  1. Have you all been enjoying this series on the church for the last few Sundays?

  2. Well, I have too, and I hope that we continue to learn from it, be challenged from it, each one of us.

  3. The idea is we are the church. It's a study in ecclesiology, which is a big word that just means the Bible doctrine

  4. that has to do specifically with the church.

  5. We have been adopting some statements that we can all unite around and agree upon from the Word of God.

  6. And the first statement is we don't just go to church. We are the church. Let's say it together. Ready?

  7. We don't just go to church. We are the church. Amen.

  8. And then the next statement that we have adopted is, ready, let's say it together.

  9. The church is not about me. Who's the church about? God. That's right. The church is about God.

  10. Seems like a simple, obvious truth. Everybody would say, yeah, sure, church is about God.

  11. But sometimes the way we act, the way we talk, the way we live communicates more that we feel like the church is about us rather than about God.

  12. So we need to remind ourselves of that continually.

  13. And then last Sunday we talked about this. Don't let what is secondary become primary.

  14. Let's say that together. Ready? Don't let what is secondary become primary.

  15. What do we mean by that?

  16. Don't let our personal opinions about things, our personal agendas get in the way of the main thing, keeping the main thing the main thing.

  17. And that is the church is about Jesus. It's not about me.

  18. The mission of the church is to go out and share the gospel with all who will hear it.

  19. And that is the main thing to bring honor and glory to Jesus Christ through obedience to him and accomplishing the mission that he gave the church.

  20. So don't let other things, other secondary things, take the place of the main things, the primary things.

  21. And so today we're going to look at this one.

  22. This was not original with me. A friend of mine gave it to me, but I love it.

  23. I want to share it with you all.

  24. Well, as the church, we gather, we grow, we give, and we go.

  25. Think about that.

  26. Those are some of the things that we have covered already in our series on the church.

  27. The first couple of weeks we talked about gathering.

  28. We talked about how important it is to gather together, to be here as a body of believers, unified together, worshiping together.

  29. How we can encourage one another, grow together from our obedience to God's command together as the church.

  30. And then we did talk about growing.

  31. And we talked about how it is important for every member of the body to take on their role within the church.

  32. We're not all the same.

  33. We're all different, but there is unity in that diversity.

  34. And it brings glory to God when people who are so different from one another all take up their roles within the church

  35. and serve together, grow together, and take the next step in their journey with Christ together.

  36. A couple weeks ago we talked about giving, how important it is for it to take ownership, financial ownership of our church body

  37. and give to support the work that we do.

  38. There's nothing that the church does without the support, direct financial support of its members.

  39. And so that is an essential command and ingredient in a healthy church.

  40. So let's say these together.

  41. Today we're going to do the last one.

  42. We're going to talk about going.

  43. All right?

  44. We're going to talk about going.

  45. We've got a couple of weeks left in our church series.

  46. We're going to kind of do a summary and wrap up at the end.

  47. But today we're talking about the mission of the church, the going.

  48. So let's read this together.

  49. Ready?

  50. We gather, we grow, we give, and we go.

  51. That's right.

  52. We gather, we grow, we give, and we go.

  53. Alliteration.

  54. They all start with the same letter.

  55. You know, preachers love alliteration.

  56. So it's kind of a memory tool.

  57. Sometimes it sticks in our minds a little better when we do that.

  58. But that's all right if it doesn't.

  59. So Matt, I just lost this for some reason.

  60. There we go.

  61. I don't know if you advanced that or if I did, but regardless, here we go.

  62. All right.

  63. Our topic today, as we talked about going, is the church on mission together.

  64. That is our title.

  65. That's our topic that we're going to dive into today from the scriptures.

  66. The church on mission together.

  67. You and I have a common mission from God.

  68. It's not just my mission.

  69. It's not just your mission.

  70. It's our mission together that God gave to his people.

  71. So we are on mission together.

  72. That evokes images of nighttime commando raids in my mind.

  73. And, you know, because I was a little boy and thought that stuff was cool growing up.

  74. And so that's something that paints a picture in my mind of being on a mission together.

  75. On a special mission that we have been commanded by the Heavenly Father himself to fulfill.

  76. So I pray that we are challenged today to accomplish the mission that God has given us.

  77. The common mission.

  78. Would you stand with me?

  79. Let's go to John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  80. John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  81. We're going to spend a little time in John 17.

  82. Then we're going to turn back a page and be in John 15 for a little bit later.

  83. So John chapter 17, beginning in verse 6.

    John 17 chapter mention

  84. Let's read together.

  85. I have revealed your name to the people you gave me from the world.

  86. Jesus is speaking to his father.

  87. He's praying to his heavenly father saying,

  88. I have revealed your name, God, to the people you gave me from the world.

  89. They were yours.

  90. You gave them to me.

  91. And they have kept your word.

  92. Now they know that everything you have given is from you.

  93. Because I have given them the words you gave me.

  94. They have received them and have known for certain that I came from you.

  95. They have believed that you sent me.

  96. Verse 9.

  97. I pray for them.

  98. I pray for them.

  99. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me.

  100. Because they are yours.

  101. How amazing is it to know that Jesus prays for us?

  102. This isn't the only time in scripture that we read that Jesus prays for us.

  103. Another time he says, Satan would desire to have you, to lead you astray, but I have prayed for you.

  104. That's an incredibly encouraging note to pop back into our mind.

  105. Every morning, every day, during those dark moments,

  106. Jesus, the Son of God, the Lamb of God, the Messiah, is praying for me.

  107. Y'all ever said you pray for somebody?

  108. I have.

  109. Sometimes we do it.

  110. Sometimes we might forget.

  111. Sometimes it's a good idea to stop and do it right then so we don't forget to do it later.

  112. But Jesus will never forget.

  113. He'll always be praying for us.

  114. And when God makes intercession for us on our behalf with the Father,

  115. that can move mountains.

  116. So, I pray for them.

  117. And then in verse 10,

  118. Everything I have is yours.

  119. Everything you have is mine.

  120. And I am glorified in them.

  121. I am no longer in the world,

  122. but they are in the world.

  123. And I am coming to you.

  124. This was right before Jesus was crucified.

  125. And then resurrected and went home to be with his Father.

  126. And so he said, I am no longer in the world.

  127. I'm coming to you.

  128. He knew he was on physically on his way out.

  129. But the Holy Spirit would be left behind.

  130. And so he said,

  131. Holy Father, protect them by your name that you have given me.

  132. Protect them that you have given me by your name.

  133. So that they may be one as we are one.

  134. I highlighted that.

  135. Did you see?

  136. They may be one as the Father and the Son are one.

  137. That is his prayer for us.

  138. Verse 12.

  139. While I was with them,

  140. I was protecting them by your name that you have given me.

  141. I guarded them.

  142. And not one of them is lost,

  143. except the Son of Destruction,

  144. so that the Scripture may be fulfilled.

  145. Now I am coming to you.

  146. And I speak these things in the world,

  147. so that they may have my joy completed in them.

  148. I have given them your word.

  149. The world hated them.

  150. Because they are not of the world.

  151. Just as I am not of the world.

  152. You ever wonder why Christians just don't seem to fit in?

  153. It's because we don't.

  154. The world hates us because we are not of the world.

  155. And Jesus wasn't of this world.

  156. Now that's a different reason than when the world hates us

  157. because we are living in a way that would invoke that kind of hate.

  158. When we are unkind, when we are selfish.

  159. That's not what this is talking about.

  160. But darkness and light cannot come together.

  161. Light erases darkness.

  162. Darkness is what happens when the light is gone.

  163. They cannot agree together.

  164. So the world and God and the things of God

  165. will never be compatible.

  166. But Jesus, despite that,

  167. impacted this world in a positive way

  168. like no one else ever could.

  169. So that doesn't mean that because we are not of this world,

  170. that we don't leave a positive impact on this world.

  171. That doesn't mean that just because

  172. we cannot dive in and agree with everything

  173. that this world promotes,

  174. that doesn't mean that we can't make a profound difference

  175. in this world.

  176. Jesus was magnetic.

  177. He drew people to Him.

  178. And He wants us to do the same thing.

  179. Even though we are strangers in this world.

  180. So let's dive back into the text.

  181. Verse 18.

  182. Last two verses that we're reading today.

  183. Verse 18.

  184. He said in verse 16,

  185. They are not of the world,

  186. just as I am not of the world.

  187. So sanctify them by the truth.

  188. And your word is truth.

  189. Then in verse 18,

  190. As you sent me into the world.

  191. Here we go.

  192. I also have sent them.

  193. Let's change that pronoun

  194. because He's praying to His Father on behalf of us.

  195. And so let's change it to us.

  196. He has sent,

  197. He said,

  198. I also have sent them.

  199. So He has sent us into the world.

  200. He has sent us into the world.

  201. Verse 19.

  202. I sanctify myself for them

  203. so that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

  204. God, I pray for our church right now.

  205. I pray for myself, my family,

  206. and everyone represented in this building this morning.

  207. Those watching online,

  208. we're grateful that they are able to,

  209. through technology,

  210. have a part continually in our service.

  211. We know there's people who can't be here

  212. and would love to.

  213. But God, our church,

  214. those away on trips,

  215. those at home sick,

  216. think of Nicole and others

  217. who are not able to be here right now

  218. because of extenuating circumstances.

  219. I pray on behalf of everyone that you have given us

  220. that we would be on mission together.

  221. That's not going to look the same for every person,

  222. but you have sent each of us into this world

  223. and you have not yet called us home.

  224. So I pray that we would be on mission together.

  225. That we would hear from your word this morning

  226. and let it minister to our hearts in Jesus' name.

  227. Amen.

  228. You may be seated.

  229. Thank you for standing for that extended period of time.

  230. We don't always do that,

  231. but sometimes we like to give honor

  232. to the scriptures by doing that.

  233. John 17.

  234. Jesus gives us our commandment.

  235. This is not the only place.

  236. There are many other places,

  237. Matthew 28, Mark 16,

  238. many other places throughout the scriptures

  239. that God gives us the command to go out.

  240. God has commissioned his church

  241. as messengers,

  242. as ambassadors to go out.

  243. So here's the problem.

  244. There's really no option for a believer

  245. to not be willing to accept his mission from God.

  246. There is no option for that.

  247. If a believer is not making an attempt,

  248. a personal attempt,

  249. to fulfill the mission from God,

  250. then that believer is wrong in his relationship

  251. and thinking about God.

  252. That's not coming from me.

  253. That's coming from the word of God.

  254. Time and time again,

  255. God commands us to obey his commandments

  256. in going out and bringing them in.

  257. What does that mean?

  258. Is that bringing them into church?

  259. Well, that's a great place to bring them

  260. because you know that they will hear the gospel there.

  261. You know that they will meet other believers in Jesus there.

  262. And you know there's an increased opportunity

  263. for them to continually be presented with chances

  264. to receive Christ.

  265. So that's a great place to bring them in.

  266. But that's not the only thing.

  267. That's not the only goal that we have

  268. is inviting people to church.

  269. So Jesus said he wants us to go out

  270. and send them in.

  271. Now, before he did this,

  272. let me back up a little bit.

  273. He said,

  274. I have sent them into the world.

  275. That's our mission.

  276. But before he got there,

  277. he said,

  278. may they all be as one.

  279. May they all be one as you,

  280. Father,

  281. are in me

  282. and I am in you.

  283. As we are unified,

  284. as you and I, God,

  285. are together

  286. of one mind,

  287. of one accord,

  288. may they be the church.

  289. May the church be that way as well.

  290. So, point number one,

  291. if you're writing anything down,

  292. point number one,

  293. we are to be a unified body.

  294. A unified body.

  295. That's what we are.

  296. The church is not a building, right?

  297. The church is a body.

  298. We thank God for our building,

  299. but if the building was destroyed,

  300. we could still meet and have church.

  301. We'd figure out a way to do it

  302. because we are a body of believers,

  303. of Jesus' followers,

  304. and we are to be unified in that body.

  305. A body that's not unified

  306. doesn't operate very well,

  307. does it?

  308. Of course not.

  309. How many of y'all work in the medical field?

  310. Anybody?

  311. Slip your hands up.

  312. Don't be ashamed of it.

  313. Slip your hands up.

  314. There you go.

  315. Y'all have seen firsthand

  316. when the body doesn't work right.

  317. Correct?

  318. If you're a parent,

  319. you've raised kids,

  320. you've seen firsthand.

  321. Everyone has seen firsthand

  322. what happens

  323. when the body is not unified,

  324. when it's not working together

  325. in cohesion,

  326. cohesively

  327. with all its different parts.

  328. So we are to be a unified body.

  329. I like this quote.

  330. I know it's kind of small

  331. and probably a little bit hard to read.

  332. It says,

  333. it is not so much the case

  334. that God has a mission

  335. for His church in the world

  336. as that God has a church

  337. for His mission in the world.

  338. Mission was not made for the church.

  339. The church was made for mission.

  340. God's mission.

  341. That is the polar opposite way of thinking,

  342. I believe firmly.

  343. After 20 years of preaching,

  344. I believe firmly that most churches

  345. do not think this way.

  346. They might claim this line of thinking,

  347. but that's not really probably how they operate.

  348. So if we were able to get to the place

  349. where we operated this way,

  350. we'd probably be setting ourselves apart

  351. from a lot of the churches in America.

  352. And I believe tearing down

  353. some of the walls

  354. that limit God

  355. from working through our church

  356. how He wants to.

  357. So the idea here

  358. is that God did not ordain the church

  359. as that is the main thing

  360. and then come up with a job

  361. for the church to do.

  362. God had a mission

  363. before time ever began.

  364. It's a diametric shift

  365. in our way of thinking

  366. that would then trickle down

  367. to the other parts of our lives.

  368. So if you are going to be a Jesus follower,

  369. then you can't just be a casual Christian.

  370. If you're going to claim Jesus Christ,

  371. then you can't just say,

  372. oh yeah, I go to church on Sundays

  373. because that's what you're supposed to do.

  374. Jesus talks about those kinds of churches

  375. in Revelation

  376. and He says,

  377. we talked about it a little bit earlier,

  378. He said,

  379. I'd rather you be hot

  380. or I'd rather you be cold.

  381. This middle of the road stuff,

  382. this lukewarm stuff,

  383. He just wants to spit it out.

  384. That's not what it's about.

  385. He said,

  386. either be for me

  387. or be against me.

  388. That doesn't mean

  389. He's requiring perfection

  390. as a Christian

  391. or as a church,

  392. but He is requiring a commitment

  393. to Him

  394. that says,

  395. I will strive

  396. to be more like Jesus every day.

  397. I will strive to fulfill the mission

  398. that God gave me

  399. as part of this church.

  400. And if I fail,

  401. I know God forgives me

  402. and I will get up

  403. and try again.

  404. It's so important

  405. to get up

  406. and try again

  407. because we're all going to fail.

  408. We're all going to miss opportunities

  409. to share the gospel with somebody.

  410. We're all going to chicken out sometimes.

  411. We're all going to get distracted by life.

  412. We're all going to let the secondary things

  413. become primary things.

  414. We're all going to not do the things

  415. that we should do sometimes.

  416. Paul the Apostle wrote about it

  417. throughout his letters

  418. that we read in the New Testament

  419. time and time again

  420. how he wishes that he was better

  421. at doing the things

  422. God wants him to do.

  423. But when we continually say,

  424. I committed to this,

  425. I'm not going to give up on God.

  426. I'm not going to give up

  427. on seeking him daily.

  428. I'm not going to give up

  429. and just say,

  430. forget it.

  431. This is just who I am

  432. and everybody's going to have

  433. to be okay with that.

  434. Now we probably all know

  435. somebody like that

  436. or multiple people like that.

  437. Well, this is just who I am

  438. and I'm not going to change.

  439. Well, that's unfortunate

  440. because what if God wants

  441. to change you?

  442. Then you're saying,

  443. sorry God.

  444. Well, that's a sad

  445. and depressing thing to see

  446. from a child of God

  447. that Jesus shed his blood for.

  448. Let his only son die

  449. and suffer for.

  450. So this kind of shift

  451. in our thinking,

  452. God doesn't have a mission

  453. for the church.

  454. God has a church

  455. for his eternal mission.

  456. His eternal mission

  457. is to bring glory to himself.

  458. His eternal mission

  459. as it regards to mankind

  460. is to redeem

  461. or to buy back

  462. those who went astray.

  463. And that's us.

  464. That's the people

  465. on this earth.

  466. Jesus said he came

  467. to seek

  468. and to save

  469. those who are lost.

  470. So,

  471. that's the mission

  472. and the church

  473. was created

  474. to fulfill

  475. the mission.

  476. Our common mission

  477. unites us.

  478. Each one of these sermons

  479. in this series

  480. has, by God's grace,

  481. been building blocks

  482. on top of one another

  483. to get to this point.

  484. we must gather together.

  485. We shouldn't forsake that.

  486. It's easy to stay at home

  487. and sleep in on Sunday morning.

  488. We shouldn't

  489. fight

  490. and bicker

  491. back and forth

  492. and talk badly

  493. about each other

  494. and spread rumors

  495. and all this kind of stuff

  496. that tears us up

  497. from the inside.

  498. We shouldn't let

  499. the secondary things

  500. become the most

  501. important things

  502. or let them distract us

  503. or pull us away

  504. from the most

  505. important things.

  506. Remove the focus

  507. from what's truly important.

  508. But all of this

  509. is leading up

  510. to the mission

  511. of the church.

  512. If we are just

  513. gathering

  514. and singing

  515. and hearing

  516. the preaching

  517. and then it doesn't

  518. go and change

  519. how we live

  520. and more than that,

  521. more than just

  522. changing us,

  523. it's not just all

  524. about us,

  525. remember that?

  526. More than just

  527. changing us,

  528. it's not affecting

  529. others that we encounter

  530. throughout the week.

  531. If that is not

  532. happening,

  533. then we're not

  534. accomplishing the mission.

  535. Then we're just

  536. nice people

  537. and we've got

  538. a nice little

  539. social club here.

  540. And we all

  541. more or less

  542. like each other

  543. and get along

  544. and fellowship

  545. together

  546. and all that

  547. and it's a nice

  548. enjoyable thing,

  549. but we're not

  550. really accomplishing

  551. the mission

  552. that God gave us.

  553. So that is

  554. what should unite

  555. us as a church,

  556. our common

  557. mission.

  558. Jesus said,

  559. I have sent

  560. them

  561. into the world.

  562. Otherwise,

  563. y'all,

  564. as good as you

  565. think this is,

  566. heaven's going

  567. to be so much

  568. better.

  569. Let's just get

  570. on home to heaven

  571. and it'll be

  572. great.

  573. It'll be

  574. wonderful.

  575. But if God

  576. is not ready

  577. to call us

  578. home to heaven,

  579. it's because

  580. he's got a

  581. divine purpose,

  582. a divine mission

  583. for each of us

  584. individually

  585. that works

  586. together and

  587. unites us

  588. together as

  589. the church.

  590. Let's look over

  591. now in John 15.

  592. Turn the page

  593. back to John 15.

  594. We'll spend

  595. just a few

  596. minutes here

  597. and then we'll

  598. be done this

  599. morning.

  600. John 15

    John 15:1

  601. verse 1.

  602. We're going

  603. to read the

  604. first eight

  605. verses.

  606. For sake of time,

  607. I'm going to go

  608. ahead and read.

  609. I am the

  610. true vine.

  611. That's Jesus.

  612. That's not me,

  613. okay?

  614. Jesus is talking.

  615. He says,

  616. I am the

  617. true vine.

  618. What does he

  619. mean by that?

  620. Jesus always

  621. spoke allegorically.

  622. Now, I can't

  623. say always,

  624. but so much

  625. of the time.

  626. You know,

  627. you read the

  628. parables,

  629. he would get

  630. up there and

  631. people are like,

  632. what does he

  633. mean by that?

  634. I am the

  635. true vine and

  636. my father is

  637. the gardener.

  638. So he's painting

  639. a picture here.

  640. We got the

  641. horticulturalists

  642. in the room.

  643. Did I get that

  644. one right?

  645. So he's probably

  646. appealing, you

  647. know, to this

  648. demographic here.

  649. And he says,

  650. every branch in

  651. me that does

  652. not produce

  653. fruit, God

  654. the father

  655. removes and

  656. he prunes every

  657. branch that

  658. produces fruit

  659. so that it

  660. will produce

  661. what?

  662. More fruit.

  663. That's why we

  664. prune things

  665. back, right?

  666. See, God knew

  667. that before

  668. science ever

  669. figured it out.

  670. God created

  671. all of that

  672. so he knew

  673. exactly how it

  674. should work.

  675. In verse 3,

  676. you are already

  677. clean because of

  678. the word that

  679. I have spoken

  680. to you.

  681. Remain in

  682. me and

  683. I in you.

  684. Just as a

  685. branch is unable

  686. to produce fruit

  687. by itself unless

  688. it remains on

  689. the vine,

  690. neither can

  691. you unless

  692. you remain

  693. in me.

  694. I am the

  695. vine, you

  696. are the

  697. branches.

  698. The one who

  699. remains in

  700. me and I

  701. in him

  702. produces much

  703. fruit because

  704. you can do

  705. nothing without

  706. me.

  707. What are you

  708. talking about?

  709. I can do all

  710. kinds of things

  711. without God.

  712. I can go to

  713. bed, I can get

  714. up, I can go

  715. eat, I can work,

  716. I can argue

  717. and fight and

  718. I can do all

  719. kinds of things

  720. on my own, God.

  721. Yeah, you can't

  722. produce anything

  723. spiritual apart

  724. from God.

  725. You can't produce

  726. true spiritual

  727. fruit that remains

  728. apart from God.

  729. You can draw

  730. attention to

  731. yourself, you can

  732. accomplish what

  733. seem to be good

  734. and helpful tasks.

  735. There's all kinds

  736. of world relief

  737. organizations that

  738. have nothing to do

  739. with God and they

  740. accomplish a lot of

  741. what we would call

  742. good in the world.

  743. But the reality

  744. is none of that

  745. will bear true

  746. spiritual fruit unless

  747. it comes from God

  748. because He is

  749. divine.

  750. He's divine.

  751. It's got to come

  752. from Him or else

  753. it's something else.

  754. It's something else

  755. completely.

  756. It's not true

  757. spiritual fruit.

  758. So I'm challenging

  759. you, do you see

  760. true spiritual fruit

  761. in your life?

  762. I am the vine,

  763. you're the branches.

  764. Verse 6, if anyone

  765. does not remain in

  766. me, here's the scary

  767. part, he is thrown

  768. aside like a branch

  769. and he withers.

  770. They gather them,

  771. throw them into the

  772. fire and they are

  773. burned.

  774. But if you remain

  775. in me and my words

  776. remain in you, ask

  777. whatever you want and

  778. it will be done for

  779. you.

  780. My Father is glorified

  781. by this.

  782. Y'all, when we read

  783. things like this in

  784. Scripture, we ought to

  785. pay attention.

  786. When we see a

  787. statement that says,

  788. my Father is glorified

  789. by this, colon,

  790. everybody knows what a

  791. colon does, it

  792. introduces what's

  793. about to come after

  794. it.

  795. Pay attention.

  796. Here it is.

  797. My Father is glorified

  798. by this, that you

  799. produce much fruit

  800. fruit and prove to

  801. be my disciples.

  802. If we took a poll in

  803. this room and said,

  804. are you a disciple of

  805. Jesus?

  806. I guarantee you we

  807. would get over 90%,

  808. if not higher, of the

  809. people in this room

  810. saying, yes, I am a

  811. disciple of Jesus.

  812. And then I would say,

  813. prove it.

  814. Prove it.

  815. That's what Jesus

  816. said.

  817. You can prove to be

  818. my disciples if you

  819. produce fruit.

  820. So if you're not

  821. producing fruit, why

  822. in the world should we

  823. believe that you're a

  824. disciple of Jesus?

  825. If I'm not producing

  826. fruit in my life, and I

  827. get up here and open the

  828. word of God and preach

  829. to you on Sunday

  830. morning, why in the

  831. world should you listen

  832. to anything I have to

  833. say?

  834. Because I'm not

  835. producing spiritual

  836. fruit in my life.

  837. So you have every

  838. reason to doubt whether

  839. or not that's a true

  840. disciple of Jesus.

  841. Well, that's not very

  842. nice.

  843. Folks, we don't get to

  844. make the rules.

  845. God does.

  846. This is his world.

  847. This is his plan of

  848. redemption.

  849. This is his story.

  850. We're just part of it.

  851. So that's the challenge.

  852. We are, we, God called

  853. us to be, part of our

  854. mission is to be a

  855. unified body.

  856. But then secondly, we

  857. should be a useful

  858. branch.

  859. What do you do with

  860. branches that aren't

  861. useful?

  862. What do you do with

  863. branches that don't

  864. produce fruit?

  865. You cut them off.

  866. You gather them up and

  867. you burn them.

  868. That's what it said in

  869. the text.

  870. I don't want to see that

  871. happen to any of us in

  872. this church.

  873. church.

  874. But I can promise you

  875. this.

  876. It will.

  877. It will happen.

  878. Unfortunately, despite all

  879. of our best efforts and

  880. best intentions, there will

  881. be people in our church who

  882. God decides to cut off,

  883. gather up, and get rid of.

  884. Does that mean they're going

  885. to go to hell?

  886. Well, if they've never put

  887. their faith in Jesus, then

  888. yes.

  889. But I believe specifically,

  890. this is talking about people

  891. who have put their faith in

  892. Jesus, but they have

  893. allowed their own flesh to

  894. suffocate the Holy Spirit

  895. in their life, and they do

  896. not produce any spiritual

  897. fruit.

  898. They don't go share the

  899. gospel with people.

  900. They don't let God transform

  901. someone else's life because

  902. of their efforts on his

  903. behalf and the Holy Spirit

  904. taking hold of those

  905. efforts and magnifying

  906. them, making them so much

  907. more powerful than they

  908. could ever be on their own.

  909. That doesn't happen with

  910. those people.

  911. They don't produce the

  912. fruit of kindness and

  913. compassion.

  914. I mean, you can look at

  915. the lists of the fruit of

  916. the Spirit and say,

  917. is that me?

  918. Am I that person?

  919. And if not, I need to put

  920. my own faith under the

  921. microscope and say, have I

  922. ever really put my faith in

  923. Jesus?

  924. Or am I just kind of going

  925. along with the flow?

  926. That's why every morning,

  927. every Sunday morning, at the

  928. end of this time, I always

  929. ask, is there someone who

  930. needs to put their faith in

  931. Christ today?

  932. And I will always do that

  933. every Sunday after church.

  934. church.

  935. Because I truly believe there

  936. are still people in this

  937. room who have not yet done

  938. that.

  939. Holding out.

  940. You're not quite aware of

  941. what we're talking about.

  942. Whatever the reason is, I

  943. believe God is still giving

  944. you opportunities.

  945. But there's going to come a

  946. day when you get your last

  947. opportunity.

  948. And if you turn that down,

  949. seal your own fate.

  950. I don't want that to happen.

  951. Turn to Jesus today.

  952. Whether it's for salvation

  953. and forgiveness of sins, or

  954. whether it's turning back to

  955. God and saying, God, please

  956. produce fruit through me.

  957. I am an open, willing vessel,

  958. willing servant.

  959. I can't go out and accomplish

  960. the fruits of the Spirit on my

  961. own.

  962. I can't go out and accomplish,

  963. reproduce myself spiritually by

  964. sharing the gospel with someone

  965. who doesn't know Jesus and

  966. seeing them turn to Christ and

  967. seeing there's my living,

  968. breathing, spiritual fruit

  969. right there.

  970. Say, God, do that through me

  971. because I want to be a useful

  972. branch.

  973. I want this church, more than

  974. anything, to be a useful

  975. branch for God.

  976. He is the vine.

  977. We are the branches.

  978. Let's be branches that bear

  979. fruit.

  980. Check out this advertisement.

  981. Anybody familiar with the story

  982. of Shackleton, the explorer?

  983. I got a book on Shackleton's

  984. way of leading, his leadership

  985. philosophy, many, many years ago

  986. when I was a teenager, I think it

  987. was.

  988. That's the kind of presence my

  989. parents got me when I was a

  990. teenager.

  991. They got me books on leadership,

  992. Shackleton.

  993. Anyway, they didn't get me video

  994. games, so there we go.

  995. Men wanted.

  996. Here's the advertisement that

  997. Shackleton put out when he was

  998. getting ready to take his

  999. expedition to Antarctica.

  1000. Yeah.

  1001. Men wanted for hazardous

  1002. journey, small wages, bitter

1003. cold, long months of complete

  1004. darkness, constant danger, safe

1005. return, doubtful, but honor and

1006. recognition in event of success.

  1007. Ernest Shackleton.

1008. Do you think people were just

1009. knocking on the door, beating

1010. down the door of 4 Burlington

1011. Street to sign up for his

  1012. expedition?

  1013. Probably not.

1014. But when he put it out there, he

1015. probably had a pretty good idea that

1016. whoever signed up was ready for

1017. whatever was going to face them.

1018. Folks, I'm telling you that as we

1019. served Jesus, he did not promise an

  1020. easy road.

1021. He did not promise that we'd always

  1022. win the popularity contest.

1023. He didn't promise that our values

1024. would always line up with the

  1025. cultural values around us.

1026. He didn't promise that family

  1027. relationships would always be

  1028. strong.

1029. He didn't promise that everybody

1030. would like you, that everybody

1031. would always be patting you on the

1032. back, that everybody would give you

1033. notice for the good things that you

  1034. do.

1035. But someday, honor and recognition

  1036. will come.

1037. And you know what we'll do with that

  1038. honor and recognition?

1039. We'll turn right around and give it

  1040. back to God.

  1041. That's what we see.

1042. He will give us the crowns, and then

1043. we will cast those crowns back at his

  1044. feet.

  1045. It's a hazardous journey.

1046. The pain is not always great.

1047. Sometimes it can feel cold.

1048. Those around us tend to drift away.

1049. Sometimes it can feel dark, even though

1050. we know that Jesus is the light.

1051. There is constant spiritual danger.

1052. There's spiritual warfare going on

1053. around us every day, even when we

  1054. don't realize it.

1055. This world will not always be safe, but

1056. Jesus will carry us safely home.

1057. He'll carry us safely home.

  1058. John 15, you didn't choose me, I chose

  1059. you.

1060. I like how the New Living Translation put

  1061. this verse in particular.

1062. You didn't choose me, I chose you.

1063. I appointed you to go and produce

  1064. lasting fruit.

1065. To go and produce lasting fruit.

1066. So a key thought for today, we'll have

1067. our takeaway in just a moment.

1068. A key thought for today.

1069. Our church, our church needs each branch

  1070. to produce lasting fruit.

  1071. Each branch.

1072. I'm looking at every face in this room.

1073. God has brought us together.

1074. He does not make mistakes.

1075. God has brought us together.

  1076. For this moment.

1077. We're not guaranteed tomorrow, but he

1078. has brought us together for this

  1079. moment.

  1080. Each branch.

  1081. Each and every branch.

1082. You've seen the branches and then the

1083. little twigs that come off of them, you

  1084. know?

1085. The church is kind of like the branch

1086. and we're kind of like the twigs that

  1087. sprout off.

  1088. We need every twig.

1089. We need every branch to produce

  1090. lasting fruit.

1091. Because if you don't, and you don't,

1092. and you don't some more, and years

  1093. later you still don't, I don't know

1094. when, but some point in there, the

1095. gardener is going to come and snip off

  1096. your branch.

  1097. And that's it.

1098. And if you weren't a believer and you

1099. never put your faith in Jesus, then

1100. eternal punishment in hell is your

  1101. destiny.

1102. If you were a believer and you did put

1103. your faith in Jesus, but you never

1104. opened yourself up to the Holy Spirit of

1105. God and let him produce fruit in you, then

1106. you will be brought home early.

1107. Your twig will be cut off and you'll be

1108. home in heaven with nothing to show,

1109. no honor to give, certainly no honor to

  1110. receive.

1111. So, our church needs it.

1112. One of our key values of our church, let's

1113. say them together if you remember them.

  1114. Ready?

1115. Let's say loving God, seeking truth,

  1116. serving people.

1117. This one's on the screen.

  1118. Let's try that again.

1119. We all need to familiarize with ourselves

1120. with that more as we begin to do

1121. decorations and different things in our

  1122. church.

1123. We're going to try to get those up on the

1124. walls and out in front so we know what

  1125. our church is about.

1126. We're continually reminded of the values of

  1127. our church.

1128. Loving God, seeking truth, serving people.

  1129. Let's say them together.

  1130. Ready?

1131. Loving God, seeking truth, serving people.

1132. So, our third value here is all about

  1133. mission.

1134. The best way that we serve people, I

1135. didn't create that slide by the way,

1136. Tabitha Pierce created that slide and she

  1137. did a great job.

1138. The best way that we can possibly serve

1139. people is to share Jesus with them, is to

1140. go on mission as the church.

1141. And so, that's our takeaway this morning.

1142. We serve people best by introducing them

  1143. to our master.

1144. You and I are servants.

1145. Everyone in this world is a servant.

  1146. You're all serving something.

1147. Every one of you is serving something.

  1148. Everyone has a master.

1149. The master is either sin

  1150. or it's the Savior.

1151. So, we introduce the lost world who's serving the wrong master

1152. to our master and say, this is a whole lot better master.

1153. You can trust what he has to say.

  1154. You can obey him.

1155. And he will not lead you astray.

1156. He will not lead you to the path to destruction.

1157. So, we serve people best by introducing them to our master.

  1158. That is our mission.

1159. And we are on mission together.

1160. We should be united in our mission,

1161. a united body of believers,

  1162. and a useful branch.

1163. As individual members of that united body,

1164. we should be, each of us,

1165. a branch that produces fruit.

1166. So, that's my challenge daily to myself,

  1167. to my family.

1168. Men, I encourage you to keep that

1169. before your wife and your children.

1170. Mothers, I encourage you to keep that

  1171. before your children.

1172. And wives, keep it before your husband too.

1173. Two, we all must keep each other accountable.

1174. One, are we keeping the main thing?

  1175. The main thing.

1176. And the main thing is the mission.

1177. So, let's keep the mission at the top of the heap.

1178. Let's keep the mission in the forefront of our minds

1179. and say, God, don't let me be a branch

  1180. that doesn't bear fruit.

  1181. Let's pray together.

1182. Lord Jesus, I thank you so much

1183. for your continual challenge from the word of God.

1184. I ask right now, God, if there's someone here

  1185. who doesn't know you,

1186. as their personal, personal Savior,

  1187. Father and friend,

1188. that they would not leave this building this morning

1189. without having a true, genuine encounter with Jesus.

  1190. Amen.

  1191. Amen.

  1192. Amen.

  1193. Amen.

  1194. Amen.

  1195. Amen.

  1196. Amen.

  1197. Amen.

  1198. Amen.

  1199. Amen.

  1200. Amen.

  1201. Amen.

  1202. Amen.

  1203. Amen.

  1204. Amen.

  1205. Amen.
