  1. I would encourage you to open up your Bibles, if you would please, to Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Everywhere Jesus seemed to go, there were crowds that were in tow.

  4. This excitement, this movement that was taking place.

  5. And so when Jesus arrives in Jerusalem, that final week of His public ministry before the cross,

  6. the disciples and everyone there who was present in seeing Christ's ministry teaching daily in the temple,

  7. day by day He was there, and the crowds were hanging on every word,

  8. there was this expectation that this was the moment.

  9. Certainly this is what God had promised through the prophets so long ago.

  10. The Messiah was here, and the evidence of that seemed to be so prominent in front of them.

  11. And yet, now we turn the page to Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  12. and we see now what was such electric crowds and momentum that seemed to be taking place.

  13. The energy of Christ in the movement that was happening now seems to be a distant memory.

  14. It's a reminder to us this morning that most of life's changing moments don't start in stadiums.

  15. They begin in waiting rooms.

  16. Stadiums feel powerful.

  17. They feel full of energy.

  18. There's momentum.

  19. There's excitement.

  20. There's something happening.

  21. But in Jesus' ministry, people, while they were everywhere,

  22. were going to see that now was a moment,

  23. a moment that was taking place

  24. when God would begin to change the hearts of people,

  25. but He would do it in a way that was silent.

  26. God was about to do something that would change everything.

  27. And He often does that through times of quietness and solitude.

  28. Things that were ordinary.

  29. Away from the action.

  30. Away from the noise.

  31. Think of Noah and 120 years of waiting for the flood.

  32. Think of Abraham and the 25 years that he waited

  33. and patiently waiting for God to give him the promise of a son.

  34. Think of Moses in the 40 years of waiting in the backside of a desert in Midian,

  35. waiting for God to accomplish His purposes in delivering His people.

  36. Or think of David and his patient waiting

  37. from the time that he had been anointed king

  38. to the time that God finally brought him out into the forefront

  39. and established him as king over Israel.

  40. You see, the waiting room is the time, I believe,

  41. God delights most in accomplishing or beginning,

  42. initiating His purposes in the hearts of His people.

  43. And so that's where we find this work beginning.

  44. In Acts chapter 1, verse 4,

    Acts 1:4

  45. Jesus ordered His disciples, remember,

  46. He remembers that He ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem,

  47. but to wait, to wait in Jerusalem for the power of the Spirit to come.

  48. Here we are in Acts.

  49. We're back in the waiting room.

  50. Waiting rooms are strange places, aren't they?

  51. They're a mix or a mingle of joy and sometimes a mix of sorrow.

  52. Waiting rooms aren't always the place where you would expect to be

  53. or even hope to be.

  54. My guess is that most of you have been in a waiting room at some point or the other.

  55. On six occasions through the years,

  56. my wife and I have been in a waiting room

  57. as we waited expectantly for the birth of a child,

  58. a son or a daughter.

  59. Those joyous occasions,

  60. excitement,

  61. maybe even worship and praise to the Lord for His provision for you.

  62. There may be trembling,

  63. there may be pain,

  64. but it's all followed by delight

  65. as in that waiting room you get to see

  66. and hold that precious little child.

  67. In all of this,

  68. there's this real,

  69. even unspoken,

  70. understanding and awareness

  71. that I can't control this.

  72. I can't speed this up.

  73. I can't determine the outcome.

  74. I can only wait

  75. and trust

  76. and pray.

  77. That's what God wants to accomplish

  78. in the waiting rooms

  79. to drive us to a place of dependence

  80. on Him.

  81. Well, many of you know

  82. this has also been

  83. a year of waiting rooms

  84. for our family.

  85. A different kind of waiting,

  86. as it were,

  87. as I've kind of gone through

  88. the waiting rooms

  89. of a heart surgery

  90. and the waiting room

  91. of an eye surgery

  92. and the waiting room

  93. of a stroke

  94. and trying to decide

  95. or figure out

  96. what was taking place.

  97. It was a different kind

  98. of waiting room,

  99. but accomplished

  100. and was oriented

  101. towards the same kind of purpose.

  102. I can't control this.

  103. I can't determine

  104. the outcome of this.

  105. I can't speed this up.

  106. I can't slow this down.

  107. I can only wait

  108. and trust

  109. and pray.

  110. You see,

  111. waiting rooms

  112. strip away

  113. the illusion

  114. of control,

  115. don't they?

  116. And they strip away

  117. the illusion

  118. of strength

  119. and they seek

  120. to push us

  121. into dependence

  122. on God

  123. where confidence

  124. alone can come.

  125. They teach us

  126. dependence.

  127. They confront

  128. our limitations.

  129. And in their own way,

  130. they invite us back

  131. to simple posture

  132. of faith.

  133. Lord,

  134. if you don't act,

  135. nothing will happen.

  136. Now imagine,

  137. here we are

  138. in Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1:14

  139. verse 14,

  140. another waiting room.

  141. A waiting room

  142. that God delights

  143. in driving home

  144. those messages

  145. of his power

  146. and the dependence

  147. of his people

  148. that they need

  149. to be on him.

  150. The crowds are gone.

  151. Jesus has ascended.

  152. The mission

  153. in front of these

  154. disciples

  155. is massive.

  156. Go to the uttermost

  157. parts of the world.

  158. How will they accomplish

  159. this?

  160. Will they accomplish

  161. this in the waiting room?

  162. That's where it will begin.

  163. They need to unite

  164. under the banner

  165. of God's power

  166. in his plan

  167. in order to enjoy

  168. the benefits

  169. of God's work

  170. in their life.

  171. We saw that

  172. last week

  173. that there was

  174. obedience,

  175. simple obedience

  176. to the instructions

  177. of God

  178. that would begin

  179. to activate

  180. God's purposes

  181. in their life.

  182. Simple,

  183. clear instructions.

  184. Go back to Jerusalem.

  185. Wait to the coming

  186. of the Holy Spirit.

  187. I think all of us

  188. could do that

  189. and yet we see

  190. this mission

  191. in front of us

  192. and we think,

  193. how are we going

  194. to accomplish

  195. the mission?

  196. Well,

  197. we simply need

  198. to obey

  199. the instructions

  200. that are in front of us

  201. and let God

  202. accomplish

  203. his purposes,

  204. his mission.

  205. What if God

  206. loves to start

  207. his greatest work

  208. in the waiting room?

  209. As you're waiting

  210. for him

  211. to initiate

  212. his plan.

  213. As you're coupling

  214. your heart

  215. to the unity

  216. and purpose

  217. that he has set

  218. before you.

  219. As you are learning

  220. to depend upon

  221. the Spirit

  222. for his power.

  223. What if the most

  224. powerful thing

  225. a church can do

  226. is not to rush

  227. ahead

  228. but is to wait

  229. to gather

  230. and to pray?

  231. What if the Spirit's

  232. power is not released

  233. through hype

  234. and hoopla,

  235. through energy,

  236. through movements,

  237. great movements

  238. but it's unleashed

  239. to us through

  240. the simple,

  241. unified,

  242. humble

  243. expectancy?

  244. That's what we're

  245. going to see

  246. this morning

  247. as we unpack

  248. Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1:14

  249. verse 14

  250. and we see

  251. how God begins

  252. to do this

  253. in hearts.

  254. The hearts

  255. of 120,

  256. this meager group,

  257. this small gathering,

  258. the thousands

  259. that had been there

  260. are now reduced

  261. to 120.

  262. Here they are.

  263. And we find

  264. through this

  265. that God does

  266. his greatest work

  267. through a unified

  268. people.

  269. That's our

  270. first point

  271. this morning.

  272. God does

  273. his greatest

  274. work

  275. through

  276. a unified

  277. people.

  278. Notice this,

  279. Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1:12–14

  280. verses 12 to 14

  281. says this,

  282. Then they returned

  283. to Jerusalem

  284. from the

  285. Mount Colt

  286. Olivet,

  287. which is near

  288. Jerusalem,

  289. a Sabbath day's

  290. journey away.

  291. And when they

  292. had entered,

  293. they went up

  294. to the upper room

  295. where they were

  296. staying,

  297. Peter and John

  298. and James

  299. and Andrew,

  300. Philip and Thomas,

  301. Bartholomew and Matthew,

  302. James the son of

  303. Alphaeus,

  304. and Simon the

  305. zealot,

  306. and Judas the son

  307. of James.

  308. And here it is.

  309. All these,

  310. with one accord,

  311. were devoting

  312. themselves to

  313. prayer together

  314. with the women

  315. and Mary,

  316. the mother of

  317. Jesus,

  318. and his brothers.

  319. God does

  320. his greatest work

  321. through a unified

  322. people.

  323. And here we see,

  324. first of all,

  325. the picture of

  326. their oneness.

  327. Notice their

  328. oneness.

  329. It's represented

  330. for us in a

  331. number of different

  332. ways here.

  333. In this short

  334. verse,

  335. the picture

  336. of their

  337. oneness

  338. is captured

  339. for us

  340. in the words

  341. of Luke.

  342. We move

  343. through this

  344. book and we

  345. see one of

  346. the central

  347. realities of

  348. a church

  349. that will

  350. enjoy the

  351. benefits of

  352. the Lord

  353. and that is

  354. this,

  355. this predominance

  356. of unity.

  357. We'll see it

  358. time and time

  359. and time again

  360. as we work

  361. our way through

  362. this little

  363. book.

  364. It's the

  365. preeminent

  366. feature of

  367. this gathering.

  368. They're gathering

  369. and they're

  370. unified.

  371. Notice the

  372. words that Luke

  373. uses in these

  374. verses.

  375. They returned.

  376. They entered.

  377. They went up.

  378. They were staying.

  379. All these with

  380. one accord

  381. were devoting

  382. themselves to

  383. prayer together

  384. with the women

  385. and Mary,

  386. the mother of

  387. Jesus.

  388. Luke labors

  389. in these short

  390. verses to draw

  391. out and

  392. emphasize the

  393. oneness in

  394. the community

  395. of this

  396. gathering.

  397. How many

  398. times does he

  399. have to

  400. emphasize the

  401. togetherness?

  402. You see,

  403. he begins with

  404. all these

  405. with one

  406. accord.

  407. What a

  408. beautiful word

  409. this little

  410. word all

  411. is.

  412. Simple and

  413. beautiful.

  414. Every,

  415. it really is

  416. the simple

  417. meaning,

  418. every,

  419. describing the

  420. totality and

  421. the wholeness

  422. of this

  423. group.

  424. No one

  425. was missing.

  426. It's especially

  427. important given

  428. the fact that

  429. this was such a

  430. meager group,

  431. such a small

  432. group.

  433. Given the

  434. enormity of

  435. the massive

  436. size of the

  437. crowds and

  438. Luke begins

  439. with all.

  440. All are

  441. together.

  442. As with the

  443. disciples,

  444. this group is

  445. here in the

  446. upper room.

  447. And a

  448. movement that

  449. had consistently

  450. numbered in the

  451. thousands was

  452. now reduced to

  453. 120.

  454. But Luke wants

  455. us to know

  456. they're all

  457. here.

  458. The group is

  459. complete,

  460. at least for

  461. now.

  462. And God's

  463. purposes have

  464. not failed.

  465. Everyone that

  466. God needs to

  467. activate his

  468. purposes is

  469. present for

  470. this work.

  471. No one is

  472. missing.

  473. There's a group

  474. that God is

  475. going to use to

  476. launch the

  477. church age and

  478. they're all

  479. present and

  480. accounted for.

  481. Notice they

  482. gather with one

  483. accord and this

  484. also signifies

  485. this unified

  486. heart.

  487. They belong

  488. together.

  489. They're not

  490. fractured.

  491. This Greek word

  492. is a compound

  493. word which

  494. essentially means

  495. one and the

  496. same, is the

  497. first piece,

  498. and thumos

  499. which is

  500. temperament or

  501. mind.

  502. They all had

  503. the same

  504. spirit, the

  505. same mind,

  506. the same

  507. purpose.

  508. They all had

  509. the same

  510. heart.

  511. One of the

  512. prevailing

  513. features of

  514. this movement,

  515. this one

  516. accord,

  517. purpose that

  518. is seen

  519. throughout the

  520. book of

  521. Acts.

  522. This heavy

  523. emphasis, 11

  524. times this

  525. word one

  526. accord is

  527. used throughout

  528. the New

  529. Testament and

  530. ten of those

  531. times find

  532. their way in

  533. the book of

  534. Acts.

  535. We see it

  536. here in Acts

    Acts 1:14

  537. chapter 1

  538. verse 14.

  539. We see it in

  540. Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2:1

  541. verse 1.

  542. When the

  543. day of

  544. Pentecost

  545. had come,

  546. they were

  547. all in

  548. one accord

  549. in one

  550. place.

  551. In chapter

  552. 2 verse 46

  553. it says,

  554. So continuing

  555. daily with

  556. one accord

  557. in the

  558. temple breaking

  559. bread.

  560. In chapter 4

  561. verse 24,

  562. So when they

  563. heard, they

  564. raised their

  565. voice to God

  566. with one

  567. accord and

  568. said.

  569. In chapter

  570. 5 verse 12,

  571. And through

  572. the hands of

  573. the apostles,

  574. many signs and

  575. wonders were

  576. done among the

  577. people, and

  578. they were all

  579. with one accord

  580. on Solomon's

  581. porch.

  582. The togetherness,

  583. the unity, the

  584. one heart, one

  585. spirit, one

  586. mind, one

  587. purpose, propelling

  588. them as a

  589. collective group

  590. into the mission

  591. that God had

  592. called them to

  593. be.

  594. They're also

  595. together.

  596. Notice that

  597. word, this

  598. simple Greek

  599. word which is

  600. the word

  601. sun, which is

  602. the word

  603. with.

  604. With or

  605. together.

  606. A group of

  607. incredible

  608. diversity, men

  609. and women,

  610. undoubtedly

  611. young and

  612. old, fishermen

  613. and zealots,

  614. wealthy and

  615. poor, different

  616. experiences, different

  617. backgrounds, different

  618. economic status, and

  619. here they are, all

  620. together, all

  621. represented.

  622. Next we see the

  623. purpose of their

  624. oneness.

  625. The purpose of

  626. their oneness.

  627. You see, Christ had

  628. given the eleven

  629. apostles some very

  630. clear commands, and

  631. he had told them

  632. precisely what they

  633. were meant to do

  634. when they went

  635. back to Jerusalem.

  636. Acts 1, 1 and 2,

  637. in the first book,

  638. O Theophilus, I

  639. have dealt with all

  640. the things that

  641. Jesus began to

  642. teach until the

  643. day when he was

  644. taken up after he

  645. had given commands

  646. through the Holy

  647. Spirit to the

  648. apostles whom he

  649. had chosen.

  650. Notice, commands to

  651. the eleven

  652. apostles.

  653. What were they to

  654. do?

  655. Well, verses 4 and

  656. 5, we've already

  657. read this a couple

  658. of times.

  659. They're to wait in

  660. Jerusalem until

  661. they receive power.

  662. That's what they

  663. were to do.

  664. And they were

  665. given a clear

  666. promise in Acts

    Acts 1:8

  667. chapter 1, verse

  668. 8.

  669. You will receive

  670. power when the

  671. Holy Spirit has

  672. come upon you.

  673. You will be my

  674. witnesses in

  675. Jerusalem and

  676. Judea and Samaria

  677. and to the ends

  678. of the earth.

  679. You will be

  680. witnesses.

  681. You will receive

  682. power.

  683. In this chapter,

  684. the apostles are

  685. promised power.

  686. They're promised

  687. to be witnesses.

  688. And as we kind

  689. of look back for a

  690. moment to the

  691. gospel records,

  692. even in the time

  693. right after the

  694. resurrection to the

  695. time of the

  696. ascension, those

  697. same kinds of

  698. commands were given

  699. to the eleven.

  700. In Matthew

    Matthew 28:16

  701. chapter 28, verse

  702. 16, now the eleven

  703. disciples went to

  704. Galilee, to the

  705. mountain which Jesus

  706. had directed them,

  707. and what comes next

  708. is this great

  709. commission promise.

  710. You're going to be

  711. witnesses.

  712. Go, make disciples

  713. of all nations.

  714. I'm going to give

  715. you power.

  716. My power is going

  717. to go before you.

  718. I'm going to give

  719. you all authority

  720. because I'm going

  721. to be with you.

  722. In Luke chapter

    Luke 24:44–49

  723. 24, verses 44

  724. to 49, this is

  725. the moment in

  726. the upper room.

  727. Again, Jesus is

  728. just with the eleven.

  729. 24, verses 48

  730. and 49.

  731. You are witnesses

  732. of these things,

  733. and behold, I am

  734. sending the promise

  735. of my Father upon

  736. you, but stay in

  737. the city until you

  738. are clothed with

  739. power from on

  740. high.

  741. In John's account,

  742. it's much the same

  743. thing.

  744. John chapter 21,

    John 21:19–22

  745. verses 19 to 22.

  746. On the evening

  747. of that day,

  748. the first day

  749. of the week,

  750. this is the time

  751. of the resurrection,

  752. the doors were

  753. locked, the disciples

  754. gather, and Jesus

  755. says, peace be with

  756. you.

  757. Verse 20, when he

  758. had said this, he

  759. showed them his

  760. hands and his side,

  761. and the disciples

  762. were glad.

  763. Verse 21, he says

  764. to them again,

  765. peace be with you.

  766. As the Father has

  767. sent me, so I am

  768. sending you.

  769. And when he had

  770. said this, he

  771. breathed on them

  772. and said to them,

  773. receive the Spirit.

  774. This was a symbolic

  775. gesture.

  776. This is something

  777. that was coming.

  778. This is something

  779. they could expect.

  780. In John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  781. 26, Jesus helps

  782. the disciples to

  783. understand that the

  784. Spirit is going to

  785. come.

  786. The helper, the Holy

  787. Spirit, whom the

  788. Father will send in my

  789. name, he will teach

  790. you all things and

  791. bring to your

  792. remembrance all that

  793. I have said to you.

  794. Peace I leave with

  795. you.

  796. My peace I give to

  797. you.

  798. Not as the world

  799. gives to you do I

  800. give to you.

  801. Let not your heart be

  802. troubled, neither let

  803. them be afraid.

  804. And so, here we are

  805. again in the upper

  806. room and Jesus says,

  807. peace be to you.

  808. It would have been a

  809. flash of recollection

  810. of what had happened

  811. just a couple of days

  812. before where Jesus is

  813. seeing them on the

  814. night before he's

  815. crucified.

  816. This promise of the

  817. Spirit.

  818. It's striking that in

  819. every example that we

  820. find, these direct

  821. promises of God's

  822. power coming on the

  823. people is to the

  824. eleven.

  825. So why are the

  826. hundred and twenty

  827. here?

  828. Why are they gathered?

  829. The promises are to

  830. the apostles.

  831. Well, there have been

  832. indications that God's

  833. power would be given

  834. to them as well.

  835. In the ministry of

  836. John the Baptist, in

  837. Luke chapter 3, verse

    Luke 3:16

  838. 16, John says, he will

  839. baptize you with the

  840. Holy Spirit and fire.

  841. And then in Luke, as

  842. Jesus is talking about

  843. the need for the eleven

  844. apostles to pray, he

  845. says, ask and I, or

  846. excuse me, I tell you,

  847. ask and it will be

  848. given to you.

  849. Seek and you will find.

  850. Knock and it will be

  851. opened to you.

  852. If you then who are

  853. evil know how to give

  854. good gifts to your

  855. children, how much

  856. more will the

  857. heavenly Father give

  858. the Holy Spirit to

  859. those who ask?

  860. Ask.

  861. Again, another

  862. indication that when

  863. we pray and ask that

  864. a benefit of that will

  865. be the blessing of the

  866. Spirit.

  867. And of course, this new

  868. covenant community, this

  869. new covenant expectation

  870. in Ezekiel 36 about the

  871. Spirit who's coming.

  872. But while there are

  873. indications of a larger

  874. work, the specific

  875. command that Jesus has

  876. given in the time of his

  877. resurrection and the time

  878. of his ascension are

  879. specifically given to the

  880. apostles.

  881. So why are the 120 here?

  882. I think this is really

  883. significant.

  884. Because I think the

  885. disciples, the apostles,

  886. knew the promise.

  887. But they believed that

  888. that promise was going to

  889. be carried out to the

  890. apostles alone.

  891. So why are they here?

  892. Well, they're here because

  893. they knew that God is

  894. about to do something and

  895. they're supporting the

  896. work of God even though

  897. as far as they're concerned

  898. they're not going to be

  899. immediate beneficiaries.

  900. They knew that God in

  901. some way would send power

  902. on the apostles and that

  903. this work would break

  904. forth and it would break

  905. into the uttermost parts

  906. of the earth.

  907. But I'm inclined to think

  908. that as they gathered,

  909. they did not understand the

  910. extent of God's promise to

  911. the apostles.

  912. They had no idea that they

  913. also would be beneficiaries.

  914. Because this gathering was

  915. not about what's in it for

  916. me but what is God about

  917. to do?

  918. I want to support the work

  919. of God, whatever that work

  920. is.

  921. So what was God doing?

  922. Well, as they prayed, as a

  923. unified people, they begin

  924. to understand that God's gift

  925. was so much bigger than their

  926. expectations.

  927. God's grace blew away their

  928. categories.

  929. We're going to see this in a

  930. couple of weeks.

  931. That God would exceed their

  932. expectations.

  933. They were faithful.

  934. They expected and knew that

  935. God would work.

  936. But God happened to have

  937. something in mind that they

  938. would also be able to

  939. participate in experiencing

  940. the power of God working

  941. through them as well and not

  942. just through the apostles.

  943. You know, what if obedience

  944. comes before clarity?

  945. It's so easy as we look at

  946. the scriptures.

  947. We kind of look at it with a

  948. hindsight.

  949. We don't expect or even

  950. anticipate that sometimes

  951. these things that God will do

  952. wasn't necessarily what the

  953. people at the time expected.

  954. And yet our obedience to the

  955. Lord needs to be obedience

  956. because we believe his

  957. purposes are best, whether or

  958. not I am a personal

  959. specific beneficiary.

  960. That God's glory is in view.

  961. That God's purposes are my

  962. highest goal.

  963. And so we see that happening

  964. here with this group of 120.

  965. Then we also see the priority

  966. of their oneness.

  967. The priority of their oneness.

  968. This unity of this body was a

  969. clear priority for the Lord.

  970. As we work through the

  971. gospel of John, we see this

  972. upper room, all of these

  973. commands that God gives to

  974. these disciples in this upper

  975. room to strengthen and secure

  976. and help to fan into flame the

  977. unity that they would have.

  978. John 13, 34 and 35, a new

  979. commandment I give to you that

  980. you love one another just as I

  981. have loved you.

  982. You also are to love one

  983. another.

  984. By this all people will know

  985. that you are my disciples if you

  986. have love for one another.

  987. John 15, verse 12.

    John 15:12

  988. This is still this upper room

  989. discourse.

  990. Jesus says, this is my

  991. commandment that you love one

  992. another as I have loved you.

  993. John 15, 17.

  994. These things I command you so that

  995. you will love one another.

  996. And then the high priestly prayer,

  997. John 17, 11.

  998. I'm no longer in the world but

  999. they are in the world and I am

  1000. coming to you.

1001. Holy Father, keep them in your

1002. name which you have given me that

1003. they may be one even as we are

  1004. one.

  1005. And then in John 17, 20 to 23.

1006. I do not ask for these only but

1007. I ask for those who will believe

1008. in me through their word that

1009. they may be one just as you

1010. Father are in me and I in you

1011. that they also may be in us so

1012. that the world may believe that

  1013. you have sent me.

1014. The glory that you have given me

1015. I have given to them that they

1016. may be one even as we are one.

1017. I in them and you in me that

1018. they may become perfectly one so

1019. the world may know that you sent

1020. me and loved them even as you

  1021. loved me.

1022. You get the sense that Jesus

1023. cares a little bit about unity?

1024. You get the sense that Jesus

  1025. cares a lot about God's people

1026. demonstrating not just lip service

1027. to love but true authentic

1028. loyalty to God and devotion to

1029. him by loving the people that

1030. God has put them in community

  1031. with.

1032. As a priority God has gifted the

1033. church with leaders and those

1034. leaders are to strengthen and

  1035. reinforce that unity.

1036. We see that in Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 4:11–13

  1037. 4 verses 11 to 13.

  1038. It says,

1039. And he gave the apostles and

  1040. prophets, the evangelists, the

1041. shepherds, and the teachers to

1042. equip the saints for the work of

1043. ministry for building up the body

1044. of Christ until we all attain the

1045. unity of faith and the knowledge of

1046. the Son of God to the mature manhood

1047. to the measure of the stature of the

  1048. fullness of Christ.

1049. Here is how important unity is.

1050. That God has gifted the church with

  1051. leaders, pastors, teachers to

  1052. strengthen, reinforce, and cultivate

  1053. unity among his people.

1054. He cares about the unity of this

  1055. church.

1056. He cares about the unity of this

  1057. congregation.

1058. And notice this is not the unity of

  1059. the world.

1060. The unity of the world which is to

1061. rally around a common cause or to

1062. fight a common enemy or to demand

1063. conformity by silencing dissent in

1064. some way or to stay peaceful by

  1065. avoiding conflict.

1066. This is not a unity at the expense of

  1067. truth.

1068. This is unity that comes because of

  1069. truth.

  1070. Notice.

1071. God has gifted the church with

1072. leaders and what do they do?

1073. They not just strengthen it, they

  1074. teach it.

1075. They are there to equip the saints for

1076. ministry and it happens as they're

1077. attaining the unity of the faith.

1078. There is a theological doctrinal source

  1079. for their unity.

  1080. This unifying teaching that's

1081. happening by the pastors and

1082. teachers that God has gifted a

  1083. congregation.

  1084. They're strengthened.

  1085. They grow.

  1086. They grow in doctrine.

1087. They grow in knowledge and they

1088. grow in likeness to Christ but they

1089. don't do it in isolation.

1090. They don't do it independently.

1091. They do it because of the gifting of

1092. God to strengthen unity among his

1093. people through the gift of pastors and

  1094. teachers.

  1095. leaders.

1096. It's not an independent venture but a

  1097. collaborative journey.

  1098. We're all moving together because we're

1099. committed to the truth of God's word

  1100. together not independently.

1101. Now we see that God not just works

1102. through a unified people but God does

1103. his greatest work through a praying

  1104. people.

1105. You see that here too.

1106. All these with one accord were devoting

  1107. themselves to prayer.

  1108. Devoting themselves to prayer.

1109. We see this picture of their dependence

  1110. here in verse 14.

  1111. They're waiting in Jerusalem.

1112. It did not mean inactivity.

1113. It did not mean boredom.

1114. It did not mean passivity.

1115. They're not just waiting and twiddling

  1116. their thumbs.

  1117. They're waiting purposefully.

  1118. They're waiting prayerfully.

  1119. They're worshiping.

  1120. They're seeking God.

  1121. They're pursuing.

  1122. They're praying.

  1123. Waiting.

1124. This word for devoting is a present active

1125. participle and all that really means is

1126. that it was a current reality in their

1127. life that was a consistent theme as long

1128. as they were there in Jerusalem.

  1129. Waiting.

  1130. Devoting.

1131. This word devoting occurs ten times

1132. throughout the New Testament and six of

1133. those times happen here in the book of

  1134. Acts.

1135. This was a serious group.

  1136. A devoted group.

  1137. An expectant group.

1138. Time and time again we see that as a quality

  1139. of their personhood.

1140. This unified group devoting themselves to

1141. prayer here in verse 14.

1142. We also see the pattern of their dependence.

1143. Acts chapter 1 verse 14 again devoting

    Acts 1:14

  1144. themselves to prayer.

1145. They were a group that had learned the lesson

  1146. the disciples had missed.

1147. When Jesus says men ought always to pray

  1148. and not lose heart.

1149. Remember that Jesus in the night of his

1150. crucifixion before he's taken away

1151. he's encouraging the disciples watch and

1152. pray that you enter not into temptation.

1153. And here we find a pattern of dependence

1154. that is coming through this group of

  1155. individuals.

1156. And a number of times throughout the book of

1157. Acts where prayer becomes this constant

1158. this constant pattern of life.

1159. I've put a number of those examples in your

  1160. in your outlines.

1161. You see it in Acts chapter 1 verse 24

    Acts 1:24

1162. and they prayed for wisdom concerning

  1163. leadership.

1164. In chapter 2 verse 42 devoting themselves

1165. to teaching and prayer and time and time again.

1166. This posture of prayer is a pattern for this church.

1167. There's no wonder why God used them mightily

1168. because they anchored their hopes.

  1169. They anchored their purposes.

1170. They anchored their activity in the power of God

1171. and not in human effort.

1172. They trusted in him from start to finish.

1173. This word for prayer is a general term

1174. that helps us recognize the significance

1175. of their posture before the Lord.

1176. It was prayer that activated God's promises.

1177. It was prayer that would be the ongoing mark

1178. of their dependence on the Lord.

1179. And finally, we find the purpose of their dependence.

1180. The purpose of their dependence.

1181. Why do they depend on the Lord through prayer?

  1182. What amplified this?

  1183. What motivated this?

  1184. What prompted this?

1185. Well again, if we look back

1186. at the example of our Lord Jesus

1187. and the way that he encouraged his disciples

1188. and he emphasized the significance of prayer

1189. the night before he was crucified,

1190. well, maybe we'll begin to understand

1191. how important this would become

1192. to this new group of individuals

1193. who were meeting together in Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1194. On four occasions, Jesus,

1195. in this short span of this upper room supper

  1196. that they were having,

1197. emphasizes the significance of prayer.

  1198. In John chapter 14, verse 13,

    John 14:13

  1199. Jesus says this,

1200. Whatever you ask in my name,

  1201. this I will do.

1202. That the Father may be glorified in the Son.

1203. If you ask me anything in my name,

  1204. I will do it.

  1205. Are you listening?

1206. Okay, if you're not listening,

1207. disciples, let me say it again.

  1208. John 15, verse 7,

    John 15:7

1209. If you abide with me

1210. and my words abide in you,

  1211. ask whatever you wish,

1212. it will be done for you.

1213. By this, my Father is glorified,

1214. that you bear much fruit

1215. and prove to be my disciples.

  1216. Are you listening?

  1217. Is it clear?

1218. Let me say it again.

  1219. John 15, 16,

  1220. You didn't choose me,

1221. but I chose you and appointed you

1222. that you should go and bear fruit

1223. and that your fruit should abide

1224. so that whatever you ask the Father

  1225. in my name,

1226. He may give it to you.

  1227. Are you listening?

1228. Did you get the message?

  1229. That's three times.

  1230. How about one more?

  1231. John 16, verse 23,

    John 16:23

1232. In that day you will ask

  1233. nothing of me.

1234. Truly, truly I say to you,

1235. whatever you ask the Father

  1236. in my name,

1237. He will give it to you.

1238. Until now you have asked

  1239. nothing in my name.

1240. Ask and you will receive

1241. that your joy may be full.

  1242. Is there any wonder

  1243. why these disciples now

  1244. in returning to Jerusalem

  1245. are praying?

1246. Shouldn't be any wonder at all.

1247. Jesus not only set the example

  1248. of His confidence

1249. in the Father through prayer,

  1250. He helped the disciples

1251. to understand time and time again

  1252. the exact same night.

  1253. Pray to the Lord

1254. for His work to happen.

1255. So what are they praying?

  1256. We understand the purpose.

  1257. They're praying

  1258. because they've been

  1259. instructed to pray.

1260. But what is helping to amplify

1261. and fuel and guide their prayer?

  1262. And again,

1263. we could go and spend

  1264. a lot of time

  1265. working through

  1266. this upper room discourse.

1267. And I have there in your notes,

  1268. I think there are

  1269. ten different things

  1270. that Jesus wants

  1271. and says He wants

  1272. to accomplish in them.

1273. and this would then be

1274. the fuel that they would use

  1275. to know

1276. this is what He wants.

  1277. This is His will.

1278. Then this is what we need to pray.

  1279. For example, humility.

  1280. John chapter 13, verse 14.

    John 13:14

  1281. If then

  1282. your Lord and teacher

  1283. have washed your feet,

1284. you also ought to wash

  1285. one another's feet.

  1286. Be men

  1287. and women

  1288. of humility

  1289. and service.

  1290. So, O Lord,

1291. help us to be humble.

1292. Lord, help us to be willing

  1293. to wash the feet,

  1294. the dirty, stinky feet

1295. of the people around us.

  1296. May we follow

  1297. your lead.

  1298. May we walk

  1299. after your example.

  1300. May we exemplify

  1301. the humility

  1302. of our Savior.

  1303. O Lord,

  1304. please make us humble.

  1305. Or since your love.

  1306. John 13, 34.

  1307. A new commandment

  1308. I give to you

1309. that you love one another

1310. just as I have loved you.

  1311. You are to love

  1312. one another.

1313. By this we'll all know

1314. that you are my disciples

  1315. if you have love

  1316. for one another.

  1317. O Lord,

  1318. please help me love

  1319. this way.

  1320. O God,

  1321. help me to recognize

  1322. the significance

  1323. of the community

1324. that you have put together.

1325. Your work in their life

  1326. because of the beauty

  1327. and the work

  1328. of our Lord

  1329. and Savior Jesus

1330. who has made us one.

  1331. O God,

  1332. please help us

  1333. to be unified

  1334. and full of love

  1335. for our brothers

  1336. and sisters.

  1337. Or,

1338. we pray for the Father

  1339. to be glorified.

  1340. John 14, 13.

  1341. Whatever you ask

  1342. in my name,

  1343. this I will do.

  1344. Why?

  1345. That the Father

  1346. may be glorified

  1347. in the Son.

  1348. O God,

  1349. I want

  1350. the glory of God,

1351. the glory of the Father

  1352. to shine forth,

  1353. to be so clear,

  1354. to be so evident

  1355. in this world.

  1356. O God,

  1357. may you

  1358. make your Son

  1359. glorified

  1360. in this world.

  1361. How about the coming

  1362. of the Spirit?

  1363. John 14, 16-17.

1364. I will ask the Father,

  1365. He will give you

  1366. another helper

1367. to be with you forever,

  1368. even the Spirit

  1369. of truth.

  1370. O Lord,

1371. thank you for your Holy Spirit.

1372. Thank you for the promise

  1373. that you have given

  1374. that everyone

  1375. who comes to faith

  1376. in you

  1377. receives the gift

  1378. of the Spirit.

  1379. You indwell me

  1380. and you empower me

  1381. and you activate

  1382. in my life

  1383. the ability

  1384. to then serve others.

  1385. O Lord,

  1386. may the fruit

  1387. of your Spirit

  1388. be so evident

  1389. in my life.

  1390. O God,

  1391. may your Spirit

  1392. have His way

  1393. in my life.

  1394. How about

  1395. for revelation

  1396. of truth?

  1397. John 14, 26.

  1398. But the helper,

  1399. the Holy Spirit,

  1400. whom the Father

1401. will send in my name,

  1402. He will teach you

  1403. all things

  1404. and bring to your

  1405. remembrance

  1406. all that I

  1407. have said to you.

  1408. Lord,

1409. thank you for your truth.

1410. Thank you for your Spirit

  1411. that makes your truth

  1412. so real in me

  1413. that illuminates

  1414. my heart and mind,

  1415. that makes it clear.

  1416. And when your Word

  1417. is clear,

  1418. O God,

  1419. may I do

  1420. what your Word says.

  1421. Inform my heart

  1422. of the truth

  1423. that you've given.

  1424. Help me

  1425. in the power

  1426. of your Spirit

  1427. to work that out.

  1428. Or peace.

  1429. John 14, 27.

1430. Peace I leave with you.

1431. My peace I give to you.

  1432. Not as the world

  1433. gives,

  1434. give I to you.

  1435. Let not your heart

  1436. be troubled,

  1437. neither let them

  1438. be afraid.

  1439. O Lord,

  1440. I'm so inclined

  1441. to fear.

  1442. I'm so timid

  1443. and afraid.

  1444. I'm not courageous

  1445. as I should be.

  1446. I'm not bold

  1447. as I should be.

  1448. I'm anxious

  1449. about many things.

  1450. O Lord,

  1451. may your Spirit

  1452. help me to enjoy

  1453. peace.

  1454. Peace and courage.

  1455. Or fruitfulness.

  1456. John 15, 4 and 5.

  1457. Abide in me

  1458. and I in you

  1459. as the branch

  1460. cannot bear fruit

  1461. by itself

  1462. unless it abides

  1463. in the vine,

  1464. neither can you

1465. unless you abide in me.

  1466. I am the vine.

  1467. You are the branches.

  1468. Whoever abides in me

  1469. and I in him,

  1470. he it is

  1471. that bears much fruit

  1472. for apart from me

  1473. you can do nothing.

  1474. O Lord,

  1475. please make me fruitful.

  1476. Whatever it takes.

  1477. Understand

  1478. that in order

  1479. to enjoy fruitfulness,

1480. I need to be connected

  1481. to you.

  1482. Connected to the vine.

  1483. And everything

  1484. and anything

  1485. that would sever

  1486. that connection.

  1487. Strengthen

  1488. my grip

  1489. on you

  1490. and help me

  1491. to obliterate

  1492. those things,

  1493. those patterns,

  1494. those sins

  1495. from my life

  1496. so I can enjoy

  1497. the harvest,

  1498. the fruitfulness

  1499. in my life personally

  1500. and super abounding

  1501. for the people

  1502. that you put me

  1503. in community with.

  1504. On and on

  1505. we could go

  1506. for boldness

  1507. in John 15, 26.

  1508. When the Spirit comes

1509. whom I will send to you

  1510. from the Father,

  1511. the Spirit of truth

  1512. who proceeds

  1513. from the Father,

  1514. he will bear witness

  1515. about me

  1516. and you also

  1517. will bear witness

  1518. because you have been

  1519. with me

  1520. from the beginning.

  1521. O God,

  1522. may the witness

  1523. and the testimony

  1524. that is so real

  1525. in my own heart,

1526. may it not be silent,

  1527. a silent witness.

1528. May it be a public,

  1529. bold proclamation

  1530. of who you are

1531. and what you have done.

  1532. The goodness

  1533. of the Lord.

  1534. Finally,

  1535. unity.

  1536. As we read

  1537. in John 17, 20 and 21,

  1538. I do not ask

  1539. for these only

  1540. but for those

  1541. who will believe

1542. in me through their word

1543. that they may be one

  1544. just as you, Father,

  1545. are in me

  1546. and I in you

  1547. that they also

  1548. may be in us

  1549. so the world

  1550. may believe

1551. that you have sent me.

  1552. O God,

  1553. so many things

  1554. are in my way

  1555. keeping me

  1556. from unity

  1557. with others.

  1558. There's bitterness

  1559. in my life

  1560. there's unforgiveness

  1561. in my life,

  1562. there's hurt

  1563. in my life,

  1564. there are people

  1565. who have injured me.

  1566. O God,

1567. I pray that you would

  1568. help me

  1569. to blow those away,

  1570. to lay those

  1571. at your feet,

  1572. to help you do

1573. this work in my life

  1574. so I can enjoy

  1575. the unity

  1576. that you have

  1577. obtained

  1578. on my behalf

  1579. because of the work

  1580. of Christ.

  1581. You have made

  1582. unity possible.

  1583. help me not

  1584. to be so foolish

1585. as to push it away.

1586. Help me to embrace it,

1587. help me to pursue it,

  1588. help me

  1589. to strengthen

  1590. unity

  1591. for the sake

  1592. of witness.

  1593. Notice

  1594. this unity

  1595. in verse 21,

  1596. they may all

  1597. be one

  1598. just as you,

  1599. Father,

  1600. are in me

  1601. and I in you

1602. that they may be one

  1603. so that the world

  1604. may believe

  1605. that you sent me.

  1606. Do you understand

  1607. the significance

  1608. of unity there?

  1609. Our unity

  1610. strengthens

  1611. our witness

  1612. and confirms

  1613. that the gospel

  1614. is true.

  1615. This is a sketch

  1616. perhaps

  1617. of things

  1618. that they prayed for.

  1619. I imagine

1620. there were other things too

  1621. but this was on

  1622. the Savior's heart

  1623. the night before

  1624. he was crucified.

  1625. This was

  1626. what sent him

  1627. to the cross.

  1628. This was his mission

  1629. to accomplish

  1630. for the people

  1631. that he was

  1632. standing in front of

  1633. and the people

1634. he would be crucified for.

  1635. Jesus has a heart

  1636. for this.

1637. Do we have a heart

  1638. for it as well?

  1639. I appreciate

  1640. what E.M. Bounds

  1641. says.

  1642. He says,

  1643. prayer does not

  1644. fit us

  1645. for the greater work.

  1646. Prayer is

  1647. the greater work.

  1648. Are we people

  1649. who have committed

  1650. ourselves

  1651. to prayer?

  1652. You know,

  1653. I imagine

  1654. that there are

  1655. many of you

  1656. even now

  1657. that are in

  1658. the waiting room.

  1659. And if you're

  1660. anything like me,

  1661. you don't like it.

  1662. Waiting rooms

  1663. are not

  1664. the place

  1665. that I like

  1666. to hang out.

  1667. I don't want

1668. to be in a place

  1669. of having to

  1670. wait for

  1671. things to happen.

  1672. I want to be

  1673. the one

  1674. making things

  1675. happen.

  1676. But that's not

  1677. how God

  1678. designed it.

  1679. That's not

  1680. how it's

  1681. supposed to work.

  1682. That God

  1683. has made

  1684. the waiting room

  1685. for the purpose

  1686. of helping

  1687. to reinforce

  1688. and to push

  1689. right out in the

  1690. front,

  1691. forefront.

  1692. You cannot

  1693. do it.

  1694. It does not

  1695. depend on you.

  1696. It depends on me.

  1697. Praise the Lord

  1698. for the waiting room.

  1699. In whatever

  1700. waiting room

  1701. you are in

  1702. right now,

  1703. whatever thing

  1704. that you

  1705. are seeking

  1706. for God

  1707. to accomplish,

  1708. whatever

  1709. challenges

  1710. you face,

  1711. even whatever

  1712. joys that

  1713. you are

  1714. anticipating,

  1715. instead of

  1716. pushing that

  1717. forward,

  1718. instead of

  1719. forcing your

  1720. way,

  1721. instead of

  1722. getting it

  1723. done,

  1724. is there a

  1725. response of

  1726. your heart

  1727. to say,

  1728. Lord,

  1729. I'm waiting

  1730. for your

  1731. timing.

  1732. I'm waiting

  1733. for your

  1734. best.

  1735. And in

  1736. the process

  1737. of waiting,

  1738. I'm going

  1739. to pray that

  1740. you will

  1741. accomplish

  1742. your purposes

  1743. in me

  1744. and through

  1745. me for

  1746. others.

  1747. What a

  1748. blessing it is

  1749. to be in

  1750. the waiting

  1751. room.

  1752. Let's pray.

  1753. Father,

  1754. we understand

  1755. the waiting

  1756. room is hard

  1757. sometimes,

  1758. but you do

  1759. your greatest

  1760. work there

  1761. because it

  1762. drives us

  1763. to dependence.

  1764. It drives us

  1765. to rest,

  1766. not to

  1767. striving,

  1768. not to

  1769. working,

  1770. not to

  1771. get things

  1772. done,

  1773. not to

  1774. strategies,

  1775. not to

  1776. performance,

  1777. but to

  1778. dependence on

  1779. you.

  1780. Oh,

  1781. Lord,

  1782. I pray

  1783. that we

  1784. would learn

  1785. this lesson,

  1786. that you

  1787. delight in

  1788. waiting rooms.

  1789. And instead

  1790. of us trying

  1791. to hurry

  1792. things along,

  1793. may we

  1794. learn in

  1795. the process

  1796. to trust

  1797. you with

  1798. others in

  1799. prayer.

  1800. In Jesus'

  1801. name,

  1802. amen.

  1803. God bless

  1804. you.

  1805. Have a great

  1806. week.

  1807. God bless you.
