  1. Well, it's good to see all of you.

  2. Welcome back.

  3. We had a week off.

  4. How did the week of snow go?

  5. !

  6. With the snow.

  7. Doing all right?

  8. Good.

  9. You know, sometimes, and I'm grateful for this, sometimes the Lord gives you a much-needed

  10. break.

  11. And I really enjoyed last week just being able to be home and to do the work I would normally

  12. do here, but do it at home, and to have some space to catch up a little bit.

  13. I always feel behind, so to be able to get ahead is always a very special blessing.

  14. But it's good to see all of you.

  15. I imagine that as we keep going, more people will kind of funnel in.

  16. But we're in the middle of this series on the passions of the heart, and I trust it's been

  17. beneficial for you.

  18. It has been meaningful and beneficial to me as well.

  19. And how relevant, right?

  20. How relevant the Word of God is in impacting us right where we need to hear the Scripture.

  21. And so I trust it's been a blessing to you as well.

  22. Let me pray for us, and we'll open this up.

  23. We'll get this started and see what the Lord does.

  24. Father, we are trusting you again today.

  25. Thank you for your Word, the trustworthy, dependable Word of God.

  26. And thank you that you don't just talk about problems that are other people's problems out

  27. there somewhere, and it's detached from us.

  28. But thank you that the things that you share with us are so relevant and so accessible, and

  29. they penetrate the very core of who we are.

  30. And they deal with the very issues that we struggle with day in and day out.

  31. Thank you, Lord, for your patience with us.

  32. Thank you that even when we mess up,

  33. even when we fall on our face,

  34. even when we turn away in rebellion against you

  35. and decide to have our own way,

  36. Lord, that even then you are still,

  37. extend your grace to us.

  38. You invite us into relationship.

  39. You lead us by your mercy.

  40. And day by day, every morning by morning,

  41. we can enjoy the benefits of that mercy.

  42. And so, Father, I pray that your mercy would be

  43. just present with us this morning

  44. as we work through this material

  45. and that you would use it instrumentally

  46. to change us into the likeness of Jesus.

  47. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  48. All right.

  49. So just by way of a little bit of review,

  50. and I don't want to do too much

  51. because we've got some things to cover,

  52. but if you remember a couple weeks ago now,

  53. because we couldn't meet last week,

  54. but a couple weeks ago,

  55. we talked about gateway sins.

  56. And I showed you that picture of that gateway

  57. and the land that's beyond the gate

  58. and how fertile the valleys were

  59. and how clear the waters seemed to be.

  60. And it was a picture of something.

  61. Okay.

  62. What was that a picture of?

  63. And what did we learn a couple weeks ago

  64. about gateway sins?

  65. Anyone remember?

  66. Morning, guys.

  67. Great to see you.

  68. What did we learn about gateway?

  69. Yeah.

  70. It looks fun until you're in it.

  71. Okay.

  72. It looks fun until you're in it.

  73. Okay.

  74. Good.

  75. Someone want to build on that?

  76. It never satisfies.

  77. It never satisfies.

  78. Okay.

  79. So it looks appealing.

  80. We see it like,

  81. wow, this is like Disneyland.

  82. And so you want to walk in.

  83. You want to enjoy what's there.

  84. You see things that are attractive to you.

  85. And you get in.

  86. And initially, it's a blast.

  87. It's meeting and satisfying

  88. every craving that you have, right?

  89. And then the further you walk into that,

  90. then what happens?

  91. What happens?

  92. The further you walk in through this gateway

  93. and you're indulging in the land

  94. that's there in front of you.

  95. Anyone remember?

  96. It's hard to get out.

  97. And it's hard to get out for several reasons.

  98. And I want to just talk about

  99. what are some of the spiritual reasons

  100. why it's hard to escape

  101. back out of the gateway.

  102. Okay?

  103. And so let me set this up for you.

  104. Okay?

  105. That we walk down this road.

  106. We walk down this road.

  107. We revel in the sins that are there.

  108. It continues to carry us.

  109. And now because of that

  110. consistent progression of sin

  111. that takes us further away from God,

  112. and maybe sins that, by the way,

  113. become greater and greater

  114. in terms of their offense against God.

  115. Hey, Timothy?

  116. I want you to pay attention, please.

  117. Okay?

  118. That the further we go in,

  119. there are spiritual things that take place

  120. in our life that make going back

  121. that much harder.

  122. Right?

  123. Why?

  124. Why is it harder to return?

  125. Okay.

  126. Okay.

  127. That's good.

  128. It feels good.

  129. It is satisfying in some ways.

  130. And so in a lot of ways,

  131. it becomes electric.

  132. It becomes euphoric.

  133. And we want that next hit.

  134. We want that next experience.

  135. We want that next sense of fulfillment.

  136. Right?

  137. And so we're walking down this path

  138. and turning around,

  139. it looks like we're giving up

  140. those delights that we've experienced.

  141. Good.

  142. What else is turning around

  143. and coming back hard?

  144. Pride and ego has to admit

  145. that we were wrong.

  146. Okay.

  147. That's it.

  148. That's another big thing.

  149. Pride and ego,

  150. now you're caught.

  151. Right?

  152. Now there's a sense of,

  153. this has gone public.

  154. And now there's a shame

  155. that's attached to this sin

  156. and to now admit that sin

  157. and to come and make that right,

  158. that turning around.

  159. We talked about repentance of the heart,

  160. kind of the realignment of the heart

  161. and moving back towards God.

  162. It becomes a bigger deal,

  163. not just because you're giving up

  164. some sort of delight or enjoyment

  165. that you're having in the sin,

  166. but also now the road back becomes hard

  167. because you've got to come to terms

  168. with the sin,

  169. your offense against God,

  170. and the way that it has brought shame to you,

  171. the way that it is.

  172. Others will now perceive you,

  173. and that's hard.

  174. Any other thoughts about

  175. why that road back is hard?

  176. Okay.

  177. That's good.

  178. That's good.

  179. We talked about from Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  180. beginning in verse 17,

  181. where the apostle Paul says,

  182. don't be like the Gentiles.

  183. Remember?

  184. Who have extended themselves beyond feeling.

  185. Now they've become calloused.

  186. Now they've become hardened.

  187. Now their eyes have been darkened.

  188. Their hearts have become stony

  189. and hard and calloused.

  190. And so now turning back

  191. is not just no longer attractive.

  192. It's like, well,

  193. I'm not sure that I really want God anymore.

  194. I'm not sure I really need God anymore.

  195. And that is really,

  196. that is really the essential danger,

  197. the essential danger,

  198. is what it does to our hearts

  199. and how it begins to turn our hearts off from God.

  200. That sensitivity,

  201. that tenderness that was once there

  202. is no longer present.

  203. And so you don't really need God as much anymore.

  204. You don't really want God as much anymore.

  205. And so the hard road back

  206. is compounded by the fact

  207. that now you're not really interested

  208. in wanting to please God anyway.

  209. So why would I take that hard road

  210. if it's not really something

  211. that does anything for me?

  212. And so the further we go,

  213. the less exciting these sins seem.

  214. And the more we need to do

  215. to get the same hit,

  216. the same high,

  217. that same euphoric experience,

  218. that same pleasure,

  219. and it just keeps taking you

  220. down that path, right?

  221. And this story of the gateway

  222. really describes the power

  223. and the danger

  224. of these sins

  225. that we talked about.

  226. Because rarely do these sins

  227. announce themselves.

  228. Those sins don't say,

  229. hey,

  230. if you walk down this road,

  231. there's going to be trouble.

  232. There's going to be danger.

  233. There's going to be a heartache

  234. and brokenness.

  235. So don't walk down that road.

  236. No,

  237. the road just keeps beckoning you in

  238. one step further.

  239. It seems harmless at first.

  240. It seems innocent.

  241. And it seems natural.

  242. The world would want you to think

  243. that this road is the normal way.

  244. It's the road that everyone's taken.

  245. So of course,

  246. you need to take it too.

  247. If you want to fit in,

  248. if you want to enjoy

  249. that same experience

  250. that everyone else has,

  251. then join the crowd.

  252. Do what everyone else is doing.

  253. Have some fun.

  254. Stop being such a

  255. goody two-shoe, right?

  256. Whatever they would say.

  257. So take one more step.

  258. Have one more taste.

  259. Have one more glance.

  260. Take one more look.

  261. It's okay.

  262. It's natural.

  263. It's good.

  264. And so little by little,

  265. what's happening is you're actually

  266. training your heart.

  267. You're teaching your heart

  268. certain things.

  269. You're conditioning your heart

  270. to believe certain things.

  271. And so little by little,

  272. those subtle demands

  273. now turn into cravings.

  274. We talked about

  275. four of those gateway sins.

  276. Four of those sins that seem like

  277. everyone's doing this.

  278. So this is natural.

  279. This is normal.

  280. This is what everyone does.

  281. So we should do it too.

  282. We kind of excuse ourselves.

  283. And I know this was

  284. a couple weeks ago.

  285. Anyone remember

  286. what one of those

  287. four gateway sins was?

  288. Anybody?

  289. Anger.

  290. Okay.

  291. Tremendous.

  292. And probably,

  293. I don't want to put

  294. all the guys

  295. in this bucket,

  296. but I just know for myself

  297. and probably for a lot of

  298. men in this room,

  299. anger is something we excuse.

  300. Flying off the handle,

  301. being short with people,

  302. you know,

  303. pumping your fist,

  304. being upset,

  305. pushing your way around.

  306. That's just seems

  307. natural for us.

  308. This impulse to respond

  309. in the moment

  310. because we're angry.

  311. Right?

  312. And so we excuse this sin

  313. because this is something

  314. everyone does.

  315. Anger.

  316. What's another gateway sin?

  317. Fear.

  318. Tremendous.

  319. Okay?

  320. So fear.

  321. And, you know,

  322. we could say a lot of things

  323. about fear,

  324. but I think it shows up

  325. the most

  326. in how we are afraid

  327. to take certain steps

  328. and do certain things

  329. that we know are right

  330. because we're familiar

  331. with the word peer pressure.

  332. Right?

  333. Peer pressure is a word

  334. that we hear a lot,

  335. especially for you students

  336. who may be going

  337. to school,

  338. high school somewhere.

  339. Peer pressure is a big deal.

  340. And peer pressure

  341. can be really negative

  342. to keep us

  343. from doing what we know

  344. is right.

  345. Or the fear of losing

  346. something that you want,

  347. that you enjoy,

  348. and so you're willing

  349. to make compromises

  350. in your life

  351. because of fear

  352. to get that thing

  353. even though you know

  354. it may not necessarily

  355. be the right thing.

  356. Discontentment

  357. is one of those things.

  358. And in our series

  359. through Colossians,

  360. we talked about

  361. the significance

  362. of Thanksgiving.

  363. Thanksgiving is one

  364. of those things

  365. that helps to tune

  366. our heart

  367. to see

  368. what God is doing

  369. when circumstances

  370. seem to be

  371. negative.

  372. Right?

  373. Okay, so the Apostle Paul,

  374. I love how he says this

  375. in Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  376. He says,

  377. I have learned

  378. in every state

  379. to be content.

  380. Whether I'm abased

  381. or whether I abound,

  382. whether I'm full

  383. or whether I'm empty,

  384. I can do all things

  385. through Christ

  386. who strengthens me.

  387. Now, isn't it interesting

  388. that he attaches

  389. that promise

  390. of Christ's power

  391. to contentment?

  392. Why?

  393. Because,

  394. let's be honest,

  395. we're not very content people.

  396. We tend to be

  397. very critical people.

  398. We tend to be

  399. complainers.

  400. We tend to be

  401. belly achers.

  402. We tend to be

  403. jealous of what

  404. other people have,

  405. envious of the things

  406. that they have

  407. that we don't.

  408. Their talents,

  409. their things,

  410. their stuff,

  411. the fun they have,

  412. the people,

  413. the friends they have,

  414. whatever it is,

  415. it's really easy

  416. for us to be

  417. really discontent.

  418. And especially

  419. when things aren't

  420. going our way.

  421. And the Apostle Paul says,

  422. you can do

  423. all things

  424. through Christ

  425. who strengthens you

  426. to be content,

  427. to be thankful,

  428. to be satisfied.

  429. I love that.

  430. The other one is

  431. self-pity.

  432. Feeling sorry for yourself.

  433. Nursing wounds

  434. without bringing them

  435. to God.

  436. And it's okay,

  437. I think,

  438. for us at times

  439. to really feel

  440. the sorrow

  441. and the grief

  442. and the disappointment

  443. of a moment.

  444. I mean,

  445. I love how

  446. the Lord Jesus

  447. does this

  448. in John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

  449. where Mary and Martha

  450. are grieving

  451. over the loss

  452. of their brother Lazarus.

  453. And what does Jesus do?

  454. He enters in

  455. with them.

  456. He grieves with them.

  457. He sorrows with them.

  458. It's okay

  459. for us to feel lost.

  460. We don't have to

  461. just walk through life

  462. as if we're impervious

  463. to feelings.

  464. Feelings can be good,

  465. but those feelings

  466. must direct us to God.

  467. And that's kind of been

  468. the thrust

  469. of this entire time together.

  470. See,

  471. with gateway sins,

  472. no one wakes up one day

  473. and says,

  474. you know what,

  475. I think I'm going to ruin

  476. my reputation today.

  477. I think I'm going to

  478. blow up my marriage.

  479. I think I'm going to bring

  480. devastate my integrity,

  481. my reputation.

  482. I'm going to mess it up today.

  483. I'm going to do it good.

  484. We don't do that.

  485. No, it's step by step,

  486. moment by moment.

  487. We're conditioning ourselves.

  488. And quietly,

  489. we transform our desires

  490. into demands.

  491. Those things that once

  492. kind of pulled us

  493. in a direction

  494. because we wanted something,

  495. now we're demanding this.

  496. We feel entitled to this.

  497. We feel like we deserve this.

  498. And so these countless moments

  499. of saying yes to sin,

  500. those things that once

  501. we were very sensitive to,

  502. now we're calloused to.

  503. And the longer we walk this road,

  504. the more we convince ourselves

  505. that we deserve this.

  506. I actually deserve this.

  507. And that's where

  508. it becomes bondage.

  509. We become comfortable

  510. with our sin

  511. and it doesn't embarrass us

  512. the same way it did before.

  513. It doesn't feel,

  514. make us feel guilty

  515. like it did before.

  516. It feels normal.

  517. It feels right.

  518. It feels good.

  519. It feels like

  520. this is what I should be doing.

  521. And this is where we move

  522. into our time for this week.

  523. Our heart begins

  524. to excuse

  525. and to justify

  526. our sin.

  527. And the more we do this,

  528. the more we realize

  529. that we're actually

  530. slaves to that sin.

  531. We have set up

  532. little sanctuaries

  533. or altars of worship

  534. to those things

  535. that we have to have.

  536. They become governing for us.

  537. They become our masters

  538. in a way, right?

  539. Because we have to have this

  540. in order to feel right.

  541. And so,

  542. the life of Solomon

  543. gives us this

  544. remarkable,

  545. real-to-life

  546. gateway

  547. parable.

  548. It's kind of written

  549. over

  550. the life

  551. of King Solomon.

  552. He is the

  553. ultimate

  554. gateway traveler.

  555. And so,

  556. I want to just

  557. look at his life

  558. briefly

  559. as kind of

  560. an introduction

  561. to what we're going

  562. to cover

  563. this morning.

  564. Do you have that

  565. in your...

  566. I didn't bring

  567. a guide with me.

  568. Okay.

  569. You have a section

  570. about Solomon

  571. as kind of the

  572. ultimate gateway traveler?

  573. Okay.

  574. Good.

  575. I want to just...

  576. I'm going to read

  577. the little portions

  578. of this

  579. and take a pause

  580. and there's some

  581. lines there

  582. if you want to

  583. take some notes.

  584. but I want to just

  585. walk through this

  586. together

  587. so we can kind of

  588. see how this works,

  589. see how Solomon

  590. was this gateway

  591. traveler

  592. and what it led to.

  593. The ruin

  594. and devastation

  595. that it led to

  596. in his life.

  597. Here we start.

  598. Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 1:1

  599. chapter 1

  600. verses 1 and 2.

  601. It says this.

  602. The words of the preacher,

  603. the son of David,

  604. king in Jerusalem.

  605. By the way,

  606. King Solomon.

  607. Vanity of vanities,

  608. says the preacher.

  609. Vanity of vanities,

  610. all is vanity.

  611. Now that's the

  612. leading statement

  613. of King Solomon

  614. in this little book

  615. called Ecclesiastes.

  616. What do we...

  617. Someone summarize

  618. this for me.

  619. What does vanity mean?

  620. Chasing after the wind.

  621. Okay.

  622. Chasing after the wind.

  623. Good.

  624. That's a part of it.

  625. And so anyone

  626. who's chasing after the wind,

  627. what does that mean

  628. about their life?

  629. What does it mean

  630. about the results

  631. of their life?

  632. What are they left with?

  633. Meaningless.

  634. It's good.

  635. It's meaningless.

  636. It's empty.

  637. It leaves them

  638. with this void

  639. in their heart.

  640. They're missing something.

  641. They've been chasing

  642. and chasing

  643. and chasing.

  644. And all of that energy

  645. is resulted in nothingness.

  646. Vanity.

  647. And that's kind of

  648. the headline

  649. over this entire book.

  650. And that's the headline,

  651. by the way,

  652. of this series.

  653. That apart from God,

  654. chasing your desires

  655. apart from God

  656. will leave you empty

  657. and devastated

  658. like it did the preacher.

  659. chapter 1,

  660. verses 12 to 14.

  661. What are some things

  662. we're going to see

  663. that the preacher

  664. or King Solomon

  665. pursued?

  666. First,

  667. we see this pursuit

  668. of wisdom.

  669. He says,

  670. I, the preacher,

  671. have been king

  672. over Israel

  673. and Jerusalem

  674. and I applied

  675. my heart

  676. to seek

  677. and to search

  678. out by wisdom

  679. all that is done

  680. under heaven.

  681. It is an unhappy business

  682. that God has given

  683. to the children of men

  684. to be busy with.

  685. I have seen everything

  686. that is done

  687. under the sun

  688. and behold,

  689. all is vanity

  690. and striving

  691. after the wind.

  692. Verse 16,

  693. I said in my heart,

  694. I've acquired great wisdom

  695. surpassing all

  696. who are over Jerusalem

  697. before me

  698. and my heart

  699. has had great experience

  700. of wisdom

  701. and knowledge

  702. and I applied my heart

  703. to know wisdom

  704. and to know madness

  705. and folly.

  706. I perceived

  707. that this

  708. is also

  709. but a striving

  710. after the wind.

  711. Now,

  712. help me with the story

  713. that the initial story

  714. of Solomon,

  715. okay,

  716. and kind of

  717. have to rewind

  718. all the way back

  719. to the beginning

  720. of King Solomon's life

  721. and remember

  722. that God shows up

  723. to Solomon

  724. and says,

  725. essentially,

  726. I'm going to have to

  727. kind of put this

  728. in my own words

  729. and it may or may not

  730. be fully accurate,

  731. but essentially,

  732. Solomon,

  733. tell me what you want,

  734. whatever you ask

  735. and I will give it to you.

  736. Remember that?

  737. Something along

  738. those lines?

  739. What could Solomon

  740. have asked for?

  741. Wealth,

  742. popularity,

  743. army power,

  744. control,

  745. land,

  746. popularity,

  747. wealth,

  748. all of these things

  749. and he asks for wisdom

  750. and God honored that.

  751. That was a very good thing.

  752. But isn't it interesting here

  753. that while Solomon

  754. excelled in wisdom

  755. above anybody else

  756. who ever lived in that day

  757. and probably anyone else

  758. after with the exception

  759. of Jesus Christ,

  760. he excelled in wisdom

  761. and it's wisdom here

  762. that Solomon says,

  763. it's empty,

  764. it's worthless,

  765. it's meaningless.

  766. It's something,

  767. isn't it?

  768. And really because,

  769. and maybe I won't give you

  770. the answer,

  771. why,

  772. why was wisdom

  773. meaningless for Solomon here?

  774. What do you think?

  775. In Colossians,

  776. wisdom is a person.

  777. Okay.

  778. And so he's seeking wisdom

  779. apart from a person.

  780. Okay.

  781. That's good.

  782. Do you notice that

  783. throughout this passage here

  784. in Ecclesiastes chapter 1

    Ecclesiastes 1 chapter mention

  785. that he's applying

  786. his own heart

  787. to wisdom

  788. and so who is

  789. the beneficiary?

  790. Solomon is the beneficiary.

  791. Right?

  792. It's all self-serving.

  793. It's all about

  794. what wisdom does for him

  795. and not about

  796. how wisdom

  797. is helping

  798. Solomon

  799. point

  800. to the Lord,

  801. to God.

  802. Right?

  803. And that wisdom

  804. as we kind of went through

  805. our study in Colossians,

  806. we saw that

  807. Jesus

  808. is wisdom.

  809. Right?

  810. He is the wisdom of God.

  811. He's the knowledge

  812. that we get to enjoy

  813. and so

  814. wisdom is meant

  815. to point us to

  816. to the Savior

  817. and not to

  818. redirect ourselves

  819. to our attention

  820. to ourselves.

  821. So there's no wonder

  822. why it was empty.

  823. No wonder why it was

  824. a striving after the wind

  825. because it was

  826. it was an objective

  827. that was self-serving

  828. rather than

  829. an objective

  830. that was

  831. intended to

  832. to serve

  833. and to help others.

  834. Okay.

  835. In this next little section

  836. verses 1 to 11

  837. of chapter 2

  838. I have kind of

  839. bolded

  840. the ways in which

  841. Solomon

  842. applied himself

  843. to get pleasure.

  844. And just as I'm reading

  845. I would just encourage you

  846. to

  847. to write down

  848. what you see

  849. in the spaces below

  850. all the different ways

  851. that

  852. or all the different things

  853. that Solomon pursued

  854. to try to get

  855. to try to get a hit

  856. to try to pursue

  857. this experience

  858. of pleasure.

  859. Okay.

  860. So he says

  861. I'll just read this.

  862. He says

  863. I said in my heart

  864. come now

  865. I will test you

  866. with pleasure

  867. enjoy yourself

  868. but behold

  869. this is also

  870. vanity.

  871. I said of laughter

  872. it is mad

  873. and of pleasure

  874. what use is it?

  875. I searched

  876. with my mind

  877. excuse me

  878. I searched with my heart

  879. how to cheer

  880. my body

  881. with wine

  882. my heart

  883. still guiding me

  884. with wisdom

  885. I made great works

  886. I built houses

  887. and planted vineyards

  888. for myself

  889. I made myself

  890. gardens

  891. and parks

  892. excuse me

  893. let me put my glasses

  894. on so I'm not

  895. skipping lines

  896. and planted them

  897. with all kinds

  898. of fruit trees

  899. I made myself

  900. pools

  901. from which to water

  902. the forest

  903. of growing trees

  904. I bought male

  905. and female slaves

  906. and had slaves

  907. who were born

  908. in my house

  909. I also had great

  910. possessions

  911. of herds

  912. and flocks

  913. more than any

  914. who had been

  915. before me

  916. in Jerusalem

  917. I gathered myself

  918. silver and gold

  919. and treasure

  920. of kings

  921. and provinces

  922. I got singers

  923. both of men

  924. and women

  925. and many concubines

  926. the delight

  927. of a son of man

  928. so I became

  929. great and surpassed

  930. all who were

  931. before me

  932. in Jerusalem

  933. also my wisdom

  934. remained with me

  935. and whatever

  936. my eyes desired

  937. I did not keep

  938. them

  939. or keep from them

  940. I kept my heart

  941. from no pleasure

  942. for my heart

  943. found pleasure

  944. in all my toil

  945. and this was my reward

  946. for all my toil

  947. then I considered

  948. all that my hands

  949. had done

  950. and all the toil

  951. I had expended

  952. in doing it

  953. and behold

  954. all was vanity

  955. and striving

  956. after the wind

  957. and there was nothing

  958. to be gained

  959. under the sun

  960. what do you see

  961. what are some of the ways

  962. that he tried

  963. to pursue pleasure

  964. what do you see

  965. that's good

  966. that's good

  967. and that is

  968. the essence

  969. that's the summary phrase

  970. in the entire passage

  971. that we arrive at

  972. fantastic

  973. that's good

  974. but what are some

  975. of the specific things

  976. possessions

  977. the things that he wanted

  978. right

  979. what kind of possessions

  980. does he mention here

  981. gold and silver

  982. right

  983. lands and vineyards

  984. flocks and

  985. and

  986. herds

  987. herds and flocks

  988. what else

  989. alcohol

  990. wine

  991. that's right

  992. hard work

  993. working hard

  994. success

  995. pools

  996. and parks

  997. and gardens

  998. right

  999. entertainment

  1000. right

  1001. beauty

  1002. and all of these

  1003. things are good

  1004. by the way

  1005. beauty is good

  1006. God put the most

  1007. beautiful garden

  1008. together

  1009. that Solomon

  1010. could ever imagine

  1011. and that was

  1012. good

  1013. right

  1014. but it was

  1015. all for self

  1016. gratification

  1017. laughter

  1018. that's right

  1019. enjoyment

  1020. and just

  1021. just the

  1022. experience

  1023. of having

  1024. fun

  1025. together

  1026. and

  1027. and

  1028. and

  1029. and

  1030. as

  1031. Timothy

  1032. did for us

  1033. already

  1034. that defining

  1035. statement

  1036. we see in

  1037. verses 10

  1038. and 11

  1039. whatever his

  1040. eyes desired

  1041. he did not

  1042. keep his

  1043. heart

  1044. from any

  1045. pleasure

  1046. and he

  1047. and he

  1048. saw at the

  1049. very end

  1050. of it

  1051. it was

  1052. all empty

  1053. it left

  1054. him feeling

  1055. worthless

  1056. right

  1057. and

  1058. and

  1059. and so

  1060. this no longer

  1061. becomes a parable

  1062. of a gateway

  1063. does it

  1064. this is

  1065. this is an actual

  1066. experience

  1067. of King Solomon

  1068. who's walked

  1069. down this path

  1070. and it's left

  1071. him

  1072. in bondage

  1073. and we see that

  1074. I don't have time

1075. to read it for you

  1076. this morning

  1077. but in 1st Kings

  1078. chapter 1

  1079. or chapter 11

  1080. verses 1 to 10

  1081. God

  1082. his

  1083. his

  1084. own

  1085. indictment

  1086. against King

  1087. Solomon

  1088. is that

  1089. it had led

  1090. his heart

  1091. astray

  1092. all of these

  1093. things

  1094. it actually

  1095. left him

  1096. in rebellion

  1097. against

  1098. against the

  1099. Lord

  1100. to the extent

  1101. that Solomon

  1102. built high

  1103. places for

  1104. himself

  1105. and he built

  1106. high places

  1107. and he did

  1108. this for his

  1109. foreign wives

  1110. and the Lord

  1111. it says

  1112. in verse 9

  1113. was angry

  1114. with Solomon

  1115. because his

  1116. heart had

  1117. turned away

  1118. from the

  1119. Lord

  1120. wow

  1121. what a tragic

  1122. ending

  1123. Lord away

  1124. by this

  1125. impure

  1126. desire

  1127. this

  1128. indulgence

  1129. this passion

  1130. this fuel

  1131. of meeting

  1132. needs

  1133. in his own

  1134. way

  1135. and there are

  1136. some reasons

  1137. why we follow

  1138. this course

  1139. and so

  1140. those gateway

  1141. sins

  1142. might be

  1143. anger

  1144. and self

  1145. pity

  1146. and fear

  1147. and discontentment

  1148. but there's

  1149. something that

  1150. moves us

  1151. that direction

  1152. there's something

  1153. that kind of

  1154. motivates us

  1155. to even

  1156. consider

  1157. to walk

  1158. down that

  1159. path

  1160. and that's

  1161. what I want

  1162. to talk

  1163. about just

  1164. a little bit

  1165. this morning

  1166. before we

  1167. break up

  1168. for discussion

  1169. what are those

  1170. motivations

  1171. what are those

  1172. cravings in our

  1173. heart

  1174. that say

  1175. hey this is

  1176. okay

  1177. you need

  1178. this

  1179. or you

  1180. deserve

  1181. this

  1182. and

  1183. those

  1184. four

  1185. motivations

  1186. that we're

  1187. going to

  1188. talk about

  1189. are

  1190. probably in

  1191. your little

  1192. guide

  1193. but self

  1194. reward

  1195. for dedication

  1196. that's

  1197. motivation

  1198. number one

  1199. then a

  1200. craving for

  1201. flattery

  1202. and praise

  1203. that's

  1204. motivation

  1205. number two

  1206. a desire

  1207. for control

  1208. that's

  1209. motivation

  1210. number three

  1211. and a desire

  1212. for comfort

  1213. and we're

  1214. going to

  1215. come back

  1216. to those

  1217. and kind

  1218. of talk

  1219. about

  1220. those a

  1221. little bit

  1222. more

  1223. but

  1224. we begin

  1225. to make

  1226. excuses

  1227. for ourselves

  1228. we begin

  1229. to train

  1230. ourselves

  1231. that

  1232. this is

  1233. what we

  1234. deserve

  1235. this is

  1236. kind of

  1237. the reward

  1238. that I

  1239. should give

  1240. myself

  1241. for my

  1242. dedication

  1243. or this is

  1244. a reward

  1245. that I

  1246. should give

  1247. myself

  1248. because

  1249. I'm not

  1250. getting it

  1251. any other

  1252. way

  1253. and it's

  1254. the way

  1255. for me

  1256. to control

  1257. my environment

  1258. the uncertainty

  1259. that I

  1260. experience

  1261. I need

  1262. to control

  1263. it somehow

  1264. and so

  1265. we walk

  1266. through

  1267. this path

  1268. and we

  1269. begin

  1270. to convince

  1271. ourselves

  1272. that this

  1273. is something

  1274. that we

  1275. deserve

  1276. something

  1277. that we

  1278. need

  1279. and so

  1280. these heart

  1281. motivations

  1282. are there

  1283. and they're

  1284. present

  1285. for us

  1286. and I

  1287. want to

  1288. just give

  1289. you a few

  1290. minutes

  1291. right now

  1292. to just

  1293. evaluate

  1294. your own

  1295. heart

  1296. just as you

  1297. think about

  1298. motivations

  1299. these four

  1300. motivations

  1301. just evaluate

  1302. yourself

  1303. by working

  1304. through

  1305. these

  1306. questions

  1307. and see

  1308. where

  1309. your

  1310. tendencies

  1311. seem to

  1312. lie

  1313. with respect

  1314. to these

  1315. motivations

  1316. okay

  1317. what

  1318. do

  1319. Thank you.

  1320. Thank you.

  1321. Thank you.

  1322. Thank you.

  1323. Thank you.

  1324. Thank you.

1325. Is there anybody else but me?

1326. Oh man, it's so easy.

1327. The Apostle Paul says it this way, and I remember the very early being a pastor and struggling greatly with this.

1328. But the Apostle Paul in Galatians 1.10 says,

1329. Do I seek to please men?

1330. Well, I'm so glad I'm in good company.

1331. Because the Apostle Paul seemed to struggle with that too.

  1332. Oh, that's so hard, isn't it?

  1333. Oh, that's so hard, isn't it?

1334. We want to please others.

1335. We'll do whatever it takes to make sure they're happy.

1336. How about, I'm tempted to bend truth or boundaries to preserve someone's approval.

  1337. Anyone find themselves there?

  1338. Other ones?

  1339. Okay.

1340. I regularly avoid hard things by seeking quick relief.

  1341. Okay.

1342. I regularly avoid hard things by seeking quick relief.

1343. That is the spirit of our age, isn't it?

  1344. Escapism.

1345. And there's so many ways to escape.

1346. So many ways to get away from what's hard.

  1347. Anyone else?

1348. I'm tempted most when my life is hard and I want to break.

  1349. Okay.

1350. I'm tempted most when life is hard and I want to break.

  1351. Oh man.

  1352. That's tough.

  1353. Vicki.

1354. Well, I'm just going to say, maybe relationships are sometimes making more of them.

  1355. Like the bounds.

  1356. Yeah.

  1357. Okay.

  1358. That's good.

  1359. Thank you.

1360. My temptation to be angry, fearful, controlling, intensified, and microcaotic.

  1361. Okay.

1362. Read that again out loud.

  1363. Nice and loud again.

  1364. I guess I can't remember all those words.

1365. My temptation to be angry, fearful, controlling, intensified, and microcaotic.

  1366. That's good.

  1367. Boy.

  1368. Yes.

  1369. Timothy.

  1370. Timothy.

  1371. That's good.

1372. We all do that, don't we?

1373. Numb ourselves with when we feel in pain.

1374. It's easy to numb ourselves.

  1375. It's great.

1376. Well, I want to just briefly, you have a picture again on your page.

1377. I think sometimes stories do a good job at helping to press the point in a little deeper.

  1378. Okay.

1379. So kind of look at that picture.

1380. And this is a story about the puppet on the strings.

  1381. You deserve it.

1382. There once was a boy made of wood who tried hard to be steady, disciplined, dependable.

  1383. He woke early.

1384. He did the right thing.

  1385. He kept his promises.

1386. He carried more than anyone noticed.

1387. He was a good little boy, but no one seemed to notice.

1388. So the harder he worked, the more he thought, I've worked so hard, I need some relief.

  1389. That's the motivation.

  1390. Discipline leading to reward.

  1391. Then it happened.

1392. One night, after a long day's work, he walked through town and saw a bright wagon parked

  1393. under a lantern.

1394. Music drifted into the street.

1395. Laughter spilled out like warmth.

1396. A group of boys waved over to him.

1397. Boys who looked carefree, fun-loving, fearless, and unburdened.

  1398. Come on, one shouted.

  1399. Have some fun.

  1400. You deserve it.

  1401. Finally, someone noticed.

1402. And as he considered options between what he knew was right and disciplined and what

1403. seemed fun and carefree, he thought, you know, I do deserve it.

  1404. So he went on.

1405. At the wagon door stood a man with a smile too practiced to be sincere.

1406. He leaned in close like a friend.

1407. Are you ready for some fun tonight?

  1408. The boy hesitated.

1409. He knew the wagon wasn't harmless.

1410. But the man added softly, besides, everyone's going.

1411. Don't you want to belong?

  1412. That appeal for praise.

  1413. So he climbed in.

1414. The wagon rolled through the city, streets, past quiet neighborhoods, and then into the

1415. bright, restless heart of downtown where everything moved faster and felt louder.

1416. It finally stopped in front of a towering glass structure that rose into the night, into a

  1417. gleaming monument.

1418. Every floor was pulsing with light.

1419. Through the windows, he could see the world of thrill in motion.

  1420. Music thumping.

  1421. Banners waving.

  1422. Colors spinning.

  1423. Silhouettes dancing.

  1424. Laughter bursting like fireworks.

1425. The scene electrified every imagination.

1426. This is what the boy felt he really needed.

1427. Then, in that instant, without warning, something happened he couldn't see.

1428. A thin thread, light as cobweb, wrapped around his wrist.

1429. Not tight, not painful, almost comforting, like a bracelet, like permission.

  1430. You earned this.

1431. The next week, the wagon returned.

1432. This time, the boys were louder.

1433. We told you, they said.

  1434. You belong here.

1435. And the wooden boy felt the pull of something he didn't want to admit.

  1436. The hunger for praise.

  1437. To be included.

  1438. To be wanted.

  1439. To be admired.

  1440. So he went again.

1441. Another thread slid around his ankle.

1442. Week after week, the boy went back.

1443. And week after week, thin cords attached around the limbs.

1444. He was offered pleasure for his pain.

  1445. Acceptance from his peers.

  1446. Control of his surroundings.

1447. And relief from his burdens.

1448. It was everything he had ever imagined.

  1449. Months passed.

  1450. The threads multiplied.

  1451. Still thin.

  1452. Still almost invisible.

1453. But now, when temptation came, it was no longer a choice.

1454. This time, there was a pull.

  1455. A tug.

  1456. An unbreakable resistance.

1457. A network of invisible cords that drew him in.

1458. Then, all of a sudden, the man's voice changed.

  1459. No longer with warmth.

  1460. No longer with praise.

  1461. No longer with sympathy.

  1462. You're mine, he said.

1463. And you won't visit anymore because you belong.

1464. And the wooden boy finally understood what promised him freedom had been training him for bondage.

1465. The reward became a wage he couldn't stop collecting.

1466. The praise became a chain.

1467. The control became a cage.

1468. The comfort became a master.

1469. The cords weren't forged in a moment of rebellion.

1470. They were braided quietly, night after night, from the very motives he used to justify his sin.

1471. And so, we're going to take the next 45 minutes.

1472. And you have some questions there.

1473. Teens, I'm going to have you go up to the second floor.

1474. And so, there's some questions here.

1475. But there's also some verses.

1476. And I would encourage you to kind of read through the passage.

1477. The passages together before the questions.

1478. And then spend some time working through those questions.

1479. Basically dealing with these motivations.

1480. The motivation of self-reward for extraordinary dedication.

1481. The motivation of flattery and praise.

1482. The motivation of desire for power and control.

1483. And the final one, the motivation, the desire for comfort.

1484. The motivation of affinity as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as sharp as
