  1. Good morning, welcome.

  2. I know John just prayed, but I want to just ask the Lord for a little bit more.

  3. ! Father, in a moment we are opening your word.

  4. And we recognize that this is your very heart. You've revealed yourself to us through your word.

  5. So this morning we want to lift up your word faithfully.

  6. We ask, Lord, that you, your spirit would work in us.

  7. You would have your desired effect in our lives. That we would look more like Jesus Christ.

  8. And we do recognize right now, whether here or at home,

  9. there are some among us who are really struggling.

  10. Some whose faith is just right on the brink.

  11. And God, we lift them before you.

  12. You are our sure foundation.

  13. There is no other hope.

  14. There is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

  15. We love you.

  16. We honor you.

  17. Father, we pray this morning might be to the glory of your son, Jesus Christ.

  18. We pray in his name. Amen.

  19. Well, I'm Tom Zentz, one of your deacons.

  20. Carrie, my wife, and I have enjoyed being members here at Maranatha for about 42 years.

  21. I'm sorry, but that's hard to believe.

  22. One of the things about getting older is the area of forgetfulness, especially names.

  23. And so forgive me if I come up to you and ask you your name.

  24. And you've been like a 12-year member here or something, you know.

  25. But names.

  26. And then the Lord refreshed my memory this week.

  27. I was helping Carrie with laundry and pulled out some of her stockings or socks.

  28. And I couldn't remember where they go.

  29. And she said, well, we've only been married 42 years.

  30. So you should know where these go, right?

  31. So forgetfulness is something that we all struggle with, isn't it?

  32. We need days like tomorrow, by the way.

  33. Just as constant reminders so that we don't forget to remember those who have sacrificed their lives in service to our nation.

  34. If you'd allow me, I think it's fitting to remind us all of what Memorial Day in the United States is about.

  35. And then to use that to launch into our text this morning.

  36. Memorial Day is a national day of remembrance in the United States.

  37. It's set aside to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

  38. Its roots trace back to the years following the Civil War when Americans began decorating the graves with flowers of all these fallen soldiers.

  39. In fact, early tradition, we know it as Decoration Day.

  40. Over time, the observance expanded to honor all service members who gave their lives in every American conflict.

  41. And in 1971, it became an official federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May.

  42. We observe Memorial Day not simply as a long weekend, but as a moment to pause and reflect on the cost of freedom.

  43. It invites us to remember the courage, the sacrifice, the selflessness of those who never returned home.

  44. It invites us to express gratitude for the liberties their service helps secure.

  45. And whether through ceremonies, quiet reflection, or the national moment of remembrance at 3 o'clock on Memorial Day,

  46. this day calls the nation to honor the fallen and to carry forward the memory of their service with respect and gratitude.

  47. There have been many calls of remembrance throughout American history.

  48. As I was preparing for this, I got to thinking about different ones like, remember the Alamo.

  49. It was the battle cry of the Texas Revolution.

  50. It symbolized sacrifice and the fight for independence.

  51. Or maybe you remember this one.

  52. Remember the Maine.

  53. I bet most of you don't remember that one.

  54. That was the 1898 Spanish-American War outcry when the battleship, the USS Maine, was sunk in Havana Harbor.

  55. It propelled our nation into war.

  56. How about remember Pearl Harbor?

  57. December 7th, 1941, when the Japanese attacked us on U.S. soil.

  58. It inspired a nation to unity and resolve.

  59. More recently,

  60. Never Forget became the defining memorial phrase after that terrorist attack on American soil, September 11, 2001.

  61. It cost nearly 3,000 lives.

  62. These were all calls to remembrance.

  63. But, see, they're not just calls to remember.

  64. They're calls to respond.

  65. Similarly, throughout biblical history, there have been a number of calls.

  66. I have a list here.

  67. But, as I was preparing this, the scores of verses to remember, it's amazing.

  68. Deuteronomy chapter 8, the whole chapter is about remembering and not forgetting.

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  69. But, verses 1 and verse 18 say,

  70. Remember the Lord your God.

  71. It's a call to remember, but also to respond.

  72. Ecclesiastes 12, 1 says,

  73. Remember your Creator in the days of your youth.

  74. Exodus chapter 20, verse 8.

    Exodus 20:8

  75. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

  76. In 1 Chronicles chapter 16, in verse 12.

    1 Chronicles 16 chapter mention

  77. Remember the wondrous works that He has done.

  78. His miracles, all the judgments He's uttered.

  79. And then, down in verse 15.

  80. Remember His covenant forever.

  81. The word that He has commanded for a thousand generations.

  82. And then Jesus Himself said to His disciples there in the upper room,

  83. as they were partaking of that communion,

  84. He says,

  85. Do this in remembrance of me.

  86. I didn't have it on here, but remember Lot's wife, right?

  87. I always wondered about that verse.

  88. Why?

  89. You know, it's not Lot's wife in particular that you're supposed to remember.

  90. You know what you're supposed to remember?

  91. God is holy.

  92. This is a consequence of veering away from His character.

  93. Why do you think there's so many Bible verses calling God's people to remember?

  94. It's because we're so prone to forget, aren't we?

  95. This morning I'm here echoing Peter's sentiment from 2 Peter chapter 1, verses 12 through 13.

    2 Peter 1:12–13

  96. Let me just read it for you.

  97. Let me just pause.

  98. The things we're going to be talking about are things most of you already know.

  99. You know them.

  100. But I'm bringing them back to you by way of reminder.

  101. Peter continues.

  102. He says,

  103. Well, what truth is that?

  104. I'd invite you to open your Bibles, please, to 2 Timothy chapter 2.

    2 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  105. We'll be looking particularly at verse 8.

  106. If you have a pew Bible, it's page 995.

  107. And as you're turning there, 2 Timothy chapter 2,

    2 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  108. just remind you that Paul, he's an old soldier of the cross by now.

  109. He's sitting in a Roman prison, and he's writing to Timothy.

  110. And Timothy's a younger pastor.

  111. He's tired.

  112. He's discouraged by the ministry.

  113. He's under a lot of pressure.

  114. Paul's going to give him one central command.

  115. And here it is in verse 8.

  116. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead,

  117. the offspring of David as preached in my gospel.

  118. Period.

  119. The scripture here calls God's people to remember Jesus Christ.

  120. Not merely recalling factual information about Jesus Christ,

  121. but responding with our hearts, with our choices, and with our very lives.

  122. Remembering is always tied to a response.

  123. Devotion, love, obedience, worship, courage, faithfulness, resolve.

  124. I wonder, church, this morning for you,

  125. which of these responses does God want for you?

  126. And maybe there's something you're dealing with this morning.

  127. Some struggle, known or unknown.

  128. This morning, the Lord wants you to respond as you remember Jesus Christ.

  129. On a weekend built around remembrance, Paul's words ring out loudly.

  130. Timothy, don't forget to remember.

  131. Now, by way of context,

  132. before Paul ever tells Timothy about verse 8,

  133. he's going to give Timothy three images, three pictures.

  134. These are Memorial Day-like pictures of endurance.

  135. He's going to tell them about the soldier,

  136. about the athlete,

  137. and about the farmer.

  138. And there in verses 3 and 4,

  139. with this soldier image,

  140. Paul is telling Timothy,

  141. I want you to remember something.

  142. I want you to remember your commander.

  143. Let me read verses 3 and 4 for you.

  144. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

  145. No soldier gets entangled in the civilian pursuits

  146. since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.

  147. Paul's telling Timothy,

  148. there are three responses for the soldier who remembers his commander.

  149. Here they are.

  150. Endures hardship without complaint.

  151. The soldier accepts suffering as part of the mission.

  152. It's not an interruption to it.

  153. This good soldier, he stays focused.

  154. He's not getting entangled with all these civilian thoughts and ideas.

  155. And I will tell you,

  156. this is one of the ones that I struggle with.

  157. The disruptions,

  158. the distractions of life.

  159. Paul says,

  160. a good soldier keeps his eyes fixed on the mission.

  161. He's not divided by the distractions of ordinary life.

  162. A good soldier,

  163. Timothy,

  164. lives to please the one who enlisted him.

  165. Has Jesus Christ enlisted you into his family?

  166. Has he died for you?

  167. If he has,

  168. he's your commander.

  169. Listen to him.

  170. The good soldier's ultimate loyalty is not to comfort,

  171. but it's to his commander.

  172. This Memorial Day,

  173. we honor soldiers who gave everything

  174. because they remembered their mission and commander.

  175. They lived and they died

  176. with focus,

  177. courage,

  178. and devotion.

  179. Well,

  180. then Paul's going to tell Timothy about this next image.

  181. It's the image of an athlete.

  182. He's saying,

  183. Timothy,

  184. as an athlete,

  185. you must remember the rules.

  186. Verse 5 says,

  187. an athlete is not crowned

  188. unless he competes according to the rules.

  189. The word here for competes is this word,

  190. athleo.

  191. We get our word athletics from it.

  192. It describes the discipline

  193. and the integrity

  194. that it takes to do the job,

  195. to run the race.

  196. The athlete is faithful to his training effort

  197. with unrelenting pursuit.

  198. And guys,

  199. there's no shortcuts.

  200. This athlete,

  201. he follows the plan

  202. to win the prize.

  203. Been watching some of the basketball tournament.

  204. Some of you have,

  205. some of you don't care.

  206. But those basketball teams,

  207. they're meeting with their coaches

  208. and the coaches

  209. and the coaches are laying out

  210. their game plans, right?

  211. And the coach expects these athletes

  212. to play according to plan,

  213. to execute the plan.

  214. That's what we're talking about here.

  215. The athlete follows the plan

  216. to win the prize.

  217. He's directed by the playbook,

  218. not by personal preference.

  219. And our playbook

  220. is the very word of God.

  221. It's not how I feel.

  222. It's what does this say.

  223. And will I obey?

  224. The athlete realizes

  225. that it's not just about effort alone.

  226. You can have great effort,

  227. but if it's misdirected,

  228. if it's not skillfully directed,

  229. it can go really badly.

  230. We have a Southwest Church Golf League

  231. and I can put a tee in the ground,

  232. put a ball on top

  233. and I can stand in front of that ball

  234. and swing with all my effort.

  235. But if I don't swing with skill,

  236. it's not good.

  237. In fact,

  238. it could be out of bounds

  239. easily.

  240. And so you have to learn the skill.

  241. You have to learn the grip.

  242. You have to learn the stance,

  243. the swing and so on.

  244. Zeal without obeying the rules

  245. can get you disqualified.

  246. You're in your Bibles

  247. in 2 Timothy 2.

  248. If you go down to verses,

  249. I don't have it up here.

  250. It's like verses 17 and 18.

  251. There are two guys

  252. that are mentioned there.

  253. Hymenaeus and Philetus,

  254. I think those are names.

  255. You know what it says about them?

  256. They swerved from what?

  257. The truth.

  258. They didn't play by the rules

  259. and they were disqualified.

  260. The athlete competes

  261. with discipline,

  262. with integrity,

  263. and effort,

  264. skilled effort.

  265. He executes according to the plan

  266. in order to win the prize.

  267. Well, the third image

  268. Paul gives to Timothy

  269. is one of a farmer.

  270. He's telling Timothy here,

  271. I want you to remember

  272. the reward, Timothy.

  273. Let me just read verse 6.

  274. It is the hard-working farmer

  275. who ought to have

  276. the first share of the crops.

  277. Now, growing up in Indiana,

  278. I met a lot of farmers.

  279. A lot of farmers went to our church.

  280. These farmers, for them,

  281. they would work late,

  282. work early.

  283. They'd work when it's dark.

  284. They'd work unseen.

  285. And there was nobody there

  286. applausing them

  287. after they were done

  288. with their work for the day.

  289. There was no crowd.

  290. There was only faithfulness

  291. in the field.

  292. Day after day,

  293. laboring to the point of exhaustion.

  294. It's hard work.

  295. And that's what this

  296. hard-working expression means.

  297. Laboring to the point

  298. where you just can't take it anymore.

  299. You're just exhausted.

  300. Paul's telling Timothy,

  301. this farmer,

  302. he trusts and he prays

  303. that a good harvest will come.

  304. Seeds are planted.

  305. He has faith

  306. that the soil will bear

  307. the harvest.

  308. The farmer,

  309. he patiently labors

  310. to produce an abundant reward.

  311. Psalm 126.6,

  312. you may remember this.

  313. He who sows in tears

  314. shall reap in joy.

  315. The yield is worth the weight.

  316. Wait on the Lord.

  317. So the farmer,

  318. he works early,

  319. works late,

  320. works unseen.

  321. He trusts

  322. that the harvest will come.

  323. So what's Paul's point?

  324. Well, there in verse 7,

  325. he says this.

  326. Timothy,

  327. I want you to think over

  328. what I say.

  329. Think very carefully

  330. what I say.

  331. For the Lord will give you

  332. understanding.

  333. These three images

  334. describe the kind of endurance

  335. that Paul calls Timothy to.

  336. And they also beautifully reflect

  337. the character of Jesus Christ himself.

  338. Think about this.

  339. Jesus Christ was the perfect soldier

  340. who remembered his commander.

  341. Not my will be done,

  342. but yours.

  343. Jesus Christ was the perfect athlete.

  344. He played by the rules.

  345. And I don't use that word loosely.

  346. He followed the rules.

  347. He could have called down help

  348. there in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  349. He was also the perfect farmer.

  350. He remembered that the reward

  351. was worth it.

  352. Isn't that Hebrews chapter 12?

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  353. He was looking for that reward.

  354. Maranatha Baptist Church,

  355. you and I are also called

  356. to remember these things

  357. and let these images

  358. give us understanding.

  359. Let them shape us.

  360. Let them remind us

  361. of what faithfulness,

  362. of what Christ himself looks like.

  363. And then this leads

  364. to Paul's next point there

  365. in verse 8.

  366. And now Paul gives this command.

  367. It's going to be a command

  368. that anchors the whole passage.

  369. Let me read verse 8 for you.

  370. Remember Jesus Christ,

  371. risen from the dead,

  372. the offspring of David.

  373. The word remember here,

  374. it's a little bit hard to say.

  375. It's neumonet or something like that.

  376. You don't have to say it correctly.

  377. It means more

  378. than just call to mind though.

  379. It's to continually,

  380. remember.

  381. It's to have this,

  382. this always at the front

  383. of your center

  384. and focus Jesus Christ.

  385. Constantly being reminded

  386. that Jesus is there.

  387. And then also

  388. to let this recalling

  389. of Jesus Christ

  390. shape your identity.

  391. We don't do it

  392. in our family so much,

  393. but I've heard

  394. of other families say,

  395. hey, you remember you're a,

  396. I hope there's no Millers out here.

  397. Remember you're a Miller.

  398. Remember you're a Young.

  399. Remember you're a Smith,

  400. whatever.

  401. What is that supposed to mean?

  402. It says,

  403. in your remembering,

  404. there's an action,

  405. there's a response

  406. that I expect of you.

  407. There's a lifestyle

  408. that you should have

  409. because you are this,

  410. you're mine.

  411. Let this recalling of Jesus Christ

  412. shape your identity,

  413. shape your decisions,

  414. shape your actions.

  415. This word,

  416. pneumoneo,

  417. it's the same word

  418. we get from this English word,

  419. and maybe you know this,

  420. maybe you don't,

  421. mnemonic.

  422. You say,

  423. well,

  424. I only know that one.

  425. Well,

  426. you use it all the time.

  427. When Pastor Conoyer

  428. was up here,

  429. I don't know how many times

  430. I heard him say,

  431. lefty,

  432. loosey,

  433. righty,

  434. what is it?

  435. Tidy.

  436. Because we forget,

  437. right?

  438. There are five great lakes.

  439. So you remember,

  440. homes.

  441. And so you have Huron,

  442. Ontario,

  443. Michigan,

  444. Erie,

  445. and Superior.

  446. We use mnemonics

  447. all the time.

  448. And Paul's saying here

  449. to Timothy,

  450. hey,

  451. don't let Jesus Christ

  452. slip from your memory.

  453. Keep him always

  454. at the forefront,

  455. front and center,

  456. continually.

  457. Don't forget

  458. to remember him,

  459. Timothy.

  460. Don't get distracted

  461. by other things.

  462. And then from this one verse

  463. in verse eight,

  464. there come three challenges,

  465. each one with an active response.

  466. If you're in your outline,

  467. this is point C.

  468. The conduct

  469. that comes

  470. from remembering Jesus.

  471. We see right at the outset,

  472. remember Jesus Christ.

  473. It's interesting

  474. that Paul starts

  475. with a name.

  476. Not a doctrine.

  477. Not a system.

  478. Not a ministry strategy.

  479. A name.

  480. The name.

  481. A person.

  482. It's the person.

  483. It's Jesus Christ,

  484. the King of kings

  485. and Lord of lords.

  486. That's what matters,

  487. Timothy.

  488. That's what's going to be

  489. your sure foundation

  490. that we just sang about.

  491. It's Jesus Christ.

  492. When life gets hard,

  493. Timothy,

  494. remember Jesus' compassion.

  495. He bore our sorrows

  496. and our griefs

  497. and he loved us

  498. to the end.

  499. He loved us

  500. when we were unlovable.

  501. Isn't that right?

  502. Remember his authority,

  503. Timothy.

  504. All power in heaven

  505. and under heaven.

  506. They're his.

  507. And by extension,

  508. they're yours

  509. because he gives you

  510. his authority.

  511. Remember his nearness,

  512. Timothy.

  513. He said,

  514. I'm with you always.

  515. I'm with you always.

  516. To the end of the age,

  517. I'm with you.

  518. Remember his sacrifice.

  519. He gave himself up fully.

  520. He held nothing back.

  521. Remember his lordship,

  522. Timothy.

  523. Jesus Christ

  524. is Lord of lords.

  525. He is Lord

  526. over every other name.

  527. He is Lord

  528. over every other king.

  529. And he is to be obeyed.

  530. This Memorial Day,

  531. we honor fallen soldiers

  532. by remembering

  533. who they were.

  534. We honor Christ Jesus

  535. by remembering

  536. who he is.

  537. He is our Lord

  538. and Savior.

  539. We remember him,

  540. not just facts about him.

  541. We trust him.

  542. We obey him.

  543. We submit

  544. so that we're being

  545. transformed by him.

  546. What's to be the response?

  547. It's loyalty.

  548. Stay faithful.

  549. Stay with him

  550. when culture pushes you

  551. to compromise.

  552. Lovingly obey

  553. with humility,

  554. living out Christ

  555. in you

  556. before others.

  557. Paul then says,

  558. Timothy,

  559. not only do I want you

  560. to remember his person,

  561. I want you to remember

  562. his power.

  563. And as a result,

  564. I want you to conduct

  565. yourself

  566. with confidence.

  567. The scripture says

  568. here in verse 8,

  569. this is Jesus Christ

  570. risen from the dead.

  571. He's alive,

  572. isn't he?

  573. He is alive,

  574. church.

  575. He's not dead.

  576. And he's praying for you.

  577. He's actively involved

  578. in your life.

  579. He is with you.

  580. This is the heart

  581. of our faith.

  582. Paul's reminding Timothy,

  583. you serve

  584. a risen king.

  585. Death is defeated.

  586. fear has lost its grip.

  587. And the hardship

  588. that you're experiencing,

  589. it's not the end.

  590. I was just talking

  591. to somebody this morning.

  592. Things are tough.

  593. 10,000 years from now,

  594. we're going to have

  595. a different perspective,

  596. aren't we?

  597. The things that we think

  598. are so impossible now,

  599. they're not going to be

  600. much of a weight

  601. at all.

  602. They won't be a weight.

  603. What's to be

  604. our response?

  605. Loyalty.

  606. Are you loyal

  607. to Jesus Christ?

  608. Well, Timothy,

  609. he's discouraged.

  610. Paul says,

  611. lift up your eyes,

  612. Timothy.

  613. I want you to lift up

  614. your eyes of faith.

  615. Remember the empty tomb.

  616. You know,

  617. this Memorial Day,

  618. we remember the cost

  619. of freedom.

  620. But we also remember

  621. with thankfulness

  622. the hope

  623. that those who've

  624. sacrificed their lives

  625. have given,

  626. they've secured.

  627. And our response here

  628. is to conduct yourself

  629. with confidence.

  630. Walk in courage.

  631. Face trials

  632. with resurrection hope.

  633. Don't shrink back.

  634. Some of you,

  635. right now,

  636. are going through

  637. some difficulties.

  638. It's dark.

  639. You don't see

  640. how the end

  641. is going to happen.

  642. You don't see

  643. what the next step is.

  644. And I would just say,

  645. remember Jesus Christ.

  646. Remember him.

  647. It will be good.

  648. It will be right.

  649. Jesus is a good shepherd.

  650. Isn't he?

  651. He will lead you

  652. by his word.

  653. Remember him.

  654. Be confident.

  655. Not cocky,

  656. but be confident.

  657. Then thirdly,

  658. Paul says to Timothy,

  659. remember his promise.

  660. And as you do so,

  661. I want you to conduct yourself

  662. with endurance.

  663. See,

  664. he says this.

  665. This Jesus Christ,

  666. he's the offspring

  667. of David.

  668. Now,

  669. David lived about 700 plus years

  670. before Jesus.

  671. It's been a long time.

  672. Almost three times longer

  673. than our United States,

  674. 250 years.

  675. But this phrase,

  676. the offspring of David,

  677. it points to God's

  678. covenant faithfulness.

  679. God is faithful.

  680. He will keep his promises.

  681. It points to the promised Messiah.

  682. Jesus Christ is the son of David.

  683. David,

  684. he is God in the flesh,

  685. living the perfect life

  686. that Adam failed to live.

  687. Isn't that good?

  688. Pastor David,

  689. this morning,

  690. in his prayer,

  691. was praying about Jesus Christ,

  692. who lived the life

  693. that we couldn't.

  694. You know what he secured

  695. for us in doing that?

  696. His righteousness.

  697. When he died on the cross,

  698. he paid for our sins,

  699. yes.

  700. But he also gave us something.

  701. He gave us his righteousness

  702. so that in Christ,

  703. you and I

  704. are considered righteous.

  705. Amen?

  706. That's great.

  707. The offspring of David,

  708. this phrase also points

  709. to the unbreakable plan

  710. of salvation.

  711. God's plan is unfolding

  712. perfectly

  713. and timely.

  714. nothing is out of step.

  715. It shows the certainty

  716. of Christ's eternal reign.

  717. He will reign.

  718. I said it this morning

  719. this way too.

  720. I'm sorry.

  721. It's not he will reign.

  722. He reigns.

  723. He reigns.

  724. He is Lord now.

  725. Jesus is the fulfillment

  726. of every promise

  727. God ever made.

  728. This Memorial Day,

  729. we remember the promises

  730. of our nation.

  731. Things like liberty,

  732. justice,

  733. and the ongoing work

  734. required to preserve them.

  735. And what's to be the response?

  736. Conduct yourself

  737. with endurance.

  738. Keep going.

  739. Don't quit.

  740. Remember that God

  741. keeps his promises.

  742. So keep trusting him.

  743. Even when you don't see it now,

  744. keep trusting him.

  745. We finish by looking up

  746. this fourth point.

  747. The consequences

  748. and what remembering

  749. produces in our hearts.

  750. Paul shows Timothy

  751. what this looks like

  752. and he says there

  753. in verse 9,

  754. I am suffering

  755. bound with chains

  756. as a criminal.

  757. But the word of God

  758. is not bound.

  759. Paul says,

  760. there's courage.

  761. I want you to have courage

  762. in suffering,

  763. Timothy.

  764. Be courageous.

  765. Paul is chained

  766. but the gospel is not.

  767. Isn't that good news?

  768. There are people

  769. around us.

  770. People at work.

  771. People that live next door.

  772. People in our own families.

  773. And their hearts

  774. are just as stubborn

  775. and hard.

  776. And we believe,

  777. don't we?

  778. We are not ashamed

  779. of the gospel of Christ

  780. for it is the what?

  781. It is the power of God

  782. to salvation.

  783. God can save

  784. the most stubborn person.

  785. He saved you,

  786. didn't he?

  787. He saved me.

  788. I'm just blown away

  789. by that.

  790. We don't deserve it.

  791. Wow.

  792. Paul says,

  793. external chains

  794. cannot silence

  795. eternal truth.

  796. The word of God

  797. will not be bound,

  798. will not be chained.

  799. And Timothy's suffering

  800. does not signal

  801. divine abandonment.

  802. In fact,

  803. it's not in my notes.

  804. But sometimes

  805. the only way

  806. you're going to know

  807. Jesus Christ

  808. in the depths of suffering

  809. that he went through

  810. is to go through it yourself.

  811. And if you find yourself

  812. in the middle of heartache

  813. and suffering

  814. and pain right now,

  815. and it seems so hopeless

  816. and so hard,

  817. allow that

  818. just to bring your mind

  819. back to who Jesus Christ is,

  820. your loving Savior.

  821. Allow that to help you

  822. understand the depths

  823. that he went through

  824. even a little bit more clearly.

  825. Remember Jesus Christ

  826. this gives you courage

  827. when life is hard

  828. and when the way

  829. is insufferable.

  830. So not only are you

  831. to have courage

  832. in suffering,

  833. Timothy verse 10,

  834. you're to have purpose

  835. in your pain.

  836. Paul says,

  837. therefore,

  838. I endure everything

  839. for the sake of the elect.

  840. Pain becomes purposeful

  841. when tied to God's mission.

  842. There's a reason for it.

  843. If that reason

  844. is just to tell somebody else,

  845. it's not me.

  846. It's Christ in me.

  847. That's why I can have joy

  848. with this illness.

  849. That's why I can have joy

  850. when faced with this pain

  851. or this lack of job.

  852. that's why I can smile

  853. because there's a living,

  854. risen Savior

  855. and my hope is in him.

  856. There's purpose in pain,

  857. every hardship.

  858. It's an opportunity

  859. to show

  860. the grace of God,

  861. isn't it?

  862. That's what 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 12:9

  863. chapter 12,

  864. verse 9 says,

  865. my grace is sufficient

  866. for you.

  867. No matter how hard it is,

  868. God's grace is there

  869. and it is completely sufficient

  870. for the moment.

  871. There's purpose in pain.

  872. Sacrifice that blesses others

  873. was never wasted.

  874. It's never wasted.

  875. Paul says that his suffering

  876. has meaning.

  877. His mission

  878. is worth the cost.

  879. This Memorial Day,

  880. we honor those

  881. who endured hardship

  882. for the sake of others.

  883. Paul says,

  884. I endure for the gospel.

  885. Jesus Christ,

  886. I endure to the end

  887. for my sheep.

  888. Are you willing to endure?

  889. Let me just finish up

  890. with this.

  891. Tomorrow's Memorial Day.

  892. Hopefully,

  893. we're going to take a moment

  894. to remember the sacrifice,

  895. the freedom,

  896. and the responsibilities

  897. we have.

  898. But here in this passage

  899. in 2 Timothy chapter 2,

    2 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  900. Paul also says this.

  901. He calls us to remember.

  902. Remember Jesus Christ.

  903. Remember his person.

  904. And Timothy,

  905. respond with loyalty.

  906. Be loyal to him.

  907. Remember his power

  908. and respond with confidence.

  909. Remember his promise

  910. and respond with endurance.

  911. Church,

  912. I would say,

  913. let's remember Jesus Christ.

  914. Let's trust

  915. and obey him.

  916. Let's pray.

  917. God,

  918. it is true.

  919. You are totally sovereign.

  920. You are the creator

  921. and Lord

  922. of the universe.

  923. You've given us

  924. your son,

  925. Jesus Christ.

  926. He lived the perfect life.

  927. He died that death.

  928. He was betrayed

  929. and died that horrible death

  930. for us.

  931. We are so grateful.

  932. Grateful for his willingness

  933. to obey you,

  934. his commander.

  935. Grateful for the courage

  936. to follow your plan.

  937. Father,

  938. we look to Jesus.

  939. in doing so,

  940. we recognize

  941. our own failures.

  942. And as it says

  943. at the end of 2 Timothy,

  944. we just turn these things

  945. to you.

  946. We give them to you.

  947. We want to be fit

  948. and clean vessels

  949. for you.

  950. Lord,

  951. maybe there's somebody

  952. here now struggling.

  953. They know these things

  954. to be true,

  955. but it's still

  956. hard to believe.

  957. I pray that you would

  958. strengthen them

  959. as you did,

  960. Timothy.

  961. May the word of God,

  962. may Christ himself

  963. be their sure foundation.

  964. May they go away

  965. changed.

  966. Lord,

  967. help us to,

  968. in our recalling

  969. of who Jesus is,

  970. to respond

  971. in ways

  972. that please you.

  973. We thank you

  974. for this church.

  975. Lord,

  976. help us to continue

  977. to be a light

  978. for the gospel

  979. in our communities.

  980. We ask this

  981. in Jesus' name.

  982. Amen.
