  1. Now my text this evening is taken from Mark chapter 10 and

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  2. in the verse 45 it reads as follows.

  3. For even the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but the

  4. minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

  5. And have entitled this message this evening.

  6. Understanding the ransom of Christ the Redeemer in Mark

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  7. chapter 10 finds our Lord Jesus Christ in the road to Jerusalem.

  8. Remember, from the day of his birthright up 33 years earlier,

  9. the shadow of the cross has stretched across his life and

  10. ministry. Now the cross is looming large.

  11. What seemed to be in the horizon.

  12. Now his hour has come. So here he is on the road to

  13. Jerusalem. He's just told his disciples for

  14. the third time about his death and suffering.

  15. Listen to what he says there. Verse 33 saying, Behold, we go

  16. up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man shall be delivered unto the

  17. chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn

  18. him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles, and they

  19. shall mock him, and shall scourge them, shall spit in him,

  20. and shall kill him, and the third day he shall rise again.

  21. Now his disciples remain tragically preoccupied, not with

  22. this message about his suffering and sacrifice on the cross, but

  23. preoccupied with status and position.

  24. Both James and John come to Christ requesting seats of

  25. honour in Christ's glorious Kingdom.

  26. Once the other disciples what heard what James and John had

  27. requested, they were filled with a sense of indignation and rage.

  28. You see, sadly, their hearts were being shaped by the world's

  29. view of greatness, by the world's view of power and

  30. possession and prominence. Now, strangely, it was in this

  31. context, in the context of the manifestation of pride, in the

  32. context of a misunderstanding of Christ's true mission, that the

  33. Lord Jesus uttered one of the most important verses in the

  34. entire Gospels. Mark 10 verse 45 is one of the

    Mark 10:45

  35. clearest and plainest statements on the true mission and purpose

  36. of Jesus Christ coming into our world.

  37. It's wonderfully repeated in Matthew chapter 20, verse 28.

    Matthew 20:28

  38. And when the Bible says something once, of course it is

  39. very important. But when that statement is

  40. repeated verbatim, that makes it highly significant.

  41. That makes it doubly important. You see, Mark 1045 is not just

  42. merely a a moral example of why Christ came into the world.

  43. This text of Scripture, I believe, is wonderfully A

  44. redemptive declaration because this text explains who came.

  45. This text explains why he came. This text explains what he

  46. actually came to do. This text teaches us what true

  47. greatness really looks like in the cross shaped Kingdom of

  48. Christ. You see, the Lord Jesus is

  49. teaching us here that God's salvation is not accomplished

  50. merely by Human Services or religious rights or ceremonies

  51. done unto God, but that God's salvation has been accomplished

  52. through Jesus Christ and His cross work alone.

  53. Listen to the words again, for even the Son of Man came not to

  54. be ministered unto, but to minister and to give his life a

  55. ransom for many doing this text of scripture, and this is a

  56. textual sermon. There's four things.

  57. One, the person that is presented for even the Son of

  58. man. Now notice the Lord Jesus begins

  59. with who he is for even the Son of Man.

  60. The words the Son of Man is a great title, and it's

  61. interesting that the Lord Jesus used this title of himself.

  62. It's used about 80 times in the Gospels alone, a rough

  63. breakdown, 30 in Matthew in Mark 14 times, Luke 25 times, and

  64. John 12 times. And outside the Gospels, this

  65. title is rarely used. And this usage of 80 times,

  66. mostly by the Lord Jesus, demonstrates that the Lord Jesus

  67. deliberately chose this title as his own primary self

  68. designation. Who are you?

  69. I'm the Son of Man. Now what is that title saying to

  70. us? When you read those words, the

  71. Son of Man in your Bible, what is it saying to you?

  72. Let me try and teach you what it means.

  73. When Jesus said for even the Son of Man, he was saying, one, I'm

  74. a true human being. You see the Son of Man, there's

  75. a Hebrew expression. It literally means I'm a human

  76. being. The emphasis is on his humanity.

  77. You've got to think of a being of flesh and blood.

  78. He's identifying with humanity. In other words, there was a day

  79. when he was born. He he was born in a flesh and

  80. blood body. It's not what Paul told us in

  81. Hebrews chapter 2 and verse 14. For as much then as children are

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  82. partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part

  83. of the same that through death he might destroy him.

  84. That had the power of death. That is the devil.

  85. And in that body he was wearied. In that body he wept.

  86. In that body he experienced hunger.

  87. In that body he was tempted. In that body he suffered.

  88. He knew pain. And in that body he was born to

  89. die. Now that matters.

  90. Why does it matter? Because only a real true man

  91. could die as a ransom for men. You see the Bible says in First

  92. Corinthians 1522, as in Adam all dies, so in Christ will all be

  93. made a lie. The first man was Adam, and he

  94. brought death into the world. And therefore a man must undo

  95. the penalty and power of death. If sin came in by man, by one

  96. man's disobedience, so sin must be dealt with by a true man, a

  97. man of flesh and blood. And that's exactly what Hebrews

  98. 10 and 12 teaches us. But this man, Speaking of

  99. Christ, after he'd offered one sacrifice for sins forever sat

  100. down on the right hand of God. So the the very title the Son of

  101. Man teaches us I'm a real true human being of flesh and blood.

  102. The second thing it teaches is this, I am the king.

  103. You see this title points us to the divine messianic figure who

  104. was to come 80 times when the Lord Jesus used these words, the

  105. Son of Man making this a self designated title.

  106. He was thinking I believe of Daniel's prophecy.

  107. Listen to Daniel Chapter 7 and verse 13.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  108. I saw in the night visions, and behold, one like the Son of Man

  109. came with the clouds of heaven and came to the ancient of Days,

  110. and they brought him near before him, and they were given him

  111. dominion and glory, and the Kingdom that all people,

  112. nations, and languages should serve Him.

  113. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which shall not pass

  114. away, and His Kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

  115. Daniel 713 and 14. Think of these words.

  116. One like the Son of Man came with the clouds of heaven, and

  117. there was given him dominion and glory in the Kingdom, and all

  118. people should serve Him. You see, this title means more

  119. than saying I'm a real true human being.

  120. Now does mean that I'm truly human, but it also means I'm a

  121. heavenly being. I am one who's been given

  122. eternal authority and power and destined to rule over men

  123. forever. So when the Lord Jesus used his

  124. title 80 times, the person that was presented here in the text,

  125. he was quietly and clearly claiming to be the person

  126. mentioned in Daniel. I've thought of this.

  127. Why did he choose the designation the Son of Man?

  128. Why did he not just come out and say I'm the promised Messiah?

  129. Well, was it not to try and avoid political

  130. misunderstandings? You see, in the mind of the

  131. Jews, the one who would come saying I'm the promised Messiah

  132. was looked upon as a a military political revolutionary type

  133. figure. And this designation, the Son of

  134. man, I'm truly human, but I'm also the divine heavenly King

  135. who was to come. Surely it let him showcase his

  136. true mission in a progressive and in a gradual way.

  137. This title combines the humanity of Christ and the glory of

  138. Christ. It teaches us this, that Christ

  139. is not only a real, true man of flesh and blood, but Christ is

  140. the true suffering servant, the coming King, the crucified

  141. Christ, the eternal Judge. Because this title holds both

  142. the cross and the crown together, it highlights His

  143. authority. Do you know what it really says?

  144. It says the Son of Man have power on earth to forgive sins.

  145. He said that himself. He said the Son of Man is Lord

  146. also of the Sabbath. He testified he shall see the

  147. Son of Man coming in the clouds. A real man, yes, but more a

  148. royal man from heaven, the God man, as we'll see in a moment.

  149. This is not just a great title, folks.

  150. This is a great truth. The glorious king came to

  151. minister, the servant of servants came to serve to give

  152. us life, A ransom for many. And the word ransom refers to a

  153. vicarious substitutionary atonement.

  154. And this announcement has been made, this glorious son of man

  155. who's come as a real royal heavenly man, this one is

  156. announcing that he's going to fulfil his Kingdom and his

  157. kingship by dying for others and rising from the dead.

  158. And I learned that from that title.

  159. The person that is presented, what's he saying to us?

  160. He's saying I'm a true man 80 times.

  161. He's saying I'm the promised heavenly king 80 times He's

  162. saying I will reach my throne through sacrifice and suffering.

  163. I will build my Kingdom by my death and resurrection.

  164. That's what he's saying. The person that's presented very

  165. quickly, the purpose that is proclaimed.

  166. Notice if you go back to the text, there's a wee word that

  167. stands out. It says in Mark chapter 10 and

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  168. in the verse 45 for the Son of Man for even the Son of Man

  169. came. Now pause there underline the

  170. word came because you see that word speaks volumes.

  171. How did he come came as in the past tense.

  172. Surely that word came speaks of intentional something that's

  173. voluntary, an intentional voluntary mission.

  174. Why did he come? So let the Scripture speak for

  175. the Son of Man. Luke 19 and 30.

  176. I am come to seek and deceive that which was lost.

  177. You see, the word came ties into the incarnation.

  178. Great is the mystery of God in us.

  179. God was manifest in the flesh. See the liberal modern churches,

  180. they tell us Jesus was just a good man.

  181. Some would even say, well, he was a great man.

  182. He he did some miracles. They might even tell us he was a

  183. gracious man. Point us to his speech.

  184. Never man speak like this man and all that's true, but he's

  185. more. And this is where the liberal

  186. and modern churches feel down, because he's the God man, great

  187. as the mystery of God and as God was manifest in the flesh.

  188. And as I told them a few weeks ago at the 5th module of the

  189. Beginner's Bible class, that there's 9 explicit references in

  190. the New Testament that teach us that Jesus Christ is called God.

  191. That's only one of the lines of evidence to prove His deity.

  192. It ties in not just to His incarnation, but to His virgin

  193. birth. And I'm glad that I can say I

  194. believe in the doctrine of the virgin birth of Jesus Christ.

  195. Remember what we read? Mary asked the question there to

  196. the Angel Gabriel in Luke chapter 1 and verse 35, and she

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  197. said this tremendous statement to the Angel, Luke 1 and 35.

  198. Mary said unto the Angel, How shall this be saying, I know not

  199. a man look? 134 The Angel answered and said

  200. unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee.

  201. The power of the Highest shall over shadow thee.

  202. Therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee

  203. shall be called the Son of God. And Galatians four and four and

  204. five tells us, But when the fullness of the time was come,

  205. what did God do? God sent forth His Son.

  206. Hi, me a different woman made under the law to redeem them

  207. that were under the law that we might receive the adoption of

  208. sins. Do you see that He came when the

  209. time was right and the time was ripe, and He came according to

  210. the eternal purposes of God, and it ties into his mission.

  211. The Word came because if the doctrine of the incarnation is

  212. true, God was manifest in the flesh, and He was born

  213. supernaturally of woman only by the power of the Holy Ghost,

  214. Then what was His ultimate mission?

  215. What did He come to do? Here's the answer.

  216. If you look again at Luke 10 and verse 45, to give His life a

  217. ransom for many. We'll come to that in a wee

  218. minute. Could I inform you Christ didn't

  219. come into the world to help us to get along with each other, so

  220. we'd stop fighting and arguing, so we'd start loving and serving

  221. one another. He didn't come to teach us to

  222. take care of the poor and feed the hungry and tend to the sick.

  223. That's a part of it, but that's not the ultimate or the real

  224. reason. Christ didn't come into the

  225. world to help us to restore social justice.

  226. He didn't come into the world to help us to live a better life.

  227. He didn't come into the world to show us what love is and what

  228. sacrifices. He didn't come into the world to

  229. show us you need to save the planet from self destruction and

  230. heal the environment. Now all of these things are

  231. there, but they're on the periphery.

  232. They're not the heart. And the purpose of his mission

  233. know his coming into the world as God manifest in flesh was for

  234. this ultimate reason to OfferUp himself in the cross as a ransom

  235. for sinners, to OfferUp himself as a once and for all sacrifice

  236. for sin. And that goes to the heart of

  237. the gospel. And that's what's missing from

  238. liberal churches. That's what's missing from

  239. modern, modern churches today. That is, the heart of the gospel

  240. is missing. That's why things are in such

  241. dire straits in which we're in. Salvation, remember, begins with

  242. God. Salvation's all of God's Amazing

  243. Grace. And God's salvation was

  244. accomplished and fulfilled only in the personal work of Jesus

  245. Christ. And God's salvation is not just

  246. soul saving, but it's, it's life transforming.

  247. It's, it's based on sovereign grace.

  248. It's scripturally rooted in God's Amazing Grace.

  249. Notice these words. Look again at the text.

  250. It says, for even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto,

  251. but to minister. Do you feel the weight of that?

  252. The rightful king doesn't demand service.

  253. He's not demanding bow down to me and do this and that.

  254. Although when he come into the world, the Bible says, let all

  255. the angels of God worship him and all of creation obeys from

  256. the sun and the moon and the stars, And yet for his

  257. creatures, you and I, sinful as we are, he doesn't demand

  258. service. He delights in service.

  259. He gives the service because the Lord of glory has come and he's

  260. come to take the form of a servant.

  261. Listen to these words in the book of Philippians.

  262. In Philippians chapter 2, it says, let this mind be in you,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  263. which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God,

  264. thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself

  265. of no reputation and took upon Him.

  266. The form of a servant was made in the likeness of men, and

  267. being found in fashion as a man who humbled himself and became

  268. obedient on the death, even the death of the cross, you see His

  269. coming into the world and setting aside and veiling His

  270. glory. It was not a denial of His

  271. dating. It was a display of His dating

  272. the truly great One. His entire ministry was a life

  273. of act of obedience rendered unto God to accomplish eternal

  274. salvation. He healed the sick, yes, He

  275. touched the lepers. Yes, He met with sinful men and

  276. women. Yes, He taught the truth, but He

  277. also in his life kept the law of God perfectly.

  278. That's why Paul called him the sin, the spotless Lamb of God.

  279. He did no sin. He knew no sin.

  280. In him is no sin. And we can give you the

  281. references tonight. He kept and fulfilled the

  282. precepts of the law of God perfectly on our behalf.

  283. And the testimony of the Father was this, This is my beloved

  284. Son, in whom I well pleased. Did you know the Lord Jesus

  285. said, which of you convinced of me of sin?

  286. He said, the Prince of this world cometh and of nothing in

  287. me. There's not even a spark of sin

  288. within me. Remember Pilate's wife came out

  289. to Pilate and said, I have nothing to do with this just

  290. man. That word just means righteous.

  291. Pilate, when he examined him, said I find no fault in him.

  292. What was Judas Iscariot's testimony before he went out and

  293. hanged himself? I betrayed innocent blood.

  294. Not only the purpose that was presented, but very quickly

  295. think about the price that was paid.

  296. If you turn back in our text, it says here and to give us life a

  297. ransom to give us life a ransom. You see the birth, the life, the

  298. sinless life, the life of service and ministry of the Lord

  299. Jesus was all a pathway inexorably towards his vicarious

  300. substitutionary death on the cross.

  301. His death on the cross was not an accident, not a tragedy.

  302. It was not a a martyrdom gone wrong.

  303. It is not even just purely the love of God theory.

  304. Listen to the text. It says and to give us life.

  305. He was truly born a woman. He took on humanity permanently.

  306. He retained his Godhead. He lived in a truly human body.

  307. He lived a sinless life. He lived a.

  308. Life of perfect obedience to the love God, a life of unsullied

  309. purity, not able to sin, able not to sin.

  310. And I put it to you tonight, This is the kind of Saviour we

  311. need. A Saviour who kept the law of

  312. God perfectly, but a Saviour who gave us life and paid the

  313. penalty for death on the cross, because he truly gave up his

  314. life unto death. The language here is voluntary,

  315. it's deliberate, it's sacrificial, it's atoning.

  316. Remember Isaiah the prophet said he was wounded for our

  317. transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, and the chastisement

  318. of our peace was upon him, and with the stripes we are healed.

  319. Isaiah went on to say in Isaiah 53 and in the verse 10 he poured

  320. out his soul unto death. You see, he didn't just risk his

  321. life on the cross, He voluntary relinquished it unto death.

  322. He said it is finished. He bowed his head, and triumph

  323. gave up the ghost. See the death.

  324. Of Christ in the cross. And this is where I have again

  325. with the liberals and the modernist and the ecumenist.

  326. The death of Christ. In the cross is more than just a

  327. good example, more than just a demonstration of love.

  328. Oh yes, it is that. But a snore much more.

  329. The death of Christ and the cross at his heart was a

  330. voluntary, necessary atonement for sin.

  331. His death was a ransom. And the ransom?

  332. Is the real price paid to secure the freedom of captives Now?

  333. What does that mean? It means this.

  334. That we're born in. Sin and shapen and iniquity.

  335. The Bible teaches us we're not only born in sin and shapen and

  336. iniquity, but we're born slaves to sin and Satan.

  337. We're not neutral. We are guilty, polluted rebels

  338. in the sight of God and in that condition.

  339. Christ Jesus come into. The world to pay the ransom

  340. price to God for her freedom and our deliverance.

  341. He came to. Satisfy the divine wrath of God

  342. against sin. He came to satisfy.

  343. The divine justice of God. He came to satisfy the divine

  344. law of God. He came to satisfy the divine

  345. holiness of God. And Christ's death accomplishes

  346. something. Christ's death secures eternal

  347. redemption. Remember what we read in the

  348. book of Hebrews, in Hebrews Chapter 9 and in the verse 12.

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  349. Let's listen to the Word of God. Hebrews 9 and 12.

  350. Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood

  351. He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal

  352. redemption for us over there in the book of Hebrews again and

  353. Hebrews 13, and in the verse 20, we read these words.

  354. Now the God of peace that brought again from the dead our

  355. Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood

  356. of the everlasting covenant. Whenever the Lord.

  357. Jesus presented his life to the Father and gave his life a

  358. ransom on the tree and paid the penalty that the broken law

  359. demanded for sin, which was death, and shed his blood, His

  360. death in the tree. Revealed to us the.

  361. Horrible nature of sin. It revealed the divine wrath

  362. against sin, because he, he suffered the full penalty of the

  363. law. It revealed divine satisfaction

  364. force. And you see, the Bible teaches

  365. for he that is Christ rendered unto God a full satisfaction for

  366. sin, for. It says in second.

  367. Corinthians chapter 521 For he that is God had made him, that

  368. is Christ to be sin for us who knew no sin that we might be

  369. made the righteousness of God in him.

  370. And on the cross, the Father treated the Son guilty of the

  371. sins of his people. He's held fully responsible.

  372. He's held accountable. You see, the Lord Jesus on the

  373. cross was not just an innocent spotless son, an innocent,

  374. spotless Lamb of God. Our sin is put to His account,

  375. our sin is imputed to Him, and He took full responsibility for

  376. that sin, and He took the full wrath of God upon Himself.

  377. That's why He cried out. My God, my God, why hast thou

  378. forsaken me, forsaken of the Father?

  379. Why? Because He was paying the ransom

  380. price, a price paid to redeem His people.

  381. So we can be set free from sins, penalty and power and pleasure.

  382. Should we set free from the the guilt and corruption,

  383. condemnation of eternal hell. I finished tonight not.

  384. Only with the price. That was paid, the person that

  385. was presented and the purpose that was proclaimed and the

  386. price that was paid. But think lastly of the people

  387. that is purchased. Notice the wording here to give

  388. us life, a ransom for man. I don't see that.

  389. As a limitation, I see that as a definition or a declaration of

  390. intent. Christ's ransom.

  391. Praise is efficient for all who will trust him as Lord and

  392. Saviour. He He didn't come and die to

  393. make salvation possible. It's not.

  394. Hypothetical He came to accomplish redemption.

  395. He came to make it actually a reality.

  396. I believe that Jesus saves and his blood makes me whiter than

  397. snow. The Bible teaches.

  398. Psalm 23 and verse one the Lord is my shepherd.

  399. It it says in John chapter 10 and in the verse 11 I am the

    John 10 chapter mention

  400. Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd giveth his

  401. life for the sheep. And here's the question, are you

  402. one of the many? Are you one of his sheep?
