  1. When we bought our house, we were not thinking about the school district as we were homeschooling our older boys.

  2. But then when we decided to send them to public school, we realized that God had placed us in our house in our school district for a reason.

  3. This is where God has planted us.

  4. So we want to be bright and salty for him here.

  5. We are here for such a time as this.

  6. So we strive to be faithful to share Christ.

  7. I've been able to share the gospel with several parents at soccer games,

  8. and I still text with and try and meet with one of the dads from Ethan's football team from back in seventh grade.

  9. My best opportunities to share Christ and continue building relationships come mostly through my kids.

  10. I make gifts, write up the cards with a scripture verse, add invitations to events such as our church Christmas services,

  11. and my boys deliver the gifts to their teachers and their coaches.

  12. The newest opportunity for me to accompany students on their instrumental solos brings me into direct contact with band students and teachers,

  13. but it is only for 10 to 15 minutes of focused practice time.

  14. So in order to share Christ and encourage those students,

  15. I prepare a small package of chocolate chip cookies to give each one after they've performed.

  16. This is a unique connection point for me as I have accompanied some of the same students now for two years.

  17. It's neat to see them in the school hallways or at a concert and have them wave and say,

  18. Hi, Ethan's mom.

  19. This is also how our ministry to Alejandro began.

  20. I have always enjoyed talking about the Bible and everyone I have been friends with has known quickly that I am a Christian.

  21. This has led to many opportunities to talk about spiritual concepts.

  22. One time I specifically remember it was when a friend who did not know much about the Bible

  23. and who I shared a study hall with asked me to tell her all about it one day.

  24. I attempted to tell her about the seven seas of history that answers in Genesis has put together

  25. and was quite thankful for that opportunity to make the truth of God's word clear to someone.

  26. I was somewhat known as the preacher of my friend group and would often be, mostly jokingly,

  27. asked a spiritual question that I would do my best to answer biblically.

  28. I also have consistently put spiritual connections in assignments

  29. and have written papers with a focus on biblical topic many times.

  30. I've been able to invite one of my friends from school to church and other events

  31. and a few other people along the way.

  32. I've also been able to invest in some friends by going to a couple of grad parties and marching band events,

  33. which has allowed for deeper and more real relationships.

  34. In school, I will often sneak Bible passages, biblical principles, or even the gospel into assignments.

  35. And through relationships and a life that strives with the Holy Spirit's help to be like Christ,

  36. I've been able to share Jesus and the Bible with my words.

  37. When we play soccer and baseball, we've been able to invite our teammates to Awana.

  38. We like to talk to our neighbors about knowing God too.

  39. I don't know if any of you feel intimidated about the prospect of sharing the gospel with others.

  40. How do we go about being a witness to the people in our community?

  41. How do we go about sharing Christ and communicating the gospel?

  42. And it can seem a little overwhelming, maybe a little intimidating.

  43. And perhaps you have, like me at some times, thought,

  44. well, I don't have the gift of evangelism, so obviously it's not my job.

  45. It's for the people who God's gifted for that, not for me.

  46. But of course, God has called us all to this mighty work,

  47. the work of sharing Christ with the people that He has placed us in relationship with.

  48. But in order for that to happen, we have to be in relationship.

  49. And we have to be available.

  50. Well, it begins, we kind of walked through this four-stage process.

  51. The Manwellers kind of introduced that to us over the last four weeks or so.

  52. It begins with prayer.

  53. Prayer does a couple of things.

  54. The first thing that prayer does is it helps to change your heart.

  55. The truth is that probably for a lot of us, we just don't care about our neighbors.

  56. We're happy to go right into the scene.

  57. We drive into our garage, the door goes up, the door goes down,

  58. and we don't have any conversations with any of our neighbors.

  59. So we miss opportunities because we're not praying for God to do a work in our life.

  60. Now, fortunately, that's not for all of you.

  61. A lot of you do engage your neighbors, and I'm encouraged and challenged by that.

  62. The second piece is by building relationship.

  63. How do you get to know and build friendship with your neighbors?

  64. Just this past week, what a golden and strategic opportunity

  65. to get out with a shovel or a snowblower and to meet neighbors.

  66. We had the joy as our family for three of our neighbors

  67. to all kind of rally around one little house,

  68. and that person brought out tea for us all to share,

  69. and three different families got to enjoy this relationship

  70. of building and serving, and that's the next component.

  71. Serving your neighbors so you can build those transaction moments,

  72. those relational opportunities that God uses just through simple things

  73. that we can all do like shoveling snowy walkways or even raking leaves,

  74. whatever you can do to make connections with the people that God has put you in contact with.

  75. Just yesterday, one of our neighbors came and brought a meal to us.

  76. I don't even know if he's a believer, but just through those relational connections,

  77. it's neat how God uses those to then give us opportunities.

  78. And that last piece is capitalizing on those relational opportunities to share Christ with them.

  79. You're asking questions.

  80. You're building friendships.

  81. And so there are heart connections that are being made,

  82. and then opportunities that God will instrumentally provide for us

  83. as we're willing to step in and to do some of those easy things.

  84. And so being an evangelist doesn't have to be very difficult.

  85. It just means that we're available a lot of times,

  86. and praying that God will change our heart

  87. and provide those opportunities so that we can capitalize on them.

  88. I trust that God will help us throughout the course of this year,

  89. the next several months, as we're working through the book of Acts,

  90. learning about the church, learning about how God is awakening hearts

  91. and calling people to himself, this church age that we can all be a part of

  92. through the power of God working in obedient people.

  93. And I trust that we'll all have the joy of seeing God work instrumentally through us

  94. as there's availability in our hearts to do what God has called us to do.

  95. Well, this morning we find ourselves in Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  96. and we're going to be focusing our attention on verses 12 and 13 this morning.

  97. But I'm going to read for us, by way of introduction, verses 12 to 14,

  98. just kind of set the context for our study this morning.

  99. Acts chapter 1, beginning in verse 12.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  100. Read along with me as I read.

  101. You can just follow along.

  102. It says,

  103. Then they returned to Jerusalem, speaking about the apostles.

  104. They returned from Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet,

  105. which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away.

  106. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room where they were staying,

  107. Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew,

  108. James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the zealot, and Judas the son of James.

  109. All these, with one accord, were devoting themselves to prayer together with the women in Mary,

  110. the mother of Jesus and his brothers.

  111. I want to begin our time together today.

  112. And really, there's only really one main point to the message today.

  113. And that is simply this.

  114. To observe and to evaluate, to appreciate this obedient return to Jerusalem.

  115. Their obedient return to Jerusalem.

  116. It's really easy to read verses 12 to 14 and think,

  117. Well, that's quite unexstordinary.

  118. That's exactly what we would expect.

  119. That's kind of normal, don't you think, Andrew?

  120. That Jesus told them to go back to Jerusalem.

  121. And, well, they go back to Jerusalem.

  122. Duh, of course.

  123. That's what we expect.

  124. But maybe it's because it's something we expect,

  125. because we've read this story so many times.

  126. And because we really haven't taken a pause,

  127. which I really want to do this morning.

  128. Just a pause.

  129. I want us to step back,

  130. and I want us to appreciate the surprising nature of this return.

  131. How essentially it's against all odds

  132. that the work of God in bringing the apostles back,

  133. these 11 apostles,

  134. I want us to see this is a work of God.

  135. Not just obedient apostles.

  136. Not just following a command.

  137. But it's the work of God in the hearts of these 11 apostles

  138. to bring them back to Jerusalem.

  139. It's an astounding, even miraculous work of God.

  140. And because we're so familiar with the story,

  141. we think, well, this is exactly where they should be.

  142. Of course, they're here in Jerusalem,

  143. and they're back in the place where many of the things

  144. that we saw in the gospel of Luke have happened.

  145. In Acts 1, verse 13,

    Acts 1:13

  146. it says they went, they had entered,

  147. they went up to the upper room where they were staying.

  148. And again, the upper room,

  149. this is where we expect them to be.

  150. This is likely the place where they enjoyed together

  151. with Christ this last supper.

  152. It was somewhere in Jerusalem

  153. that they're staying with Jesus before his ascension.

  154. We see that in verse 4 of chapter 1.

  155. While staying with them, speaking of Jesus,

  156. he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem.

  157. And so we have a tendency to hear this information

  158. and say, well, of course,

  159. this is exactly what should happen.

  160. This is exactly what we expect.

  161. And since we know this story,

  162. we anticipate this return.

  163. But when we read these words,

  164. then they returned to Jerusalem.

  165. I want us to appreciate the miraculous work of God.

  166. The spectacular nature.

  167. I want us to marvel at these words.

  168. Then they returned.

  169. How ordinary they may seem,

  170. but how extraordinary they really are.

  171. As we have fresh eyes

  172. and understand the work of God

  173. in the lives of these men

  174. and the lives of the 120

  175. that we're going to see in just a moment.

  176. The lives of this small group of believers.

  177. And here they are,

  178. right back at the beginning.

  179. Marvel at the work of God.

  180. I think we're going to be enriched

  181. to see the mission with fresh eyes.

  182. To see this face of zeal

  183. that comes with these believers.

  184. To approach and to understand

  185. that as we see God's work in their lives,

  186. we can also have confidence

  187. as we join ourselves

  188. to the building work of a building God.

  189. That Jesus has said,

  190. I will build my church

  191. and the gates of hell

  192. will not prevail against it.

  193. And so what we see here

  194. at the very start of this story

  195. is what needs to be true

  196. of every heart in life

  197. as we anchor ourselves in confidence

  198. to the work of God

  199. and the work of the Spirit

  200. to carry out this ministry

  201. of church planting

  202. that He's called us to.

  203. So briefly,

  204. I want to take note

  205. of these spectacular words.

  206. Then they returned.

  207. And I want us to understand

  208. the immediate obedience

  209. that we see.

  210. Then they returned.

  211. This word for then

  212. is a word that signifies

  213. immediate action.

  214. It's directly following

  215. this interaction

  216. of the disciples with Jesus

  217. who then ascends

  218. and the angels that come

  219. and say,

  220. well, what are you guys doing

  221. standing around?

  222. He's going to come back

  223. just as He promised you

  224. but He's not here now.

  225. And so what do they do?

  226. They return.

  227. Well, they return

  228. because they're following

  229. a command.

  230. There's no hesitation.

  231. There's no delay.

  232. There's no second guessing.

  233. They know exactly

  234. what they're to do

  235. and they do it.

  236. Acts chapter 1 verse 4,

    Acts 1:4

  237. remember it says,

  238. while they were staying

  239. with them

  240. or while staying with them

  241. and He ordered them

  242. not to depart from Jerusalem

  243. but to wait for the promise

  244. of the Father

  245. which He said,

  246. you heard from Me.

  247. Jesus had told them

  248. to wait in Jerusalem.

  249. And so He ordered them

  250. to do this

  251. and that's exactly

  252. what they do

  253. and they do it

  254. without hesitation.

  255. Marvel at the

  256. immediate obedience

  257. of the disciples.

  258. but also marvel

  259. at the purposefulness

  260. of their obedience.

  261. It was purposeful.

  262. Verses 12 and 13

  263. say this again,

  264. then they returned

  265. to Jerusalem

  266. from the mount

  267. called Olivet

  268. which is near Jerusalem,

  269. a Sabbath day's journey away.

  270. And when they had entered,

  271. they went up

  272. to the upper room

  273. where they were staying.

  274. Now it's difficult

  275. to see this

  276. if you don't have the Greek

  277. but each of those

  278. four verbs

  279. have a directional component.

  280. They all have prepositions

  281. which help you understand

  282. there's movement,

  283. there's purpose,

  284. there's direction

  285. to the words

  286. that Jesus is giving to them.

  287. This word returned

  288. has the preposition upo

  289. which is motion

  290. or direction

  291. meaning to a place.

  292. They were going somewhere.

  293. They were going somewhere specific.

  294. They entered

  295. and this is

  296. the preposition ace

  297. which is into,

  298. toward,

  299. this directional component.

  300. They had purpose

  301. in what they were doing.

  302. They went up

  303. and you can see that

  304. even in the translation

  305. that's there before us.

  306. And that they were staying

  307. and the preposition here

  308. is the word kata

  309. which is the word down

  310. or to remain.

  311. They were fixed.

  312. They were dwelling.

  313. They were put.

  314. They were following directions

  315. but they were following

  316. not randomly,

  317. they were following

  318. purposefully.

  319. There was precision.

  320. There was direction.

  321. There was meaning.

  322. And the reason is

  323. we need to understand

  324. that the powerful work of God

  325. is he's working

  326. in their hearts

  327. to move them in this way.

  328. Yes,

  329. there is obedience

  330. but it's immediate obedience

  331. and it's purposeful obedience.

  332. And it's the same work of God

  333. that every one of us

  334. can enjoy

  335. as we bind ourselves to Christ

  336. and as then we carry out

  337. the instructions

  338. that Christ has given to us.

  339. And we do it immediately.

  340. We do it purposefully.

  341. We do it with hearts

  342. that are ready

  343. and expectant,

  344. waiting for God

  345. to accomplish then

  346. his purposes

  347. through the obedient commands

  348. that he has given to us.

  349. And so the main point

  350. this morning

  351. is essentially

  352. to draw attention

  353. to their obedience.

  354. And I want to spend

  355. the rest of my time

  356. this morning

  357. helping you realize

  358. why that obedience

  359. was so extraordinary.

  360. Why do we need to worship

  361. our God

  362. because of this obedience?

  363. Why do we stand back

  364. and marvel at this return?

  365. It seems so common,

  366. so ordinary,

  367. so uneventful.

  368. And there's four reasons

  369. I want to give you

  370. this morning

  371. as we work through

  372. this passage

  373. and we see

  374. and fill out

  375. the wonder

  376. of this return.

  377. And just briefly,

  378. here are the four main points

  379. I want to give to you

  380. and then we're going to spend

  381. some time

  382. just unpacking them together.

  383. First,

  384. we see

  385. the promise

  386. that kept them.

  387. They were obedient

  388. because of a promise

  389. of Christ

  390. to keep them.

  391. Otherwise,

  392. they would have been

  393. on their own

  394. doing their own thing.

  395. But Christ had made

  396. a promise

  397. that we're going to look at

  398. in just a moment.

  399. And because

  400. of the promise

  401. keeping power

  402. of God,

  403. they returned.

  404. Second,

  405. I want to see

  406. the power

  407. that's set before them.

  408. The work

  409. of God

  410. that was so visible,

  411. so active,

  412. so present

  413. in the life of Christ

  414. and this power

  415. that was put on display

  416. is a power

  417. that's offered.

  418. And we're going to see

  419. through the course

  420. of our time

  421. together this morning,

  422. we're going to see

  423. that the tendency

  424. of the disciples

  425. was that Jesus

  426. had the power

  427. and so Jesus

  428. was the one

  429. that was going

  430. to exercise the power.

  431. But,

  432. it was a power

  433. that Christ

  434. was going to make

  435. available to them

  436. through the Spirit.

  437. And so their return

  438. is again

  439. in demonstration

  440. of their confidence

  441. in that power

  442. that Christ

  443. was making available

  444. to them

  445. through the Spirit.

  446. Third,

  447. we're going to see

  448. the pattern

  449. to guide them

  450. and especially

  451. the significance

  452. of prayer

  453. that helps

  454. to stabilize them

  455. in moments

  456. of temptation.

  457. That this was

  458. like us,

  459. this was a

  460. kind of a fickle group.

  461. this was a

  462. flighty group.

  463. This was a group

  464. that was really

  465. not very dependable.

  466. And again,

  467. the work of God

  468. and calling them

  469. to the exercise

  470. of prayer

  471. is going to

  472. stabilize this group

  473. and make them

  474. useful for Him.

  475. And fourth,

  476. we're going to see

  477. the people who remained.

  478. The people who remained.

  479. That in spite

  480. of the massive crowds,

  481. the thousands

  482. upon thousands

  483. who came to enjoy

  484. and to take part

  485. in the ministry

  486. of Christ,

  487. the only ones

  488. that remain

  489. are 120.

  490. But Jesus,

  491. God is going to use

  492. this meager group

  493. to accomplish

  494. world-changing things.

  495. And so the return

  496. is really a reminder

  497. to us

  498. of what God

  499. wants to accomplish

  500. through

  501. what we might consider

  502. very meager,

  503. meager

  504. contributions

  505. that God wants

  506. to turn

  507. and essentially

  508. distribute

  509. like He did

  510. with the loaves

  511. and the fish

  512. to exercise

  513. His power

  514. and to demonstrate

  515. that the work

  516. rests in Him

  517. and not in us.

  518. So let's begin.

  519. I want to see

  520. and consider

  521. the promise

  522. that kept them.

  523. The promise

  524. that kept them.

  525. And what I want to

  526. do mostly

  527. through this time

  528. is kind of tell

  529. tell some stories,

  530. okay?

  531. And I'm going to

  532. use some references

  533. that you can,

  534. you're welcome

  535. to turn to,

  536. but I'm going to have

  537. a slide

  538. that just has

  539. a picture

  540. that's kind of

  541. representative

  542. of what I'm

  543. talking about

  544. and there may be

  545. some passages

  546. sprinkled in,

  547. but it's going to be

  548. a little different,

  549. so just bear

  550. with me

  551. as we work

  552. through this

  553. this morning.

  554. The promise

  555. that kept them.

  556. In order to really

  557. appreciate what's going on,

  558. we need to kind of

  559. rewind to the very

  560. beginning of Christ's

  561. ministry.

  562. What did that look like

  563. and what did that entail?

  564. And we can kind of

  565. trace this work

  566. of Christ

  567. and this eventual

  568. promise that he gives

  569. by understanding

  570. how it all began.

  571. You remember

  572. that after 30 years

  573. of obscurity

  574. that Jesus finally

  575. moves out

  576. into the public view

  577. and he would come

  578. and he would come

  579. to a place

  580. known as

  581. the wilderness

  582. of Judea

  583. to the region

  584. of the Jordan

  585. and it was there

  586. that John the Baptist

  587. would have a ministry,

  588. this prophet-like,

  589. Elijah-like figure

  590. would have this ministry

  591. in preparing

  592. the way

  593. for this future,

  594. this future Savior.

  595. He was preaching

  596. a message of repentance

  597. and baptizing

  598. along the Jordan River

  599. and in Matthew

    Matthew 3:11

  600. chapter 3

  601. verse 11

  602. this is what

  603. John the Baptist

  604. will say.

  605. He says,

  606. he will baptize you

  607. with the Holy Spirit

  608. and fire.

  609. These are the same words

  610. by the way

  611. that Jesus promises

  612. his disciples

  613. there in Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  614. He says,

  615. John baptized with water

  616. but you will be baptized

  617. with the Holy Spirit

  618. not so many days

  619. from now.

  620. Remember that anointing

  621. that was present

  622. on Jesus

  623. is now promised

  624. to the disciples.

  625. And following

  626. Jesus' baptism

  627. the Spirit

  628. the Spirit

  629. then drives

  630. him out

  631. into the wilderness

  632. to be tempted

  633. for 40 days.

  634. And he's tempted

  635. there

  636. and when he returns

  637. he returns back

  638. to this region

  639. of Judea.

  640. We find that

  641. in Matthew

    Matthew 4:12

  642. chapter 4

  643. verse 12.

  644. That he's healing

  645. there

  646. and this report

  647. is given

  648. in Matthew

    Matthew 4:12

  649. chapter 4

  650. verse 12

  651. it says,

  652. when he heard

  653. that John

  654. had been arrested

  655. he withdrew

  656. into Galilee.

  657. Now the significance

  658. of that

  659. may be a little distant

  660. for most of us

  661. in this room

  662. but in reading

  663. through the gospel

  664. account of Luke

  665. it's really easy

  666. for us to think

  667. that as soon

  668. as Jesus

  669. was driven

  670. into the wilderness

  671. to be tempted

  672. that immediately

  673. following that

  674. he would start

  675. his ministry

  676. his public ministry

  677. in Galilee.

  678. When in actuality

  679. what we find

  680. is that he would

  681. spend several months

  682. maybe as much

  683. as a year

  684. ministering

  685. to the crowds

  686. in Jerusalem

  687. and to Judah.

  688. And in Matthew

    Matthew 4:12

  689. chapter 4

  690. verse 12

  691. this is kind of

  692. the note

  693. or the key

  694. for us

  695. as we think

  696. about the timeline

  697. of the events

  698. that it wasn't

  699. until his arrest

  700. that John the Baptist

  701. had been arrested

  702. that then Jesus

  703. will actually make

  704. his way

  705. into Galilee.

  706. So what was he doing

  707. in the between time?

  708. Well

  709. he was actually

  710. he and his disciples

  711. were baptizing

  712. and they were

  713. baptizing by the Jordan.

  714. We find that in

  715. John chapter 1

    John 1:20

  716. verse 20

  717. or 28

  718. it says

  719. these things

  720. these questions

  721. about John the Baptist

  722. identity

  723. these things

  724. took place

  725. in Bethany

  726. across the Jordan

  727. where John

  728. was baptizing.

  729. This is not

  730. the same Bethany

  731. by the way

  732. that we'll find

  733. later

  734. near Jerusalem

  735. but this is a Bethany

  736. on the other side

  737. of the Jordan

  738. on the eastern

  739. side of the Jordan

  740. and it was here

  741. in that region

  742. that John would say

  743. of Christ

  744. behold

  745. the Lamb of God

  746. who takes away

  747. the sin of the world

  748. and in this sequence

  749. of events

  750. John

  751. and Andrew

  752. will go

  753. and they'll meet Jesus

  754. and you remember

  755. Andrew brings

  756. Peter

  757. to Christ

  758. and then Jesus

  759. meets Nathaniel

  760. and Nathaniel

  761. brings Philip

  762. and the whole

  763. interaction

  764. of the disciples

  765. meeting Christ

  766. takes place there

  767. but Jesus

  768. Jesus is there

  769. he's baptizing

  770. we find in John

    John 3:22

  771. chapter 3

  772. verse 22

  773. that after this

  774. Jesus and his disciples

  775. went into the Judean

  776. countryside

  777. and he remained there

  778. with them

  779. and was baptizing

  780. he'd already gone

  781. to be baptized

  782. by John

  783. he'd gone

  784. into the wilderness

  785. to be tempted

  786. now he comes back

  787. to the Jordan River

  788. he makes a quick

  789. exodus

  790. to the wedding

  791. of Cana

  792. he comes back

  793. you remember

  794. in John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  795. and he has this

  796. interaction with Nicodemus

  797. and here he is

  798. in John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  799. 22

  800. he's baptizing

  801. for as much as a year

  802. there in

  803. the Judean countryside

  804. and then in John

    John 4 chapter mention

  805. chapter 4

  806. we find

  807. when Jesus learned

  808. that the Pharisees

  809. had heard that Jesus

  810. was making and baptizing

  811. more disciples than John

  812. although Jesus himself

  813. did not baptize

  814. but only his disciples

  815. he left Judea

  816. and departed again

  817. for Galilee

  818. and now the ministry

  819. of Jesus

  820. would really take off

  821. and this is where

  822. we find Jesus

  823. he's teaching

  824. in the synagogue

  825. there in Luke chapter 4

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  826. we find

  827. that his ministry

  828. that's there

  829. and he's teaching

  830. all of those

  831. who come to gather

  832. but in this

  833. ministry of Christ

  834. there's an opportunity

  835. for Jesus

  836. and his disciples

  837. to get away

  838. the ministry

  839. had been so

  840. overwhelming

  841. and the interactions

  842. that he had

  843. with the people

  844. were so difficult

  845. and so taxing

  846. that Jesus

  847. encourages

  848. his disciples

  849. to get away

  850. for a mini vacation

  851. Matthew chapter 14

    Matthew 14:13–14

  852. verses 13

  853. to 14

  854. says this

  855. now when Jesus

  856. heard this

  857. speaking about

  858. John the Baptist

  859. being imprisoned

  860. and then

  861. being killed

  862. he withdrew

  863. from there

  864. in a boat

  865. to a desolate place

  866. by himself

  867. but when the crowds

  868. heard it

  869. they followed him

  870. on foot

  871. from the towns

  872. when he went ashore

  873. he saw a great crowd

  874. and he had compassion

  875. on them

  876. and healed their sick

  877. now understand

  878. Jesus had sent

  879. his disciples

  880. on a mini

  881. missions trip

  882. they were

  883. supposed to come back

  884. and enjoy some

  885. time of rest

  886. so they get on a boat

  887. and they make their way

  888. to the other side

  889. of the

  890. of the sea of Galilee

  891. and they're supposed

  892. to have some time

  893. of rest

  894. but instead

  895. all the crowds

  896. come again

  897. to press in on Jesus

  898. to demand

  899. miracles

  900. to have him

  901. serve them

  902. and what does

  903. Jesus do

  904. Jesus

  905. graciously

  906. serves them

  907. he serves them

  908. by healing

  909. their sick

  910. and then we'll see

  911. that Jesus

  912. will then turn

  913. to his disciples

  914. and say

  915. hey

  916. it's beginning

  917. it's getting

  918. very late

  919. in the day

  920. so

  921. how are we

  922. going to feed

  923. these people

  924. Jesus is concerned

  925. not just about

  926. their physical needs

  927. but this is meant

  928. to help

  929. direct attention

  930. to the real

  931. spiritual needs

  932. that they have

  933. these people

  934. are obviously

  935. hungry

  936. they've traveled

  937. all day

  938. to the other side

  939. of the sea of Galilee

  940. they've been there

  941. as Jesus has healed

  942. all their sick

  943. and now Jesus

  944. will take five loaves

  945. and two fish

  946. and he'll distribute

  947. it to the masses

  948. 5,000 men

  949. maybe as many

  950. as 15,000

  951. if you include

  952. women

  953. and children

  954. Jesus

  955. has proven

  956. that he can

  957. teach with authority

  958. he can heal

  959. and remove

  960. every disease

  961. and now

  962. here he is

  963. not just

  964. performing miracles

  965. of healing

  966. but now he's

  967. distributing

  968. and meeting

  969. very physical needs

  970. and feeding

  971. their hungry tummies

  972. and so

  973. they come

  974. after this

  975. season

  976. this feeding

  977. of the 5,000

  978. we find in

  979. in John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  980. that

  981. that

  982. that Jesus

  983. will depart

  984. from them

  985. and they'll all

  986. come

  987. kind of

  988. try to find

  989. where Jesus is

  990. and they

  991. and they actually

  992. see him

  993. and meet him

  994. on the other side

  995. the next day

  996. Jesus wants to

  997. test their loyalty

  998. he wants

  999. to

  1000. to test

  1001. their faith

  1002. are

  1003. do you believe

  1004. me because

  1005. of the works

  1006. or do you

  1007. believe me

  1008. because

  1009. because of

  1010. the things

  1011. that I'm saying

  1012. John chapter 6

    John 6:41

  1013. verse 41

  1014. says

  1015. the Jews

  1016. grumbled

  1017. about him

  1018. because he said

  1019. I'm the bread

  1020. that came

  1021. down from heaven

  1022. Jesus turns

  1023. this into

  1024. a teaching

  1025. opportunity

  1026. he wants

  1027. them to know

  1028. it's not just

  1029. about eating

  1030. bread

  1031. but recognizing

  1032. who he is

  1033. fundamentally

  1034. as the bread

  1035. of life

  1036. in verse 51

  1037. of chapter 6

  1038. he says

  1039. I am the

  1040. living bread

  1041. that came

  1042. down from heaven

  1043. if anyone

  1044. eats of this

  1045. bread

  1046. he will live

  1047. forever

  1048. and the bread

  1049. that I will

  1050. give

  1051. for the

  1052. is for the

  1053. life

  1054. of the world

  1055. excuse me

  1056. and the bread

  1057. that I will

  1058. give

  1059. for the

  1060. life

  1061. of the

  1062. world

  1063. is my

  1064. flesh

  1065. in verse 52

  1066. the Jews

  1067. then disputing

  1068. among themselves

  1069. saying

  1070. how can

  1071. this man

  1072. give us

  1073. his flesh

  1074. to eat

  1075. so Jesus

  1076. said to them

  1077. truly truly

  1078. I say to you

  1079. unless you

  1080. eat the

  1081. flesh

  1082. of the

  1083. son of

  1084. man

  1085. and drink

  1086. his blood

  1087. you have

  1088. no

  1089. life

  1090. in you

  1091. whoever

  1092. feeds

  1093. on my

  1094. flesh

  1095. and drinks

  1096. my

  1097. blood

  1098. has

  1099. eternal

  1100. life

  1101. and I

  1102. will

  1103. raise

  1104. him

  1105. up

  1106. on

  1107. the

  1108. last

  1109. day

  1110. and you

  1111. can

  1112. imagine

  1113. with those

  1114. very

  1115. pointed

  1116. words

  1117. and confusing

  1118. to the

  1119. crowds

  1120. we find

  1121. what we

  1122. read here

  1123. next

  1124. when many

  1125. of his

  1126. disciples

  1127. heard it

  1128. they said

  1129. this is a

  1130. hard saying

  1131. who can

  1132. listen to

  1133. it

  1134. and after

  1135. this

  1136. many of

  1137. his

  1138. disciples

  1139. turned

  1140. back

  1141. and no

  1142. longer

  1143. walked

  1144. with

  1145. Christ

  1146. it was

  1147. too

  1148. difficult

  1149. it was

  1150. too hard

  1151. the words

  1152. that Jesus

  1153. was saying

  1154. were

  1155. causing

  1156. conflict

  1157. and because

  1158. of this

  1159. many

  1160. disciples

  1161. left

  1162. and

  1163. walked

  1164. with

  1165. him

  1166. no

  1167. more

  1168. so

  1169. then we

  1170. turn

  1171. to

  1172. John

    John 6:61

  1173. chapter 6

  1174. verse 61

  1175. Jesus

  1176. knowing

  1177. in himself

  1178. that his

  1179. disciples

  1180. were grumbling

  1181. about this

  1182. said to

  1183. them

  1184. do you

  1185. take

  1186. offense

  1187. at this

  1188. but there

  1189. are some

  1190. of you

  1191. who do

  1192. not

  1193. believe

  1194. for

  1195. Jesus

  1196. knew

  1197. from

  1198. the

  1199. beginning

  1200. who

  1201. those

  1202. were

  1203. who

  1204. did

  1205. not

  1206. believe

  1207. and

  1208. who

  1209. it

  1210. was

  1211. who

  1212. would

  1213. betray

  1214. him

  1215. and

  1216. he

  1217. said

  1218. this

  1219. is

  1220. why

  1221. I

  1222. told

  1223. you

  1224. that

  1225. no

  1226. one

  1227. can

  1228. come

  1229. to

  1230. me

  1231. unless

  1232. it

  1233. is

  1234. granted

  1235. by

  1236. the

  1237. father

  1238. so

  1239. Jesus

  1240. said

  1241. to

  1242. the

  1243. twelve

  1244. do

  1245. you

  1246. want

  1247. to

  1248. go

  1249. away

  1250. as

  1251. well

  1252. Simon

  1253. Peter

  1254. answered

  1255. him

  1256. Lord

  1257. to

  1258. whom

  1259. shall

  1260. we

  1261. go

  1262. you

  1263. have

  1264. the

  1265. words

  1266. of

  1267. eternal

  1268. life

  1269. and

  1270. we

  1271. Jesus

  1272. answered

  1273. them

  1274. did

  1275. I

  1276. not

  1277. choose

  1278. you

  1279. the

  1280. twelve

  1281. and

  1282. yet

  1283. one

  1284. of

  1285. you

  1286. is

  1287. a

  1288. devil

  1289. he

  1290. spoke

  1291. of

  1292. Judas

  1293. the

  1294. son

  1295. of

  1296. Simon

  1297. Iscariot

  1298. for

  1299. he

  1300. one

  1301. of

  1302. the

  1303. twelve

  1304. was

  1305. going

  1306. to

  1307. betray

  1308. him

  1309. Jesus

  1310. knew

  1311. before

  1312. this

  1313. all

  1314. went

  1315. down

  1316. before

  1317. the

  1318. scene

  1319. that

  1320. we

  1321. find

  1322. in

  1323. the

  1324. crucifixion

  1325. would

  1326. ever

  1327. transpire

  1328. Jesus

  1329. identified

  1330. very

  1331. early

  1332. on

  1333. in

  1334. his

  1335. Galilean

  1336. ministry

  1337. who

  1338. would

  1339. be

  1340. the

  1341. loyal

  1342. disciples

  1343. and

  1344. who

  1345. would

  1346. desert

  1347. and

  1348. he

  1349. points

  1350. out

  1351. Judas

  1352. Judas

  1353. I

  1354. know

  1355. you're

  1356. the

  1357. man

  1358. and

  1359. to

  1360. the

  1361. rest

  1362. of

  1363. the

  1364. disciples

  1365. this

  1366. promise

  1367. the

  1368. promise

  1369. of

  1370. keeping

  1371. them

  1372. the

  1373. promise

  1374. of

  1375. stabilizing

  1376. them

  1377. in

  1378. the

  1379. very

  1380. difficult

  1381. work

  1382. that

  1383. was

  1384. coming

  1385. Jesus

  1386. understands

  1387. and

  1388. has

  1389. identified

  1390. here

  1391. even

  1392. at

  1393. the

  1394. beginning

  1395. of

  1396. his

  1397. ministry

  1398. who

  1399. would

  1400. be

  1401. the

  1402. ones

  1403. who

  1404. would

  1405. go

  1406. the

  1407. distance

  1408. he

  1409. set

  1410. his

  1411. mark

  1412. on

  1413. these

  1414. eleven

  1415. he

  1416. knew

  1417. ahead

  1418. of

  1419. time

  1420. he

  1421. was

  1422. going

  1423. to

  1424. betray

  1425. him

  1426. we

  1427. find

  1428. in

  1429. John

    John 13 chapter mention

  1430. chapter

  1431. 13

  1432. this

  1433. upper

  1434. room

  1435. experience

  1436. again

  1437. Jesus

  1438. saying

  1439. to

  1440. them

  1441. the

  1442. one

  1443. the

  1444. one

  1445. who

  1446. has

  1447. bathed

  1448. does

  1449. not

  1450. need

  1451. to

  1452. wash

  1453. except

  1454. for

  1455. his

  1456. feet

  1457. but

  1458. is

  1459. completely

  1460. clean

  1461. and

  1462. you

  1463. are

  1464. clean

  1465. speaking

  1466. of

  1467. Peter

  1468. but

  1469. not

  1470. every

  1471. one

  1472. of

  1473. you

  1474. for

  1475. he

  1476. knew

  1477. who

  1478. is

  1479. to

  1480. betray

  1481. him

  1482. that

  1483. is

  1484. why

  1485. he

  1486. said

  1487. not

  1488. all

  1489. of

  1490. you

  1491. are

  1492. clean

  1493. remember

  1494. Peter

  1495. Jesus

  1496. is

  1497. washing

  1498. the

  1499. disciples

  1500. feet

  1501. and

  1502. Peter

  1503. protests

  1504. you're

  1505. not

  1506. going to

  1507. wash

  1508. my

  1509. feet

  1510. and

  1511. Jesus

  1512. you're

  1513. not

  1514. on

  1515. their

  1516. way

  1517. to

  1518. Gethsemane

  1519. what

  1520. Jesus

  1521. will

  1522. pray

  1523. in

  1524. chapter

  1525. 17

  1526. verses

  1527. 9

  1528. to

  1529. 12

  1530. we

  1531. find

  1532. this

  1533. this

  1534. really

  1535. coming

  1536. and

  1537. crystallizing

  1538. again

  1539. that

  1540. Jesus

  1541. is

  1542. praying

  1543. to

  1544. the

  1545. father

  1546. I'm

  1547. praying

  1548. for

  1549. them

  1550. I'm

  1551. not

  1552. praying

  1553. for

  1554. the

  1555. world

  1556. but

  1557. for

  1558. those

  1559. whom

  1560. you

  1561. have

  1562. given

  1563. given

  1564. me

  1565. for

  1566. they

  1567. are

  1568. yours

  1569. all

  1570. is

  1571. mine

  1572. excuse

  1573. me

  1574. all

  1575. mine

  1576. are

  1577. yours

  1578. and

  1579. yours

  1580. are

  1581. mine

  1582. and

  1583. I'm

  1584. glorified

  1585. in

  1586. them

  1587. and

  1588. I

  1589. am

  1590. no

  1591. longer

  1592. in

  1593. the

  1594. world

  1595. but

  1596. they

  1597. are

  1598. in

  1599. the

  1600. world

  1601. and

  1602. I'm

  1603. coming

  1604. to

  1605. you

  1606. holy

  1607. father

  1608. keep

  1609. them

  1610. in

  1611. your

  1612. name

  1613. which

  1614. you

  1615. have

  1616. given

  1617. me

  1618. that

  1619. they

  1620. may

  1621. be

  1622. one

  1623. even

  1624. as

  1625. we

  1626. are

  1627. one

  1628. while

  1629. I

  1630. was

  1631. with

  1632. them

  1633. I

  1634. kept

  1635. them

  1636. in

  1637. your

  1638. name

  1639. which

  1640. you

  1641. have

  1642. given

  1643. me

  1644. and

  1645. I

  1646. have

  1647. guarded

  1648. them

  1649. and

  1650. not

  1651. one

  1652. of

  1653. them

  1654. has

  1655. been

  1656. !

  1657. So marvel

  1658. at the

  1659. keeping

  1660. promises

  1661. of

  1662. God

  1663. the

  1664. keeping

  1665. promises

  1666. of

  1667. God

  1668. that

  1669. preserved

  1670. these

  1671. eleven

  1672. and

  1673. so

  1674. when

  1675. they

  1676. return

  1677. we

  1678. see

  1679. the

  1680. working

  1681. out

  1682. of

  1683. God's

  1684. promises

  1685. in

  1686. preserving

  1687. his

  1688. people

  1689. his

  1690. men

  1691. for

  1692. his

  1693. mission

  1694. we

  1695. marvel

  1696. at

  1697. the

  1698. precision

  1699. of

  1700. this

  1701. promise

  1702. in

  1703. the

  1704. return

  1705. that

  1706. we

  1707. see

  1708. in

  1709. Acts

  1710. chapter

  1711. one

  1712. and

  1713. so

  1714. again

  1715. when

  1716. we

  1717. read

  1718. verses

  1719. 12

  1720. and

  1721. 13

  1722. we

  1723. see

  1724. that

  1725. they're

  1726. all

  1727. accounted

  1728. for

  1729. there

  1730. in

  1731. verse

  1732. 13

  1733. Peter

  1734. John

  1735. James

  1736. Andrew

  1737. Philip

  1738. Thomas

  1739. Bartholomew

  1740. Matthew

  1741. James

  1742. the

  1743. son

  1744. of

  1745. Elphius

  1746. Simon

  1747. the

  1748. zealot

  1749. Judas

  1750. the

  1751. son

  1752. of

  1753. James

  1754. everyone

  1755. is

  1756. accounted

  1757. for

  1758. Jesus

  1759. has

  1760. lost

  1761. none

  1762. !

  1763. of

  1764. them

  1765. we

  1766. have

  1767. a

  1768. keeping

  1769. God

  1770. Jesus

  1771. keeps

  1772. his

  1773. own

  1774. they're

  1775. all

  1776. here

  1777. they're

  1778. all

  1779. accounted

  1780. for

  1781. and

  1782. we're

  1783. struck

  1784. with the

  1785. significance

  1786. of the

  1787. return

  1788. this promise

  1789. of return

  1790. and so

  1791. they do

  1792. they come

  1793. back

  1794. they return

  1795. in fulfillment

  1796. of what

  1797. God had

  1798. promised

  1799. very early

  1800. on

  1801. in his

  1802. ministry

  1803. and we

  1804. remember

  1805. and marvel

  1806. at the

  1807. preserving

  1808. power

  1809. of our

  1810. Lord

  1811. we're

  1812. going to

  1813. pick

  1814. the rest

  1815. of this

  1816. up

  1817. next

  1818. week

  1819. but I

  1820. want to

  1821. just

  1822. pause

  1823. for a

  1824. moment

  1825. and

  1826. just

  1827. recall

  1828. in

  1829. this

  1830. time

  1831. remembering

  1832. that we

  1833. have a

  1834. God

  1835. who

  1836. answers

  1837. his

  1838. promise

  1839. who

  1840. keeps

  1841. his

  1842. promises

  1843. and we

  1844. think about

  1845. this

  1846. mission

  1847. that God

  1848. has called

  1849. us to

  1850. Jesus

  1851. says

  1852. in

  1853. Acts

  1854. 1

  1855. 8

  1856. that you

  1857. will be

  1858. my

  1859. witnesses

  1860. beginning

  1861. in

  1862. Jerusalem

  1863. and then

  1864. Judea

  1865. and Samaria

  1866. and to

  1867. the uttermost

  1868. parts of

  1869. the earth

  1870. that's a

  1871. promise

  1872. that God

  1873. will fulfill

  1874. and we

  1875. as God's

  1876. people

  1877. have the

  1878. opportunity

  1879. to couple

  1880. ourselves

  1881. with the

  1882. power of

  1883. God

  1884. and to

  1885. work

  1886. those

  1887. faithful

  1888. promises

  1889. through

  1890. that Jesus

  1891. will build

  1892. his church

  1893. and the

  1894. gates of

  1895. hell

  1896. will not

  1897. prevail

  1898. against

  1899. it

  1900. will we

  1901. be part

  1902. of the

  1903. company

  1904. that group

  1905. even a

  1906. meager group

  1907. of those

  1908. who will

  1909. carry out

  1910. the promise

  1911. that God

  1912. has called

  1913. us to

  1914. fulfill

  1915. will we

  1916. have the

  1917. chance

  1918. the joy

  1919. of being

  1920. able to

  1921. see the

  1922. work of

  1923. the spirit

  1924. in working

  1925. in our

  1926. lives to

  1927. accomplish

  1928. the purposes

  1929. that he's

  1930. called us

  1931. to

  1932. praise the

  1933. Lord

  1934. that he's

  1935. given us

  1936. keeping

  1937. promises

  1938. power

  1939. filled

  1940. promises

  1941. will we

  1942. be faithful

  1943. to carry

  1944. out

  1945. the promises

  1946. of God

  1947. in the

  1948. mission

  1949. that he's

  1950. called

  1951. us to

  1952. oh may

  1953. God help

  1954. us

  1955. to

  1956. couple

  1957. ourselves

  1958. with

  1959. this

  1960. promise

  1961. keeping

  1962. God

  1963. let's

  1964. pray

  1965. father

  1966. we

  1967. we

  1968. praise

  1969. you

  1970. for

  1971. your

  1972. work

  1973. in the

  1974. disciples

  1975. thank you

  1976. that you

  1977. are a

  1978. God

  1979. who

  1980. knows

  1981. the

  1982. future

  1983. and

  1984. thank you

  1985. that you

  1986. are a

  1987. God

  1988. who

  1989. keeps

  1990. your

  1991. your

  1992. people

  1993. on

  1994. mission

  1995. father

  1996. I

  1997. pray

  1998. that you

  1999. would

  2000. help

  2001. help

  2002. us

  2003. to

  2004. surrender

  2005. to

  2006. the

  2007. to

  2008. the

  2009. promises

  2010. that

  2011. you've

  2012. made

  2013. to

  2014. the

  2015. instructions

  2016. that

  2017. you've

  2018. given

  2019. may

  2020. we

  2021. be

  2022. obedient

  2023. immediately

  2024. and

  2025. may

  2026. we

  2027. be

  2028. obedient

  2029. purposefully

  2030. Lord

  2031. it's

  2032. so

  2033. easy

  2034. to

  2035. get

  2036. lost

  2037. and

  2038. distracted

  2039. in

  2040. all

  2041. of

  2042. the

  2043. other

  2044. things

  2045. the

  2046. other

  2047. good

  2048. things

  2049. of

  2050. this

  2051. life

  2052. things

  2053. of

  2054. family

  2055. things

  2056. of

  2057. work

  2058. things

  2059. of

  2060. leisure

  2061. whatever

  2062. good

  2063. things

  2064. that

  2065. are

  2066. out

  2067. there

  2068. and

  2069. be

  2070. lost

  2071. to

  2072. the

  2073. actual

  2074. mission

  2075. that

  2076. you've

  2077. called

  2078. us

  2079. to

  2080. Lord

  2081. please

  2082. forgive

  2083. us

  2084. forgive

  2085. forgive

  2086. me

  2087. for

  2088. not

  2089. taking
