  1. Book of Ephesians, we are continuing on chapter 5.

  2. Chapter 5. How many of you brought your Bible with you this morning?

  3. Wonderful. I love it. I actually got some Bibles waved at me right there. That was fun.

  4. How many of you have the Bible on your phone? You're going to use that this morning?

  5. That's alright. Don't be ashamed. It's okay. Own it.

  6. You've just given in to the technological takeover of the world. That's alright.

  7. I'm kidding. I do it every day, so no problem.

  8. Yeah, it's a nice advantage to have that.

  9. Whatever you're looking at, I hope it's a copy of God's Word this morning.

  10. There should be one in the few back in front of you if you don't have one there.

  11. Ephesians chapter 5. By way of review, we have gone through this book, the first four chapters of it.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  12. It's talking about who we are and how we live.

  13. Y'all notice the difference in this slide here today?

  14. Alright, I've had this top left book up there for quite a while.

  15. I consult that regularly in my study for this series.

  16. But I've also added in the Bible exposition commentary from Warren Wearsby.

  17. That's a great resource as well for anyone who wants to dive into a more in-depth study of the Bible.

  18. The breakdown, I'm sorry, the background of the book of Ephesians written by the Apostle Paul around the year AD 62.

  19. And he was in prison at the time.

  20. I say, what did you do in prison?

  21. Well, I wrote a book of the Bible.

  22. So that was quite an accomplishment that God breathed into Paul to write down God's words for us that have lasted for all time.

  23. And he was very familiar with this church in Ephesus.

  24. He had been their pastor for about three years and then wrote this letter back to them.

  25. We can read about his exploits in Ephesus in Acts chapter 19.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  26. And of course, the breakdown of the book, it's nice and handy, divided up into two sections, chapter 1 through chapter 3.

  27. Who we are in Christ, chapters 4 through the end of the book.

  28. How we live for Christ.

  29. The identity and then the practical side.

  30. What should we then do with our newfound identity in Christ?

  31. So that's the part we're in right now.

  32. The second half, how we live for Christ.

  33. Let's look at Ephesians chapter 5, verses 1.

    Ephesians 5:1

  34. And we'll read down through 17.

  35. I'm reading from the Christian Standard Bible.

  36. I know we've been up and down a good bit during this service.

  37. If you're able to join us in standing one more time, let's do it again one more time in honor of God's word.

  38. Ephesians chapter 5, verse 1.

    Ephesians 5:1

  39. Therefore, be imitators of God.

  40. We heard about it in our children's time just a moment ago with Miss Sarah.

  41. Imitators of God as dearly loved children.

  42. Walk in love as Christ also loved us and gave himself for us.

  43. A sacrificial and fragrant offering to God.

  44. But sexual immorality and any impurity or greed should not even be heard of among you.

  45. As is proper for saints.

  46. Obscene and foolish talking or crude joking are not suitable.

  47. But rather giving thanks.

  48. For know and recognize this.

  49. Every sexually immoral or impure or greedy person who is an idolater does not have an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

  50. Let no one deceive you with empty arguments.

  51. For God's wrath is coming on the disobedient because of these things.

  52. Therefore, do not become their partners.

  53. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.

  54. Live as children of light.

  55. For the fruit of the light consists of all goodness, righteousness, and truth.

  56. Testing what is pleasing to the Lord.

  57. Don't participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but instead expose them.

  58. For it is shameful even to mention what is done by them in secret.

  59. Everything exposed by the light is made visible.

  60. For what makes everything visible is light.

  61. Therefore, it is said, get up, sleeper, and rise up from the dead.

  62. And Christ will shine on you.

  63. Pay careful attention then to how you live.

  64. Not as unwise people, but as wise.

  65. Making the most of the time.

  66. Because the days are evil.

  67. So don't be foolish.

  68. But understand what the Lord's will is.

  69. God, I ask that you would reveal to us what exactly you would have us to learn today.

  70. From your word.

  71. May your spirit have free reign and ability to work in our hearts.

  72. And we'll thank you and give you all the glory in Jesus' name.

  73. Amen.

  74. You may be seated.

  75. Thank you for standing.

  76. How many of you have been up to the Colorado Rocky Mountains?

  77. Anybody?

  78. Yeah, good number.

  79. That's awesome.

  80. How many of you have been to the Marble, Colorado area?

  81. I would have been surprised if there had been a hand raised.

  82. That is a very obscure little part of Colorado.

  83. And then in that area, Marble itself is a very small town.

  84. And the reason they called it Marble, Colorado was this marble quarry that can be found up in the mountains.

  85. And you have to hike up to it.

  86. The roads are all impassable.

  87. And there's three big mountains around there.

  88. The one closest to the marble quarry is Treasure Mountain.

  89. Well, there used to be a campground up there.

  90. I don't know if it's even there anymore.

  91. It could be.

  92. But I haven't been there since I was a kid.

  93. But every year, my dad and my older brother, who will be here next week,

  94. and I used to go up there just about every year for a little father-son getaway.

  95. So my dad knew the owner of this campground.

  96. And we would go up there before the camp season would open.

  97. So we'd be there, and the camp owner wouldn't be there,

  98. but he'd let us through and let us go stay at this campground.

  99. And there'd still be snow everywhere.

  100. And it was an interesting time.

  101. It was a lot of fun.

  102. For one thing, we would go to Sam's Club or Costco or something before we ever got up to the remote mountain area.

  103. And we'd stock up for that week with all kinds of provisions.

  104. And, you know, we'd get our sodas.

  105. And we wouldn't stick the sodas in the refrigerator.

  106. We'd stick them in the little creek that ran right outside of the cabin.

  107. And they'd be way colder than you could ever get in the refrigerator.

  108. There's a lot of fun.

  109. So we would have a blast.

  110. And the point of this, the reason I'm bringing it up today,

  111. for one thing, it's really pretty.

  112. The next thing is, we would always take hikes.

  113. Just about every day, we'd take some kind of hike.

  114. And at some point during that week,

  115. and there were even some years,

  116. we'd bring another dad and his son with us

  117. and kind of have more of a friend-type week

  118. rather than just father and son.

  119. But we would always go up and do this hike up to the top of Treasure Mountain.

  120. And that was the goal, try to get as far up.

  121. And if we could actually reach the summit, that'd be a lot of fun.

  122. And these are 11, 12, 13,000-foot mountain peaks.

  123. So not, you know, super high like the Himalayas or something,

  124. but still a pretty good hike.

  125. And this was a lot of fun.

  126. But I was probably, I don't know, in the range we were doing this,

  127. I was probably anywhere from 8 to 15 or so.

  128. So the first few years,

  129. they wouldn't let me go all the way to the top of the mountain.

  130. But then eventually, I remember the year I finally got to do it.

  131. And especially that first year,

  132. my dad would lead out in front,

  133. and he would say,

  134. okay, now, once we get past the tree line and all this,

  135. you really just need to walk where I walk.

  136. Step in my footsteps.

  137. Because otherwise,

  138. for one thing, my legs were a whole lot shorter.

  139. For another thing,

  140. he'd been doing that path for years

  141. and kind of knew where to go

  142. and where the tricky spots would be.

  143. And he said,

  144. if you go out and forge your own path,

  145. you're liable to get into a deep snow drift.

  146. It'd be hard to get out of.

  147. You might hit something that makes you fall or whatever.

  148. So he'd say,

  149. just walk where I walk.

  150. I wish there was like some kind of,

  151. you know,

  152. incredible climax to the story,

  153. but there isn't really.

  154. Because I actually did it.

  155. I actually walked where he walked.

  156. The only time I didn't really

  157. was when we were still in the trees.

  158. And I thought,

  159. okay, well, we're not really past the tree line,

  160. so it's okay.

  161. So I kind of ventured off on my own.

  162. And sure enough,

  163. went through this big bunch of snow

  164. and wound up with my boot in a little stream

  165. that was running underneath the snow

  166. and I couldn't see it.

  167. So then everything got wet.

  168. And the problem is,

  169. in that kind of deal,

  170. you can't just get wet

  171. and then keep going.

  172. If you get wet,

  173. you got to go back

  174. and get out of the wet clothes

  175. and socks and all that.

  176. Because otherwise,

  177. it'll freeze.

  178. Nobody wants that.

  179. So that cut short

  180. my little hike that day.

  181. But it is,

  182. I learned the importance of,

  183. okay,

  184. you've really got to walk

  185. where your guide

  186. tells you to walk.

  187. Step literally

  188. in his boot prints.

  189. And unrelated to this,

  190. but I remember the year

  191. when my brother decided

  192. to be the point man,

  193. so to speak,

  194. and go out

  195. and blaze the trail for us

  196. on up ahead.

  197. And then he came running back

  198. not too long after that,

  199. totally out of breath,

  200. and he said,

  201. a mountain lion

  202. just ran across my path.

  203. It's about 15 feet in front of me.

  204. Just boom.

  205. I was like,

  206. okay,

  207. we're all going to stay together

  208. as a group now.

  209. So that was a lot of fun.

  210. But I definitely learned

  211. the importance of walking

  212. where I was supposed to walk.

  213. So look back.

  214. Well, before we do,

  215. I want to show you this verse.

  216. 1 Peter 2, 21.

  217. You were called to do this

  218. because Christ also suffered for you,

  219. leaving you an example

  220. that you should,

  221. let's read it together.

  222. Follow in his steps.

  223. Follow in his steps.

  224. That's exactly what God called us to do.

  225. Walk in my boot prints.

  226. I'll keep you out of the real bad snowdrifts.

  227. I'll keep you from getting wet

  228. in the streets.

  229. I'll keep you on the path

  230. that I know you need to walk.

  231. This is the best path for you to walk.

  232. And I remember at times in Colorado

  233. when I would look over and say,

  234. it looks like we can make it easier over there.

  235. And he'd say,

  236. no,

  237. underneath all that

  238. is loose shale

  239. and we'll fall.

  240. I remember at times when,

  241. you know,

  242. we were going back down the mountain.

  243. And sometimes that's the trickiest part

  244. is going down the mountain

  245. rather than going up.

  246. It's easier to fall going down.

  247. And I remember there would be times

  248. when he'd say,

  249. okay,

  250. now on this part,

  251. you need to sit down

  252. and slide down

  253. because it's actually formed a glacier over here.

  254. And we'll get down a whole lot better

  255. and easier

  256. and there's snow at the bottom

  257. to impact our landing and all that.

  258. We just need to slide down now.

  259. And I wouldn't have known that

  260. if I hadn't walked that path before.

  261. But can I remind every one of us,

  262. Jesus came to this earth himself.

  263. He was born a man.

  264. The Bible says he was tempted

  265. in every area

  266. that you and I get tempted in.

  267. He literally walked this path of life before us.

  268. He knows exactly what we can go through.

  269. He knows all the arrows

  270. that the devil will shoot at us.

  271. He's heard it all before.

  272. And he can show us

  273. where to place our feet

  274. as we go through this life.

  275. And that's what we're called to do.

  276. Follow in his steps.

  277. So the title of our sermon today

  278. is How to Walk in the Footsteps of Jesus.

  279. How to Walk in the Footsteps of Jesus.

  280. Number one, you've got it in your bulletin.

  281. Number one, walk in love.

  282. Walk in love.

  283. Back in verse one, Ephesians chapter five.

  284. Be imitators of God

  285. as dearly loved children

  286. and walk in love

  287. as Christ also loved us,

  288. gave himself for us.

  289. What does it mean

  290. be imitators as dearly loved children?

  291. I love this quote by Mark Twain,

  292. the famous author

  293. and kind of comic writer.

  294. He said,

  295. children are natural mimics

  296. who act like their parents

  297. despite every effort

  298. to teach them good manners.

  299. Some of you didn't get that,

  300. but I saw a couple jokes.

  301. children are natural mimics

  302. who will act like their parents

  303. despite every effort

  304. that we make

  305. to teach them good manners.

  306. In other words,

  307. yeah, do as I say,

  308. not as I do, right?

  309. But children usually do what we do

  310. rather than always

  311. what we tell them to do, right?

  312. So that is the point

  313. is that children are imitators.

  314. They're mimics.

  315. Children will do

  316. what they see usually.

  317. That's how we learned.

  318. It's how we learned to talk,

  319. hearing others talk around us.

  320. It's how we learned

  321. to live our lives

  322. and do the things

  323. that we do every day

  324. is usually by seeing others

  325. model that for us.

  326. So Philippians chapter two,

  327. verse five,

  328. let this mind be in you,

  329. which was also in Christ Jesus

  330. who made himself

  331. of no reputation,

  332. took upon him

  333. the form of a servant,

  334. was made in the likeness of men

  335. and being found in fashion

  336. as a man,

  337. he humbled himself,

  338. became obedient unto death,

  339. even the death of the cross.

  340. So this is the mind

  341. that we should have.

  342. The mindset that we should have

  343. is imitating,

  344. mimicking,

  345. copying,

  346. learning from

  347. Jesus.

  348. He is our example.

  349. So what did he do?

  350. What is it we're supposed

  351. to learn from him?

  352. What are we supposed

  353. to mimic from him

  354. or imitate?

  355. He made himself

  356. of no reputation.

  357. That goes against

  358. what we do.

  359. You and I don't want

  360. to make ourselves

  361. of no reputation.

  362. We want to build up

  363. our reputation

  364. and make it as big

  365. and great as we can.

  366. We want to exalt ourselves.

  367. We want to promote ourselves.

  368. When you're in the job site,

  369. you know,

  370. oftentimes you're going

  371. for some kind of promotion,

  372. more pay,

  373. better hours,

  374. better perks,

  375. whatever it is.

  376. You're trying to build up

  377. your reputation.

  378. Jesus had the opposite mindset.

  379. He made himself

  380. of no reputation.

  381. He took upon him

  382. the form of a servant.

  383. He was made

  384. in the likeness of men.

  385. He was God.

  386. He was the son of God.

  387. Left heaven's throne

  388. and all the majesty

  389. and glory

  390. and humbled himself

  391. to become a servant.

  392. Humbled himself

  393. and became obedient

  394. unto death.

  395. This is what we're

  396. supposed to imitate.

  397. It's a mind shift.

  398. It's different.

  399. We got to stop

  400. the way we've been thinking

  401. and consciously choose

  402. to imitate someone else.

  403. So this is hard to read

  404. probably from where

  405. you're sitting,

  406. but I'll try to read it

  407. off for you.

  408. Let me give you

  409. the scriptural background

  410. before we get there.

  411. So we said,

  412. be imitators of God.

  413. Walk in love.

  414. Now,

  415. when you say love

  416. in today's world,

  417. oftentimes,

  418. we might say love,

  419. but what is heard

  420. is lust.

  421. There's a big difference

  422. between love and lust.

  423. And that's why

  424. in verse 3,

  425. it dives straight

  426. into this comparison,

  427. this contrast.

  428. Sexual immorality,

  429. impurity,

  430. greed should not even

  431. be heard of among you.

  432. Verse 4,

  433. obscene or foolish talking

  434. or crude joking.

  435. Don't do it.

  436. Verse 5,

  437. every sexually immoral

  438. or impure or greedy person

  439. who is an idolater

  440. does not have an inheritance

  441. in the kingdom of God.

  442. So what are we talking about?

  443. The difference in love and lust

  444. and how you know,

  445. and this is for young people,

  446. older people alike,

  447. is one,

  448. the column on the left

  449. is love.

  450. Godly agape love.

  451. Not getting into that idea

  452. of the word agape,

  453. but that's the form of love

  454. that God showed to us.

  455. There's agape love.

  456. There's phileo love,

  457. which is more of a familial

  458. or friendship type love.

  459. And then there is the,

  460. obviously,

  461. the erotic love,

  462. and that's where you get into lust

  463. and that kind of thing.

  464. So on the left,

  465. we have the love

  466. that God showed for us,

  467. which is that agape love.

  468. That means sacrificial,

  469. holding nothing back.

  470. Everything I have,

  471. I will lay down

  472. out of my love for you.

  473. That's the kind of love

  474. that God showed us on the cross.

  475. So what does that look like?

  476. It's unconditional.

  477. Lust, on the other hand,

  478. or what some people would call love,

  479. is conditional.

  480. I will love you if such and such.

  481. God did not do that.

  482. He loved us despite all these things

  483. that would normally erode love.

  484. On the left,

  485. it's patient and long-suffering.

  486. It'll last.

  487. On the right,

  488. lust, temporary and finicky.

  489. On the left,

  490. love gives first from abundance.

  491. On the right,

  492. it takes first,

  493. constantly comparing and always needy.

  494. What does it mean

  495. it'll give first from abundance?

  496. It means that there is plenty of love.

  497. That's not a shallow amount.

  498. It's not going to run dry.

  499. And I can promise you

  500. God's love for you and for me

  501. will never run dry.

  502. He'll never run out of love for us.

  503. And it'll always give first.

  504. He won't take first.

  505. Girls, can I remind you,

  506. if a guy tells you he loves you,

  507. but the first thing that he wants

  508. is something from you,

  509. that's not love.

  510. Right?

  511. That's not love.

  512. Give first.

  513. And then on the left,

  514. always available

  515. and always listening.

  516. And on the right,

  517. randomly interested,

  518. limited attention.

  519. Randomly interested,

  520. limited attention.

  521. Think through the relationships

  522. that you have.

  523. Think through the relationships

  524. you have in your life.

  525. Is it love?

  526. Is it godly love

  527. or is it human love

  528. that might even be

  529. categorized as lust?

  530. And then on the left,

  531. desires unity and harmony.

  532. And on the right,

  533. it's inconsistent.

  534. It's discordant.

  535. It's not unified.

  536. It's not harmonious.

  537. You're not together.

  538. And it's inconsistent.

  539. And then on the left,

  540. selfless and meek.

  541. Humble.

  542. And on the right,

  543. it's selfish and prideful.

  544. So there's a real distinction

  545. between love and lust.

  546. Between sometimes

  547. what humans strive to love like,

  548. but we fall so far short.

  549. But on the left

  550. is the kind of love

  551. that we receive from God

  552. and the kind of love

  553. that God can shine through us

  554. to someone else.

  555. God can help us love

  556. how he loves.

  557. So it's incredibly important

  558. to understand

  559. that we read

  560. in verse 2 of chapter 5

  561. to walk in love

  562. as Christ loved us.

  563. Now what does it mean

  564. in verse 5

  565. when it says,

  566. know and recognize this,

  567. every sexually immoral

  568. or impure

  569. or greedy person,

  570. and I love that they

  571. combined those impure

  572. and greedy

  573. with the sexual immorality.

  574. because that is greediness.

  575. That is a form of take

  576. for me, right?

  577. So what does it mean

  578. when it says

  579. these kinds of people

  580. will not have an inheritance

  581. in the kingdom of Christ in God?

  582. Does that mean

  583. if you commit sexual sin

  584. that you don't get to go to heaven?

  585. Is that what that means?

  586. Because remember,

  587. this is written

  588. to Christians.

  589. It's written to a church.

  590. It's written to people

  591. who have already said

  592. that they have placed

  593. their faith in God.

  594. So what does it mean?

  595. We all are coming up

  596. empty like I did, okay?

  597. That's good.

  598. I tried to study this out

  599. and I even talked to

  600. some friends

  601. and ministry

  602. and that kind of thing

  603. and finally

  604. what I realized is

  605. I'm skipping over

  606. a key part.

  607. It says,

  608. no one recognized this,

  609. every sexually immoral

  610. or impure

  611. or greedy person

  612. who is an idolater

  613. does not have an inheritance

  614. in the kingdom of Christ in God.

  615. You understand that that part

  616. who is an idolater

  617. is crucial,

  618. essential.

  619. Can't skip over it.

  620. it means that,

  621. what is an idol?

  622. What is an idol?

  623. Anybody?

  624. Substitute for God.

  625. That's a great way to put it.

  626. Something that you have lifted up

  627. or elevated above God.

  628. Now,

  629. you and I will do that

  630. at times in our life.

  631. We will place something else

  632. more important

  633. than God in our lives.

  634. And usually that will lead us

  635. off into somewhere

  636. that we don't need to be.

  637. However,

  638. if you are an idolater,

  639. it means that you have refused

  640. to acknowledge God as God.

  641. And so these people

  642. have elevated their own lust,

  643. their own greed,

  644. themselves above God.

  645. And this seems to be someone

  646. who perpetually does this.

  647. So actually,

  648. he's warning us

  649. that there are people

  650. possibly even in this church

  651. in Ephesus,

  652. and it would be foolish

  653. to think that we don't have

  654. people like this

  655. in our town

  656. or even in our church today

  657. who have not actually

  658. humbled themselves

  659. and made God,

  660. God in their life.

  661. That means they're not saved,

  662. if you will.

  663. They're not Christians.

  664. They haven't truly

  665. repented of their sin

  666. and put their faith

  667. in a Savior.

  668. They are an idolater,

  669. someone who will not

  670. acknowledge God as God.

  671. So,

  672. they've let lust be their God.

  673. They've let sexual immorality

  674. be their God.

  675. They've let obscenity,

  676. foolishness,

  677. impurity, greed

  678. be their God.

  679. So this is a warning.

  680. And then it goes on to say,

  681. walk in light.

  682. Let no one deceive you.

  683. No one like this.

  684. Don't let these people deceive you

  685. with empty arguments

  686. because God's wrath

  687. is coming on the disobedient

  688. because of these things.

  689. Have you ever noticed

  690. that if you talk to someone

  691. who lives for themselves,

  692. they will come up

  693. with all kinds of reasons

  694. why they should?

  695. They'll come up

  696. with all kinds of excuses

  697. why it's okay for them.

  698. Have you ever noticed that?

  699. You can be calling someone

  700. on the carpet

  701. for their obvious,

  702. obvious sin

  703. that is destructive

  704. to them,

  705. to those around them.

  706. And they will just

  707. come back with,

  708. well,

  709. you don't understand

  710. my situation.

  711. You don't understand

  712. what I've been through.

  713. You don't understand

  714. this and this and this.

  715. And yes,

  716. I don't understand,

  717. but Jesus does.

  718. And he still calls you

  719. to walk in the light.

  720. He still can empower you

  721. to resist the devil

  722. and the devil will flee from you.

  723. There is forgiveness.

  724. There is grace.

  725. But in order to experience

  726. the forgiveness

  727. and the grace,

  728. we must turn

  729. from the sin.

  730. We must turn

  731. from the sin.

  732. And if we don't,

  733. we cannot walk

  734. in the light.

  735. Look at verse 8.

  736. Once you were in darkness,

  737. but now you are light

  738. in the Lord.

  739. Live as children

  740. of light,

  741. for the fruit of the light

  742. consists of all goodness,

  743. righteousness,

  744. and truth,

  745. testing what is pleasing

  746. to the Lord.

  747. Don't participate

  748. in the fruitless works

  749. of darkness.

  750. Instead,

  751. expose them.

  752. It's shameful

  753. to even talk about

  754. what's done by them.

  755. Verse 13,

  756. everything exposed

  757. by the light

  758. is visible.

  759. That's what makes

  760. everything visible.

  761. And so get up,

  762. wake up,

  763. and Christ will shine

  764. on you.

  765. Now,

  766. I don't normally quote

  767. Johnny Cash

  768. in my sermons.

  769. However,

  770. this one was on the money,

  771. all right?

  772. As sure as God

  773. made black and white,

  774. what's done in the dark

  775. will be brought

  776. to the light.

  777. Now,

  778. God said it a whole lot

  779. more eloquently

  780. here in Ephesians.

  781. But I think

  782. that that's spot on.

  783. God will shine

  784. in the darkness.

  785. Now,

  786. listen,

  787. that should be

  788. a good thing for you.

  789. That should be

  790. a good thing,

  791. that God sees

  792. the things you do

  793. for Him.

  794. That God always sees

  795. the struggle

  796. that you go through.

  797. That He's there

  798. and that the darkness

  799. can't overwhelm you.

  800. It can't overcome you.

  801. You do get to walk

  802. in God's light

  803. unless you're enjoying

  804. the darkness too much.

  805. Unless you're hiding

  806. in the darkness.

  807. Unless you're sneaking

  808. around doing things

  809. that you know

  810. are not healthy,

  811. that you know

  812. are not good for you

  813. or anyone you love.

  814. But you're putting

  815. yourself first

  816. and you're lifting

  817. yourself above God.

  818. And then,

  819. it's a scary thing

  820. to think that the light

  821. is going to shine

  822. in the darkness.

  823. What's done

  824. in the dark

  825. will be brought

  826. to the light.

  827. So,

  828. let's go to Luke.

  829. Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  830. There's nothing covered

  831. that won't be uncovered.

  832. There's nothing hidden

  833. that won't be made known.

  834. Whatever you have said

  835. in the dark

  836. will be heard

  837. in the light.

  838. What you've whispered

  839. in an ear

  840. in private rooms

  841. will be proclaimed

  842. on the housetops.

  843. Y'all,

  844. you want to see

  845. evidence of that?

  846. Turn on the news.

  847. Right?

  848. We're constantly

  849. hearing of things

  850. whether it's politicians

  851. in Washington

  852. or even pastors

  853. in large churches

  854. and ministries.

  855. People in Hollywood.

  856. People in the business world.

  857. You know,

  858. look at all this stuff

  859. with Epstein

  860. and his island

  861. and the lists

  862. that are coming out

  863. of people

  864. that participated

  865. in the horrific things

  866. that went on there.

  867. Human trafficking,

  868. etc.

  869. Everything eventually

  870. will come to light.

  871. It'll be proclaimed

  872. on the housetops.

  873. John 8, 12.

  874. Jesus said,

  875. I am the light

  876. of the world.

  877. Anyone who follows me,

  878. if you're walking

  879. in his steps,

  880. will never walk

  881. in the darkness.

  882. But you will have the light.

  883. You will have the light.

  884. Doesn't mean you won't

  885. mess up.

  886. It doesn't mean

  887. you won't fall.

  888. It doesn't mean

  889. you won't sin.

  890. But you will not live

  891. in that darkness.

  892. God will shine his light.

  893. And if you follow him,

  894. you will not walk

  895. in darkness.

  896. You will have

  897. the light of life.

  898. Let me hit this briefly.

  899. You understand

  900. there's a distinction.

  901. Jesus says

  902. that we are

  903. the light of the world.

  904. He said,

  905. you were once darkness,

  906. but now you are

  907. the light.

  908. But do you understand

  909. that we are not

  910. the source?

  911. Of the light.

  912. Jesus is the light source.

  913. He is the way.

  914. He is the truth.

  915. He is the light.

  916. And he said,

  917. I am the light of the world.

  918. And then later,

  919. he called you and I

  920. the light of the world.

  921. But our source

  922. is Jesus.

  923. We are shining

  924. that light

  925. into the darkness.

  926. So,

  927. walk in love.

  928. Walk in the light.

  929. And then number three,

  930. walk in wisdom.

  931. Verse 15.

  932. Real quick.

  933. Verse 15.

  934. Pay careful attention

  935. then to how you live.

  936. Not as unwise people,

  937. but as wise.

  938. Making the most of the time.

  939. Because the days are evil.

  940. So don't be foolish,

  941. but understand

  942. what the Lord's will is.

  943. Number one,

  944. embrace wisdom.

  945. Embrace wisdom.

  946. Back in verse 15,

  947. it said,

  948. don't live as unwise people,

  949. but as wise.

  950. Embrace wisdom.

  951. Proverbs 4

  952. elaborates on that.

  953. Wisdom is supreme.

  954. So get wisdom.

  955. Whatever else you get,

  956. get understanding.

  957. You know,

  958. it's super helpful

  959. to compile knowledge,

  960. but unless you,

  961. unless you come to grips with it,

  962. unless it makes sense for you

  963. and you can apply it,

  964. unless you understand

  965. what to do with that knowledge,

  966. then it doesn't do you any good.

  967. Right?

  968. So wisdom is supreme.

  969. Get wisdom

  970. and get the understanding

  971. of what to do with that wisdom.

  972. Number eight,

  973. verse eight,

  974. Proverbs 4,

  975. cherish her

  976. and she will exalt you.

  977. If you embrace her,

  978. she will honor you.

  979. Embrace wisdom.

  980. She will honor you.

  981. You will bring honor to God.

  982. And just like Jesus,

  983. we read a moment ago in Philippians,

  984. he humbled himself,

  985. took on the form of the servant.

  986. And the next verses after that said,

  987. God highly exalted him,

  988. gave him a name,

  989. which is above every name

  990. so that the name of Jesus,

  991. every knee would bow

  992. with things in heaven,

  993. things in earth,

  994. things under the earth,

  995. and every tongue would confess

  996. that Jesus is Lord.

  997. If you humble yourself,

  998. God will exalt you.

  999. You will bring glory to him

1000. and he will then in turn

  1001. give honor to you.

  1002. But you must embrace

  1003. godly wisdom.

  1004. And then adopt fruitfulness.

  1005. Adopt fruitfulness.

1006. Apparently I ran out of

1007. a room on that there

1008. and it just dropped the S down.

1009. But you get it, right?

  1010. Verse 16,

1011. making the most of the time

1012. because the days are evil.

  1013. What does that mean,

1014. making the most of the time?

  1015. It means you're productive.

  1016. It means you understand

1017. that Jesus is coming back.

1018. The day is coming soon

  1019. when Jesus will return.

1020. We don't have tomorrow guaranteed.

  1021. We make plans.

1022. Boy, it's going to be cold.

1023. I got to do this.

1024. Well, the Cowboys are going to play,

1025. so I got to do this.

1026. Well, my parents are coming to town

1027. or my kids are coming to visit,

1028. so I got to do this.

1029. We make all these plans,

  1030. but we don't know

  1031. that tomorrow is guaranteed.

1032. All we have is today.

  1033. All we have guaranteed

1034. is right now, this moment.

1035. So we must keep a sense of urgency

1036. as the children of God

  1037. and adopt fruitfulness.

  1038. Romans chapter 13,

    Romans 13 chapter mention

1039. do this knowing the time

  1040. that now, right now,

  1041. it is high time

1042. to awake out of sleep

1043. for now our salvation is nearer

1044. than when we first believed.

  1045. Our salvation,

1046. that moment when Jesus comes back.

1047. And we get to start our eternity

1048. with God forever in heaven.

  1049. Now it's nearer

1050. than when we first believed.

1051. The night is far spent.

1052. The day is at hand.

  1053. Therefore,

1054. let us cast off those works of,

  1055. what is it?

  1056. The works of what?

  1057. Darkness.

1058. Let's put on the armor of what?

  1059. Light.

  1060. Let us walk properly

  1061. as in the, what?

  1062. Day.

1063. Not in revelry and drunkenness.

1064. Not in lewdness and lust.

1065. Not in strife and envy.

1066. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ

1067. and make no provision for the flesh

  1068. to fulfill its lust.

1069. You see how this ties together?

1070. The darkness versus the light.

  1071. Love versus lust.

1072. The flesh versus the spirit of God.

  1073. And then finally,

  1074. understand God's will.

  1075. Verse 17.

  1076. It said,

1077. don't walk as unwise people.

  1078. Walk as wise.

1079. Make the most of your time.

  1080. And then verse 17.

  1081. Don't be foolish,

  1082. but understand

1083. what the Lord's will is.

1084. We've been hitting this passage

  1085. the last two Sundays.

  1086. And here we are.

1087. We're going to hit it again today.

  1088. Romans 12.

  1089. Verse 2.

  1090. Don't copy the behavior

1091. and the customs of this world,

1092. but let God transform you

  1093. into a new person

1094. by changing the way you think.

1095. Then you'll learn to know

  1096. God's will for you.

1097. That's how you can understand God's will.

1098. It said in Ephesians 5,

  1099. don't be foolish.

1100. Understand what God's will is.

  1101. Well, that's great.

1102. How do I do that?

1103. God is so much bigger than I am.

  1104. I recognize that.

1105. God's so much greater than I am.

1106. How do I understand God

1107. and His will for me?

  1108. Let Him transform you

  1109. by letting Him change

  1110. the way you think.

1111. You feel like you're hitting a wall.

1112. You just can't get past

  1113. whatever it is.

  1114. If it's an addiction,

  1115. if it's a problem,

1116. if it's something that someone else

1117. is messing up for you,

1118. and you just can't get around this wall,

1119. let God change the way you think.

1120. And then He can transform you.

  1121. He can change you.

  1122. Then you'll know

1123. what His will is in that situation.

  1124. Then you'll know

  1125. you'll experience the breakthrough.

1126. Then you'll get to see

  1127. the fruitfulness.

1128. You'll get to see the promises of God.

1129. You'll get to see the blessings.

1130. Because God can change me.

  1131. God can change you.

1132. I call you back to this verse

1133. that we read at the beginning.

1134. You were called to this

1135. because Jesus suffered for us.

  1136. That is our example

1137. that we can walk in His steps.

  1138. Guys, I promise you,

1139. if you get out of those boot prints,

1140. you're liable to get into

  1141. all kinds of treachery.

1142. You're liable to get into

  1143. all kinds of danger.

1144. You're liable to get off the path

1145. that God intended for you

1146. and experience all kinds of things

1147. that He does not want to see

  1148. His children go through.

1149. Whatever God allows you to go through,

1150. He'll get you through that.

  1151. Don't worry about that.

1152. He will get you through that.

  1153. It might be tough.

  1154. It might be difficult.

  1155. It might be taxing.

1156. It might be sad at times.

  1157. But God is enough

1158. to get you through that.

  1159. It's those things

  1160. that we get into

1161. that He never planned for us

1162. when we get out of His footsteps.

1163. That's what messes you and I up.

1164. That's what leaves the scars

1165. that don't seem to heal.

1166. That's what keeps you up at night.

  1167. But I promise you,

1168. when we follow His steps,

  1169. man, we experience joy.

  1170. We experience blessings.

1171. We experience that good life

1172. that He has for us.

1173. Looks a little different sometimes

  1174. than the good life

1175. that we think we deserve.

1176. But it's so much better

1177. than anything that we could

1178. fight and scrape to achieve.

1179. So our point to ponder today,

1180. how often does my path stray

  1181. from following Jesus' footsteps?

1182. How often do I get out of those footsteps?

1183. How often do I wander off

  1184. on my own

  1185. and I wind up

1186. in all kinds of trouble

  1187. that I need God

1188. to get me out of again?

1189. And God in His loving graciousness

  1190. picks us back up,

1191. puts us back on the path

  1192. and says,

1193. walk in my footsteps again.

  1194. Walk where I walked.

  1195. I got you.

1196. We can handle this together.

  1197. If we imitate Jesus,

  1198. we imitate Jesus

1199. when we walk in love,

  1200. light, and wisdom.

  1201. That's the ingredients

  1202. that Paul gave us

1203. in his letter to Ephesus.

  1204. Walk in love.

  1205. Walk in light.

  1206. Walk in wisdom.

1207. We find all of that

1208. in the Word of God.

1209. We find all of that

1210. in the fellowship of believers

  1211. in our church.

1212. We find all of that

1213. by going constantly to God

1214. in prayer throughout the day.

1215. So we walk in love

  1216. and light and wisdom.

1217. And that's how we imitate God.

  1218. Amen?

  1219. Let's pray together.

1220. God, I pray that you would

1221. continue to work on us, Lord.

1222. We're all trying to follow you

1223. and sometimes we get out of line.

  1224. Sometimes we stray

  1225. from your footprints.

1226. But God, draw us back.

1227. Don't let us wander too far.

  1228. Pick us back up.

1229. Put us back on the path

1230. and let us walk forward.

  1231. At this time, church,

1232. we're going to enter into

  1233. a time of Lord's Supper.

1234. I'm going to call our deacons forward

  1235. at this time.

1236. The deacons, if you'll come forward.

  1237. The Lord's Supper

1238. is a very special time

1239. that's reserved just for the church.

1240. And we're not going to take long

  1241. with it this morning,

  1242. but it's important

  1243. that we observe this.

1244. And our church has planned

1245. on doing this every so often.

  1246. The Lord's Supper is a time

1247. when we examine our hearts.

  1248. And so it's important...

  1249. It is important

  1250. to examine our hearts

  1251. at times like this

1252. and ask the kind of question,

  1253. God, have I strayed

  1254. from your steps?

1255. I'm going to ask that together

  1256. as a room,

  1257. we bow our heads

1258. and enter into a time

  1259. of quietness,

  1260. examining our hearts

  1261. and saying,

  1262. God, show me

  1263. where I've strayed

  1264. from your footprints.

  1265. Maybe there's something obvious

1266. that God will bring to mind

1267. that you know you need

  1268. to work on.

1269. You know you need to

  1270. flee from.

1271. God, you know you need to

1272. to be able to do it this morning.

  1273. Regardless,

  1274. this is the moment

  1275. when we stop

  1276. and we think about

  1277. the Lord's death,

  1278. his sacrifice.

1279. That's why Paul reminded us

  1280. there in Ephesians 5

  1281. of the sacrifice

1282. that Jesus made for us.

  1283. So let's stop

  1284. and remember

  1285. his body

  1286. broken on the cross

  1287. for us,

  1288. his blood

  1289. shed

  1290. for the forgiveness

  1291. of our sins.

  1292. We thank him

  1293. for that.

  1294. We praise him

  1295. for that.

  1296. And then together

  1297. as a church,

  1298. we take the bread

  1299. and we drink

  1300. from the cup

  1301. in honor

  1302. and remembrance

  1303. of his body

  1304. and his blood.

  1305. And the Bible says

  1306. let us first

  1307. examine ourselves

  1308. before we do this

  1309. together

  1310. as a church.

  1311. Examine

  1312. that our love

  1313. for him

  1314. is strong.

  1315. That we're not perfect

  1316. but we are truly

  1317. committed

  1318. to following

  1319. in the steps

  1320. of Jesus.

  1321. esta sure

  1322. is

  1323. et

  1324. so

  1325. I

  1326. was

  1327. in

  1328. this

  1329. thought

  1330. was

  1331. as

  1332. I

  1333. I

  1334. ever

  1335. a

  1336. Bye

  1337. I

  1338. be

  1339. ing
