  1. Praise the Lord. I'm going to read a few verses

  2. from John's gospel. John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  3. Let's hear the Word of God, John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  4. Gospel of John chapter 1 reading from verse one.

    John 1 chapter mention

  5. The words will come on screen for those online and we pray the

  6. Lord will bless them as they see and hear the word of God.

  7. We would encourage them if they want a Bible to contact us and

  8. we'll supply them with a Bible in the will of God.

  9. John chapter one verse one in the beginning was the Word and

  10. the Word was with God and the Word was God.

  11. The same was in the beginning with God.

  12. All things were made by him and without Him was not anything

  13. made that was made. And him was life.

  14. And the life was the light of man, and the light shineth in

  15. darkness and the darkness comprehended it not.

  16. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

  17. The same came for a witness to bear witness of the light, that

  18. all men through him might believe.

  19. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that

  20. light. That was the true light, which

  21. lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

  22. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the

  23. world knew him not. He came on to His own, and His

  24. own received Him not, but as many as received Him.

  25. To them give He power to become the sons of God, even to them

  26. that believe on His name, which were born not of blood, nor of

  27. the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

  28. And the world was made flesh and dwelt among us.

  29. We beheld His glory. The glory is of the only

  30. begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

  31. John bear witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of

  32. whom I speak. He that cometh after me is

  33. preferred before me, for He was before me, and of His fullness

  34. have all we received. And grace.

  35. For grace for the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth

  36. came by Jesus Christ. No man have seen God at any

  37. time. The only begotten Son, which is

  38. in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him.

  39. Amen. We know God, and stamp with His

  40. own approval and blessing this reading of the Holy Scripture.

  41. Now my text this evening is taken from John's Gospel chapter

  42. 1 verses 4:00 and 5:00. And it says in him was life, and

  43. the life was the light of man, and the light shineth in

  44. darkness and the darkness comprehended it not.

  45. Now this evening I want to try and deal with the theme Christ

  46. the Lord of Light in John. Chapter 1 verses 1 to 18 makes

    John 1:1–18

  47. for very interesting reading regarding the apostle John

  48. because he's introducing us to the Lord Jesus Christ and he

  49. wants us to teach us who he really is.

  50. I believe John is led by the Holy Spirit in a very unique and

  51. wonderful way, in contrast to Matthew and Luke, who begin with

  52. the genealogy of Christ in real time.

  53. They reveal that Jesus Christ is a real historical human figure,

  54. not a mythical figure. But John, in contrast, begins in

  55. eternity and he paints for us and presents a very stunning

  56. portrait of who the Lord Jesus Christ really is.

  57. We get asked the question, who is the Lord Jesus Christ?

  58. Well here's the answer. Jesus Christ is the eternal word

  59. verses one and two. In the beginning was the Word

  60. and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

  61. The same was in the beginning with God.

  62. The word was means he was already in existence.

  63. There never was a time when He was not in existence.

  64. He has no beginning. He has no end.

  65. And of course, I told you last week that all heresy and false

  66. religion and false cults and even false churches, one of

  67. their glaring errors is they deny the full essential and true

  68. deity of the Lord Jesus Christ as well as deny his essential

  69. and true humanity. And of course, the modern

  70. Jehovah Witnesses deny the true deity of Christ, just for one

  71. example. But Jesus Christ is also the

  72. second person of the Holy Trinity.

  73. Notice the words and the word was with God, with God speaks of

  74. a distinct, separate person with God, speaks of relationship,

  75. speaks of accompaniment, speaks of fellowship.

  76. See, the Word existed in the closest possible relationship

  77. with the Father. He is truly and fully God,

  78. coequal and coeternal, and coexists A distinct person.

  79. On top of that, the Lord Jesus Christ is also the creator of

  80. everything. Look at verse 3.

  81. All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything

  82. made that was made. We read in verse 14 that Jesus

  83. Christ is the Word made flesh, hears His incarnation and virgin

  84. birth, and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we

  85. beheld His glory. The glory is of the only

  86. begotten of the Father, full of grace and full of truth.

  87. But we also learnt last week that Jesus Christ is the true

  88. source of life. He says in the Scripture, in

  89. verse 4, in him was life, that is, life physically, life

  90. materially, life spiritually, life abundantly.

  91. Life eternally is not only the true source of life, but he's

  92. also the true substance of life or in Him is life.

  93. And we thought about the purity of his life, the purpose of his

  94. life, and the power of his life. I was on the cross.

  95. He gave up his life unto death and shed his precious blood.

  96. And let me close last, Lords, the evening with the secret of

  97. life. And I tried to tell you that

  98. faith is the key to believe that God is with us, Emmanuel, and

  99. it's God in US dwelling by his Spirit.

  100. And it's God for us on the journey and God working through

  101. us. I can do all things through

  102. Christ, which strengthens me. And one day he will take us.

  103. John says in six and 29. And this is the work of God,

  104. that you believe in him whom he have sent.

  105. Now tonight I want to move on. I want to deal with another

  106. truth here that's found about Christ.

  107. Christ is not only the Lord of life, but He's also the Lord of

  108. light. Three things now this evening in

  109. relation to this subject. Firstly, the truth about the

  110. light. Notice the words here.

  111. And the life was the light of man.

  112. Jesus Christ is saying his life. That's the whole of his life,

  113. His person and work, every aspect of his being.

  114. The whole reason for his existence is the light of man.

  115. Jesus Christ is the true source of light in the world, the true

  116. light that shines in a very Dark World.

  117. Old natural light, spiritual light, eternal light finds its

  118. source, finds its fulfilment in Him.

  119. Notice the words and the life was the light of man.

  120. Underline the word man. That's man created in the image

  121. of God. The light of man means that he

  122. is the revealer of the invisible God.

  123. He reveals God's person to us, He reveals.

  124. God's work, He reveals all that's invisible, the invisible

  125. and moral attributes of God, and through the Lord Jesus Christ we

  126. can discover something of God's eternal power in Godhead.

  127. That's why the psalmist said be still and know that I am God.

  128. God can be known. How can God be known?

  129. Because not only is there life in Jesus Christ, but in him that

  130. life is the light of man. He's not only the true source of

  131. true light in the world, and remember, there's no light

  132. without the true light, but he's also the sovereign light in the

  133. world. Notice it's the light of man.

  134. Man in stark contrast to the angels.

  135. You think of the angels who maintained their innocence and

  136. kept their glorious state, not a reference to fallen angels who

  137. sinned with Lucifer and LED a rebellion in heaven and are now

  138. reserved in change of darkness. It's not a reference to angels,

  139. not a reference to animals. Animals were made from the dust

  140. of the ground, but they weren't made in the image of God.

  141. Animals don't have immortal souls.

  142. Animals live and die. They have not the life of God in

  143. them, but it's the light of men. Men do have a soul.

  144. Men do live beyond the grave. Men are not like the animals who

  145. return to the dust and that's the end of them.

  146. No men have immortal souls. We read in Genesis chapter 2 and

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  147. in the verse 7A tremendous statement it says and the Lord

  148. God for man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his

  149. nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul.

  150. And the truth is that man is a living soul needs the light of

  151. Christ and the light of Christ is in the life of Christ and the

  152. life of Christ is the light of man because he's the true light

  153. that has come into the world and Christ is the true light stands

  154. in contrast to counterfeit light.

  155. Christ is the true light that has come into the world.

  156. We read there and John chapter one, verse 9, that the true

  157. light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

  158. You'll read in this passage that John the Baptist was sent as a

  159. witness to that light. John the Baptist was not not

  160. true light, but was sent as a witness of the light.

  161. Did you notice in the reading the reference to the capital L?

  162. Verse 7? The same came for a witness to

  163. bear witness of the light capital L, verse 8.

  164. He was not that light capital L, but was sent to bear witness of

  165. that light capital L. And of course in nine that was

  166. the true light, which lighteth every man that came into the

  167. world, again, a capital L. Notice the repetition.

  168. Now let's ask the question, how does the light work?

  169. How does the true light enlighten every man?

  170. Well, there's an answer. Doctor Martyn Lloyd Jones in one

  171. of his sermons in John One verse 5 suggests this by the light of

  172. general revelation of God in creation.

  173. Remember what we read in Romans chapter one verse 20.

  174. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world

  175. are clearly seen, being understood by things that are

  176. made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are

  177. without excuse. In other words, everything

  178. created in the universe teaches and testifies not only that God

  179. exists, but teaches and testifies something about His

  180. eternal power in Godhead, so that men are without excuse.

  181. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the earth showeth forth

  182. his hand work, the psalmist said.

  183. But also by the light of conscience, See, every one of us

  184. is a conscience. The conscience goes tick tock.

  185. The conscience teaches us all that's right and all that's

  186. wrong. It's a good guide.

  187. It's a reliable guide, not an infallible guide.

  188. But the light of conscience bears witness to all that is

  189. good and all that is true and all that is morally upright in

  190. the world. It also bears witness to all

  191. that is evil and wicked and bad in the world.

  192. And let me just point out that true morality is connected to

  193. true justice, and true justice is rooted in true biblical

  194. morality. We'll illustrate.

  195. Think of a clock. I've got a number of clocks in

  196. the portacabin. They they don't work.

  197. Some of them don't go TikTok. And the ones that do have got

  198. broken hands. So you could just imagine,

  199. here's a clock and it's doing TikTok and I'm looking at it.

  200. But that clock keeps me in the dark in relation to time.

  201. It's not a great help to teach and tell me the time and and

  202. conscience is a bit like that. Not only by the light of general

  203. revelation of God and creation, not only by the light of

  204. conscience, but especially by the light of the new birth.

  205. See the Lord Jesus said in John chapter 3 and in the verse 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  206. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except the man be born again, he

  207. cannot see the Kingdom of God. The word see means to grasp and

  208. to to understand every man that's truly born again of the

  209. Spirit, born from above. That man has got new life, and

  210. the moment he has got new life in Christ, he's also got a new

  211. light. He begins to see things

  212. differently. He sees a sin for the first

  213. time. He sees that he's got a mortal

  214. soul that needs to be saved. He sees and knows who the

  215. Saviour is. He, he, he sees and learns truth

  216. from the Scriptures. He begins to understand the

  217. necessity of keeping one day and seven unto the Lord.

  218. He, he, he begins to ponder something of the great truth

  219. about the sovereignty of God operating in the world.

  220. You see, Jesus stands and says I am the light of the world, and

  221. as the light of the world, the true light that cometh into the

  222. world, He sends and gives light. The Spirit of God takes the Word

  223. because by the light of the Word, the Spirit of God takes

  224. the truth of the Word of God and uses it to open the eyes of men

  225. blinded and darkened. You see, when the light shines

  226. in someone's face, in someone's eyes, you've got to think of

  227. their exposure to the light. You've got to think of their

  228. experience to the light. You've got to think of the

  229. essence of what the light does. Jesus Christ is not only the

  230. source of light and the sovereignty of light, but Jesus

  231. Christ is the light that shines. Jesus is a shining light, we're

  232. told in verse 9. He's the true light which

  233. lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

  234. He's the true light that shines in the darkness of the soul,

  235. sinful world. And as a light that shines, let

  236. me tell you very quickly, he's a powerful light.

  237. Jesus Christ is the most powerful light in the world.

  238. The most powerful light in the world fades into insignificance

  239. in comparison to Christ who stands and says I am the light

  240. of the world. You see, the light of Christ has

  241. a power and an energy because of the life of the sun within it

  242. and because of the life of the sun, it is a a clear, powerful

  243. living light. It's a purposeful light.

  244. Light is valuable light. Light has a purpose.

  245. It shines on and on despite the darkness.

  246. You see, the light of men found in Christ has a mission, has a

  247. purpose, has a goal. It's not a static thing.

  248. It's not like a lamppost shining at night.

  249. The light of man is planning. The light of man is moving.

  250. The light of man is alive. It's it's a living light.

  251. It grows and extends. It reaches out.

  252. It's the light of life. It's the light of the living

  253. word. I'll tell you better than that.

  254. It's a precious light, not only powerful and purposeful, but

  255. precious because it's the lights that shines in the darkness.

  256. Remember what the psalmist said there in Psalm 36 and verse 9.

  257. For with Thee is the fountain of life.

  258. In Thy light shall we see light? If I think of a dark room, I go

  259. into the room to find an object. Let's say it's into my front

  260. living room and I'm looking for the Bible, but I can't find it.

  261. I can't see it. Why?

  262. Because of in the dark. But when I switch on the light,

  263. then the light makes things visible.

  264. That's the idea. It's a powerful, purposeful,

  265. precious light. That's the truth about the light

  266. very quickly. And secondly, think about the

  267. triumph of the light. We're told in John's Gospel

  268. here, verse 5, and the light shineth in darkness, and the

  269. darkness comprehended it not. What two things are we learning

  270. about the light? The light shineth in darkness,

  271. and the darkness comprehendeth it not.

  272. The word comprehendeth means not able to grasp it, not

  273. understanding it, not grasping it mentally.

  274. That's one of the meanings. It also means not able to

  275. overcome it, not able to take it in hand, not in the sense of

  276. mastering it. The darkness cannot master the

  277. light. The light is more powerful, the

  278. light is more purposeful and precious than the darkness.

  279. You see the darkness here. The word darkness refers to a

  280. world of evil and sin and unbelief, a world of rebellion

  281. to God. And in the darkness, there's a

  282. state of ignorance regarding the light.

  283. In the darkness there's a state of wickedness because the

  284. darkness also represents man's heart.

  285. Not just darkness all around them, but darkness in him.

  286. And remember what Jeremiah the prophet says in verse 9 of

  287. chapter 17. The heart is deceitful above all

  288. things and desperately wicked. Who can know it?

  289. And again we read in Mark's Gospel in Chapter 7, verse 21.

  290. For from within night of the heart of man proceed evil

  291. thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, theft,

  292. covetousness, wickedness, deceit, the viciousness and evil

  293. eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.

  294. All these evil things come from within and defile the man.

  295. The darkness of man's heart is seen in their love for sin.

  296. It's seen in their hatred of Christian doctrine.

  297. I felt like standing it when I was in Belfast on Friday asking

  298. people, do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ?

  299. I didn't, but I felt like doing it because so many of the older

  300. generation were walking on past heedless and careless, and even

  301. when we offered them wine, Christmas book, they were

  302. shaking their heads. Some said no and walked on very

  303. quickly. Do you know who Jesus is?

  304. You see, man in the darkness of sin is ignorant of God Himself.

  305. Man in the darkness of sin is ignorant of the message of the

  306. Word that in Him was life and the life was the light of man.

  307. They don't know the eternal Word.

  308. They don't know He's the second person of the Trinity.

  309. They don't know he's this world's creator.

  310. They don't know that He's the only true life source.

  311. And even in him they move and live and have their being.

  312. They don't know that He's the true light of the world.

  313. They're in the darkness. They cannot see the light you

  314. see. Man in and of himself is

  315. incapable of regarding the light, regarding of responding

  316. to the light, regarding recognising the light or or

  317. receiving the light. And yet despite his darkness,

  318. the light, the true light shines all.

  319. We live in a a world where we hear of war, rumours of war.

  320. We're faced in daily with Islamic terrorism, mass

  321. shootings. We've heard today of what has

  322. happened in Bondi Beach in Sydney.

  323. We hear daily of Christian persecution around the world.

  324. In our United Kingdom, in the Western world, there's a woke

  325. culture and there's a culture trying to degrade the Christian

  326. Church and the Christian community.

  327. We hear of so many gripped by addiction to drugs and to drink.

  328. We hear of someone saddled by acute depression.

  329. We get news that a loved one has been stricken with cancer or or

  330. a loved ones die. See, this world is a dark place.

  331. It's a world of tears. There's many unknown.

  332. There's closed doors, there's discouragement, there's despair,

  333. there's difficulties. There's many layers to the

  334. darkness in this world. But in the darkness, Jesus

  335. stands and says, I am the light of the world.

  336. You see the light change on in the darkness, and the darkness

  337. is not able to grasp it. It doesn't understand the light,

  338. and the darkness is not able to overcome the light.

  339. It's not able to gain the mastery because the light is

  340. more powerful. Someone has said the darker the

  341. night, the brighter the light. Does that not inspire you with

  342. confidence? In a world of tremendous

  343. darkness, the darkness will not win.

  344. And that's true for the country, our United Kingdom.

  345. That's true for the church. We should be focusing on Christ

  346. coming to earth. When he came to this earth, He

  347. came as the life of man, and the life of man was the light of

  348. man. And he come to shine in the

  349. darkness. And remember the darkness hates

  350. the light. They hit the darkness because

  351. their deeds are evil and in their darkness and they took and

  352. crucified the only begotten Son of God.

  353. They put him to death and Calvary a horrible death of

  354. crucifixion. But he overcame death by death.

  355. And he arose the victor and he conquered the devil and

  356. conquered darkness. Because darkness is not able to

  357. overcome the light. Darkness is not able to

  358. comprehend the light that should encourage us.

  359. This is not pie in the sky stuff.

  360. I was thinking again that the open air on Friday of church

  361. buildings throughout this province.

  362. I was thinking of church doors that are open.

  363. I was thinking of Bibles that are being carried by

  364. individuals. I was thinking of sermons that

  365. are preached, doctrines that explained those that are willing

  366. to stand in the open air and give out tracts and booklets.

  367. Do you know what we're doing when we do that?

  368. We're being a witness to the light.

  369. We live in a land that is a rich Christian heritage and even

  370. though at this present time thousands and thousands of

  371. people are not rejoicing in the light, in fact, worse, they're

  372. rejecting the light because this is a day of apostasy and

  373. religious downgrade in the clench.

  374. And yet, despite the day, despite what's happening in the

  375. Church of England or the Church of Ireland or any other

  376. congregation, the light shines on.

  377. The light is purer, the light is brighter, the light is better

  378. than the darkness. That's the triumph of the light.

  379. One final thing. In our time has gone, the

  380. trusting of the light. The light shineth if the true

  381. light has come, and it has. For he announced I am the light

  382. of the world. Here's the question, do you know

  383. Him as the light of the world? Remember we read in John chapter

    John 3:19

  384. 3, verses 19 and 20, and this is the condemnation that light has

  385. come into the world. And men love darkness rather

  386. than light, because their deeds are evil.

  387. For everyone that doeth evil hateth the light.

  388. Neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be

  389. reproved. Verse 21 But he that doeth truth

  390. cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that

  391. they're wrought in God. You see, the light of the world

  392. is either received by faith or rejected.

  393. The Bible tells us there in John one verse 11, He came unto his

  394. own, and his own received him not.

  395. They rejected Him, not only his life, but as the light of man.

  396. Look at verse 12. But as many as received Him.

  397. There are those who rejected Him, but there was those who

  398. received Him. And it says, But as many as

  399. received Him. To them give you power to become

  400. the sons of God. The word power means authority

  401. or right even to them that believe in His name, which were

  402. born not of blood, not hereditary, nor of the will of

  403. the flesh, not of your own will or the will of man, but of God,

  404. not by Pope, priest or preacher, but born of God.

  405. Do you remember the scripture tells us that God is light and

  406. Him is no darkness at all. And the light of man, the Lord

  407. Jesus Christ, He has come to reveal the Father to us.

  408. He has come to make us aware of God's absolute holiness and

  409. purity, to teach us that sin cannot exist and abide because

  410. God is light and Him is no darkness at all.

  411. And the power of Christ as the light of man shines in this Dark

  412. World, and He calls sinners to come to enjoy and experience the

  413. knowledge of God in and through Him.

  414. He has chosen us in Him, He cleanses us in Himself by His

  415. life's blood, and He claims us as His own high by those who

  416. believe in Him, trust and accept and rely on Him.

  417. But those who receive Him, receive Him by faith, not just

  418. believe truthful propositions about Him in our head.

  419. Many do that. But you need to go a step

  420. further. You need to receive Him by faith

  421. from your heart, or receive Him by faith with your hand.

  422. The head and the heart and the hand work together.

  423. The empty hand reaches and takes the eternal life offered by

  424. Christ. Let me finish.

  425. There's no veneer. Preacher.

  426. One time preaching in Glasgow, I believe it was Glasgow Green.

  427. I've never been there preaching, but he was preaching and after

  428. he was preaching for a time, there was this, we call him a

  429. smart aleck. He got up and he said to the

  430. preacher, I would like to say a few words and this is what he

  431. said. I quote, I do not believe a word

  432. that this preacher has spoken. I don't believe there is a God.

  433. I don't believe in heaven, don't believe in hell, don't believe

  434. in Jesus Christ, certainly don't believe the Bible, and I don't

  435. believe all this supernatural stuff about being saved that

  436. this man has spoken about. And he walked down and of course

  437. the crowd was there and they were stunned.

  438. Some were open mouthed, some were gasping, some were nodding

  439. their head in agreement. They didn't believe either.

  440. Well, well, another man kept forward and he said to the

  441. preacher, well, just before you say anything, do you mind if I

  442. say a few words? So he got permission and this is

  443. what he said in response. Listen to me folks, We all are

  444. Glaswegians. I do not believe in the River

  445. Clyde because I can't see it. I don't believe there's grass

  446. under my feet. I don't believe there's trees

  447. all around me or before me. Now before you asked why I don't

  448. believe in the River Clyde or that there's grass under my feet

  449. or that there's trees all around me, Here's the answer.

  450. I can't see them. I was blamed and I am blamed.

  451. This fool here that's just spoke, he doesn't believe in

  452. God, the Bible, heaven or hell. And why does he not believe?

  453. Because he's spiritually blind and he needs the light.

  454. Now that was the right answer because many are spiritually

  455. blind as well as spiritually dead and they say we can't see

  456. and understand it. It's because they need their

  457. eyes opened, and the only one who could open their eyes is the

  458. light of men. And how could they get their

  459. eyes opened? By believing in the light of

  460. man, but also by receiving Him by faith.

  461. One is the outworking of the other.

  462. If the true light has come, if He announced I am the light of

  463. the world, the light of man, And you want to know the Father and

  464. you want the Father revealed to you and you want to know that

  465. you're part of God's family, then you must believe in the

  466. Lord Jesus Christ. You must receive him.

  467. I finish with this. But as many as received him to

  468. them, to those that receive him give he power to become the sons

  469. of God, even to them that believe in his name.

  470. And it's linked up to the new birth.

  471. The Spirit of God implants the gift of faith, enabling us to

  472. receive and rest in Christ alone for salvation.

  473. There has to be the trusting of the light.

  474. Christ is the Lord of light. The truth I've tried to set

  475. before you. I've tried to get you to

  476. understand the triumph. The darkness can't overcome or

  477. master the light. The darkness can't understand

  478. the light. And here's the truth.

  479. The light is to be received by faith.

  480. May the Lord take these few thoughts and bless them to you

  481. and give us understanding and wisdom in the reception of the

  482. Word of God.
