  1. Let me just pause and pray.

  2. Father, as we open your word,

  3. !

  4. Lord, the hope of eternal life.

  5. And we look forward, as we were singing,

  6. of spending eternity with our treasure,

  7. our Savior, Jesus.

  8. Thank you for leaving us your word.

  9. It is full.

  10. It is rich.

  11. It is your thought on how we should live.

  12. It's your desire.

  13. It expresses your very character.

  14. As we look at this text this morning,

  15. help us to not only have a deeper knowledge,

  16. but a commitment to obey you and to love you.

  17. There are those among us who are suffering.

  18. Those who are challenged by physical challenge,

  19. financial challenges, relationship challenges.

  20. God, would your word today meet them where they're at.

  21. I pray that your spirit would bring comfort

  22. and bring direction into their lives.

  23. We want to do this for the praise and sake

  24. of our Lord and Savior, Jesus.

  25. Amen.

  26. Well, at this point in our study,

  27. in Job chapter 12 now,

    Job 12 chapter mention

  28. we are at the end of the first of three rounds

  29. of, I guess, so-called encouragement

  30. that the friends of Job are going to be bringing to him.

  31. We've heard from the theologian Eliphaz,

  32. who based his counsel on a vision of God's greatness.

  33. He argued that suffering is a consequence of sin.

  34. And therefore, in his human wisdom,

  35. Eliphaz concluded that Job must have sinned

  36. and he needed to confess and repent.

  37. And then we've heard from the traditionalist, Bildad.

  38. He based his counsel on time-honored concepts of justice,

  39. arguing that God is just and he does not pervert justice.

  40. And therefore, in his human wisdom,

  41. Bildad concluded that because Job was suffering

  42. and experienced great loss,

  43. it must be because of the consequence of great sin.

  44. And therefore, Job must repent to be restored to prosperity.

  45. And the third friend, Zophar,

  46. he was the moralist who based his counsel

  47. on a consensus of human wisdom,

  48. arguing that God is infinitely transcendent.

  49. He is above our thoughts.

  50. God is also righteous in his judgments.

  51. And in his human wisdom,

  52. Zophar concluded that Job absolutely deserved

  53. everything that he got.

  54. And not only that, he deserved more.

  55. Job, therefore, must confess and repent.

  56. Well, Zophar was the most direct.

  57. He was the harshest with his accusations.

  58. He lacked any empathy for Job's distress.

  59. I guess you could say he was the worst counselor, Zophar.

  60. Sorry.

  61. That didn't go over very well in the first group.

  62. Well, we come to Job chapter 12.

    Job 12 chapter mention

  63. It's the longest reply of Job to his three friends.

  64. And I'm going to start with his direct defense to his friends.

  65. First of all, Job's stinging criticism of his friends.

  66. There in chapter 12, verse 1.

  67. And again, I don't mean to make light,

  68. but as I thought about this text a lot,

  69. I kept hearing in my mind the voice of Inigo Montoya

  70. from The Princess Bride.

  71. And he kept saying,

  72. I can hear Job saying,

  73. you keep using that word, the word wisdom.

  74. You keep using that word.

  75. I do not think it means what you think it means.

  76. And so we see A,

  77. to his friends,

  78. you are not what you think.

  79. There in chapter 12, verse 1.

  80. With no little sarcasm,

  81. Job replied,

  82. doubtless,

  83. you are the only people who matter,

  84. and wisdom will die with you.

  85. He's saying,

  86. oh, you're the experts.

  87. And when you die,

  88. I guess wisdom's going to be gone.

  89. This wisdom that Job refers to

  90. is what Pastor Andrew introduced several weeks ago

  91. called retributive justice.

  92. It just means that good deeds are rewarded always,

  93. and bad deeds are punished always.

  94. We'll see next week that that's not true.

  95. And Job says to them,

  96. this is the world's best wisdom that you're offering me.

  97. And guys, I already know it.

  98. It's wrong.

  99. You are not what you think.

  100. You believe you are a comforter.

  101. Look at verse 5.

  102. But your words are cruel and contemptuous.

  103. Those who are at ease, Job says,

  104. have contempt for misfortune

  105. as the fate of those whose feet are slipping.

  106. You know, when you compare their responses to Job

  107. with what James says is true wisdom

  108. in James chapter 3,

    James 3 chapter mention

  109. you read this.

  110. But the wisdom from above

  111. is first pure,

  112. then peaceable,

  113. gentle,

  114. open to reason,

  115. full of mercy

  116. and good fruits.

  117. It's impartial

  118. and sincere.

  119. This was not

  120. the spirit of his friends to Job.

  121. This was not

  122. wisdom

  123. from on high.

  124. In fact,

  125. you might make an argument

  126. that this was wisdom from below.

  127. You are not

  128. what you think.

  129. Look at verse 2 of chapter 13.

  130. You believe you're superior to me.

  131. I am not inferior to you.

  132. You believe

  133. you are not what you think.

  134. You believe you speak truth

  135. that will heal my suffering.

  136. But you are heartless liars

  137. and worthless quacks.

  138. 13 verse 4.

  139. He says,

  140. you, however,

  141. smear me with lies.

  142. You are worthless physicians,

  143. all of you.

  144. You are not what you think.

  145. In chapter 13 verse 7.

  146. You believe you're arguing

  147. for God's,

  148. on his behalf,

  149. but you are false

  150. and deceitful counselors.

  151. You are not what you think.

  152. In chapter 13 verse 8.

  153. You believe that you can

  154. get in tight with God somehow

  155. and show him partiality,

  156. but his majesty

  157. would terrify you

  158. and his dread would drown you.

  159. In verse 8,

  160. it says,

  161. will you show him partiality?

  162. Will you agree

  163. or will you argue

  164. the case for God?

  165. And then in verse 10.

  166. He will surely call you to account

  167. if you secretly showed partiality.

  168. And 11,

  169. would not his splendor

  170. terrify you?

  171. Would not the dread of him

  172. fall on you?

  173. You are not what you think,

  174. Job says to his friends.

  175. Look at verse 12 of chapter 13.

  176. You believe you have

  177. all the perfect answers

  178. and solid defenses,

  179. but your maxims

  180. are proverbs of ashes

  181. and your defenses

  182. are defenses of clay.

  183. They are nothing.

  184. You are not what you think.

  185. And then go back up

  186. a little bit to verse 9.

  187. Job says to them,

  188. would it turn out well

  189. if he examined you?

  190. Could you deceive him

  191. as you might deceive a mortal?

  192. In other words,

  193. how will it go with you

  194. if when he searches you out,

  195. just as he has searched me out,

  196. you measure your own circumstances

  197. by these same faulty standards?

  198. Sounds a little bit like Jesus saying,

  199. whoever is without sin

  200. may cast the first stone.

  201. And then chapter 13,

  202. verse 5,

  203. Job is just fed up.

  204. And he says this,

  205. guys,

  206. just shut up your mouths.

  207. Be quiet.

  208. Be silent.

  209. Your silence

  210. would be your wisdom.

  211. It reminds me of Proverbs

    Proverbs 17:28

  212. chapter 17,

  213. verse 28.

  214. In Proverbs 7,

  215. 28,

  216. even a fool

  217. who keeps silent

  218. is considered wise.

  219. And when he closes his lips,

  220. he's deemed intelligent.

  221. And so we see Job

  222. in his defense

  223. has discredited

  224. his accusers.

  225. Their accusations

  226. are invalid.

  227. You are not

  228. what you think.

  229. And then he says,

  230. I am not what you think.

  231. Go back to chapter 12,

  232. verses 3 and 4.

  233. I am a man

  234. of understanding

  235. and wisdom.

  236. There in verse 3.

  237. But I have a mind

  238. as well as you.

  239. I'm not inferior to you.

  240. Who does not know

  241. all these things?

  242. I am not what you think.

  243. I am no fool

  244. as you say.

  245. I'm not what you think.

  246. Verse 4,

  247. the very first part of this.

  248. I am one

  249. who routinely

  250. called on God

  251. and God answered me.

  252. I have become

  253. a laughing stock

  254. to my friends.

  255. This is 12, 4a.

  256. Though I called on God

  257. and he answered me.

  258. This phrase,

  259. this verb called on,

  260. this participle

  261. points to Job's

  262. regular practice

  263. of calling on God

  264. and having God

  265. answer him.

  266. Job's saying to his friends,

  267. you think you know

  268. what God is thinking?

  269. I regularly talked

  270. with him.

  271. We were challenged

  272. in the very first message

  273. on Job

  274. to get Christopher Ash's

  275. commentary

  276. on the book of Job.

  277. And frequently,

  278. Ash shines the light

  279. on how Jesus

  280. comes into view

  281. through Job's life

  282. and circumstances.

  283. as we sang,

  284. and thank you,

  285. John,

  286. and worship team

  287. for pointing us

  288. to the Lord Jesus.

  289. Because as we sang,

  290. the Lord Jesus,

  291. the innocent one,

  292. he was blameless

  293. and yet he was mocked

  294. by his brethren too.

  295. They said things like,

  296. remember,

  297. he trusted in God.

  298. Let him deliver him now

  299. if he will save him.

  300. I am not what you think,

  301. Job says to his friends.

  302. The second part

  303. of that,

  304. verse four,

  305. a mere laughingstock,

  306. though righteous

  307. and blameless,

  308. Job says,

  309. I am blameless.

  310. I am righteous.

  311. Interestingly,

  312. isn't it,

  313. that this is

  314. the exact wording

  315. of what God said

  316. about Job

  317. in chapter one.

  318. And Job didn't

  319. even know that.

  320. Job knew

  321. that his life

  322. was blameless.

  323. He even said so

  324. back in Job chapter nine,

  325. verses 15 and 20,

  326. where he says,

  327. I am in the right.

  328. I am innocent.

  329. I'm not what you think.

  330. Chapter 13,

  331. verse three.

  332. I am suffering, guys,

  333. but not for the reasons

  334. that you suppose.

  335. And I will plead

  336. my case before God.

  337. Verse three says,

  338. I desire to speak

  339. to the Almighty

  340. and argue my case

  341. before God.

  342. You drop down

  343. to 13,

  344. verses 15 through 19.

  345. Though he slay me,

  346. yet I will hope in him.

  347. I will surely defend

  348. my ways to his face.

  349. Indeed,

  350. this will turn out

  351. for my deliverance,

  352. for no godless person

  353. would dare come before him.

  354. Job understood

  355. God is holy.

  356. Coming before him,

  357. it means something.

  358. And only an innocent man

  359. could come before him.

  360. And Job

  361. supposed he was innocent

  362. and that he would be able

  363. to argue his case

  364. before God.

  365. And then he says

  366. in verse 17,

  367. listen carefully

  368. to what I say.

  369. Let my words

  370. ring in your ears.

  371. Now that I've prepared

  372. my case,

  373. I know

  374. I will be vindicated.

  375. You are not

  376. what you think.

  377. I am not what you think.

  378. And then he says,

  379. God is not what you think.

  380. In chapter 12,

  381. going back to chapter 12,

  382. verses 6 through 10,

  383. God mocks

  384. your worldly wisdom,

  385. this retributive justice,

  386. by allowing robbers

  387. to be at peace

  388. and provokers of God

  389. to rest securely.

  390. I won't spend

  391. a lot of time on this.

  392. Again,

  393. I think we're covering

  394. that next week.

  395. But listen,

  396. aren't you glad

  397. that God doesn't judge

  398. sin immediately

  399. and as harshly

  400. as he justly should?

  401. He is patient with us.

  402. He is long-suffering.

  403. God is not what you think.

  404. In verses 7 through 10,

  405. just as the beasts

  406. and birds

  407. and bushes of the earth

  408. and the fish of the sea

  409. they will teach you.

  410. They will tell you.

  411. They will teach you.

  412. The sea will declare to you.

  413. And then in verse 9,

  414. Who among all these

  415. does not know

  416. that the hand of the Lord

  417. has done this?

  418. In his hand

  419. is the life

  420. of every living thing

  421. and the breath

  422. of all mankind.

  423. They'll teach you

  424. that he is the creator.

  425. He is the sovereign one

  426. over all creation.

  427. And he has allowed

  428. this suffering

  429. though I am innocent.

  430. God is not what you think.

  431. God will not fit neatly

  432. into your tiny little

  433. domestic box of thinking.

  434. He will not be tamed

  435. by your faulty view of him.

  436. He is terrifyingly sovereign

  437. and often acts

  438. in ways opposite

  439. what we imagine.

  440. In chapter 12

  441. verses 14 and 15,

  442. if he tears down,

  443. none can rebuild.

  444. If he shuts a man in,

  445. none can open.

  446. If he withholds the waters,

  447. they dry up.

  448. If he sends them out,

  449. they overwhelm the land.

  450. And then you have

  451. this section

  452. from verses 17 through 25

  453. where God

  454. almost intentionally,

  455. it's as if he delights

  456. in doing the opposite

  457. of what you would expect.

  458. Like in verse 17,

  459. judges,

  460. we count judges

  461. as wise, right?

  462. Well, what does God do?

  463. He makes them fools.

  464. In verse 18,

  465. or verse,

  466. yeah,

  467. verse 18,

  468. kings are the ones

  469. who command prisoners

  470. to be bound.

  471. What does God do?

  472. He looses

  473. those bonds of kings.

  474. Verse 19,

  475. the mighty,

  476. God overthrows.

  477. Verse 20,

  478. elders,

  479. you expect elders

  480. to have discernment

  481. and wisdom.

  482. What does God do?

  483. He takes it away.

  484. Verse 21,

  485. princes,

  486. which are noble,

  487. God pours contempt

  488. on them.

  489. Verse 22,

  490. God uncovers

  491. the deeps

  492. out of darkness,

  493. the things

  494. that are hidden.

  495. God uncovers.

  496. He brings deep darkness

  497. to light.

  498. And you could read

  499. the rest of those verses.

  500. God,

  501. he's doing the opposite.

  502. He does not fit

  503. into our little mold.

  504. It reminds me

  505. of what the Lord said

  506. through the prophet Isaiah

  507. in chapter 55,

  508. verses 8 and 9.

  509. For my thoughts

  510. are not your thoughts,

  511. neither are your ways

  512. my ways,

  513. declares the Lord.

  514. For as the heavens

  515. are higher than the earth,

  516. so are my ways

  517. higher than your ways,

  518. and my thoughts

  519. higher than your thoughts.

  520. In The Lion,

  521. the Witch,

  522. and the Wardrobe

  523. by C.S. Lewis,

  524. there's a scene

  525. in the home

  526. of Mr. and Mrs. Beaver,

  527. and Lucy asks a question

  528. regarding Aslan,

  529. the lion,

  530. the king of the beasts.

  531. When hearing about him

  532. for the very first time,

  533. she asks,

  534. is he safe?

  535. Mr. Beaver replies,

  536. who said anything

  537. about safe?

  538. Of course he isn't safe,

  539. but he is good.

  540. He's the king,

  541. I tell you.

  542. Well,

  543. after discrediting

  544. his accusers,

  545. we begin to see

  546. a glimpse

  547. of Job

  548. stirring faith

  549. and his steadfast hope,

  550. but it's just a glimpse,

  551. mind you.

  552. In chapter 12,

  553. verses 13,

  554. starting at verse 13,

  555. Job's confronting

  556. his friends.

  557. I want you to note

  558. his affirmation

  559. of who God is

  560. and his desire

  561. to plead his innocence

  562. before him.

  563. 12, 13,

  564. and there's three different

  565. wisdom words here

  566. and one power word.

  567. With God,

  568. our wisdom

  569. and might,

  570. he has counsel

  571. and understanding.

  572. And what Job

  573. is declaring is,

  574. this is the God

  575. that I believe in.

  576. He is a God

  577. that is all-wise.

  578. He is a God

  579. who is powerful.

  580. If you drop down

  581. to verse 16,

  582. with him

  583. our strength

  584. and sound wisdom.

  585. The deceived

  586. and the deceiver

  587. are his.

  588. All are under

  589. his authority

  590. and no one

  591. is pulling anything

  592. over his eyes.

  593. And then move over

  594. to chapter 13,

  595. look at verse 3.

  596. Job says,

  597. but I would speak

  598. to the Almighty.

  599. Note this term

  600. for God,

  601. this Hebrew word

  602. Shaddai

  603. describes God's position

  604. and power

  605. and sovereignty

  606. over all his creation.

  607. It's used 31 times

  608. in the book of Job.

  609. And interestingly,

  610. this is how God

  611. introduced himself

  612. to Abraham

  613. in Genesis 17, 1.

  614. We read here,

  615. if I could,

  616. there it is.

  617. When Abraham

  618. was 99 years old,

  619. the Lord appeared

  620. to him and said,

  621. I am God Almighty.

  622. I am El Shaddai.

  623. Walk before me

  624. and be blameless.

  625. What does the Lord

  626. require of Abraham?

  627. To walk before him

  628. and be what?

  629. Blameless.

  630. Does that sound familiar?

  631. Job uses this term

  632. for God again

  633. in chapter 37,

  634. verse 23.

  635. The Almighty,

  636. we cannot find him.

  637. He is great in power,

  638. justice,

  639. and abundant righteousness

  640. he will not violate.

  641. And guys,

  642. this is the very crux

  643. of the book of Job.

  644. God's integrity,

  645. not Job's,

  646. is at stake.

  647. Under intense,

  648. unbearable suffering,

  649. in the midst

  650. of confusion

  651. and chaos,

  652. Job anchors

  653. his faith

  654. on the Almighty.

  655. He declares,

  656. he is omnipotent.

  657. He is just.

  658. He is righteous.

  659. And he is my hope.

  660. As the clouds

  661. of despair

  662. just briefly part,

  663. we see such

  664. stirring faith

  665. and steadfast hope.

  666. Well,

  667. we move from

  668. Job's direct defense

  669. to his friends

  670. to Job's desired defense

  671. to his God.

  672. In chapter 13,

  673. verse 20,

  674. as we read earlier,

  675. Job desired to take

  676. his case before God,

  677. to argue his case.

  678. And he starts

  679. to do that here

  680. in verse 20

  681. of chapter 13.

  682. However,

  683. Job understands

  684. that coming to God

  685. is not a light thing.

  686. And he asked God

  687. for two favors.

  688. In verse 20,

  689. only grant me two things,

  690. and then I will not

  691. hide myself

  692. from your face.

  693. Verse 21,

  694. withdraw your hand

  695. far from me,

  696. and let not dread

  697. of you terrify me.

  698. Job's saying,

  699. God,

  700. give me some space.

  701. You overwhelm me.

  702. Verse 22,

  703. then call,

  704. and I will answer,

  705. or let me speak,

  706. and you reply to me.

  707. See,

  708. Job recognized

  709. that the root

  710. of all his suffering,

  711. the root of all the pain,

  712. was sin.

  713. And so we're going

  714. to talk about

  715. sin addressed.

  716. In verse 23 there

  717. of chapter 13,

  718. Job's going to use

  719. four words for sin,

  720. one of them twice.

  721. And then he's going

  722. to ask God,

  723. why are you turning

  724. your face away from me?

  725. Why are you counting

  726. me as your enemy?

  727. Verse 23,

  728. how many are my iniquities

  729. and my sins?

  730. Make me to know

  731. my transgression

  732. and my sin.

  733. Why do you hide

  734. your face

  735. and count me

  736. as your enemy?

  737. does that not sound

  738. like our Lord

  739. and Savior Jesus Christ?

  740. Quoting Psalm 22,

  741. my God,

  742. my God,

  743. why have you

  744. forsaken me?

  745. Verse 25,

  746. will you frighten

  747. a driven leaf

  748. and pursue dry chaff?

  749. For you write

  750. bitter things against me

  751. and make me inherit

  752. the iniquities

  753. of my youth.

  754. You put my feet

  755. in the stocks

  756. and watch my paths.

  757. You set a limit

  758. on the soles

  759. of my feet.

  760. Well, Job mistakes

  761. God's treatment

  762. against him

  763. as judgment

  764. against the sins

  765. of his youth.

  766. He doesn't understand

  767. why God is treating him

  768. as a guilty sinner

  769. when he carefully,

  770. when he lovingly,

  771. when he worshipfully

  772. sacrificed to God

  773. there as we read

  774. in chapter 1

  775. for himself

  776. but also for the sins

  777. of his family.

  778. And this is what's

  779. so hard,

  780. I believe,

  781. for Job.

  782. Lord,

  783. I love you.

  784. I have obeyed you.

  785. I trust you.

  786. So why am I still suffering?

  787. Sometimes,

  788. the innocent suffer too.

  789. Aren't you grateful

  790. for Jesus?

  791. The innocent one

  792. who suffered

  793. the judgment

  794. for our sin?

  795. He experienced

  796. the full wrath

  797. of God

  798. against all

  799. of our sin?

  800. He experienced

  801. the abandonment

  802. of his heavenly Father

  803. for you

  804. and for me.

  805. Paul,

  806. under the direction

  807. of the Holy Spirit,

  808. overwhelmed by grace,

  809. says this

  810. in 2 Corinthians 5,

    2 Corinthians 5:21

  811. verse 21.

  812. For our sake,

  813. he made him,

  814. Jesus,

  815. to be sin

  816. who knew no sin

  817. so that in him

  818. we might become

  819. the righteousness

  820. of God.

  821. Well,

  822. the weight of sin

  823. for Job was heavy

  824. and so was the fact

  825. that sin

  826. leads to mortality.

  827. And that's our next point,

  828. mortality addressed.

  829. There in verse 28,

  830. Job says this,

  831. Man wastes away

  832. like a rotten thing,

  833. like a garment

  834. that is moth-eaten.

  835. Chapter 14,

  836. verse 1,

  837. Man who is born of woman

  838. is few of days

  839. and full of trouble.

  840. He comes out

  841. like a flower

  842. and withers.

  843. He flees like a shadow

  844. and continues not.

  845. And do you open

  846. your eyes on such a one

  847. and bring me

  848. into judgment with you?

  849. Who can bring

  850. a clean thing

  851. out of an unclean?

  852. There is not one.

  853. And since his days

  854. are determined

  855. and the number

  856. of his months

  857. is with you

  858. and you have appointed

  859. his limits

  860. that he cannot pass,

  861. look away from him.

  862. Leave him alone

  863. that he may enjoy

  864. like a hired hand

  865. his day.

  866. What Job is describing

  867. here is the frailty

  868. of man

  869. as one whose life

  870. wastes away

  871. and is full of trouble.

  872. Life is fleeting

  873. like a withering flower.

  874. Man who hasn't

  875. a few of us

  876. bought flowers

  877. for our wives

  878. and a week later

  879. we're going like

  880. well that was fast.

  881. Life flees

  882. like a shadow.

  883. I came to Maranatha

  884. when I was 23 years old guys.

  885. Look at me.

  886. It just happens

  887. just like that.

  888. And sin

  889. is causing

  890. this decay.

  891. Matthew Henry

  892. in connecting

  893. verse 4

  894. with verse 1

  895. comments on the inherent

  896. sinfulness of humanity

  897. stating that

  898. clean children

  899. cannot come

  900. from unclean parents

  901. any more than

  902. pure streams

  903. come from

  904. an impure spring

  905. or grapes

  906. from thorns.

  907. This is the teaching

  908. of total depravity.

  909. There is none

  910. righteous,

  911. no,

  912. not one.

  913. and no one

  914. has any

  915. inherent ability

  916. to save themselves.

  917. And Job is saying

  918. God

  919. you who are

  920. eternal

  921. you're pure

  922. you're great

  923. you see that

  924. I am the rotting one

  925. I am the

  926. moth eaten garment

  927. the fading flower

  928. and the fleeing shadow

  929. look away from me

  930. withdraw your hand

  931. of judgment

  932. Lord have mercy

  933. on me.

  934. And then we see

  935. death addressed

  936. there in chapter

  937. 14 verses 7

  938. through 12

  939. we read this

  940. for there's hope

  941. for a tree

  942. if it be cut down

  943. that it will

  944. sprout again

  945. and that its

  946. shoots

  947. will not cease

  948. though its root

  949. grows old

  950. in the earth

  951. and its stump

  952. die in the soil

  953. yet at the scent

  954. of water

  955. it will bud

  956. and put out

  957. its branches

  958. like a young plant

  959. but a man dies

  960. and is laid low

  961. man breathes

  962. his last

  963. and where is he

  964. as waters

  965. fail from a lake

  966. and a river

  967. wastes away

  968. and dries up

  969. so a man

  970. lies down

  971. and rises

  972. not again

  973. till the heavens

  974. are no more

  975. he will not awake

  976. or be roused

  977. out of his sleep.

  978. In the Bible

  979. knowledge commentary

  980. John Wolvard

  981. and Roy Zuck

  982. state that

  983. this does not teach

  984. annihilation

  985. it simply means

  986. that a man

  987. cannot relive

  988. his entire life

  989. in the same

  990. physical body

  991. death

  992. is final

  993. the question

  994. at the end

  995. of verse 10

  996. if a man dies

  997. where is he

  998. is a rhetorical one

  999. the answer being

  1000. he's in Sheol

  1001. he's dead

  1002. I believe

  1003. as Job

  1004. thought about it

  1005. it just seems

  1006. so unfair

  1007. why should a tree

  1008. have a better hope

  1009. of resurrection

  1010. than a man

  1011. his conclusion

  1012. in verse 12

  1013. which says

  1014. so a man lies

  1015. down and rises

  1016. not again

  1017. it reflects

  1018. his uncertain

  1019. and his incomplete

  1020. understanding

  1021. of the afterlife

  1022. it reminds us

  1023. of a principle

  1024. in the New Testament

  1025. from 2nd Timothy

  1026. chapter 2

  1027. verse 10

  1028. listen to this

  1029. and which now

  1030. has been

  1031. manifested

  1032. through the

  1033. appearing

  1034. of our

  1035. Savior

  1036. Christ Jesus

  1037. who abolished

  1038. death

  1039. and he brought

  1040. life and

  1041. immortality

  1042. to light

  1043. through the

  1044. gospel

  1045. Job did not

  1046. know this

  1047. verse

  1048. his view

  1049. was incomplete

  1050. street

  1051. it appears

  1052. that actually

  1053. his view

  1054. of the

  1055. afterlife

  1056. was cloudy

  1057. and dark

  1058. clouds

  1059. at best

  1060. note that

  1061. later God

  1062. challenged him

  1063. and corrected

  1064. Job's

  1065. assertations

  1066. regarding the

  1067. afterlife

  1068. reminding Job

  1069. that he did

  1070. not in fact

  1071. know what

  1072. life after death

  1073. was like

  1074. in Job

    Job 38:2

  1075. chapter 38

  1076. verse 2

  1077. we read this

  1078. who is this

  1079. that darkens

  1080. counsel by words

  1081. without knowledge

  1082. Job

  1083. you just

  1084. don't know

  1085. you're speaking

  1086. about things

  1087. that you're

  1088. ignorant of

  1089. verse 17

  1090. have the gates

  1091. of death

  1092. been revealed

  1093. to you

  1094. or have you

  1095. seen the gates

  1096. of deep

  1097. darkness

  1098. verse 19

  1099. where is the

  1100. way

  1101. to the dwelling

  1102. of light

  1103. and where is

  1104. the place

  1105. of darkness

  1106. that you may

  1107. take it

  1108. to its territory

  1109. and that you

  1110. may discern

  1111. the paths

  1112. to its home

  1113. we continue

  1114. to see this

  1115. cloudiness

  1116. back in

  1117. chapter 14

  1118. verses 13

  1119. through 17

  1120. where Job

  1121. asked for

  1122. some relief

  1123. longing

  1124. for the grave

  1125. to end

  1126. his suffering

  1127. and hoping

  1128. for something

  1129. beyond

  1130. and that

  1131. brings us

  1132. to our

  1133. fourth point

  1134. relief

  1135. addressed

  1136. there in

  1137. chapter 14

  1138. verse 13

  1139. oh that you

  1140. would hide

  1141. me in

  1142. shield

  1143. that you

  1144. would conceal

  1145. me until

  1146. your wrath

  1147. be passed

  1148. that you

  1149. would point

  1150. me a set

  1151. time

  1152. and remember

  1153. me

  1154. if a man

  1155. dies

  1156. shall he

  1157. live again

  1158. all the days

  1159. of my service

  1160. I would wait

  1161. till my renewal

  1162. should come

  1163. you would call

  1164. and I would

  1165. answer you

  1166. you would long

  1167. for the work

  1168. of your hands

  1169. for then you

  1170. would number

  1171. my steps

  1172. you would not

  1173. keep watch

  1174. over my sin

  1175. my transgression

  1176. would be sealed

  1177. up in a bag

  1178. and you would

  1179. cover over

  1180. my iniquity

  1181. Job thought

  1182. perhaps even

  1183. hoped

  1184. that death

  1185. was better

  1186. than his current

  1187. misery

  1188. and then he

  1189. asks a tremendous

  1190. question

  1191. in verse 14

  1192. if a man

  1193. dies

  1194. shall he

  1195. live again

  1196. G. Campbell

  1197. Morgan says

  1198. the question

  1199. of Job

  1200. was answered

  1201. by Jesus

  1202. amen

  1203. Jesus says

  1204. this in

  1205. John chapter

    John 11:25–26

  1206. 11

  1207. verses 25

  1208. to 26

  1209. I am the

  1210. resurrection

  1211. and the

  1212. life

  1213. whoever

  1214. believes in

  1215. me

  1216. though he

  1217. were dead

  1218. yet shall

  1219. he live

  1220. and everyone

  1221. who lives

  1222. and believes

  1223. in me

  1224. shall never

  1225. die

  1226. do you

  1227. believe this

  1228. and I ask

  1229. you

  1230. do you

  1231. believe this

  1232. coming back

  1233. to Job

  1234. 14

  1235. 14

  1236. Job says

  1237. that he

  1238. would wait

  1239. till his

  1240. renewal

  1241. should come

  1242. the word

  1243. renewal

  1244. here

  1245. it's a

  1246. military

  1247. term

  1248. it just

  1249. means

  1250. changing

  1251. of the

  1252. guard

  1253. or relief

  1254. from duty

  1255. it was also

  1256. used to

  1257. describe

  1258. after when

  1259. a servant

  1260. had worked

  1261. all day

  1262. that the

  1263. next shift

  1264. came in

  1265. to replace

  1266. him

  1267. Job

  1268. hoped

  1269. death

  1270. would be

  1271. that next

  1272. shift

  1273. bringing

  1274. some kind

  1275. of relief

  1276. from his

  1277. present

  1278. agony

  1279. and then

  1280. we come

  1281. to verse

  1282. 15

  1283. I would

  1284. have loved

  1285. to heard

  1286. what the

  1287. connect group

  1288. said about

  1289. this this

  1290. morning

  1291. because

  1292. I could

  1293. use some

  1294. help here

  1295. twice last

  1296. week Daniel

  1297. said he

  1298. wrestled with

  1299. the text

  1300. I don't know

  1301. where you're

  1302. at Daniel

  1303. but I know

  1304. what it means

  1305. to wrestle

  1306. with the text

  1307. I really

  1308. wrestled

  1309. with this

  1310. verse

  1311. it appears

  1312. that Job

  1313. is backpedaling

  1314. and hoping

  1315. for a

  1316. restoration

  1317. of relationship

  1318. with God

  1319. after death

  1320. since he

  1321. is no longer

  1322. really hoping

  1323. for any

  1324. restoration

  1325. of life

  1326. during his

  1327. time on

  1328. earth

  1329. we see

  1330. again the

  1331. tension

  1332. and this

  1333. confusion

  1334. in Job

  1335. regarding

  1336. the afterlife

  1337. look at

  1338. verse 15

  1339. to say

  1340. you would

  1341. call

  1342. and I

  1343. would answer

  1344. you

  1345. you would

  1346. long

  1347. for the

  1348. work of

  1349. your hands

  1350. is much

  1351. more hopeful

  1352. and positive

  1353. than his

  1354. previous

  1355. statements

  1356. there is

  1357. this glimpse

  1358. of the

  1359. former

  1360. personal

  1361. relationship

  1362. that he

  1363. had with

  1364. God

  1365. 19th

  1366. century

  1367. Bible

  1368. scholar

  1369. Adam

  1370. Clark

  1371. commenting

  1372. on this

  1373. phrase

  1374. you would

  1375. long

  1376. for the

  1377. work of

  1378. your

  1379. hands

  1380. says

  1381. this

  1382. man

  1383. is one

  1384. of the

  1385. noblest

  1386. works

  1387. of God

  1388. he has

  1389. exhibited

  1390. him

  1391. as a

  1392. masterpiece

  1393. of his

  1394. creative

  1395. skill

  1396. power

  1397. and

  1398. goodness

  1399. nothing

  1400. less

  1401. than the

  1402. strongest

  1403. call

  1404. upon

  1405. his

  1406. justice

  1407. could

  1408. have

  1409. induced

  1410. him

  1411. thus

  1412. to

  1413. destroy

  1414. the

  1415. work

  1416. of

  1417. his

  1418. hands

  1419. no wonder

  1420. he has

  1421. an

  1422. earnest

  1423. desire

  1424. towards

  1425. it

  1426. even

  1427. even

  1428. God

  1429. is

  1430. represented

  1431. as

  1432. earnestly

  1433. longing

  1434. for the

  1435. ultimate

  1436. revivescence

  1437. it's just

  1438. the ability

  1439. to revive

  1440. of the

  1441. sleeping

  1442. dust

  1443. he cannot

  1444. he will

  1445. not

  1446. forget

  1447. the work

  1448. of his

  1449. hands

  1450. Job

  1451. seems to

  1452. believe

  1453. God

  1454. desires

  1455. that

  1456. relationship

  1457. as well

  1458. it's worth

  1459. noting

  1460. that at

  1461. this point

  1462. in his

  1463. reply

  1464. to his

  1465. friends

  1466. Job

  1467. is actually

  1468. praying

  1469. out loud

  1470. he's

  1471. talking

  1472. to the

  1473. almighty

  1474. and he's

  1475. saying this

  1476. in the

  1477. ears

  1478. of his

  1479. friends

  1480. at least

  1481. Zophers

  1482. hearing

  1483. and he

  1484. says

  1485. verses

  1486. 16

  1487. and 17

  1488. look at

  1489. 16

  1490. and 17

  1491. for then

  1492. you would

  1493. number

  1494. my steps

  1495. you would

  1496. not keep

  1497. watch

  1498. over my

  1499. sin

  1500. my

  1501. transgression

  1502. would be

  1503. sealed up

  1504. in a bag

  1505. and you

  1506. would

  1507. cover

  1508. over

  1509. my

  1510. iniquity

  1511. Job

  1512. prayed

  1513. these

  1514. words

  1515. not only

  1516. because

  1517. he desperately

  1518. wanted

  1519. God

  1520. not to

  1521. judge

  1522. him

  1523. according

  1524. to the

  1525. full

  1526. measure

  1527. of

  1528. his

  1529. sins

  1530. but

  1531. because

  1532. he

  1533. also

  1534. wanted

  1535. Zophers

  1536. and the

  1537. others

  1538. to hear

  1539. that Job

  1540. did in

  1541. fact

  1542. know

  1543. that

  1544. he

  1545. was

  1546. a

  1547. sinner

  1548. and

  1549. not

  1550. perfect

  1551. as

  1552. Zophers

  1553. accused

  1554. in

  1555. chapter

  1556. 11

  1557. verse

  1558. 4

  1559. Zophers

  1560. says

  1561. oh

  1562. for

  1563. you

  1564. say

  1565. my

  1566. doctrine

  1567. is

  1568. pure

  1569. and

  1570. I

  1571. am

  1572. clean

  1573. in

  1574. God's

  1575. eyes

  1576. well

  1577. we

  1578. move

  1579. on

  1580. to

  1581. point

  1582. five

  1583. here

  1584. destruction

  1585. and

  1586. pain

  1587. addressed

  1588. destruction

  1589. and

  1590. pain

  1591. addressed

  1592. verses

  1593. 18

  1594. through

  1595. 22

  1596. we

  1597. see

  1598. Job

  1599. swirling

  1600. back

  1601. into

  1602. misery

  1603. concluding

  1604. his

  1605. poem

  1606. in

  1607. despair

  1608. we

  1609. read

  1610. this

  1611. but

  1612. the

  1613. mountain

  1614. falls

  1615. and

  1616. crumbles

  1617. away

  1618. and

  1619. the

  1620. rock

  1621. is

  1622. removed

  1623. from

  1624. its

  1625. place

  1626. the

  1627. waters

  1628. wear

  1629. away

  1630. the

  1631. stones

  1632. the

  1633. torrents

  1634. wash

  1635. away

  1636. the

  1637. soil

  1638. of

  1639. the

  1640. earth

  1641. so

  1642. you

  1643. destroy

  1644. the

  1645. hope

  1646. of

  1647. man

  1648. you

  1649. prevail

  1650. against

  1651. him

  1652. and

  1653. he

  1654. passes

  1655. you

  1656. change

  1657. his

  1658. countenance

  1659. and

  1660. send

  1661. him

  1662. away

  1663. his

  1664. sons

  1665. come

  1666. to

  1667. honor

  1668. and

  1669. he

  1670. does

  1671. not

  1672. know

  1673. it

  1674. they

  1675. are

  1676. brought

  1677. low

  1678. and

  1679. he

  1680. perceives

  1681. it

  1682. not

  1683. he

  1684. only

  1685. feels

  1686. the

  1687. pain

  1688. of

  1689. his

  1690. own

  1691. body

  1692. and

  1693. he

  1694. mourns

  1695. only

  1696. for

  1697. himself

  1698. in

  1699. his

  1700. poetic

  1701. outpouring

  1702. we see

  1703. Job

  1704. crying

  1705. out

  1706. to

  1707. God

  1708. that

  1709. God

  1710. sweeps

  1711. away

  1712. the

  1713. hopes

  1714. of

  1715. man

  1716. just

  1717. like

  1718. the

  1719. torrents

  1720. sweep

  1721. away

  1722. the

  1723. soil

  1724. of

  1725. the

  1726. earth

  1727. Job

  1728. believes

  1729. when

  1730. God

  1731. sets

  1732. himself

  1733. against

  1734. a

  1735. man

  1736. there

  1737. is

  1738. nothing

  1739. that

  1740. the

  1741. man

  1742. can

  1743. do

  1744. God

  1745. will

  1746. prevail

  1747. against

  1748. him

  1749. and

  1750. I'll

  1751. just

  1752. confess

  1753. this

  1754. is

  1755. also

  1756. where

  1757. I

  1758. struggled

  1759. you

  1760. see

  1761. in

  1762. chapter

  1763. 14

  1764. verses

  1765. 7

  1766. through

  1767. 12

  1768. we

  1769. get

  1770. this

  1771. glimpse

  1772. of

  1773. Job

  1774. not a

  1775. glimpse

  1776. it's

  1777. there

  1778. Job's

  1779. despair

  1780. and

  1781. then

  1782. in

  1783. chapter

  1784. 14

  1785. verses

  1786. 13

  1787. through

  1788. 17

  1789. just

  1790. a

  1791. glimpse

  1792. of

  1793. Job's

  1794. hope

  1795. and

  1796. then

  1797. at

  1798. the

  1799. end

  1800. of

  1801. this

  1802. chapter

  1803. verses

  1804. 18

  1805. through

  1806. 22

  1807. we're

  1808. back

  1809. at

  1810. Job's

  1811. despair

  1812. and

  1813. I'm

  1814. thinking

  1815. to

  1816. myself

  1817. how

  1818. can

  1819. Job

  1820. leave

  1821. this

  1822. conversation

  1823. so

  1824. hopeless

  1825. !

  1826. There are

  1827. godly men

  1828. on both

  1829. sides

  1830. of this

  1831. I've

  1832. read

  1833. them

  1834. both

  1835. I want

  1836. you to

  1837. consider

  1838. the words

  1839. of an

  1840. Australian

  1841. biblical

  1842. Hebrew

  1843. scholar

  1844. his name

  1845. is

  1846. Francis

  1847. Ian

  1848. Anderson

  1849. he just

  1850. passed

  1851. away

  1852. at the

  1853. beginning

  1854. of

  1855. COVID

  1856. but

  1857. here's

  1858. what

  1859. he

  1860. says

  1861. we

  1862. should

  1863. not

  1864. be

  1865. those

  1866. expecting

  1867. Job

  1868. to

  1869. use

  1870. western

  1871. logic

  1872. in

  1873. constructing

  1874. his

  1875. discourse

  1876. so

  1877. that

  1878. an

  1879. argument

  1880. is

  1881. followed

  1882. through

  1883. step

  1884. by

  1885. step

  1886. until

  1887. the

  1888. result

  1889. is

  1890. reached

  1891. at

  1892. the

  1893. end

  1894. what

  1895. he's

  1896. saying

  1897. is

  1898. guys

  1899. Job

  1900. was

  1901. not

  1902. a

  1903. western

  1904. man

  1905. here

  1906. in

  1907. the

  1908. west

  1909. we

  1910. typically

  1911. think

  1912. our

  1913. logic

  1914. is

  1915. often

  1916. linear

  1917. it

  1918. just

  1919. boom

  1920. boom

  1921. and

  1922. then

  1923. boom

  1924. but

  1925. not

  1926. necessarily

  1927. so

  1928. in

  1929. eastern

  1930. and

  1931. middle

  1932. eastern

  1933. cultures

  1934. and

  1935. so

  1936. he

  1937. continues

  1938. !

  1939. the

  1940. author

  1941. to

  1942. author

  1943. to

  1944. the

  1945. author

  1946. to

  1947. author

  1948. may

  1949. be

  1950. stated

  1951. in

  1952. the

  1953. middle

  1954. of

  1955. a

  1956. poem

  1957. flanked

  1958. before

  1959. and

  1960. after

  1961. by

  1962. contrasting

  1963. opinions

  1964. which

  1965. he

  1966. rejects

  1967. verses

  1968. 14

  1969. through

  1970. 17

  1971. then

  1972. constitute

  1973. the

  1974. high

  1975. point

  1976. of

  1977. the

  1978. speech

  1979. and

  1980. reaffirm

  1981. the

  1982. faith

  1983. already

  1984. expressed

  1985. in

  1986. chapter

  1987. 13

  1988. especially

  1989. in

  1990. verse

  1991. 15

  1992. where

  1993. he

  1994. says

  1995. though

  1996. he

  1997. slay

  1998. me

  1999. I

  2000. will

  2001. hope

  2002. in

  2003. him

  2004. Anderson

  2005. is

  2006. suggesting

  2007. then

  2008. that

  2009. Job

  2010. is

  2011. not

  2012. leaving

  2013. this

  2014. conversation

  2015. in

  2016. deep

  2017. dark

  2018. despair

  2019. and

  2020. that

  2021. misery

  2022. is

  2023. not

  2024. the

  2025. final

  2026. word

  2027. for

  2028. this

  2029. reply

  2030. to

  2031. his

  2032. friends

  2033. Job

  2034. was

  2035. in

  2036. misery

  2037. Job

  2038. was

  2039. in

  2040. despair

  2041. but

  2042. the

  2043. focus

  2044. on

  2045. this

  2046. glimmer

  2047. of

  2048. hope

  2049. that

  2050. shines

  2051. through

  2052. the

  2053. gloomy

  2054. clouds

  2055. this

  2056. hope

  2057. is

  2058. his

  2059. God

  2060. this

  2061. is

  2062. his

  2063. faith

  2064. this

  2065. is

  2066. one

  2067. who

  2068. is

  2069. innocent

  2070. before

  2071. his

  2072. God

  2073. trusting

  2074. that

  2075. his

  2076. God

  2077. is

  2078. going

  2079. to

  2080. do

  2081. what's

  2082. just

  2083. and

  2084. right

  2085. even

  2086. if

  2087. it

  2088. kills

  2089. him

  2090. I

  2091. want

  2092. to

  2093. conclude

  2094. with

  2095. some

  2096. thoughts

  2097. that

  2098. are

  2099. not

  2100. part

  2101. of

  2102. this

  2103. Job

  2104. 12

  2105. 13

  2106. 14

  2107. section

  2108. and

  2109. try

  2110. to

  2111. answer

  2112. this

  2113. question

  2114. how

  2115. is

  2116. the

  2117. Job

  2118. suffering

  2119. so

  2120. badly

  2121. broken

  2122. and crushed

  2123. was able

  2124. to move

  2125. forward

  2126. in this

  2127. struggle

  2128. and so

  2129. we
