  1. All right. Good morning.

  2. We don't have the full group,

  3. and actually a number of our teens are gone

  4. ! because of the spring retreat.

  5. So we'll have a smaller crowd anyway,

  6. !

  7. What the cover says, this is not week five, it's week six.

  8. And it's not hope for the heart, it's purity in the heart.

  9. So you can ignore that,

  10. and the rest of the content is in place.

  11. All right?

  12. Let me pray for us, and we will get started.

  13. All right?

  14. Father, thank you for the word that you've given to us,

  15. that living and powerful word of God

  16. that is active, it is effective,

  17. it is working, it accomplishes its purposes.

  18. Lord, I pray that you would help us,

  19. as we seek to kind of wrap up this study this morning,

  20. that you will allow all the pieces

  21. to really begin to come together

  22. as we look at this subject one more time,

  23. and we see how to apply your word

  24. to the truths and to the difficulties

  25. that we experience in this life.

  26. God, I pray in all things,

  27. not only that you would be glorified,

  28. but that your people would be transformed.

  29. Transformed from one degree of glory to the other

  30. because we are moving in the direction of Jesus Christ.

  31. You are imprinting your pattern into our life.

  32. You are making us look more and more like Jesus.

  33. And you are strengthening our testimony

  34. so that we can be the light,

  35. the city that's set on a hill that cannot be hidden.

  36. Help our light to shine brightly for you.

  37. In Jesus' name, amen.

  38. All right.

  39. So this is the last week that we're together,

  40. and I'm grateful for your perseverance

  41. and kind of working through this with me

  42. as we have been kind of making our way

  43. through the last, well, these pathways,

  44. the roadmap that I showed you last week

  45. and these stops that we've taken

  46. to address this significant issue.

  47. It's an issue that all of us struggle with.

  48. We all struggle with sin.

  49. And my guess is that all of us,

  50. at one point or the other,

  51. not have just struggled with sin,

  52. but there have been times

  53. where we've felt like sin has had the upper hand

  54. in our life.

  55. And maybe you felt like,

  56. I want to do what God wants me to do,

  57. but I just can't seem to find a way.

  58. And God wants to not only inform us

  59. to know that he has a solution,

  60. but he wants us to enjoy the reality

  61. of that new identity that we saw

  62. in Colossians 1, verse 13.

    Colossians 1:13

  63. You have been delivered from the domain of darkness.

  64. You have been transferred into the kingdom

  65. of his beloved son.

  66. That's the reality for everyone

  67. who has trusted in Jesus as their savior.

  68. And so to live in that reality,

  69. that's really what this has been about.

  70. That's the goal.

  71. That's what we all want to enjoy.

  72. We want to enjoy the benefits

  73. of what he has purchased for us

  74. by his son, Jesus on the cross.

  75. Okay?

  76. Now, this last lesson is full.

  77. I mean, it is packed full.

  78. You may or may not be able to tell

  79. just by looking at the notes there.

  80. But what I've tried to do

  81. is I've tried to have given you

  82. as much of the information

  83. in summary form as I can

  84. because we're not going to be able

  85. to cover it all,

  86. at least not thoroughly in our time today.

  87. But I want you to have it

  88. so you can see it for yourself.

  89. And you have some verses there.

  90. You have some quotes there.

  91. And in each of the main landing points

  92. that we've come to,

  93. there are going to be five strategies

  94. this morning that we're going to cover,

  95. five strategies for helping you

  96. be able to experience

  97. and enjoy the reality

  98. of what Christ has purchased for you

  99. in the freedom

  100. over the bondage of sin,

  101. over the control of sin.

  102. So there's five strategies

  103. that we're going to cover.

  104. And each strategy has little sub points

  105. that you're going to see.

  106. And so I've included

  107. at least four,

  108. or excuse me,

  109. at least two,

  110. but most of the time

  111. four truth-centering points

  112. for each strategy

  113. to kind of anchor your mind

  114. into what does this point mean

  115. and what am I supposed to make of this?

  116. But I want to begin

  117. with this question.

  118. What can change a heart?

  119. What can change a heart?

  120. What does it take

  121. to change a heart?

  122. And maybe the companion question is,

  123. do I need to change my heart?

  124. Fundamentally,

  125. we need to believe

  126. that something has to change

  127. in our heart

  128. in order for anything

  129. to change in our life.

  130. And we said,

  131. going back several weeks now,

  132. that the heart

  133. is the control center.

  134. The heart is kind of

  135. the operating bank.

  136. It is the place

  137. where your desires

  138. give flame

  139. and direction

  140. to your actions.

  141. Because we said,

  142. what we desire,

  143. what we want,

  144. inevitably leads

  145. to what we do.

  146. And so,

  147. we care about our heart.

  148. We need to change our heart.

  149. So what do we do

  150. to fix our heart?

  151. You see over on the left-hand panel,

  152. kind of a cloud of words there.

  153. Okay?

  154. And my guess is that

  155. all of us,

  156. at one point or the other,

  157. have tried to address

  158. or counsel

  159. or encourage others

  160. in their struggle with sin.

  161. Or we have tried

  162. to get help

  163. for the struggles

  164. that we have with sin.

  165. And so,

  166. what we encounter

  167. in that process

  168. are these kinds of words.

  169. Psychology,

  170. understanding identity,

  171. having the right kind

  172. of treatment,

  173. the right kind

  174. of techniques,

  175. this behavior management,

  176. this coping skills.

  177. We often hear

  178. that what we're struggling

  179. with is a disease.

  180. This is behavior modification.

  181. We need some training.

  182. We need to understand ethics.

  183. All of these kinds of words

  184. that help

  185. in the culture

  186. that we're in,

  187. in the places

  188. where you are,

  189. not only to identify

  190. what they think

  191. the problem is,

  192. but also to try

  193. to help provide solutions

  194. to those problems.

  195. Okay?

  196. Now,

  197. I know that

  198. this is early

  199. on Sunday morning.

  200. Okay?

  201. And maybe you haven't

  202. had time

  203. for your juices

  204. to warm up yet.

  205. But,

  206. when you think about

  207. these kinds

  208. of approaches,

  209. what is fundamentally

  210. wrong

  211. with these kinds

  212. of approaches?

  213. And maybe

  214. before we get

  215. to that root problem,

  216. what are some

  217. of the things

  218. that you hear

  219. or even have said

  220. to one another,

  221. here's how you can

  222. find victory

  223. over that issue?

  224. What are some

  225. of the solutions

  226. that we give?

  227. With your phone?

  228. With your TV?

  229. With your,

  230. right?

  231. What are some

  232. solutions that we give?

  233. Okay?

  234. Sometimes we hear

  235. the importance

  236. of therapy.

  237. You need to go

  238. to somebody

  239. who can really

  240. help you with this.

  241. Somebody who really

  242. understands your problem.

  243. Somebody who can

  244. really address

  245. the issues.

  246. Okay, good.

  247. What else?

  248. Hey, yeah,

  249. set time limits

  250. on your phone.

  251. Right?

  252. This is,

  253. obviously,

  254. your phone

  255. is the problem

  256. and what you're

  257. looking on your

  258. phone is the issue

  259. so just eliminate

  260. the problem

  261. and you'll be okay.

  262. Right?

  263. Now, is there

  264. wisdom in that?

  265. Of course there

  266. is some wisdom

  267. in that.

  268. Of course there is.

  269. I don't want to

  270. dismiss that there

  271. are certain helps

  272. that we can use

  273. to help ourselves

  274. create patterns

  275. of obedience.

  276. Anything else

  277. you might have

  278. heard?

  279. Yeah.

  280. Let's find the

  281. right filters.

  282. Let's find the

  283. right blockers.

  284. Let's find the

  285. right app that

  286. can help you

  287. address this

  288. problem and,

  289. you know,

  290. all of you who

  291. have an Apple

  292. iPhone,

  293. you're getting

  294. that weekly report,

  295. you know,

  296. your screen time

  297. and now even

  298. if you have an

  299. Android,

  300. you're getting

  301. what is the

  302. screen time?

  303. What are the,

  304. where do you

  305. find yourself?

  306. What apps are you

  307. on?

  308. How long

  309. you've been

  310. on YouTube?

  311. What's the

  312. social media

  313. usage?

  314. All of these

  315. things that we

  316. do so that we

  317. can find a

  318. solution and so

  319. that we can build

  320. discipline and so

  321. that we can fix

  322. this problem of

  323. sin.

  324. Now we've

  325. recognized,

  326. one good thing,

  327. we've recognized

  328. that sin is a

  329. problem,

  330. okay?

  331. And we're trying

  332. to find reasonable,

  333. practical ways,

  334. solutions to address

  335. the problem.

  336. Those are,

  337. that's good.

  338. But what is the

  339. fundamental issue

  340. with that?

  341. You know,

  342. I couldn't,

  343. I couldn't have

  344. put it any

  345. better.

  346. John,

  347. you hit the

  348. nail on the

  349. head.

  350. We address the

  351. symptoms instead

  352. of the root

  353. causes.

  354. We're trying to

  355. fix the things

  356. we do instead

  357. of addressing the

  358. heart from which

  359. those things

  360. spring,

  361. right?

  362. So if we can

  363. just,

  364. we can just

  365. solve my,

  366. my action

  367. problem,

  368. if I can solve

  369. the sin problem

  370. by the things I

  371. do,

  372. my doing issue,

  373. then we think

  374. we've arrived.

  375. The problem is

  376. that our heart

  377. will find a

  378. workaround.

  379. Our heart will

  380. always find a

  381. way to express

  382. itself to find

  383. satisfaction that

  384. is more

  385. presentable.

  386. That maybe you

  387. don't do those

  388. sins that people

  389. will say,

  390. that's really bad.

  391. What are you

  392. thinking about?

  393. And we even

  394. know in our

  395. heart how guilty

  396. those things make

  397. us feel.

  398. But fundamentally,

  399. what we end up

  400. doing is we

  401. then replace

  402. those offensive

  403. sins with those

  404. respectable sins.

  405. we find another

  406. path.

  407. And, you

  408. know,

  409. I was thinking

  410. about giving an

  411. example.

  412. I think I

  413. probably will.

  414. So,

  415. I won't tell you

  416. who.

  417. Sorry, I'm

  418. trying to think

  419. on the fly here.

  420. For example,

  421. somebody who has

  422. an issue with

  423. alcoholism.

  424. Somebody who

  425. is a drunkard

  426. and knows that

  427. that's a problem.

  428. And it's been

  429. identified as a

  430. problem.

  431. And even

  432. confronted as an

  433. issue.

  434. Well, so,

  435. then I'll go to

  436. a 12-step

  437. program.

  438. I'll fix my

  439. alcoholism.

  440. And that's what

  441. everyone knows

  442. is an issue.

  443. But then it

  444. produces itself

  445. then in

  446. different addictions.

  447. Addiction for

  448. video games.

  449. Addiction for

  450. movies.

  451. Addiction as it

  452. relates to

  453. leisure and

  454. spending time.

  455. But, see,

  456. those are so

  457. much more

  458. presentable.

  459. And so,

  460. those are okay,

  461. at least from

  462. a worldly

  463. standpoint.

  464. But it never

  465. addresses the

  466. heart issue,

  467. as John said.

  468. It doesn't

  469. address the

  470. heart issue.

  471. So, we then

  472. give ourselves

  473. a pass because

  474. we're like,

  475. well, that's not

  476. the bad thing.

  477. I'm just doing

  478. the better thing.

  479. It's the okay

  480. thing.

  481. It's the thing

  482. that everyone

  483. struggles with.

  484. So, you

  485. know, if I'm

  486. just doing the

  487. things that

  488. everyone struggles

  489. with, then I'm

  490. not so bad as

  491. so-and-so.

  492. You understand?

  493. Now, remember,

  494. just for review,

  495. what are those

  496. presentable sins

  497. that we talked

  498. about, those

  499. gateway sins,

  500. those things that

  501. start you on the

  502. path that everyone

  503. excuses, but then

  504. it leads down the

  505. road to these

  506. things that everyone

  507. understands now

  508. is bondage.

  509. Remember?

  510. What were some

  511. of those?

  512. Anger.

  513. Perfect example.

  514. You know, of

  515. course I fly off

  516. the handle.

  517. Everyone flies off

  518. the handle.

  519. Everyone loses

  520. control once in a

  521. while.

  522. It's okay.

  523. That's what people

  524. do.

  525. Just give me a

  526. break already.

  527. What else?

  528. Comfort.

  529. I deserve a

  530. little bit of

  531. satisfaction.

  532. My life is

  533. hard.

  534. Do you

  535. understand how

  536. hard my life

  537. is?

  538. I deserve a

  539. break.

  540. I need some

  541. comfort.

  542. And so we

  543. pacify ourselves.

  544. We give

  545. ourselves a

  546. pass.

  547. And so we

  548. run to comfort

  549. instead of running

  550. to God when

  551. things are hard.

  552. We want to

  553. create escapes.

  554. We want to

  555. pacify ourselves

  556. instead of

  557. anchoring ourselves

  558. in the,

  559. God, this is

  560. really hard and

  561. I know you

  562. can help me.

  563. I know that

  564. you're bigger

  565. than this.

  566. What else?

  567. Remember?

  568. Anything else?

  569. Fear.

  570. Fear is one

  571. and I think we

  572. actually talked

  573. about that as

  574. kind of a

  575. heart motivation

  576. and a lot of

  577. these things are

  578. kind of blurred

  579. together and we

  580. want control.

  581. We are afraid and

  582. so we want to,

  583. again, as it

  584. relates to control,

  585. we want to remove

  586. the potential fear

  587. issues away from

  588. us and so we'll

  589. do what we need

  590. to do to ease

  591. our hearts.

  592. And our hearts

  593. drive us to

  594. sin that we

  595. then excuse

  596. because it's not

  597. so bad as this

  598. other sin over

  599. here.

  600. And so we're

  601. building patterns,

  602. aren't we?

  603. We're building

  604. pathways, aren't

  605. we?

  606. We're teaching

  607. ourselves that

  608. sin is okay.

  609. That certain sins

  610. might be really

  611. bad but other

  612. sins, eh, you

  613. know what?

  614. God understands.

  615. God will forgive

  616. and of course he

  617. does.

  618. God's grace will

  619. forgive.

  620. But as soon as we

  621. come to a place

  622. of saying, you

  623. know what?

  624. I'm okay.

  625. Then we remove

  626. the opportunity for

  627. real change to

  628. actually happen.

  629. And so there's no

  630. wonder why we

  631. continue to struggle

  632. with sin because

  633. we have all these

  634. other sins that

  635. we're just okay

  636. with.

  637. We've just

  638. learned to say,

  639. well, it's fine.

  640. You know, I'll

  641. work on this

  642. eventually but,

  643. eh, you know,

  644. everyone is

  645. struggling with

  646. this so I will

  647. too.

  648. And that's the

  649. problem.

  650. The problem is we

  651. give ourself a

  652. pass.

  653. So what are the

  654. strategies that we

  655. need to put in

  656. place?

  657. And I've already

  658. taken up too much

  659. time so I want to

  660. try to knock these

  661. out a little bit

  662. faster.

  663. First is you need

  664. to become a

  665. disciple of the

  666. gospel of grace.

  667. Become a disciple

  668. of the gospel of

  669. grace.

  670. Now, I know that's

  671. kind of ambiguous a

  672. little bit.

  673. In real practical

  674. terms is learn that

  675. Jesus has answers for

  676. your sin.

  677. And learn that his

  678. solutions are found

  679. in his word.

  680. word.

  681. And it's found in the

  682. gospel.

  683. Okay?

  684. That as we come to

  685. know who Jesus is,

  686. we come to know what

  687. Jesus did, we come to

  688. understand our identity

  689. because of what Christ

  690. accomplished for us,

  691. then we can begin to

  692. enjoy the benefits of

  693. that as we say, no,

  694. wait a second.

  695. God has done this for

  696. me.

  697. God has called me to

  698. this.

  699. God has delivered me

  700. from this sin.

  701. This is the new,

  702. should be the new

  703. posture of my heart.

  704. So, Lord, help this to

  705. now be the expression,

  706. the consistent expression

  707. of my life.

  708. Well, we talked about

  709. the importance of

  710. confession and

  711. repentance.

  712. And again, each of

  713. these are going to have

  714. some truth statements.

  715. I'm not going to be able

  716. to cover them all.

  717. But this first true

  718. statement here is

  719. confession brings sin

  720. into the light where

  721. grace can work.

  722. Hidden sin thrives in

  723. secrecy.

  724. I want us to pause for a

  725. moment.

  726. I think we all would

  727. acknowledge this is true.

  728. We would all say, yeah,

  729. confession is really

  730. important.

  731. So why is confession

  732. hard?

  733. If you're honest, why is

  734. confession hard?

  735. We don't want to see

  736. the truth because it's

  737. stinking bright.

  738. Okay.

  739. I'll get to that in a

  740. second.

  741. What did you say?

  742. Often we don't want to

  743. see the truth, but we

  744. don't want to.

  745. Okay.

  746. So we don't want to face

  747. the reality of what

  748. we're confessing.

  749. We get this impression

  750. that if we push this

  751. down, if we bury it,

  752. that maybe no one will

  753. really know who we are.

  754. No one will really

  755. come to appreciate or

  756. see what we know to be

  757. true of ourselves.

  758. And somehow we feel

  759. like if we don't push

  760. it out in the open,

  761. then maybe we can also

  762. bury that truth.

  763. And it's not really

  764. going to be very real

  765. for us too.

  766. Okay.

  767. So we don't confess

  768. because we really don't

  769. want to admit how bad

  770. things are.

  771. Okay.

  772. Pastor, you said it

  773. was an issue of pride.

  774. Okay.

  775. What about pride is in

  776. the way?

  777. It's good.

  778. Okay.

  779. So we don't want to

  780. confess sin because we

  781. want to give everybody

  782. the impression that we

  783. have it together.

  784. Every time I sin, I

  785. thought it was a good

  786. idea.

  787. Every time we sin, we

  788. think it's a good idea.

  789. And maybe even the times

  790. we know it's not a good

  791. idea, we believe that

  792. somehow this is going to

  793. get me what I want

  794. because God is holding

  795. out on me in some way.

  796. Right?

  797. And that's a real

  798. problem.

  799. Good.

  800. What else?

  801. Okay.

  802. I don't want to bring

  803. it out and now I have

  804. accountability.

  805. It's good.

  806. I don't want people to

  807. know because I don't

  808. want the accountability.

  809. And let's be honest,

  810. confession makes things

  811. really public.

  812. There's no wonder why we

  813. don't confess.

  814. Because oftentimes there

  815. are real consequences

  816. to confession.

  817. confession.

  818. And we think that if we

  819. just live with it a

  820. little longer, people

  821. will not just not know.

  822. God will give us a pass

  823. on that.

  824. And then somehow those

  825. consequences aren't

  826. going to come to bear on

  827. my heart.

  828. One of the things that my

  829. dad said to me constantly,

  830. he says, son, make sure

  831. your sin will find you

  832. out.

  833. Make sure your sin will

  834. find you out.

  835. That's a verse, by the

  836. way.

  837. And that's a good path

  838. because it cuts short

  839. this process of sin

  840. working in our life and

  841. creating bondage and

  842. idolatry and all of that

  843. brokenness that happens

  844. in relationships,

  845. brokenness that happens

  846. with not being able to

  847. serve in the way that we

  848. want to, the testimony

  849. that gets sullied.

  850. And then the longer we

  851. walk down the path, the

  852. more we feel comfortable

  853. with that sin.

  854. And it calluses our

  855. hearts.

  856. And all of that is what

  857. we can relinquish if we

  858. just say, you know what,

  859. I'm going to cut this

  860. short.

  861. It's going to be really

  862. hard, but it's going to be

  863. so much better for me to

  864. just get it out in the

  865. open.

  866. And it doesn't always have

  867. to be out in the open

  868. with everybody, okay?

  869. But getting it out in the

  870. open with somebody who you

  871. have a relationship with

  872. who can really help in a

  873. significant way, helping

  874. overcome that sin, right?

  875. Good.

  876. Yeah, Elliot.

  877. I think sometimes we

  878. struggle with confession

  879. because we don't

  880. understand the events of

  881. others.

  882. Okay.

  883. Think about David.

  884. Yeah, that's good.

  885. And then it wasn't

  886. only for you to not

  887. confess it when Nathan

  888. came to him.

  889. That's good.

  890. That's good.

  891. That's right.

  892. That's good.

  893. And so the blindness of

  894. David's heart didn't start

  895. with a sin with Bathsheba.

  896. Okay?

  897. And that's how it always

  898. is.

  899. The blindness of our

  900. heart starts much, much

  901. earlier in the things that

  902. we give a pass to before

  903. we ever arrive at the big

  904. sins.

  905. Okay?

  906. That's the gateway that

  907. we're talking about.

  908. We give ourself a pass when

  909. it comes to comfort.

  910. We give ourself a pass when

  911. it comes to anger.

  912. We give ourself a pass when

  913. it comes to needing to be

  914. in control and not trusting

  915. God for his provision.

  916. All of those things.

  917. And so we're like, no,

  918. that one's okay, but this

  919. one over here, well, I've

  920. got to stay away from that

  921. one.

  922. But all along, the way we

  923. are cutting these grooves

  924. moves in our life.

  925. There's no wonder why we

  926. end up where we end up.

  927. It doesn't happen overnight.

  928. And so it requires us to

  929. have a very clear perspective,

  930. a very true perspective of

  931. the nature of our hearts

  932. early on so that we can put

  933. sin to death before it ever

  934. becomes a tree in our life.

  935. Okay?

  936. And we're pulling it out by

  937. the roots.

  938. John, just going back to

  939. what you said, we don't

  940. understand the root of the

  941. problem.

  942. We don't understand the

  943. significance of the issue.

  944. We're dealing with symptoms

  945. instead of root issues.

  946. And so we never pull it up

  947. by the root.

  948. We're just kind of, hey,

  949. people can see that.

  950. I'm chopping it down.

  951. People can see it.

  952. I'm chopping it down.

  953. But it never fixes the

  954. root problems.

  955. You know what I'm saying?

  956. Okay.

  957. I love what David says.

  958. He says in Psalm 32, 5,

  959. I acknowledge my sin to

  960. you.

  961. I did not cover my iniquity.

  962. I said, I will confess my

  963. transgressions to the Lord

  964. and you forgave the iniquity

  965. of my sins.

  966. That's the prize.

  967. The prize of confession.

  968. The prize of repentance.

  969. And we talked about how we

  970. need to keep calibrating our

  971. heart, keep tuning our heart

  972. to the standard that God has

  973. given to us.

  974. And that's what repentance

  975. does.

  976. It continues to compare our

  977. life with the standard of

  978. God's word.

  979. And there's a turning.

  980. There's a direction to

  981. repentance.

  982. There's a direction to our

  983. life that happens.

  984. So confession repentance is

  985. the beginning of that

  986. process.

  987. Saying out loud what is

  988. really the problem.

  989. Coming to a place of

  990. admitting that there's an

  991. issue.

  992. Not trying to conceal it.

  993. The next is weakness and

  994. humility.

  995. humility.

  996. Here's a quote from the

  997. book.

  998. It says, victory is not

  999. found in saying, I can do

  1000. it.

1001. I can make it happen.

  1002. I can try harder.

1003. Or I can be stronger.

  1004. Victory is found in

  1005. acknowledging weakness and

  1006. abandoning self-effort.

  1007. What do you think?

1008. Do you agree or disagree with

  1009. that statement?

  1010. What do you think?

  1011. Okay.

1012. Do you agree with that?

  1013. Okay.

1014. So it's there in your

  1015. guide.

1016. Victory is not found in

1017. saying, I can do it.

1018. I can make it happen.

  1019. I can try harder.

  1020. I can be stronger.

  1021. Victory is found in

  1022. acknowledging weakness and

  1023. abandoning self-effort.

  1024. What do you think?

  1025. Is that true?

  1026. That's good.

  1027. That's good.

  1028. Sure.

  1029. And probably not just

1030. hard for us to do in

1031. trusting God in that way.

  1032. I think it's probably

1033. hard for us to really

  1034. understand.

  1035. Okay.

  1036. Because this doesn't,

1037. this isn't the let go

  1038. and let God.

  1039. That's not what we're

  1040. talking about here.

  1041. Okay.

  1042. And I think that's the,

  1043. that's the opposite

  1044. pendulum swing.

  1045. We're like, well, I'll

1046. just let go and let God

  1047. and I guess if I sin,

  1048. then it's God's fault

  1049. because he hasn't kept

  1050. me from it.

  1051. No, that's, that's not

  1052. right either.

  1053. No, it's not, well, I

1054. can do it all on my

  1055. own.

1056. That's the one side of

  1057. the pendulum.

1058. Or the God will do it

  1059. all for me.

1060. That's the other side of

  1061. the pendulum.

1062. It's, no, God has given

  1063. me very clear instructions

  1064. in his word.

1065. And by his grace, he has

1066. given me the spirit with

1067. all the power I could

1068. ever need to obey the

  1069. instructions that he's

  1070. given to me.

1071. So I will apply my

1072. heart to know what God

  1073. says.

1074. And I will apply my

  1075. heart to finding

  1076. strength from the Lord

1077. to do what he's called

  1078. me to do.

  1079. It's not about self-help.

  1080. It's about understanding,

  1081. identifying God's

  1082. strategy and following

  1083. the strategy that he

  1084. gives to us.

  1085. It says here,

  1086. self-confidence fuels

  1087. failure.

  1088. Humility invites help.

  1089. pride isolates.

  1090. Humility draws strength

  1091. from God.

1092. And then drop down to

  1093. number three.

  1094. Humility keeps believers

  1095. teachable and accountable.

  1096. Pride resists correction.

  1097. Humility welcomes it.

1098. I love what we find in

  1099. James chapter 4 verse 6.

    James 4:6

  1100. And here's where the

1101. gospel of grace comes to

  1102. play.

  1103. Understanding what God has

  1104. done for us.

  1105. Understanding the grace

  1106. that's available for us

1107. and how we get it.

1108. How do we get grace?

  1109. What does grace

  1110. accomplish?

  1111. Well, notice, he, speaking

1112. of God, he gives more

  1113. grace.

  1114. Therefore, it says, God

  1115. opposes the proud.

1116. He gives grace to the

  1117. humble.

  1118. So there's got to be a

1119. spot in our life where

1120. we say, you know what?

1121. I cannot do this on my

  1122. own.

  1123. I am not capable.

1124. This is not something I

1125. can work out on my own

  1126. strength.

  1127. This isn't something I

1128. can figure out on my

  1129. own.

1130. I need not only to

1131. invite the help of the

1132. word of God and the

  1133. spirit of God.

1134. I need to be in the

  1135. company with godly men,

  1136. godly women, who can

1137. help me as I am.

1138. I go in this journey.

1139. But because as soon as

  1140. the enemy has isolated

1141. you, and you think you

1142. can do it alone, you've

  1143. lost.

1144. At least that's the first

  1145. step of losing the

  1146. battle.

  1147. This really important

  1148. passage, 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 12:9

  1149. chapter 12, verse 9,

  1150. where Paul is talking

1151. about his thorn in the

  1152. flesh.

  1153. And he says, he

  1154. prayed.

  1155. Remember, he prays that

  1156. God would take that

  1157. thorn away, and God

  1158. says, I got a better

  1159. answer for you.

  1160. And I think it's

  1161. important to understand

1162. that God did not say

  1163. no.

1164. But God had a better

  1165. yes.

  1166. This was his yes.

1167. He said, my grace is

  1168. sufficient for you,

  1169. Paul.

  1170. You want power?

  1171. You want strength?

  1172. Well, there's better

  1173. strength.

  1174. Because my power is

  1175. made perfect in your

  1176. weakness.

  1177. So therefore, I will

  1178. boast all the more

  1179. gladly of my weakness,

1180. so the power of Christ

  1181. may rest upon me.

  1182. You know, I don't need

  1183. you, God, now.

  1184. I understand.

  1185. I don't need power that's

  1186. resident within myself.

1187. I need power that comes

  1188. from you.

1189. And so, I'm praying that

  1190. you would remove this

1191. thorn in the flesh so I

1192. can have strength to do

  1193. the ministry you've

  1194. called me to.

  1195. But I'm realizing now,

  1196. because you've come and

  1197. corrected my perspective,

1198. that I get actually more

  1199. power when I'm weak,

  1200. physically weak.

  1201. I get more power when I

1202. come to the place of my

  1203. own limitations.

1204. And I begin to depend on

  1205. your sufficiency.

  1206. That's what I'm going to

1207. now begin to rejoice in.

1208. Coming to a place of

  1209. recognizing our weakness.

1210. Coming to a place of

  1211. humility.

  1212. Next, we get freedom.

  1213. We can't have freedom

  1214. from sin's dominion.

  1215. You see, Christ has

  1216. broken sin's authority,

  1217. not merely its

  1218. consequences.

1219. Sin may tempt, but it

  1220. no longer rules.

1221. That's the reality of our

  1222. life now.

  1223. Colossians 1, 13 and 14.

1224. He has delivered us from

  1225. the domain of darkness

1226. and transferred us to the

  1227. kingdom of his beloved

  1228. son.

1229. Now, wait a second, Paul.

  1230. I'm still here.

1231. How has he transferred me?

  1232. What is your problem?

  1233. What's going on?

1234. Well, the reality of your

1235. life is that you are in

  1236. Christ.

1237. And if Christ is there,

  1238. then you are there.

1239. It's kind of the already

1240. not yet that we find

1241. throughout so much of the

  1242. scripture.

1243. That the reality has been

  1244. accomplished.

1245. And to the extent that in

  1246. Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  1247. we're already seated with

1248. him in the heavenly places,

  1249. actually Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1250. 2, we're seated with him

  1251. in the heavenly places.

  1252. That's where we are.

  1253. In God's mind, that's the

  1254. reality that's been

  1255. accomplished for us.

1256. We have to not be okay

1257. with sin because we need

1258. to understand that if we're

  1259. going to live consistently

1260. with the identity that God

  1261. has accomplished for us,

  1262. that we've been delivered.

  1263. So don't be a walking

  1264. contradiction.

  1265. Don't be okay by being a

  1266. walking contradiction.

  1267. All right, moving on.

  1268. Living in grace.

1269. Well, what does this mean?

1270. What does it mean to live

  1271. in grace?

1272. I like this statement from

  1273. the book.

  1274. Grace does more than

  1275. impart knowledge.

1276. It serves to train the

  1277. believer in godly living.

1278. Grace does more than fix

  1279. my present sinful condition.

  1280. Grace is what fuels

  1281. obedience.

1282. As I come to understand

  1283. what Christ has accomplished

1284. for me, it drives me,

1285. it compels me to want

  1286. to obey him more.

1287. That's how it should work.

  1288. Living in grace produces

  1289. perseverance, not panic.

  1290. failures become occasions

  1291. for growth rather than

  1292. surrender.

1293. As I'm learning that God

  1294. does forgive sins,

1295. then it helps me not to

  1296. give up.

1297. It helps me not to feel

  1298. like a failure that I'm

  1299. stuck.

1300. It helps me understand that

  1301. God's grace fixes that

  1302. issue in my life,

1303. that brokenness in my life,

1304. so that I can move beyond

1305. it and enjoy the benefits

  1306. of that continuing grace

1307. that he has invited me to

  1308. experience.

  1309. I don't have to be stuck

  1310. in my sin.

  1311. I don't have to be a

  1312. captive to it anymore.

  1313. I don't have to feel

  1314. defeated because of what

  1315. Christ's grace has

  1316. accomplished for me.

  1317. Does that make sense?

  1318. What a beautiful thing.

  1319. And because of that,

  1320. grace sustains long-term

  1321. obedience.

  1322. independence.

  1323. See, change is not,

  1324. change is progressive.

  1325. It's not instant.

1326. We want, we live in an

  1327. instant world.

  1328. We want the instant

  1329. product.

1330. But it is a measure of

1331. God's grace to lead us

1332. one step at a time in the

  1333. process of sanctification,

  1334. learning more and more

  1335. about his faithfulness.

  1336. Strategy number two.

1337. Strategy number two is to

  1338. clean up your life.

1339. Not just be a disciple of

1340. grace, but now take sin

  1341. sin seriously.

1342. To clean up your life

  1343. through thoroughly and

  1344. biblically.

1345. And the standard that God

1346. has given to us is a

  1347. standard of himself.

  1348. It's a standard of

  1349. holiness.

  1350. And we're familiar with

1351. what Peter says in 1

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  1352. Peter chapter 1.

1353. He says, be holy as I am

  1354. holy.

  1355. That's the standard.

1356. And we're like, come on.

  1357. That's a little unrealistic,

  1358. don't you think?

  1359. No, it's not unrealistic.

1360. It's what God has called

  1361. us to.

  1362. And it's so significant

  1363. that God actually says,

1364. well, this is my will.

1365. This is my will for you.

  1366. 1 Thessalonians 4, 3 to 8

1367. says, this is the will of

  1368. God, your sanctification,

  1369. to be like me.

  1370. You belong to me.

  1371. You represent me.

1372. And so I want you to

  1373. look like me.

1374. So God is intent on

  1375. working out this

  1376. sanctification process in

  1377. us.

1378. And how does it look?

  1379. In 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

1380. chapter 4, it says that

  1381. you abstain from sexual

  1382. immorality.

1383. That each one of you

  1384. knows how to control

  1385. his own body in

  1386. holiness and honor.

1387. Not in the passions of

  1388. lust like the Gentiles

1389. who do not know God.

  1390. and that no one

  1391. transgress in wrong

  1392. his brother in this

  1393. matter because the

1394. Lord is an avenger in

  1395. all these things.

  1396. As we told you

  1397. beforehand and solemnly

  1398. warned you.

1399. For God has not called

1400. us to impurity but in

  1401. holiness.

  1402. Therefore, whoever

  1403. disregards this disregards

1404. not man but God who

  1405. gave his Holy Spirit.

  1406. Wow.

  1407. Someone summarize this

  1408. for me.

  1409. What is...

  1410. Who's interested in

  1411. your sanctification?

  1412. Obvious answer?

  1413. God is.

  1414. How interested is God

  1415. in your sanctification?

1416. Like what will God do

1417. if you don't care about

  1418. sanctification?

  1419. Is he personally vested

  1420. in this?

  1421. You better believe it.

1422. What does he promise to

1423. do for those who are

  1424. like, eh, you know,

  1425. it's not that important.

  1426. What's the word there?

  1427. An avenger.

  1428. God is personally

  1429. going to take matters

  1430. into his hands.

1431. If you are not willing

  1432. to do it yourself.

1433. Boy, God help me not to

1434. be in the crosshairs of

  1435. your vengeance.

1436. Help me to take this

  1437. seriously.

1438. Help me to understand the

  1439. significance of holiness.

  1440. holiness.

  1441. And again, holiness,

  1442. this is, I think,

  1443. fundamentally our problem.

  1444. Holiness doesn't start

  1445. with sexual immorality.

  1446. That's where you're

  1447. beginning to cross

  1448. the finish line

1449. of that James 1 process.

1450. It starts way back here

  1451. with a complaining heart.

  1452. with a critical heart.

  1453. With an ungrateful heart.

  1454. With a, I deserve this

  1455. kind of heart.

  1456. And this is okay

  1457. kind of heart.

1458. An excusing kind of heart.

  1459. It starts there,

  1460. not here.

  1461. You understand?

  1462. That's our problem.

  1463. Our problem is we're

  1464. addressing issues

  1465. after we've walked

1466. down the road so far

  1467. that we're kind of

  1468. already at the place

  1469. of that final process

  1470. in James where sin

1471. has finally had its way

1472. and it's leading to death.

  1473. You're on death's door.

1474. And so you need to back up

1475. and come to the place

  1476. of recognizing,

  1477. no, wait a second.

  1478. It started much earlier

1479. than that and there are

  1480. a lot of things I need

1481. to begin to work on

1482. in my life so I can be holy

1483. and then, by God's grace,

  1484. this will never be

  1485. an issue for me.

  1486. Understanding the significance

  1487. of holiness.

  1488. Next, kill sin.

  1489. Kill sin.

1490. Every time we succumb to sin,

  1491. we are performing

  1492. acts of worship.

  1493. Let me read that

  1494. one more time.

1495. Every time we succumb to sin,

  1496. we are performing

  1497. acts of worship.

  1498. You are saying,

1499. I worship this, not God.

  1500. That's, we understand

  1501. how serious that is.

  1502. It's idolatry.

1503. It's so easy to excuse

  1504. though, isn't it?

  1505. And thus we become

  1506. a devoted idolater.

  1507. Nearly refusing yourself

  1508. these pleasures

1509. will never purify your lust

1510. because self has not died.

1511. But when you truly die to self

1512. and to the elemental spirits

  1513. of the world,

  1514. Paul affirms that

1515. this is the right kind

  1516. of death.

  1517. For you have died,

  1518. he says,

1519. and your life is hidden

  1520. with Christ in God.

  1521. Mere behavioral modification

  1522. and strict self-discipline

  1523. without a death experience

  1524. will never bring

  1525. complete purification.

  1526. Kill your sin.

  1527. Do not let even

  1528. the roots survive.

  1529. Pull it out.

  1530. Sin must be confronted

  1531. aggressively,

  1532. not managed cautiously.

  1533. Well,

  1534. I'm not gonna,

  1535. I'm gonna avoid

  1536. this kind of sin

  1537. because I know

  1538. this is wrong.

1539. But this kind of sin,

  1540. you know,

  1541. it's okay.

  1542. Don't manage sin.

  1543. Partial obedience

  1544. leaves sin alive.

  1545. Next,

  1546. enliven righteousness.

  1547. And here's the beauty

  1548. of God's strategy.

  1549. There's a both and,

  1550. not an either or.

  1551. Because the Lord knows

  1552. that when we just

  1553. remove certain things,

  1554. it leaves a vacuum

  1555. in its place.

  1556. When we just remove

  1557. certain things,

  1558. then we're left to,

  1559. okay,

  1560. so what happens next?

  1561. And that's what Jesus

  1562. kind of describes

  1563. when that man

  1564. with the demons,

  1565. was healed,

  1566. right?

  1567. And then the demons

  1568. come back

  1569. and he brings more

  1570. because the place

  1571. has been swept

  1572. and it's clean

  1573. and you know

  1574. what I'm talking about?

1575. And this is the same

  1576. kind of issue,

  1577. right?

1578. So we clean our lives

1579. up for a little while

  1580. and we just can't

  1581. do it anymore

  1582. because what we've

  1583. been counting on

  1584. and relying on

  1585. are the self-help

  1586. behavioral modifications

  1587. of kind of just

  1588. not doing this

  1589. over here

  1590. but it's never

  1591. replaced

  1592. by new good habits.

  1593. And that's the strategy

  1594. that God invites us

  1595. to enjoy.

  1596. Colossians 3, 5,

  1597. put to death

1598. what is earthly in you

  1599. but it doesn't

  1600. stop there.

  1601. Put on,

  1602. verse 12,

1603. then as God's chosen ones,

  1604. compassionate hearts,

  1605. kindness,

  1606. humility,

  1607. meekness,

  1608. patience,

  1609. bearing with one another

  1610. and forgiving each other.

  1611. There's this

  1612. beautiful strategy

  1613. of replacing

  1614. those sinful tendencies

  1615. with godly ones.

  1616. Building new grooves,

  1617. new patterns,

  1618. new impulses.

  1619. Now the impulse

  1620. is to do

  1621. what is good

  1622. and the more

  1623. you are involved

  1624. in doing the things

  1625. that please God,

  1626. the more

  1627. it invites

  1628. your heart

  1629. to experience

  1630. the benefits

  1631. of that

  1632. and to want

  1633. that more

  1634. instead of wanting

  1635. the sin.

  1636. Strategy number three,

  1637. do not trust

  1638. the weather vane

  1639. of your feelings.

  1640. And that's

  1641. what we talked about

  1642. the first week,

  1643. remember?

  1644. See,

  1645. feelings are

  1646. meant to be

  1647. tools for you.

  1648. They're meant to be

  1649. tools to address

  1650. or help to awaken

  1651. or to see

  1652. this awareness

  1653. of who you are

  1654. and to then

  1655. drive you

  1656. to dependence

  1657. on the Lord.

  1658. That's what our

1659. feelings are meant to do.

1660. And we all know this,

  1661. that feelings change

  1662. quickly

  1663. and cannot serve

  1664. as reliable guides.

  1665. Some of you

  1666. are more steady

  1667. than others,

  1668. okay?

  1669. But, you know,

  1670. I thought I was

  1671. a pretty steady guy.

  1672. I thought,

  1673. you know,

  1674. I'm not very emotional.

  1675. I don't cry.

  1676. Well,

  1677. that's not

  1678. the only kind

  1679. of emotion

  1680. that God talks about.

  1681. There's emotional,

  1682. emotion of anger

1683. and even as a kid,

  1684. anger,

  1685. that emotion

  1686. was

  1687. so impulsive

  1688. and it was like

  1689. trigger ready,

  1690. okay?

  1691. That's also an emotion

  1692. by the way.

  1693. And so I was

  1694. a pretty emotional guy

  1695. but didn't think

  1696. I was.

  1697. Our emotions

  1698. serve as very

  1699. poor guides

  1700. to life.

  1701. Feelings are

  1702. indicators,

  1703. they're not

  1704. authorities.

  1705. You don't have

  1706. to believe

  1707. that your feelings

  1708. must be obeyed.

  1709. And here's how

  1710. David does this.

  1711. What is his strategy?

  1712. I love this.

  1713. Psalm 56,

  1714. 3 and 4.

  1715. When I am afraid,

  1716. I will what?

  1717. I will trust

  1718. in you.

  1719. In God,

  1720. whose word I praise,

  1721. in God I trust.

  1722. I will not

  1723. be afraid.

  1724. What can man

  1725. do to me?

  1726. I love that.

  1727. Psalm 112,

  1728. 7.

  1729. He is not afraid

  1730. of bad news.

  1731. His heart is firm,

  1732. trusting the Lord.

  1733. I will not

  1734. let my feelings

  1735. have the best

  1736. of me,

  1737. have their way.

  1738. Feelings of hopelessness.

  1739. Believing feelings

  1740. over God

  1741. always results

  1742. in trouble.

  1743. I love that.

  1744. Despair often

  1745. follows repeated

  1746. failures,

  1747. but it does not

  1748. define reality.

  1749. And in this process

  1750. of growing in Christ,

  1751. we're going to

  1752. continue to discover

  1753. how broken we are.

  1754. That's okay.

  1755. Because where sin

  1756. abounds,

  1757. grace abounds

  1758. even more.

  1759. What a blessing

  1760. that is to us.

  1761. But it's not

  1762. now a license

  1763. for us to continue

  1764. to sin.

  1765. Or to feel

  1766. the sense of hopelessness

  1767. when I'm like,

  1768. I just can't seem

  1769. to find victory.

  1770. Well, God has answers

  1771. and I'm going to

  1772. trust Him

  1773. for those answers.

  1774. So past sin

  1775. does not negate

  1776. present grace.

  1777. God's grace

  1778. is there.

  1779. It's present.

  1780. It's available.

  1781. It's ready

  1782. to meet you.

  1783. Again,

  1784. Psalm 27,

    Psalms 27:13

  1785. verse 13.

  1786. These are a couple

  1787. of my favorite

  1788. verses in the Bible.

  1789. I would have lost

  1790. heart unless I had

  1791. believed that I

  1792. would see the

  1793. goodness of the

  1794. Lord in the land

  1795. of the living.

1796. So then what do we

  1797. do?

  1798. You wait on the

  1799. Lord.

  1800. You be of good

  1801. courage.

  1802. Wait, I say,

  1803. on the Lord.

  1804. He settled his

  1805. heart on the truth

  1806. of who God was.

  1807. And regardless

  1808. of what was

  1809. taking place

  1810. around him,

  1811. he was steady.

  1812. Man, I want that.

  1813. I want that

  1814. steadiness.

  1815. I don't want to

  1816. be tossed about

  1817. my feelings

  1818. becoming now

  1819. the thing

  1820. that I have

  1821. to obey,

  1822. the authorities

  1823. in my life.

  1824. Number four,

  1825. strategy four,

  1826. be vigilant

  1827. about occasions

  1828. of temptation.

  1829. Temptation is

  1830. strongest when

  1831. opportunity meets

  1832. vulnerability.

  1833. wisdom recognizes

  1834. patterns,

  1835. environments,

  1836. and situations

  1837. that consistently

  1838. weaken resolve.

  1839. Come to a place

  1840. of knowing and

  1841. seeing.

  1842. Become aware

  1843. of the patterns

  1844. where you are

  1845. most vulnerable.

  1846. Those relationships

  1847. that often lead

  1848. you into sin,

  1849. those places

  1850. that lead you

  1851. into sin,

  1852. those private

  1853. occurrences

  1854. where you are

  1855. and knowing

  1856. I often

  1857. fall here,

  1858. I need to

  1859. find a solution.

  1860. I need to

  1861. run.

  1862. And I love

  1863. how Paul puts

  1864. it.

  1865. He doesn't say

  1866. stand up

  1867. against sinful

  1868. lust.

  1869. He says flee

  1870. sinful lust.

  1871. We often have to,

  1872. that's the best

  1873. strategy.

  1874. That's the strategy

  1875. we need to

  1876. employ most

  1877. often,

  1878. I think.

  1879. Fleeing

  1880. youthful lust.

  1881. Finally,

  1882. sorry we've

  1883. gone so quickly.

  1884. There's so much

  1885. here.

  1886. Man,

  1887. there's so much

  1888. I wanted to

  1889. cover,

  1890. but I'm

  1891. already taking

  1892. you too long.

  1893. Finally,

  1894. learn to

  1895. trust the

  1896. Bible,

  1897. the Bible

  1898. teaching church.

  1899. God has

  1900. graciously

  1901. given us

  1902. one another.

  1903. You are a

  1904. gift to me.

  1905. You are a

  1906. gift to one

  1907. another.

  1908. I am a

  1909. gift to you.

  1910. And God has

  1911. put us

  1912. together.

  1913. And as we

  1914. try to

  1915. conquer sin,

  1916. we're going to

  1917. find most

  1918. often that when

  1919. we isolate

  1920. ourselves,

  1921. then we become

  1922. vulnerable.

  1923. We open

  1924. ourselves up to

  1925. danger.

  1926. That is when

  1927. times are most

  1928. perilous.

  1929. And that's what

  1930. Satan wants to

  1931. do the most.

  1932. He wants to

  1933. separate you,

  1934. to isolate

  1935. you,

  1936. to make you

  1937. feel one way

  1938. or the other

  1939. either you're

  1940. strong enough

  1941. or that you're

  1942. too weak and

  1943. it's not worth

  1944. the effort.

  1945. One of those

  1946. two extremes.

  1947. He wants to

  1948. get you on

  1949. your own.

  1950. But God,

  1951. by his grace,

  1952. has given us

  1953. the church.

  1954. The church is

  1955. part of the

  1956. gracious provision

  1957. of God for

  1958. every Christian

  1959. who is struggling

  1960. with debilitating

  1961. sin.

  1962. It provides

  1963. positive examples

  1964. to follow as

  1965. well as

  1966. authoritative,

  1967. loving,

  1968. accountability.

  1969. God's gracious

  1970. gift to you

  1971. is his people,

  1972. the church.

  1973. And the more

  1974. we understand

  1975. that,

  1976. the more we'll

  1977. enjoy the

  1978. benefits of

  1979. freedom from

  1980. sin and the

  1981. grace that God

  1982. has given to

  1983. us.

  1984. It is a

  1985. gracious thing

  1986. that God has

  1987. given us,

  1988. his people.

  1989. Isolation

  1990. weakens

  1991. spiritual resistance,

  1992. but fellowship

  1993. strengthens it.

  1994. Sin thrives

  1995. in secrecy.

  1996. Don't forget

  1997. that.

  1998. Sin thrives

  1999. in secrecy.

  2000. Holiness

  2001. flourishes

  2002. in the light.

  2003. Let's be those

  2004. who walk in

  2005. the light

  2006. as he is

  2007. in the light.

  2008. And what does

  2009. it do?

  2010. Well,

  2011. John says in

  2012. 1 John 1,

  2013. then we have

  2014. fellowship with

  2015. one another.

  2016. That's what it

  2017. does.

  2018. Walking in the

  2019. light brings

  2020. us together

  2021. that we can

  2022. continue to

  2023. enjoy the

  2024. benefits of

  2025. light and

  2026. fellowship and

  2027. freedom and

  2028. victory over

  2029. sin.

  2030. That's the

  2031. strategy.

  2032. But it's one

  2033. of several.

  2034. And so I

  2035. want to dismiss

  2036. you to be able

  2037. to talk about

  2038. this again.

  2039. We have some

  2040. smaller groups

  2041. today.

  2042. Men will be

  2043. back in the

  2044. education wing

  2045. first floor.

  2046. Women over in

  2047. kind of the

  2048. NPR area.

  2049. And I think

  2050. the questions

  2051. are neutral

  2052. enough so

  2053. that teens

  2054. can be a

  2055. part of this

  2056. too.

  2057. But if you

  2058. have a teen

  2059. in your group

  2060. just be

  2061. sensitive to

  2062. the conversations

  2063. that you have.

  2064. Alright?

  2065. Thanks.

  2066. God bless you.
