  1. I want to encourage you to open up your Bibles, if you would, to Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. What does it look like?

  4. So we've sought to answer that question.

  5. Then we've moved to the next question, what is the purpose of the church?

  6. So if God has put a church together, what is the objectives that he's put in front of them?

  7. Why do they exist?

  8. What is the goal of their gathering together?

  9. We've spent the last several weeks working through the fourfold purpose of the church.

  10. We'll be finishing that out this morning.

  11. We're going to turn to one more question towards the end of our time together,

  12. and that is, who is the church?

  13. So once we understand what the church is, who makes up the church,

  14. and what does it mean to be part of the church,

  15. and we'll spend some time looking at that as we wrap up our series this morning.

  16. The Lord has given us a picture, a picture through the Scripture on what a church looks like.

  17. We see this interactive community of believers who are fellowshipping with one another,

  18. and so we get this picture in full color as we've been reading through the last few verses of Acts 2,

    Acts 2:42–47

  19. verses 42 to 47.

  20. Those of us who enjoy sports, I don't know if there's any baseball fans out there,

  21. but I think the baseball season has just begun,

  22. and I'm sure those of you who enjoy baseball are going bananas.

  23. It's good to enjoy your favorite sport.

  24. Well, those of you who know something about sports,

  25. my family would once in a while go and enjoy a Cincinnati Reds game,

  26. and that was an experience, just being able to go down to the park and to be in the stands

  27. and to watch the game, to enjoy some conversation with friends and family who had gathered there together.

  28. But you know how it works.

  29. You know, there's the stands.

  30. There's people who are sitting in the stands.

  31. They may be wearing the same colors.

  32. They may even be wearing the jersey.

  33. They often know the stats.

  34. They can identify the players.

  35. They're excited about when their team wins the game.

  36. But at the end of the day, they're just a fan.

  37. They're not a player.

  38. There's something quite distinct about a player and a person who's observing and watching the game.

  39. Right?

  40. The players belong to the team in a really formal way.

  41. And so that when a victory happens,

  42. it's not that the fans are patting themselves on the back,

  43. look what we accomplished,

  44. but it's the players who get to take credit for the victory that they've been able to achieve.

  45. The difference between a fan and a player is the sense of belonging.

  46. The sense of attachment.

  47. The sense, not just that they're sharing the same space,

  48. but there's an obligation, a commitment they have to one another.

  49. And that's what we've been coming to observe in our passage this morning

  50. and throughout the last several weeks as we've been working through Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  51. We've seen this portrait.

  52. This portrait of belonging.

  53. This portrait of togetherness.

  54. This portrait of connectivity that's taken place among these believers.

  55. They're not loosely attached.

  56. They're committed.

  57. And they belong to one another.

  58. There's two words that have stood out to us

  59. as we've been kind of working our way through this passage.

  60. And the first is found for us in verse 41.

  61. It says, and they were added to one another.

  62. They belong together.

  63. There was a numbering, a specific grouping.

  64. There was an addition that took place.

  65. They were counted.

  66. And the sum total of them was collectively emblematic

  67. of their belonging to one another.

  68. Then we find that they were devoted to the fellowship.

  69. We saw that a little last week.

  70. And the definite article that's used there

  71. where they were devoted to the teaching and the fellowship.

  72. This specific group, this identifiable group of individuals they belong to.

  73. And so Acts chapter 2 is not just describing fans.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  74. It's not just describing for us a group of people who are loosely attached.

  75. It's describing a group of individuals who belong together

  76. and have recognized that there's a commitment now that they have to one another

  77. because of what Christ has accomplished for them.

  78. They're a team.

  79. They're a family.

  80. And as we use the metaphor of the scripture,

  81. they're a body.

  82. They belong.

  83. So we've been looking at this fourfold purpose.

  84. We began a couple of weeks ago.

  85. And the first purpose is worship.

  86. We've called bow, to bow ourselves in worship to God.

  87. And this is what we've said,

  88. living with the spotlight on Jesus.

  89. That Jesus is the center.

  90. He's the objective.

  91. He's the focal point.

  92. He's the reason for our gathering.

  93. And He's the one who helps to,

  94. not only to inflame our worship,

  95. but to motivate our worship,

  96. our activity towards one another.

  97. It spills out in a number of different ways.

  98. Yes, worship is singing.

  99. But worship is also praying.

  100. It's teaching.

  101. It's fellowshipping.

  102. It's serving.

  103. It's also working and playing and resting.

  104. That we know that all of this is meant,

  105. every sphere of life is meant to be punctuated

  106. and saturated by worship.

  107. It's the expression of our life.

  108. Whether, therefore, you eat or drink

  109. or whatever you do,

  110. you do all to the glory of God.

  111. And that is our worship

  112. because we want Jesus,

  113. His glory to be in the center.

  114. We also have come to see

  115. the importance of discipleship.

  116. And this is the build category.

  117. This is the constructive part of what we do.

  118. The purpose of our being together

  119. is to build one another up,

  120. to equip one another in the work of the Lord.

  121. We said that discipleship is leading

  122. every person one step closer to Jesus.

  123. It's not a formal program,

  124. although it can be.

  125. It's meant to be this informal,

  126. life-on-life,

  127. interactive kind of thing that we do together

  128. so that in every interaction

  129. that we have with one another,

  130. the goal is how to stir one another

  131. up to love and good deeds.

  132. It's to actively and deliberately

  133. seek to build up those

  134. that God has put us in fellowship with.

  135. That's the essence of discipleship.

  136. It leads to growth.

  137. It leads to the kind of maturing body

  138. of believers

  139. who are growing in their love for Jesus

  140. and growing in love for one another.

  141. The Apostle Paul puts it this way

  142. in Colossians 1.28 when he says,

  143. Him we proclaim,

  144. warning everyone and teaching everyone

  145. that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.

  146. That's the goal.

  147. Forming Christ in others.

  148. Seeking to develop and nurture them

  149. so they look more like Jesus.

  150. And as we can become more like Jesus,

  151. the desire is to help stimulate

  152. that kind of growth in others as well.

  153. That leads us to fellowship.

  154. Fellowship is the belonging part

  155. of what we do.

  156. And we have said this,

  157. actively pursuing the health of the whole.

  158. That fellowship isn't just eating meals together.

  159. Fellowship isn't just sitting around

  160. and shooting the breeze.

  161. But true Christian fellowship has a goal.

  162. The goal of true Christian fellowship

  163. is what we find in Hebrews.

  164. It says,

  165. To stir one another up to love and good deeds.

  166. It's to help them grow.

  167. It's found out in all the one another commands

  168. that we looked at last week.

  169. The list of all the things

  170. that we are meant to do for one another.

  171. It flows out of this true Christian fellowship

  172. that we have.

  173. So the goal of the Christian life

  174. is not autonomy.

  175. It's not self-sufficiency.

  176. It's stimulating and building relationships

  177. to help us understand our togetherness.

  178. That we belong together.

  179. And that once we fellowship in the right way,

  180. then it becomes a catalyst

  181. for all of these other things

  182. that God has called us to.

  183. That Christian fellowship

  184. is the foundation for discipleship.

  185. Remember from Mark chapter 3 verse 14,

    Mark 3:14

  186. it says that Jesus,

  187. he selected the 12

  188. so that they might be with him

  189. and they might send them out to preach.

  190. It begins with fellowship.

  191. It begins with their belonging with Christ

  192. and seeing and enjoying his ministry

  193. before he could ever send them out

  194. to be representatives of his message.

  195. They had to know him first.

  196. It's also the catalyst for evangelism.

  197. And we'll look at that more in just a moment.

  198. But do you realize

  199. if you want to be an effective evangelist,

  200. you need to understand your commitment

  201. to the body that God has placed you

  202. in community with.

  203. If you want to be a great evangelist,

  204. if you want to share the gospel,

  205. it often happens in relationships

  206. that God has allowed you to enjoy.

  207. So those are the three of the four purposes.

  208. Let's turn our attention now to this final one.

  209. What is evangelism?

  210. What is evangelism?

  211. We're going to see first of all

  212. that evangelism is our way to bless the world.

  213. It's our way to bless the world.

  214. We see that right here at the outset

  215. in verse 47.

  216. Acts chapter 2 verse 47,

    Acts 2:47

  217. at the very end of the chapter,

  218. it says this,

  219. praising God and having favor

  220. with all the people.

  221. And notice what happens.

  222. And the Lord added to their number day by day

  223. those who were being saved.

  224. Favor with all the people.

  225. This word for favor

  226. is the Greek word charis.

  227. It's the word for grace.

  228. And we get to see here,

  229. here in Jerusalem,

  230. the outflow of God's favor

  231. on his people

  232. is showing up.

  233. And not just,

  234. not just remaining with them,

  235. but pouring out

  236. and spilling out.

  237. And so that all those

  238. who are in Jerusalem

  239. get to enjoy the benefits

  240. of this favor of God

  241. on the people of God

  242. as they are interacting

  243. and they are experiencing

  244. and enjoying the benefits

  245. of God's grace to them

  246. and it's flowing out

  247. in this expressive way

  248. so that all of Jerusalem

  249. gets to enjoy this measure

  250. of God's favor.

  251. They see it.

  252. They experience it.

  253. So we see,

  254. we've seen this authentic community

  255. of believers

  256. and what are they doing?

  257. Well, there's personal sacrifice involved.

  258. There's selling possessions.

  259. There's meeting needs.

  260. There's attending temple.

  261. There's sharing meal.

  262. There's praising God.

  263. There's glad and generous hearts.

  264. There's a life change

  265. that's taken place

  266. among these people.

  267. They are different.

  268. There's something substantial.

  269. There's something weighty

  270. about what's taken place here.

  271. Something different.

  272. These believers in Jerusalem

  273. were genuinely interested

  274. in other people.

  275. They are moved

  276. from being those

  277. who are self-serving

  278. to being those

  279. who are self-sacrificing.

  280. And it's visible.

  281. It's clear.

  282. It's obvious.

  283. They were blessed by God

  284. and they became a blessing.

  285. And that's a key point

  286. I want to just draw out here.

  287. That by experiencing

  288. the favor of God,

  289. now they become the conduits

  290. of God's favor,

  291. God's blessing

  292. to a people

  293. who they don't know God.

  294. And that God then adds

  295. to their number,

  296. the number of the church,

  297. day by day

  298. those who are being saved.

  299. Because as the grace of God

  300. is resident in his people

  301. and it's pouring out

  302. on the city,

  303. the city gets to see

  304. the benefits

  305. of that favor

  306. and that blessing as well.

  307. We see the foundations

  308. of this in the next chapter,

  309. Acts chapter 3.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  310. We're going to get to

  311. in just a couple of weeks.

  312. And I want to just give us

  313. a quick reminder

  314. of what happens there

  315. and just draw your attention

  316. back to this,

  317. the blessing of God.

  318. You know the story.

  319. Peter and John,

  320. they'll go to Jerusalem

  321. during the time of prayer.

  322. And while they're there,

  323. there's a man who's brought,

  324. this lame man,

  325. he's been lame since birth

  326. and there he is,

  327. he's laid at the temple.

  328. And he's asking for money

  329. but Peter and John,

  330. they said,

  331. hey, we're not going

  332. to give you any money

  333. but I got something

  334. better for you.

  335. Peter says,

  336. he heals the man,

  337. the man leaps up for joy

  338. and as a result of this work,

  339. this astonishing,

  340. this astonishing work

  341. creates this heart of joy

  342. in the people

  343. there in the temple.

  344. And they're praising God.

  345. Peter capitalizes

  346. on the situation

  347. and he now preaches

  348. this message

  349. but there in Acts chapter 3

    Acts 3:13

  350. verse 13,

  351. notice where he starts.

  352. He starts this way.

  353. The God of Abraham,

  354. the God of Isaac,

  355. and the God of Jacob,

  356. the God of our fathers,

  357. glorified his servant Jesus

  358. whom you delivered over

  359. to be and denied

  360. in the presence of Pilate

  361. when he decided

  362. to release him.

  363. He begins right back

  364. in the promise

  365. that was given to Abraham.

  366. God has not forgotten

  367. his people.

  368. And what we begin to see

  369. working its way out

  370. here in Jerusalem

  371. is the confirmation

  372. that God has not forgotten

  373. his promises to Abraham

  374. and is actually

  375. going to use those promises

  376. and we're going to see them

  377. worked out now

  378. in the ministry

  379. of Peter and John

  380. in the salvation

  381. of those who come to faith

  382. in Christ there in Jerusalem.

  383. Notice in verses 25 and 26

  384. of chapter 3.

  385. It says,

  386. Do you notice what's happening?

  387. Do you see what's taking place?

  388. God promised Abraham,

  389. going back to Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12:2

  390. verses 2 and 3,

  391. He says,

  392. I will make of you

  393. a great nation.

  394. I will bless you

  395. and make your name great

  396. so that you will be a blessing.

  397. I will bless those

  398. who bless you

  399. and him who dishonors you

  400. I will curse

  401. and in you

  402. all the families of the earth

  403. shall be blessed.

  404. That was the promise

  405. that God made to Abraham

  406. 1,500 years

  407. before Jesus came

  408. and now in Jerusalem

  409. that promise is happening.

  410. It's happening right

  411. before their eyes.

  412. The blessing

  413. that was promised to Abraham

  414. is now extended

  415. through his son,

  416. Jesus Christ,

  417. who now has come

  418. to make a way

  419. for those who come

  420. to be saved

  421. to now be a blessing,

  422. to receive the blessing

  423. and to be a blessing.

  424. This promise to Abraham

  425. confirmed and sealed

  426. and now being fulfilled

  427. through the ministry

  428. of Christ

  429. and his men,

  430. Peter and John

  431. and the rest of the apostles.

  432. Christ blessed us

  433. so that we would be a blessing.

  434. And so that through us,

  435. going back to this promise,

  436. in you all the nations

  437. will be blessed.

  438. This promise worked out

  439. through us

  440. by receiving the gospel,

  441. enjoying the benefits

  442. of Christ's work

  443. and now being a blessing

  444. to the world around us.

  445. And this is important

  446. because when we often

  447. think about evangelism,

  448. I think we're prone

  449. to think about conversion.

  450. We're prone to think

  451. about making converts,

  452. maybe closing the deal,

  453. maybe having the best arguments,

  454. maybe presenting the best case,

  455. making sure that people

  456. not only understand,

  457. but they come to faith

  458. in Jesus Christ.

  459. We want to win

  460. these arguments.

  461. We want to have

  462. the best crafted apologetic.

  463. We want to make sure

  464. that we are doing

  465. the closing the deal,

  466. what all the words

  467. that you want to say.

  468. But the spirit

  469. and the goal

  470. of evangelism

  471. is to bless.

  472. It's simply

  473. to be a blessing.

  474. And then,

  475. as a result,

  476. allowing God

  477. to do the work.

  478. Because notice

  479. in verse 47,

  480. who adds

  481. to the number

  482. day by day

  483. those who are being saved?

  484. The Lord adds

  485. to the number

  486. day by day

  487. those who are being saved.

  488. Our goal then

  489. is to be a blessing

  490. regardless of the outcomes

  491. and let God do

  492. the work

  493. that God

  494. is going to do.

  495. Trust Him

  496. with that work.

  497. And so we entrust

  498. those results

  499. to the Lord

  500. because it's the Lord

  501. who then brings

  502. that work.

  503. So we need to understand

  504. the significance

  505. of this goal.

  506. The goal of God

  507. doing this work

  508. and having,

  509. blessing

  510. the world

  511. as an objective

  512. for our hearts.

  513. Second,

  514. I want you to understand

  515. that evangelism

  516. is our way

  517. to love our neighbor.

  518. It's our way

  519. to love our neighbor.

  520. You know,

  521. we're all familiar

  522. with the way

  523. that Jesus

  524. summarized

  525. all the law

  526. and the prophets,

  527. right?

  528. There's 600 plus

  529. commands

  530. that are given

  531. to us

  532. in the Old Testament.

  533. Jesus narrowed it

  534. down to two.

  535. The first is

  536. love the Lord

  537. your God

  538. with all your heart,

  539. soul, mind,

  540. and strength.

  541. The second,

  542. it says,

  543. is like it

  544. to love your neighbor

  545. as yourself.

  546. How do you know

  547. that you love God?

  548. Well,

  549. you know that you love God

  550. when it expresses itself

  551. in real,

  552. tangible,

  553. physical,

  554. obvious,

  555. outworking of love

  556. to the people

  557. that God has put you

  558. in community with,

  559. relationship with.

  560. So I can know

  561. that I am loving God

  562. when I'm growing in love

  563. with the people

  564. that God has put me

  565. in community with.

  566. So,

  567. our evangelism

  568. is meant

  569. to be an outworking

  570. of our love

  571. for the world.

  572. that it's not

  573. contingent upon

  574. their response

  575. to us

  576. or their kindness

  577. to us

  578. or their reception

  579. to the gospel.

  580. That regardless

  581. of whether they

  582. reject the gospel

  583. or not,

  584. that I still have

  585. an obligation

  586. to love them.

  587. And so,

  588. in loving them,

  589. I'm investing in them

  590. in seeking

  591. to do a work

  592. to welcome

  593. and invite them

  594. into a relationship

  595. with Jesus

  596. as well.

  597. Of course,

  598. the greatest blessing

  599. that our world

  600. could ever enjoy

  601. is the blessing

  602. of Christ.

  603. And notice,

  604. back in chapter 3,

  605. verse 26,

  606. what was Christ's goal?

  607. God,

  608. having raised up

  609. his servant,

  610. sent him to you first

  611. to bless you

  612. by turning every one

  613. of you from your wickedness.

  614. Even Jesus' goal

  615. was a goal of blessing.

  616. Blessing others

  617. through the gospel,

  618. turning them

  619. from their wickedness

  620. and turning them

  621. to himself.

  622. That was his goal.

  623. So,

  624. how do we do this?

  625. How do we,

  626. if the objective

  627. and the goal

  628. is to bless the world

  629. and the outworking

  630. of that strategy

  631. is to love our neighbors,

  632. how do we do that tangibly?

  633. Well,

  634. this word bless

  635. is an acronym

  636. and I want to just

  637. introduce you

  638. to it briefly.

  639. And I want to encourage you,

  640. this will just not only

  641. make it memorable,

  642. but for those of you

  643. who feel very overwhelmed

  644. about evangelism,

  645. this isn't my spiritual gift,

  646. I feel really awkward

  647. about this,

  648. I'm not sure

  649. if I can do this,

  650. you might feel intimidated,

  651. this will make it easy

  652. and this will help you

  653. step into it

  654. in a way

  655. that should take

  656. the edge off.

  657. First is,

  658. begin to pray.

  659. Begin to pray.

  660. That's the B.

  661. See,

  662. if anyone's

  663. going to come to faith

  664. in Christ,

  665. it has to be

  666. a work of the Lord.

  667. The Lord added

  668. day by day

  669. those who are being saved

  670. and so if it has to be

  671. a work of the Lord,

  672. we as God's people

  673. need to pray

  674. for the Lord

  675. to do His work.

  676. We need to ask

  677. and invite the Lord

  678. to stimulate hearts,

  679. to give us opportunities,

  680. to open up our eyes

  681. so that we can see

  682. the opportunities

  683. that are there

  684. and have courage

  685. to step into

  686. those opportunities.

  687. The second here

  688. is to listen to them.

  689. That's the L.

  690. To listen to them.

  691. Take an active interest

  692. in the people

  693. that you either

  694. work with

  695. or the people

  696. that you study with,

  697. you're going to school with,

  698. the people that you

  699. enjoy activities with,

  700. wherever you might be.

  701. Pray for opportunities

  702. to get to know

  703. others better.

  704. Be deliberate

  705. about asking good questions.

  706. Not just the kinds

  707. of questions

  708. that are surface.

  709. How was your day?

  710. How's your family?

  711. Those kinds of things

  712. which are appropriate

  713. and good

  714. but more meaningful questions.

  715. That relationships

  716. go deeper.

  717. Not just how are you doing

  718. but hey,

  719. I noticed that

  720. this is taking place

  721. over here.

  722. How is that going for you?

  723. How can I encourage you?

  724. I imagine that

  725. you're struggling

  726. because of this.

  727. I noticed this

  728. and I'd like to know more.

  729. Digging below the surface,

  730. asking deeper questions,

  731. cultivating a relationship

  732. that goes more

  733. than just a surface level,

  734. really taking an interest

  735. in the people

  736. that God has put you

  737. in community with

  738. so that you can come

  739. to know them

  740. and grow in compassion

  741. for them

  742. as the Lord

  743. had compassion for us.

  744. The E is

  745. eat with them.

  746. Eat with them.

  747. There's something

  748. about a good meal

  749. that opens the door.

  750. Opens the door

  751. for relationship.

  752. It kind of helps

  753. to take away

  754. any of the distractions.

  755. It helps to remove

  756. some of the pressure

  757. of that interaction.

  758. It helps to allow

  759. those things

  760. to be a little less formal.

  761. God has designed it that way.

  762. It's His design

  763. and we need to press in

  764. to this design

  765. and learn the benefits

  766. of fellowship

  767. and hospitality

  768. and eating good meals together

  769. that stimulate

  770. deeper conversations.

  771. The first S

  772. is to serve them.

  773. That means we should

  774. look for opportunities

  775. to help

  776. come alongside

  777. and meet

  778. actual physical needs

  779. for our neighbors.

  780. Depending upon the season

  781. maybe that means

  782. raking the leaves

  783. or mowing a lawn

  784. or shoveling the walk.

  785. Maybe it's simple things

  786. like making a meal

  787. and going to

  788. maybe watching a pet.

  789. I don't know.

  790. Fill in the blank.

  791. You can find ways

  792. to actually serve

  793. your neighbors.

  794. It follows the pattern

  795. of the Lord Jesus

  796. who came not to be served

  797. but to serve

  798. and to give His life

  799. a ransom for many.

  800. As we have the heart

  801. of the Lord Jesus

  802. in serving our neighbors

  803. you will come to find

  804. that that helps

  805. also be a gateway

  806. not only to meet

  807. tangible needs

  808. but to demonstrate

  809. your concern

  810. for your neighbors

  811. so they want

  812. to know you more.

  813. And then finally

  814. when all those pieces

  815. are in place

  816. you will find

  817. this last component

  818. will be very easy

  819. for you

  820. and that is

  821. to share your story

  822. of grace.

  823. Share the gospel

  824. with them.

  825. It says in Acts 2.11

  826. that we keep hearing

  827. them tell us

  828. in our own language

  829. the mighty works

  830. of God.

  831. Well

  832. that's the opportunity

  833. that God will give

  834. all of us.

  835. Being able to tell

  836. the mighty works

  837. of God

  838. because those doors

  839. will become open.

  840. God will create crisis

  841. in some way

  842. in their life

  843. and when that happens

  844. if you have developed

  845. and nurtured

  846. a friendship

  847. who are they going

  848. to ask for help?

  849. Who are they going

  850. to bring their questions

  851. to?

  852. They're going to bring

  853. their questions

  854. to you

  855. and God will have

  856. given you

  857. a golden opportunity

  858. to share

  859. the mighty works

  860. of God

  861. that he's accomplished

  862. in your life

  863. and open the door

  864. for a chance

  865. to share the gospel.

  866. One of the most

  867. powerful ways

  868. that we can do this

  869. is through

  870. our personal testimonies.

  871. Your story

  872. of how Jesus

  873. is the hero

  874. in bringing you salvation

  875. delivering you

  876. from your sin

  877. and as we develop

  878. those stories of grace

  879. or those testimonies

  880. you'll find that

  881. that would be

  882. a very easy gateway

  883. for you

  884. to share the gospel.

  885. Any of you

  886. who haven't yet

  887. created a testimony

  888. or those of you

  889. who you created

  890. your testimony

  891. a very long time ago

  892. and aren't acquainted

  893. with it anymore

  894. I want to just encourage you

  895. we have a new tool

  896. that we're developing

  897. so that you can

  898. do this more easily.

  899. Pastor David

  900. is putting that together

  901. and anyone

  902. who's interested

  903. in a kind of

  904. a simpler model

  905. of how to put

  906. your testimony together

  907. kind of leading you

  908. through a set of questions

  909. that may be

  910. a real benefit to you.

  911. This summer

  912. we'd like to prioritize

  913. this purpose

  914. of evangelism

  915. and neighboring

  916. by inviting you

  917. to meet with one another.

  918. So Caleb

  919. if I can have that

  920. next slide

  921. we're going to call this

  922. Won't You Be My Neighbor?

  923. And any of you

  924. who've maybe

  925. I'm dating myself here

  926. Mr. Rogers

  927. I'm sure

  928. most of you

  929. younger kids

  930. have no idea

  931. who Mr. Rogers is

  932. but he would

  933. he would ask

  934. this question

  935. Won't You Be My Neighbor?

  936. And he would sing

  937. a little ditty

  938. which I will not

  939. I will not do for you.

  940. During the summertime

  941. the last several years

  942. what we have done

  943. is we've had something

  944. called Sunday Nights

  945. in the Park

  946. and that's been a great way

  947. for us to enjoy

  948. fellowship together.

  949. This year

  950. what we like to do

  951. is maybe switch gears

  952. a bit

  953. and instead of

  954. doing it in one place

  955. we want to encourage you

  956. to do fellowship

  957. in lots of different places

  958. with the friends

  959. and families

  960. of your choice.

  961. So still

  962. twice

  963. a month

  964. and the first

  965. the first time

  966. you meet

  967. on that

  968. during the month

  969. we want to encourage you

  970. to meet with another family

  971. or group of families

  972. here from Maranatha

  973. growing in fellowship

  974. growing in relationship

  975. enjoying a meal

  976. going out

  977. and maybe going

  978. to a game together

  979. doing something together

  980. that stimulates

  981. some measure

  982. of Christian community.

  983. Then that next Sunday

  984. the second Sunday

  985. of that month

  986. whatever

  987. whatever

  988. week you choose

  989. we would like to encourage you

  990. to still meet

  991. with that family

  992. but invite somebody

  993. that doesn't know Christ

  994. and the goal

  995. is to do

  996. what we see here

  997. in Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2:47

  998. verse 47

  999. and that is

  1000. when people

  1001. the unsaved people

  1002. see

  1003. your fellowshipping together

  1004. your relationship

  1005. with one another

  1006. they see how God

1007. is working in your hearts

  1008. and creating

  1009. Christian community

  1010. that the favor

1011. that God has given to you

1012. they will be able to see

  1013. and in some way

1014. be able to participate in

  1015. in joy

  1016. so that God might

  1017. draw their hearts

  1018. to a saving knowledge

  1019. of Jesus Christ

  1020. himself.

  1021. This QR code

  1022. that we have here

  1023. we want to encourage

  1024. everybody

  1025. who is at least

  1026. thinking about this

  1027. whether you have

  1028. families in mind

  1029. already or not

  1030. we want to encourage

  1031. you to register

  1032. so that

  1033. two things can happen

  1034. one we know

  1035. who is registered

1036. and who is a part of this

  1037. and two

  1038. for those of you

1039. who want to be a part of it

  1040. but don't know of a family

  1041. that you could

  1042. partner with

  1043. then we can

  1044. access

  1045. this other resource

  1046. and be able

  1047. to pair you up

  1048. with others

  1049. who would like

1050. to do this as well.

  1051. This is an experiment

  1052. but I think

1053. this might be a great way

1054. for us to get to know

  1055. each other better

  1056. and to see

1057. how easy it can be

  1058. to neighbor

  1059. in our communities.

1060. So we want to encourage you

  1061. to do this.

  1062. There will be a

  1063. Miranatha Minute article

  1064. that will come out

1065. in the next week or so

  1066. about this too.

  1067. So that's the purpose

  1068. of the church.

  1069. That's what God

1070. has called us to do.

1071. Now I want to turn

  1072. our attention

1073. in this last few moments

  1074. to this final question.

  1075. Who is the church?

  1076. If God has given

  1077. these objectives

  1078. to his people

1079. well who are his people

1080. and how do we know?

  1081. Well what happened

  1082. in Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1083. was not invisible.

  1084. It wasn't vague.

  1085. It wasn't artificial.

  1086. It was real.

  1087. It was physical.

  1088. It was obvious.

  1089. This group of individuals

  1090. who gathered together.

1091. Now what was true of them?

1092. And there are seven things

  1093. that were true

1094. and I want to just work

  1095. through these things

  1096. quickly and briefly.

  1097. Who is the church?

  1098. First,

  1099. the church is those

  1100. who are saved

  1101. by grace

  1102. through faith.

  1103. Those who are saved

  1104. by grace

  1105. through faith.

  1106. We understand

  1107. that we are deserving

  1108. of God's wrath.

  1109. That all have sinned

  1110. and come short

1111. of the glory of God

  1112. and what we deserve

  1113. because of our sin

  1114. is God's punishment.

  1115. God's wrath.

  1116. But,

  1117. he made a way

  1118. through his son,

  1119. Jesus,

1120. who lived a perfect life,

  1121. who died the death

  1122. that we deserved,

  1123. who then rose again

  1124. and is now seated

1125. at the right hand of God

  1126. so that we

  1127. can enjoy the benefits

  1128. of salvation.

  1129. That salvation happens

1130. not because we earn it,

  1131. but it happens

  1132. because of God's grace.

  1133. And we access

  1134. that salvation

  1135. through faith

  1136. in Jesus Christ.

  1137. Christ.

  1138. And once that happens,

  1139. we recognize

  1140. that Christ paid

  1141. for everything.

  1142. It's not deserved

  1143. and so there's nothing

1144. for us to boast about.

  1145. God gets the glory.

  1146. If you belong

  1147. to the church,

1148. this has happened for you.

1149. This is the starting point

  1150. for you.

  1151. This is the gateway

  1152. for us to experience

  1153. the benefits

  1154. of what Christ

  1155. has accomplished

  1156. for us.

  1157. Second,

  1158. those who are part

  1159. of the church

1160. are those who have been

  1161. placed into a body

  1162. with Christ

  1163. as the head.

1164. Been placed into a body

  1165. with Christ

  1166. as a head.

  1167. And this has already

  1168. happened for those

  1169. of you who believe.

  1170. This is something

  1171. that Christ has already

  1172. accomplished for us

  1173. who believe.

  1174. He's placed us

  1175. into a body

  1176. that you belong

  1177. to God.

  1178. And because you belong

  1179. to God,

  1180. you belong

  1181. to the body

  1182. of Christ.

  1183. You belong

  1184. to the people

  1185. who Christ

  1186. has drawn

  1187. into relationship

  1188. with Him.

  1189. And that while

  1190. Jesus came

  1191. in the flesh,

  1192. that the outworking

  1193. of this spiritual

  1194. life that He's

  1195. produced in us

  1196. also has a physical

  1197. dimension to it.

  1198. We see that

  1199. in Colossians 1,

    Colossians 1:18

  1200. verse 18

  1201. when it says,

  1202. and He

  1203. is the head

  1204. of the body,

  1205. the church.

  1206. He is the beginning,

  1207. the firstborn

  1208. from the dead,

  1209. that in everything

  1210. He might be

  1211. preeminent.

  1212. Jesus is the head

  1213. of the church.

  1214. He is the head

  1215. of the body.

  1216. He is preeminent.

  1217. He is overall.

  1218. He is the one

  1219. who has the right

  1220. to call the shots.

  1221. And because

  1222. He is the head

1223. and we are the body,

  1224. the body

  1225. obeys the head.

  1226. That's our next

  1227. point here.

  1228. The churches

  1229. are those

  1230. who follow

  1231. Christ's instructions.

  1232. They follow

  1233. God's instructions

  1234. because He

  1235. is the head

  1236. and we belong

  1237. to Him

  1238. as the body.

  1239. And we saw

  1240. all these

  1241. one another commands

  1242. as we worked

  1243. through this

  1244. last week.

  1245. It is

  1246. encouraging

  1247. and overwhelming

  1248. the number

  1249. of things

  1250. that we are

  1251. called to do

  1252. for one another.

  1253. Bear one another's

  1254. burdens,

  1255. encourage one another,

  1256. care for one another,

  1257. admonish one another,

  1258. exhort one another.

  1259. And then we find

  1260. that this is

  1261. the will of God

  1262. for you.

  1263. This is what

  1264. God has called

  1265. us to.

  1266. You see,

  1267. the Lord Jesus

  1268. modeled a life

  1269. of perfect

  1270. submission to the

  1271. Father.

  1272. And He calls

  1273. us and

  1274. indwells us

  1275. with His Spirit.

  1276. He empowers us

  1277. to do this,

  1278. to carry out

  1279. these commands.

  1280. And so Christ

  1281. has given us

  1282. some commands.

  1283. John chapter 14

    John 14:15

  1284. verse 15

  1285. says this,

  1286. If you love

  1287. me,

  1288. you will keep

  1289. my commandments.

  1290. Those who love

  1291. Jesus

  1292. will do

  1293. what Jesus

  1294. says.

  1295. And John

  1296. in his epistle

  1297. says this,

  1298. 1 John chapter 5

    1 John 5:3

  1299. verse 3,

  1300. For this is

  1301. the love of God,

  1302. that we keep

  1303. His commandments,

  1304. and His commandments

  1305. are not burdensome.

  1306. You see,

  1307. when you're in love

  1308. with someone,

  1309. doing hard things

  1310. is not so hard.

  1311. It becomes

  1312. pretty easy.

  1313. And the more

  1314. we grow in love

  1315. for our Lord Jesus,

  1316. the easier

  1317. obedience becomes.

  1318. It's not burdensome.

  1319. It's something

  1320. that we delight in,

  1321. something we enjoy.

  1322. fourth,

  1323. those who are

  1324. part of the church

  1325. are those who

  1326. pursue spiritual

  1327. maturity.

  1328. They pursue

  1329. spiritual maturity

  1330. because the word

  1331. of God is living.

  1332. It's active.

  1333. It's sharper

  1334. than a two-edged sword.

  1335. And because the word

  1336. of God is living

  1337. and it comes

  1338. and does something

  1339. for His people,

  1340. it creates

  1341. living creatures.

  1342. People who are alive.

  1343. People who grow.

  1344. People who are

  1345. stimulated.

  1346. People who grow

  1347. in spiritual maturity

  1348. and love for God

1349. and love for one another.

  1350. We see that

  1351. in Ephesians 4,

    Ephesians 4:15

  1352. verse 15 and 16.

  1353. It says,

  1354. Rather,

  1355. speaking the truth

  1356. in love,

1357. we are to grow up

  1358. in every way

  1359. into Him

  1360. who is the head,

  1361. into Christ,

1362. from whom the whole body,

  1363. joined and held together

  1364. by every joint

1365. with which it is equipped,

  1366. when each part

  1367. is working properly,

  1368. makes the body grow

  1369. so that it builds

  1370. itself up in love.

1371. Do you see all those

  1372. connective,

  1373. living,

  1374. active kinds of words?

  1375. That the church

  1376. is growing up.

  1377. The church

  1378. is joined together.

  1379. The church

  1380. is equipped

  1381. and working properly.

  1382. The church

  1383. is the one

  1384. who is making

  1385. the body grow

1386. and it's all bound together,

  1387. starting

  1388. and finishing

  1389. with love.

  1390. That we grow

  1391. in love.

  1392. We grow

  1393. in spiritual maturity

  1394. as we're growing

  1395. in Christ.

  1396. Fifth,

  1397. those who are part

  1398. of the church

  1399. are those who accept

  1400. personal accountability.

  1401. They accept

  1402. personal accountability.

  1403. You see,

  1404. there are real instructions

  1405. in how to engage

  1406. one another,

  1407. not only in caring

  1408. for one another's needs,

  1409. but especially

  1410. in how to protect

  1411. one another

  1412. from the dangers

  1413. of sin.

  1414. We're told

  1415. to exhort

  1416. one another.

  1417. We're told

  1418. to encourage.

  1419. We're told

  1420. to admonish

  1421. one another.

  1422. We're told

  1423. to restore

  1424. one another

  1425. in the spirit

  1426. of gentleness.

  1427. We're told

  1428. to rebuke

  1429. one another.

  1430. We're told

  1431. to strengthen

  1432. one another.

  1433. All of these words

  1434. that have

  1435. accountability

  1436. in mind.

  1437. And those of you

  1438. who are parents

  1439. understand

  1440. how this works.

  1441. That fathers

  1442. are to raise up

  1443. their children

  1444. in the nurture

  1445. and admonition

  1446. of the Lord.

  1447. There's some

  1448. accountability there.

  1449. There's some

  1450. instruction there.

  1451. There's responsibility

  1452. of parents

  1453. to their kids

  1454. to help them grow.

  1455. And as spiritual

  1456. leaders,

  1457. we have a responsibility

  1458. to you.

  1459. And as part

  1460. of the body,

  1461. you have a responsibility

  1462. to one another.

  1463. Hebrews 13,

  1464. 17 says this,

  1465. Obey your leaders

  1466. and submit to them

  1467. for they are keeping

  1468. watch over your souls

  1469. as those

  1470. who will have

  1471. to give an account.

  1472. Let them do it

  1473. with joy

  1474. and not with groaning

  1475. for that would be

  1476. of no advantage

  1477. to you.

  1478. God has put us

  1479. in community

  1480. with one another

  1481. for the sake

  1482. of spiritual protection

  1483. and safety

  1484. and flourishing

1485. and we have a responsibility

  1486. to be accountable

  1487. to one another

  1488. in that way.

  1489. Sixth,

  1490. those who are part

  1491. of the church

  1492. are those who exercise

  1493. their spiritual gifts.

  1494. We saw that

  1495. at the beginning

1496. of chapter 2 in Acts.

  1497. We saw this church

  1498. that was indwelt

  1499. by the Holy Spirit

1500. and what do they do?

  1501. They start practicing

  1502. spiritual gifts

1503. that God has given us

  1504. as believers

  1505. a gift

  1506. through the indwelling

  1507. power of His Spirit.

  1508. It's not meant

1509. to be put on the shelf.

  1510. It's meant

1511. to be put to work.

  1512. God has given us

  1513. this great responsibility

  1514. and privilege.

  1515. We find that

  1516. in 1 Peter 4

    1 Peter 4:10

  1517. verses 10 and 11.

  1518. It says this,

  1519. As each has received

  1520. a gift,

  1521. use it

  1522. to serve one another

  1523. as good stewards

  1524. of God's very grace.

  1525. Whoever speaks

  1526. is one who speaks

  1527. oracles of God.

  1528. Whoever serves

  1529. is one who serves

  1530. by the strength

  1531. that God supplies

  1532. in order that

  1533. in everything,

  1534. here it is,

  1535. the goal,

  1536. God may be glorified

  1537. through Jesus Christ.

  1538. To Him belong

  1539. glory and dominion

  1540. forever and ever.

  1541. We exercise

  1542. our spiritual gifts

  1543. not just because

  1544. we have them,

  1545. but we do it

  1546. because of the glory

  1547. of God.

  1548. And finally,

  1549. those who are part

  1550. of the church

  1551. are those who make

  1552. the gospel visible.

1553. They make the gospel visible.

  1554. You see,

  1555. our belonging together,

  1556. our togetherness,

  1557. helps to reinforce

  1558. what Christ has accomplished

  1559. through His work.

  1560. If His work

1561. of dying on the cross

  1562. and rising again

  1563. brings unity

  1564. to the church,

  1565. then we demonstrate

  1566. the outworking

  1567. of that gospel power

  1568. by being together,

  1569. belonging together.

  1570. John chapter 17

    John 17:20

  1571. verses 20 and 21

  1572. says this,

  1573. this is Christ's prayer,

  1574. I do not ask

  1575. for these only,

  1576. but also for those

  1577. who believe in me

  1578. through their word,

  1579. that they may all

  1580. be one,

  1581. just as you,

  1582. Father,

  1583. are in me

  1584. and I in you,

  1585. that they also

  1586. may be in us,

  1587. so that the world

  1588. may believe

1589. that you have sent me.

1590. The power of the gospel

  1591. that's noticeable,

  1592. observable

  1593. through a people

  1594. who are united together.

  1595. So this group

  1596. of gathered believers

  1597. are here

  1598. not just loosely affiliated,

  1599. they're gathered together

1600. as those who are connected,

  1601. who are bound,

  1602. who have this obligation

  1603. to one another.

  1604. And so membership

  1605. then becomes

  1606. a visible expression

  1607. of our belonging together.

  1608. membership is a way

  1609. for us to say,

  1610. God has not just

  1611. accomplished something,

  1612. but we recognize

  1613. the importance

  1614. of what he's done

1615. and we want to affirm

  1616. that in our expression

  1617. of opting in

  1618. and becoming

  1619. a visible part,

  1620. an active part

  1621. of the fellowship

  1622. that God has already

  1623. connected us to.

  1624. Many of you heard

  1625. the expression,

  1626. membership

  1627. has its privileges,

  1628. right?

  1629. And we're acquainted

  1630. with membership.

  1631. You'll either have

  1632. gym memberships

  1633. or shopping memberships

  1634. or phone plans,

  1635. whatever memberships

  1636. you're a part of,

  1637. but those memberships

1638. in this day and age

  1639. have a purpose.

  1640. It gives us access,

  1641. it gives us discounts,

  1642. it gives us convenience,

  1643. but as long as

  1644. those memberships

  1645. serve us well,

  1646. we keep them.

  1647. But as soon as

  1648. those memberships

  1649. no longer serve us

1650. the way we want to,

  1651. we opt out

  1652. and we switch allegiance.

  1653. That's kind of

  1654. what we've been

  1655. conditioned to do

  1656. as it relates

  1657. to membership

  1658. in the world.

  1659. But the membership

  1660. that Christ has created

  1661. is a membership

  1662. of belonging

  1663. that happens

1664. as long as we are

1665. a part of the family

  1666. of God.

1667. And as long as God

  1668. has put us in

  1669. community with one another.

  1670. There is

  1671. the universal church

  1672. as it were.

  1673. We belong to Christ.

  1674. We belong to all

  1675. the believers

1676. that are in the world.

  1677. But we recognize

  1678. the beauty

  1679. and uniqueness

  1680. of the local fellowships

1681. that God has put us

  1682. in connection with

  1683. and the joy

  1684. of demonstrating

  1685. that commitment

  1686. to that local fellowship

  1687. through membership.

  1688. One of the statistics

  1689. that I found

  1690. from the Gallup poll

  1691. is that in 2023

  1692. only 45%

  1693. of Americans

  1694. said they belonged

  1695. to a formal

  1696. house of worship.

  1697. That doesn't even

  1698. include membership.

  1699. But in their minds

  1700. they were a part

  1701. of a fellowship.

  1702. That is down

  1703. from 73%

  1704. in 1937

  1705. and 70%

  1706. as recently

  1707. as 1999.

  1708. That is the spirit

  1709. of the age

  1710. to be disconnected

  1711. to be autonomous

  1712. to be independent.

  1713. But these people

  1714. in Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1715. understood

  1716. that the church

  1717. was something

  1718. entirely different.

1719. It was not a product

  1720. to consume.

  1721. It wasn't a club

  1722. to sample.

  1723. It wasn't a place

  1724. just to access

  1725. with benefits

  1726. but a body

  1727. to belong to.

  1728. In a world

  1729. that idolizes

  1730. independence

  1731. and freedom

  1732. and autonomy

  1733. membership says

  1734. something entirely

  1735. different.

  1736. It says

  1737. I want to live

  1738. the Christian life

  1739. together.

  1740. I want

  1741. to live

  1742. the Christian life

  1743. and not

  1744. remain autonomous.

  1745. Not to remain

  1746. unknown.

  1747. Not to avoid

  1748. obligation.

  1749. I want to be

  1750. connected to

  1751. the body

  1752. that Christ

  1753. has connected

  1754. me to.

  1755. I want to be

  1756. joined to Christ's

  1757. people in a way

  1758. that is visible

  1759. and meaningful.

  1760. So I would

  1761. encourage

  1762. those of you

  1763. who are part

  1764. of this fellowship

  1765. to demonstrate

  1766. the beauty

  1767. of what Christ

  1768. has accomplished

  1769. and to carry out

  1770. the purposes

  1771. that God

  1772. has given to us.

  1773. For those of you

  1774. who are still

  1775. unsure

  1776. we have several

  1777. resources in the

  1778. back

  1779. as you're walking

  1780. out towards the

  1781. lobby.

  1782. I want to

  1783. encourage you

  1784. to look at those.

  1785. Some of those

  1786. are free resources.

  1787. Some of them

  1788. are not

  1789. but they're very

  1790. helpful in just

  1791. helping.

  1792. What is membership?

  1793. What's it about?

  1794. Why is it

  1795. important?

  1796. And is this

  1797. something that I

  1798. should consider?

  1799. It's been

  1800. a good

  1801. it's been good

  1802. for my own

  1803. heart to

  1804. remind myself

  1805. of what is

  1806. the church

  1807. and what is

  1808. my commitment

  1809. to the people

  1810. that God

  1811. has put me

  1812. in community

  1813. with.

  1814. May God

  1815. help us

  1816. as we

  1817. consider

  1818. his word

  1819. and apply it

  1820. to our lives.

  1821. Let's pray.

  1822. Father thank you

  1823. for the scripture.

  1824. Thank you for

  1825. stimulating us

  1826. in such a way

  1827. convicting us

  1828. in such a way

  1829. that reminds us

  1830. of our

  1831. responsibility

  1832. first to you

  1833. in bringing glory

  1834. to you

  1835. but also

  1836. our responsibility

  1837. to the people

  1838. you put us

  1839. in fellowship

  1840. with.

  1841. May we

  1842. please you

  1843. and may we

  1844. be used of you

  1845. in a way

  1846. that makes the

  1847. gospel look

  1848. beautiful

  1849. and our savior

  1850. look precious.

  1851. we pray

  1852. these things

  1853. in Jesus

  1854. name.

  1855. Amen.

  1856. God bless you.

  1857. Have a great week.

  1858. Thank you.
