  1. Open your Bibles, if you would, to Job chapter 38.

    Job 38 chapter mention

  2. If you're using the Pew Bible, don't have a Bible of your own, I would encourage you to turn there.

  3. It's on page 443, Job 38.

  4. We head into the homestretch, as it were, of our study in the book of Job.

  5. And finally the moment is here.

  6. The moment we've all been waiting for is finally come in Job 38,

  7. where up to this point God has been audibly silent.

  8. We've been learning about the suffering and the silence of God,

  9. and God has been silent to Job, silent to his friends,

  10. at least in an audible way up to this point, and finally God will speak.

  11. We're going to hear his words.

  12. What will he say?

  13. How will he come and address the counsel that's been happening to Job's friends?

  14. How will he address Job's heart and the strugglings and the wrestlings of his heart?

  15. What will he say?

  16. How will God set all the things back in order?

  17. Well, of course, God has not been silent.

  18. And we've seen that throughout the whole book.

  19. And while his voice has not been audible,

  20. it's clear that the truth about God has been present.

  21. We've seen it in the address, the counsel of Job's friends.

  22. We've seen it in Job himself,

  23. as he addresses God and draws truth out of creation.

  24. We've seen it from Elihu and how Elihu will state very true things about God

  25. that he's observed in creation.

  26. And of course, we know that this is the case.

  27. As the psalmist says in Psalm 19, verses 1 to 4,

    Psalms 19:1–4

  28. he says,

  29. Notice all the times where voice and speech and knowledge

  30. and declare and proclaim all of these words that describe the voice of God

  31. that comes through the created order,

  32. the heavens that declare the glory of God.

  33. God can be perceived and truth about God can be known through creation.

  34. It's an accurate picture, an accurate representation of God.

  35. The challenge, though, comes to how we perceive this truth

  36. and how we interpret the truths that can be known through the universe.

  37. So that in Romans chapter 1, we find this in 19 and 20,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  38. What can be known about God is plain to them,

  39. speaking about anyone who has access to creation and the world that God made.

  40. Because God has shown it to them for his invisible attributes,

  41. namely, his eternal power, his divine nature,

  42. have been clearly perceived ever since the creation of the world

  43. in the things that have been made so that they are without excuse.

  44. God has made himself known.

  45. God has declared truth about himself through creation

  46. that is accurate, that is clear, that can be perceived,

  47. that is accessible to us.

  48. The problem, however, is that it's limited by our perspective.

  49. It's limited by the way that we interpret the truths that we perceive.

  50. That while we see God's nature,

  51. while we can experience God's power,

  52. it has to run through a filter, through a grid of our interpretation,

  53. and we make assumptions based upon the truths we see.

  54. So that when Romans 1 goes on,

  55. it helps us understand what the inevitable conclusion is every time without the Scripture.

  56. For although they knew God, it says,

  57. they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him.

  58. But they became futile in their thinking,

  59. and their foolish hearts were darkened.

  60. We're going to see a measure of that as God addresses Job today.

  61. And God says directly to Job,

  62. who is this who darkens counsel?

  63. That's where we're all left,

  64. without the Scripture in front of us.

  65. The way that we interpret the truths

  66. is going to be polluted by our own assumptions about God.

  67. We all know this.

  68. There are, I'm sure, a number of times where you have observed situations,

  69. and you thought you knew the facts,

  70. and you thought you were able to kind of discern what was going on,

  71. but you realize later on that your assumptions were made improperly.

  72. This past Friday night, our family was at a sporting event.

  73. And there was a family sitting just in front and to the left of us,

  74. and three of the members of this family,

  75. a little girl who was seven,

  76. and two young women who were there.

  77. And she was skipping on the tops of the bench that was there,

  78. the bleachers that were there,

  79. hopping from the top to the bottom,

  80. and then on the way to the top.

  81. And I turned to look at the sporting event,

  82. and all of a sudden I hear a thud.

  83. And then I hear a, a cry.

  84. And I turn and look, and here's this little girl.

  85. She's down on the floor of the bleachers,

  86. and she's crying her eyes out.

  87. And the young woman who's sitting next to her says,

  88. will you stop it already?

  89. Will you just be quiet?

  90. That's enough.

  91. And I thought to myself,

  92. wow, that seems a little hard.

  93. What should I do?

  94. Should I intervene?

  95. Should I help to provide some tenderness that's missing?

  96. And what I came to discover over a little bit of time,

  97. in talking to this little girl through the rest of the evening,

  98. is that she is a,

  99. she is one of ten siblings in a family.

  100. And, and so I asked her, you know, the obvious question,

  101. hey, so you're the youngest of ten.

  102. Would you say that you get the most attention or the least attention?

  103. And without hesitation, she said, the most attention.

  104. And I thought to myself, okay, now this makes sense.

  105. She has learned how to manipulate the situation

  106. and to get the attention that she really, really wants.

  107. And she was fine.

  108. And her sister, who was sitting there, older sister,

  109. knew that she was fine,

  110. knew that she was a drama queen,

  111. knew that she often does this to try to get attention.

  112. And just to be, just be quiet.

  113. I've had enough.

  114. And it was a, it was a delightful interchange.

  115. The rest of the evening as she talked our ear off

  116. and we got to know the family a little bit better.

  117. But God has made himself known through creation.

  118. There are things that we can perceive,

  119. truths that we can perceive about God,

  120. but it's limited because we're missing the conversation.

  121. And it wasn't until our family,

  122. I had a conversation with this little girl

  123. that now things began to be clear

  124. and now I was beginning to read things in the right way.

  125. We're going to see through the course of our time this morning

  126. that God is going to show up

  127. and God is going to now begin to set things straight for Job.

  128. He's had a, he's had a lot of things right.

  129. He's declared a lot of truths about God,

  130. but he's come to the wrong conclusions about God.

  131. And now God will finally break the silence

  132. and help to establish who he really is

  133. and help to set the grid by which his creation needs to be understood.

  134. So open up, if you would, if you're not already there,

  135. to Job chapter 38.

    Job 38 chapter mention

  136. We're going to cover this morning,

  137. the plan was to cover chapter 38 and 39,

  138. but my plan is just to cover verses 1 to 3

  139. and then we'll come back to the rest of it next week.

  140. We're just going to lay the foundation for this

  141. and help us understand the framework

  142. for what God is doing.

  143. Maybe review a lot of the complaints that Job had,

  144. kind of catch us up to where we are in this study

  145. so we can really appreciate what God is doing here.

  146. And it's amazing.

  147. Job 38 verses 1 to 3 says this,

    Job 38:1–3

  148. Then the Lord answered.

  149. He answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,

  150. Who is this that darkens counsel

  151. by words without knowledge?

  152. Dress for action like a man

  153. and I will question you

  154. and you make it known to me.

  155. Here at the very beginning,

  156. the Lord will answer Job.

  157. The Lord answered Job.

  158. And in his answer,

  159. in the way that he answers,

  160. we're going to see three very distinct

  161. and very significant things about God.

  162. Things that should encourage all of us

  163. and certainly were a blessing to Job

  164. through the course of this conversation.

  165. That Job answered God

  166. meant that God was present first of all.

  167. First, God is present.

  168. With these opening words,

  169. Then the Lord answered Job.

  170. You can almost sense this sigh of relief.

  171. God is here.

  172. God is present.

  173. God hasn't abandoned me.

  174. God isn't really my enemy

  175. like I thought he was.

  176. God has not pushed me aside.

  177. God has not counted me as unworthy.

  178. God is present.

  179. God is here and God is speaking.

  180. He's answered me.

  181. Almost like a child

  182. who's kind of wandered away in the store

  183. and maybe you've had this experience.

  184. Maybe you've been that kid

  185. or maybe you've been that parent

  186. where you've told your kids

  187. who are younger,

  188. Hey, stay close to me.

  189. Don't move away from where I am.

  190. This is a big store.

  191. There are a lot of people here.

  192. I don't want you to get lost.

  193. But that child,

  194. and maybe it was you,

  195. you saw that thing in the last aisle.

  196. You were passing by with your mom

  197. and it just seemed so enticing.

  198. You know, it had the button

  199. that said touch here

  200. and you didn't get a chance to touch

  201. because it was out of reach

  202. and you just want to go back

  203. and see what touching does.

  204. And so mom's not looking.

  205. She's at the shelves

  206. and you kind of slip away

  207. just briefly and quickly

  208. to go do what you wanted to do

  209. and to touch whatever it was

  210. and to hear that sound

  211. or to see that motion

  212. and then you make your way back

  213. to the first aisle

  214. where your mother was

  215. and now she's missing.

  216. You've been rebellious.

  217. You've been disobedient.

  218. You have done what your mom

  219. said not to do

  220. in leaving her side

  221. and now you know

  222. there will be consequences

  223. because of your disobedience

  224. but it does not matter

  225. because all you want

  226. is to have the presence

  227. of mom again.

  228. And so what do you do?

  229. You cry out,

  230. Mommy, where are you?

  231. Willing to accept

  232. whatever consequences might come

  233. but it doesn't matter

  234. because you need mommy

  235. to be there.

  236. I'm lost.

  237. I'm alone.

  238. But all of that doesn't matter

  239. as long as I have

  240. mommy back in my presence.

  241. And now Job

  242. is finally experiencing

  243. the presence of God again.

  244. And I can,

  245. you can better believe

  246. that Job is feeling

  247. a sense of relief.

  248. Whatever my complaint was,

  249. whatever the answer is,

  250. it really doesn't matter

  251. because God is here.

  252. God is present.

  253. And whatever consequences

  254. will come,

  255. whatever this darkening

  256. of counsel means,

  257. whatever the confrontation

  258. or rebuke will be,

  259. at least God is present here.

  260. At least God has come.

  261. And Job knows

  262. it's going to be

  263. a terrible encounter.

  264. He's stated so much

  265. through the course

  266. of this book.

  267. We've seen back in Job

    Job 9:11

  268. chapter 9 verse 11

  269. and some of the complaints

  270. of Job's heart.

  271. Behold, he says,

  272. he passes by me

  273. and I see him not.

  274. He moves on

  275. but I do not perceive him.

  276. Where is the Lord?

  277. How then can I answer him?

  278. Choosing my words with him.

  279. Though I am in the right,

  280. I cannot answer him.

  281. I must appeal for mercy

  282. to my accuser.

  283. I don't understand

  284. what's going on here.

  285. I used to enjoy

  286. such fellowship with God.

  287. We had sweet communion together.

  288. I worshipped him.

  289. I pointed my family to him.

  290. I enjoyed the blessings from him

  291. and somehow he's distant.

  292. Somehow I feel like

  293. I've become his enemy

  294. and I have no idea

  295. what has happened.

  296. Oh God, just come

  297. and let me know

  298. what's taken place.

  299. I'll fix whatever it is

  300. and then we can get

  301. right on with

  302. how things were.

  303. In Job chapter 13,

    Job 13 chapter mention

  304. he echoes this complaint

  305. in verse 3,

  306. but I would speak

  307. to the Almighty.

  308. I desire to argue

  309. my case with God.

  310. Withdraw your hand from me.

  311. Let not dread of you

  312. terrify me.

  313. Then call

  314. and I will answer

  315. or let me speak

  316. and you reply to me.

  317. How many are my iniquities

  318. and my sins?

  319. Make me know

  320. my transgressions

  321. and my sins.

  322. Why do you hide your face

  323. and count me

  324. as your enemy?

  325. That's really what

  326. this has been about.

  327. It's not necessarily

  328. been about

  329. Job's complaint

  330. about God's injustice,

  331. but it's been about

  332. Job understanding

  333. the justice of God,

  334. but also seeing

  335. the integrity

  336. of his own heart

  337. and the two

  338. he just cannot reconcile.

  339. How can both be true?

  340. If I just speak with God,

  341. he can set the record straight.

  342. He can just tell me

  343. what's going on.

  344. I can make this right.

  345. We can get on

  346. with the way things were.

  347. In Job 23,

  348. I don't have this

  349. in this slide.

  350. Oh, he says,

  351. that I knew

  352. where I might find him,

  353. that I might come

  354. even to his seat.

  355. I would lay my case

  356. before him

  357. and fill my mouth

  358. with arguments.

  359. There an upright man

  360. could argue with him

  361. and I would be acquitted

  362. forever by my judge.

  363. Behold,

  364. I go forward,

  365. but he is not there,

  366. and backward,

  367. but I do not perceive him

  368. on the left hand

  369. when he is working.

  370. I do not behold him.

  371. He turns to the right hand,

  372. but I do not see him,

  373. but he knows

  374. the way I take.

  375. When he has tried me,

  376. I shall come out

  377. as gold.

  378. Therefore,

  379. I am terrified

  380. of his presence

  381. when I consider

  382. I am in dread

  383. of him.

  384. Job understands

  385. that meeting with God

  386. is a fearful venture,

  387. but if that's what it takes

  388. to resolve the issue

  389. between him and God,

  390. it's worth the cost.

  391. More than anything,

  392. Job just wanted

  393. to hear from God.

  394. More than anything,

  395. Job just wanted

  396. to understand

  397. that things were good.

  398. They were cleared.

  399. That he could reconcile

  400. between God

  401. and he could enjoy

  402. that relationship

  403. with him again.

  404. But the counsel

  405. that he was getting

  406. throughout the course

  407. of this book

  408. is a counsel

  409. that would say,

  410. God doesn't care

  411. about you.

  412. God is not going

  413. to show up

  414. and meet with you,

  415. Job.

  416. Eliphaz would say

  417. something along

  418. those lines

  419. in Job chapter 5 verse 1.

    Job 5:1

  420. He says,

  421. Call now.

  422. Is there anyone

  423. who will answer you?

  424. To which of the holy ones

  425. will you turn?

  426. Job,

  427. God doesn't care

  428. about your situation.

  429. God is not going

  430. to answer

  431. your pleas

  432. for meeting

  433. with him.

  434. The only way

  435. that God is going

  436. to meet with you

  437. is if you resolve

  438. the sin in your life

  439. and then maybe

  440. God will entertain

  441. the possibility

  442. of meeting

  443. with you again.

  444. Elihu will say

  445. much the same thing

  446. in Job chapter 35

    Job 35:13

  447. verses 13 and 14.

  448. Surely God

  449. does not hear

  450. an empty cry

  451. nor does the Almighty

  452. regard it

  453. how much less

  454. when you say

  455. that you do not

  456. see him.

  457. That the case

  458. is before him

  459. and you are

  460. waiting for him.

  461. I'm quoting you,

  462. Job.

  463. These are your words.

  464. When you say

  465. that God does not

  466. hear you

  467. and God is not there

  468. how can you imagine

  469. that empty kinds

  470. of cries

  471. are going to elicit

  472. from a response

  473. from God?

  474. And here we are

  475. in Job 38 verse 1.

    Job 38:1

  476. And the Lord answered.

  477. The Lord answered

  478. because

  479. the Lord

  480. delighted in Job.

  481. And the Lord

  482. delights

  483. in answering

  484. the cries

  485. of those

  486. who come to him.

  487. Those who call

  488. on the name

  489. of the Lord

  490. will be saved.

  491. They will be delivered.

  492. They will enjoy

  493. his help.

  494. You see

  495. Eliphaz

  496. didn't speak

  497. for God.

  498. Elihu

  499. didn't speak

  500. for God.

  501. They were both

  502. dead wrong.

  503. And God

  504. shows up

  505. to answer

  506. Job.

  507. And he will hear

  508. and answer

  509. those who call

  510. on him

  511. in humility.

  512. I want to take

  513. just a mini

  514. detour

  515. so you can see

  516. the wonder

  517. of this God

  518. that we serve

  519. from Psalm 107.

  520. It's one of my

  521. favorites.

  522. Who will God

  523. answer?

  524. Who will God

  525. save?

  526. Who will God

  527. deliver?

  528. And we get

  529. snapshots of

  530. four different

  531. groups of individuals

  532. who experience

  533. the delivering

  534. hand of God.

  535. and the

  536. one

  537. similarity

  538. between every

  539. single one

  540. of them

  541. is they

  542. will call

  543. and they

  544. will ask

  545. for help

  546. and God

  547. will deliver.

  548. Notice this

  549. in verse 1.

  550. Oh give thanks

  551. to the Lord

  552. for he is

  553. good.

  554. His steadfast

  555. love endures

  556. forever.

  557. His love

  558. is dependable.

  559. His love

  560. is steady.

  561. His love

  562. can be counted

  563. on.

  564. You can count

  565. on the love

  566. of God.

  567. Here's some

  568. examples

  569. beginning in

  570. verse 4.

  571. Some have

  572. wandered in

  573. the desert

  574. wastes

  575. finding no

  576. way to a

  577. city to dwell

  578. in.

  579. Hungry and

  580. thirsty their

  581. soul fainted

  582. within them.

  583. Then they

  584. cried to the

  585. Lord.

  586. in their

  587. trouble.

  588. And he

  589. delivered them

  590. from their

  591. distress.

  592. He led

  593. them by a

  594. straight way

  595. till they

  596. reached a

  597. city to dwell

  598. in.

  599. Let them

  600. thank the

  601. Lord for

  602. his steadfast

  603. love for

  604. his wondrous

  605. works to the

  606. children of

  607. men.

  608. Then moving

  609. down to

  610. verse 10.

  611. Some sat

  612. in darkness

  613. in the

  614. shadow of

  615. death.

  616. Prisoners

  617. in affliction

  618. in an iron

  619. for they had

  620. rebelled

  621. against the

  622. words of

  623. God and

  624. spurned the

  625. counsel

  626. of the

  627. Most High.

  628. Now do you

  629. get that for

  630. a second?

  631. They're

  632. experiencing the

  633. devastating

  634. consequences of

  635. their own

  636. actions.

  637. They're in

  638. prison.

  639. They're

  640. experiencing

  641. difficulty and

  642. suffering because

  643. of their own

  644. rebellion.

  645. Verse 13,

  646. then they cried

  647. to the Lord in

  648. their trouble.

  649. He delivered

  650. them from

  651. their distress.

  652. He brought

  653. them out of

  654. darkness in

  655. the shadow

  656. of death.

  657. He burst

  658. their bonds

  659. apart.

  660. Let them

  661. thank the

  662. Lord for

  663. his steadfast

  664. love for

  665. his wondrous

  666. works to

  667. the children

  668. of men.

  669. And in

  670. verse 17,

  671. some were

  672. fools through

  673. their sinful

  674. ways and

  675. because of

  676. their iniquities

  677. they suffered

  678. affliction.

  679. They loathed

  680. any kind

  681. of food and

  682. they drew

  683. near to the

  684. gates of

  685. death.

  686. Then they

  687. cried to the

  688. Lord in

  689. their trouble.

  690. He delivered

  691. them from

  692. their distress.

  693. Let them

  694. thank the

  695. Lord for

  696. his steadfast

  697. love for

  698. his wondrous

  699. works to

  700. the children

  701. of men.

  702. And in

  703. verse 23,

  704. some went

  705. down to

  706. the sea and

  707. ships doing

  708. business on

  709. the great

  710. waters.

  711. They saw

  712. the deeds

  713. of the Lord,

  714. his wondrous

  715. works in the

  716. deep.

  717. For he

  718. commanded and

  719. raised the

  720. stormy wind.

  721. I've

  722. underlined that

  723. because that's

  724. the same

  725. word as

  726. the whirlwind

  727. that we see

  728. in our

  729. passage.

  730. Which lifted

  731. up the

  732. waves of

  733. the sea.

  734. They mounted

  735. up to the

  736. heavens.

  737. They went

  738. down to

  739. the depths.

  740. Their

  741. courage

  742. melted

  743. away.

  744. And in

  745. their evil

  746. plight,

  747. then they

  748. cried to

  749. the Lord

  750. in their

  751. trouble.

  752. He

  753. delivered

  754. them from

  755. their

  756. distress.

  757. Let

  758. them

  759. thank the

  760. Lord for

  761. his steadfast

  762. love,

  763. for his

  764. wondrous

  765. works to

  766. the children

  767. of men.

  768. God delights

  769. in answering

  770. the prayers

  771. of those who

  772. cry.

  773. He delights

  774. in the

  775. humility of

  776. those who

  777. will recognize

  778. the desperation

  779. of their need

  780. and they turn

  781. to God and

  782. say,

  783. save me,

  784. deliver me,

  785. help me.

  786. And the

  787. greatest

  788. deliverance we

  789. need,

  790. of course,

  791. is the

  792. deliverance

  793. from sin

  794. and God

  795. sent his

  796. son Jesus

  797. to deal

  798. with that

  799. on the

  800. cross so

  801. that those

  802. who ask

  803. forgiveness

  804. for their

  805. sin and

  806. believe that

  807. he died

  808. and rose

  809. again can

  810. enjoy the

  811. benefits of

  812. forgiveness

  813. in salvation

  814. and deliverance.

  815. So we find

  816. from Romans

    Romans 10:9–13

  817. chapter 10

  818. verses 9

  819. to 13

  820. where it

  821. says,

  822. because if

  823. you confess

  824. with your

  825. mouth that

  826. Jesus is

  827. Lord and

  828. believe in

  829. your heart

  830. that God

  831. raised him

  832. from the

  833. dead,

  834. you will

  835. be saved.

  836. For the

  837. heart one

  838. believes in

  839. is justified

  840. and with

  841. the mouth

  842. one confesses

  843. and is saved.

  844. For the

  845. scripture says,

  846. everyone who

  847. believes in

  848. him will

  849. not be put

  850. to shame.

  851. There is no

  852. distinction

  853. between Jew

  854. and Greek.

  855. For the

  856. same Lord

  857. is Lord

  858. of all,

  859. bestowing

  860. his riches

  861. on all

  862. who call

  863. on him.

  864. For everyone

  865. who calls

  866. on the

  867. name of

  868. the Lord

  869. will be

  870. saved.

  871. Do you

  872. need

  873. deliverance

  874. this morning?

  875. The greatest

  876. deliverance

  877. you could

  878. ever need

  879. is deliverance

  880. of the

  881. bondage

  882. of sin

  883. in your

  884. life.

  885. It's the

  886. forgiveness

  887. and cleansing

  888. that comes

  889. from God

  890. through

  891. belief

  892. in his

  893. son Jesus

  894. Christ.

  895. And the

  896. deliverance

  897. that God

  898. gives is

  899. not deliverance

  900. always from

  901. the struggles

  902. that you

  903. face,

  904. but it's

  905. always a

  906. struggle.

  907. It's the

  908. deliverance

  909. that he

  910. gives,

  911. the peace

  912. that passes

  913. understanding

  914. and the

  915. strength that

  916. God delivers

  917. to carry us

  918. through the

  919. trials that

  920. we face.

  921. And an

  922. awareness of

  923. the fact that

  924. God is

  925. present in

  926. our life.

  927. Even when

  928. he seems

  929. so distant

  930. that God

  931. is there,

  932. he delights

  933. in answering

  934. those who

  935. call on

  936. him because

  937. he's present.

  938. Well,

  939. God is also

  940. powerful,

  941. not just

  942. present,

  943. that God

  944. is powerful.

  945. The Lord

  946. answered Job

  947. out of the

  948. whirlwind and

  949. said,

  950. Who is this

  951. that darkens

  952. counsel by

  953. words without

  954. knowledge?

  955. The fact that

  956. God shows up

  957. in this

  958. whirlwind is

  959. to establish

  960. emphatically

  961. that he is

  962. a God that

  963. cannot be

  964. trifled with.

  965. He's a God

  966. of unstoppable

  967. power.

  968. He comes to

  969. Job in this

  970. whirlwind

  971. to help

  972. him

  973. recognize

  974. that God

  975. is a

  976. force.

  977. And of

  978. course,

  979. Job

  980. understood

  981. the force

  982. and the

  983. power

  984. and the

  985. supremacy

  986. of God.

  987. But he's

  988. reminded now

  989. again of

  990. God's

  991. power in

  992. the whirlwind.

  993. We'll see

  994. this again in

  995. Job 40

    Job 40:6

  996. verses 6

  997. and 7.

  998. Next week,

  999. the Lord

  1000. answered Job

  1001. out of a

  1002. whirlwind and

  1003. said,

  1004. Dress for

  1005. action like a

  1006. man.

  1007. I will

  1008. question you

  1009. and you

  1010. make it

  1011. known to

  1012. me.

  1013. Well,

  1014. why a

  1015. whirlwind?

  1016. It's a

  1017. way to

  1018. arrest

  1019. Job's

  1020. attention.

  1021. It's a

  1022. way for

  1023. him to

  1024. recognize

  1025. again in

  1026. a very

  1027. visual way

  1028. that God

  1029. is in

  1030. charge,

  1031. that God

  1032. is powerful.

  1033. But so

  1034. often throughout

  1035. the Old

  1036. Testament

  1037. especially,

  1038. we see that

  1039. God shows

  1040. up in this

  1041. way to

  1042. show the

  1043. unstoppable

  1044. nature of

  1045. his power.

  1046. we see it

  1047. in Isaiah

    Isaiah 29:5–7

  1048. chapter 29

  1049. verses 5

  1050. to 7

  1051. where the

  1052. nation of

  1053. Israel,

  1054. Jerusalem in

  1055. particular,

  1056. they're under

  1057. siege and

  1058. these powerful

  1059. nations are

  1060. coming against

  1061. them and

  1062. from a human

  1063. standpoint,

  1064. there was no

  1065. answer,

  1066. there was no

  1067. solution,

  1068. there was no

  1069. helper,

  1070. but God shows

  1071. up through the

  1072. prophet Isaiah

  1073. to say,

  1074. I am a

  1075. helper and

  1076. I'm going to

  1077. show you how

  1078. this is going

  1079. to happen.

  1080. The multitude

  1081. of your foreign

  1082. foes shall be

  1083. like a small

  1084. dust,

  1085. the multitude

  1086. of the ruthless

  1087. like passing

  1088. chaff,

  1089. in an instant

  1090. suddenly you

  1091. will be visited

  1092. by the Lord

  1093. of hosts with

  1094. thunder and

  1095. earthquakes and

  1096. a great noise,

  1097. with a whirlwind

  1098. and a tempest

  1099. and flame and

  1100. devouring fire,

  1101. and the multitude

  1102. of all the nations

  1103. that fight against

  1104. Ariel,

  1105. that's another word

  1106. for Jerusalem,

  1107. all that fight

  1108. against her

  1109. and her stronghold

  1110. and distress her

  1111. shall be like

  1112. a dream,

  1113. like a vision

  1114. of a night,

  1115. like nothing,

  1116. nothing before

  1117. the power of

  1118. God represented

  1119. by Isaiah

  1120. as an earthquake

  1121. and a fire

  1122. and this tempest

  1123. or whirlwind,

  1124. this unstoppable

  1125. power

  1126. is a way for

  1127. God to

  1128. demonstrate through

  1129. even the

  1130. physical world

  1131. that Job and

  1132. his friends have

  1133. been drawing

  1134. from the

  1135. nature of

  1136. God that

  1137. has become

  1138. clear to

  1139. them,

  1140. is now showing

  1141. up and

  1142. represented once

  1143. again by

  1144. power in

  1145. this whirlwind.

  1146. It reminds us

  1147. as well that

  1148. grace is cheap

  1149. without a proper

  1150. understanding or

  1151. fear of God.

  1152. This tempest,

  1153. if you've ever

  1154. been in a

  1155. situation,

  1156. maybe even a

  1157. tornado,

  1158. I remember as a

  1159. young child

  1160. and just moving

  1161. to Ohio

  1162. too.

  1163. And growing

  1164. up in

  1165. Cedarville,

  1166. it had a

  1167. reputation just

  1168. a couple of

  1169. years before

  1170. of this huge

  1171. tornado that

  1172. came through

  1173. and did

  1174. massive devastation.

  1175. And as a

  1176. six-year-old

  1177. boy, I was

  1178. terrified of

  1179. the tempest.

  1180. I had a hard

  1181. time getting to

  1182. sleep at night

  1183. because of the

  1184. power of a

  1185. tornado and the

  1186. whirlwind as it

  1187. were.

  1188. And God

  1189. reminds us

  1190. through this

  1191. whirlwind that

  1192. the grace that

  1193. he offers to

  1194. us is cheap

  1195. unless we

  1196. understand his

  1197. power, unless

  1198. we stand in

  1199. reverence in

  1200. fear of him.

  1201. Job will even

  1202. say in chapter

  1203. 9 verse 15,

  1204. though I am in

  1205. the right, I

  1206. cannot answer

  1207. him.

  1208. I must appeal

  1209. for mercy to

  1210. my accuser.

  1211. He recognizes

  1212. that he stands

  1213. in reverence to

  1214. God and he is

  1215. pleading for

  1216. mercy.

  1217. You see, we

  1218. must never lose

  1219. sight of the

  1220. glory of God.

  1221. We must never

  1222. make God

  1223. common and

  1224. that's what the

  1225. writer to the

  1226. Hebrews is

  1227. constantly referring

  1228. to.

  1229. How through our

  1230. sin and through

  1231. our disobedience,

  1232. we bring God

  1233. down.

  1234. We make him

  1235. common.

  1236. It's okay, I

  1237. can offend him,

  1238. he's just like

  1239. anyone else.

  1240. Maybe that's not

  1241. what we say in

  1242. our hearts, but

  1243. that's essentially

  1244. what we are

  1245. affirming through

  1246. our actions.

  1247. Job understood

  1248. the fear of

  1249. God.

  1250. He understood

  1251. the terror of

  1252. standing before

  1253. him.

  1254. He understood

  1255. the mercy and

  1256. the grace of

  1257. God's presence and

  1258. that's what he was

  1259. appealing to.

  1260. And finally here,

  1261. God is wise.

  1262. God is present.

  1263. God is powerful.

  1264. God is wise.

  1265. God is wise.

  1266. Again, in verse

  1267. 1, the Lord

  1268. answered Job out

  1269. of the whirlwind

  1270. and said,

  1271. Who is this that

  1272. darkens counsel by

  1273. words without

  1274. knowledge?

  1275. Who do you think

  1276. you are, Job?

  1277. The knowledge you've

1278. had about me is so

  1279. convoluted.

  1280. You're speaking

  1281. ignorantly.

  1282. And Job understood

  1283. the significance of

  1284. God's wisdom.

  1285. He appeals to that

  1286. in Job 28,

    Job 28:28

  1287. verse 28,

  1288. when he says

  1289. this,

  1290. he said to

  1291. man,

  1292. Behold the fear

  1293. of the Lord.

  1294. That is wisdom.

  1295. And to turn away

  1296. from evil is

  1297. understanding.

  1298. He understood and

  1299. grasped some

  1300. aspects of this.

  1301. But there are also

  1302. times in Job's life

  1303. where he couldn't

  1304. compute, he couldn't

  1305. put the pieces

  1306. together and so he

  1307. made assumptions

  1308. about God that

  1309. weren't true.

  1310. There are a number

  1311. of references

  1312. throughout the

  1313. book of Job that

  1314. draw on this

  1315. illusion of light

  1316. and darkness.

  1317. Light that appeals

  1318. or refers to

  1319. clarity and truth

  1320. and darkness that

  1321. refers to ignorance

  1322. and blindness to

  1323. the truth that's in

  1324. front of them.

  1325. In Job 12,

    Job 12:22

  1326. verse 22,

  1327. Job says,

  1328. He uncovers deep

  1329. things out of

  1330. darkness.

  1331. He brings the

  1332. shadow of death

  1333. to life.

  1334. Light.

  1335. He takes away the

  1336. understanding of

  1337. the chiefs, of

  1338. the people.

  1339. They grope in the

  1340. dark without light.

  1341. Job understood the

  1342. significance of

  1343. getting wisdom from

  1344. God.

  1345. He desired to have

  1346. that wisdom.

  1347. He knew there was

  1348. a difference between

  1349. light and darkness.

  1350. And while he

  1351. understood some

  1352. things about God,

  1353. there were some

  1354. gaps in his

  1355. understanding.

  1356. They've been

  1357. concealed from him.

  1358. He had spoken in

  1359. ignorance.

1360. He tried to put the

  1361. pieces together, but

  1362. he made the wrong

  1363. assumptions.

  1364. He was limited.

  1365. He was limited

  1366. because he didn't

  1367. have access to the

  1368. special revelation,

  1369. the word of God

  1370. that we have access

  1371. to.

1372. And so while he was

  1373. trying to reconcile

  1374. the justice of God,

  1375. he didn't have a

  1376. category for life

  1377. after death.

  1378. And so in his

  1379. mind, he thought

  1380. the justice of God

  1381. needed to be meted

  1382. out in the here

  1383. and now.

  1384. And so if wicked

  1385. people prosper and

  1386. righteous people

  1387. suffer, how can that

  1388. equate and compare

  1389. with God's justice?

  1390. He had no category

  1391. for life after death.

  1392. And interestingly,

  1393. there is no mention

  1394. by Job or even

  1395. Job's friends of

  1396. Satan.

  1397. They had no concept

  1398. of an adversary,

  1399. the devil, who is

  1400. coming against God's

  1401. plans and seeking

  1402. to undermine God's

  1403. good things.

  1404. While they knew

  1405. about angels,

  1406. they seemed to be

  1407. oblivious to Satan

  1408. and his part in

  1409. all of these things.

  1410. And so they assign

  1411. the suffering to God

  1412. instead of seeing

  1413. that it's coming

  1414. through the avenue

  1415. of Satan and

  1416. seeking to undo

  1417. God's plans.

  1418. And of course,

  1419. God is ultimately

  1420. in control.

  1421. in Job chapter 2

    Job 2:3

  1422. verse 3, God in

  1423. speaking with Satan

  1424. says, Job still

  1425. holds fast his

  1426. integrity.

  1427. Although you,

  1428. Satan, have incited

  1429. me against him to

  1430. destroy him without

  1431. reason.

  1432. God is ultimately

  1433. responsible.

  1434. He's the one who

  1435. permits Satan to do

  1436. his thing.

1437. But Satan is the one

  1438. who is coming after

  1439. Job.

  1440. Satan is the one

  1441. who is unleashing

  1442. this suffering on

  1443. Job.

  1444. But Job doesn't

  1445. understand this.

  1446. And so in Job

    Job 6:4

  1447. chapter 6 verse 4,

  1448. he says,

  1449. The arrows of the

  1450. Almighty are in me.

  1451. My spirit drinks

  1452. their poison.

  1453. The terrors of God

  1454. are arrayed against

  1455. me.

  1456. In Job chapter 9

    Job 9:17

  1457. verse 17, he says,

  1458. For he, speaking of

  1459. the Lord, crushes me

  1460. with a tempest and

  1461. multiplies my wounds

  1462. without cause.

  1463. In Job 19 verse 6,

    Job 19:6

  1464. 8 and 22, he says,

  1465. God has wronged me.

1466. He has fenced up my

  1467. way.

1468. He has stripped me of

  1469. glory.

1470. He breaks me down on

  1471. every side.

  1472. He has kindled his

  1473. wrath against me.

1474. He counts me as one of

  1475. his enemies.

1476. The hand of God has

  1477. struck me.

  1478. And Job, of course,

  1479. was wrong.

  1480. He speaks ignorantly.

  1481. He's trying to derive

  1482. the truths that he

  1483. knows about his own

  1484. suffering and he

  1485. doesn't recognize the

  1486. parts that he's not,

  1487. that he's missing.

  1488. Of course, God has

1489. given to us his word.

1490. And in Psalm 19, God

1491. has not only given us

  1492. the words of himself

  1493. through the heavens,

  1494. the heavens declaring

1495. the glory of God, but

1496. the rest of the Psalm

  1497. speaks about the wonder

  1498. of the scriptures that

  1499. we have.

1500. The law of the Lord is

  1501. perfect, reviving the

  1502. soul.

  1503. The testimony of the

  1504. Lord is sure, making

  1505. wise the simple.

  1506. The precepts of the

  1507. Lord are right, rejoicing

  1508. the heart.

  1509. The commandment of the

  1510. Lord is pure, enlightening

  1511. the eyes.

1512. The fear of the Lord is

  1513. clean, enduring forever.

1514. The rules of the Lord are

  1515. true and righteous

  1516. altogether.

1517. More to be desired are

1518. they than gold, even much

  1519. fine gold.

  1520. Sweeter also than

  1521. honey and drippings of

  1522. the honeycomb.

  1523. Moreover, by them is

  1524. your servant warned.

  1525. In keeping them, there

  1526. is great reward.

1527. The word of God now

  1528. becomes the compass that

  1529. we can understand the

  1530. revelation of God

  1531. through creation.

  1532. We can begin to

  1533. interpret it and

  1534. understand it accurately.

1535. And God has given to us

  1536. his word.

  1537. Lord, we have the

  1538. completed revelation of

1539. the word of God that we

1540. have access to every day.

1541. I trust and pray that you

1542. are allowing your heart to

  1543. be encouraged, refined,

  1544. and directed through the

1545. words of God day by day.

1546. As God ministers to you and

  1547. fellowships with you through

  1548. the scriptures.

  1549. And finally, we'll come

1550. back to this next week and

1551. try to fill this out some

  1552. more.

1553. Not only does the Lord

1554. answer Job, but we see

  1555. that the Lord questions

  1556. Job.

  1557. The Lord questions Job.

1558. We'll see that in the

  1559. remaining parts of chapter

  1560. 38 and in chapter 39 and

  1561. 40 and 41.

  1562. And what's fascinating

1563. about the way that the

1564. Lord questions Job is how

  1565. he does it.

1566. How will God now that he

  1567. finally speaks, how will

  1568. God finally address Job's

  1569. situation?

  1570. How will God finally

  1571. resolve the conflict that

1572. Job has in his heart?

1573. How will God help to

  1574. clarify the confusion that

  1575. Job had?

1576. And God says in verse 3,

1577. dressed for action like a

  1578. man.

1579. I will question you and you

1580. make it known to me.

  1581. God begins by establishing

  1582. who the authority is.

1583. God begins by helping Job to

  1584. understand his rightful place.

1585. not as one who has the

1586. right to challenge God, but

1587. as the one who is a subject

1588. of God who is over all.

1589. And Job is referred to God

  1590. throughout this book as

1591. Shaddai, the one who is

  1592. over all creation.

1593. And God wants Job to be

  1594. reminded of the fact,

1595. remember who your creator is.

1596. Remember who the one who has

1597. the right to ask questions is

1598. and let that settle your own

  1599. heart.

1600. I just want to read a few

  1601. pieces of this.

1602. See if you can begin to hear

1603. the answer that God gives to

  1604. Job about his situation.

  1605. Verse 4.

1606. Where were you when I laid the

  1607. foundation of the earth?

1608. Tell me if you have

  1609. understanding.

  1610. Who determined its

  1611. measurements?

  1612. Surely you know.

1613. Or who stretched the line

  1614. upon it?

1615. On what were its bases sunk?

1616. Or who laid its cornerstone?

1617. When the morning stars sang

1618. together and all the sons of

  1619. God shouted for joy?

  1620. Verse 8.

1621. Who shut in the seas with the

1622. doors when it burst out from

  1623. the womb?

  1624. Verse 12.

1625. Have you commanded the morning

1626. since your days began and

1627. caused the dawn to know its

  1628. place?

  1629. Verse 16.

1630. Have you entered into the

1631. springs of the sea or walked

1632. in the recesses of the deep?

  1633. Verse 19.

1634. Where is the way to the

  1635. dwelling of light?

1636. Where is the place of

  1637. darkness?

  1638. Verse 22.

  1639. Have you entered the

1640. storehouse of the snow or

1641. have you seen the storehouse

  1642. of the hail?

  1643. Verse 25.

1644. Who has cleft a channel for

1645. the torrents of rain and a

  1646. way for the thunderbolt?

  1647. Verse 28.

1648. Has the rain a father?

1649. Or who has begotten the

  1650. drops of dew?

  1651. Verse 31.

1652. Can you bind the chains of

1653. the chains of Pleiades or

  1654. loose the cords of

  1655. Orion?

1656. Can you lead forth the

  1657. mazeroth, which is another

  1658. word for constellations, in

  1659. their season?

1660. Or can you guide the bear with

  1661. its children?

  1662. Verse 34.

1663. Can you lift up your voice to

1664. the clouds that a flood of

  1665. waters may cover you?

  1666. Verse 41.

1667. Who provided for the raven its

1668. prey when its young ones cry

1669. to God for help and wander

1670. about for lack of food?

  1671. What is the answer?

1672. How does God begin to answer

  1673. Job's question?

  1674. What's fascinating about this

  1675. whole discourse that we're

1676. going to see from chapters 38

1677. to 41 is God will not give

  1678. Job any new revelation.

1679. God will tell Job exactly the

1680. things that Job has already

1681. affirmed about who God is.

  1682. He is sovereign.

  1683. He is just.

  1684. He is benevolent.

  1685. He is over all.

1686. He is the one who guides and

  1687. governs.

1688. He is wise and strong.

1689. All of these things that Job has

1690. already given assent to, God

  1691. will confirm through this

  1692. speech.

1693. There is nothing in this

1694. speech from God that Job

  1695. doesn't already know.

1696. That's really amazing to me.

1697. You see, Job already had what

  1698. he needed.

1699. Job had access to revelation

1700. and Job had drawn out from

1701. creation those truths and those

1702. truths were enough to help Job

  1703. through this situation.

1704. Essentially, to summarize and to

1705. kind of pull it all together, God's

  1706. like, I am creator.

  1707. I am not destroyer.

1708. I am a God of benevolence in care.

1709. I take care of my creatures.

1710. I do not crush them.

1711. I am a God of order and design.

  1712. I'm not a God of chaos.

  1713. I'm a God of wisdom.

1714. I'm not a God who can be trifled

  1715. with.

  1716. You can be challenged.

1717. I am the God who is overall.

1718. I am sovereign and ultimate.

1719. And you can trust me, Job.

1720. There's nothing about what God

1721. says that Job didn't already know.

1722. And that, by the way, is the issue

  1723. for all of us.

1724. There are things that we know about

1725. God and we can't accuse God of leading

1726. us into sin when he's already revealed

1727. himself to us through his word.

1728. And that every disobedience of our life

1729. is a result of a lack of faith,

1730. not a lack of knowledge.

1731. Let me just give you a couple examples

  1732. as I close.

1733. To the one who struggles with lust,

1734. God is the one who takes care of your needs.

1735. The one who struggles with stealing,

1736. God is the one who provides.

1737. You can trust him to take care of your needs.

1738. To the one who is often afraid,

1739. God is the one who delivers.

1740. God is the one who is in control.

1741. God is the one who is strong.

1742. To the one who struggles with jealousy,

1743. God has made me in his image.

1744. And God has made me the way he wants me to be

1745. and he desires to use those things

  1746. according to his purpose.

1747. And I don't need to be jealous of other

  1748. people's gifts.

1749. For those who dishonor their parents,

1750. we understand that we're not at the top

  1751. of the pile.

1752. That God is the one who is ultimate.

  1753. For those who lie,

1754. we know that God knows it all.

1755. God is not disguised and we are exposed

  1756. to him.

  1757. He's not limited.

1758. For those who feel at the end of themselves,

1759. we recognize that God's yoke is easy,

  1760. his burden is light,

1761. and he just desires for us to entrust

1762. our anxieties and our pressures to him,

1763. to cast all your cares upon him

1764. because he cares for you.

1765. We know those things to be true,

1766. and so when we wrestle with anxiety

  1767. in fear,

  1768. in lust,

  1769. in lying,

  1770. in jealousy,

  1771. in bitterness,

  1772. in frustration,

  1773. in anger,

  1774. whatever it is,

1775. it is not a deficiency of knowledge

1776. but a deficiency of faith.

  1777. And that's what I believe

1778. God is doing for Job.

  1779. You know these truths.

  1780. Put them to work.

  1781. Trust me.

  1782. I am these things.

1783. And you can rest in those truths.

1784. And God wants us to do the same.

1785. And when we feel at the end of ourselves,

1786. and I trust we feel that often,

1787. that is a gift to us.

1788. And so in that wrestling with God

1789. where we feel like we're at the end of ourselves,

1790. it is a gift to us

1791. to point us to dependence on him.

1792. Oh may God help us to do

1793. what the folks in Psalm 107 did,

  1794. and that is

1795. that we cry out to the Lord

  1796. and he delivers us

  1797. and helps to answer

1798. those struggles that we face.

  1799. Let me pray.

1800. Lord, thank you for your steadfast love.

  1801. That loyal, dependable love

  1802. in your presence

  1803. and your power

  1804. and for your wisdom.

1805. And Lord, I pray that you would help us

1806. to put our confidence in that.

  1807. Whatever the situation is

  1808. that we're facing

1809. and that we would see

  1810. that you are

1811. who you say you are.

  1812. You are wise.

  1813. You are sovereign.

  1814. You are strong.

  1815. You are in control.

1816. And we can trust you.

1817. May our lives reflect the truths

1818. that we say we believe in.

1819. And may they show up from day to day.

1820. So the world around us says,

1821. I want to know your God.

1822. May that be true of us,

1823. I pray in Jesus' name.

  1824. Amen.

  1825. God bless you.

  1826. Have a great week.
