  1. I believe that was a blessing to many of us this morning.

  2. Would you take the Word of God with me and turn to 1 Thessalonians chapter 5?

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  3. We're beginning our last chapter in 1 Thessalonians as we've been on this book going through for

  4. several months and, well, last couple of months anyway.

  5. And, Lord willing, this Sunday and the next, we will finish up Paul's first letter to the

  6. church in Thessalonica.

  7. 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, we'll read beginning in verse 1 in just a moment.

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  8. Before I get into that, I want to share two verses from Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  9. Luke chapter 12, you don't have to turn there, stay in 1 Thessalonians unless you want to

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  10. flip over quickly, but Luke chapter 12, verse 2, there is nothing covered that won't be uncovered.

    Luke 12:2

  11. Nothing hidden that won't be made known.

  12. Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light.

  13. And what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.

  14. Let's go over to 1 Thessalonians chapter 5 in verse 1.

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  15. About the times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need anything to be written to you.

  16. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord, remember that phrase, will come

  17. just like a thief in the night.

  18. When they say peace and security, then sudden destruction will come upon them like labor pains

  19. on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

  20. But you, brothers and sisters, watch this, are not in the dark for this day to surprise you like a thief.

  21. For you are all children of light and children of the day.

  22. We do not belong to the night or the darkness.

  23. So then, let us not sleep like the rest, but let us stay awake and be self-controlled.

  24. For those who sleep, sleep at night.

  25. And those who get drunk, get drunk at night.

  26. But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled.

  27. And put on the armor of faith and love and a helmet of the hope of salvation.

  28. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  29. who died for us.

  30. So that whether we are awake or asleep, speaking of whether we live or die,

  31. we may live together with him.

  32. Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing.

  33. Would you pray with me?

  34. Lord Jesus, I thank you for your word that pierces to the heart.

  35. I pray that you would shine your light into the dark places.

  36. That you would remind us that we belong to the day.

  37. And it's in Jesus' name we ask it.

  38. Amen.

  39. That's the theme this morning.

  40. We belong to the day.

  41. Taken straight from 1 Thessalonians chapter 5 and verse 1.

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  42. The takeaway I hope that we can all walk out of here with this morning.

  43. The challenge to carry into our week is to let Jesus light up the darkness in and around us.

  44. Let Jesus light up the darkness in and around us.

  45. Back in 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, down there in verse 2, it talks about the day of the Lord.

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  46. So what does it mean when it says the day of the Lord?

  47. What is the day of the Lord?

  48. The day of the Lord is God's future plan of His return, His rapture, His reign, and reckoning.

  49. So what do we mean by that?

  50. We don't know exactly the order or the timing of when these events will take place with certainty.

  51. And if you ask different theologians or different pastors exactly how that's all going to play out,

  52. you'll get a different answer every time just about.

  53. There are all kinds of different views on the millennium, God's thousand-year reign here on earth.

  54. There are all kinds of views, viewpoints on the tribulation time that the Bible says will be happening here on earth.

  55. And even Christians may or may not go through the tribulation time, the church here.

  56. And there's all different kinds of views of what events and at what point of that event is the rapture,

  57. God bringing the church home to heaven.

  58. We don't know exactly when with certainty, but we know it will happen.

  59. God will return.

  60. He will rapture His church.

  61. He will reign.

  62. And there will be a day of reckoning.

  63. There will be a day of judgment.

  64. So that's what it's talking about.

  65. Generally speaking, the day of the Lord.

  66. Malachi chapter 4 and verse 1 references the day of the Lord.

    Malachi 4 chapter mention

  67. It says, look, the day of the Lord is coming, burning like a furnace when all the arrogant and everyone, watch this,

  68. who commits wickedness will become stubble.

  69. The coming day will consume them, says the Lord of armies, not leaving them root or branches.

  70. You think God hates wickedness?

  71. You think God hates darkness?

  72. You think God hates sin?

  73. Oftentimes, we love to cling to the parts of God that are most appealing and attractive to us.

  74. But just like we have to take the whole counsel of this book,

  75. every page, every word inspired by God and given to us for direct application to our life,

  76. we must also take the entire scope of what we read about our God.

  77. You can't pick and choose and cherry pick the parts of God that you like and the parts you don't like.

  78. God hates wickedness.

  79. And in the end, God will judge the wicked.

  80. But then in verse 2 of Malachi chapter 4,

    Malachi 4 chapter mention

  81. But to you who fear my name,

  82. to you who fear my name,

  83. the son of righteousness shall arise with healing in his wings.

  84. Who's he talking about when he says the son of righteousness?

  85. Talk back to me, church.

  86. Jesus.

  87. Thank you.

  88. Whoever said that.

  89. I think it was Aubrey.

  90. There you go.

  91. Good job.

  92. That's right.

  93. The son of righteousness is Jesus.

  94. And he will arise with healing in his wings.

  95. For those who what?

  96. Fear my name.

  97. So the challenge this morning,

  98. walk in the light.

  99. Walk in the light.

  100. Would you turn with me over?

  101. We don't have it on the screens,

  102. and that's intentional.

  103. Would you turn with me over to 1 John chapter 1 and verse 5.

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  104. If you didn't bring a Bible with you,

  105. there's one in the pew back in front of you.

  106. 1 John chapter 1 and verse 5.

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  107. Let's read 1 John 1, 5,

  108. down through verse 7 together.

  109. For sake of time, I'm going to go ahead and read.

  110. This is the message we have heard from him

  111. and declare to you,

  112. God is light.

  113. And there is absolutely no darkness in him.

  114. If we say we have fellowship with him,

  115. and I think just about everybody in this room

  116. would say I have fellowship with God.

  117. You would lump yourself into that category.

  118. So if we say we have fellowship with God,

  119. and yet we walk in darkness,

  120. we are lying.

  121. And are not practicing the truth.

  122. If we walk in the light,

  123. as he himself is in the light,

  124. we have fellowship with one another.

  125. Folks, we cannot have fellowship with one another

  126. if some of us are walking in the light,

  127. and some of us are walking in darkness.

  128. I didn't make that up.

  129. It's in the Bible.

  130. We must be united

  131. in striving every day

  132. to walk in the light of fellowship with God.

  133. And abhor the darkness.

  134. Run from the darkness.

  135. Flee the devil and his wickedness.

  136. Then we have fellowship with one another.

  137. And at the end of verse 7,

  138. the blood of Jesus Christ,

  139. the blood of Jesus his son,

  140. cleanses us from all sin.

  141. That's what cleanses us.

  142. Y'all, we're not talking about living as perfect people.

  143. That will never happen.

  144. As long, and we talked about it last week,

  145. as long as we are wrapped in this sinful flesh,

  146. there will constantly be a struggle

  147. between this flesh and what this flesh wants,

  148. and the spirit inside of us,

  149. and what he wants.

  150. And the key is to win more battles for the spirit

  151. than you lose.

  152. The key is to continue on striving

  153. to listen to the spirit

  154. and not walk in the darkness.

  155. It doesn't mean that sometimes

  156. the darkness isn't going to creep in.

  157. It doesn't mean that sometimes

  158. the darkness isn't going to overwhelm us,

  159. and we have to then turn back

  160. to the spirit.

  161. Every one of us will fall,

  162. but the righteous man falls seven times

  163. and does what?

  164. Rises again.

  165. Gets back up.

  166. You don't walk in the darkness.

  167. You don't live there.

  168. You don't stay there.

  169. You get back in the light

  170. because we belong to the light.

  171. We belong to the day.

  172. God saved us from the darkness.

  173. He saved us from the wickedness.

  174. You aren't trapped by that anymore.

  175. Unless you still are.

  176. Unless you still are trapped by that,

  177. and you're playing church.

  178. You're playing Christian.

  179. You're putting on this front.

  180. You're trying to act like

  181. you're one of God's people,

  182. and you're not.

  183. And you're not hurting anybody

  184. except you.

  185. God loves you.

  186. He wants you.

  187. The invitation is stretched out to you,

  188. and all you have to do

  189. is give up and say yes.

  190. We are to walk in the light.

  191. There's a pastor that I read frequently

  192. from time to time.

  193. He's written some encouraging books,

  194. especially on the Christian life and walk.

  195. And he says,

  196. walking in the light means

  197. we pursue obedience

  198. and are honest

  199. about our remaining darkness.

  200. darkness.

  201. I think that's a great way to put it.

  202. We are not perfect.

  203. There will still be darkness

  204. that creeps in,

  205. but we are honest

  206. about our struggles.

  207. We are honest

  208. about our frailties,

  209. about our weaknesses.

  210. We open up.

  211. We're vulnerable.

  212. And we get one another's help

  213. and God's help

  214. in dealing with it.

  215. Walking in the light

  216. means we pursue God.

  217. We pursue obedience to Him.

  218. And we're honest

  219. about where we fall.

  220. And when we fall,

  221. we can lift each other up.

  222. I might need you to lift me up.

  223. You might need me to lift you up.

  224. You might need one another

  225. to help lift you up.

  226. And fight back

  227. against the darkness.

  228. We're all prone to it.

  229. We're all weak.

  230. But we don't live there.

  231. We don't walk in it.

  232. We don't continue on.

  233. Back in 1 Thessalonians 5,

  234. you, brothers and sisters,

  235. are not in the dark.

  236. You are all children of light,

  237. children of the day.

  238. We do not belong to the night

  239. or the darkness.

  240. Number two,

  241. wake up from sleep.

  242. Walk in the light

  243. and wake up from sleep.

  244. Over in Romans chapter 13.

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  245. And again,

  246. I'd ask you to turn there

  247. if you would.

  248. Romans chapter 13

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  249. and verse 11.

  250. We've got a few verses

  251. to read in Romans chapter 13.

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  252. This is the prime soteriological book

  253. of the Bible.

  254. That just means it has to do

  255. with the doctrine of salvation,

  256. how to be saved.

  257. Romans lays it out for us

  258. that we are wicked,

  259. but God loves us anyway.

  260. He sent his son Jesus

  261. to die for us.

  262. And because of the sacrifice

  263. that Jesus made on the cross for us,

  264. you and I can be saved.

  265. We just have to turn to him,

  266. turn away from our sin,

  267. ask God for forgiveness,

  268. and put all of our faith

  269. that he will save us.

  270. Then,

  271. we can be saved.

  272. And that's what Romans

  273. spends a good deal of time

  274. talking about.

  275. So in chapter 13,

  276. down in verse 11,

  277. besides this,

  278. since you know the time,

  279. it is already the hour

  280. for you to wake up

  281. from sleep.

  282. Because now,

  283. our salvation is nearer

  284. than when we first believed.

  285. The night is nearly over,

  286. and the day is near.

  287. So let us discard,

  288. watch this,

  289. discard the deeds of darkness,

  290. and put on the armor of light.

  291. Let us walk with decency,

  292. as in the daytime,

  293. not in carousing and drunkenness,

  294. not in sexual impurity

  295. and promiscuity,

  296. not in quarreling and jealousy,

  297. but put on the Lord Jesus Christ,

  298. and don't make plans

  299. to gratify the desires of the flesh.

  300. Don't make plans

  301. to gratify the desires of the flesh.

  302. Walk with decency,

  303. as in the daytime.

  304. Discard the deeds of darkness.

  305. Put on, arm yourself,

  306. protect yourself

  307. with the armor of light.

  308. We are equipped

  309. with everything we need

  310. to fight back

  311. against the darkness

  312. that surrounds us.

  313. You walk out of this church,

  314. and the truth is,

  315. you look around inside this church,

  316. and there is darkness.

  317. You walk out in the world around us,

  318. we are bombarded constantly

  319. with darkness,

  320. with wickedness,

  321. with all those things

  322. that we just read about

  323. in Romans 13.

  324. The sexual impurity,

  325. the promiscuity,

  326. the carousing and drunkenness,

  327. quarreling and jealousy,

  328. it finds its way

  329. into the church,

  330. and it's sure enough

  331. outside the church.

  332. It's everywhere.

  333. So how in the world

  334. can we,

  335. who are surrounded

  336. by so much darkness,

  337. live in light?

  338. But we have to arm ourselves.

  339. Put on the whole armor of God

  340. that you can be able

  341. to stand in the evil day.

  342. When all the darts

  343. come against you,

  344. all the temptations

  345. come against you,

  346. you are strong enough

  347. to withstand

  348. if you arm yourself

  349. with the armor of light.

  350. Otherwise,

  351. you're a sitting duck.

  352. You can't fight back

  353. against the powers of darkness,

  354. but with the power of light

  355. inside of you,

  356. it is strong enough.

  357. It is stronger than anything.

  358. Where sin abounded,

  359. grace much more abounded.

  360. God is stronger than the devil.

  361. The spirit is stronger

  362. than your flesh.

  363. But you have to give in

  364. to the spirit.

  365. You have to stop

  366. giving in to the flesh.

  367. You have to say no to yourself.

  368. We all do.

  369. Time and time again,

  370. we will face this battle.

  371. I wish I could say

  372. it's all going to get easier

  373. from here.

  374. But until we get home

  375. to heaven someday,

  376. that's why we look

  377. with such great anticipation

  378. to see our Jesus,

  379. to see our Savior,

  380. to see His second coming

  381. and rapture us home to heaven.

  382. It's going to be wonderful

  383. and finally the battle

  384. will be over.

  385. Finally,

  386. we'll quit losing

  387. these battles.

  388. Finally,

  389. He'll bring us home

  390. to heaven someday.

  391. But until that day,

  392. He did not leave us alone.

  393. He did not leave us abandoned.

  394. He left us with everything

  395. we need.

  396. His Holy Spirit.

  397. His Word,

  398. which contains every instruction

  399. we need for life.

  400. It's there.

  401. What are we going to do with it?

  402. Wake up from sleep.

  403. Walk in the light.

  404. Wake up from your sleep.

  405. Maybe there's people

  406. in here this morning

  407. who are living in the dark.

  408. You're walking in the dark.

  409. Maybe there's people

  410. who are asleep

  411. and it's time to wake up.

  412. It's time to put on

  413. the armor of light.

  414. It's time to walk

  415. in the light

  416. that Jesus gives.

  417. You know who you are.

  418. You know what you've done.

  419. You know whatever it is.

  420. There's no possible way

  421. that I could know

  422. everything that's going on

  423. in your life,

  424. in your heart.

  425. But you do.

  426. And God does.

  427. And He's calling to you

  428. this morning.

  429. He's saying,

  430. I can shine my light

  431. into the dark areas.

  432. Let me do it.

  433. Folks, if you're walking

  434. in darkness,

  435. you know what you're going

  436. to produce?

  437. The fruits of darkness.

  438. If you're walking

  439. in the light,

  440. you're going to produce

  441. the fruit of God's light.

  442. So what are the action steps?

  443. Number one,

  444. find self-control

  445. by daily surrender

  446. to spirit control.

  447. It's a continual battle.

  448. We're always going to face it.

  449. Paul wrote about it

  450. in the book of Romans.

  451. He said,

  452. the things I want to do,

  453. I find myself not doing.

  454. The things I don't want to do,

  455. that's what I find myself doing.

  456. We will all continually

  457. struggle with this,

  458. but it's about giving in

  459. to the Spirit

  460. and surrendering self-control.

  461. You will get yourself

  462. in trouble.

  463. I will get myself in trouble.

  464. The Holy Spirit

  465. is the only one

  466. that will keep me

  467. from being ashamed.

  468. Paul said in Romans 1.16,

  469. I am not ashamed

  470. of the gospel of Christ.

  471. There was plenty other things

  472. in Paul's life

  473. that he had to be ashamed of.

  474. He killed Christians,

  475. for goodness sakes.

  476. I really hope

  477. there's nobody in here

  478. who's killed Christians.

  479. Otherwise,

  480. we've got another problem.

  481. We've got a security team,

  482. though,

  483. so just so you're aware.

  484. Paul had done

  485. terrible,

  486. despicable things

  487. that he was ashamed of,

  488. but he said,

  489. I found one thing

  490. that I'm not ashamed of,

  491. and it's the gospel of Jesus.

  492. And so if you stay

  493. in the light

  494. and you walk in the light,

  495. then you will not

  496. be shamed by that.

  497. You will not hang

  498. your head in shame

  499. when it's revealed

  500. what you've done

  501. in the light.

  502. But how many times

  503. have you and I,

  504. you don't need to raise your hand,

  505. how many times

  506. have you and I

  507. been ashamed

  508. of what we did in the dark?

  509. So we must find

  510. self-control by how?

  511. Man, you say,

  512. you figured out

  513. the secret to self-control?

  514. That's great, man.

  515. You should go make

  516. a billion dollars

  517. and sell a bunch of books

  518. and speak at a bunch

  519. of conferences.

  520. It's by surrendering

  521. to spirit control.

  522. I'm sorry,

  523. I wish there was

  524. an easier answer,

  525. but there's not.

  526. For you or for me,

  527. we must surrender

  528. to the Holy Spirit

  529. and give up self.

  530. Secondly,

  531. find an accountability partner.

  532. That's where it gets sticky.

  533. You can't fight

  534. this battle alone.

  535. God never intended

  536. for you to fight

  537. this battle alone.

  538. You've got darkness

  539. that's overwhelming you.

  540. It's beating you up.

  541. You can't seem

  542. to shake it.

  543. You can't seem

  544. to find the light.

  545. You need help.

  546. This church

  547. is here to help.

  548. We're not a trophy club.

  549. We're a hospital.

  550. But sometimes we act

  551. more like a trophy club.

  552. There are people

  553. all throughout this church

  554. who would love

  555. to help you

  556. bear your burden.

  557. Keep it confident.

  558. Keep it quiet.

  559. Deal with it only

  560. in the circles

  561. it needs to be dealt with.

  562. But we,

  563. as the body of Christ,

  564. are here to help

  565. and are called

  566. to help one another.

  567. If you're ignoring

  568. that help,

  569. that's on you.

  570. It's not on us.

  571. Find self-control

  572. by daily surrender

  573. to spirit control.

  574. Find an accountability

  575. partner.

  576. I'd be happy to do it.

  577. I'd be happy

  578. to help you

  579. find someone else.

  580. Someone you love.

  581. Someone you trust.

  582. Someone who you know

  583. and loves you.

  584. Cares about you.

  585. So the takeaway is

  586. let Jesus

  587. light up

  588. the darkness

  589. in and around you.

  590. It's a hard sermon

  591. to preach

  592. but we're preaching

  593. the text

  594. as it comes up.

  595. We are not

  596. children of the dark.

  597. So let us not

  598. walk in the darkness.

  599. Let us not live

  600. publicly

  601. or privately

  602. like those

  603. without Christ.

  604. let Jesus

  605. shine his light

  606. because God

  607. wants to do

  608. incredible things.

  609. Bear incredible

  610. fruit

  611. of his light

  612. in your life.

  613. We belong

  614. to the day.

  615. Let's pray together.

  616. Lord Jesus

  617. I don't know

  618. what's on every heart

  619. this morning.

  620. I know what's on mine.

  621. I just ask

  622. that you would

  623. convict us

  624. God

  625. as only

  626. you are able

  627. shine your light

  628. into the dark

  629. places.

  630. In our hearts

  631. around us

  632. there's people

  633. who want to share

  634. the gospel

  635. with others

  636. in their

  637. neighborhood

  638. in their

  639. community

  640. at their

  641. workplace

  642. and it just

  643. seems like

  644. they're surrounded

  645. by darkness.

  646. Every time

  647. we wake up

  648. in this world

  649. it seems like

  650. there's so little

  651. light

  652. but your light

  653. is more powerful

  654. than the darkness.

  655. Remind us of that.

  656. Let us not be

  657. overcome

  658. by the darkness.

  659. Let us not

  660. be overwhelmed

  661. by the night.

  662. Joy comes

  663. in the morning.

  664. You do

  665. incredible things

  666. with sunrises

  667. if we study

  668. the scriptures.

  669. You can make

  670. a sunrise

  671. in our day.

  672. we claim

  673. the healing

  674. from the

  675. sun of

  676. righteousness

  677. that you

  678. mentioned

  679. in Malachi.

  680. God I ask

  681. that you would

  682. convict hearts

  683. convict my heart

  684. shine your light

  685. into the darkest

  686. areas of our

  687. hearts

  688. illuminate it

  689. and then help

  690. us to take

  691. the steps

  692. needed.

  693. Daily go to

  694. the word

  695. daily go to

  696. you in prayer.

  697. Find an

  698. accountability

  699. partner

  700. and daily

  701. go to

  702. seek spirit

  703. control over

  704. self-control.

  705. Lord we need

  706. it.

  707. This town

  708. doesn't need

  709. any more

  710. fruits of

  711. darkness.

  712. Our families

  713. don't need

  714. any more

  715. fruits of

  716. darkness.

  717. This church

  718. sure doesn't

  719. need any

  720. more fruits

  721. of darkness.

  722. Shine the

  723. light God.

  724. There's

  725. somebody here

  726. who says

  727. God has

  728. never

  729. shined his

  730. light into

  731. my heart.

  732. prayer.

  733. I need to

  734. ask him to

  735. forgive my

  736. sins.

  737. Put my

  738. faith in

  739. him to

  740. save me.

  741. Would you

  742. slip your

  743. hand up

  744. right now?

  745. Nobody's

  746. looking around

  747. but I'd

  748. like to see

  749. you and

  750. pray for

  751. you.

  752. Would you

  753. slip your

  754. hand up

  755. right now?

  756. I need

  757. to ask

  758. Jesus to

  759. forgive me

  760. of my

  761. sins.

  762. Put all

  763. my faith

  764. in him

  765. as my

  766. savior.

  767. Thank you.

  768. You can put

  769. your hands

  770. down.

  771. God,

  772. I mean if

  773. you would

  774. say I

  775. need prayer.

  776. I'm not

  777. going to

  778. get specific

  779. of what

  780. it is but

  781. I need

  782. prayer.

  783. Would you

  784. slip your

  785. hand up

  786. this morning?

  787. Thank you.

  788. God,

  789. you know

  790. every heart

  791. and you know

  792. every situation.

  793. Just ask

  794. that you

  795. would convict

  796. us through

  797. your scriptures.

  798. Let us

  799. walk in the

  800. light God.

  801. it's in

  802. Jesus'

  803. name we

  804. ask it.

  805. Amen.

  806. Brother

  807. Gray.
