  1. What a great promise, right?

  2. When Christ comes,

  3. we'll be able to enjoy the benefits

  4. Thank you, Manuelers.

  5. Appreciate the reminder of that song.

  6. Imagine running,

  7. running on a treadmill,

  8. and your steps are relentless.

  9. Sweat is pouring down your face.

  10. You push the speed control higher and higher,

  11. convinced that somehow,

  12. the faster you run,

  13. the better you'll perform.

  14. Just a little faster,

  15. just a little longer.

  16. And finally,

  17. finally,

  18. you realize

  19. that all of the effort that you've expended

  20. is not accomplishing anything.

  21. You're just going round and round

  22. and round in circles.

  23. And no matter how much effort you expend,

  24. the ground beneath you never changes

  25. because the treadmill goes

  26. nowhere.

  27. And so you're exhausted.

  28. Not from the distance that you have run,

  29. although the miles you put in

  30. in that treadmill are excessive,

  31. but you haven't really accomplished anything

  32. because the treadmill is all about self-effort

  33. without any progress that is accomplished.

  34. That's where Jesus meets Nicodemus.

  35. That's where we kind of meet Nicodemus

  36. in our story,

  37. the story that we find in John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  38. Nicodemus has come to Jesus one night

  39. and he wasn't a reckless sinner.

  40. He was one of Israel's finest,

  41. a respected teacher,

  42. a Pharisee,

  43. a member of the Sanhedrin,

  44. an elite part of the ruling class in Israel,

  45. part of that elite class of religious leaders

  46. there in Jerusalem.

  47. Nicodemus,

  48. Nicodemus,

  49. for all intents and purposes,

  50. had arrived.

  51. He'd accomplished.

  52. He had fulfilled the obligation.

  53. Yet beneath the robes of his reputation

  54. was a man still running,

  55. tired,

  56. tired by the treadmill,

  57. the treadmill of performance,

  58. and had brought him to the very brink

  59. of wanting to give up.

  60. Then Jesus,

  61. he looked into his heart.

  62. He peered into the spaces of his heart

  63. and he makes this definitive statement

  64. that we find there in John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  65. He says this,

  66. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  67. unless one is born again,

  68. he cannot see the kingdom of God.

  69. In that single sentence,

  70. Jesus dismantled the illusion

  71. of Nicodemus' self-righteousness.

  72. In that single sentence,

  73. Nicodemus was reduced.

  74. Reduced to one who is performing,

  75. but performing with absolutely no benefit.

  76. Nicodemus,

  77. he didn't need to run harder.

  78. He didn't need to keep having more effort.

  79. Nicodemus needed fundamentally a new life.

  80. He needed a new heart.

  81. The problem wasn't Nicodemus' effort.

  82. The problem was Nicodemus' condition,

  83. his nature,

  84. his status before the Lord.

  85. He was fundamentally flawed.

  86. Only the Spirit of God could give him,

  87. give Nicodemus,

  88. what he really needed.

  89. Not effort,

  90. but a new birth from above.

  91. Nicodemus' treadmill isn't unique.

  92. It's the kind of treadmill

  93. that all of us often find ourselves on.

  94. It's the kind of treadmill

  95. that leads to constant effort

  96. and the kind of wearing out

  97. that we find in Nicodemus' life.

  98. In Colossae,

  99. false teachers

  100. were calling believers back to the treadmill.

  101. They were calling them back to obligation.

  102. They were calling them back to duty.

  103. Do more.

  104. Deny more.

  105. Experience more.

  106. And then you'll be more spiritual,

  107. they would say.

  108. But Paul would sound the alarm of the gospel

  109. and he wants them to know,

  110. let no one pass judgment on you.

  111. Those are Paul's words.

  112. Let no one pass judgment on you.

  113. Let no one disqualify you.

  114. Let no one drag you back into the shadows.

  115. Into the shadows of routine.

  116. The shadows of performance.

  117. But rather,

  118. understand the substance

  119. that is available to us in Christ.

  120. You see,

  121. every human effort

  122. to reach God apart from Christ

  123. becomes a treadmill

  124. of empty religion

  125. in motion,

  126. but no arrival.

  127. No arrival.

  128. So Paul urges

  129. those in Colossae

  130. to step off

  131. the treadmill

  132. of self-effort

  133. and to stand

  134. in the finished work

  135. of Jesus Christ.

  136. The gospel

  137. does not say

  138. run faster.

  139. The gospel says

  140. run to Jesus.

  141. So this morning,

  142. as we look at

  143. this passage,

  144. we're going to see

  145. the benefits

  146. of running to Jesus.

  147. Of getting off

  148. the treadmill

  149. of human effort

  150. in recognizing

  151. all that Christ

  152. has accomplished

  153. for us

  154. in his son.

  155. There's only two points

  156. this morning.

  157. The first point is this.

  158. The first is,

  159. the verdict

  160. has been given

  161. so don't let anyone

  162. pass judgment

  163. on you.

  164. There is a verdict.

  165. That verdict

  166. has been announced.

  167. It's been given

  168. by Christ.

  169. So don't let anyone

  170. pass judgment

  171. on you.

  172. Let no one

  173. pass judgment

  174. on you.

  175. We pick up

  176. our passage

  177. this morning

  178. in Colossians

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  179. chapter 2

  180. beginning in verse 15.

  181. It says this.

  182. He disarmed,

  183. speaking of Christ,

  184. he disarmed

  185. the rulers

  186. and authorities

  187. and put them

  188. to open shame

  189. by triumphing

  190. over them

  191. in him.

  192. Therefore,

  193. let no one

  194. pass judgment

  195. on you

  196. in question

  197. of food

  198. and drink

  199. or with regard

  200. to festival

  201. or new moon

  202. or Sabbath.

  203. These things

  204. are a shadow

  205. of that which is to come

  206. but the substance

  207. belongs

  208. to Christ.

  209. We left off

  210. our time together

  211. last week

  212. and speaking

  213. about the victory

  214. that has been purchased

  215. for us

  216. in Jesus Christ.

  217. What God has done

  218. for us

  219. through him.

  220. And we saw

  221. that Jesus

  222. is preeminent.

  223. That he disarmed

  224. rulers

  225. and authorities.

  226. That he literally

  227. undressed them

  228. as it were.

  229. He stripped them

  230. of rank

  231. and he made

  232. a public spectacle

  233. of them.

  234. The picture

  235. that we get

  236. from these words

  237. is a triumphing

  238. commander

  239. who is parading

  240. those who have

  241. been captives,

  242. those who have

  243. been conquered,

  244. those who have

  245. been humbled

  246. through the streets

  247. and Jesus

  248. who reigns

  249. is the one

  250. who is over

  251. them all

  252. parading

  253. these powers

  254. and putting them

  255. to open shame,

  256. public shame.

  257. Of course,

  258. he did this

  259. in demonstration.

  260. It says,

  261. of the fullness

  262. of deity

  263. that dwelled

  264. in him bodily.

  265. That component

  266. of Christ,

  267. that fullness

  268. of who he was,

  269. his deity

  270. just shone through.

  271. And that's why

  272. Paul says,

  273. don't let anyone

  274. pass judgment

  275. on you.

  276. This Greek word

  277. is the word

  278. judgment.

  279. It's this legal

  280. standing,

  281. this decision

  282. that's been made.

  283. Why don't let

  284. anyone pass

  285. judgment on you?

  286. Well, because

  287. the verdict

  288. has been passed.

  289. The verdict

  290. has been given.

  291. The announcement,

  292. the judgment

  293. has been carried

  294. by Christ.

  295. Going all the way

  296. back to verse 10,

  297. we see the things

  298. that Christ

  299. has accomplished.

  300. He says,

  301. you're complete

  302. in him.

  303. Then he says,

  304. you were circumcised

  305. in him,

  306. which is a picture

  307. of this new covenant

  308. relationship,

  309. what Christ has

  310. accomplished

  311. for the sake

  312. of his church.

  313. He says,

  314. you were buried

  315. with him.

  316. There was a death

  317. that happened

  318. in Christ.

  319. We died

  320. to the old

  321. way of life.

  322. We were buried.

  323. But we were also

  324. made alive with him.

  325. He didn't just

  326. leave us

  327. in our death,

  328. but he allowed

  329. us to enjoy

  330. the benefits

  331. of that newness

  332. of life.

  333. You were forgiven

  334. in him.

  335. That debt

  336. was canceled.

  337. You are triumphant

  338. in him,

  339. he says.

  340. All of these

  341. conditions

  342. that are

  343. pronounced

  344. over the believer

  345. who has faith

  346. in Christ

  347. because of

  348. the work

  349. that Christ

  350. has accomplished,

  351. this victorious

  352. work on our

  353. behalf.

  354. So,

  355. let no one

  356. pass judgment

  357. on you.

  358. Don't let anyone

  359. pass judgment

  360. because that

  361. verdict has

  362. already been

  363. announced by

  364. Christ.

  365. You're forgiven.

  366. There's peace.

  367. There can be

  368. relationship.

  369. There can be

  370. fellowship with

  371. God through

  372. his son,

  373. Jesus Christ.

  374. All that has

  375. been accomplished

  376. for us in

  377. him.

  378. Paul will

  379. continue to

  380. declare this

  381. truth in

  382. chapter 3

  383. verses 23

  384. to 25

  385. where he

  386. says,

  387. Now before

  388. faith has

  389. come,

  390. we were

  391. held captive

  392. under the

  393. law,

  394. imprisoned

  395. until the

  396. coming faith

  397. would be

  398. revealed.

  399. So then,

  400. the law

  401. was our

  402. guardian

  403. until Christ

  404. came.

  405. In order

  406. that we

  407. might be

  408. justified

  409. by faith.

  410. But now,

  411. faith has

  412. come.

  413. We are

  414. no longer

  415. under the

  416. law,

  417. but under

  418. a guardian.

  419. All of

  420. these

  421. descriptions

  422. that the

  423. apostle Paul

  424. is using

  425. is to

  426. describe the

  427. condition

  428. that we

  429. had before

  430. we believed,

  431. before we

  432. were people

  433. of faith.

  434. There was

  435. an obligation

  436. that we

  437. had to

  438. the law,

  439. to the

  440. moral demands

  441. of that

  442. law,

  443. and because

  444. of those

  445. moral demands,

  446. we were

  447. enslaved.

  448. We were

  449. bound.

  450. The

  451. apostle Paul

  452. says we

  453. were under

  454. guard by

  455. the law.

  456. But now

  457. because of

  458. Christ and

  459. because of

  460. faith,

  461. there's been

  462. a release.

  463. There's

  464. freedom that

  465. we enjoy.

  466. You are

  467. in Christ,

  468. and so

  469. you're no

  470. longer under

  471. this law.

  472. You're no

  473. longer under

  474. this master.

  475. There is

  476. freedom that

  477. we enjoy,

  478. but it's

  479. not a

  480. freedom without

  481. a law,

  482. per se.

  483. It's a

  484. freedom that

  485. binds us

  486. to love,

  487. to Christ.

  488. Paul was

  489. not an

  490. antinomian,

  491. as it

  492. were.

  493. Paul was

  494. not one

  495. that was

  496. against the

  497. law.

  498. It was

  499. that the

  500. law had

  501. been fulfilled,

  502. and so

  503. because the

  504. obligations of

  505. that law

  506. had been

  507. fulfilled in

  508. Christ,

  509. now there

  510. is a new

  511. condition that's

  512. on our

  513. hearts.

  514. It's a

  515. law of

  516. faith.

  517. It's a

  518. law of

  519. love.

  520. love.

  521. This

  522. ritual

  523. pointed to

  524. this picture,

  525. this picture

  526. of Christ.

  527. Paul continues,

  528. he says,

  529. in verse

  530. 15,

  531. 16,

  532. he says,

  533. therefore,

  534. let no one

  535. pass judgment

  536. on you

  537. with regard

  538. to food

  539. or drink

  540. or with

  541. regard to

  542. festivals

  543. or new

  544. moons

  545. or Sabbaths.

  546. These are

  547. a shadow

  548. of the things

  549. to come,

  550. but the

  551. substance

  552. belongs to

  553. Christ.

  554. All of

  555. those who

  556. were under

  557. the law,

  558. all of

  559. those who

  560. were under

  561. that old

  562. covenant

  563. condition

  564. sought to

  565. meet the

  566. conditions of

  567. that law

  568. by their

  569. own power.

  570. Conditions

  571. that the

  572. apostle Paul

  573. spells out

  574. when he

  575. talks about

  576. food and

  577. drink,

  578. when he

  579. talks about

  580. new moons

  581. and festivals

  582. and Sabbaths.

  583. Certainly

  584. there were

  585. conditions

  586. that bound

  587. the hearts

  588. and lives

  589. of those

  590. who were

  591. under

  592. that moral

  593. obligation

  594. of the

  595. law.

  596. Those

  597. clean

  598. and unclean

  599. foods that

  600. they were

  601. allowed to

  602. partake of

  603. if they were

  604. clean and

  605. were supposed

  606. to put

  607. away if

  608. it was

  609. unclean.

  610. The detail

  611. of those

  612. foods and

  613. the number

  614. of them,

  615. it's an

  616. extensive

  617. list.

  618. Pigs and

  619. camels and

  620. badgers that

  621. they were

  622. unallowed to

  623. eat.

  624. rabbits and

  625. sea creatures,

  626. those whose

  627. fins in

  628. scales,

  629. eels and

  630. shrimps and

  631. lobsters,

  632. they were

  633. forbidden to

  634. eat.

  635. All of the

  636. intricacies of

  637. the law,

  638. it's almost

  639. too difficult

  640. to even

  641. sort out.

  642. It was all

  643. a result of

  644. the condition

  645. of the

  646. burden of

  647. that law.

  648. And partly,

  649. God had a

  650. standard to

  651. draw attention

  652. to his

  653. holiness.

  654. God had

  655. built those

  656. standards to

  657. draw attention

  658. to his

  659. character.

  660. He was a

  661. holy God.

  662. And there

  663. were foods

  664. that were

  665. against his

  666. nature.

  667. God wanted

  668. them to be

  669. distinct.

  670. He didn't

  671. want them to

  672. participate in

  673. the pagan

  674. rituals that

  675. were entrenched

  676. in that day.

  677. there was

  678. food and

  679. drink,

  680. but also

  681. festivals.

  682. All these

  683. festivals,

  684. Passovers,

  685. that they

  686. had to

  687. fulfill.

  688. Day of

  689. Atonement,

  690. the Feast of

  691. Booze,

  692. the Feast of

  693. Weeks,

  694. the laws of

  695. feast and

  696. new moons,

  697. every new

  698. moon that

  699. came,

  700. every Sabbath

  701. practice.

  702. And even

  703. there were

  704. entire years,

  705. the Sabbath

  706. year,

  707. they had to

  708. fulfill and

  709. put away work

  710. for an entire

  711. year.

  712. All of these

  713. were just a

  714. shadow of

  715. the substance.

  716. All of these

  717. were rituals to

  718. perform.

  719. All of these

  720. were burdens

  721. to carry.

  722. But Jesus

  723. came to give

  724. freedom.

  725. Jesus came to

  726. give life.

  727. Jesus came to

  728. fulfill the

  729. obligations of

  730. those burdens

  731. So the people

  732. would be free.

  733. Particularly as

  734. it relates to

  735. the Sabbath.

  736. The Apostle

  737. Paul,

  738. as we know,

  739. we find back

  740. in the law

  741. in Exodus

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  742. chapter 20,

  743. we find,

  744. remember the

  745. Sabbath day

  746. to keep it

  747. holy.

  748. Six days you

  749. shall labor

  750. and do your

  751. work,

  752. but the

  753. seventh day

  754. is the

  755. Sabbath to

  756. the Lord,

  757. your God.

  758. On it you

  759. shall not do

  760. any work,

  761. or your

  762. female servant,

  763. or your son,

  764. or your daughter,

  765. or your

  766. livestock,

  767. or the

  768. sojourner who

  769. is within

  770. your gate.

  771. For in

  772. six days the

  773. Lord made

  774. them and

  775. rested on

  776. the seventh

  777. day.

  778. Then,

  779. therefore,

  780. the Lord God

  781. blessed the

  782. Sabbath day

  783. and made it

  784. holy.

  785. We find this

  786. principle of

  787. rest that's

  788. built in to

  789. the law.

  790. This principle

  791. of rest that

  792. actually even

  793. goes back to

  794. the pattern of

  795. rest that's built

  796. right into

  797. creation.

  798. That in six

  799. days work was

  800. to take place

  801. and on the

  802. seventh day there

  803. was to be rest.

  804. this timeless

  805. principle,

  806. this rhythm

  807. of work

  808. and rest

  809. was meant

  810. to be the

  811. cadence by

  812. which those

  813. who lived

  814. according to

  815. God would

  816. follow.

  817. But it was

  818. a yoke.

  819. It was a yoke

  820. that the

  821. Apostle Paul

  822. draws attention

  823. to.

  824. And Paul

  825. will say

  826. in Colossians,

  827. he'll say,

  828. don't let

  829. anyone pass

  830. judgment on

  831. you with

  832. regard to

  833. Sabbaths.

  834. Why?

  835. Well,

  836. because as

  837. Paul will

  838. say,

  839. these are

  840. just a

  841. shadow.

  842. These are

  843. not the

  844. substance.

  845. This is

  846. not the

  847. observance

  848. that God

  849. came to

  850. fulfill.

  851. These

  852. observances

  853. were just

  854. the shadow,

  855. a symbol,

  856. not the

  857. reality,

  858. the outline,

  859. but not the

  860. actual image.

  861. They were

  862. not meant

  863. to be

  864. permanently

  865. binding,

  866. but to

  867. direct the

  868. attention of

  869. those who

  870. followed them

  871. fixed,

  872. this fixed

  873. standard of

  874. Christ to

  875. help them

  876. understand that

  877. Christ was

  878. the end of

  879. the law.

  880. Christ was

  881. the fulfillment

  882. of the law,

  883. not the

  884. duty of

  885. carrying these

  886. burdens on

  887. their own.

  888. Just like the

  889. blood of the

  890. bulls and

  891. goats,

  892. they were not

  893. the once for

  894. all sacrifice

  895. that was

  896. needed.

  897. Not the

  898. repeated

  899. sacrifices over

  900. and over

  901. again,

  902. but recognizing

  903. this picture

  904. of Christ,

  905. that Christ

  906. came to

  907. complete,

  908. to complete

  909. and fulfill

  910. the law.

  911. So,

  912. the shadow

  913. had become

  914. substance.

  915. The gray

  916. had become

  917. this brilliant

  918. color.

  919. And that's

  920. why Paul

  921. will say,

  922. don't fall

  923. back into

  924. the weak

  925. and basic

  926. principles.

  927. You find in

  928. Galatians

    Galatians 4:9

  929. chapter 4,

  930. verse 9,

  931. now you

  932. have come

  933. to know

  934. God,

  935. or rather

  936. have been

  937. known by

  938. God,

  939. how can

  940. you turn

  941. back again

  942. to the

  943. weak and

  944. worthless

  945. elementary

  946. principles

  947. of the

  948. world,

  949. whose slaves

  950. you want

  951. to become

  952. once more?

  953. You

  954. observe

  955. days and

  956. months and

  957. seasons and

  958. years.

  959. I'm afraid

  960. that I may

  961. have labored

  962. over you

  963. in vain.

  964. These things

  965. have been

  966. fulfilled,

  967. the obligations

  968. have been

  969. met,

  970. Christ has

  971. come.

  972. We find in

  973. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  974. 10,

  975. it says,

  976. for sins

  977. the law

  978. has,

  979. excuse me,

  980. for sins

  981. the law

  982. has but

  983. a shadow

  984. of the good

  985. things to

  986. come,

  987. instead of

  988. the true

  989. form of

  990. the realities.

  991. It can

  992. never,

  993. by the

  994. same

  995. sacrifice

  996. that are

  997. continually

  998. offered

  999. every year

  1000. make perfect

  1001. those who

  1002. draw near.

  1003. Otherwise,

  1004. would they

  1005. not have

  1006. ceased

  1007. to be

  1008. offered

  1009. since the

  1010. worshiper

  1011. having once

  1012. been cleansed

  1013. would no

  1014. longer have

  1015. been conscious

  1016. of his

  1017. sins?

  1018. If Christ

  1019. has cleansed

  1020. you,

  1021. then why do

  1022. you continue

  1023. to offer

  1024. sacrifices?

  1025. That cleansing

  1026. has happened,

  1027. it's happened

  1028. through Christ,

  1029. and so

  1030. there's no

  1031. longer a

  1032. need for

  1033. us to

  1034. continue

  1035. to sacrifice

  1036. as we

  1037. find in

  1038. the Old

  1039. Testament

  1040. law.

  1041. So what

  1042. do we

  1043. make of

  1044. this Sabbath

  1045. principle?

  1046. In Matthew

    Matthew 12:5–8

  1047. chapter 12

  1048. verses 5

  1049. to 8,

  1050. Jesus

  1051. says,

  1052. have you

  1053. not read

  1054. in the

  1055. law

  1056. how the

  1057. Sabbath,

  1058. the priests

  1059. in the

  1060. temple

  1061. profane,

  1062. the Sabbath

  1063. and are

  1064. guiltless?

  1065. I tell

  1066. you,

  1067. something

  1068. greater

  1069. than the

  1070. temple

  1071. is here.

  1072. And if

  1073. you have

  1074. known

  1075. what this

  1076. means,

  1077. I desire

  1078. mercy

  1079. and not

  1080. sacrifice,

  1081. you would

  1082. not have

  1083. condemned

  1084. the guiltless,

  1085. for the

  1086. Son of

  1087. Man is

  1088. Lord of

  1089. the

  1090. Sabbath.

  1091. Jesus

  1092. draws

  1093. attention

  1094. to the

  1095. power of

  1096. the Savior,

  1097. the power

  1098. of Christ

  1099. himself,

  1100. that he

  1101. is the

  1102. Lord of

  1103. the

  1104. Sabbath,

  1105. that he

  1106. is the

  1107. one who

  1108. has fulfilled

  1109. the Sabbath

  1110. obligations,

  1111. and he

  1112. is the

  1113. one who

  1114. now offers

  1115. rest to

  1116. those who

  1117. are in

  1118. Christ.

  1119. As Jesus

  1120. will say,

  1121. my yoke

  1122. is easy,

  1123. my burden

  1124. is light,

  1125. enjoy the

  1126. rest that I

  1127. have to give

  1128. to you.

  1129. So Jesus

  1130. fulfilled the

  1131. obligation of

  1132. the Sabbath,

  1133. Jesus fulfilled

  1134. the obligation of

  1135. those new

  1136. moons and

  1137. rituals and

  1138. feast days,

  1139. and because

  1140. he's fulfilled

  1141. it, the

  1142. verdict has

  1143. been written.

  1144. That

  1145. verdict is

  1146. that you

  1147. are forgiven,

  1148. that you

  1149. are righteous,

  1150. that you

  1151. are one

  1152. who is

  1153. enjoying the

  1154. benefits of

  1155. all that

  1156. Christ has

  1157. come to

  1158. accomplish.

  1159. So not

  1160. only has the

  1161. verdict been

  1162. given, so

  1163. we don't need

  1164. to pass

  1165. judgment,

  1166. we come

  1167. also to

  1168. recognize your

  1169. bondage has

  1170. been removed,

  1171. so don't

  1172. let anyone

  1173. disqualify

  1174. you.

  1175. Your bondage

  1176. has been

  1177. removed.

  1178. Don't be

  1179. disqualified.

  1180. Verse 18

  1181. of chapter 2

  1182. says,

  1183. let no one

  1184. disqualify you

  1185. insisting on

  1186. asceticism,

  1187. on worship of

  1188. angels,

  1189. going on in

  1190. detail about

  1191. visions puffed

  1192. up without

  1193. reason by his

  1194. sensuous mind

  1195. and not holding

  1196. fast to the

  1197. head, from

  1198. whom the whole

  1199. body, nourished

  1200. and knit

  1201. together,

  1202. through its

  1203. joints and

  1204. ligaments,

  1205. grows with

  1206. a growth

  1207. that is

  1208. from God.

  1209. Don't be

  1210. disqualified.

  1211. Don't be

  1212. those who

  1213. run the

  1214. race and

  1215. run it in

  1216. a way that

  1217. will ultimately

  1218. lead for your

  1219. disqualification.

  1220. This word to

  1221. disqualify is

  1222. to deprive.

  1223. It's to

  1224. encroach upon

  1225. another's

  1226. interest.

  1227. It really

  1228. has the idea

  1229. of condemnation.

  1230. Don't run in

  1231. such a way that

  1232. you're going to

  1233. be disqualified

  1234. or condemned.

  1235. Make sure

  1236. you're playing

  1237. by the rules,

  1238. the Apostle

  1239. Paul would

  1240. say.

  1241. There's an

  1242. illustration of

  1243. one who is

  1244. an ultra

  1245. marathoner.

  1246. This ultra

  1247. marathoner who

  1248. ran this

  1249. 50 mile race

  1250. back in

  1251. 2023.

  1252. And they

  1253. were one of

  1254. the top

  1255. performers.

  1256. They were

  1257. able to finish

  1258. in third

  1259. place.

  1260. And in

  1261. April of

  1262. 2023, this

  1263. 47-year-old

  1264. Scottish woman,

  1265. ultra marathoner,

  1266. she was able

  1267. to finish

  1268. third overall.

  1269. And her

  1270. recorded time

  1271. was seven

  1272. hours, which

  1273. was an

  1274. incredible

  1275. accomplishment.

  1276. Seven hours

  1277. for 50 miles

  1278. and worth of

  1279. race.

  1280. However, when

  1281. the officials

  1282. reviewed her

  1283. GPS tracker,

  1284. they noticed

  1285. something impossible

  1286. had happened.

  1287. In the middle

  1288. of the race,

  1289. somehow, for

  1290. two and a

  1291. half miles,

  1292. she had run

  1293. 35 miles an

  1294. hour.

  1295. Of course, she

  1296. had ridden in a

  1297. car to accomplish

  1298. that objective.

  1299. And in order to

  1300. kind of get ahead

  1301. and actually maybe

  1302. even get back to

  1303. the place that

  1304. she had been,

  1305. she ended up

  1306. riding in this

  1307. car for two

  1308. and a half miles

  1309. so that she could

  1310. get back to the

  1311. spot in the

  1312. race.

  1313. Of course, she

  1314. admitted later on

  1315. to her cheating.

  1316. And of course, as

  1317. a result of her

  1318. cheating, she was

  1319. disqualified.

  1320. Disqualified and

  1321. actually banned for

  1322. 12 months that

  1323. following year.

  1324. The Apostle Paul

  1325. will direct our

  1326. attention to the

  1327. same kinds of

  1328. consequences when

  1329. he says for us

  1330. not to be

  1331. disqualified.

  1332. 2 Timothy 2

    2 Timothy 2:5

  1333. verse 5 says,

  1334. Are you competing

  1335. according to the

  1336. rules?

  1337. Paul will also

  1338. say in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 9:24–26

  1339. chapter 9 verses

  1340. 24 to 26, he

  1341. says this,

  1342. Do you not know

  1343. that in a race

  1344. all runners run

  1345. but only one

  1346. will receive the

  1347. prize?

  1348. So run that you

  1349. may obtain it.

  1350. Every athlete

  1351. exercises self-control

  1352. in all things.

  1353. They do it to

  1354. receive a perishable

  1355. wreath but we

  1356. an imperishable.

1357. So I do not run

  1358. aimlessly.

1359. I do not box as

  1360. one who beats

  1361. the air.

  1362. The Apostle Paul

  1363. describes this

  1364. race that he was

1365. in and a race that

1366. all of us are in

1367. but we need to run

1368. this race in a way

  1369. that is according

  1370. to the rules.

  1371. And Paul will

  1372. use different

  1373. ways to describe

  1374. the false

  1375. teachers and how

  1376. they were trying

  1377. to run through

  1378. self-effort.

  1379. We find first

  1380. they were insisting

  1381. on asceticism

  1382. and asceticism

  1383. is simply

  1384. the condition

  1385. of treating

  1386. yourself in a

  1387. way that is bad

  1388. so that somehow

  1389. you will be able

  1390. to attain

  1391. spirituality.

  1392. spirituality.

  1393. This desire

  1394. of humility

  1395. and lowliness.

  1396. This treating

  1397. your body

  1398. or treating

  1399. yourself,

  1400. depriving yourself

  1401. of pleasures

  1402. in order to

  1403. attain some

  1404. level of

  1405. spirituality.

  1406. They were also

  1407. worshiping angels.

  1408. This worship

  1409. of angels

  1410. seemed to dominate

  1411. their attention

  1412. instead of

  1413. worship of God.

  1414. They were those

  1415. who relied on

  1416. visions.

  1417. It says they

  1418. go on in

  1419. detail about

  1420. what has been

  1421. seen.

  1422. They wanted to

  1423. boast about

  1424. their experiences

  1425. of all the

  1426. special extra

  1427. visions that

  1428. they had been

  1429. able to partake

  1430. in rather than

  1431. depending on

  1432. the revelation

  1433. of God through

  1434. his word.

  1435. They were also

  1436. puffed up without

  1437. reason by their

  1438. sensuous mind.

  1439. These individuals

  1440. who seemed to

  1441. boast in their

  1442. accomplishments.

  1443. They boast in

  1444. their spirituality

  1445. but it was all

  1446. counterfeit

  1447. because they

  1448. weren't holding

  1449. fast to the

  1450. head.

  1451. They weren't

  1452. those who were

  1453. depending on the

  1454. work of Christ

  1455. alone.

  1456. They pursued

  1457. special experiences.

  1458. They wanted

  1459. all of these

  1460. wonderful

  1461. revelations

  1462. Christians.

  1463. But instead

  1464. of it leading

  1465. them to

  1466. God,

  1467. it led them

  1468. away from

  1469. God.

  1470. It led them

  1471. into bondage.

  1472. You see,

  1473. healthy churches,

  1474. healthy people

  1475. are those who

  1476. will follow

  1477. what we find in

  1478. Colossians 2

    Colossians 2:1

  1479. verses 1 and 2.

  1480. I want you to

  1481. know,

  1482. he says,

  1483. how great a

  1484. struggle I have

  1485. for you and

  1486. for those in

  1487. Laodicea who

  1488. have not seen

  1489. me face to

  1490. face,

  1491. that their

  1492. hearts may be

  1493. encouraged,

  1494. being knit

  1495. together in

  1496. love to reach

  1497. all the riches

  1498. of the full

  1499. assurance and

  1500. understanding and

  1501. the knowledge of

  1502. God's mystery which

  1503. is Christ.

  1504. That's what God

  1505. has to offer.

  1506. That's what the

  1507. Apostle Paul in

  1508. Colossians 2 is

  1509. talking about.

  1510. These hearts that

  1511. are knit together,

  1512. this refreshment,

  1513. this health,

  1514. this vitality

  1515. that's taking

  1516. place,

  1517. this unity among

  1518. God's people,

  1519. this working

  1520. together that is

  1521. happening.

  1522. As the Apostle

  1523. Paul will say in

  1524. Ephesians 4

    Ephesians 4:15

  1525. verses 15,

  1526. he says,

  1527. rather speaking the

  1528. truth in love,

1529. we are to grow up

  1530. in every way into

  1531. him who is the

  1532. head into Christ,

  1533. from whom the

  1534. whole body joined

  1535. and held together

  1536. by every joint

  1537. which is equipped

  1538. when each part is

  1539. working properly

  1540. makes the body

  1541. grow so that it

  1542. builds itself up

  1543. in love.

  1544. Love is the way

  1545. you can tell a

  1546. church is healthy.

  1547. It loves the Lord

  1548. Jesus Christ.

  1549. It loves and has

  1550. affection for others

  1551. in that love for

  1552. one another does

  1553. something.

  1554. It leads to some

  1555. energy, some effort

  1556. on their part but

  1557. it's that effort

  1558. that's motivated by

  1559. a heart of love

  1560. for God and love

  1561. for one another.

  1562. It results in

  1563. unity.

  1564. It results in a

  1565. church that's held

  1566. together in growing,

  1567. a church that's

  1568. actively working out

  1569. the things that it's

  1570. been called to.

  1571. It's not the church

  1572. that we find in

  1573. Colossians chapter 2

    Colossians 2:20

  1574. verse 20.

1575. It says if we, if

  1576. with Christ you

  1577. died to the

  1578. elemental spirits

  1579. of the world,

  1580. why, why as if

  1581. you were still

  1582. living in the

  1583. world, do you

  1584. still submit to

  1585. its rules and

  1586. regulations?

  1587. Do not handle,

  1588. do not taste,

  1589. do not touch,

  1590. referring to all

  1591. things that perish

  1592. as they are being

  1593. used according to

  1594. human precepts,

  1595. according to

  1596. teaching.

  1597. These things have

  1598. indeed the

  1599. appearance of

  1600. wisdom in

  1601. promoting self-made

  1602. religion and

  1603. asceticism and

  1604. severity to the

  1605. body but they

  1606. are of no value

  1607. in stopping the

  1608. indulgence of the

  1609. flesh.

  1610. All this human

  1611. effort, all of

  1612. this innate

  1613. desire, this

  1614. energy that we

  1615. expend to try to

  1616. put away those

  1617. fleshly desires

  1618. that we have and

  1619. we find that

  1620. only Christ can

  1621. come and remove

  1622. those fleshly

  1623. desires.

  1624. Only Christ is

  1625. the one who has

  1626. been able to

  1627. destroy the works

  1628. of the devil.

  1629. Only Christ is

  1630. the one who has

  1631. allowed us to

  1632. experience the

  1633. freedom that

  1634. comes as he

  1635. is killed, he's

  1636. put to death

  1637. our flesh and

  1638. made us alive in

  1639. the spirit.

  1640. So as we

  1641. think about what

  1642. Christ has

  1643. accomplished, as

  1644. we understand that

  1645. the verdict has

  1646. been written, as

  1647. we seek as

  1648. those who don't

  1649. want to be

  1650. disqualified, we

  1651. remember what

  1652. Christ has

  1653. accomplished for

  1654. us and we

  1655. remember the

  1656. wonder of his

  1657. work and we

  1658. praise him.

  1659. let me pray.

  1660. Lord, I thank

  1661. you for what you

  1662. have done in

  1663. Christ Jesus.

  1664. Lord, I thank

  1665. you for

  1666. forgiveness of

  1667. sins and

  1668. cleansing.

  1669. I thank you,

  1670. Lord, for the

  1671. death of our

  1672. sinful flesh,

  1673. that you've

  1674. made us alive

  1675. in Christ

  1676. because of your

  1677. spirit.

  1678. spirit.

  1679. And Lord, I

  1680. pray that you

  1681. would help us

  1682. to walk in

  1683. that newness of

  1684. life.

  1685. Not bound by

  1686. human traditions,

  1687. not bound by

  1688. the obligations of

  1689. the law, but

  1690. free.

  1691. Free because in

  1692. Christ you have

  1693. accomplished it

  1694. all.

  1695. But of course

  1696. that freedom

  1697. doesn't mean that

  1698. we live any way

  1699. that we want

  1700. to.

  1701. That freedom

  1702. compels us because

  1703. of love for Christ

1704. to live in a way

  1705. that's pleasing to

  1706. you.

  1707. And so I pray

  1708. that you would

  1709. help us,

  1710. Father, to live

  1711. in that very

  1712. way.

  1713. That you would

  1714. be glorified.

  1715. That you would

  1716. triumph.

  1717. In Jesus' name.

  1718. Amen.
