  1. Well, I wonder if you can say that this morning.

  2. My boast is Jesus Christ.

  3. I trust you can.

  4. Well, what does it take to be able to make that confession?

  5. A Christ of your own making, but the Christ, the true Christ that's in the Scripture.

  6. We've been learning about Him a little bit, and we'll see Him again this morning.

  7. The true glimpse of the true Savior, it takes recognition of who He is.

  8. But then it also takes an honest look in your own heart, an examination.

  9. How does this true Christ address me?

  10. How does this true Christ address the issues of my life?

  11. How does the truth about Jesus confront the situation that I'm in?

  12. And it calls us out of the ignorance that we have had,

  13. and calls us to something that is clear, something that is defined.

  14. And by God's grace, it will call us to worship.

  15. It will call us to faith in Him.

  16. But God has to do a work in our hearts to draw out the truth for us,

  17. and to expose the ignorance of our hearts to lead us to that revelation,

  18. so that we can, in fact, say, my boast is Jesus Christ.

  19. Well, on March of 1974, a Japanese soldier named Hiro Onoda

  20. walked out of the jungle on Lubang Island in the Philippines.

  21. World War II had ended in 1945.

  22. This was almost 29 years later, he finally walks out of the jungle.

  23. For Onoda, the war had not ever ended.

  24. He had been sent to the island late in the time of the World War II.

  25. He was told, given instructions from his intelligence officer,

  26. not to surrender under any condition.

  27. So when the war ended and leaflets were dropped,

  28. messages about the war being over,

  29. members were sent and search parties would come,

  30. and families were sent to search for their loved ones.

  31. But Onoda did not believe the pamphlets that were dropped.

  32. He thought the messages were enemy tricks.

  33. He thought that they were the deception.

  34. He thought they were meant to convey a surrender that he should not follow.

  35. So he stayed in the jungle.

  36. He kept hiding.

  37. He kept fighting.

  38. He kept living as though the war was still raging.

  39. And for 29 years after the war was over,

  40. he lived in that pseudo-reality,

  41. a reality that he had made for himself.

  42. Japanese traveler ran into him and discovered that he was living under these conditions.

  43. And he called him to understand the truth of the war being over.

  44. But Onoda would not surrender.

  45. He said he would remain true to the orders he was given.

  46. Finally, after 29 years,

  47. the Japanese government would send his former commanding officer,

  48. who was now a fisherman,

  49. to meet with Onoda face-to-face and to dismiss those orders.

  50. Only then Onoda laid down his weapons.

  51. Only then Onoda would come out of hiding.

  52. And only then would Onoda understand the reality of the situation that was in front of him.

  53. The story is true of ignorance.

  54. The ignorance that rested on Onoda's heart

  55. is the same kind of ignorance that all of us are called to confront.

  56. You see, Onoda didn't accept the announcement.

  57. And because of living in ignorance,

  58. he continued to believe and exist as though the war continued.

  59. This morning in our passage, as we look at Acts chapter 3,

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  60. and I would encourage you to turn there in your Bibles, if you would,

  61. Acts chapter 3.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  62. If you're using the Pew Bible, it's on page 911.

  63. The truth is that the audience that Peter was speaking to

  64. were also blinded by ignorance.

  65. They were unable to recognize Jesus Christ,

  66. God in the flesh, who was right in front of them.

  67. Jesus had ministered before them for three years in public,

  68. and they would not receive his message.

  69. We find at the beginning parts of Acts chapter 3,

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  70. Peter and John who are making their way to the temple.

  71. This is the hour of prayer.

  72. This is the ninth hour, which would have been three o'clock in the afternoon.

  73. They're going there as was their custom.

  74. And you remember, they encountered this lame man.

  75. This man who had been lame from birth,

  76. we find for 40 years.

  77. He had been lame.

  78. And in order to make ends meet,

  79. he would ask those religious individuals who were coming to the temple for financial assistance.

  80. He would beg for help.

  81. On this day, he would pass Peter and John.

  82. He would ask for financial help.

  83. And Peter would say,

  84. I don't have silver and gold,

  85. but what I have,

  86. I give to you in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

  87. Rise up and walk.

  88. He takes the man by the hand.

  89. You remember, he raises him up.

  90. The man walks and leaps,

  91. and he's praising God

  92. as they walk together into the temple.

  93. Those in the temple are amazed.

  94. We saw that a couple of weeks ago.

  95. We saw the amazement of the crowd.

  96. They recognized this man,

  97. and they know that something significant had taken place.

  98. We find that this man had been healed.

  99. And in verse 9 and 10,

  100. we find the people saw him walking and praising God.

  101. They recognized him as the one who sat at the beautiful gate of the temple,

  102. asking for alms,

  103. and they were filled with wonder and amazement

  104. at what was happening to him.

  105. They recognized that a miracle had taken place.

  106. And they were filled with wonder and amazement.

  107. And a couple of weeks ago,

  108. when we talked about this,

  109. we recognized the significance of wonder,

  110. this marveling at what was taking place.

  111. But Peter wants to make sure

  112. that the hearts of those who are in front of him

  113. move from wonder to worship.

  114. And that's where all of us need to be.

  115. We need to move from just being amazed

  116. at the spectacular works of God.

  117. It needs to move us in,

  118. into devotion,

  119. into understanding of who God is,

  120. and ultimately into faith.

  121. Faith in Christ.

  122. Faith in the message of this gospel.

  123. And Peter will take this opportunity now,

  124. as those people have rushed together,

  125. to move their hearts from wonder into worship.

  126. That's his goal.

  127. In this second part of this sermon,

  128. that begins in verse 17.

  129. He wants them to recognize that,

  130. that wondering is good,

  131. but it's never meant to stay there.

  132. He says there in verse 12,

  133. why do you wonder at this?

  134. And throughout this discourse,

  135. Peter will direct the attention away from himself,

  136. and he'll direct attention of wonder to Jesus Christ.

  137. He wants them to understand the object of wonder,

  138. and the object of worship.

  139. Don't stare at us as if we did anything.

  140. Look to Christ.

  141. He's the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham.

  142. He's the one you crucified.

  143. He's the holy one.

  144. He's the righteous one.

  145. He's the one you murdered.

  146. He's the author of life,

  147. who you denied.

  148. Look to Christ.

  149. And we find in verse 16 of chapter 3,

  150. it says this,

  151. And in his name,

  152. or excuse me,

  153. and his name,

  154. by faith in his name,

  155. he has made him strong.

  156. And the faith that is through Jesus

  157. has given this man the perfect health

  158. in the presence of you all.

  159. It's meant to lead you to faith.

  160. It's meant to lead you to worship.

  161. And at this point of the message,

  162. Peter's sermon becomes very hard-hitting.

  163. It does indict.

  164. It does accuse.

  165. It does condemn.

  166. Peter wants his audience

  167. to recognize the bad news

  168. before he can welcome them

  169. to enjoy the good news.

  170. The good news of the promises of God.

  171. And he does this in the sharpest way possible.

  172. We find that in verse 13.

  173. He wants his audience to recognize

  174. the seriousness of their crime.

  175. The God of your father Abraham

  176. glorified his servant, Jesus,

  177. whom you delivered over to Pilate.

  178. That's how bad it is.

  179. God sent his servant

  180. in the form of Jesus Christ

  181. so that you could see him and know him.

  182. But what did you do?

  183. You didn't receive him.

  184. You put him to death.

  185. And Peter makes this connection

  186. not to condemn them,

  187. but as we're going to see

  188. from verses 17 to 26,

  189. Peter makes this connection

  190. to invite them to something special,

  191. to invite them to faith.

  192. Because as we're going to see,

  193. God's promises still stand.

  194. His promises still stand.

  195. So turn with me, if you would,

  196. to verse 17.

  197. I'm going to read the first several verses of this

  198. and then we'll jump into our passage.

  199. It says this,

  200. And now, brothers,

  201. I know that you acted in ignorance,

  202. as did also your rulers.

  203. But what God foretold

  204. by the mouth of all the prophets

  205. that his Christ would suffer,

  206. he thus fulfilled.

  207. Repent, therefore,

  208. and turn back

  209. that your sins may be blotted out,

  210. that times of refreshing may come

  211. from the presence of the Lord,

  212. and that he may send Christ

  213. appointed for you,

  214. Jesus,

  215. whom heaven must receive

  216. until the time

  217. for restoring all things

  218. about which God spoke

  219. by the mouth

  220. of his holy prophets

  221. long ago.

  222. You see this invitation now.

  223. You see this tone

  224. that's beginning to shift.

  225. This indictment,

  226. this condemnation,

  227. this rebuke

  228. that Peter will bring

  229. at the first part of his sermon

  230. now turns to promise.

  231. And he begins by saying,

  232. receive the message

  233. of God's promise.

  234. That's the invitation.

  235. Receive this message

  236. of God's promise.

  237. And in order to receive

  238. this message,

  239. you need to come to terms

  240. with your own ignorance.

  241. The danger of ignorance.

  242. You need to recognize

  243. that your ignorant hearts

  244. have polluted the truth,

  245. have darkened your heart,

  246. and have caused this response

  247. to Jesus himself.

  248. And Peter begins this message

  249. back in verse 12.

  250. He begins with this tone.

  251. Men of Israel.

  252. He's addressing them.

  253. And now recognize the shift

  254. that's beginning to happen

  255. in verse 17.

  256. You see how he addresses them here?

  257. He says,

  258. and now brothers.

  259. And now brothers.

  260. Do you notice the tone?

  261. The tone that has shifted?

  262. Now this tone of invitation.

  263. Now this tone

  264. that we belong together.

  265. By using this word brothers,

  266. Peter is placing himself

  267. alongside them.

  268. And I wonder,

  269. even as Peter was speaking

  270. the words,

  271. you denied the servant,

  272. God's son.

  273. I wonder,

  274. even in the use

  275. of the word denied,

  276. Peter recognizes

  277. in his own heart,

  278. you know what?

  279. I deny the Lord three times.

  280. But it didn't disqualify me

  281. from being able

  282. to enjoy the benefits

  283. of the promise.

  284. It didn't keep me away.

  285. And so now Peter

  286. extends this invitation

  287. to these brothers,

  288. these men,

  289. who are there

  290. in front of him.

  291. He's drawing attention

  292. to their shared heritage,

  293. their shared relationship.

  294. He's also drawing attention

  295. to their shared responsibility.

  296. The first part

  297. of this message

  298. draws this attention

  299. to the seriousness

  300. of their rejection.

  301. But Peter is now

  302. going to invite them

  303. to the solution

  304. that they all share

  305. in Christ.

  306. This welcome invitation

  307. to enjoy the benefits

  308. of what Christ

  309. has accomplished.

  310. You acted in ignorance.

  311. This is the Greek word

  312. anoya,

  313. which is a compound word.

  314. The first part of it,

  315. ah,

  316. which is not.

  317. The second part of it

  318. is knowledge.

  319. So not knowledge.

  320. You acted without knowledge.

  321. You acted in a way

  322. that demonstrated

  323. you didn't understand

  324. what was taking place.

  325. And all throughout

  326. the scripture,

  327. whenever this word is used,

  328. it's always used

  329. to implicate the heathen.

  330. It's always used

  331. of those who are outside,

  332. who decide not

  333. to believe in God.

  334. This is not,

  335. by the way,

  336. the absence of information.

  337. Those who were standing

  338. there in Jerusalem

  339. had all the access

  340. of information.

  341. Jesus himself

  342. had ministered to them

  343. for three years.

  344. And not just the lack

  345. of information,

  346. but there was also

  347. this access

  348. to information.

  349. So that's not

  350. what we're talking about.

  351. But it does talk about

  352. the utter blindness

  353. of these individuals

  354. in their response

  355. to the truth

  356. that was right

  357. in front of them.

  358. It's similar

  359. to what the apostle Paul

  360. says in Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:17–19

  361. chapter 4,

  362. verses 17 to 19,

  363. describing the condition

  364. of our hearts

  365. before Christ.

  366. He says,

  367. Now I say

  368. and testify in the Lord

  369. that you must no longer

  370. walk as the Gentiles walk,

  371. in the futility

  372. of their minds.

  373. They're darkened

  374. in their understanding.

  375. They're separated

  376. from the life of God

  377. because of the ignorance

  378. that is in them

  379. due to the hardening

  380. of their hearts.

  381. They have become callous.

  382. They have given themselves

  383. up to sensuality,

  384. greedy to practice

  385. every kind of impurity.

  386. What is this ignorance produced?

  387. Well, it's produced

  388. futility in their minds,

  389. darkening of understanding,

  390. alienated from God,

  391. hardness of heart,

  392. calloused in the way

  393. they respond,

  394. giving themselves over

  395. to all kinds of wickedness.

  396. In relationship

  397. to the spoken word,

  398. there is a total

  399. rejection of truth,

  400. a posture that has

  401. set itself aside

  402. from hearing and knowing

  403. and embracing

  404. the truth

  405. that they had access to.

  406. This is a perfect description

  407. of the ignorance

  408. that Peter is describing here.

  409. It's an ignorance,

  410. by the way,

  411. that was shared.

  412. Notice,

  413. ignorance that is present

  414. in you

  415. but also present

  416. in your rulers.

  417. You see that in verse 17.

  418. You acted in ignorance

  419. as did also your rulers.

  420. And that's important.

  421. You can't point the finger

  422. at the Roman authorities.

  423. You can't point the finger

  424. at those heathen people

  425. over there.

  426. No, there's shared culpability,

  427. shared responsibility,

  428. shared ignorance

  429. that's taking place

  430. that has rejected,

  431. wholesale,

  432. the wonder

  433. of the gospel of God.

  434. But now there's hope.

  435. And that's where we turn next.

  436. The hope of understanding

  437. that we see in verse 18.

  438. Notice this.

  439. It says,

  440. One of the most glorious words

  441. in the New Testament

  442. is one of the smallest.

  443. This word, but.

  444. But God.

  445. This contrastive word.

  446. The things which we deserve

  447. would lead us away from God,

  448. but God in his mercy.

  449. He welcomes us

  450. to something better.

  451. He welcomes us

  452. by his grace

  453. to experience

  454. the joy

  455. of what we're going to read

  456. in the remaining parts

  457. of this passage.

  458. But God.

  459. God changes the story.

  460. God offers hope

  461. when we deserve punishment.

  462. God fulfills promises

  463. in spite of human failure.

  464. God offers life

  465. even though we put

  466. his son to death.

  467. The author of life

  468. was killed,

  469. was murdered,

  470. and yet God continues

  471. to extend mercy,

  472. his grace.

  473. And even in this moment,

  474. Peter is trying

  475. to awaken

  476. in their minds

  477. an understanding

  478. of this hope.

  479. He calls these brothers

  480. out of ignorance,

  481. not to leave them

  482. with crushing judgment,

  483. but to welcome them

  484. to the hope

  485. that can be found in Christ.

  486. This message

  487. of what Christ accomplished.

  488. Notice,

  489. God foretold this

  490. by the mouth

  491. of his prophets,

  492. which means

  493. God knew

  494. this was going

  495. to happen.

  496. And we recognize

  497. as we look

  498. through the scriptures

  499. and even in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  500. what does Peter say?

  501. Well,

  502. this happened

  503. according to the definite

  504. plan and purpose

  505. of God.

  506. God is not surprised

  507. by your rebellion.

  508. And we know

  509. that things happen

  510. by God's design.

  511. We find that

  512. as we work our way

  513. back to Isaiah chapter 46,

    Isaiah 46 chapter mention

  514. what we see

  515. in Isaiah chapter 46,

    Isaiah 46 chapter mention

  516. the character

  517. of God on display,

  518. set against

  519. the character

  520. of idols.

  521. To whom will you liken me

  522. and make me equal?

  523. To those who hire

  524. a goldsmith

  525. and make it

  526. into a god

  527. and then fall down

  528. and worship?

  529. They lift it up

  530. to their shoulder.

  531. They carry it.

  532. They set it in place.

  533. It stands there.

  534. It cannot move

  535. from its place.

  536. And here,

  537. the prophet Isaiah

  538. is describing

  539. the character

  540. of false gods.

  541. You have to do

  542. everything for this god.

  543. You make this god.

  544. You set up this god.

  545. You move this god.

  546. You set it in place.

  547. It cannot do anything

  548. for you.

  549. It offers no hope.

  550. But here's the character

  551. of our god.

  552. Remember this

  553. and stand firm.

  554. I am god

  555. and there is no other.

  556. I am god

  557. and there is none

  558. like me

  559. declaring the end

  560. from the beginning

  561. and from ancient times

  562. things yet not done

  563. saying,

  564. my counsel shall stand

  565. and I will accomplish

  566. all my purposes.

  567. I have spoken

  568. and I will bring it

  569. to pass.

  570. I have purposed

  571. and I will do it.

  572. God knows the end

  573. from the beginning

  574. and God knows

  575. what was going to happen

  576. from eternity past.

  577. He spoke it into existence.

  578. He doesn't just promise

  579. that it will take place.

  580. He makes it happen.

  581. I will accomplish

  582. my purposes.

  583. You see,

  584. what makes this beautiful

  585. is that God's character

  586. rests not on his ability

  587. to make promises.

  588. God's character

  589. rests on his ability

  590. to keep promises.

  591. We have a promise

  592. making

  593. and a promise

  594. keeping God.

  595. And that's what Peter

  596. wants his audience

  597. to understand.

  598. You,

  599. in ignorance,

  600. put your God

  601. to death.

  602. But that has not

  603. disqualified you

  604. from now being

  605. the recipients

  606. of those who are

  607. invited to enjoy

  608. the benefits

  609. of this work

  610. of Christ

  611. in dying

  612. for sinners.

  613. You see,

  614. anyone can make promises

  615. but those promises

  616. are empty

  617. if they don't happen.

  618. Only God

  619. can make promises

  620. and keep them.

  621. And we find

  622. from Isaiah chapter 53

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  623. what were some

  624. of these promises?

  625. Well,

  626. it was the will of God

  627. to crush his son.

  628. Why?

  629. Well,

  630. because in verse 5

  631. of Isaiah 53,

  632. upon him

  633. was the chastisement

  634. that brought us peace

  635. and with his wounds

  636. we are healed.

  637. With his wounds

  638. we are healed.

  639. And that's what Peter

  640. is addressing

  641. in verse 18.

  642. God foretold

  643. by the mouth

  644. of all the prophets

  645. that his Christ

  646. would suffer

  647. he thus fulfilled.

  648. This is captured

  649. by the prophets

  650. ages ago

  651. and this has now

  652. been fulfilled

  653. in God's servant

  654. his son,

  655. Jesus.

  656. Not that

  657. by his stripes

  658. you are punished.

  659. Not by his stripes

  660. you are condemned.

  661. Not by his stripes

  662. you are judged.

  663. But by his stripes

  664. you might be healed.

  665. Healed.

  666. And especially healed

  667. in a way

  668. that runs

  669. to the deepest

  670. parts of you.

  671. Your need

  672. for salvation.

  673. Your need

  674. for forgiveness.

  675. Your need

  676. for cleansing

  677. that Jesus offers

  678. through his

  679. crushed

  680. broken body.

  681. Through his stripes.

  682. You can be healed

  683. in the deepest

  684. way possible.

  685. So this is

  686. this contrastive

  687. word

  688. but

  689. it helps

  690. to know

  691. that we're being

  692. led somewhere.

  693. So receive

  694. the message

  695. of God's promise

  696. and then

  697. respond

  698. next

  699. here

  700. to the call

  701. for repentance.

  702. The call

  703. of repentance.

  704. We find that

  705. in verses 19

  706. to 21.

  707. It says

  708. repent therefore

  709. and turn back

  710. that your sins

  711. may be blotted out

  712. that times

  713. of refreshing

  714. may come

  715. from the presence

  716. of the Lord

  717. and that he may

  718. send the Christ

  719. appointed for you

  720. Jesus

  721. whom heaven

  722. must receive

  723. until a time

  724. for restoring

  725. all things

  726. about which God

  727. spoke by the mouth

  728. of his holy prophets

  729. long ago.

  730. You need repentance.

  731. This is really

  732. the word

  733. for the need

  734. of a change

  735. of mind.

  736. That's kind of

  737. the definition

  738. of repentance.

  739. That's what they needed.

  740. They need to respond

  741. in repentance

  742. by changing

  743. their mind.

  744. Changing their mind

  745. because of what

  746. they know

  747. about

  748. about Jesus

  749. himself.

  750. This word

  751. repent

  752. is a compound

  753. word as well

  754. and it

  755. talks about

  756. the mind

  757. itself.

  758. And so

  759. while there

  760. was ignorance

  761. in their heart

  762. where they

  763. were without

  764. knowledge

  765. now they

  766. need to

  767. engage

  768. their mind

  769. in repentance

  770. and turn

  771. and change

  772. and redirect

  773. their life

  774. to Jesus.

  775. This change

  776. of mind

  777. is a change

  778. of thinking

  779. a change

  780. of truth

  781. change

  782. of posture

  783. a change

  784. of direction

  785. in life.

  786. It's something

  787. that must happen

  788. as we become

  789. aware

  790. of the truth

  791. of God's

  792. word.

  793. Repent

  794. and change

  795. your life

  796. turn back

  797. he says.

  798. Another Greek

  799. word that

  800. gives us

  801. the direction

  802. of this change

  803. there is a turn

  804. of mind

  805. but a redirection

  806. of life

  807. a turning back.

  808. I love

  809. the statement

  810. that's given

  811. here.

  812. Your father's

  813. Abraham understood

  814. the nature

  815. of this faith.

  816. Abraham believed

  817. God and it

  818. was accounted

  819. to him

  820. as righteousness.

  821. It's not

  822. that Abraham's

  823. faith

  824. was produced

  825. righteousness

  826. but it's that

  827. Abraham's faith

  828. was accredited

  829. as righteous.

  830. Not because

  831. Abraham brought

  832. righteousness

  833. to the table

  834. but because

  835. through Abraham's

  836. faith

  837. the object

  838. of faith

  839. Jesus

  840. was righteous.

  841. So we see

  842. in verse 14

  843. of our passage

  844. it says

  845. you denied

  846. who?

  847. The holy

  848. and righteous

  849. one.

  850. Jesus is

  851. righteous

  852. and it's a

  853. righteousness

  854. that belongs

  855. to him

  856. and it's a

  857. righteousness

  858. that then

  859. is accredited

  860. to the account

  861. of those

  862. who believe

  863. in Jesus

  864. as the

  865. way

  866. to faith

  867. through repentance.

  868. You see

  869. true repentance

  870. is not just

  871. simply being

  872. sorry

  873. for bad

  874. things.

  875. True repentance

  876. is not just

  877. grieving over

  878. consequences

  879. or feeling

  880. embarrassed

  881. or feeling

  882. a sense

  883. of shame.

  884. It's not

  885. something that

  886. just happens

  887. one day

  888. and fades

  889. the next.

  890. True repentance

  891. involves faith.

  892. It involves

  893. a belief

  894. in truth.

  895. Repentance

  896. is a

  897. faith issue

  898. and that

  899. means that

  900. repentance

  901. is a

  902. worship issue

  903. and with this

  904. we come full

  905. circle right?

  906. We come back

  907. to where we

  908. started.

  909. Coming back

  910. to verse 16

  911. and understand

  912. the significance

  913. of what Peter

  914. is saying here

  915. in calling

  916. his audience

  917. to faith.

  918. It's true

  919. faith in Christ

  920. that this man

  921. is healed

  922. and this

  923. invitation

  924. of faith

  925. is for you

  926. too.

  927. You must

  928. also believe.

  929. Come to terms

  930. with the seriousness

  931. of your sin,

  932. your rebellion

  933. against God

  934. and this

  935. begins

  936. to change

  937. your mind,

  938. your thinking

  939. about who he is

  940. and what you need.

  941. in verse 19.

  942. What is the result?

  943. Well, the result

  944. of this

  945. is that your sins

  946. will be blotted

  947. out.

  948. Blotted,

  949. which is a

  950. word to wipe

  951. away or to

  952. eliminate.

  953. See, it's a

  954. picture of a

  955. record that

  956. was recorded

  957. in some

  958. piece of

  959. paper.

  960. And in the

  961. ancient world,

  962. the ink that

  963. was used

  964. wouldn't bite

  965. into the surface

  966. of the papyrus

  967. and so it

  968. could often

  969. very easily

  970. be wiped

  971. away.

  972. So to be

  973. blotted out

  974. carries this

  975. image of

  976. this written

  977. record where

  978. that ledger

  979. is totally

  980. removed.

  981. The sin

  982. that was

  983. there,

  984. the indictment

  985. against you

  986. is removed

  987. in totality.

  988. Not just

  989. crossed away,

  990. not just

  991. overlooked,

  992. but it's

  993. replaced.

  994. There's an

  995. exchange that

  996. takes place

  997. there.

  998. That record

  999. no longer

  1000. exists.

  1001. It's because

  1002. there's a

  1003. replacement

  1004. that's

  1005. taken place.

  1006. The

  1007. righteousness

  1008. of Christ

  1009. is now

  1010. accredited

  1011. to your

  1012. account.

  1013. So have

  1014. a change

  1015. of mind.

  1016. In verse

  1017. 20,

  1018. now Peter

  1019. wants to

  1020. invite this

  1021. audience not

  1022. just to a

  1023. change of

  1024. mind,

  1025. but what are

  1026. the results

  1027. of that

  1028. change?

  1029. Well,

  1030. there is an

  1031. offer now

  1032. of times

  1033. of refreshing.

  1034. Notice

  1035. verse 20,

  1036. it says,

  1037. that times

  1038. of refreshing

  1039. may come

  1040. from the

  1041. presence of

  1042. the Lord

  1043. and that

  1044. he may

  1045. send the

  1046. Christ

  1047. appointed

  1048. for you

  1049. Jesus.

  1050. God offers

  1051. to replace

  1052. that ledger

  1053. of condemnation

  1054. with a record

  1055. of refreshing.

  1056. It's refreshing,

  1057. which is a

  1058. word for

  1059. relief.

  1060. It provides

  1061. this picture

  1062. of this

  1063. cool breeze

  1064. or this

  1065. very refreshing

  1066. water that

  1067. is given

  1068. to those

  1069. weary souls.

  1070. This time

  1071. of refreshing

  1072. that we can

  1073. enjoy because

  1074. of Jesus

  1075. Christ.

  1076. This is the

  1077. only place

  1078. it's found

  1079. in the

  1080. New Testament

  1081. and it's

  1082. not the

  1083. kind of

  1084. result we

  1085. would expect.

  1086. See,

  1087. our minds

  1088. are likely

  1089. to follow

  1090. when we

  1091. think about

  1092. being blotted

  1093. out or

  1094. purged away.

  1095. Our minds

  1096. often go to

  1097. Psalm 51

  1098. and that's a

  1099. good picture

  1100. as well.

  1101. In Psalm 51,

  1102. the psalmist

  1103. is saying,

  1104. verses 1 and 2,

  1105. have mercy

  1106. on me,

  1107. O God,

  1108. according to

  1109. your steadfast

  1110. love.

  1111. According to

  1112. your abundant

  1113. mercy,

  1114. blot out

  1115. my transgression.

  1116. Wash me

  1117. thoroughly

  1118. from my

  1119. iniquity

  1120. and cleanse

  1121. me from

  1122. my sin.

  1123. Purge me

  1124. with hyssop

  1125. and I will

  1126. be clean.

  1127. Wash me

  1128. and I will

  1129. be whiter

  1130. than snow.

  1131. Hide your

  1132. face from

  1133. my sin

  1134. and blot

  1135. out all

  1136. my iniquities.

  1137. Create in

  1138. me a clean

  1139. heart,

  1140. O God.

  1141. Renew

  1142. a right

  1143. spirit,

  1144. within me.

  1145. It's the

  1146. same language

  1147. that Peter

  1148. is using.

  1149. Wash

  1150. and blot

  1151. and cleanse

  1152. and purge.

  1153. That's a picture

  1154. of forgiveness,

  1155. right?

  1156. But it's

  1157. the picture

  1158. of refreshing

  1159. is meant to

  1160. go much

  1161. deeper.

  1162. That's still

  1163. contained within

  1164. what Peter

  1165. is describing.

  1166. There is

  1167. washing,

  1168. there is

  1169. cleansing,

  1170. but Peter

  1171. wants his

  1172. audience to

  1173. know there

  1174. is so much

  1175. more.

  1176. more.

  1177. There's

  1178. not just

  1179. this temporary

  1180. ledger that

  1181. has been

  1182. fixed.

  1183. There is

  1184. now this

  1185. ongoing,

  1186. these times

  1187. of refreshing

  1188. that we get

  1189. to enjoy.

  1190. And he

  1191. uses this

  1192. word,

  1193. this Greek

  1194. word,

  1195. well,

  1196. kairos,

  1197. that's what

  1198. it is.

  1199. It's the

  1200. word kairos,

  1201. which is the

  1202. word for

  1203. seasons,

  1204. not the

  1205. word chronos,

  1206. which talks

  1207. about a very

  1208. distinct

  1209. time,

  1210. a time

  1211. signature.

  1212. Peter wants

  1213. him to

  1214. know,

  1215. these are

  1216. refreshing

  1217. times that

  1218. you can

  1219. enjoy for

  1220. the long

  1221. haul,

  1222. because of

  1223. what Christ

  1224. has accomplished.

  1225. It's refreshing

  1226. that he offers,

  1227. this forgiveness

  1228. of sin,

  1229. it's a different

  1230. kind than

  1231. Israel was

  1232. familiar with

  1233. because of

  1234. the once

  1235. for all

  1236. sacrifice

  1237. of Christ,

  1238. this permanent

  1239. refreshing,

  1240. this permanent

  1241. forgiveness,

  1242. this permanent

  1243. cleansing that

  1244. Jesus offers

  1245. now to

  1246. those who

  1247. are in

  1248. Christ through

  1249. faith.

  1250. And this

  1251. is the

  1252. kind of

  1253. refreshing

  1254. that God

  1255. offers and

  1256. extends through

  1257. his son.

  1258. It's the

  1259. refreshing that

  1260. Peter refers

  1261. to in

  1262. Acts 2

  1263. 23,

  1264. he says,

  1265. this Jesus,

  1266. he was

  1267. delivered up

  1268. according to

  1269. the definite

  1270. plan and

  1271. foreknowledge of

  1272. God,

  1273. you crucified

  1274. and killed

  1275. at the hands

  1276. of lawless

  1277. men,

  1278. but he was

  1279. appointed for

  1280. you.

  1281. He was

  1282. appointed for

  1283. you.

  1284. The personal

  1285. nature of

  1286. what Christ

  1287. accomplished,

  1288. offered to

  1289. those who

  1290. were in

  1291. front of

  1292. the apostle

  1293. Peter,

  1294. those who

  1295. desperately

  1296. longed for

  1297. refreshing,

  1298. and Peter

  1299. wants them to

  1300. understand that

  1301. the real

  1302. refreshing that

  1303. you need is

  1304. found in

  1305. Jesus,

  1306. who was

  1307. appointed for

  1308. you.

  1309. Whether you

  1310. experience that

  1311. through repentance

  1312. and faith in

  1313. him.

  1314. And then this

  1315. promise that we

  1316. see of

  1317. restoration in

  1318. verse 21,

  1319. notice,

  1320. whom heaven

  1321. must receive

  1322. until the

  1323. time for

  1324. restoring all

  1325. things about

  1326. which God

  1327. spoke by the

  1328. mouth of his

  1329. holy prophets

  1330. long ago.

  1331. Did you catch

  1332. that?

  1333. This embedded

  1334. promise in

  1335. this statement?

  1336. Yes, Jesus is

  1337. in heaven right

  1338. now, okay?

  1339. But that is

  1340. not his

  1341. permanent

  1342. situation.

  1343. He is there,

  1344. but he is

  1345. there,

  1346. bounded by

  1347. this word

  1348. until,

  1349. until the

  1350. time for

  1351. restoring.

  1352. This word

  1353. that is used

  1354. here wants

  1355. to help us

  1356. understand there

  1357. is a terminal

  1358. boundary that is

  1359. in place.

  1360. He is there,

  1361. it is just the

  1362. waiting room for

  1363. the final

  1364. restoration he

  1365. intends to

  1366. give.

  1367. The restoration

  1368. hasn't happened

  1369. yet.

  1370. He is there

  1371. waiting in

  1372. the future

  1373. for us to

  1374. then enjoy

  1375. this full

  1376. restoration

  1377. that he's

  1378. promised.

  1379. Him being

  1380. in heaven

  1381. is not

  1382. the fulfillment.

  1383. It's the

  1384. waiting room.

  1385. The until

  1386. implies

  1387. incompleteness.

  1388. It implies

  1389. that something

  1390. remains outstanding.

  1391. That something

  1392. about restoration

  1393. has not yet

  1394. happened.

  1395. There will

  1396. be a time

  1397. of restoration.

  1398. It's yet

  1399. future.

  1400. It's not

  1401. in the past.

  1402. And the context

  1403. is significant

  1404. because for

  1405. this Greek

  1406. word restoration

  1407. that is only

  1408. used here

  1409. in this

  1410. verse,

  1411. it's shared

  1412. in a word

  1413. family for

  1414. restoration.

  1415. And the only

  1416. other time

  1417. it's used

  1418. in Acts,

  1419. we find in

  1420. Acts chapter

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1421. 1-6.

  1422. Notice.

  1423. So when

  1424. they had come

  1425. together,

  1426. they asked

  1427. him,

  1428. this is the

  1429. disciples,

  1430. Lord,

  1431. will you at

  1432. this time

  1433. restore the

  1434. kingdom to

  1435. Israel?

  1436. They were

  1437. looking for

  1438. restoration.

  1439. They were

  1440. looking for

  1441. the Messiah.

  1442. They were

  1443. looking for

  1444. a king.

  1445. They were

  1446. looking for

  1447. Jesus to

  1448. establish his

  1449. throne in

  1450. Jerusalem.

  1451. That's what

  1452. they were

  1453. waiting for.

  1454. And you

  1455. remember that

  1456. Jesus for

  1457. 40 days

  1458. before his

  1459. ascension is

  1460. talking about

  1461. the kingdom

  1462. and so the

  1463. apostles want

  1464. to know,

  1465. okay, so

  1466. when is it

  1467. going to

  1468. come?

  1469. Remember,

  1470. Jesus' answer

  1471. was,

  1472. it's not

  1473. for you to

  1474. know the

  1475. times or the

  1476. seasons.

  1477. And now

  1478. here we

  1479. are in

  1480. Acts 3

  1481. and Peter

  1482. is not

  1483. telling his

  1484. audience,

  1485. well,

  1486. there's no

  1487. more

  1488. restoration

  1489. that has

  1490. passed because

  1491. of your

  1492. rejection of

  1493. the Messiah.

  1494. Rather,

  1495. he says,

  1496. no,

  1497. there's a

  1498. restoration

  1499. coming and

  1500. we're waiting

  1501. for it.

  1502. It's coming.

  1503. It is in the

  1504. waiting room.

  1505. It's confirmation

  1506. that there will

  1507. be restoration

  1508. that will take

  1509. place.

  1510. And that's

  1511. what Israel

  1512. longed for.

  1513. You see,

  1514. Israel's problem

  1515. was not that

  1516. they expected

  1517. a kingdom.

  1518. Israel's problem

  1519. was they had

  1520. the wrong

  1521. timing.

  1522. And they

  1523. couldn't see

  1524. that the

  1525. suffering of

  1526. Christ had

  1527. to come before

  1528. the glory.

  1529. And that's

  1530. what we find

  1531. in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1:10

  1532. chapter 1

  1533. verses 10

  1534. and 11.

  1535. The prophets,

  1536. it says,

  1537. concerning this

  1538. salvation,

  1539. the prophets

  1540. who prophesied

  1541. about the

  1542. grace that

  1543. was to be

  1544. yours,

  1545. they searched

  1546. and inquired

  1547. carefully,

  1548. inquiring what

  1549. person or

  1550. time the

  1551. spirit of

  1552. Christ was

  1553. indicating when

  1554. he predicted

  1555. the sufferings

  1556. of Christ

  1557. and the

  1558. subsequent

  1559. glories.

  1560. And here

  1561. Peter wants

  1562. his audience

  1563. to know there

  1564. are times of

  1565. refreshing.

  1566. Yes,

  1567. you rejected

  1568. your Messiah.

  1569. Yes,

  1570. you delivered

  1571. him up to

  1572. Pilate.

  1573. Yes,

  1574. you turned

  1575. your back on

  1576. the author

  1577. of life.

  1578. Yes,

  1579. you put

  1580. him to

  1581. death,

  1582. but that

  1583. has not

  1584. disqualified

  1585. God's

  1586. promises to

  1587. you.

  1588. The invitation

  1589. is still

  1590. open.

  1591. The restoration

  1592. is still

  1593. waiting.

  1594. Will you

  1595. repent

  1596. in turn

  1597. in faith

  1598. and enjoy

  1599. the benefits

  1600. of this

  1601. promise?

  1602. God's promise

  1603. is still

  1604. intact.

  1605. We find

  1606. this promise

  1607. all through

  1608. the scriptures,

  1609. through the

  1610. prophets

  1611. that are

  1612. speaking to

  1613. us.

  1614. So receive

  1615. the message

  1616. of God's

  1617. promise

  1618. and respond

  1619. to the

  1620. call of

  1621. repentance.

  1622. And then

  1623. what we

  1624. find in

  1625. verse 22

  1626. and 23,

  1627. listen to

  1628. the witness

  1629. of the

  1630. prophets.

  1631. Listen to

  1632. the witness

  1633. of the

  1634. prophets.

  1635. Verse 22,

  1636. Moses said,

  1637. the Lord

  1638. God will

  1639. raise up

  1640. for you

  1641. a prophet

  1642. like me

  1643. from your

  1644. brothers.

  1645. You shall

  1646. listen to

  1647. him in

  1648. whatever he

  1649. tells you.

  1650. And it

  1651. shall be

  1652. that every

  1653. soul who

  1654. does not

  1655. listen to

  1656. that prophet

  1657. shall be

  1658. destroyed

  1659. from the

  1660. people.

  1661. And all

  1662. the prophets

  1663. who have

  1664. spoken from

  1665. Samuel and

  1666. those who

  1667. came after

  1668. him also

  1669. proclaimed

  1670. these days.

  1671. So listen

  1672. to the witness

  1673. of the prophets.

  1674. What did the

  1675. prophets say?

  1676. Well,

  1677. this first

  1678. prophet,

  1679. the most

  1680. prominent

  1681. prophet,

  1682. Moses,

  1683. would speak.

  1684. So listen

  1685. to the witness

  1686. of Moses,

  1687. this prophet.

  1688. God gave

  1689. Moses to

  1690. help build

  1691. a sense

  1692. of expectation.

  1693. What sort

  1694. of prophet,

  1695. what sort

  1696. of greater

  1697. prophet would

  1698. the people

  1699. look for?

  1700. Well, we

  1701. see in

  1702. Deuteronomy

  1703. several clues

  1704. of what this

  1705. prophet would

  1706. do.

  1707. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 18:18

  1708. chapter 18

  1709. verse 18

  1710. we find

  1711. that he

  1712. will speak

  1713. the words

  1714. of God.

  1715. I will

  1716. raise up

  1717. for them

  1718. a prophet

  1719. like you

  1720. from among

  1721. their brothers.

  1722. I will

  1723. put my

  1724. words in

  1725. his mouth.

  1726. He shall

  1727. speak to

  1728. them all

  1729. that I

  1730. commanded

  1731. him.

  1732. What do

  1733. you look

  1734. for?

  1735. Well, first

  1736. you look

  1737. for a prophet

  1738. who speaks

  1739. my words.

  1740. He's going

  1741. to speak

  1742. for me.

  1743. He's going

  1744. to speak

  1745. the truth.

  1746. He's going

  1747. to tell

  1748. you what

  1749. you need

  1750. to hear.

  1751. Those words

  1752. are going

  1753. to be coming

  1754. from me

  1755. directly.

  1756. Second,

  1757. you need

  1758. to be

  1759. looking for

  1760. a prophet

  1761. who speaks

  1762. with God's

  1763. authority.

  1764. Verse 19,

  1765. whoever will

  1766. not listen

  1767. to my

  1768. words

  1769. that he

  1770. shall speak

  1771. in my

  1772. name,

  1773. I

  1774. myself

  1775. will

  1776. require it

  1777. of him.

  1778. If you

  1779. don't listen

  1780. to the

  1781. words of

  1782. this prophet,

  1783. then you're

  1784. culpable.

  1785. You are

  1786. under obligation

  1787. to obey

  1788. the words

  1789. that I've

  1790. spoken.

  1791. so he

  1792. will speak

  1793. with God's

  1794. authority.

  1795. Third,

  1796. we're going

  1797. to find

  1798. that the

  1799. true prophet

  1800. will speak

  1801. words that

  1802. come true.

  1803. In verse

  1804. 22,

  1805. it says

  1806. this,

  1807. when a

  1808. prophet speaks

  1809. in the name

  1810. of the

  1811. Lord,

  1812. if the

  1813. word does

  1814. not come

  1815. to pass

  1816. or come

  1817. true,

  1818. that is a

  1819. word that

  1820. the Lord

  1821. has not

  1822. spoken.

  1823. The prophet

  1824. has spoken

  1825. it presumptuously.

  1826. you need

  1827. not be

  1828. afraid of

  1829. him.

  1830. He's going

  1831. to speak

  1832. words that

  1833. will come

  1834. to pass.

  1835. And finally,

  1836. fourth,

  1837. his life

  1838. will match

  1839. his message.

  1840. We find

  1841. that in

  1842. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 13:1

  1843. chapter 13

  1844. verses 1

  1845. and 3.

  1846. If a

  1847. prophet or

  1848. dreamer

  1849. of dreams

  1850. arises

  1851. among you

  1852. and gives

  1853. you a

  1854. sign or

  1855. a wonder

  1856. and that

  1857. sign or

  1858. wonder that

  1859. he tells

  1860. you comes

  1861. to pass

  1862. and if

  1863. he says

  1864. let us

  1865. go after

  1866. other gods

  1867. which you

  1868. have not

  1869. known

  1870. and let us

  1871. serve them

  1872. you shall

  1873. not listen

  1874. to the

  1875. words of

  1876. that prophet

  1877. or that

  1878. dreamer

  1879. of dreams

  1880. for the

  1881. Lord your

  1882. God is

  1883. testing you

  1884. to know

  1885. whether you

  1886. love the

  1887. Lord your

  1888. God

  1889. with all

  1890. your heart

  1891. and with

  1892. all your

  1893. soul.

  1894. There are

  1895. going to be

  1896. those false

  1897. prophets

  1898. and those

  1899. false prophets

  1900. may even

  1901. get it right

  1902. once in a

  1903. while.

  1904. But if you

  1905. can find

  1906. from the

  1907. trajectory

  1908. of their

  1909. life

  1910. that their

  1911. life is

  1912. out of

  1913. sync

  1914. with worship

  1915. of the

  1916. true God

  1917. then don't

  1918. follow them

  1919. because the

  1920. words of

  1921. the true

  1922. prophet will

  1923. be in

  1924. alignment

  1925. with the

  1926. testimony of

  1927. scripture.

  1928. His life

  1929. will match

  1930. his message.

  1931. And so when

  1932. people looked at

  1933. the life of

  1934. Jesus

  1935. they knew

  1936. here is a

  1937. prophet

  1938. he is one

  1939. who spoke

  1940. God's word

  1941. he is one

  1942. who spoke

  1943. with God's

  1944. authority

  1945. he is one

  1946. whose words

  1947. proved true

  1948. he is one

  1949. whose life

  1950. matched his

  1951. message

  1952. and because

  1953. of the

  1954. integrity

  1955. of Christ's

  1956. ministry

  1957. the people

  1958. thought

  1959. this must

  1960. be the

  1961. true prophet

  1962. we find

  1963. that in

  1964. John chapter

    John 6:14

  1965. 6 verse

  1966. 14

  1967. after the

  1968. people saw

  1969. the miraculous

  1970. sign that

  1971. Jesus did

  1972. they began

  1973. to say

  1974. surely

  1975. this is

  1976. the prophet

  1977. who has

  1978. come into

  1979. the world

  1980. and then in

  1981. John chapter

    John 7:40

  1982. 7 verse

  1983. 40

  1984. on hearing

  1985. his words

  1986. some of the

  1987. people said

  1988. surely

  1989. this man

  1990. is the

  1991. prophet

  1992. they knew

  1993. that Jesus

  1994. was the one

  1995. they knew

  1996. that he was

  1997. the greater

  1998. prophet

  1999. and yet they

  2000. still rejected

  2001. him

  2002. and we find

  2003. as a testimony

  2004. in this

  2005. passage

  2006. those who

  2007. do not

  2008. listen to

  2009. Jesus

  2010. shall be

  2011. destroyed

  2012. but that's

  2013. not

  2014. that's not

  2015. God's

  2016. hope

  2017. God

  2018. invites us

  2019. to enjoy

  2020. times of

  2021. refreshing

  2022. he doesn't

  2023. want us

  2024. to be

  2025. destroyed

  2026. he wants

  2027. us to

  2028. repent

  2029. to turn

  2030. away

  2031. from sin

  2032. to turn

  2033. to Christ

  2034. to enjoy

  2035. the blessing

  2036. that Christ

  2037. intends to

  2038. offer

  2039. and then we

  2040. have the

  2041. witness of

  2042. the prophets

  2043. in verse

  2044. 24

  2045. all the

  2046. prophets

  2047. who have

  2048. spoken from

  2049. Saul

  2050. and those

  2051. who came

  2052. after him

  2053. also

  2054. proclaimed

  2055. these days

  2056. you have

  2057. sufficient

  2058. voices

  2059. by the

  2060. mouth of

  2061. two or

  2062. three witnesses

  2063. a thing

  2064. shall be

  2065. established

  2066. God has

  2067. given you

  2068. plenty of

  2069. prophets

  2070. you know

  2071. exactly

  2072. who to

  2073. look for

  2074. and they

  2075. did

  2076. and that

  2077. they still

  2078. rejected

  2079. Jesus

  2080. finally

  2081. rest in

  2082. the blessings

  2083. of God's

  2084. servant

  2085. rest in

  2086. the blessings

  2087. of God's

  2088. servant

  2089. we find

  2090. the blessings

  2091. promised through

  2092. Abraham

  2093. in verse

  2094. 25

  2095. it says

  2096. you are

  2097. the sons

  2098. of the

  2099. prophets

  2100. and of

  2101. the covenant

  2102. that God

  2103. made with

  2104. your fathers

  2105. saying to

  2106. Abraham

  2107. in your

  2108. offspring

  2109. shall all

  2110. the families

  2111. of the earth

  2112. be blessed

  2113. in your

  2114. in your

  2115. offspring

  2116. shall all

  2117. the families

  2118. of the earth

  2119. be blessed

  2120. these were

  2121. promises given

  2122. to

  2123. the sons

  2124. of Abraham

  2125. they were

  2126. beneficiaries

  2127. of the promise

  2128. that God gave

  2129. all the way

  2130. back

  2131. thousands of

  2132. years

  2133. 1500 years

  2134. before the

  2135. time of

  2136. Christ

  2137. and those

  2138. promises

  2139. stood

  2140. and now

  2141. Peter wants

  2142. to direct

  2143. attention

  2144. to the fact

  2145. that those

  2146. promises

  2147. still stand

  2148. and you

  2149. are still

  2150. beneficiaries

  2151. of those

  2152. promises

  2153. if you

  2154. believe in

  2155. Jesus

  2156. those promises

  2157. of blessing

  2158. are intended

  2159. to be carried

  2160. through you

  2161. not in spite

  2162. of you

  2163. your rebellion

  2164. has not

  2165. cancelled

  2166. his promise

  2167. rather

  2168. your rebellion

  2169. has established

  2170. the need

  2171. for God's

  2172. solution

  2173. and has

  2174. given you

  2175. the opportunity

  2176. to carry

  2177. that promise

  2178. forward

  2179. to establish

  2180. once and

  2181. for all

  2182. that the

  2183. promises

  2184. to Abraham

  2185. are secure

  2186. and that's

  2187. what God

  2188. is working

  2189. out

  2190. through

  2191. the gospel

  2192. through the

  2193. gospel

  2194. of Christ

  2195. you see

  2196. it's through

  2197. faith

  2198. in the name

  2199. of Christ

  2200. that we get

  2201. to enjoy

  2202. the benefits

  2203. of the promises

  2204. originally given

  2205. to Abraham

  2206. we find that

  2207. in Galatians

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  2208. chapter 3

  2209. 6

  2210. it says

  2211. just as

  2212. Abraham

  2213. believed

  2214. God

  2215. and it

  2216. was

  2217. accounted

  2218. to him

  2219. as

  2220. righteousness

  2221. and the

  2222. scripture

  2223. foreseeing

  2224. that God

  2225. would justify

  2226. the Gentiles

  2227. by faith

  2228. preached that

  2229. gospel beforehand

  2230. to Abraham

  2231. saying

  2232. in you

  2233. all the

  2234. nations

  2235. shall be

  2236. blessed

  2237. so that

  2238. in Christ

  2239. Jesus

  2240. the blessing

  2241. of Abraham

  2242. might come

  2243. to the

  2244. Gentiles

  2245. so that

  2246. we might

  2247. receive the

  2248. promised

  2249. spirit

  2250. through faith

  2251. and now

  2252. through the

  2253. gospel

  2254. it all

  2255. comes

  2256. together

  2257. Jews

  2258. and Gentiles

  2259. enjoying the

  2260. benefits of

  2261. this original

  2262. promise

  2263. that was

  2264. preached

  2265. initially

  2266. to Abraham

  2267. and now

  2268. extends to

  2269. us

  2270. that those

  2271. who believe

  2272. in Christ

  2273. those who

  2274. come in

  2275. faith

  2276. will enjoy

  2277. the benefits

  2278. of Christ's

  2279. righteousness

  2280. accredited

  2281. to our

  2282. account

  2283. and finally

  2284. we see this

  2285. blessing fulfilled

  2286. in Jesus

  2287. in verse 26

  2288. God having

  2289. raised up

  2290. his servant

  2291. sent him

  2292. to you

  2293. first

  2294. to bless

  2295. you

  2296. by turning

  2297. every one

  2298. of you

  2299. from

  2300. your wickedness

  2301. that's the

  2302. blessing

  2303. that Jesus

  2304. extends

  2305. to all of

  2306. us

  2307. all of us

  2308. who at

  2309. one time

  2310. or the

  2311. other

  2312. have either

  2313. rejected

  2314. him

  2315. denied

  2316. him

  2317. opposed

  2318. him

  2319. been an

  2320. enemy

  2321. of him

  2322. whatever

  2323. whatever

  2324. sense

  2325. of the

  2326. term

  2327. that you

  2328. have been

  2329. hostile

  2330. to Jesus

  2331. God offers

  2332. this invitation

  2333. this invitation

  2334. for us to

  2335. enjoy the

  2336. benefits

  2337. of blessing

  2338. Jesus

  2339. came

  2340. to bless

  2341. to pour out

  2342. his blessing

  2343. by turning

  2344. us away

  2345. from wickedness

  2346. and that

  2347. only happens

  2348. when we

  2349. repent

  2350. in faith

  2351. and turn

  2352. to Christ

  2353. we ask

  2354. the Lord

  2355. Jesus

  2356. to undo

  2357. our

  2358. ignorance

  2359. to undo

  2360. the futility

  2361. of our

  2362. hearts

  2363. and to

  2364. draw us

  2365. into

  2366. truth

  2367. and knowledge

  2368. of him

  2369. so that we

  2370. can

  2371. participate

  2372. in faith

  2373. in Jesus

  2374. Christ

  2375. what a

  2376. wonderful

  2377. picture this

  2378. is

  2379. that the

  2380. Jews

  2381. who were

  2382. there

  2383. in Jerusalem

  2384. and likely

  2385. were the

  2386. ones to

  2387. say

  2388. crucify

  2389. him

  2390. are now

  2391. the ones

  2392. who can

  2393. be the

  2394. first

  2395. beneficiaries

  2396. of this

  2397. promise

  2398. and so

  2399. I want

  2400. you to

  2401. understand

  2402. whatever

  2403. whatever

  2404. your past

  2405. or even

  2406. your present

  2407. hostility

  2408. or sin

  2409. towards God

  2410. might be

  2411. whatever

  2412. whatever

  2413. rejection

  2414. of Christ

  2415. in the

  2416. message

  2417. of the

  2418. gospel

  2419. that has

  2420. been true

  2421. of you

  2422. whatever

  2423. whatever

  2424. skeletons

  2425. are in the

  2426. closet

  2427. that you

  2428. might have

  2429. whatever

  2430. things

  2431. that you

  2432. might be

  2433. ashamed

  2434. of

  2435. the

  2436. invitation

  2437. is still

  2438. there

  2439. Jesus

  2440. Christ

  2441. will

  2442. replace

  2443. that

  2444. wickedness

  2445. with his

  2446. righteousness

  2447. as you

  2448. confess your

  2449. sin

  2450. he is

  2451. faithful

  2452. and just

  2453. to forgive

  2454. your sin

  2455. and to

  2456. cleanse

  2457. you

  2458. from all

  2459. unrighteousness

  2460. not because

  2461. you deserve

  2462. it

  2463. not because

  2464. we deserve

  2465. it

  2466. not because

  2467. we have

  2468. merited

  2469. favor with

  2470. God

  2471. but because

  2472. of Christ's

  2473. mercy

  2474. and his

  2475. desire

  2476. to bless

  2477. you

  2478. and to

  2479. invite you

  2480. into times

  2481. of refreshing

  2482. have you

  2483. experienced

  2484. have you

  2485. enjoyed

  2486. the benefits

  2487. of that

  2488. refreshing

  2489. that's

  2490. the invitation

  2491. that Peter

  2492. ends with

  2493. here

  2494. and it

  2495. happens

  2496. through

  2497. repentance

  2498. it happens

  2499. through faith

  2500. in Jesus

  2501. have you

  2502. placed your

  2503. faith in

  2504. him

  2505. asked for

  2506. forgiveness

  2507. for your

  2508. sins

  2509. and entrusted

  2510. your life

  2511. to him

  2512. I trust

  2513. that that's

  2514. the case

  2515. and when

  2516. we do

  2517. when you

  2518. do

  2519. God wants

  2520. to lead

  2521. us

  2522. in the

  2523. direction

  2524. of being

  2525. able to

  2526. say

  2527. all my

  2528. boast

  2529. is in

  2530. Jesus

  2531. not just

  2532. privately

  2533. but publicly

  2534. we get to

  2535. experience the

  2536. benefits

  2537. of God's

  2538. work in

  2539. our life

  2540. and we

  2541. can't do

  2542. anything

  2543. more

  2544. than boast

  2545. about

  2546. can I

  2547. just tell

  2548. you

  2549. what God

  2550. has done

  2551. for me

  2552. that's

  2553. that's

  2554. what he

  2555. wants to

  2556. lead us

  2557. to

  2558. our

  2559. boast

  2560. is in

  2561. him

  2562. we

  2563. talk

  2564. about

  2565. him

  2566. we

  2567. can't

  2568. help

  2569. but

  2570. talk

  2571. about

  2572. him

  2573. wherever

  2574. we

  2575. are

  2576. our

  2577. life

  2578. is

  2579. in

  2580. the

  2581. flow

  2582. that

  2583. direction

  2584. has

  2585. changed

  2586. in

  2587. our

  2588. hearts

  2589. and

  2590. we

  2591. delight

  2592. in

  2593. telling

  2594. others

  2595. about

  2596. him

  2597. let me

  2598. pray

  2599. God

  2600. thank you

  2601. for your

  2602. son

  2603. Jesus

  2604. thank you

  2605. that he

  2606. is

  2607. your

  2608. servant

  2609. who

  2610. was

  2611. crushed

  2612. for

  2613. our

  2614. iniquities

  2615. so

  2616. that

  2617. the

  2618. chastisement

  2619. that

  2620. would

  2621. offer

  2622. us

  2623. peace

  2624. was

  2625. put

  2626. upon

  2627. him

  2628. so

  2629. that

  2630. by

  2631. his

  2632. stripes

  2633. we

  2634. can

  2635. be

  2636. healed

  2637. and

  2638. not

  2639. just

  2640. the

  2641. physical

  2642. things

  2643. can

  2644. be

  2645. healed

  2646. you

  2647. have

  2648. the

  2649. power

  2650. to do

  2651. that

  2652. but

  2653. more

  2654. importantly

  2655. that

  2656. the

  2657. deepest

  2658. needs

  2659. of our

  2660. life

  2661. the need

  2662. for

  2663. forgiveness

  2664. of our

  2665. sin

  2666. and the

  2667. need

  2668. for

  2669. restored

  2670. relationship

  2671. with

  2672. you

  2673. that's

  2674. what

  2675. you

  2676. offer

  2677. and we

  2678. thank you

  2679. for that

  2680. in Jesus

  2681. name

  2682. amen

  2683. God

  2684. bless

  2685. you

  2686. good to

  2687. see you

  2688. have a

  2689. great

  2690. week
