  1. Just before I sit down, I want to mention a couple of things.

  2. I'm looking over the congregation here and I see a

  3. young couple amongst us and they have just recently got engaged.

  4. And that's a wonderful thing, tremendous encouragement.

  5. And we want to say congratulations to Campbell and

  6. to Catherine. At this time.

  7. I also want to mention that we still have two of Doctor Barnes

  8. books. Never a dull moment out there in

  9. the main foyer. They're £10 each.

  10. The money, the proceeds, goes to the Deborah House project in

  11. Romania. I have really enjoyed reading

  12. the book. I learnt.

  13. A lot of things that I didn't know about the Lord's servant,

  14. I'll not start telling you. He, he'll tell you himself.

  15. It's really, really tremendous. And we have two books left.

  16. But great if we had them sold tonight.

  17. And then you can enjoy the reading and then the proceeds.

  18. Then we'll go to the Deborah House Project.

  19. Could I just say one final thing?

  20. Could I ask you to pray tonight for a man called Hugh?

  21. He's in the hospital. The Lord knows all about Hugh.

  22. And we'd ask you to remember Hugh in your prayer that the

  23. Lord would touch him and meet his need to his glory.

  24. Thank you. I'll hand over to Doctor Barnes.

  25. I'd. Like to read together with you,

  26. please just some verses from John chapter 3, third chapter of

    John 3 chapter mention

  27. John chapter 3. And it's in this chapter we have

    John 3 chapter mention

  28. the conversation of our Lord with the Nicodemus, A ruler who

  29. came to Jesus by night. And we want to just read a few

  30. verses beginning at verse 14 place.

  31. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, Even

  32. so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whosoever believeth in

  33. him should not perish, but have eternal life.

  34. For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son,

  35. that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have

  36. everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into

  37. the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him

  38. might be saved. He that believeth in him is not

  39. condemn, but he that believeth not is condemned already because

  40. he had not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

  41. Ending the reading there, 1st 18 And we know God will bless the

  42. reading of His Word to all of our hearts.

  43. Do want to say a word of thanks to our brother for the

  44. opportunity of coming along and sharing a word of testimony

  45. tonight. David is one of those very

  46. persuasive people and when he asked you to do something, he

  47. doesn't give up. And they asked me to give a

  48. testimony, even though I've retired from preaching.

  49. When you reach 83, well, it's time to slow down.

  50. Other things take place, but it is the joy to be able to come

  51. and to share with you. Or I came to know the Lord Jesus

  52. as my own impersonal Saviour. I was born in the city of

  53. Belfast in a street called Rosalind St, not far from the

  54. Emmanuel Mission Hall and I believe in the prevalence of God

  55. and the hand of God and all our lives.

  56. Things don't just happen by chance, but behind it all

  57. there's a servant, A sovereign God who works all things out for

  58. our good and for his glory. I was born into a family.

  59. There was 7 boys, seven brothers and there was one girl winning

  60. the sister who was the oldest and if ever there was a

  61. Christian, it was my sister when I I always remember her just as

  62. a Christian girl who loved the Bible and loved the Lord's

  63. people. And we were sent along to the

  64. Emmanuel Hall to learn the word of God in the way of salvation.

  65. I meant to say one of the things about being brought up in a

  66. large family is that you have hand me down now.

  67. I don't think the young people today will feel that the same.

  68. There's more prosperity today than ever before.

  69. But you got hand me downs and especially in a large family of

  70. boys. My sister was the eldest.

  71. And you know, I have to say the hand me downs didn't really suit

  72. me because my sister's dress has never really seemed to fit or

  73. were the right sword for me. But well, that's life there in a

  74. large family. We were sent along to the

  75. Emmanuel Sunday School. The missioner was Pastor

  76. Proctor, a man sent from God, God, a great teacher of the word

  77. of God and preacher of the gospel.

  78. And we went to the Sunday school and there we taught, were taught

  79. the Scriptures in the way of salvation.

  80. We also would go along to the children's meeting on a

  81. Wednesday night and and they had a big children's meeting,

  82. probably would fill this hall, if not more of boys and girls

  83. gathered in under the sound of the word of God.

  84. Now I have to confess as a young boy, I love to pick up things

  85. that I found in the street as a piece of cord or a piece of wire

  86. or something like that. And one day I picked up what you

  87. call a washer. I'm not talking about the

  88. dishwasher, dear. Talking about a re round piece

  89. of metal with a hole in the middle.

  90. And I put it into my pocket and I never thought any more about

  91. it. And the time came when the

  92. children's meeting came and Mr. Phillips, who was the Sunday

  93. School Superintendent and also the leader of the children's

  94. mission, he spoke with a whistle in his voice.

  95. Did you ever meet somebody to God?

  96. And he would say, now poison scared, sit up in your seats.

  97. And I used to be fascinated by Mr. Phillips and his free

  98. whistle. And the time came for the

  99. offering and of course I put my hand in my pocket and the only

  100. thing I had was the washer, the last of the big spenders, and I

  101. slipped it into the basket and I felt very pleased with myself.

  102. Somebody will get a surprise when they see that.

  103. Never did I realise the surprise was going to come my way.

  104. And the following week Mr. Phillips came to the offering

  105. and they held the washer up and they said no, and he whistled

  106. his way through it. And someone put this in the

  107. offering last week and God saw who it was.

  108. I thought it was Kentucky Fried Chicken.

  109. I was waiting on a lightning coming through the doors and the

  110. windows and I was going to be judged there and then.

  111. And it really shook me. And I can tell you never again

  112. that I ever put a washer into the offering basket.

  113. But I thank God for the Emmanuel mission because it was there

  114. that I was to come to know Christ as my Saviour.

  115. Now the year 1859 was the year of the great revival in Ulster

  116. and over 100,000 souls that was estimated was swept into the

  117. Kingdom of God by God's sovereign power and revival

  118. blessing. And in the year 1959 was 100th

  119. anniversary of the great revival and they invited great preachers

  120. from all around the world to come and preach and fill the

  121. pulpits an Ulster and to preach the word of God.

  122. Doctor Martyn Lloyd Jones, Dr Appleman, a converted Jewish

  123. lawyer, and Oswald Smith, another great name fellow the

  124. pulpits throughout our province. Now in the mission hall there

  125. was a young band, converted bandleader Johnny Bassanio, and

  126. he was a great trumpet player. And Johnny Bassani was asked for

  127. they do a mission and he had never done a mission on his own

  128. before, but he was asked for they come to the manual mission

  129. and would he do a mission there. I have to say that it was a

  130. breath of revival. People were flocking to get into

  131. the meetings and to hear the word of God, and souls were

  132. being saved. And I had no intention of going

  133. to the mission, even though my sister had asked me in different

  134. times. And one night I decided I would

  135. go to the pitcher house and across the road and one day a

  136. mate's house, Jim Barnes, and asked Missus Barnes, Jim in

  137. insistently. He's gone out.

  138. I don't know where he's gone, but he's away anyway.

  139. And I thought to myself, well, I don't like going to the pictures

  140. of the cinema by myself. Then I remembered the mission

  141. and I believe it was the sovereignty of God just brought

  142. it to remembrance. And I said to myself, I'll go to

  143. the mission, I'll get a seat at the back.

  144. I'll be last then, and I'll be first out of the meeting.

  145. But God had other plans for my life that night and every person

  146. in the meeting tonight. God has got a plan and a purpose

  147. for your life. And don't miss the will of God,

  148. for the greatest tragedy that can happen to anyone is to live

  149. a life outside the will of God. And that night I sat in the

  150. meeting and I was thrilled because the the boy Johnny

  151. Bassan, who came from taxes and they had that taxes drawl, you

  152. know the way they speak. And I thought he was just like

  153. John Wayne. John Wayne was one of my

  154. favourites in the movies. See, I think John Wayne and my

  155. father won the war between them. I don't tell anybody else that,

  156. but I, I was so taken up with John Wayne and the fascination

  157. of this young preachers voice. And I enjoyed the playing of a

  158. trumpet. The singing was bright, and then

  159. he got up to preach and he preached the glorious gospel of

  160. our Lord Jesus Christ like I'd never heard it before.

  161. And I knew that God so loved the world.

  162. But that night I discovered God's love is personal, that the

  163. Son of God loved me and gave himself for me.

  164. And I was sitting in that meeting challenged by the Word

  165. of God, the story of the cross and the message of the gospel.

  166. And then the evangelist said we're going to sing a hymn.

  167. It's one of my favourite hymns, just as I am without one plea,

  168. but that thy blood was shed for me.

  169. And as they were singing that hymn, this evangelist didn't

  170. make it easy. He said if you would like to

  171. accept Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, I wanted to

  172. get out of your seat and walk to the front, confessing your need

  173. of Christ. And there was a war within my

  174. heart, a real battle and a struggle as I thought on one

  175. hand of the cross and the Christ had done for me and on the other

  176. hand there was a devil and the pleasures of sin and there was a

  177. battle between the two. But I thank God for overcoming

  178. grace. And that night I walked to the

  179. front and I was willing to confess my need of salvation and

  180. the wonderful thing and the lovely thing was this, that we

  181. Mr. Phillips, who led the Sunday school work, came over to be.

  182. He was appointed as one of the councillors and they said stand

  183. there, come over here. And I sat down in one of the old

  184. forms that I'd set, and Sunday school days, and he opened up

  185. God's Word, John 3 and 16. And he put it this way.

  186. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son,

  187. that if Stanley Barnes would believe in him, he would not

  188. perish, but have everlasting life.

  189. He said, Whosoever means you, put your name in and claim

  190. Christ as your Saviour. And he prayed a very simple

  191. prayer, and they asked me to pray that prayer as my own, and

  192. I followed him in prayer. And that night I asked the Lord

  193. Jesus to come into my heart and to be my Saviour.

  194. And the Lord was true to his word.

  195. That night the Lord came into my heart, and I was a new creature

  196. in Christ. All things that began to pass

  197. away and all things began to be new.

  198. Now the problem was I had to go back into work.

  199. I was serving my apprenticeship and I really hear this United

  200. Cooperative Bakery Society, UCBS sounds like a degree from

  201. Queen's University. But it was the most one of the

  202. biggest bakeries in Belfast. It was just at the bottom of our

  203. street and Ravenhill Ave and I had I had the opportunity of

  204. going and serving my time as apprentice Baker.

  205. Now I never tell people that too often for bakers don't do too

  206. good in the Bible. First Baker you read about in

  207. the story of Joseph that took him out and hung them.

  208. Now I'm sure they'll not do that tonight.

  209. Don't see any hangman here tonight, but I had to go back

  210. into the bakery and there confess Christ as my Saviour and

  211. I didn't have to give up my own sea of companions once I knew I

  212. was saved. They give me up because with

  213. nothing in common. And I used to love to play cards

  214. poker and I can still remember how to play it and so on and

  215. remember break time. Used to run down to get her

  216. break and get her mug filled with Tanner sandwiches and then

  217. over to the card schools and we would play poker now in the

  218. bakery. It was difficult to live for

  219. Christ. But if you nail your colours to

  220. the Mass, the Lord will honour you and bless you.

  221. And I nailed my colours to the Mass that I was a Christian and

  222. the Baker said to me, my apprentice friends and they said

  223. you know you'll only last a week at being good 11, you'll only

  224. last a week. You'll send the back with us

  225. again. And then they give me a

  226. fortnight, give me a month, Hallelujah.

  227. They eventually gave me up all together because do you know

  228. why? God had given me eternal life,

  229. Life more abundant, and come that you might have life, and

  230. that you might have it more abundantly, And I found a

  231. greater and a happier life of being a Christian.

  232. And I've been on both sides of the road, the good side and the

  233. bad side of the broad road. And I can tell you Christ never

  234. fails to satisfy and to keep. And you know, the Lord and the

  235. bakery taught us many wonderful lessons.

  236. I was working along with another fellow in the machine and the

  237. break time came and for some reason we went to the main

  238. switch and pulled the switch down and didn't use the normal

  239. switch that we did. And let's put the power off

  240. completely for the machine and make him back again from a break

  241. and push the button and there wasn't a move but forgotten

  242. about pulling the part switched down and we sent for Jimmy Lyle.

  243. He was the foreman and he wore a wee white coat down to here and

  244. he could get nowhere. Looked at it and looked at it

  245. could get nowhere. Then the sun for Harry Bale and

  246. he was one of the higher managers and he came with his

  247. long my coat and he looked like salmon that couldn't find out

  248. was wrong. Then the sun for Sammy the

  249. mechanic and either he could fix anything with a wee sledgehammer

  250. and a better wire, he could tie it together.

  251. Sammy came and he was beat. I was standing there and

  252. suddenly I looked up at the parsh, which I said, Oh my God,

  253. but forgot to pull the parsh which and there's no power.

  254. Nothing wrong with Jane. And you know, beloved, the Lord

  255. taught me a big lesson there that I've kept before me all my

  256. life. You see, they had the machinery,

  257. but they had no power. And what needs to happen in the

  258. Church today afresh is that we need to get connected to the

  259. power of the Holy Spirit. Ye shall receive power after

  260. that. The Holy Spirit has come upon

  261. you and the Church today. Individual believers, we need to

  262. get connected with the power of God the Holy Ghost, and that's

  263. one of the reasons why God blessed the church.

  264. I believe in the early days, Doctor Douglas and another

  265. brother, Doctor Paisley, had an all night of prayer and they

  266. were looking to God for a mighty baptism of the Spirit of God.

  267. And they prayed to the early hours of the morning, and then

  268. they knew for a truth that God had filled them with the power

  269. of the Holy Ghost, and they went forth to turn the world upside

  270. down. And while Doctor Paisley was a

  271. man of great talents and ability and oratory theology, yet the

  272. secret of his power throughout the whole of his life was the

  273. power of God, the Holy Ghost, the child of God.

  274. God hasn't left you to struggle through the Christian life and

  275. to live a defeated life, but you should wait till you're endued

  276. with a power You're commanded to be filled with the Holy Spirit

  277. and the quench not the Spirit and you quench the Holy Spirit

  278. by not being filled with the Spirit.

  279. And so God taught us a wonderful lesson even there and the bakery

  280. concerning living a Christian life and things were going well.

  281. Ought to say this just in passing.

  282. When it was a boy of about 10 or 11 roughly, the workmen were out

  283. lifting the big cobblestones. Remember the streets were

  284. cobblestones and around our district they were lifting them

  285. all and they were making them and the plain streets.

  286. And I remember we were carrying on and this fella lifted when he

  287. threw it towards my direction and I didn't get out of the road

  288. in time. I just smacked me in the hip and

  289. boy what a crunch, what a smack and I went down.

  290. Little did I realise the fact that was going to have in my

  291. life and I could hardly walk, was troubled with pain.

  292. Cut a Long story short and you'll see the reason why I tell

  293. you this. Cut a Long story short, my

  294. mother took me to the doctor's and went to the Children's

  295. Hospital. Professor Weathers and the

  296. couldn't diagnose what was wrong and then somebody said to my

  297. father take him to Ritchie, the football trainer.

  298. And he's a great man of bones and works for the football

  299. teams. And he scooted his job and my

  300. father took me. And I can remember him carrying

  301. me and his back from the car up into the hallway and into the

  302. room where Richie was. And he examined me very

  303. thoroughly. And then he wrote a little

  304. letter and he said, give that to Professor Weathers.

  305. And when I went back to the Children's Hospital to meet

  306. Professor Weathers, a given father given the letter that

  307. Ritchie had written. And he looked at it and he read

  308. it and he examined me again. And then he did a strange thing.

  309. He came out and there was some lady sitting in the front row of

  310. the seat. And he said, ladies, would you

  311. fecate those seats and leave them?

  312. This boy has to lie down immediately and not move and I

  313. wondered what was happening and I laid down and not moved and it

  314. turned out I had a chipped hip bone.

  315. A pertheous hip disease sat in and I was being crippled with

  316. this injury. Now I went in the hospital to

  317. put me in plaster Paris from here right down to my toes and

  318. boys knitting needles were down trying to scratch it and all the

  319. rest of it and it was very uncomfortable and I was like

  320. that lying in the Children's Hospital and got home eventually

  321. after several weeks. Then the had to wear first of

  322. all had to be pushed about in a wheelchair and I hated that.

  323. My brothers though, fellas that would take me down to the park

  324. and I've been just sitting there and they've been playing Cowboys

  325. and Indians and running like ages through the bushes and I

  326. couldn't move. Remember one day I got so fed up

  327. I got out of the wheelchair and I got behind it and I started to

  328. push at home and they came up London St and some women came

  329. over and said some you shouldn't be doing this, get into the

  330. chair, we'll push you back home and I wouldn't do it.

  331. Talk about thick, thickest 2 plants but not as useful.

  332. And I got home and eventually after the wheelchair had the

  333. worst steel calibre of my leg for a long time, limp about with

  334. this boot them with this calibre.

  335. And this was to have a a bad effect on my life, not only

  336. physically but educationally. You see, I didn't do much

  337. schooling those days and I thought it was brilliant one

  338. getting old school all these days.

  339. But then when the Lord called me into service, I hadn't a clue.

  340. And when the Bible sky schooler said the doctor Paisley cut a

  341. Long story short, I feel the Lord is calling me into service

  342. and he says, well, you know, a lot of young people have gone to

  343. the Wack Mystery training College in Glasgow and why don't

  344. you try there? And so I applied and I say this

  345. honestly before God. I prayed that they would turn me

  346. down, actually hoped on my heart of hearts that they would turn

  347. me down. Then I could say I was willing

  348. to obey God, but they turned me down.

  349. And the story, because I knew I had no education.

  350. Then I went to over there for two years, some other fellows

  351. from Ulster. Now, remember, we got English

  352. classes and Miss McDonald, she's a lovely Scottish lady.

  353. And she looked at me and said, Stanley, Mr Barnes, could you

  354. tell us the various kinds of nouns?

  355. You know them all by heart, don't you?

  356. I'm going to ask tonight. You know them all by heart.

  357. And I hadn't a clue. And I said, well, there's low

  358. down, go down and showdown. And I thought being humorous

  359. would Get Me Out of this situation.

  360. Will you talk about a showdown? After the class?

  361. She tore stripes in me. Ask me, did I not pray at the

  362. beginning of the class that God would bless us and help us?

  363. And was she wasting her time? And she really tore strips off

  364. me. Hardly spoke to her for a week

  365. after. But anyway, through it all I had

  366. one prayer. Lord, nail my hand to the plough

  367. with Calvary love the Lord help me never to turn back.

  368. And by the grace of God, God has answered that prayer.

  369. Then cut a Long story short again had to go into a

  370. theological hall and when I finished Bible schooling leave

  371. part of the Testament out there. But anyway, Doctor Paisley said

  372. the everything of becoming the minister of the Free

  373. Presbyterian Church, studying for the ministry, and I toyed

  374. with it and I said, well, I've had thought about it.

  375. Well, I said you should apply and see what happens.

  376. And I applied and was accepted along with Fred Greenfield, Ivan

  377. Foster, Frank McClellan, what a bunch together.

  378. And we were all starched. Willie McRae, We were all

  379. students together in the theological Hall.

  380. And that was a a different experience because the Bible

  381. school well was more complicated and deeper studies and theology

  382. and so on in the theological hall.

  383. But you know the Lord and his mercy and his grace once again

  384. helped. We were able to get through the

  385. exams and eventually I was called, asked to be placed at

  386. Mount Marion C2, Sandra Foreman. Sandra used to play the, I'm

  387. going to say the mouth organ, the organ and Mt Miriam.

  388. It's lovely to see her and Dorothy in the meeting tonight,

  389. but we've got through the exams and I got placed in Mt Miriam

  390. and it was there that I had my Waterloo.

  391. Like Napoleon, I spied this young girl sitting in the

  392. meeting. She was a Sunday school teacher,

  393. and that was Ina Keefe. And the strange thing was this

  394. on a Tuesday, this fella said to me, another student, he says,

  395. you know, there's a girl who goes to your church called Ina

  396. Keefe. The thing they asked her out.

  397. I said she wouldn't, she wouldn't be interested in you.

  398. Totally different person and I put the dampers on and that

  399. Tuesday night, going home from the prayer meeting, I said then

  400. would you mind if I walk your home?

  401. Oh said, not at all, just delighted.

  402. It's not at all. And from that time on we've been

  403. walking together and thank God for a Christian wife who stood

  404. with us right through it all the ups and downs of the Christian

  405. life in the ministry. And if you think the ministry is

  406. an easy job, everybody thinks they're your boss.

  407. I don't know fellas said to me one day, don't forget we pay £3

  408. a week under your church. Just a nasty old piece of work

  409. that's boiled. Felt like giving them a rebate.

  410. But anyway, through all the difficulties of the work the

  411. Lord brought us through and I couldn't look back.

  412. And I can say, great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.

  413. And every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before.

  414. And I'm looking forward to that great day when Christ shall come

  415. again. And Sunday school we had a

  416. teacher who said, I'll give you a shelling.

  417. Have you learned several verses at the beginning of John's

  418. gospel? And I did it as a wee boy, not

  419. that I wanted to learn the Scriptures, but a Bob or a

  420. shelling in those stairs with big money there we boy and I got

  421. the shelling. But you know when I was in the

  422. pubs for when the dancers for fellas.

  423. And I used to sit there and wonder and think of what would

  424. happen if Jesus Christ came and found me in this place drinking.

  425. And even when I went to bed at night I used to pray.

  426. Lord, don't let me die, for I'm not saved.

  427. But I'm so glad that situation was reversed, transfixed, and

  428. there came a time when I came to ask Christ to be my Saviour.

  429. And I can recommend them to you tonight as the friend that

  430. sticketh closer than her brother.

  431. The Christian life is not an easy life.

  432. There's a cross to carry. But as Samuel Rutherford, the

  433. Old Covenanter, said, Christ is always there to carry the heavy

  434. end of the cross. Can I just close with this?

  435. I think there's supper tonight. Don't want it to be your

  436. breakfast, but the Dale Moody the evangelist on one occasion

  437. in Chicago was having one of his great gospel campaigns.

  438. And Moody old was made a public appeal for souls that were

  439. saved. And it's estimated that through

  440. his mentions that he saw over 1,000,000 people converted and

  441. brought their Christ. Incredible ministry.

  442. And one lady made an appeal and there was no response.

  443. And they've been preaching in the words what then shall I do

  444. with Jesus, which is called the Christ.

  445. And he said again the second time, what will you do with

  446. Jesus, which is called the Christ?

  447. Will you accept them? No response.

  448. And then unusual for him, he made the appeal the third time.

  449. And he said, what then shall I do with Jesus, which is called

  450. the Christ? What are you going to do, you

  451. unsafe person? This old man stood up, a man who

  452. had lived in sin in his face and is counted and bore the fairy

  453. marks of sin. And he jumped to his feet and he

  454. stepped out into the eye. And he said, Mr Moody, Mr Moody,

  455. I'll take Jesus home with me. I'll take Jesus home with me.

  456. And that night the old man got saved.

  457. And I'm glad that night in the Emmanuel mission, like that man,

  458. I said, I'll take Jesus home with me.

  459. And the Lord has been with us every step of the journey.

  460. And if you put your trust in him, young or old, thank God

  461. you'll find him. All sufficient for every trial

  462. of life. I trust tonight, if you're here

  463. and you're not saved, I just come and accept the Saviour.

  464. Speak to us even on the minister of the church after the service

  465. and if you are see him, don't be 1/2 hearted Christian.

  466. Be not only saved but surrendered, Be not only

  467. converted but consecrated and take up your cross and follow

  468. the Saviour. Why?

  469. I trust the God will answer prayer.

  470. You've been very patient tonight and thank you for coming.

  471. And I do trust that that simple word of testimony will be a

  472. means of blessing to you this evening.

  473. Thank you so much.
