  1. We are, we are the church. All right, welcome to First Baptist Henrietta. My name is Sam Bedell. I'm the pastor here.

  2. Has it been a good service so far? Amen, I agree. Let's go to, in your Bibles, to Matthew chapter 22.

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  3. Matthew 22. I want to read this by way of introduction to kind of set up what we're going to talk about today.

  4. Matthew chapter 22 and verse 34. Jesus is meeting with the Pharisees. The Pharisees had heard that Jesus, by his wisdom and his knowledge of the law and his divine wisdom and understanding, had silenced the Sadducees, another group of religious leaders.

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  5. And so this kind of foremost group of religious leaders, the Pharisees, came together and they wanted to question Jesus and tried to nail him on something, try to catch him off guard and make him slip up.

  6. And one of them, an expert in the law, asked a question of Jesus to test him.

  7. Verse 36. Teacher, which command of the law is the greatest?

  8. Which command in all of the law? Talking about the Mosaic law that God gave to the children of Israel way back in the Old Testament.

  9. And then many more laws were given over the period of the next many hundred years.

  10. And so what do we see here? They're trying to trip him up.

  11. They say, which one of these is the greatest?

  12. Jesus says in verse 37, love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.

  13. This is the greatest and most important command.

  14. Verse 39. The second is like it.

  15. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  16. All the law and the prophets depend on these two commands.

  17. All of the law.

  18. All of the prophecies.

  19. Everything that was given depend, hinge on those two commands.

  20. Let me tell you, if man-made religion had followed that,

  21. if they had wrapped their minds around what Jesus just said,

  22. then religion on this earth would look very different than it has over the history of the church.

  23. Oftentimes, what has been done in the name of Jesus has been nothing like what Jesus commanded.

  24. Oftentimes, what has happened, what has been taught,

  25. and what has been enacted in churches around the world

  26. had nothing to do with loving the Lord or loving our neighbor as ourselves.

  27. So, Jesus came to change it.

  28. Jesus came to introduce, to reshape, to reform our thinking.

  29. He came to ask us to pivot from something else.

  30. So, let's get into it.

  31. This morning, we're talking about ecclesiology.

  32. We're talking about the doctrine of the church.

  33. Our little introduction video reminded us that we are the church,

  34. reminded us that the church is not a place.

  35. It is a people, right?

  36. So, this is a practical preaching series on we are the church.

  37. Let's all say it together.

  38. Ready?

  39. We don't just go to church.

  40. We are the church.

  41. Y'all are going to get it on the first try next week, okay?

  42. Let's do it again together.

  43. Here we go.

  44. We don't just go to church.

  45. We are the church.

  46. That's right.

  47. And so, that kind of is a pivot away from the thinking that says the church is the place,

  48. the church is a building,

  49. it's somewhere we go.

  50. Well, actually, it's a group of people.

  51. One of the questions that the kids have submitted recently said something along the lines of,

  52. I'm trying to remember the exact wording and I can't,

  53. but basically, it was kind of like,

  54. where is the church?

  55. And where can we have church?

  56. I think that was the question.

  57. Where can we have church?

  58. And my answer to that is anywhere.

  59. You can have church as the body of Christ anywhere.

  60. If we wanted to go have it at the park, we could, but we'd get a little warm.

  61. We could have church anywhere, but we are grateful that God has provided this beautiful place for us to assemble.

  62. It is certainly very functional for our needs.

  63. It's got classroom space.

  64. It's got a nice fellowship hall.

  65. We can gather together and break bread, which is biblical.

  66. All right.

  67. It's not just Baptist.

  68. It's biblical.

  69. All right.

  70. We can get together and eat together.

  71. It's in the Bible.

  72. Jesus did it.

  73. It's okay.

  74. It's all right for us to do it.

  75. So, the church building provides all sorts of advantages and is a blessing for the church.

  76. But the church building is not the church, is it?

  77. We are the church.

  78. This thing skipped ahead.

  79. There we go.

  80. Just as a reminder, again, ekklesia, that is the Greek word that we find in the Bible for the church,

  81. and it literally means an assembly, a congregation.

  82. And so, again, it is the gathering of people.

  83. It is not the building.

  84. So, ecclesiology is what we're talking about throughout this series, the doctrine of the church.

  85. Two weeks ago, we talked about the church.

  86. It's not about me.

  87. It's about God.

  88. Okay?

  89. The church is not there to please me.

  90. It's not all hinging on what I think, et cetera.

  91. It's about God.

  92. And so, everything we do in the church should be, first and foremost, bringing honor and glory to God.

  93. If it's not, then we've got to put it on the magnifying glass and say,

  94. Huh.

  95. God isn't really getting glorified from this, so should we be doing it?

  96. Or should we be changing it?

  97. Should we be tweaking it to make sure that God gets the glory in whatever we're doing in this church?

  98. All right?

  99. Secondly, last week, we talked about how the church should find unity in its diversity.

  100. Guess what?

  101. We're not all the same.

  102. I know that's shocking as you look around here that we've got kind of a colorful group of folks here this morning.

  103. Colorful is a nice way to put it, isn't it?

  104. Everybody's a little different.

  105. Everybody does things a little differently.

  106. We're all a little unique.

  107. Come from unique backgrounds.

  108. We've got different ideas about things.

  109. And that's okay as long as that diversity brings us together in the body of Christ.

  110. That in and of itself should bring glory to God and saying,

  111. Wow.

  112. How could God bring this diverse group of people together?

  113. What binds them together to keep coming and hanging out each week?

  114. Coming together on Sunday night, on Wednesday night.

  115. Getting together in the community and doing things together.

  116. Why are we all hanging out so much?

  117. Because it's God that binds us together.

  118. It's not necessarily common backgrounds.

  119. It's not necessarily we're all in agreement and everything all the time.

  120. We're certainly not.

  121. But that's okay.

  122. We can agree that God is good.

  123. That God loves us.

  124. That Jesus died for us.

  125. That he rose again.

  126. That he wants to save us.

  127. He wants to change our lives.

  128. He wants to mold us into his image.

  129. And we're going to walk this road together as the body of Christ.

  130. So there is unity in that diversity which brings glory to God.

  131. Which is the purpose of the church.

  132. So today we're talking about the church customer or minister.

  133. Customer or minister.

  134. We're going to fly through some of this.

  135. So y'all hang with me if you will.

  136. The church.

  137. Customer or minister.

  138. Turn it over in your Bibles to 2 Corinthians 5.18.

  139. Listen, I'm going to give you a lot of different scriptures today.

  140. You don't have to turn to each one physically in your Bible.

  141. We have a good amount of material to cover today that I'd love to give to you.

  142. And so if you just want to jot references down in your bulletin or wherever you'd like to do it, that's fine.

  143. But we are going to bounce through several different parts of scripture.

  144. Because we're teaching some biblical principles about the church.

  145. And if we had about three hours, we could take the time to give the full context of each passage.

  146. And teach that whole truth.

  147. But in our limited time this morning, I just want to kind of spark your thinking about the church.

  148. Mark some things down.

  149. And then in your own personal quiet time or family devotional time, if you'd like to go back and study more about this, we certainly can.

  150. So 2 Corinthians 5.18, let's look at it.

  151. Everything is from God who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and has given us the ministry.

  152. See that word?

  153. The ministry of reconciliation.

  154. When he says us, he's talking about the children of God.

  155. He's talking about the people of God.

  156. The church of God.

  157. Our First Baptist Church here in Henrietta, Texas is an expression, a local expression of the greater church, the body of Christ.

  158. So we can self-identify with this.

  159. As Paul was writing this in his second letter to the church at Corinth, the church in Henrietta can also take this and adapt it to us.

  160. We can identify with what Paul's talking about.

  161. So he says, God, Christ has given us the ministry of reconciliation.

  162. Well, that right there qualifies you for ministry.

  163. You are a minister.

  164. Okay?

  165. That doesn't mean you're a pastor.

  166. That doesn't mean you get up and preach on Sunday mornings in a church.

  167. But if you are a child of God, then you are a minister of God.

  168. And you have a ministry that God has given you.

  169. The grander spectrum of ministry that God has assigned to you is this ministry of reconciliation.

  170. What does that mean?

  171. Reconciliation means restoring a relationship, right?

  172. Being reconciled.

  173. Well, the first need of reconciliation for you and for me is reconciling God away from our sin and back into unity and fellowship with God.

  174. So he does that at the moment of salvation.

  175. He offers reconciliation.

  176. He says he wants to reconcile us from darkness into light, from sin into salvation.

  177. So that is the first reconciliation that we have.

  178. Well, so how are you and I ministers of that reconciliation?

  179. We get to go share that message with others.

  180. We get to go take that gospel message and share it with people who have not yet been reconciled.

  181. We thank God that somebody shared it with us.

  182. But let that not die with us.

  183. Let that be a ministry that continues on through us, our ministry.

  184. And then the second reconciliation is reconciling each other to ourselves.

  185. Making sure that there is no strife between one another.

  186. Oftentimes in a church, as we're all striving toward the same goal,

  187. sometimes we'll have different ideas on how to reach that goal.

  188. Sometimes we'll be in disagreement with one another.

  189. Being in disagreement is okay, isn't it?

  190. Being in discord is not okay.

  191. Disagreeing is fine.

  192. But living in contention with each other, living in anger and strife with each other,

  193. bitterness, that is not okay.

  194. And so reconciliation must happen between each other.

  195. So much of the thoughts that I'm giving you today come from this church.

  196. It's one of the most effective books written about the church.

  197. That has been, it's principles put into practice in thousands of churches across our nation

  198. and around the world.

  199. And so I want to let you know this is a good read for those who are interested in diving

  200. more deeply into some of these subjects.

  201. And we drew much of what we're talking about today from the principles of that book.

  202. So number one, every Christian is created for ministry.

  203. Every Christian is created for ministry.

  204. How do we know that?

  205. Ephesians chapter 2 and verse 10.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  206. We, you and I, are his workmanship.

  207. We are his creation.

  208. Created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.

  209. From the very beginning, God knew that he had a plan and a purpose for you and for me.

  210. And if you are still breathing, then his plan and purpose for you is not done.

  211. Okay?

  212. Say, man, my time's over.

  213. It's time for the young people to step up and take it.

  214. Well, you're half right.

  215. It is time for the young people to step up and take it.

  216. But your time is not over.

  217. God is still wanting to work through you.

  218. God still has a plan and purpose.

  219. It might look differently for you now than it did 30 years ago.

  220. But God still has a purpose for you.

  221. He still has good works that he created you for.

  222. A ministry that he created you for.

  223. So he created us, all of us, for ministry.

  224. We find that in the Bible.

  225. Number two, every Christian is saved for ministry.

  226. We are saved for ministry.

  227. Guess what?

  228. God didn't just save you to keep you out of hell.

  229. We believe in this church because it teaches in the Bible that if you sin, if you break

  230. God's law, which guess what?

  231. We all have.

  232. Every one of us are in the same boat in that regard.

  233. We've all done wrong.

  234. We've all failed.

  235. Not one of us are perfect.

  236. If you say you are, you're lying and everybody knows it.

  237. Okay?

  238. You're not fooling anybody into thinking that you're perfect.

  239. All of us have made mistakes.

  240. And all of those sins, all of that wrongdoing has qualified us for punishment for our sin,

  241. which is death in a terrible place called hell that God created for Satan and his demons.

  242. But if we choose Satan's way, which is sin, which all of us do, even if we don't want to,

  243. we find ourselves doing it.

  244. The Apostle Paul wrote about that in the New Testament.

  245. He said, the things that I want to do, I end up not doing.

  246. And the things that I don't want to do, that's what I find myself doing.

  247. I can identify with that.

  248. Right?

  249. Because we are surrounded by this weak flesh that ends up sinning.

  250. So we are qualified for hell.

  251. That is the punishment that God has prescribed for our sin.

  252. That's why Jesus came.

  253. Jesus came as the one sinless one.

  254. The only one who didn't have to go to hell.

  255. The only one who didn't sin.

  256. He came down here.

  257. He wasn't just God looking down at us and saying, why can't you be like me?

  258. He came down here, was born.

  259. As a little baby.

  260. Grew up as a child.

  261. Became a man.

  262. Walked around on this earth.

  263. Was tempted in all the same ways you and I are tempted.

  264. And yet he never sinned.

  265. Because of course, he was 100% man, but he was also 100% God.

  266. So he could be perfect.

  267. He could be sinless.

  268. So even though he didn't deserve any punishment.

  269. He didn't do anything wrong.

  270. He allowed himself to be crucified.

  271. Put to death.

  272. Laid in the grave.

  273. And then he came out of the grave.

  274. To prove he is God.

  275. He can conquer anything.

  276. He can conquer death.

  277. He can conquer sin.

  278. He can conquer the grave.

  279. And now he offers salvation to us.

  280. And he says, since I took the punishment,

  281. I died so you don't have to die that spiritual death.

  282. So you don't have to suffer the punishment for your sins.

  283. He says, now I offer you forgiveness.

  284. I offer you salvation.

  285. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord.

  286. And you believe in your heart that God did raise him up from the dead.

  287. Then you can be saved.

  288. God can forgive you.

  289. Cleanse you from all your unrighteousness.

  290. Okay?

  291. So he does that.

  292. He offers that.

  293. And if someone is in this room today,

  294. I ask it every Sunday.

  295. And I'm convinced that there are still people in the room

  296. that haven't yet put that faith in Jesus to say,

  297. God, I believe.

  298. Okay?

  299. I believe.

  300. Sign me up.

  301. I believe that you are God.

  302. I believe you died on the cross.

  303. You rose from the grave.

  304. And I want you to forgive my sins.

  305. Make me your child.

  306. Part of your family.

  307. If you have not done that,

  308. don't leave here today without doing it.

  309. In just a couple of minutes, we'll pray.

  310. We'll have a time that you can come down.

  311. I'll talk to you.

  312. We can sit down.

  313. We can pray.

  314. We can pray together.

  315. And we can work through that.

  316. But please, please don't leave this place today

  317. without making that most important decision.

  318. Everything else we're talking about hinges

  319. on that relationship with Jesus.

  320. Okay?

  321. And so when God saves us,

  322. He saves us for a purpose.

  323. It's not just to keep us out of hell.

  324. It's not just to say,

  325. okay, you're good now.

  326. You don't have to pay the punishment

  327. for your sins anymore.

  328. Go have fun.

  329. He's got a plan for you.

  330. He's got a purpose for you.

  331. How cruel would it be

  332. for God to take you away from one master

  333. and not give you another?

  334. Now, sin is a terrible master.

  335. It is a terrible boss.

  336. Okay?

  337. When you do what you want to do,

  338. what sin wants you to do,

  339. what your weak, sinful flesh wants you to do,

  340. that gets you in all kinds of trouble.

  341. That gets you in all kinds of places

  342. that you don't want to be.

  343. So when God frees you from that

  344. and says, you don't have to serve that master anymore,

  345. and then if He just left you and said,

  346. okay, figure it out,

  347. how cruel would that be?

  348. But instead, He gives us the Holy Spirit.

  349. He gives us His presence inside us

  350. to go with us everywhere,

  351. to admonish us,

  352. to help guide us,

  353. to help lead us,

  354. to help us make decisions then

  355. according to His will,

  356. which is always right.

  357. So that is what He saves us to do,

  358. and those purposes that He has for us

  359. is your ministry.

  360. This comes from 2 Timothy 1 and verse 9.

  361. He has saved us,

  362. and He has called us with a holy calling,

  363. not according to our works.

  364. We're leaving that alone, right?

  365. That gets us in trouble.

  366. But according to His own purpose and grace,

  367. which was given to us in Christ Jesus

  368. before time began.

  369. You notice a theme there?

  370. All this was planned out.

  371. We saw it in Ephesians.

  372. We saw it in 2 Timothy here.

  373. All this was planned out

  374. before we were ever even created.

  375. God knew what He was going to do with us.

  376. He knew the job you'd be working.

  377. He knew the kids you'd have.

  378. He knew what you'd name them.

  379. He knew the struggle that you would have

  380. between husband and wife.

  381. He knew the friendships.

  382. He knew everything that would come into your life,

  383. and He tailored it all for His divine purpose.

  384. Are you fulfilling that purpose?

  385. Are you fulfilling your ministry?

  386. Number three,

  387. every Christian is called into ministry.

  388. Every Christian has a divine calling.

  389. We just saw it a moment ago in 2 Timothy.

  390. Did you see that?

  391. Here we go.

  392. There we are.

  393. He has saved us and called us

  394. with a holy calling.

  395. So that's why we say

  396. every Christian is called into ministry.

  397. Over in 1 Peter 2 and verse 9,

  398. you are a chosen race,

  399. a royal priesthood,

  400. a holy nation,

  401. a people for God's own possession,

  402. so that you may proclaim

  403. the praises of Him,

  404. the One who called you

  405. out of darkness

  406. into His marvelous light.

  407. That is our ministry.

  408. Proclaim the praises of God.

  409. Okay?

  410. Proclaim the praises of God.

  411. In your relationships,

  412. are you praising God?

  413. Are you proclaiming His praises?

  414. In your workplace,

  415. are you proclaiming His praises?

  416. Do His praises enter your mouth?

  417. Are they on your lips?

  418. Let His praise be forever on my lips.

  419. None of us are praising God

  420. as we should,

  421. but we are called to do just that.

  422. Number four,

  423. every Christian is gifted for ministry.

  424. We got into this extensively last week

  425. when we talked about spiritual gifts,

  426. and Sunday night,

  427. we dove into it even more

  428. and passed out individual spiritual gifts.

  429. I don't know,

  430. tests, exams,

  431. whatever you want to call them.

  432. Surveys,

  433. just to kind of go through

  434. and answer questions

  435. that might help reveal to you

  436. what God has gifted you,

  437. prepared you,

  438. equipped you for.

  439. And so every Christian

  440. is gifted for ministry.

  441. How do we know that?

  442. 1 Peter chapter 4 and verse 10.

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  443. Each one,

  444. each one has received a gift,

  445. so we should use it

  446. to serve others

  447. as good stewards

  448. of the buried grace of God.

  449. The buried grace of God

  450. is what God has given each one of us.

  451. It's various.

  452. It's changing.

  453. It's different.

  454. It's unique.

  455. Each one of us

  456. does not have the same gifts,

  457. but each one of our gifts

  458. are valuable.

  459. And each one of us

  460. has received a gift from God.

  461. We are gifted for ministry.

  462. That's not just to make you look good.

  463. That's not to just impress people.

  464. That gift that God has given you,

  465. whatever it is,

  466. that isn't just to help people like you

  467. and raise you in the estimation of others.

  468. It's to serve.

  469. It's to serve others.

  470. So if you don't find yourself

  471. increasing in service each year,

  472. then go back and say,

  473. God, help me use my gift

  474. more effectively for you.

  475. I don't want my gift to go to waste.

  476. Every year, we should walk

  477. a little more closely with God.

  478. Every year, He should work

  479. a little more through us.

  480. It's not a zero to a hundred overnight.

  481. It's a slow, progressive walk

  482. and journey with the Lord.

  483. But we must be improving.

  484. Otherwise, we start slipping back.

  485. We start slipping back.

  486. We start becoming more selfish,

  487. more self-focused.

  488. It starts becoming more about us.

  489. The cares of this life,

  490. the fear that is so tempting

  491. to give into,

  492. starts to distract us

  493. from the purpose,

  494. that great and glorious purpose

  495. that God has given to us.

  496. So if you don't feel like

  497. you're accomplishing your purpose,

  498. if you don't feel like maybe

  499. that's what best describes

  500. your life at this moment,

  501. let's go back to the drawing board.

  502. Let's sit down.

  503. Let's sit down and talk.

  504. But let's let the Scripture

  505. be the magnifying glass

  506. that shows us exactly

  507. where we went wrong,

  508. how we can go back

  509. and start using our gifts for service.

  510. And then number five,

  511. every Christian is authorized

  512. for ministry.

  513. This doesn't mean that every Christian

  514. is authorized for every ministry.

  515. Okay?

  516. There are some ministries

  517. that I should not do.

  518. If y'all put me in the kitchen to cook,

  519. it's not going to work.

  520. Okay?

  521. I will come out with some

  522. microwave cheese quesadillas

  523. or something, okay,

  524. for everybody.

  525. Open up a can of salsa,

  526. we're good.

  527. But if you put me in the nursery,

  528. you know,

  529. that would maybe not be

  530. the best fit for me.

  531. Not everybody is authorized

  532. for every ministry,

  533. but everyone is authorized

  534. for ministry.

  535. Okay?

  536. Don't let anybody tell you

  537. you can't be a minister.

  538. Don't let anybody tell you

  539. you can't serve

  540. with the gifts

  541. that God has given you

  542. in the local church.

  543. Okay?

  544. Every Christian is authorized

  545. for ministry.

  546. We know that from Matthew 28.

  547. We call it the Great Commission.

  548. That's where we received

  549. our commission from God.

  550. Jesus said,

  551. all authority

  552. has been given to me.

  553. Say, well, that's great.

  554. We know that Jesus is authorized.

  555. Okay?

  556. We know that God authorized Jesus.

  557. What does that have to do with us?

  558. Well, in verse 19,

  559. he says,

  560. you go.

  561. Go.

  562. Go, the royal you out there,

  563. the church, us.

  564. He says, go.

  565. Because I have all authority,

  566. you go.

  567. What does that make sense?

  568. How does that work?

  569. You're the one

  570. that has the authority.

  571. Why don't you do it?

  572. Because Jesus says,

  573. you go,

  574. make disciples,

  575. baptize them

  576. in the name of the Father,

  577. the Son,

  578. the Holy Spirit.

  579. Teach them

  580. to do all the things

  581. I've commanded you

  582. because he is with us.

  583. I think I forgot

  584. to put verse 20 in there.

  585. He says,

  586. I am with you.

  587. The one who has

  588. all the authority,

  589. the one who's been authorized,

  590. I go with you.

  591. You have access

  592. to all that power,

  593. all that authority.

  594. You are authorized to go.

  595. So that's how we know.

  596. Anybody says,

  597. you shouldn't do that.

  598. God says,

  599. I sent you.

  600. I sent you

  601. to fulfill

  602. your ministry.

  603. You know,

  604. the reality is,

  605. sometimes we fail

  606. on this earth.

  607. Sometimes we fall

  608. on this earth.

  609. Sometimes the consequences

  610. of what we do

  611. disqualify us

  612. from doing certain things

  613. in the church for God.

  614. You know why that happens?

  615. You know why

  616. it disqualifies us?

  617. Because it hurts

  618. our testimony.

  619. We're going out

  620. and presenting ourselves

  621. as ambassadors

  622. for Jesus Christ.

  623. And so certain things

  624. can compromise that.

  625. So your ministry

  626. might be limited

  627. in certain areas.

  628. But God never

  629. takes back

  630. his callings

  631. on your life.

  632. God never removed

  633. his ministry

  634. that he has

  635. for you.

  636. You can still minister.

  637. You can still serve.

  638. You can still fulfill

  639. your purpose

  640. even though

  641. you might have messed up.

  642. Guess what?

  643. Everybody in here

  644. is messed up.

  645. There's not a man,

  646. woman, or child

  647. in this room

  648. that hasn't messed up.

  649. So whatever God

  650. is still allowing you

  651. to do,

  652. don't let that

  653. responsibility,

  654. don't let that

  655. ministry slide.

  656. Fulfill your ministry.

  657. ministry.

  658. Because number six,

  659. every Christian

  660. is needed

  661. for ministry.

  662. We are all

  663. needed.

  664. Every single one

  665. of you,

  666. from Billy Carlton

  667. who stands out there

  668. and hands out

  669. bulletins

  670. when people come in,

  671. to every one

  672. of our children's

  673. volunteers.

  674. God bless

  675. those people.

  676. Those people

  677. who will go in there

  678. and from the babies

  679. all the way up

  680. to teenagers

  681. and beyond,

  682. that is such

  683. a vital ministry

  684. in this church.

  685. To the people

  686. who pick up trash,

  687. to the people

  688. who cook

  689. on Wednesday nights,

  690. to the people

  691. who do

  692. all the different

  693. things

  694. that make

  695. this church tick,

  696. that make us

  697. keep going,

  698. the kindness ministry

  699. goes out

  700. and sometimes

  701. not everybody

  702. jumps in and helps,

  703. but they're out there

  704. spreading the love

  705. of Jesus

  706. in the community.

  707. I can tell you

  708. that every single role

  709. is needed.

  710. It's vital.

  711. And there are roles

  712. that are currently

  713. unfulfilled

  714. that are needed.

  715. There are slots

  716. that we have

  717. nobody in

  718. that are absolutely

  719. needed.

  720. 1 Corinthians 12, 27,

  721. you are the body.

  722. It is you.

  723. If you come,

  724. if you're a part

  725. of this church,

  726. then you're the body.

  727. You're individual

  728. members of the body.

  729. Guess what?

  730. We need all the parts

  731. of our body, right?

  732. If you lose

  733. one of the parts

  734. of your body,

  735. you notice it.

  736. Even the tiniest

  737. little part,

  738. you still notice it.

  739. One time,

  740. I just about

  741. lost a toenail.

  742. Stubbed my toe

  743. so bad,

  744. it just,

  745. yeah,

  746. it's not fun

  747. to think about.

  748. Just about

  749. ripped that thing off.

  750. That is a very,

  751. very small part

  752. of my body,

  753. but I was very aware

  754. of it in that moment.

  755. I absolutely

  756. noticed that

  757. that part of the body

  758. was just about gone

  759. and it was not enjoyable.

  760. Every single part

  761. of our body

  762. is essential

  763. and every single

  764. part of our church,

  765. every single member

  766. of our church

  767. is needed.

  768. Number seven,

  769. every Christian

  770. is accountable

  771. for ministry.

  772. We are accountable

  773. for it.

  774. God has given you

  775. a ministry

  776. and he wants to know

  777. that you're going

  778. to do it.

  779. Okay?

  780. First Corinthians,

  781. I'm sorry,

  782. second Corinthians

  783. chapter five,

  784. for we must all

  785. appear before

  786. the judgment seat

  787. of Christ.

  788. It's not just

  789. the pastor,

  790. it's not just

  791. the staff,

  792. it's not just

  793. the committee members,

  794. it's not just

  795. the deacons

  796. or trustees

  797. or anybody else,

  798. it's not just

  799. the ministry team

  800. leaders.

  801. Every one of us

  802. is going to appear

  803. before the judgment

  804. seat of Christ.

  805. This is not

  806. the great white throne

  807. judgment.

  808. That's where the lost

  809. must be held

  810. accountable for their sins.

  811. Those who rejected

  812. Jesus,

  813. those who never

  814. got saved

  815. is what we like

  816. to call it,

  817. but putting our faith

  818. in Jesus Christ,

  819. they have to stand

  820. before the great

  821. white throne

  822. seat of judgment

  823. before Christ

  824. and be judged

  825. according to their sins.

  826. You and I

  827. will not be judged

  828. according to our sins

  829. if we put our faith

  830. in Christ.

  831. We then go to the

  832. judgment seat of Christ.

  833. We are judged

  834. for the good

  835. that we did for Christ

  836. so that each one

  837. may receive

  838. what is due

  839. for what he has done

  840. in the body

  841. whether good or evil.

  842. The things we did

  843. for ourselves,

  844. that will be burned up.

  845. We're not going to be

  846. judged for it

  847. and sent to hell.

  848. That's all done.

  849. Jesus paid that.

  850. But it's not going

  851. to produce anything good.

  852. The things that we did

  853. for God,

  854. the work that we did

  855. for him,

  856. that will produce

  857. gold, silver,

  858. precious stones,

  859. things of great value

  860. and God will reward us

  861. for that.

  862. He will give us crowns.

  863. He will reward us greatly

  864. and we'll then turn around

  865. and cast those crowns

  866. at Jesus' feet

  867. because we know

  868. it was all through

  869. his power.

  870. We're accountable

  871. for what we do

  872. with the ministry

  873. that God has given to us.

  874. And then number eight,

  875. every Christian

  876. will be rewarded

  877. for ministry.

  878. We just talked about it

  879. a moment ago

  880. but in Colossians 3,

  881. Paul writes about it.

  882. He says,

  883. whatever you do,

  884. do it from the heart

  885. as something done

  886. for the Lord

  887. and not for people

  888. knowing that you will

  889. receive the reward

  890. of an inheritance

  891. from the Lord.

  892. You serve

  893. the Lord Christ.

  894. Guess what folks?

  895. God is going to reward you

  896. for ministry.

  897. It doesn't matter

  898. if you get all the pats

  899. on the back

  900. that you think you should

  901. on this earth,

  902. in this church.

  903. We're not doing it

  904. for each other.

  905. We're doing it,

  906. number one,

  907. for the Lord.

  908. Okay?

  909. Now we should love each other.

  910. We should try to help each other.

  911. We should try to serve each other

  912. but our motivation

  913. is we are serving

  914. Jesus Christ

  915. and He is the one

  916. who will reward us.

  917. We will receive

  918. the reward

  919. of our ministry

  920. from God.

  921. Anybody know

  922. what this stuff is?

  923. Take a wild guess.

  924. It's purposefully small.

  925. Okay?

  926. Because I'm not doing

  927. advertisements here.

  928. Okay?

  929. The one on the left

  930. is Southwest Airlines.

  931. The one on the right

  932. is Sam's Club.

  933. Okay?

  934. These are the two memberships

  935. that I have

  936. that I've reached

  937. a certain status in.

  938. Okay?

  939. Let me tell you,

  940. back in my previous job

  941. when I was working

  942. for Southwestern Seminary,

  943. I was doing a lot of traveling

  944. and I will never forget

  945. the day

  946. that I became

  947. A-list

  948. on Southwest Airlines.

  949. Okay?

  950. It was just a special moment.

  951. Now unfortunately,

  952. I was not A-list preferred

  953. because of course

  954. there's always another tier up

  955. from where you are,

  956. you know?

  957. But still,

  958. I wasn't just one

  959. of those ragtag passengers

  960. who had to like

  961. board later,

  962. you know?

  963. I got to go on

  964. in like the third

  965. boarding group

  966. or something.

  967. It was really important.

  968. How many of you guys

  969. have flown

  970. Southwest Airlines?

  971. Slip your hands up

  972. real quick.

  973. I love it in the Metroplex

  974. especially

  975. because I get to go

  976. to Love Field

  977. and avoid the nightmare

  978. that is DFW.

  979. But yeah,

  980. so you know

  981. on Southwest Airlines

  982. you have to check in

  983. on the app

  984. or whatever

  985. when.

  986. Anybody know?

  987. 24 hours in advance,

  988. right?

  989. If you want to get

  990. any kind of decent seat,

  991. you got to check in then.

  992. Now they have

  993. A group,

  994. they have B group,

  995. they have C group.

  996. I quit paying attention

  997. after that.

  998. I don't know

  999. how far it goes.

1000. How many of you guys

  1001. have made A group

  1002. every time?

  1003. Just like every time.

  1004. Wow.

  1005. Okay,

  1006. Laura Lee,

  1007. just flex on everybody

  1008. right now.

  1009. That's called

  1010. blessed and highly favored

  1011. right there.

  1012. Yeah,

  1013. it's,

  1014. you know,

  1015. it's annoying

  1016. because you sit there

  1017. and my flight leaves

  1018. at 327.

  1019. So at 327

  1020. the day before,

  1021. I'm going to click

  1022. the button

  1023. and check in.

  1024. Man,

  1025. I still got B group.

  1026. How did that work,

  1027. right?

  1028. Because all us

  1029. A list people,

1030. we don't have to check in.

  1031. It does it automatically

  1032. for us.

  1033. So we're guaranteed

  1034. to get A list.

  1035. I'm doing all this

1036. like I still have it

  1037. and my A list

  1038. definitely expired

  1039. so it's gone now.

1040. But let me tell you

  1041. it was so fun.

  1042. It was so fun.

  1043. The other one here,

  1044. I've reached a certain level

  1045. of financial prosperity

  1046. because I went from

  1047. Sam's Club club membership

  1048. to plus membership.

  1049. Yes,

1050. that's the kind of coin

  1051. I got,

  1052. okay?

  1053. Sam's Club plus.

  1054. It's amazing,

  1055. I think.

  1056. I'm not 100% sure.

  1057. I'm looking at the X's.

  1058. Yeah,

1059. the big thing we got it for

  1060. is the free shipping

  1061. that they do.

  1062. That's cool.

  1063. Yeah,

  1064. there's optical savings.

  1065. I don't even wear glasses.

  1066. So anyway,

  1067. I don't know.

  1068. But you know what?

1069. It felt good to me

1070. to be a plus member

  1071. and guess what?

1072. You get a black card

1073. instead of a blue card.

  1074. So that's always great.

  1075. Where am I going

  1076. with all this, right?

1077. Most of you are wondering

  1078. where are you going

  1079. with all this?

1080. We were on a roll

  1081. and now we're talking

  1082. about Southwest Airlines

  1083. and Sam's Club.

  1084. The idea here is

  1085. these are clubs, right?

  1086. These are members.

  1087. These are memberships.

  1088. It's really special

1089. to be a part of this.

  1090. The problem is

  1091. no matter what level

  1092. I get to,

  1093. there's always

  1094. something better.

  1095. And those memberships

  1096. expire.

  1097. I was a Hilton Hotel

  1098. Diamond member

  1099. or whatever

  1100. for a while.

  1101. It was great.

  1102. Sort of.

1103. It wasn't really worth it.

  1104. Then it expired.

  1105. The week after

  1106. my Diamond membership

  1107. expired,

  1108. they started putting in

  1109. this new policy

  1110. at Hilton Hotels

  1111. where they have

  1112. reserved parking

  1113. for Diamond members

1114. right up next to the door.

  1115. the week after

  1116. my Diamond membership

  1117. expired.

1118. I roll up to the hotel.

  1119. Again, I was doing

  1120. a lot of traveling.

1121. Roll up to my next hotel

  1122. and right up there

  1123. I see Reserve

  1124. for Diamond members.

  1125. Platinum,

  1126. whatever they call it.

  1127. And I'm like,

  1128. are you kidding me?

  1129. I've been one

  1130. for a calendar year

  1131. and yeah.

  1132. Anyway,

1133. it was a rough moment.

1134. Y'all feel bad for me,

  1135. don't you?

  1136. First world problem.

  1137. Look,

  1138. those things

  1139. are more silly

  1140. than they are

  1141. anything else really.

  1142. Often,

  1143. usually,

  1144. especially with the

  1145. airlines and hotels,

  1146. what that means is

  1147. you're probably

  1148. traveling too much,

1149. you're away from your family

  1150. more than you would

  1151. want to be

  1152. and that's certainly true.

  1153. And now I'm not

  1154. a Diamond member

  1155. with Hilton

  1156. and I'm not even

  1157. A-list with Southwest

  1158. Airlines anymore.

  1159. I'm just a regular

  1160. old person.

  1161. But listen,

  1162. the idea is

  1163. you and I

  1164. are members

  1165. of an exclusive

  1166. club.

  1167. But this is the

  1168. most inclusive,

  1169. exclusive club

  1170. you'll ever find.

  1171. It's the body

  1172. of Christ.

  1173. we are members

  1174. of it.

  1175. When man

  1176. puts a club

  1177. together,

  1178. he puts all

  1179. these strict

  1180. policies attached

  1181. to it.

  1182. He puts all

  1183. these hoops

  1184. that you gotta

  1185. jump through,

  1186. you gotta qualify,

  1187. you gotta spend

  1188. a certain amount

  1189. of money,

  1190. you gotta do

  1191. all this stuff

  1192. to be part of

  1193. their club

  1194. because the reality

  1195. is they're not

  1196. doing that club

  1197. or giving you

  1198. those perks

  1199. just because they

  1200. think you're cool.

  1201. they're not

  1202. doing it just

  1203. to be your buddy

  1204. and be nice

  1205. to you.

  1206. The reality is

  1207. they want more

  1208. customers,

  1209. they want you

  1210. to keep doing

  1211. your business

  1212. only with them

  1213. and they want

  1214. you to tell

  1215. other people

  1216. to come do

  1217. business with

  1218. them.

  1219. They want to

  1220. make money

  1221. off of it,

  1222. right?

  1223. I mean,

  1224. that's the point

  1225. of the workplace

  1226. is usually

  1227. to make money.

  1228. So they attract

  1229. us in by,

  1230. hey,

  1231. spend a certain

  1232. amount,

  1233. you can become

  1234. this important

  1235. person,

  1236. VIP.

  1237. VIP.

  1238. Jesus says,

  1239. come be part

  1240. of my club.

  1241. It's exclusive.

  1242. It is exclusive.

  1243. It excludes

  1244. all those

  1245. who will not

  1246. put their faith

  1247. in Jesus.

  1248. So it might

  1249. be excluding

  1250. some of you

  1251. here this morning.

  1252. But you get

  1253. a constant

  1254. 24-hour,

  1255. never expires

  1256. invitation

  1257. to join the

  1258. club.

  1259. But there is

  1260. an expiration date

  1261. on that.

  1262. And that's

  1263. when your

  1264. death occurs.

  1265. There is

  1266. an expiration

  1267. date on the

  1268. offer to join

  1269. the club.

  1270. That's when

  1271. your time on

  1272. earth is over

  1273. and none of

  1274. us know

  1275. when that

  1276. will be.

  1277. So Jesus

  1278. wants you

  1279. in his

  1280. club.

  1281. And then

  1282. once you're

  1283. in,

  1284. you get to

  1285. go try to

  1286. bring in as

  1287. many other

  1288. members as

  1289. possible.

  1290. and it's

  1291. free.

  1292. There's no

  1293. cost to

  1294. join.

  1295. There's no

  1296. obligations.

  1297. But once you

  1298. become a

  1299. member,

  1300. you got some

  1301. assignments.

  1302. That's the

  1303. difference in

  1304. human membership

  1305. and church,

  1306. godly,

  1307. divine,

  1308. spiritual

  1309. membership of

  1310. the body.

  1311. when we

  1312. think of

  1313. the word

  1314. member,

  1315. we think

  1316. of perks.

  1317. We think,

  1318. what am I

  1319. getting from

  1320. this?

  1321. The church,

  1322. membership

  1323. versus

  1324. partnership.

  1325. membership.

  1326. I want to

  1327. introduce a

  1328. concept to

  1329. you.

  1330. What do you

  1331. think of

  1332. when you

  1333. think of

  1334. membership?

  1335. Leave church

  1336. out of it for

  1337. a minute.

  1338. When I think

  1339. of membership,

  1340. I think of

  1341. benefits.

  1342. I think,

  1343. how does it

  1344. benefit me?

  1345. What are the

  1346. perks?

  1347. When I think

  1348. of partnership,

  1349. I think of

  1350. responsibilities.

  1351. responsibilities.

  1352. So the

  1353. Bible says we

  1354. are individual

  1355. members of

  1356. the body of

  1357. Christ.

  1358. But we,

  1359. as members of

  1360. the church,

  1361. are supposed

  1362. to partner.

  1363. We are supposed

  1364. to partner with

  1365. one another

  1366. because we have

  1367. responsibilities.

  1368. We have a

  1369. ministry with

  1370. the church.

  1371. Members have

  1372. privileges.

  1373. Partners have

  1374. responsibilities.

  1375. Whether you

  1376. have officially

  1377. joined this

  1378. church as a

  1379. member or

  1380. not, I'm

  1381. talking to

  1382. everybody in

  1383. the room right

  1384. now.

  1385. That's not

  1386. what I'm

  1387. talking about.

  1388. I encourage

  1389. you to take

  1390. that step if

  1391. you haven't.

  1392. I encourage

  1393. you right now

  1394. today at the

  1395. close of the

  1396. service, if you

  1397. have not yet

  1398. put your

  1399. membership in

  1400. this church,

  1401. go ahead and

  1402. take that step.

  1403. I urge you to

  1404. do that.

  1405. And if God is

  1406. urging you to

  1407. do the same

  1408. thing, then

  1409. please step out

  1410. as soon as the

  1411. music starts.

  1412. Come talk to

  1413. me and we'll

  1414. get that taken

  1415. care of today.

  1416. But every

  1417. person who

  1418. attends this

  1419. church has a

  1420. responsibility.

  1421. responsibility in

  1422. this church, a

  1423. ministry that God

  1424. has given you.

  1425. So here's the

  1426. question, what's

  1427. the next step for

  1428. you?

  1429. What's the next

  1430. step for you?

  1431. Would you bow your

  1432. heads with me?

  1433. What's the next

  1434. step in your

  1435. ministry?

  1436. What's the next

  1437. step in this

  1438. church for you?

  1439. are you a customer

1440. of the church or a

  1441. minister?

  1442. When we're

  1443. customers, whether

  1444. it's Southwest

  1445. Airlines or Sam's

  1446. Club or whatever

  1447. it is, those people

  1448. will do everything,

  1449. they will bend over

  1450. backwards to keep

  1451. our business to get

  1452. us to spend more

  1453. money with them.

  1454. And oftentimes, the

  1455. perks that sound so

  1456. great kind of leave

  1457. you feeling empty

  1458. afterwards.

  1459. Was it really worth

  1460. it?

  1461. We don't have

  1462. customers in the

  1463. church.

  1464. We are called to

  1465. minister.

  1466. Maybe you've been

1467. in this church for a

  1468. long time and you've

  1469. been acting more like

  1470. a customer.

  1471. Where are my

  1472. membership privileges?

  1473. Where are my

  1474. benefits?

  1475. As opposed to saying

  1476. I am a God-called

  1477. minister in this

  1478. church.

  1479. Doesn't mean I'm up

  1480. on the platform

  1481. preaching, doesn't

  1482. mean I'm even

  1483. necessarily teaching

  1484. in a class.

  1485. It doesn't mean I'm

  1486. in charge of

  1487. something, but I

  1488. understand that Jesus

  1489. saved me and called

  1490. me and equipped me

  1491. and authorized me to

  1492. be a minister of

  1493. the gospel, a minister

  1494. of reconciliation.

  1495. So what's my next

  1496. step?

  1497. Every man, woman,

  1498. every teen, every

  1499. child must ask

  1500. themselves this

  1501. question this morning.

  1502. What is my next

  1503. step?

  1504. Every one of you

  1505. have one.

  1506. Has one.

  1507. It does not matter

  1508. how long you've been

  1509. a Christian.

  1510. It doesn't matter

  1511. how long you've been

  1512. in this church or

  1513. another one.

  1514. It doesn't matter

  1515. how short you've been

  1516. a Christian.

  1517. Every one of us,

  1518. myself included,

  1519. has something that

1520. God wants us to do

  1521. next for him.

  1522. And it's going to

  1523. benefit all of us.

  1524. It's going to benefit

  1525. the whole church.

  1526. We need each other.

1527. Lord, I ask that you

  1528. would work in each

  1529. heart right now.

  1530. Whether somebody needs

1531. to step out of the

1532. aisle in just a moment,

  1533. I know we're a little

  1534. past our time today,

  1535. but whether somebody

1536. needs to step out of

1537. the aisle in just a

  1538. moment and come down

  1539. and put their official

  1540. membership in this

  1541. church and join

  1542. together, partner

  1543. together with us for

  1544. this common ministry,

1545. I ask that you would

  1546. give them the boldness

1547. to go ahead and do

  1548. that today.

  1549. Let them understand

  1550. that, humanly speaking,

  1551. that's a big move to

  1552. identify and say,

  1553. you know what,

  1554. this is my church.

1555. I'm going to be part

  1556. of this church.

  1557. It's not required in

  1558. scripture that we come

  1559. transfer a letter or

  1560. something like that,

  1561. but that is an

  1562. outstanding way to

  1563. signify this church is

1564. my family, this is a

1565. part of my life, and I

1566. want to be a part of the

  1567. life of this church.

  1568. God, whether you've got

  1569. something else that

  1570. somebody needs to do,

  1571. start serving in a

  1572. ministry here.

  1573. Start telling others

  1574. about you.

  1575. Start inviting people to

  1576. come.

1577. See what God's doing in

  1578. this church.

  1579. Start giving more.

  1580. Start giving it all.

1581. There are all kinds of

  1582. ways to partner, to

1583. minister, and I ask that

1584. you would give us the

1585. boldness to say yes to

  1586. whatever that next step

  1587. is.

1588. Put our yes on the table

1589. and then you tell us what

  1590. it's going to be.

1591. That's what we pray right

  1592. now in Jesus' name.

  1593. Amen.

  1594. Brother Greg's going to

  1595. come sing.

  1596. We'll have just a moment,

1597. so don't wait too long.

  1598. Just a moment.

  1599. I'll be right down

  1600. front.

1601. You come talk to me if

1602. you'd like to talk about

  1603. putting your faith in

  1604. Jesus, putting your

  1605. membership in this church

  1606. or something else

  1607. entirely.

  1608. Y'all stand together.

  1609. Come down here.

  1610. if you like, you're given a

  1611. accord.

  1612. You're so bloom.

  1613. You're damn good.

1614. I'm gonna be right there.

  1615. Have just a moment.
