  1. Well, happy Father's Day. It's good to see all of you this morning.

  2. And I just want to begin by just saying thank you to all of you for your prayers

  3. ! And for your interest in our family and interest in me particularly as I had surgery and recovery

  4. and all of that, I can tell you that you have been an encouragement. I have been blessed

  5. because of being part of Maranatha and I'm grateful for every one of you. Thank you for

  6. the way that you have prayed for us, encouraged us, blessed us, not just me but my family.

  7. And so it's great to be back with you this morning. The other joy of what we got to experience

  8. the last six weeks is the ministry of the Word by capable men who brought the Word to us

  9. and helped to emphasize the power of the Word over a particular speaker. And that, of course,

  10. is a blessing too. So I'm grateful to be at Maranatha where we have so many gifted men who

  11. can preach the Word and encourage us in the Scriptures every week. I want you to know that

  12. that is unique. That is special about this church and I'm grateful for all of the investment that's

  13. happened through the years and the way that God has drawn certain individuals to our fellowship

  14. and the way that they are able to apply the Scriptures to our hearts. What a blessing it is to be here.

  15. So it is Father's Day and it just reminded me this past week during the soccer camp that moms and dads

  16. are different. Even in how they drop off their kids. It was very interesting to me.

  17. You know, the moms tended, and by the way, I'm generalizing here. Not every mom or every dad was

  18. this way. But moms tended actually to park a ways away. And I think partly because they didn't want

  19. to hit any kids as they were driving up closer. It was easier for them to walk. But it also gave them

  20. space. So the kids could pile out of the cars. They could spray them down with the bug spray.

  21. They could tie their shoes. They could make sure their shorts were straight. Their jersey was on.

  22. Their hair was put up. And they had the sunscreen on. And when everyone was ready and the hugs were

  23. given, they could finally make their way up to the sign-in station. Now dads, efficiency is a little bit

  24. more important to us. Okay? So we tend, as dads, we kind of park up close. And the kids hop out of the car.

  25. And we make our way directly to the registration. And when it's finished, we turn around and we go back.

  26. Mission complete. Job done. And what was even kind of interesting, sometimes a mom and a dad of the

  27. same family would drop off their kids. And it was, you know, kind of the alternate days.

  28. The dad left the other kids in the car because it just wasn't efficient to get them out of their seat

  29. and to take them with. But mom made sure to bring the kids when she dropped off. It was just,

  30. it was fascinating to me the way that God has made moms and dads different. And by the way,

  31. that's by design. Praise the Lord for moms and dads. Praise the Lord for God's design for families.

  32. And that's another joy of being here at Maranatha is the joy of seeing strong, healthy, godly families,

  33. moms and dads that are modeling Christ for their kids. And what a blessing that is.

  34. Well, this morning, I want to just draw your attention. We're back in the book of Job. And if

  35. you're using the Pew Bible, I would encourage you to turn with us there. If you're using the Pew Bible,

  36. I believe it's on page 417. We're going to pick it up in chapter 2 today. There's so much to say

  37. about moms and dads, but I want to draw attention to fathers because dads, you have a unique

  38. responsibility. A unique responsibility of modeling God to your family, of representing God to your family.

  39. It is not a mistake that you're called a father and that God is father. That is by design.

  40. And you have a unique and special role. A great burden of responsibility in your life to reflect God

  41. appropriately, accurately, and faithfully. Now, of course, we're not going to do that perfectly, right?

  42. We make mistakes, but hopefully in humility, we fess up to those mistakes. We call attention to them.

  43. And there's humility that goes along with it. But what a unique responsibility that we have as dads to represent

  44. God, the father, to our families. But it doesn't end there. It's interesting that we also represent God

  45. in Christ to show Christ's love to the church. And husbands, your responsibility to show Christ to your wife

  46. in the same way. You show the father, you show the son, of course, through the power of the spirit

  47. who is helping to fashion those fruits of the spirit in your life and empowering you to do

  48. what only God can accomplish in your life. And so we come to Job, okay? And what struck me

  49. this past week in my study of the book of Job is that the commendation we're going to see in chapter 2,

  50. chapter 2, verse 3. Just look at there briefly with me. God is calling out Job, and this is what he says.

  51. Have you considered my servant Job? There is none like him on the earth. None like him on the earth.

  52. And then he kind of fills that out. A blameless man, upright, fears God, turns away from evil. And by the way,

  53. that includes Job's fathering and includes Job's husbanding. Job was an exemplary man in every way.

  54. He was a dad who loved his kids. You see that show up in his family. And I promise you that with this

  55. kind of commendation, he was also the kind of husband that loved and cared for, nurtured, supported,

  56. and led his wife. He did that faithfully. So that's going to be important for us as we make our way

  57. through this study this morning. And I want to draw attention, not so much to Job himself, but I want

  58. you to understand, and you already know this. I'm just reminding you of what you already know. When we

  59. look at Job this morning, we're looking at God's work in the life of Job, okay? So when we draw

  60. attention to his character, it's because of God's work in Job that we see these things. But as dads,

  61. as husbands, as men, whether you're married or single, young or old, I believe God has called us to this

  62. kind of life. This is the kind of life that God takes notice of. And so this is the kind of life

  63. that every man and every woman should aspire to, okay? That's just kind of what I want to encourage

  64. us with as we start this study, okay? We're going to look at, first of all, Job, who was a man of

  65. integrity. Job, a man of integrity. It's another word for blamelessness. We see that in the first

  66. several verses. Chapter 2, join me with, there with me at verses 1 to 6. It says this,

  67. Again, there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord.

  68. And Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. The Lord said to Satan,

  69. From wherever you come? Satan answered the Lord and said, From going to and fro on the earth and

  70. from walking up and down on it. And the Lord said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job?

  71. There is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from

  72. evil. He still holds fast his integrity. Although you incited me against him to destroy him without

  73. reason. Then Satan answered the Lord and said, Skin for skin, all that a man has he will give for his

  74. life. But stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh and he will curse you to your face.

  75. And the Lord said to Satan, Behold, he is in your hand only. Spare his life. A man of integrity. And we're

  76. going to see here at the very beginning God's commendation of Job's life, his character, his

  77. integrity. That God himself will highlight and feature the integrity of Job. We find this formula

  78. here even at the beginning of this chapter. Again, there was a day. And it reminds us of kind of what

  79. we've seen up to this point, right? This transition between a man and a day that we've seen here

  80. since chapter 1. It begins in chapter 1 verse 1, there was a man. And then in verse 6, that there

  81. was a day. And then we're going to find again here in chapter 2 verse 1, there again, there was a day.

  82. This transition that's taking place. And right at the outset, and now we've seen this for the third time,

  83. that the writer to, of this book of Job, wants us to understand something about his integrity.

  84. If you go back to chapter 1, beginning there in verse 1, there was a man in the land of Uz,

  85. whose name was Job. And that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away

  86. from evil. We don't even get to the story. We don't even know what's going to happen. But the author

  87. wants us to know something about Job's integrity, his character. I appreciated what Pastor Paul

  88. Boothby said last week in kind of alliterating this for us. He talked about Job's faith. He was

  89. blameless. He was upright. He feared God. He turned away from evil. It spoke of the faith that he had.

  90. We learned about his family. He's got seven sons and three daughters. For anyone living at that time,

  91. that was a mark of a blessed life. Someone who had enjoyed the benefits of God's goodness to them.

  92. We saw his fortune. 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen and donkeys. And then in today's estimate,

  93. as we found out last week, somewhere between $50 million and $200 million, this guy had it all.

  94. We learned about his fame, that he was the greatest man in the East. We learned about his friends. We'll

  95. learn about them more today. And as we move our way through this study, the friends of Job, particularly

  96. Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. But we come to this new day. And what I love about the book of Job is like

  97. no other book that you will find in the scripture, there's this uniqueness about God kind of pulling

  98. the curtain back and giving you a peek into the heaven's court and seeing what's happening there.

  99. Like, wow, that's really happening, that Satan is standing before God and there's accountability.

  100. That's how this is explained and this is how it works out. Of course, it reminds us of what Paul

  101. says to the church of Ephesus in Ephesians 6, 12, when he says, we do not wrestle against flesh and blood,

  102. but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness,

  103. against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. And while the conflicts that you have may

  104. seem very physical, God wants us to understand there is a supernatural force behind them.

  105. And here in chapter 2, we find another day, another day of accounting. And the repetition here,

  106. it's fascinating that the description and the words that are used in chapter 2 are almost identical to

  107. the Hebrew phrases that we find in chapter 1. And you're like, why bother going through all the same

  108. stuff? And of course, no word is wasted in the scriptures. So it's here for a reason. And I believe

  109. the reason that it's here is to help us understand, emphasize once again, God is in control. God's

  110. authority is on display. That the supernatural powers and in the future, all of human powers are subject to

  111. his divine authority. And just to help you know that this isn't just a one-time thing taking place in

  112. chapter 1. It's repeated for us in chapter 2 to assure our hearts and encourage us, God is in control.

  113. You can trust him. God is ultimate in authority. He's over his creation. So we can rest in the fact

  114. that God's supreme, that nothing happens in this life. And as we continue to work our way through

  115. this passage, nothing happens in this life that he doesn't know about. And he hasn't at least given

  116. permission to take place. God says to Satan, have you considered? Have you considered? Literally, this is,

  117. have you set your heart on him? Have you made him the focus of your attention? Have you looked at his

  118. life? Have you zeroed your focus, narrowed your focus? Have you understood that there's something

  119. unique about his life? And of course, Satan had taken notice. And God draws attention to him as being a

  120. blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil. And the commendation, there is none

  121. like him on the earth. Wow! Can you even imagine that? I can think very easily, even in this

  122. fellowship, the number of people that are more godly and more mature spiritually than I am. And yet, Job

  123. himself, God draws attention to everybody on the earth. Nobody like this guy. Nobody. Not one person.

  124. He calls attention to his blamelessness, which speaks of his standing before the Lord.

  125. God. And blamelessness, of course, isn't perfection. But blamelessness is sincerity. It's authenticity.

  126. It's that Job was the same person on the inside as he was on the outside. What you saw in Job is what

  127. you got. And there was purity about him. There was this integrity about his life. Authenticity.

  128. You knew what to expect. You knew the kind of person he was. He wasn't two-faced. He wasn't something

  129. over here and something different over there. The posture of his standing before the Lord.

  130. But not only that, but also he was upright, which speaks of his standing before men.

  131. Shifts its focus a little bit so that we understand there wasn't just a vertical relationship with God

  132. that was in line, but it transcended to this horizontal relationship with others that was also

  133. in line. That Job treated others with respect and kindness and also with the kind of compassion

  134. and tenderness that you would expect. He dealt with them fairly, but he feared God.

  135. And the reverence that is expressed here is his posture towards God himself.

  136. Turning to him. Respecting him. And you get the sense of this real presence that Job was aware

  137. of God's presence to such a degree that he couldn't even imagine himself doing the wrong thing

  138. because he knew God was there and he feared how God would respond.

  139. So he feared God. He worshipped God. He was devoted to God. But he also turned away from evil.

  140. And that was kind of the response, the other reaction. So he's turning to God. Turning away from evil.

  141. And he's holding fast. He's holding fast when things are really, really hard.

  142. And we got a sense of how hard things were in the first chapter.

  143. Wave upon wave upon wave of tragedy that crashes down on his life.

  144. He hears one word of tragedy and losing the things that God has blessed him with.

  145. And before he can catch his breath, before he can get his bearings,

  146. it crashes down again with another wave upon his life.

  147. Losing his sheep.

  148. Silence that followed instead of an interruption.

  149. And that was by design as well.

  150. The trouble and difficulty and confusion of this scenario must have been challenging for Job

  151. because whether it was coming from a human standpoint

  152. or whether it was coming from a divine standpoint,

  153. like this fire of God that came down on his sheep,

  154. consumed them, there was nothing left.

  155. And then the wind that comes and hits the four corners of the house.

  156. And by the way, those of you who know wind, wind doesn't do that.

  157. Wind strikes a side of the house, not the corners, and all the way around.

  158. This was by design meant to showcase or at least confuse Job, deceive him into thinking,

  159. this is from God.

  160. God's responsible.

  161. And so since God is responsible,

  162. you must have done something to show that God is now against you.

  163. So God's commendation.

  164. And then we move to Satan's accusation in verses 4 and 5.

  165. Satan answered the Lord and said, skin for skin.

  166. All that a man has, he will give for his life.

  167. But stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh,

  168. and he will curse you to your face.

  169. We've heard that before.

  170. Satan demands that God removes now all the boundaries.

  171. He's demanded that God remove boundaries in chapter 1.

  172. And God has graciously removed some of those boundaries.

  173. But this is the one boundary that was left.

  174. We see that in chapter 1, verse 12.

  175. It says,

  176. So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

  177. And so now Satan demands that this last boundary,

  178. this last obstacle, this last barrier is removed

  179. so he can have all of Job for himself.

  180. Satan's accusation to God is,

  181. you are still holding out.

  182. You are still holding back.

  183. You are still buying him off.

  184. This is all of your fault.

  185. You're just trying to insulate him from the inevitable.

  186. You take this away,

  187. and he's going to curse you to your face.

  188. But you know that,

  189. so you're not going to remove that barrier.

  190. And so in his manipulating, accusatory tactics,

  191. Satan is actually accusing God of wrong.

  192. God, you're not pure.

  193. You're not righteous.

  194. And you remove this edge,

  195. it'll be all over.

  196. Satan's accusation.

  197. He is now pulling out all the stops.

  198. He unloads his entire arsenal against him.

  199. And by the way,

  200. don't be misled to think

  201. that what we're going to see here

  202. is just a physical trauma on Job's life.

  203. It is total.

  204. It's comprehensive.

  205. Yes, it is physical.

  206. But there is emotional trauma.

  207. There is spiritual trauma.

  208. There is psychological trauma.

  209. There is relational trauma.

  210. He's going to experience it all

  211. because let me tell you,

  212. God giving permission to Satan

  213. to do whatever he wants,

  214. just don't take his life,

  215. that's the only boundary.

  216. You can better believe

  217. Satan is going to do everything

  218. that's in his power.

  219. I am going to bring him down.

  220. Just you watch.

  221. That was Satan's accusation.

  222. And so he says,

  223. skin for skin.

  224. Let me touch his body.

  225. And then we'll see how much he loves you.

  226. Yeah.

  227. And those of you who know

  228. a little bit about

  229. having a skin disease

  230. or know somebody with a skin disease,

  231. even for just a little bit,

  232. you know that the things that happen

  233. outside of you,

  234. however difficult they might be,

  235. those things that are loss of family,

  236. loss of job,

  237. loss of income,

  238. all those things,

  239. they're hard.

  240. They're devastating,

  241. but they can be covered up.

  242. You can find an escape

  243. for those things,

  244. but when it is your life,

  245. when it is your body,

  246. there is no relief.

  247. And then it becomes very personal

  248. and very hard.

  249. This is what we're talking about.

  250. And so Satan is interested

  251. in bringing Job down.

  252. And so he will do whatever it takes.

  253. He's going to say,

  254. let him suffer in this way

  255. and he will curse you to your face.

  256. And by the way,

  257. this is an interesting word in the Hebrew

  258. and I want to spend a whole lot of time here,

  259. but the word curse is the word barak,

  260. which is also the word for bless.

  261. We have now seen this for the fifth time

  262. in this passage, okay?

  263. So bless and curse,

  264. they're used interchangeably already

  265. throughout the first chapter.

  266. Let me just give you a couple examples.

  267. Job 1, 5, okay?

  268. The very end of the verse,

  269. it says,

  270. it may be that my children have sinned

  271. and cursed God in their hearts.

  272. That's the word barak.

  273. That's also the word bless.

  274. And then in verse 10 of chapter 1,

  275. it says,

  276. you have blessed the work of his hands

  277. and his possessions have increased in the land.

  278. And then in verse 11,

  279. Satan will use the same word barak,

  280. only he'll use it in the word,

  281. in the sense of to curse.

  282. He says this,

  283. stretch out your hand and touch all that he has,

  284. he will curse you to your face.

  285. And then in Job chapter 1, verse 21,

    Job 1:21

  286. it says,

  287. naked I came from my mother's womb,

  288. naked I'll return,

  289. the Lord gives,

  290. the Lord takes away,

  291. blessed be the name of the Lord.

  292. That's the same word.

  293. What is going on here?

  294. I think it's a great reminder for us

  295. of how easy it is for us to teeter

  296. between blessing and cursing.

  297. We know that.

  298. James,

  299. the half-brother of Jesus,

  300. draws attention to that

  301. when he talks about the dangers of the tongue.

  302. He says,

  303. you know,

  304. with the mouth we curse and we bless.

  305. How is it possible

  306. for sweet water and bitter water

  307. to come out of the same place?

  308. Why do you allow your tongue

  309. to be the source of blessing and cursing?

  310. It shouldn't be.

  311. But that is our nature, is it not?

  312. We teeter between the two.

  313. But dads,

  314. you lead with your mouth.

  315. I want you to realize,

  316. you lead with your mouth.

  317. You lead with the things you say.

  318. You lead with the words

  319. that either bless or curse.

  320. You lead with the words

  321. that are either affirming and encouraging

  322. or critical and condemning.

  323. You lead with the words

  324. that are words of faith,

  325. that we believe in God,

  326. that he is good,

  327. we can trust him.

  328. Or you say,

  329. oh man,

  330. I don't know what we're going to do.

  331. The bottom has fallen out.

  332. My life is a mess.

  333. What will you do with your words

  334. to lead your families?

  335. It's so important.

  336. The balance beam is so critical.

  337. The toggling between blessing and cursing

  338. is so delicate in our lives

  339. and so important nonetheless.

  340. And Jesus will draw attention to that

  341. as he's talking to his audiences.

  342. He says to the Pharisees,

  343. for out of the abundance of the heart,

  344. the mouth speaks.

  345. Out of the abundance of the heart,

  346. the mouth speaks.

  347. I know and people can know who you are

  348. by the consistent pattern of the words

  349. that come out of your mouth,

  350. especially your family.

  351. Lead with words.

  352. And it will echo the heart

  353. of one who loves God,

  354. I trust.

  355. And that's why the psalmist says this

  356. in Psalm 19, 14.

  357. He says,

  358. let the words of my mouth

  359. in the meditation of my heart

  360. be acceptable in your sight,

  361. O God,

  362. my strength and my redeemer.

  363. Let the consistency,

  364. integrity,

  365. blamelessness of my heart,

  366. may it show up in how I live

  367. and how I speak.

  368. May there be consistency

  369. between the two.

  370. So that people know

  371. I'm a person of integrity.

  372. How will God respond now?

  373. The accusation has flown.

  374. Will you say,

  375. no, Satan, I'm sorry.

  376. You've had your chance.

  377. Or, no, Satan,

  378. he belongs to me.

  379. He's suffered enough.

  380. Let him go.

  381. No, actually,

  382. God grants permission.

  383. And by the way,

  384. God may grant permission

  385. to the enemy

  386. to allow you to suffer.

  387. God grants permission.

  388. We see that in verse 6.

  389. The Lord said to Satan,

  390. behold,

  391. he is in your hand.

  392. Only spare his life.

  393. Only spare his life.

  394. Last week,

  395. Pastor Paul made a clear distinction

  396. that's worth repeating.

  397. He helped us to be reminded

  398. of the fact

  399. that Satan,

  400. while he may have power,

  401. he is not all-powerful.

  402. Remember that?

  403. And Satan,

  404. while he may know some things,

  405. he is not all-knowing

  406. like our God is.

  407. And Satan,

  408. while he is present,

  409. he is not omnipresent

  410. or all-present.

  411. He's limited.

  412. And Satan,

  413. while he has

  414. some measure of power

  415. that he can exercise

  416. in this world

  417. and in this life,

  418. it is all under

  419. the accountability

  420. of God himself.

  421. He answers to God.

  422. God grants permission.

  423. The Lord said,

  424. behold,

  425. he is in your hand.

  426. only spare his life.

  427. And we see

  428. that God not only

  429. grants permission,

  430. but it helps to provide

  431. maybe some answers

  432. for verse 3,

  433. the last part of verse 3,

  434. which may seem

  435. a bit confusing to us.

  436. It says this,

  437. although God says to Satan,

  438. you incited me against him

  439. to destroy him

  440. without reason.

  441. What?

  442. What does that mean?

  443. You incited me?

  444. And I think the challenge

  445. is that in our English vocabulary,

  446. incite kind of has

  447. the idea of force.

  448. You forced me into this.

  449. You backed me into a corner.

  450. You have manipulated me

  451. into doing this.

  452. You've influenced me

  453. and I could not push back.

  454. But that's not the concept

  455. that we're talking about here.

  456. It is a concept

  457. of accountability.

  458. And God

  459. is ultimately

  460. and supremely

  461. in authority

  462. over every circumstance.

  463. Although he may not be

  464. the instrument

  465. for pain,

  466. the instrument for sin,

  467. he is

  468. ultimately accountable.

  469. And that raises,

  470. too,

  471. really encouraging things

  472. I want to just draw

  473. to your attention

  474. before we move on.

  475. And that is this.

  476. Every trouble you face

  477. is under the watchful eye

  478. of God.

  479. Every trouble you face

  480. is under the watchful eye

  481. of God.

  482. You will not experience

  483. anything in this life

  484. or the next,

  485. by the way,

  486. that God hasn't sanctioned

  487. or permitted.

  488. Satan does not have

  489. unlimited,

  490. free access

  491. to you.

  492. It is all under

  493. the authority of God.

  494. Under his watchful eye.

  495. He knows.

  496. He loves.

  497. It's his design.

  498. He is able

  499. to help.

  500. Second,

  501. every trouble

  502. you face

  503. has a way

  504. to enjoy

  505. and experience

  506. the strengthening power

  507. of God

  508. to endure.

  509. every trouble

  510. you face,

  511. for lack of a better way

  512. to put it,

  513. is endurable.

  514. Okay?

  515. 1 Corinthians 10.13

  516. says this.

  517. No temptation

  518. has overtaken you

  519. that is common to man.

  520. God is faithful.

  521. Can you say that with me?

  522. God is faithful.

  523. He will not let you

  524. to be tempted

  525. beyond your ability,

  526. but with the temptation

  527. he will also provide

  528. the way of escape

  529. that you may be able

  530. to endure it.

  531. Dads,

  532. men,

  533. young and old,

  534. no pressure

  535. that you face

  536. is a pressure

  537. that you cannot endure

  538. with the help

  539. and strength

  540. of God.

  541. You can do it

  542. with God's help.

  543. But,

  544. here's the thing.

  545. Is God,

  546. oh,

  547. he allows

  548. the pressure

  549. to come

  550. so that we

  551. as men

  552. can finally say,

  553. okay,

  554. uncle,

  555. we need help.

  556. We let go.

  557. We need you

  558. to help carry us,

  559. Lord.

  560. He will apply

  561. that pressure

  562. until we get

  563. to that point.

  564. So get to that point

  565. sooner than later,

  566. okay?

  567. But every trouble

  568. you face

  569. is endurable

  570. because God

  571. will carry you

  572. if you trust him.

  573. God still allows

  574. this attack

  575. and God,

  576. this is the other

  577. amazing part

  578. about this book,

  579. God already knows

  580. the outcome,

  581. okay?

  582. So God permits

  583. Satan

  584. to attack

  585. in every way

  586. imaginable

  587. and the challenge

  588. is

  589. he is going

  590. to curse you

  591. to your face,

  592. he's not going

  593. to remain true,

  594. he's going

  595. to fail,

  596. he's going

  597. to be destroyed,

  598. I'm bringing him

  599. down,

  600. he's going

  601. to curse you

  602. but God's like,

  603. no,

  604. he's not

  605. because I'm

  606. going to carry him

  607. and you can't

  608. touch this.

  609. You can't come

  610. against this power,

  611. I'm in control.

  612. So every,

  613. every suffering

  614. you face

  615. is endurable

  616. because of the

  617. power of God.

  618. Alright,

  619. that was

  620. Job,

  621. a man of integrity,

  622. now we have

  623. a couple minutes

  624. to talk about

  625. Job,

  626. a man of endurance,

  627. a man of endurance.

  628. Verses 7

  629. to 13,

  630. so Satan

  631. went out

  632. from the presence

  633. of the Lord

  634. and struck

  635. Job with

  636. loathsome sores

  637. from the sole

  638. of his foot

  639. to the crown

  640. of his head.

  641. Okay,

  642. sole of his foot

  643. to the crown

  644. of his head.

  645. Totality

  646. of this physical

  647. suffering now

  648. that he's going

  649. to experience.

  650. And he took,

  651. speaking of Job

  652. now,

  653. a piece of

  654. broken pottery

  655. with which to

  656. scrape himself

  657. while he sat

  658. in the ashes.

  659. Job,

  660. a man of endurance,

  661. that's what we see.

  662. And this,

  663. a sudden attack

  664. from the enemy.

  665. First,

  666. a sudden attack

  667. from the enemy.

  668. Almost simultaneously

  669. with getting permission,

  670. now Job is afflicted.

  671. This instantaneous

  672. affliction

  673. that pops out

  674. all over Job's body

  675. and it is horrendous.

  676. It is awful.

  677. It's horrific.

  678. It's described

  679. throughout this book.

  680. We see that,

  681. especially in Job

    Job 7 chapter mention

  682. chapter 7.

  683. We see the restless

  684. nights that Job

  685. endured.

  686. He says,

  687. when I lie down,

  688. I say,

  689. when shall I arise?

  690. But the night

  691. is so long

  692. and I'm full of

  693. tossing until the dawn.

  694. In verse 5

  695. of chapter 7,

  696. it talks about

  697. his skin.

  698. My flesh

  699. is clothed

  700. with worms

  701. and dirt.

  702. Imagine.

  703. Clothed

  704. with worms

  705. and dirt.

  706. My skin

  707. hardens,

  708. then breaks

  709. out afresh.

  710. Job 7,

  711. 14.

  712. You scare me

  713. with dreams

  714. and terrify me

  715. with visions.

  716. In chapter 7,

  717. verse 15.

  718. I would choose

  719. strangling in death

  720. rather than my bones.

  721. In chapter 16,

  722. verse 8,

  723. he says,

  724. he has shriveled me up,

  725. which is a witness

  726. against me

  727. and my leanness

  728. has risen up

  729. against me.

  730. It testifies

  731. to my face.

  732. In chapter 30,

  733. verse 30,

  734. he says,

  735. my skin

  736. turns black

  737. and falls

  738. from me

  739. and my bones

  740. burn

  741. with heat.

  742. Commentators

  743. have surmised

  744. what kind

  745. of illness

  746. or disease

  747. that Job had

  748. and I think

  749. that's probably

  750. a wasted effort

  751. and the reason

  752. why is because

  753. this was a

  754. Satan-infused

  755. disease.

  756. Nobody

  757. on the face

  758. of the earth

  759. has ever

  760. experienced

  761. this kind

  762. of torment,

  763. at least in

  764. this physical way.

  765. Job did

  766. because God

  767. gave him

  768. permission.

  769. By the way,

  770. I'm not talking

  771. about Jesus.

  772. Of course,

  773. Jesus endured

  774. suffering,

  775. but I'm talking

  776. about the kind

  777. of physical

  778. torment

  779. to his body

  780. in this way

  781. and this was

  782. a Satan-infused

  783. disease,

  784. the worst

  785. of the worst,

  786. as bad as

  787. Satan could

  788. throw at Job

  789. and how given

  790. permission,

  791. you can better

  792. believe that

  793. Job is going

  794. to be doing

  795. everything short

  796. of Job's

  797. life being

  798. taken away

  799. because that

  800. was the one

  801. boundary.

  802. So everything

  803. up to that

  804. point is

  805. what God

  806. has allowed

  807. Satan to

  808. do.

  809. This was not

  810. a localized

  811. problem.

  812. It was from

  813. the sole of

  814. his foot to

  815. the crown of

  816. his head.

  817. There was no

  818. place that Job

  819. could find that

  820. was comfortable.

  821. His dreams,

  822. his sleep,

  823. were haunted.

  824. He couldn't

  825. even find relief

  826. in the night

  827. where most of us

  828. say, well,

  829. at least I can

  830. go to bed

  831. and then

  832. worry about

  833. this tomorrow.

  834. No, not

  835. Job because

  836. Job is going

  837. to experience

  838. this kind

  839. of pain

  840. relentlessly

  841. enduring

  842. all the time.

  843. There is

  844. no relief.

  845. By the way,

  846. no antibiotics,

  847. no pain

  848. relievers,

  849. no special

  850. ointments,

  851. no one to

  852. give attention

  853. to his wounds,

  854. no surgeons

  855. to remove

  856. the dead skin,

  857. no specialized

  858. dressing,

  859. no anti-

  860. inflammatory

  861. drugs,

  862. no nerve

  863. blockers.

  864. He is

  865. experiencing

  866. the breadth

  867. and the depth

  868. of this

  869. with no

  870. relief

  871. and no

  872. end in sight.

  873. And what

  874. makes this

  875. the worst

  876. is that

  877. Job will

  878. think

  879. and his

  880. friends will

  881. say,

  882. God is

  883. against you.

  884. That was

  885. the hardest

  886. thing.

  887. But Job

  888. continues to

  889. maintain his

  890. integrity.

  891. Children

  892. or not,

  893. friends or

  894. not,

  895. regardless of

  896. pain and

  897. loss and

  898. confusion and

  899. by the way,

  900. the silence

  901. of God,

  902. Job remains

  903. true.

  904. He

  905. endures.

  906. His heart

  907. remains

  908. loyal to

  909. God.

  910. God.

  911. Next,

  912. a moment

  913. of weakness.

  914. I want

  915. to deal

  916. with this

  917. quickly,

  918. but I

  919. don't want

  920. to run

  921. through this

  922. and you're

  923. going to

  924. have to

  925. bear with

  926. me

  927. because

  928. what I'm

  929. about to

  930. share with

  931. you is

  932. probably not

  933. agreed on by

  934. most commentators.

  935. Okay?

  936. So,

  937. you can just

  938. take it for

  939. what's worth,

  940. check out for a

  941. couple of

  942. minutes,

  943. then check back

  944. in when we

  945. finish our

  946. last point.

  947. But here we

  948. go.

  949. Verse 9,

  950. it says this,

  951. then his wife

  952. said to him,

  953. do you still

  954. hold fast

  955. your integrity?

  956. Curse God

  957. and die.

  958. But he said

  959. to her,

  960. you speak

  961. as one of the

  962. foolish women

  963. would speak.

  964. Shall we

  965. receive good

  966. from God

  967. and shall we

  968. not receive

  969. evil?

  970. In all this,

  971. Job did not

  972. sin with his

  973. lips.

  974. And by the way,

  975. as we've just

  976. learned,

  977. he didn't sin

  978. with his lips

  979. and he hasn't

  980. sinned with his

  981. heart because

  982. the lips are an

  983. expression of

  984. what's going on

  985. inside.

  986. Okay?

  987. But I want

  988. to just,

  989. I want to

  990. pause for a

  991. moment and

  992. talk about

  993. Job's wife.

  994. Okay?

  995. And I want

  996. to talk about

  997. a moment of

  998. weakness.

  999. I believe this

  1000. is a response

  1001. of weakness.

  1002. I believe,

  1003. it's my

  1004. personal conviction

  1005. that she is

  1006. responding in

  1007. pity to her

  1008. suffering husband.

  1009. Job's wife

  1010. is here,

  1011. by the way,

  1012. to show us

  1013. what every

  1014. single one

  1015. of us would

  1016. do.

  1017. Every one

  1018. of us would

  1019. do in the

  1020. same situation

  1021. because remember,

  1022. remember what

  1023. God says of

  1024. Job,

  1025. there is no

  1026. one like him

  1027. on the earth.

  1028. I think Job's

  1029. wife was runner

  1030. up,

  1031. by the way.

  1032. That's my

  1033. personal opinion.

  1034. But she got

  1035. to the breaking

  1036. point.

  1037. She couldn't

  1038. bear it

  1039. anymore.

  1040. Now,

  1041. why do I

  1042. say that?

  1043. Well,

  1044. I say that

  1045. for a couple

  1046. of reasons.

  1047. First,

  1048. I say that

  1049. because of

  1050. what I know

  1051. about God's

  1052. commendation of

  1053. Job and what

  1054. I see in his

  1055. family.

  1056. This was an

  1057. epic family.

  1058. This was an

  1059. ideal family.

  1060. You read

  1061. through this,

  1062. you're like,

  1063. man,

  1064. how did they

  1065. do it?

  1066. And by the

  1067. way,

  1068. you realize

  1069. these things

  1070. don't happen

  1071. by themselves.

  1072. Older brothers

  1073. caring for

  1074. younger sisters

  1075. in that

  1076. culture.

  1077. The closeness,

  1078. the unity,

  1079. the oneness,

  1080. they're almost

  1081. finding excuses

  1082. to get together.

  1083. The spiritual

  1084. following after

  1085. their dad

  1086. who does

  1087. sacrifices for

  1088. them.

  1089. And knowing

  1090. that Job

  1091. is a godly

  1092. man means

  1093. that he's a

  1094. godly father,

  1095. but he's also

  1096. a godly

  1097. husband.

  1098. And I

  1099. believe that

  1100. requires that

  1101. he's leading

  1102. his wife.

  1103. And she's

  1104. responding.

  1105. Especially since,

  1106. by the way,

  1107. we've heard

  1108. this statement

  1109. behind every

  1110. great man

  1111. is a great

  1112. woman.

  1113. I've heard

  1114. that before.

  1115. That's not

  1116. just a good

  1117. phrase.

  1118. That's something

  1119. we find in

  1120. the scripture.

  1121. Proverbs 31

  1122. woman,

  1123. you see the

  1124. results of her

  1125. husband and

  1126. the way he's

  1127. lifted up in

  1128. the gates and

  1129. the way that

  1130. he's revered

  1131. and respected.

  1132. Well,

  1133. that's because

  1134. his wife is

  1135. like killing

  1136. it everywhere.

  1137. And women

  1138. in that day

  1139. were responsible

  1140. for the home.

  1141. It was their

  1142. domain.

  1143. It wasn't

  1144. that the dads

  1145. never had anything

  1146. to do with it,

  1147. but let me

  1148. tell you,

  1149. you see these

  1150. things in

  1151. the family,

  1152. you better

  1153. believe they

  1154. were true

  1155. about Job's

  1156. wife.

  1157. That's my

  1158. perspective.

  1159. Not to mention

  1160. the fact,

  1161. notice how Job

  1162. corrects her.

  1163. Notice in

  1164. verse 10,

  1165. he says,

  1166. you speak as

  1167. one of the

  1168. foolish women

  1169. speak.

  1170. What did he

  1171. not say?

  1172. You are a

  1173. foolish woman.

  1174. foolish woman.

  1175. He doesn't

  1176. say that.

  1177. He says,

  1178. you're speaking

  1179. like the

  1180. foolish woman.

  1181. This isn't

  1182. you.

  1183. You know

  1184. better.

  1185. What are you

  1186. doing?

  1187. Well,

  1188. she had a

  1189. moment of

  1190. weakness.

  1191. She succumbed

  1192. to a Satan

  1193. inspired message.

  1194. And I say

  1195. Satan inspired

  1196. because the

  1197. word of God

  1198. to Satan

  1199. was,

  1200. have you

  1201. noticed he

  1202. hangs on to

  1203. his integrity?

  1204. And then the

  1205. words that are

  1206. repeated back.

  1207. Why do you

  1208. hold on to

  1209. your integrity?

  1210. And then

  1211. Satan's

  1212. accusation,

  1213. well,

  1214. he will curse

  1215. you to your

  1216. face and

  1217. then Job's

  1218. wife curse

  1219. God and die.

  1220. Can we

  1221. appreciate that

  1222. she experienced

  1223. the same

  1224. suffering?

  1225. The loss of

  1226. property,

  1227. the loss of

  1228. friendships,

  1229. the loss of

  1230. dignity in the

  1231. community.

  1232. And now

  1233. what seemed

  1234. to eclipse

  1235. it,

  1236. especially for

  1237. people of

  1238. compassion,

  1239. is to now

  1240. look on

  1241. somebody who's

  1242. in great

  1243. pain and

  1244. your heart

  1245. breaks for

  1246. them.

  1247. And it's

  1248. like,

  1249. I cannot

  1250. bear this

  1251. anymore.

  1252. I can't

  1253. do it

  1254. anymore.

  1255. Just end

  1256. it now,

  1257. Job.

  1258. Get it

  1259. over with.

  1260. That's what I

  1261. think is

  1262. happening.

  1263. And I say

  1264. that, by the

  1265. way, because

  1266. at the end

  1267. of the book,

  1268. this is a

  1269. spoiler alert,

  1270. at the end

  1271. of the book,

  1272. Job's wife

  1273. is restored

  1274. along with

  1275. Job.

  1276. Her family

  1277. restored.

  1278. Her property,

  1279. her dignity,

  1280. her standing

  1281. in the

  1282. community.

  1283. All of that

  1284. is restored

  1285. to her

  1286. too.

  1287. So,

  1288. it's a

  1289. reminder,

  1290. it's a

  1291. reminder to

  1292. us not to

  1293. get too

  1294. arrogant.

  1295. Look at

  1296. his wife

  1297. and say,

  1298. what a

  1299. messenger of

  1300. Satan.

  1301. Well, she

  1302. was, but

  1303. every single

  1304. one of us

  1305. in this

  1306. room have

  1307. been there.

  1308. You have

  1309. been a

  1310. messenger of

  1311. Satan too.

  1312. And we're

  1313. going to

  1314. learn about

  1315. that more

  1316. in a couple

  1317. of weeks.

  1318. Okay.

  1319. A moment

  1320. of silence.

  1321. That's where

  1322. we're going to

  1323. finish with.

  1324. Very quickly.

  1325. A moment

  1326. of silence.

  1327. This is

  1328. Job's

  1329. friends.

  1330. Now, when

  1331. Job's three

  1332. friends heard

  1333. of all the

  1334. evil that

  1335. had come

  1336. upon him,

  1337. they came

  1338. each from

  1339. his own

  1340. place.

  1341. Eliphaz,

  1342. the Temanite,

  1343. Bildad,

  1344. the Shuhite,

  1345. Zophar,

  1346. the Namathite.

  1347. By the way,

  1348. have you heard

  1349. the joke?

  1350. Here's the

  1351. shortest guy

  1352. in the

  1353. Bible.

  1354. Bildad,

  1355. the Shuhite.

  1356. He's only

  1357. the Shuhite.

  1358. They made

  1359. an appointment

  1360. together to

  1361. come to show

  1362. him sympathy

  1363. and comfort.

  1364. And when

  1365. they saw

  1366. him from

  1367. a distance,

  1368. they did

  1369. not recognize

  1370. him.

  1371. And they

  1372. raised their

  1373. voices and

  1374. wept.

  1375. They tore

  1376. their robes

  1377. and sprinkled

  1378. dust on their

  1379. heads towards

  1380. heaven.

  1381. They sat

  1382. with him

  1383. on the

  1384. ground

  1385. seven days

  1386. and seven

  1387. nights,

  1388. and no

  1389. one spoke

  1390. a word

  1391. to him,

  1392. for they

  1393. saw that

  1394. his suffering

  1395. was very

  1396. great.

  1397. This was

  1398. the very

  1399. best they

  1400. could ever

  1401. do.

  1402. This is

  1403. the best

  1404. they will

  1405. ever be

  1406. in this

  1407. book,

  1408. by the

  1409. way.

  1410. What's

  1411. significant

  1412. is we

  1413. don't know

  1414. exactly where

  1415. they're from,

  1416. but it's

  1417. likely they

  1418. were from

  1419. Edom,

  1420. which was

  1421. just to

  1422. the west

  1423. of Uz.

  1424. And it's

  1425. significant

  1426. because Edom

  1427. was known

  1428. as a,

  1429. is renowned

  1430. for its

  1431. wisdom.

  1432. And so here

  1433. are the

  1434. aged,

  1435. here are

  1436. the wise,

  1437. they're coming

  1438. to bring

  1439. wisdom and

  1440. comfort.

  1441. They've

  1442. arranged a

  1443. time in

  1444. the schedule

  1445. to come

  1446. and to

  1447. meet with

  1448. Job.

  1449. And make

  1450. this appointment.

  1451. And then

  1452. they round

  1453. the corner

  1454. and they

  1455. see Job

  1456. in the

  1457. worst place

  1458. he could

  1459. possibly be

  1460. with open

  1461. wounds,

  1462. sitting on

  1463. the ashes,

  1464. scraping himself

  1465. with a piece

  1466. of pottery.

  1467. And they

  1468. lose it.

  1469. They're so

  1470. broken over

  1471. the scene.

  1472. They can't

  1473. even recognize

  1474. their friend.

  1475. Face swollen,

  1476. sores oozing,

  1477. blackened skin,

  1478. this emaciated

  1479. form.

  1480. who is

  1481. this guy?

  1482. What tragedy

  1483. has befallen

  1484. him?

  1485. And the

  1486. wisest thing

  1487. that they do

  1488. is keep

  1489. their mouth

  1490. shut.

  1491. And we're

  1492. going to

  1493. learn about

  1494. this more

  1495. in a couple

  1496. of weeks.

  1497. But when

  1498. God does

  1499. not speak,

  1500. be quiet.

  1501. The silence

  1502. of God

  1503. should be a

  1504. clue to us

  1505. that we also

  1506. must be silent.

  1507. God

  1508. and sometimes

  1509. the best thing

  1510. that we could

  1511. possibly do

  1512. is sit

  1513. and cry

  1514. and pray

  1515. and just

  1516. be a friend

  1517. that's there.

  1518. I tried to

  1519. find this story

  1520. and just bear

  1521. with me.

  1522. I'm just going

  1523. to retell it.

  1524. I was reading

  1525. in a book

  1526. and it was

  1527. interesting.

  1528. The author of

  1529. this book

  1530. talked about

  1531. a tragedy

  1532. that he

  1533. experienced

  1534. where his

  1535. wife had

  1536. died because

  1537. of an

  1538. illness and

  1539. he was so

  1540. broken and

  1541. troubled and

  1542. grieving.

  1543. And he gets

  1544. this call from

  1545. a friend and

  1546. he answers the

  1547. call and the

  1548. friend just

  1549. says,

  1550. listen,

  1551. I'm in town,

  1552. I'm staying

  1553. at the hotel,

  1554. I just want

  1555. you to know

  1556. I'm here

  1557. and if you

  1558. need me,

  1559. you know

  1560. where to

  1561. find me.

  1562. I would love

  1563. to come over,

  1564. I would love

  1565. to listen to

  1566. what you're

  1567. going through,

  1568. I want to

  1569. pray with you,

  1570. I want to

  1571. put my arm

  1572. around you

  1573. and give you

  1574. a hug,

  1575. but I'm just

  1576. here to be

  1577. for you.

  1578. If you don't

  1579. need me,

  1580. I'll just turn

  1581. around and go

  1582. back home

  1583. the end of

  1584. this week

  1585. and it'll

  1586. be fine.

  1587. I wonder

  1588. if we can

  1589. learn a

  1590. lesson from

  1591. his friends

  1592. here and

  1593. learning the

  1594. example of

  1595. quietness when

  1596. God has not

  1597. spoken,

  1598. learning to be

  1599. quiet and

  1600. learning the

  1601. significance of

  1602. just keeping our

  1603. mouth shut and

  1604. maybe praying for

  1605. this individual,

  1606. putting your arm

  1607. around them,

  1608. crying with

  1609. them,

  1610. tossing up some

  1611. dust to the

  1612. heavens,

  1613. whatever the

  1614. expression of

  1615. grief is,

  1616. join them in

  1617. that process

  1618. and just be a

  1619. listening,

  1620. tender,

  1621. sympathetic

  1622. ear.

  1623. Let me pray

  1624. for us.

  1625. I'm going to

  1626. let you watch

  1627. a quick testimony

  1628. video.

  1629. We're going to

  1630. do a baptism

  1631. and then I

  1632. will dismiss

  1633. you.

  1634. All right?

  1635. Father, thank

  1636. you for the

  1637. example of

  1638. Job.

  1639. Thank you for

  1640. his enduring

  1641. heart that was

  1642. full of

  1643. integrity.

  1644. God, I

  1645. pray that you

  1646. would help

  1647. us as men,

  1648. as fathers,

  1649. as single

  1650. guys, young

  1651. and old,

  1652. wherever we

  1653. might fit into

  1654. the continuum.

  1655. I pray that you

  1656. would help us,

  1657. Lord, to be the

  1658. kinds of men

  1659. that you take

  1660. notice of because

  1661. we're filled up

  1662. with the spirit.

  1663. We're strengthened

  1664. by your word.

  1665. We're moving in

  1666. the right direction

  1667. because we're

  1668. following the

  1669. scriptures.

  1670. scriptures.

  1671. May that be

  1672. the expression of

  1673. our life and

  1674. may, God, we

  1675. use that to

  1676. encourage and

  1677. strengthen the

  1678. people around us.

  1679. We pray in

  1680. Jesus' name.

  1681. Amen.

  1682. Thank you.
