  1. We're going to read from God's Word reading tonight from John's

  2. Gospel chapter 1, John's Gospel chapter 1.

  3. We're going to read the first 18 verses, commonly known as the

  4. prologue to the Gospel, the Gospel according to Saint John

    John 1 chapter mention

  5. chapter 1. We'll read from verse one

  6. reading, of course, from the authorised version.

  7. The words will open screen for those online and pray the Lord

  8. will bless those who join with us through the online streaming

  9. service. Let's hear God's word.

  10. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and

  11. the Word was God. The same was in the beginning

  12. with God. All things were made by Him, and

  13. without Him was not. Anything made that was made.

  14. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men, and the

  15. light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it

  16. not. There was a man sent from God

  17. whose name was John. The same came for a witness to

  18. bear witness of the light, that all men through him might

  19. believe. He was not that light, but was

  20. sent to bear witness of that Light.

  21. That was the true light which lighteth every man that cometh

  22. into the world. He was in the world, and the

  23. world was made by Him, and the world knew him not.

  24. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not, but as

  25. many as received Him. To them give thee power to

  26. become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name,

  27. which were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh,

  28. nor of the will of man, but of God.

  29. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld

  30. His glory. The glory is of the only

  31. begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

  32. John bear witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of

  33. whom I speak. He that cometh after me is

  34. preferred before me, for He was before me, and of His fullness

  35. of all we received, and grace for grace for the law was given

  36. by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

  37. No man has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son which is

  38. in the bosom of the Father, He have declared Him.

  39. Amen. Will no God will stamp with His

  40. own approval and blessing this reading of His own precious and

  41. infallible Word. My text this evening is taken

  42. from John chapter 1 and verse 4. And it says in Him was life and

    John 1 chapter mention

  43. the life was the light of man and have entitled the theme this

  44. evening. Christ is the Lord of life.

  45. See the apostle John here is led by the Holy Spirit to introduce

  46. the Lord Jesus to us in a very unique and wonderful way.

  47. When you read Matthew's account, when you read Luke, they begin

  48. with the genealogy of Christ in real time, how that Christ was

  49. in the line of David and Abraham and how he was the son of Adam.

  50. But John doesn't begin with a genealogy.

  51. John begins in eternity, and he presents us with a stunning

  52. portrait of who the Lord Jesus really is.

  53. It's interesting when you read the prologue, he doesn't mention

  54. him by name until you come to verse 17.

  55. Look at it there. Look what he says there, for the

  56. law was given by Moses, but great and grace and truth came

  57. by Jesus Christ. John rather than begin with the

  58. story of his birth, John takes us into eternity.

  59. John confronts us with one who coexists with the Father, one

  60. who is Co eternal, one who is Co equal.

  61. And Moses remember began writing in Genesis one-on-one.

  62. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

  63. Moses confronts us with the majesty and the might of God as

  64. creator and Maker. The word Elohim, from which we

  65. get the English word God, is a plural 9 and of course it

  66. indicates A Trinitarian person. The word Elohim literally means

  67. one who is all powerful in the beginning.

  68. God, What did he do? He created the heavens and the

  69. earth. And in the same way, John One

  70. and One confronts us with the majesty and knight of the Word.

  71. Listen to what he says. In the beginning was the Word,

  72. and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  73. The same was in the beginning with God.

  74. You see, John wants us to stand in awe of the one who's called

  75. the Word. The Word in the Greek means

  76. Logos, the one who shares the same substance as the Father,

  77. and yet the one who is separate and distinct from the Father,

  78. the one who's the second person of the whole eternity.

  79. As I've said, coequal, coeternal, and coexists.

  80. And this one that was called the Word was involved in creation.

  81. You see, in creation in the beginning, Christ was there.

  82. Christ predates the beginning, and Christ was active.

  83. Look at verse 3. All things were made by him and

  84. without him was not anything made that was made does not tie

  85. into what the apostle tells us there in the book of Colossians.

  86. It says in Colossians 115 who is the image of the invisible God,

  87. the first born of every creature.

  88. The word first born means the source for by Him we're all

  89. things created that are in heaven, that are in earth

  90. visible and invisible, whether they be Thrones or dominions or

  91. principalities or powers. All things were created by Him

  92. and for Him, and He is before all things and by Him all

  93. things. Consist is not tremendous.

  94. And over in the book of Hebrews we read in the book of Hebrews

  95. and Hebrews chapters 11 and verse 3, we read through faith.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  96. We understand that the world's were framed by the Word of God

  97. so that things which are seen were not made of things which do

  98. appear. Christ was there in the

  99. beginning. Christ was active.

  100. Christ's service involved the creation of the heavens and the

  101. earth as we know it out of nothing.

  102. It's important that you understand that before he made

  103. the sun, the moon, the stars, before there was one atom in the

  104. material universe, in the beginning, God, and in the

  105. beginning was this trinitarian relationship between Father, Son

  106. and Holy Spirit. And that relationship was more

  107. real and more than than things that are physical and things

  108. that are seen. We asked the question, who is

  109. He? And here's the answer.

  110. He was God manifest in the flesh.

  111. I've told you often from Timothy, it says in first

  112. Timothy 3 and verse 16. It makes a tremendous statement

  113. and without controversy. Great as the mystery of

  114. godliness, God was manifest in the flesh.

  115. The Word manifest here really stands out and it's it's

  116. tremendous to ponder that truth of the manifestation of Christ.

  117. It ties into John 1 and 14. In the beginning was the Word

  118. and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

  119. It ties into verse 14. And the Word was made flesh and

  120. dwelt among us, and we beheld as glory.

  121. The glory is of the only begotten of the Father, full of

  122. grace and truth. You see it as critical, it is

  123. foundational not only to the Christian faith but to your

  124. Christian life that you understand and embrace the truth

  125. that Jesus Christ is fully and truly God Incarnate, one of the

  126. old Anglican bishops, Bishop Mole, said.

  127. A saviour, not quite. God is like a bridge broken at

  128. the farther end. You see, if Jesus Christ is not

  129. God in the flesh, then we are still sinners without a Saviour.

  130. If Jesus Christ is only a man, then he died in his own sins,

  131. and we have no hope. But in order to save and

  132. reconcile sinful people to our holy God, Jesus Christ must be

  133. God in human flesh. And John wonderfully presents

  134. and displays in this prologue, John 11 to 18, a unique and

  135. wonderful picture of Christ. Jesus Christ is the eternal

  136. Word. Notice the Word was in existence

  137. never a time the Word was not in existence.

  138. And all heresies in the church usually involve denying the full

  139. deity and true humanity of the Lord Jesus.

  140. And that's where the dual witnesses are wrong.

  141. They follow a man called Arias. In the early centuries.

  142. Jesus Christ is also the second person of the Holy Trinity.

  143. And the Word was with God. With God means a compliment.

  144. With God means a relationship. The Lord Jesus existed in the

  145. closest possible relationship to the Father.

  146. Jesus Christ is truly and fully God, and the Word was God, not a

  147. God as the two witnesses allege. The Greek has no definite

  148. article. It's not.

  149. And the Word was the God it says, and the Word was God, a

  150. distinct person. Jesus Christ is the Word made

  151. flesh. Verse 14.

  152. Jesus Christ is the creator of everything.

  153. Jesus Christ is the one who reveals life.

  154. Jesus Christ is the one who's the light of God to the start

  155. world. Now this is a tremendous

  156. subject. I'm going to go to deal with one

  157. thing tonight and it's this. Christ is the Lord of life.

  158. Look again at verse 4. Very quickly in him was life and

  159. the life was the light of man. Three things very quickly.

  160. Think of the source of all true life.

  161. Jesus Christ is the source of all true life, life physically.

  162. The Bible says in Acts 1728. In Him you move and live and

  163. have your being. Every sail in our body has been

  164. created by His hand. In Psalm 104 and in the verse 30

  165. we read a very interesting statement.

  166. It says in Psalm 104 and in the verse 30, thou sendest forth thy

  167. spirit, they are created. Thou renewest the face of the

  168. earth. See everyone of us have a

  169. birthday, a day we're born. Everyone of us will have a deaf

  170. day. And between us, the journey of

  171. life and in relation to that journey, the life that we live,

  172. we live by the hand of God and the life that we have

  173. physically, Jesus Christ is the source of that life.

  174. Even the breath that the wicked breathe, Even those who live out

  175. a life of immorality and iniquity and idolatry, it's Him

  176. that gives them life. Can't see it, don't believe it,

  177. but it's nevertheless true. All men in Him live, all men in

  178. Him move, all men in Him have their being.

  179. It also is the source of all life material.

  180. He created the universe. We we read in Hebrews 11 verse

  181. three that by faith the heavens, the world's as we know them, are

  182. framed by the word of God. They spoke them into existence.

  183. The life of everything in the world that was made was not made

  184. without Jesus Christ. All things were made by Him and

  185. without Him was not anything made that was made life

  186. spiritually. The Bible teaches that you and I

  187. were dead in trespasses and sins, and you had the quickened

  188. who were dead in trespasses and sins.

  189. Ephesians 2 and one. We were blind.

  190. We couldn't see God, our spiritual truth, or even our own

  191. sin. We were diseased.

  192. We had no love and affection for God or the things of God.

  193. What do we need? We needed life.

  194. We were sinners, dead, blind and diseased.

  195. And he comes, and he implants life.

  196. He imparts life. He infuses life in the soul by

  197. the new birth, by His Spirit and the Word.

  198. What about life abundantly? He says, I'm come that you might

  199. have it, you might have life and you might have it more

  200. abundantly. It was coming through Belfast

  201. there at the Short Strand, and there's a string of cars, I

  202. don't know for what reason, And they're all seem to be going

  203. into the Odyssey buildings and there must be something on.

  204. And I was just thinking those people know nothing about life.

  205. They might think they have life, but they don't really, because

  206. abundant life is only found in Christ and life eternally.

  207. Remember what we read here in John chapter 3 and in the verse

    John 3 chapter mention

  208. 18. He that believeth on him has not

  209. condemned, but he that believeth not has condemned already,

  210. because he had not believed in the name of the only begotten

  211. Son of God. In John 3 and 36 we read He that

  212. believeth on the Son hath everlasting life, and he that

  213. believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God

  214. abideth in Him is He Jesus Christ as the eternally only

  215. begotten Son of God out of His infinite being we can discover

  216. this truth. In Him was life, and no matter

  217. what dimension you think about physical, material, spiritual,

  218. abundant or eternal, that life exists in Him.

  219. In Him is life is not what John says.

  220. John yes, in Him was life. True life is only possible in

  221. him. True life is only enjoyed in a

  222. relationship with him. Life comes from Him to us.

  223. True life is in Him. Without Him we are nothing.

  224. Oh, we might be religious, we might be respectable, we might

  225. reach out a helping hand to someone else, be kind to a

  226. fellow human, be a Good Samaritan.

  227. But those things will not redeem our souls.

  228. Those things will not rescue us from sin's power.

  229. Those things will not reconcile us to God.

  230. Only Christ is the true source of life in all of these areas,

  231. physical, material, spiritual, abundant and eternal.

  232. The source of all true life, John says in him, was life.

  233. I want you to get it. Not only the source of all true

  234. life, but the substance of all true life.

  235. You see John says in Him was life and the life was the light

  236. of man. The word life is used 36 times

  237. in John's gospel. And you see John was fully aware

  238. that the Lord Jesus gave his life for us.

  239. The Lord Jesus is the one who gave us life for us so that we

  240. could live and enjoy life in Him abundantly, spiritually and

  241. eternally, even physically. Paul says in 2nd Corinthians 9

  242. and 15. Thanks beyond the God for his

  243. unspeakable gift. The Lord Jesus is an amazing

  244. gift, wonderful gift. I want you to think for a few

  245. minutes of the purity of His life.

  246. Hebrews 7 talks about Christ as one who is wholly harmless and

  247. separate from sinners. He lived a life of complete

  248. purity. He did no sin.

  249. He knew no sin. In Him is no sin.

  250. He said, Which of you convince of me of sin?

  251. The Father said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I'm well

  252. pleased. He lived his life without sin,

  253. never sinned. In thought, word and deed, He

  254. lived the purity of life. Contrast to us, We are sinners,

  255. we're full of sin, we live in rebellion.

  256. Here's the life that He lived. He lived for us, lived it before

  257. the Father. He said, Which of you convinced

  258. of me of sin? Think of the purpose of his

  259. life. You see, as people about their

  260. life today, they they think of life and they think of it in

  261. this way. What does it mean?

  262. They have life. I want to tell you it's not

  263. about being rich. It's not about having a great

  264. job or being well educated or having power and influence or

  265. living like the king or doing great things and travelling the

  266. world. You see, those things in

  267. themselves are not necessarily wrong, but they do not give us

  268. the true meaning of life. They do not bring lasting

  269. happiness. The secret to life's meaning is

  270. found in a personal relationship with the God who made us.

  271. God loves you tonight in Christ. Romans 5:00 and 8:00 But God

  272. commendeth his love toward us. And while we were yet sinners,

  273. Christ stayed for us. John 3 and 16.

  274. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son,

  275. that whosoever believeth in them should not perish, but have

  276. everlasting life. Eternal life is only found in

  277. Him. And all of us have a sin problem

  278. and God is holy and God cannot and doesn't ignore sin.

  279. And God's answer was to say in Christ, the life, the light of

  280. men into the world, and what was his purpose?

  281. And all the way to Calvary, He who was born of the virgin, he

  282. was born to die. Think of His passion in life and

  283. His cross work as He was kneeled to the tree.

  284. He offered up himself for us. He was our substitute, took our

  285. place. He was our sacrifice.

  286. But this man, after he'd offered one sacrifice for sins forever,

  287. sat down in the right hand of God.

  288. He was our sin bearer. He was wounded for our

  289. transgressions, bruised for our iniquities.

  290. The chastisement of our peace was upon him.

  291. He was our surety. He paid the debt to the broken

  292. law. He not when He was our

  293. substitute and sacrifice and sin bearer and surety, but he also

  294. was the one who bore the wrath of God for us.

  295. Remember Paul says for he that is God made him, that is Christ

  296. to be sin for us who knew no sin that we might be made the

  297. righteousness of God in him. And on the cross his blood

  298. flowed fleeting on the cross He made an atonement.

  299. He wasn't a victim. He was a victor and then his

  300. voluntary sacrifice. He became the victorious Saviour

  301. because think of the power of life.

  302. He took life back. Yes, he died horrible death of

  303. crucifixion, but his death was not the end.

  304. Death could not fully bind him. He he triumphed over sin, hailed

  305. the grave and the devil. He opened a way to heaven.

  306. He's now there as the heavenly man.

  307. He's there now as our representative in glory.

  308. He now lives in the power of an endless life, and He's praying

  309. for us, and by His mighty power He can produce a new life in us.

  310. He can dispense grace and mercy to help in time of need.

  311. Help me Lord, what tremendous words you could pray in your

  312. difficulty, in your peon and your sorrow, whatever that is.

  313. You can turn to this one who had purity of life, who had a

  314. purpose and a mission because God sent him and a mission of

  315. mercy to seek in the sea of that which was lost.

  316. That's why he came and and he had such a passion for life that

  317. he wanted us to live in him so, so he gave up his life unto us.

  318. Remember Paul says the Son of God, he loved me and gave

  319. himself for me as our substitute sacrifice, sin bearer, surety,

  320. and the one who suffered the wrath of God on the tree.

  321. He's gone now to heaven. He's there preparing a place for

  322. us. He makes a pledge and a promise

  323. for those who are in Christ. He says to the Father that they

  324. may be with me where I am. Is that your assurance?

  325. Is that your joy? I want you to think as we close

  326. the secret of all true life, not just the source, not just the

  327. substance, but think of the secret.

  328. You see, Bible believe in Christianity is unique out of

  329. all the religions of the world. They want the children to study

  330. all the religions of the world. But I want to tell you the

  331. religions of the world are not on an equal footing, not on a

  332. par with Bible. Believe in Christianity because

  333. all the religions of the world follow the way of Cain and they

  334. try to do something to please God in meritus favour and God

  335. will be pleased with them. But Christianity is different

  336. because God became man. Emmanuel is God with us, and not

  337. only is he God with us, but in the new birth He's God in US.

  338. He is God for us. And the secret to having God

  339. with us and in US and for us is faith preached in this last

  340. Sunday night. For by grace you see it through

  341. faith and not, not of yourselves, not of works, lest

  342. any man should boast. Sister Cathy, if she's

  343. listening, God bless you. You sent me a wee message just

  344. last night, John 6 and 29. You didn't know what I was

  345. thinking about or preparing for Sunday evening service.

  346. This is what she sent. Jesus answered and said unto

  347. them, This is the work of God. What works God do you want me to

  348. do? This is the work of God that you

  349. believe on him whom he have sent.

  350. And the word believe means to trust and adhere to and rely on.

  351. You see, let me finish. There's many tonight in the

  352. world and they don't believe in God.

  353. They don't believe in existence. They have no interest in the

  354. knowledge of God. They live out their life very

  355. independently of God, lovers of themselves, no thought of sin or

  356. their soul. There's others who say, well,

  357. we're not like that. We're religious people and we we

  358. do believe in God, but we believe in pleasing that God by

  359. our own efforts, by being involved in our religion or or

  360. involved in our church. And we're attempting to work our

  361. way to be accepted by God. And there's many like that in

  362. Ulster tonight and beyond. But there's another group of

  363. people, and they're different because they not only believe

  364. that God exists and accept that all the propositions about the

  365. personal work of Christ, more than that they have come to that

  366. place in their life where they have trusted in Christ alone for

  367. salvation. This is the work of God that you

  368. believe on him whom he have said believe means to trust in, to

  369. adhere to and to rely on. It's like tar.

  370. It sticks. Remember a man in Coleraine

  371. Congregational Church emphasising that out of a big

  372. green Bible that he had and he used to sit it on his lap and

  373. teaches the word of God. And as a young convert, I was

  374. eager to learn. And Brother Raymond Hare, who's

  375. no doubt is in the glory now, he was very faithful in using the

  376. companion Bible and he had the word believe underlined.

  377. And I asked him one day what it really meant.

  378. And he said, well, David is like this.

  379. In the Amplified Bible, it says to trust in, adhere to and rely

  380. on. That's what believing in Jesus

  381. means, and that's the secret to life.

  382. Faith is the key. Abraham believed God, it was

  383. counted unto him for righteousness.

  384. Believed God not only existed, but all the fullness of his

  385. revelation, all the promises in thee and in thy seed shall all

  386. the world be blessed. And that seed was Christ.

  387. And the Lord Jesus said Abraham rejoice to see my day and sought

  388. and was glad he looked by faith to Christ.

  389. Are you looking to Christ? We were singing look, look, look

  390. and live. There is life for a look at the

  391. crucified one. There's life at this moment for

  392. thee. I quote the third verse before

  393. we finish. It's not thy tears or

  394. repentance, nor prayers, but the blood that atones for the soul

  395. on him then believe in a pardon receive for his blood.

  396. Can I make thee quite whole? Christ is the Lord of life.

  397. He's the source of it. All that we could feel the

  398. weight of that in Him was life, the life that we live day by

  399. day. He's the source of that life and

  400. every other area that I've mentioned, and the substance of

  401. that life is in Him. Was life the fullest expression

  402. of it? His person, His purity, his, His

  403. purpose, His passion, His power. It's all here and Him was life.

  404. And here's the secret to this life.

  405. Faith in him, trusting and hearing and relying in Christ.

  406. Which category of people expresses or explains you

  407. tonight? Are you among those that say I

  408. don't believe in God or believe God exists?
