  1. I trust you've been encouraged and challenged as we've been making our way through the book of Colossians together.

  2. ! The number of times where thankfulness and prayer kind of come together.

  3. ! Well, they're going to come together again for us this morning as we begin to study Colossians chapter 4, beginning in verse 2.

    Colossians 4 chapter mention

  4. It says, continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.

  5. Again, thanks and prayer coming together.

  6. Last month we kind of celebrated a month of prayer.

  7. This month we're kind of carrying out a month of thanks, kind of devoting attention to thanksgiving.

  8. And part of thanksgiving has been our harvest offering that we want to continue to encourage you to contribute towards.

  9. We're asking for about $40,000 for the sake of several of our missionaries.

  10. And kind of strategic initiatives that will help them to be more effective in the ministry that they're a part of.

  11. You can see that in your harvest offering brochure.

  12. But things like coming alongside some missionaries who are a part of teaching and training pastors and Christian leaders.

  13. Those who are doing church planting, a chance for us to kind of work on or think about ministry here at home with a soccer camp.

  14. And also with the bus stop across the way.

  15. And maybe being able to help provide a kind of an enclosure, a shelter for people who are using the bus stop.

  16. Just a way for us to neighbor in a very tangible way.

  17. But each time along this week we want to present you with a missionary.

  18. And this morning we're going to let you see and listen from the Bells who are serving our church.

  19. Hi, hello, Maranatha.

  20. We are the Bells and we're coming to you from Cape Town, South Africa.

  21. Yeah, we just wanted to share a few testimonies of the Lord's faithfulness in our ministry over here.

  22. And yeah, many of you know that ministry can be really hard and full of unknowns and surprises.

  23. And so it's important to just reflect on the positive things and the way that the Lord has worked.

  24. Yeah, we're grateful to serve a faithful, constant God.

  25. And we have just continued to see those testimonies of a steadfast love and faithfulness to us.

  26. The church is growing.

  27. In fact, this Sunday we're bringing in another 10 members.

  28. And so we're grateful to see all of that.

  29. And also being able to invest all year in developing further leaders.

  30. Helping to fill roles that we're currently filling as we hope to launch out in the next year or so from that church to plant.

  31. And in that vein, our home Bible study is one of those things that's been growing tremendously.

  32. And we've had a good influx of folks from our community that have invested themselves in there.

  33. We've gotten to know them and they've gone on and gotten involved in the church.

  34. And so we're excited to see what the Lord's going to do in all these things.

  35. But also in the last year, some other additional testimonies of his faithfulness is being able to open new doors for us.

  36. And being able to proclaim the gospel in new places from the campus of the University of the Western Cape to further opportunities to minister among Muslims.

  37. To being able to teach a systematic theology class at a local film school, for example.

  38. But we appreciate your prayers.

  39. The Lord is continuing to be faithful and declaring his goodness and his grace.

  40. And we have an opportunity to help train some men to faithfully preach and proclaim the gospel in a gospel desert in Oates Wharton in December.

  41. And so ask specifically for your prayers that first weekend in December as we go out there and try to bring along some other men,

  42. some other brothers together and teach them to continue to proclaim this faithful God and the good news of his gospel.

  43. So thank you for your partnership in doing so.

  44. And we'll be excited to be sharing soon even more.

  45. Thanks, Maranatha.

  46. Bye.

  47. Bye.

  48. So thank you for your partnership with our missionaries.

  49. Isn't it?

  50. It's really neat to be able to not only hear from our missionaries,

  51. but to just kind of get a taste of what God is doing through their lives and to be a part of that work through prayers and through financial contributions.

  52. So thank you for the way that you are contributing to the needs of the saints

  53. and helping to build thanksgivings to God through your love for them in this way.

  54. We're back in our study in Colossians and we're kind of wrapping up.

  55. We've got just two weeks to go.

  56. And of course, you would expect the Apostle Paul is going to end on the notes that he's begun.

  57. This concept of thanksgiving, this idea of prayer that he wants to continue to bring back to the church

  58. and help them to understand and recognize the significance of what God has called them to.

  59. We've been working through the gospel or the letter to the Colossians,

  60. and we've seen the significance of doctrine, the theology of who Christ is,

  61. and recognizing that theology isn't just something that's supposed to fill our heads,

  62. but theology is supposed to bury itself out in the way we live.

  63. The doctrine that you have is a doctrine that's meant to be put to work.

  64. And so last week we got to see some gospel pictures, some theological pictures,

  65. that begin to press in to the lifeblood of families in particular.

  66. The Apostle Paul encouraged submission of wives.

  67. He encouraged love of husbands.

  68. He encouraged obedience of children and of servants.

  69. And all of that was, of course, to show this portrait of Christ.

  70. Who is Christ?

  71. Not just what he has communicated about himself theologically,

  72. but how does the doctrine of God play out in the way you live?

  73. Well, this morning we're going to see how that theology now plays out

  74. in how we live towards outsiders.

  75. Not just within a family, but now how it plays out in how we live in a watching world.

  76. Turn with me, if you would, to Colossians chapter 4.

    Colossians 4 chapter mention

  77. We're going to begin in verse 2.

  78. And we're going to start, we're going to see five hallmarks,

  79. five activities that will be true of those who love Jesus,

  80. disciples of Christ, who want to show Christ.

  81. What will they do?

  82. There are five things we're going to look at this morning.

  83. Let me read this for us, and then we'll jump into our passage.

  84. It says,

  85. Continue steadfastly in prayer,

  86. being watchful in it with thanksgiving.

  87. At the same time, pray also for us,

  88. that God may open to us a door for the word

  89. to declare the mystery of Christ,

  90. on account of which I'm in prison,

  91. that I may make it clear which is how I ought to speak.

  92. Walk in wisdom towards outsiders,

  93. making the best use of the time.

  94. Let your speech always be gracious,

  95. seasoned with salt,

  96. so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

  97. How does a person who loved Jesus walk?

  98. How does a person who is a disciple of Christ

  99. begin to show Christ,

  100. show good, rich, true theology in their life?

  101. Well, the Apostle Paul begins here

  102. by focusing and concentrating some attention

  103. on prayer that depends on God.

  104. Those who love God,

  105. those who trust God,

  106. those who want to please God,

  107. will demonstrate that dependence on God

  108. through prayer.

  109. Prayer that depends on God.

  110. This command, continue steadfastly.

  111. It is this present imperative

  112. that expresses this everyday part of life,

  113. this constant present activity

  114. that should be true of every believer.

  115. It's one word in the Greek,

  116. and it means to persist,

  117. or to keep, or to endure, to remain.

  118. It came to be used of a boat

  119. that was always kind of standing at the ready,

  120. kind of waiting for the individual

  121. who needed to be transported

  122. from one place to the other.

  123. Kind of what we got to see a bit

  124. in the Gospel of Luke

  125. as the disciples were there on the shore,

  126. and their boat was at the ready

  127. to take Jesus out, out.

  128. Maybe a better example would be of a taxi.

  129. And those of you who have ever been in a big city,

  130. and I don't think Columbus really qualifies for that,

  131. but been maybe to a city of Los Angeles

  132. or to the city of New York,

  133. and have been in the airport,

  134. and you know how it usually works,

  135. where the taxis will line up

  136. as the people are unloading from the airport

  137. and needing to make their way

  138. to the various places across the city.

  139. this readiness and this attentiveness

  140. of the taxi drivers

  141. who are standing at the ready,

  142. ready to respond

  143. and to whisk that person

  144. to the place of their destination.

  145. And here again,

  146. we're reminded of readiness,

  147. a ready heart,

  148. ready to respond,

  149. continuing steadfastly

  150. in having a heart that persists,

  151. that's waiting,

  152. that's ready.

  153. And here we're to respond in prayer.

  154. And we see this as a kind of a hallmark

  155. of a church that's devoted to God,

  156. continuing steadfastly in prayer.

  157. It's used throughout the book of Acts

  158. to describe the church.

  159. We find it in Acts 1, verse 14.

    Acts 1:14

  160. All of these with one accord

  161. were devoting themselves to prayer

  162. together with the women

  163. and Mary, the mother of Jesus,

  164. and the brothers.

  165. Why were they devoted to prayer?

  166. Why were they at the ready?

  167. Why were they receptive in praying?

  168. Well, they were responding

  169. and praying with direction.

  170. Their hearts were praying with intentionality.

  171. Their hearts were praying

  172. and following instruction.

  173. They had received instruction from Jesus.

  174. You remember?

  175. That Jesus said,

  176. hey, I want you to wait in Jerusalem.

  177. There's something that's going to happen there.

  178. You will receive power

  179. if you wait for me in Jerusalem.

  180. The Holy Spirit is going to come upon you.

  181. And so in their ready hearts,

  182. in their receptive hearts,

  183. in their dependent hearts,

  184. they were demonstrating a prayer

  185. with direction.

  186. They were praying for this Holy Spirit,

  187. praying according to the instructions

  188. they'd received from Christ Himself.

  189. They were also praying with devotion.

  190. You remember that the disciples

  191. who prayed there,

  192. this group of 120 believers,

  193. as they prayed,

  194. the Holy Spirit did come.

  195. And as a result of His coming,

  196. they were empowered by the Holy Spirit.

  197. And that because of their testimony,

  198. thousands of people came to faith in Christ.

  199. And as a result of this gospel witness,

  200. as a result of the work of God in their life,

  201. and kind of unifying now this church together,

  202. there was this prayer of devotion.

  203. We see in Acts 2, verse 42.

    Acts 2:42

  204. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching

  205. and fellowship,

  206. to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

  207. And those numbers of disciples increased.

  208. We find later on in Acts 2, verse 47,

    Acts 2:47

  209. that day by day,

  210. God was adding to their number

  211. those who were being saved.

  212. That God was doing a work.

  213. It was happening through

  214. the concentrated, united efforts of prayer.

  215. A devoted people,

  216. receptive to the instructions of the Lord,

  217. praying for God's power

  218. to be unleashed among them.

  219. And so we find

  220. that those who heard the word believed

  221. and the church multiplied as a result.

  222. And because of this multiplication

  223. of God's work

  224. in answering prayer for them,

  225. now we see a need for praying with discernment.

  226. They needed to pray with discernment.

  227. The church grew.

  228. Wisdom was needed.

  229. How do you interact

  230. or how do you help

  231. to care for the needs of so many?

  232. And so Peter would speak up

  233. as one of the apostles

  234. there in the early church in Jerusalem.

  235. In Acts 6, verse 4,

    Acts 6:4

  236. he would say,

  237. We will devote ourselves to prayer

  238. and to the ministry of the word.

  239. We find in verse 7,

  240. the word of God continued to increase

  241. in the number of disciples,

  242. multiplied greatly in Jerusalem,

  243. and a great many of the priests

  244. became obedient to the faith.

  245. This devoted prayer,

  246. this receptive prayer.

  247. So what can we learn from their example?

  248. And by the way,

  249. in every case,

  250. this word devoted is used

  251. or continuing steadfastly in prayer is used.

  252. It's always used

  253. in reference to prayer itself.

  254. So what can we learn from their example?

  255. Why should we continue in prayer this way?

  256. And of course,

  257. there are a number of reasons

  258. that we could work through,

  259. but just one that I want to focus on this morning,

  260. and that is,

  261. we pray in constant prayer

  262. because God answers prayer.

  263. We pray to God in prayer

  264. because God answers prayer.

  265. And prayer unleashes God's power

  266. on the situation that we pray about

  267. as we're praying according to God's will.

  268. I love how P.T. Forsyth says this.

  269. He says,

  270. Prayer is the slender nerve

  271. that moves the muscle of omnipotence.

  272. Have you thought about that?

  273. That God responds to His people when they pray.

  274. That as God's people obey the instructions

  275. that God has put in place,

  276. that God delights in answering their prayers.

  277. Much like what we see in John 14, verse 13,

    John 14:13

  278. where Christ is telling the disciples,

  279. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do.

  280. Why?

  281. Well, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

  282. If you ask me anything in my name,

  283. I will do it.

  284. Prayer is that slender nerve

  285. that moves the muscle of omnipotence.

  286. God has coupled Himself

  287. to carry out the will of God

  288. through those who are faithful to pray.

  289. Of course, God is sovereign.

  290. God is sovereign.

  291. We know that.

  292. Psalm 115, verse 3 says this.

    Psalms 115:3

  293. Our God is in the heavens.

  294. He does whatever He pleases.

  295. That's God's prerogative.

  296. He does what He pleases.

  297. But at the same time,

  298. God has ordained

  299. that His will is worked out

  300. through the prayers of His people.

  301. Spurgeon has said this.

  302. Prayer is not overcoming God's reluctance,

  303. but laying hold of His willingness.

  304. You have a willing God

  305. who delights in answering prayer.

  306. Augustine has said this.

  307. He says,

  308. He, speaking of God,

  309. He inspires us to ask

  310. what He is preparing now to give.

  311. That God has ordained

  312. not only the ends of a thing,

  313. but He's ordained the means

  314. to accomplish those ends.

  315. God's purpose,

  316. God's will

  317. is accomplished

  318. through the means

  319. by which He has sanctioned

  320. those purposes to happen.

  321. And it happens through

  322. the coupling of prayer.

  323. Jonathan Edwards has said this.

  324. God has so constituted things

  325. that prayer is the expression

  326. of dependence

  327. which He delights to answer.

  328. God delights in answering prayer.

  329. And God has given His Holy Spirit.

  330. And this is the beautiful thing

  331. we find in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  332. We don't have time to read that.

  333. I don't want to get distracted by that.

  334. But I want you to understand

  335. that God has placed His Holy Spirit

  336. to help us understand

  337. how to pray in our weakness.

  338. And it's the Holy Spirit

  339. who prays according to the will of God.

  340. It's the Holy Spirit

  341. who calls in your hearts

  342. to pray for the things

  343. that God wants to do.

  344. And as you're faithful to pray

  345. for those things

  346. that the Spirit has laid on your heart,

  347. the Holy Spirit takes

  348. those requests to God

  349. and God delights to answer.

  350. You see, the miracle is not

  351. that we move God.

  352. The miracle is that God moves us.

  353. He moves us to pray.

  354. God's sovereignty

  355. doesn't make prayer unnecessary.

  356. It makes prayer certain.

  357. So the more we pray

  358. according to God's will,

  359. the more we are depending

  360. on the Spirit's leading in our life.

  361. And the more we pray

  362. according to the Spirit,

  363. the more we'll see

  364. God work out His will,

  365. His purposes,

  366. in the situation.

  367. So God has chosen

  368. the ends

  369. as well as the means.

  370. And as we couple ourselves

  371. to pray

  372. according to the will of God,

  373. we can be a part

  374. of God's sovereign plan

  375. of working those things out

  376. in life.

  377. So pray.

  378. Pray according to the will of God.

  379. Be used of God

  380. to see God's purposes

  381. come to fruition.

  382. Prayer depends on God.

  383. We see in the second part

  384. of this verse,

  385. verse 2,

  386. we see not only prayer

  387. that depends on God,

  388. we also see eyes

  389. that watch for God.

  390. Eyes that watch for God.

  391. Notice,

  392. continue steadfastly in prayer,

  393. being watchful

  394. in thanksgiving.

  395. This word for watchful

  396. is the word to stay awake,

  397. to be alert,

  398. to be vigilant.

  399. It's a word

  400. that expresses urgency.

  401. And every time

  402. watchfulness is used

  403. throughout the New Testament,

  404. it speaks of danger.

  405. Like a sentry

  406. or a night watchman,

  407. the Apostle Paul

  408. tells the church of Ephesus

  409. in Acts chapter 20,

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  410. he says,

  411. be alert.

  412. Watch out for the wolves.

  413. They're coming.

  414. There's danger

  415. to the church

  416. of Thessalonica

  417. in 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 5:6

  418. chapter 5,

  419. verse 6,

  420. he says,

  421. so then let us not sleep

  422. as others do,

  423. but let us keep awake

  424. and be sober.

  425. Peter will say

  426. to the church

  427. that's scattered

  428. throughout the known world,

  429. be sober-minded,

  430. be watchful.

  431. Your adversary,

  432. the devil,

  433. prowls around

  434. like a roaring lion,

  435. seeking someone

  436. to devour.

  437. Christ will say

  438. to the disciples

  439. in Matthew chapter 26,

    Matthew 26:38

  440. verse 38,

  441. watch and pray.

  442. That's our word.

  443. That you enter not

  444. into temptation.

  445. And finally,

  446. Peter will say

  447. and kind of put

  448. these two together

  449. very similar

  450. to how Paul does it

  451. in 1 Peter chapter 4,

    1 Peter 4:7

  452. verse 7,

  453. he says,

  454. but the end of all things

  455. is at hand.

  456. Therefore,

  457. be serious

  458. and watchful

  459. in your prayers.

  460. Pray with watchfulness.

  461. Pray with thankfulness.

  462. And maybe it would seem strange

  463. that Paul would put

  464. watchfulness

  465. and thankfulness together.

  466. But maybe we can understand

  467. how watchfulness

  468. by itself

  469. will cause issues

  470. in our heart.

  471. As God is making us

  472. more aware

  473. of the dangers

  474. that are there,

  475. as God is helping us

  476. to be more aware

  477. of the problems

  478. that are coming

  479. and the decline,

  480. the moral decline

  481. in our society,

  482. it's really easy

  483. for us to become paranoid,

  484. wouldn't you say?

  485. It's really easy

  486. for us to give way

  487. to fear.

  488. It's easy for us

  489. to become suspicious

  490. and to wonder

  491. what's going to happen next.

  492. Who's around the corner?

  493. When's the next shoe

  494. going to drop?

  495. Can I really trust

  496. the people

  497. that I'm around?

  498. And it's really easy

  499. for watchfulness,

  500. as good as watchfulness is,

  501. to lead us in

  502. to paranoia,

  503. to fear.

  504. And that's what

  505. thanksgiving helps

  506. to balance out.

  507. It counterbalances

  508. fear

  509. and spurs

  510. within us

  511. hopefulness.

  512. And while there is

  513. a watchfulness,

  514. an alertness,

  515. not only for the

  516. negative things

  517. that are happening,

  518. but now to see

  519. and to have our eyes

  520. open to how God

  521. is overcoming,

  522. those negative

  523. struggles and troubles,

  524. and He's showing up

  525. to accomplish His purposes,

  526. thanksgiving helps

  527. to make us hopeful.

  528. In this way,

  529. we begin to interpret

  530. the world

  531. not through fear,

  532. but through grace,

  533. through God's power.

  534. We come to anticipate

  535. God's answers.

  536. We come to believe

  537. even more

  538. that God is in control.

  539. And since He's in control,

  540. that He's working.

  541. He's accomplishing

  542. His purposes,

  543. even though I may not see

  544. what He's doing.

  545. Imagine,

  546. prayer is a watchtower.

  547. Watchfulness that keeps us

  548. kind of scanning the horizon,

  549. seeing the movements

  550. not only of the approaching enemy,

  551. but also recognizing

  552. the power

  553. and the presence

  554. of God who is there.

  555. that we see

  556. His advancements.

  557. So Thanksgiving

  558. is kind of that light

  559. that is burning

  560. in the watchtower,

  561. helping to illuminate

  562. our perspective

  563. so that we

  564. are not seeing

  565. through the lens

  566. of shadow and fear

  567. or suspicion,

  568. but we're seeing

  569. the lens

  570. through God's power

  571. that God is present.

  572. I think about

  573. the psalmist

  574. in Psalm 23,

  575. though I walk

  576. through the valley

  577. of the shadow of death,

  578. I will fear no evil.

  579. Why?

  580. Because you're with me.

  581. That watchfulness

  582. is seeing

  583. the reality

  584. of the hardships

  585. that are present,

  586. but it's illuminated

  587. by the light

  588. of who God is,

  589. and so

  590. a thankful heart

  591. decides

  592. to remain confident

  593. in the presence

  594. and power of God.

  595. That watchfulness

  596. coupled with thankfulness

  597. is so important.

  598. So prayer

  599. that depends on God,

  600. eyes

  601. that watch for God

  602. because God

  603. is working.

  604. And then doors

  605. that open for God.

  606. We see that

  607. in verses 3 to 4.

  608. Doors that open for God.

  609. At the same time,

  610. pray for us

  611. that God may open

  612. to us a door

  613. for the word

  614. to declare

  615. the mystery of Christ

  616. on account of which

  617. I'm in prison

  618. that I may make it clear

  619. which is how

  620. I ought to speak.

  621. Doors

  622. that open

  623. for God.

  624. Paul,

  625. on numerous occasions,

  626. says,

  627. pray for us.

  628. Pray for us.

  629. Why would he say

  630. pray for us?

  631. Well,

  632. in light of what

  633. we've just learned,

  634. that prayer is the way

  635. that God

  636. is unleashing

  637. his plan

  638. and purpose

  639. on the world.

  640. The apostle Paul

  641. is inviting

  642. the church

  643. to participate

  644. in praying

  645. for God

  646. to do

  647. his will

  648. in the world.

  649. Like the model

  650. prayer

  651. that we find

  652. from Christ

  653. to his disciples.

  654. It says,

  655. Our Father

  656. who is in heaven,

  657. hallowed be your name.

  658. Your kingdom

  659. come,

  660. your will

  661. be done

  662. on earth

  663. as it is in heaven.

  664. We want God's

  665. will to be done.

  666. We are invited

  667. by Christ

  668. and even his model

  669. prayer

  670. to pray for that

  671. will of God

  672. to unfold for us.

  673. Paul

  674. is pleading

  675. with the church

  676. to pray for him.

  677. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 5:25

  678. chapter 5

  679. verse 25,

  680. simply,

  681. brothers,

  682. pray for us.

  683. And then in 2 Thessalonians

  684. 3, 1,

  685. he says,

  686. Finally,

  687. brothers,

  688. pray for us

  689. that the word

  690. of the Lord

  691. may speed ahead

  692. and be honored

  693. as has happened

  694. among you.

  695. In Hebrews 13, 8,

  696. pray for us

  697. for we are sure

  698. that we have

  699. a clear conscience

  700. desiring to act

  701. honorably

  702. in all things.

  703. Romans 15, 30,

  704. I appeal to you,

  705. brothers,

  706. by our Lord Jesus Christ

  707. and by the love

  708. of the Spirit

  709. to strive together

  710. with me

  711. in your prayers

  712. to God

  713. on my behalf.

  714. You see,

  715. God is absolutely

  716. sovereign,

  717. but God has

  718. coupled

  719. the working

  720. of his will

  721. to the prayers

  722. of his people.

  723. So what does Paul

  724. want them to pray for?

  725. Well, there are two things here.

  726. We see,

  727. they're joined together

  728. by the hinna clause

  729. or the in order

  730. that clause.

  731. First,

  732. that God may open

  733. a door

  734. and then second,

  735. that I might make it clear.

  736. Those are the two purposes.

  737. First,

  738. pray for an open door.

  739. Pray for opportunities.

  740. Pray that God

  741. would just burst open

  742. the door of gospel testimony

  743. and witness

  744. so that he can be magnified

  745. in the process.

  746. Now,

  747. one might ask,

  748. well,

  749. Paul,

  750. you're in prison.

  751. How can a door

  752. of opportunity

  753. be opened to you?

  754. You're stuck in jail.

  755. And I think

  756. the danger for us

  757. and probably what's natural

  758. for us

  759. is to think

  760. when hard things happen

  761. that we've been sidelined

  762. and that God's will

  763. can't be accomplished

  764. because we're stuck

  765. in prison

  766. or we're stuck away.

  767. That wasn't Paul's perspective.

  768. You see,

  769. Paul doesn't pray

  770. for open prison doors,

  771. but for open ministry doors.

  772. He understands

  773. that ministry

  774. is not confined

  775. to prison.

  776. He knows

  777. that only God

  778. can create

  779. true gospel opportunities.

  780. And as the church

  781. of Philippi prayed,

  782. that's exactly,

  783. that's precisely

  784. what God did.

  785. We find that

  786. in Philippians 1,

    Philippians 1:12

  787. verse 12.

  788. God answered prayer.

  789. Notice,

  790. I want you to know,

  791. brethren,

  792. the things which

  793. have happened to me

  794. have actually turned out

  795. for the furtherance

  796. of the gospel.

  797. So that has become evident

  798. to the whole palace guard

  799. and to all the rest.

  800. My chains are in Christ.

  801. And most of the brethren

  802. in the Lord

  803. having become confident

  804. by my chains

  805. are much more bold

  806. to speak the word

  807. without fear.

  808. God accomplished

  809. his purposes

  810. through the prayers

  811. of his people

  812. in ways

  813. they could never

  814. have imagined.

  815. not only in opening

  816. up opportunities

  817. for Paul to preach

  818. but emboldening

  819. a church

  820. to follow

  821. Paul's example

  822. and to see God

  823. work through them too.

  824. The apostle Paul

  825. encouraging this church

  826. to pray for open

  827. doors.

  828. We find the summation

  829. of Paul's ministry

  830. still stuck in prison

  831. in Acts chapter 28,

    Acts 28:30

  832. verse 30.

  833. Notice what he says.

  834. Paul dwelt

  835. two whole years

  836. in his own rented house.

  837. He received all

  838. who came to him

  839. preaching the kingdom

  840. of God

  841. and teaching the things

  842. concerning the Lord

  843. Jesus Christ

  844. with all confidence

  845. no one forbidding him.

  846. Open doors.

  847. Gospel doors.

  848. The jail that was meant

  849. to silence

  850. the apostle Paul

  851. becomes a pulpit

  852. to the world.

  853. Pray for open doors.

  854. Next pray for a clear witness

  855. that I might make it

  856. clear how I ought

  857. to speak.

  858. This is a similar prayer

  859. to what Paul

  860. asked the church

  861. to pray for him

  862. in Ephesians chapter 6

    Ephesians 6:18

  863. verses 18 and 19.

  864. He says,

  865. praying at all times

  866. in the spirit

  867. with all prayer

  868. and supplication

  869. to the end

  870. keep alert

  871. with perseverance

  872. making supplication

  873. for the saints

  874. and also for me

  875. that words may be

  876. given to me

  877. in opening my mouth

  878. boldly

  879. to proclaim

  880. the mystery

  881. of the gospel.

  882. Pray that I not only

  883. speak for Christ

  884. pray that I speak

  885. boldly for Christ.

  886. There are many reasons

  887. why our gospel witness

  888. might be unclear.

  889. Perhaps

  890. it's because we preach

  891. with the tongue

  892. of men and angels

  893. but we have not love

  894. so we become

  895. a sounding brass

  896. or a clanging gong.

  897. Maybe it's because

  898. we preach Christ

  899. with our mouth

  900. but our life

  901. is so out of step

  902. with the gospel

  903. that people can't hear

  904. our words

  905. because they are

  906. so distracted

  907. with our lives.

  908. Maybe because

  909. we soften the truth

  910. to avoid trouble.

  911. Maybe because

  912. we love the ease

  913. more than its impact.

  914. Or maybe because

  915. our grumbling heart

  916. muffles

  917. the gospel of God.

  918. Or our harsh tones

  919. hide

  920. His holy truth.

  921. Our ignorance

  922. perhaps limits

  923. our clarity.

  924. We're not speaking

  925. clearly

  926. because we don't know

  927. the right things

  928. to express.

  929. We cannot explain

  930. what we've not studied.

  931. We hide the gospel

  932. perhaps because

  933. we fear

  934. the opposition.

  935. There are so many

  936. reasons why

  937. our gospel

  938. might be hidden,

  939. might be concealed,

  940. might be unclear.

  941. Oh may God

  942. help our speech

  943. be clear.

  944. May God

  945. open gospel doors

  946. and clarify

  947. our message.

  948. So prayer

  949. that depends on God.

  950. Eyes

  951. that watch

  952. for God.

  953. Doors

  954. that open

  955. for God

  956. and feet

  957. that walk

  958. in wisdom.

  959. Colossians

    Colossians 4:5

  960. chapter 4

  961. verse 5.

  962. Walk

  963. in wisdom

  964. towards outsiders

  965. making the best

  966. use of time.

  967. What is Paul

  968. talking about?

  969. What is this

  970. wise walk?

  971. What is he referring

  972. to?

  973. How do we walk

  974. in wisdom?

  975. Is Paul

  976. simply talking

  977. about maximizing

  978. gospel opportunities,

  979. navigating this life

  980. so that we can

  981. build friendships?

  982. relationships.

  983. I imagine

  984. that's part

  985. of what Paul

  986. has in his heart.

  987. But I think

  988. the apostle Paul

  989. is more interested

  990. in the seriousness

  991. of the situation.

  992. The urgency

  993. of the opportunity.

  994. He's concerned

  995. about this church

  996. and preserving

  997. the integrity

  998. of their faith.

  999. Remember

  1000. how the apostle Paul

  1001. is speaking about

  1002. wisdom throughout

  1003. this letter

  1004. and he's talking

  1005. about don't let

  1006. anyone defraud

  1007. you.

  1008. don't let

  1009. anyone delude

  1010. you with

  1011. heresies.

  1012. Don't let

  1013. anyone disqualify

  1014. you.

  1015. Don't let anyone

  1016. pass judgment

  1017. on you.

  1018. He's concerned

  1019. about the integrity

  1020. of the faith

  1021. of this church.

  1022. He said so much

  1023. in his letter

  1024. to the church

  1025. of Galatia.

  1026. He's worried

  1027. about have I

  1028. spent so much

  1029. time with you

  1030. that now you're

  1031. wandering away

  1032. from the truth.

  1033. May that not

  1034. be true of you.

  1035. May you hold

  1036. to the integrity

  1037. of faith.

  1038. Walk in wisdom

  1039. with insiders

  1040. but also walk

  1041. with wisdom

  1042. with outsiders.

  1043. Wisdom.

  1044. What does a

  1045. life of wisdom

  1046. look like?

  1047. We don't have

  1048. time this morning

  1049. to review all

  1050. the things we've

  1051. learned in this

  1052. letter of Colossae

  1053. but in summary

  1054. a life of wisdom

  1055. is a life that

  1056. looks like Christ.

  1057. That Christ

  1058. is our life.

  1059. That he's the one

  1060. who's stamped

  1061. his image

  1062. on our hearts.

  1063. That we're living

  1064. with him.

  1065. That he has

  1066. accomplished things

  1067. for us

  1068. and he's created

  1069. in us a new

  1070. identity.

  1071. That's why he's

  1072. called us

  1073. with the Apostle

  1074. Paul in chapter

  1075. 3 verse 1

  1076. to set your minds

  1077. your hearts

  1078. on things above.

  1079. That's where

  1080. Christ is.

  1081. So walking

  1082. in wisdom

  1083. in this world

  1084. is walking

  1085. in a way

  1086. that looks

  1087. like Jesus.

  1088. That the more

  1089. you love Jesus

  1090. and you obey

  1091. Jesus

  1092. the more people

  1093. see Jesus

  1094. coming through.

  1095. And of course

  1096. when people

  1097. see Jesus

  1098. come through

  1099. your life

  1100. now there's

  1101. danger.

  1102. Remember what

  1103. Jesus says

  1104. to the Apostles

  1105. in the upper room?

  1106. He says

  1107. if they persecuted

  1108. me

  1109. they will also

  1110. persecute you.

  1111. don't be

  1112. distracted.

  1113. Don't be

  1114. those who

  1115. are thinking

  1116. it's going to

  1117. work out well

  1118. for you

  1119. because

  1120. if they

  1121. treated me

  1122. this way

  1123. they're going

  1124. to treat you

  1125. this way

  1126. as well.

  1127. And throughout

  1128. throughout the

  1129. Gospels

  1130. and throughout

  1131. especially

  1132. 1 Peter

  1133. I have a number

  1134. of verses

  1135. that I put

  1136. there in your

  1137. outline.

  1138. There's danger

  1139. from those

  1140. who live

  1141. like Christ.

  1142. And so

  1143. there's wisdom

  1144. that must be

  1145. involved.

  1146. We find

  1147. from Peter's

  1148. letter

  1149. in chapter 2

  1150. verse 11

  1151. or verse 12

  1152. he says

  1153. keep your

  1154. conduct

  1155. among the

  1156. Gentiles

  1157. honorable

  1158. so that

  1159. when they

  1160. speak against

  1161. you as

  1162. evildoers

  1163. they may

  1164. see your

  1165. good deeds

  1166. and glorify

  1167. God

  1168. on the

  1169. day of

  1170. visitation.

  1171. Walk

  1172. wisely

  1173. he says

  1174. in chapter

  1175. 2

  1176. or chapter

  1177. 3

  1178. even if

  1179. you would

  1180. suffer

  1181. for righteousness

  1182. sake

  1183. you are

  1184. blessed

  1185. have no

  1186. fear of

  1187. them

  1188. or be

  1189. troubled

  1190. but in

  1191. your

  1192. hearts

  1193. honor

  1194. Christ

  1195. as

  1196. Lord

  1197. as

  1198. holy

  1199. and being

  1200. prepared

  1201. to make

  1202. defense

  1203. to everyone

  1204. who asks

  1205. you for

  1206. the reason

  1207. of the

  1208. hope

  1209. that's

  1210. in you

  1211. yet do

  1212. it

  1213. with

  1214. gentleness

  1215. and respect

  1216. have a

  1217. good conscience

  1218. so that

  1219. when you

  1220. are slandered

  1221. those who

  1222. revile

  1223. your good

  1224. behavior

  1225. in Christ

  1226. may be

  1227. put to

  1228. shame

  1229. for it

  1230. is better

  1231. to suffer

  1232. for doing

  1233. good

  1234. if that

  1235. should be

  1236. God's

  1237. will

  1238. than

  1239. for doing

  1240. evil

  1241. walk

  1242. in wisdom

  1243. know the

  1244. dangers

  1245. but don't

  1246. let those

  1247. dangers

  1248. keep you

  1249. from being

  1250. bold

  1251. in your

  1252. testimony

  1253. cause them

  1254. to press

  1255. in

  1256. to be

  1257. obedient

  1258. to God

  1259. to depend

  1260. on God

  1261. to be

  1262. courageous

  1263. to speak

  1264. in a way

  1265. that God

  1266. would speak

  1267. Christ

  1268. would speak

  1269. with words

  1270. that were

  1271. full

  1272. of truth

  1273. and grace

  1274. let your

  1275. words

  1276. be

  1277. marked

  1278. by wisdom

  1279. by speaking

  1280. in a way

  1281. that Christ

  1282. would speak

  1283. your wisdom

  1284. will now

  1285. walk

  1286. and the world

  1287. will interpret

  1288. your Christ

  1289. by the way

  1290. you live

  1291. walk in a way

  1292. that pleases

  1293. him

  1294. and finally

  1295. in verse 6

  1296. lips

  1297. that speak

  1298. with grace

  1299. lips

  1300. that speak

  1301. with grace

  1302. let your speech

  1303. always be

  1304. gracious

  1305. seasoned

  1306. with salt

  1307. so that you

  1308. may know

  1309. how you

  1310. ought to

  1311. answer

  1312. each person

  1313. you know

  1314. that our

  1315. words

  1316. are windows

  1317. our words

  1318. are a window

  1319. to our

  1320. heart

  1321. as Jesus

  1322. will say

  1323. out of the

  1324. heart

  1325. the mouth

  1326. speaks

  1327. and so our

  1328. words provide

  1329. a clear

  1330. picture

  1331. of what

  1332. we believe

  1333. what we

  1334. prioritize

  1335. what we

  1336. value

  1337. how we

  1338. feel

  1339. and so

  1340. the words

  1341. that we

  1342. speak

  1343. should be

  1344. gracious

  1345. words

  1346. because

  1347. we have

  1348. a gracious

  1349. God

  1350. if you

  1351. have

  1352. experienced

  1353. the grace

  1354. of Christ

  1355. your words

  1356. should be

  1357. marked

  1358. by the

  1359. grace

  1360. of Christ

  1361. to others

  1362. what you

  1363. believe

  1364. about Christ

  1365. will show

  1366. up in the

  1367. way that you

  1368. speak

  1369. and our

  1370. words

  1371. are not

  1372. just

  1373. windows

  1374. our

  1375. words

  1376. are also

  1377. a witness

  1378. and that's

  1379. why we're

  1380. encouraged

  1381. to bless

  1382. those

  1383. who curse

  1384. you

  1385. to bless

  1386. and curse

  1387. not

  1388. what you

  1389. believe

  1390. about this

  1391. gracious

  1392. God

  1393. shows up

  1394. in your

  1395. gracious

  1396. words

  1397. to others

  1398. you bless

  1399. instead of

  1400. curse

  1401. you're showing

  1402. Christ

  1403. in the way

  1404. that you

  1405. speak

  1406. I love

  1407. how Paul

  1408. puts this

  1409. how beautiful

  1410. are the feet

  1411. of those

  1412. who preach

  1413. good

  1414. news

  1415. do you

  1416. have

  1417. beautiful

  1418. feet

  1419. do you

  1420. have

  1421. gracious

  1422. lips

  1423. our words

  1424. either point

  1425. people to

  1426. Christ

  1427. or they

  1428. point people

  1429. away

  1430. from Christ

  1431. faith

  1432. filled

  1433. words

  1434. are

  1435. gracious

  1436. words

  1437. because

  1438. we have

  1439. a God

  1440. who is

  1441. full of

  1442. grace

  1443. and truth

  1444. our words

  1445. should be

  1446. marked

  1447. by Christ

  1448. gracious

  1449. truthful

  1450. tender

  1451. Paul

  1452. is

  1453. indicating

  1454. not only

  1455. the content

  1456. of our

  1457. words

  1458. but also

  1459. the manner

  1460. in which

  1461. our words

  1462. are spoken

  1463. speaking

  1464. loving

  1465. words

  1466. in an

  1467. unloving

  1468. way

  1469. I'm sure

  1470. you've

  1471. addressed

  1472. your children

  1473. or loved

  1474. ones

  1475. in that

  1476. respect

  1477. our heart

  1478. needs to

  1479. echo

  1480. the words

  1481. that we

  1482. speak

  1483. it needs

  1484. to

  1485. mimic

  1486. the example

  1487. of Christ

  1488. and his

  1489. grace

  1490. that we've

  1491. all

  1492. enjoyed

  1493. this

  1494. should be

  1495. a habitual

  1496. pattern

  1497. this

  1498. graciousness

  1499. this

  1500. saltiness

  1501. salt

  1502. has

  1503. three

  1504. uses

  1505. it

  1506. could

  1507. either

  1508. sterilize

  1509. food

  1510. or it

  1511. could

  1512. season

  1513. it

  1514. could

  1515. help

  1516. preserve

  1517. and so

  1518. our words

  1519. are meant

  1520. to preserve

  1521. preserve

  1522. the kinds

  1523. of life

  1524. that we're

  1525. seeking

  1526. to accomplish

  1527. in the

  1528. world

  1529. around

  1530. us

  1531. Paul

  1532. will close

  1533. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:29

  1534. chapter 4

  1535. verse 29

  1536. he includes

  1537. this

  1538. admonition

  1539. let no

  1540. corrupting

  1541. talk

  1542. come out

  1543. of your

  1544. mouths

  1545. but only

  1546. such as

  1547. is good

  1548. for building

  1549. up

  1550. as fits

  1551. the occasion

  1552. that it

  1553. may give

  1554. grace

  1555. to those

  1556. who hear

  1557. your words

  1558. carry power

  1559. the power

  1560. of not only

  1561. exemplifying

  1562. Christ

  1563. but the

  1564. power

  1565. of

  1566. distributing

  1567. the

  1568. grace

  1569. of God

  1570. to

  1571. others

  1572. what

  1573. power

  1574. what a

  1575. privilege

  1576. that we

  1577. have

  1578. what a

  1579. responsibility

  1580. to make

  1581. sure that

  1582. our words

  1583. are marked

  1584. with

  1585. gentleness

  1586. !

  1587. Let me pray

  1588. for us

  1589. and as

  1590. I pray

  1591. I'm going

  1592. to invite

  1593. the deacons

  1594. to come

  1595. forward

  1596. so we

  1597. can

  1598. take

  1599. our

  1600. communion

  1601. Father

  1602. thank you

  1603. for the

  1604. example

  1605. that you've

  1606. given to

  1607. us

  1608. of yourself

  1609. and thank

  1610. you for

  1611. the

  1612. encouragement

  1613. for the

  1614. picture

  1615. that you've

  1616. placed in

  1617. front of

  1618. us

  1619. how to

  1620. make

  1621. theology

  1622. more than

  1623. just

  1624. head

  1625. knowledge

  1626. but

  1627. to play

  1628. it out

  1629. in our

  1630. life

  1631. and so

  1632. Lord

  1633. I pray

  1634. that you

  1635. would help

  1636. us to be

  1637. people

  1638. who are

  1639. devoted

  1640. to prayer

  1641. people who

  1642. are

  1643. dependent

  1644. on

  1645. you

  1646. to

  1647. accomplish

  1648. your

  1649. purposes

  1650. help

  1651. our

  1652. eyes

  1653. to

  1654. watch

  1655. for

  1656. your

  1657. working

  1658. because

  1659. you

  1660. are

  1661. working

  1662. help

  1663. us

  1664. to

  1665. see

  1666. it

  1667. and

  1668. to

  1669. be

  1670. thankful

  1671. for

  1672. it

  1673. Lord

  1674. thank

  1675. you

  1676. for

  1677. doors

  1678. that

  1679. are

  1680. open

  1681. and

  1682. God

  1683. I

  1684. pray

  1685. that

  1686. you

  1687. would

  1688. open

  1689. those

  1690. gospel

  1691. doors

  1692. to

  1693. us

  1694. and

  1695. that

  1696. we

  1697. with

  1698. courage

  1699. and

  1700. boldness

  1701. would

  1702. walk

  1703. through

  1704. those

  1705. doors

  1706. regardless

  1707. of the

  1708. potential

  1709. impact

  1710. in our

  1711. life

  1712. help us

  1713. to have

  1714. feet

  1715. that walk

  1716. in wisdom

  1717. in lips

  1718. that speak

  1719. with grace

  1720. oh God

  1721. may our

  1722. lives be

  1723. marked

  1724. with Jesus

  1725. through and

  1726. through

  1727. we pray

  1728. in your

  1729. name

  1730. amen

  1731. do
