  1. How many of y'all glad you came to church this morning?

  2. Would you slip your hand up?

  3. Yeah, awesome.

  4. Well, we're glad you're here too.

  5. Would you take your Bibles with me and turn to Ephesians,

  6. Paul's letter to the church in Ephesus,

  7. the book of Ephesians.

  8. We are gonna get through the first chapter today.

  9. We're not starting a new series on the book of Ephesians.

  10. We're just gonna stay in chapter one today,

  11. and in the future we'll be in other passages

  12. that have to do with the church, with us.

  13. All right, so that is what we are doing

  14. every time we come here and we gather in this assembly,

  15. we are doing church.

  16. If you have kids that normally be dismissed

  17. and you haven't done that yet,

  18. go ahead and send those kids off to children's church

  19. at this time.

  20. I believe that's four years old and under.

  21. For children's church.

  22. All right, so Ephesians chapter one.

  23. This morning I'm reading from the English Standard Version.

  24. It should be very close to what you're reading.

  25. And let's get into it.

  26. Verse one, Ephesians one.

  27. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,

  28. to the saints who are in Ephesus

  29. and are faithful in Christ Jesus,

  30. grace to you and peace from God our Father

  31. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  32. So he's addressing the church in Ephesus.

  33. Now we know from the instruction all throughout Scripture

  34. in the New Testament,

  35. the Bible was not just written

  36. to its intended recipients at that moment.

  37. It was written to all of us across all of time.

  38. It was God's love letter to mankind,

  39. God's instruction manual to mankind.

  40. And it is just as relevant to us today

  41. as it has ever been.

  42. So we're gonna be studying throughout this passage

  43. and many more to follow over the next several weeks.

  44. What does it mean to be the church?

  45. We are the church.

  46. We call ourselves that.

  47. It's out on our sign.

  48. We invite people to church.

  49. We say, I go to this church.

  50. And what does that mean?

  51. What does that entail?

  52. What exactly are we saying

  53. when we are saying that we are a church?

  54. So this is gonna be a study in practical theology.

  55. What is theology?

  56. It is the study of God, theos.

  57. It is a study of God.

  58. And so this is the practical side of theology,

  59. not just the academic side,

  60. not just the research side.

  61. This is the actual everyday practical

  62. life application side of theology.

  63. This is the concept behind the sermon today

  64. and the series really.

  65. We don't just go to church.

  66. We are the church.

  67. Would you say that with me now?

  68. We don't just go to church.

  69. We are the church.

  70. We can do a better job than that.

  71. Here we go, ready?

  72. We don't just go to church.

  73. We are the church.

  74. Yes, we are.

  75. The church is not a building.

  76. It is the bride of Christ.

  77. It is not just a place.

  78. It is a people.

  79. It's a gathering.

  80. It's an assembly.

  81. It's a called out body of believers.

  82. So where do we get the word that we use for church?

  83. It comes from the biblical word, the Greek word, ekklesia.

  84. How many of you guys can read Greek?

  85. I figure there might be a couple people in here who could.

  86. You just never know.

  87. That's all right.

  88. There's the Greek version up there.

  89. And then you can see the English lettering below.

  90. Ekklesia.

  91. It means an assembly, a congregation, a gathering.

  92. This word would have been normal and understandable

  93. to those back in the day that it was written thousands of years ago.

  94. However, for us today, we understand it as a meeting together,

  95. a gathering together, an assembling of people.

  96. It's a congregation.

  97. So we are the church.

  98. The doctrine of the church is called ecclesiology.

  99. That's where we get that word from, ecclesiology,

  100. from the biblical word, ekklesia.

  101. Ekklesia.

  102. So it is the doctrine of that gathering,

  103. that assembling of believers in Jesus.

  104. We're going to be in Ephesians 1.

  105. And I had my new King James, and then I left it at home,

  106. so I grabbed my English standard.

  107. That was my backup in my office.

  108. So that's what we're doing today.

  109. That's all right.

  110. So let's look at verses.

  111. Jump down.

  112. Tell you what, we'll just read it.

  113. We left off in verse 2.

  114. Let's pick it up in verse 3.

  115. We're going to pay special attention to verses 4 and 5.

  116. Verse 3, Ephesians 1.

  117. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  118. who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

  119. even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world,

  120. that we should be holy and blameless before Him.

  121. Verse 5.

  122. In love He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ,

  123. according to the purpose of His will.

  124. So we see in verses 4 and 5, God chooses us.

  125. So the idea here is it's not about us, it's about God.

  126. We didn't merit God's grace and favor by some amazing feat that we performed

  127. or some sinlessness that we achieved.

  128. There is nothing like that.

  129. God chose us.

  130. We can't earn God's grace.

  131. There's nothing good enough that any of you or I could ever do

  132. to merit or earn the grace of God.

  133. God chooses us.

  134. So let's jump back to verse 3.

  135. We'll see it in just a second here.

  136. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  137. who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing.

  138. Okay, now jump down to verse 7.

  139. We left off in 5, didn't we?

  140. Let's read 6, then we'll get to 7 and 8.

  141. Here we go.

  142. Verse 6.

  143. To the praise of His glorious grace,

  144. with which He has blessed us in the Beloved.

  145. Now verse 7.

  146. Here we go.

  147. In Him, in Christ, in Jesus,

  148. in Him we have redemption through His blood.

  149. The forgiveness of our trespasses,

  150. according to the riches of His grace.

  151. Verse 8.

  152. Which He lavished upon us in all wisdom and insight.

  153. So the truth we're drawing from this is God freely gives to us.

  154. God chooses us and He freely gives to us.

  155. We couldn't earn His grace and we can't earn His favor.

  156. We can't earn His blessings.

  157. We can't earn God's gifts to us.

  158. We couldn't earn the free gift of salvation which He offered to us.

  159. And we can't earn all the grace that He lavishes on us day in and day out.

  160. We can't earn His favor.

  161. Now verse 9.

  162. Making known to us the mystery of His will,

  163. according to His purpose,

  164. which He set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time

  165. to unite all things in Him,

  166. things in heaven and things on the earth.

  167. In Him we have obtained an inheritance,

  168. having been predestined according to the purpose of Him

  169. who works all things according to the counsel of His will,

  170. not ours.

  171. You catch that?

  172. He works all things according to the counsel of His will.

  173. He doesn't need to consult us on what to do.

  174. He's got it all figured out.

  175. He's got His will set, determined,

  176. before the foundation of the world.

  177. And that's what He works things according to that purpose.

  178. Now verse 12.

  179. So that we who were the first to hope in Christ

  180. might be to the praise of His glory.

  181. Verse 13.

  182. In Him you also,

  183. when you heard the word of truth,

  184. the gospel of your salvation,

  185. and believed in Him,

  186. were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

  187. Check this one out.

  188. God saves us for His glory.

  189. We have no bragging rights.

  190. God redeems us,

  191. saves us,

  192. grants us that saving grace,

  193. that washing of our sins

  194. by His blood.

  195. And friend, if you're sitting here this morning

  196. and you're not sure what I'm talking about,

  197. you need to get sure before you leave today.

  198. You need to come down,

  199. talk to us after the service,

  200. come talk,

  201. I will stop everything else I'm doing

  202. and talk to you

  203. about how God can save you,

  204. how God can forgive you,

  205. how He can redeem you.

  206. That is step number one.

  207. And nothing else matters.

  208. All the songs,

  209. all the building,

  210. all the everything we do in church

  211. doesn't matter

  212. if you are not born again,

  213. the Bible says.

  214. Saved.

  215. Becoming a child of God.

  216. That is number one.

  217. Or else everything else.

  218. is just distracting from that.

  219. Everything else is pretending

  220. that that's who you are

  221. and you're really not.

  222. So that is the most important step.

  223. And God saves us for His glory.

  224. He does it to glorify Himself.

  225. Jesus said,

  226. I glorify the Father.

  227. The Father has glorified me

  228. and I glorify the Father.

  229. You and I have no bragging rights.

  230. There's nothing that we could do

  231. to earn God's favor.

  232. Look over in chapter 2

  233. and verse 8 real quick.

  234. Cross the page,

  235. chapter 2 and verse 8.

  236. By grace,

  237. you have been saved

  238. through faith.

  239. This is not your own doing.

  240. It is the gift of God.

  241. Not of works.

  242. Not a result of works.

  243. So that no one may,

  244. what's that word?

  245. Boast.

  246. There's no boasting.

  247. There's no bragging rights.

  248. Look at me.

  249. I'm a child of God.

  250. Well, that makes me wonder

  251. if you are.

  252. Because a child of God

  253. would understand

  254. that He didn't do anything

  255. to become one.

  256. He was adopted.

  257. That process

  258. was born of God.

  259. It was carried through by God.

  260. And it will be sustained

  261. by God alone.

  262. Now,

  263. let's pick it up

  264. in verse 14.

  265. Who is the guarantee,

  266. the Holy Spirit,

  267. who is the guarantee

  268. of our inheritance

  269. until we acquire possession of it

  270. to the praise of His glory?

  271. Verse 15.

  272. For this reason,

  273. because I have heard of your faith

  274. in the Lord Jesus

  275. and your love toward all the saints,

  276. I do not cease

  277. to give thanks for you,

  278. remembering you in my prayers

  279. that the God

  280. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  281. the Father of glory,

  282. may give you a spirit of wisdom

  283. and of revelation

  284. in the knowledge of Him.

  285. Having the eyes

  286. of your hearts enlightened

  287. that you may know

  288. what is the hope

  289. to which He has called you,

  290. what are the riches

  291. of His glorious inheritance

  292. in the saints,

  293. and what is the immeasurable greatness

  294. of His power

  295. toward us who believe

  296. according to the working

  297. of His great might.

  298. God works through us.

  299. You and I have no

  300. boastworthy accomplishments.

  301. There's nothing

  302. that we can boast in

  303. that we accomplish for God.

  304. He does it all through us.

  305. That's why He gets the glory.

  306. In all things,

  307. He is to have the preeminence

  308. all throughout our lives.

  309. Pick it up in verse 20.

  310. The working of His great might

  311. that He worked in Christ

  312. when He raised Him

  313. from the dead

  314. and seated Him

  315. at His right hand

  316. in the heavenly places.

  317. Far above all rule

  318. and authority

  319. and power and dominion

  320. and above every name

  321. that is named,

  322. not only in this age

  323. but also in the one to come.

  324. And He put all things

  325. under His feet

  326. and gave Him as head

  327. over all things

  328. to the church.

  329. Did you catch that?

  330. He put all things

  331. under His feet

  332. and gave Him, Jesus,

  333. as head over all things

  334. to the church

  335. which is His body,

  336. the fullness of Him

  337. who fills all in all.

  338. Verses 20 through 23,

  339. the end of this chapter,

  340. teach us

  341. God is the head

  342. of all things

  343. in the church.

  344. He is the head

  345. of the church.

  346. He is the head

  347. of everything

  348. that's in the church.

  349. He is the head

  350. of everyone in the church,

  351. everything else

  352. is under His feet.

  353. He is the head

  354. of the church.

  355. It's not about you

  356. and it's not about me.

  357. So that is the lesson

  358. for today.

  359. The church

  360. is not about me.

  361. The church

  362. is not about me.

  363. Would you join me

  364. if you're able to

  365. in saying that

  366. with me ready?

  367. The church

  368. is not about me.

  369. Now we can say that

  370. and we might believe that,

  371. we might want

  372. to believe that,

  373. but sometimes

  374. it's hard

  375. to live that way.

  376. We are the church,

  377. but the church

  378. is not about us.

  379. If you're taking notes

  380. this morning,

  381. jot this down

  382. if you would.

  383. My primary role

  384. in the church

  385. is to glorify God.

  386. My primary role

  387. in the church

  388. is to glorify God.

  389. Back in Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  390. chapter 1,

  391. we read it a moment ago

  392. in verse 12.

  393. I like how the

  394. Revised Standard Version

  395. reads this.

  396. They're all good.

  397. Sometimes the phrasing

  398. is just slightly different

  399. and I love how clear

  400. this makes it.

  401. Verse 12,

  402. we who had first

  403. hoped in Christ

  404. have been destined

  405. and appointed

  406. to live for the praise

  407. of His glory.

  408. That's because

  409. the church

  410. is not about me.

  411. My primary purpose

  412. in this church

  413. and on this earth

  414. is to glorify God.

  415. Now this is a Baptist church,

  416. right?

  417. The Baptists,

  418. our creed is the Bible.

  419. Our only creed

  420. is the Bible.

  421. Our only,

  422. you know,

  423. thing that we build

  424. our lives around,

  425. our foundation

  426. of all of our lives

  427. is the Bible.

  428. There are other churches

  429. and denominations

  430. that will adopt

  431. confessions or creeds

  432. that take the Bible

  433. and kind of put it

  434. in their words

  435. and we say,

  436. this is what we hold to.

  437. And that's fine.

  438. I'm not judging them

  439. for that.

  440. Actually,

  441. sometimes those

  442. can be very helpful

  443. summaries

  444. of biblical beliefs.

  445. And one of the most

  446. effective ones

  447. and long-standing ones

  448. is the Westminster

  449. Shorter Catechism

  450. and it says,

  451. the chief end of man

  452. is to glorify God

  453. and enjoy Him forever.

  454. The chief end of man

  455. is to glorify God

  456. and enjoy Him forever.

  457. You got to smile

  458. when you say that

  459. because you can't enjoy God.

  460. There's nothing wrong

  461. with that.

  462. Sometimes when you meet

  463. Christians who have been

  464. Christians for a long time,

  465. many, many years

  466. and decades

  467. and it just seems like

  468. they have a perennial frown

  469. on their face.

  470. Like, man,

  471. have you been enjoying God

  472. all that time?

  473. Maybe you've been missing

  474. your chief end.

  475. Maybe you haven't been

  476. enjoying God as much

  477. because you haven't been

  478. glorifying God

  479. as much.

  480. So that is

  481. my primary purpose

  482. in this church

  483. is to glorify God.

  484. Number two,

  485. I glorify God the most

  486. when I glorify me

  487. the least.

  488. That's a hard truth

  489. to accept, y'all.

  490. We want to make

  491. ourselves look good.

  492. We put on our best clothes.

  493. We take a bath

  494. every once in a while

  495. or a shower.

  496. Those are more effective

  497. sometimes.

  498. We put on smell good,

  499. you know.

  500. We try to wash our clothes

  501. and iron them

  502. and look good.

  503. Today,

  504. I wore waiters

  505. in the baptistry

  506. for the first time.

  507. These other baptisms

  508. that have happened,

  509. I brought a change of clothes.

  510. That's why it takes me

  511. so long to get back out here

  512. because I changed clothes

  513. and changed back into

  514. all the full suit

  515. and everything.

  516. And I went out

  517. and got some waiters

  518. and so I wore those in

  519. and I forgot

  520. that the waiters

  521. don't cover your arm.

  522. So I'm thinking,

  523. man, I don't have

  524. to get undressed, you know.

  525. I'm just going to

  526. put my waiters on

  527. and here we go.

  528. And you can't really see it

  529. but let me just tell you,

  530. this entire side of me

  531. is soaked

  532. from the waist up.

  533. So I thought I would

  534. just come clean.

  535. Shane and Kadron,

  536. you know,

  537. they were back there with me

  538. and they're just trying

  539. not to laugh

  540. and be nice.

  541. Coming clean.

  542. Here we go.

  543. But you know,

  544. I was trying to show y'all

  545. look like I had it all together.

  546. It's like if I keep my

  547. coat button

  548. then nobody will see.

  549. My shirt is wet.

  550. We try to put on

  551. the best version of ourselves.

  552. We try to present ourselves

  553. the best possible way

  554. and that's just how we are

  555. and there's nothing wrong

  556. with that.

  557. But listen,

  558. there's got to be

  559. a mind shift

  560. for God's people

  561. that says,

  562. I glorify God the most

  563. when I glorify me

  564. the least.

  565. How do we know that?

  566. Is that in the Bible?

  567. Well, yes it is.

  568. John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  569. in verse 30.

  570. He must increase,

  571. I must decrease.

  572. Where's Harlan?

  573. Is Harlan in here?

  574. There you go.

  575. What time is it?

  576. There we go.

  577. Some of them

  578. were a little shy

  579. but yeah,

  580. Harlan started teaching them

  581. that at VBS,

  582. Vacation Bible School

  583. and he said,

  584. what time is it?

  585. And the kid would say,

  586. John 3, 30.

  587. He must increase,

  588. I must decrease.

  589. He's got them down

  590. with that.

  591. Austin does it sometimes.

  592. The other day,

  593. I was actually asking

  594. what time it was

  595. and Austin just busts out,

  596. he must increase,

  597. I must decrease.

  598. John 3, 30.

  599. I was like,

  600. that's great man,

  601. but what time is it?

  602. I need to know

  603. what time it is.

  604. Anyway,

  605. that is a biblical concept.

  606. We glorify God the most

  607. when we glorify ourselves

  608. the least.

  609. Verse 31,

  610. the one who comes

  611. from above

  612. is above all.

  613. Do you sense a theme here?

  614. A trend?

  615. God is above everything

  616. in the church.

  617. He is above everything,

  618. everywhere,

  619. all people,

  620. each one of us.

  621. God is above.

  622. He must increase,

  623. but I must decrease.

  624. The one who is from the earth

  625. is earthly.

  626. That's us.

  627. That was John the Baptist.

  628. Speaks in earthly terms.

  629. That's all the prophets.

  630. That's all the great people

  631. that we read about in Scripture,

  632. all the heroes of the Bible,

  633. and that's you and me.

  634. We are earthly.

  635. We speak.

  636. We think.

  637. We act in earthly terms,

  638. but the one who comes from heaven

  639. acts in heavenly terms,

  640. speaks in heavenly terms.

  641. He is above it all,

  642. but he didn't just stay in heaven.

  643. He came down.

  644. He was born as a baby.

  645. He grew up.

  646. He went through

  647. all of the difficulty of life

  648. that you and I do.

  649. He went through all the temptation,

  650. all the struggle.

  651. He subjected himself

  652. to this sinful world,

  653. and yet he did it without sin.

  654. He maintained his deity.

  655. He maintained his Godhead,

  656. but he took on flesh,

  657. humbled himself,

  658. became a servant,

  659. and set that as the example

  660. for us to do,

  661. to humble ourselves,

  662. to become a servant,

  663. to understand it's not about me.

  664. It's about God.

  665. So we are the church.

  666. My primary role in this church

  667. is to glorify God.

  668. Glorify God the most

  669. when I glorify myself the least.

  670. And then number three,

  671. I cannot glorify God

  672. if I'm holding a grudge.

  673. I can't glorify God

  674. if I'm holding a grudge

  675. because then God ceases to be God.

  676. I'm allowing something else

  677. to take precedence over God in my life.

  678. So I cannot glorify God

  679. if I'm holding a grudge

  680. against someone else.

  681. God is forgiveness.

  682. God is all about forgiveness.

  683. He forgave the worst of us.

  684. He forgave the best of us

  685. who are actually the worst.

  686. There is no one who is good.

  687. There is no one who is perfect.

  688. There is no one who is sinless.

  689. And God forgave all of it.

  690. So we have no excuse

  691. to hold a grudge

  692. and say,

  693. I won't forgive.

  694. Romans chapter 15 deals with this.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  695. Romans 15 verses 5 and 6.

    Romans 15:5

  696. Now may the God

  697. who gives endurance

  698. and encouragement

  699. grant you

  700. to live in harmony

  701. with one another

  702. according to Christ Jesus.

  703. Live in harmony with one another

  704. according to Christ Jesus.

  705. God can grant us

  706. the ability to do that.

  707. Verse 6.

  708. So that you may glorify

  709. the God and Father

  710. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  711. with one mind

  712. and one voice.

  713. Is God glorified

  714. if His people come here

  715. and lift their voices together

  716. and sing songs of praise

  717. to God together

  718. and then walk out these doors

  719. and fight

  720. and bicker

  721. and talk about each other

  722. behind our backs

  723. and run each other down.

  724. Can God be glorified?

  725. Because we're not of one mind

  726. and one voice.

  727. We might seem like we are

  728. when we're all gathered here

  729. in the sanctuary.

  730. But when we walk out

  731. the world will see

  732. if we're glorifying God

  733. living in harmony

  734. with one another.

  735. So I cannot glorify God

  736. if I give

  737. if I hold a grudge.

  738. Proverbs chapter 19

    Proverbs 19 chapter mention

  739. gives

  740. the entire book of Proverbs

  741. gives life advice to us

  742. and this is a particularly

  743. applicable one

  744. to this point.

  745. A person's insight

  746. gives him patience

  747. and his virtue

  748. is to overlook

  749. an offense.

  750. It is a virtue

  751. to overlook

  752. an offense.

  753. God knows

  754. offenses will happen.

  755. You will get offended.

  756. Others will offend

  757. you

  758. and guess what?

  759. You will offend others.

  760. You will offend others.

  761. And we always love

  762. when someone

  763. overlooks

  764. our offense.

  765. But it's hard for us

  766. to overlook others.

  767. Is that not right?

  768. But that shows

  769. your insight

  770. into God.

  771. That shows

  772. your insight

  773. your connection

  774. to the heart of God

  775. when we're patient

  776. with each other.

  777. When we overlook

  778. an offense.

  779. Not everything

  780. has to get dealt with.

  781. Not every wrong

  782. has to get righted.

  783. Jesus took

  784. every wrong

  785. on himself.

  786. And he didn't come

  787. with the hammer

  788. of justice

  789. and beat back

  790. the Romans

  791. who were oppressing

  792. his people.

  793. He didn't come

  794. and fix

  795. every injustice

  796. that had happened

  797. in this world.

  798. But he paid

  799. the price

  800. for all the sin

  801. for all of us.

  802. because we're

  803. all equally bad.

  804. Maybe you and I

  805. haven't killed somebody

  806. like somebody else has.

  807. Maybe we haven't

  808. taken advantage

  809. of a minor

  810. or someone

  811. who is defenseless.

  812. There are certainly

  813. degrees to sin

  814. in how bad

  815. they are.

  816. But the truth is

  817. it's all bad

  818. and it's all

  819. earning the same

  820. punishment.

  821. Which is eternal

  822. death

  823. in the lake of fire

  824. we call hell.

  825. God takes

  826. sin seriously.

  827. So seriously

  828. Jesus had to die

  829. for it.

  830. He gave his own life.

  831. Who are we

  832. to say

  833. I won't forgive

  834. that sin.

  835. That sin

  836. that Jesus

  837. died for

  838. that sin

  839. that Jesus

  840. shed his life

  841. blood for

  842. cried out.

  843. I love what

  844. Cajun said

  845. in the baptism

  846. that Jesus

  847. looked at his father

  848. and said

  849. my God

  850. why have you

  851. forsaken me?

  852. The torment

  853. the anguish

  854. that our Savior

  855. endured

  856. for that sin

  857. that's got you

  858. hung up.

  859. Can't forgive it.

  860. Can't glorify God

  861. until we forgive it.

  862. You didn't think

  863. you'd see Buddy Hackett

  864. in church did you?

  865. Younger people

  866. don't worry about it.

  867. He said

  868. don't carry a grudge

  869. while you're out

  870. carrying the grudge

  871. the other guy's

  872. out there dancing.

  873. There is a lot of

  874. truth to that

  875. isn't there?

  876. Sometimes we can

  877. carry a grudge

  878. for months

  879. for years

  880. for decades

  881. and the other person

  882. has long forgot it.

  883. The only person

  884. that's hurting

  885. at that point

  886. is us.

  887. But you know what

  888. there's more to that.

  889. The only person

  890. that's hurting

  891. is us

  892. and those we interact

  893. with

  894. those who love us

  895. those who care about us

  896. those who want to help

  897. it's affecting

  898. more and more

  899. ripples around us

  900. when we carry

  901. a grudge.

  902. John Stott

  903. is one of my

  904. personal favorite

  905. theologians

  906. and he wrote this book

  907. called Basic Christianity

  908. and I like his

  909. application of it

  910. maybe a little bit

  911. better than Buddy Hackett's.

  912. He says

  913. most quarrels

  914. are due to a

  915. misunderstanding

  916. and the misunderstanding

  917. is due to our

  918. failure to appreciate

  919. the other person's

  920. point of view.

  921. It is more natural

  922. to us

  923. to talk

  924. than to listen

  925. to argue

  926. than to submit.

  927. Many conflicts

  928. could be resolved

  929. if both sides

  930. first examine

  931. themselves critically

  932. and then examine

  933. the other side

  934. charitably.

  935. Did you catch

  936. the difference there?

  937. Examine ourselves

  938. critically

  939. and then examine

  940. the other side

  941. charitably

  942. rather than

  943. our normal practice

  944. of being charitable

  945. to ourselves

  946. and critical

  947. of others.

  948. Our outlook

  949. is one-sided.

  950. We exaggerate

  951. the virtues

  952. in ourselves

  953. and the vices

  954. in others.

  955. So

  956. my primary role

  957. in the church

  958. is to glorify God.

  959. I glorify God

  960. the most

  961. when I glorify me

  962. the least

  963. and I cannot glorify

  964. God

  965. if I hold

  966. a grudge.

  967. What are the takeaways?

  968. Church is about God

  969. it's not about me.

  970. The church

  971. is for us.

  972. We identify

  973. as the church

  974. but it's not

  975. about us.

  976. We are not

  977. to receive

  978. the glory.

  979. It is not

  980. established

  981. to promote

  982. us.

  983. It is not

  984. established

  985. to make us

  986. look good

  987. in this community.

  988. it's not

  989. established

  990. for us

  991. to feel

  992. good

  993. about

  994. ourselves.

  995. The church

  996. is about God

  997. not me.

  998. I wrote down

  999. some thoughts

  1000. and I want to

  1001. share them

  1002. with you

  1003. before we

  1004. leave.

  1005. the church

  1006. is not

  1007. a social

  1008. club.

  1009. The church

  1010. is not

  1011. a country

  1012. club.

  1013. The church

  1014. is not

  1015. a book

  1016. club

  1017. or a fan

  1018. club

  1019. or a secret

  1020. club

  1021. definitely

  1022. not a night

  1023. club

  1024. and it's

  1025. not a trophy

  1026. club.

  1027. The church

  1028. is a blood

  1029. bought

  1030. called out

  1031. sanctified

  1032. living

  1033. breathing

  1034. body

  1035. of born

  1036. again

  1037. believers

  1038. in Jesus

  1039. who are

  1040. set apart

  1041. to love

  1042. God

  1043. to seek

  1044. truth

  1045. and to

  1046. serve

  1047. people

  1048. by spreading

  1049. the good

  1050. news

  1051. of salvation

  1052. by God's

  1053. grace

  1054. through our

  1055. faith.

  1056. We give

  1057. them the

  1058. gospel

  1059. we baptize

  1060. them

  1061. we remember

  1062. Christ's

  1063. sacrifice

  1064. at the

  1065. Lord's

  1066. supper

  1067. and we

  1068. teach them

  1069. to follow

  1070. Jesus

  1071. according to

  1072. the whole

  1073. counsel

  1074. of the

  1075. word

  1076. of God.

  1077. That's

  1078. what the

  1079. church

  1080. is

  1081. and the

  1082. gates

  1083. of hell

  1084. will not

  1085. prevail

  1086. against it

  1087. and if

  1088. your idea

  1089. of church

  1090. doesn't fit

  1091. that

  1092. then I'm

  1093. sorry

  1094. but you've

  1095. got the

  1096. wrong idea

  1097. of church

  1098. it's not

  1099. about you

  1100. it's never

  1101. been about

  1102. you

  1103. and it

  1104. will never

  1105. be about

  1106. you

  1107. it's always

  1108. going to be

  1109. about him

  1110. in all

  1111. things

  1112. he gets

  1113. the preeminence

  1114. we get that

  1115. from Colossians

  1116. 118

  1117. which says

  1118. Jesus is

  1119. the head

  1120. of the body

  1121. the head

  1122. of the church

  1123. in everything

  1124. he might be

  1125. preeminent

  1126. you want to know

  1127. why you're unhappy

  1128. why you're

  1129. unsatisfied

  1130. why you keep

  1131. getting bent out

  1132. of shape

  1133. why people keep

  1134. getting under

  1135. your skin

  1136. it's because

  1137. you're flipped

  1138. upside down

  1139. God is not

  1140. God is not in

  1141. first place

  1142. when it comes

  1143. to your pet

  1144. peeve

  1145. your golden

  1146. calf

  1147. so to speak

  1148. you've got

  1149. your favorite

  1150. pew

  1151. your favorite

  1152. class

  1153. your favorite

  1154. teacher

  1155. your favorite

  1156. song

  1157. and nobody

  1158. better mess

  1159. with that

  1160. or you'll make

  1161. sure they know

  1162. that they

  1163. messed up

  1164. aren't you

  1165. just God's

  1166. gift

  1167. to God's

  1168. people

  1169. what on earth

  1170. would this church

  1171. do without you

  1172. I'll tell you

  1173. what it might do

  1174. it might grow

  1175. the Holy Spirit

  1176. might take over

  1177. and have room

  1178. to work

  1179. if your spirit

  1180. of pride

  1181. and contentiousness

  1182. ever got out of

  1183. the way long

  1184. enough

  1185. for God to do

  1186. something

  1187. this goes for me

1188. and it goes for you

  1189. every one of us

  1190. it's not about us

  1191. finally

  1192. you know why

  1193. the church isn't

  1194. about you

  1195. because your name

  1196. can't break

  1197. an addiction

  1198. but the name

  1199. of Jesus

  1200. can

  1201. your name

  1202. can't put a

  1203. family back

  1204. together

  1205. but the name

  1206. of Jesus

  1207. can

  1208. your name

  1209. can't forgive

  1210. sins

  1211. your name

  1212. can't banish

  1213. demons

  1214. your name

  1215. can't heal

  1216. your name

  1217. can't liberate

  1218. your name

  1219. can't wash

  1220. me clean

  1221. but the name

  1222. of Jesus

  1223. can

  1224. to him

  1225. who is able

  1226. to do far

  1227. more abundantly

  1228. and beyond

  1229. everything

  1230. that we could

  1231. ask or think

  1232. to him

  1233. be all the glory

  1234. in the church

  1235. forever and ever

  1236. amen

  1237. that's Ephesians

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  1238. chapter 3

  1239. and verses 20

  1240. and 21

  1241. church

  1242. church is not

  1243. about you

  1244. it's not

  1245. about me

  1246. it's always

  1247. about Jesus

  1248. the leadership

  1249. answers to God

  1250. not you

  1251. not even me

  1252. the leadership

  1253. answers

  1254. to Jesus

  1255. this church

  1256. is accountable

  1257. to congregation

  1258. but we will

  1259. answer to God

  1260. someday

  1261. for what we did

  1262. with our leadership

  1263. of this church

  1264. so what are the

  1265. takeaways

  1266. my spirit

  1267. will either

  1268. help or harm

  1269. God's work

  1270. in his church

  1271. my spirit

  1272. will either

  1273. help or harm

  1274. God's work

  1275. in his church

  1276. would you bow

  1277. your heads

  1278. with me

  1279. please

  1280. quietly

  1281. I'm going to

  1282. ask these

  1283. questions

  1284. as our heads

  1285. are bowed

  1286. this is getting

  1287. down to the

  1288. nitty gritty

  1289. of our everyday

  1290. life here

  1291. would you ask

  1292. yourself

  1293. with your head

  1294. bowed

  1295. would you silently

  1296. in your own head

  1297. ask yourself

  1298. this question

  1299. is my spirit

  1300. helping or harming

  1301. First Baptist

  1302. Church of

  1303. Henrietta

  1304. we got visitors

  1305. here this morning

  1306. and I don't expect

  1307. you to be able

  1308. to answer that

  1309. question right

  1310. this moment

  1311. but for our

  1312. regular attenders

  1313. and members

  1314. I'd like to ask

  1315. you that

  1316. is your spirit

  1317. helping or harming

  1318. First Baptist

  1319. Church

  1320. the church

  1321. is not about

  1322. me

  1323. it's not about

  1324. you

  1325. it's about

  1326. Jesus

  1327. am I glorifying

  1328. God

  1329. is there anything

  1330. I'm doing

  1331. that's bringing

  1332. glory to God

  1333. or am I

  1334. glorifying myself

  1335. am I scratching

  1336. my itches

  1337. am I making

  1338. sure that

  1339. everything is

  1340. exactly as I

  1341. want it

  1342. and the minute

  1343. it starts to

  1344. get out

  1345. of shape

  1346. or something

  1347. that I don't

  1348. like

  1349. I'm going to

  1350. fight tooth and

  1351. nail to get it

  1352. back to how I

  1353. think it ought to

  1354. be

  1355. guys we can't

  1356. have that

  1357. if everybody

  1358. started acting

  1359. in that way

  1360. we would be

  1361. a church of

  1362. nothing but

  1363. strife

  1364. contentiousness

  1365. constant arguments

  1366. and we're not

  1367. that I thank God

  1368. that we are not

  1369. that kind of

  1370. church

  1371. but this is a

  1372. continual reminder

  1373. it is a

  1374. continual struggle

  1375. to say he must

  1376. increase I must

  1377. decrease

  1378. the church is not

  1379. about me

  1380. it's about

  1381. Jesus

  1382. maybe you're

  1383. here this

  1384. morning and

  1385. you don't

  1386. know for

  1387. sure that

  1388. you are God's

  1389. child

  1390. you're in

  1391. church we're

  1392. grateful for

  1393. that

  1394. but you say

  1395. I've never

  1396. taken the

  1397. step to put

  1398. all my faith

  1399. in Jesus

  1400. for the

  1401. forgiveness of

  1402. my sins

  1403. for God to

  1404. save me

  1405. if that's you

  1406. would you slip

  1407. your hand up

  1408. now no one's

  1409. looking around

  1410. but I'd like

  1411. to pray for

  1412. you

  1413. thank you

  1414. you can put

  1415. your hands

  1416. down

  1417. let me ask

  1418. this question

  1419. how many of

  1420. you would

  1421. say

  1422. God is

  1423. working on

  1424. my heart

  1425. and I need

  1426. prayer about

  1427. something

  1428. it might be

  1429. because

  1430. I've been

  1431. contentious

  1432. I've been

  1433. trying to make

  1434. it about me

  1435. and I know

  1436. it's about

  1437. Jesus

  1438. it might be

  1439. something else

  1440. but would you

  1441. slip your hand

  1442. up now

  1443. say I need

  1444. prayer

  1445. thank you guys

  1446. all around the

  1447. room

  1448. would you

  1449. put your

  1450. hands down

  1451. God

  1452. you know

  1453. every man

  1454. and woman

  1455. who raised

  1456. their hand

  1457. here today

  1458. you know

  1459. what's going

  1460. on in their

  1461. hearts

  1462. you know

  1463. you know

  1464. intimately

  1465. what's going

  1466. on in every

  1467. heart

  1468. but Lord

  1469. I pray

  1470. specifically

  1471. for the

  1472. people that

  1473. raised their

  1474. hands

  1475. that

  1476. one they

  1477. would be

  1478. open and

  1479. sensitive to

  1480. the leading

  1481. of your

  1482. spirit

  1483. in their

  1484. heart

  1485. and life

  1486. that you

  1487. would make

  1488. them vessels

  1489. of mercy

  1490. vessels

  1491. of your

  1492. power

  1493. that you

  1494. would remind

  1495. every man

  1496. woman

  1497. child

  1498. in this

  1499. room

  1500. our

  1501. primary

  1502. goal

  1503. is to

  1504. bring glory

  1505. to you

  1506. to bring

  1507. honor to

  1508. you

  1509. to praise

  1510. you with

  1511. our lives

  1512. and that's

  1513. got to

  1514. happen in

  1515. this church

  1516. help us

  1517. to set

  1518. ourselves

  1519. our

  1520. preferences

  1521. everything

  1522. else

  1523. aside

  1524. and remember

  1525. that as long

  1526. as you

  1527. are being

  1528. lifted up

  1529. that's what's

  1530. most important

  1531. it's in

  1532. Jesus name

  1533. we pray

  1534. amen

  1535. on

  1536. love

  1537. that as long

  1538. so

  1539. ifodus

  1540. and

  1541. you

  1542. then

  1543. or
