  1. What we're just saying about a man of sorrows and all that Jesus did as that man of sorrows to produce a people for himself.

  2. !

  3. And what purpose or mission does that drive them to accomplish?

  4. Well, that's where we're kind of working our way through the book of Acts, just getting started.

  5. And we're going to get an up-close look at what the man of sorrows produces.

  6. What does his death and resurrection accomplish for a people?

  7. And what mission does he put them on?

  8. What changes in their life?

  9. What fundamentally is different about them?

  10. And one of the ways we want to try to do that through the next several weeks, we started last week,

  11. and we're going to continue this week and the next couple of weeks,

  12. is not just put the word in front of you, but sometimes I benefit from practical life examples.

  13. And we'd like to put some practical life examples in front of you.

  14. Last week, we saw the story of the Manuelers, a family in our church.

  15. Andy is a deacon in our church.

  16. Angela, of course, is his wife and they're children.

  17. And they shared with us a little bit of the beginning of that journey.

  18. And we're going to see this continuing journey over the next several weeks.

  19. And today, we're going to see how a praying family becomes a family who builds relationships.

  20. So let's see that this morning, and we'll pick it up from there.

  21. As a family, our mission is to know him and make him known.

  22. After much deliberation and prayer, we decided to homeschool our children through fourth grade

  23. and then send them to public school.

  24. One reason was to give us opportunities to build relationships and point people to Christ.

  25. Whatever schooling method is chosen, the key piece is staying highly involved.

  26. When we stay involved in our kids' schooling, even at a public school, lots of opportunities arise to build relationships.

  27. As I attend my children's sports practices and games, I've been able to build relationships with parents and even several of the players.

  28. We've often been able to build relationships with some of the teachers,

  29. even through asking questions about assignments that we're not comfortable with and asking for alternate assignments.

  30. We've gotten good feedback that they appreciate that, and we have been able to share why these things are important to us.

  31. So I can't be a room mom. I need to find other ways to connect.

  32. It was a difficult season for connecting with teachers and parents because God decided it was also time to give us two more gifts of Nathan and Joanna.

  33. But I have been able to meet teachers at open house, band concerts, and other school events.

  34. I have met some other parents at sports games, concerts, and events that parents are invited to,

  35. such as parents' night and classroom debate competitions.

  36. We had quickly developed a good relationship with one of Caleb's teachers,

  37. and she allowed him to bring his new baby brother to class shortly after Nathan was born.

  38. That was a special connection moment, and now that teacher has her own newborn son.

  39. Two years ago, the Lord allowed me the opportunity to fill a need and accompany high school band students who perform instrumental solos.

  40. This has been a special connection point for me as I now have accompanied some of the same students two years in a row,

  41. and will get a third chance this school year.

  42. When I first went to a public school in fifth grade, I slowly started to get to know the kids in my class

  43. and was able to keep relationships with them all the way through high school.

  44. This gave me relationships and friendships that I was able to build into over the years.

  45. I also attempted to host a Bible study with a few friends, invited many of them to youth events and Sunday services,

  46. and was once even called different by a friend and took it as a compliment,

  47. since I am called to be in the world but not of it.

  48. I also was in two bands and played on a soccer team, so that gave me opportunities to connect with a wider demographic.

  49. While I don't have connection with many of my school friends anymore,

  50. I can pray that God is continuing to grow and work with the seeds that I was able to plant throughout those years.

  51. I've played four different sports, been in two bands, two choirs, and a couple more extracurricular activities throughout my public school career.

  52. And through those, I've been able to meet and get to know a lot of kids that I've been able to make connections with,

  53. and a few deep friendships.

  54. And in everything that I'm doing, I'm striving to be different for Jesus.

  55. And many have recognized the unique friendliness to kindness and joy that points to Jesus and has allowed for conversations to start.

  56. Even though we're not in public school yet to make new friends and point them to Jesus,

  57. we've been able to play sports and make friends to that.

  58. So why do we put these in front of you?

  59. Well, we put these videos in front of you not to say, well, this is how you should do it.

  60. This is the way it goes.

  61. This is the formula that works.

  62. But to give you some examples,

  63. these are just a few examples of how God has done that in the lives of the Manwellers,

  64. how God has used their receptive hearts to work in the flow of the community that he has put them into,

  65. and to try to maximize those relationships in order to have gospel opportunities.

  66. This is what God wants all of us to be involved in.

  67. And the other one of the goals of putting this in front of you is to show how easy it can be.

  68. You don't have to have the gift of evangelism.

  69. You don't have to be gifted in terms of apologetics.

  70. You just have to be a person who is willing to be available,

  71. praying for opportunities, building relationships,

  72. and seeking for God to open up doors so that you can walk through them and have a gospel witness.

  73. So I trust that as we work through these,

  74. that you see this as an example out of many that God can use to stimulate your hearts

  75. and to lead you to very good things.

  76. I love this book of Acts for a lot of reasons.

  77. Maybe one of the biggest reasons why I appreciate the book of Acts

  78. is because it is a story about how Jesus takes a group of nobodies,

  79. a group of misfits,

  80. and he's able to use them in a way that changes the world.

  81. As a matter of fact, the Apostle Paul, in his ministry,

  82. the indictment against him is,

  83. hey, these are the guys that are turning the world upside down.

  84. Well, how did God do that?

  85. And that's why we're moving through this book of Acts to see

  86. how does God use a dysfunctional people?

  87. How does God use a group of misfits to turn the world upside down?

  88. Do you realize that God will build his church?

  89. As a matter of fact, we find that in the Scripture

  90. where Jesus says,

  91. I will build my church,

  92. and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

  93. God is in the church building business.

  94. And the incredible part about all of this

  95. is that God wants to use you,

  96. and he wants to use me

  97. to accomplish this objective.

  98. And we're going to look

  99. and begin to look

  100. in the Word of God today

  101. to see how God will do that.

  102. How will God do that for you?

  103. How will God do that for me?

  104. How will God use us

  105. to turn the world upside down?

  106. Because God is building his church.

  107. It is an unstoppable church.

  108. It is an unrivaled,

  109. unrivaled work

  110. that God is doing

  111. through his Spirit

  112. and through his people.

  113. He wants to use you.

  114. He wants to use me.

  115. So we're going to see

  116. how God will turn this world upside down

  117. using a group of misfits

  118. as we turn in our Bibles to Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  119. Begin this journey with me.

  120. Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  121. beginning in verse 1.

  122. I'm going to read the first three verses,

  123. and we're going to begin to see

  124. this mission strategy

  125. of how Christ, the risen Lord,

  126. is preparing a people for himself,

  127. preparing a church for himself.

  128. And here we are in this series,

  129. Becoming the Church.

  130. Well, what does the church look like,

  131. and how does the church become?

  132. Well, the church will become,

  133. and we'll see this morning,

  134. the church becomes,

  135. as the church will follow,

  136. the directives of the church builder,

  137. Jesus Christ himself.

  138. If you're using the Pew Bible,

  139. you can find it on page 909,

  140. and follow along with me

  141. as I read Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1:1–3

  142. verses 1 to 3.

  143. It says,

  144. In the first book, O Theophilus,

  145. I have dealt with all that Jesus

  146. began to do and to teach

  147. until the day when he was taken up

  148. after he had given commands

  149. through the Holy Spirit

  150. to the apostles whom he had chosen.

  151. He presented himself alive to them

  152. after his suffering by many proofs,

  153. appearing to them during 40 days,

  154. and speaking about the kingdom of God.

  155. We're going to see

  156. four different characteristics,

  157. four different qualities

  158. of these individuals

  159. who God will use

  160. to build this church.

  161. And the first is this,

  162. recognizing that you have

  163. a trustworthy witness.

  164. You have a trustworthy witness.

  165. I love how Luke puts this here

  166. in verse 3,

  167. speaking about this life

  168. and ministry of Christ.

  169. And notice this word here,

  170. this phrase in verse 3,

  171. and Jesus presented him alive,

  172. excuse me,

  173. he presented himself to them

  174. after his sufferings

  175. by many proofs.

  176. By many proofs.

  177. As we begin this series,

  178. I'm blown away by the mercy of God

  179. to set before us proofs,

  180. evidences,

  181. things that you can substantiate,

  182. ways in which you can bolster

  183. your confidence

  184. and know that what you believe

  185. about Jesus

  186. and about his life

  187. and about his teaching

  188. has backing.

  189. You can substantiate it.

  190. It's been given to us

  191. in a way that has been validated

  192. and demonstrates its integrity.

  193. Right here at the start,

  194. there are these three verses.

  195. We get a sense of the wonder

  196. of God's amazing grace.

  197. You have a gracious God.

  198. A gracious God.

  199. He's given you

  200. a trustworthy witness.

  201. And maybe it's not

  202. abundantly obvious

  203. because of how much

  204. we've taken this witness

  205. for granted.

  206. But God has given his witness

  207. to us through his word.

  208. Notice this in verse 1.

  209. It says,

  210. In the first book,

  211. O Theophilus,

  212. I have dealt with all the things

  213. that Jesus began to do

  214. and to,

  215. what church?

  216. To teach.

  217. You see,

  218. we have a God

  219. who has revealed himself.

  220. He's revealed himself

  221. through his son

  222. whom he sent

  223. as the very word of God.

  224. The word of God

  225. became flesh.

  226. He dwelt among us.

  227. He did not have to.

  228. He did not have to come.

  229. He did not have to

  230. dwell with us.

  231. Broken humanity.

  232. Who does that?

  233. What deity do you know

  234. that wants to mix it up

  235. with corruption?

  236. And God sent his son Jesus

  237. to come in human flesh,

  238. to robe himself in limitation,

  239. in humanity,

  240. and to speak,

  241. and to teach,

  242. and to reveal.

  243. The word of God

  244. came to us.

  245. We just need to pause

  246. for a moment

  247. and marvel

  248. at the grace of God

  249. in this trustworthy witness.

  250. God did not just

  251. present himself in words.

  252. He could have just

  253. sent a message,

  254. which he did

  255. through the prophets,

  256. but he sent himself.

  257. God came

  258. in the flesh

  259. to speak

  260. and to do

  261. and to love

  262. and to show compassion

  263. and to demonstrate example

  264. and to put up

  265. with very

  266. wayward

  267. and foolish

  268. disciples.

  269. How many times

  270. does Jesus

  271. confront the disciples

  272. by confronting

  273. their,

  274. oh foolish ones

  275. and slow

  276. in heart

  277. to believe.

  278. That's not just

  279. the disciples,

  280. by the way.

  281. That's you and me.

  282. The fact is

  283. that Jesus,

  284. he didn't just

  285. come into time

  286. and space

  287. and speak words

  288. to people

  289. in a first century,

  290. but by God's grace,

  291. he communicated

  292. those words

  293. and those words

  294. are captured

  295. for us.

  296. Those words

  297. of Jesus

  298. captured

  299. for you

  300. and for me.

  301. Gracious words.

  302. Life-giving words.

  303. Words that

  304. you can read.

  305. You don't have to

  306. hear about.

  307. Not just this

  308. verbal testimony.

  309. Oh, there was

  310. some God

  311. in the first century

  312. who happened

  313. to say some things.

  314. No, we have

  315. those words

  316. captured.

  317. They're for you.

  318. You can read them.

  319. You can enjoy them.

  320. You can test them

  321. for yourself.

  322. The gracious

  323. word of God,

  324. the testimony

  325. that he's given,

  326. the witness

  327. that's confirmed.

  328. You can have it.

  329. It's in your possession.

  330. We have access

  331. to it.

  332. And so,

  333. we enjoy

  334. this trustworthy,

  335. accessible word.

  336. And notice

  337. what Luke says here

  338. in verse 1.

  339. It says,

  340. In the first book,

  341. O Theophilus,

  342. I have dealt

  343. with all the things

  344. that Jesus began

  345. to do and to teach.

  346. And so,

  347. what we're reading

  348. in the book of Acts

  349. is just volume 2

  350. of a two-volume set.

  351. And so,

  352. if we want to

  353. just briefly

  354. go back

  355. to volume 1,

  356. the gospel of Luke,

  357. we can see something

  358. about the credibility

  359. of this witness.

  360. I would just

  361. invite you

  362. to just turn back

  363. for a moment

  364. to Luke chapter 1.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  365. Luke 1,

  366. 1 to 4.

  367. And I just want to

  368. spend a couple

  369. of moments here

  370. to help you understand

  371. the significance

  372. of this trustworthy word.

  373. It says,

  374. Inasmuch as many

  375. have undertaken

  376. to compile a narrative

  377. of the things

  378. that have been accomplished

  379. among us,

  380. just as those

  381. who from the beginning

  382. were eyewitnesses

  383. and ministers

  384. of the word

  385. have delivered them

  386. to us,

  387. it seemed good

  388. to me also,

  389. having followed

  390. all things closely

  391. for some time past,

  392. to write

  393. an orderly

  394. account for you.

  395. most excellent

  396. Theophilus,

  397. that you may have

  398. certainty

  399. concerning the things

  400. that you have been taught.

  401. I want to draw attention

  402. to the trustworthiness

  403. of this word.

  404. Notice how he puts

  405. that in verse 4.

  406. I want you to understand

  407. that the things

  408. that you may have

  409. certainty

  410. concerning the things

  411. you've been taught.

  412. The purpose

  413. for this writing

  414. is certainty.

  415. It's a trustworthy word.

  416. That God cares about

  417. you being able

  418. to evaluate

  419. and examine

  420. this word for yourself

  421. to evaluate

  422. its trustworthiness,

  423. to see its credibility.

  424. What a gracious God

  425. you have.

  426. Gracious God.

  427. And he's come

  428. and he's allowed

  429. this orderly account

  430. to be written.

  431. And so he compiles

  432. this narrative,

  433. this life story

  434. of Jesus.

  435. And this account

  436. that we've been given

  437. helps us to understand

  438. it's not just

  439. some fictitious story

  440. that's been written down,

  441. but the fact that he uses

  442. this word account

  443. helps us to understand

  444. that whatever Luke

  445. is writing

  446. is captured in history.

  447. It's verifiable.

  448. It's anchored.

  449. It's subject to scrutiny.

  450. Notice all the times,

  451. just briefly here,

  452. where Luke is not afraid

  453. for you to fact check

  454. his work.

  455. Luke chapter 1,

    Luke 1:5

  456. verse 5.

  457. In the days of Herod,

  458. king of Judah.

  459. Luke 1, 26.

  460. In the sixth month,

  461. the angel Gabriel

  462. was sent from God

  463. to a city of Galilee

  464. named Nazareth.

  465. Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2:1

  466. verses 1 and 2.

  467. In those days,

  468. a decree went out

  469. from Caesar Augustus

  470. that all the world

  471. should be registered.

  472. This was the first registration

  473. when Quirinius

  474. was governor over Syria.

  475. And we could go on.

  476. Luke is not afraid

  477. of fact checking.

  478. Luke is not afraid

  479. for you to go to the source

  480. and to see whether or not

  481. what he's writing

  482. is credible

  483. and verifiable.

  484. Because Luke

  485. and our Savior

  486. cares about bolstering

  487. and supporting

  488. your faith.

  489. He wants to lead you to faith.

  490. He wants you to lead you

  491. to confidence.

  492. He wants you to know

  493. that you have

  494. a trustworthy witness.

  495. What a gracious God.

  496. So we have

  497. not just an accurate,

  498. well-ordered account,

  499. but we have

  500. these eyewitnesses.

  501. Eyewitnesses

  502. that we find

  503. throughout the testimony

  504. of Scripture.

  505. We don't have time

  506. this morning

  507. to talk about them all,

  508. but at least a couple

  509. of them

  510. are Matthew

  511. and Mark

  512. who Luke

  513. and the Apostle Paul

  514. and others

  515. spent time with.

  516. And Matthew

  517. was one of the

  518. twelve apostles.

  519. He was there

  520. through the whole duration

  521. of Jesus' life

  522. and ministry.

  523. Mark,

  524. who had been learning

  525. from the Apostle Peter,

  526. was capturing this story

  527. from Peter's perspective.

  528. and you have

  529. this witness,

  530. these eyewitnesses.

  531. Mary,

  532. who treasured

  533. and pondered

  534. all of these things

  535. in her heart.

  536. She's certainly

  537. one of these witnesses.

  538. We find her

  539. in Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  540. She's there

  541. with the 120 believers

  542. and her testimony

  543. is certainly part

  544. of this narrative

  545. that's being recorded

  546. for us.

  547. God cares about

  548. witnesses.

  549. He cares about

  550. credibility.

  551. Why did God

  552. do it this way?

  553. Well, God did it

  554. this way because

  555. He wanted you

  556. to have a trustworthy

  557. witness

  558. so that you could

  559. believe it.

  560. It wasn't just

  561. to know it.

  562. It wasn't just

  563. to affirm it.

  564. It was to believe it.

  565. It was to read it

  566. for yourself

  567. and treasure it

  568. for yourself

  569. so that you could

  570. fundamentally believe

  571. the words

  572. that God has given

  573. to you.

  574. God is after faith.

  575. He's after your heart.

  576. He's after your

  577. allegiance.

  578. He wants your

  579. devotion.

  580. He wants you

  581. not just to believe.

  582. He wants that

  583. belief to lead

  584. to action.

  585. He wants it to lead

  586. to confident,

  587. bold testimony.

  588. You have a trustworthy

  589. Savior,

  590. a trustworthy witness.

  591. You can believe it.

  592. Second,

  593. we have a risen Savior.

  594. We see that in

  595. verse 3.

  596. It says,

  597. He was presented

  598. or He presented

  599. Himself alive

  600. to them

  601. after His suffering

  602. by many proofs,

  603. appearing to them

  604. during 40 days.

  605. Now,

  606. the truth

  607. of the resurrection

  608. of Jesus Christ,

  609. I want you

  610. and I think you

  611. already understand,

  612. this is fundamental

  613. for your faith.

  614. You cannot be

  615. a believer,

  616. you cannot be

  617. a follower

  618. of Jesus Christ

  619. unless you not only

  620. know about the resurrection,

  621. but you believe it

  622. in your heart.

  623. Romans 10,

  624. 9 and 10

  625. says this,

  626. because if you

  627. confess with your mouth

  628. that Jesus is Lord

  629. and believe in your heart

  630. that God raised Him

  631. from the dead,

  632. you will be saved.

  633. For with the heart

  634. one believes

  635. and is justified

  636. and with the mouth

  637. one confesses

  638. and is saved.

  639. If you're going to

  640. have a relationship

  641. with Jesus,

  642. if you're going to be

  643. part of this group

  644. of believers

  645. who's going to

  646. change the world

  647. someday,

  648. this is fundamental

  649. to your life.

  650. This is fundamental

  651. to your association

  652. with Him.

  653. your faith

  654. is contingent

  655. upon believing

  656. the right things

  657. and believing

  658. especially

  659. in this risen Lord.

  660. He is alive.

  661. And so what does

  662. God graciously do

  663. for us?

  664. He not only

  665. raises Jesus

  666. from the dead,

  667. but He gives

  668. this undeniable

  669. confirmation

  670. of His resurrection.

  671. We have these

  672. proofs

  673. that God

  674. graciously gives

  675. to the disciples

  676. and then subsequently

  677. every single one

  678. of us

  679. to confirm

  680. the reality

  681. of that work.

  682. He does this

  683. in order to move

  684. a people

  685. or to make

  686. a people

  687. for Himself.

  688. He wants

  689. your heart.

  690. He wants

  691. your allegiance.

  692. He wants you

  693. to believe

  694. and worship Him.

  695. and that believing

  696. is not

  697. ambiguous.

  698. That believing

  699. is very specific.

  700. You have to believe

  701. the right things

  702. about Jesus.

  703. And so God

  704. gives this proof,

  705. this confirmation,

  706. this unmistakable

  707. testimony of Himself,

  708. this period of time

  709. between the resurrection

  710. and between His ascension.

  711. And we find here

  712. 40 days.

  713. 40 days

  714. of this

  715. interaction.

  716. It wasn't

  717. continuous

  718. time with Jesus

  719. but this

  720. interactive time

  721. where Jesus

  722. seems to be

  723. coming in

  724. and out

  725. of the vicinity

  726. where these

  727. disciples are.

  728. And initially

  729. we see

  730. these resurrection

  731. appearances

  732. there in Jerusalem

  733. that Jesus

  734. appears to Mary Magdalene

  735. in the Garden

  736. of Gethsemane.

  737. He appears

  738. to the women

  739. who were also

  740. there in that area.

  741. He appears

  742. to two disciples

  743. on the road

  744. to Emmaus

  745. in Luke chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  746. He appears

  747. to Simon Peter

  748. individually

  749. in Luke 24, 34.

  750. He appears

  751. to gathered

  752. disciples

  753. without Thomas

  754. being present.

  755. And then He appears

  756. to the 11

  757. with Thomas

  758. present.

  759. He appears

  760. then

  761. to 500.

  762. He appears

  763. to Paul

  764. who says

  765. this untimely

  766. follower of His,

  767. Jesus

  768. unmistakably

  769. appeared

  770. for the

  771. whole point

  772. of bolstering

  773. faith

  774. in resurrection.

  775. You see

  776. the disciples

  777. and the women

  778. that they will

  779. initially make

  780. their way

  781. out of Jerusalem

  782. and Christ

  783. will command

  784. them to go

  785. to Galilee.

  786. And you're like

  787. why Galilee

  788. of all places?

  789. What's in Galilee?

  790. Why wouldn't

  791. they have just

  792. stayed in Jerusalem?

  793. And while we

  794. don't really have

  795. the full answer

  796. to that

  797. there is this

  798. time

  799. that's

  800. transpiring

  801. and so

  802. God

  803. allows them

  804. to go back

  805. to Galilee

  806. which was

  807. kind of

  808. their home

  809. turf

  810. as it were.

  811. This was

  812. kind of

  813. where the

  814. mission

  815. was all

  816. born.

  817. And Jesus

  818. through

  819. this time

  820. this interactive

  821. time

  822. He's helping

  823. to establish

  824. a group

  825. of individuals

  826. a group

  827. of disciples

  828. who are going

  829. to be committed

  830. to Him

  831. in every way.

  832. It was in Galilee

  833. that Jesus

  834. would meet

  835. them.

  836. He meets

  837. them by

  838. the Sea

  839. of Galilee

  840. as they're

  841. fishing.

  842. You remember

  843. the story?

  844. They're out

  845. fishing and

  846. they've been

  847. fishing all

  848. night and

  849. they haven't

  850. caught a

  851. thing.

  852. And then all

  853. of a sudden

  854. someone shouts

  855. hey cast

  856. your nets

  857. on the other

  858. side.

  859. In this

  860. massive

  861. hall.

  862. This

  863. towards the

  864. end of

  865. Jesus'

  866. ministry

  867. to them

  868. during this

  869. ascension

  870. or this

  871. resurrection

  872. period of

  873. 40 days

  874. and they'd

  875. had a

  876. previous

  877. witness

  878. that Jesus

  879. did very

  880. early on

  881. in the

  882. ministry

  883. where the

  884. exact same

  885. thing

  886. happened.

  887. And Jesus

  888. confirming

  889. once again

  890. I've called

  891. you to be

  892. disciples of

  893. mine.

  894. I've called

  895. you to be

  896. fishers of

  897. men.

  898. And now

  899. it's time

  900. to do it.

  901. And Jesus

  902. has mentioned

  903. to them

  904. He's mentioned

  905. them on the

  906. mountain

  907. that He

  908. was there

  909. and yet

  910. even in

  911. His appearance

  912. in His

  913. speaking

  914. to them

  915. there was

  916. some doubt

  917. that was

  918. happening in

  919. their hearts.

  920. Through all

  921. of this

  922. period of

  923. time

  924. these 40

  925. days

  926. so many

  927. things that

  928. Christ was

  929. reinforcing

  930. for this

  931. group of

  932. misfit

  933. disciples

  934. it helped

  935. them understand

  936. this uncontested

  937. proof that

  938. Jesus was

  939. in fact

  940. resurrected

  941. from the

  942. grave.

  943. It also

  944. helped to

  945. transform

  946. this

  947. devastated

  948. group of

  949. disciples

  950. into

  951. eyewitnesses.

  952. We see

  953. this account

  954. throughout

  955. the book

  956. of Acts

  957. where in

  958. Acts 1

    Acts 1:8

  959. verse 8

  960. we're going

  961. to get

  962. to there

  963. in a week

  964. or two

  965. what does

  966. Jesus say

  967. to these

  968. disciples

  969. and you

  970. will be

  971. witnesses

  972. in Jerusalem

  973. in Judea

  974. in Samaria

  975. his goal

  976. was to

  977. turn them

  978. into those

  979. who would

  980. witness

  981. the very

  982. things that

  983. he had

  984. done.

  985. Of course

  986. Jesus is

  987. interested in

  988. helping to

  989. restore

  990. broken

  991. disciples.

  992. He does

  993. that there

  994. in Galilee

  995. as he's

  996. beating with

  997. Peter by

  998. the sea of

  999. Galilee.

  1000. Peter who

  1001. had denied

  1002. Jesus on

  1003. three occasions

  1004. now Jesus

  1005. asks this

  1006. question

  1007. Peter do

  1008. you love

  1009. me?

  1010. Peter says

  1011. Lord I

  1012. love you.

  1013. He says

  1014. again Peter

  1015. do you

  1016. love me?

  1017. And Peter's

  1018. beginning to

  1019. wonder did

  1020. you not hear

  1021. my first

  1022. reply?

  1023. Yes I

  1024. love you.

  1025. And then

  1026. one more

  1027. time Peter

  1028. do you

  1029. love me?

  1030. Lord you

  1031. know I

  1032. love you.

  1033. Just reaffirming

  1034. and reestablishing

  1035. in this

  1036. process of

  1037. restoring Peter

  1038. back to

  1039. functionality.

  1040. Back to

  1041. a place

  1042. of usefulness.

  1043. God desires

  1044. to do that

  1045. for us.

  1046. You know

  1047. you have a

  1048. risen Savior.

  1049. You have a

  1050. risen Savior.

  1051. Are you

  1052. living like

  1053. it?

  1054. Do you

  1055. see the

  1056. life of

  1057. your Savior?

  1058. Is that

  1059. life resident

  1060. in you?

  1061. I'm reminded

  1062. of the hymn

  1063. that some of

  1064. you may know.

  1065. It says I

  1066. serve a

  1067. risen Savior.

  1068. He's in the

  1069. world today.

  1070. I know that

  1071. he's living

  1072. whatever men

  1073. may say.

  1074. I see

  1075. his hand

  1076. of mercy.

  1077. I hear

  1078. his voice

  1079. of cheer.

  1080. And just

  1081. the time

  1082. I need

  1083. him

  1084. he's always

  1085. near.

  1086. He lives.

  1087. He lives.

  1088. Christ

  1089. Jesus

  1090. lives today.

  1091. He walks

  1092. with me.

  1093. He talks

  1094. with me.

  1095. A long

  1096. life's

  1097. narrow way.

  1098. He lives.

  1099. He lives.

  1100. Salvation

  1101. to impart.

  1102. You ask

  1103. me how

  1104. I know

  1105. he lives.

  1106. He lives

  1107. within my

  1108. heart.

  1109. Is the

  1110. living

  1111. Savior

  1112. resident

  1113. in your

  1114. heart today?

  1115. Are you

  1116. walking with

  1117. him?

  1118. Talking

  1119. with him?

  1120. Is it

  1121. clear in

  1122. your

  1123. expressions

  1124. of life

  1125. that you

  1126. are living

  1127. for the

  1128. living

  1129. Savior?

  1130. Third,

  1131. you have a

  1132. kingdom

  1133. message.

  1134. You have a

  1135. kingdom

  1136. message.

  1137. message.

  1138. Notice

  1139. !

  1140. Jesus

  1141. speaking

  1142. after

  1143. essentially

  1144. all the

  1145. programmatic

  1146. things that

  1147. are essential

  1148. to usher

  1149. in this

  1150. kingdom

  1151. life

  1152. has

  1153. happened.

  1154. And here

  1155. is Jesus

  1156. and we

  1157. see now

  1158. this

  1159. emergence

  1160. of a

  1161. church

  1162. that will

  1163. be taking

  1164. place at

  1165. the beginning

  1166. of Acts

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1167. chapter 1

  1168. and we ask

  1169. ourselves the

  1170. question,

  1171. wait a

  1172. second,

  1173. I thought

  1174. we were

  1175. having a

  1176. program

  1177. with the

  1178. Jews.

  1179. What

  1180. happened

  1181. here?

  1182. What is

  1183. this new

  1184. body,

  1185. this new

  1186. group of

  1187. individuals?

  1188. What's the

  1189. deal with

  1190. this church?

  1191. Has God

  1192. changed his

  1193. mind?

  1194. And the

  1195. answer is

  1196. no,

  1197. he hasn't

  1198. changed his

  1199. mind.

  1200. There's still

  1201. a kingdom

  1202. message.

  1203. It's been

  1204. reinforced.

  1205. The use of

  1206. the kingdom

  1207. in the

  1208. gospels

  1209. is prolific.

  1210. 57 times

  1211. the gospel

  1212. of Matthew

  1213. uses the

  1214. word

  1215. kingdom.

  1216. 21 times

  1217. in Mark,

  1218. 46 times

  1219. in Luke.

  1220. It's obvious

  1221. that we

  1222. don't have

  1223. time to

  1224. address all

  1225. the breadth

  1226. of the

  1227. use of

  1228. the kingdom

  1229. of God

  1230. that is

  1231. talked about

  1232. through the

  1233. gospels.

  1234. And you

  1235. might wonder,

  1236. has God

  1237. changed his

  1238. mind?

  1239. And the

  1240. answer is

  1241. no,

  1242. because in

  1243. 40 days

  1244. of his

  1245. ministry

  1246. to the

  1247. disciples

  1248. after the

  1249. resurrection,

  1250. what is he

  1251. talking about?

  1252. He's still

  1253. talking about

  1254. the kingdom.

  1255. Why?

  1256. Because that

  1257. program hasn't

  1258. changed.

  1259. That message

  1260. has not

  1261. changed.

  1262. Just a

  1263. couple of

  1264. examples.

  1265. Luke 4

  1266. 42,

  1267. and when

  1268. it was day,

  1269. he departed

  1270. and went into

  1271. a desolate

  1272. place,

  1273. speaking of

  1274. Jesus,

  1275. and the

  1276. people sought

  1277. him and

  1278. came to

  1279. him and

  1280. would have

  1281. kept him

  1282. from leaving

  1283. them,

  1284. but he

  1285. said to

  1286. them,

  1287. I must

  1288. preach the

  1289. good news

  1290. of the

  1291. kingdom of

  1292. God to

  1293. the others,

  1294. to the

  1295. other towns

  1296. as well,

  1297. for I

  1298. was sent

  1299. for this

  1300. purpose,

  1301. and he

  1302. was preaching

  1303. in the

  1304. synagogues

  1305. of Judea.

  1306. This was

  1307. the heart

  1308. and soul

  1309. of Jesus'

  1310. ministry,

  1311. to teach

  1312. and preach

  1313. about the

  1314. kingdom.

  1315. Well,

  1316. what does

  1317. that kingdom

  1318. message entail?

  1319. What is that

  1320. kingdom message

  1321. about?

  1322. Well,

  1323. it's a message

  1324. about how

  1325. Jesus is

  1326. the authority,

  1327. Jesus is

  1328. sovereign,

  1329. Jesus is

  1330. in charge.

  1331. It's a message

  1332. that we all

  1333. need,

  1334. and how

  1335. did that

  1336. come about?

  1337. Well,

  1338. it came about

  1339. because of

  1340. the work

  1341. that Jesus

  1342. accomplished

  1343. on the

  1344. cross,

  1345. his death,

  1346. his resurrection,

  1347. in claiming

  1348. victory over

  1349. sin once

  1350. and for all.

  1351. He put

  1352. sin to

  1353. death.

  1354. He allowed

  1355. us to

  1356. enjoy the

  1357. benefits of

  1358. forgiveness

  1359. and life

  1360. with him

  1361. through his

  1362. son,

  1363. Jesus Christ.

  1364. And so

  1365. the bondage

  1366. that Adam

  1367. and Eve

  1368. welcomed us

  1369. into because

  1370. of their

  1371. sin,

  1372. because of

  1373. them rejecting

  1374. the authority

  1375. of God

  1376. by saying,

  1377. no,

  1378. we're going

  1379. to become

  1380. gods of

  1381. our own,

  1382. making,

  1383. we're going

  1384. to do

  1385. what we

  1386. want to

  1387. do,

  1388. we're going

  1389. to step

  1390. outside the

  1391. bounds of

  1392. what we've

  1393. been told

  1394. to do

  1395. in terms

  1396. of this

  1397. delegated

  1398. authority

  1399. that had

  1400. been handed

  1401. to them,

  1402. let us make

  1403. man in

  1404. our own

  1405. image.

  1406. That's what

  1407. God built

  1408. into the

  1409. design that

  1410. God had

  1411. made

  1412. humanity

  1413. was to

  1414. exercise

  1415. this dominion.

  1416. Let them

  1417. have

  1418. dominion

  1419. over the

  1420. fish of

  1421. the sea,

  1422. the birds

  1423. of the air,

  1424. and all

  1425. the creeping

  1426. things that

  1427. creep on

  1428. the earth.

  1429. That's what

  1430. we were

  1431. designed to

  1432. do,

  1433. but what

  1434. Adam and

  1435. Eve decide

  1436. instead is

  1437. we're going

  1438. to push

  1439. against this

  1440. one directive,

  1441. don't eat

  1442. of the tree

  1443. in the midst

  1444. of the garden,

  1445. on the day

  1446. you eat of

  1447. it you will

  1448. surely die,

  1449. and they

  1450. say,

  1451. no,

  1452. we're going

  1453. to be

  1454. like gods

  1455. and we're

  1456. going to

  1457. do this

  1458. anyway.

  1459. And so

  1460. Jesus came

  1461. to fundamentally

  1462. change that.

  1463. He came

  1464. to reestablish

  1465. His authority,

  1466. reestablish what

  1467. that righteous

  1468. delegated authority

  1469. looks like,

  1470. that Jesus

  1471. submitted to

  1472. the Father,

  1473. not my will

  1474. but yours

  1475. be done,

  1476. He becomes

  1477. this second

  1478. Adam so

  1479. that now we

  1480. as a humanity

  1481. can enjoy the

  1482. benefits of

  1483. being in this

  1484. new Adam

  1485. through faith

  1486. and forgiveness

  1487. of sins.

  1488. I love

  1489. how Abraham

  1490. Kuyper

  1491. so famously

  1492. puts this,

  1493. he says,

  1494. there is not

  1495. a square inch

  1496. in the whole

  1497. domain of

  1498. our human

  1499. existence over

  1500. which Christ

  1501. who is sovereign

  1502. over all does

  1503. not cry,

  1504. mine.

  1505. Christ is

  1506. king.

  1507. we preach

  1508. His

  1509. message.

  1510. Have you

  1511. submitted

  1512. your life

  1513. to the

  1514. kingship

  1515. of Christ?

  1516. You see,

  1517. because

  1518. we have

  1519. a kingdom

  1520. message,

  1521. we have the

  1522. joy of

  1523. proclaiming

  1524. that message.

  1525. What a

  1526. privilege.

  1527. And finally,

  1528. finally we have

  1529. a promised

  1530. power.

  1531. we have a

  1532. promised

  1533. power,

  1534. we see

  1535. that in

  1536. verses 4

  1537. and 5.

  1538. It says,

  1539. and while

  1540. staying with

  1541. them,

  1542. He ordered

  1543. them not

  1544. to depart

  1545. from Jerusalem

  1546. but to

  1547. wait for

  1548. the promise

  1549. of the

  1550. Father,

  1551. which He

  1552. said,

  1553. you heard

  1554. from me,

  1555. for John

  1556. baptized with

  1557. water,

  1558. but you

  1559. will be

  1560. baptized with

  1561. the Holy

  1562. Spirit not

  1563. many days

  1564. from now.

  1565. We're going

  1566. to be

  1567. developing

  1568. this strain

  1569. of thought

  1570. for the

  1571. next several

  1572. weeks.

  1573. There's a

  1574. lot to

  1575. understand,

  1576. but the

  1577. joy of

  1578. this message

  1579. that the

  1580. disciples are

  1581. receiving is

  1582. that they're

  1583. not going to

  1584. be working

  1585. to carry out

  1586. this unstoppable

  1587. mission on

  1588. their own

  1589. power.

  1590. Not their

  1591. power,

  1592. God's

  1593. power,

  1594. promised

  1595. power,

  1596. Holy Spirit

  1597. power.

  1598. And so what

  1599. do they need

  1600. to do?

  1601. Well,

  1602. they need to

  1603. go and

  1604. wait.

  1605. Wait for

  1606. God to

  1607. allow them

  1608. to enjoy

  1609. the benefits

  1610. of that

  1611. power.

  1612. power.

  1613. And how

  1614. does

  1615. benefits of

  1616. that power

  1617. happen?

  1618. Well,

  1619. it happens

  1620. one way.

  1621. It happens

  1622. as you

  1623. wait and

  1624. pray.

  1625. You're

  1626. praying for

  1627. God to

  1628. produce power

  1629. in your

  1630. life through

  1631. His Holy

  1632. Spirit.

  1633. And those

  1634. who have

  1635. bent the

  1636. knee to

  1637. Jesus Christ,

  1638. bowed the

  1639. knee in

  1640. faith to

  1641. Him,

  1642. asking for

  1643. forgiveness

  1644. of sin,

  1645. and believing

  1646. in the

  1647. resurrection,

  1648. His death,

  1649. His

  1650. resurrection,

  1651. there is

  1652. a promised

  1653. power.

  1654. The Holy

  1655. Spirit is

  1656. guaranteed for

  1657. those who

  1658. believe.

  1659. What's

  1660. really

  1661. interesting is

  1662. we have

  1663. access to

  1664. all this

  1665. power.

  1666. And yet,

  1667. the Apostle

  1668. Paul wants,

  1669. he wants

  1670. the church

  1671. especially to

  1672. understand how

  1673. little they

  1674. access the

  1675. power that

  1676. God has

  1677. given to

  1678. them.

  1679. How many

  1680. times have

  1681. you heard

  1682. yourself say,

  1683. or heard

  1684. others say,

  1685. I just

  1686. can't help

  1687. myself.

  1688. I've said

  1689. it.

  1690. You feel

  1691. in bondage

  1692. to your

  1693. sin?

  1694. You feel

  1695. like you

  1696. just can't

  1697. get out

  1698. of the

  1699. rut?

  1700. You feel

  1701. like all

  1702. the things

  1703. that are

  1704. happening

  1705. around you

  1706. are inescapable?

  1707. You feel

  1708. bound by

  1709. certain

  1710. patterns in

  1711. your life?

  1712. You haven't

  1713. accessed the

  1714. power of the

  1715. Spirit to

  1716. set yourself

  1717. free and

  1718. enjoy the

  1719. benefits of

  1720. a life with

  1721. God that

  1722. is full of

  1723. power?

  1724. Look at how

  1725. the Apostle

  1726. Paul prays

  1727. in Ephesians.

  1728. Ephesians

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  1729. chapter 3.

  1730. And I'll

  1731. close with

  1732. this before

  1733. we move to

  1734. our time of

  1735. communion.

  1736. This is

  1737. amazing.

  1738. What a

  1739. promise.

  1740. Paul says,

  1741. for this

  1742. reason I

  1743. bow my

  1744. knees before

  1745. the Father

  1746. from whom

  1747. every family

  1748. in heaven

  1749. and on

  1750. earth is

  1751. named.

  1752. That according

  1753. to the riches

  1754. of his glory

  1755. he may grant

  1756. you to be

  1757. strengthened

  1758. with power

  1759. through his

  1760. spirit in

  1761. your inner

  1762. being.

  1763. Now just

  1764. pause for a

  1765. moment.

  1766. Paul is

  1767. praying for

  1768. the church

  1769. because they

  1770. have power

  1771. available but

  1772. they're not

  1773. using it.

  1774. They're not

  1775. enjoying it.

  1776. They're not

  1777. experiencing it.

  1778. And my

  1779. guess is that

  1780. everyone in

  1781. this room has

  1782. struggled with

  1783. that at some

  1784. point or the

  1785. other and may be

  1786. struggling with

  1787. that even

  1788. now.

  1789. You feel

  1790. powerless.

  1791. Well God

  1792. has granted

  1793. power through

  1794. his spirit that

  1795. we can enjoy.

  1796. And not just

  1797. any kind of

  1798. power.

  1799. Strengthened

  1800. with power.

  1801. This is

  1802. dynamite kind

  1803. of power.

  1804. This is

  1805. unstoppable

  1806. power.

  1807. And it goes

  1808. on.

  1809. So that

  1810. Christ may

  1811. dwell in

  1812. your hearts

  1813. through faith

  1814. that you

  1815. being rooted

  1816. and grounded

  1817. in love

  1818. may have

  1819. strength to

  1820. comprehend

  1821. with all the

  1822. saints what

  1823. is the

  1824. breadth and

  1825. length and

  1826. height and

  1827. depth and

  1828. to know the

  1829. love of Christ

  1830. that surpasses

  1831. knowledge that

  1832. you may be

  1833. filled with

  1834. the fullness

  1835. of God.

  1836. Now that's

  1837. power.

  1838. Power to be

  1839. absolutely transformed

  1840. from the inside

  1841. out from all

  1842. of the stuff

  1843. in your life

  1844. that you're

  1845. embarrassed about

  1846. ashamed about

  1847. and rightly

  1848. so.

  1849. But the power

  1850. of the spirit

  1851. wants to come

  1852. and to resolve

  1853. that in you.

  1854. He wants to

  1855. fundamentally

  1856. transform us.

  1857. And here's

  1858. what happens

  1859. when we pray

  1860. that prayer.

  1861. Ephesians

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  1862. chapter 3

  1863. this is the

  1864. next few

  1865. verses

  1866. verse 20

  1867. says

  1868. now

  1869. to him

  1870. who is

  1871. able

  1872. to do

  1873. exceedingly

  1874. abundantly

  1875. above

  1876. all

  1877. that we

  1878. ask or

  1879. think.

  1880. I'm going to

  1881. read that

  1882. again because

  1883. my guess is

  1884. we don't

  1885. believe this.

  1886. To him

  1887. who is

  1888. able

  1889. to do

  1890. exceedingly

  1891. abundantly

  1892. above all

  1893. that we

  1894. ask or

  1895. think

  1896. according to

  1897. the power

  1898. that works

  1899. in us.

  1900. Holy Spirit

  1901. power

  1902. working in

  1903. your life

  1904. to accomplish

  1905. purposes.

  1906. To him

  1907. be the glory

  1908. in the church

  1909. by Christ

  1910. Jesus

  1911. to all

  1912. generations

  1913. forever

  1914. and ever.

  1915. Amen.

  1916. Holy Spirit

  1917. power

  1918. you and I

  1919. both have

  1920. access to.

  1921. It happens

  1922. as we submit

  1923. to God's

  1924. program

  1925. and pray

  1926. for him

  1927. to do

  1928. his work.

  1929. Oh may

  1930. God help

  1931. us to

  1932. enjoy the

  1933. benefits

  1934. of his

  1935. power.

  1936. Let me

  1937. pray.

  1938. Lord thank

  1939. you for

  1940. your program.

  1941. This

  1942. unstoppable

  1943. program.

  1944. This very

  1945. simple

  1946. program as

  1947. it relates

  1948. to

  1949. understanding

  1950. at least

  1951. how it's

  1952. supposed to

  1953. work.

  1954. Oh Father

  1955. I pray that

  1956. you'd forgive

  1957. us.

  1958. Not only

  1959. for getting

  1960. in the way

  1961. of your

  1962. pattern

  1963. your design

  1964. for how

  1965. things are

  1966. supposed to

  1967. happen

  1968. but

  1969. Lord

  1970. I dare

  1971. say

  1972. we not

  1973. just

  1974. get in

  1975. the way

  1976. but we

  1977. absolutely

  1978. oppose

  1979. your plan

  1980. because we

  1981. want something

  1982. different.

  1983. So humble

  1984. us Lord

  1985. forgive us

  1986. may we

  1987. enjoy the

  1988. benefits

  1989. of your

  1990. program and

  1991. may we

  1992. see a

  1993. world that

  1994. is absolutely

  1995. blown away

  1996. by the

  1997. wonder of

  1998. our God.

  1999. Thank you

  2000. for this

  2001. time now

  2002. of communion

  2003. just the

  2004. reminder that

  2005. it is for

  2006. us of

  2007. how this

  2008. is possible.

  2009. It's possible

  2010. through Jesus

  2011. through his

  2012. death his

  2013. resurrection we

  2014. praise you

  2015. in Jesus name

  2016. amen.

  2017. Amen.
