  1. What an amazing promise, right?

  2. Come to Jesus and rest in Him.

  3. ! Have you felt that at all this week?

  4. ! Have you felt settled?

  5. ! Have you felt at rest?

  6. Have you felt the sense of God's got this?

  7. I can trust Him.

  8. Or are you like I tend to be?

  9. Where I want to be in a place of rest,

  10. but I keep finding myself in a place of striving,

  11. in a place of pursuing,

  12. in a place of working things out,

  13. trying to make things happen,

  14. and not a place of rest.

  15. God wants, He invites us to that.

  16. We can find that in His Son, Jesus Christ.

  17. It's not that the troubles go away.

  18. It's not that the pressures are lifted.

  19. It's that Jesus strengthens us to be able to move forward.

  20. He gives us that settled confidence that we can trust Him.

  21. That's where the rest comes.

  22. Not in removing the problems,

  23. but in presenting the solution in Christ.

  24. And what a joy that is that we can find rest in Him.

  25. It's what we have found as we've been working our way through the book of Judges.

  26. And I would encourage you to please turn there.

  27. In the book of Judges, if you're using the Pew Bible,

  28. we're on page 211.

  29. Judges chapter 10, 11, and 12 is where we're going to be this morning,

    Judges 10 chapter mention

  30. kind of working our way through this book

  31. and reminding ourselves what it's supposed to look like

  32. when we follow the instructions that God has laid before us.

  33. It looks like rest.

  34. And that's what the people experienced,

  35. at least through the first four Judges.

  36. God brought rest to the land.

  37. It says the land had rest.

  38. The land had rest.

  39. The land had rest.

  40. Four times the land had rest.

  41. From this point on, there is no rest in the land.

  42. Partly because the people had abandoned the standard.

  43. The moral depravity of the nation had collapsed.

  44. And what we saw last week, we're going to turn to briefly again today.

  45. The accusation of God against the people,

  46. their apostasy, their rebellion.

  47. And God says, I'm not going to drive the people out anymore.

  48. I'm just not going to do it.

  49. Because whatever token confession and repentance,

  50. whatever token revival there seems to be,

  51. I know the true heart of this.

  52. I know the reality of what's true in your heart and life.

  53. And that's kind of what we have been tracing

  54. as we've been walking through this book.

  55. And we'll get there in just a moment.

  56. But what I've just really appreciated through this study

  57. is seeing the faithfulness of the Lord.

  58. It's called the study of faithfulness and failure.

  59. That in spite of our unfaithfulness,

  60. in spite of our failures,

  61. God remains faithful.

  62. Wow.

  63. Marvel at the faithfulness of God.

  64. The only way to really marvel at the faithfulness of God

  65. is to have a very clear picture of what we deserve.

  66. What we deserve.

  67. And we're seeing that front and center

  68. in our study through the judges.

  69. We're seeing what we deserve.

  70. How our rebellion pushes us away from God

  71. and how that moral ruin leads to disaster

  72. within our families and in our communities

  73. and in the nation itself

  74. and the outward opposition that's experienced.

  75. And that's what God warned the people about.

  76. He wanted them to enjoy rest.

  77. But it only comes one way.

  78. It only comes as we anchor faith in God Himself

  79. and we walk by His standard.

  80. I'm going to have the privilege here

  81. in just a little under a month

  82. to be able to teach the entire Old Testament

  83. to a group of students,

  84. pastors and Christian leaders in Central Asia.

  85. I'm going to be traveling with Daniel Cain.

  86. We heard about the Tri-M ministry,

  87. mobile modular ministry,

  88. and I'll have a chance to do that

  89. in just a few weeks from now.

  90. And I would just, will you pray for me?

  91. Trying to get my arms around the Old Testament

  92. and like, what does Leviticus have to offer?

  93. You know, I can talk about sacrifices,

  94. but I mean, how does Leviticus encourage

  95. a group of pastors?

  96. And let me tell you, we know it does

  97. because we know that all Scripture

  98. is given by inspiration of God.

  99. It's profitable for doctrine, reproof,

  100. correction, instruction, and righteousness.

  101. It is profitable for us.

  102. So help, please pray that God helps me

  103. to get my arms around the Old Testament

  104. and to be able to present it in a way

  105. that is not just informative,

  106. not just instructive, but is inspiring.

  107. That they're inspired by the wonder

  108. of God's initiative among His people,

  109. drawing people to Himself,

  110. making a people that's fit for God.

  111. What an opportunity that is.

  112. And pray for my family,

  113. as I'm going to be away for a couple of weeks

  114. and pray for Pastor David,

  115. who will be preaching in my place.

  116. It's a collaborative effort,

  117. and I am grateful for your help with that.

  118. And then at the end of this year,

  119. in December, I'm going to be teaching again

  120. next time in Central America.

  121. So first in Central Asia,

  122. now in Central America.

  123. And that assignment is the New Testament.

  124. So I thought it was just going to be one book.

  125. It turns out to be the entire New Testament,

  126. except for the Gospels.

  127. And I, you know,

  128. what a great opportunity.

  129. You'll see the whole framework,

  130. the whole storyline of the Scripture.

  131. And it's the same, by the way.

  132. Because the God of the Old Testament

  133. that makes a people for Himself

  134. is the same God of the New Testament

  135. who, guess what,

  136. makes a people for Himself.

  137. He will build His church, right?

  138. And the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

  139. It is God's work.

  140. And so we trust in God's strategy

  141. to do God's work.

  142. And when we do,

  143. we can count on God's favor.

  144. And not that everything goes well.

  145. Not that our life is perfect,

  146. but that we can trust God

  147. to work even the hard things out

  148. for our good and for His glory.

  149. That's the joy.

  150. What a joy I will get to have

  151. because of your willingness to let me go

  152. and to let me be part of this

  153. and the investment that will happen

  154. in two different parts of the hemisphere

  155. because of the faithful ministry

  156. that you are having here at Maranatha

  157. and I get to be part of.

  158. We also, at the end of the service,

  159. will have another baptism

  160. and just another visible picture

  161. of how God is bringing people into His family.

  162. And they are coming to Christ

  163. and we get to demonstrate this visible picture

  164. of what it means to be part of Christ.

  165. In Christ, kind of this baptizing them

  166. into the Lord Jesus.

  167. They are there,

  168. but this is kind of the visible portrayal

  169. of what God has already accomplished for them.

  170. So we get to do that

  171. at the end of this service today.

  172. Well, we're continuing our study

  173. through the book of Judges

  174. and I want to just put this graphic

  175. back up on the screen for you.

  176. You have this on your outlines.

  177. We covered most of this

  178. last time we were together,

  179. but I just want to,

  180. for those of you who were not here

  181. or for the rest of you

  182. that kind of need a reminder,

  183. here's what we talked about.

  184. There were three patterns

  185. that we developed

  186. or that we saw kind of

  187. are working simultaneously

  188. in the book of Judges.

  189. The first, you see that kind of

  190. that downward slope

  191. and that's meant to indicate

  192. this moral decline

  193. that's taking place among the people.

  194. It's summarized for us

  195. in Judges 2, verse 19,

    Judges 2:19

  196. where it says,

  197. whenever the judge died,

  198. they turned back

  199. and were more corrupt

  200. than their fathers,

  201. going after other gods,

  202. serving them

  203. and bowing down to them.

  204. They did not stop

  205. any of their practices

  206. or their stubborn ways.

  207. And this is the testimony.

  208. This is the cadence

  209. of these individuals,

  210. the moral collapse

  211. that's happening among the people.

  212. That second pattern

  213. is that God,

  214. He's been raising up judges.

  215. He's been raising up deliverers.

  216. And you kind of see

  217. on the top left,

  218. I guess this is your left, right?

  219. The top left of that chart,

  220. you see the point

  221. of God raising up those deliverers.

  222. We find in chapter 3, verse 9,

  223. the Lord raised up a deliverer

  224. for the people.

  225. In chapter 3, verse 15,

  226. the Lord raised up

  227. for them a deliverer,

  228. Ehud, the son of Gerah.

  229. In chapter 4, verses 6 and 7,

  230. Deborah is speaking to Barak.

  231. She says,

  232. Has not the Lord God of Israel

  233. commanded you,

  234. Go! Gather your men!

  235. And I will draw out Sisera,

  236. and I will give him

  237. into your hands,

  238. says the Lord.

  239. Then God shows up

  240. to Gideon in chapter 6.

  241. The Lord appeared to Gideon

  242. and said to him,

  243. The Lord is with you,

  244. mighty man of valor.

  245. Go in this might of yours

  246. and save Israel

  247. from the hand of Midian.

  248. Do I not send you?

  249. I will be with you.

  250. God raising up deliverers.

  251. And the third pattern

  252. is the pattern

  253. of this conflict

  254. that's getting closer

  255. and closer to Israel.

  256. It starts far away.

  257. It starts in Mesopotamia,

  258. 700 miles away from Israel.

  259. And it gets progressively closer

  260. as the Moabites

  261. are neighbors in Ehud.

  262. Then it makes its way

  263. into Israel

  264. as the Canaanites

  265. are now going to be

  266. opposed by Barak.

  267. And then it kind of

  268. crosses the boundary

  269. as it were

  270. as now it's part of the family.

  271. The Midianites

  272. who are actually

  273. sons of Abraham

  274. are now bringing the conflict

  275. right home to Israel.

  276. And then from Gideon on out

  277. there is this internal conflict,

  278. this internal struggle.

  279. Now the nations,

  280. now Israel is fighting itself.

  281. It's tribal warfare

  282. that's taking place.

  283. We noticed

  284. last time we were together

  285. the trajectory

  286. where God-appointed deliverers

  287. have now become

  288. self-appointed saviors.

  289. That God raised up deliverers

  290. at the beginning of this book.

  291. And now after Gideon,

  292. we find this new pattern

  293. of the judges

  294. are raising up themselves.

  295. We see that in chapter 10,

  296. verse 1.

  297. We see that

  298. after Abimelech

  299. there arose to save Israel

  300. Tola,

  301. the son of Puah.

  302. And we notice

  303. in chapter 10,

  304. verse 3,

  305. after him arose

  306. Jer,

  307. the Gileadite,

  308. who served Israel.

  309. And we notice

  310. in chapter 12,

  311. we notice the same pattern.

  312. 12, verse 8,

  313. after him,

  314. Ibsen of Bethlehem

  315. judged Israel.

  316. And on and on it goes.

  317. Now self-appointed saviors

  318. have taken place.

  319. And God is nowhere

  320. a part of the picture.

  321. They assume the role

  322. of leadership.

  323. They're their own

  324. self-appointed savior,

  325. as it were.

  326. And kind of coupled

  327. with all of this,

  328. we recognize this pattern

  329. that's also beginning

  330. to emerge.

  331. Remember that Gideon

  332. had 70 sons.

  333. And that same pattern

  334. of empire building

  335. is showing up

  336. in these new judges

  337. as well.

  338. where Jer,

  339. in Judges chapter 10,

    Judges 10:4

  340. verse 4,

  341. he has 30 sons

  342. who rode 30 donkeys.

  343. They had 30 cities.

  344. This empire building,

  345. this gaining influence,

  346. this wanting to have

  347. prominence in the land.

  348. Ibsen,

  349. when we go to chapter 12,

  350. verse 9,

  351. it says,

  352. he had 30 sons

  353. and 30 daughters

  354. he gave in marriage

  355. outside his clan.

  356. 30 daughters he brought

  357. in from outside

  358. for his sons.

  359. So we've got a total

  360. of 60 individuals

  361. who've all been brought

  362. in to help

  363. empire build

  364. for this judge

  365. who wants to gain

  366. prominence.

  367. Then Abdon,

  368. in chapter 12,

  369. verse 14,

  370. he had 40 sons

  371. and 30 grandsons

  372. who rode 70 donkeys.

  373. That word,

  374. the number 70

  375. should sound

  376. really familiar.

  377. They might not have

  378. been formally kings,

  379. but they are acting

  380. like kings.

  381. We're meant to see

  382. this pattern

  383. both before Jephthah

  384. and after Jephthah

  385. to kind of provide

  386. this sandwich for us,

  387. these bookends

  388. that help to frame

  389. and understand

  390. the life of Jephthah

  391. himself.

  392. How are we to

  393. understand his life?

  394. How are we to understand

  395. his leadership?

  396. Well, he's encapsulated

  397. within this empire

  398. building strategy

  399. of the judges

  400. and he serves

  401. as kind of

  402. this pattern

  403. for us

  404. to help us

  405. interpret

  406. what we see.

  407. Last week,

  408. we also saw

  409. that the people

  410. have confused

  411. godly sorrow

  412. with worldly sorrow.

  413. These cycles

  414. of rebellion

  415. that have taken place

  416. and they have become,

  417. the people have become

  418. more concerned

  419. with removing

  420. consequences

  421. than they have

  422. with being

  423. consecrated.

  424. They've been

  425. more concerned

  426. with getting rid

  427. of their problems

  428. instead of

  429. being truly pure.

  430. They're more

  431. fascinated

  432. with fixating

  433. on their situation

  434. than they were

  435. with being

  436. sanctified.

  437. They want to

  438. remove

  439. the challenges.

  440. They want to

  441. resist

  442. the problems.

  443. They want to

  444. move past

  445. all the difficulties

  446. that they're experiencing.

  447. Whatever they can do

  448. to remove

  449. those consequences

  450. to move on

  451. with their life

  452. to have some level

  453. of comfort again.

  454. We noted

  455. the cycles

  456. of rebellion

  457. that marked

  458. this people

  459. in chapter 10

  460. verses 6-16.

  461. We saw

  462. these six

  463. cycles of rebellion

  464. that kind of

  465. culminate

  466. in chapter 10

  467. in this final

  468. seventh

  469. confrontation

  470. of the Lord

  471. against His people

  472. in chapter 10

  473. verse 6.

  474. It says,

  475. the people of Israel

  476. again did what was

  477. evil in the sight

  478. of the Lord.

  479. They served

  480. the Baals

  481. and the Ashtra,

  482. the gods of Syria,

  483. the gods of Sidon,

  484. the gods of Moab,

  485. the gods of the Ammonites,

  486. and the gods

  487. of the Philistines.

  488. And they forsook

  489. the Lord

  490. and did not

  491. serve Him.

  492. At this point

  493. the pattern

  494. has become

  495. tragically clear.

  496. And what was

  497. true of the

  498. people of the nation

  499. at the beginning

  500. abandoning themselves

  501. to the foreign gods

  502. which are listed

  503. the Baals

  504. and the Ashtra

  505. there are only two

  506. that are present

  507. up until

  508. this point

  509. in chapter 10

  510. and now we have

  511. the full list

  512. of all the deities

  513. of the nations

  514. that have

  515. polluted the people.

  516. Seven deities

  517. that are listed

  518. here.

  519. It's meant

  520. to show

  521. the totality

  522. of the moral

  523. collapse

  524. that has taken

  525. place among

  526. His people.

  527. In chapter 10

  528. we will see

  529. the last

  530. cry

  531. of the people

  532. to the Lord.

  533. In chapter 10

  534. we will see

  535. the last time

  536. the people

  537. will confess

  538. their sin.

  539. We're going to see

  540. in chapter 10

  541. the last time

  542. sin will be

  543. confronted

  544. by God.

  545. And while

  546. the response

  547. in chapter 10

  548. seems sincere

  549. it might seem

  550. somewhat encouraging

  551. God knows

  552. the heart.

  553. Look there

  554. in chapter 10

  555. verse 10

  556. it says

  557. and the people

  558. of Israel

  559. cried out

  560. to the Lord

  561. saying

  562. we have

  563. sinned

  564. against you

  565. because we

  566. have forsaken

  567. our God

  568. and have served

  569. the Baals

  570. but God

  571. knows

  572. their true

  573. heart.

  574. Verse 13

  575. you have

  576. forsaken

  577. me

  578. and you

  579. have served

  580. other gods

  581. therefore

  582. I will

  583. save you

  584. no more.

  585. Now

  586. that might

  587. be a little

  588. confusing

  589. because we're

  590. going to see

  591. in Jephthah's

  592. story

  593. that God

  594. delivers

  595. the people

  596. from the

  597. oppression

  598. of the

  599. Ammonites.

  600. We're going

  601. to see

  602. in Samson's

  603. story

  604. that God

  605. uses

  606. Samson

  607. to help

  608. drive out

  609. a portion

  610. of the

  611. Philistines

  612. so in

  613. that sense

  614. God is

  615. saving the

  616. people

  617. but what

  618. kind of

  619. salvation

  620. is God

  621. talking about?

  622. I will

  623. save you

  624. no more?

  625. What kind

  626. of salvation

  627. are we

  628. talking about?

  629. Well God

  630. is not going

  631. to save

  632. them from

  633. themselves.

  634. Remember

  635. the warning

  636. going all

  637. the way

  638. back to

  639. the earlier

  640. parts of

  641. this book

  642. and the

  643. warning

  644. was this

  645. the nations

  646. will become

  647. a snare

  648. to you

  649. they're going

  650. to trip

  651. you up

  652. and Canaan

  653. is going

  654. to enter

  655. the land

  656. and that's

  657. exactly

  658. what we've

  659. seen.

  660. Canaan

  661. has gotten

  662. into the

  663. people

  664. has gotten

  665. into their

  666. theology

  667. has gotten

  668. into their

  669. practices

  670. has gotten

  671. into their

  672. thinking

  673. has now

  674. corrupted

  675. their behavior

  676. and so Canaan

  677. has gotten

  678. into them

  679. there is no

  680. driving them

  681. out at this

  682. point because

  683. they are totally

  684. immersed in the

  685. culture of the

  686. people.

  687. There's no

  688. deliverance to be

  689. had until

  690. unless the

  691. people themselves

  692. will give

  693. themselves over

  694. the Lord

  695. and will repent

  696. and be consecrated

  697. in the way

  698. that God really

  699. wants.

  700. Not just to put

  701. off certain

  702. foreign practices

  703. but be totally

  704. cleansed as a

  705. people.

  706. So the people

  707. will not be

  708. delivered from

  709. the greatest

  710. oppression

  711. the oppression

  712. of the

  713. corruption

  714. within them.

  715. See God

  716. has given

  717. them over

  718. to their

  719. cravings

  720. and that's

  721. what we'll

  722. continue to

  723. see as we

  724. move our

  725. way through

  726. that the

  727. people are

  728. set on

  729. desire

  730. their flesh

  731. is driving

  732. them

  733. and that's

  734. exactly by the

  735. way what we

  736. see in the

  737. book of

  738. Romans

  739. where God

  740. has made

  741. himself very

  742. clear to

  743. the nations

  744. to us

  745. through his

  746. revelation of

  747. his word but

  748. also through

  749. the revelation

  750. of himself

  751. in creation

  752. so that we

  753. are left

  754. without an

  755. excuse but

  756. what do we

  757. do even

  758. though we

  759. know who

  760. God is?

  761. Well God

  762. demonstrates a

  763. three pronged

  764. progression that

  765. takes place in

  766. the life

  767. of culture

  768. who set

  769. themselves

  770. against God

  771. just like we

  772. find in the

  773. book of

  774. Judges.

  775. Romans 1

  776. 24 is the

  777. first step

  778. it says

  779. God gave

  780. them up

  781. in the

  782. lusts of

  783. their hearts

  784. to impurity

  785. to the

  786. dishonoring of

  787. their bodies

  788. among themselves.

  789. Then it

  790. moves on to

  791. verse 26

  792. so then God

  793. gives them

  794. up.

  795. Chapter 1

  796. verse 26

  797. God gave

  798. them up to

  799. dishonorable

  800. passions

  801. for their

  802. women exchanged

  803. natural relations

  804. for those

  805. that are

  806. contrary to

  807. nature

  808. and the

  809. men likewise

  810. gave up

  811. natural relations

  812. with women

  813. and were

  814. consumed with

  815. passions for

  816. one another.

  817. It's now

  818. embedded in

  819. culture.

  820. It's now

  821. changing their

  822. natural desires.

  823. Natural things

  824. aren't natural

  825. anymore.

  826. And you might

  827. feel like that

  828. is the last

  829. step but it

  830. goes one

  831. step further

  832. in verse 28

  833. and 29.

  834. So God

  835. gives them

  836. up to a

  837. debased

  838. mind to

  839. do what

  840. ought not

  841. to be

  842. done.

  843. They are

  844. full of

  845. envy,

  846. murder,

  847. strife,

  848. deceit,

  849. maliciousness,

  850. they are

  851. gossips,

  852. slanderers,

  853. haters of

  854. God,

  855. insolent,

  856. haughty,

  857. boastful,

  858. inventors of

  859. evil,

  860. disobedient to

  861. parents,

  862. foolish,

  863. faithless,

  864. heartless,

  865. ruthless.

  866. That's the

  867. end of

  868. moral decay.

  869. Does that

  870. sound familiar

  871. to the

  872. culture that

  873. we're living

  874. in?

  875. Reveling,

  876. glorying,

  877. magnifying,

  878. celebrating,

  879. baseness,

  880. ruthlessness,

  881. independence,

  882. resistance of

  883. authority,

  884. wanting to

  885. build our

  886. own comforts

  887. and materialism

  888. and consumerism

  889. and all of

  890. these manner

  891. of things that

  892. are so embedded

  893. in our culture

  894. and they

  895. seem so

  896. normal to

  897. us because

  898. it's what

  899. we see

  900. every single

  901. day of

  902. our life.

  903. This is the

  904. end of the

  905. slide.

  906. Disobedient

  907. to parents,

  908. what should

  909. be so

  910. natural

  911. becomes

  912. resistance,

  913. ruthlessness.

  914. That's what

  915. we're going to

  916. see in the

  917. story of

  918. Jephthah,

  919. this coming

  920. through.

  921. And the

  922. way that

  923. we magnify

  924. and celebrate

  925. brutality in

  926. this day,

  927. the gladiator

  928. games have

  929. come close,

  930. haven't they?

  931. We celebrate

  932. all manner

  933. of brutality.

  934. We're going

  935. to see this

  936. first turn in

  937. chapter 12.

  938. I want to

  939. show you

  940. kind of the

  941. end of the

  942. story so we

  943. can kind of

  944. use this as a

  945. signpost to

  946. help us

  947. recognize what's

  948. taking place

  949. earlier in the

  950. story.

  951. This is how

  952. it all plays

  953. out in

  954. Jephthah's

  955. life in

  956. chapter 12

  957. verses 1 to

  958. 7.

  959. We're going

  960. to see

  961. Jephthah's

  962. true heart

  963. is revealed.

  964. His true

  965. heart is

  966. revealed.

  967. It's what's

  968. coming through.

  969. You see,

  970. to kind of

  971. catch you up

  972. to this

  973. story,

  974. we're going

  975. to come

  976. back to

  977. it,

  978. but bear

  979. with me.

  980. So God

  981. has allowed

  982. Jephthah to

  983. be a

  984. deliverer of

  985. sorts,

  986. this kind

  987. of self-appointed

  988. deliverer,

  989. and God

  990. mercifully uses

  991. him to drive

  992. out the

  993. Ammonites and

  994. to help

  995. rescue the

  996. nation.

  997. That is

  998. God's

  999. mercy.

  1000. And the

  1001. Ephraimites

  1002. are not

  1003. happy about

  1004. it.

  1005. They were

  1006. afraid to

  1007. enter the

  1008. battle

  1009. themselves,

  1010. but once

  1011. the battle

  1012. has been

  1013. won,

  1014. and once

  1015. Jephthah is

  1016. being celebrated

  1017. by the

  1018. nation,

  1019. and the

  1020. Ephraimites

  1021. had no part

  1022. in it,

  1023. now they're

  1024. a little

  1025. upset.

  1026. So we

  1027. find in

  1028. chapter 12

  1029. verses 1

  1030. and 4

  1031. this.

  1032. The men

  1033. of Ephraim

  1034. were called

  1035. to arms.

  1036. Why?

  1037. Well,

  1038. they crossed

  1039. over to

  1040. Zaphon and

  1041. said to

  1042. Jephthah,

  1043. why did

  1044. you cross

  1045. over to

  1046. fight against

  1047. the Ammonites

  1048. and did

  1049. not call

  1050. us to

  1051. go with

  1052. you?

  1053. We will

  1054. burn your

  1055. house over

  1056. your head

  1057. with fire.

  1058. And

  1059. Jephthah said

  1060. to them,

  1061. I and my

  1062. people have

  1063. a great

  1064. dispute with

  1065. the Ammonites.

  1066. And when I

  1067. called you,

  1068. you did not

  1069. save me from

  1070. their hand.

  1071. And when I

  1072. saw that you

  1073. would not

  1074. save me,

  1075. I took my

  1076. life in my

  1077. hands and

  1078. crossed over

  1079. against the

  1080. Ammonites,

  1081. and the Lord

  1082. gave them

  1083. into my

  1084. hand.

  1085. Why then

  1086. have you

  1087. come up to

  1088. me to

  1089. fight against

  1090. me?

  1091. Then Jephthah

  1092. gathered all

  1093. the men of

  1094. Gilead and

  1095. fought with

  1096. Ephraim.

  1097. And the men

  1098. of Gilead

  1099. struck Ephraim

  1100. because they

  1101. said,

  1102. you are

  1103. fugitives

  1104. of Ephraim,

  1105. you Gileadites,

  1106. in the midst

  1107. of Ephraim

  1108. of Manasseh.

  1109. Okay,

  1110. now,

  1111. I know this

  1112. is really

  1113. unfamiliar.

  1114. Let me

  1115. help us

  1116. get into

  1117. this just

  1118. for a

  1119. moment.

  1120. We're

  1121. going to

  1122. find in

  1123. our story

  1124. in chapter

  1125. 11 that

  1126. Jephthah is

  1127. driven out

  1128. of his

  1129. home,

  1130. he's driven

  1131. out of his

  1132. tribe,

  1133. he's driven

  1134. away from

  1135. Israel,

  1136. he has to

  1137. go live

  1138. in a

  1139. distant

  1140. land,

  1141. okay,

  1142. because of

  1143. some family

  1144. tension that's

  1145. taking place,

  1146. he's welcomed

  1147. back.

  1148. So,

  1149. he's a

  1150. fugitive,

  1151. as it were,

  1152. he's a

  1153. refugee,

  1154. as it were,

  1155. who's been

  1156. pushed out

  1157. of his

  1158. own tribe,

  1159. and that's

  1160. how the

  1161. Ephraimites

  1162. are weaponizing

  1163. this conflict

  1164. against Jephthah.

  1165. You're a

  1166. fugitive of

  1167. Ephraim,

  1168. Jephthah.

  1169. You're worthless.

  1170. You are

  1171. homeless.

  1172. You bring

  1173. nothing to

  1174. the table.

  1175. And of

  1176. course,

  1177. that amplified

  1178. Jephthah's

  1179. heart and

  1180. becomes the

  1181. very motivation

  1182. that Jephthah

  1183. is this

  1184. personal

  1185. vendetta,

  1186. he's going

  1187. after the

  1188. Ephraimites.

  1189. You are

  1190. fugitives of

  1191. Ephraim,

  1192. this name

  1193. calling.

  1194. And Jephthah

  1195. wants to

  1196. demonstrate who's

  1197. really in

  1198. charge.

  1199. So we get

  1200. to verse 5

  1201. of chapter 12.

  1202. The Gileonites

  1203. captured the

  1204. fords of the

  1205. Jordan against

  1206. the Ephraimites.

  1207. And when any

  1208. of the fugitives

  1209. of Ephraim said,

  1210. let me go over,

  1211. the men of

  1212. Gilead said,

  1213. are you an

  1214. Ephraimite?

  1215. When he said

  1216. no,

  1217. they said to

  1218. him,

  1219. then say

  1220. Shibboleth.

  1221. And he said

  1222. Sibboleth,

  1223. for he could

  1224. not pronounce

  1225. it right.

  1226. Then they

  1227. seized him

  1228. and slaughtered

  1229. him at the

  1230. fords of

  1231. Jordan.

  1232. At the time

  1233. 42,000 of

  1234. the Ephraimites

  1235. fell.

  1236. Jephthah

  1237. judged Israel

  1238. six years.

  1239. Then Jephthah,

  1240. the Gileadite,

  1241. died and was

  1242. buried in his

  1243. city in Gilead.

  1244. You see the

  1245. brutality?

  1246. You see the

  1247. vendela?

  1248. It's all about

  1249. name calling.

  1250. And Jephthah,

  1251. instead of helping

  1252. to tamp down

  1253. the conflict,

  1254. elevates the

  1255. conflict and he's

  1256. like, okay,

  1257. you're going to

  1258. call me a

  1259. fugitive?

  1260. I'm going to

  1261. make you a

  1262. fugitive.

  1263. He separates

  1264. the army.

  1265. He scatters

  1266. them.

  1267. And in the

  1268. midst of him

  1269. conquering the

  1270. people, he

  1271. sets up this

  1272. little test.

  1273. Because the

  1274. Ephraimites

  1275. could not say

  1276. Shibboleth,

  1277. they said

  1278. Sibboleth.

  1279. And so what

  1280. does he do?

  1281. He slaughters

  1282. 42,000 of his

  1283. own people,

  1284. the Ephraimites.

  1285. All because of

  1286. name calling.

  1287. This is the

  1288. heart.

  1289. This is the

  1290. Romans' one

  1291. heart, I might

  1292. say, of

  1293. Jephthah coming

  1294. through.

  1295. It's reached its

  1296. climax.

  1297. It's come right

  1298. out into the

  1299. open.

  1300. It's as clear

  1301. as can be.

  1302. And so this is

  1303. how we're meant

  1304. to interpret the

  1305. scene that we see

  1306. in Judges

    Judges 11 chapter mention

  1307. chapter 11.

  1308. When we come to

  1309. the story of

  1310. Jephthah in

  1311. Judges chapter

    Judges 11 chapter mention

  1312. 11, we need to

  1313. see it in the

  1314. framework of

  1315. his life, the

  1316. true nature of

  1317. Jephthah coming

  1318. through.

  1319. Jephthah is

  1320. showing this

  1321. heart of murder

  1322. and strife and

  1323. brutality and

  1324. maliciousness that

  1325. all calls back to

  1326. Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  1327. Every single one

  1328. of those terms

  1329. being used there

  1330. to describe the

  1331. baseness of

  1332. humanity following

  1333. after their own

  1334. desires, doing

  1335. what's right in

  1336. our own eyes

  1337. rather than

  1338. following God's

  1339. compass.

  1340. And throughout

  1341. the entirety of

  1342. the course of

  1343. events of

  1344. Jephthah's life,

  1345. what stands

  1346. through it all

  1347. is that God

  1348. is silent.

  1349. Not once in

  1350. the narrative of

  1351. Judges, Judges

  1352. 11 or Judges

  1353. 12, will God

  1354. ever speak.

  1355. The silence is

  1356. deafening.

  1357. It helps us to

  1358. know that God

  1359. is present.

  1360. He has an

  1361. opinion, but

  1362. he's silent.

  1363. So now we

  1364. turn to Judges

    Judges 11 chapter mention

  1365. chapter 11.

  1366. I need to work

  1367. through this

  1368. quickly for us.

  1369. But I want you

  1370. to see that

  1371. Jephthah is a

  1372. product of his

  1373. own culture.

  1374. He's a product

  1375. of his culture.

  1376. This didn't

  1377. happen out of

  1378. the blue.

  1379. This happened

  1380. through conditioning.

  1381. This happened

  1382. because God had

  1383. warned the people

  1384. that the nations

  1385. would be a snare.

  1386. And so as we

  1387. make our way to

  1388. this time in the

  1389. timeline of the

  1390. Judges, that's

  1391. exactly what we

  1392. see.

  1393. They have been

  1394. ensnared.

  1395. They've been

  1396. captured.

  1397. They've been

  1398. polluted.

  1399. They've been

  1400. corrupted by

  1401. culture.

  1402. And so everything

  1403. they do is kind

  1404. of embedded in

  1405. and guided by

  1406. that spirit of

  1407. the culture.

  1408. The crisis that

  1409. we see in

  1410. Judges chapter

    Judges 10 chapter mention

  1411. 10 has actually

  1412. created the man.

  1413. This crisis has

  1414. created the man.

  1415. In Judges

    Judges 10:9

  1416. chapter 10

  1417. verse 9 we

  1418. see the

  1419. Ammonites,

  1420. they cross the

  1421. Jordan to

  1422. fight against

  1423. Judah and

  1424. against Benjamin

  1425. and against

  1426. the house of

  1427. Ephraim so

  1428. that Israel was

  1429. severely distressed.

  1430. So this conflict

  1431. is now coming

  1432. close.

  1433. What is Israel

  1434. going to do now

  1435. that conflict has

  1436. come?

  1437. Are they going to

  1438. turn to God

  1439. like they did in

  1440. Judges chapter 1?

    Judges 1 chapter mention

  1441. Are they going to

  1442. look to God,

  1443. raise up a leader?

  1444. No.

  1445. They turn inward.

  1446. We find that in

  1447. verses 17 and

  1448. 18 the Ammonites

  1449. were called to

  1450. arms and they

  1451. encamped in

  1452. Gilead.

  1453. The people of

  1454. Israel came

  1455. together and

  1456. they encamped

  1457. in Mizpah.

  1458. And the people,

  1459. the leaders of

  1460. Gilead said to

  1461. one another,

  1462. who is the man

  1463. who will begin

  1464. to fight against

  1465. the Ammonites?

  1466. He shall be head

  1467. over all the

  1468. inhabitants of

  1469. Gilead.

  1470. Rather than

  1471. look to God,

  1472. they looked

  1473. within.

  1474. They looked

  1475. to themselves.

  1476. They looked to

  1477. appoint a leader

  1478. among them.

  1479. And rather than

  1480. recognizing leadership

  1481. qualities like

  1482. we're trying to

  1483. do in this

  1484. nomination process

  1485. for deacons in

  1486. our church right

  1487. now, rather than

  1488. look for qualified

  1489. men, they're

  1490. looking for

  1491. volunteers.

  1492. And how are

  1493. they going about

  1494. it?

  1495. Do you notice

  1496. their strategy?

  1497. They're using a

  1498. certain collateral.

  1499. They're using a

  1500. certain compensation.

  1501. They're using a

  1502. certain incentive.

  1503. If you're going

  1504. to be head over

  1505. us, we will then

  1506. make you our

  1507. leader.

  1508. They're

  1509. incentivizing

  1510. headship because

  1511. that is what's

  1512. appealing to this

  1513. crowd now.

1514. Who wants to be a

  1515. leader?

  1516. We'll make you

  1517. head.

  1518. Just help fight

  1519. our battles for

  1520. us.

  1521. And this Hebrew

  1522. word for head,

  1523. we only saw it

  1524. once before Gideon.

  1525. And then in

  1526. Gideon's story, we

  1527. see it six times.

  1528. In Abimelech's story,

  1529. we see it nine

  1530. times.

  1531. And then from this

  1532. point on, we're

  1533. going to see the

  1534. word head being

  1535. used ten times in

  1536. our text.

  1537. Because it's the

  1538. new collateral.

  1539. It's the new

  1540. compensation.

  1541. It's the new

  1542. thing that's going

  1543. to attract the

  1544. kind of leadership

  1545. that Israel is

  1546. looking for.

  1547. And being the

  1548. head is now this

  1549. compensation, this

  1550. incentive for this

  1551. self-styled

  1552. leadership.

  1553. Then we can

  1554. enter the story

  1555. of Jephthah in

  1556. Judges chapter 11

    Judges 11:1–3

  1557. verses 1 to 3.

  1558. It says, now

  1559. Jephthah the

  1560. Gilead was a

  1561. mighty warrior.

  1562. Now that's a

  1563. fascinating word,

  1564. mighty warrior.

  1565. It is the exact

  1566. same two Hebrew

  1567. words that Gideon

  1568. has called the

  1569. mighty man of

  1570. valor.

  1571. The same two

  1572. Hebrew words used

  1573. of Jephthah.

  1574. And we're to be

  1575. reminded of how

  1576. God raised up that

  1577. leader.

  1578. We're to be

  1579. reminded of what

  1580. God did through

  1581. that leader.

  1582. And now Jephthah

  1583. is following a

  1584. whole new strategy.

  1585. So he was a

  1586. mighty warrior, but

1587. he was the son of

  1588. a prostitute.

  1589. That was a

  1590. problem.

  1591. And Gilead was

  1592. the father of

  1593. Jephthah.

  1594. Gilead's wife also

  1595. bore him sons.

  1596. And when his

  1597. wife's sons grew

  1598. up, they drove

  1599. Jephthah out and

  1600. said to him, you

  1601. shall not have an

  1602. inheritance in our

  1603. father's house, for

1604. you are the son of

  1605. another woman.

  1606. Then Jephthah fled

  1607. from his brothers,

  1608. lived in the land

  1609. of Tob, and

  1610. worthless fellows

  1611. collected around

  1612. Jephthah and went

  1613. out with him.

  1614. He's known as this

  1615. mighty warrior.

  1616. And because of his

  1617. father's indiscretion,

  1618. because of his

  1619. father, his

  1620. immoral practice,

  1621. the brothers of

  1622. Jephthah will then

  1623. make Jephthah a

  1624. fugitive.

  1625. They will throw

  1626. him out of the

  1627. house.

  1628. The inheritance

  1629. that would have

  1630. been his is now

  1631. abandoned.

  1632. So where does he

  1633. have to go?

  1634. He goes into this

  1635. land of Tob, which

  1636. is about a day's

  1637. journey away from

  1638. Gilead.

  1639. It's out in no

  1640. man's land, as it

  1641. were.

  1642. And that's where he

  1643. needs to now build

  1644. his own credentials,

  1645. his own reputation.

  1646. He needs to exert

  1647. himself and develop

  1648. his man of valor

  1649. reputation.

  1650. And that's what he

  1651. does.

  1652. Tob was to the

  1653. north, east of

  1654. Gilead.

  1655. He's in no man's

  1656. land.

  1657. He attracts to

  1658. himself worthless

  1659. fellows, it says.

  1660. These are outcasts,

  1661. homeless men.

  1662. Of course, it's a

  1663. reminder to the same

  1664. kind of men that

  1665. Abimelech gathered

  1666. around himself,

  1667. worthless fellows.

1668. They seem to find a

  1669. common bond, a

  1670. common status

  1671. together.

  1672. And Jephthah has an

  1673. enterprising spirit.

  1674. He gains a

  1675. reputation.

  1676. He gathers men

  1677. around him.

  1678. He gains this

  1679. reputation, this

  1680. reputation of being

  1681. a mighty warrior.

  1682. Well, how do you

  1683. get a reputation of

  1684. being a mighty

  1685. warrior?

  1686. Well, you war,

  1687. right?

  1688. You raid, you

  1689. battle, you

  1690. threaten.

  1691. Violence now

  1692. becomes your

  1693. tool to exert

  1694. yourself over

  1695. whoever is in

  1696. your way.

  1697. And that's the

  1698. reputation that

  1699. Jephthah will

  1700. then begin to

  1701. have, not only

  1702. in the land of

  1703. Tob, but also in

  1704. the expanses of

  1705. the region of

  1706. Gilead.

  1707. To the extent

  1708. that we find in

  1709. Judges chapter

    Judges 11:4–6

  1710. 11 verses 4 to

  1711. 6, that after a

  1712. time the Ammonites

  1713. made war against

  1714. Israel, and when

  1715. the Ammonites made

  1716. war against Israel,

  1717. the elders of

  1718. Gilead, they

  1719. went to bring

  1720. Jephthah from

  1721. the land of

  1722. Tob.

  1723. And they said to

  1724. Jephthah, come

  1725. and be our

  1726. leader that we

  1727. may fight against

  1728. the Ammonites.

  1729. Now there's a

  1730. little nuance here

  1731. in the text, it's

1732. hard to pick up on.

  1733. If you remember

  1734. going back to

  1735. chapter 10, they

  1736. promised that the

  1737. person who would

  1738. conquer for them

  1739. would be their

  1740. head, and now

  1741. they bring Jephthah

  1742. close, and they

  1743. take it a step

  1744. down, not be our

  1745. head, but why

  1746. not just be our

  1747. commander, our

  1748. leader of this

  1749. military campaign.

  1750. Now this becomes

  1751. an opportunity for

  1752. Jephthah.

  1753. Jephthah is going

  1754. to capitalize on

  1755. this opportunity to

  1756. make sure that he

  1757. gets what he has

  1758. coming to him.

  1759. He says in

  1760. verse 7,

  1761. Jephthah said to

  1762. the elders of

  1763. Gilead, did you

  1764. not hate me and

1765. drive me out of my

  1766. father's house?

  1767. Why have you come

  1768. to me now when

  1769. you are in distress?

  1770. And now this

  1771. turn, and the

  1772. elders of Gilead

  1773. said to Jephthah,

  1774. well that's why we

  1775. have turned to you

  1776. now, that you may

  1777. go and fight with

  1778. us and be our

  1779. head.

  1780. Notice how that's

  1781. changed.

  1782. The reader has

  1783. learned this

  1784. Abimelech style

  1785. of negotiating.

  1786. And Jephthah does

  1787. what's natural for

  1788. him.

  1789. He begins to

  1790. position himself.

  1791. He's capitalizing

  1792. on the opportunity.

  1793. He's taking

  1794. advantage of the

  1795. conditions and he's

  1796. vying for power.

  1797. So Jephthah will

  1798. then negotiate

  1799. terms.

  1800. Terms of a

  1801. treaty, a pact

  1802. between he and

  1803. these elders of

  1804. Gilead.

  1805. And then what

  1806. we'll find in

  1807. verses 9 to

  1808. 11 is this

  1809. pact, this

  1810. treaty that

  1811. has been

  1812. established by

  1813. Jephthah and

  1814. these human

  1815. leaders now

  1816. become kind of

  1817. a pact.

  1818. They're going to

  1819. call God down

  1820. to watch and

  1821. to ensure that

  1822. their agreement

  1823. among one

  1824. another is now

  1825. something that

  1826. God has to

  1827. codify.

  1828. Jephthah is a

  1829. man of his

  1830. culture.

  1831. Next we see

  1832. that Jephthah

  1833. seeks to secure

  1834. what God has

  1835. already promised.

  1836. This is perhaps

  1837. the most alarming

  1838. of all.

  1839. He seeks to

  1840. secure what God

  1841. has already

  1842. promised.

  1843. And I want to

  1844. move through this

  1845. quickly.

  1846. We begin to

  1847. read Jephthah's

  1848. story and what

  1849. stands out as you

  1850. read through this

  1851. is the name

  1852. Yahweh that

  1853. shows up 14

  1854. times throughout

  1855. this chapter.

  1856. 14 times the

  1857. name of the

  1858. Lord is used.

  1859. Capital L,

  1860. capital O,

  1861. capital R,

  1862. capital D.

  1863. That's the name

  1864. Yahweh, the

  1865. covenant keeping

  1866. God.

  1867. And Jephthah and

  1868. the people are

  1869. free to use

  1870. this divine

  1871. name.

  1872. But don't be

  1873. mistaken.

  1874. When they speak

  1875. of the name of

  1876. the Lord, they

  1877. may invoke the

  1878. name of the

  1879. Lord, but their

  1880. worship is entirely

  1881. other than the

  1882. name of the

  1883. Lord.

  1884. Because their

  1885. hearts are so

  1886. bent, their

  1887. hearts are so

  1888. twisted away from

  1889. God.

  1890. The first three

  1891. instances that we

  1892. see of the

  1893. divine name in

  1894. verses 9 and

  1895. then 10 and

  1896. then 11 is

  1897. this pact that's

  1898. negotiated between

  1899. people and then

1900. God has to be the

  1901. one to validate

  1902. it in their

  1903. minds.

  1904. The next couple

  1905. of times where

  1906. the name of the

  1907. Lord is used,

  1908. Jephthah is

  1909. talking and

  1910. speaking with

  1911. negotiating with

  1912. the king of

  1913. the Ammonites.

  1914. And what's

  1915. telling about his

  1916. negotiation process

  1917. is what we find

  1918. in verse 24.

  1919. Judges 11, 23 and

  1920. 24.

  1921. See if you can

  1922. pick up on the

  1923. theological and

  1924. doctrinal error

  1925. in Jephthah's

  1926. mind.

  1927. He says,

  1928. speaking to the

  1929. king of the

  1930. Ammonites,

  1931. so then the

  1932. Lord, the God

  1933. of Israel

  1934. dispossessed the

  1935. Ammonites from

  1936. before his people,

  1937. Israel.

  1938. And are you to

  1939. take possession of

  1940. them?

  1941. Will you not

  1942. possess what

  1943. Chemosh, your

  1944. God, gives to

  1945. you to possess?

  1946. And although the

  1947. Lord, our God,

  1948. has dispossessed

  1949. before us, we

  1950. will possess.

  1951. Can you see the

  1952. theological trouble

  1953. in verse 24?

  1954. Can you see the

  1955. doctrinal error that

  1956. Jephthah is exposing

  1957. there?

  1958. Who does he assign

  1959. the territory of

  1960. the Ammonites?

  1961. How did they get

  1962. it?

  1963. Who gave it to

  1964. them?

  1965. In Jephthah's

  1966. discourse, the

  1967. gods of Chemosh

  1968. gave it to them.

  1969. But we know

  1970. better.

  1971. Because Yahweh,

  1972. the Lord, is the

  1973. one who is

  1974. sovereign over

  1975. nations.

  1976. He is the one

  1977. who dispossesses.

  1978. He is the one

  1979. who grants.

  1980. And so the

  1981. theological issues

  1982. in Jephthah's

  1983. heart and mind

  1984. are even embedded

  1985. in his own

  1986. sentence, his

  1987. own resistance

  1988. to the kings

  1989. of the Ammonites.

  1990. He demonstrates

  1991. an awareness of

  1992. Yahweh.

  1993. But he also

  1994. recognizes, we

  1995. see through his

  1996. discourse, the

  1997. deep theological

  1998. errors that are

  1999. also there.

  2000. Then we come to

  2001. verse 29.

  2002. And this is the

  2003. most troubling of

  2004. all.

  2005. It says,

  2006. Then the spirit

  2007. of the Lord was

  2008. upon Jephthah.

  2009. And he passed

  2010. through Gilead and

  2011. Manasseh.

  2012. And he passed

  2013. on to Mizpah of

  2014. Gilead.

  2015. And from Mizpah of

  2016. Gilead he passed

  2017. on to the Ammonites.

  2018. And Jephthah made

  2019. a vow to the

  2020. Lord and said,

  2021. If you will give

  2022. the Ammonites

  2023. into my hands,

  2024. then whatever

  2025. comes out from

  2026. the doors of

  2027. my house to

  2028. meet me when I

  2029. return in peace

  2030. from the Ammonites

  2031. shall be the

  2032. Lord's and I

  2033. will offer it

  2034. for a burnt

  2035. offering.

  2036. The Ammonite

  2037. king would not

  2038. listen to the

  2039. discourse, the

  2040. negotiating power

  2041. of Jephthah.

  2042. He would not

  2043. listen.

  2044. So Jephthah goes

  2045. through Gilead and

  2046. through Manasseh to

  2047. recruit troops.

  2048. That's what we

  2049. find.

  2050. And we find that

  2051. what enabled his

  2052. success in verse

  2053. 29 is the spirit

  2054. of the Lord was

  2055. upon Jephthah.

  2056. God graciously

  2057. allowed Jephthah

  2058. to enjoy success

  2059. but I'm convinced

  2060. that Jephthah was

  2061. totally oblivious

  2062. to God's work.

  2063. Why?

  2064. Because Jephthah

  2065. had operated this

  2066. way from the

  2067. beginning.

  2068. Jephthah had

  2069. recruited the

  2070. troops in Tob.

  2071. Jephthah had

  2072. established his

  2073. reputation.

  2074. Jephthah had

  2075. made a name

  2076. for himself.

  2077. Jephthah had

  2078. exerted power.

  2079. Jephthah had

  2080. become the

  2081. mighty man of

  2082. valor in Tob.

  2083. Jephthah was

  2084. then negotiating

  2085. terms with the

  2086. elders of Gilead.

  2087. Jephthah is now

  2088. placed as the

  2089. head over the

  2090. nation.

  2091. And all of

  2092. that was also

  2093. by the spirit of

  2094. the Lord.

  2095. Just not named.

  2096. Because God is

  2097. over all these

  2098. things.

  2099. And I believe

  2100. Jephthah is

  2101. totally oblivious

  2102. to the success

  2103. that God is

  2104. granting him.

  2105. But the one

  2106. who's writing

  2107. the story

  2108. wants us not

  2109. to forget.

  2110. This is not

  2111. because Jephthah

  2112. was particularly

  2113. gifted in

  2114. negotiation.

  2115. It was because

  2116. God graciously

  2117. allowed him to

  2118. enjoy success.

  2119. Jephthah was

  2120. totally oblivious

  2121. and that's why

  2122. we find in

  2123. verse 30

  2124. what Jephthah

  2125. will do.

  2126. Jephthah makes

  2127. a vow to

  2128. the Lord.

  2129. A vow that

  2130. was completely

  2131. unnecessary.

  2132. But a vow that

  2133. we're going to

  2134. find, we don't

  2135. have time,

  2136. a vow that as

  2137. we look deeper

  2138. into the

  2139. scripture we find

  2140. that it was

  2141. laden with

  2142. Baal logic.

  2143. It was the

  2144. kind of

  2145. negotiation

  2146. that the

  2147. nations would

  2148. do with their

  2149. deities.

  2150. We will offer

  2151. you the greatest

  2152. token of our

  2153. sacrifices, the

  2154. greatest gifts

  2155. that we have to

  2156. give, the

  2157. greatest tokens

  2158. of our dedication

  2159. to you and

  2160. based upon that

  2161. you need to

  2162. pay me off.

  2163. Pay me off

  2164. with success

  2165. over this

  2166. enemy.

  2167. That's the

  2168. Baal logic

  2169. that now

  2170. he's employing

  2171. on a greater

  2172. scale.

  2173. And now it

  2174. becomes very

  2175. personal.

  2176. Very personal.

  2177. Because now

  2178. whatever will

  2179. come out of

  2180. his house to

  2181. meet him, he

  2182. will offer as

  2183. a burnt

  2184. offering.

  2185. He's willing to

  2186. lay down at

  2187. least a member

  2188. of his family.

  2189. You see,

  2190. Jephthah is

  2191. still negotiating.

  2192. He's still

  2193. securing.

  2194. He's still

  2195. manipulating God

  2196. and seeking to

  2197. wrest concessions

  2198. and favors

  2199. from God

  2200. like he had

  2201. from the

  2202. Gileadites

  2203. and from

  2204. the Ammonites.

  2205. He is still

  2206. operating underneath

  2207. the same

  2208. pattern of

  2209. life.

  2210. I will do

  2211. whatever sacrifice

  2212. I need to do

  2213. in order to get

  2214. what I think

  2215. I need to get.

  2216. And if he was

  2217. aware of the

  2218. Spirit at all,

  2219. he would never

  2220. have to make

  2221. this vow.

  2222. Because he

  2223. was trying

  2224. to secure

  2225. what God

  2226. had already

  2227. graciously

  2228. handed to him.

  2229. The Spirit of the

  2230. Lord was

  2231. on him.

  2232. And God

  2233. was going

  2234. to give

  2235. them victory.

  2236. But Jephthah

  2237. is totally

  2238. oblivious.

  2239. We find

  2240. this three-linked

  2241. chain

  2242. through this

  2243. discourse.

  2244. We see

  2245. that Jephthah

  2246. is negotiating

  2247. with the

  2248. Gileadites

  2249. and he gets

  2250. all that he

  2251. wants.

  2252. Then he

  2253. negotiates

  2254. with the

  2255. Ammonites

  2256. and at least

  2257. he gets

  2258. a response

  2259. but their

  2260. response is

  2261. not favorable.

  2262. Then he

  2263. negotiates

  2264. with God

  2265. and God

  2266. is utterly

  2267. silent.

  2268. He's silent.

  2269. And we

  2270. find from

  2271. Jephthah's

  2272. story,

  2273. God does

  2274. graciously

  2275. give him

  2276. victory.

  2277. But then

  2278. in chapter

  2279. 11 verse

  2280. 34,

  2281. then Jephthah

  2282. came to

  2283. his home

  2284. at Mizpah

  2285. and behold

  2286. his daughter

  2287. came out

  2288. to meet him

  2289. with tambourines

  2290. and with

  2291. dances.

  2292. And then

  2293. this,

  2294. she was

  2295. his,

  2296. what do you

  2297. see?

  2298. She was

  2299. his only

  2300. child.

  2301. Because

  2302. besides her

  2303. he had

  2304. neither son

  2305. nor daughter.

  2306. And we've

  2307. just learned

  2308. from chapter

  2309. 10 that

  2310. the gods

  2311. of the

  2312. nations had

  2313. embedded

  2314. themselves in

  2315. the culture

  2316. and particularly

  2317. the gods

  2318. of Moab

  2319. and the gods

  2320. of Ammon

  2321. which engaged

  2322. in child

  2323. sacrifice.

  2324. this

  2325. narrative

  2326. clue

  2327. is not

  2328. a coincidence.

  2329. I'm

  2330. convinced

  2331. that Jephthah

  2332. knew exactly

  2333. what the

  2334. conditions

  2335. of his

  2336. vow

  2337. would lead

  2338. to.

  2339. It was

  2340. going to

  2341. lead to

  2342. a sacrifice

  2343. of his

  2344. one

  2345. and only

  2346. daughter.

  2347. But it

  2348. was worth

  2349. the cost

  2350. in this

  2351. Baal-like

  2352. mindset,

  2353. his logic.

  2354. What do

  2355. I need

  2356. to do

  2357. to barter

  2358. with God

  2359. to get

  2360. what I

  2361. need?

  2362. How do

  2363. I go

  2364. about

  2365. securing

  2366. a victory?

  2367. If Jephthah

  2368. had known

  2369. the law,

  2370. he would

  2371. have known

  2372. that there

  2373. are ways

  2374. not to get

  2375. around the

  2376. law but

  2377. to work

  2378. within the

  2379. law to

  2380. remove

  2381. these rash

  2382. vows.

  2383. From Leviticus

    Leviticus 27 chapter mention

  2384. chapter 27

  2385. or maybe

  2386. even in

  2387. laying down

  2388. his own

  2389. life for

  2390. the sake

  2391. of his

  2392. daughter.

  2393. But what

  2394. he ends

  2395. up finding

  2396. is this

  2397. greatest

  2398. victory

  2399. becomes

  2400. his

  2401. greatest

  2402. defeat.

  2403. I wonder

  2404. how many

  2405. times we

  2406. do that

  2407. the same

  2408. thing to

  2409. God.

  2410. I wonder

  2411. how many

  2412. times we

  2413. use God's

  2414. name

  2415. but it's

  2416. only a

  2417. facade for

  2418. doing what

  2419. we really

  2420. want to

  2421. do.

  2422. I wonder

  2423. how many

  2424. times we

  2425. say,

  2426. well,

  2427. let me

  2428. pray about

  2429. this.

  2430. Let me

  2431. see what

  2432. God has

  2433. to say

  2434. about this.

  2435. I want

  2436. to consult

  2437. the Lord

  2438. on this.

  2439. And then

  2440. what we

  2441. come back

  2442. with is,

  2443. well,

  2444. I really

  2445. feel like

  2446. God wants

  2447. me to

  2448. do X,

  2449. Y,

  2450. or Z.

  2451. We use

  2452. the name

  2453. of God

  2454. but we

  2455. have never

  2456. consulted

  2457. God.

  2458. We have

  2459. never prayed

  2460. to God.

  2461. We have

  2462. never run

  2463. to his

  2464. word.

  2465. We've

  2466. never

  2467. consulted

  2468. godly

  2469. individuals.

  2470. And so

  2471. we do

  2472. this little

  2473. bartering

  2474. that Jephthah

  2475. is doing.

  2476. How many

  2477. times have

  2478. we said,

  2479. God,

  2480. if you

  2481. just do

  2482. this for

  2483. me,

  2484. one more

  2485. thing,

  2486. then this

  2487. is what

  2488. I'll do

  2489. for you.

  2490. It's the

  2491. same spirit.

  2492. It's not

  2493. distant

  2494. way back

  2495. when,

  2496. when people

  2497. were corrupt,

  2498. when judges

  2499. ruled the

  2500. nation of

  2501. Israel.

  2502. No,

  2503. it is here.

  2504. It's present.

  2505. It's in us.

  2506. The same

  2507. spirit is

  2508. embedded in

  2509. every one

  2510. of our

  2511. hearts.

  2512. that we

  2513. use the

  2514. name of

  2515. the Lord

  2516. to actually

  2517. do the

  2518. very things

  2519. we want

  2520. to do

  2521. and not

  2522. the hard

  2523. things that

  2524. God calls

  2525. us to.

  2526. What's the

  2527. solution?

  2528. The solution

  2529. is the same

  2530. every time.

  2531. It's to

  2532. recognize the

  2533. problem in

  2534. us,

  2535. to confess

  2536. that sin,

  2537. but more

  2538. than just

  2539. giving lip

  2540. service to

  2541. confession

  2542. and recognizing

  2543. that there's a

  2544. problem and

  2545. wanting God to

  2546. fix those

  2547. problems so

  2548. that we can

  2549. move on with

  2550. life.

  2551. No,

  2552. it's coming

  2553. to a place

  2554. sincerely saying,

  2555. God,

  2556. I recognize

  2557. this problem

  2558. and I repent.

  2559. I turn away

  2560. from this issue

  2561. in my life

  2562. and I turn to

  2563. you.

  2564. Help the

  2565. word of God

  2566. to be central

  2567. in my focus.

  2568. Help it to be

  2569. the stabilizing

  2570. force guiding

  2571. my future.

  2572. And God,

  2573. do a work in

  2574. me to sanctify

  2575. me,

  2576. to cleanse

  2577. me from

  2578. all my

  2579. unrighteousness

  2580. so that my

  2581. life is

  2582. a figure

  2583. of the

  2584. wonder

  2585. of God's

  2586. forgiveness

  2587. and God's

  2588. work.

  2589. A trophy.

  2590. A trophy

  2591. to what God

  2592. wants to

  2593. really do.

  2594. That instead

  2595. of becoming

  2596. glory robbers,

  2597. we become

  2598. glory presenters.

  2599. Look at the

  2600. wonder of the

  2601. glory of God.

  2602. And so,

  2603. that's one of

  2604. the things that

  2605. we're going to

  2606. do right now

  2607. in baptism.

  2608. Kind of

  2609. setting the

  2610. work of God.

  2611. God is the

  2612. hero of our

  2613. stories.

  2614. And one of the

  2615. ways we get to

  2616. see that is

  2617. through baptism.

  2618. How God has

  2619. brought someone

  2620. to repentance

  2621. and the work

  2622. of Christ

  2623. in forgiveness

  2624. and raising

  2625. that individual

  2626. up to newness

  2627. of life.

  2628. That's already

  2629. happened,

  2630. but this is just

  2631. kind of a picture

  2632. of that work

  2633. of Christ

  2634. playing out.

  2635. Let me pray

  2636. for us.

  2637. We'll sing a song,

  2638. we'll do a

  2639. baptism,

  2640. and then we'll

  2641. dismiss.

  2642. Father, thank

  2643. you.

  2644. Thank you for

  2645. your patience

  2646. with us.

  2647. Thank you that

  2648. even when we

  2649. find ourselves

  2650. falling on our

  2651. faces again,

  2652. blowing it

  2653. again,

  2654. that you're

  2655. patient and

  2656. gracious,

  2657. and that if we

  2658. confess our sins,

  2659. that you are

  2660. faithful and

  2661. just to forgive

  2662. our sin,

  2663. and to cleanse

  2664. us from all

  2665. unrighteousness.

  2666. The things we

  2667. see and the

  2668. things we don't.

  2669. God, I pray

  2670. that our lives

  2671. would be a

  2672. trophy of your

  2673. grace,

  2674. and a trophy

  2675. of your power,

  2676. and a testimony

  2677. to your work

  2678. in our lives.

  2679. In Jesus' name,

  2680. amen.
