  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. We are continuing on in our series on ecclesiology, the doctrine of the church.

  3. This morning, we will be observing the Lord's Supper at the end of the service.

  4. And so we are taking this opportunity to talk about the ordinances of the church.

  5. The Lord's Supper is one of the two ordinances in a Baptist church.

  6. And we're going to dive into both of those ordinances today and talk about them.

  7. And by way of recap, we have adopted some statements, some sentiments that we can agree on as a church.

  8. And so let's try to go through these by way of reminder and say them together.

  9. Ready? We don't just go to church. We are the church. That's certainly true.

  10. And then secondly, the church is not about me. The church is about God.

  11. And then thirdly, don't let what is secondary become primary.

  12. Can we flip that in reverse as well? Don't let what is primary become secondary.

  13. Let's say that one too. Ready? Don't let what is primary become secondary.

  14. Both of those are true. And of course, Jesus is primary. We want to keep him at the head.

  15. So finally, let's say this one together. Ready?

  16. We gather, we grow, we give, and we go.

  17. And that is something that we should all be keeping in front of us.

  18. And you can kind of see the actual motto that the church has adopted there on the logo that Tabitha designed.

  19. Loving God, seeking truth, serving people.

  20. And these are the ways that we do that as a church.

  21. We gather, we grow, we give, and we go with the gospel of Jesus.

  22. So, today, we're going to talk about the two church ordinances.

  23. Number one, baptism. And number two, the Lord's Supper.

  24. All kinds of different churches will add in different things.

  25. But in the Bible, in the New Testament, when God established the local church,

  26. we see that these are the two ordinances that he gave to the church to continually observe.

  27. Today, we're going to look at that.

  28. Why did he give them to us?

  29. What purpose are they supposed to fulfill?

  30. And what should they do in terms of helping us be better followers of Jesus?

  31. Oftentimes, I'm asked what version of the Bible I read from or preach from generally.

  32. And usually, it is the Christian Standard Bible.

  33. That is the Bible that the Southern Baptist Convention, their publishing arm,

  34. Brodman and Holman publishers put out.

  35. How many of you guys remember the old Holman Christian Standard Bible?

  36. Anybody have one of those?

  37. That one's been around for a while.

  38. This is kind of an update to the Holman Christian Standard.

  39. They dropped the Holman part and just said it's the Christian Standard Bible.

  40. But there are some significant updates in terms of more accurate language, etc.

  41. And it's my personal favorite in terms of striking a balance between readability and faithfulness to the original text.

  42. But whatever Bible you have in front of you, as long as it's one of the mainstream translations out there,

  43. should be just fine and should be very similar to what I'm reading.

  44. Probably my favorite study Bible is the Christian Standard Study Bible.

  45. Absolutely outstanding notes that have been included in that.

  46. So I just wanted to let you know that's what I'm generally reading from.

  47. Luke chapter 3.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  48. Go to Luke chapter 3 if you would.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  49. Luke chapter 3.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  50. We'll read a couple of verses here and then get into the sermon today.

  51. Luke chapter 3 verse 15.

    Luke 3:15

  52. Would you mind standing with me if you're able to?

  53. I know we've stood up and sat down a couple times.

  54. If you're able to stand easily, join me in standing if you would.

  55. And let's read these two verses together and then you may be seated after that.

  56. Luke chapter 3 and verse 15.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  57. Now the people were waiting expectantly.

  58. And all of them were questioning in their hearts whether John, talking about John the Baptist,

  59. whether he might be the Messiah.

  60. Everybody familiar with what the Messiah was?

  61. The long-awaited deliverer, the coming king that the people of Israel were promised back in the Old Testament

  62. and awaited for thousands of years.

  63. And so they're saying, is John this great apostle who's going around and,

  64. you know, prophet I should say.

  65. Apostles weren't a thing yet.

  66. But the great prophet John who was going around and baptizing people,

  67. talking about the coming Messiah, the kingdom of God.

  68. Is he the Messiah?

  69. So John answered them in verse 16.

  70. I baptize you with water, but one is coming who is more powerful than I.

  71. One who is more powerful than I am is coming.

  72. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals.

  73. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

  74. So there's a distinction there in two kinds of baptisms.

  75. We're going to refer back to that in just a moment.

  76. There's that water baptism and then there is the Holy Spirit baptism.

  77. So this morning, I hope what we can take away from this today is we are the church

  78. and we must turn our eyes upon Jesus.

  79. Everything we do as a church should be pointing us back to Jesus.

  80. If it's not, we shouldn't be doing it.

  81. So even the ordinance of the church, baptism, the Lord's Supper, these things should be pointing

  82. our eyes back to Jesus.

  83. Let's pray together and then you can be seated.

  84. God, I pray that you would bless the reading of your word today.

  85. I pray that you would cut through the darkness of our own hearts.

  86. Let the Holy Spirit in those who are your children in this room this morning speak loudly

  87. to us today.

  88. Show us exactly what we ought to do.

  89. And it's in Jesus' name we pray.

  90. Amen.

  91. You may be seated.

  92. Turning our eyes upon Jesus.

  93. So how does that relate to the ordinances of the church?

  94. Number one, baptism does point us to Jesus.

  95. Baptism points us to Jesus.

  96. We just saw that John the Baptist was going around baptizing and he was using that activity

  97. to point people to the coming Messiah.

  98. The church has the same job description.

  99. We should be, according to Matthew 28, the great commission given to the church, we should

  100. be baptizing people and we should be doing that to point people to Jesus.

  101. So John chapter one in verse 33, I myself did not know him.

  102. John is speaking.

  103. He said, the one who sent me to baptize with water told me the man on whom you see the spirit

  104. come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.

  105. Here's those two baptisms we're talking about.

  106. This is talking about Jesus.

  107. John says, I didn't know who it was going to be.

  108. But the one who sent me, which is God, sent him to baptize with water said, here's the

  109. one who's going to baptize with the Holy Spirit.

  110. It's the one on whom the spirit comes down and remains.

  111. And we see in the scriptures that actually play out in the spirit in the form of a dove

  112. coming and resting on Jesus.

  113. And he is the one who then baptizes with the spirit.

  114. So baptism, water baptism as practiced by a church is not the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

  115. These are two different things.

  116. Sometimes different man-made religions will get these confused and they'll try to equate

  117. those two together and say, you're not baptized with the Holy Spirit unless you're baptized

  118. with water, et cetera.

  119. But those are two different things.

  120. Jesus came to baptize with the Holy Spirit.

  121. That is talking about reconciling man with God.

  122. That's talking about the forgiveness of sins.

  123. We call it salvation, being saved from the punishment of your sin and born again into God's

  124. family.

  125. If that hasn't happened for you this morning, then you don't have to worry about anything

  126. else I'm talking about.

  127. That's the number one thing you need to get rectified before you leave today.

  128. You must find peace with God by repenting of your sins and turning to him for forgiveness

  129. and placing all your faith and hope in Jesus for salvation.

  130. So that is the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

  131. That's what Jesus came to do.

  132. He said, I came to seek and to save those who were lost.

  133. He wanted to baptize them with the Holy Spirit.

  134. That means the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God, the spirit form of God in you at all

  135. times.

  136. And if you have put your faith in Jesus, then you have that baptism of the Holy Spirit.

  137. But then John was baptizing with water.

  138. What's this water baptism about?

  139. Well, the church has been tasked with water baptism.

  140. The church baptizes with water after salvation.

  141. After that baptism of the Holy Spirit, at the moment of salvation, placing their faith

  142. in Christ, then the church baptizes with water.

  143. See, God baptizes with the Holy Spirit at salvation.

  144. So these are two distinct baptisms.

  145. Watchman Nee, great theologian and was persecuted for his faith, wrote many, many books that have

  146. been a benefit to preachers throughout the decades.

  147. He said this, baptizing is an outward expression of an inward faith.

  148. There's no reason to get baptized publicly in a church in the water if you have not yet

  149. put your faith in Jesus.

  150. You could probably actually do damage to someone by baptizing them if they haven't put their

  151. faith in Jesus.

  152. Because then the significance of that moment and everybody clapping and applauding and telling

  153. them good job, that could possibly sneak into their minds and convince them that they are

  154. a child of God when they have never put their faith in Christ and repented of their sin and

  155. turned from it.

  156. So baptism should only be an outward expression of something that has already happened.

  157. You're putting your faith in Jesus.

  158. God opening your eyes, bringing you from darkness into light.

  159. Then you can stand up and publicly testify, express that faith outwardly through baptism.

  160. Colossians chapter 2, you don't have to turn there unless you'd like to, but I like how the New

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  161. Living Translation phrases this.

  162. It says, you were buried with Christ when you were baptized.

  163. And with him, you were raised to new life.

  164. Thank God Jesus came back to life.

  165. When we baptize them, we don't have to hold them under the water.

  166. It would probably hurt attendance if we did that long enough.

  167. With him, you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God.

  168. That's talking about that Holy Spirit baptism.

  169. That's talking about putting your trust in the saving power of Jesus who raised Christ from the dead.

  170. Put that faith in God and then you are raised to new life.

  171. So baptism is a picture of that.

  172. That's why we stand them in the water, we bury them, and we lift them out.

  173. Acts.

  174. Did I miss one?

  175. I did.

  176. Hold up a minute.

  177. Okay, here we go.

  178. I'm just going to read this one.

  179. I think the slide isn't on there and I should have put it on there.

  180. Acts chapter 8 and verse 12.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  181. When they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ,

  182. they were baptized, both men and women.

  183. Here it is.

  184. Acts chapter 8 and verse 12.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  185. When they believed Philip, Philip the evangelist, was out preaching the good news of the kingdom of God,

  186. the name of Jesus, they were baptized, both men and women.

  187. That happened after they believed.

  188. So they put their faith in Jesus first and then they were baptized.

  189. So baptism is an important step to publicly identifying yourself as a follower of Jesus.

  190. Is it necessary for salvation?

  191. No.

  192. Is it necessary for sanctification?

  193. If God has commanded you to be baptized, and if he has provided the means and opportunity for baptism,

  194. and you say no to the Holy Spirit of God, then that is limiting your sanctification or your growth as a believer and follower of Jesus.

  195. Now, that doesn't mean that everyone who has ever put their faith in Jesus and hasn't been baptized for extenuating circumstances and different reasons,

  196. that doesn't mean they can't grow as a Christian.

  197. But for those who have the opportunity to, who are encouraged to do so, and read in the scriptures where God commands us to do that,

  198. then if you say no to that and say, I'm just too embarrassed or I just don't want to do that, then yes, that is wrong.

  199. You should be following the word of God in that way.

  200. And so it's an important step in publicly identifying yourself as a Jesus follower.

  201. Baptism is an important step to publicly partnering with the local church.

  202. The ordinance of baptism was given to the local church.

  203. Let's look in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  204. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  205. Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day about 3,000 in all.

  206. Can you imagine adding 3,000 people to our church in one day?

  207. We might have to find a different venue to meet.

  208. That would be just about all the people in Henrietta, wouldn't it?

  209. No, that's true.

  210. There would be a couple hundred left over.

  211. You're right.

  212. It's like, nope, I think there's more than that.

  213. Those who believed what Peter said when he preached the gospel to them,

  214. they were then baptized and in so doing added to the church.

  215. That is the pathway that God has often set forth in the New Testament for partnering with a church

  216. is through being baptized into that local body of believers.

  217. Again, this is not a part of salvation.

  218. It is a public testimony.

  219. It's a public identifying.

  220. Say, I'm not only identifying as a Jesus follower,

  221. I'm identifying with this group of Jesus followers.

  222. So when you see people moving these waters up here in the baptistry, getting baptized,

  223. they are being baptized into our assembly of believers.

  224. Here's the meaning.

  225. You see Jesus on the cross,

  226. and of course we stand him up in the baptistry.

  227. He died.

  228. He was buried.

  229. We died with Christ.

  230. We're buried with Christ.

  231. And then he was resurrected and raised to new life.

  232. So baptism points us to Jesus.

  233. Number two, the Lord's Supper points us to Jesus.

  234. The Lord's Supper points us to Jesus.

  235. Jesus is present with his Father.

  236. He is not in the communion elements.

  237. How many of you all think that's kind of obvious?

  238. Like when you pass these out and you eat them,

  239. you didn't see Jesus in that cup.

  240. Listen, this, believe it or not, has become a point of contention

  241. among many different religious assemblies and churches across the world.

  242. Jesus said, take, eat, this is my body.

  243. Drink the cup, this is my blood.

  244. And so sometimes people would take that literally and say,

  245. okay, this piece of bread that we tore off the loaf or this piece of bread

  246. that, you know, we crisped up and we're eating it,

  247. this is actually the physical body of Jesus who died on the cross, was buried.

  248. Here's the problem.

  249. The Bible teaches us that Jesus is with his Father.

  250. John 16 and verse 28.

  251. I came from the Father and entered the world.

  252. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.

  253. John 16.

  254. It is to your advantage that I am leaving,

  255. for if I do not leave, the Helper will not come to you.

  256. But if I go, I will send him to you.

  257. See, Jesus had to leave this world

  258. because the Holy Spirit of God was the one

  259. who was supposed to then go with us,

  260. all of us, all over the world.

  261. When Jesus was physically walking around on this planet,

  262. he couldn't be everywhere at once.

  263. He couldn't be everywhere all the time in his physical person.

  264. But when the Comforter came, when the Holy Spirit came,

  265. the Healer, the Helper,

  266. now he can go with us everywhere.

  267. So he said it's better this way.

  268. How many of you guys have wished that Jesus was still physically with us

  269. like he was all those years ago?

  270. I've wished that before.

  271. Like, man, they have so many questions.

  272. There's so many things I need help with.

  273. And I'm sure, and we went through the series on Wednesday nights,

  274. The Chosen,

  275. and of course, no theatrical portrayal that man puts together

  276. is going to totally capture the essence of the Christ

  277. walking around on this earth.

  278. But they did about as good a job as you could hope to, probably.

  279. And they did an outstanding job of trying to capture what we read in the Bible

  280. and how Jesus was when He walked around with His disciples

  281. and healing people and teaching and all this.

  282. And so it's an incredibly magnetic person.

  283. It's an incredibly magnetic personality.

  284. And you're drawn to that.

  285. I'm thinking, man, if Jesus was just here,

  286. He could solve all these problems.

  287. He could end all these disagreements.

  288. He could fix everything.

  289. But then we remember the Holy Spirit of God is actually here.

  290. God is here, just as present with us

  291. as Jesus was with those He walked with on this earth.

  292. And so we have access to just as much of God,

  293. even more so because He's with us wherever we go.

  294. How many times do you read in Scripture

  295. where Jesus would go off,

  296. and the disciples would be wondering where He is?

  297. We don't have to wonder where God is.

  298. Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, is always with us.

  299. If we have put our faith in Christ,

  300. then He goes everywhere with us.

  301. Now, that doesn't mean that we're eating His body

  302. when we eat the Lord's Supper.

  303. We're not drinking His blood when we drink the Lord's Supper.

  304. And this is one of these items

  305. that is not a first-level doctrinal issue.

  306. That means you can still go to heaven

  307. if you believe that you're eating Jesus' body

  308. and drinking His blood.

  309. I believe, according to the Bible, you're wrong about that.

  310. But as long as you put your faith in Christ for salvation,

  311. the forgiveness of your sins,

  312. you can still go to heaven

  313. and be wrong about something else.

  314. I am confident that I have done that thing,

  315. that first thing, that most important thing,

  316. the primary thing,

  317. and I've gotten that part right.

  318. Now, the secondary things,

  319. I think I'm right, but I might be wrong.

  320. I might absolutely be wrong.

  321. And there have been things that I've come across in my life

  322. and found out I was wrong about

  323. and had to change my position on things.

  324. But as a church,

  325. we believe that Jesus is present with His Father

  326. and the elements,

  327. the bread and the juice

  328. that we take at the Lord's Supper

  329. are symbolic of Jesus' body and blood.

  330. They remind us.

  331. The communion elements remind us of Jesus' sacrifice.

  332. They are reminders.

  333. They point us back to Him.

  334. They point our eyes back on Jesus

  335. because it's so easy

  336. to let the cares of this world

  337. get in the way of our relationship,

  338. our most important relationship.

  339. And so we put our eyes back on Jesus

  340. when we take communion.

  341. Say, what's communion?

  342. I thought we were calling it the Lord's Supper.

  343. Communion, Lord's Supper,

  344. basically we use them interchangeably.

  345. They kind of come different terms,

  346. theological terms that have been passed down

  347. through different types of churches, etc.

  348. You might have heard it called the Eucharist

  349. in some churches.

  350. Anybody grow up taking the Eucharist?

  351. That's usually more of a Catholic term.

  352. But basically these things

  353. are all talking about the Lord's Supper,

  354. which Jesus modeled for us,

  355. and we'll read some scripture about that later.

  356. But these elements, the bread and the juice,

  357. remind us of Jesus' sacrifice.

  358. So 1 Corinthians, here we go.

  359. 1 Corinthians 11.

  360. Would you turn over there in your Bibles if you could?

  361. 1 Corinthians 11 and verse 23.

  362. We'll spend just a little time there

  363. and then we will be done today.

  364. 1 Corinthians 11, verse 23.

    1 Corinthians 11:23

  365. For I received from the Lord

  366. what I also passed on to you.

  367. Paul is writing to the church in Corinth

  368. and he's talking directly about the Lord's Supper.

  369. On the night when he was betrayed,

  370. Jesus, the Lord Jesus,

  371. took bread and when he had given thanks,

  372. broke it and said,

  373. this is my body which is for you.

  374. Do this in remembrance of me.

  375. In the same way,

  376. he also took the cup after supper

  377. and said, this cup is the new covenant in my blood.

  378. Do this as often as you drink it

  379. in remembrance of me.

  380. For as often as you eat this bread

  381. and drink the cup,

  382. you proclaim the Lord's death

  383. until he comes.

  384. You see that last part?

  385. You proclaim the Lord's death

  386. until he comes.

  387. That is a job.

  388. When you see these kinds of phrases

  389. in the Bible,

  390. as you're reading through the Bible,

  391. let them pop out to you

  392. like big bright flashing lights.

  393. Proclaim the Lord's death

  394. until he comes.

  395. That sounds like something

  396. the church is given to do.

  397. It is.

  398. That is our mission.

  399. When we talked about going last Sunday,

  400. we talked about spreading the gospel last Sunday.

  401. That is what this is about.

  402. So when we take the Lord's supper,

  403. it points our eyes back to Jesus

  404. and we remind ourselves

  405. and anyone present

  406. about the sacrifice

  407. that Jesus made on the cross,

  408. which is an essential part of the gospel.

  409. So that is one of the things

  410. that the church is given to do,

  411. remind ourselves of Jesus' sacrifice,

  412. and then go out and proclaim it.

  413. And part of the way we do that

  414. is through the Lord's supper.

  415. So the communion elements inspire us

  416. to reflect and renew.

  417. Reflect and renew.

  418. Still back in 1 Corinthians.

  419. Let's go to the next few verses.

  420. Verse 27.

  421. So then,

  422. whoever eats the bread

  423. or drinks the cup of the Lord

  424. in an unworthy manner

  425. will be guilty of sin

  426. against the body

  427. and the blood of the Lord.

  428. Catch that?

  429. If you do this,

  430. what we're all going to do

  431. in just a moment,

  432. if you do this unworthily,

  433. you will be guilty of sin

  434. against the body

  435. and blood of the Lord.

  436. Let a person examine himself.

  437. In this way,

  438. let him eat the bread

  439. and drink from the cup.

  440. We are supposed to examine ourselves.

  441. Before we go on to this,

  442. I want to stay here

  443. for just a moment longer.

  444. We are supposed to reflect back

  445. on what God has been teaching us

  446. and working with us through.

  447. There might be failures

  448. going on in your life.

  449. There might be problems.

  450. There might be sin

  451. that you are continually giving into

  452. time and time again.

  453. There might be things

  454. you haven't repented of.

  455. There might be things

  456. you haven't confessed

  457. and made right.

  458. But this is a time

  459. to reflect on those things

  460. and let God renew you

  461. from the inside out.

  462. Let God make your heart right.

  463. There's not a 10-step program

  464. of penance

  465. that you have to go through

  466. to get right with God.

  467. It is simply putting your eyes

  468. back on Jesus,

  469. saying,

  470. God, I confess it.

  471. I'm sorry.

  472. Please forgive me.

  473. Thank you for your forgiveness

  474. that you've already promised.

  475. I know your blood

  476. has already washed it.

  477. You've already cleansed it.

  478. It doesn't affect

  479. my standing with you

  480. as a child with this father.

  481. But God, I know

  482. that I did what is wrong.

  483. I know I chased after the flesh

  484. and not the Holy Spirit.

  485. I know I let this bitterness

  486. get in my way

  487. or this selfishness

  488. get in my way.

  489. Whatever this sin is,

  490. we must make ourselves right

  491. before God

  492. before we then

  493. remind ourselves

  494. of His sacrifice

  495. and take these elements.

  496. So we should examine

  497. ourselves

  498. and then we can eat the bread

  499. and drink from the cup.

  500. Here's the key thought.

  501. The church ordinances

  502. are part of God's mission,

  503. not man's tradition.

  504. Y'all, it doesn't matter

  505. what the church

  506. has always done.

  507. Okay?

  508. It doesn't.

  509. It doesn't matter

  510. what the Catholic church

  511. has always done.

  512. It doesn't matter

  513. what the Baptist church

  514. has always done.

  515. It doesn't matter

  516. what First Baptist church

  517. of Henrietta

  518. has always done.

  519. unless it's what

  520. God has given

  521. to the church to do.

  522. Then it matters.

  523. There are good traditions

  524. that churches have adopted.

  525. You know why?

  526. Because they came from the Bible

  527. and God commanded them

  528. to do it.

  529. And then you build

  530. a rich legacy

  531. and tradition

  532. and heritage

  533. of obeying God

  534. and fulfilling His mission

  535. for the church.

  536. And that matters.

  537. So it matters

  538. that we've continually

  539. for 140 some odd years

  540. continued to gather

  541. in Henrietta, Texas

  542. and worship God

  543. and lift up Jesus.

  544. That's a tradition

  545. that matters.

  546. It matters

  547. that we have always tried

  548. to go out

  549. and spread the gospel

  550. to those around us.

  551. That matters.

  552. The church ordinances

  553. matter

  554. not because

  555. we've always done them.

  556. I pray that

  557. in another hundred years

  558. First Baptist

  559. Henrietta

  560. if God hasn't come back

  561. by then

  562. will still be

  563. carrying on

  564. these church ordinances.

  565. That they'll still

  566. be preaching the gospel.

  567. That they'll still

  568. be sending out people

  569. into the community

  570. to be a light

  571. in the darkness.

  572. I pray that they will be

  573. fulfilling God's mission

  574. not just man's tradition.

  575. So that's our key thought.

  576. What's our takeaway

  577. for today?

  578. These church ordinances

  579. we've been having

  580. quite a few people

  581. baptized this year.

  582. we're taking

  583. the Lord's Supper

  584. in just a moment.

  585. These church ordinances

  586. remind us

  587. to turn our eyes

  588. upon Jesus.

  589. When you see somebody

  590. stand up

  591. and fulfill

  592. the picture of Jesus

  593. hanging on the cross

  594. being buried

  595. and then rising back

  596. from the dead

  597. and you see them

  598. in that baptistry

  599. let's point our eyes

  600. back on Jesus

  601. and say God

  602. thank you.

  603. Thank you for your sacrifice.

  604. Thank you for your salvation.

  605. Thank you for the value

  606. you place on our lives

  607. that allows us

  608. to begin a new life

  609. with you.

  610. Old things are passed away.

  611. All things can become new

  612. with the Spirit of God.

  613. When we take

  614. this bread and juice

  615. in just a moment

  616. let's examine ourselves

  617. let's refocus

  618. our eyes on Jesus

  619. Hebrews chapter 12

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  620. says

  621. looking unto Jesus

  622. the author

  623. and the finisher

  624. of our faith.

  625. So

  626. we're going to have

  627. a moment

  628. of quiet prayer

  629. and reflection.

  630. come on up

  631. and play a little bit

  632. on the piano.

  633. Let's do that

  634. right now.

  635. Let's bow our heads.

  636. I'm going to ask

  637. a couple questions

  638. because I never want

  639. to let a Sunday go by

  640. without giving someone

  641. an opportunity

  642. to put their faith

  643. in Jesus Christ.

  644. For the rest of us

  645. in the room

  646. I pray that we would

  647. take this moment

  648. for quiet reflection

  649. to re-center

  650. our focus

  651. back on Jesus.

  652. whether it's

  653. family or work

  654. or relationships

  655. or whatever it is

  656. that might be

  657. competing

  658. for your focus.

  659. Ask the Holy Spirit

  660. of God

  661. to resist the devil

  662. and he will flee

  663. from you.

  664. Ask the Holy Spirit

  665. of God

  666. to forgive you

  667. of your failings.

  668. Claim that forgiveness

  669. and say

  670. God

  671. I repent

  672. of my wrongdoing

  673. increase my faith

  674. in you.

  675. Help me to walk

  676. more closely

  677. with you

  678. hand in hand.

  679. Show me what I need

  680. to do

  681. to make something

  682. right

  683. that I may need to.

  684. Let's do that

  685. right now

  686. at these moments.

  687. We'll give you

  688. just a few moments

  689. of personal

  690. quiet prayer.

  691. with everyone's heads

  692. bowed and eyes

  693. closed.

  694. Let me ask this question.

  695. If there's someone

  696. here today

  697. who knows

  698. that they need

  699. to put their

  700. faith in Jesus

  701. for salvation

  702. and forgiveness

  703. of their sins,

  704. would you slip

  705. your hand up

  706. right now?

  707. Nobody else

  708. is looking.

  709. Just slip

  710. your hand up.

  711. Thank you.

  712. Thank you.

  713. For everyone

  714. else,

  715. I pray that God

  716. would continue

  717. to penetrate

  718. our heart.

  719. God indwells us

  720. with his Holy Spirit

  721. but our hearts

  722. are still dark.

  723. Our flesh

  724. is weak.

  725. We are corrupted

  726. by sin.

  727. We need God

  728. to overwhelm

  729. that with his grace,

  730. with his goodness

  731. and turn our eyes

  732. back on Jesus.

  733. God,

  734. we thank you

  735. for speaking to us

  736. from your word.

  737. I pray that you

  738. would be with us

  739. as we observe

  740. this ordinance

  741. of the Lord's Supper

  742. as you did

  743. so many years ago.

  744. Help us to turn

  745. our eyes back

  746. on you.

  747. It's in Jesus'

  748. name we pray.

  749. Amen.

  750. Amen.

  751. Amen.

  752. Amen.

  753. Amen.

  754. Amen.

  755. Amen.

  756. Amen.

  757. Amen.

  758. Amen.

  759. Amen.

  760. Amen.

  761. Amen.

  762. Amen.

  763. Amen.

  764. Amen.

  765. Amen.

  766. Amen.

  767. Amen.

  768. Amen.

  769. Amen.

  770. Amen.

  771. Amen.

  772. Amen.

  773. Amen.

  774. Amen.
