  1. Well, good morning. If we haven't gotten a chance to meet yet, my name is Daniel, and I've

  2. ! had the special privilege of coming here with my family for the past nine years or so, since 2016.

  3. And most recently, I've been at Cedarville University, getting my MDiv there. I'm kind of in my fourth

  4. year of the MDiv out of a five-year program. And this summer, I've also been able to work here as

  5. the intern, and I'm going to be been able to work alongside the pastors, which has just been really

  6. cool just to see God's faithfulness in their lives and just the way that they love the church and have

  7. been serving them. And just learning from and growing from their example has been just a blessing

  8. to me. And even just being able to preach this morning is also just an encouragement.

  9. So, if you have a copy of God's Word, would you just please turn with me to Matthew 11, 25 through 30?

  10. You can also find this in your pew Bibles in front of you on page 816. But before we begin,

  11. let's go ahead and just open with another word of prayer.

  12. God, we come to you as little children who need help. We recognize that you are a great God

  13. who is Lord of heaven and earth, and we can depend on you, as we just sang.

  14. And so, God, I just ask that you would help us to come and understand. Open our eyes that we may

  15. behold wondrous things from your law. Please help turn our eyes away from looking at worthless things

  16. and give us life in your Word. Help us to come to you and to enjoy you, to be satisfied in you,

  17. and to seek to glorify you in all that we do. May we worship you together as I preach the Word,

  18. and may we be an encouragement to one another as we are gathered together. In your name I pray. Amen.

  19. So, I titled this message this morning, Rest for Your Souls, because as we read through this passage,

  20. it mentions rest two times. And I believe that rest is the culmination of this passage. And it's also

  21. seen in the rest of Scripture, this call to rest. In the beginning of the Bible, we see that God rested

  22. from his work on the seventh day, and that he even called his people to rest on the Sabbath and to keep

  23. it holy. And even at the very end of the Bible, in Revelation, we see the promise for eternal rest,

  24. a rest in God's presence. And I know normally when I think about the idea of rest, it's easy to

  25. associate it with just sleeping in or taking a nap, watching my favorite show or movie, or just doing

  26. the things that I enjoy, or hanging out with my friends. But when we think about what the Bible calls

  27. rest, sure, it involves being able to rest physically, but it goes deeper than that. And it points out

  28. that true rest, a rest for your souls, is resting in and coming in the presence of God. And so, not only do

  29. we, to those who believe in God, have a hope in a future rest, eternal rest with God, but there's also

  30. a call to have a present rest. A rest in the presence of our God, our Savior, Jesus Christ, and his

  31. spirit that he gives to all who come. So again, we're going to be reading from Matthew 11, 25 through 30,

  32. which says,

  33. So today I just want to hone in on and focus on the call to come and

  34. take, and how coming to Jesus and taking his yoke and learning from him leads to true rest for your

  35. souls. If you have a bulletin or are taking notes, I'm just going to be walking through these five

  36. points. Come to the king. Come as children. Come with your burdens. Come and take. And finally,

  37. we'll end with take and rest. So again, my first point is, come to the king. This passage opens in

  38. verse 25 with Jesus praying,

  39. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and

  40. understanding, but have revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for such is your gracious will.

  41. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. And no one knows the Son except the Father,

  42. and no one knows the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom he chooses to reveal him.

  43. So I want to point out to begin with that Jesus claims to be equal with the Father. We see this in a

  44. couple ways. One, both the Father and the Son are active in revealing. We see the Father in verse 25

  45. active in revealing the teachings of the kingdom to little children. And then in verse 27, the Son is

  46. active in revealing the Father to those whom he chooses to reveal. Then you also see that the Father

  47. is Lord of heaven and earth, and the Son has been given all things from his Father.

  48. And so you may wonder, okay, so why is it important that the Son claims to be equal with the Father?

  49. Why is that significant? Because it is from this equal authority with the Father that Jesus says,

  50. come to me. It's astonishing that the Son who is equal with the Lord of heaven and earth would take an

  51. interest in us and call us to come. Isaiah 40 kind of paints a picture of who we are as people.

  52. He says that in earlier in the passage that all flesh is like grass and they'll fade away like the flower,

  53. but God's word remains forever. But then it says later how we must behold our God and our creator.

  54. And even in verse 25 and 26, it says,

  55. To whom then will you compare me? That I should be like him, says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes and see

  56. who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them by name, by the greatness of his

  57. might. And because he is strong in power, not one is missing. Our God is a glorious creator.

  58. He is the Lord of heaven and earth. All that we can see in creation is his. The mountains, the oceans,

  59. the sunrise and sunsets are all due to God's creation and his power as Lord. But then he also,

  60. with his power and authority, handed over all things to his son. And as Paul writes in Philippians 2,

  61. it says that,

  62. Therefore, God highly exalted him, Jesus, and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

  63. so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

  64. and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. Jesus rightly claims

  65. to be equal with the Father because all things have been handed over to him.

  66. It is to his name that every knee should bow and every tongue confess.

  67. Just thinking about who he is as king should be enough reason for us to come to him.

  68. But not only is he king, he actually calls us. It's shocking that the one with authority over all

  69. things, instead of commanding us to come, he actually willingly and openly invites us.

  70. He pleads with us. He pleads with us. He's equal with the Father, and yet he invites and pleads with us to come to him.

  71. Throughout Matthew's gospel, he'll actually argue that Jesus is king. And so at the very end of his gospel,

  72. he ends with the great commission, which begins by saying,

  73. He has all authority, but he is also gentle and lowly of heart.

  74. Again, the invitation is open to all. Not as just one of the ways that we can find rest,

  75. but Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.

  76. He will say,

  77. Come to me and find rest. Take my yoke and find rest for your souls.

  78. If you are looking for rest, if you are seeking to be satisfied, look to Jesus.

  79. What does it mean to come to Jesus?

  80. Well, the times that I recognize that I'm in need and that I have nothing are the times that I go to places for help.

  81. So when I'm hungry, I'll go to places that have food.

  82. When I'm thirsty, I'll go to places that have water.

  83. Or if I'm tired, I'll go to my bed to sleep.

  84. If I need to get a lot done, I'll go to a quiet place to work productively.

  85. But God, the Lord of heaven and earth, has the authority and power to meet every need.

  86. There is no need that we have that he cannot meet.

  87. And I've heard it said that we aren't to give God just part of our lives.

  88. Instead, we're supposed to give him all of our lives, which I think is true.

  89. But I think it can also be hard to understand, okay, what does it mean to give God all of my life?

  90. What does it mean to come to him with all of my life?

  91. But when I understand that I have a need,

  92. and I need to go somewhere to meet that need,

  93. and God is able to meet every need,

  94. I think it helps us understand, okay, then I can come to him with my whole life,

  95. because my whole life is in need of him.

  96. And so when I wake up in the morning,

  97. my first thought and prayer should be,

  98. God, I need you today.

  99. Help me as I face various temptations and doubts and worries today.

  100. Help me complete the tasks that I have on my list,

  101. or talk with my coworkers and give grace

  102. to be patient with my kids,

  103. or to enjoy your presence.

  104. God, help me.

  105. And then we go to his word,

  106. recognizing that he is able to satisfy us,

  107. that we can enjoy it.

  108. And when we get to the end of our days,

  109. we can also, before going to bed,

  110. thank him for his presence and his help and his comfort,

  111. that he's come alongside of us,

  112. and he's given us what we needed to sustain us

  113. and to give us faith each day.

  114. As I've been studying this passage,

  115. I realize that I have nothing.

  116. I am desperately in need,

  117. and I am extremely weak on my own.

  118. And so when I come,

  119. I come to him with my whole life,

  120. because my whole life is in need of him.

  121. There's not a single part of me

  122. that I do not need God and his sustaining help.

  123. So have you come to a point of recognizing

  124. you are completely in need of God?

  125. You must submit yourself daily to your King Jesus.

  126. Coming to Jesus as our King

  127. and submitting to the Father is necessary

  128. if we want to find true rest for our souls.

  129. And if you turn back in your Bibles,

  130. one page or so,

  131. to Matthew 9, 11 through 13,

  132. it says,

  133. we come to him with our righteousness,

  134. seeking to impress him.

  135. We come with our burdens,

  136. seeking his help.

  137. We come with our sin,

  138. our fears,

  139. our pain,

  140. and our need.

  141. And he is able to meet those needs.

  142. I come to Jesus because I am sick

  143. and in need of healing.

  144. I am blind and I need sight.

  145. I am lame and I need to walk.

  146. I am unclean,

  147. but Jesus can make me clean.

  148. I am a sinner,

  149. but he can give me

  150. and offer me forgiveness.

  151. No one else can meet these needs.

  152. No one else can give us rest.

  153. So come to the King.

  154. Second,

  155. we are to come as children.

  156. Now,

  157. when I think of times

  158. when my authorities have called me to come,

  159. my first thought is normally,

  160. okay,

  161. what did I do wrong?

  162. But I think our image of authority

  163. has been tainted by culture

  164. and it kind of has negative connotations.

  165. We see authorities sometimes

  166. as distant or insensitive or selfish,

  167. but our God is none of these.

  168. So instead,

  169. we are also to come as children.

  170. There's a difference between the way

  171. I come to a boss

  172. and the way that I come to a father

  173. or someone that I know genuinely loves me.

  174. The father has hidden these things

  175. from the wise and understanding,

  176. but has revealed them to little children.

  177. I don't remember this being true

  178. about myself per se,

  179. but I can think of a moment

  180. where I saw a little child

  181. go to the top of this playground.

  182. You know,

  183. they made the treacherous trek

  184. up the playground

  185. to the highest slide,

  186. but when they got there,

  187. they were paralyzed by fear.

  188. And when they looked down,

  189. they were unable to go down.

  190. So their father

  191. patiently came to the bottom of their slide,

  192. looked up to their kid,

  193. and said,

  194. come on,

  195. you can do it.

  196. In that moment,

  197. the child is freed from their fear.

  198. It may still take a couple moments

  199. of contemplation,

  200. but they're finally able

  201. to go to their father.

  202. They weren't afraid

  203. of their father's call,

  204. but they are empowered by it.

  205. As a child,

  206. it was the authority of my dad

  207. that brought comfort and peace.

  208. I knew that when I came to my dad,

  209. I knew everything would be okay.

  210. I could come to him with my burdens,

  211. my questions,

  212. my doubts,

  213. and it didn't matter what it was.

  214. It didn't matter the fears I faced.

  215. I knew that my dad

  216. was willing to help me

  217. because of his love for me.

  218. I knew that he cared for my good

  219. and that he could do something

  220. about my problems.

  221. What did I do

  222. to deserve his love for me?

  223. Nothing.

  224. As a child,

  225. I never did anything

  226. that could earn my dad's love.

  227. As a child,

  228. I had nothing to lose

  229. but everything to gain

  230. when I came to

  231. and listened to my father.

  232. Our heavenly father

  233. is Lord of heaven and earth

  234. and he has chosen

  235. to graciously reveal himself

  236. to little children.

  237. He reveals himself

  238. to those who have

  239. nothing to lose,

  240. but everything

  241. to gain.

  242. The son will show

  243. us the glory

  244. of God

  245. if we come to the cross

  246. as needy children.

  247. What a privilege

  248. it is to know

  249. the father

  250. and the son.

  251. I get to participate

  252. in knowing God.

  253. Not because I'm

  254. a great person,

  255. not because of my wisdom,

  256. but because

  257. I am a child

  258. to whom God

  259. has graciously

  260. revealed himself to.

  261. I am nothing,

  262. but God

  263. is my everything.

  264. The invitation

  265. to be called

  266. children of God

  267. is open to all.

  268. Paul even writes

  269. in Romans 8,

  270. 14 through 16,

  271. it says,

  272. for all who are led

  273. by the spirit

  274. of God

  275. are sons of God.

  276. For you did not

  277. receive the spirit

  278. of slavery

  279. to fall back

  280. into fear,

  281. but you received

  282. the spirit

  283. of adoption

  284. as sons

  285. by whom we cry,

  286. Abba,

  287. Father.

  288. The spirit himself

  289. bears witness

  290. with our spirit

  291. that we are children

  292. of God.

  293. And third,

  294. we're going to

  295. talk about

  296. coming with

  297. your burdens.

  298. come with

  299. your burdens.

  300. Are you burdened

  301. by the weight

  302. of your sin?

  303. Are you

  304. constantly

  305. controlled

  306. by anxiety?

  307. Are you

  308. relentlessly

  309. ruled by fear?

  310. Have you

  311. surrendered yourself

  312. to sorrow?

  313. Are you

  314. burdened

  315. by thoughts

  316. that you are

  317. worthless

  318. or without value?

  319. Are you

  320. struggling

  321. with thoughts

  322. about how

  323. you're going

  324. to make it?

  325. Maybe it's

  326. financial

  327. stresses

  328. or things

  329. at work,

  330. frustrations

  331. with family

  332. or friends

  333. or medical

  334. issues.

  335. Are you

  336. exhausted

  337. by your

  338. pursuit

  339. of just

  340. doing

  341. the right

  342. things?

  343. Well,

  344. Jesus says

  345. to you,

  346. come to

  347. me.

  348. Come to

  349. me,

  350. all who

  351. labor

  352. and are

  353. heavy laden

  354. and I,

  355. I will

  356. give you

  357. rest.

  358. Take my

  359. yoke upon

  360. you and

  361. learn from

  362. me for

  363. I am

  364. gentle and

  365. lowly of

  366. heart and

  367. you will

  368. find rest

  369. for your

  370. souls.

  371. Repent,

  372. turn away

  373. from your

  374. sins,

  375. confess

  376. them and

  377. come to

  378. Christ.

  379. If you are

  380. burdened by

  381. fear and

  382. sorrow,

  383. bring them

  384. honestly to

  385. Jesus because

  386. he will

  387. listen and

  388. he cares.

  389. he offers

  390. peace and

  391. hope and

  392. rest.

  393. The

  394. father doesn't

  395. reveal them to

  396. little children

  397. expecting us to

  398. bring anything to

  399. the table.

  400. Jesus calls us

  401. to come with

  402. our burdens.

  403. He doesn't

  404. call people

  405. have everything

  406. figured out.

  407. Jesus calls

  408. the weary

  409. and burdened

  410. and he calls

  411. us to come

  412. and find

  413. rest.

  414. Throughout

  415. Jesus'

  416. earthly ministry,

  417. people came

  418. to him

  419. with many

  420. burdens.

  421. If you

  422. even look

  423. at chapter

  424. 11,

  425. verse 2,

  426. it says,

  427. Now when

  428. John heard

  429. in prison

  430. about the

  431. deeds of

  432. Christ,

  433. he sent

  434. word by

  435. his

  436. disciples

  437. and said

  438. to them,

  439. Are you

  440. the one

  441. who is

  442. to come

  443. or shall

  444. we look

  445. for another?

  446. And Jesus

  447. answered them,

  448. Go and

  449. tell John

  450. what you

  451. hear and

  452. see.

  453. The blind

  454. receive their

  455. sight,

  456. the lame

  457. walk,

  458. lepers

  459. are cleansed,

  460. the deaf

  461. hear,

  462. the dead

  463. are raised

  464. up,

  465. and the

  466. poor have

  467. good news

  468. preached to

  469. them.

  470. Jesus'

  471. ministry was

  472. defined by

  473. compassion.

  474. He showed

  475. compassion to

  476. the tax

  477. collectors,

  478. compassion to

  479. the sinners.

  480. He demonstrated

  481. compassion to

  482. the outcasts,

  483. to the sick,

  484. to the deaf,

  485. to the lame,

  486. and he will

  487. show compassion

  488. to you too.

  489. This compassion

  490. is founded in

  491. Jesus'

  492. character.

  493. Father,

  494. he is gentle

  495. and lowly

  496. of heart.

  497. He is a

  498. merciful and

  499. sympathetic

  500. high priest

  501. who intercedes

  502. for us with

  503. the Father,

  504. and he

  505. offers us

  506. rest for

  507. our souls.

  508. He says

  509. that my

  510. yoke is

  511. easy and

  512. my burden

  513. is light.

  514. Soon after

  515. Jesus rose

  516. from the

  517. grave,

  518. false teachers

  519. came into

  520. the church

  521. and preached

  522. that faith

  523. alone was

  524. not enough

  525. and that

  526. they had to

  527. add works

  528. and good

  529. deeds in

  530. order to

  531. earn God's

  532. favor,

  533. in order to

  534. free themselves

  535. from these

  536. burdens that

  537. they bore.

  538. But this is

  539. not the

  540. gospel.

  541. Paul writes

  542. in Galatians

  543. 3.10,

  544. he says,

  545. for all who

  546. rely on

  547. works of

  548. the law

  549. are under

  550. a curse.

  551. And then

  552. again in

  553. 5.1,

  554. he explains

  555. the purpose

  556. of why

  557. we are

  558. saved.

  559. He says

  560. that Christ

  561. has freed

  562. us.

  563. For freedom

  564. Christ has

  565. set us

  566. free.

  567. Stand

  568. firm

  569. therefore

  570. and do

  571. not submit

  572. again to

  573. a yoke

  574. of slavery.

  575. Christ has

  576. called us

  577. to lay

  578. down our

  579. burdens

  580. and legalism.

  581. Laying

  582. down our

  583. good works,

  584. trying to

  585. earn God's

  586. favor,

  587. and actually

  588. just trusting

  589. in God

  590. who can

  591. provide for

  592. us in our

  593. need.

  594. Where do

  595. you find

  596. yourself going

  597. with your

  598. burdens?

  599. Do you

  600. just find

  601. yourself trying

  602. to escape?

  603. Do you

  604. find yourself

  605. trying to

  606. keep yourself

  607. busy?

  608. Or do you

  609. go to

  610. Jesus?

  611. Do you

  612. come to

  613. his word

  614. and prayer?

  615. Do you

  616. seek

  617. encouragement

  618. and counsel

  619. from the

  620. church

  621. and from

  622. your

  623. leaders?

  624. God

  625. offers

  626. forgiveness

  627. for your

  628. sins.

  629. He offers

  630. hope amidst

  631. your trials.

  632. He offers

  633. peace

  634. through his

  635. word and

  636. through his

  637. spirit.

  638. Which doesn't

  639. necessarily mean

  640. that everything

  641. is going to

  642. become easier.

  643. He may not

  644. change your

  645. circumstances,

  646. but he

  647. does offer

  648. hope.

  649. He's offered

  650. his word.

  651. He's offered

  652. a relationship

  653. with him.

  654. So we

  655. must not

  656. turn to

  657. just

  658. busyness

  659. or

  660. escape

  661. as a

  662. means for

  663. rest.

  664. We must

  665. come to

  666. Jesus.

  667. John

  668. describes in

  669. his gospel

  670. that many

  671. of his

  672. disciples

  673. turned back

  674. and no

  675. longer

  676. walked

  677. with him.

  678. And so

  679. Jesus

  680. asked the

  681. twelve,

  682. do you

  683. want to

  684. go away

  685. as well?

  686. And Peter

  687. answered him,

  688. Lord, to

  689. whom shall

  690. we go?

  691. You have

  692. the words

  693. of eternal

  694. life.

  695. And we

  696. have believed

  697. and we

  698. have come

  699. to know

  700. that you

  701. are the

  702. Holy One

  703. of God.

  704. We must

  705. not turn to

  706. anyone or

  707. anything else.

  708. It is only

  709. in Jesus

  710. that we

  711. can find

  712. rest from

  713. our burdens.

  714. Come as

  715. you are.

  716. Charles

  717. Spurgeon

  718. says,

  719. without

  720. money,

  721. come.

  722. without

  723. merit,

  724. come.

  725. Without

  726. preparation,

  727. come.

  728. It is

  729. just.

  730. Come.

  731. Come now.

  732. Come as

  733. you are.

  734. Come with

  735. your burdens.

  736. Come with

  737. your yoke.

  738. Though the

  739. yoke be

  740. the yoke

  741. of the

  742. devil and

  743. the burden

  744. be the

  745. burden

  746. of sin,

  747. yet come

  748. as you

  749. are and

  750. the promise

  751. shall be

  752. fulfilled

  753. to you.

  754. I will

  755. give

  756. you rest.

  757. The rest

  758. is not

  759. earned.

  760. It is

  761. a gift

  762. freely

  763. given

  764. to those

  765. who

  766. come.

  767. If we

  768. had to

  769. come on

  770. our own,

  771. we would

  772. stand in

  773. fearful

  774. judgment.

  775. But we

  776. come with

  777. the hope

  778. of the

  779. cross

  780. and the

  781. kingdom of

  782. Christ

  783. in view.

  784. We

  785. come

  786. because

  787. Christ

  788. called.

  789. Fourth,

  790. we are to

  791. come and

  792. take.

  793. again,

  794. let me

  795. read verses

  796. 28-30

  797. again.

  798. Come to

  799. me,

  800. all who

  801. labor and

  802. are heavy

  803. laden,

  804. and I

  805. will give

  806. you rest.

  807. Take

  808. my yoke

  809. upon you

  810. and learn

  811. from me,

  812. for I

  813. am gentle

  814. and lowly

  815. of heart,

  816. and you

  817. will find

  818. rest for

  819. your souls.

  820. For my

  821. yoke is

  822. easy and

  823. my burden

  824. is light.

  825. First,

  826. Jesus calls

  827. us to

  828. come.

  829. But what

  830. are we to

  831. do when

  832. we come?

  833. We are to

  834. take his

  835. yoke and

  836. learn from

  837. him.

  838. For those

  839. of you who

  840. don't know,

  841. a yoke is

  842. a tool used

  843. in farming

  844. to sync

  845. up two

  846. animals,

  847. whether donkeys

  848. or oxen

  849. or horses,

  850. to plow a

  851. field or

  852. even to

  853. move a

  854. wagon.

  855. And

  856. there is

  857. actually a

  858. law written

  859. in Deuteronomy

  860. 20-10

  861. that says

  862. that an

  863. oxen and

  864. a donkey

  865. should not

  866. be yoked

  867. together.

  868. Well,

  869. this law

  870. was put

  871. in place

  872. as practical

  873. wisdom

  874. because

  875. you don't

  876. want to

  877. have just

  878. one animal

  879. who's pulling

  880. the whole

  881. load,

  882. whereas the

  883. other one

  884. is not

  885. able to

  886. keep up.

  887. You know,

  888. we can

  889. kind of see

  890. this in

  891. three-legged

  892. races.

  893. You don't

  894. want to

  895. pair two

  896. people who

  897. are like

  898. one person

  899. being significantly

  900. stronger and

  901. taller and

  902. faster than

  903. the other,

  904. because if

  905. you do,

  906. it's going to

  907. actually slow

  908. them down

  909. and hinder

  910. them from

  911. being able

  912. to run,

  913. because they'll

  914. be slowed

  915. down by the

  916. shorter and

  917. slower and

  918. weaker person,

  919. and they'll be

  920. pulling along

  921. their partner

  922. the whole way.

  923. And so,

  924. similarly,

  925. when you're

  926. in yoking

  927. up an oxen,

  928. you want to

  929. have him

  930. yoked to

  931. another oxen

  932. so they can

  933. work together

  934. and plow

  935. together so

  936. that one is

  937. not more

  938. exhausted than

  939. the other.

  940. I bring

  941. this up

  942. because when

  943. I think

  944. about the

  945. call to

  946. take the

  947. yoke of

  948. Jesus,

  949. it's shocking

  950. that our

  951. God would

  952. ask us

  953. and call

  954. us to

  955. take his

  956. yoke,

  957. to share

  958. a yoke

  959. with Jesus.

  960. It's

  961. shocking that

  962. the creator

  963. would yoke

  964. himself to

  965. his creature.

  966. It doesn't

  967. even make

  968. sense.

  969. So when we

  970. come with

  971. our burdens,

  972. we come

  973. with our

  974. trials,

  975. we come

  976. with the

  977. things that

  978. are weighing

  979. us down,

  980. and we

  981. recognize we

  982. have nothing

  983. to offer

  984. him,

  985. and we

  986. take his

  987. yoke,

  988. it's actually

  989. a promise

  990. because he'll

  991. pull us

  992. along.

  993. We'll be

  994. the smaller

  995. and shorter

  996. and weaker

  997. person in

  998. that three-legged

  999. race.

  1000. He's just

  1001. going to

  1002. carry us

  1003. along the

  1004. whole way.

  1005. He has

  1006. also given

  1007. us his

  1008. spirit so

  1009. that we

  1010. may walk

  1011. according to

  1012. his ways

  1013. as well

  1014. in his

  1015. word.

  1016. All the

  1017. burdens that

  1018. I have

  1019. are his,

  1020. and all

  1021. that he

  1022. has is

  1023. mine.

  1024. He has

  1025. unveiled our

  1026. hearts so

  1027. we may

  1028. behold his

  1029. glory,

  1030. being

  1031. transformed in

  1032. the same

  1033. image as

  1034. him,

  1035. and so

  1036. that we

  1037. may be

  1038. transformed

  1039. into the

  1040. next degree

  1041. of glory

  1042. to another

  1043. through the

  1044. Lord who

  1045. is the

  1046. spirit.

  1047. We are

  1048. to look

  1049. to the

  1050. life of

  1051. Christ and

  1052. imitate him.

  1053. We are

  1054. not alone

  1055. in our

  1056. pursuit of

  1057. imitating

  1058. him as

  1059. well.

  1060. He has

  1061. given us

  1062. again his

  1063. spirit so

  1064. that he

  1065. may empower

  1066. us to do

  1067. this work.

  1068. So this

  1069. is different

  1070. than legalism

  1071. because it's

  1072. not based

  1073. on our

  1074. own merit

  1075. or our

  1076. own ability.

  1077. It's actually

  1078. God himself

  1079. who empowers

  1080. us.

  1081. God himself

  1082. who draws

  1083. us and

  1084. guides us

  1085. and gives

  1086. us life

  1087. and gives

  1088. us rest.

  1089. So finally,

  1090. we are to

  1091. take and

  1092. rest.

  1093. Again, I

  1094. titled this

  1095. message,

  1096. Rest for

  1097. Your Souls,

  1098. because as

  1099. I've been

  1100. studying through

  1101. this passage,

  1102. I saw that

  1103. rest is the

  1104. culmination

  1105. of this

  1106. whole passage.

  1107. We cannot

  1108. find rest

  1109. unless we

  1110. come to

  1111. our king.

  1112. We cannot

  1113. find rest

  1114. unless we

  1115. come as

  1116. children.

  1117. We cannot

  1118. find rest

  1119. if we don't

  1120. come with

  1121. our burdens.

  1122. We cannot

  1123. find rest

  1124. if we do

  1125. not take

  1126. his yoke

  1127. and learn

  1128. from him.

  1129. True rest

  1130. for your

  1131. souls

  1132. is resting

  1133. in the

  1134. presence

  1135. of God.

  1136. The idea

  1137. of rest

  1138. is not

  1139. just

  1140. equivalent

  1141. again to

  1142. getting a

  1143. little bit

  1144. of extra

  1145. sleep,

  1146. taking a

  1147. break from

  1148. work,

  1149. being able

  1150. to watch

  1151. your favorite

  1152. TV show,

  1153. watch a

  1154. movie.

  1155. True rest

  1156. is coming

  1157. to God,

  1158. enjoying

  1159. his presence,

  1160. inviting him

  1161. in to all

  1162. of your

  1163. life,

  1164. seeking his

  1165. help in

  1166. your need.

  1167. True rest

  1168. is rest

  1169. for your

  1170. soul.

  1171. It is a

  1172. peace that

  1173. surpasses

  1174. all

  1175. understanding,

  1176. the freedom

  1177. that we have

  1178. from sin

  1179. and death.

  1180. It is the

  1181. hope that we

  1182. have that

  1183. God is with

  1184. us and that

  1185. he will never

  1186. leave us

  1187. nor forsake

  1188. us.

  1189. It is the

  1190. assurance that

  1191. we have

  1192. nothing to

  1193. fear.

  1194. We have

  1195. nothing to

  1196. lose but

  1197. everything to

  1198. gain.

  1199. Jesus says,

  1200. Christ is

  1201. true rest

  1202. because he

  1203. is true

  1204. joy,

  1205. true

  1206. assurance,

  1207. true

  1208. fulfillment.

  1209. There is

  1210. no shame

  1211. when we

  1212. come to

  1213. him,

  1214. no guilt

  1215. because Jesus

  1216. has taken

  1217. that upon

  1218. himself on

  1219. the cross.

  1220. When we

  1221. encounter

  1222. various

  1223. troubles,

  1224. we can

  1225. come to

  1226. Jesus and

  1227. take his

  1228. yoke,

  1229. subjecting

  1230. ourselves to

  1231. him.

  1232. This is a

  1233. joyous

  1234. thing because

  1235. our God

  1236. has graciously

  1237. invited us to

  1238. take his

  1239. yoke,

  1240. to pull us

  1241. along,

  1242. to help us

  1243. on our

  1244. journey,

  1245. and through

  1246. faith may we

  1247. endure.

  1248. My

  1249. circumstances

  1250. again may

  1251. not change.

  1252. My

  1253. feelings may

  1254. not go

  1255. away.

  1256. The

  1257. thoughts I'm

  1258. wrestling with

  1259. may continue

  1260. to play

  1261. over and

  1262. over again,

  1263. but I

  1264. have an

  1265. enduring and

  1266. lasting

  1267. trust,

  1268. something that

  1269. will never

  1270. change,

  1271. and I

  1272. will never

  1273. fade.

  1274. But rest

  1275. for my

  1276. soul is

  1277. found in

  1278. the promise

  1279. of the

  1280. gospel.

  1281. that is

  1282. the

  1283. enduring

  1284. and

  1285. lasting

  1286. and

  1287. eternal

  1288. message.

  1289. Again,

  1290. we may

  1291. be burdened

  1292. by many

  1293. different

  1294. things.

  1295. It may

  1296. be personal

  1297. sin,

  1298. feelings of

  1299. hopelessness

  1300. and worthlessness,

  1301. or worry

  1302. or stress,

  1303. medical issues,

  1304. frustrations with

  1305. family and

  1306. friends,

  1307. financial

  1308. struggles,

  1309. doubt.

  1310. doubt.

  1311. But when we

  1312. look at what

  1313. Christ did on

  1314. the cross,

  1315. we can have

  1316. assurance.

  1317. We can rest

  1318. assured knowing

  1319. the length and

  1320. depth of his

  1321. love.

  1322. The fact that

  1323. the son was

  1324. willing to go

  1325. to such far

  1326. lengths in

  1327. order to save

  1328. us and offer

  1329. forgiveness to

  1330. us.

  1331. The yoke was

  1332. made possible

  1333. through the

  1334. cross and

  1335. resurrection.

  1336. What is

  1337. keeping us

  1338. from coming to

  1339. him with our

  1340. burdens?

  1341. Are we

  1342. satisfied with

  1343. our temporary

  1344. and hollow

  1345. solutions?

  1346. Just putting

  1347. off the

  1348. things that

  1349. are burdening

  1350. us?

  1351. Or are we

  1352. actually seeking

  1353. to find a

  1354. solution?

  1355. Because Christ

  1356. can meet our

  1357. needs.

  1358. He is the

  1359. solution to

  1360. all of our

  1361. needs.

  1362. God can

  1363. provide for

  1364. you if you

  1365. turn to

  1366. him and

  1367. come to

  1368. him.

  1369. And that

  1370. is when we

  1371. find a

  1372. lasting rest.

  1373. Paul even

  1374. admits in

  1375. 2 Corinthians

  1376. over and

  1377. over again.

  1378. He has

  1379. faced many

  1380. persecutions

  1381. and he

  1382. gets to

  1383. this point

  1384. of saying

  1385. that while

  1386. we're on

  1387. this earth

  1388. in the

  1389. bodies that

  1390. we have

  1391. right now

  1392. we groan.

  1393. But even

  1394. though we

  1395. groan we

  1396. are looking

  1397. forward to

  1398. the day

  1399. when there

  1400. would be

  1401. no more

  1402. tears

  1403. and no

  1404. more pain

  1405. and that

  1406. we'll be

  1407. with God

  1408. and see

  1409. him as

  1410. he is.

  1411. are you

  1412. willing to

  1413. surrender

  1414. your

  1415. circumstances

  1416. to the

  1417. Savior

  1418. and

  1419. commit

  1420. your

  1421. burdens

  1422. to

  1423. him?

  1424. Bring

  1425. your

  1426. burdens

  1427. and bear

  1428. his yoke

  1429. for he

  1430. is gentle

  1431. and lowly

  1432. of heart.

  1433. You will

  1434. find rest

  1435. for your

  1436. souls.

  1437. Thank you

  1438. all for

  1439. coming.

  1440. It's been a

  1441. pleasure of

  1442. being able to

  1443. preach God's

  1444. word and

  1445. just even

  1446. seeing all

  1447. the faces

  1448. who are here

  1449. this morning.

  1450. So again

  1451. thanks for

  1452. coming.

  1453. Let me

  1454. go ahead

  1455. and just

  1456. close this

  1457. in a

  1458. word of

  1459. prayer.

  1460. God

  1461. thank you

  1462. so much

  1463. for this

  1464. promise

  1465. that you

  1466. have given.

  1467. You will

  1468. provide us

  1469. rest.

  1470. Thank you

  1471. for your

  1472. son who

  1473. came to

  1474. live as

  1475. a human

  1476. to suffer

  1477. to be

  1478. mocked

  1479. and persecuted

  1480. and ultimately

  1481. to die on

  1482. the cross.

  1483. Thank you

  1484. for his

  1485. example of

  1486. humility

  1487. to us

  1488. and that

  1489. he is

  1490. our

  1491. God

  1492. and our

  1493. Savior.

  1494. And that

  1495. you have

  1496. bestowed

  1497. on him

  1498. the name

  1499. that is

  1500. above

  1501. every

  1502. other

  1503. name.

  1504. It's

  1505. that the

  1506. name of

  1507. Jesus

  1508. every knee

  1509. should bow

  1510. in heaven

  1511. and on

  1512. earth

  1513. and under

  1514. the earth

  1515. and every

  1516. tongue

  1517. confess that

  1518. Jesus Christ

  1519. is Lord

  1520. and the glory

  1521. of God

  1522. the Father.

  1523. May we live

  1524. in light of

  1525. these truths

  1526. this week.

  1527. Help us to

  1528. come to you

  1529. with the

  1530. various things

  1531. we encounter

  1532. this week

  1533. and just

  1534. give us a

  1535. heart

  1536. of humility

  1537. to come

  1538. before you

  1539. and to

  1540. seek your

  1541. help in

  1542. our time

  1543. of need.

  1544. In your

  1545. name I

  1546. pray.

  1547. Amen.

  1548. Amen.

  1549. Amen.
