  1. I would encourage you to open up your Bibles, if you would please, to John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  2. ! John chapter 20. If you're using the Pew Bible, it's on page 906 in the Pew Bible, 920.

    John 20 chapter mention

  3. John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  4. Any of you who've been a part of the church for any length of time, probably have those memories,

  5. those memories as a child, perhaps especially of Easter, those traditions that maybe your family had.

  6. One of those traditions our family had was Easter baskets on Sunday morning,

  7. and the kids were allowed to try to go and find those baskets,

  8. and it was just one of the ways that we anticipated the wonder of what Christ did in terms of rising from the dead.

  9. And those early morning experiences of the women who went to the tomb to look for the Messiah in the tomb,

  10. but he wasn't there.

  11. Those early childhood memories run deep, don't they?

  12. And I think a lot of the experiences that we have as Christians are formed and deepened in our childhood.

  13. I think of the time, the things that I was taught in Sunday school, for example.

  14. The things I was taught at VBS, the things I learned in Awana, those verses that became familiar to me.

  15. Those experiences of faithful men and women who taught me as a child, but also into my teenage years.

  16. All the benefits of those formative years of learning the scripture for men and women who love Jesus.

  17. And I would just say, we are so blessed here at Maranatha.

  18. All of the men and women at Maranatha who invest in our children, I'm grateful for you.

  19. Thank you for this ministry.

  20. But those of you who kind of remember back to your time as a child,

  21. and you remember those stories that you were taught,

  22. the themes that seem to stand out about those stories are those significant events.

  23. Those heroes of faith, those epic moments as it were,

  24. of people who are living for God and seeing great things take place.

  25. Maybe you remember Noah and the flood.

  26. Or you remember Abraham, he's offering his son Isaac on the altar.

  27. Maybe Joseph in his coat of many colors,

  28. or rising to a place of second in command in Egypt.

  29. Perhaps you might remember Moses leading the children of Israel out of bondage and slavery in Egypt.

  30. Or you remember David, of course, David in Goliath.

  31. Or Daniel in the fiery furnace.

  32. And there Daniel is in the lion's den.

  33. His friends were in the fiery furnace.

  34. And all of these epic stories of notable faith seem to stand out.

  35. Those characters, those themes, those men and women of the scripture

  36. who seem to have it all together.

  37. There seem to be a steadiness about their faith.

  38. There seem to be a resilience about them.

  39. They never seem to have a moment of failure.

  40. At least in these epic stories that we remember.

  41. And somewhere along the way, we come to be formed and fashioned by those stories.

  42. And we think that if we ever experience times of brokenness,

  43. times of doubt, times of failure, times of sorrow,

  44. times of bewilderment, times of hurt, times of pain,

  45. that somehow we're failing in some way.

  46. And those stories that have become so familiar to us now seem so distant.

  47. These men and women of the faith never seem to have baggage.

  48. They never seem to fail.

  49. They always seem to have it together in some way.

  50. And so when we evaluate our lives,

  51. we wonder if there's something wrong with our own understanding of the scripture,

  52. our own faith that we bring to the table.

  53. As children, what grabs our attention are those mountain peaks.

  54. We seem to forget that these are real people who are experiencing real pain.

  55. And that's what John, the gospel writer, wants to remind us of this morning.

  56. John does such an amazing job throughout his gospel,

  57. drawing attention to people.

  58. He draws attention to individuals.

  59. He wants you to see that there are people, real people,

  60. who have real struggles, who really need to be encouraged,

  61. who really need and have gone through hard things

  62. and really need to meet with Christ,

  63. who really need a Savior.

  64. And so we come this morning to John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  65. If you're there with me,

  66. I would encourage you to turn there if you're not there already.

  67. But what we find throughout the gospel of John,

  68. the purpose for his writing is to draw people to a Savior,

  69. to draw people to faith.

  70. He says in John chapter 20, verse 30, he says,

    John 20:30

  71. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples

  72. which are not written in this book,

  73. but these are written so that you may believe

  74. that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

  75. and that by believing, you may have life in his name.

  76. We saw last week as we were evaluating the triumphal entry

  77. that Jesus had come.

  78. He had come to Bethany.

  79. He had raised Lazarus from the dead.

  80. This amazing sign that demonstrated to a nation

  81. that Jesus was in fact the person he claimed to be.

  82. They've been looking for signs.

  83. They've been looking for the testimony,

  84. the convincing testimony that Jesus was in fact the Messiah.

  85. And so when Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead in this public way,

  86. so close to Jerusalem,

  87. at least in that moment, the nation received him.

  88. They agreed that he was this Messiah figure.

  89. The entire nation recognized him as this one.

  90. Whereas John chapter 12, verse 18 says,

    John 12:18

  91. The reason why the crowd went to meet him

  92. was that they heard that he had done this sign,

  93. this sign of raising Lazarus from the dead.

  94. And not only did the nation believe,

  95. but the religious leaders,

  96. they couldn't deny that something had happened.

  97. John 11, 47 says,

  98. So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council

  99. and said,

  100. What are we to do?

  101. For this man performs many signs.

  102. This nation celebrates the Messiah.

  103. The religious leaders are grumbling

  104. because Jesus had done this sign.

  105. And here is Lazarus right in their midst.

  106. This undeniable, unmistakable sign

  107. that Jesus was in fact the resurrection and the life.

  108. Jesus had power over life and death.

  109. But there was one more sign.

  110. One more sign that Jesus had promised.

  111. This ultimate sign as it were.

  112. This ultimate evidence that Jesus was

  113. not just a miracle worker.

  114. Not just a resurrection and a life for someone else.

  115. But that Jesus was in fact

  116. the one sent from God.

  117. The son of God himself.

  118. John chapter 2, verses 18 to 22.

    John 2:18–22

  119. This is the very beginning of Jesus' ministry.

  120. And he is foreshadowing this future work.

  121. This future sign.

  122. When he says,

  123. So the Jews said to him,

  124. What sign do you show us for doing these things?

  125. Jesus answered them,

  126. Destroy this temple,

  127. and in three days I will raise it up.

  128. The Jews then said,

  129. It has taken 46 years to build the temple,

  130. and you will raise it up in three days.

  131. But he was speaking about the temple of his body.

  132. When therefore he was raised from the dead,

  133. his disciples remembered that he had said this,

  134. and they believed the scriptures

  135. and the word that Jesus had spoken.

  136. Again,

  137. Jesus' resurrection from the dead

  138. proved once and for all

  139. that Jesus is the resurrection and the life.

  140. He is the Messiah.

  141. This final, epic, ultimate sign

  142. is what everyone was waiting for,

  143. everyone was looking for.

  144. And so John doesn't want to just take us

  145. to the empty tomb

  146. and expose us to the facts,

  147. to the details of the resurrection.

  148. He wants us to encounter a person.

  149. He wants us to encounter a Savior.

  150. He wants to welcome us,

  151. to evaluate for ourselves

  152. the evidence of the empty tomb,

  153. and not just be amazed

  154. at the details of a resurrection account,

  155. but to encounter the Savior himself,

  156. the one who has come to seek

  157. and to save the lost.

  158. So we find in John's account

  159. a focus on people.

  160. It's a different perspective

  161. that John wants to draw us to,

  162. looking at people,

  163. not just the events,

  164. because the resurrection

  165. changes everything.

  166. As we look this morning

  167. at the empty tomb,

  168. there are some lessons here

  169. for all of us,

  170. not just in looking

  171. and evaluating the account itself,

  172. but to be reminded

  173. of what the account

  174. is meant to do for us.

  175. It's inviting us to respond.

  176. How will we respond

  177. to the empty tomb?

  178. This morning,

  179. we're going to look at five ways

  180. that we need to respond.

  181. First,

  182. we need to come and see

  183. the empty tomb.

  184. Come and see the empty tomb.

  185. John begins with a very simple statement

  186. in verse 1 of chapter 20.

  187. He says this,

  188. Now,

  189. on the first day of the week,

  190. Mary Magdalene

  191. came to the tomb early

  192. while it was still dark

  193. and saw that the stone

  194. had been taken away

  195. from the tomb.

  196. One verse.

  197. One,

  198. a couple of phrases here

  199. that we find,

  200. and this is the resurrection account

  201. that's given to us by John.

  202. This resurrection account,

  203. simple to understand,

  204. so sparse in detail

  205. as you compare it

  206. to the other gospels,

  207. Matthew,

  208. Mark,

  209. and Luke.

  210. Mary came.

  211. It was dark.

  212. The stone was rolled away.

  213. That's it.

  214. And if we know

  215. the other gospel accounts,

  216. Matthew,

  217. Mark,

  218. and Luke,

  219. we understand

  220. how different this is.

  221. And John is doing this

  222. for a reason.

  223. Like,

  224. where are the other women,

  225. John?

  226. Where are the spices

  227. that are prepared?

  228. Where are the guards

  229. that were standing

  230. at the tomb?

  231. Where are the earthquake

  232. and the angels

  233. and the shining garments?

  234. Where is all of that,

  235. John?

  236. Where's the announcement

  237. he's not here?

  238. He's risen,

  239. just as he said.

  240. So Matthew,

  241. Mark,

  242. and Luke

  243. give us those details.

  244. Was John

  245. just confused?

  246. Was John

  247. just didn't understand

  248. the details

  249. of this account

  250. and forgot

  251. to capture it

  252. for us?

  253. No.

  254. John understood

  255. the details,

  256. but he wants

  257. to drive us

  258. to something.

  259. He wants us

  260. to see the personal

  261. element here.

  262. He is spotlighting

  263. individuals.

  264. He wants us

  265. to recognize

  266. that this

  267. resurrection account

  268. is for you.

  269. This resurrection story

  270. is for me.

  271. It's for us

  272. in this room.

  273. It's written

  274. for individuals

  275. so that we can come

  276. and believe

  277. who Jesus is.

  278. John is driving

  279. at this purpose

  280. and if we come

  281. to understand

  282. the rest of

  283. John's gospel

  284. account,

  285. we'll see all

  286. of these stories

  287. that are so specific

  288. to individuals.

  289. John is the only

  290. account that tells

  291. us about Andrew

  292. who brought

  293. his brother

  294. Peter to Christ.

  295. John is the only

  296. gospel record

  297. that talks about

  298. Philip who brings

  299. his brother Nathaniel

  300. to Christ.

  301. It's only in the

  302. gospel of John

  303. we see Nicodemus,

  304. the ruler of the Jews

  305. who meets Jesus

  306. by night.

  307. Where we see

  308. the Samaritan woman,

  309. the nobleman's son,

  310. the lame man

  311. who's at the pool

  312. of Bethesda,

  313. the woman who's

  314. caught in adultery,

  315. the man who's

  316. born blind,

  317. this raising of

  318. Lazarus from the dead,

  319. Thomas who will

  320. ask this question

  321. the night

  322. before Christ's

  323. crucifixion,

  324. and then this

  325. here in John

    John 20 chapter mention

  326. chapter 20.

  327. Mary Magdalene,

  328. a single

  329. lone individual

  330. who's here

  331. at the tomb.

  332. Jesus cares

  333. for individuals.

  334. And of course

  335. we understand

  336. that Jesus

  337. came for the world.

  338. We know

  339. for God so loved

  340. the world

  341. that he gave

  342. his only begotten

  343. son.

  344. And yet he came

  345. for individuals.

  346. Jesus came

  347. for Mary.

  348. And each of us

  349. are personally

  350. responsible

  351. for what we do

  352. with the news

  353. about Jesus.

  354. It's important

  355. here because

  356. in this opening

  357. scene,

  358. Mary's devotion

  359. is obvious,

  360. but it's still,

  361. her faith is

  362. still incomplete.

  363. She shows up

  364. early.

  365. She comes

  366. prepared.

  367. She demonstrates

  368. her loyalty.

  369. We see this

  370. overflow of love

  371. in this narrative,

  372. but for all

  373. of her devotion,

  374. we find

  375. her conclusion

  376. in verse 2.

  377. So she ran

  378. and went

  379. to Simon Peter

  380. and the other

  381. disciple,

  382. the one whom

  383. Jesus loved,

  384. and she said

  385. to them,

  386. they have taken

  387. the Lord

  388. out of the tomb

  389. and we do not

  390. know where they

  391. have laid him.

  392. For all of her

  393. devotion,

  394. she is still

  395. operating under

  396. the assumption

  397. that Jesus

  398. is dead.

  399. She's not

  400. expecting a

  401. resurrection.

  402. She's not

  403. looking for

  404. triumph.

  405. She's not

  406. standing in

  407. faith.

  408. And John

  409. is already

  410. reminding us

  411. of something

  412. that's really

  413. important,

  414. that for all

  415. the devotion

  416. that we bring

  417. to the table,

  418. it is

  419. insufficient

  420. in what

  421. Christ is

  422. offering,

  423. the faith

  424. and personal

  425. relationship

  426. that can only

  427. be true

  428. when we come

  429. to Christ

  430. in the right

  431. way.

  432. Mary acknowledged

  433. the empty

  434. tomb.

  435. Now she's

  436. invited Peter

  437. and John

  438. to do the

  439. same.

  440. She's

  441. come,

  442. she's

  443. seen for

  444. herself,

  445. she's spoken

  446. with Peter

  447. and John

  448. and we're

  449. going to

  450. find that

  451. they also

  452. come and

  453. they're going

  454. to see for

  455. themselves.

  456. And for all

  457. of us,

  458. we need to do

  459. the very same

  460. thing.

  461. We need to

  462. come and

  463. see.

  464. Come and

  465. see the

  466. empty tomb.

  467. Take a look

  468. for yourself.

  469. See the

  470. evidence that's

  471. in front of

  472. you,

  473. the tomb

  474. that still

  475. remains empty.

  476. Tomb that

  477. is a symbol

  478. and a

  479. stature of

  480. Christ who

  481. has been

  482. raised from

  483. the dead.

  484. This is the

  485. first step

  486. to the faith

  487. that God is

  488. inviting us

  489. to enjoy.

  490. Come and

  491. see.

  492. In verses

  493. 3 to 10

  494. we see

  495. this next

  496. step.

  497. The next

  498. step is to

  499. believe the

  500. testimony of

  501. the empty

  502. tomb.

  503. It says in

  504. verse 3,

  505. So Peter

  506. went out

  507. with the

  508. other

  509. disciple

  510. and they

  511. were going

  512. towards the

  513. tomb.

  514. Both of

  515. them were

  516. running

  517. together

  518. but the

  519. other

  520. disciple

  521. outran

  522. Peter

  523. and reached

  524. the tomb

  525. first.

  526. In stooping

  527. to look,

  528. he saw the

  529. linen cloths

  530. lying there

  531. but he

  532. did not

  533. go in.

  534. Then Simon

  535. Peter came

  536. following him

  537. and went

  538. into the

  539. tomb.

  540. He saw

  541. the linen

  542. cloths

  543. lying there

  544. and the

  545. face cloth

  546. which had

  547. been on

  548. Jesus'

  549. head.

  550. Not

  551. lying with

  552. the linen

  553. cloths but

  554. folded up

  555. in its

  556. place.

  557. Then the

  558. other

  559. disciple

  560. who had

  561. reached

  562. the tomb

  563. first also

  564. went in

  565. and he

  566. saw

  567. and believed

  568. for as yet

  569. he did not

  570. understand the

  571. scripture

  572. that he

  573. must rise

  574. from the

  575. dead.

  576. Then the

  577. disciples

  578. went back

  579. to their

  580. homes.

  581. Where Mary

  582. runs to

  583. tell Peter

  584. and John

  585. Peter and

  586. John

  587. then in

  588. turn

  589. make their

  590. way in

  591. hurry

  592. to the

  593. tomb.

  594. Now this

  595. was something

  596. that was

  597. very uncharacteristic

  598. in first

  599. century.

  600. Men

  601. in that

  602. day did

  603. not run.

  604. It was

  605. undignified.

  606. But this

  607. was not

  608. like any

  609. other day

  610. and this

  611. was not

  612. like any

  613. other news

  614. that they've

  615. heard.

  616. John

  617. we find

  618. outruns

  619. Peter.

  620. He gets

  621. to the

  622. tomb

  623. first but

  624. he stays

  625. there outside

  626. and he

  627. takes a

  628. look inside.

  629. But Peter

  630. as one

  631. might expect

  632. he bursts

  633. straight through

  634. he runs

  635. right in

  636. this boldness

  637. and he is

  638. unhindered.

  639. Here he is

  640. running into

  641. the tomb

  642. he wants

  643. to see

  644. things for

  645. himself.

  646. They observe

  647. the scene

  648. that Mary

  649. described.

  650. This stone

  651. that's rolled

  652. away,

  653. the linen

  654. cloths

  655. that are

  656. lying there,

  657. the face

  658. cloth that's

  659. been moved

  660. and folded

  661. and put

  662. away in a

  663. different place.

  664. Jesus is

  665. gone.

  666. But this

  667. is not the

  668. scene of a

  669. robbery.

  670. The cloths

  671. are not

  672. torn.

  673. They're not

  674. scattered.

  675. There's no

  676. sign of chaos.

  677. There's no

  678. sign of

  679. panic.

  680. There seems

  681. to be no

  682. sign that

  683. this body

  684. of Christ

  685. had been

  686. manhandled

  687. in any

  688. way and

  689. wrestled

  690. out of

  691. these grave

  692. clothes.

  693. No.

  694. There is

  695. order in

  696. calm.

  697. There's

  698. evidence

  699. that's

  700. here.

  701. But notice

  702. in verse

  703. 8 it

  704. says,

  705. the other

  706. disciple who

  707. reached the

  708. tomb first

  709. also went

  710. in and

  711. when he

  712. saw he

  713. believed.

  714. He

  715. believed.

  716. What did

  717. he believe?

  718. Well the

  719. next verse

  720. tells us a

  721. little broader

  722. picture of

  723. what he

  724. believed and

  725. helps us

  726. understand,

  727. for as yet

  728. they did not

  729. understand the

  730. scripture that

  731. he must rise

  732. from the

  733. dead.

  734. From these

  735. two verses

  736. we see that

  737. believing a

  738. truth or

  739. believing in

  740. a truth,

  741. believing in

  742. facts is not

  743. the same as

  744. believing in

  745. a savior.

  746. This is

  747. foundational to

  748. John.

  749. Some 98 to

  750. 102 times

  751. throughout the

  752. gospel of

  753. John,

  754. John will

  755. use the

  756. word believing.

  757. And yet in

  758. almost every

  759. case we

  760. find this

  761. believing is

  762. defective,

  763. it's deficient,

  764. it's devoid of

  765. something,

  766. of substance.

  767. And here is

  768. the same for

  769. John.

  770. He believed

  771. in facts.

  772. Jesus was

  773. not there but

  774. he needed to

  775. believe more.

  776. And his

  777. believing needed

  778. to be informed

  779. by the

  780. scripture.

  781. Notice,

  782. as yet they

  783. did not

  784. understand,

  785. the scripture

  786. that he must

  787. rise from the

  788. dead.

  789. Now that's

  790. important.

  791. Faith will

  792. need to include

  793. the most

  794. important piece.

  795. Not just that

  796. Jesus' body

  797. is missing,

  798. but that Jesus

  799. himself is

  800. risen.

  801. The empty

  802. tomb had

  803. confronted Mary

  804. and Peter

  805. and John

  806. and that's

  807. important because

  808. biblical faith is

  809. not irrational,

  810. it's rooted in

  811. evidence.

  812. But their faith

  813. needed to be

  814. informed by the

  815. word.

  816. God's word

  817. is true

  818. and because

  819. God's word

  820. is true,

  821. it rests

  822. in the

  823. evidence

  824. of the

  825. facts that

  826. God has

  827. assembled.

  828. The truth

  829. statements,

  830. the prophecies

  831. that Christ

  832. has given

  833. needed to be

  834. confirmed in

  835. order to know

  836. for a fact

  837. that Jesus

  838. had risen

  839. from the

  840. dead.

  841. On at least

  842. three occasions

  843. Jesus had

  844. prophesied,

  845. they're going

  846. to crucify me.

  847. They're going

  848. to scourge

  849. me.

  850. They're going

  851. to take

  852. me.

  853. They're going

  854. to kill

  855. me.

  856. But on the

  857. third day

  858. I'm going

  859. to rise.

  860. And those

  861. statements

  862. proved out

  863. true to the

  864. very end.

  865. And so the

  866. stone is

  867. moved,

  868. the body

  869. is gone,

  870. the grave

  871. clothes

  872. remain.

  873. And this

  874. ultimate piece

  875. of evidence,

  876. this ultimate

  877. sign of

  878. Jesus'

  879. resurrection

  880. is bearing

  881. out in front

  882. of them.

  883. But they

  884. need to

  885. understand that

  886. evidence is

  887. not enough.

  888. The evidence

  889. is not enough.

  890. They needed to

  891. understand the

  892. scriptures,

  893. they need to

  894. be exposed

  895. to the

  896. word of

  897. God,

  898. they need

  899. to be

  900. informed

  901. by the

  902. scriptures

  903. in order

  904. to be

  905. led to

  906. true faith.

  907. Faith only

  908. becomes

  909. complete when

  910. Christ allows

  911. us to

  912. understand the

  913. scriptures for

  914. itself.

  915. So we

  916. come and see

  917. the empty

  918. tomb.

  919. We believe

  920. the testimony

  921. of the

  922. empty

  923. tomb.

  924. Next,

  925. we bring

  926. our sorrow

  927. to the

  928. empty

  929. tomb.

  930. Bring your

  931. sorrow to

  932. the empty

  933. tomb.

  934. And so the

  935. events of

  936. Peter and

  937. John now

  938. shift again

  939. and the

  940. story turns

  941. and focuses

  942. again on

  943. Mary who

  944. becomes the

  945. main character

  946. of the

  947. narrative.

  948. And we

  949. see in

  950. her,

  951. in verse

  952. 11,

  953. Mary stood

  954. weeping

  955. outside the

  956. tomb.

  957. And as

  958. she wept,

  959. she stooped

  960. to look

  961. into the

  962. tomb.

  963. This word

  964. for weeping

  965. is used

  966. eight times

  967. throughout the

  968. gospel of

  969. John.

  970. Three times

  971. it's used

  972. during the

  973. narrative of

  974. Lazarus who

  975. was raised

  976. from the

  977. dead.

  978. Once it's

  979. used to

  980. describe the

  981. disciples in

  982. the upper

  983. room as

  984. Jesus is

  985. describing to

  986. them the

  987. weeping and

  988. the grief that

  989. they will

  990. experience at

  991. the loss of

  992. Jesus in

  993. his death.

  994. And now

  995. four times

  996. John focuses

  997. his attention

  998. on the

  999. weeping of

  1000. Mary here

  1001. at the

  1002. tomb.

  1003. It's a

  1004. word that

  1005. describes

  1006. anguished

  1007. crying or

  1008. wailing.

  1009. It was

  1010. something that

  1011. gripped an

  1012. individual.

  1013. It was this

  1014. external expression

  1015. of grief.

  1016. We find it in

  1017. verse 11,

  1018. Mary stood

  1019. weeping and

  1020. then as she

  1021. wept she

  1022. stooped looking

  1023. into the tomb.

  1024. Then in

  1025. verse 13

  1026. the angels

  1027. will ask

  1028. woman why

  1029. are you

  1030. weeping?

  1031. Then in

  1032. verse 15

  1033. Jesus himself

  1034. will ask

  1035. woman why

  1036. are you

  1037. weeping?

  1038. See Mary's

  1039. love for

  1040. Christ was

  1041. real.

  1042. She had

  1043. experienced

  1044. the liberating

  1045. power of

  1046. Christ for

  1047. herself.

  1048. She had

  1049. had seven

  1050. demons cast

  1051. out of her

  1052. during Christ's

  1053. ministry.

  1054. She experienced

  1055. real bondage and

  1056. real deliverance

  1057. from him.

  1058. Her name

  1059. Magdalene

  1060. was not a

  1061. family surname

  1062. but it

  1063. identified her

  1064. with a small

  1065. village fishing

  1066. community named

  1067. Magdala.

  1068. It was on the

  1069. northwest shore

  1070. of the Sea of

  1071. Galilee.

  1072. This region had

  1073. been particularly

  1074. gripped by

  1075. demonic activity

  1076. in Jesus as

  1077. he crisscrossed

  1078. the region of

  1079. Galilee.

  1080. What would often

  1081. be seen throughout

  1082. the narrative as

  1083. casting out demons

  1084. and liberating

  1085. those who had

  1086. been in bondage

  1087. to demons and

  1088. Mary was one

  1089. of those.

  1090. He had taught

  1091. there.

  1092. He had healed

  1093. there.

  1094. She had heard

  1095. Jesus teach

  1096. there.

  1097. She had heard

  1098. the preaching

  1099. of the kingdom

  1100. of God there.

  1101. And Mary was

  1102. not some random

  1103. face in the

  1104. crowd.

  1105. Mary had an

  1106. encounter with

  1107. Christ, a

  1108. friendship with

  1109. the Lord Jesus.

  1110. In Luke chapter

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  1111. 8 we find that

  1112. she was also a

  1113. faithful supporter

  1114. of Christ's

  1115. ministry.

  1116. Luke's account

  1117. lets us know

  1118. that she is

  1119. financially vested.

  1120. She along

  1121. with many other

  1122. women are

  1123. sponsoring Christ

  1124. as he is

  1125. carrying out

  1126. this public

  1127. ministry.

  1128. She's part of

  1129. the group who

  1130. also traveled

  1131. with the

  1132. disciples.

  1133. She's part of

  1134. the group that

  1135. was on this

  1136. pilgrimage as

  1137. this final

  1138. trek into

  1139. Jerusalem during

  1140. the time of

  1141. Passover.

  1142. It was Mary

  1143. Magdalene and

  1144. many other women

  1145. and the disciples

  1146. who would make

  1147. their way together

  1148. up to Jerusalem.

  1149. It's Mary

  1150. Magdalene who's

  1151. at the cross.

  1152. It's Mary

  1153. Magdalene, one

  1154. of the very few,

  1155. two ladies who

  1156. lingered long

  1157. enough at the

  1158. cross to see

  1159. where Christ

  1160. would be taken

  1161. and buried.

  1162. Mary Magdalene

  1163. would see that.

  1164. And here she is

  1165. again.

  1166. In her devotion

  1167. she's lingering

  1168. at the tomb.

  1169. Hanging on to the

  1170. moments and the

  1171. memories that she

  1172. had with this

  1173. one that she

  1174. cherished.

  1175. There's no wonder

  1176. why Mary is

  1177. crying.

  1178. Jesus was not a

  1179. distant figure to

  1180. her.

  1181. Jesus was one who

  1182. delivered her from

  1183. darkness, who had

  1184. given her dignity,

  1185. who had received her

  1186. devotion, who had

  1187. changed the entire

  1188. course of her life.

  1189. And now in her

  1190. mind he's gone.

  1191. Overcome by grief

  1192. she looks into the

  1193. tomb one more time.

  1194. Notice in verse

  1195. 11, Mary stood

  1196. weeping outside the

  1197. tomb and as she

  1198. wept she stooped to

  1199. look into the tomb

  1200. and she saw two

  1201. angels in white

  1202. sitting where the

  1203. body of Jesus had

  1204. lain.

  1205. One at the head

  1206. and one at the

  1207. feet.

  1208. They said to her

  1209. woman why are you

  1210. weeping?

  1211. She said to them

  1212. they have taken

1213. away my Lord and I

  1214. do not know where

  1215. they have laid him.

  1216. I don't know if

  1217. you've ever been

  1218. struck by these

  1219. verses but here

  1220. here's Mary Magdalene

  1221. she's looking at

  1222. angels.

  1223. They're there in the

  1224. tomb and she seems

  1225. to be totally

  1226. unfazed by their

  1227. presence.

  1228. How is that

  1229. possible?

  1230. Not surprised,

  1231. not startled,

  1232. not frightened,

  1233. just has this

  1234. blindness in her

  1235. heart.

  1236. She's overcome

  1237. by grief.

  1238. She cannot see

  1239. what's right in

  1240. front of her.

  1241. The grace of God

  1242. sending his angels

  1243. to minister to her

  1244. to give her hope

  1245. to let her know

  1246. about the risen

  1247. Lord and all she

  1248. can say is they've

  1249. taken the Lord out

1250. of the tomb and we

  1251. do not know where

  1252. they have laid him.

  1253. Then John gives us

  1254. one of the most

  1255. remarkable details in

  1256. all of the

  1257. resurrection narrative.

  1258. Verse 20 says

  1259. having said this

  1260. she turned around

  1261. and saw Jesus

  1262. standing but she

  1263. did not know that

  1264. it was Jesus.

  1265. Can you imagine?

  1266. Think of that.

  1267. She sees him.

  1268. She speaks to him

  1269. and she misses him.

1270. In spite of all the

  1271. personal experience

  1272. that Mary had had,

  1273. she had observed

  1274. his ministry,

  1275. she had heard his

  1276. teachings,

  1277. she had enjoyed

  1278. the benefits of

  1279. the deliverance

  1280. that he gave,

  1281. she had watched

  1282. his life,

  1283. she had stood

  1284. at the cross,

  1285. she was there

  1286. at the tomb,

  1287. she hears him

  1288. speak and she

  1289. misses him.

  1290. See that's how

  1291. deep human

  1292. blindness can be.

  1293. And that's why

  1294. salvation is never

  1295. merely the product

  1296. of nearness.

  1297. It's never merely

  1298. the product of

  1299. proximity.

  1300. It is always

  1301. a product of God

  1302. opening blind eyes.

  1303. See,

  1304. pay attention

  1305. to this now

  1306. work of Christ

  1307. in the response

  1308. of Christ

  1309. in verse 15.

  1310. woman,

  1311. why are you

  1312. weeping?

  1313. Whom are you

  1314. seeking?

  1315. I love the

  1316. tenderness of our

  1317. Savior.

  1318. We don't see

  1319. any harsh rebuke.

  1320. We don't see

  1321. the condescending

  1322. glare.

  1323. We don't see

  1324. the disapproval

  1325. or the disgust

  1326. in Christ's

  1327. response

  1328. to Mary.

  1329. But what you see

  1330. is compassion.

  1331. You see the

  1332. same Savior

  1333. who wept

  1334. with Mary

  1335. at the tomb

  1336. of Lazarus

  1337. and is now

  1338. entering into

  1339. the grief

  1340. of another

  1341. disciple,

  1342. another Mary

  1343. here at the

  1344. empty tomb.

  1345. The Lord is

  1346. not irritated

  1347. by weak

  1348. disciples.

  1349. Be blessed

  1350. that God

  1351. is not irritated

  1352. by weak

  1353. vacillating

  1354. disciples.

  1355. He is not

  1356. unmoved

  1357. by your tears.

  1358. He understands,

  1359. He cares,

  1360. His heart

  1361. is full of

  1362. compassion

  1363. for those

  1364. who are broken,

  1365. for those

  1366. who are hurting,

  1367. for those

  1368. who bring

  1369. their sorrow.

  1370. Bring your

  1371. sorrow,

  1372. your pain

  1373. to the Lord

  1374. Jesus.

  1375. He will

  1376. meet you

  1377. there.

  1378. See,

  1379. she knew

  1380. what Christ

  1381. had done.

  1382. She knew

  1383. the truths

  1384. that Christ

  1385. had shared.

  1386. She even

  1387. had recounted,

  1388. probably was able

  1389. to share

  1390. the verses

  1391. that Christ

  1392. was offering

  1393. her to understand.

  1394. And yet,

  1395. there's still

  1396. here in this

  1397. moment

  1398. confusion.

  1399. You see,

  1400. we might

  1401. know all

  1402. of the

  1403. theology,

  1404. we might

  1405. know all

  1406. the facts,

  1407. but unless

  1408. we come

  1409. to know

  1410. the person

  1411. of Christ,

  1412. we'll never

  1413. come to

  1414. enjoy salvation.

  1415. We learn

  1416. from Mary's

  1417. story that

  1418. the risen

  1419. Christ is

  1420. still full

  1421. of compassion

  1422. towards those

  1423. who carry

  1424. sorrow,

  1425. who carry

  1426. burdens.

  1427. So come

  1428. and see

  1429. this empty

  1430. tomb.

  1431. Believe

  1432. in the

  1433. testimony

  1434. of the

  1435. empty

  1436. tomb.

  1437. Bring

  1438. your sorrow

  1439. to the

  1440. empty

  1441. tomb.

  1442. But this,

  1443. perhaps most

  1444. important,

  1445. meet your

  1446. Savior at

  1447. the empty

  1448. tomb.

  1449. We see

  1450. this in

  1451. verse 16,

  1452. but the end

  1453. of verse 15

  1454. says,

  1455. supposing him

  1456. to be the

  1457. gardener,

  1458. she said to

  1459. him,

  1460. Sir,

  1461. if you have

  1462. carried him

  1463. away,

  1464. tell me

  1465. where you

  1466. have laid

  1467. him,

  1468. and I

  1469. will take

  1470. him away.

  1471. Jesus

  1472. said to

  1473. her,

  1474. Mary.

  1475. She

  1476. turned and

  1477. said to

  1478. him in

  1479. Aramaic,

  1480. Rabboni,

  1481. which means

  1482. teacher.

  1483. One word

  1484. is all

  1485. it took,

  1486. Mary.

  1487. He says

  1488. her name,

  1489. and with

  1490. this one

  1491. word,

  1492. the darkness

  1493. breaks,

  1494. the confusion

  1495. lifts,

  1496. the blindness

  1497. turns to

  1498. sight,

  1499. and the sorrow

  1500. gives way to

  1501. recognition.

  1502. What was it

  1503. about this

  1504. one word?

  1505. And I

  1506. think there

  1507. are two

  1508. reasons why

  1509. this word

  1510. was so

  1511. important.

  1512. first is

  1513. because we

  1514. need to

  1515. hear the

  1516. word of

  1517. God to

  1518. be changed

  1519. by the

  1520. word.

  1521. You know

  1522. what Paul

  1523. says in

  1524. Romans

    Romans 10:17

  1525. chapter 10

  1526. verse 17?

  1527. He says

  1528. faith comes

  1529. by hearing

  1530. and hearing

  1531. by the

  1532. word of

  1533. Christ.

  1534. Mary,

  1535. like the

  1536. disciples,

  1537. needed to

  1538. be informed

  1539. by the

  1540. scriptures.

  1541. Sometimes a

  1542. very simple

  1543. word,

  1544. Mary,

  1545. brought the

  1546. rest of

  1547. his words

  1548. come flooding

  1549. back to

  1550. her memory.

  1551. She needed

  1552. to hear the

  1553. word of

  1554. Christ.

  1555. And second,

  1556. she needed

  1557. to hear a

  1558. word that

  1559. was personal

  1560. to her.

  1561. The Lord

  1562. knew her

  1563. name.

  1564. He said

  1565. it in

  1566. only the

  1567. way that

  1568. the Savior

  1569. could say

  1570. it.

  1571. It reminds

  1572. me of what

  1573. Christ says

  1574. of him

  1575. being the

  1576. good shepherd

  1577. in John

    John 10 chapter mention

  1578. chapter 10.

  1579. He says

  1580. this,

  1581. he who

  1582. enters by

  1583. the door

  1584. is the

  1585. shepherd of

  1586. the sheep.

  1587. The sheep

  1588. hear his

  1589. voice and

  1590. he calls

  1591. his own

  1592. sheep by

  1593. name.

  1594. He goes

  1595. before them

  1596. and the

  1597. sheep follow

  1598. him for

  1599. they know

  1600. his voice.

  1601. I am the

  1602. good shepherd.

  1603. I know

  1604. my own

  1605. and my

  1606. own

  1607. know me.

  1608. This was

  1609. not just

  1610. mere

  1611. recognition

  1612. of Mary.

  1613. This is

  1614. revelation.

  1615. She sees

  1616. Jesus for

  1617. who he is

  1618. and the

  1619. good shepherd

  1620. called her

  1621. by name

  1622. and she

  1623. understood

  1624. his voice.

  1625. What happened

  1626. for Mary

  1627. is what

  1628. must happen

  1629. for every

  1630. one of

  1631. us at

  1632. some point

  1633. because the

  1634. gospel is

  1635. meant to be

  1636. personal.

  1637. It's meant

  1638. to be

  1639. individual.

  1640. It's meant

  1641. to call

  1642. you as

  1643. an individual.

  1644. Not merely

  1645. the subject

  1646. of stories.

  1647. He's not

  1648. merely the

  1649. object of

  1650. admiration.

  1651. He's not

  1652. merely the

  1653. center of

  1654. arguments but

  1655. he must

  1656. be known.

  1657. He must

  1658. be heard.

  1659. He must

  1660. be worshipped.

  1661. This is why

  1662. the resurrection

  1663. matters so

  1664. deeply because

  1665. it not just

  1666. proves that

  1667. his death

  1668. and resurrection

  1669. were real but

  1670. it proves that

  1671. he offers

  1672. life.

  1673. He offers

  1674. life to

  1675. everyone who

  1676. will believe

  1677. in his

  1678. name.

  1679. He will

  1680. come to

  1681. understand what

  1682. he has come

  1683. to offer.

  1684. And Mary

  1685. here is

  1686. delivered again.

  1687. She was

  1688. delivered first

  1689. from the

  1690. bondage of

  1691. demons.

  1692. Then she

  1693. was delivered

  1694. from the

  1695. bondage of

  1696. sin.

  1697. She is

  1698. enjoying the

  1699. benefits of

  1700. faith.

  1701. Faith has

  1702. become sight

  1703. and it now

  1704. leads her one

  1705. more step.

  1706. It's one more

  1707. step we find

  1708. in verses

  1709. 17 and

  1710. 18.

  1711. Share the

  1712. news of

  1713. the empty

  1714. tomb.

  1715. Share the

  1716. news of

  1717. the empty

  1718. tomb.

  1719. Find in

  1720. verse 17

  1721. Jesus said

  1722. to her,

  1723. Do not

  1724. cling to

  1725. me for

  1726. I have

  1727. not yet

  1728. ascended to

  1729. the father

  1730. but go to

  1731. my brothers

  1732. and say to

  1733. them I am

  1734. ascending to

  1735. my father

  1736. and to

  1737. your father

  1738. to my

  1739. God and

  1740. to your

  1741. God.

  1742. Mary Magdalene

  1743. went and

  1744. announced to

  1745. the disciples

  1746. I have seen

  1747. the Lord

  1748. and that he

  1749. has said

  1750. these things

  1751. to her.

  1752. Mary doesn't

  1753. want to let

  1754. Jesus go.

  1755. She is

  1756. clinging to

  1757. him for

  1758. all she is

  1759. worth.

  1760. She doesn't

  1761. want to

  1762. lose him.

  1763. But Jesus

  1764. wants to

  1765. redirect Mary's

  1766. focus.

  1767. Wants to

  1768. help her

  1769. understand the

  1770. whole purpose

  1771. of his

  1772. coming.

  1773. He says

  1774. I am

  1775. ascending to

  1776. my father.

  1777. Mary I'm

  1778. not staying.

  1779. I never

  1780. planned to

  1781. stick around.

  1782. I'm departing

  1783. just like I

  1784. told the

  1785. disciples that

  1786. the whole

  1787. purpose for

  1788. me coming

  1789. and dying

  1790. and rising

  1791. again is

  1792. not so that

  1793. I would be

  1794. a permanent

  1795. fixture here

  1796. but that

  1797. you would

  1798. be able to

  1799. enjoy the

  1800. benefits of

  1801. the indwelling

  1802. Holy Spirit.

  1803. The Spirit's

  1804. presence will

  1805. be among you.

  1806. Look to

  1807. him.

  1808. So don't

  1809. relate to me

  1810. as though

  1811. things are

  1812. simply going

  1813. back to

  1814. how they

  1815. were.

  1816. My death

  1817. and resurrection

  1818. have changed

  1819. everything Mary.

  1820. Understand

  1821. things are

  1822. different now.

  1823. Don't set

  1824. your hope

  1825. merely on

  1826. my physical

  1827. presence but

  1828. understand the

  1829. greater spiritual

  1830. reality that

  1831. is possible

  1832. because of

  1833. what I've

  1834. accomplished

  1835. for you.

  1836. A greater

  1837. presence,

  1838. an indwelling

  1839. presence.

  1840. Mary recognize

  1841. the wonder

  1842. of that.

  1843. And now

  1844. this relationship

  1845. that's changed

  1846. notice how

  1847. Jesus says

  1848. go and tell

  1849. my brothers.

  1850. That is

  1851. striking because

  1852. before he

  1853. had called

  1854. them the

  1855. twelve.

  1856. The disciples

  1857. were the

  1858. twelve.

  1859. Or they

  1860. were little

  1861. children.

  1862. Or they

  1863. were servants.

  1864. Or they

  1865. were friends.

  1866. But now

  1867. Jesus is

  1868. referring to

  1869. them as

  1870. brothers because

  1871. everything has

  1872. changed.

  1873. He describes

  1874. this now

  1875. profound

  1876. identity that

  1877. they can

  1878. enjoy because

  1879. of what

  1880. Christ has

  1881. accomplished.

  1882. I am

  1883. ascending to

  1884. my father

  1885. and to

  1886. your father

  1887. to my

  1888. God and

  1889. your God.

  1890. There's now

  1891. this personal

  1892. nature.

  1893. this shared

  1894. relationship

  1895. that we

  1896. get to

  1897. enjoy.

  1898. This new

  1899. identity

  1900. that's

  1901. possible

  1902. because of

  1903. Christ.

  1904. Of what

  1905. he's

  1906. accomplished.

  1907. He's your

  1908. God now.

  1909. He's your

  1910. father now.

  1911. The wall

  1912. has been

  1913. torn down.

  1914. The veil

  1915. has been

  1916. ripped in

  1917. two.

  1918. Access

  1919. to the

  1920. Lord is

  1921. now possible

  1922. for those

  1923. who believe

  1924. in him.

  1925. In this

  1926. new saving

  1927. faith it

  1928. will do

  1929. something.

  1930. Well what

  1931. does it

  1932. do?

  1933. Well it

  1934. sends

  1935. them.

  1936. Notice

  1937. Mary is

  1938. sent.

  1939. Jesus

  1940. commands

  1941. her go

  1942. to my

  1943. brothers

  1944. and say

  1945. to them

  1946. Mary go

  1947. and tell.

  1948. Tell them

  1949. everything

  1950. that you've

  1951. heard.

  1952. This is the

  1953. beginning of

  1954. the promise

  1955. of what we'll

  1956. see as now

  1957. we turn the

  1958. page to this

  1959. church.

  1960. This church

  1961. age we've

  1962. been studying

  1963. over the

  1964. past couple

  1965. of weeks.

  1966. The death

  1967. and resurrection

  1968. of Christ

  1969. has changed

  1970. everything for

  1971. us.

  1972. Remember this

  1973. promise in

  1974. Acts chapter

    Acts 1:8

  1975. 1 verse

  1976. 8.

  1977. You will

  1978. receive power

  1979. when the

  1980. Holy Spirit

  1981. has come

  1982. upon you

  1983. and you

  1984. will be

  1985. my witnesses.

  1986. This

  1987. twofold

  1988. promise of

  1989. what will be

  1990. accomplished for

  1991. those who

  1992. believe in

  1993. Jesus.

  1994. This

  1995. indwelling

  1996. power you

  1997. will receive.

  1998. This

  1999. mission now

  2000. you will be

  2001. witnesses and

  2002. Mary now

  2003. becomes this

  2004. first witness.

  2005. witness.

  2006. Mary obeys.

  2007. We find that

  2008. in verse 18.

  2009. Mary Magdalene

  2010. went and

  2011. announced to

  2012. the disciples

  2013. I have seen

  2014. the Lord.

  2015. And what a

  2016. beautiful thing

  2017. it is that

  2018. Jesus now

  2019. uses Mary

  2020. as this

  2021. first mouthpiece

  2022. of this gospel

  2023. message that's

  2024. being shared

  2025. now to the

  2026. disciples and

  2027. will now make

  2028. its way as we

  2029. find we turn

  2030. the page to

  2031. the book of

  2032. Acts.

  2033. We'll make

  2034. its way to

  2035. Jerusalem and

  2036. to Judea and

  2037. Samaria and

  2038. the uttermost

  2039. parts of

  2040. the earth.

  2041. We are

  2042. beneficiaries of

  2043. this gospel

  2044. witness that

  2045. started because

  2046. of Christ

  2047. encouraging Mary

  2048. to be in the

  2049. first in line

  2050. to share this

  2051. amazing message

  2052. of the risen

  2053. savior.

  2054. One who had

  2055. been bound by

  2056. demons is now

  2057. freed.

  2058. Freed by the

  2059. resurrection and

  2060. the life.

  2061. So what lessons

  2062. do we learn?

  2063. What lessons do

  2064. we need to

  2065. take to heart?

  2066. Well first we

  2067. need to come

  2068. and see.

  2069. See the gospel

  2070. of John has

  2071. been intensely

  2072. personal.

  2073. It requires a

  2074. personal decision.

  2075. No one can

  2076. make a decision

  2077. of faith for

  2078. you.

  2079. No one else's

  2080. faith can be

  2081. credited to your

  2082. account.

  2083. You must

  2084. believe.

  2085. You must

  2086. confess.

  2087. You must

  2088. worship the

  2089. Lord for

  2090. yourself.

  2091. You cannot

  2092. rest in your

  2093. devotion.

  2094. You must

  2095. hope in the

  2096. savior.

  2097. Second believe

  2098. the testimony.

  2099. The resurrection

  2100. has been

  2101. attested to

  2102. and the empty

  2103. tomb remains

  2104. empty today.

  2105. The grave

  2106. clothes were

  2107. there.

  2108. The eyewitnesses

  2109. testimonies were

  2110. given.

  2111. The works of

  2112. Christ attested

  2113. to the divinity

  2114. and identity

  2115. of who he was.

  2116. The signs

  2117. that Christ

  2118. promised

  2119. were given

  2120. so that you

  2121. might believe.

  2122. And that those

  2123. who were closest

  2124. to him,

  2125. Mary,

  2126. the disciples,

  2127. and then 500

  2128. that would see

  2129. Jesus in

  2130. Galilee,

  2131. we find in

  2132. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  2133. chapter 15,

  2134. they all gave

  2135. and bore

  2136. witness to the

  2137. credibility of

  2138. this message.

  2139. The risen Lord

  2140. had in fact

  2141. risen from the

  2142. dead.

  2143. Believe the

  2144. testimony.

  2145. You see,

  2146. Christianity is

  2147. not built on

  2148. wishful thinking.

  2149. it's actually

  2150. built on

  2151. grounded,

  2152. testifiable

  2153. facts that

  2154. God has given

  2155. to us.

  2156. This historic

  2157. triumph of

  2158. Jesus Christ.

  2159. We learn the

  2160. lesson of being

  2161. able to bring

  2162. our sorrow.

  2163. Bring our sorrow

  2164. to him.

  2165. We see in

  2166. Jesus one who

  2167. sympathizes with

  2168. sorrow.

  2169. He has been

  2170. touched with the

  2171. feelings of our

  2172. infirmities.

  2173. His compassion

  2174. is real.

  2175. And some of you

  2176. this morning

  2177. may need to be

  2178. encouraged by the

  2179. fact that Jesus

  2180. cares about your

  2181. hurt and your

  2182. pain.

  2183. Jesus can

  2184. sympathize with

  2185. the heartbreak

  2186. that maybe you

  2187. are experiencing

  2188. even now.

  2189. Maybe you're

  2190. weary.

  2191. Maybe your

  2192. emotions are

  2193. raw.

  2194. Maybe you have

  2195. felt the

  2196. injustice of

  2197. those around

  2198. you.

  2199. Maybe life

  2200. has been

  2201. very, very

  2202. hard and

  2203. Jesus cares.

  2204. Bring your

  2205. sorrow to

  2206. him.

  2207. Remember Mary

  2208. at the tomb.

  2209. Jesus did not

  2210. shame her.

  2211. He met her.

  2212. He spoke her

  2213. name.

  2214. He called her

  2215. to himself.

  2216. And he invites

  2217. her to enjoy

  2218. fellowship with

  2219. him through

  2220. Christ.

  2221. The same kind

  2222. of fellowship

  2223. that we can

  2224. experience as we

  2225. bring our sorrow

  2226. to Christ.

  2227. Fourth, we need

  2228. to meet our

  2229. Savior.

  2230. Jesus stands

  2231. ready to save.

  2232. He stands

  2233. ready to save.

  2234. The Son of

  2235. Man has

  2236. come to

  2237. seek and

  2238. to save

  2239. those who

  2240. are lost.

  2241. Are you lost

  2242. this morning?

  2243. Jesus wants

  2244. to save you.

  2245. He wants to

  2246. be your

  2247. Savior, your

  2248. deliverer.

  2249. He wants

  2250. to unlock

  2251. the door of

  2252. your heart

  2253. and let you

  2254. experience the

  2255. freedom that

  2256. only comes

  2257. through knowing

  2258. and experiencing

  2259. Christ.

  2260. He wants

  2261. to save.

  2262. And this,

  2263. he's the only

  2264. means of rescue.

  2265. He's not a

  2266. backup plan.

  2267. He's not life

  2268. insurance as it

  2269. were.

  2270. He's not one

  2271. of many

  2272. possibilities.

  2273. Cast yourself

  2274. entirely on

  2275. him.

  2276. Abandon

  2277. self-rescue.

  2278. Reject every

  2279. other promise

  2280. of deliverance

  2281. Jesus alone

  2282. can save.

  2283. Finally,

  2284. share the

  2285. news.

  2286. Share the

  2287. news.

  2288. I'm struck

  2289. with Christ's

  2290. two-fold promise

  2291. here.

  2292. You will be

  2293. filled.

  2294. You will

  2295. receive power

  2296. and you

  2297. will be

  2298. witnesses.

  2299. Those who

  2300. believe in

  2301. Christ will

  2302. be changed.

  2303. And one of

  2304. the greatest

  2305. ways for us

  2306. to understand

  2307. and see the

  2308. change that

  2309. Christ has

  2310. produced in

  2311. us is that

  2312. now we can't

  2313. help but speak

  2314. about what

  2315. he's done.

  2316. I'm reminded

  2317. we're those

  2318. who proclaim

  2319. the praises

  2320. of him,

  2321. who called

  2322. us out of

  2323. darkness,

  2324. into his

  2325. marvelous

  2326. light.

  2327. We can't

  2328. help it

  2329. because the

  2330. spirit indwells

  2331. us and

  2332. makes us

  2333. witnesses.

  2334. It's one

  2335. of the

  2336. beautiful

  2337. confirming

  2338. signs that

  2339. you belong

  2340. to him.

  2341. It's you

  2342. delight in

  2343. speaking about

  2344. him.

  2345. So what do

  2346. we do with

  2347. this?

  2348. Well, we

  2349. don't stand

  2350. at the empty

  2351. tomb nearly as

  2352. observers today.

  2353. we're not

  2354. to admire

  2355. this story

  2356. from a

  2357. distance.

  2358. We're not

  2359. to be content

  2360. with devotion

  2361. that never

  2362. becomes real

  2363. enduring faith.

  2364. We're not

  2365. to settle

  2366. for religious

  2367. familiarity

  2368. without a

  2369. personal trust

  2370. in Jesus

  2371. Christ.

  2372. We don't

  2373. celebrate the

  2374. sign of

  2375. his resurrection

  2376. while refusing

  2377. the Savior

  2378. himself.

  2379. Come to

  2380. the risen

  2381. Christ.

  2382. And like

  2383. Mary, go

  2384. and tell.

  2385. There is a

  2386. world full

  2387. of weeping

  2388. people in

  2389. empty places.

  2390. Be changed.

  2391. Allow the

  2392. miracle of

  2393. Christ's

  2394. resurrection

  2395. to activate

  2396. in your life

  2397. a message,

  2398. a witness

  2399. of change

  2400. of what

  2401. Christ has

  2402. accomplished.

  2403. Let's pray.

  2404. Father,

  2405. thank you

  2406. for this

  2407. amazing work,

  2408. this final

  2409. sign that

  2410. Christ is

  2411. in fact

  2412. the one

  2413. who raised

  2414. from the

  2415. dead.

  2416. And Father,

  2417. I pray that

  2418. you would

  2419. not just

  2420. lead us

  2421. into faith,

  2422. but that

  2423. you would

  2424. help us

  2425. to be a

  2426. mouthpiece

  2427. of the

  2428. message so

  2429. that others

  2430. can enjoy

  2431. the faith

  2432. that you

  2433. offer.

  2434. Thank you

  2435. that you

  2436. are the

  2437. seeking

  2438. Savior.

  2439. You've

  2440. come to

  2441. seek and

  2442. to save

  2443. those who

  2444. are lost.

  2445. And Lord,

  2446. this morning,

  2447. if there's

  2448. anybody who

  2449. does not

  2450. know you

  2451. as their

  2452. Savior,

  2453. I pray that

  2454. they would

  2455. find someone

  2456. that they

  2457. know who

  2458. loves you,

  2459. who can

  2460. share with

  2461. them how

  2462. to have a

  2463. relationship

  2464. with you.

  2465. Don't let

  2466. them go away

  2467. without knowing

  2468. the Savior

  2469. themselves.

  2470. Pray these

  2471. things in

  2472. Jesus' name.

  2473. Amen.
