  1. Well, good morning. We're going to continue on in our series in Ephesians this morning.

  2. If you would take the Word of God with me and go to Paul's letter to the Ephesians,

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  3. chapter 3, and we'll finish out to the first section of the book of Ephesians,

  4. who we are in Christ, our identity in Christ.

  5. The teens have been going over that on Wednesday nights,

  6. talking about their identity in Christ,

  7. and that's what we've all been looking at as a church in this first half of the book of Ephesians.

  8. So if you go to chapter 3, we're going to continue on verses 14 through 21, the end of the chapter.

  9. If you're able to, would you stand with me?

  10. And let's take the Word of God and read together Ephesians 3, verse 14.

    Ephesians 3:14

  11. For this reason, I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.

  12. I pray that he may grant you, according to the riches of his glory,

  13. to be strengthened with power in your inner being through his Spirit,

  14. and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

  15. I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love,

  16. may be able to comprehend with all the saints

  17. what is the length and width, height and depth of God's love,

  18. and to know Christ's love that surpasses knowledge,

  19. so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

  20. Now to him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think,

  21. according to the power that works in us,

  22. to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus,

  23. to all generations, forever and ever.

  24. Amen.

  25. God, I pray that you would bless the reading of your Word.

  26. I pray that you would speak to us.

  27. Show us how important it is

  28. to not forsake daily communication with you through prayer.

  29. And it's in Jesus' name we pray.

  30. Amen.

  31. You may be seated.

  32. Before we get started,

  33. is there any news from any burnt orange wearing people in the audience?

  34. Just want to get that out there.

  35. What elephant in the room kind of thing.

  36. No? We're still waiting?

  37. All right.

  38. Well then y'all just let me preach and don't tell me till the end, all right?

  39. So, there's a Jimmy Moses for Alabama

  40. and a few of us Longhorn fans are kind of waiting to see

  41. how this whole college football playoff thing works out.

  42. But let's take our minds off of that for just a few minutes

  43. and let's get into the book of Ephesians, all right?

  44. So, we've been talking in our series on Ephesians,

  45. of course, who we are and how we live.

  46. Much of the study from this book

  47. and kind of the outline for today's sermon in particular

  48. comes from this Christ-centered exposition commentary series

  49. and Pastor Tony Merida from out in North Carolina

  50. wrote that particular book in that series.

  51. The background of the book of Ephesians

  52. written by Apostle Paul around AD 62.

  53. Anno domini means in the year of our Lord, all right?

  54. So, that's kind of giving you that, that Tony was quizzing y'all on that.

  55. Tony's always good for a Bible quiz, man.

  56. Just trivia with Tony sometimes.

  57. It's awesome.

  58. The setting was Paul's Roman imprisonment

  59. and he was very familiar with this church in Ephesus,

  60. far away from Rome, had to be taken by courier,

  61. his letter to this church

  62. and then distributed to other churches around the area.

  63. But he knew this church well

  64. because he had been their pastor for three years.

  65. So, he was very intimate with these people

  66. and God gave him these words to write to them

  67. and then to send on to all of us for all time.

  68. The word of our Lord lives forever.

  69. The breakdown of the book of Ephesians,

  70. those first three chapters we're finishing up today,

  71. talks about who we are in Christ.

  72. Next Sunday, we will begin how we live for Christ,

  73. chapters four through six.

  74. We'll take a break for Christmas Eve Sunday

  75. and talk about that.

  76. But we'll continue on in our series in Ephesians

  77. the rest of the Sundays.

  78. So, part one, we're finishing up our identity in Christ,

  79. who we are in Him,

  80. and the text for today is Ephesians chapter three

  81. and verse 14.

  82. We have been having some fill-in-the-blank notes for you.

  83. I didn't get those in today, this week in time,

  84. so we've just got some blanks for you to jot down notes,

  85. but I encourage you to do that

  86. if you're in the habit of taking notes in the service.

  87. The theme for today's sermon is powerful prayer.

  88. Powerful prayer.

  89. Not just prayer, not just a rote religious exercise,

  90. not just something that you've seen others do

  91. and feel like you should,

  92. but praying, communicating with Almighty God with power.

  93. So that's what we're talking about.

  94. Number one this morning, pray with humility.

  95. Let's look back at the text.

  96. Pray with humility.

  97. For this reason, I kneel before the Father

  98. from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.

  99. That is Paul's expression of ultimate humility

  100. as he kneels before God.

  101. Daniel did it three times a day.

  102. He would kneel and cry out to his God,

  103. even in the face of imminent danger

  104. as he was breaking the law of the land to do so.

  105. But he was going to prostrate himself before God.

  106. He was going to humble himself before God.

  107. We have seen, even in Scripture

  108. and sometimes throughout Christian history,

  109. men and women who have a close relationship with God

  110. sometimes led to go even a step beyond kneeling

  111. and truly lie down prostrate on their face before God.

  112. Whatever it is that allows you to humble yourself

  113. as you come into communication

  114. with the Master of the universe,

  115. the Creator of all that is,

  116. and the Savior of our souls,

  117. that is what is essential to effectively pray with our Lord.

  118. We must pray with humility.

  119. Psalms chapter 95, the 95th Psalm,

    Psalms 95 chapter mention

  120. gives us a picture of this.

  121. O come, let us worship and bow down.

  122. Let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker,

  123. for He is our God,

  124. and we are the people of His pasture

  125. and the sheep of His hand.

  126. Remember that we are just sheep.

  127. We are just sheep.

  128. There's a story.

  129. Excuse me.

  130. There's a story I wanted to share with you all,

  131. and I need to pull it back up here for a minute.

  132. Have any of you heard of the story of Palm Monday?

  133. The story of the donkey.

  134. Y'all know about Palm Sunday, right?

  135. When the donkey carried Jesus through the streets of Jerusalem,

  136. everybody was casting palm fronds

  137. and celebrating the coming of the Messiah,

  138. the King that would deliver them from Rome,

  139. even though that's not what He was there to do.

  140. He was there to deliver them from their sins.

  141. But the little donkey,

  142. this fictional story is written about Palm Monday,

  143. what happened the day after.

  144. And the donkey awakened,

  145. his mind still savoring the afterglow

  146. of the most exciting day of his life.

  147. He carried Jesus, right?

  148. Never before had he felt such a rush of pleasure and pride.

  149. He walked into town and found a group of people

  150. by the well.

  151. I'll show myself to them, he thought.

  152. But they didn't notice him.

  153. They went on drawing their water and paid him no mind.

  154. Throw your garments down, he said crossly.

  155. Don't you know who I am?

  156. They just looked at him in amazement.

  157. Someone slapped him across the tail and ordered him to move.

  158. Miserable heathens, he muttered to himself.

  159. I'll just go to the market where the good people are.

  160. They'll remember me.

  161. But the same thing happened.

  162. No one paid any attention to the donkey

  163. as he strutted down the main street in front of the marketplace.

  164. The palm branches!

  165. Where are the palm branches?

  166. He shouted.

  167. Yesterday you threw palm branches.

  168. Hurt and confused,

  169. the donkey returned home to his mother.

  170. Foolish child, she said gently.

  171. Don't you realize that without him,

  172. you're just an ordinary donkey?

  173. Folks, can I remind us that without him,

  174. we're just ordinary donkeys?

  175. Without him, we are just sheep.

  176. Without him, we are nothing.

  177. But with him, we are children of the king.

  178. With him, we are blood-bought.

  179. We are redeemed.

  180. We are valuable.

  181. We are precious in his sight.

  182. We are his treasure.

  183. With him, all things are possible.

  184. But without him, we are nothing.

  185. So it's important to come humbly in prayer.

  186. Number two, pray for God's full power and full love.

  187. We read about this in Ephesians chapter 3 and verse 16.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  188. Pray for God's full power and full love.

  189. Paul writes,

  190. I pray that he may grant you,

  191. according to the riches of his glory,

  192. to be strengthened with power

  193. in your inner being through his spirit,

  194. and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

  195. I pray that you,

  196. being rooted and firmly established in love,

  197. may be able to comprehend with all the saints

  198. what is that length and width

  199. and height and depth of God's love,

  200. and to know Christ's love that surpasses knowledge,

  201. so that you may be filled with all the fullness

  202. for God's full power and full love.

  203. We see two key emphases here in this passage.

  204. It's power and it's love.

  205. So, we're talking about, first of all,

  206. the inner being.

  207. Look back at verse 16.

  208. He says,

  209. I pray that you would be strengthened

  210. with power in your inner being.

  211. If you'll notice something about God,

  212. he's always more concerned with the inside

  213. than he is the outside.

  214. We are generally just the opposite.

  215. We are far more concerned with the outside

  216. than we are the inside

  217. because we're selfish people.

  218. We're self-centered.

  219. We're self-absorbed.

  220. We're self-consumed.

  221. And so, as long as everyone else

  222. looks like everything's fine,

  223. then we don't have to worry about anything else.

  224. As long as everybody is dotting their I's

  225. and crossing their T's

  226. and everything seems fine,

  227. then we're okay

  228. and we don't have to be concerned.

  229. But God is far more concerned

  230. with what's going on in our hearts.

  231. 1 Samuel chapter 16.

    1 Samuel 16 chapter mention

  232. The Lord does not see as man sees.

  233. For man looks at the outward appearance.

  234. But God, the Lord, looks at what?

  235. The heart.

  236. He looks at the heart.

  237. He cares about what's going on inside.

  238. He cares about not how much we profess

  239. our love for Him,

  240. but how much we truly love Him

  241. on the inside.

  242. From the abundance of the heart,

  243. the mouth speaks.

  244. Eventually,

  245. what goes on on the inside

  246. will come out on the outside.

  247. But man, you can fool people

  248. for a long time, can't you?

  249. You can put on a good face.

  250. Sunday mornings when we all gather together,

  251. we can make it seem like

  252. we've got it all sorted out.

  253. We've got our lives under control.

  254. We're dressed up nicely

  255. and everything looks like it's A-OK.

  256. God knows the truth.

  257. He knows the reality.

  258. And He wants us to live in that space.

  259. He wants us to be real,

  260. be genuine, be authentic.

  261. For a long time,

  262. churches have struggled with that.

  263. Religion has seemingly focused more

  264. on the outward than it has

  265. on what's going on in the heart.

  266. And that's not God's religion.

  267. That's not what Jesus came to do.

  268. He came to save us from the inside out.

  269. And He'll save all of you.

  270. He'll save every bit.

  271. But transformation on the outside

  272. is a lifelong process.

  273. It is a journey called sanctification

  274. in which God is making you

  275. more and more into His image

  276. until someday you cast off

  277. this fleshly, sinful body

  278. and you take on your glorified body.

  279. And we get to live forever

  280. in heaven with Jesus.

  281. That's the good news, right?

  282. That's what we're all looking forward to.

  283. But until that day,

  284. this sanctification process is happening.

  285. But that is more essential

  286. to happen from the inside out

  287. rather than the outside in.

  288. Man, it's hard

  289. to just adapt yourself to something

  290. and truly be transformed.

  291. The transformation happens first

  292. through the power of the Holy Spirit of God

  293. because you and I can't change anybody.

  294. We can try.

  295. Wives, you ever tried to change your spouse?

  296. Don't raise your hand right now.

  297. Please.

  298. We all know the answer.

  299. Of course you have, right?

  300. We need it.

  301. But good luck, right?

  302. We can't really change anybody,

  303. but Jesus can.

  304. The Holy Spirit of God can.

  305. And so that is what we must be content with.

  306. God changing us on the inside.

  307. And then the adaptation happens.

  308. Then the transformation happens visibly.

  309. But God is more concerned with the heart.

  310. So it's all about that inner being.

  311. And then secondly,

  312. under this second point here,

  313. dwell.

  314. Get this concept of dwelling.

  315. Where do we see it?

  316. Back in Ephesians 3, verse 17.

    Ephesians 3:17

  317. That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

  318. What do we mean by this word dwell?

  319. All right, now I did a study of the Greek.

  320. It's this combination of two words.

  321. I'm not going to dive into a Greek lesson with you today.

  322. I took my four semesters of Greek in college,

  323. and I'm done.

  324. I'm done with that.

  325. All right?

  326. We're not going backwards here.

  327. But it is helpful sometimes to look back.

  328. And the concept that we get behind this word dwell

  329. is settling in.

  330. Putting down roots.

  331. Getting comfortable.

  332. What we've been trying to do in Henrietta

  333. for the last six months.

  334. Dwelling.

  335. That is what Christ wants to do in your heart.

  336. That is what Christ wants to do in your inner being.

  337. Is dwell there.

  338. Make it His home.

  339. Make it His domain.

  340. Rule through His Spirit in your heart and life.

  341. He wants to dwell.

  342. He wants to settle in there.

  343. Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  344. As I was doing my slides,

  345. I realized I use Colossians a lot.

  346. And there's a lot of parallels, I think,

  347. between Ephesians and Colossians.

  348. So we're kind of bouncing back and forth each Sunday

  349. between Ephesians and Colossians.

  350. But here we go.

  351. Colossians 3, verse 15.

    Colossians 3:15

  352. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.

  353. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

  354. There we have that word again.

  355. Let the word of Christ settle in

  356. and get comfortable in your heart,

  357. in your life.

  358. Let it rule there.

  359. Let it have its way.

  360. You ever had guests over and said,

  361. make yourself at home?

  362. Did you really mean that?

  363. Did you really want them to treat your house

  364. like they would their own home

  365. on an average Tuesday?

  366. Did you want them to leave their shoes on the floor

  367. and, you know, not put things away

  368. and leave the dishes in the sink

  369. and maybe clean up in the morning?

  370. Did you really want them

  371. to make themselves at home, right?

  372. But I think that is exactly

  373. the picture that we get of Christ

  374. embracing the mess that is us on the inside.

  375. The real us.

  376. The real us, right?

  377. Yeah, we're a mess inside.

  378. Yeah, we've got dishes sitting out.

  379. Yeah, we've got a mess to clean up.

  380. Like I said, we put on our best front,

  381. but we know inside things are not always

  382. exactly as we would want them to be.

  383. And that is where Christ wants to dwell.

  384. That's where he wants to live.

  385. That's where he wants to help you

  386. little by little clean up

  387. and morph into his image.

  388. And that's going to be a lifelong process.

  389. So don't get in a hurry.

  390. But Jesus can transform it.

  391. He's telling you,

  392. I'm not scared of the mess.

  393. I know it all.

  394. I know the worst of you,

  395. the worst you'll ever do.

  396. I know the worst you ever could do.

  397. I know what you're capable of.

  398. And I saved all of it.

  399. I transformed all of it.

  400. I redeemed all of it.

  401. I can help you.

  402. Let me dwell.

  403. And then experience love

  404. through this way, being secure.

  405. So what did we have?

  406. The inner being,

  407. dwelling, letting God settle in,

  408. and now experiencing his love.

  409. This was the other part here.

  410. We're talking about power.

  411. We're talking about love.

  412. We experience love,

  413. and we understand that God's love for us

  414. makes us secure.

  415. This is a secure love.

  416. Look back at Ephesians 3 again.

  417. The second part of verse 17.

  418. I pray that you being rooted

  419. and firmly established in love.

  420. Do you notice what it says?

  421. It does not say,

  422. Paul does not tell us,

  423. I want you to be rooted

  424. and firmly established in love.

  425. He says,

  426. I pray that you,

  427. this is why English is so awesome, okay?

  428. I pray that you, comma,

  429. being rooted and firmly established in love,

  430. comma,

  431. so there's a phrase right there.

  432. That's kind of parenthetical.

  433. It's like you could erase it

  434. and the sentence would still stand on its own, okay?

  435. I just lost half of you,

  436. but that's okay.

  437. I pray that you,

  438. skip down,

  439. may be able to comprehend with all saints

  440. what is the length and width,

  441. height and depth of God's love.

  442. Awesome.

  443. But what was that part we skipped?

  444. Being rooted and firmly established in love.

  445. He's saying,

  446. you already are.

  447. You are rooted and firmly established in God's love.

  448. How do we know that?

  449. Because we're His children.

  450. Because we accepted Him.

  451. Now, if you haven't,

  452. then you're not rooted and firmly established in Christ's love.

  453. If there's someone here with us today

  454. who has not yet made that once-in-a-lifetime decision

  455. to put your faith in Jesus

  456. for the forgiveness of your sins

  457. and becoming God's child,

  458. then this doesn't apply to you.

  459. You've got to make that first,

  460. most important decision.

  461. I'm not talking about coming to church.

  462. I'm not talking about cleaning up your life.

  463. I'm not talking about any of those things.

  464. I'm talking about just saying,

  465. I can't help myself.

  466. I need Jesus.

  467. And if you repent from your sin

  468. and turn to Jesus

  469. and believe Him enough,

  470. trust Him enough

  471. to say,

  472. I put all my faith in Him,

  473. then He'll save you from your sins.

  474. He'll cleanse you

  475. and He'll make you His child forever.

  476. So that is the most important thing.

  477. And then,

  478. if you do put your faith in Jesus

  479. and you are His child,

  480. then you're rooted

  481. and firmly established in His love.

  482. And that love is secure.

  483. It's secure forever.

  484. Romans 8 talks about this.

  485. Where are we here?

  486. Would you turn to Romans 8 with me real quick?

  487. Man.

  488. God's love makes us secure.

  489. And God's love is limitless.

  490. That's the second half of this.

  491. And Romans 8 kind of talks about all of it.

  492. The very end of the chapter here.

  493. Verses 38 and 39.

  494. I am persuaded that neither death,

  495. nor life,

  496. nor angels,

  497. nor rulers,

  498. nor things present,

  499. nor things to come,

  500. nor powers,

  501. nor height,

  502. nor depth.

  503. Remember that from over there in Ephesians 3?

  504. The length and width,

  505. the height and depth of God's love?

  506. It says,

  507. nothing,

  508. nor any created thing

  509. will be able to separate us

  510. from the love of God

  511. that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  512. That's the good news

  513. you come to church to hear about.

  514. That's the good news

  515. that we're reminded of

  516. whenever we open up God's Word.

  517. That is the good news

  518. that God loves us

  519. and nothing can change that.

  520. If you put your faith in Jesus,

  521. He says,

  522. you become His child

  523. and He will never leave you.

  524. He'll never abandon you.

  525. He'll never forsake you.

  526. No one else can change that

  527. and you can't change it either.

  528. You're now part of God's family.

  529. You've been regenerated,

  530. regened into the family of God.

  531. I mean, that's an incredible truth.

  532. And I pray we never get over it.

  533. I pray that never loses its meaning for us.

  534. God's love is secure

  535. and God's love is limitless.

  536. He says He casts our sins as far

  537. as the east is from the west.

  538. You can't get farther than that.

  539. He's forgiven us forever

  540. for everything.

  541. That's His love.

  542. Read about it there in Romans 8.

  543. Read about it there in Romans 8.

  544. Read about it there in Romans 8.

  545. And then experience this about God's love.

  546. Filling the heart more than the mind.

  547. This is why I use the word experience.

  548. Now sometimes you can get into this experiential Christianity

  549. which focuses on the tangible.

  550. It focuses on the things that you can actually see.

  551. And basically if God's not blessing you

  552. exactly how you want Him to,

  553. then God doesn't love you

  554. or God doesn't value you

  555. and vice versa.

  556. If God is, you know,

  557. giving you money, etc.

  558. It's this prosperity gospel.

  559. Then you'll be rich.

  560. If God loves you

  561. and values you

  562. and you're His child,

  563. then you'll never have a hard time

  564. and you'll always be rich.

  565. I don't see how that kind of thinking,

  566. obviously it doesn't line up

  567. with what the Bible teaches.

  568. I don't see how it could last very long.

  569. You know?

  570. At some point,

  571. that's going to ring very false, right?

  572. Usually it ends up with

  573. something like

  574. send money to me,

  575. the preacher who's telling you all this stuff

  576. so I can buy my second jet

  577. or something like that.

  578. I don't even have one.

  579. I don't know what's wrong with y'all,

  580. but

  581. still waiting on my first jet here.

  582. Somebody's going to buy me

  583. a little matchbox jet

  584. and say,

  585. here you go, preacher.

  586. Thank you.

  587. Anyway,

  588. so experience

  589. is not the most important thing

  590. that we need to rely on.

  591. We need to rely on

  592. what the Word of God says.

  593. That is the foundation

  594. that can't change.

  595. Our experience can be deceiving,

  596. it can fool us,

  597. it can lead us into wrong thinking,

  598. but the Word of God will not.

  599. However,

  600. God is experiential.

  601. God does want you

  602. to experience

  603. His love.

  604. He wants you to experience

  605. His goodness

  606. and not just

  607. fill your mind with it.

  608. He wants to dwell

  609. in your heart

  610. and fill it up

  611. with all these experiences

  612. of God's love

  613. because that is

  614. what's going to matter.

  615. That's what's going to change you

  616. is when He breaks through

  617. to the heart.

  618. It says it surpasses knowledge.

  619. So you can try all day

  620. to understand

  621. who God is,

  622. what He's like,

  623. why He loves us,

  624. and how much He loves us,

  625. and you'll never totally

  626. be able to wrap your mind

  627. around it.

  628. It's beyond human comprehension.

  629. It surpasses knowledge.

  630. But instead,

  631. you can be filled

  632. with the fullness of God

  633. despite not being able

  634. to fully grasp

  635. the height and depth,

  636. the length and width

  637. of God's love

  638. and who God is.

  639. You can still be filled

  640. with His fullness

  641. because we're talking

  642. about the inner being.

  643. We're not just talking

  644. about the mind.

  645. That's why we say

  646. you experience God's love

  647. more in your heart

  648. than your mind.

  649. Andy Stanley,

  650. son of Charles Stanley.

  651. Anybody ever listen

  652. to Charles Stanley

  653. on TV or radio,

  654. read his books,

  655. that kind of thing?

  656. Yeah.

  657. Andy's a little different.

  658. He's gotten into,

  659. you know,

  660. some takes on things

  661. that I don't always

  662. necessarily agree with,

  663. but a lot of the things

  664. he says is valuable

  665. and this one is very important

  666. and key to what

  667. we're talking about today.

  668. Read that again.

  669. Knowledge alone

  670. makes Christians haughty.

  671. Application

  672. makes us holy.

  673. Jesus said,

  674. be holy

  675. for I am holy.

  676. You have to not just know,

  677. not just fill your head,

  678. with Bible knowledge,

  679. with theological understanding,

  680. not just fill your head

  681. with all these facts

  682. about God.

  683. Say, look at me.

  684. I can answer all your

  685. Bible trivia questions

  686. and I can know

  687. exactly how and when

  688. and it happened in the Bible,

  689. but instead,

  690. how is that applying

  691. in your life?

  692. How is that actually

  693. making you more holy?

  694. It happens

  695. when it takes root,

  696. when it's firmly established.

  697. It happens

  698. when you let Christ

  699. dwell in you,

  700. in your heart,

  701. not just your mind.

  702. You understand

  703. the difference there?

  704. We're saved

  705. through faith

  706. in our heart

  707. and that's the exact

  708. same way

  709. that we grow

  710. closer in our relationship

  711. with God

  712. is through the heart.

  713. it's not just the mind.

  714. Yeah, you have to have

  715. understanding

  716. that you are a sinner.

  717. You have to have

  718. understanding

  719. and knowledge

  720. that Jesus did die

  721. on the cross,

  722. that he did rise

  723. from the dead,

  724. that he is willing

  725. and able to save you

  726. if you put your faith

  727. in him for the forgiveness

  728. of your sins.

  729. You have to know

  730. all those things,

  731. but the faith

  732. has to come

  733. from the heart

  734. and nothing changes

  735. after salvation.

  736. That's still

  737. where he wants

  738. to reside.

  739. that's still

  740. where he wants

  741. to dwell

  742. and help you grow.

  743. So knowledge alone

  744. just makes us

  745. proud of ourselves,

  746. just makes us haughty,

  747. but applying it,

  748. that can make us

  749. more like God,

  750. holy.

  751. So,

  752. number three,

  753. we spent a long time

  754. on number two,

  755. but quickly,

  756. number three,

  757. pray with great expectations.

  758. Great expectations.

  759. This finishes out

  760. Ephesians 3,

  761. this finishes out

  762. the first section,

  763. the first half

  764. of the book of Ephesians.

  765. Pray with great expectations.

  766. Look back at verse 20

  767. of Ephesians 3.

  768. Now to him

  769. who is able

  770. to do above

  771. and beyond

  772. all that we ask

  773. or think,

  774. according to the power

  775. that works in us,

  776. to him

  777. be glory in the church

  778. and in Christ Jesus

  779. to all generations

  780. forever and ever.

  781. Amen.

  782. Expect

  783. great things

  784. from God.

  785. Pray with great

  786. expectations.

  787. Expect, number one,

  788. that God is able.

  789. When we pray,

  790. expect

  791. that God

  792. can.

  793. I can't,

  794. but God

  795. can.

  796. Let's say that together.

  797. Ready?

  798. I can't,

  799. but God

  800. can.

  801. Do you believe that?

  802. You believe it in your heart?

  803. Amen.

  804. That is praying

  805. with great expectations.

  806. We know

  807. and we expect

  808. because we believe it

  809. in our heart,

  810. not just in our mind,

  811. but in our heart

  812. by faith

  813. that God

  814. is able.

  815. We see that there

  816. in the very first part

  817. of verse 20.

  818. To him

  819. who is able

  820. to do above

  821. and beyond

  822. all that we ask

  823. or think.

  824. And then secondly,

  825. expect that God

  826. will work in me.

  827. God will work

  828. in me.

  829. Expect that.

  830. Don't expect

  831. how he will work.

  832. Don't expect

  833. what he will do

  834. because that's

  835. putting ourselves

  836. in God's shoes

  837. and determining

  838. what is best.

  839. We don't know

  840. what is best.

  841. We take our

  842. requests to him.

  843. We take our

  844. petitions to him.

  845. We take our

  846. concerns to him.

  847. We take our

  848. annoyances to him.

  849. We take our

  850. fears to him.

  851. We lay all of this

  852. at his feet

  853. and then we say,

  854. God, please work.

  855. And then we expect

  856. that he will work

  857. because we know

  858. he's able.

  859. We believe it.

  860. And so now

  861. we expect him to work.

  862. We see that

  863. in the second part

  864. of verse 20.

  865. According to the power

  866. that works in us.

  867. Where does that power

  868. come from?

  869. It's not you.

  870. It's not me.

  871. It comes from God

  872. in us.

  873. It comes from God

  874. dwelling in us.

  875. So we expect

  876. that God will work

  877. in us.

  878. And then lastly,

  879. we expect

  880. that God

  881. will be glorified.

  882. We expect that

  883. he'll get the glory.

  884. This is praying

  885. with power.

  886. This is praying

  887. biblically.

  888. This is praying

  889. how God wants us

  890. to communicate

  891. with him.

  892. We expect

  893. that he is able.

  894. We expect

  895. that he will work.

  896. And we expect

  897. that he will be glorified.

  898. Verse 21,

  899. to him be all

  900. the glory

  901. in the church

  902. and in Christ Jesus

  903. to all generations

  904. forever and ever.

  905. Amen.

  906. We expect

  907. that he will be glorified.

  908. If he doesn't

  909. get the glory,

  910. then it's not worth doing.

  911. If God

  912. doesn't get

  913. the glory,

  914. then he won't

  915. accomplish it

  916. through us.

  917. It can be a minute thing.

  918. It can be a tiny

  919. little thing.

  920. We're not talking

  921. about significance.

  922. We're talking about

  923. him getting the glory.

  924. It can be

  925. the tiniest little thing.

  926. You lost your keys

  927. somewhere

  928. and you pray for God,

  929. please show me

  930. where my keys are

  931. and he leads you

  932. to them and you say,

  933. thank you God,

  934. you get the glory

  935. for that.

  936. It can be

  937. the simplest

  938. little thing,

  939. but as long

  940. as God

  941. gets the glory,

  942. that's when

  943. he will work.

  944. So we expect

  945. him to get

  946. the glory.

  947. William Carey,

  948. they call him

  949. the father

  950. of modern missions.

  951. We're taking up

  952. an offering today

  953. for the Lottie Moon

  954. Christmas offering

  955. to support missions

  956. around the world

  957. and this was

  958. a man they called

  959. the father

  960. of modern missions,

  961. worked in India

  962. for his entire life

  963. just about

  964. and he said,

  965. expect great things

  966. from God

  967. and then attempt

  968. great things

  969. for God.

  970. If you truly expect

  971. God to do

  972. great things,

  973. then you'll be able

  974. to get past your fear

  975. of attempting

  976. great things.

  977. Not saying the fear

  978. will be gone

  979. completely,

  980. but if you truly

  981. expect from Christ

  982. dwelling in your heart

  983. that you have

  984. great expectations

  985. for God to work,

  986. then you'll go out

  987. and attempt something

  988. great for God.

  989. you'll step out

  990. of your comfort zone

  991. and you'll say,

  992. God, work through me.

  993. Whatever it is,

  994. you'll talk to a family

  995. member about Jesus.

  996. You'll give more

  997. to God's work

  998. than you're used

  999. to giving.

  1000. You'll deal

  1001. with a broken

  1002. relationship that you've

  1003. been putting off

  1004. for a long time.

  1005. Whatever it is,

  1006. you'll attempt

  1007. great things for God

  1008. because you expect

  1009. God to work.

  1010. So, to recap,

  1011. powerful prayer,

1012. what does it look like?

  1013. Praying with humility.

  1014. Praying for God's

  1015. full power

  1016. and full love.

  1017. And praying

  1018. with great

  1019. expectations.

  1020. What's our

  1021. takeaway today?

  1022. Ask God

  1023. to help you

  1024. take the next step

  1025. in your prayer life.

  1026. Very simple.

  1027. But what is it?

  1028. What is the next

  1029. step for you?

  1030. What's the next

  1031. step in your

  1032. prayer life?

  1033. You've got your

  1034. regular life.

  1035. You've got the life

  1036. that everybody sees

  1037. and you interact

  1038. with people,

  1039. but then you have

  1040. your personal,

  1041. private,

  1042. prayer life

  1043. with God.

  1044. Only two

1045. are a part of that.

  1046. You and God.

  1047. What's the next

  1048. step in your

  1049. prayer life?

  1050. is it just

  1051. praying more?

  1052. Is it praying

  1053. more with humility?

  1054. Is it praying

  1055. more for God's

  1056. full love,

  1057. for His full power?

  1058. Is it praying

  1059. with more

  1060. expectation

  1061. for God

  1062. to actually work?

  1063. What is it

  1064. for you

  1065. that would

  1066. constitute

  1067. the next step

  1068. in your prayer life?

  1069. Would you pray

  1070. with me right now?

1071. Would you bow your heads?

  1072. Lord,

  1073. please show us

  1074. what it is

  1075. that would be

  1076. the next step.

  1077. It's going to be

  1078. different for

  1079. every one of us,

  1080. but there is not

  1081. a man or a woman

  1082. or a child

  1083. in this room

  1084. today

  1085. who does not

  1086. need to take

  1087. a next step.

  1088. I need to.

  1089. Everybody in this

  1090. church

  1091. needs to take

  1092. a next step

  1093. in their prayer life

  1094. with you.

  1095. God,

  1096. I ask that you

  1097. would not leave us

  1098. alone,

  1099. that your Holy Spirit

  1100. would stay on us

  1101. continually prompting us

  1102. and nudging us

1103. to take that next step.

  1104. Maybe it's praying

  1105. more regularly

  1106. and not going

  1107. hours and days

  1108. and weeks

  1109. at a time

  1110. without communicating

  1111. with our good Father,

1112. the one who loves us most.

  1113. Maybe it's recognizing

1114. that God's not as concerned

  1115. with all the outward

  1116. that we have

1117. such a hard time with.

  1118. He's concerned

  1119. with what's going on

  1120. on the inside.

1121. Help us to lay that

  1122. in your feet.

1123. Leave that in your hands

  1124. and say,

  1125. God,

  1126. please dwell

  1127. in my heart.

1128. Dwell in my heart today.

  1129. Dwell in my heart

  1130. right now.

  1131. We'll give you

1132. all the glory for it.

1133. And it's in Jesus' name

  1134. we pray.

  1135. Amen.

  1136. Church,

  1137. would you stand

  1138. to your feet

  1139. if you're able to?

  1140. For just a moment,

1141. I'm going to be down front.

1142. If you'd like to come forward

  1143. and pray with me.

1144. I forgot to do this

  1145. and I don't like

1146. to let a Sunday go by.

  1147. So right now,

  1148. with everyone

  1149. looking up this way,

  1150. if there's someone

  1151. who doesn't know Jesus

  1152. as your Savior

  1153. and you'd like

  1154. to make a decision

1155. to turn from your sin

1156. and turn to Jesus today,

  1157. would you just

1158. slip your hand up real quick

1159. so I can pray for you?

  1160. Awesome.

  1161. Thank you.

  1162. All right.

  1163. If that's you,

1164. I'd like you to come down front.

1165. Just step out into the aisle.

  1166. Come down front

  1167. and meet with me

  1168. right down here.

  1169. I'll pray with you.

1170. And if there's anybody else

  1171. who needs prayer,

  1172. how many people

  1173. would be able to,

  1174. listen,

  1175. don't be ashamed.

1176. How many would be able to say,

  1177. God spoke to me

  1178. about my prayer life

1179. and I need prayer right now.

1180. Would you slip your hand up as well?

1181. Let's pray for each other.

  1182. All right.

1183. You can put your hands down.

  1184. Use this altar.

1185. You can come pray by yourself.

1186. You can meet me down front,

  1187. but use this altar.

1188. If you'd like to join this church

1189. and put your membership here,

  1190. meet me down front.

1191. We'll have that conversation as well.

1192. You move as God leads you.
