  1. Well, good morning.

  2. Open up with me, if you would, to Colossians.

  3. Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  4. If you're using the Pew Bible, it's on page 983.

  5. I kind of wondered where we were going to go in kind of our next sermon series that we're working through.

  6. And having worked through the book of Job this summer,

  7. I'm going to move to the New Testament and kind of pick up the pace, as it were,

  8. in terms of understanding the significance of thanks in prayer.

  9. The significance of thanks in prayer.

  10. Many of you have probably heard about the name D.L. Moody

  11. and what God was able to accomplish through his life in ministry back in the 1800s.

  12. But many of you may not be aware of kind of the humble beginnings of D.L. Moody

  13. and how unexpected really his time of ministry really would have been,

  14. considering where he came from.

  15. D.L. Moody dropped out of school when he was 13 years old.

  16. But he ended up being used by God to inspire students at Cambridge throughout his life in ministry.

  17. D.L. Moody, when he got started, preferred to teach children.

  18. He understood and appreciated the receptivity of their hearts.

  19. And so his focus early on in his ministry was Sunday school ministry to children.

  20. And yet God would use him then to speak to crowds of individuals,

  21. numbering in the thousands, men and women, boys and girls.

  22. And God would use this man in a mighty way.

  23. He was a man who grew up in a farm in Massachusetts.

  24. He came from very meager beginnings, a poverty-stricken family,

  25. a mother who was devout to Jesus, a father who was an alcoholic.

  26. His early life he was one who was given to money, had a love for money,

  27. but the Lord kind of changed his perspective.

  28. And while he was in Chicago wanting to make as much money as he could,

  29. he would be this up-and-coming businessman,

  30. God worked in his heart to change his life

  31. and help him understand the significance of gospel ministry.

  32. He was a man who was led to Christ at age 17 by a man by the name of Edward Kimball.

  33. Kind of a guy in the middle of obscurity,

  34. but used by the Lord through faithful ministry of this man.

  35. Moody would build a foundation of evangelistic crusades

  36. and thousands of people would come

  37. and the newscasters and the media who would show up to these events

  38. were just awestruck at the fact that

  39. how do so many people assemble

  40. when the person up front is speaking at a fourth-grade level?

  41. The ministry of the Word of God that was working and moving through D.L. Moody

  42. and his frailty, his humility, and his dependence on the Lord.

  43. It was while D.L. Moody was in England

  44. and he was there under the ministry of an individual named Henry Varley.

  45. And in that message, Henry Varley would say,

  46. the world has yet to see what God can do

  47. through a man who has totally yielded to him.

  48. And those words inspired D.L. Moody

  49. and he wondered, can I be that man?

  50. Can God use this meager man

  51. to make much of himself in terms of ministry?

  52. And by God's grace, I will be that man.

  53. And so when he died in December of 1899,

  54. thousands of people would come

  55. not to celebrate the one who had fashioned an empire,

  56. who had made lots of money,

  57. but one who had devoted himself entirely to the Lord

  58. and had been used by God in significant ways.

  59. His life really is a clear testimony of what God can do

  60. in the life of an individual, a man or a woman,

  61. who commits themselves,

  62. devotes themselves to faith and prayer,

  63. to thanks and prayer.

  64. And over the course of the next three months,

  65. that's where we're going to go.

  66. That's what we're going to focus on and concentrate on

  67. as we come to the book of Colossians,

  68. this little letter,

  69. and thanks and prayer kind of permeate their way

  70. through this little letter.

  71. And it's my prayer that if God can do this

  72. in the life of an individual,

  73. what might God be able to do

  74. in the life of a congregation,

  75. a life of a people,

  76. a life of a body of individuals

  77. who have joined themselves to this objective.

  78. And I trust, I'm praying,

  79. I want to encourage you for the next three months

  80. that in some way we devote ourselves

  81. to understanding what a life of prayer and thanks looks like

  82. and that we grow in some measure

  83. in embracing these disciplines to ourselves.

  84. I want to propose an experiment, as it were.

  85. I want to see what God might do in my life,

  86. what God might see,

  87. what might do in our church,

  88. what God might do in your community,

  89. in your workplace, in students,

  90. what God might do in your schools,

  91. in your co-ops,

  92. in your home school communities,

  93. wherever you might be.

  94. What might God be able to do

  95. with the people that have devoted themselves

  96. to thanks and prayer?

  97. So for the next three months,

  98. I want to encourage us to commit ourselves

  99. to that in some way.

  100. And as a way to go about that,

  101. we've put together another study guide.

  102. Okay, and I know that we've done this a lot,

  103. but I want, I'm trusting, hoping, praying

  104. that this would be an invitation for us

  105. to participate together.

  106. As you look through the New Testament,

  107. you see that the churches that flourish,

  108. that the churches that God uses mightily and powerfully

  109. are the ones that have one heart,

  110. one mind, one spirit.

  111. And so this is a way for us to come together

  112. in a united way,

  113. to learn what God says,

  114. and to embrace this for ourselves,

  115. for to be part of the conversation of one another,

  116. this fellowship for one another,

  117. encouragement, challenging,

  118. and embracing this together as a group.

  119. So I want to encourage you,

  120. I know that several of you are part of Bible studies,

  121. I know that several of you are part of small groups,

  122. I know that several of you have your own Bible reading plans,

  123. and so this is an extra,

  124. but I'm just inviting you to step in in a little way,

  125. maybe step in all the way to embrace this together

  126. so we can see what God might be able to do.

  127. At the end of each of the week's lessons in the study guide,

  128. I put together something called the family corner,

  129. and here's a graphic of that family corner.

  130. And all we're trying to do is have some simple questions

  131. that kids of every age can answer

  132. and invite them to think about the text in a way

  133. that is familiar,

  134. that's accessible for them,

  135. so you can start this family conversation.

  136. It's meant to be a conversation starter.

  137. So even your entire family,

  138. all the way down to your toddlers,

  139. can be a part of this study together

  140. as we're making our way through the scriptures.

  141. And I want to also encourage,

  142. I've put a key verse or two each week,

  143. I want to encourage us as a church

  144. to be memorizing God's word.

  145. And there may be some of you

  146. who might rise to the occasion

  147. in memorizing the book.

  148. Would some of you be willing to try to do that?

  149. Memorize, and especially young people,

  150. your minds are sharp,

  151. memorizing the book of Colossians.

  152. There are 95 verses,

  153. and there's 110 days between now and Christmas

  154. that we can do this.

  155. So just a verse a day.

  156. You can have some cheat days,

  157. because there's some days extra

  158. that you can do this.

  159. And this is something I want to encourage us to do

  160. as a fellowship.

  161. Verse one.

  162. Paul, an apostle,

  163. and I'm going to say this,

  164. and you're going to repeat it after me.

  165. Okay?

  166. So, Paul, an apostle.

  167. Paul, an apostle.

  168. By the will of Christ Jesus.

  169. By the will of Christ Jesus.

  170. Excuse me.

  171. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus.

  172. By the will of God.

  173. So let's try that again.

  174. We're learning it together.

  175. That's okay.

  176. That's okay.

  177. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus.

  178. Okay?

  179. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus.

  180. By the will of God.

  181. By the will of God.

  182. And Timothy, our brother.

  183. And Timothy, our brother.

  184. Hey, look.

  185. You got verse one.

  186. It's there.

  187. It's locked away.

  188. You can coast the rest of the day

  189. and pick it up tomorrow.

  190. So here we go.

  191. We can do this together.

  192. And I believe this will be

  193. a strategic exercise

  194. for our fellowship.

  195. I don't know about you,

  196. but if there are two disciplines

  197. that I struggle in the most,

  198. it's the discipline of prayer

  199. and making sure that it's consistent

  200. and making sure that it's happening

  201. faithfully, regularly, day by day.

  202. And the discipline of thanksgiving.

  203. I'm much more inclined

  204. to look at the dark side of life

  205. and say, ah!

  206. It's terrible!

  207. Ah!

  208. Look at what's happening to me!

  209. Oh!

  210. It woes me!

  211. It's so awful!

  212. And the practice of thanksgiving

  213. in helping to call attention

  214. to the work of God

  215. even in hard things.

  216. Even when things don't go your way,

  217. this is going to be good for us.

  218. And I just want to encourage us

  219. as a fellowship

  220. for the next three months.

  221. Can we do this together?

  222. That's my prayer.

  223. That's my goal.

  224. And here's the promise.

  225. The promise that's contained

  226. in this passage this morning

  227. is Paul will talk about

  228. the word of truth,

  229. the gospel that's come to them.

  230. And listen to what happens

  231. when the word of God comes.

  232. It has come to you

  233. and it's come to a whole world.

  234. It is bearing fruit

  235. and increasing

  236. as it does among you

  237. since the day you heard

  238. and understood

  239. the grace of God and truth.

  240. God's word will

  241. have its way.

  242. God's word will

  243. make a difference.

  244. God's word will change us

  245. if we surrender to it

  246. and come to know it.

  247. And God delights

  248. in that work.

  249. And I trust

  250. that as we're doing this together

  251. over the next three months,

  252. we're going to see

  253. the evidence

  254. in our own lives,

  255. in the spheres

  256. in which we are,

  257. and as a congregation,

  258. how God can use

  259. his word to change us.

  260. Thanks and prayer.

  261. All right.

  262. Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  263. I think page 983,

  264. if you're there,

  265. in the Pew Bible.

  266. I'm just going to read

  267. the first couple of verses

  268. as an introduction,

  269. and we're going to see

  270. here in just the outset

  271. of this passage,

  272. Paul will set forth

  273. an example.

  274. We're going to see

  275. Paul's example

  276. kind of shining through.

  277. Just even in his

  278. opening introduction,

  279. what is Paul's example?

  280. What is he calling

  281. the people of this church to?

  282. Notice he says,

  283. an apostle

  284. of Christ Jesus

  285. by the will of God,

  286. and Timothy,

  287. our brother,

  288. to the saints

  289. and faithful brothers

  290. in Christ

  291. at Colossae,

  292. grace to you

  293. and peace

  294. from God,

  295. our Father.

  296. Paul,

  297. an apostle.

  298. Paul was sent.

  299. He was a sent one.

  300. And Paul was sent

  301. by the will of God,

  302. and we see here

  303. Paul's example

  304. of being willing

  305. to be sent by God

  306. and willing to submit

  307. himself to God's will.

  308. His willingness

  309. to hear what God says,

  310. to listen to God's will,

  311. to know what God

  312. wants for his life,

  313. to be sent out

  314. to embrace the cost

  315. and to do it willingly,

  316. to submit himself

  317. to God's will

  318. instead of his own.

  319. I know that Paul

  320. is a familiar figure,

  321. and so to kind of

  322. do a little background

  323. on the apostle Paul

  324. may seem tedious

  325. and maybe unnecessary,

  326. but I think it's important

  327. for us just to remember

  328. who the apostle Paul is

  329. before we even begin

  330. this study.

  331. Those of you

  332. who remember

  333. kind of going back

  334. to the birth of the church

  335. in Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  336. here the church

  337. gets started

  338. because of the work

  339. of God

  340. through his word

  341. in Jerusalem,

  342. and thousands of people

  343. come to faith in Christ.

  344. And so from chapter 1

  345. to chapter 7,

  346. we kind of trace

  347. this work of God

  348. working in Jerusalem

  349. to build the church

  350. that's there.

  351. And then there's

  352. this figure named Saul,

  353. and we come to find out

  354. later that Saul

  355. is synonymous

  356. with Paul.

  357. And now Saul

  358. is instrumental

  359. in chapter 8

  360. of introducing

  361. persecution

  362. to the church.

  363. And because of

  364. Saul's work

  365. of persecuting

  366. the church

  367. because of his love

  368. for Judaism

  369. and wanting to stamp

  370. out Christianity,

  371. God actually uses

  372. the apostle Paul

  373. to make the church

  374. spread to the

  375. uttermost parts

  376. of the world.

  377. It's called

  378. the dispersion.

  379. God uses him

  380. instrumentally

  381. in this seemingly

  382. negative way

  383. to get the word

  384. of God

  385. to now spread out

  386. from Jerusalem

  387. into the known world.

  388. God will come

  389. and do a work

  390. in Paul's heart

  391. in chapter 9,

  392. that road to

  393. Damascus experience

  394. where God will

  395. come and will

  396. communicate

  397. to the apostle Paul

  398. and will lead him

  399. to faith in Christ.

  400. And then from

  401. chapter 9

  402. to the end of the book

  403. we're going to see

  404. the explosion

  405. of this church

  406. that's happening

  407. through the life

  408. and ministry

  409. of the apostle Paul.

  410. Really in many ways

  411. the apostle Paul

  412. is an all star.

  413. He's a superstar

  414. when it comes

  415. to this missionary work.

  416. And we see

  417. his missionary work

  418. that's happening

  419. throughout the book

  420. of Acts

  421. but just calling

  422. attention to

  423. what happens

  424. at the beginning

  425. of his second

  426. missionary journey.

  427. You remember

  428. that he has

  429. kind of tried

  430. to go into

  431. Asia

  432. and I'll show you

  433. this map,

  434. okay?

  435. Actually the very

  436. beginning of Paul's

  437. journey,

  438. he goes to

  439. a little place

  440. called Lystra.

  441. That's kind of

  442. in a circle

  443. at the bottom

  444. of the map.

  445. That happens

  446. to be the hometown

  447. of Timothy.

  448. He picks up

  449. Timothy there

  450. because of the

  451. ministry of

  452. his mother

  453. and grandmother

  454. and the confirmation

  455. of the church

  456. that was there.

  457. He picks up

  458. Timothy

  459. and Timothy

  460. now becomes

  461. part of his

  462. missionary team.

  463. So the apostle Paul

  464. wants to go

  465. into the next

  466. logical spot.

  467. He wants to go

  468. into this region

  469. of Asia.

  470. But remember

  471. what happens

  472. when he tries

  473. to go to Asia?

  474. The Holy Spirit

  475. closes the door.

  476. So he's like,

  477. well, fine,

  478. let's go to

  479. Bithynia.

  480. That's kind of

  481. the next logical

  482. place.

  483. And God,

  484. again,

  485. closes the door

  486. so he can't

  487. go to Bithynia.

  488. Instead he goes

  489. to a place

  490. called Macedonia.

  491. And there he is

  492. in Thessalonica.

  493. That's kind of

  494. the second town

  495. in Macedonia

  496. that he goes to.

  497. And God's work

  498. is so mighty

  499. in Thessalonica

  500. that the Jews

  501. who are there

  502. we find in Acts

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  503. chapter 17,

  504. 6.

  505. It says,

  506. these men,

  507. speaking of

  508. the apostle Paul

  509. and his missionary

  510. team,

  511. have turned

  512. the world

  513. upside down

  514. and have come

  515. here also.

  516. God's mighty

  517. work through

  518. this man

  519. and his team.

  520. So he gets

  521. kind of kicked

  522. out of Thessalonica.

  523. He ends up

  524. making his way

  525. to Ephesus

  526. and his third

  527. missionary journey

  528. and we find this

  529. in Acts chapter 19

    Acts 19:9

  530. verses 9 and 10

  531. speaking again

  532. of Paul's ministry

  533. now in Ephesus.

  534. But when some

  535. became stubborn

  536. and continued

  537. in unbelief,

  538. let me just pause

  539. there for a moment.

  540. The apostle Paul

  541. would traditionally

  542. go into the synagogue

  543. and here in Ephesus

  544. he would teach

  545. in the synagogue

  546. for three months

  547. and the Judaizers

  548. who were there

  549. were not happy.

  550. So they kind of

  551. pushed him out

  552. of the synagogue.

  553. And speaking evil

  554. of the way

  555. before the congregation

  556. he withdrew himself

  557. from them

  558. and took the disciples

  559. with him

  560. reasoning daily

  561. in the hall

  562. of Tyrannus.

  563. This continued

  564. for two years

  565. so that all

  566. the residents

  567. of Asia

  568. heard the word

  569. of the Lord.

  570. Both Jews

  571. and Gentiles.

  572. Now,

  573. do you remember

  574. what happened

  575. on his second

  576. missionary journey?

  577. How he wanted

  578. to go to Asia?

  579. He wanted to go

  580. to Bithynia

  581. and God said no?

  582. And yet the apostle

  583. Paul because

  584. of his heart

  585. to listen

  586. to God's will

  587. and to follow

  588. God's direction

  589. Paul said okay.

  590. Then where is it Lord?

  591. And he ends up

  592. here in Ephesus

  593. and God says

  594. my plan is better

  595. and so what's

  596. going to happen

  597. Paul

  598. is this is going

  599. to be kind of

  600. the seminary

  601. of Ephesus

  602. and I'm going

  603. to allow a number

  604. of individuals

  605. all across Asia

  606. to come here

  607. to this school

  608. and I'm going

  609. to send them

  610. out across

  611. all of Asia

  612. and Colossae

  613. happens to be

  614. one of the beneficiaries

  615. of the ministry

  616. of Paul

  617. to Epaphras

  618. who would then

  619. take that word

  620. of the gospel

  621. to his hometown

  622. to Colossae

  623. and God would

  624. build this church

  625. there in Colossae.

  626. Paul refers

  627. to himself

  628. as an apostle.

  629. An apostle

  630. is a sent one.

  631. It's one

  632. who has been

  633. designated

  634. with this special

  635. role

  636. of sharing

  637. the truth.

  638. sharing the truth

  639. of the gospel

  640. with others.

  641. Of course

  642. Paul wasn't part

  643. of the original 12.

  644. He wasn't even

  645. one of the replacements

  646. there in Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  647. when Judas

  648. needed to be replaced

  649. but the apostle Paul

  650. he calls himself

  651. kind of an apostle

  652. in kind of a distant time.

  653. He refers to

  654. the ministry

  655. that God has

  656. in his life

  657. to reveal

  658. his truth to him.

  659. We find that

  660. in Galatians chapter 1.

    Galatians 1 chapter mention

  661. where Paul says

  662. for I would have you

  663. Galatians 1

  664. sorry

  665. verse 11

  666. let's start there

  667. for I would have you

  668. know brothers

  669. that the gospel

  670. that was preached

  671. by me

  672. was not man's gospel

  673. for I did not

  674. receive it from man

  675. nor was I taught it

  676. but I received it

  677. through

  678. through a revelation

  679. of Jesus Christ.

  680. So while the apostle Paul

  681. didn't

  682. wasn't a part

  683. of Christ's

  684. early

  685. earthly ministry

  686. there was this

  687. ministry

  688. that God

  689. has

  690. to Paul

  691. sometime later

  692. where God

  693. is revealing

  694. truth

  695. to the apostle Paul

  696. and setting him

  697. apart for this

  698. separate and special

  699. work.

  700. It picks up in verse 15

  701. which is the next slide

  702. but when he

  703. speaking of

  704. God

  705. who set me apart

  706. before I was born

  707. and called me

  708. by his grace

  709. was pleased to reveal

  710. his son in me

  711. in order that I might

  712. preach him among

  713. the Gentiles

  714. I did not

  715. immediately consult

  716. with anyone

  717. nor did I go up

  718. to Jerusalem

  719. to those who

  720. were apostles

  721. before me

  722. but I went away

  723. into Arabia

  724. and returned again

  725. to Damascus

  726. then after three years

  727. I went up

  728. to Jerusalem

  729. to visit Cephas

  730. and remained

  731. with him

  732. 15 days.

  733. So there's this

  734. off and on

  735. ministry of God

  736. in revealing truth

  737. to the apostle Paul

  738. in this three year

  739. window of time.

  740. He was set apart.

  741. God had separated

  742. him for a

  743. specific task

  744. an apostleship

  745. to the Gentiles

  746. as it were

  747. and the apostle Paul

  748. was receptive

  749. to God's will

  750. in his life

  751. and Paul will

  752. present himself

  753. as an apostle

  754. and I think

  755. there's several reasons

  756. and I'm just going

  757. to give you a couple.

  758. First,

  759. I think the apostle Paul

  760. in expressing himself

  761. as an apostle

  762. to this group

  763. of individuals

  764. wants to help

  765. establish his

  766. relationship

  767. to this church

  768. of Colossae.

  769. Now we're going

  770. to find this out

  771. once we get to

  772. chapter 2

  773. but the apostle Paul

  774. had never been

  775. to Colossae.

  776. He hadn't preached

  777. the gospel to there

  778. he hadn't planted

  779. this church

  780. and yet here he is

  781. this rich

  782. and deep relationship

  783. this affection

  784. that he seems

  785. to have

  786. for these people

  787. that he's never met

  788. and it's only because

  789. of the connection

  790. they have

  791. with Jesus Christ.

  792. He's an apostle

  793. of Christ Jesus

  794. and here is

  795. a church

  796. and this church

  797. is a church

  798. that is receiving

  799. this ministry

  800. of the word

  801. and they have

  802. also been brought

  803. into community

  804. with Paul

  805. and of course

  806. in community

  807. with God

  808. through faith

  809. in Christ.

  810. So Paul wants

  811. to help establish

  812. this connection

  813. with this group

  814. of believers

  815. and second

  816. he wants to establish

  817. his authority

  818. with them

  819. that he is one

  820. who has been

  821. set apart

  822. by God

  823. to reveal truth

  824. and to help

  825. speak into

  826. their situation.

  827. Third

  828. it helps to affirm

  829. the legitimacy

  830. of their fellowship.

  831. Now here we are

  832. at the very beginnings

  833. of this church

  834. movement

  835. that's taking place

  836. and as we know

  837. what's taking place

  838. in Jerusalem

  839. and then in other places

  840. is the apostles

  841. are the ones

  842. who are kind of

  843. primarily responsible

  844. for establishing

  845. these churches

  846. and yet Colossae

  847. now happens

  848. to be a primary

  849. example of a church

  850. that's been planted

  851. apart from

  852. apostolic authority

  853. apostolic presence

  854. and the apostle Paul

  855. wants to provide

  856. legitimacy

  857. to this group

  858. of believers

  859. not because

  860. of how it was

  861. established

  862. by apostolic authority

  863. but it was established

  864. by the ministry

  865. of the word

  866. and so subsequently

  867. generation

  868. after generation

  869. we're beneficiaries

  870. of the word

  871. and the ministry

  872. of that word

  873. to us

  874. and we're connected

  875. in that way

  876. as well

  877. to the apostle Paul.

  878. Paul was

  879. he was an apostle

  880. by the will of God.

  881. Knowledge of God's will

  882. is going to be

  883. a huge

  884. a huge thrust

  885. a huge theme

  886. through the first

  887. couple of chapters

  888. because

  889. this is a church

  890. that wanted to identify

  891. wanted to have

  892. that secret knowledge

  893. that hidden knowledge

  894. and Paul's like

  895. hey

  896. you don't have to

  897. it doesn't have to

  898. be a secret anymore

  899. because God

  900. has delivered it to you

  901. it's open

  902. he wants his will

  903. to be clear to you

  904. and in verse 9

  905. we're going to get there

  906. next week

  907. Paul will say

  908. we have not ceased

  909. to pray for you

  910. asking that you may be

  911. filled with the knowledge

  912. of his will

  913. God wants his will

  914. to be clear

  915. to be accessible

  916. to be known

  917. and so Paul

  918. becomes an example

  919. an example

  920. of one

  921. who has received

  922. the word

  923. one who has

  924. submitted to the word

  925. and now he's coming

  926. to present

  927. that word again

  928. to this church

  929. but Paul is also

  930. an example

  931. of serving with others

  932. and I just want to

  933. touch on this briefly

  934. Paul was not

  935. a lone ranger

  936. Paul was not

  937. this pioneer

  938. that did things

  939. alone

  940. he wasn't the kind

  941. of guy who thought

  942. well I'm going to

  943. get this taken care of

  944. because look at me

  945. look how great I am

  946. no the apostle Paul

  947. understood the significance

  948. of serving with a team

  949. he recognized

  950. that it wasn't

  951. wasn't inherent

  952. the strength

  953. of ministry

  954. wasn't inherent

  955. to himself

  956. it was a strength

  957. that came

  958. as he would

  959. commit himself

  960. to the Lord

  961. and God would

  962. work through

  963. this team

  964. notice Paul says

  965. in verse 1

  966. an apostle of Christ

  967. Jesus by the will

  968. of God

  969. and Timothy

  970. our brother

  971. Timothy is this

  972. special individual

  973. we were acquainted

  974. with him last fall

  975. we worked through

  976. 1 Timothy

  977. the letter

  978. and Timothy

  979. as we saw

  980. was the kind

  981. of guy

  982. who had this

  983. ability

  984. to endear

  985. himself to others

  986. Paul would send

  987. him into the

  988. hardest situations

  989. it seemed

  990. and he was a

  991. consensus builder

  992. but also one

  993. who knew the truth

  994. of the gospel

  995. and was happy

  996. to share it

  997. with those

  998. he served

  999. in Philippians

    Philippians 2:19–22

  1000. chapter 2

  1001. verse 19

  1002. to 22

  1003. we kind of get

  1004. this resume

  1005. as it were

  1006. as Paul

  1007. is commending

  1008. his disciple

  1009. his son

  1010. in the faith

  1011. Timothy

  1012. he says

  1013. I trust

  1014. in the Lord

  1015. Jesus

  1016. to send

  1017. Timothy

  1018. to you shortly

  1019. that I also

  1020. may be encouraged

  1021. when I know

  1022. your state

  1023. for I have

  1024. no one

  1025. like minded

  1026. who will

  1027. sincerely care

  1028. for your state

  1029. for all

  1030. seek their own

  1031. not the things

  1032. which are of

  1033. Christ Jesus

  1034. but you know

  1035. his proven

  1036. character

  1037. that as a son

  1038. with his father

  1039. he has served

  1040. with me

  1041. in the gospel

  1042. this gigantic

  1043. applause

  1044. of the apostle

  1045. Paul

  1046. in affirming

  1047. and confirming

  1048. this young

  1049. son

  1050. in the faith

  1051. Timothy

  1052. and likely

  1053. the apostle

  1054. Paul does this

  1055. because he knows

  1056. that eventually

  1057. there he is

  1058. in Rome

  1059. and he's

  1060. imprisoned

  1061. there in Rome

  1062. that likely

  1063. he's going to have

  1064. to turn the ministry

  1065. over

  1066. maybe to Timothy

  1067. or that perhaps

  1068. Timothy

  1069. will represent

  1070. Paul

  1071. and help

  1072. to lead this church

  1073. at some point

  1074. down the road

  1075. as he's making

  1076. his way

  1077. back home

  1078. to Lystra

  1079. there's no

  1080. details given

  1081. to us

  1082. why the apostle

  1083. Paul includes

  1084. Timothy

  1085. but it's clear

  1086. that the apostle

  1087. Paul wants

  1088. the church

  1089. to be acquainted

  1090. with Timothy

  1091. given the fact

  1092. that there may be

  1093. some relationship

  1094. in the future

  1095. the apostle

  1096. Paul was not

  1097. a one man

  1098. team

  1099. the apostle

  1100. Paul understood

  1101. the significance

  1102. of working

  1103. with others

  1104. he set the example

  1105. he set the example

  1106. of God

  1107. working in

  1108. and through

  1109. others

  1110. to be a conduit

  1111. of this message

  1112. of the gospel

  1113. to the world

  1114. and then

  1115. we find that

  1116. he refers to them

  1117. as saints

  1118. he sets the example

  1119. by referring to them

  1120. as saints

  1121. and you might say

  1122. why is that

  1123. so important

  1124. in verse 2

  1125. to the saints

  1126. and faithful brothers

  1127. in Christ

  1128. at Colossae

  1129. grace to you

  1130. and peace

  1131. from God

  1132. our father

  1133. he addresses

  1134. this church

  1135. and I believe

  1136. he does this

  1137. strategically

  1138. so he can

  1139. call attention

  1140. not to something

  1141. that is inherent

  1142. to them

  1143. but is something

  1144. that God has done

  1145. for them

  1146. because as

  1147. we continue

  1148. in this

  1149. little letter

  1150. we're going to see

  1151. this was a church

  1152. that was dysfunctional

  1153. as you could believe

  1154. it was a church

  1155. that was messed up

  1156. in so many

  1157. different ways

  1158. and yet

  1159. the apostle Paul

  1160. calls them saints

  1161. and faithful brothers

  1162. to call attention

1163. to the work of God

  1164. in their life

  1165. not a work

  1166. of their own

  1167. the word saint

  1168. may conjure up

1169. a number of different ideas

  1170. the Catholic church

  1171. for example

  1172. has something called

  1173. sainthood

  1174. and just recently

1175. just about a year ago

  1176. in the previous July

  1177. there's a young man

  1178. by the name of

  1179. Carlo Acutis

  1180. who is a teenager

  1181. teenage computer whiz

  1182. who was kind of

  1183. the first millennial

  1184. to be sainted

  1185. to be canonized

  1186. and there is

  1187. this process

  1188. of canonization

  1189. that will take place

  1190. in the Catholic church

  1191. to call attention

  1192. to the unique holiness

  1193. of an individual

  1194. the first part

  1195. of that process

  1196. is to recognize them

1197. as a servant of God

  1198. and there's

  1199. a local bishop

  1200. five years after

  1201. this individual's death

  1202. will investigate

  1203. their life

  1204. and will document

  1205. the different aspects

  1206. of their life

  1207. that were unique

  1208. and he'll report them

  1209. to the next person

  1210. down the road

1211. the next part of the phase

  1212. is venerable

1213. this is where an individual

1214. is found to have lived

  1215. a life of heroic

  1216. Christian virtue

1217. then you get to the

  1218. stage of being blessed

  1219. and a miracle

  1220. is attributed

  1221. to this person's prayer

  1222. it must be verified

  1223. by the church

  1224. and then finally

1225. they're going to be canonized

  1226. and a second miracle

  1227. must be confirmed

  1228. after which the Pope

  1229. will formally declare

  1230. this person

  1231. a saint

  1232. well this is not

  1233. the sainthood

1234. that Paul has in mind

  1235. the sainthood

1236. that Paul is referring to

  1237. does not owe

  1238. their status

  1239. to personal

  1240. holiness

  1241. and performance

  1242. but it looks

  1243. to Jesus Christ

  1244. as the only one

  1245. who can ever merit

  1246. the kind

  1247. of standard

  1248. that God

  1249. would desire

  1250. it's not about

  1251. personal achievement

  1252. it's about the work

  1253. of God

  1254. and what Christ

  1255. has accomplished

  1256. through his perfection

  1257. he calls them saints

  1258. and faithful brothers

  1259. to draw attention

  1260. to what Christ

  1261. has accomplished

  1262. for them

  1263. in spite

  1264. of them

  1265. it's important

  1266. for a group

  1267. of believers

  1268. who were brought

  1269. up thinking

  1270. that they had

  1271. something to achieve

  1272. and maybe you've

  1273. come from that

  1274. that Christian

  1275. background

  1276. that you have

  1277. come to think

  1278. that you owe

  1279. God something

  1280. that there's

  1281. something for you

  1282. to do

  1283. in order for God

  1284. to recognize you

  1285. and to show

  1286. kindness to you

  1287. but the apostle Paul

  1288. sets the example

  1289. by helping us

  1290. understand

  1291. there's nothing

  1292. that we bring

  1293. to the table

  1294. except a heart

  1295. that is willing

  1296. to receive forgiveness

  1297. a heart

  1298. and life

  1299. that's willing

  1300. to embrace

  1301. the righteousness

  1302. of Christ

  1303. so once Paul

  1304. sets the example

  1305. now we find

  1306. in verse 3 to 8

  1307. we find his

  1308. thanks in prayer

  1309. Paul's thanks

  1310. in prayer

  1311. and I think

  1312. this is an example

  1313. too

  1314. he becomes a model

  1315. to this church

  1316. right at the very

  1317. beginning

  1318. of what's really

  1319. important

  1320. in verse 3

  1321. he says

  1322. we always

  1323. thank God

  1324. for you

  1325. excuse me

  1326. we always

  1327. thank God

  1328. the father

  1329. of our Lord

  1330. Jesus Christ

  1331. when we pray

  1332. for you

  1333. notice that

  1334. Paul's thanks

  1335. is to God

  1336. thanks in prayer

  1337. are essential

  1338. but it's important

  1339. to remember

  1340. and the apostle Paul

  1341. understood the significance

  1342. of thanks being

  1343. to God

  1344. and this was something

  1345. that was true

1346. of the apostle Paul's life

  1347. we see this

  1348. in almost every letter

  1349. the apostle Paul wrote

  1350. Romans 1

  1351. 8 to 10

  1352. first

  1353. he says

  1354. I thank my God

  1355. through Jesus Christ

  1356. for all of you

  1357. because your faith

  1358. is proclaimed

  1359. in all the world

  1360. for God

  1361. is my witness

  1362. whom I serve

  1363. with my spirit

  1364. in the gospel

  1365. of his son

  1366. that without ceasing

  1367. I mention you

  1368. always in my prayers

  1369. asking that somehow

  1370. by God's will

  1371. I may now

  1372. at last succeed

  1373. in coming to you

1374. and then to the church

  1375. of Corinth

  1376. in 1 Corinthians 1

  1377. 4

  1378. he says

  1379. I give thanks

  1380. to my God

  1381. always for you

  1382. because of the grace

  1383. of God

  1384. that was given

  1385. you in Christ Jesus

  1386. in Ephesians

  1387. 1 15 and 16

  1388. he says

  1389. for this reason

  1390. because I've heard

  1391. of your faith

  1392. in the Lord

  1393. and your love

  1394. for all the saints

  1395. I do not cease

  1396. to give thanks

  1397. for you

  1398. remembering you

  1399. in my prayers

  1400. to the church

  1401. of Philippi

  1402. in Philippians 1

  1403. 3 and 4

  1404. I thank my God

  1405. in all my remembrance

  1406. of you

  1407. always in every prayer

  1408. of mine

  1409. for you all

  1410. making my prayer

  1411. with joy

  1412. then in 1 Thessalonians

  1413. 1 2 to 3

  1414. we give thanks

  1415. to God

  1416. always for all

  1417. of you

  1418. constantly mentioning

  1419. you in our prayers

  1420. remembering before

  1421. our God

  1422. and Father

  1423. your work

  1424. of faith

  1425. and labor

  1426. of love

  1427. and steadfastness

  1428. of hope

  1429. in our Lord

  1430. Jesus Christ

  1431. this I believe

  1432. is the secret

  1433. one of the secrets

  1434. to the Apostle Paul's

  1435. fruitfulness

  1436. in ministry

  1437. he was a man

  1438. who understood

  1439. that if God's work

  1440. was involved

  1441. that God's work

  1442. would prevail

  1443. so he submitted himself

  1444. to pleading

  1445. for God

  1446. to do the work

  1447. that only God

  1448. can do

  1449. in the lives

  1450. of those

  1451. that Paul shared

  1452. the gospel with

  1453. and he's thankful

  1454. for this church

  1455. he's thankful

  1456. for this church

  1457. in spite

  1458. of their deficiencies

  1459. he's thankful

  1460. for this church

  1461. in spite

  1462. of their theological

  1463. shortcomings

  1464. and they're significant

  1465. matter of fact

  1466. as we work

  1467. through this

  1468. the heresy

  1469. that was kind of

  1470. making its way

  1471. through Colossae

  1472. and through Asia

  1473. and through this church

  1474. was kind of like

  1475. a foundational

  1476. salvific

  1477. kind

  1478. of problem

  1479. where

  1480. we're kind of

  1481. cut across

  1482. the grain

  1483. of saving faith

  1484. and yet Paul

  1485. was still thankful

  1486. for them

  1487. they were dependent

  1488. on human tradition

  1489. this church

  1490. was bound up

  1491. in legalism

  1492. this church

  1493. appealed

  1494. to mysticism

  1495. and worship

  1496. of angels

  1497. they also seem

  1498. to have a problem

  1499. with purity

  1500. we're going to find

  1501. in chapter 3

  1502. Paul says

  1503. put to death

  1504. sexual immorality

  1505. impurity

  1506. passion

  1507. evil desire

  1508. anger

  1509. wrath

  1510. malice

  1511. slander

  1512. obscene talk

  1513. and lying

  1514. what kind of church

  1515. is this

  1516. is it possible

  1517. is it possible

  1518. to be thankful

  1519. for a church

  1520. like this

  1521. and Paul says

  1522. yes

  1523. it's

  1524. it was not

  1525. a model church

  1526. but Paul is able

  1527. to be thankful

  1528. because he's thankful

  1529. to God

  1530. that's the key

  1531. he's thankful

  1532. to God

  1533. you see

  1534. the apostle Paul

  1535. knew

  1536. that what was

  1537. happening

  1538. in Colossae

  1539. was not

  1540. Epaphras' work

  1541. it was not

  1542. Paul's work

  1543. it was God's work

  1544. and so as God

  1545. was working

  1546. in the hearts

  1547. and lives

  1548. of these individuals

  1549. the apostle Paul

  1550. could thank God

  1551. for that work

  1552. and he could

  1553. entrust the matter

  1554. to God

  1555. to know that

  1556. when God

  1557. begins a work

  1558. that God will also

  1559. complete the work

1560. so he could be thankful

  1561. for this church

  1562. to God

  1563. in spite of all

  1564. the deficiencies

  1565. because he knew

  1566. that God was going

  1567. to continue

  1568. to carry it through

  1569. but notice

  1570. he's also thankful

1571. for the word of God

  1572. he's thankful

1573. for the word of God

  1574. we see that

  1575. in verses 4 to 6

  1576. notice

  1577. since we heard

  1578. of your faith

  1579. in Christ

  1580. in the love

  1581. that you have

  1582. for all the saints

  1583. because of the hope

  1584. that is laid up

  1585. for you in heaven

  1586. of this you have

  1587. heard before

  1588. in the word

  1589. of truth

  1590. the gospel

  1591. which has come

  1592. to you

  1593. and is increasing

  1594. in the whole world

  1595. it's bearing fruit

  1596. in increasing

  1597. as also does

  1598. among you

  1599. since the day

  1600. you heard

  1601. and understood

  1602. the grace

  1603. of God

  1604. in truth

  1605. did you catch that

  1606. the apostle Paul

  1607. it's easy to see

  1608. that at the very

  1609. beginnings of this

  1610. we would tend

  1611. to run to

  1612. well Paul

  1613. is celebrating

  1614. this work of faith

  1615. he's celebrating

  1616. this love

  1617. for the saints

  1618. he's celebrating

  1619. this hope

  1620. for heaven

  1621. and we would say

  1622. well look what God

1623. is doing in this church

  1624. and that is true

  1625. we need to understand

  1626. though

  1627. that God is doing

  1628. this work

  1629. through his word

  1630. that he doesn't

  1631. credit

  1632. that Paul doesn't

  1633. credit

  1634. the people

  1635. so much

  1636. as accrediting

  1637. the power

1638. of the word of God

  1639. to bear fruit

  1640. and increase

  1641. as it always does

  1642. faith is anchored

  1643. in Christ

  1644. they do have love

  1645. that pursues

  1646. the saints

  1647. they do have hope

  1648. that looks forward

  1649. to heaven

  1650. these qualities

  1651. are true

  1652. but the apostle Paul

  1653. wants to draw attention

  1654. to the progress

  1655. of the word

  1656. the power

  1657. of that word

  1658. to do

  1659. the work

  1660. that's intended

  1661. to do

  1662. you've heard

  1663. this before

  1664. and Paul

  1665. draws attention

  1666. to the significance

  1667. of hearing

1668. notice that in verse 4

  1669. Paul is thankful

  1670. that they heard

  1671. that he heard

  1672. of their faith

  1673. in Christ

  1674. in verse 5

  1675. this church

  1676. had faith

  1677. love

  1678. and hope

  1679. because they

  1680. heard the word

  1681. of the truth

  1682. of the gospel

  1683. in verse 7

  1684. they learned it

  1685. it was made known

  1686. they heard it

  1687. from Epaphras

  1688. in verse 8

  1689. the apostle Paul

  1690. draws attention

  1691. to hearing

  1692. of the church's

  1693. love

  1694. for him

  1695. in the spirit

  1696. all of these

  1697. significant things

  1698. that the apostle Paul

  1699. is hearing

  1700. because it's a

  1701. it's a work

  1702. that happens

  1703. through the

  1704. ministry of the word

  1705. of God

  1706. maybe you've heard

  1707. the famous quote

  1708. of Francis Assisi

  1709. it's accredited him

  1710. he says

  1711. preach the gospel

  1712. at all times

  1713. and when necessary

  1714. use words

1715. have you heard that before

  1716. meaning

  1717. let your actions

  1718. speak for themselves

  1719. the apostle Paul

  1720. would say

  1721. that's not enough

  1722. the ministry

  1723. of the word

  1724. is not only

  1725. important

  1726. it's essential

  1727. the ministry

  1728. of the word

  1729. is vital

  1730. it's only

  1731. through the ministry

  1732. of the word

  1733. can God

  1734. ever change

  1735. a life

  1736. Romans 10 17

  1737. the apostle Paul

  1738. will say

  1739. so then faith

  1740. comes by

  1741. hearing

  1742. and hearing

  1743. by the word

  1744. of God

  1745. so this

  1746. this church

  1747. was changed

  1748. yes

  1749. but it was changed

  1750. by the ministry

1751. of the word of God

  1752. and that's what

  1753. the word of God

  1754. does

  1755. that's what it

  1756. will always do

  1757. to a life

  1758. that has submitted

  1759. itself

  1760. and yielded itself

  1761. to the work

  1762. of the word

  1763. in their life

  1764. Peter will say

  1765. in 1 Peter

  1766. 1 23

  1767. having been born again

  1768. not of corruptible seed

  1769. but incorruptible

1770. through the word of God

  1771. which lives

  1772. and abides forever

  1773. for all flesh

  1774. is like grass

  1775. in all its glory

  1776. like the flower

  1777. of grass

  1778. the grass

  1779. grass withers

  1780. the flower

  1781. falls

  1782. but the word

  1783. of the Lord

  1784. remains forever

  1785. and this word

  1786. is the good news

  1787. that was preached

  1788. to you

  1789. it's the word

  1790. of God

  1791. that will change

  1792. it's the word

  1793. of God

  1794. that will

  1795. help to

  1796. provide this

  1797. regenerative

  1798. work in our life

  1799. to draw us

  1800. to spiritual

  1801. life

  1802. in him

  1803. the gospel

  1804. is dynamic

  1805. and this church

  1806. is a beneficiary

  1807. of that ministry

1808. of the word of God

  1809. just like the rest

  1810. of the world

  1811. has been

  1812. and I love how

  1813. Paul puts it

  1814. to Timothy

  1815. in 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 2:8

  1816. chapter 2

  1817. verses 8 and 9

  1818. when he says this

  1819. remember

  1820. Jesus Christ

  1821. risen from the dead

  1822. the offspring of David

  1823. as preached

  1824. in my gospel

1825. for which I am suffering

  1826. bound

  1827. with chains

  1828. as a criminal

  1829. but the word

  1830. of God

  1831. is not

  1832. bound

  1833. what an encouragement

  1834. the apostle Paul

  1835. is stuck in prison

  1836. he's chained

  1837. to the walls

  1838. or in prison

  1839. somehow

  1840. he is unable

  1841. to get out

  1842. he's unable

  1843. to spread

  1844. the message

  1845. of the gospel

  1846. but that doesn't matter

  1847. because the word

  1848. of God

  1849. is unleashed

  1850. the word of God

  1851. can't be hindered

  1852. the word of God

  1853. will have its way

  1854. and our confidence

1855. in the word of God

  1856. is what will

  1857. allow us

  1858. to enjoy

  1859. the benefits

  1860. of that work

  1861. in our lives

  1862. in that work

  1863. in our families

  1864. in the work

  1865. wherever we are

  1866. God does his work

  1867. through his word

  1868. and finally

  1869. we find Paul's

  1870. thanks for the spirit

1871. his thanks for the spirit

  1872. verses 7 and 8

  1873. says

  1874. just as you learned

  1875. it from Epaphras

  1876. our beloved fellow servant

  1877. he is a faithful

  1878. minister of Christ

  1879. on your behalf

  1880. and has made

  1881. known to us

  1882. your love

  1883. in the spirit

  1884. Paul is rejoicing

  1885. to God

  1886. because he sees

  1887. the evidence

  1888. of the spirit's work

  1889. in the lives

  1890. of these individuals

  1891. by the way

  1892. it's a work

  1893. that only the spirit

  1894. can produce

1895. the fruit of the spirit

  1896. is love

  1897. joy

  1898. peace

  1899. it's a work

  1900. of God

  1901. in our life

  1902. and as the apostle

  1903. beloved apostle

  1904. John will say

  1905. in his letter

  1906. in 1st John

    John 4 chapter mention

  1907. chapter 4

  1908. 7 and 12

  1909. he'll talk about

  1910. the significance

  1911. of love

  1912. in confirming

  1913. and establishing

  1914. us

  1915. as a people

  1916. of God

  1917. beloved

  1918. let us love

  1919. one another

  1920. for love

  1921. is from God

  1922. and whoever

  1923. loves

  1924. has been born

  1925. of God

  1926. and knows God

  1927. anyone who does

  1928. not love

  1929. does not know God

  1930. because God is love

  1931. and in this

  1932. the love of God

  1933. was made manifest

  1934. among us

  1935. that God sent

  1936. his only son

  1937. into the world

  1938. so that we might

  1939. live through him

  1940. and this is love

  1941. not that we

  1942. have loved God

  1943. but that he

  1944. loved us

  1945. and sent his son

  1946. to be the propitiation

  1947. for our sins

  1948. beloved

  1949. if God

  1950. so loved us

  1951. we ought also

  1952. to love

  1953. one another

  1954. no one

  1955. has ever

  1956. seen God

  1957. if we love

  1958. one another

  1959. God abides

  1960. in us

  1961. and his love

  1962. is perfected

  1963. in us

  1964. this love

  1965. in the spirit

  1966. this spirit

  1967. empowered

  1968. love

  1969. of this church

  1970. is showing up

  1971. and the apostle

  1972. Paul is celebrating

  1973. that work

  1974. in their life

  1975. because he knows

  1976. that God

  1977. is the one

  1978. who's done it

  1979. I want to pray

  1980. for us

  1981. I want to close

  1982. in just a song

  1983. and a challenge

1984. and then I'll dismiss you

  1985. Lord

  1986. thank you for

  1987. Paul's example

  1988. today

  1989. Paul's example

  1990. of knowing

  1991. your will

  1992. and surrendering

  1993. to it

  1994. and his desire

  1995. to lead

  1996. with thanks

  1997. and praise

  1998. and prayer

  1999. God I pray

  2000. that we would

  2001. learn from

  2002. his example

  2003. and that we

  2004. would use

  2005. this little

  2006. letter

  2007. to the

  2008. Colossian church

  2009. to challenge

  2010. us to be

  2011. those kinds

  2012. of people

  2013. so that we

  2014. can also

  2015. enjoy the

  2016. benefits

  2017. the benefits

  2018. of the ministry

  2019. of your word

  2020. to us

  2021. and that

  2022. message

  2023. of your word

  2024. that is

  2025. shared

  2026. with the people

  2027. around us

  2028. God I pray

  2029. that you would

  2030. do your work

  2031. that we would

  2032. be humble

  2033. humble servants

  2034. of yours

  2035. bowing before

  2036. your will

  2037. seeking to

  2038. to know

  2039. your will

  2040. for us

  2041. and following

  2042. after it

  2043. in Jesus name

  2044. amen

  2045. would you sing

  2046. together

  2047. praise the

  2048. father

  2049. praise the

  2050. father

  2051. praise

  2052. the

  2053. son

  2054. praise

  2055. the

  2056. spirit

  2057. spirit

  2058. one

  2059. God

  2060. of glory

  2061. majesty

  2062. praise

  2063. forever

  2064. to the

  2065. king

  2066. of

  2067. king

  2068. !

  2069. I encourage you

  2070. just to

  2071. close your

  2072. eyes right

  2073. now

  2074. and just

  2075. have a

  2076. time between

  2077. you and the

  2078. Lord

  2079. so go ahead

  2080. close your

  2081. eyes

  2082. I just want

  2083. you to consider

  2084. these words

  2085. praise the

  2086. father

  2087. praise the

  2088. son

  2089. praise the

  2090. spirit

  2091. three in

  2092. one

  2093. what does

  2094. that mean

  2095. how does

  2096. that show

  2097. up

  2098. obviously

  2099. it shows

  2100. up as we

  2101. praise the

  2102. Lord together

  2103. in song

  2104. but it's not

  2105. meant to be

  2106. contained here

  2107. it's not meant

  2108. to stay here

  2109. it's meant to be

  2110. part of the

  2111. everyday process

  2112. of life

  2113. as you're

  2114. praising God

  2115. with all

  2116. that you are

  2117. apparently the

  2118. average person

  2119. spends about

  2120. two and a half

  2121. hours a day

  2122. on social

  2123. media

  2124. and the

  2125. average adult

  2126. watches about

  2127. three hours

  2128. of TV a

  2129. day

  2130. the average

  2131. daily gaming

  2132. time is

  2133. one to two

  2134. hours per

  2135. day and

  2136. that's probably

  2137. really conservative

  2138. you add that

  2139. up that's about

  2140. six and a half

  2141. hours a day

  2142. now I know

  2143. that not all

  2144. of you it's

  2145. not reflective

  2146. of everyone in

  2147. this room

  2148. but I wonder

  2149. if we were

  2150. willing to give

  2151. up an hour

  2152. of that time

  2153. each day

  2154. we think we

  2155. need to veg

  2156. out

  2157. just recharge

  2158. I wonder if

  2159. we can find

  2160. real refreshment

  2161. real peace

  2162. with God

  2163. in his word

  2164. and that's what

  2165. I'm going to

  2166. encourage us

  2167. for the next

  2168. three months

  2169. for the next

  2170. three months

  2171. each day

  2172. that you're

  2173. going to say

  2174. God I give

  2175. you

  2176. I give you

  2177. a portion

  2178. a very

  2179. meager portion

  2180. an hour a

  2181. day Lord

  2182. and I'm

  2183. going to

  2184. tune my

  2185. heart

  2186. to your

  2187. word

  2188. and I

  2189. trust that

  2190. you will

  2191. work with

  2192. us

  2193. through

  2194. Colossians

  2195. as we

  2196. seek to

  2197. cultivate

  2198. together

  2199. this heart

  2200. of thanks

  2201. and prayer

  2202. and watch

  2203. what God

  2204. might do

  2205. oh Lord

  2206. I pray

  2207. that your

  2208. spirit

  2209. and your

  2210. word

  2211. and your

  2212. presence

  2213. would be

  2214. clear to

  2215. us

  2216. God I

  2217. pray that

  2218. you'd

  2219. help us

  2220. to press

  2221. in

  2222. forgive

  2223. us

  2224. God

  2225. for the

  2226. deficiencies

  2227. of our

  2228. own lives

  2229. the

  2230. inconsistencies

  2231. and Lord

  2232. I pray

  2233. for myself

  2234. in the next

  2235. three months

  2236. Lord help

  2237. me

  2238. help me

  2239. to

  2240. understand

  2241. the

  2242. significance

  2243. and the

  2244. privilege

  2245. of spending

  2246. time with

  2247. you

  2248. and the

  2249. power that

  2250. comes

  2251. through

  2252. prayer

  2253. and through

  2254. thanks

  2255. and I

  2256. pray

  2257. that you

  2258. would bless

  2259. me

  2260. and bless

  2261. this

  2262. fellowship

  2263. with seeing

  2264. the mighty

  2265. work of

  2266. God

  2267. among us

  2268. in Jesus

  2269. name

  2270. amen

  2271. God bless

  2272. you

  2273. trust you

  2274. have a great

  2275. week

  2276. go in

  2277. peace
