  1. Good morning.

  2. As has been said, I am not Pastor Andrew.

  3. ! Pastor Andrew spent the week, as John was just praying there, Pastor Andrew spent the week

  4. ! investing in the teens in their mission trip to Skyview Ranch.

  5. And as he was doing that, then I have the opportunity to bring the word this morning.

  6. So we look forward to hearing the report.

  7. In our family, we got maybe a little bit of a sneak preview with our son Ethan being on the trip.

  8. Got to see some of the pictures and hear some of the stories, but neat to hear how God was working.

  9. So all that to say, my name is Andy Manwiller.

  10. My family and I, we've been coming for about 17 years here to Maranatha.

  11. My wife and I have been married for 26 years, 9 months, 26 days.

  12. We have 4 awesome kids.

  13. It is so much fun.

  14. But I love reading, listening to God's word.

  15. I love teaching and sharing what God is teaching me.

  16. So I'm thankful for the opportunity to share this morning.

  17. So let's go ahead and pray again.

  18. You can never pray too much.

  19. And as I pray out loud, you pray quietly, as Pastor Conner used to say.

  20. You can multitask during the message.

  21. You can listen and you can pray for me.

  22. And we'll dig into God's word together.

  23. So let's pray.

  24. Thank you, God, for your word, that it is truth.

  25. And we pray this morning that you would sanctify us through your truth.

  26. May your words be many and mine be few.

  27. And I just pray that this would be a sweet time of digging into your word together.

  28. That we would leave here changed by the singing, the fellowship, the word, just this opportunity to be in your house.

  29. Thank you, God, for the freedom we have to do this.

  30. May we not take it for granted and use it for the fullest for your kingdom and your glory.

  31. So take this time and use it in our lives.

  32. And equip us to go and be the church and do what you've called us to do this week.

  33. In Jesus' name, amen.

  34. Have you ever felt like God wanted you to do something that you didn't really feel capable of doing?

  35. Or maybe calling you to do something that maybe you don't want to do, you're not willing to do.

  36. Maybe it's sharing the gospel with someone.

  37. Maybe it's trusting in the gospel for ourselves.

  38. Maybe you're playing the game and it's time to do business with God.

  39. Maybe it's getting to know our neighbors.

  40. Maybe it's serving in church somewhere.

  41. Maybe it's investing more in our families.

  42. Investing in our relationship with our spouse.

  43. Investing into our children.

  44. Whatever it is, God calls us to do these things.

  45. God has things for us to do that, again, sometimes we're maybe not able to do.

  46. Or maybe we're not willing.

  47. And today we're going to be looking at another example.

  48. One of the many examples.

  49. Last week we looked at Barak and he seemed a bit unwilling.

  50. If you go with me, I'll do this.

  51. Today we're going to look at another judge.

  52. And just part one, I believe in two weeks, I think Pastor David is going to be preaching part two of Gideon.

  53. But we'll see Gideon's fear, his apprehension.

  54. And maybe we can identify with that.

  55. And then God can use that to open our eyes and challenge us to grow and serve him even with things that we don't think we can do.

  56. Or things maybe we're not willing to do.

  57. So the background, we're going through Judges this summer.

  58. And just a reminder of it, one of the saddest verses in the Bible is in Judges 2.10.

  59. So if we look at Judges 2.10, it says,

  60. I mean, this is crazy.

  61. This is, you read through the Pentateuch, Genesis through Deuteronomy, and even Joshua.

  62. And you see what God had done, bringing them out of the land of Egypt and doing all these miracles.

  63. And then that generation didn't pass that on to their children.

  64. It's been said that Christianity is never more than one generation away from extinction.

  65. All it takes is one generation to not pass on the truth.

  66. And Christianity goes away.

  67. Now, God will not allow that to happen.

  68. His word is true and he is always at work.

  69. But we need to be passing that on.

  70. And so from this, all those great things God had done, and then a generation rose up that wasn't taught, wasn't told these things.

  71. And then we see there's this cycle.

  72. And verses 11 through 15 kind of give us that cycle.

  73. Pastor Andrew and others have kind of talked us through this.

  74. But look at verse 11.

  75. And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals.

  76. There's this cycle of when we forget God and we turn to sin and we run from him.

  77. And we see this cycle happening over and over.

  78. We've already seen three iterations of this.

  79. In chapter 3, in Judges 3 verse 7, it says,

    Judges 3:7

  80. And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  81. They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth.

  82. That's the setup where the people turned away from God.

  83. God brought pain into their lives.

  84. They called out to him.

  85. He rose up a judge.

  86. In this case, it was Othniel.

  87. And he delivered them.

  88. And this cycle that happens over and over again.

  89. And this was the first iteration of that.

  90. Look at verse 12.

  91. And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  92. And he strengthened Eglon.

  93. And this was the setup.

  94. There's this cycle.

  95. How many times did the Israelis have to go through that cycle?

  96. How many times do I have to go through that cycle?

  97. Chapter 4 verse 1.

  98. And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  99. After Ehud died.

  100. They were following a person rather than God himself.

  101. The people would turn away from God.

  102. And God would bring pain into their lives.

  103. God brings pain into our lives for our good.

  104. With my children.

  105. There's not much better in life than being a husband and father.

  106. Being a dad is so fun.

  107. It is so cool.

  108. But sometimes that does mean teaching and training and disciplining my children.

  109. Not just trying to zap them when they do something wrong.

  110. But when they sin, when they disobey, they're hurting themselves.

  111. They're setting themselves up for worse failures.

  112. And I want to bring pain into their lives.

  113. As I've heard it said, turn up the heat.

  114. To get their attention.

  115. To turn them back to what is right.

  116. To me.

  117. But ultimately to God himself.

  118. And that is what God is doing.

  119. God's discipline is always for our good.

  120. Whether it's discipline that comes because of my own sinful responses.

  121. Or sometimes he just brings pain into our lives.

  122. Because of the circumstances around us.

  123. And so God is always trying to get our attention.

  124. That's kind of the main point we want to look at today.

  125. That God is with us.

  126. We'll see how we should respond to that then.

  127. And God is always working.

  128. Am I working with him?

  129. So this cycle, we've already looked at three different cycles.

  130. Starting in chapter 6.

  131. So today, again, we're going to go through all of chapter 6.

  132. I've got 40 verses and 32 minutes.

  133. Here we go.

  134. I'll try not to go too long.

  135. But that's all right.

  136. Verse 1.

  137. Here's the setup for Gideon.

  138. The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  139. And the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian seven years.

  140. This is now the fourth time in the book where we see this cycle happening.

  141. And this time, the pain is Midian.

  142. It was kind of fun.

  143. I'll try not to take too much time on this.

  144. It was kind of fun just looking up all the times Midian appeared in the Old Testament.

  145. Who is Midian?

  146. Midian was actually a son of Abraham by Keturah in Genesis 25.

  147. After Sarah had died, he had another wife and he had Midian.

  148. Midian moved east.

  149. He's connected with Moab and the Ishmaelites.

  150. And they were often kind of a thorn in Israel's side.

  151. God used them often to bring discipline, pain, discomfort to turn their attention to God.

  152. The traders who sold Joseph into slavery in Genesis 37.

  153. It's the Ishmaelites, but the Midianites are also mentioned there.

  154. It's almost synonymous a little bit.

  155. So again, they're connected in that way.

  156. When Moses killed a man, he tried to deliver God's people in his way instead of God's way.

  157. He fled and he fled to the land of Midian.

  158. And his father-in-law was the priest of Midian.

  159. If you remember the story of Balaam and the donkey, the donkey that talked,

  160. the Midianites were a part of the group that wanted to have Balaam curse Israel.

  161. And when that didn't work, Balaam was sneaky.

  162. It's fascinating if you read through it.

  163. Balaam then had them sneakily introduce sexual sin into the nation of Israel to try and undercut what God was doing.

  164. And it was actually a Midianite woman that was brought into the camp.

  165. I hadn't noticed that before.

  166. And putting that together, that was in Numbers 25.

  167. And Moses ultimately was told to take vengeance on Midian.

  168. So there's this give and take.

  169. And God used these people in the lives of Israel to bring pain and to draw him back to him.

  170. Does God sometimes bring challenging people into our lives to point us back to him?

  171. How do I respond to that?

  172. So let's see what happens.

  173. So there's the setup.

  174. Again, the people turn from God.

  175. God brings pain into their lives to draw them back to him.

  176. Verse 2.

  177. And the hand of Midian overpowered Israel.

  178. And because of Midian, the people of Israel made for themselves the dens that are in the mountains,

  179. and the caves, and the strongholds.

  180. So because of the oppression, they're trying to survive.

  181. And it's kind of fun as you read through Scripture.

  182. When in 1 Samuel, 1 and 2 Samuel and such, when David is running from Saul,

  183. he hides out in the caves and the dens.

  184. And I think this is kind of where those came about.

  185. It's kind of cool.

  186. As you look through that, like he didn't make them himself.

  187. They were already there.

  188. But anyway, Scripture ties together.

  189. And just dig into Scripture.

  190. God's Word is the foundation, not just for an academic exercise,

  191. but to know the God of the Word.

  192. Anyway, I just thought that was kind of neat.

  193. So they're hiding.

  194. They're trying to find these secret places so they're not found.

  195. Why?

  196. What was happening?

  197. What was Midian doing?

  198. Let's look at verses 3 through 5.

  199. For whenever the Israelites planted crops,

  200. the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east would come up against them.

  201. They would encamp against them and devour the produce of the land as far as Gaza

  202. and leave no sustenance in Israel and no sheep or ox or donkey.

  203. For they would come up with their livestock and their tents.

  204. They would come like locusts in number.

  205. Both they and their camels could not be counted,

  206. so that they laid waste the land as they came in.

  207. We can't even imagine this.

  208. We can't even fathom this.

  209. We live in such peace and prosperity.

  210. Yes, things are hard.

  211. Yes, circumstances.

  212. And you could point to all kinds of things going bad.

  213. But can you imagine living in this,

  214. where it's not just like, oh, prices are up or whatever like that.

  215. Like people are coming and stealing,

  216. and there's literally nothing left.

  217. This discomfort, we can't even fathom this.

  218. God actually calls us, back even from Genesis,

  219. we are called to bring order out of chaos.

  220. We did a work, a connect group work study,

  221. and we talked about this one of the weeks that I taught.

  222. And God, one of our jobs in life is to bring order out of chaos in your home.

  223. We have to bring order out of chaos because chaos happens naturally,

  224. but we bring order.

  225. That's part of being good stewards of this world and bring order out of chaos.

  226. But these people were destroyers.

  227. They were disruptors.

  228. May we not be destroyers and disruptors,

  229. but may we be bringing order out of chaos.

  230. And they were suffering these consequences,

  231. these people coming in and just causing chaos in their lives

  232. to an extent, again, that we can't even begin to fathom.

  233. And we don't have time to dig into it,

  234. but I'd encourage you sometime to read through Deuteronomy 28,

  235. and it's paralleled in Leviticus 26.

  236. Deuteronomy 28 is really clear.

  237. It's really cool.

  238. God says, God gives some blessings if they obey.

  239. God's rules and guidelines are always for our good, okay?

  240. God's rules and guidelines are always for our good,

  241. even if it doesn't feel like it.

  242. And he says, if you obey me, you'll have blessing.

  243. Now, we are not, we are under a different covenant,

  244. but the concepts are true.

  245. The Proverbs, these things are generally true.

  246. And he would say, if you obey, this is what's going to happen.

  247. But he also promised them, if you disobey, this is going to happen.

  248. And if you still don't turn to me, this is going to happen.

  249. And if you still don't turn to me, this, and if you read through it,

  250. it's fascinating to see the cycle, the downward, it's going to get worse and worse.

  251. And I think we're kind of in this.

  252. And as has been mentioned, like Pastor Andrew talked about,

  253. not necessarily looking forward to some of the end chapters, right?

  254. And just the horrid mess that is the book of Judges.

  255. And that can be my life and your life if we don't heed the warnings.

  256. God keeps his promises.

  257. And that's also true of not just giving us the fruit of the Spirit and love, joy, peace,

  258. patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

  259. But it's also that he will bring pain into our lives to draw us to him.

  260. Again, God's goal in his rules, his guidelines, and the circumstances he brings

  261. is always to turn our attention to him.

  262. So may we fix our eyes on him.

  263. So what happens here?

  264. So we got the setup.

  265. They turned from God.

  266. God brought the Midianites.

  267. Things are bad.

  268. Verse 6.

  269. And Israel was brought very low because of Midian.

  270. And the people of Israel cried out for help to the Lord.

  271. This is what we should do.

  272. Do we allow difficulties in our lives, whether brought about by our own sin

  273. or just because we live in a broken world,

  274. do we allow those things to turn our attention to God?

  275. 1 Thessalonians 5.17 says to pray without ceasing.

  276. And the idea there is just being in that constant attitude, that mindset of prayer,

  277. that whenever something good happens, our first response should be,

  278. thank you, God, for this.

  279. And as soon as something bad happens, our response should be,

  280. God, what do you want me to learn?

  281. God, how can you show your glory?

  282. How can I make you look good in this?

  283. What do I do?

  284. Our first response should be to turn to God.

  285. And that's what the people of Israel finally did.

  286. May we be quicker to turn to him in our circumstances.

  287. So that's the background.

  288. What does God do when the people turn to him?

  289. Let's read verses 7 to 10.

  290. When the people cried out to the Lord on account of the Midianites,

  291. the Lord sent a prophet to the people of Israel.

  292. And he said to them,

  293. God sent a prophet.

  294. God reminds them of what he's done for them.

  295. He reminds them of how they've been rescued from slavery.

  296. He shows them how they've fallen short of his glory and how they've disobeyed him.

  297. And that the goal, again, is always obeying his voice.

  298. God's rules, his guidelines, his directions, his instructions, his tasks

  299. are always for our good and his glory.

  300. He sent a prophet.

  301. Today, he's given us his word.

  302. He's given us pastors and teachers.

  303. He's given us the church.

  304. I am so thankful for this church.

  305. This is our church family.

  306. And we have pastors who preach the word to us faithfully.

  307. Pastors and leaders who invest in our lives.

  308. God has sent us his word.

  309. Am I listening?

  310. Am I listening?

  311. Not just going through it rote.

  312. Like, oh, I read my Bible today.

  313. Check the box.

  314. Oh, I went to church today.

  315. Check the box.

  316. But no, are you here to listen?

  317. Are you here to hear from God and his word?

  318. When you read the Bible, do you read it on a regular basis?

  319. And do you listen?

  320. Listen, God is giving.

  321. God is calling to us all the time.

  322. But am I listening?

  323. Is my heart hard?

  324. Or am I listening?

  325. Tom Zentz, a few weeks ago on Memorial Day, talked about how we need constant reminders.

  326. May we humble ourselves to recognize, I need these reminders.

  327. I have been brought out of the house of slavery of my own sin.

  328. I am a slave.

  329. I'm either going to be a slave to sin or a slave to God.

  330. You tell me what you think is the better taskmaster.

  331. I want to be a slave to the God who loves me and has my best in mind for my good and his glory.

  332. May we be reminded of the truth of the gospel and live in it every day.

  333. So that's the background.

  334. It's verses 1 through 10.

  335. The next section, and that was, if you're following along, I don't have my slides up there.

  336. That's all right.

  337. I'll tell you what the blanks are.

  338. Cycle of apostasy was the first one.

  339. A-P-O-S-T-A-S-Y, if anyone wants to spell it there.

  340. The second one is Gideon's call.

  341. Gideon's call.

  342. So we have the background.

  343. The people called out to God.

  344. And God sent them a judge.

  345. Someone to deliver them.

  346. And here is the call.

  347. And we're focusing on his story today.

  348. Verse 11.

  349. So there's this guy, Joash.

  350. He's from the tribe of Abiezer, which is in Manasseh.

  351. We'll see that come up later.

  352. And the angel of the Lord.

  353. I'll let Pastor Andrew go into all the theological details of who the angel of the Lord is.

  354. But for now, this is God speaking to Gideon.

  355. And where's Gideon?

  356. Gideon is scared.

  357. He's hiding.

  358. He's trying to provide for himself and his family.

  359. He's in the wine press.

  360. So that was a place that was lower, underground.

  361. And they would, like, the threshing of the wheat, they're throwing it up.

  362. And the wind would blow away the chaff so that you have just the good stuff left.

  363. But he's in a pit trying to hide.

  364. And so it's hard work.

  365. He's scared.

  366. He's hiding.

  367. He's still trying to provide for his family.

  368. He's trying to make it through.

  369. Do we find ourselves maybe sometimes in those circumstances?

  370. Life is hard.

  371. And we just, Proverbs 37, try again.

  372. Psalm 37, 3 is a verse I want you to write down and think through as we go through this.

  373. Trust in the Lord and do good.

  374. Gideon's doing that.

  375. We'll see his faith to a certain degree here in a minute.

  376. But Gideon's doing that.

  377. The angel of the Lord comes, hangs out under a tree.

  378. And then he speaks to Gideon.

  379. Let's look at verse 12.

  380. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him,

  381. The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.

  382. He's got the right guy?

  383. Gideon's hiding in a pit trying to do his work in a way that doesn't even work very well.

  384. And he calls him a mighty man of valor.

  385. And he says, and this is key as well,

  386. The Lord is with you.

  387. This is a theme in the Old Testament.

  388. This is a theme throughout the whole Bible from the beginning to the end.

  389. The Lord is with you.

  390. So remember, God is with us today as well.

  391. But this is fascinating, right?

  392. He calls Gideon a mighty man of valor.

  393. Was Gideon acting like it?

  394. No.

  395. He was not acting like it.

  396. But God saw something in him.

  397. Or more likely,

  398. God saw what he was going to equip him to become

  399. something more than he is now.

  400. The world will tell you,

  401. Look within yourself.

  402. Follow your heart.

  403. Lies.

  404. Don't believe it for a minute.

  405. But God saw something that he was going to do in Gideon.

  406. And so, you know what?

  407. Gideon couldn't do this.

  408. Gideon didn't even want to do this,

  409. as we'll see necessarily.

  410. But God is calling in him.

  411. God was going to work in him

  412. to will and to do of his good pleasure.

  413. It's a verse we're going to look at at the end.

  414. God sees things that he's going to do in us.

  415. He calls us to do things that we're not doing right now.

  416. He calls us to be things that we aren't right now.

  417. And let's see how Gideon responds.

  418. Verse 13.

  419. And Gideon said to him,

  420. Please, sir, if the Lord is with us,

  421. why then has all this happened to us?

  422. And where are all his wonderful deeds

  423. that our fathers recounted to us,

  424. saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?

  425. But now the Lord has forsaken us

  426. and given us into the hand of Midian.

  427. Okay, I definitely read that with a certain tone.

  428. That's how I think he said it.

  429. You might think differently.

  430. But clearly, regardless,

  431. he clearly doubted.

  432. But the fascinating thing is he knew the truth.

  433. He knew the stories of what God had done.

  434. While Judges 2.10 was true,

  435. apparently his father had passed some truth on to him.

  436. We'll be talking about his father more here in a minute.

  437. But he heard the stories.

  438. He knew of it.

  439. But the fact is,

  440. he didn't see it right now.

  441. His circumstances and his feelings

  442. did not match the truth that he knew.

  443. Can anyone else identify with that?

  444. Because I can.

  445. I don't know.

  446. I have struggled with a lot of things

  447. in the last year, several years.

  448. But God is so good.

  449. But circumstances and what I know to be true

  450. don't always match.

  451. Does that mean that I'm disqualified?

  452. Does that mean that we're disqualified

  453. if we have doubts?

  454. If we're with Gideon and we doubt?

  455. And maybe even we say these things to God,

  456. maybe even with a tone?

  457. Well, see, the answer is no.

  458. Gideon poured out his heart.

  459. He shared what he thought.

  460. David, in the Psalms,

  461. pours out his heart.

  462. Some of the Psalms are hard to read.

  463. It's okay.

  464. The key is he's going to God.

  465. He's responding to God

  466. and his work in his life.

  467. So verse 14.

  468. Gideon says,

  469. yeah, whatever,

  470. whatever's going on.

  471. But verse 14,

  472. Did he answer Gideon's question?

  473. No, he didn't.

  474. Which sounds a little bit like Job, right?

  475. Job did not get direct answers.

  476. If you remember last summer

  477. when we went through Job,

  478. the main point of that

  479. when we got to the end was

  480. just trust God.

  481. Fix your eyes on him

  482. and do what he's calling you to do.

  483. Trust him in the midst

  484. of your circumstances.

  485. And Gideon gets a similar answer.

  486. He gives Gideon a task.

  487. He says,

  488. go and save your people.

  489. But more importantly,

  490. it was God

  491. who was telling him to do this.

  492. God gave him clear instructions.

  493. Has God given us

  494. any clear instructions?

  495. If you open your Bible,

  496. can you find some clear instructions?

  497. Husbands,

  498. love your wives

  499. as Christ loved the church.

  500. Don't focus on her part.

  501. Focus on yours.

  502. That's not today's topic though.

  503. Children,

  504. obey your parents.

  505. Fathers,

  506. bring up your children

  507. in the nurture

  508. and admonition of the Lord.

  509. Speak the truth

  510. in love.

  511. There's so many instructions

  512. we have been given.

  513. We have been given tasks

  514. and therefore are good.

  515. They're not easy.

  516. We don't always feel

  517. like doing them.

  518. They don't always work

  519. the way we want.

  520. But God has clearly

  521. given us tasks.

  522. And even the Great Commission,

  523. God has clearly given us

  524. that task.

  525. Our main goal in life

  526. is to glorify God.

  527. And one of the best ways

  528. we do that

  529. is by going

  530. as we go

  531. into all the world,

  532. preach the gospel,

  533. make disciples.

  534. We have been clearly

  535. sent to do this.

  536. What was Gideon's response?

  537. And Gideon said to him,

  538. please Lord,

  539. how can I save Israel?

  540. Behold,

  541. my clan is the weakest

  542. in Manasseh

  543. and I am the least

  544. in my father's house.

  545. Again,

  546. he's responding honestly

  547. and it may be factual.

  548. He's hiding in a wine press

  549. using it for a task

  550. that it's not designed to do.

  551. His family apparently

  552. is small in the tribe.

  553. I'm just going to take

  554. his word for it

  555. at that point.

  556. But Manasseh is a small tribe.

  557. In fact,

  558. half the tribe's

  559. on the other side

  560. of the Jordan,

  561. if you remember.

  562. Half of them settled

  563. over there.

  564. So it's a smaller,

  565. they took a lot of land,

  566. but so he's struggling.

  567. He's looking at it.

  568. How can I do this?

  569. It's an honest assessment.

  570. But where's his focus?

  571. His focus is still

  572. on himself.

  573. His focus is still

  574. on who he and his family

  575. are on their own

  576. without God.

  577. Moses did this

  578. when God called him.

  579. If you read through

  580. Exodus chapter 2 and 3,

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  581. you'll see Moses

  582. throws up five excuses

  583. and God sometimes

  584. doesn't even directly

  585. answer them.

  586. It's all about God

  587. focusing on him.

  588. Giving excuses.

  589. May we not give excuses.

  590. And again,

  591. it could be,

  592. I think God is revealing

  593. how empty Gideon is.

  594. How needy Gideon is.

  595. He doesn't see God working.

  596. We saw that in verse 13.

  597. And he knows that

  598. he's not sufficient

  599. to do these things.

  600. God brings us

  601. to our lowest point

  602. so he can fill us

  603. with himself.

  604. Because it's God

  605. who gets the glory,

  606. not us.

  607. And God can use us.

  608. We can do great things

  609. for him.

  610. But it's not

  611. in our own strength.

  612. And sometimes God needs

  613. to bring us

  614. to the end of ourselves.

  615. Would it be better

  616. to humble ourselves

  617. before the Lord

  618. and he will lift us up

  619. as James said

  620. rather than having him

  621. humble us?

  622. That God opposes the proud

  623. but gives grace

  624. to the humble

  625. again in James.

  626. So God is revealing

  627. his need.

  628. And so what happens here

  629. in verse 16?

  630. Again, the focus

  631. is not on Gideon.

  632. The focus is not

  633. on his family.

  634. The focus is on God himself.

  635. God has called him

  636. to do this thing.

  637. Again, this is a theme

  638. throughout the whole Bible

  639. including in Revelation.

  640. One of the best parts

  641. of being in heaven forever

  642. is God's presence

  643. with us

  644. in an even more

  645. tangible way.

  646. God will be

  647. with his people

  648. and he will be

  649. our God

  650. and he will be with us.

  651. It's I will be with you.

  652. Whatever God

  653. is calling you to do,

  654. whatever hard things

  655. are happening in work,

  656. I've talked to many of you

  657. about my work, right?

  658. God is with you

  659. wherever you are

  660. no matter how hard it is,

  661. no matter what is going on,

  662. God is with you.

  663. You are not alone.

  664. You also have

  665. the body of Christ

  666. but God is with us.

  667. And he says

  668. you're going to strike

  669. the Midianites

  670. as one man.

  671. You'll have victory

  672. as I am with you.

  673. We have been given

  674. tasks as well.

  675. Again,

  676. family,

  677. church,

  678. all these different things.

  679. I do want to just talk

  680. very briefly about

  681. Matthew chapter 28,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  682. the Great Commission.

  683. We tend to focus

  684. on the fact,

  685. go therefore

  686. and make disciples

  687. of all nations,

  688. baptizing them

  689. in the name of the Father

  690. and the Son

  691. and the Holy Spirit,

  692. teaching them to observe

  693. all that I have commanded you.

  694. Don't forget the end.

  695. Behold,

  696. I am with you

  697. always to the end

  698. of the age.

  699. God is with us.

  700. We tend to also forget

  701. verse 18.

  702. Let me read that one.

  703. All authority

  704. in heaven

  705. and on earth

  706. has been given to me.

  707. Go therefore.

  708. God is the one

  709. who has called us

  710. to these things

  711. and who is sufficient

  712. for these things.

  713. Nobody,

  714. but God is

  715. and God will work

  716. through us.

  717. Like Gideon,

  718. we need to get our eyes

  719. off of ourselves

  720. and on to God

  721. when God says,

  722. I will be with you.

  723. Let's go

  724. and take steps of faith,

  725. trust in the Lord

  726. and do good.

  727. After this,

  728. we'll see how Gideon responds

  729. just like any of us would do.

  730. More doubt.

  731. But God is so gracious.

  732. Look at verses 17 and 18.

  733. And he, Gideon,

  734. said to him,

  735. If now I have found favor

  736. in your eyes,

  737. then show me a sign

  738. that it is you

  739. who speak with me.

  740. Please do not depart

  741. from here

  742. until I come to you

  743. and bring out my present

  744. and set it before you.

  745. And he said,

  746. I will stay

  747. until you return.

  748. This is again

  749. the setup

  750. for the next paragraph.

  751. He's asking for a sign.

  752. Verse 19.

  753. So Gideon went,

  754. Gideon went into the house,

  755. prepared a young goat,

  756. unleavened cakes

  757. from an ephah flour,

  758. the meat he put in a basket

  759. and the broth he put in a pot.

  760. He brought them to him

  761. under the terebinth

  762. and presented them.

  763. Gideon wants to show hospitality.

  764. Gideon wants to show his hospitality

  765. by providing a meal.

  766. And what happens here?

  767. There's more.

  768. What does the angel of the Lord

  769. do with this?

  770. The angel of God said to him,

  771. Take the meat

  772. and the unleavened cakes

  773. and put them on this rock

  774. and pour the broth over them.

  775. And he did so.

  776. Then the angel of the Lord

  777. reached out the tip of the staff

  778. that was in his hand

  779. and touched the meat

  780. and the unleavened cakes

  781. and fire sprang up from the rock

  782. and consumed the meat

  783. and the unleavened cakes.

  784. And the angel of the Lord

  785. vanished from his sight.

  786. It's kind of like Elijah

  787. pouring water on the sacrifice.

  788. But that happened after this,

  789. so I can't use that

  790. as an illustration.

  791. But Gideon probably had in mind,

  792. he knew the scripture,

  793. he knew the stories.

  794. Back in Leviticus 9,

    Leviticus 9:23

  795. verses 23 and 24,

  796. I don't have time

  797. to look at that right now,

  798. but you can go look that up later.

  799. Back in Leviticus 9,

  800. 23 and 24,

  801. when Aaron,

  802. the priest,

  803. was consecrated

  804. and they made a sacrifice,

  805. the glory of the Lord

  806. appeared to the people

  807. and fire came out

  808. and consumed the offering.

  809. God had appeared to him

  810. and fire came out

  811. and consumed the offering.

  812. God was there.

  813. God was present.

  814. And so what was his response?

  815. Look at verse 22.

  816. Then Gideon perceived

  817. that it was the angel of the Lord.

  818. And Gideon said,

  819. Alas, O Lord God,

  820. for now I have seen

  821. the angel of the Lord

  822. face to face.

  823. What was me?

  824. There is humility here.

  825. He recognizes

  826. that in God's presence,

  827. he is nothing.

  828. And this happens

  829. throughout scripture.

  830. Job,

  831. when God confronts him,

  832. he puts his hand

  833. over his mouth.

  834. He repents

  835. and dust and ashes.

  836. Moses,

  837. at the burning bush,

  838. he takes his sandals off

  839. because he's on holy ground.

  840. Isaiah,

  841. when he sees God,

  842. says,

  843. Woe is me,

  844. for I am undone.

  845. I am a man of unclean lips

  846. and I live among

  847. a people of unclean lips.

  848. We see this again

  849. in a little bit

  850. with Samson

  851. and his parents.

  852. The only valid response

  853. to realizing

  854. God is at work

  855. is to humble ourselves,

  856. to recognize

  857. who we are

  858. and who God is.

  859. Do we turn

  860. our attention to him?

  861. Do we allow

  862. our circumstances

  863. to point us to him?

  864. How does God respond

  865. to Gideon's recognition?

  866. Verse 23,

  867. But the Lord said to him,

  868. Peace be to you.

  869. Do not fear.

  870. You shall not die.

  871. When all this is going on,

  872. my circumstances

  873. are out of my control.

  874. When I am lost

  875. and I am undone

  876. and I'm seeing God working,

  877. God brings peace.

  878. So often throughout Scripture

  879. when an angel appears

  880. to a person,

  881. he says,

  882. Peace be to you

  883. because they're ready

  884. to freak out.

  885. When Jesus appeared

  886. to the disciples

  887. after he rose from the dead,

  888. he said,

  889. Peace be to you.

  890. He said it like two or three times

  891. because they needed it.

  892. I need that.

  893. I get so anxious.

  894. I don't know about you,

  895. but I'm getting older

  896. and so like feelings

  897. are bigger now.

  898. It's like this is weird.

  899. I shared some things

  900. that are going on

  901. and at least two people

  902. said to me,

  903. Oh, you're telling me

  904. you're in your 40s.

  905. Okay, message received.

  906. Life changes

  907. and sometimes it's hard

  908. and sometimes it's good,

  909. but regardless of where we're at,

  910. God is in control

  911. and if I fix my eyes on him,

  912. there is peace.

  913. God's kingdom

  914. is not of this world.

  915. He does not promise

  916. a nation to rise up

  917. and that's like the Jews

  918. thought they were going to rise up

  919. and take out the Romans.

  920. That's not what God promises us.

  921. His kingdom

  922. is not of this world,

  923. but it is of the heart

  924. and what God promises us

  925. is not comfort

  926. and ease

  927. and riches.

  928. It's not what he promises.

  929. He promises us

  930. love,

  931. joy,

  932. peace,

  933. patience,

  934. kindness,

  935. goodness,

  936. faithfulness,

  937. gentleness,

  938. and self-control.

  939. That's the fruit,

  940. the evidence

  941. of the spirit

  942. of God working in us

  943. and that is so much better

  944. than anything else

  945. whether we have

  946. great riches

  947. and great things

  948. or we have not.

  949. The kingdom of God

  950. is of the heart

  951. and as we rest in him,

  952. he gives us

  953. and brings us peace.

  954. We need that.

  955. We need to fix our eyes

  956. on God himself.

  957. And so what happens

  958. when Gideon realizes this

  959. in verse 24?

  960. Then Gideon built

  961. an altar there

  962. to the Lord

  963. and called it

  964. the Lord is peace.

  965. To this day,

  966. it still stands

  967. in Ophrah

  968. which belongs

  969. to the Abiezrites.

  970. Another good response

  971. to realizing

  972. that God is at work

  973. is building a reminder.

  974. We are forgetful people.

  975. Again,

  976. Tom Zent shared that

  977. with us

  978. on the Memorial Day service

  979. and it's been said

  980. from the pulpit

  981. many times,

  982. I am a forgetful person.

  983. We are forgetful people.

  984. I need reminders.

  985. Do you have any reminders

  986. of when God

  987. was working in your life?

  988. We have black lava rock

  989. out in front.

  990. We've chosen that

  991. as our landscaping

  992. because you don't have

  993. to do it every year.

  994. But my wife

  995. has taken some rocks

  996. and painted them white

  997. and written on them

  998. things that God has done.

  999. So when you go out front

  1000. out of our door,

  1001. there's these bright white

  1002. reminders of what God

  1003. has done.

  1004. It's just a small thing.

  1005. I'm very good

  1006. at forgetting them.

  1007. I'm very good

1008. at walking right past them

  1009. and not remembering them

  1010. or letting them

1011. focus my mind on him.

1012. But I have the opportunity.

1013. Do you have any reminders

1014. of what God has done

  1015. in your life?

1016. So that when you face

  1017. hard times,

  1018. you can look back

1019. and see God has done

  1020. this for me.

  1021. God has done this

  1022. for the Israelites.

1023. God is going to take care

  1024. of me now

  1025. as I go forward.

  1026. Setting up these reminders

  1027. of who God is

  1028. and what he's done.

  1029. Jacob did this

  1030. with his rock pillow.

1031. The two and a half tribes

1032. at the end of Judges

  1033. do this.

1034. They set up a reminder.

1035. Hey, we are a part of you.

  1036. We need reminders.

  1037. We are forgetful.

  1038. Even Peter and Paul

  1039. talk about reminding

  1040. people of truths.

  1041. I need these reminders

  1042. and I'm guessing

  1043. you do too.

  1044. So we move into

  1045. the next paragraph

  1046. starting in verse 25.

  1047. It brings us

  1048. to the third point.

  1049. So the first point,

  1050. cycle of apostasy.

  1051. Second was Gideon's call.

  1052. The third is Gideon's

  1053. first step.

  1054. S-T-E-P, step.

1055. So God's got his attention.

  1056. He gives him

  1057. his first task.

  1058. Here we go.

  1059. Verse 25.

  1060. 25 and 26.

  1061. That night,

1062. the Lord said to him,

  1063. take your father's bull

  1064. and the second bull,

  1065. seven years old,

  1066. and pull down

  1067. the altar of Baal

  1068. that your father has

  1069. and cut down

  1070. the Asherah

  1071. that is beside it

  1072. and build an altar

1073. to the Lord your God

  1074. on the top

  1075. of the stronghold here

  1076. with stones laid

  1077. in due order.

1078. Then take the second bull

  1079. and offer it

  1080. as a burnt offering

  1081. with the wood

  1082. of the Asherah

1083. that you shall cut down.

  1084. His first assignment

  1085. is to tear down

  1086. the altar of Baal

  1087. and the Asherah

  1088. that his father had

  1089. and replace it

  1090. with an altar

  1091. to God

  1092. and sacrifice.

  1093. So Gideon's dad

  1094. is an interesting character,

  1095. isn't he?

  1096. I think he clearly

  1097. told Gideon about God

  1098. because back

1099. when the angel of the Lord

  1100. first appeared to him,

  1101. he knew,

  1102. where's all these things?

  1103. I've heard these things,

1104. but where is it happening?

1105. So his father had told him,

  1106. but yet,

1107. but yet he has an altar

  1108. of Baal

  1109. and an Asherah.

  1110. He's two-faced.

  1111. He's double-minded.

  1112. I'm guessing he felt

  1113. the cultural pressure

1114. and wanted to fit in,

  1115. wanted to look good

  1116. to those around him.

  1117. After all,

1118. we're in the judges, right?

  1119. And everyone was doing

  1120. what was right

  1121. in their own eyes.

1122. So I want to look good

1123. to as many people as I can.

  1124. Change starts

  1125. in the home.

  1126. It starts with me.

1127. It starts with my family

1128. and then God can use it

  1129. from there.

  1130. So first,

1131. what idols do I have

  1132. in my life?

  1133. What idols are

  1134. in my family's life?

1135. I need to tear them down

  1136. and replace them

1137. with the things of the Lord.

1138. So may I ask you,

1139. what idols are in your life?

1140. What idols are in our lives

1141. that we can get rid of

  1142. in my family?

  1143. Look around your house.

  1144. What are some things

  1145. that are idols?

  1146. Look at your calendar.

1147. Look at your budget spreadsheet

  1148. if you're as geeky

1149. as I am about that kind of thing.

1150. You can tell a lot

  1151. about yourself.

  1152. There's sayings about that.

1153. You can tell a lot

  1154. about yourself

  1155. by your money,

  1156. your time,

  1157. what you watch,

  1158. your calendar,

  1159. things like that.

  1160. So evaluate those things.

  1161. What things need

  1162. to be torn down

  1163. and what altars

1164. to God need to be built.

1165. So what does Gideon do?

  1166. Verse 27.

1167. So Gideon took the men

  1168. of his servants,

1169. took 10 men of his servants

1170. and did as the Lord

  1171. had told him.

1172. But because he was too afraid

  1173. of his family

1174. and the men of the town

1175. to do it by day,

1176. he did it by night.

  1177. So he obeyed,

  1178. kind of.

1179. But he took a step

  1180. of faith.

1181. God told him to do it.

1182. He took 10 people with him.

1183. God told him to do it.

  1184. He didn't want everybody

  1185. to know,

1186. so he did it at night.

1187. But he took a step.

  1188. Are we willing

  1189. to take those steps?

  1190. Like Nicodemus

1191. came to Jesus at night.

  1192. So many other examples.

  1193. People afraid

  1194. but doing what's right.

  1195. Trust in the Lord

  1196. and do good.

1197. What is a small step

  1198. I can take?

1199. What is a small step

  1200. you can take?

  1201. And maybe,

1202. how can I do it boldly?

  1203. Trusting in the Lord.

  1204. But there are consequences.

1205. It doesn't always go well.

1206. He was afraid of his family.

  1207. And we'll see,

  1208. rightfully so.

  1209. Verse 28.

  1210. And when the men

  1211. of the town

1212. rose early in the morning,

  1213. behold,

  1214. the altar of Baal

  1215. was broken down

  1216. and the Asherah

1217. beside it was cut down

  1218. and the second bull

1219. was offered on the altar

  1220. that had been built.

1221. And they said to one another,

1222. who has done this thing?

1223. And after they had searched

  1224. and inquired,

  1225. they said,

  1226. Gideon,

  1227. the son of Joash

  1228. has done this thing.

  1229. Then the men

  1230. of the town

  1231. said to Joash,

  1232. bring out your son

  1233. that he may die.

  1234. For he has broken

1235. down the altar of Baal

  1236. and cut down

  1237. the Asherah beside it.

  1238. He took a step

  1239. for God

  1240. and now his life

  1241. is being threatened.

  1242. Sometimes things

  1243. don't go as planned.

  1244. God's plans

  1245. are not always ours

  1246. and sometimes things

  1247. get worse

  1248. before they get better.

  1249. But am I willing

  1250. to follow

  1251. and trust God

  1252. anyway?

  1253. The cultural response,

  1254. kill him,

  1255. cancel him,

  1256. whatever.

  1257. It's pretty drastic.

  1258. Most of us

  1259. will not face death

  1260. by standing up

  1261. for God.

  1262. Maybe we just

  1263. get looked at funny.

  1264. Maybe our families

  1265. won't like to change.

  1266. Again, after all,

  1267. he was afraid

  1268. of the family.

  1269. What happened?

  1270. Dad, why do you

  1271. want to meet together

1272. and do family Bible time

  1273. at night?

1274. Why are you making me

1275. read the Bible every day?

  1276. Why are we serving?

  1277. I'd rather go play.

  1278. Why is this happening?

1279. Our family might not like it.

1280. We might be made fun of.

  1281. Maybe more serious consequences,

  1282. losing our job.

  1283. I'm pretty sure

  1284. at this point

  1285. we're not going

  1286. to face death.

  1287. The day may come.

1288. Are we ready for that?

  1289. God is good

  1290. and he's worth

  1291. consequences for.

  1292. Am I willing

  1293. to stand for God

  1294. even if people

  1295. don't like it?

  1296. Luke 9, 23-26

  1297. is a good passage

  1298. to read through

  1299. as a reminder.

  1300. Jesus said,

  1301. take up your cross

  1302. and follow me.

  1303. Deny yourself

  1304. and if you

  1305. don't be ashamed

  1306. of God before men.

  1307. So Gideon

1308. took this step of faith

  1309. and what happened?

1310. The people didn't like it

1311. but look at verse 31.

  1312. But Joash said

  1313. to all who stood

  1314. against him,

  1315. that's Gideon's dad,

  1316. Joash said

  1317. to all who stood

  1318. against him,

  1319. will you contend

  1320. for Baal

1321. or will you save him?

  1322. Whoever contends

  1323. for him

  1324. shall be put

  1325. to death by morning.

  1326. If he's a god,

  1327. let him contend

  1328. for himself

  1329. because his altar

  1330. has been broken down.

  1331. Gideon took

  1332. a step of faith

  1333. secretly

  1334. but his dad

  1335. was impacted.

  1336. His father

  1337. got his act together.

  1338. He said,

  1339. okay,

  1340. yeah,

  1341. that's wrong.

  1342. I shouldn't have done that.

  1343. Let me stand up

  1344. for God now.

  1345. Our steps of faith

  1346. will have impact

  1347. for others.

  1348. As for me

  1349. and my house,

1350. we will serve the Lord.

  1351. 1 Timothy 4.12

1352. This is a good reminder

  1353. that Gideon

1354. took the step of faith

  1355. and his father,

  1356. someone older than him,

  1357. was impacted.

  1358. Do not let people

  1359. look down on you

  1360. because you're young

  1361. but set an example

  1362. for the believers

  1363. in word,

  1364. in,

  1365. I don't have that one

  1366. memorized very well.

  1367. Word,

  1368. spirit,

  1369. faith,

  1370. purity.

  1371. I butchered that one.

  1372. Go look it up

  1373. for yourself and see.

1374. But we can set an example

  1375. for others

1376. and God will use that

1377. in the lives of others

1378. whether they're older than us

  1379. or younger than us.

1380. Are we willing to humble ourselves

1381. and learn from people younger,

  1382. older,

  1383. and work together?

  1384. We'll talk about this

  1385. in a little bit.

  1386. We need all generations.

  1387. We need gray hairs.

  1388. We need young people.

  1389. We need everybody

  1390. together as the body.

  1391. So again,

1392. this was a good response.

  1393. If Baal's God,

1394. let him deal with it.

  1395. Kind of like Elijah.

  1396. Elijah says,

  1397. you know,

1398. how long will you limp

  1399. between two opinions?

  1400. If Baal's God,

  1401. follow him,

1402. but if the Lord is God,

  1403. follow him.

1404. Do you and I believe

1405. that the Lord is God?

1406. It's easy in this setting

  1407. to say yes.

  1408. Tomorrow,

1409. when we go to work,

1410. when we go to play,

1411. when we go to whatever,

  1412. go to our homes,

1413. do we still believe that

1414. and is it still true

  1415. and are we willing

  1416. to stand up

  1417. and say that

1418. even when it's not popular

1419. and may come with consequences?

  1420. Are we willing

  1421. to follow him

  1422. even if it's costly?

  1423. So what happened?

  1424. Verse 32,

  1425. therefore on that day,

  1426. Gideon was called

  1427. Jerob Baal.

  1428. That is to say,

1429. let Baal contend against him

  1430. because he broke down

  1431. his altar.

  1432. He didn't die.

  1433. Again,

  1434. he saw God,

  1435. he didn't die.

  1436. He was threatened,

  1437. he didn't die.

  1438. He was branded though.

1439. He was called derogatory names

  1440. from then on.

  1441. It's a small price to pay.

1442. Don't worry about idle threats.

  1443. Proverbs 26.2

  1444. says like a sparrow

  1445. by flitting

  1446. or a swallow

  1447. and it's flying

  1448. so a curse unfounded

1449. will not come to rest.

1450. I love that verse by the way.

  1451. I love barn swallows.

  1452. They're my favorite birds.

1453. There's some out in the backyard.

  1454. They just,

  1455. they always are flying.

1456. You never see them land

  1457. and just like that,

  1458. these kind of curses,

1459. you're going to be called

  1460. Jerob Baal.

  1461. May Baal get you.

  1462. It'll never land.

1463. I don't have to worry about it.

1464. I can trust my God

1465. and he will take care of me.

  1466. So we move into

  1467. Gideon's next assignment.

  1468. That's the next blank

  1469. and I'm sorry,

  1470. that blank is small.

  1471. Gideon's next assignment.

  1472. Write that in there

  1473. as best you can

1474. and then Gideon is ready.

  1475. Okay?

  1476. Gideon's next assignment

  1477. and Gideon is ready.

  1478. Let's see what happens.

  1479. Verse 33.

  1480. Now all the Midianites

  1481. and the Amalekites

1482. and the people of the east

  1483. came together

1484. and they crossed the Jordan

  1485. and encamped

1486. in the valley of Jezreel.

1487. He just faced his family.

1488. He just faced his tribe

  1489. and now the enemy

  1490. is amassing.

  1491. He handled,

1492. he weathered the last storm

1493. now comes the next one.

  1494. The bad guys

  1495. are joining together

  1496. and they're hanging out

1497. in the valley of Jezreel.

  1498. We've got a standoff going.

  1499. Verses 34 and 35.

1500. But the Spirit of the Lord

  1501. clothed Gideon

1502. and he sounded the trumpet

  1503. and the Abiezrites

  1504. were called out

  1505. to follow him

  1506. and he sent messengers

  1507. throughout all Manasseh

  1508. and they too

  1509. were called out

  1510. to follow him

  1511. and he sent messengers

  1512. to Asher, Zebulun

  1513. and Naphtali

  1514. and they went up

  1515. to meet him.

  1516. Woohoo!

1517. We're getting the band together.

1518. We're going to go attack.

  1519. This is good.

1520. The Spirit of the Lord.

1521. Notice that it was God

  1522. working in him.

1523. We need to be open

  1524. to God working

  1525. and seeking in him.

  1526. Seeking out his direction,

  1527. his will,

  1528. being willing to submit

  1529. to that.

  1530. God was with him.

1531. He called out his family.

  1532. He called out,

1533. and maybe that was an impact.

  1534. His dad stood up.

  1535. His family joined him

  1536. in this battle.

1537. As we take one small step

  1538. of faith,

1539. there can be ripple effects.

  1540. God can use that

  1541. in bigger ways.

1542. And then he called out

  1543. three more tribes.

1544. He's ready for the big time.

  1545. But then comes

  1546. verses 36 to 40,

  1547. which Gideon is ready

  1548. was the second part

  1549. of point four.

  1550. Point five is,

  1551. or is he?

  1552. Or is he?

  1553. We see doubts

  1554. surface again.

  1555. Verses 36 and 37

  1556. says this,

1557. Then Gideon said to God,

1558. If you will save Israel

  1559. by my hand,

  1560. as you have said,

  1561. behold,

  1562. I'm laying a fleece of wool

  1563. on the threshing floor.

  1564. If there's dew

  1565. on the fleece alone

1566. and it's dry on the ground,

  1567. then I shall know

1568. that you will save Israel

  1569. by my hand,

  1570. as you've said.

  1571. Gideon says,

  1572. Whoa, whoa, whoa,

  1573. slow down a second.

  1574. This is great,

  1575. but you know,

  1576. I'm having doubts.

  1577. I'm not sure anymore.

  1578. God, are you sure?

  1579. He's asking for a sign

  1580. and trusting God.

  1581. Often,

  1582. our biggest successes

  1583. are followed

  1584. by our greatest challenges

  1585. and failures.

  1586. 1 Corinthians 10, 12

  1587. says,

  1588. Beware you who think

  1589. you're strong,

  1590. lest you fall.

  1591. Be ready.

  1592. Beware when you think

  1593. you're strong.

  1594. Don't continue

  1595. in your own strength

  1596. what God has begun

  1597. doing in you.

1598. Let him complete his work

  1599. even when it's hard.

  1600. Philippians 1, 6.

  1601. He who began

1602. a good work in you

  1603. will be faithful

  1604. to complete it.

  1605. Am I willing

  1606. to trust him?

  1607. When God starts working,

  1608. am I willing

  1609. to keep going

  1610. in his strength

  1611. and not my own?

  1612. Use the talents,

  1613. gifts,

1614. abilities that he's given me

  1615. but not do things

  1616. in my own strength.

  1617. Verse 38.

1618. So he does the fleece thing.

1619. I'm not going to go

  1620. too deep into this

  1621. and make things up.

  1622. Let the main things

  1623. be the plain things

  1624. and the plain things

  1625. be the main things.

  1626. What happens here

  1627. in verse 38?

  1628. And it was so.

  1629. When he rose early

  1630. the next morning

  1631. and squeezed the fleece,

  1632. he wrung enough dew

  1633. from the fleece

1634. to fill a bowl of water.

  1635. Then,

  1636. so God answered.

  1637. God is gracious.

  1638. Sometimes he answers

  1639. with the fleece.

  1640. Sometimes he doesn't.

1641. Kind of like with Job.

1642. So what does Gideon do?

  1643. Then Gideon,

  1644. verse 39.

1645. Then Gideon said to God,

  1646. let not your anger

  1647. burn against me.

1648. Let me speak just one more time.

  1649. Please let me test

  1650. just once more

  1651. with the fleece.

1652. Please let it be dry

  1653. on the fleece only

1654. and on all the ground

  1655. let there be dew.

  1656. Again,

  1657. I'm not going to

  1658. over-spiritualize this

  1659. or make things up.

1660. You know what I think

  1661. happened here?

  1662. Gideon's first test,

1663. he was off a little bit, right?

  1664. What happens

  1665. if you put,

  1666. if I put a t-shirt

  1667. on my back porch

  1668. at night

  1669. and there's dew

1670. and then the sun comes out,

  1671. the ground,

1672. the deck is going to be dry

  1673. but the t-shirt's

1674. still going to be wet, right?

  1675. Oops.

  1676. Hey God,

  1677. I got that backwards.

1678. Can we try it again?

  1679. I think that's all

  1680. that happened here, right?

  1681. Whatever.

  1682. I'll let Pastor Andrew

1683. correct me if I'm wrong

1684. or he can go deeper

  1685. if he wants

  1686. but then he gives

  1687. that clear sign.

  1688. Okay,

  1689. if I put the t-shirt out

  1690. and now

  1691. if the t-shirt's dry

  1692. but they're still due

  1693. then God did something

  1694. because that's what,

  1695. you know,

  1696. that's not what happens

  1697. in the normal

  1698. natural world.

  1699. So he asked

1700. for another go at it

  1701. and God is gracious

  1702. enough to answer.

  1703. Look at verse 40.

1704. And God did so that night

  1705. and it was dry

  1706. on the fleece only

1707. and on all the ground

  1708. was due.

  1709. Sometimes God is gracious

1710. and gives us those answers.

1711. He gives us that assurance

  1712. that we're following him

  1713. and sometimes he doesn't.

1714. Am I willing to follow him

  1715. and walk by faith

1716. even if I don't feel like it,

  1717. even if my circumstances

  1718. don't change?

1719. Am I willing to follow him?

  1720. So now

  1721. Gideon is continuing

  1722. to be humbled.

  1723. He's amassing an army

  1724. and

  1725. in two weeks

  1726. we'll see what happens

  1727. in chapter 7.

  1728. But for now,

  1729. so what?

  1730. What's the takeaway?

1731. I go home this afternoon.

1732. I go to work tomorrow.

1733. I got all these things

1734. going on in my life.

  1735. What difference

  1736. does this make?

  1737. I've heard it said

  1738. God doesn't call

  1739. the qualified

  1740. but he qualifies

  1741. the called.

  1742. You might not feel

  1743. like you can do

1744. what God has called you to do.

1745. And what God calls us

  1746. to do is hard

  1747. because our sinful hearts

  1748. fight against it,

  1749. whatever it is.

1750. But God will work in us,

  1751. again,

1752. to will and to do

  1753. of his good pleasure.

1754. We'll look at that verse

1755. here in a little bit.

1756. But I want to encourage

  1757. and challenge us.

  1758. Are we taking steps

  1759. of faith?

1760. What is God calling you

  1761. to do?

  1762. To grow spiritually?

  1763. Maybe to trust Christ

  1764. as Savior?

  1765. to lead your family?

  1766. To invest and love

  1767. your wife

1768. as Christ loved the church?

1769. To invest in your children

  1770. even when it's hard?

  1771. To witness to neighbors,

  1772. to coworkers?

  1773. Maybe get involved

  1774. in the church?

  1775. May I just say,

1776. as my wife and I

  1777. oversee the nursery ministry,

  1778. we can always use

  1779. nursery helpers,

  1780. isn't this a blessing

  1781. up here?

  1782. The people who play?

1783. Do you play an instrument?

  1784. Come and join us.

  1785. One of the principles

1786. of our music ministry here

  1787. that Pastor John

  1788. introduced in 2012

  1789. when he started

  1790. was more is better.

  1791. Maybe God is challenging

  1792. you to say,

1793. hey, I play the whatever.

1794. Can I do that too?

  1795. Serve with,

  1796. there's children's ministries.

1797. I want to challenge you,

  1798. wherever you're at,

  1799. young people,

  1800. serve.

  1801. Get involved.

  1802. There's nursery opportunities,

  1803. children's ministry opportunities.

  1804. Get involved and serve.

1805. You guys do a good job

  1806. of this overall.

1807. Maybe God is calling you

  1808. to step up

  1809. and do different things.

1810. For those who are older,

  1811. it is not time

  1812. to make way

  1813. for the next generation.

  1814. It is time

  1815. to serve

  1816. with the next generation.

  1817. May I encourage you

  1818. and challenge you,

  1819. don't check out.

  1820. There's no retirement

1821. from the family of God.

1822. We need the gray hairs

1823. of which I'm now being.

1824. We need the gray hairs

  1825. and the green horns.

1826. We need to work together

  1827. to grow and sharpen

  1828. and encourage each other.

  1829. May this church grow

  1830. and serve one another.

  1831. So what is God

  1832. calling you to do?

  1833. Again,

  1834. maybe it's something

  1835. in the church.

  1836. Maybe it's missions.

  1837. Who knows?

  1838. Maybe it's something else.

  1839. But are you willing

  1840. to serve

  1841. and get involved?

  1842. Like Gideon,

  1843. there's nothing special

  1844. about Gideon.

  1845. He was broken.

  1846. He was small.

  1847. But God was going

  1848. to work in him.

  1849. Two passages

  1850. to look at

  1851. and then we'll close

  1852. in prayer.

  1853. Philippians 2,

  1854. 12 and 13.

  1855. I've quoted this one

  1856. a couple times,

1857. but you can see it

  1858. for yourself.

  1859. Philippians 2,

    Philippians 2:12

  1860. verses 12 and 13

  1861. says this,

  1862. Therefore,

  1863. my beloved,

  1864. as you have always

  1865. obeyed,

  1866. so now,

1867. not only as in my presence,

1868. but much more in my absence,

1869. work out your own salvation

  1870. with fear and trembling.

  1871. For it is God

  1872. who works in you,

  1873. both to will

  1874. and to work

  1875. for his good pleasure.

  1876. Excuse me.

  1877. God is the one

  1878. who works in us

  1879. to will,

  1880. to be willing to,

  1881. to want to do

1882. what he called us to do

  1883. and then to follow

  1884. through and do it.

  1885. Will we rely

  1886. on his strength

  1887. to do it?

  1888. So if you've never,

  1889. if God's calling you

  1890. to step up

  1891. and do something,

  1892. would you step out

  1893. and do it?

  1894. Trust in the Lord

  1895. and do good,

  1896. whether it's family,

  1897. church,

  1898. whatever it is.

  1899. And for those

  1900. who have been serving

  1901. for a long time,

  1902. thank you.

  1903. We need the faithful,

  1904. people who have been

  1905. serving and doing this

  1906. for years

1907. and continuing to do so

  1908. as an example

  1909. and teaching and training

  1910. the next generation

  1911. and serving with them

  1912. and bringing them up.

  1913. But remember,

  1914. it's not about you.

  1915. And for us,

  1916. let's not,

  1917. let's not trust

  1918. the older people.

  1919. Let's trust the God

1920. that they are pointing us to

  1921. because 1 Corinthians 1, 26

  1922. and following says,

  1923. for consider your calling,

  1924. brothers.

1925. Not many of you were wise

  1926. according to worldly standards.

  1927. Not many were powerful.

1928. Not many were of noble birth.

  1929. But God chose

1930. what is foolish in the world

  1931. to shame the wise.

  1932. God chose

1933. what is weak in the world

  1934. to shame the strong.

  1935. God chose

  1936. what is low

1937. and despised in the world.

1938. Even things that are not

  1939. to bring to nothing

  1940. the things that are

  1941. so that

  1942. no human being

  1943. might boast

1944. in the presence of God.

  1945. It's all about God

  1946. and His glory.

  1947. It starts with me

  1948. and my life,

  1949. me and my family,

  1950. me and my church

1951. and we can impact the world.

1952. What is God calling you to do?

1953. Will you take that step,

  1954. trust in the Lord

  1955. and do good?

  1956. And may we watch

1957. and see what God does

  1958. for His glory.

  1959. Let's pray.

1960. Thank you God for Gideon.

  1961. Your patience with him.

1962. Thank you that you are

  1963. patient with us.

1964. God, I pray that you would

  1965. work in us today

  1966. as we sit here

  1967. and we're maybe

  1968. riled up

  1969. and we feel

  1970. the call,

  1971. the excitement.

1972. Lord, will you work in us

  1973. to will

  1974. and to do

1975. of what you're calling us to do?

1976. Lord, would you work in us?

  1977. May we have strong,

  1978. godly people

  1979. in this church.

  1980. May we have strong,

  1981. godly families

  1982. in this church.

1983. May we be a strong,

  1984. godly family

  1985. who loves you,

  1986. loves each other

  1987. and shares the gospel

  1988. with the world.

  1989. Go with us

  1990. and use us

  1991. for your glory

  1992. in every place

1993. that you have placed us

  1994. with the real people

  1995. in our lives.

  1996. Help us to invest

  1997. for your glory

  1998. and your kingdom.

  1999. In Jesus' name,

  2000. Amen.

  2001. Thank you.

  2002. You're dismissed.
