  1. As we get started this morning by way of reminder, we are in the book of Judges.

  2. ! And as you hopefully remember, Judges comes after the Lord has delivered the people of Israel

  3. ! from slavery in Egypt and carried them through their rebellion and their wandering

  4. and brought them into the promised land under the leadership of Joshua.

  5. And near the end of Joshua's life, he challenges Israel to choose whom they would serve.

  6. So if you would, begin by looking with me at some of the verses from Joshua chapter 24.

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  7. Just a few excerpts of his final challenge to Israel, starting with verse 14.

  8. Joshua says,

  9. Now therefore, fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness.

  10. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the river and in Egypt and serve the Lord.

  11. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve,

  12. whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the river or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.

  13. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

  14. Then verse 19.

  15. But Joshua said to the people,

  16. You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God.

  17. He's a jealous God.

  18. He will not forgive your transgressions or your sins.

  19. If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods,

  20. then he will turn and do you harm and consume you after having done you good.

  21. And the people said to Joshua,

  22. No, we will serve the Lord.

  23. Verse 23.

  24. And he said,

  25. Then put away the foreign gods that are among you,

  26. and incline your heart to the Lord, the God of Israel.

  27. And the people said to Joshua,

  28. The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey.

  29. Now, as we know at this point in Joshua,

  30. they did not fully obey God's command to drive out the inhabitants of the land or their gods.

  31. And so we hear time and time again the book of Judges reverberates with Joshua's challenge,

  32. Choose this day whom you will serve.

  33. Hopefully you remember that after Joshua's generation died,

  34. another generation arose that did not know the Lord or remember his works.

  35. Now, remember, they still knew about Yahweh, the one true God,

  36. but they're not living in faithful covenant relationship with him.

  37. You remember from chapter 6, even Gideon himself knew the stories.

  38. He says,

  39. Where are all God's wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us?

  40. But they mixed Canaanite beliefs and worship with the worship of Yahweh.

  41. You remember Gideon's own father, Joash, maintained an altar to Baal

  42. and had an Asherah, and the people of the town came there to worship.

  43. So because Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord,

  44. he gave them into the hand of Midian.

  45. And hopefully you remember that it's been seven years

  46. that the Midianites and the Amalekites have swept through the land,

  47. devouring its produce, its livestock, until it says Israel was brought very low.

  48. And this time, when Israel cried out,

  49. God sent a prophet first before sending a judge.

  50. And you probably remember, the prophet made the real problem clear.

  51. It was not Israel's deepest problem that they had enemies outside of them,

  52. but it was their unfaithfulness inside of them,

  53. their disobedience and the corruption of true worship.

  54. Then you remember in Judges chapter 6,

    Judges 6 chapter mention

  55. the angel of the Lord found Gideon.

  56. He was fearful, hiding in a winepress.

  57. And the angel of the Lord calls Gideon a mighty man of valor.

  58. And he sent him first to confront the Baal worship in his own household.

  59. Now Gideon obeyed, but again, you remember,

  60. he does it at night because he's afraid.

  61. But from it all, he gets the nickname, Jeroboam,

  62. which means let Baal contend with him.

  63. And it becomes an ongoing testimony that Baal could not defend himself.

  64. So the spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon,

  65. and God patiently reassures Gideon because of the fleece

  66. and having the opportunity to know this is what God's doing.

  67. And Gideon has gathered an army now on the,

  68. or near Mount Gilboa, overlooking the Herod Valley.

  69. You can see on the back of your listening guide,

  70. there's a map if you'd like to get a clearer picture

  71. of where things are happening today.

  72. But that's where we'll pick up the story in Judges chapter 7 and 8.

    Judges 7 chapter mention

  73. And if you're using one of the Bibles from the seat around you,

  74. and I hope you will follow along in the Bible,

  75. you can find that on page 206.

  76. Now, these chapters contain one of the most positive

  77. and powerful moments in Judges,

  78. followed almost immediately by a critical turn

  79. deeper into Israel's downward spiral.

  80. Now, let's begin near the end.

  81. After the battle has been won.

  82. In Judges 8, verses 22 and 23 read,

    Judges 8:22

  83. Then the men of Israel said to Gideon,

  84. Rule over us, you and your son and your grandson also,

  85. for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.

  86. Gideon said to them,

  87. I will not rule over you,

  88. and my son will not rule over you.

  89. The Lord will rule over you.

  90. Now, that statement is going to give us the theme for this morning's message.

  91. The Lord will rule over you.

  92. And we're going to look at five ways that his rule is revealed.

  93. But to do that, we have to go back in time from this point of the story

  94. to about a week before.

  95. The first thing we're going to see is the Lord rules through our weakness.

  96. The Lord rules through our weakness.

  97. And if you would follow along, starting in Judges chapter 7 with verse 1,

    Judges 7 chapter mention

  98. it reads,

  99. Then Jeroboam, that is Gideon,

  100. and all the people who were with him,

  101. rose early and encamped beside the spring of Herod.

  102. And the camp of Midian was north of them by the hill of Moreh in the valley.

  103. The Lord said to Gideon,

  104. The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand,

  105. lest Israel boast over me, saying,

  106. My own hand has saved me.

  107. Now, therefore, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying,

  108. Whoever is fearful and trembling,

  109. let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.

  110. Then 22,000 of the people returned and 10,000 remained.

  111. So Gideon begins with 32,000 soldiers

  112. against what we will later learn is an army of 135,000.

  113. Israel's already outnumbered more than four to one,

  114. but God says the problem is that Gideon has too many soldiers.

  115. Now, why is that?

  116. I think it's because by nature we're glory thieves.

  117. You see, if there's any plausible way to make ourselves into the hero of the story, we will.

  118. So God deliberately removes every reasonable ground for Israel to say,

  119. My own hand has saved me.

  120. And following the principle laid out in Deuteronomy 20, verse 8,

    Deuteronomy 20:8

  121. The fearful are permitted to go home,

  122. and 22,000 leave.

  123. Now, it's interesting.

  124. This all happens at the spring of Herod.

  125. And in Hebrew,

  126. you could also understand that as the spring of trembling.

  127. And it's a fitting scene that exposes how deeply fear and unbelief had spread through Israel.

  128. You see, they knew the stories of God's mighty acts,

  129. but they had very little confidence that he would keep his promises now.

  130. So, only 10,000 remain.

  131. And yet, the Lord says,

  132. There are still too many.

  133. Continuing with verse 4.

  134. It reads,

  135. And the Lord said to Gideon,

  136. The people are still too many.

  137. Take them down to the water,

  138. and I will test them for you there.

  139. And anyone of whom I say to you,

  140. This one shall go with you,

  141. shall go with you.

  142. And anyone of whom I say to you,

  143. This one shall not go with you,

  144. shall not go.

  145. So he brought the people down to the water.

  146. And the Lord said to Gideon,

  147. Everyone who laps the water with his tongue as a dog laps,

  148. you shall set by himself.

  149. Likewise, everyone who kneels down to drink.

  150. And the number of those who lapped,

  151. putting their hands to their mouths,

  152. was 300 men.

  153. But all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water.

  154. And the Lord said to Gideon,

  155. With the 300 men who lapped,

  156. I will save you,

  157. and give the Midianites into your hand.

  158. Let all the others go,

  159. every man to his home.

  160. So the people took provisions in their hands,

  161. in their trumpets,

  162. and he sent all the rest of Israel,

  163. every man to his tent,

  164. but retained the 300 men.

  165. And the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.

  166. Now, the point of the drinking test

  167. is not that God's identifying his special forces.

  168. Okay?

  169. The text never says that those 300 were more vigilant

  170. or more courageous.

  171. In contrast,

  172. the test reduces the army

  173. until Israel's weakness should be unmistakable.

  174. 300 men against 135,000.

  175. Now, the odds about 450 to 1.

  176. You see, God knows we readily steal his glory.

  177. So he makes Israel too weak

  178. to honestly explain the victory apart from him,

  179. exposing their weakness,

  180. forcing them to depend on him.

  181. Now, let's just take a moment

  182. and ask yourself,

  183. where are you stealing God's glory?

  184. Do you quietly credit your success

  185. to your own hard work

  186. or your wisdom,

  187. your ability,

  188. forgetting that every good and perfect gift

  189. is from above?

  190. Do you look down on those

  191. that you consider less capable

  192. or less disciplined

  193. or less intelligent,

  194. less mature,

  195. less stable?

  196. Also, think about

  197. where are you fighting

  198. against the weakness

  199. that God has allowed in your life?

  200. Do you tell yourself,

  201. if only I had more time,

  202. more money,

  203. more ability,

  204. more strength,

  205. more youth,

  206. more experience,

  207. then I would obey,

  208. I would serve,

  209. I would do this for the Lord.

  210. You see, so often,

  211. we want God to make us

  212. strong enough to obey,

  213. strong enough that we can do it

  214. without depending on him,

  215. but the Lord rules

  216. through our weakness.

  217. Now, honestly,

  218. what he's called you to

  219. may truly be too big for you,

  220. but that's because his plan

  221. was never for you

  222. to do it on your own.

  223. He calls us to walk

  224. in faithful obedience,

  225. step by step,

  226. letting our weakness

  227. become the stage

  228. on which his strength

  229. and his glory are displayed.

  230. Now, the second thing

  231. we want to see

  232. is the Lord rules

  233. mercifully in our fear.

  234. The Lord rules

  235. mercifully in our fear.

  236. And just by way of reminder,

  237. God has been remarkably patient

  238. with Gideon's fear

  239. throughout this story, right?

  240. He finds him hiding

  241. in a wine press.

  242. He speaks peace to Gideon

  243. when Gideon thinks

  244. he's going to die

  245. because he's sending

  246. the angel of the Lord

  247. face to face.

  248. He doesn't reject

  249. or criticize him

  250. for tearing down

  251. the altar of Baal at night.

  252. He patiently reassures him

  253. with the fleece.

  254. Now, the night before the battle,

  255. we're going to see

  256. that same mercy continues.

  257. Continuing with verse 9,

  258. it reads,

  259. That same night,

  260. the Lord said to Gideon,

  261. Arise, go down

  262. against the camp,

  263. for I have given it

  264. into your hand.

  265. But if you are afraid

  266. to go down,

  267. go down to the camp

  268. with Purah, your servant,

  269. and you shall hear

  270. what they say,

  271. and afterward your hands

  272. shall be strengthened

  273. to go down

  274. against the camp.

  275. Then Gideon went down

  276. with Purah, his servant,

  277. to the outposts

  278. of the armed men

  279. who were in the camp.

  280. And the Midianites

  281. and the Amalekites

  282. and all the people

  283. of the east

  284. lay along the valley

  285. like locusts in abundance.

  286. And their camels

  287. were without number

  288. as the sand

  289. that is on the shore,

  290. the seashore in abundance.

  291. When Gideon came,

  292. behold,

  293. a man was telling

  294. a dream to his comrade.

  295. And he said,

  296. Behold,

  297. I dreamed a dream.

  298. And behold,

  299. a cake of barley,

  300. barley tumbled

  301. into the camp of Midian.

  302. And it came to the tent

  303. and struck it

  304. so that it fell.

  305. It turned it upside down

  306. so the tent lay flat.

  307. And his comrade answered,

  308. This is no other

  309. than the sword of Gideon,

  310. the son of Joash,

  311. a man of Israel.

  312. God has given

  313. into his hand

  314. Midian in all the camp.

  315. Now,

  316. God commands Gideon

  317. to arise

  318. and go down

  319. against the Midianites.

  320. Then he adds,

  321. But if you are afraid,

  322. there's an extraordinary

  323. amount of mercy

  324. and gentleness

  325. in those words.

  326. And Gideon is afraid.

  327. Of course he is.

  328. He's about to lead

  329. 300 men

  330. against 135,000.

  331. And we'll learn later

  332. that his own brothers

  333. had been killed

  334. in conflict

  335. with the Midianites.

  336. Yes, Gideon

  337. had received

  338. direct revelation

  339. and repeated signs,

  340. but we should be slow

  341. to criticize

  342. the fear of a man

  343. who's actually

  344. stepping forward

  345. in obedience.

  346. Our merciful Lord

  347. does not mock

  348. or chastise him.

  349. He gives Gideon

  350. one more encouragement.

  351. Go down with Purah

  352. and listen.

  353. Now,

  354. to feel the strangeness

  355. of what Gideon overhears,

  356. let me let you

  357. imagine it this way.

  358. Okay?

  359. Soldier One says,

  360. I had a dream.

  361. A day-old bagel

  362. rolled out of

  363. a kindergartner's lunchbox

  364. towards the Pentagon.

  365. It bounced over the curb,

  366. hit the building,

  367. and the whole Pentagon

  368. collapsed.

  369. And Soldier Two answers,

  370. Well, that can only

  371. mean one thing.

  372. God's given the Pentagon

  373. and all its strength

  374. into the hand

  375. of Kevin Jones,

  376. a kindergartner

  377. living in Pentagon City.

  378. Right?

  379. That's roughly

  380. how absurd

  381. the dream

  382. and its interpretation

  383. must have sounded.

  384. A loaf of barley bread,

  385. which is the food

  386. of the poor,

  387. topples the tent

  388. of mighty Midian,

  389. and the Midianite soldier

  390. immediately knows

  391. it's Gideon's victory.

  392. But think

  393. of all the sovereign mercy

  394. that's packed

  395. into that moment.

  396. Right?

  397. It's obvious

  398. that that fear

  399. was already spreading

  400. through the camp

  401. of the Midianites.

  402. God directs Gideon

  403. and Pura

  404. to exactly

  405. the right place

  406. at the right time

  407. to hear this dream.

  408. And then Gideon's fears

  409. are comforted

  410. by hearing the fears

  411. of another soldier.

  412. Then verse 15 happens.

  413. It says,

  414. As soon as Gideon

  415. heard the telling

  416. of the dream

  417. and its interpretation,

  418. he worshipped.

  419. And he returned

  420. to the camp of Israel

  421. and said,

  422. Arise,

  423. for the Lord

  424. has given the host

  425. of Midian

  426. into your hand.

  427. Now,

  428. the Lord's merciful rule

  429. in Gideon's fear

  430. produces two right results.

  431. The first is worship.

  432. Gideon bows

  433. before Yahweh.

  434. And remarkably,

  435. this is the only place

  436. in Judges

  437. where this verb

  438. describes

  439. an Israelite

  440. bowing down

  441. before the Lord.

  442. Elsewhere,

  443. it's all used

  444. to describe

  445. the Israelites

  446. bowing down

  447. before false gods.

  448. But the second thing

  449. that the Lord's

  450. merciful care produces

  451. is a faith

  452. that obeys.

  453. Right?

  454. Gideon returns

  455. to camp,

  456. announces,

  457. The Lord has given

  458. it into our hands

  459. and calls the men

  460. to battle.

  461. We see that

  462. Gideon's worship

  463. fuels his obedience.

  464. And Gideon's obedience

  465. reflects the sincerity

  466. of his worship.

  467. You know,

  468. God's people

  469. do not have to be fearless.

  470. But we do have to obey.

  471. So,

  472. when fear rises

  473. and it will,

  474. right,

  475. remember the Lord's patience,

  476. the Lord's mercy.

  477. Bring your fear

  478. honestly to him.

  479. Receive strength

  480. through his word,

  481. through his acts

  482. of providence.

  483. And then,

  484. come and bow

  485. and worship

  486. before him

  487. and let that worship

  488. fuel the next step

  489. of obedience.

  490. The third thing

  491. to see,

  492. the Lord rules

  493. over our enemies.

  494. The Lord rules

  495. over our enemies.

  496. Starting in

  497. verse 16,

  498. And Gideon divided

  499. the 300 men

  500. into three companies

  501. and put trumpets

  502. into the hands

  503. of all of them

  504. and empty jars

  505. with torches

  506. inside the jars.

  507. And he said to them,

  508. Look at me

  509. and do likewise.

  510. When I come

  511. to the outskirts

  512. of the camp,

  513. do as I do.

  514. When I blow

  515. the trumpet,

  516. I and all

  517. who are with me,

  518. then blow the trumpets

  519. also on every side

  520. of all the camp

  521. and shout,

  522. For the Lord

  523. and for Gideon!

  524. So Gideon

  525. and the 100 men

  526. who were with him

  527. came to the outskirts

  528. of the camp

  529. at the beginning

  530. of the middle watch.

  531. When they had just

  532. set the watch

  533. and they blew the trumpets

  534. and smashed the jars

  535. that were in their hands,

  536. then the three companies

  537. blew the trumpets

  538. and broke the jars.

  539. They held in their

  540. left hands

  541. the torches

  542. and in their right hands

  543. the trumpets

  544. to blow

  545. and they cried out,

  546. A sword for the Lord

  547. and for Gideon!

  548. Now we're not told

  549. whether God gave Gideon

  550. the details

  551. for this battle plan

  552. or not,

  553. but we do know

  554. that the men

  555. are obedient.

  556. They go down

  557. to fight against the camp

  558. and it's worth noting

  559. the irony

  560. of their battle cry,

  561. A sword for the Lord

  562. and for Gideon

  563. because at that moment

  564. they don't have

  565. a free hand

  566. for a sword.

  567. They're holding a torch

  568. and they're holding

  569. a trumpet.

  570. But look what happens

  571. in verse 21.

  572. Every man stood

  573. in his place

  574. around the camp

  575. and all the army ran.

  576. They cried out

  577. and fled.

  578. When they blew

  579. the 300 trumpets

  580. the Lord set

  581. every man's sword

  582. against his comrade

  583. and against all the army.

  584. Now notice verse 21.

  585. It's astonishing.

  586. Every man stood

  587. in his place

  588. around the camp

  589. and all the army ran.

  590. Now picture it with me,

  591. okay?

  592. 300 Israelites

  593. surround a camp

  594. of roughly 135,000.

  595. Again,

  596. one Israelite soldier

  597. for 450 Midianite soldiers.

  598. At midnight,

  599. the darkness explodes

  600. with shattering pottery,

  601. blazing torches,

  602. trumpet blasts,

  603. a war cry

  604. from every direction.

  605. The Midianite soldiers

  606. pour from their tents

  607. with swords in hand.

  608. They're unable

  609. to clearly understand

  610. what's going on

  611. or what's the size

  612. of the attacking force

  613. and panic begins

  614. to take over.

  615. They just begin striking

  616. the men nearest them.

  617. The camp fills

  618. with shouting

  619. and with running

  620. and clashing steel

  621. and blood and terror

  622. and yet,

  623. the Israelites

  624. stand in their place.

  625. They don't charge

  626. into the camp.

  627. Matter of fact,

  628. they can't even

  629. draw their swords.

  630. While everyone

  631. inside the camp

  632. moves in terror,

  633. God's people

  634. stand their ground

  635. in faith.

  636. Midian has weapons

  637. but no clarity.

  638. Israel has no sword

  639. in hand

  640. but the promise

  641. of God.

  642. And the Lord

  643. set every man's sword

  644. against his comrade.

  645. You see,

  646. Israel's task

  647. was not to make

  648. the victory happen.

  649. They were to obey,

  650. to hold their place,

  651. to watch the Lord

  652. do what only

  653. he could do.

  654. So the survivors flee.

  655. Other tribes

  656. join in the pursuit.

  657. Ephraim captures

  658. Oreb and Zeb

  659. and the victory

  660. that God promised

  661. becomes a miraculous

  662. reality.

  663. You see,

  664. we also have enemies,

  665. don't we?

  666. Ephesians 6.12

  667. reminds us

  668. that our struggle

  669. is not ultimately

  670. against flesh and blood

  671. but against spiritual

  672. forces of evil.

  673. 1 Peter 5.8

  674. warns us

  675. that our adversary,

  676. the devil,

  677. prowls around

  678. like a roaring lion

  679. seeking someone

  680. to devour.

  681. Now maybe this morning

  682. your spiritual enemies

  683. seem as innumerable

  684. and insurmountable

  685. as those of Midian.

  686. Perhaps you've fought

  687. the same temptation

  688. so long

  689. that you feel like

  690. you're just hiding

  691. in a spiritual winepress

  692. trying to survive.

  693. Let me call you

  694. to hear again

  695. the Lord's words

  696. to Gideon.

  697. The Lord

  698. is with you.

  699. Now,

  700. when the excuses

  701. rise,

  702. and they will,

  703. you're too weak,

  704. you're too afraid,

  705. you're too outnumbered,

  706. you've failed

  707. too many times.

  708. Remember the Lord's words.

  709. I will be with you.

  710. Colossians 2.15

  711. says that

  712. through Christ

  713. God has disarmed

  714. the rulers

  715. and authorities

  716. and put them

  717. to open shame

  718. by triumphing

  719. over them

  720. in Him.

  721. Amen.

  722. So do not

  723. give up the fight.

  724. Stand your ground.

  725. The decisive victory

  726. has already been won

  727. in Christ.

  728. Our greatest danger,

  729. though,

  730. so often

  731. is not

  732. from the enemies

  733. outside us.

  734. And as we move

  735. into Judges 8,

  736. it's going to turn

  737. our attention

  738. to the enemies

  739. within.

  740. The fourth thing

  741. we want to see,

  742. the Lord rules

  743. by exposing

  744. the idols

  745. of the heart.

  746. The Lord rules

  747. by exposing

  748. the idols

  749. of the heart.

  750. Now,

  751. the anonymous

  752. prophet's message

  753. at the beginning

  754. of Judges 6

  755. really could provide

  756. the theological

  757. framework

  758. for all

  759. of Gideon's story.

  760. Yahweh remains

  761. unwaveringly

  762. faithful to save

  763. and Israel

  764. persistently

  765. refuses to

  766. to hear

  767. and to fear

  768. and to remember

  769. and to worship

  770. him rightly.

  771. So in some ways,

  772. the Lord really

  773. has been revealing

  774. the idols

  775. of the heart

  776. throughout the entire

  777. story of Gideon.

  778. But chapter 8

  779. brings several

  780. of those idols

  781. into especially

  782. sharp focus.

  783. The first is

  784. the idol

  785. of recognition.

  786. The idol

  787. of recognition.

  788. Follow along

  789. as I read

  790. in chapter 8

  791. starting with

  792. verse 1.

  793. Then the men

  794. of Ephraim

  795. said to him,

  796. What is this

  797. you have done

  798. to us?

  799. Not to call us

  800. when you went

  801. to fight

  802. against Midian?

  803. And they accused

  804. him fiercely.

  805. And Gideon

  806. said to them,

  807. What have I done

  808. now in comparison

  809. with you?

  810. Is not the gleaning

  811. of the grapes

  812. of Ephraim

  813. better than the

  814. grape harvest

  815. of Abiezar?

  816. God has given

  817. into your hands

  818. the princes

  819. of Midian,

  820. Oreb and Zeb.

  821. What have I

  822. been able to do

  823. in comparison

  824. with you?

  825. Then their anger

  826. against him

  827. subsided when

  828. he said this.

  829. So the tribe

  830. of Ephraim

  831. takes personal

  832. offense that Gideon

  833. began the battle

  834. without them.

  835. But the deeper

  836. issue is a longing

  837. for recognition.

  838. Now remember,

  839. the tribe of Ephraim

  840. was not originally

  841. summoned by the

  842. Spirit of the Lord

  843. when he clothed

  844. Gideon and called

  845. out the tribes.

  846. And it was only

  847. later that they

  848. were called to

  849. join in the pursuit.

  850. And although they

  851. do capture

  852. Oreb and Zeb,

  853. they're still

  854. complaining fiercely

  855. that Gideon

  856. had not included

  857. them sooner.

  858. So Gideon

  859. answers wisely

  860. and calms

  861. the conflict,

  862. but he does

  863. not clearly

  864. redirect their

  865. hearts to the

  866. Lord's glory.

  867. We see Ephraim

  868. placated more

  869. than corrected.

  870. Gideon actually

  871. assures them

  872. they had indeed

  873. received significant

  874. honor and

  875. recognition.

  876. And I think

  877. as a result,

  878. we'll see that

  879. same craving

  880. for recognition

  881. reemerge in

  882. Ephraim in

  883. Judges chapter

    Judges 12 chapter mention

  884. 12.

  885. You see,

  886. God's just

  887. miraculously

  888. delivered Israel,

  889. yet Ephraim's

  890. preoccupied with

  891. their own

  892. recognition.

  893. How often do

  894. we see that

  895. same idol

  896. at work in

  897. our own

  898. lives?

  899. Right?

  900. It tells us

  901. we deserve

  902. to be noticed,

  903. to be included,

  904. to be appreciated,

  905. to be valued.

  906. You can often

  907. detect it by

  908. how easily

  909. you're hurt

  910. when you feel

  911. like you've

  912. been overlooked

  913. in some way.

  914. The idol of

  915. recognition

  916. steals our

  917. joy.

  918. It makes it

  919. difficult for us

  920. to thank God

  921. for what he

  922. does apart

  923. from our

  924. involvement.

  925. Or to

  926. worship when

  927. he uses

  928. someone else

  929. to do

  930. something.

  931. Or simply

  932. just to

  933. rejoice with

  934. those who

  935. rejoice.

  936. You see,

  937. instead of

  938. asking,

  939. how has God

  940. been glorified,

  941. the idol of

  942. recognition

  943. leads us to

  944. ask,

  945. did anyone

  946. notice me?

  947. The second

  948. idol is the

  949. idol of

  950. security.

  951. The idol

  952. of security.

  953. Continuing

  954. with verse

  955. four.

  956. It says,

  957. And Gideon

  958. came to

  959. the Jordan

  960. and crossed

  961. over.

  962. He and the

  963. three hundred

  964. men who

  965. were with

  966. him,

  967. exhausted,

  968. yet pursuing.

  969. So he

  970. said to

  971. the men

  972. of Succoth,

  973. Please give

  974. loaves of

  975. bread to

  976. the people

  977. who follow

  978. me,

  979. for they

  980. are exhausted

  981. and I'm

  982. pursuing

  983. after Ziba

  984. and Zalmunna,

  985. the kings

  986. of Midian.

  987. And the

  988. officials of

  989. Succoth

  990. said,

  991. Are the

  992. hands of

  993. Ziba

  994. and Zalmunna

  995. already in

  996. your hand?

  997. That we

  998. should give

  999. bread to

  1000. your army?

  1001. So Gideon

  1002. said,

  1003. Well then,

  1004. when the

  1005. Lord has

  1006. given

  1007. Ziba and

  1008. Zalmunna

  1009. into my

  1010. hand,

  1011. I will

  1012. flail your

  1013. flesh with

  1014. the thorns

  1015. of the

  1016. wilderness

  1017. and with

  1018. briars.

  1019. And from

  1020. there,

  1021. he went up

  1022. to Penuel

  1023. and spoke

  1024. to them

  1025. in the

  1026. same way.

  1027. And the

  1028. men of

  1029. Penuel

  1030. answered

  1031. him as

  1032. the men

  1033. of Succoth

  1034. had answered.

  1035. And he

  1036. said to

  1037. the men

  1038. of Penuel,

  1039. When I

  1040. come again

  1041. in peace,

  1042. I will

  1043. break down

  1044. this tower.

  1045. Now,

  1046. the fears

  1047. of the

  1048. people of

  1049. Succoth

  1050. and Penuel

  1051. are really

  1052. after seven

  1053. years of

  1054. devastation,

  1055. bread is

  1056. precious.

  1057. And if you

  1058. look at your

  1059. map,

  1060. you'll see

  1061. they're a lot

  1062. closer to

  1063. Midian.

  1064. They've already

  1065. understood what

  1066. it's like to

  1067. face the wrath

  1068. and the

  1069. retribution of

  1070. Midian.

  1071. But it's

  1072. real.

  1073. And let's

  1074. just be honest,

  1075. Gideon is

  1076. in some ways

  1077. ridiculously

  1078. asking them

  1079. to support

  1080. 300 exhausted

  1081. men who

  1082. are pursuing

  1083. an army at

  1084. this point of

  1085. at least

  1086. 15,000.

  1087. So the

  1088. fear is

  1089. understandable,

  1090. but it

  1091. becomes

  1092. idolatrous

  1093. when security

  1094. becomes more

  1095. important than

  1096. faithfulness.

  1097. You see,

  1098. the reasoning

  1099. is essentially

  1100. our judgment

  1101. about what

  1102. will keep

  1103. us safe

  1104. is more

  1105. trustworthy

  1106. than what

  1107. God has

  1108. said or

  1109. what God

  1110. is visibly

  1111. doing.

  1112. So fear

  1113. drives them

  1114. to self-protection.

  1115. It keeps

  1116. them from

  1117. trusting God's

  1118. provision,

  1119. his protection.

  1120. It causes

  1121. them to

  1122. actually stand

  1123. aside from

  1124. the Lord's

  1125. work.

  1126. In addition

  1127. to that,

  1128. they speak

  1129. harshly to

  1130. their own

  1131. faithful

  1132. brothers.

  1133. Now the

  1134. same idol

  1135. grows in

  1136. us when

  1137. fear convinces

  1138. us that

  1139. preserving

  1140. ourselves is

  1141. more important

  1142. than trusting

  1143. and obeying

  1144. God,

  1145. often assuming

  1146. we can judge

  1147. what is safest

  1148. for us better

  1149. than God

  1150. can.

  1151. And so

  1152. the idol

  1153. of security

  1154. makes us

  1155. clutch and

  1156. cling to

  1157. what we

  1158. have.

  1159. It makes

  1160. us suspicious

  1161. rather than

  1162. faithful and

  1163. it often

  1164. leads us to

  1165. criticize any

  1166. obedience that

  1167. threatens our

  1168. comfort.

  1169. Now,

  1170. biblical wisdom

  1171. is not

  1172. recklessness,

  1173. but neither

  1174. is safety

  1175. our highest

  1176. good.

  1177. The Lord

  1178. should be.

  1179. The second

  1180. idol,

  1181. the third

  1182. idol that

  1183. we can see

  1184. is the

  1185. idol of

  1186. self-importance.

  1187. The idol

  1188. of self-importance.

  1189. Now,

  1190. Gideon

  1191. pursues and

  1192. defeats the

  1193. remaining 15,000

  1194. men.

  1195. He captures

  1196. Ziba and

  1197. Zalmunna and

  1198. returns to

  1199. Succoth with a

  1200. list of its

  1201. 77 officials.

  1202. And for the

  1203. sake of time,

  1204. we're going to

  1205. skip to verse

  1206. 15.

  1207. It says,

  1208. And Gideon

  1209. came to the

  1210. men of

  1211. Succoth and

  1212. he said,

  1213. Behold,

  1214. Ziba and

  1215. Zalmunna,

  1216. about whom you

  1217. taunted me,

  1218. saying,

  1219. Are the hands

  1220. of Ziba and

  1221. Zalmunna

  1222. already in

  1223. your hand,

  1224. that we

  1225. should give

  1226. bread to

  1227. your men

  1228. who are

  1229. exhausted?

  1230. And he

  1231. took the

  1232. elders of

  1233. the city,

  1234. and he

  1235. took thorns

  1236. of the

  1237. wilderness,

  1238. and briars,

  1239. and with

  1240. them taught

  1241. the men

  1242. of Succoth

  1243. a lesson.

  1244. And he

  1245. broke down

  1246. the tower

  1247. of Penuel

  1248. and killed

  1249. the men

  1250. of the city.

  1251. Then he

  1252. said to

  1253. Ziba and

  1254. Zalmunna,

  1255. Where are

  1256. the men

  1257. you killed

  1258. at Tabor?

  1259. They

  1260. answered,

  1261. As you

  1262. are,

  1263. so were

  1264. they.

  1265. Every one

  1266. of them

  1267. resembled

  1268. the son

  1269. of a

  1270. king.

  1271. And Gideon

  1272. said,

  1273. They were

  1274. my brothers,

  1275. the sons

  1276. of my

  1277. mother.

  1278. As the

  1279. Lord lives,

  1280. if you

  1281. had saved

  1282. them alive,

  1283. I would

  1284. not kill

  1285. you.

  1286. So he

  1287. said to

  1288. Jether,

  1289. his firstborn,

  1290. Rise and

  1291. kill them.

  1292. But the

  1293. young man

  1294. did not

  1295. draw his

  1296. sword,

  1297. for he

  1298. was afraid

  1299. because he

  1300. was still

  1301. a young

  1302. man.

  1303. Then

  1304. Ziba and

  1305. Zalmunna

  1306. said,

  1307. Rise

  1308. yourself

  1309. and fall

  1310. upon us,

  1311. for as

  1312. the man

  1313. is,

  1314. so is

  1315. his

  1316. strength.

  1317. And Gideon

  1318. arose and

  1319. killed

  1320. Ziba and

  1321. Zalmunna,

  1322. and he

  1323. took the

  1324. crescent

  1325. ornaments

  1326. that were

  1327. on the

  1328. necks of

  1329. their

  1330. camels.

  1331. Now

  1332. Gideon's

  1333. growing

  1334. sense of

  1335. self-importance

  1336. appears as

  1337. he treats

  1338. failure to

  1339. support his

  1340. leadership as

  1341. a personal

  1342. offense,

  1343. deserving

  1344. punishment,

  1345. in effect

  1346. saying,

  1347. Those who

  1348. will not

  1349. stand with

  1350. me will

  1351. answer to

  1352. me.

  1353. But

  1354. there's a

  1355. painful

  1356. irony to

  1357. observe here.

  1358. Gideon's

  1359. own leadership

  1360. has been

  1361. sustained from

  1362. beginning to

  1363. end by

  1364. extraordinary

  1365. mercy.

  1366. The people

  1367. of these

  1368. cities feared

  1369. many of the

  1370. same things

  1371. Gideon had

  1372. feared.

  1373. Right?

  1374. Midian's

  1375. overwhelming

  1376. strength,

  1377. the cost of

  1378. resistance,

  1379. whether victory

  1380. would really

  1381. come.

  1382. But they

  1383. didn't have

  1384. the same

  1385. benefit of

  1386. direct

  1387. revelation and

  1388. repeated

  1389. reassurance that

  1390. Gideon had

  1391. received.

  1392. So we see

  1393. Gideon, the

  1394. man who

  1395. needed abundant

  1396. mercy and

  1397. patience, now

  1398. shows little of

  1399. either towards

  1400. other fearful

  1401. people.

  1402. Brothers and

  1403. sisters, we

  1404. must remember

  1405. the mercy God

  1406. has shown us.

  1407. And we

  1408. must especially

  1409. remember it when

  1410. dealing with the

  1411. weaknesses of

  1412. others.

  1413. It also

  1414. appears that

  1415. Gideon begins

  1416. to confuse

  1417. being graciously

  1418. chosen by God

  1419. with being

  1420. personally

  1421. important.

  1422. His position

  1423. didn't come

  1424. from superior

  1425. courage or

  1426. faithfulness,

  1427. but from God's

  1428. gracious choice,

  1429. mercy, and

  1430. patience with

  1431. him.

  1432. Yet the

  1433. grace that

  1434. made Gideon

  1435. useful,

  1436. increasingly

  1437. becomes a

  1438. status that he

  1439. expects others

  1440. to recognize

  1441. and support.

  1442. Then we see

  1443. his God-given

  1444. mission becoming

  1445. entangled with

  1446. personal vengeance.

  1447. By verses

  1448. 18-21,

  1449. Gideon

  1450. confirms that

  1451. Zeba and

  1452. Zalmunna

  1453. killed his

  1454. brothers, and

  1455. their execution

  1456. is tied to

  1457. his family

  1458. grievance or

  1459. vindication.

  1460. So little by

  1461. little, God's

  1462. cause and

  1463. Gideon's

  1464. personal cause

  1465. are becoming

  1466. increasingly

  1467. difficult to

  1468. distinguish.

  1469. But the

  1470. idol of

  1471. self-importance

  1472. does the

  1473. very same

  1474. thing to

  1475. us.

  1476. It takes

  1477. the gifts

  1478. or the

  1479. calling or

  1480. the position

  1481. or the

  1482. influence or

  1483. the victories

  1484. that we've

  1485. received by

  1486. grace and

  1487. turns them

  1488. into reasons

  1489. we think

  1490. others must

  1491. recognize us

  1492. and trust us

  1493. and support

  1494. and defer

  1495. to us.

  1496. us.

  1497. We should

  1498. never confuse

  1499. being used

  1500. by God

  1501. with being

  1502. important in

  1503. and of

  1504. ourselves.

  1505. You see,

  1506. the importance

  1507. of the work

  1508. he entrusts

  1509. to us

  1510. does not

  1511. transfer into

  1512. personal

  1513. significance

  1514. that others

  1515. must recognize.

  1516. And we

  1517. must guard

  1518. against allowing

  1519. God's cause

  1520. to become

  1521. entangled with

  1522. our own

  1523. reputation or

  1524. our own

  1525. grievances or

  1526. our own

  1527. desire for

  1528. vindication

  1529. because it's

  1530. dangerously

  1531. easy to

  1532. think we're

  1533. defending truth,

  1534. we're defending

  1535. ministry,

  1536. we're defending

  1537. the church,

  1538. we're defending

  1539. God,

  1540. when in

  1541. reality we're

  1542. just defending

  1543. ourselves.

  1544. So we must

  1545. ask ourselves,

  1546. am I seeking

  1547. the honor of

  1548. Christ or

  1549. just the

  1550. vindication of

  1551. my own

  1552. name?

  1553. The fourth

  1554. idol,

  1555. is the idol

  1556. of spiritual

  1557. experience.

  1558. The idol

  1559. of spiritual

  1560. experience.

  1561. Starting in

  1562. verse 22,

  1563. it says,

  1564. Then the men

  1565. of Israel

  1566. said to

  1567. Gideon,

  1568. rule over

  1569. us,

  1570. you and

  1571. your son

  1572. and your

  1573. grandson

  1574. also,

  1575. for you

  1576. have saved

  1577. us from

  1578. the hand

  1579. of Midian.

  1580. Gideon

  1581. said to

  1582. them,

  1583. I will

  1584. not rule

  1585. over you

  1586. and my

  1587. son will

  1588. not rule

  1589. over you,

  1590. the Lord

  1591. will rule

  1592. over you.

  1593. And Gideon

  1594. said to

  1595. them,

  1596. let me

  1597. make a

  1598. request

  1599. of you,

  1600. every one

  1601. of you,

  1602. give me

  1603. the earrings

  1604. from his

  1605. spoil.

  1606. For they

  1607. had golden

  1608. earrings because

  1609. they were

  1610. Ishmaelites.

  1611. And they

  1612. answered,

  1613. we will

  1614. willingly give

  1615. them.

  1616. And they

  1617. spread out a

  1618. cloak and

  1619. every man

  1620. threw in

  1621. at the

  1622. earrings of

  1623. his spoil.

  1624. And the

  1625. weight of

  1626. the golden

  1627. earrings that

  1628. he requested

  1629. was 1,700

  1630. shekels of

  1631. gold.

  1632. Besides the

  1633. crescent

  1634. ornaments and

  1635. the pendants

  1636. and the

  1637. purple garments

  1638. worn by the

  1639. kings of

  1640. Midian and

  1641. besides the

  1642. collars that

  1643. were around

  1644. the necks of

  1645. their camels.

  1646. And Gideon

  1647. made an

  1648. ephod of

  1649. it and

  1650. put it in

  1651. his city

  1652. in Ophrah.

  1653. And all

  1654. Israel

  1655. whored after

  1656. it there and

  1657. it became a

  1658. snare to

  1659. Gideon and

  1660. to his

  1661. family.

  1662. So Midian

  1663. was subdued

  1664. before the

  1665. people of

  1666. Israel and

  1667. they raised

  1668. their heads

  1669. no more and

  1670. the land had

  1671. rest for 40

  1672. years in the

  1673. days of

  1674. Gideon.

  1675. So now we're

  1676. back to where

  1677. we began.

  1678. Israel gives

  1679. Gideon the

  1680. glory that

  1681. belongs to

  1682. the Lord.

  1683. You have

  1684. saved us.

  1685. They elevate

  1686. the instrument

  1687. above the

  1688. God who

  1689. used him.

  1690. And they

  1691. seek permanent

  1692. hereditary

  1693. protection.

  1694. This is

  1695. working out

  1696. great for

  1697. us.

  1698. So you,

  1699. your son,

  1700. your grandson,

  1701. you just

  1702. keep doing

  1703. that.

  1704. And we

  1705. see Gideon

  1706. answer rightly.

  1707. I will

  1708. not rule

  1709. over you.

  1710. The Lord

  1711. will rule

  1712. over you.

  1713. But then

  1714. comes the

  1715. ephod.

  1716. Now I'm

  1717. going to be

  1718. honest.

  1719. Commentators

  1720. differ widely

  1721. about Gideon's

  1722. motives.

  1723. And the

  1724. text doesn't

  1725. explicitly tell

  1726. us.

  1727. But I

  1728. think the

  1729. details point

  1730. us in this

  1731. direction.

  1732. Think about

  1733. it.

  1734. Throughout

  1735. chapters 6

  1736. and 7,

  1737. Gideon

  1738. enjoys

  1739. extraordinary

  1740. direct

  1741. guidance from

  1742. God.

  1743. The angel

  1744. of the

  1745. Lord comes

  1746. and speaks

  1747. to him

  1748. face to

  1749. face.

  1750. There's

  1751. miraculous

  1752. signs.

  1753. There's

  1754. repeated

  1755. divine

  1756. speech.

  1757. There's

  1758. the fleece.

  1759. There's

  1760. even the

  1761. providential

  1762. dream in

  1763. the

  1764. Midianite

  1765. camp.

  1766. But after

  1767. Judges 7

  1768. 9,

  1769. there's

  1770. no

  1771. recorded

  1772. word from

  1773. the Lord

  1774. to Gideon

  1775. again.

  1776. That silence

  1777. must have

  1778. been deafening.

  1779. And then

  1780. elsewhere in

  1781. Scripture,

  1782. we see that

  1783. the priestly

  1784. The ephod

  1785. is connected

  1786. with the

  1787. God-appointed

  1788. priesthood

  1789. and with

  1790. seeking the

  1791. Lord's

  1792. direction.

  1793. In your

  1794. listening guide,

  1795. there's several

  1796. passages there

  1797. about the

  1798. ephod.

  1799. You could

  1800. look up

  1801. if you'd

  1802. like to

  1803. read some

  1804. more.

  1805. But because

  1806. of that,

  1807. I think it's

  1808. plausible that

  1809. Gideon wanted

  1810. a continuing

  1811. means to

  1812. access God's

  1813. guidance.

  1814. What one

  1815. commentator

  1816. fitly calls,

  1817. he wants a

  1818. permanent

  1819. fleece.

  1820. I think the

  1821. location is

  1822. important too,

  1823. right?

  1824. Because Gideon

  1825. puts it in

  1826. Ophrah.

  1827. And remember,

  1828. that's the

  1829. place where

  1830. God first

  1831. appeared to

  1832. Gideon.

  1833. Where God

  1834. miraculously

  1835. accepts his

  1836. offering.

  1837. Where God

  1838. speaks peace

  1839. to him and

  1840. where Gideon

  1841. builds the

  1842. altar that he

  1843. calls the

  1844. Lord is

  1845. peace.

  1846. So as a

  1847. result,

  1848. I believe

  1849. Gideon may

  1850. have been

  1851. trying to

  1852. preserve or

  1853. restore direct

  1854. access to the

  1855. Lord.

  1856. And if that's

  1857. true, we

  1858. might perhaps

  1859. hear an

  1860. unspoken

  1861. addition to

  1862. his words.

  1863. The Lord

  1864. will rule over

  1865. you and

  1866. perhaps I can

  1867. continue to be a

  1868. conduit of his

  1869. direction.

  1870. Now, even

  1871. assuming the

  1872. very best of

  1873. Gideon's

  1874. intentions, the

  1875. problem is

  1876. nonetheless very

  1877. serious.

  1878. Because God

  1879. had already

  1880. established how

  1881. his people were

  1882. to approach

  1883. him through

  1884. the tabernacle,

  1885. through the

  1886. priesthood,

  1887. through the

  1888. means that

  1889. God had

  1890. appointed.

  1891. And no

  1892. matter how

  1893. much failure

  1894. the priests

  1895. or the

  1896. Levites were

  1897. guilty of at

  1898. this time,

  1899. it didn't

  1900. give Gideon

  1901. the right to

  1902. create an

  1903. alternate

  1904. system.

  1905. That there's

  1906. never a good

  1907. reason to

  1908. seek God

  1909. or to

  1910. worship God

  1911. in a way

  1912. that's

  1913. contrary to

  1914. his word.

  1915. So instead

  1916. of allowing

  1917. God to

  1918. determine how

  1919. his people

  1920. approach him,

  1921. Gideon builds

  1922. a religious

  1923. practice around

  1924. the place and

  1925. the experience

  1926. that were

  1927. personally

  1928. meaningful to

  1929. him.

  1930. And whether

  1931. intended or

  1932. not, the

  1933. result draws

  1934. Israel away

  1935. from the

  1936. legitimate

  1937. sanctuary and

  1938. the legitimate

  1939. priesthood and

  1940. Israel hoard

  1941. after the

  1942. ephod.

  1943. You see, the

  1944. desire for

  1945. extraordinary

  1946. spiritual

  1947. experience becomes

  1948. a substitute

  1949. for ordinary

  1950. dependence and

  1951. obedience to

  1952. the Lord.

  1953. And in turn,

  1954. it tells us the

  1955. very thing Gideon

  1956. makes becomes a

  1957. snare to him

  1958. and to his

  1959. family.

  1960. And I think

  1961. that danger

  1962. remains for

  1963. us, right?

  1964. Because it's

  1965. so easy for us

  1966. to begin to

  1967. treat yesterday's

  1968. dramatic

  1969. experience as

  1970. more real than

  1971. today's reading

  1972. of God's

  1973. word.

  1974. We can easily

  1975. come to believe

  1976. that an intense

  1977. feeling is more

  1978. trustworthy than

  1979. ordinary obedience.

  1980. Or to think

  1981. that we have to

  1982. come up with

  1983. some special

  1984. method to draw

  1985. near to God

  1986. beyond the

  1987. means that he

  1988. has given.

  1989. But the Lord

  1990. rules his people

  1991. by his word

  1992. and prayer,

  1993. through his

  1994. spirit,

  1995. and through

  1996. consistent

  1997. communion with

  1998. the people of

  1999. God.

  2000. We don't

  2001. honor the

  2002. Lord by

  2003. chasing spiritual

  2004. experiences,

  2005. some emotional

  2006. spiritual highs,

  2007. but by

  2008. faithful daily

  2009. obedience through

  2010. the means that

  2011. he has prescribed

  2012. in his word.

  2013. So the fifth

  2014. point, fifth and

  2015. final point,

  2016. the Lord rules

  2017. through the

  2018. better king.

  2019. The Lord rules

  2020. through the

  2021. better king.

  2022. Continuing in

  2023. verse 29,

  2024. says Jeroboel,

  2025. the son of

  2026. Joash, went

  2027. and lived in

  2028. his own house.

  2029. Now Gideon

  2030. had 70 sons,

  2031. his own

  2032. offspring, for

  2033. he had many

  2034. wives.

  2035. And his

  2036. concubine, who

  2037. was in Shechem,

  2038. also bore him

  2039. a son, and he

  2040. called his name

  2041. Abimelech.

  2042. And Gideon,

  2043. the son of

  2044. Joash, died

  2045. in a good old

  2046. age and was

  2047. buried in the

  2048. tomb of Joash's

  2049. father at

  2050. Ophrah of the

  2051. Abiezarites.

  2052. As soon as

  2053. Gideon died,

  2054. the people of

  2055. Israel turned

  2056. again and

  2057. whored after

  2058. the Baals and

  2059. made Baal

  2060. Beareth their

  2061. God.

  2062. And the people

  2063. of Israel did

  2064. not remember

  2065. the Lord their

  2066. God who had

  2067. delivered them

  2068. from the hand

  2069. of all their

  2070. enemies on

  2071. every side.

  2072. And they did

  2073. not show

  2074. steadfast love

  2075. to the family

  2076. of Jeroboel,

  2077. that is Gideon,

  2078. in return for

  2079. all the good

  2080. that he had

  2081. done to Israel.

  2082. Now I want

  2083. to just point

  2084. back to verse

  2085. 28 briefly,

  2086. because it

  2087. says the

  2088. land had

  2089. rest for

  2090. 40 years in

  2091. the days of

  2092. Gideon.

  2093. And it's

  2094. worth noting

  2095. that this is

  2096. the last time

  2097. in the book

  2098. of Judges

  2099. that it

  2100. records the

  2101. Lord giving

  2102. Israel rest.

  2103. And from

  2104. here the

  2105. downward spiral

  2106. is going to

  2107. accelerate.

  2108. We also need

  2109. to notice that

  2110. the dynasty

  2111. that Gideon

  2112. verbally rejected

  2113. seems to

  2114. emerge anyway.

  2115. He lives

  2116. like a king

  2117. in some of

  2118. the worst

  2119. possible ways.

  2120. He has many

  2121. wives and

  2122. 70 sons and

  2123. concubine.

  2124. He names

  2125. his concubine's

  2126. son Abimelech,

  2127. which means

  2128. my father is

  2129. king.

  2130. We also see

  2131. Israel spirals

  2132. downward with

  2133. him.

  2134. As soon as

  2135. Gideon dies,

  2136. they hoard

  2137. after the

  2138. Baals and

  2139. made Baal

  2140. bareth,

  2141. which means

  2142. Lord of the

  2143. covenant,

  2144. their God.

  2145. Verse 34

  2146. gives us

  2147. the heart of

  2148. the tragedy.

  2149. The people of

  2150. Israel did not

  2151. remember the

  2152. Lord their God

  2153. who had

  2154. delivered them.

  2155. Israel abandons

  2156. covenant faithfulness

  2157. to Yahweh to

  2158. form a covenant

  2159. with Baal.

  2160. Gideon's story

  2161. leaves us longing

  2162. for a better

  2163. judge,

  2164. for a true

  2165. king.

  2166. Gideon did

  2167. real good for

  2168. Israel,

  2169. but he could

  2170. not deliver

  2171. them from the

  2172. deepest enemies,

  2173. their pride,

  2174. their rebellion,

  2175. their self-rule,

  2176. and the desire

  2177. to combine

  2178. whatever seemed

  2179. useful from the

  2180. surrounding culture

  2181. with their

  2182. worship of God.

  2183. Gideon's life

  2184. contains remarkable

  2185. faithfulness and

  2186. startling failure,

  2187. and Israel

  2188. ends his story

  2189. spiritually worse

  2190. than when it

  2191. began for the

  2192. first time in

  2193. Judges.

  2194. It'll be about

  2195. a thousand years

  2196. from that point

  2197. until the better

  2198. deliverer Israel

  2199. needed,

  2200. and the

  2201. deliverer that

  2202. we need

  2203. enters history.

  2204. That'll be

  2205. Jesus,

  2206. the Son of

  2207. God.

  2208. Now,

  2209. this morning,

  2210. maybe you found

  2211. yourself somewhere

  2212. in Gideon's

  2213. story.

  2214. Maybe you know

  2215. about God,

  2216. but don't truly

  2217. know him,

  2218. or what he's done

  2219. through Jesus.

  2220. Maybe you keep

  2221. returning to

  2222. patterns of

  2223. rebellion,

  2224. and you need to

  2225. hear the word

  2226. of the Lord

  2227. afresh.

  2228. Maybe you feel

  2229. weak,

  2230. or fearful,

  2231. or hopeless

  2232. before enemies

  2233. that seem too

  2234. strong,

  2235. or innumerable

  2236. for you.

  2237. Or maybe the

  2238. Lord has exposed

  2239. an idol in your

  2240. life,

  2241. a craving for

  2242. recognition,

  2243. a demand for

  2244. security,

  2245. a spirit of

  2246. self-importance,

  2247. or a pursuit of

  2248. spiritual experiences

  2249. that eclipses

  2250. God's word

  2251. and ordinary

  2252. obedience.

  2253. But wherever

  2254. you find yourself

  2255. this morning,

  2256. our hope can

  2257. only be found

  2258. in one place,

  2259. letting the

  2260. Lord rule

  2261. our lives

  2262. through the

  2263. better king,

  2264. King Jesus.

  2265. So I want to

  2266. invite you

  2267. wherever you

  2268. are this

  2269. morning to

  2270. consider coming

  2271. to Jesus this

  2272. morning in

  2273. honest repentance.

  2274. Just admitting

  2275. to him the

  2276. things that you

  2277. have seen

  2278. about yourself

  2279. and asking

  2280. his forgiveness

  2281. and committing

  2282. to turn away

  2283. from those

  2284. things.

  2285. I invite you

  2286. to renew

  2287. your commitment

  2288. to Christ's

  2289. lordship in

  2290. your life

  2291. and to

  2292. determine that

  2293. you're going

  2294. to live in

  2295. daily dependence

  2296. on his word

  2297. and prayer

  2298. and to make

  2299. consistent

  2300. communion with

  2301. Jesus and his

  2302. people a

  2303. priority in

  2304. your life.

  2305. It's in doing

  2306. those things

  2307. that the Lord

  2308. will rule over

  2309. you.

  2310. So the Lord

  2311. rules through

  2312. our weakness,

  2313. the Lord

  2314. rules mercifully

  2315. in our fear,

  2316. the Lord

  2317. rules by

  2318. exposing the

  2319. idols of

  2320. our hearts.

  2321. Let the

  2322. Lord rule

  2323. your life

  2324. through the

  2325. better king,

  2326. Jesus Christ.

  2327. Let's pray.

  2328. Father, we

  2329. thank you for

  2330. your word.

  2331. We thank you

  2332. that you have

  2333. not left us

  2334. to ourselves,

  2335. but that you

  2336. deal so

  2337. patiently with

  2338. us.

  2339. And Father,

  2340. we confess

  2341. we are so

  2342. often inclined

  2343. to follow

  2344. the idols

  2345. of our

  2346. heart.

  2347. Father, we

  2348. pray that

  2349. even now

  2350. that you

  2351. would give

  2352. us resolve

  2353. to cast

  2354. them away,

  2355. to cling

  2356. to Christ,

  2357. to live

  2358. our lives

  2359. under the

  2360. rule of

  2361. Jesus,

  2362. our Lord,

  2363. that we

  2364. might become

  2365. a clearer

  2366. reflection

  2367. individually

  2368. and as a

  2369. church of

  2370. who Christ

  2371. is,

  2372. that we

  2373. would see

  2374. more and

  2375. more people

  2376. worship him

  2377. as he

  2378. deserves.

  2379. Father,

  2380. thank you

  2381. for this

  2382. day.

  2383. May you

  2384. be exalted

  2385. in our

  2386. lives.

  2387. In Jesus'

  2388. name,

  2389. amen.

  2390. Thank you,

  2391. guys.

  2392. Have a great

  2393. day.

  2394. Thank you.
