  1. It's good to have all of you here this morning.

  2. We're going to go ahead and get started.

  3. I'll pray for us and then we'll begin the study.

  4. Father, I pray that you would go before us this morning.

  5. Thank you for the instruction that you've given to us in your word.

  6. Thank you for the promises that we have in the scripture,

  7. the guidance, the instruction,

  8. but most importantly, thank you for the power that we can enjoy

  9. through the Holy Spirit.

  10. And as we put your word to work in our lives,

  11. that we can experience the overcoming power of your spirit

  12. working through us to help accomplish the seemingly impossible.

  13. Of course, it is impossible without your help,

  14. but with your help, it is possible.

  15. And so we pray that you would guide us and direct us this morning

  16. in this study and throughout the next six weeks

  17. as we look into passions of the heart.

  18. I pray that you would be honored and glorified through our time together.

  19. In Jesus' name, amen.

  20. Well, I want to encourage you before we get started to,

  21. hopefully you all have one of these.

  22. And this is going to kind of be our tour guide,

  23. map as it were.

  24. And so as you think about the study and as we're working through this together,

  25. the goal is that we'll be doing this,

  26. hopefully interactively through this study guide

  27. and through some time of teaching

  28. and through some responses that we get.

  29. And I imagine that,

  30. let me, this is grabbing me.

  31. I imagine that some of you are wondering

  32. what in the world have we gotten ourselves into.

  33. And I want to say that,

  34. if you have a pen,

  35. it might be good to have a way to take some notes.

  36. Anyone need a pen?

  37. Okay.

  38. I'm going to give this to Stephen.

  39. And if you can be responsible for getting those out,

  40. that'd be great.

  41. Some of you may be wondering,

  42. what in the world have we gotten ourselves into?

  43. What is this going to be like?

  44. I've got some kids who are high schoolers,

  45. who are teenagers,

  46. and I'm a little concerned about the content.

  47. Maybe you've read the book,

  48. or you've heard about the book,

  49. and you're like,

  50. I'm not so sure my teens are ready for this subject matter.

  51. But going back several months now,

  52. the pastoral team and the leaders of the church,

  53. the deacons,

  54. have really felt like this is an essential matter.

  55. And not just because it addresses purity,

  56. sexual purity in that sense,

  57. but because it addresses kind of the foundations of living,

  58. the things that rule your heart,

  59. and that will set the course of activity for your life.

  60. And we find throughout the course of the Scripture,

  61. Old and New Testament alike,

  62. that the affections that we have,

  63. the desires that you have,

  64. those ruling desires and passions of your heart,

  65. is what's going to lead you to certain habits and patterns

  66. that may either lead to disaster in ruin for you,

  67. or will lead to life for you.

  68. And so this is the tipping point.

  69. This subject that we're talking about

  70. is really the essence of what God has called us to consider.

  71. That we think about the first and second great commands.

  72. What is that first and greatest command?

  73. To do what?

  74. To love the Lord your God.

  75. With all your what?

  76. Heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  77. If we want to worship God,

  78. and God has made us worshipers,

  79. and that's what we're going to kind of understand

  80. as we're working through this time together,

  81. if we're going to worship God truly,

  82. you have to worship God with your heart.

  83. You have to know what that kind of worship looks like.

  84. And so cultivating good heart patterns,

  85. cultivating good desires, good passions,

  86. are going to set the course for life for you.

  87. Whether you're going to live in jeopardy of spirituality,

  88. ruin, potential ruin, of your spiritual life,

  89. shipwreck, as it were,

  90. or you're going to enjoy the safety and security

  91. and life that God has called us to.

  92. And it starts with our heart.

  93. It starts with our passions.

  94. We think about the word passion.

  95. What are some other words that come to mind?

  96. What do you think of when you think of the word passion?

  97. Desires.

  98. Okay, that's a good word.

  99. Desires.

  100. Fundamentally, what you want, what you desire.

  101. Any other words that come to mind when you think of passion?

  102. What's that?

  103. Mastery.

  104. Now, that's an interesting word.

  105. Why did you think about mastery?

  106. Ah, fantastic.

  107. I love that.

  108. And that's not what I was thinking,

  109. but that hits the nail on the head.

  110. When you have a passion for something,

  111. you want to master it.

  112. You want to do your best at it.

  113. You put all your effort into it.

  114. Phenomenal.

  115. What else do you think of when you think of passion?

  116. Intensity.

  117. Okay.

  118. There's an intensity.

  119. There's a zeal.

  120. There's an interest, a desire of your heart to pursue something.

  121. Good.

  122. Any other words?

  123. Those are tremendous.

  124. Any other words that come to your mind?

  125. Love.

  126. Okay.

  127. Love and desire.

  128. That what we are passionate about

  129. helps us understand what you love.

  130. And fundamentally,

  131. what we're going to look at in just a moment here

  132. is what you desire,

  133. how you feel,

  134. what your emotions are telling you

  135. really are like the little gauges

  136. on the panel of your car

  137. that I always ignore

  138. because they're always on.

  139. But those light indicators on your car

  140. are like your emotions.

  141. Now, emotions aren't necessarily good or bad.

  142. Okay.

  143. That even what we would consider negative emotions,

  144. anger, frustration,

  145. discouragement,

  146. and despair,

  147. whatever you want to fill in.

  148. Even those quote-unquote negative emotions

  149. can lead you

  150. and are meant to lead you

  151. to God.

  152. They're meant to lead you to worship.

  153. Emotions can be good.

  154. But the problem is

  155. is when those emotions

  156. become controlling emotions,

  157. when they become the kinds of emotions

  158. that you might find yourself saying,

  159. well, I just can't control myself.

  160. Ever heard yourself say that?

  161. I just can't control myself.

  162. And so,

  163. as we think about

  164. passions of the heart,

  165. the reason why we've chosen this study

  166. is because we recognize

  167. the significance

  168. of those passions in your life

  169. that are going to lead you to something.

  170. They're going to set the course

  171. for the way you live,

  172. either for good or for bad.

  173. And we also understand

  174. that our culture,

  175. our culture,

  176. our culture wants to tune in

  177. to your emotions.

  178. They want to access your emotions

  179. and they want to drive them somewhere.

  180. They want to help you use those emotions

  181. in a way that are destructive

  182. and not life-giving.

  183. One such example,

  184. a popular song

  185. that's written in the last couple of years,

  186. written by Teddy Swims.

  187. Anyone know who Teddy Swims is?

  188. I did not know who Teddy Swims was

  189. and I didn't even know

  190. what this song was by its title,

  191. but I am sure

  192. that every single one of you

  193. have heard this song.

  194. It's called Lose Control.

  195. It was a song

  196. that was released in June of 2023

  197. and the song reached number one

  198. on the Billboard Hot 100 chart

  199. in March of 2024.

  200. And it holds the record

  201. for the longest charting song

  202. on the Billboard Hot 100

  203. with 112 non-consecutive weeks.

  204. 112 weeks.

  205. That's over two years

  206. it was on this list, okay?

  207. That's how popular this song is.

  208. That's how much this song

  209. engaged culture, okay?

  210. And it was in the,

  211. on this,

  212. it was a top 10 song

  213. for 80 weeks.

  214. 80 weeks.

  215. Well, let me just,

  216. I'm just gonna read a couple of the,

  217. not the choruses,

  218. but the refrains, okay?

  219. And there's,

  220. I'm gonna leave out certain parts,

  221. but here's kind of a sense of this song.

  222. It says this,

  223. something's got a hold on me lately.

  224. No, I don't know myself anymore.

  225. Feels like the walls are closing in

  226. and the devil's knocking at my door.

  227. Whoa.

  228. Out of my mind,

  229. how many times

  230. did I tell you

  231. I'm no good at being alone?

  232. Yeah, it's taken a toll on me,

  233. trying my best to keep

  234. from tearing the skin off my bones,

  235. don't you know?

  236. And then it says,

  237. I,

  238. something,

  239. I,

  240. what's that?

  241. I lose control.

  242. Something's,

  243. I don't lose control.

  244. Okay?

  245. That's the whole tenor of this song.

  246. And so,

  247. you know,

  248. I trust it's obvious, okay?

  249. This is not a song

  250. we're encouraging you to listen to necessarily,

  251. but it's just a song that's popular

  252. and it explains,

  253. it really explains

  254. kind of the,

  255. the heart

  256. of our culture today.

  257. And that is

  258. that

  259. this core idea

  260. is that the feelings

  261. don't just inform

  262. the way you live,

  263. your feelings drive,

  264. fundamentally drive

  265. the way you live.

  266. Your feelings control you,

  267. at least

  268. from a cultural perspective.

  269. Your feelings

  270. will,

  271. will take you up,

  272. will capture you

  273. and pull you along.

  274. And,

  275. and we've learned

  276. in culture

  277. that,

  278. that that's not just okay,

  279. that's just expected.

  280. That's what we expect

  281. to happen.

  282. And so,

  283. our,

  284. in our culture today,

  285. your feelings

  286. aren't just something

  287. that,

  288. that drive you,

  289. your feelings now become

  290. your identity.

  291. And so,

  292. how you feel

  293. then

  294. becomes

  295. who you are.

  296. and that's,

  297. that's the message

  298. of our culture.

  299. How many times

  300. have you heard,

  301. heard it said,

  302. or maybe even

  303. have said yourself,

  304. I can't help myself.

  305. I had no choice

  306. in the matter.

  307. It just happened.

  308. I couldn't stop it.

  309. That's just how it is.

  310. Ever said that?

  311. Or,

  312. or this identity language

  313. that says,

  314. well,

  315. this is just

  316. who I am.

  317. That's just

  318. my personality.

  319. I'm just being honest.

  320. Ever heard that?

  321. I'm just being honest.

  322. This is who I am.

  323. Or,

  324. or how about

  325. the permissive language

  326. that says,

  327. I deserve this.

  328. After all,

  329. it's,

  330. it's what I've been through.

  331. So,

  332. I'm allowed to feel this way.

  333. I'm allowed to respond this way.

  334. Or,

  335. don't judge me.

  336. Or,

  337. it's not really

  338. that big of a deal.

  339. Come on.

  340. Let it go.

  341. Give,

  342. give me some space.

  343. Or,

  344. or maybe this

  345. blame shifting language

  346. that says,

  347. it's actually

  348. your fault

  349. because you made me

  350. feel this way.

  351. Or,

  352. if you hadn't said that

  353. or done that,

  354. I would never

  355. have reacted this way.

  356. Or,

  357. you're the reason

  358. I'm like this.

  359. Or,

  360. it's your fault

  361. that I'm upset.

  362. Or,

  363. it's the woman

  364. you made.

  365. Or,

  366. it's the serpent.

  367. that you put in the garden.

  368. It's the age old problem

  369. where we explain away

  370. our responses

  371. based upon

  372. the way we feel.

  373. Or,

  374. this avoidance language.

  375. I just need some space.

  376. I can't talk about this right now.

  377. Just leave me alone.

  378. Or,

  379. justification

  380. in having the moral high ground

  381. that says,

  382. I'm only standing up for myself.

  383. I,

  384. I don't feel safe.

  385. And so,

  386. because I don't feel safe,

  387. that I'm acting this way.

  388. I'm just protecting

  389. myself.

  390. I'm setting

  391. my boundaries.

  392. I have every right

  393. to do this.

  394. Or,

  395. the kind of minimizing language

  396. that says,

  397. come on,

  398. you're overreacting.

  399. Or,

  400. it's not a big deal.

  401. Or,

  402. I was just joking.

  403. Come on.

  404. Give me a break.

  405. I didn't mean it like that.

  406. All of this,

  407. these words

  408. that we use

  409. to explain away

  410. or justify

  411. the way our feelings

  412. have driven us

  413. to act.

  414. And so,

  415. we create this space

  416. for ourselves

  417. to act a certain way

  418. because of how we feel.

  419. And that everyone needs

  420. to kind of clear

  421. the boundaries,

  422. clear the space for us

  423. because we feel this way

  424. and the way we feel now

  425. has set this,

  426. this identity for us

  427. that gives us

  428. the room,

  429. the justification

  430. to do whatever we want,

  431. whatever we feel.

  432. So,

  433. one of the biggest lies

  434. in our world

  435. is that

  436. our feelings

  437. are the truest things

  438. about ourselves.

  439. And that

  440. when our emotions

  441. like losing control

  442. are happening,

  443. it's just expected.

  444. You should just expect it.

  445. Give me some room.

  446. Give me a break.

  447. This is how it goes.

  448. Don't you understand?

  449. And even going back

  450. to the 1800s,

  451. this has kind of been

  452. the way that our culture

  453. has begun to feel.

  454. Those of you

  455. who have taken

  456. like literature,

  457. English literature,

  458. will know the name

  459. Ralph Waldo Emerson.

  460. And he wrote

  461. Self-Reliance.

  462. And the governing line

  463. of that entire poem

  464. is this,

  465. Trust thyself,

  466. never imitate.

  467. Trust yourself.

  468. Your emotions,

  469. your convictions,

  470. your identity,

  471. it's all that matters.

  472. Trust yourself.

  473. Don't imitate.

  474. Allow your life

  475. to be ruled

  476. by your emotions,

  477. how you feel,

  478. what you think,

  479. what you believe.

  480. And if we're honest

  481. with ourselves,

  482. we've all been influenced

  483. to think that way.

  484. We've all been conditioned

  485. to believe

  486. that how we feel,

  487. what our passions are,

  488. give us now

  489. the room

  490. to do whatever

  491. we want to do.

  492. And that's why

  493. this is so important.

  494. That's why

  495. when we look at

  496. the passions of the heart,

  497. we can understand

  498. it doesn't just

  499. relate to sexual purity.

  500. And there's going to be

  501. a lot of times

  502. where we're going to try

  503. to address that

  504. just generally

  505. but very carefully

  506. in this mixed audience.

  507. But I want you to understand

  508. that this is transcendent.

  509. That what you believe

  510. and what you feel

  511. are essential

  512. to how you live.

  513. And especially

  514. how you worship.

  515. Because what you feel

  516. is an indication

  517. not only of what you believe

  518. but what you value.

  519. What you think is important.

  520. And so

  521. those indicator lights

  522. when I'm angry,

  523. when I'm frustrated,

  524. even when I'm happy,

  525. when I'm excited

  526. about something,

  527. what am I excited about

  528. and how does that point

  529. and direct my heart

  530. to see

  531. what am I really worshipping?

  532. What do I really value?

  533. What do I really want

  534. in my life?

  535. And so right at the outset

  536. what I'd like to do

  537. I want to just encourage

  538. go ahead and open up

  539. your little

  540. your guides.

  541. Okay.

  542. And I want you to take

  543. a little personal

  544. self-inventory.

  545. Okay.

  546. And I say personal

  547. because

  548. I just want to encourage

  549. you to keep this private.

  550. Just between you

  551. and the Lord

  552. and as you're answering

  553. these questions

  554. I want you to be honest.

  555. Honest with yourself

  556. before the Lord

  557. as you kind of

  558. gauge

  559. and examine

  560. your emotions

  561. and how much

  562. your emotions

  563. drive the way you act.

  564. Okay.

  565. So we're going to spend

  566. the next

  567. five, ten minutes

  568. I want you to

  569. take out a pen

  570. if you don't have one

  571. we can get you one

  572. and do this self-inventory

  573. just to help drive home

  574. the point

  575. of how emotions

  576. have

  577. kind of

  578. driven the way

  579. that we act.

  580. So take your time

  581. and go ahead

  582. and do that right now.

  583. If you need

  584. one of those

  585. workbooks

  586. we can get you one

  587. just raise up your hand

  588. and we'll make sure

  589. you get one.

  590. I want you to

  591. one of those

  592. one of those

  593. two of those

  594. one of those

  595. one of those

  596. all right

  597. just another

  598. minute or two

  599. when you're done

  600. you can just go ahead

  601. and look up at me.

  602. and look at me.

  603. all right

  604. we almost done?

  605. A few more seconds.

  606. Okay.

  607. What did you learn?

  608. What did you learn

  609. about yourself?

  610. What did you learn

  611. about yourself?

  612. Maybe this is

  613. an easier question.

  614. of the little

  615. pieces in this

  616. inventory

  617. which

  618. which of those

  619. questions

  620. grabbed your attention

  621. the most?

  622. one?

  623. Any of those?

  624. Okay.

  625. Okay.

  626. Okay.

  627. My identity is found by my emotions.

  628. Yeah.

  629. Yeah.

  630. Yeah, right.

  631. So, you know,

  632. you're working through this

  633. initially like

  634. I don't find my identity

  635. in my

  636. in my desires

  637. but then you're like

  638. well then

  639. you come to anger

  640. and you come to fear

  641. and you come to anxiety

  642. and you come to pressure

  643. and you're like

  644. ah, well then

  645. maybe I'm actually

  646. a little bit more driven

  647. by my emotions

  648. than I think I am.

  649. Right?

  650. That's true.

  651. Good.

  652. I appreciate that.

  653. And by the way

  654. this was

  655. this was pretty

  656. pretty convicting

  657. for me too.

  658. When we think about

  659. emotions

  660. or we think about

  661. passions

  662. we generally

  663. tend to think about

  664. those passions

  665. that lead us to

  666. sexual

  667. problems.

  668. Okay.

  669. But

  670. we

  671. we understand

  672. that

  673. feelings

  674. and emotions

  675. and passions

  676. are much broader

  677. than that.

  678. Right?

  679. Any other

  680. of the

  681. of the

  682. questions

  683. that kind of

  684. grabbed your

  685. attention?

  686. Anyone else

  687. want to be honest?

  688. Good.

  689. How about

  690. this one?

  691. This is

  692. this is

  693. one that

  694. that

  695. resonated in my

  696. heart.

  697. Work pressures

  698. increase my

  699. anger or

  700. irritability.

  701. Now

  702. my wife can

  703. attest to that

  704. and hopefully

  705. you don't see

  706. that very much

  707. but she does.

  708. Okay.

  709. When

  710. when pressure

  711. and doesn't

  712. necessarily have

  713. to be work

  714. pressure

  715. when family

  716. pressure

  717. work

  718. pressure

  719. financial

  720. pressure

  721. health

  722. pressure

  723. whatever that

  724. pressure is

  725. when it comes

  726. pressing down

  727. then the

  728. then the real

  729. me tends

  730. to

  731. to show up.

  732. This

  733. what is it

  734. about

  735. me

  736. that is so

  737. small

  738. in faith

  739. I

  740. I

  741. I

  742. I

  743. I

  744. see

  745. my

  746. flaws

  747. so much

  748. clearer

  749. when

  750. the pressure

  751. mounts

  752. and the

  753. pressure cooker

  754. is

  755. is doing

  756. its work

  757. and I

  758. see the

  759. true me

  760. and it's

  761. not necessarily

  762. a pretty me

  763. and I imagine

  764. the same is true

  765. in your own life

  766. as well.

  767. You get to see

  768. the real you

  769. when things are hard

  770. when the pressure

  771. intensifies

  772. and you

  773. recognize

  774. that

  775. that

  776. that

  777. whatever

  778. your escape

  779. mechanism is

  780. whether that's

  781. to check out

  782. and do nothing

  783. whether that's

  784. to tap into

  785. leisure

  786. or to tap

  787. into friendships

  788. or to

  789. or to

  790. to work

  791. harder

  792. or to strive

  793. more

  794. whatever that

  795. whatever that

  796. that release

  797. or escape

  798. mechanism is

  799. that happens

  800. as you

  801. as the pressure

  802. cooker

  803. is

  804. pressing in

  805. it's cooking

  806. hard

  807. so what does

  808. this say

  809. about our

  810. heart

  811. and that's

  812. kind of

  813. this next

  814. section

  815. and I want

  816. to

  817. I'll just

  818. kind of

  819. walk through

  820. this with

  821. you

  822. briefly

  823. and I

  824. we have

  825. a little

  826. section here

  827. where you can

  828. you can take

  829. some notes

  830. what do you

  831. learn about

  832. the heart

  833. okay so

  834. as we're

  835. working through

  836. this

  837. just kind of

  838. interacting

  839. with one

  840. another

  841. over this

  842. this would

  843. be your

  844. place to

  845. kind of

  846. take some

  847. notes

  848. for yourself

  849. this personal

  850. self inventory

  851. that now

  852. kind of leads

  853. into

  854. okay so

  855. how does

  856. God instruct

  857. me

  858. as I'm

  859. becoming

  860. very aware

  861. of my

  862. feelings

  863. and my

  864. emotions

  865. now how

  866. do I

  867. examine

  868. myself

  869. or how do

  870. I allow

  871. the word

  872. of God

  873. to examine

  874. my life

  875. and provide

  876. the road map

  877. for me

  878. on how I

  879. should live

  880. how I should

  881. respond

  882. and what's

  883. normal

  884. in the course

  885. of a spiritual

  886. life

  887. okay

  888. so

  889. we find

  890. some passages

  891. and there's

  892. more than we

  893. can access

  894. in our

  895. time

  896. together

  897. but

  898. some

  899. key

  900. passages

  901. that help

  902. to kind

  903. of set

  904. the course

  905. for understanding

  906. the heart

  907. that the

  908. issue of the

  909. heart goes

  910. all the way

  911. back to

  912. Genesis

  913. and we see

  914. this in

  915. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  916. 6

  917. it says

  918. the Lord

  919. saw the

  920. wickedness

  921. of man

  922. was great

  923. in the

  924. earth

  925. and that

  926. every

  927. intention

  928. of the

  929. thought

  930. of his

  931. heart

  932. was only

  933. evil

  934. continually

  935. what do

  936. we learn

  937. about this

  938. what does

  939. this

  940. what does

  941. this say

  942. about our

  943. normal

  944. human

  945. condition

  946. the condition

  947. of our

  948. heart

  949. what is it

  950. generally

  951. what's that

  952. it's only

  953. evil

  954. continually

  955. okay

  956. and how

  957. deep

  958. is the

  959. problem

  960. how does

  961. how does

  962. Moses

  963. through

  964. I think

  965. of course

  966. the Lord

  967. is the

  968. one

  969. speaking

  970. through

  971. Moses

  972. writing

  973. this

  974. down

  975. what is

  976. how does

  977. he describe

  978. the depth

  979. of the

  980. problem

  981. here

  982. it's all

  983. inclusive

  984. okay

  985. that every

  986. thought

  987. of all

  988. the time

  989. is only

  990. evil

  991. there's no

  992. spark of

  993. goodness

  994. at all

  995. in their

  996. heart

  997. evil is

  998. rooted in

  999. the heart

  1000. that's a

  1001. great way

  1002. to summarize

  1003. that

  1004. David

  1005. that's our

  1006. condition

  1007. that's your

  1008. heart

  1009. that's my

  1010. heart

  1011. our heart

  1012. is only

  1013. evil

  1014. continually

  1015. given

  1016. the

  1017. permission

  1018. of God

  1019. to

  1020. the

  1021. unrestrained

  1022. passions of

  1023. our heart

  1024. always lead

  1025. us

  1026. to reject

  1027. God in

  1028. every way

  1029. every

  1030. intention

  1031. of your

  1032. heart

  1033. is only

  1034. evil

  1035. continually

  1036. unless it's

  1037. brought

  1038. into

  1039. alignment

  1040. with God

  1041. and is

  1042. accessing

  1043. his power

  1044. okay

  1045. that's the

  1046. bad news

  1047. okay

  1048. but there's

  1049. some good

  1050. news

  1051. and we're

  1052. gonna get

  1053. there

  1054. eventually

  1055. here

  1056. Proverbs

  1057. 16

  1058. 9

  1059. says

  1060. the heart

  1061. of man

  1062. plans

  1063. his way

  1064. but the

  1065. Lord

  1066. establishes

  1067. his steps

  1068. now why

  1069. is that

  1070. important

  1071. how does

  1072. that help

  1073. us to

  1074. understand

  1075. how things

  1076. should work

  1077. normally in the

  1078. course of

  1079. our heart

  1080. condition

  1081. and especially

  1082. when our

  1083. heart desires

  1084. to do the

  1085. things of the

  1086. Lord

  1087. what do we

  1088. learn about

  1089. the heart

  1090. here in

  1091. this verse

  1092. what do you

  1093. see

  1094. okay

  1095. that's good

  1096. our heart

  1097. is our

  1098. planning center

  1099. and by the

  1100. way

  1101. that is

  1102. good

  1103. okay

  1104. it is good

  1105. when your

  1106. heart

  1107. desires

  1108. things

  1109. it is good

  1110. when your

  1111. heart

  1112. plans

  1113. things

  1114. the

  1115. strategy

  1116. though

  1117. the key

  1118. is

  1119. is to

  1120. allow

  1121. God

  1122. to

  1123. govern

  1124. the

  1125. actual

  1126. outworkings

  1127. of

  1128. your

  1129. plans

  1130. so you

  1131. hold

  1132. those

  1133. plans

  1134. those

  1135. desires

  1136. with an

  1137. open

  1138. hand

  1139. and you

  1140. let God

  1141. guide and

  1142. direct

  1143. the steps

  1144. that you

  1145. take

  1146. and by the

  1147. way

  1148. you allow

  1149. God

  1150. to

  1151. fundamentally

  1152. change

  1153. those

  1154. desires

  1155. so that

  1156. they're in

  1157. line

  1158. alignment

  1159. with

  1160. his

  1161. desires

  1162. desires

  1163. can be

  1164. good

  1165. they're not

  1166. always

  1167. bad

  1168. and so

  1169. we need

  1170. to allow

  1171. God

  1172. to

  1173. govern

  1174. our

  1175. desires

  1176. chapter 10

  1177. verses 9

  1178. to 10

  1179. says

  1180. because

  1181. if you

  1182. confess

  1183. with your

  1184. mouth

  1185. that

  1186. Jesus

  1187. is

  1188. Lord

  1189. and

  1190. believe

  1191. in

  1192. your

  1193. heart

  1194. that

  1195. God

  1196. raised

  1197. him

  1198. from

  1199. the

  1200. dead

  1201. you

  1202. will

  1203. be

  1204. saved

  1205. for

  1206. with

  1207. the

  1208. heart

  1209. one

  1210. believes

  1211. and

  1212. is

  1213. justified

  1214. and

  1215. with

  1216. the

  1217. mouth

  1218. one

  1219. confesses

  1220. and

  1221. is

  1222. saved

  1223. why

  1224. is that

  1225. important

  1226. what is

  1227. our

  1228. heart

  1229. doing

  1230. there

  1231. why

  1232. is

  1233. this

  1234. a

  1235. good

  1236. expression

  1237. of

  1238. the

  1239. heart

  1240. why

  1241. is

  1242. this

  1243. encouraging

  1244. !

  1245. for

  1246. us

  1247. especially

  1248. in light

  1249. of

  1250. Genesis

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  1251. chapter 6

  1252. okay

  1253. because

  1254. through

  1255. through

  1256. godly

  1257. desires

  1258. God

  1259. shapes

  1260. our

  1261. heart

  1262. to

  1263. want

  1264. the

  1265. right

  1266. things

  1267. and

  1268. to

  1269. enjoy

  1270. him

  1271. okay

  1272. God

  1273. wants

  1274. to

  1275. take

  1276. our

  1277. heart

  1278. he

  1279. wants

  1280. to

  1281. shape

  1282. it

  1283. and

  1284. move

  1285. it

  1286. in

  1287. the

  1288. right

  1289. direction

  1290. and

  1291. and

  1292. it

  1293. really

  1294. begins

  1295. with

  1296. believing

  1297. our

  1298. heart

  1299. that

  1300. confesses

  1301. and

  1302. believes

  1303. and

  1304. trusts

  1305. and

  1306. and

  1307. then

  1308. now

  1309. our

  1310. affections

  1311. are

  1312. stirred

  1313. and

  1314. begin

  1315. to

  1316. move

  1317. in the

  1318. direction

  1319. of

  1320. God

  1321. and so

  1322. real

  1323. worship

  1324. can

  1325. begin

  1326. to take

  1327. place

  1328. in

  1329. Matthew

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  1330. chapter

  1331. 22

  1332. 36

  1333. to

  1334. 40

  1335. it

  1336. says

  1337. teacher

  1338. which

  1339. is

  1340. the

  1341. great

  1342. commandment

  1343. and

  1344. he

  1345. said

  1346. to

  1347. them

  1348. you

  1349. shall

  1350. love

  1351. the

  1352. Lord

  1353. your

  1354. God

  1355. with

  1356. all

  1357. your

  1358. heart

  1359. and

  1360. with

  1361. all

  1362. your

  1363. soul

  1364. and

  1365. all

  1366. your

  1367. mind

  1368. this

  1369. is

  1370. the

  1371. great

  1372. and

  1373. first

  1374. commandment

  1375. and

  1376. a

  1377. second

  1378. is

  1379. like

  1380. it

  1381. you

  1382. shall

  1383. love

  1384. your

  1385. neighbor

  1386. as

  1387. yourself

  1388. on

  1389. these

  1390. two

  1391. commands

  1392. !

  1393. depend

  1394. all

  1395. the

  1396. law

  1397. and

  1398. the

  1399. prophets

  1400. !

  1401. I mean

  1402. I'm

  1403. going to

  1404. put

  1405. this

  1406. way

  1407. and

  1408. this

  1409. may

  1410. I'll

  1411. try

  1412. to

  1413. qualify

  1414. this

  1415. I

  1416. want

  1417. to

  1418. say

  1419. emotions

  1420. in

  1421. and

  1422. of

  1423. themselves

  1424. are

  1425. neutral

  1426. okay

  1427. even

  1428. anger

  1429. and

  1430. frustration

  1431. and

  1432. discontentment

  1433. can be

  1434. somewhat

  1435. neutral

  1436. as long

  1437. as those

  1438. emotions

  1439. are driving

  1440. you in

  1441. the right

  1442. direction

  1443. okay

  1444. that God

  1445. isn't

  1446. God

  1447. isn't

  1448. alarmed

  1449. when

  1450. all

  1451. of

  1452. a

  1453. sudden

  1454. we're

  1455. frustrated

  1456. about

  1457. something

  1458. it's

  1459. just

  1460. what

  1461. do

  1462. we

  1463. do

  1464. with

  1465. that

  1466. frustration

  1467. what

  1468. do

  1469. we

  1470. do

  1471. with

  1472. that

  1473. fear

  1474. what

  1475. do

  1476. we

  1477. do

  1478. with

  1479. that

  1480. anxiety

  1481. what

  1482. do

  1483. we

  1484. do

  1485. with

  1486. those

  1487. feelings

  1488. of

  1489. despair

  1490. do

  1491. they

  1492. drive

  1493. us

  1494. to

  1495. God

  1496. or

  1497. do

  1498. they

  1499. drive

  1500. us

  1501. away

  1502. from

  1503. God

  1504. that

  1505. is

  1506. really

  1507. what's

  1508. important

  1509. so

  1510. feelings

  1511. in

  1512. and of

  1513. themselves

  1514. are

  1515. neutral

  1516. until

  1517. they

  1518. take

  1519. flight

  1520. in

  1521. moving

  1522. us

  1523. in

  1524. a

  1525. certain

  1526. direction

  1527. and

  1528. if

  1529. your

  1530. negative

  1531. emotions

  1532. move

  1533. you

  1534. to

  1535. God

  1536. then

  1537. that's

  1538. exactly

  1539. what

  1540. emotions

  1541. are

  1542. meant

  1543. to

  1544. do

  1545. and

  1546. and

  1547. then

  1548. God

  1549. begins

  1550. to

  1551. take

  1552. those

  1553. emotions

  1554. he

  1555. begins

  1556. to

  1557. to

  1558. to

  1559. move

  1560. those

  1561. emotions

  1562. around

  1563. and

  1564. to

  1565. help

  1566. us

  1567. to

  1568. become

  1569. secure

  1570. in

  1571. him

  1572. even

  1573. when

  1574. we

  1575. feel

  1576. like

  1577. in

  1578. our

  1579. emotional

  1580. turmoil

  1581. we're

  1582. just

  1583. like

  1584. I

  1585. don't

  1586. know

  1587. what

  1588. to

  1589. do

  1590. and

  1591. God

  1592. takes

  1593. those

  1594. emotions

  1595. he

  1596. begins

  1597. to

  1598. change

  1599. them

  1600. and

  1601. help

  1602. us

  1603. to

  1604. trust

  1605. him

  1606. and

  1607. worship

  1608. him

  1609. as

  1610. he

  1611. desires

  1612. so

  1613. what

  1614. does

  1615. our

  1616. heart

  1617. require

  1618. what

  1619. do

  1620. we

  1621. need

  1622. fundamentally

  1623. what

  1624. do

  1625. our

  1626. hearts

  1627. need

  1628. and that's

  1629. this next

  1630. section

  1631. what does

  1632. God

  1633. do

  1634. and here's

  1635. the

  1636. beautiful

  1637. truth

  1638. for us

  1639. Ezekiel

  1640. 36

  1641. 22

  1642. 25

  1643. to

  1644. 27

  1645. it says

  1646. therefore

  1647. say to

  1648. the house

  1649. of Israel

  1650. thus

  1651. says

  1652. the

  1653. Lord

  1654. God

  1655. it is

  1656. not

  1657. for

  1658. your

  1659. sake

  1660. O

  1661. house

  1662. of

  1663. Israel

  1664. that

  1665. I'm

  1666. about

  1667. to

  1668. act

  1669. but

  1670. for

  1671. the

  1672. sake

  1673. of

  1674. my

  1675. holy

  1676. name

  1677. okay

  1678. now

  1679. let's

  1680. just

  1681. pause

  1682. there

  1683. for

  1684. a

  1685. moment

  1686. what

  1687. did

  1688. God

  1689. just

  1690. say

  1691. what

  1692. did

  1693. you

  1694. hear

  1695. summarize

  1696. this

  1697. for

  1698. me

  1699. what's

  1700. there

  1701. that's

  1702. good

  1703. it is

  1704. not

  1705. about

  1706. !

  1707. you

  1708. it's

  1709. about

  1710. me

  1711. I

  1712. am

  1713. !

  1714. doing

  1715. this

  1716. for

  1717. you

  1718. what

  1719. I'm

  1720. about

  1721. to

  1722. do

  1723. I'm

  1724. going

  1725. to

  1726. do

  1727. for

  1728. my

  1729. glory

  1730. I'm

  1731. going

  1732. to

  1733. do

  1734. for

  1735. my

  1736. renown

  1737. I'm

  1738. going

  1739. to

  1740. do

  1741. to

  1742. set

  1743. my

  1744. name

  1745. above

  1746. the

  1747. heavens

  1748. where

  1749. it

  1750. belongs

  1751. and

  1752. for

  1753. you

  1754. to

  1755. revere

  1756. me

  1757. the

  1758. way

  1759. that

  1760. I

  1761. deserve

  1762. I'm

  1763. going

  1764. to

  1765. do

  1766. something

  1767. it's

  1768. going

  1769. to

  1770. blow

  1771. you

  1772. away

  1773. but

  1774. I'm

  1775. not

  1776. doing

  1777. this

  1778. because

  1779. I want

  1780. you to

  1781. feel

  1782. !

  1783. necessarily

  1784. I'm

  1785. doing

  1786. this

  1787. because

  1788. I

  1789. want

  1790. you

  1791. to

  1792. look

  1793. at

  1794. me

  1795. and

  1796. worship

  1797. me

  1798. the

  1799. way

  1800. I

  1801. deserve

  1802. so

  1803. what

  1804. is

  1805. he

  1806. going

  1807. to

  1808. do

  1809. let's

  1810. look

  1811. at

  1812. this

  1813. verse

  1814. 25

  1815. is

  1816. that

  1817. 25

  1818. put

  1819. my

  1820. glasses

  1821. on

  1822. 25

  1823. I

  1824. will

  1825. sprinkle

  1826. clean

  1827. water

  1828. on

  1829. you

  1830. and

  1831. you

  1832. shall

  1833. be

  1834. clean

  1835. from

  1836. all

  1837. your

  1838. uncleanness

  1839. and

  1840. from

  1841. all

  1842. your

  1843. idols

  1844. I

  1845. will

  1846. cleanse

  1847. you

  1848. and

  1849. I

  1850. will

  1851. give

  1852. you

  1853. a

  1854. new

  1855. what

  1856. church

  1857. heart

  1858. hallelujah

  1859. a new

  1860. heart

  1861. and

  1862. a

  1863. new

  1864. spirit

  1865. I

  1866. will

  1867. put

  1868. within

  1869. you

  1870. and

  1871. I

  1872. will

  1873. remove

  1874. the

  1875. heart

  1876. of

  1877. stone

  1878. from

  1879. your

  1880. flesh

  1881. and

  1882. give

  1883. you

  1884. a

  1885. heart

  1886. of

  1887. flesh

  1888. and

  1889. I

  1890. will

  1891. put

  1892. my

  1893. spirit

  1894. within

  1895. you

  1896. and

  1897. cause

  1898. you

  1899. to

  1900. walk

  1901. in

  1902. my

  1903. statutes

  1904. and

  1905. careful

  1906. to

  1907. obey

  1908. my

  1909. rules

  1910. what's

  1911. the

  1912. good

  1913. news

  1914. about

  1915. that

  1916. verse

  1917. what's

  1918. the

  1919. good

  1920. news

  1921. regeneration

  1922. okay

  1923. that's a

  1924. fancy

  1925. word

  1926. for

  1927. make

  1928. us

  1929. new

  1930. okay

  1931. why

  1932. else

  1933. is that

  1934. good

  1935. news

  1936. well

  1937. really

  1938. personalize

  1939. this

  1940. okay

  1941. make

  1942. this

  1943. super

  1944. personal

  1945. why

  1946. is it

  1947. good

  1948. news

  1949. for

  1950. you

  1951. what's

  1952. that

  1953. God's

  1954. the one

  1955. doing

  1956. the

  1957. action

  1958. why

  1959. is that

  1960. good

  1961. news

  1962. for

  1963. you

  1964. David

  1965. it's

  1966. not

  1967. about

  1968. you

  1969. it's

  1970. about

  1971. God

  1972. why

  1973. else

  1974. is this

  1975. good

  1976. news

  1977. for

  1978. you

  1979. you

  1980. need

  1981. it

  1982. that's

  1983. right

  1984. the

  1985. longer

  1986. we

  1987. live

  1988. the

  1989. more

  1990. we

  1991. understand

  1992. how

  1993. broken

  1994. we

  1995. are

  1996. how

  1997. desperate

  1998. we

  1999. are

  2000. and

  2001. how

  2002. much

  2003. we

  2004. need

  2005. the

  2006. Lord

  2007. and

  2008. how

  2009. much

  2010. of a

  2011. mess

  2012. we

  2013. make

  2014. of

  2015. things

  2016. and

  2017. it's

  2018. good

  2019. news

  2020. because

  2021. God

  2022. takes

  2023. the

  2024. mess

  2025. maker

  2026. heart

  2027. and

  2028. he

  2029. not

  2030. just

  2031. cleans

  2032. it

  2033. up

  2034. a

  2035. little

  2036. bit

  2037. he

  2038. makes

  2039. it

  2040. brand

  2041. new

  2042. what

  2043. an

  2044. incredible

  2045. encouragement

  2046. what a

  2047. blessing

  2048. that is

  2049. for us

  2050. he makes

  2051. it

  2052. new

  2053. and so

  2054. David

  2055. this is

  2056. the spirit

  2057. of David

  2058. the psalmist

  2059. based upon

  2060. the promise

  2061. that's given

  2062. now David

  2063. he's able

  2064. to pray

  2065. this

  2066. create

  2067. in me

  2068. a clean

  2069. heart

  2070. oh

  2071. God

  2072. renew

  2073. a

  2074. right

  2075. spirit

  2076. within

  2077. me

  2078. for

  2079. you

  2080. will

  2081. not

  2082. delight

  2083. in

  2084. sacrifices

  2085. or I

  2086. would

  2087. give

  2088. it

  2089. you

  2090. will

  2091. not

  2092. be

  2093. pleased

  2094. with

  2095. burnt

  2096. offerings

  2097. the

  2098. sacrifices

  2099. of

  2100. God

  2101. are

  2102. a

  2103. broken

  2104. spirit

  2105. and

  2106. a

  2107. contrite

  2108. heart

  2109. oh

  2110. God

  2111. you

  2112. will

  2113. not

  2114. despise

  2115. did

  2116. you catch

  2117. that

  2118. not only

  2119. do we need

  2120. to pray

  2121. that God

  2122. will

  2123. create

  2124. within

  2125. us

  2126. a

  2127. clean

  2128. heart

  2129. but

  2130. David

  2131. comes

  2132. to

  2133. understand

  2134. that

  2135. if

  2136. true

  2137. worship

  2138. is

  2139. ever

  2140. going

  2141. to

  2142. happen

  2143. and

  2144. maybe

  2145. I

  2146. ought to

  2147. put

  2148. it

  2149. this

  2150. way

  2151. fundamentally

  2152. you

  2153. were

  2154. made

  2155. to be

  2156. a

  2157. worshipper

  2158. and

  2159. so

  2160. you

  2161. will

  2162. not

  2163. perform

  2164. the

  2165. purpose

  2166. for

  2167. which

  2168. you're

  2169. made

  2170. unless

  2171. you

  2172. worship

  2173. with

  2174. a

  2175. clean

  2176. heart

  2177. and

  2178. that's

  2179. what

  2180. David

  2181. is

  2182. coming

  2183. to

  2184. the

  2185. sacrifices

  2186. of

  2187. God

  2188. they're

  2189. not

  2190. bulls

  2191. and goats

  2192. and

  2193. rams

  2194. and all

  2195. of

  2196. this

  2197. these

  2198. blood

  2199. sacrifices

  2200. it's

  2201. not

  2202. the

  2203. performance

  2204. that you

  2205. bring

  2206. to the

  2207. table

  2208. no

  2209. it's

  2210. a

  2211. broken

  2212. heart

  2213. and

  2214. it's

  2215. a

  2216. broken

  2217. heart

  2218. by the

  2219. way

  2220. that

  2221. God

  2222. gives

  2223. you

  2224. it's

  2225. a

  2226. new

  2227. heart

  2228. that

  2229. God

  2230. wants

  2231. to

  2232. bless

  2233. you

  2234. with

  2235. and

  2236. so

  2237. as

  2238. we

  2239. come

  2240. with

  2241. that

  2242. broken

  2243. and

  2244. contrite

  2245. heart

  2246. then we

  2247. can

  2248. begin

  2249. to

  2250. worship

  2251. God

  2252. in a

  2253. way

  2254. that

  2255. he's

  2256. pleased

  2257. with

  2258. so

  2259. I

  2260. want to

  2261. take

  2262. just a

  2263. couple

  2264. moments

  2265. right

  2266. now

  2267. and

  2268. I

  2269. want

  2270. you

  2271. just

  2272. between

  2273. yourself

  2274. and

  2275. the

  2276. Lord

  2277. right

  2278. in

  2279. this

  2280. moment

  2281. ask

  2282. God

  2283. to

  2284. do

  2285. that

  2286. for

  2287. you

  2288. okay

  2289. just

  2290. going to

  2291. take

  2292. a

  2293. couple

  2294. moments

  2295. just

  2296. you

  2297. and

  2298. the

  2299. Lord

  2300. God

  2301. do

  2302. this

  2303. for

  2304. me

  2305. I

  2306. need

  2307. a

  2308. !

  2309. heart

  2310. out

2311. Father, thank you that you not only delight

2312. in clean hearts, but that you give them.

2313. You give them of your own accord.

2314. And so Lord, I pray for each of us,

2315. all of us in this room this morning,

2316. that you would help us not only to understand

2317. the significance of a clean heart,

2318. but that you would help us to press in

2319. and to desire and crave that renewed heart

2320. that comes day by day through your mercy and grace.

  2321. In Jesus' name, amen.

  2322. There's a problem though, okay?

2323. We know we need to have a clean heart.

2324. We know that our hearts are often out of bounds,

2325. but there's an issue, okay?

  2326. And here's the issue.

  2327. Proverbs 26, is it 26 or 28?

  2328. Sorry.

  2329. 28, 26.

  2330. Someone read that.

2331. Jack, read that out loud for me.

2332. He who trusts in his own heart is a fool,

2333. that whoever walks wisely will be the Lord.

  2334. Okay.

  2335. David, read that again.

  2336. Do you have that?

  2337. Yep.

  2338. Sure.

2339. He who trusts in his own heart is a fool,

2340. but whoever walks wisely will be the Lord.

2341. Elliot, read that for me.

2342. He who trusts in his own heart is a fool,

2343. but whoever walks wisely will be the Lord.

2344. Alex, can you read that?

2345. He who trusts in his own heart is a fool,

2346. whoever walks wisely will be the Lord.

  2347. How does deliverance come?

  2348. Not from the heart.

2349. Well, it doesn't come in trusting the heart, right?

2350. You trust in your heart,

  2351. you're asking for trouble.

2352. And the language is really severe.

2353. I mean, who wants to be called a fool?

  2354. You're an idiot.

  2355. That's the modern nomenclature.

2356. What are you thinking about?

2357. How stupid could you be?

  2358. Don't trust your heart.

  2359. It's foolish.

  2360. It's ignorant.

  2361. It's dumb.

  2362. It's stupid.

  2363. Don't be foolish.

  2364. And why?

  2365. Well, because in Jeremiah 17, 9 and 10,

2366. it says the heart is deceitful.

2367. The heart wants to trick you.

2368. And let me tell you,

2369. all of us are fooled by our heart.

  2370. Okay?

2371. We're so fooled by our heart.

2372. We give ourselves a pass far too often

2373. because we see things about our heart

2374. we want to be true, but are not true.

  2375. And so we're deceived.

  2376. Okay?

  2377. We're lied to.

2378. And our heart is desperately wicked.

  2379. Who can know it?

2380. I, the Lord, search the heart.

  2381. I test the mind.

2382. Even to give every man according to his ways,

2383. according to the fruit of his doings.

2384. So that's the danger here, right?

2385. You trust your untrustworthy heart.

2386. God is the one who judges that heart

2387. and God is the one who will bring

2388. to pass the things that our heart

  2389. leads us to do.

2390. And so those actions will be judged

2391. once our heart leads us in a certain direction.

2392. And God is the judge of our heart.

2393. And God will not let us get away

2394. with the things our heart wants to do.

  2395. Proverbs 16, 25.

2396. There is a way that seems right to a man,

2397. but the end of that way is death.

  2398. Okay.

2399. So, let's just pause for a moment.

2400. And what do we learn in here?

2401. What do we learn about our heart?

2402. What do we need to,

  2403. as we're navigating this

2404. and we understand the significance

2405. of it being the control center of our lives

2406. and directs the things that we do,

2407. what do we need to understand about our heart

2408. and then how that will then help to align

2409. and regulate the decisions that we make?

  2410. What do you think?

  2411. Okay.

2412. Don't lean on your own understanding.

  2413. And to keep going,

  2414. in all your ways,

  2415. acknowledge him.

2416. He will make your path straight.

  2417. That's the answer, right?

2418. The answer is not to trust in your own ways.

2419. Not to trust in your own path,

2420. but to find a way

2421. to understand the path that God has set for us

2422. and that we're going to let his path

  2423. direct our steps.

2424. He will make it straight.

  2425. Good.

  2426. What else you learn?

  2427. That's good.

  2428. That's good.

  2429. That's good.

2430. Man, you just crushed me right now.

  2431. I can't follow my heart.

  2432. I just, wow.

  2433. Disney, poof.

  2434. That's true.

  2435. That's good.

  2436. Thank you.

  2437. What else?

  2438. Okay.

2439. If it moves you toward God in activity,

  2440. that's what it is.

  2441. Okay.

  2442. It moves you away

2443. because a lot of times,

2444. you know good and evil.

2445. But you really have to,

2446. if this is moving me away from God,

2447. that should be a red flag.

  2448. Okay, good.

  2449. So, that's a great summary, Jack.

2450. If it moves me away from God,

2451. then it's fundamentally having the wrong effect on my heart.

  2452. Right?

2453. My heart is out of sync.

2454. Now, here's where the real danger comes into play.

2455. The real danger is what we see in the Pharisees.

  2456. Right?

2457. They were really close to God.

  2458. They really loved God.

  2459. They really obeyed God.

  2460. They really followed God.

2461. They were really zealous and passionate for the things of God.

2462. And I put that in air quotes

2463. because we know the reality, right?

2464. How deceptive the heart can be.

2465. They thought they were checking those boxes.

2466. They thought they were doing the right things.

2467. They thought they were worshiping God

2468. till the day is long.

2469. They thought they were doing exactly what God wanted.

  2470. But they were wrong.

  2471. They were wrong.

2472. Because they didn't understand the heart of God.

  2473. Right?

2474. And it was their own heart and passions and idols and cravings

  2475. that were driving, really,

  2476. fueling those inward desires.

  2477. Okay.

2478. So, what do we do?

  2479. Okay.

2480. If we can't trust our heart,

2481. then what are we left with?

  2482. Now it's just like,

  2483. oh, I guess it's all hopeless.

  2484. I guess we can't do anything.

2485. I guess we need to abandon all this effort

2486. and just forget about it.

  2487. No.

  2488. That's not the answer.

2489. And just for the next few moments,

2490. I want to just take us to 2 Corinthians 7,

    2 Corinthians 7:9–11

  2491. verses 9 to 11.

  2492. Okay?

2493. And we're going to see that there is a way

2494. that we need to actively calibrate our hearts.

2495. We need to actively pursue realignment of our hearts to God.

2496. And how does that happen?

2497. Well, it happens through repentance.

  2498. Okay?

2499. It happens through having this personal,

  2500. humble self-evaluation

2501. that is honest with God

  2502. and broken.

2503. This contrite spirit and broken heart

2504. that the psalmist talks about.

2505. That's the kind of heart the Lord will not despise.

2506. So, what does that look like?

  2507. Well, I think

2508. it can be really summarized well here.

2509. And I think this is important for us to kind of take away.

2510. We'll build on this as we continue to work through this content.

2511. But it's important for us to understand

2512. the difference between godly sorrow

  2513. and worldly sorrow.

  2514. Okay?

  2515. When you get caught,

  2516. my guess is

2517. that 999 of us out of 1,000

2518. are going to feel bad about it.

  2519. Okay?

2520. But is that driven by godly sorrow?

2521. Or is that driven by worldly sorrow?

2522. Let me just read this verse.

  2523. We'll break it apart.

2524. We'll talk about it for just a few minutes.

2525. And then we'll be done.

  2526. Okay?

  2527. 2 Corinthians 7, verses 9 to 11 says this.

    2 Corinthians 7:9–11

  2528. As it is,

  2529. this is Paul speaking.

2530. He's writing to the church of Corinth.

  2531. And I'm sorry,

2532. let me just give you a tad bit of background.

  2533. Okay?

2534. If you go all the way back to Paul's first letter to Corinth,

2535. which I think is actually his second letter.

2536. We don't have his first letter,

  2537. but that's not a matter.

  2538. 1 Corinthians 5,

2539. Paul talks about this brother in the church

2540. who was caught in sexual immorality.

  2541. Remember?

  2542. Okay?

2543. And the church thought they were being tolerant.

2544. They thought they were being gracious

2545. by putting up with it.

2546. And the apostle Paul says,

  2547. what is your problem?

  2548. Not even the Gentiles,

2549. not even the world thinks or acts this way.

2550. You've got to discipline this guy.

2551. You've got to help him understand

2552. the significance of his sin.

2553. You've got to boot him out of the church.

2554. And now some time has elapsed.

  2555. Some time has elapsed.

2556. And this church of Corinth is still set

  2557. on discipline,

  2558. in severity,

  2559. in harshness,

2560. when it's clear that this man

2561. has been broken over his sin,

  2562. has asked for forgiveness,

2563. and wants to be now part of the church again.

2564. And now Paul has to address this church.

2565. And not only their initial actions

  2566. towards this man,

2567. which were right and good,

2568. but now their own condition of their heart

2569. that they need to understand

2570. the significance of bringing him into the fold

  2571. and recognizing the significance

2572. of their own sorrowing over sin.

  2573. Okay?

2574. So all of that is a context

  2575. for 2 Corinthians 7, 9 to 11.

  2576. It says,

  2577. As it is,

  2578. I rejoice,

2579. not just because you were grieved,

  2580. meaning,

2581. you were grieved over this man's sin.

  2582. That was right.

  2583. That was good.

2584. And when I came after you,

2585. I came with some really strong words,

2586. and you understood and recognized

2587. the significance of what was happening,

2588. and you acted in an appropriate way

  2589. towards disciplining this guy.

2590. And your own hearts were grieved as well,

  2591. because you recognized

2592. that you were also culpable in some way.

2593. I'm not holding him accountable.

  2594. Okay?

  2595. He moves on.

2596. But because you were grieved into repenting,

2597. for you felt a godly grief

2598. so that you suffered no loss through us.

2599. For godly grief produces repentance

2600. that leads to salvation without regret,

2601. whereas worldly grief produces death.

  2602. For see what earnestness

2603. this godly grief has produced in you,

2604. but also what eagerness to clear yourselves

  2605. what indignation,

  2606. what fear,

  2607. what longing,

  2608. what zeal,

  2609. what punishment.

  2610. At every point,

2611. you have proved yourselves innocent

  2612. in this matter.

  2613. Okay?

2614. Let me just begin briefly

2615. with a discussion of the difference

  2616. between worldly sorrow

  2617. and godly sorrow.

  2618. Okay?

  2619. What is worldly sorrow?

2620. Did I put this in your...

  2621. Okay, good.

  2622. Worldly sorrow is regret.

  2623. It's self-centered grief.

  2624. You feel bad,

  2625. but you feel bad

  2626. because you got caught.

  2627. Okay?

  2628. You feel bad

  2629. because you're worried

  2630. about consequences.

  2631. You feel bad

  2632. because there's a level of shame

  2633. that has happened.

  2634. Okay?

  2635. It's not driven

  2636. by

  2637. by

  2638. by

  2639. a feeling

  2640. of guilt,

  2641. personal guilt

  2642. and understanding

  2643. of your sin

  2644. so much as

  2645. I...

2646. Because you would have kept

  2647. doing it

  2648. without any problem

  2649. until you got caught

  2650. because you didn't care

  2651. about the sin itself.

  2652. You just cared about

  2653. the consequences.

  2654. You understand?

  2655. Okay?

  2656. So,

  2657. it focuses on

  2658. I got caught.

2659. This is ruining my life.

  2660. Look what's happened

  2661. to me now.

  2662. People think less

  2663. of me now.

  2664. Okay?

  2665. That's

  2666. that's

  2667. worldly sorrow.

  2668. Can you

  2669. resonate with that?

  2670. Have you seen that?

  2671. Have you experienced that?

  2672. You understand

2673. what we're talking about here?

  2674. Okay.

  2675. So then,

  2676. how does that compare

  2677. with godly sorrow?

  2678. Well,

  2679. godly sorrow

  2680. is God-centered grief.

  2681. It grieves

  2682. the sin itself

  2683. because

  2684. it has offended

  2685. a holy God.

  2686. You come to terms

  2687. with understanding,

  2688. oh lord,

  2689. now I begin

  2690. to understand

  2691. the significance

  2692. of how this

  2693. has brought

  2694. reproach to your name.

  2695. God,

  2696. I don't care

  2697. what happens

  2698. to me.

  2699. I don't care

  2700. what the consequences

  2701. are.

  2702. But what I care

  2703. about is how

  2704. this has dishonored

  2705. you and I want

  2706. whatever it takes

  2707. in my life

  2708. for my life

  2709. to honor you.

  2710. And so,

  2711. you can bring

  2712. whatever punishment,

  2713. you can bring

  2714. whatever consequences,

  2715. whatever it takes,

  2716. Lord,

  2717. I want my life

  2718. to please you.

  2719. That's the difference.

  2720. Okay?

  2721. So,

2722. examples of godly sorrow here.

  2723. I hate the sin

2724. because God hates the sin.

  2725. It's what we see

  2726. in King David

  2727. when Nathan

  2728. confronts him

  2729. about Bathsheba.

  2730. Right?

2731. And all of a sudden

  2732. when there's this point

  2733. of revelation

  2734. in his heart,

  2735. he's like,

  2736. oh my goodness,

  2737. what have I done?

  2738. Oh Lord,

  2739. please forgive me.

  2740. Right?

  2741. This expression

  2742. of his heart.

2743. I want to be clean again.

  2744. I want my love

  2745. to be reordered

  2746. around God.

  2747. Not my emotions,

  2748. not my passions

  2749. that are pushing me

  2750. towards other things,

2751. but I want my passions

  2752. to lead me

  2753. to him.

  2754. Right?

  2755. So,

  2756. this passage,

  2757. 2 Corinthians 7,

    2 Corinthians 7:9–11

  2758. verses 9-11,

  2759. and especially

  2760. in verse 11,

  2761. now give us

  2762. seven characteristics

  2763. of what godly sorrow

  2764. looks like.

  2765. What does true repentance

  2766. look like?

  2767. How can I know

  2768. in my heart

2769. and how can I know

2770. with the people around me

  2771. whether or not

  2772. what they're doing

  2773. in asking for forgiveness

  2774. is self-serving

  2775. or God-serving?

  2776. Okay?

  2777. And here's some

  2778. characteristics,

  2779. some qualities

  2780. the Apostle Paul

  2781. points to.

2782. There are seven of them,

  2783. kind of,

2784. one right after the other.

  2785. Okay?

2786. And we're just going to

  2787. touch on them briefly.

  2788. Okay?

2789. You see that in verse 11.

  2790. What earnestness

  2791. this godly grief

  2792. has produced in you,

  2793. what eagerness,

  2794. what indignation,

  2795. what fear,

  2796. what longing,

  2797. what zeal,

  2798. what punishment,

  2799. at every point

  2800. you proved yourselves

  2801. to be innocent

  2802. as a matter.

2803. There are seven of them.

2804. I just want to touch on briefly.

  2805. Okay?

  2806. First is

  2807. the pursuit of purity.

  2808. The pursuit of purity

  2809. that's kind of captured

  2810. in this word earnestness.

  2811. Earnestness.

  2812. That once you're caught,

2813. or maybe I should say,

2814. once you come to terms

  2815. with your sin

  2816. and how that sin

  2817. has disrupted fellowship

  2818. with God

  2819. and has brought shame

  2820. or dishonor

  2821. to God

  2822. through your sin,

  2823. now there's this

  2824. intensity,

  2825. this earnestness.

  2826. He also describes

  2827. as eagerness,

  2828. this strong desire,

  2829. Lord,

2830. I want to be pure.

2831. I want to be clean.

  2832. I want not

  2833. to dishonor you

  2834. in this way again.

  2835. this intensity,

  2836. this earnestness,

  2837. this eagerness,

  2838. this zeal

  2839. and desire

  2840. in your heart.

  2841. Oh, God,

  2842. help me

  2843. that this is not

2844. a pattern in my life,

  2845. that this

  2846. is something

  2847. that I never have

  2848. to repent

  2849. about again.

  2850. That's your heart.

  2851. While you know

  2852. that it's likely

  2853. that there's going

  2854. to be sin again,

2855. maybe even in that area

  2856. again and again

  2857. and again,

  2858. that your heart says,

  2859. no,

2860. I want to be free

  2861. of this.

  2862. I want to be

  2863. unburdened by this.

2864. I want to please you.

  2865. Oh, God,

  2866. the intense earnestness

  2867. of my heart

  2868. is for purity,

  2869. this pursuit

  2870. of purity.

  2871. Next is

  2872. the presence

  2873. of repentance.

  2874. The presence

  2875. of repentance.

  2876. And he speaks

  2877. about

  2878. this anger,

  2879. okay,

  2880. this indignation.

  2881. And indignation

  2882. is another word

  2883. for anger.

  2884. And so,

  2885. this is just describing

  2886. how a person

  2887. feels

  2888. once they come

  2889. to terms

  2890. with their sin.

  2891. Like,

  2892. you can even remember

  2893. in the example

  2894. of David,

  2895. right?

  2896. Remember,

  2897. David confronts,

  2898. or Nathan confronts

  2899. David

  2900. about his sin.

  2901. Remember,

  2902. what illustration

  2903. or what story

  2904. does Nathan tell

  2905. David?

  2906. Remember?

  2907. Okay,

  2908. a man with a sheep.

  2909. Okay.

  2910. Okay.

  2911. Okay,

  2912. good.

  2913. He takes that sheep,

  2914. he claims it

  2915. for his own,

  2916. and even though

  2917. he's got all

  2918. of these sheep,

  2919. he takes the one

  2920. from the poor

  2921. little farmer

  2922. down the road

  2923. who doesn't have

  2924. any sheep.

  2925. He just has

  2926. this,

  2927. that one,

  2928. right?

  2929. And how does

  2930. David feel

  2931. when he hears

  2932. that example?

  2933. Anger,

  2934. right?

  2935. And he's like,

  2936. I'm going to

  2937. rephrase this

  2938. because I don't

  2939. remember the exact

  2940. phraseology,

  2941. but may it be

  2942. an even more,

  2943. I'm going to

  2944. kill that guy,

  2945. right?

  2946. Because this is

  2947. unacceptable in Israel.

  2948. And then Nathan

  2949. says,

  2950. what?

  2951. You are the man.

  2952. You're the man.

  2953. And not only

  2954. was there a sense

  2955. of reality

  2956. that sunk in,

  2957. but that kind

  2958. of anger

  2959. that David felt

  2960. about that sin

  2961. is how we should

  2962. feel about that sin

  2963. in our own lives.

  2964. God,

  2965. I hate this sin.

  2966. I hate what it's

  2967. doing to me.

  2968. I hate what it's

  2969. doing to the people

  2970. around me.

  2971. I hate kind of

  2972. the consequences

  2973. and the implications

  2974. of how this has

  2975. disrupted ministry

  2976. and family

  2977. and community

  2978. and perhaps have

  2979. robbed you

  2980. of opportunities

  2981. to serve.

  2982. It's maybe

  2983. tarnished your

  2984. reputation

  2985. and taken away

  2986. some of those

  2987. opportunities that

  2988. you have

  2989. to speak into

  2990. the lives of

  2991. others.

  2992. God,

  2993. I hate that my

  2994. sin has done

  2995. this.

  2996. Oh God,

  2997. please forgive me.

  2998. Here's the beauty

  2999. though.

  3000. The beauty is

  3001. that God can

  3002. redeem the years

  3003. the locusts have

  3004. eaten,

  3005. right?

  3006. We have a

  3007. redeeming,

  3008. restoring kind

  3009. of God.

  3010. But it should

  3011. lead us to anger.

  3012. God,

  3013. I hate my sin.

  3014. I'm broken

  3015. over it.

  3016. I don't want this

3017. to be true of me.

  3018. I hate this.

  3019. Next is

  3020. the presence

  3021. of holy fear.

  3022. He says,

  3023. what fear?

  3024. What fear?

  3025. And I think

  3026. this is reverence

  3027. for God

  3028. but I think

  3029. it's more than

  3030. just reverence

  3031. for God.

  3032. I think it's

  3033. like that feeling

  3034. that you have

  3035. when you've been

  3036. caught.

  3037. Like,

  3038. you know,

  3039. for the adults

  3040. in the room,

  3041. you're driving

  3042. down the road,

  3043. you're going a little

  3044. faster than you should

  3045. and you see

  3046. those flashing

  3047. lights,

  3048. okay?

  3049. You're like,

  3050. oh,

  3051. that sinking

  3052. feeling you get,

  3053. right?

  3054. Kind of that,

  3055. oh no,

  3056. I feel terrible.

  3057. That kind of fear

  3058. down in the,

  3059. you know,

  3060. down here

  3061. in the parts

  3062. of your,

  3063. right?

  3064. And then,

  3065. you know,

  3066. for those of you

  3067. who are teenagers

  3068. or kids

  3069. and you're doing

  3070. something you know

  3071. you're not supposed

  3072. to do,

  3073. you get caught,

  3074. right?

  3075. And,

  3076. oh,

  3077. that fear

  3078. down here

  3079. in this part,

  3080. right?

  3081. You feel it,

  3082. you know it,

  3083. like,

  3084. oh,

  3085. that's the kind

  3086. of fear

  3087. we're talking

  3088. about.

  3089. So that,

  3090. I don't ever

  3091. want to do this

  3092. again because I

  3093. hate,

  3094. I hate that feeling

  3095. of fear.

  3096. I want to live

  3097. in the present

  3098. reality

  3099. of the fear

  3100. of God.

  3101. That,

  3102. that,

  3103. that,

  3104. that holy

  3105. fear of God

  3106. helps to preserve

  3107. me and carry

  3108. me and,

  3109. and,

  3110. and point my

  3111. life in the

  3112. right direction.

  3113. This is number

  3114. four,

  3115. a passion

  3116. to restore

  3117. broken relationships.

  3118. This longing

  3119. that he refers

  3120. to here

  3121. in verse 11.

  3122. This longing

  3123. to,

  3124. to make

  3125. something right,

  3126. okay?

  3127. This,

  3128. this longing

  3129. to,

  3130. to,

  3131. to,

  3132. to restore

  3133. what was,

  3134. what was broken.

  3135. That,

  3136. that I'm not okay

  3137. with just leaving

  3138. things alone.

  3139. I'm not okay

  3140. with just

  3141. allowing the mess

  3142. to remain.

  3143. But,

  3144. but as much

  3145. as I'm able

  3146. to,

  3147. I want to restore

  3148. back what's been

  3149. taken.

  3150. I want to fix

  3151. what's been broken.

  3152. I want to restore

  3153. that relationship.

  3154. I want to do

  3155. what it takes

  3156. to,

  3157. to make sure

  3158. they recognize

  3159. that,

  3160. that I'm not okay

  3161. with what's,

  3162. with what's happened.

  3163. And as much

  3164. as I'm able to,

  3165. to restore that

  3166. broken relationship.

  3167. This heart

  3168. for zeal.

  3169. You know,

  3170. we've talked about

  3171. zeal a lot

  3172. already.

  3173. And,

  3174. and we see

  3175. this zeal

  3176. kind of working

  3177. its way through

  3178. a lot of the

  3179. elements of,

  3180. of,

  3181. of this,

  3182. of this passage.

  3183. But,

  3184. but here,

  3185. zeal and just

  3186. helping to

  3187. refer to

  3188. passionate

  3189. desire for

  3190. justice.

  3191. That's really

  3192. what this,

  3193. this Greek word

  3194. means.

  3195. Not just

  3196. punishment

  3197. here,

  3198. but,

  3199. but,

  3200. or self

  3201. punishment

  3202. that he's

  3203. referring to.

  3204. But,

  3205. but so,

  3206. so much more,

  3207. actually I'm

  3208. moving,

  3209. sorry,

  3210. that's,

  3211. I said zeal,

  3212. I'm on,

  3213. I'm on a six,

  3214. pursuit of justice

  3215. and punishment.

  3216. The punishment

  3217. doesn't mean

  3218. self punishment,

  3219. but a,

  3220. a willingness

  3221. to make things

  3222. right.

  3223. To take whatever

  3224. steps that are

  3225. necessary to fix

  3226. the damage.

  3227. You accept the

  3228. consequences.

  3229. You're willing

  3230. to come clean.

  3231. And,

  3232. you know,

  3233. I think

  3234. a lot of

  3235. times

  3236. when we feel

  3237. like we've

  3238. gotten away

  3239. with something

  3240. and maybe

  3241. we have

  3242. gotten away

  3243. with something,

  3244. the,

  3245. one of the,

  3246. one of the

  3247. riskiest things

  3248. that we can

  3249. consider

  3250. when we're,

  3251. when we

  3252. come to terms

  3253. with our sin

  3254. is now

  3255. coming clean.

  3256. Because we

  3257. feel like

  3258. even though

  3259. God has

  3260. convicted us

  3261. about that

  3262. sin,

  3263. if we can

  3264. keep it

  3265. private,

  3266. then we can

  3267. mitigate the

  3268. consequences.

  3269. Does that make

  3270. sense?

  3271. Right?

  3272. God may have

  3273. convicted me

  3274. about this

  3275. that as I've

  3276. been praying,

  3277. oh Lord,

  3278. please reveal

  3279. to me the

  3280. areas that

  3281. I've sinned

  3282. against you.

  3283. And he does.

  3284. And you're like,

  3285. oh boy,

  3286. ho, ho, ho.

  3287. I haven't had

  3288. to pay for that

  3289. yet.

  3290. I haven't

  3291. had to,

  3292. I haven't

  3293. had to

  3294. resolve

  3295. the potential

  3296. collateral

  3297. damage of

  3298. that yet.

  3299. Because they

  3300. don't know

  3301. about that

  3302. yet.

  3303. And so,

  3304. we are

  3305. tempted then

  3306. again to

  3307. go underground

  3308. and to

  3309. complicate

  3310. the,

  3311. the fertile

  3312. soil that

  3313. God is trying

  3314. to produce

  3315. sin us

  3316. because we're

  3317. afraid of

  3318. then what

  3319. God might

  3320. allow to

  3321. happen once

  3322. that sin

  3323. comes out

  3324. into the

  3325. light.

  3326. Does that

  3327. make sense?

  3328. That's not

  3329. what a

  3330. repentant

  3331. heart does.

  3332. A repentant

  3333. heart says,

  3334. okay God,

  3335. I trust

  3336. you that

  3337. since you

  3338. have led

  3339. me to

  3340. understand

  3341. what my

  3342. sin is,

  3343. that you're

  3344. also going

  3345. to allow

  3346. me to

  3347. recognize

  3348. that the

  3349. consequences

  3350. that you

  3351. bring into

  3352. my world

  3353. have some

  3354. redeeming

  3355. quality to

  3356. them.

  3357. And I

  3358. trust you

  3359. to do

  3360. what's

  3361. right,

  3362. even when

  3363. I'm terrified

  3364. of what's

  3365. coming.

  3366. Make sense?

  3367. That's a

  3368. big one.

  3369. Yes.

  3370. That's good.

  3371. That's good.

  3372. That's good.

  3373. Amen.

  3374. Thank you,

  3375. John.

  3376. Moms and

  3377. dads,

  3378. this is kind

  3379. of what

  3380. John said,

  3381. and I

  3382. agree wholeheartedly.

  3383. You set the

  3384. course for

  3385. this in your

  3386. kids'

  3387. lives.

  3388. Because there's

  3389. a lot of

  3390. times when

  3391. Johnny comes

  3392. home and

  3393. says,

  3394. oh,

  3395. daddy,

  3396. I was

  3397. riding my

  3398. bike.

  3399. And this

  3400. is a personal

  3401. story.

  3402. I was

  3403. riding my

  3404. bike and

  3405. I ran

  3406. into so-and-so.

  3407. Like,

  3408. you're riding

  3409. down the

  3410. street on

  3411. your bicycle

  3412. and you

  3413. hit a car?

  3414. Now,

  3415. he didn't

  3416. respond that

  3417. way,

  3418. but he's

  3419. like,

  3420. how did

  3421. this happen?

  3422. Well,

  3423. you go

  3424. inspect and

  3425. the little

  3426. scratch is

  3427. hardly visible.

  3428. You're like,

  3429. I'll just

  3430. buff this out,

  3431. no problem.

  3432. But parents,

  3433. you say,

  3434. you know what?

  3435. We've got

  3436. business to

  3437. do.

  3438. You need to

  3439. tell Mrs.

  3440. Straley what

  3441. happened.

  3442. We need to

  3443. own up to

  3444. this.

  3445. Parents,

  3446. you set the

  3447. course for

  3448. true repentance

  3449. in your children's

  3450. heart when you

  3451. help them know

  3452. and embrace the

  3453. consequences.

  3454. Thank you,

  3455. John.

  3456. That is,

  3457. I'm glad we

  3458. didn't miss

  3459. that.

  3460. Wow.

  3461. Okay,

  3462. finally,

  3463. a clear

  3464. conscience and

  3465. renewed joy.

  3466. And here's

  3467. what,

  3468. here's what

  3469. Paul says,

  3470. kind of moving

  3471. back to

  3472. verse 10.

  3473. For godly

  3474. grief produces

  3475. a repentance

  3476. without regret.

  3477. Oh,

  3478. man,

  3479. there is nothing

  3480. better than a

  3481. clear conscience.

  3482. And that's,

  3483. that's the

  3484. final benefit

  3485. that we get

  3486. to enjoy

  3487. when we're

  3488. walking this

  3489. path.

  3490. This is not

  3491. only a

  3492. realigned,

  3493. recalibrated

  3494. heart in

  3495. passions that

  3496. are kind of

  3497. reset to,

  3498. to want

  3499. God and

  3500. to walk

  3501. after God,

  3502. but we

  3503. come to a

  3504. place like,

  3505. I am

  3506. finally free.

  3507. I'm free

  3508. of this.

  3509. It doesn't

  3510. have a hold

  3511. on me anymore.

  3512. And that's,

  3513. that's the

  3514. benefit.

  3515. So,

  3516. in just a

  3517. couple minutes,

  3518. I want to

  3519. give you a

  3520. shot here,

  3521. okay?

  3522. Here's a final

  3523. little piece

  3524. for you,

  3525. okay?

  3526. This closing

  3527. personal commitment,

  3528. right?

  3529. So,

  3530. look at this,

  3531. fill in the

  3532. blanks,

  3533. okay,

  3534. for me.

  3535. Lord,

  3536. when I feel

  3537. blank,

  3538. what is that

  3539. emotion that

  3540. comes to your

  3541. mind?

  3542. When I feel

  3543. this way,

  3544. I usually

  3545. move towards

  3546. this.

  3547. When I feel

  3548. this,

  3549. when I feel

  3550. anxious,

  3551. when I feel

  3552. fearful,

  3553. when I feel

  3554. happy,

  3555. when I feel

  3556. frustrated,

  3557. then it moves

  3558. me towards

  3559. this.

  3560. But Lord,

  3561. this week,

  3562. I want to

  3563. commit to

  3564. do this

  3565. instead,

  3566. so I can

  3567. live in

  3568. purity and

  3569. grow in

  3570. worship of

  3571. you.

  3572. Just take a

  3573. couple seconds,

  3574. fill in those

  3575. blanks,

  3576. and then I'll

  3577. pray for us.

  3578. Father,

  3579. we thank you

  3580. that you have

  3581. given us

  3582. hearts that

  3583. can move in

  3584. the right

  3585. direction.

  3586. And so,

  3587. Father,

  3588. we pray for

  3589. your help.

  3590. We pray that

  3591. your Holy Spirit

  3592. will guide our

  3593. lives,

  3594. that will make

  3595. us new.

  3596. And God,

  3597. in every part

  3598. of life,

  3599. whether it's

  3600. in academics,

  3601. or it's in

  3602. work,

  3603. whether it's

  3604. in private,

  3605. or in public,

  3606. Lord,

  3607. wherever we are

  3608. and whatever we

  3609. feel,

  3610. Lord,

  3611. I pray that we

  3612. would bring

  3613. those feelings

  3614. to you,

  3615. and that it

  3616. would lead us

  3617. to your greater

  3618. worship.

  3619. We pray these

  3620. things in Jesus'

  3621. name.

  3622. Amen.

  3623. All right.

  3624. Thanks for coming,

  3625. and we hope to

  3626. pick this up again

  3627. next week.
