  1. Amen.

  2. Open your Bibles, if you would please, to Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  3. ! Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  4. If you're using the Pew Bibles, it's on page 909.

  5. We're making our way through the book of Acts,

  6. and we have spent at least the first chapter seeing

  7. that God is working through a group of individuals,

  8. a small group of individuals, 120,

  9. preparing them for this great work

  10. that we're going to begin to see start here in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  11. But what does it take to prepare a people for this work?

  12. Well, first thing it takes is patience.

  13. God is patiently preparing a people for himself.

  14. Now, I don't know if you can take a personal self-examination,

  15. a personal evaluation of your own heart.

  16. Are you, would you call yourself a patient person?

  17. Well, I know the immediate answer for myself is absolutely not.

  18. I am not a patient person.

  19. And by God's grace, he's been trying to develop this in me,

  20. and it's taken a lot of time.

  21. I'm sure that there's a lot of time to go in developing patience.

  22. But just thinking about the importance or the significance of waiting and growing in patience,

  23. I'm reminded of today.

  24. It's 27 years ago and five months that our first child was born.

  25. And when we first heard that we were pregnant,

  26. my first response was,

  27. What?

  28. How can that be possible?

  29. And I realized that God allows nine months and allows 40 weeks

  30. because there's some learning to do,

  31. there's some preparation that needs to happen in our heart,

  32. that God has graciously allowed there to be time in waiting

  33. to help create a sense of expectation

  34. so that we go from,

  35. How can we be having a baby?

  36. To,

  37. Hey,

  38. we're having a baby.

  39. And sometimes that happens well within that nine-month period of time.

  40. Sometimes it takes repeated opportunities to begin to learn that.

  41. And then as your children grow up,

  42. you're learning patience through that process as well.

  43. You're seeing yourself kind of reflected in the way that they respond.

  44. Hey,

  45. where did you get that?

  46. Oh,

  47. right,

  48. you got that from me,

  49. of course.

  50. But seeing how their life develops

  51. and seeing how God is fashioning them

  52. and seeing how God is instrumentally molding them

  53. and getting to see that have a front row seat

  54. to the work of God in their life

  55. that happens as God is helping us to grow in patience

  56. and preparing us for that work,

  57. not only in our children's life,

  58. but that work that's happening in our own life

  59. through that process.

  60. We realize that patience is God's gift.

  61. Instrumentally,

  62. it's a God's gift to us

  63. that God's delays are not God's rejection.

  64. God's delays aren't God's no.

  65. God's delays aren't God saying,

  66. I don't care.

  67. But it's God's way,

  68. His appointed means of preparing us,

  69. helping to grow us,

  70. helping us to refine us.

  71. This preparation process for the work that He wants to do,

  72. He accomplishes through,

  73. so often,

  74. the waiting room.

  75. This morning,

  76. as we look at the book of Acts again,

  77. I want to just remind ourselves

  78. of how the Lord prepares His people.

  79. You see,

  80. the Lord prepares His people

  81. through the waiting room.

  82. And what's going to break out in Jerusalem,

  83. beginning here in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  84. is this mighty work of God,

  85. this unstoppable movement,

  86. this church that begins to spring to life,

  87. and the work of God,

  88. working through His people instrumentally

  89. to build His church.

  90. We saw that,

  91. that God will build His church.

  92. The gates of hell will not prevail against it.

  93. But how does He accomplish that?

  94. Well, He accomplishes that through

  95. a waiting people.

  96. You see,

  97. if there's ever going to be

  98. a church that's birthed,

  99. it needs to begin

  100. with a person

  101. who understands

  102. what church means.

  103. What it means to be a church.

  104. What it means to anchor your heart,

  105. your faith,

  106. your confidence

  107. in who God is,

  108. and to learn instrumentally

  109. through that process of waiting

  110. that dependence,

  111. dependence on Him

  112. is the only way

  113. that He accomplishes

  114. His objectives.

  115. So, the Lord will prepare His church.

  116. And there are six ways.

  117. The Lord prepared His church,

  118. and we saw,

  119. we got to see that

  120. through the first chapter

  121. of Acts 1.

  122. We saw that the Lord

  123. confirms His message.

  124. That's His first way

  125. of preparing the church.

  126. You see,

  127. if He's going to make

  128. a people to Himself,

  129. they have to be a people

  130. that understand the gospel,

  131. that understand His message,

  132. that are anchored

  133. and confident

  134. in who Jesus is,

  135. and are able

  136. to share that message

  137. with others.

  138. They have to know

  139. the gospel.

  140. And so,

  141. there in Acts 1, verse 3,

    Acts 1:3

  142. we see that what Jesus did,

  143. notice,

  144. He presented Himself

  145. alive to them

  146. after His suffering

  147. by many proofs.

  148. Jesus showed up.

  149. After His death,

  150. there was a resurrection.

  151. resurrection.

  152. There cannot be a gospel

  153. without the resurrection.

  154. That's what Paul says

  155. in Romans 10, verse 9.

    Romans 10:9

  156. He says,

  157. If you confess with your mouth

  158. that Jesus is Lord,

  159. and you believe in your heart

  160. that God raised Jesus

  161. from the dead,

  162. you'll be saved.

  163. Without this evidence,

  164. in the work of Christ,

  165. or the work of God

  166. in raising Christ

  167. from the dead,

  168. there will be no gospel.

  169. And so,

  170. what does the Lord do?

  171. He helps to confirm

  172. the testimony

  173. of the gospel

  174. by allowing the disciples

  175. to be able to see

  176. the evidence

  177. of a resurrected Savior.

  178. What an incredible gift to us.

  179. So,

  180. the Savior shows up

  181. to the 12th

  182. on the night

  183. of the resurrection.

  184. And the Savior shows up

  185. to the disciples

  186. throughout this 40 days,

  187. this 40-day window

  188. between the Passover

  189. and His ascension.

  190. He meets them

  191. at least on two

  192. different occasions.

  193. One on the mountainside

  194. and one at the Sea of Galilee.

  195. He shows up to them again

  196. here in Jerusalem.

  197. He's meeting with them

  198. here in Jerusalem.

  199. He's confirming this message.

  200. The gospel is real.

  201. The evidence

  202. that God has given to us

  203. about the trustworthiness

  204. of the gospel

  205. is what we need

  206. to understand

  207. and recognize for ourselves.

  208. Do you believe

  209. in a resurrected Savior?

  210. Does your life

  211. demonstrate

  212. a commitment

  213. to that truth?

  214. Are you bearing that out?

  215. Is it evidencing itself

  216. in a life

  217. that is lived

  218. in response

  219. to a resurrected Lord?

  220. Not just believe it intellectually,

  221. but it's fundamentally

  222. changed who you are.

  223. You believe

  224. in a resurrected Lord

  225. and it's changed

  226. your life.

  227. Second,

  228. the Lord prepares

  229. His church

  230. by repeating

  231. His purpose.

  232. He wants the church

  233. to understand

  234. why

  235. they exist,

  236. why they belong,

  237. what is their mission,

  238. what is their purpose.

  239. And so,

  240. in verse 3,

  241. the second part,

  242. it says,

  243. He appeared to them

  244. during 40 days

  245. and speaking

  246. about the kingdom

  247. of God.

  248. That was their purpose.

  249. The purpose has been the same

  250. from the very beginning.

  251. Remember,

  252. during Jesus' ministry,

  253. what does He do?

  254. His ministry was characterized

  255. as proclaiming

  256. the kingdom of God.

  257. That He was

  258. the Son of David.

  259. He was the fulfillment

  260. of that promise.

  261. That He had come

  262. to be King

  263. and Lord

  264. over His people.

  265. Jesus' promises

  266. hadn't failed.

  267. And here,

  268. the death of Christ

  269. and now the resurrection

  270. of Christ

  271. and this confirmed

  272. message of Christ

  273. spoken to His disciples,

  274. confirmed

  275. that His promises

  276. had not failed.

  277. His purposes

  278. had not failed.

  279. That God was still

  280. going to bring

  281. a kingdom.

  282. He was still going

  283. to usher in a kingdom.

  284. But Jesus was still

  285. going to reign

  286. over His people.

  287. Third,

  288. God gives His commands.

  289. He gives His commands.

  290. We saw those.

  291. We've seen them

  292. for the last several weeks

  293. in verses 4 and 5

  294. of chapter 1

  295. where Jesus tells them

  296. while He was staying

  297. with them,

  298. He ordered them

  299. not to depart

  300. from Jerusalem

  301. but to wait

  302. for the promise

  303. of the Father.

  304. God has graciously

  305. given us instructions.

  306. God has graciously

  307. given us a word

  308. so that we can

  309. just follow

  310. what He's told us

  311. to do.

  312. You see,

  313. most of the time

  314. while those instructions

  315. that God has given

  316. to us are clear,

  317. while those instructions

  318. are often simple,

  319. most of the time

  320. the instructions

  321. that God gives to us

  322. are incremental.

  323. We get them

  324. one step at a time.

  325. Just like the psalmist

  326. says,

  327. Thy word is a lamp

  328. unto my feet

  329. and a light

  330. unto my path.

  331. We don't always

  332. know the master plan.

  333. We might know

  334. what the goal is.

  335. We might know

  336. how it starts.

  337. But incrementally,

  338. little by little,

  339. we have these

  340. incremental steps,

  341. these instructions

  342. that God gives to us

  343. so that we can know

  344. little by little,

  345. one step at a time,

  346. put one step

  347. in front of the other

  348. and we follow

  349. the instructions

  350. that God gives to us

  351. and He's given to us

  352. His gracious commands

  353. to follow.

  354. Fourth,

  355. He guides their obedience.

  356. He guides their obedience.

  357. We see that in verses

  358. 12 and 13

  359. of chapter 1.

  360. Notice,

  361. they returned

  362. to Jerusalem

  363. and when they had entered

  364. they went up

  365. to the upper room.

  366. They followed

  367. the instructions

  368. that they were given

  369. and God is graciously

  370. guiding them

  371. in their obedience

  372. and helping them

  373. understand

  374. that simple obedience

  375. to the commands

  376. of God

  377. yields the results,

  378. the product,

  379. the life

  380. and the fruit

  381. that God would

  382. seek to give to us.

  383. Go to Jerusalem.

  384. Wait for power.

  385. Simple instructions

  386. carried out

  387. in obedience.

  388. And the result

  389. of that is

  390. what is going

  391. to happen

  392. in Jerusalem

  393. does not depend

  394. upon what you bring

  395. to the table.

  396. It doesn't depend

  397. on your ingenuity.

  398. It doesn't rest

  399. on the numbers

  400. as it were.

  401. It doesn't rest

  402. on your unique giftedness

  403. or your knowledge,

  404. your vision

  405. or the strategy

  406. that you bring

  407. to the table

  408. but simply

  409. on your obedience

  410. and that's what they do.

  411. They return

  412. to Jerusalem.

  413. They go

  414. to the upper room.

  415. They wait

  416. for the promise

  417. of the Spirit.

  418. God is guiding

  419. their obedience

  420. and helping them

  421. to understand

  422. and obedient people

  423. are the people

  424. that God will use.

  425. I'm reminded

  426. of what John says

  427. in 1 John 2.

  428. He says,

  429. this is how

  430. that you know

  431. that you know me

  432. if you keep

  433. my commandments.

  434. Are we

  435. those who know

  436. the commands

  437. of God?

  438. Are we those

  439. who settle

  440. our hearts

  441. in faithful,

  442. deliberate

  443. obedience

  444. step by step

  445. that's often

  446. incremental?

  447. We don't have

  448. to know

  449. what the future

  450. holds necessarily.

  451. We just have

  452. to know

  453. what the next

  454. step is

  455. and to commit

  456. ourselves

  457. in obedience

  458. to what he said.

  459. God delights

  460. in using

  461. those kinds

  462. of people.

  463. Fifth,

  464. he strengthens

  465. their dependence.

  466. He strengthens

  467. their dependence.

  468. Notice verse 14.

  469. All these

  470. with one accord

  471. were devoting

  472. themselves

  473. to prayer

  474. together

  475. with the women

  476. and Mary

  477. the mother

  478. of Jesus

  479. and his brothers.

  480. Yes,

  481. they go back

  482. to Jerusalem

  483. and what do

  484. they do

  485. once they get there?

  486. Well,

  487. they unite.

  488. They're united.

  489. They're one accord.

  490. They're together

  491. and they pray.

  492. They pray

  493. for God's

  494. help.

  495. They pray

  496. for God

  497. to bring

  498. his power.

  499. They pray

  500. for God

  501. to direct

  502. their hearts.

  503. They pray

  504. for God

  505. to glorify

  506. himself.

  507. They pray

  508. for God

  509. to accomplish

  510. his purposes,

  511. his mission.

  512. The mission,

  513. your kingdom

  514. come,

  515. your will be

  516. done on earth

  517. as it is in heaven.

  518. God,

  519. we pray

  520. that your

  521. purposes

  522. will stand

  523. and we

  524. are depending

  525. upon you

  526. to do your

  527. work.

  528. We bring

  529. nothing to the table.

  530. We understand

  531. that it's going

  532. to happen

  533. through your power.

  534. We depend

  535. on you.

  536. We are a

  537. praying

  538. dependent

  539. people.

  540. In sixth,

  541. God's preparing

  542. them by helping

  543. to establish

  544. their leaders.

  545. Helping to

  546. establish

  547. their leaders.

  548. We see that

  549. in verses,

  550. in verse 15.

  551. It says,

  552. In those days,

  553. Peter stood up

  554. among the brothers.

  555. Then verse 16,

  556. Brothers,

  557. the scripture

  558. must be fulfilled

  559. which the Holy

  560. Spirit spoke

  561. beforehand by the

  562. mouth of David

  563. concerning Judas.

  564. Peter takes

  565. the lead.

  566. He doesn't just

  567. assume this role.

  568. He doesn't just

  569. place himself

  570. in this spot

  571. of leadership

  572. haphazardly.

  573. He has been

  574. commissioned

  575. by the Lord

  576. himself

  577. to step

  578. into this role

  579. and to fulfill

  580. the role

  581. of leadership

  582. among this

  583. group.

  584. They recognize

  585. that Judas

  586. has kind of

  587. been escorted

  588. out.

  589. He's been

  590. dismissed,

  591. as it were.

  592. His betrayal

  593. has disqualified

  594. him from leadership

  595. and now they

  596. need a full

  597. team.

  598. So Peter

  599. encourages

  600. the believers

  601. who are there

  602. to choose

  603. among themselves

  604. two men.

  605. Joseph,

  606. Matthias,

  607. they're going

  608. to put those

  609. men before

  610. the congregation

  611. and before

  612. these believers

  613. and they're

  614. going to allow

  615. God to affirm

  616. and confirm

  617. this team.

  618. You find that

  619. in verse 26,

  620. they cast lots.

  621. The lot fell

  622. on Matthias

  623. and he was

  624. numbered with

  625. the eleven

  626. apostles.

  627. God is

  628. reestablishing

  629. his leadership.

  630. God is using

  631. qualified leaders

  632. to accomplish

  633. his purposes

  634. and that's how

  635. God does it.

  636. We find from

  637. Ephesians chapter

  638. two,

  639. verse 20,

  640. is that the

  641. church is built

  642. on the foundation

  643. of the apostles

  644. and prophets,

  645. Jesus Christ

  646. himself being

  647. the chief

  648. cornerstone.

  649. This is God's

  650. strategy.

  651. He uses

  652. spiritual leaders

  653. to accomplish

  654. his priorities.

  655. These qualified

  656. leaders will show

  657. they have this

  658. preserving faith,

  659. this persevering

  660. faith,

  661. this staying

  662. power,

  663. this dependence

  664. on God,

  665. this commitment

  666. to follow truth

  667. and so they're

  668. in the perfect

  669. place to be

  670. used by God

  671. then to begin

  672. this incredible,

  673. amazing mission,

  674. this church

  675. building mission.

  676. And with all

  677. of that in place,

  678. they were finally

  679. ready to carry out

  680. that mission that

  681. God had set

  682. before them.

  683. They're convinced

  684. of the gospel,

  685. its message,

  686. they're convinced

  687. of God's purpose,

  688. they're informed

  689. of his commands,

  690. they are demonstrating

  691. obedience to his

  692. instructions,

  693. they're dependent

  694. on the Lord

  695. to work,

  696. and they understand

  697. his design

  698. for leadership.

  699. Do we want God

  700. to use us

  701. instrumentally?

  702. Do we want to be

  703. found faithful?

  704. Do we want

  705. to enjoy the same

  706. benefits of what

  707. the early church

  708. experienced?

  709. Do we want God

  710. to accomplish

  711. his purposes

  712. through us?

  713. The same strategy,

  714. the same preparation,

  715. the same work

  716. needs to happen

  717. in every single

  718. heart?

  719. Do we know

  720. the gospel?

  721. Do we embrace

  722. Jesus Christ?

  723. Do we know

  724. his instructions?

  725. Are we carrying

  726. them out

  727. from day to day?

  728. Are we dependent

  729. on the Lord

  730. to do this work?

  731. Are we deferring

  732. to the leaders

  733. that God has set

  734. over us

  735. and seeking

  736. to draw them

  737. into the process

  738. of growing

  739. and instruction

  740. and learning

  741. and following

  742. the strategies

  743. that God

  744. has entrusted

  745. to them?

  746. You see,

  747. the Lord

  748. delights

  749. in preparing

  750. his people.

  751. He often does

  752. that through

  753. the waiting room.

  754. He often does

  755. that through

  756. this process

  757. of patience

  758. because he wants

  759. to create

  760. a people

  761. for himself.

  762. Next,

  763. we see

  764. in chapter 2,

  765. verses 1 and 4,

  766. not only does

  767. the Lord

  768. prepare his people,

  769. but the Spirit

  770. empowers

  771. his people.

  772. Notice this

  773. with me.

  774. When the day

  775. of Pentecost

  776. arrived,

  777. they were all

  778. together in one

  779. place,

  780. and suddenly

  781. there came

  782. from heaven

  783. a sound

  784. like a mighty

  785. rushing wind.

  786. It filled

  787. the entire house

  788. where they were

  789. sitting,

  790. and divided

  791. tongues

  792. as of fire

  793. appeared to them

  794. and rested

  795. on each

  796. one of them.

  797. And they were

  798. all filled

  799. with the Holy

  800. Spirit,

  801. and began

  802. to speak

  803. in other tongues

  804. as the Spirit

  805. gave them

  806. utterance.

  807. What dominated

  808. the last 10 days?

  809. The days

  810. between Jesus'

  811. ascension

  812. and the day

  813. of this

  814. Pentecost,

  815. this day

  816. of the indwelling?

  817. How would you

  818. have characterized

  819. these individuals?

  820. Well,

  821. they were

  822. a waiting people.

  823. They were

  824. a praying people.

  825. They were

  826. a unified people.

  827. They were

  828. a people

  829. who were

  830. devoting

  831. themselves

  832. to the

  833. Scripture,

  834. and so

  835. when the

  836. Spirit comes,

  837. we see

  838. the benefits

  839. of their

  840. togetherness.

  841. We see

  842. the benefits

  843. of their

  844. faith in

  845. the Lord

  846. Jesus.

  847. Here in

  848. chapter 2,

  849. verse 1,

  850. we see

  851. for the

  852. fourth time

  853. now,

  854. the disciples

  855. who are

  856. intentionally

  857. gathering

  858. together

  859. to see

  860. what God

  861. will do.

  862. We saw

  863. that in

  864. chapter 1,

  865. verse 6.

  866. Speaking of

  867. the disciples,

  868. they had

  869. come

  870. together.

  871. In chapter 1,

  872. verse 14,

  873. they were

  874. all together

  875. in one accord.

  876. In chapter 1,

  877. verse 15,

  878. Peter stands

  879. among the

  880. brothers who

  881. are together.

  882. And now,

  883. again,

  884. for a fourth

  885. time,

  886. chapter 2,

  887. verse 1,

  888. they are all

  889. together

  890. in one place.

  891. In all of this,

  892. they set an

  893. example for the

  894. church today.

  895. the importance

  896. of togetherness,

  897. the importance

  898. of unity,

  899. the importance

  900. of a united,

  901. consolidated

  902. purpose,

  903. following after

  904. the Lord.

  905. If we're ever

  906. going to enjoy

  907. and experience

  908. the power

  909. of God,

  910. we need to be a

  911. people who are

  912. together and a

  913. people who are

  914. characterized

  915. by waiting.

  916. They were waiting.

  917. Waiting for the

  918. power of God

  919. to show up.

  920. I wonder,

  921. when was the

  922. last time

  923. that you ever

  924. waited for God

  925. instead of

  926. worked around

  927. God?

  928. When was the

  929. last time that

  930. actually your

  931. first reflex

  932. was to pray

  933. and not to

  934. press forward?

  935. Now,

  936. I'm speaking to

  937. you,

  938. I'm speaking to

  939. myself as much

  940. as I'm speaking

  941. to you because

  942. that is our

  943. reflex, right?

  944. Our reflex is

  945. not to wait.

  946. It's not to

  947. pray.

  948. It's not to

  949. depend.

  950. Our reflex is

  951. to get things

  952. done, to make

  953. things happen.

  954. Our reflex is

  955. to move forward.

  956. When we feel

  957. like God is

  958. silent, when we

  959. feel we haven't

  960. heard from

  961. Him, we want

  962. to make sure

  963. that we carry

  964. out His work

  965. and so we get

  966. ahead of God

  967. instead of

  968. wait for God.

  969. We do our

  970. own thing

  971. instead of

  972. waiting for God

  973. to do His

  974. thing.

  975. I wonder

  976. if much of

  977. our problem

  978. begins there.

  979. The importance

  980. of waiting,

  981. the importance

  982. of resting,

  983. the importance

  984. of depending.

  985. Instead of

  986. waiting for God,

  987. we often work

  988. around Him.

  989. At least we

  990. think we are.

  991. And so this

  992. body of

  993. believers is

  994. experiencing now

  995. the benefits of

  996. the waiting,

  997. depending process.

  998. process.

  999. And so we

  1000. find the grace

  1001. of God that

  1002. now comes on

  1003. them here in

  1004. chapter 2,

  1005. verse 1.

  1006. You see,

  1007. Jesus had come

  1008. boldly and He

  1009. had come bodily

  1010. to them, to the

  1011. disciples in Acts

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1012. chapter 1.

  1013. What a grace it

  1014. was for Jesus to

  1015. show up in a

  1016. very physical,

  1017. very visible way

  1018. over 40 days.

  1019. And here the

  1020. Spirit, Spirit

  1021. is invisible.

  1022. He is Spirit.

  1023. We can't see

  1024. Him.

  1025. But even in

  1026. this, the grace

  1027. of God in

  1028. bringing His

  1029. Spirit in a way

  1030. that was

  1031. recognizable, that

  1032. was perceptible.

  1033. Notice the

  1034. sounds.

  1035. Notice the

  1036. sight, the

  1037. gracious gift of

  1038. God in giving

  1039. to Himself in

  1040. this way.

  1041. Verse 2.

  1042. Suddenly, there

  1043. came from heaven

  1044. a sound like a

  1045. mighty rushing

  1046. wind.

  1047. It filled the

  1048. entire house

  1049. where they were

  1050. sitting.

  1051. In divided tongues

  1052. as a fire

  1053. appeared to them

  1054. and rested on

  1055. each one of

  1056. them.

  1057. This word

  1058. suddenly happened

  1059. in a way that

  1060. they weren't

  1061. expecting.

  1062. They had

  1063. anticipated His

  1064. coming, but they

  1065. didn't know the

  1066. moment.

  1067. It came on them

  1068. suddenly.

  1069. And I love how

  1070. John Piper puts

  1071. this.

  1072. He says,

  1073. speaking of the

  1074. Spirit, He keeps

  1075. His own hours.

  1076. You see, the

  1077. Spirit doesn't

  1078. always follow our

  1079. own prescribed

  1080. plans.

  1081. As Jesus will

  1082. say of the

  1083. Holy Spirit in

  1084. John chapter 3,

    John 3 chapter mention

  1085. He blows

  1086. wherever He

  1087. wishes.

  1088. And while we

  1089. have access to

  1090. His power, and

  1091. those of us who

  1092. live in this age

  1093. are indwelt by

  1094. the Spirit, He

  1095. doesn't come and

  1096. go like He did

  1097. in the Old

  1098. Testament.

  1099. We have the

  1100. Holy Spirit, but

  1101. He doesn't often

  1102. operate or work in

  1103. the way that we

  1104. desire, we

  1105. expect.

  1106. And here in

  1107. Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1108. this whole new

  1109. movement that's

  1110. taking place where

  1111. He comes

  1112. suddenly.

  1113. He comes

  1114. unexpectedly, but

  1115. He comes very

  1116. obviously.

  1117. Notice this

  1118. sound.

  1119. The sound.

  1120. It was like a

  1121. mighty rushing

  1122. wind.

  1123. It was audible.

  1124. They could hear

  1125. it.

  1126. It was discernible.

  1127. In the Greek, this

  1128. word for pneuma is

  1129. the word for wind

  1130. or breath.

  1131. It's also the word

  1132. for spirit.

  1133. It carries this

  1134. double meaning.

  1135. So the mighty

  1136. rushing wind and

  1137. then the presence of

  1138. the Holy Spirit that

  1139. was available.

  1140. There's also this

  1141. double meaning of

  1142. this sight.

  1143. What they saw.

  1144. They saw divided

  1145. tongues as of

  1146. fire.

  1147. It appeared to

  1148. them and rested on

  1149. each one of them.

  1150. Again, kind of this

  1151. double meaning where

  1152. tongues can either

  1153. mean the physical

  1154. organ of the tongue.

  1155. It can also mean

  1156. languages.

  1157. It can mean what's

  1158. spoken.

  1159. This double meaning

  1160. helping the people

  1161. who were there to

  1162. understand what this

  1163. gift was about to

  1164. accomplish.

  1165. This flaming tongue

  1166. that rested on each

1167. one was going to be a

  1168. representation of this

  1169. Holy Spirit empowering

1170. that was going to help

  1171. them speak in

  1172. multiple tongues,

  1173. in multiple languages.

1174. This will be the only

  1175. time we find through

  1176. all of the scriptures

  1177. where the Spirit comes

  1178. this way.

  1179. Comes in a flaming

  1180. tongue of fire.

  1181. It was unique.

  1182. It was special.

  1183. It was set apart.

  1184. Why?

  1185. Because God wants to

  1186. help his people

  1187. understand that

  1188. something new is

  1189. happening.

  1190. Yes, the Spirit will

  1191. come in power.

1192. We see his coming in

  1193. power in Acts chapter

    Acts 4:31

  1194. 4 verse 31.

  1195. And when they had

  1196. prayed, the place

  1197. which they were

  1198. gathered together was

  1199. shaken and they were

  1200. filled with the Spirit

  1201. and continued to speak

1202. the word of God with

  1203. boldness.

1204. He will come in power

  1205. again in Acts chapter

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  1206. 16 where you know

1207. Paul and Silas are there

  1208. and they're singing.

  1209. They've been imprisoned

  1210. and they're singing.

  1211. And the Spirit comes.

  1212. The prison is shaken.

  1213. The shackles are released

  1214. and the prison doors

  1215. open.

1216. The power of God is

  1217. discernible there as

  1218. well.

1219. But he won't come in

  1220. this way, described in

  1221. coming this way, ever

  1222. again.

1223. We won't see tongues of

1224. fire in this unique sense.

  1225. But this gift, notice,

  1226. this gift comes on

  1227. everyone.

  1228. Verse 3.

  1229. Divided tongues of fire

  1230. appeared to them and

1231. rested on each one of

  1232. them.

1233. And it says they were

  1234. all filled with the

  1235. Spirit.

  1236. Not just the leaders

  1237. but the entire

  1238. congregation enjoys the

  1239. benefit.

  1240. All the believers who

  1241. were gathered enjoy the

  1242. benefits of the

  1243. indwelling Holy Spirit.

  1244. And I believe that

1245. this is not what they

  1246. necessarily expected.

  1247. I think this shattered

  1248. their categories.

  1249. This shattered their

  1250. expectations.

  1251. Because remember what

  1252. God had promised the

  1253. disciples, the apostles,

  1254. in the upper room.

  1255. Luke 24, 39.

  1256. I am sending the

  1257. promise of my Father

  1258. upon you.

  1259. But stay in Jerusalem

  1260. until you are clothed

  1261. with power from on

  1262. high.

  1263. Spoken to thee, the

  1264. twelve.

  1265. And then in Acts

    Acts 1:4

  1266. chapter 1, verse 4 and

  1267. 5.

1268. Wait for the promise of

  1269. the Father.

1270. You will be baptized with

  1271. the Holy Spirit.

  1272. The original expectation

1273. is that the Spirit would

  1274. come on the apostles.

1275. They knew that God was

  1276. going to build his

  1277. church.

  1278. They knew that the

  1279. mission was going to

1280. result in the ends of

  1281. the world, understanding

  1282. and hearing the gospel.

1283. But I think that when

1284. the Spirit comes on each

1285. one of them, it shattered

  1286. every expectation.

  1287. God's grace poured out.

1288. Now, of course, of course

  1289. there was this Old

  1290. Testament expectation of

  1291. what the new covenant

  1292. would look like.

  1293. From Ezekiel chapter 36,

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

1294. I will give my Holy Spirit,

1295. put my Holy Spirit upon

  1296. you.

1297. But in the Old Testament,

1298. the Spirit came in a way

  1299. that was utterly different

1300. than what we see here in

  1301. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

1302. In at least three ways.

1303. First, in the Old Testament,

  1304. the Old Covenant, the

  1305. Spirit's coming was

  1306. temporary, not permanent.

1307. That's why David would say,

1308. take not your Holy Spirit

  1309. from me.

  1310. Right?

1311. And that's why the Holy

1312. Spirit would come on King

1313. Saul and would allow him

  1314. to prophesy.

1315. But towards the end of

  1316. his life, there's no

1317. Spirit on his life in

  1318. ministry anymore.

  1319. His reign.

  1320. Second, the Spirit's coming

1321. in the Old Testament was

  1322. selective.

  1323. Spirit would come on

  1324. certain individuals to

  1325. equip them for certain

  1326. tasks.

  1327. Like Bezalel, remember?

1328. He is the one who was

1329. tasked by Moses to build

  1330. the tabernacle and to

  1331. build the furniture that

  1332. was in the tabernacle.

  1333. And that special gifting

1334. of the Holy Spirit was

1335. placed on him so that he

1336. could carry out that work.

1337. He could do the task.

1338. Third, it was a ministry

1339. of the Spirit that came

1340. on a person and not

  1341. something that indwelt a

1342. person as we find here in

  1343. Acts chapter 2 verse 1.

    Acts 2:1

  1344. Repeatedly we find

  1345. throughout the Old

  1346. Testament.

  1347. The judges, for example,

1348. who the Spirit would come

  1349. on.

  1350. Otniel in Judges chapter

    Judges 3:10

  1351. 3 verse 10.

1352. The Spirit of the Lord was

  1353. upon him.

  1354. Then Gideon, Judges

    Judges 6:34

  1355. chapter 6 verse 34.

1356. The Spirit of the Lord

  1357. clothed Gideon.

1358. And then some of the

  1359. kings.

  1360. Azariah in 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 15:1

  1361. chapter 15 verse 1.

1362. The Spirit of God came

  1363. upon Azariah.

  1364. And then Zechariah, 2

  1365. Chronicles 24 20.

1366. The Spirit of God clothed

  1367. Zechariah.

1368. It was a unique, special

1369. kind of work that the

  1370. Spirit did for certain

  1371. individuals for a

  1372. specific amount of time

  1373. and for a specific

  1374. purpose.

  1375. But now, this unique

1376. work of the Spirit would

  1377. mark every true believer.

1378. It would mark them as a

  1379. new covenant person.

  1380. A new covenant believer.

1381. Remember, as we find in

  1382. Ezekiel 36, I will put my

  1383. Spirit within you and

1384. cause you to walk in my

  1385. statutes and to carefully

  1386. obey my rules.

1387. Now, this ministry would be

  1388. a permanent mark of God's

  1389. people.

1390. He would indwell them for

1391. the ministry that he had

1392. called them to carry out.

1393. As we find in Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:13

  1394. chapter 1 verses 13 and 14,

  1395. it says this,

1396. In Him, you also trusted

1397. when you heard the word of

1398. truth, the gospel of your

  1399. salvation, and you

  1400. believed in Him.

1401. You were sealed with the

1402. promised Holy Spirit who is

  1403. the guarantee of our

  1404. inheritance until we acquire

1405. possession of it to the

  1406. praise of His glory.

1407. If you are a child of God,

1408. if you are a person who has

1409. placed your faith in Jesus

  1410. Christ, if you have

1411. acknowledged that He is the

1412. only way of salvation, if

1413. you are now looking forward

1414. to being with Him one day

1415. and you have bowed your

1416. life to His Lordship, you

1417. are one then who enjoys and

  1418. experiences this indwelling

1419. presence of the Spirit and

1420. you will have it eternally.

  1421. What a tremendous, what a

  1422. tremendous advantage and

1423. privilege we have as God's

  1424. people that distinguishes

  1425. us from Old Testament

  1426. saints.

1427. But the Apostle Paul sees

1428. this as something that is a

  1429. deficiency in the church.

1430. Something that they have, but

1431. not something that they enjoy.

1432. He prays for the church on

  1433. at least two different

  1434. occasions.

  1435. In Colossians chapter 1,

    Colossians 1:9

1436. verse 9, he says this,

1437. And so, from the day we

1438. heard, we have not ceased to

1439. pray for you, asking that you

1440. may be filled with the

1441. knowledge of His will in all

  1442. spiritual wisdom and

  1443. understanding, being

  1444. strengthened with all power

  1445. according to His glorious

1446. might, for all endurance and

  1447. patience with joy.

1448. This is the reality for every

1449. believer who has placed their

  1450. faith in Jesus Christ.

1451. You enjoy the benefits of the

  1452. indwelling Holy Spirit.

1453. But the Apostle Paul, in

  1454. seeing the church of

  1455. Colossae, and seeing the

  1456. church throughout this known

  1457. world, recognizes the power

1458. that is there, but is praying

1459. that the church will come to

1460. terms with this power and put

  1461. it to work.

1462. How many times have we said,

  1463. I just can't do that.

  1464. I'm just not qualified.

  1465. I'm just not capable.

  1466. I don't have the power to

  1467. obey God's rules.

  1468. I feel so stunted.

  1469. I feel so inadequate.

  1470. I feel so ineffective.

1471. I cannot do what God is

  1472. calling me to do.

1473. And that's what the Apostle

1474. Paul is praying about here.

1475. Oh Lord, please help this

1476. church who has all of the

  1477. power of your Spirit

  1478. resident in their life,

1479. help them to understand that

1480. while they may be insufficient,

  1481. inadequate, and ineffective

1482. on their own, they can carry

1483. out the purpose that you have

1484. called them to, and they can

1485. do it because of your power,

  1486. not because of theirs.

1487. In Ephesians chapter 1, verses

    Ephesians 1:15

  1488. 15 and 16, the Apostle Paul

1489. prays for the church there.

  1490. He says,

  1491. If you're a follower of Jesus,

1492. if you have placed your faith

1493. in Jesus Christ, you have

  1494. this kind of power.

1495. My guess is that no one in

1496. this room would ever say,

1497. Jesus Christ just can't pull

  1498. that off.

1499. And yet, everyone in this

1500. room, if you've been indwelt

1501. by the Spirit, have the power

1502. of Jesus in your life.

1503. How dare we ever say,

1504. the Spirit cannot pull this off.

  1505. I wonder if it's because we

1506. treat the Holy Spirit like a

  1507. backup generator instead of

1508. treating the Lord Jesus like

  1509. the power source.

1510. The source of power, the source

1511. of help, the source of support,

1512. the one who wants to draw glory

1513. and praise to himself and not

  1514. to you.

1515. And so, when we come face to face

1516. with our inadequacy, we say,

1517. Jesus is able, God is able

1518. through his Spirit to pull

1519. this off, to show his power.

  1520. I'm trusting him.

  1521. That's why I love the statement

  1522. that Phillips Brooks says.

  1523. He says,

1524. Pray not for an easy life.

1525. Pray to be stronger men.

1526. Pray not for tasks equal to

  1527. your power.

1528. Pray for power equal to the task.

1529. And every single one of us have

1530. the power of the Holy Spirit

  1531. working through.

1532. And all things are possible

  1533. with God.

1534. He can equip you for the work

1535. that he's called you to do.

  1536. Okay?

1537. And maybe that's the guiding

  1538. statement here.

1539. Is that we need to understand

1540. that the purposes that God

1541. has called us to are very clear

  1542. in his word.

1543. And as we are faithful

1544. to carry out those instructions,

1545. we can trust that God will work

  1546. out those purposes.

1547. Finally, the Lord prepares his people.

1548. The Spirit empowers his people.

1549. And finally, the gospel marks

  1550. God's people.

1551. The gospel marks God's people.

1552. Notice in verse 5, it says,

1553. Now, they were dwelling in Jerusalem,

  1554. excuse me,

1555. they were dwelling in Jerusalem,

1556. Jews, devout men from every nation

  1557. under heaven,

1558. and at the sound of the multitude

  1559. came together,

  1560. and they were bewildered

1561. because each one was hearing

1562. them speak in his own language.

  1563. And they were amazed

  1564. and astonished, saying,

  1565. Are not all these

  1566. who are speaking Galileans?

1567. How is it that we hear each one,

  1568. each of us,

1569. in his own native language?

  1570. Parthians and Medes,

  1571. Elamites and residents

  1572. of Mesopotamia,

  1573. Judea and Cappadocia,

  1574. Pontus and Asia,

  1575. Phrygia and Pamphylia,

1576. Egypt and parts of Libya,

  1577. belonging to Cyrene,

  1578. and visitors from Rome,

  1579. both Jews and proselytes,

  1580. Cretans and Arabians,

  1581. we hear them telling

  1582. in our own tongues

1583. the mighty works of God.

  1584. There's a lot of confusion today

1585. as to what is the gift of tongues?

  1586. What is this gift?

  1587. Who has this gift?

1588. What does it look like?

1589. And how does it play out?

  1590. Well, here we find

  1591. in chapter 2, verse 1,

  1592. some very clear definitions

1593. of what this gift accomplishes.

  1594. Not ecstatic languages

  1595. that can't be understood,

  1596. but specific, precise languages.

1597. Now, while the word tongue

  1598. can be understood generally,

  1599. and it's somewhat ambiguous,

1600. what does a tongue mean?

1601. What does a tongue do?

1602. The word language or dialect

  1603. that we find here

  1604. is very specific.

  1605. It's very precise.

  1606. And here we find

1607. there are at least 16 different groups

1608. and probably as many as 18

  1609. different specific languages

  1610. that are identified

  1611. and are used

1612. and are finding their way

1613. in this city of Jerusalem.

1614. And what is the goal?

1615. What is the final purpose?

1616. We find it here in verse 11.

  1617. We hear them telling

  1618. in our own tongues

1619. the mighty works of God.

1620. That's what God has called us to.

  1621. Speaking and proclaiming

1622. the mighty works of God.

  1623. Sometimes the gospel

  1624. is just that easy.

  1625. And notice again

  1626. this wind that caused

  1627. these people to gather

1628. and the grace of God

  1629. in allowing them

  1630. who weren't yet believers

  1631. to experience

  1632. and to see

1633. the same kinds of things

  1634. that the believers

  1635. in the upper room

  1636. were experiencing.

  1637. This wind,

  1638. this rush of wind.

  1639. And because of it,

  1640. they were amazed.

  1641. They were astonished.

  1642. Luke heaps up words

  1643. to describe

  1644. the crowd's perplexity.

  1645. They were blown away.

  1646. They didn't know

  1647. what in the world

  1648. was happening

  1649. because each one

  1650. was hearing them speak

  1651. in his own language

1652. and this gift of tongues

  1653. that is this spoken,

  1654. distinct languages

  1655. with the intention

  1656. of proclaiming

1657. the mighty works of God.

1658. When the Spirit comes in power,

  1659. He fills you up

1660. with the greatness of God

1661. and a desire to speak

  1662. those great words

  1663. about Him.

  1664. Those who are filled

  1665. with the Spirit

  1666. will speak about

1667. the wonderful works of God

  1668. because they will be

  1669. speaking the words

  1670. of the Spirit

  1671. who came to make

  1672. Jesus known.

  1673. If someone listened

1674. to your speech this week,

  1675. how would they categorize

  1676. your speech?

  1677. Would they place it

  1678. in the category of

  1679. this is a person

  1680. who speaks about God

1681. in a way that makes

  1682. Him look glorious?

  1683. Or would they say,

1684. well this is a person

  1685. who is marked out

  1686. as being an absolute

  1687. complainer,

  1688. an absolute bellyache,

  1689. critical about everyone

  1690. around them,

  1691. always anxious,

  1692. always fearful,

  1693. always wondering

  1694. who is going to,

  1695. when that next shoe

  1696. is going to drop?

  1697. Or are we people

  1698. who are faithfully

  1699. proclaiming those

  1700. mighty works of God

  1701. wherever we go?

1702. I love how the Apostle

  1703. Peter puts it

  1704. in 1 Peter 2,

    1 Peter 2:9

  1705. verses 9 and 10.

  1706. He says,

1707. you are a chosen generation.

1708. You are a royal priesthood.

1709. You are a holy nation.

  1710. You are God's own

  1711. special people.

  1712. Why?

  1713. So that you would

  1714. proclaim the praises

  1715. of Him

  1716. who called you

  1717. out of darkness

  1718. into His marvelous light.

  1719. what kind of

  1720. wonderful works of God

  1721. has He been doing

  1722. in your life?

  1723. How do we focus

  1724. on God's grace

  1725. in our life,

  1726. God's forgiveness

  1727. in our life,

  1728. God's power

  1729. in our life,

  1730. God's provision

  1731. in our life,

  1732. God's help

  1733. in sustaining us

  1734. in this life,

  1735. all the mighty works

  1736. of God

  1737. that He does

  1738. time and time

  1739. and time again.

  1740. I'm reminded of

  1741. Psalm 103

  1742. and I'm just beginning

  1743. to memorize this

  1744. so bear with me.

  1745. It begins this way.

  1746. It says,

  1747. oh bless the Lord

  1748. oh my soul

1749. and all that is within me

  1750. bless His holy name.

  1751. Bless the Lord

  1752. oh my soul

1753. and all that is within me

  1754. and forget not

  1755. all His benefits.

  1756. Who redeems your life

  1757. from the pit.

  1758. Who forgives

  1759. all your iniquities.

  1760. who crowns you

  1761. with love

  1762. and kindness.

  1763. Who satisfies you

  1764. with good things

  1765. that your youth

  1766. is renewed

  1767. like the eagles.

  1768. All the benefits,

  1769. all the joys

  1770. that those who know

  1771. the Lord

  1772. get to experience.

  1773. Is that

  1774. the confession

  1775. of our life?

  1776. Bless the Lord

  1777. oh my soul

1778. in all that is within me

  1779. bless

  1780. His holy name.

  1781. May we be

  1782. those kinds of people

  1783. and may

  1784. that confession

  1785. of the mighty works

  1786. of God

  1787. have the same kind

  1788. of result

1789. that we're going to see

  1790. as we continue

  1791. to work our way

  1792. through Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1793. The work of God

  1794. working in hearts

  1795. because of the confession

  1796. of faithful

  1797. believers in Jesus.

  1798. Let's pray.

  1799. Lord thank you

  1800. for your gift

  1801. of grace

  1802. in calling us

  1803. to yourself

  1804. in making

  1805. a people

  1806. that are prepared

  1807. for you.

  1808. Help us

  1809. to be those

  1810. who are

  1811. not just

  1812. indwelt

  1813. by the Spirit

  1814. but those

  1815. who are living

  1816. each day

  1817. with spiritual

  1818. power

  1819. carrying out

  1820. the work

  1821. that you've

  1822. called us to

  1823. in the little

  1824. things

  1825. in the big

  1826. things

  1827. and ultimately

  1828. Lord

  1829. that we would

  1830. give confession

  1831. to our glorious

  1832. God

  1833. that we would

  1834. proclaim

  1835. the praises

  1836. of him

  1837. who called

  1838. us out of

  1839. darkness

  1840. into his

  1841. marvelous light.

  1842. May you be

  1843. glorified.

  1844. May you be

  1845. pleased

  1846. with our

  1847. conversations

  1848. this week

  1849. in Jesus name.

  1850. Amen.

  1851. God bless you.

  1852. Have a great week.

  1853. God bless you.
