1302. same Peter that

  1303. denied the Lord Jesus

  1304. Christ that said I

  1305. don't know him

  1306. I swear I don't know

1307. him now it's the same

  1308. Peter what a what a

  1309. remarkable story of

  1310. God's grace and mercy

  1311. so Peter opened his

  1312. mouth and he said

  1313. truly I understand

  1314. that God shows no

  1315. partiality but in

  1316. every nation anyone

  1317. who fears him and

1318. does what is right is

  1319. acceptable to him and

1320. as for the word that

  1321. he sent to Israel

  1322. that's the scriptures

  1323. preaching good news of

  1324. peace through Jesus

1325. Christ he is Lord of

  1326. all you yourselves know

  1327. what happened throughout

  1328. all Judea beginning from

  1329. Galilee after the

  1330. baptism that John

  1331. proclaimed how God

  1332. anointed Jesus of

  1333. Nazareth with the Holy

  1334. Spirit and with power

1335. he went about doing good

1336. and healing all who were

1337. oppressed by the devil for

1338. God was with him and we

1339. are what we are his

1340. witnesses of all that he

1341. did both in the country of

1342. the Jews and in Jerusalem

1343. they put him to death by

1344. hanging him on a tree but

1345. God raised him on the

1346. third day and he made him

1347. to appear not to all the

1348. people but to us who had

1349. been chosen by God as

  1350. witnesses who ate and

1351. drank with him after he

1352. rose from the dead and he

1353. commanded us to preach to

1354. the people and to testify

1355. that he is the one appointed

1356. by God to be the judge and

1357. the living and the dead and

1358. to him all the prophets bear

  1359. witness that everyone who

  1360. believes in him receives

  1361. forgiveness of sins through

1362. his name I think they

  1363. understood I think the

  1364. Theophilus was starting to

1365. see oh it's not about the

  1366. disciples it's about Jesus

1367. Christ and what he does

  1368. through ordinary people who

1369. obey the word of God and

1370. proclaim the name of Jesus

  1371. guys that's that's a

1372. challenge for us there are

1373. people that you know whose

1374. lives are shattered they need

1375. to be made whole and you

1376. can't do it but you know

1377. somebody who can and that is

1378. the Lord Jesus Christ and

  1379. that's our calling isn't it

1380. to tell people about Jesus

1381. may the Lord help us do that

  1382. this week let's pray

1383. father we have the incredible

1384. privilege first of all of

  1385. being called your children

1386. thank you for the wholeness and

1387. the oneness that we have with

1388. you through Jesus Christ with

1389. humility we just say thank you

1390. Lord that you we pray that you

1391. would give us opportunity and

1392. boldness even this week to

1393. testify of the good things that

1394. Jesus has done but not just the

1395. good what he has done at the

  1396. cross and through the

  1397. resurrection the forgiveness of

  1398. sins that's available Lord

1399. perhaps there's someone right now

1400. whose life is just all messed up

  1401. everything's falling apart I

1402. pray that the good news of

1403. Jesus Christ that through that

1404. word you would make them whole

  1405. through their repentance and

1406. trust in you Lord that you would

  1407. bring salvation

1408. thank you for your work here at

  1409. Maranatha

1410. thank you for the commitment to

1411. the word of God and the

1412. preaching of the word of God

1413. and we ask that you would

  1414. continue to glorify yourself

1415. Lord be pleased to use us we

1416. pray this in Jesus name amen

  1417. thank you you're dismissed
