  1. I want to encourage you to open up your Bibles, if you would please, to Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  2. ! Acts chapter 2, we're continuing our study as we look at this church, the new church that has begun

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  3. ! in the book of Acts. If you're using the Pew Bible, I would encourage you to turn to page 911,

  4. so you can find us there. We have been moving through this book together, and we plan to continue

  5. this study working through the book of Acts. I imagine it's going to take some time, but as we

  6. continue to discover God's work in revealing himself to us through his word and helping us to

  7. understand what the church means, that we as his church will be not only more informed, but will be

  8. those who are better representatives of Christ himself. The story, or I should say the account

  9. of the book of Acts, begins in Acts chapter 1, as the disciples are there with the Lord and Savior,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  10. Jesus Christ. What I absolutely love about the beginning of this movement, this church age, and

  11. any of you who know about the church, anyone who is familiar with this work of God in this church,

  12. will understand the epic nature of what Christ has accomplished. That Jerusalem, it started there.

  13. It moved to Judea and Samaria and the ends of the earth. You and I are beneficiaries of a work that

  14. started 2,000 years ago in Jerusalem. It might be easy to be overwhelmed. Overwhelmed by the sense,

  15. the scale of what the church really means. It has gone through every age and is a part of every time

  16. from the time of Christ to now, and it's spread across the globe. Maybe it's easy for us to be

  17. overwhelmed until we come back to how it all started and we remember the nature of how things began.

  18. Remember that Jesus gave his disciples two very simple commands. He said,

  19. go to Jerusalem and wait for the Spirit. Two simple commands is what started this epic age

  20. that we get to call the church. This new work of God in establishing a people to himself,

  21. not just Jews, but also including the Gentiles. And remember the promise that Jesus gave to the

  22. disciples if they would obey. Acts chapter 1, 8, there's two of them. It says, you will receive

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  23. power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses. Now, so what do the disciples do?

  24. So they go back to Jerusalem, just as Jesus has said, and they wait, just as Jesus has said. And the

  25. fulfillment of God's promise through his son Jesus happened exactly as Jesus had said. Ten days later,

  26. when they go to Jerusalem, ten days later, there is a time of Pentecost, and the Holy Spirit comes and

  27. dwells his people and turns them into witnesses. He makes them witnesses. This was a time of Pentecost.

  28. This is one of three times throughout the Jewish calendar when every Jewish male was supposed to

  29. come to Jerusalem, was supposed to give their offerings in the temple. It was a way for them

  30. to worship, a way for them to demonstrate their commitment to the Lord. Well, in this time of

  31. Pentecost, on this day in Jerusalem in Acts chapter 2, we find that there are at least 16 different

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  32. nations that are represented from across the Roman Empire, in as many as 18 different languages or more

  33. that are represented. How in the world will this message go forth? How in the world will God begin

  34. to start this church movement? What's going to happen through the work of his Holy Spirit? And that's

  35. where I find incredible relief and comfort. You see, we find here, even at the beginning of this

  36. church movement, that the beginning of the church does not rest on gifted leaders. It doesn't rest on

  37. those who know everything there is to know about doctrine. It doesn't rest on individuals who bring

  38. their charisma, who bring their vision, who bring their purpose, who can stimulate the crowd and can

  39. pump them up so that a church is born. No, a church rests entirely upon the person of Jesus Christ.

  40. It rests upon his word, obedience to his name, because Jesus himself has said, I will build my church

  41. and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. And so these believers go out in the power of the

  42. Holy Spirit. They speak. And what we find in Acts chapter 2 verse 11 is this. We hear them telling in

    Acts 2:11

  43. our own tongues the mighty works of God. Did you get that? They speak the works of God.

  44. It's not just the gospel. It's not just doctrines. It's not just teaching. It is simply a goal of exalting

  45. the name of the Lord Jesus. It's lifting up his mighty works. It's helping those in Jerusalem to

  46. recognize the wonder of who he is, to testify to the glory of God. It begins, the church age begins

  47. with a tension that is drawn to the wonder of who God is, his glory. And so that's where we began our

  48. study by understanding the wonder of the glory of God and recognizing that if we're going to be God's

  49. people, we too need to come to appreciate and understand God's glory. So what is glory? Well,

  50. we defined it this way. We said God's glory is the visible manifestation of God's presence, power,

  51. and authority. It's how you know that God is near. It's how you know what God has said. It's how you

  52. know that God is in control. And so as we come to understand and see the glory of God, we come to

  53. appreciate that his glory is written everywhere that we look because the heavens declare the glory of God.

  54. You look into the heavens, you see the stars, you see the handiwork of what he has made in the

  55. mountains, in the trees, and all the beauty of spring especially, the flowers that are blooming,

  56. and you begin to understand the glory of God is evident in the things that he has made.

  57. But then this, the greatest blessing of the Christian life is to come and have a personal

  58. experience with the glory of God ourselves. In 2 Corinthians chapter 4 verse 6, it says this,

    2 Corinthians 4:6

  59. for God who said, let light shine out of darkness has shown in our hearts to give the light of the

  60. knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. So it was the glory of God on display here

  61. in Acts chapter 2. We hear them telling the mighty works of God. The glory of God is pushed to the

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  62. forefront in the face of the face of the face of the face of the face of the face of the face of the

  63. God. The glory of God is pushed to the face of the face of the face of the face of the face of the face of the

  64. glory, speaking and confessing and witnessing to the glory of God. So then in Acts chapter 2 verse 21,

    Acts 2:21

  65. it says, it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

  66. That's the focal point of their message. The focal point of their message is to draw

  67. the listeners into wonder of who God is. To welcome them and invite them to enjoy

  68. the glory of God for themselves and to do it by believing or calling upon his name so that they too

  69. may have this experience of salvation and deliverance. I wonder this morning, do you know the son?

  70. The son who the believers on that day of Pentecost were speaking about,

  71. the mighty works of God, confessing the wonder of who he is and directing hearts to see the son.

  72. I wonder this morning, have you called on the name of the Lord to enjoy salvation for yourself?

  73. You see, that's where Peter begins his message and we see in the next several verses, beginning in

  74. verse 22, going on to verse 24, that Peter will now speak about the son. He'll speak about the son being

  75. fully man. He'll speak about the son being fully God. He'll speak about the son's death, his resurrection,

  76. and the son being exalted to the right hand of the father. He preaches about Christ. And 3,000 souls

  77. now respond to the message as we continue to work our way through Acts chapter 2. They respond to the

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  78. message, not in a way that is simply acknowledging the truth that they've heard, but they recognize

  79. that the truth that has been spoken, now they're responsible to respond to this truth. So what do

  80. they do? They repent. They see their sin. They repent from their sin. And they're baptized as an expression,

  81. a way to demonstrate that the work of Christ, his death, his resurrection, is now a work that is

  82. illustrated in their own lives as well, as they come to be baptized. This is what Jesus had prayed

  83. for the night before his crucifixion. He's prayed for a community of believers. He's prayed for

  84. souls of those who would come to faith in him and would be now one with him because of his work

  85. on the cross. John chapter 17 verses 20 and 21 says this. This is Jesus' prayer. He says,

    John 17:20

  86. I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word,

  87. that they might be one just as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us,

  88. so that the world may believe that you have sent me. You see, a church was born. But why does the

  89. church exist? What is the purpose of the church? And that's now where we turn our attention

  90. beginning in verses 42, moving on to verse 47. Luke will answer this question here in the book of

  91. Acts, not by giving us a brochure and kind of telling us all about it, but he's going to give

  92. us a picture, a picture of a people, a people who have been changed, a people who have been brought

  93. together, a people who are now unified and are expressing that oneness as we work our way through

  94. these next several verses. But before we get there, I want to just draw your attention to this fourfold

  95. purpose that we're going to begin to see unpacked as we make our way through these verses.

  96. This fourfold purpose is what God has called every believer to be part of. And you can see the

  97. banners behind me that we have bow, build, bless, and belong. But these represent the four priorities

  98. that God has given to every believer, and especially believers who are gathered as a church to fulfill

  99. the mission that God has called us to. The purpose of worship that we'll talk about in just a moment.

  100. The purpose of discipleship, which we'll also talk about next week. The purpose of evangelism,

  101. and then the purpose of our fellowship or our unity. All of these things, these pieces,

  102. are a part of the priorities that God has given to us as a church and should be true in the lives

  103. of every believer. So what are these fourfold purposes? Well, let me just touch on them and then

  104. we'll concentrate this morning on worship. But first, worship. Worship. We've said that

  105. worship, we kind of want to make this memorable. So we have compared worship with bow or to bow your

  106. heart in worship to God. Of course, God has created us for worship. That those who have come to a place

  107. of recognizing the glory of God, the worthiness of God, it should immediately bring them to the point

  108. of recognizing not only his worth, but in bowing, in worship, in reverence, in devotion to him.

  109. We see that in Romans chapter 12, verse 1, where Paul will say,

    Romans 12:1

  110. I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as living sacrifices,

  111. holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Those of us who have enjoyed the benefits

  112. of salvation. Those of us who have come to terms with the mercies of God. That while we are sinners

  113. and because of our sin, we are hostile and enemies against God. That God still sent his son to us to

  114. demonstrate his love. To Jesus, as Jesus walks in obedient life, and then he lays down his life

  115. to pay for sin so that we can enjoy the benefits of his sacrifice and we can be forgiven.

  116. Those who understand what Christ has done, his mercy for us, should be the first in line to worship him.

  117. This is our reasonable worship, our spiritual worship that those of us who have come to faith

  118. in Jesus Christ will do. This is what we were made for. So what is worship? Well, what we have said

  119. that worship is living with a spotlight on Jesus. It's living with a spotlight on Jesus. And so it's

  120. not just when you come to a morning service once a week that you come to worship. No, worship is meant

  121. to be the expression of every part of every day. It's meant to fill the totality of your life. Every sphere

  122. in which you live is meant to be a sphere in which you worship. Our work should be worship. Our family time

  123. should be worship. Our leisure should be worship. Our sports activities, our academics, our time at school,

  124. our gardening. Whatever we do is meant to draw us into a greater affection and a greater love for the Lord Jesus.

  125. I love how the Apostle Paul puts it in 1 Corinthians 10 31 where he says, whether you eat or drink or whatever

  126. you do, do all to the glory of God. That is worship. Recognizing the worthiness of God and bowing before him

  127. in worship. The Apostle Paul expresses this well in Philippians 1 21. You have that at the bottom of this slide.

  128. For me to live is Christ and to die is gain. So we recognize that every part of life is meant to draw us

  129. deeper in love with Jesus and to put his life and his message on display so that others can see it as well.

  130. Worship. The next is discipleship. And if worship is bow, then discipleship is build for us.

  131. It's leading every person one step closer to Jesus.

  132. Leading every person one step closer to Jesus.

  133. And my guess is this morning

  134. that we think about, when we think about making disciples,

  135. disciples, my guess is that maybe you relate, you are familiar with a program, something formal

  136. that helps you become a disciple. Maybe you're part of a Bible study. Maybe you're part of a small group.

  137. Maybe you're part of some way to help you understand the Bible more. And so the formalized process of

  138. discipleship is what we've become to be familiar with. And in each of those scenarios, there is a

  139. discipler or a mentor or a teacher. Somebody who has more knowledge, who is helping those of us who have less knowledge

  140. to be more like Jesus, to grow in discipleship.

  141. But as we're going to see,

  142. discipleship, while it does have a formal component,

  143. is also meant to have an informal component.

  144. It's about life on life.

  145. It's about, it's meant to be about people who are together.

  146. That discipleship can't happen without fellowship. And we'll learn about that more next week.

  147. You know, we're familiar with Matthew chapter 28 verses 19 and 20.

    Matthew 28:19

  148. It says,

  149. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,

  150. baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

  151. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

  152. And behold,

  153. I am with you always to the end of the age.

  154. We tend to think that this verse is for the super Christian.

  155. The ones who've arrived.

  156. The ones who are really mature.

  157. The ones who've been Christians for a while.

  158. The ones who have all the answers.

  159. Maybe the ones who we feel are really gifted.

  160. But for the rest of us,

  161. discipleship is just something we enjoy the benefits of.

  162. But that's not how Jesus phrases this verse.

  163. Notice, he's writing this verse to those who are disciples,

  164. but those who will also be disciples.

  165. And a disciple is simply somebody who is sent from Jesus to do his work.

  166. Those who have come into relationship with him.

  167. If you know Jesus Christ as your Savior,

  168. and you've given your life to him,

  169. then you are a disciple.

  170. So this verse is for you.

  171. It's for me.

  172. And in our going, it says,

  173. Go, therefore, and make disciples.

  174. We have a responsibility.

  175. All of us in this room,

  176. who are believers in Jesus Christ,

  177. have this mandate.

  178. Go and make disciples.

  179. And yet,

  180. why is it that so few of us are doing this work?

  181. I think it's because we misunderstand what discipleship is all about.

  182. And we think that discipleship always has to flow downhill.

  183. It has to flow from those who are more spiritual to those who are less spiritual.

  184. And because we don't feel qualified,

  185. we don't feel like we've arrived yet,

  186. we're not that super Christian yet,

  187. then we have nothing to offer.

  188. But that's not what Jesus is saying here.

  189. Somehow, all of us need to be involved in this process.

  190. And how does it happen?

  191. Well, I think it happens simply.

  192. It happens simply as we understand the call that God has put on our hearts

  193. to lead every person one step closer to Jesus.

  194. How does that happen?

  195. Well, that happens as God is working in your life.

  196. And as you share how God is working in your life

  197. with somebody that you're in relationship with.

  198. Maybe that's a co-worker.

  199. Maybe that's even one of your children.

  200. Maybe that's a friend in your family.

  201. Maybe that is somebody that's in your circles

  202. who comes to this church

  203. and they may be more spiritual

  204. and have been a Christian for a long time.

  205. They may be a baby Christian

  206. and have only known Jesus for a couple of months.

  207. They have something to offer you.

  208. I think about this even for myself.

  209. I've been a Christian now for,

  210. well, I'm 53, I'll be 54 this year.

  211. I got saved when I was five years old.

  212. So what, is that 48, 49 years I've been a Christian?

  213. And it's interesting that the longer you're a Christian,

  214. the easier it is for complacency to rest on your heart.

  215. There is something about the freshness of a new believer

  216. that makes my heart warm.

  217. And helps me, I'm kind of a fuddy-duddy, an old guy.

  218. It helps me to realize the wonder of what the gospel can do.

  219. It reignites in my heart an affection for Jesus.

  220. It sparks within me a desire to be about discipleship and evangelism.

  221. It does something for me.

  222. And that's by design.

  223. We belong together.

  224. We need each other.

  225. There are things that we have to offer each other.

  226. It happens through mutual relationship and community that God has placed us in.

  227. Every one of us needs to be about intentionally and incrementally

  228. helping to encourage others around us to look more like Jesus.

  229. Paul explains this well in Colossians 1, verse 28, when he says,

    Colossians 1:28

  230. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom.

  231. Why?

  232. That we may present everyone mature in Christ.

  233. If you're a believer here today, and you're part of this fellowship,

  234. the people who are here belong to you.

  235. They're your responsibility to help lead them one step closer to Jesus.

  236. Jesus, in your conversations.

  237. That our conversations are adorned with the gospel of God.

  238. And the wonder of what Christ is doing in your heart,

  239. so that you can encourage them to take one more step.

  240. Evangelism is next.

  241. In making disciples, we have to share this good news.

  242. How do the disciples happen?

  243. Well, they happen as we are proclaiming the mighty works of God to the world around us.

  244. And this is what happens in Jerusalem.

  245. And even this is not reserved for the elite believer.

  246. We're instructed to share the news of the gospel wherever we go.

  247. And this can seem quite intimidating.

  248. You might say, I don't have the gift of evangelism.

  249. This is not something I'm good at.

  250. But, you see, we've found that something is helpful.

  251. It's helpful to remember that God has called us all to two commands, right?

  252. What is the first and great command?

  253. It is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  254. And you know what happens?

  255. When that becomes true of you, it flows out into something else.

  256. It flows out into the second command.

  257. That you're going to love your neighbor as yourself.

  258. You see, loving your neighbor will naturally lead to telling them about Jesus.

  259. And the more you love Jesus with your heart, soul, mind, and strength,

  260. the more all-encompassing that love will become.

  261. And the more your identity will reflect the image of Jesus.

  262. And so, the conversations and relationships that you're a part of,

  263. the one thing that's going to stand out in that conversation is that you love Jesus.

  264. So, rather than seeing evangelism as a transaction,

  265. rather than seeing evangelism as an agenda or something that we need to do on a Saturday,

  266. we see evangelism as an expression of our love for the Lord.

  267. We live like Jesus to bless the world,

  268. not to make converts.

  269. We don't make converts.

  270. God makes converts.

  271. We have the responsibility of sharing the good news

  272. so that God can then do His work of building His church.

  273. See, we live to present the beauty of our Lord Jesus.

  274. And He is beautiful.

  275. And that's what Jesus did.

  276. We see that in Acts chapter 3, verse 26, it says,

    Acts 3:26

  277. God, having raised up His servant,

  278. sent Him to you first to bless you

  279. by turning every one of you from your wickedness.

  280. That's the joy that we get to have

  281. as those who love Jesus

  282. is wherever we go,

  283. we get a chance then to express our love for Christ

  284. to the world around us,

  285. whether or not they ever come to faith in Jesus Christ.

  286. Because it's about the glory of God

  287. and affection for God

  288. and entrusting to God

  289. the results of that message.

  290. Finally,

  291. we come to fellowship.

  292. What is fellowship?

  293. Well, fellowship is this space

  294. in which we belong together.

  295. It's this space where we understand

  296. we're connected together,

  297. we're unified together.

  298. And that's what we see in this church.

  299. Acts chapter 2, verse 42.

    Acts 2:42

  300. And they devoted themselves

  301. to the apostles' teaching

  302. and the fellowship

  303. to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

  304. This word for fellowship

  305. is the word koinonia.

  306. It's the word for sharing.

  307. It's the word for community.

  308. It's the word for togetherness.

  309. They were of one heart,

  310. one mind.

  311. It was almost as if

  312. they were like one person.

  313. They're described as like one man

  314. there in Jerusalem.

  315. They're so connected.

  316. And we realize

  317. it's not just about being

  318. in the same room together.

  319. It's not about just sharing

  320. the same space.

  321. But it's growing in our affection

  322. for one another.

  323. And I use the word affection

  324. because it's so much more direct

  325. and fitting, I think,

  326. than growing in love

  327. with one another,

  328. which is also true.

  329. I really want to love you

  330. by showing you

  331. that I have an affection for you.

  332. Not just general,

  333. but very specific.

  334. And this will show up

  335. in our conversations.

  336. It will show up

  337. in our ministry to one another.

  338. It will show up in our service.

  339. It will show up

  340. in the one another's that we do.

  341. The bearing of one another's burdens.

  342. The praying for one another.

  343. The loving one another.

  344. All the one another's

  345. we find through the scripture

  346. are taking place

  347. through this fellowshipping aspect.

  348. As we work through this passage,

  349. we find in verse 42,

  350. they're breaking of bread.

  351. We find in verse 42,

  352. they're praying for one another.

  353. It prompted generosity

  354. in verses 44 and 45.

  355. All who believed were together

  356. and had all things in common.

  357. They were selling their possessions

  358. and belongings

  359. and distributing the proceeds

  360. to all as any had need.

  361. This was a community of individuals

  362. who had real,

  363. authentic affection

  364. for one another.

  365. It showed up.

  366. So this is our fourfold ministry.

  367. This is what God has called

  368. every believer

  369. to be involved in.

  370. So let's turn our attention

  371. just for the next few moments

  372. back to chapter 2, verse 42.

  373. And we're going to focus

  374. and drill down

  375. just a little bit more

  376. on worship

  377. and answer this question,

  378. what is worship?

  379. So that we know

  380. how to be better worshipers.

  381. So what is worship?

  382. Worship begins

  383. with knowing God truly.

  384. It begins with knowing God truly.

  385. We see that in verse 42.

  386. It says,

  387. And they devoted themselves

  388. to the apostles' teaching

  389. and the fellowship,

  390. to the breaking of bread

  391. and to prayers,

  392. and awe came upon every soul.

  393. And many wonders and signs

  394. were being done

  395. through the apostles.

  396. And all who believed

  397. were together

  398. and had all things in common.

  399. And they were selling

  400. their possessions

  401. and belongings

  402. and distributing

  403. the proceeds to all

  404. as any had need.

  405. And day by day,

  406. attending temple together,

  407. and breaking bread

  408. in their homes,

  409. they received their food

  410. with glad and generous hearts,

  411. praising who?

  412. Praising God

  413. and having favor

  414. with all the people.

  415. And the Lord added

  416. to their number

  417. day by day

  418. those who were being saved.

  419. Worship is defined

  420. in several different ways,

  421. but I find two

  422. that are helpful.

  423. John Piper says this,

  424. It's treasuring God

  425. above all else.

  426. MacArthur has said,

  427. it's to honor,

  428. it's honor and admiration

  429. that's directed to God.

  430. Worship is the God-centered response

  431. of the whole person.

  432. It directs the whole person

  433. to love Him the way

  434. and worship Him

  435. the way that He deserves.

  436. And we find here

  437. this atmosphere.

  438. Did you notice it?

  439. As we're working through

  440. and read through these verses,

  441. did you see

  442. and get a sense

  443. of the electricity

  444. that's happening,

  445. the enthusiasm

  446. that's taking place

  447. in these new believers

  448. who are all together,

  449. they cannot get enough

  450. of one another.

  451. Do you sense that at all?

  452. This vibrance

  453. that's taking place?

  454. I think we can understand

  455. and appreciate

  456. what's happening.

  457. I remember

  458. my own conversion

  459. that took place

  460. when I was five years old.

  461. And I remember

  462. that Sunday morning,

  463. it was an early Sunday morning

  464. that my father

  465. was waking me up

  466. for church

  467. for that morning.

  468. And I don't know

  469. what I'd been thinking

  470. about that whole day,

  471. but I do know

  472. that my dad

  473. and my mom

  474. faithfully taught me

  475. the scripture.

  476. I knew what the Bible said.

  477. I knew what the Bible

  478. said about sin.

  479. I knew that sin

  480. separates us from God.

  481. And I knew

  482. that I was a sinner

  483. because all have sinned

  484. and come short

  485. of the glory of God.

  486. So as a sinner,

  487. I had set myself

  488. against God

  489. and against His glory

  490. and decided

  491. to do things my way.

  492. But God in His grace

  493. sent His Son,

  494. Jesus.

  495. Why?

  496. Because God so loved

  497. the world

  498. that He gave

  499. His only begotten Son

  500. that whoever

  501. believes in Him

  502. should not perish

  503. but have everlasting life.

  504. That's possible

  505. because of Jesus'

  506. righteousness.

  507. Jesus'

  508. perfection.

  509. perfection.

  510. Jesus fulfilled the law.

  511. He did it perfectly.

  512. He was the God-man.

  513. And as man,

  514. He could die

  515. for my sin.

  516. As God,

  517. that sacrifice

  518. that Jesus paid

  519. applied to everyone

  520. who believed.

  521. And I wanted to enjoy

  522. the benefits

  523. of that invitation

  524. to recognize

  525. that Jesus

  526. in His death

  527. paid for my sin.

  528. We find that

  529. in Romans 6,

    Romans 6:23

  530. verse 23,

  531. the wages of sin

  532. is death.

  533. That's what I deserve.

  534. But the gift of God

  535. is eternal life

  536. through Jesus Christ

  537. our Lord.

  538. So you have to know

  539. Jesus.

  540. And so I asked

  541. my dad

  542. in those quiet moments

  543. if he would lead me

  544. in a prayer

  545. so that I could come

  546. to know Jesus

  547. as my own personal

  548. Lord and Savior.

  549. In that morning,

  550. I gave my life,

  551. my heart,

  552. to Jesus.

  553. And I appreciate

  554. what my dad

  555. wanted to remind me of

  556. is that coming

  557. to faith in Christ

  558. doesn't mean

  559. that everything's

  560. going to be okay.

  561. Matter of fact,

  562. sometimes coming to Christ

  563. makes things harder.

  564. But having Jesus,

  565. having Jesus

  566. is all that we need.

  567. Jesus has been sufficient.

  568. Jesus has been

  569. all that I need.

  570. And for me,

  571. there was

  572. an energy

  573. and a zeal

  574. that happened

  575. of fresh electricity

  576. in my heart

  577. because of the work

  578. of Christ

  579. in my life

  580. in that moment.

  581. Even as a five-year-old,

  582. I was going bananas.

  583. I couldn't help.

  584. I wanted to rush

  585. to all of my friends

  586. in children's Sunday school.

  587. I wanted to tell everybody

  588. about what Jesus

  589. had done for me.

  590. And my next-door neighbor

  591. the next day,

  592. I ran across the street.

  593. I wanted to tell her

  594. what Jesus had done for me.

  595. So you can imagine

  596. the electricity

  597. of this moment,

  598. this church,

  599. 3,000 men.

  600. Who knows how many

  601. women and children

  602. coming to faith in Jesus.

  603. And the testimony

  604. of knowing Jesus

  605. not only led them

  606. to worshiping Jesus,

  607. but it led them

  608. to community

  609. with one another.

  610. This electricity.

  611. And this new joy

  612. leads to sincere devotion.

  613. And it's devotion.

  614. You see that in verse 42.

  615. Devotion to the teaching.

  616. The apostles' teaching.

  617. The apostles were teaching

  618. about who Christ was.

  619. The apostles were communicating

  620. that word they heard

  621. first from the Lord Jesus.

  622. In John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  623. we understand that

  624. the word of God

  625. was made flesh.

  626. He dwelt among us

  627. so that he could communicate

  628. to a people

  629. who needed to hear him.

  630. Who needed to hear his word.

  631. So they could know him

  632. and worship him.

  633. You cannot worship a God

  634. you do not know.

  635. And so God has communicated

  636. himself through his word

  637. so that we can not just

  638. know him,

  639. but we can be drawn

  640. into relationship

  641. and we can come

  642. to worship him.

  643. And that's why the gospel,

  644. it's where the gospel begins.

  645. And now flowing out

  646. from this space,

  647. now you see a people

  648. who are changed.

  649. They know God.

  650. They're worshiping God.

  651. And it leads to this next part.

  652. Worship then also leads

  653. to loving God supremely.

  654. To loving God supremely.

  655. You see this

  656. in verses 46 and 47.

  657. Notice.

  658. And day by day

  659. attending the temple together

  660. and breaking bread

  661. in their homes,

  662. they receive their food

  663. with glad and generous hearts.

  664. Praising God

  665. and having favor

  666. with all the people.

  667. Their affection for God

  668. is reflected

  669. in their affection

  670. for one another.

  671. God has changed them.

  672. They're no longer

  673. individuals.

  674. Now they belong together.

  675. And this affection

  676. is spilling over.

  677. The work of God

  678. in their hearts

  679. is drawing them

  680. to one another.

  681. This corporate nature

  682. of their worship

  683. is telling.

  684. They recognize

  685. that God had done something

  686. and it had changed them.

  687. And now they're not

  688. just attending temple

  689. individually.

  690. Now they're attending temple

  691. day by day together.

  692. Hey, would you go with me

  693. to the temple?

  694. Let's do this together.

  695. Let's worship the Lord together.

  696. We're in this.

  697. God has done something for us.

  698. Let's celebrate this work

  699. and do it.

  700. Do it together.

  701. And we understand

  702. that worship

  703. while it's amplified

  704. on a Sunday morning

  705. it's not restricted

  706. to Sunday.

  707. As a matter of fact

  708. Sunday morning

  709. isn't accomplishing

  710. the objective

  711. if it's the only time

  712. that you worship

  713. through the week.

  714. See, we have failed

  715. as a church

  716. if worship doesn't

  717. spill into every part

  718. of your every day.

  719. We have failed

  720. in our purpose

  721. as a body

  722. if we're content

  723. with just an hour

  724. with God

  725. once a week.

  726. And that's what we

  727. say when our worship

  728. on Sunday

  729. when it fails

  730. to show up

  731. on Monday

  732. then worship

  733. really isn't taking

  734. root in your life.

  735. And we see worship

  736. in this church

  737. worship that pervades

  738. every dimension

  739. of life.

  740. They enjoyed worship

  741. because they were

  742. growing in love

  743. with the Lord

  744. and growing in love

  745. with one another.

  746. And finally

  747. worship results

  748. in obeying God

  749. sincerely.

  750. In obeying God

  751. sincerely.

  752. As we work

  753. through this passage

  754. we're going to

  755. notice immediately

  756. that all of the

  757. patterns that we

  758. see reflected

  759. in this church

  760. are first

  761. patterns that

  762. showed up

  763. in our Lord Jesus.

  764. That Jesus

  765. himself was

  766. a teaching

  767. prophet.

  768. That Jesus

  769. fellowshiped

  770. with his disciples.

  771. He fellowshiped

  772. with others.

  773. Those intimate

  774. times we get

  775. to see even

  776. at Bethany

  777. as Jesus is

  778. fellowshipping

  779. with Mary

  780. and Martha

  781. and Lazarus.

  782. He's also

  783. breaking bread

  784. with his disciples.

  785. He's attending

  786. temple with his

  787. disciples.

  788. Jesus is

  789. fulfilling

  790. the commands

  791. that God

  792. has instructed

  793. him to do.

  794. All of those

  795. commings we find

  796. throughout the

  797. Old Testament

  798. Jesus fulfilled

  799. every single

  800. one.

  801. He is the

  802. fulfillment

  803. of all that

  804. God expected.

  805. And he's

  806. establishing

  807. that worship

  808. to God

  809. requires

  810. obedience

  811. to God.

  812. We find in

  813. Philippians

    Philippians 2:8

  814. chapter 2

  815. verse 8

  816. this statement

  817. in being found

  818. in human form

  819. he humbled

  820. himself

  821. by becoming

  822. obedient

  823. to the point

  824. of death

  825. even death

  826. on a cross.

  827. So the

  828. apostle John

  829. will say

  830. in his letter

  831. in 1 John

    1 John 2:3

  832. chapter 2

  833. verses 3

  834. and 4

  835. and by this

  836. we know

  837. that we have

  838. come to know

  839. him

  840. if we keep

  841. his commandments.

  842. Whoever says

  843. I know him

  844. but does not

  845. keep his commandments

  846. is a liar

  847. and the truth

  848. is not in him.

  849. Now does that

  850. mean that our

  851. salvation

  852. is contingent

  853. upon obedience?

  854. No.

  855. It's contingent

  856. upon the work

  857. of Christ's

  858. obedience.

  859. He was

  860. obedient

  861. so we can

  862. enjoy the

  863. benefits of

  864. that but

  865. the assurance

  866. of the

  867. faith that

  868. we have

  869. is confirmed

  870. by our

  871. obedience to

  872. the Lord

  873. Jesus himself.

  874. Our love

  875. for him

  876. spills out

  877. in obedience

  878. to him.

  879. You see

  880. at Maranatha

  881. there are

  882. some lanes

  883. that we want

  884. to try to help

  885. kind of nurture

  886. worship in

  887. your life.

  888. We want you

  889. to see that

  890. worship isn't

  891. just something

  892. that happens

  893. here on Sunday

  894. but it should

  895. spill into

  896. every part

  897. of your week.

  898. And I just

  899. want to draw

  900. attention to

  901. a couple

  902. very briefly.

  903. First I

  904. trust that you

  905. notice that

  906. our singing

  907. is meant

  908. to draw

  909. you in

  910. to worshiping

  911. Jesus.

  912. It draws

  913. attention to

  914. him.

  915. It's living

  916. with him

  917. in the

  918. spotlight.

  919. And so

  920. Pastor John

  921. does some

  922. things very

  923. intentionally

  924. to draw

  925. attention to

  926. Jesus

  927. and not

  928. distract

  929. from him.

  930. Things like

  931. picking songs

  932. that speak

  933. about Jesus.

  934. Picking songs

  935. that use

  936. the word of

  937. God as a

  938. foundation

  939. for our

  940. singing.

  941. That draw

  942. your affection

  943. to him.

  944. That help

  945. you grow

  946. and wow

  947. this Jesus

  948. is amazing

  949. I want to

  950. know him

  951. more.

  952. That's the

  953. goal of the

  954. songs that

  955. we sing.

  956. It's not

  957. to draw

  958. attention to

  959. you and

  960. all of

  961. your

  962. troubles

  963. and all

  964. of your

  965. pains.

  966. It's to

  967. help you

  968. understand

  969. that in

  970. your pain

  971. you can

  972. look to

  973. Jesus

  974. who's able

  975. to resolve

  976. them in

  977. himself.

  978. Maybe not

  979. send them

  980. away perhaps

  981. but to

  982. strengthen

  983. you in

  984. the process

  985. of recognizing

  986. that he

  987. is this

  988. friend that

  989. sticks closer

  990. than a

  991. brother even

  992. when you're

  993. facing opposition.

  994. We sing

  995. songs that

  996. are meant

  997. to direct

  998. your attention

  999. to Jesus.

  1000. But even

  1001. in the way

  1002. that we sing

  1003. songs here

  1004. it's to

  1005. draw attention

  1006. to the

  1007. wonder of

  1008. Christ.

  1009. And that's

  1010. why John

  1011. has been very

  1012. careful to

  1013. kind of keep

  1014. the lights

  1015. up so that

  1016. we can see

  1017. one another.

  1018. We can enjoy

  1019. the benefits

  1020. of being a

  1021. part of this

  1022. community.

  1023. And while we

  1024. are individuals

  1025. and while we

  1026. do have a

  1027. responsibility

  1028. to worship

  1029. God one-on-one

  1030. with the

  1031. Lord,

  1032. Sunday morning

  1033. is a way for

  1034. us to be

  1035. together.

  1036. Pastor John

  1037. has often

  1038. said,

  1039. and I agree,

  1040. that when you

  1041. have a chance

  1042. to look around

  1043. the room

  1044. and you know

  1045. that somebody

  1046. in the room

  1047. is really

  1048. struggling

  1049. and yet there

  1050. they are

  1051. singing to

  1052. the Lord

  1053. praises to

  1054. God.

  1055. I trust that

  1056. that helps

  1057. to encourage

  1058. you to know,

  1059. you know what,

  1060. if they can

  1061. sing to Jesus

  1062. when things

  1063. are really

  1064. bad,

  1065. what a great

  1066. lesson for

  1067. my heart

  1068. to know

  1069. that Jesus

  1070. is able

  1071. to help me

  1072. even in

  1073. this pain

  1074. that I'm

  1075. feeling.

  1076. John also

  1077. wants to make

  1078. sure that we

  1079. don't spotlight

  1080. the giftedness

  1081. of our

  1082. musicians

  1083. or our

  1084. singers.

  1085. And by

  1086. God's grace

  1087. we have a lot

  1088. of really

  1089. gifted people

  1090. here.

  1091. I am so

  1092. thankful for

  1093. how God

  1094. has assembled

  1095. that.

  1096. But it's

  1097. not about

  1098. showcasing

  1099. people,

  1100. it's about

  1101. drawing attention

  1102. to our

  1103. Savior.

  1104. And so when

  1105. we sing

  1106. songs and

  1107. the way

  1108. we sing

  1109. songs,

  1110. we want

  1111. to make

  1112. sure that

  1113. Jesus is

  1114. the center

  1115. of all of

  1116. those things,

  1117. not a

  1118. musician who

  1119. is really

  1120. gifted in

  1121. what they

  1122. do.

  1123. We also

  1124. want to draw

  1125. attention to

  1126. the wonder

  1127. of who God

  1128. is through

  1129. our preaching.

  1130. So we're

  1131. going to

  1132. preach the

  1133. text.

  1134. We're going

  1135. to get you

  1136. into the

  1137. Word of

  1138. God.

  1139. And we're

  1140. going to,

  1141. by design,

  1142. normally we're

  1143. going to teach

  1144. expositionally

  1145. through books

  1146. of the Bible.

  1147. That's our

  1148. goal.

  1149. And what that

  1150. helps me to

  1151. do is

  1152. make sure

  1153. that I'm

  1154. not just

  1155. telling you

  1156. the things

  1157. that are

  1158. easy and

  1159. comfortable

  1160. for me to

  1161. say or

  1162. things that

  1163. are easy and

  1164. comfortable for

  1165. you to hear.

  1166. We want to

  1167. prioritize the

  1168. Word of God

  1169. and we want to

  1170. prioritize the

  1171. teaching so

  1172. that Jesus is

  1173. in the spotlight

  1174. through good

  1175. things and

  1176. hard things to

  1177. know, you know

  1178. what, here's a

  1179. church that's

  1180. going to tell me

  1181. the truth whether

  1182. or not it's

  1183. easy for me to

  1184. hear.

  1185. So we're

  1186. going to go

  1187. through books

  1188. of the Bible.

  1189. We're going to

  1190. teach in a way

  1191. that's expositional

  1192. verse by verse,

  1193. book by book,

  1194. that's the goal.

  1195. We also want to

  1196. be a people who

  1197. are drawn together

  1198. in prayer.

  1199. Pastor David has

  1200. done an amazing

  1201. job in putting

  1202. together something

  1203. every single week

  1204. called the

  1205. Powerhouse Prayer.

  1206. It is a little

  1207. telegram article

  1208. and it is

  1209. phenomenal.

  1210. It walks you

  1211. through not only

  1212. the prayer requests

  1213. that are current

  1214. in our body but

  1215. also walks you

  1216. through a passage

  1217. of scripture to

  1218. know how you can

  1219. pray more faithfully.

  1220. How can you use

  1221. the Word of God

1222. to pray in a way

  1223. that you're not

  1224. distracted, that

  1225. helps to align your

  1226. heart to what God

  1227. wants to do.

  1228. Praying God's

  1229. words back to Him.

  1230. In prayer we also

  1231. have small groups

  1232. that incorporate

  1233. prayer as a main

  1234. element of their

  1235. time together.

  1236. prayer in giving.

  1237. We want to call

  1238. you to give not

  1239. because we need

  1240. money.

  1241. We want to call

  1242. you to give because

  1243. we want you to

  1244. enjoy the blessing

  1245. of recognizing that

  1246. God is able to

  1247. provide for your

  1248. needs.

  1249. And to enjoy the

  1250. blessing of knowing

  1251. Him for yourself

  1252. and seeing that in

  1253. your expression of

  1254. giving you're

  1255. trusting Him with

  1256. your stuff.

  1257. Fellowship.

  1258. We want our

  1259. fellowship to be

  1260. Christ-centered.

  1261. We'll talk about

  1262. that more next

  1263. week.

  1264. We want to draw

  1265. our attention not

  1266. just to the things

  1267. that are going on

  1268. in your life.

  1269. We care about those

  1270. two but we want

  1271. your fellowship to

  1272. be the kind of

  1273. fellowship we see

  1274. in Hebrews where

  1275. you're stirring one

  1276. another up to love

  1277. and good deeds.

  1278. And finally,

  1279. service.

  1280. Service to God.

  1281. In your service

  1282. here at Maranatha

  1283. that your service

  1284. is directed to

  1285. Him.

  1286. You see,

  1287. worship happens

  1288. when we gather

  1289. and sing and pray

  1290. and hear the word

  1291. of God.

  1292. We fellowship

  1293. and we praise

  1294. but worship is

  1295. meant really to

  1296. direct your hearts

  1297. to Him.

  1298. And I trust

  1299. that as we grow

  1300. in this together

  1301. that God will help

  1302. us to be faithful.

  1303. Let me pray.

  1304. Father, I thank

  1305. you.

  1306. I thank you for

  1307. your word and for

  1308. the challenge we

  1309. get from this

  1310. scripture.

  1311. how you put the

  1312. church together.

  1313. It's incredible.

  1314. Thank you that the

  1315. work of the church

1316. does not rest on us.

  1317. The work of building

  1318. this church rests on

  1319. you.

  1320. So steer our hearts

  1321. towards you, Lord.

1322. Help us to know you

  1323. more, to love you

  1324. more, to depend on

1325. you more so that we

  1326. can show Christ

  1327. through our lives

  1328. more clearly day by

  1329. day.

  1330. In Jesus' name we

  1331. pray.

  1332. Amen.

  1333. God bless you.

  1334. Have a great week.

  1335. Amen.
