  1. All right, well, good morning.

  2. Thank you, choir.

  3. Would you take your Bibles and turn to Ephesians chapter 6?

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  4. Ephesians chapter 6.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  5. I appreciated our children's minister, Sarah Ferris' example of the power of God

  6. and the difference that that can make in our lives,

  7. and that certainly goes along with our passage today.

  8. Anyway, Ephesians chapter 6, we're concluding, just about concluding our series

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  9. through the book of Ephesians.

  10. And just by way of reminder, you see the resources that were used for much of the study in this series.

  11. The background of the book was written by Paul in AD 62 from Roman imprisonment

  12. to a church with which he was very familiar, having pastored there for three years.

  13. And the breakdown of the book, the first part, first half of the book,

  14. first three chapters, who we are in Christ, second three chapters, how we live for Christ.

  15. So let's stand together if you're able to, and let's read Ephesians chapter 6, beginning in verse 10.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  16. Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength.

  17. Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil.

  18. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities,

  19. against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil spiritual forces in the heavens.

  20. For this reason, take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to resist in the evil day,

  21. and having prepared everything, to take your stand.

  22. Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist,

  23. righteousness like armor on your chest,

  24. and your feet sandaled with the readiness for the gospel of peace.

  25. In every situation, take up the shield of faith by which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

  26. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

  27. Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer request.

  28. And stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.

  29. We're going to focus on verses 10 through 17 today,

  30. and our topic will be,

  31. Are you ready for war?

  32. Are you ready for war?

  33. Let's pray together.

  34. God, I pray that you would speak to us from your word today.

  35. I pray that everything that

  36. you have for us today

  37. would be absorbed by our minds and our hearts,

  38. that we would leave here having heard from you,

  39. and it's in Jesus' name we pray.

  40. Amen.

  41. You may be seated.

  42. Floyd, for some reason, I just lost the power of this.

  43. It doesn't seem to be advancing through the slides anymore.

  44. So I don't know if you can,

  45. Lee, if you can click through,

  46. maybe as I go along.

  47. So this doesn't seem to be connecting anymore.

  48. I apologize for that.

  49. So number one,

  50. in your bulletins today,

  51. in your outlines,

  52. number one,

  53. know your enemy.

  54. There are two things we need to understand

  55. when we are going to war,

  56. and that is our enemy

  57. and our equipment.

  58. Our enemy and our equipment.

  59. It's important to know who the enemy is.

  60. Is it not?

  61. We certainly don't want to shoot anybody

  62. with friendly fire.

  63. And so in verses 10 through 12,

  64. we see here in Ephesians 6,

  65. be strengthened by the Lord and his vast strength.

  66. Put on the full armor of God

  67. so that you can stand against the schemes of who?

  68. The devil.

  69. That's right.

  70. So he is our enemy.

  71. Our struggle is not against flesh and blood,

  72. but against the rulers,

  73. against the authorities,

  74. against the cosmic powers of this darkness.

  75. Against evil.

  76. Against spiritual forces in the heavens.

  77. James.

  78. Okay, that just worked.

  79. We may be connected again.

  80. James 4, 7.

  81. Submit yourselves therefore to God.

  82. Resist the devil,

  83. and he will flee from you.

  84. So this is our enemy.

  85. It is the devil.

  86. And the devil then will flee from us.

  87. Now, Jesus has to remind us

  88. who the enemy is frequently.

  89. John 10, 10.

  90. The thief.

  91. He calls him the thief.

  92. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  93. By contrast,

  94. Jesus came not to steal, kill, and destroy,

  95. but he came to give life

  96. and to give it abundantly.

  97. So we can have life.

  98. And we can have that abundant life

  99. that only Jesus offers.

  100. Luke 19, 10.

  101. The son of man came to seek and to save the lost.

  102. That is the purpose of Jesus coming.

  103. Why are we tying this in?

  104. Because frequently,

  105. you and I can start to see the enemy

  106. as flesh and blood.

  107. You and I can start to see the enemy

  108. as each other.

  109. You and I can start to see the enemy

  110. as the lost outside these walls.

  111. But those are the very lost

  112. that Jesus came to seek and to save.

  113. So they are not and never will be the enemy.

  114. The enemy is very clear.

  115. He is the devil.

  116. He is the thief.

  117. He is the thief of joy.

  118. He's the thief of eternal life

  119. because he tries as hard as he can

  120. to keep people from placing their faith in Christ.

  121. That is his end goal.

  122. That is what this spiritual war

  123. that is waging all around us,

  124. that's what it's about.

  125. Acts 26.

  126. Jesus brings the mission back to us.

  127. He says,

  128. I am sending you to them, the lost,

  129. to open their eyes

  130. that they may turn from darkness to light,

  131. from the power of Satan to God,

  132. that they may receive forgiveness of sins

  133. and a share among those

  134. who are sanctified by faith in me.

  135. Here is the battle.

  136. It's between darkness and light.

  137. Here's the battle.

  138. It's between the power of Satan and God.

  139. And the enemy is darkness.

  140. The enemy is Satan.

  141. And we are warriors in this battle.

  142. We must know who our enemy is.

  143. So as my way of reminder,

  144. our enemy is not those outside the church.

  145. It's easy to look and say,

  146. we are the sanctified ones,

  147. we're the holy ones,

  148. we're the chosen ones,

  149. and it's us against them.

  150. Truth is,

  151. that's a very flawed way of looking at it.

  152. Truth is,

  153. oftentimes you and I

  154. do not at all act like

  155. the sanctified, holy chosen ones.

  156. Often we act just as wicked and lost

  157. as anyone else.

  158. We have to remember,

  159. our enemy is not those outside the church.

  160. And secondly,

  161. our enemy is not those inside the church.

  162. Oftentimes we'll treat one another

  163. inside the church like the enemy.

  164. If you don't like my decision,

  165. or if you don't like

  166. my way of doing things,

  167. or if you don't like

  168. the role that I have

  169. and you wish you had,

  170. whatever it is that can bring up strife

  171. within a church,

  172. believe me,

  173. our church is not exempt.

  174. And we have to continually

  175. remind ourselves

  176. that the enemy

  177. is not inside the church.

  178. It's also not outside the church.

  179. Our enemy is not politicians,

  180. Washington, D.C.,

  181. or the media.

  182. How many of you are happy?

  183. How many of y'all are happy

  184. with the last several administrations

  185. in the White House in America?

  186. How many of y'all would say,

  187. we love the job that we're getting

  188. out of Washington, D.C. these days?

  189. I don't think there's a whole lot of hands

  190. that would go up, right?

  191. But they are not our enemy.

  192. The media,

  193. fake news,

  194. that's still not our enemy.

  195. We don't have to agree

  196. with what we hear.

  197. We can recognize the harm being done

  198. in the political system, etc.,

  199. that comes out of Congress

  200. and comes through our televisions,

  201. through the media.

  202. But we must remember,

  203. as we vote according to how we believe

  204. God wants us to vote,

  205. as we make the decisions

  206. to lead our families

  207. in the way we believe

  208. God wants us to lead them,

  209. we must remember that those

  210. who don't see it like us

  211. and those who we believe

  212. are not living their lives

  213. according to Scripture

  214. or making decisions

  215. or legislating

  216. or reporting according to Scripture,

  217. they are not the enemy.

  218. They are deceived by the enemy.

  219. They are swayed by the enemy.

  220. Oftentimes.

  221. But they are not the enemy.

  222. They are the ones

  223. that Jesus came to save.

  224. Our enemy is not people.

  225. It's not politics.

  226. It's not problems.

  227. It's not pressures.

  228. It's not the liberals in Hollywood.

  229. This is not our enemy.

  230. Our enemy

  231. is the spiritual darkness

  232. of lostness.

  233. It's lostness.

  234. Being lost without Christ.

  235. That is our enemy.

  236. It's embodied by Satan

  237. and all his forces.

  238. It's a spiritual battle we are in.

  239. It is not a battle against people.

  240. That's why we can still pray for the president

  241. whether we like what he's doing or not.

  242. That's why we can still pray

  243. for the lost people in our community

  244. who don't live like Jesus

  245. and oftentimes oppose

  246. what we want

  247. to do for God in this community.

  248. However,

  249. we can still pray for them.

  250. We can still love them.

  251. We can still show grace

  252. and the love of God to them

  253. because they are not the enemy.

  254. The enemy is lostness.

  255. And the eternal fight,

  256. the eternal struggle

  257. will be God against lostness.

  258. Will be God against the dark.

  259. Will be God against Satan.

  260. And I don't know about you

  261. but I don't want to be on team lostness.

  262. I want to be on team Jesus.

  263. So know your enemy.

  264. Number two,

  265. know your equipment.

  266. Know your equipment.

  267. Here's the famed

  268. armor of God passage

  269. that we've been looking forward to

  270. ever since we started Ephesians.

  271. One of the most familiar

  272. in the Bible

  273. if you've been studying the Bible

  274. for any length of time.

  275. So, number one,

  276. the belt.

  277. The belt.

  278. Let's look back at the scriptures.

  279. For this reason,

  280. take up the full armor of God

  281. so that you may be able

  282. to resist in the evil day

  283. and having prepared everything

  284. to take your stand.

  285. Prepared everything.

  286. What are we talking about?

  287. We're talking about

  288. putting on this armor of God

  289. and we begin with the belt.

  290. Verse 14.

  291. Stand therefore with truth

  292. like a belt around your waist.

  293. The Roman soldier's belt

  294. supported his sword,

  295. supported his breastplate,

  296. and provided these protective plates

  297. that hung in front of him.

  298. So, the Roman soldier's belt

  299. was absolutely crucial

  300. to the rest of his armor.

  301. Even though it was one of the

  302. smaller pieces of armor he wore,

  303. everything else hinged on that.

  304. If that belt failed,

  305. his sword would fall.

  306. If that belt failed,

  307. his breastplate would fail.

  308. So much else hinged on this belt.

  309. So, the point for us today,

  310. Satan wants to tear down

  311. the core truth

  312. that holds everything else up.

  313. He wants to tear down

  314. that belt of truth.

  315. What truth are we talking about?

  316. The number one truth

  317. that holds everything else together

  318. that God loves us.

  319. If God did not love us,

  320. then he would just be

  321. a tyrant in the sky.

  322. But he loves us.

  323. The Bible has been called

  324. God's love letter to mankind.

  325. The overarching theme

  326. from the Old Testament

  327. to the New Testament,

  328. from creation

  329. all the way to Revelation,

  330. is that God loves us.

  331. The most famous verse in the Bible,

  332. John 3, 16,

  333. for God so loved the world

  334. that he gave his only begotten son.

  335. He loves us.

  336. That is the truth

  337. that holds everything else together.

  338. So, the belt of truth

  339. is absolutely crucial.

  340. Secondly, the breastplate.

  341. The Roman soldier's breastplate

  342. protected his vital organs.

  343. His breastplate protected

  344. his vital organs.

  345. Obviously, the most vital,

  346. the heart, right?

  347. But so many other vital organs

  348. around that stomach and chest area,

  349. the breastplate would protect.

  350. The Roman soldier depended

  351. crucially on it.

  352. When you're in hand-to-hand combat,

  353. fighting with the enemy

  354. as they did in those ancient times,

  355. they wouldn't stand back

  356. behind their lines

  357. and shoot at one another.

  358. Obviously, with swords and spears,

  359. they would march forward

  360. and intermingle,

  361. fighting hand-to-hand

  362. with one another.

  363. So, the breastplate

  364. was absolutely crucial.

  365. And for us,

  366. for the Christian,

  367. for the believer,

  368. our spiritual heart

  369. is protected

  370. by the righteousness

  371. we have received

  372. by faith in Jesus.

  373. The breastplate

  374. is righteousness.

  375. So, number one,

  376. the belt of truth.

  377. We must remember

  378. that God loves us.

  379. He is the way.

  380. He is the truth.

  381. He is the life.

  382. But number two,

  383. we must remember

  384. our righteousness

  385. comes by faith in Jesus.

  386. Our righteousness

  387. does not come

  388. through anything

  389. that we can do

  390. or achieve ourselves.

  391. Ephesians 2

  392. says it is not

  393. by works of righteousness.

  394. I'm sorry,

  395. that there are no

  396. works of righteousness

  397. that we can do

  398. to achieve any grace

  399. from God.

  400. There is no works

  401. of righteousness

  402. that we can do,

  403. but it is only

  404. by God's mercy

  405. that He saves us.

  406. The Bible actually says

  407. God calls

  408. all of our righteousnesses

  409. filthy rags.

  410. He uses that plural.

  411. All our righteousnesses,

  412. all our righteous efforts,

  413. all our righteous deeds,

  414. all our best

  415. that we can offer,

  416. God looks at it

  417. and says,

  418. no,

  419. not good enough.

  420. But when you

  421. clothe yourself

  422. with His righteousness,

  423. with the righteousness

  424. that comes

  425. by faith in Jesus,

  426. then God can declare you

  427. to be righteousness.

  428. It's this doctrine

  429. of imputation

  430. or God placing over you

  431. His righteousness.

  432. righteousness,

  433. nothing that you

  434. can achieve

  435. on your own.

  436. But our spiritual heart

  437. is protected

  438. by the righteousness

  439. we have received

  440. by faith in Jesus.

  441. Otherwise,

  442. you have no armor.

  443. You have no breastplate.

  444. You can try

  445. to look the part.

  446. You can try

  447. to dress up

  448. like a Christian soldier,

  449. but you're missing

  450. the breastplate.

  451. And the first time

  452. the enemy comes at you,

  453. you'll crumble.

  454. There's no protection.

  455. So have you placed

  456. your faith in Jesus?

  457. Do you have

  458. that breastplate

  459. of righteousness

  460. that His faith provides?

  461. Thirdly,

  462. the boots.

  463. The boots.

  464. I like to call this

  465. the gospel boots.

  466. The gospel boots

  467. of readiness.

  468. The gospel boots

  469. of readiness.

  470. What are we talking about?

  471. The Roman soldier's footwear.

  472. His boots

  473. kept him

  474. ready

  475. for warfare.

  476. I'm probably

  477. going to mispronounce this,

  478. but they were called

  479. the caligulae.

  480. Something along those lines.

  481. If anybody knows Latin well,

  482. you can correct me on that,

  483. but

  484. it was pretty close to that.

  485. And you can see

  486. a little picture there.

  487. These boots

  488. were unusual

  489. for their day,

  490. and they were unusual

  491. throughout the history

  492. of warfare, really,

  493. but they proved

  494. incredibly effective.

  495. So you can see

  496. they were made of leather,

  497. and on the bottom

  498. they had this hard,

  499. hard sole.

  500. And the Roman army

  501. would provide these boots

  502. for their soldiers,

  503. but then the soldiers

  504. were on their own

  505. to go have these nails

  506. put in the bottom.

  507. They would have

  508. these metal studs

  509. or nails hammered

  510. through the bottom

  511. of their shoes.

  512. The bottom layer,

  513. that provided grip

  514. and traction

  515. when they were going

  516. over uncertain ground,

  517. but then additionally,

  518. when they were fighting

  519. a battle,

  520. sounds a little gruesome,

  521. but they would use

  522. the bottom of those

  523. metal studs

  524. to stomp on their enemies.

  525. Now,

  526. the interesting thing

  527. about this footwear

  528. is they would be able

  529. to walk for miles

  530. and miles and miles,

  531. and their feet

  532. would be sore and hurt,

  533. but they would have

  534. no blisters.

  535. So what's the difference there?

  536. Sore,

  537. soreness and hurt,

  538. that's a temporary condition

  539. that will pass, right?

  540. Go stick their feet

  541. in the nearest water

  542. and let that soreness

  543. ebb away.

  544. But a blister,

  545. that's going to become

  546. a problem.

  547. That's a long-term

  548. medical problem

  549. that then needs

  550. to be dealt with.

  551. So these shoes

  552. were constructed

  553. not for comfort,

  554. but for durability

  555. and for protection

  556. of their feet.

  557. Because at any moment

  558. on that 20, 30, 40,

  559. 50 mile journey,

  560. they might have to stop

  561. and fight.

  562. So they had to be ready

  563. at a moment's notice

  564. to fight.

  565. And that's why

  566. Paul admonishes us

  567. here in Ephesians 6.

  568. Your belt around your waist,

  569. your belt of truth,

  570. your righteousness

  571. like armor on your chest.

  572. And then verse 15,

  573. your feet sandaled

  574. or shod,

  575. your Bible might say,

  576. with readiness

  577. for the gospel of peace.

  578. At any moment,

  579. you and I

  580. might be called upon

  581. to share the gospel

  582. with someone else.

  583. And we must have

  584. intimate knowledge

  585. of the message

  586. of truth,

  587. of salvation,

  588. that gospel message,

  589. so that we are ready.

  590. The Bible says,

  591. always be ready

  592. to give an answer

  593. for the reason

  594. for that faith

  595. that lies within you.

  596. Always be ready.

  597. So the gospel

  598. is both our motivation

  599. to not grow weary

  600. and our message

  601. that can break

  602. hard hearts.

  603. See how we tied

  604. in those studs?

  605. That's a terrifying thought

  606. in hand-to-hand combat,

  607. having those metal studs

  608. on the bottom

  609. of the shoes.

  610. But the truth is,

  611. the gospel message

  612. of Jesus,

  613. that can break

  614. the hardest hearts.

  615. I've seen it happen.

  616. You might have

  617. seen it happen

  618. when someone

  619. who for years,

  620. for their whole lifetime,

  621. said,

  622. I don't believe

  623. in that Jesus stuff.

  624. I'm not a religious person.

  625. I've got no interest.

  626. And then something

  627. happened in their life

  628. and God got their attention.

  629. Boy, we saw it happen

  630. to the Apostle Paul,

  631. didn't we?

  632. He was an enemy

  633. of the church.

  634. He killed Christians.

  635. I dare say

  636. that none of the family members

  637. that you have

  638. that have no interest

  639. in God or church,

  640. I dare say none of them

  641. have been out

  642. making it their daily business

  643. to go out

  644. and kill Christians,

  645. have they?

  646. And yet we saw

  647. that exact thing

  648. happen with God

  649. and His attention

  650. that He got from Paul.

  651. He shook him.

  652. On the road to Damascus,

  653. He appeared

  654. before Paul

  655. in a vision

  656. and He got His attention

  657. and He spoke to him

  658. and He changed

  659. the entire trajectory

  660. of Paul's life.

  661. So the gospel message

  662. can break hard hearts.

  663. And the gospel

  664. is our motivation

  665. to not grow weary.

  666. Though we walk

  667. many miles

  668. of this life,

  669. of this journey

  670. with Jesus,

  671. though time and time again

  672. it seems like

  673. Satan doesn't just,

  674. he won't let up.

  675. our feet

  676. sandaled with

  677. the gospel of peace

  678. can be that motivation

  679. to say,

  680. I'm going to take

  681. another step

  682. in Jesus' name.

  683. I know that the gospel

  684. is enough.

  685. I know it's what I need

  686. to take another step.

  687. I know it's

  688. the truth

  689. that my sister

  690. or my brother

  691. or my parents

  692. or my kids

  693. or my friends

  694. or my co-workers,

  695. I know it's what they need.

  696. So I'm not going to grow weary

  697. in well-doing

  698. because I know

  699. that when the time

  700. is right

  701. in due season,

  702. I will weep,

  703. reap,

  704. I will reap

  705. if I don't give up.

  706. The gospel boots

  707. of readiness

  708. to share

  709. the message of Jesus.

  710. And then the shield.

  711. Then the shield.

  712. Verse 16,

  713. In every situation,

  714. take up

  715. the shield

  716. of faith

  717. with which

  718. you can extinguish

  719. all the flaming arrows

  720. of the evil one.

  721. Isn't it that

  722. interesting

  723. that this passage

  724. mentioned

  725. flaming arrows?

  726. Why do you think

  727. that is?

  728. We got any students

  729. of history out there

  730. that have an idea?

  731. Why flaming arrows?

  732. Well,

  733. the Roman soldier's shield

  734. was for personal protection

  735. but also for group protection.

  736. What are we talking about?

  737. Look at this picture.

  738. You see all these shields together?

  739. The Roman soldiers,

  740. their legions,

  741. would join together

  742. when they were advancing

  743. on a city

  744. or an enemy battalion

  745. and they would group

  746. their shields together

  747. like you can see

  748. in front

  749. and on the sides

  750. and even on top.

  751. So the guys in the middle

  752. would hold their shields up.

  753. Why?

  754. Because from the castle

  755. in front of them

  756. they would be shooting

  757. flaming arrows

  758. at them.

  759. So those shields,

  760. those large,

  761. long shields,

  762. almost the full body height

  763. of a Roman soldier

  764. and they would

  765. carry them this way,

  766. they would then

  767. form

  768. this protective shell

  769. around the Roman soldier

  770. and his brothers.

  771. So you see

  772. where we're going

  773. with this?

  774. This was actually

  775. called a tortuga,

  776. basically a tortoise shell.

  777. Our common faith

  778. is what binds us together

  779. for protection

  780. from the evil one

  781. and for the advance

  782. of the gospel.

  783. our common faith

  784. is what actually

  785. provides us

  786. this protection.

  787. Now if one Roman soldier

  788. would break off

  789. and try to advance

  790. on his own,

  791. then he was exposed.

  792. He was vulnerable

  793. to attack

  794. from the enemy.

  795. Brothers and sisters,

  796. can I remind you

  797. that if one of you

  798. breaks off

  799. from the body

  800. of Christ

  801. and tries to live

  802. this life

  803. on your own,

  804. you are vulnerable

  805. to attack

  806. from the enemy.

  807. Far more vulnerable

  808. than if you stay

  809. in the fellowship

  810. of the believers.

  811. God commanded

  812. that for us.

  813. He designed us

  814. that way

  815. to need each other

  816. in this Christian

  817. community

  818. of faith

  819. and fellowship

  820. and it is our

  821. common faith

  822. that unites

  823. us together.

  824. Jude

  825. in verse 3,

  826. would you turn

  827. very quickly

  828. to the book

  829. right before Revelation,

  830. second to last book

  831. in the Bible.

  832. Look at Jude,

  833. only one chapter.

  834. Look at verse 3.

  835. Dear friends,

  836. although I was eager

  837. to write to you

  838. about the salvation

  839. we share,

  840. I found it necessary

  841. to write appealing

  842. to you

  843. to contend

  844. for the faith

  845. that was delivered

  846. to the saints

  847. once and for all.

  848. To all saints,

  849. this faith,

  850. this common faith,

  851. was delivered

  852. to us

  853. and he says,

  854. he reminds us,

  855. we share

  856. a common salvation.

  857. We share

  858. a common salvation.

  859. Philippians 1.

  860. Next book over

  861. from Ephesians.

  862. Probably from Ephesians 6,

  863. you can just turn

  864. the page.

  865. Philippians 1

  866. in verse 27.

  867. Just one thing,

  868. as citizens of heaven,

  869. live your life

  870. worthy of the gospel

  871. of Christ.

  872. Then,

  873. whether I come

  874. and see you

  875. or am absent,

  876. I will hear about you

  877. that you are standing firm.

  878. Here we go.

  879. In one spirit,

  880. in one accord,

  881. contending together

  882. for the faith

  883. of the gospel,

  884. not being frightened

  885. in any way

  886. by your opponents.

  887. Boy,

  888. that sounds like

  889. a Roman soldier,

  890. a legionnaire,

  891. joined together

  892. with his brothers

  893. in arms,

  894. advancing,

  895. protected by his faith

  896. from the front,

  897. from the top,

  898. from the sides.

  899. You know,

  900. the only spot

  901. that they weren't protected

  902. was from behind.

  903. Why?

  904. Because there was

  905. no retreat.

  906. There was never

  907. any plan

  908. for retreat.

  909. They were always

  910. advancing.

  911. When you and I

  912. break away

  913. from the family

  914. of faith

  915. and you quit

  916. going to church

  917. and you quit

  918. your class

  919. and you quit

  920. fellowshipping

  921. with your fellow

  922. brothers and sisters

  923. in Christ,

  924. then you are vulnerable.

  925. You are unprotected

  926. by that body

  927. of believers

  928. that God designed

  929. for you

  930. to be a part of

  931. and designed you

  932. to be a part of.

  933. We rely

  934. on each other.

  935. We need

  936. each other.

  937. It's what

  938. binds us together

  939. for protection

  940. from Satan

  941. and

  942. for the advance

  943. of the gospel.

  944. This is Southern

  945. Baptist Church.

  946. We're part of

  947. Texas Baptist.

  948. We're part of our

  949. local Wichita

  950. Archer Clay

  951. Association.

  952. Christian,

  953. we have this idea,

  954. we believe it,

  955. we ascribe to it

  956. that we are

  957. better together.

  958. Let's say it

  959. together.

  960. Ready?

  961. Better together.

  962. That's right.

  963. We do believe

  964. that we are

  965. better together.

  966. So what does

  967. that mean?

  968. That means

  969. that joining

  970. our forces,

  971. our resources

  972. together,

  973. we can accomplish

  974. so much more

  975. for God

  976. than we could

  977. all by ourselves.

  978. One church

  979. all by itself

  980. can do great

  981. things for God.

  982. But if churches

  983. get together,

  984. if they unite

  985. in one accord

  986. and doctrine

  987. and say this is

  988. what we believe

  989. about the Bible

  990. and this is

  991. what we believe

  992. about the message

  993. of Jesus Christ

  994. and that message

  995. is what we are

  996. going to take.

  997. And even though

  998. we disagree

  999. about other things,

  1000. we're not going

  1001. to let that

  1002. divide us

  1003. from the greater

  1004. good,

  1005. the greater message

  1006. of sharing Jesus

  1007. with the nations.

  1008. So that is why

  1009. our church

  1010. and that is why

  1011. individually

  1012. we decide

  1013. to not live

  1014. this life

  1015. on our own,

  1016. to not live

  1017. this life

  1018. as a maverick

  1019. just going out

  1020. by ourselves

  1021. and trying to

  1022. accomplish

  1023. whatever we can.

  1024. We need each other.

1025. We rely on each other

  1026. and then nothing

  1027. can stop us.

  1028. Nothing can stop

  1029. the advance

  1030. of the gospel

  1031. when God's people

  1032. get together

  1033. united

  1034. by our common

  1035. salvation,

  1036. by our common

  1037. faith,

  1038. striving together

  1039. with one faith,

  1040. with one accord

  1041. for the gospel.

  1042. and then the helmet.

  1043. Let's look back

  1044. at Ephesians 6.

  1045. Take the helmet

  1046. of salvation.

  1047. The Roman soldier's

  1048. helmet provided

  1049. full protection.

  1050. You see,

  1051. in the front,

  1052. in the back,

  1053. they had this

  1054. extra back plate

  1055. so nobody could

  1056. come up behind them

  1057. while that

  1058. hand-to-hand

  1059. fighting was happening.

  1060. It would protect

  1061. their neck

  1062. all the way down

  1063. to their breastplate.

  1064. Not only did it

  1065. provide protection,

  1066. it also provided

  1067. identification.

  1068. There were many

  1069. different types

  1070. of these red plumes,

  1071. these red feathers

  1072. that would come

  1073. out of their hats,

  1074. their helmets.

  1075. But that was

  1076. the sight

  1077. that made

  1078. the enemies

  1079. of Rome

  1080. made their blood

  1081. run cold,

  1082. struck fear

  1083. in their hearts,

  1084. seeing those

  1085. gleaming metal

  1086. helmets

  1087. with the red

  1088. feathers advancing

  1089. toward them.

  1090. No army was feared

  1091. like the Roman army.

  1092. And those feathers

  1093. were there

  1094. to provide

  1095. identification,

  1096. I am a Roman soldier,

  1097. I am a Roman legionnaire.

  1098. Friends,

  1099. God's gift

  1100. of salvation,

  1101. His free gift,

  1102. it identifies us

  1103. as His children

  1104. and it secures us

  1105. from the enemy.

  1106. That is what

  1107. the helmet of salvation

  1108. does for you

  1109. and for me.

  1110. When God

  1111. sealed us,

  1112. He provided us

  1113. with eternal

  1114. assurance

  1115. that no one,

  1116. as Romans 8

  1117. reminds us,

  1118. can ever pluck us

1119. out of the Father's hand.

1120. No one can harm us

  1121. once we are

  1122. signed,

  1123. sealed,

  1124. and someday

  1125. will be delivered.

  1126. on this earth,

  1127. the Bible says

  1128. you will have

  1129. tribulation.

  1130. But then Jesus

  1131. said,

  1132. fear not

  1133. because I

  1134. have overcome

  1135. this earth,

  1136. I have overcome

  1137. the world.

  1138. So you walk

  1139. as a child

  1140. of the King.

  1141. You walk

  1142. not only

  1143. as a child

  1144. of the King,

  1145. but as a soldier

  1146. of Christ.

  1147. You walk

  1148. surrounded

  1149. by His armor

  1150. and that helmet

  1151. of salvation

  1152. protects your head.

  1153. It protects

  1154. anything

  1155. that Satan

  1156. can throw at you.

  1157. And it identifies

  1158. you.

  1159. I am

  1160. a child

  1161. of the King.

  1162. There's a song

  1163. that says,

  1164. I am

  1165. who you

  1166. say I am.

  1167. Everybody

  1168. has their opinions

  1169. on you,

  1170. don't they?

  1171. We have our opinions

  1172. of ourselves,

  1173. don't we?

  1174. Sometimes we're

  1175. high on ourselves,

  1176. sometimes we're

  1177. kind of low

  1178. on ourselves,

  1179. aren't we?

  1180. Sometimes there

  1181. might be dark

  1182. days or nights

  1183. when we look

  1184. in the mirror

  1185. and say,

  1186. man,

  1187. how could you

  1188. be such an idiot?

  1189. What were you

  1190. thinking?

  1191. Why won't you

  1192. ever change?

  1193. We can be

  1194. our own worst

  1195. enemy.

  1196. We can beat

  1197. ourselves up

  1198. mercilessly.

  1199. And others

  1200. are certainly

  1201. good at that

  1202. too.

  1203. But despite

  1204. all that,

  1205. our identity

  1206. should not come

  1207. from our own

  1208. mind.

  1209. Our identity

  1210. should not come

  1211. from the lips

  1212. of others.

  1213. Our identity

  1214. should only

  1215. come from

  1216. the King

  1217. of Kings

  1218. who bought

  1219. us,

  1220. who saved

  1221. us,

  1222. who is our

  1223. master,

  1224. and he says,

  1225. you are my

  1226. child.

  1227. You are valued.

  1228. You are an

  1229. heir to my

  1230. throne.

  1231. God says,

  1232. you

  1233. are mine.

  1234. You belong

  1235. to me.

  1236. just like

  1237. Rome

  1238. practically

  1239. owned

  1240. those

  1241. soldiers.

  1242. God

  1243. owns us,

  1244. but it's

  1245. such a

  1246. wonderful,

  1247. joyous

  1248. relationship

  1249. when he

  1250. is our

  1251. master.

  1252. So it

  1253. identifies us

  1254. as his

  1255. children,

  1256. and it

  1257. secures us

  1258. from the

  1259. enemy.

  1260. And then

  1261. finally,

  1262. we have

  1263. the sword.

  1264. Verse 17,

  1265. take the

  1266. sword of

  1267. the spirit,

  1268. which is

  1269. the word

  1270. of God.

  1271. The Roman

  1272. sword,

  1273. it was a

  1274. small sword.

  1275. They used

  1276. to use the

  1277. broad swords,

  1278. and pretty

  1279. quickly,

  1280. the broad

  1281. swords were

  1282. those huge

  1283. long swords

  1284. that you

  1285. would see

  1286. back in

  1287. the old

  1288. King Arthur

  1289. days,

  1290. etc.

  1291. But pretty

  1292. quickly,

  1293. they went

  1294. away from

  1295. those,

  1296. and as

  1297. the legionnaires

  1298. would advance

  1299. and take

  1300. over countries

  1301. and their

  1302. empire would

  1303. grow and

  1304. grow,

  1305. it became

  1306. very apparent

  1307. quickly on

  1308. that they

  1309. needed a

  1310. small,

  1311. agile,

  1312. fierce weapon,

  1313. and so the

  1314. gladius was

  1315. born.

  1316. It was

  1317. double-edged,

  1318. and it was

  1319. easy to wield

  1320. in combat.

  1321. What are we

  1322. saying with

  1323. that?

  1324. Our Bible

  1325. is the

  1326. living word

  1327. of God.

  1328. Would you

  1329. go with me

  1330. to Hebrews?

  1331. Hebrews?

  1332. The book

  1333. of Hebrews,

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  1334. chapter 4

  1335. and verse

  1336. 12.

  1337. The word

  1338. of God

  1339. is living

  1340. and effective

  1341. and sharper

  1342. than any

  1343. double-edged

  1344. sword,

  1345. sharper than

  1346. any gladius,

  1347. penetrating as

  1348. far as the

  1349. separation of

  1350. soul and

  1351. spirit,

  1352. the joints

  1353. and marrow.

  1354. It is able

  1355. to judge or

  1356. discern the

  1357. thoughts and

  1358. intentions of

  1359. the heart.

  1360. God's word

  1361. is our

  1362. gladius.

  1363. It is our

  1364. double-edged

  1365. sword.

  1366. Nothing can

  1367. stand before

  1368. it.

  1369. Nothing can

  1370. stand against

  1371. it.

  1372. You might

  1373. have someone

  1374. resist and

  1375. resist and

  1376. resist,

  1377. but God's

  1378. word will

  1379. win.

  1380. The spirit

  1381. of God

  1382. is alive

  1383. and well

  1384. and present

  1385. with us

  1386. in,

  1387. within us.

  1388. The Bible

  1389. says for those

  1390. who place

  1391. their faith

  1392. in Christ,

  1393. we are

  1394. indwelt by

  1395. the Holy

  1396. Spirit of

  1397. God,

  1398. but also

  1399. he is

  1400. present in

  1401. the living

  1402. word of

  1403. God.

  1404. We believe

  1405. that this

  1406. book is

  1407. alive.

  1408. It is not

  1409. just paper

  1410. and ink

  1411. with a pretty

  1412. binding.

  1413. God's

  1414. word of

  1415. God.

  1416. It can

  1417. puncture

  1418. us,

  1419. it can

  1420. reveal to

  1421. us the

  1422. truth about

  1423. ourselves,

  1424. and it can

  1425. do the

  1426. same to

  1427. those.

  1428. So we

  1429. must learn

  1430. to wield

  1431. God's word

  1432. skillfully,

  1433. just like a

  1434. Roman with

  1435. his gladius.

  1436. Our Bible

  1437. is our

  1438. weapon.

  1439. But let's

  1440. not use the

  1441. Bible as a

  1442. weapon to

  1443. hurt.

  1444. Let's not

  1445. use it as

  1446. a weapon to

  1447. harm,

  1448. because that

  1449. was never

  1450. God's

  1451. intention,

  1452. was it?

  1453. There are

  1454. ways that we

  1455. can take

  1456. individual

  1457. verses out of

  1458. Scripture,

  1459. and we can

  1460. try to use

  1461. scriptural

  1462. principles to

  1463. attack others,

  1464. to make them

  1465. feel worse

  1466. about themselves,

  1467. to try to

  1468. hurt, to

  1469. harm, to

  1470. undermine, and

  1471. that is not

  1472. what God

  1473. intended.

  1474. God intended

  1475. to reveal to

  1476. us our own

  1477. sin nature,

  1478. the truth about

  1479. our own sin,

  1480. but then to

  1481. offer us

  1482. hope, to

  1483. show us that

  1484. He loves us,

  1485. to show us

  1486. that He

  1487. cares.

  1488. So that's

  1489. why we must

  1490. learn to

  1491. wield it

  1492. skillfully.

  1493. Some of the

  1494. most knowledgeable

  1495. Bible scholars

  1496. have done some

  1497. of the most

  1498. damage in the

  1499. name of Jesus.

  1500. Hurt more

  1501. people than

  1502. those who

  1503. don't know a

  1504. tenth about

  1505. Bible.

  1506. about the

  1507. Bible as

  1508. those wise,

  1509. learned men,

  1510. who aren't

  1511. living wisely,

  1512. who aren't

  1513. living with

  1514. the wisdom

  1515. that comes

  1516. from God.

  1517. So just

  1518. because you

  1519. know a lot

  1520. about the

  1521. Bible doesn't

  1522. mean that you've

  1523. learned to

  1524. wield it skillfully

  1525. as God

  1526. intended.

  1527. So, by way

  1528. of conclusion,

  1529. I want to share

  1530. this quote with

  1531. you.

  1532. God, we

  1533. just got done

  1534. talking about

  1535. the armor of

  1536. God, didn't

  1537. we?

  1538. We went

  1539. through every

  1540. piece listed

  1541. here in Ephesians

  1542. 6.

  1543. It was an

  1544. outstanding summary

  1545. from Paul.

  1546. After giving us

  1547. all this

  1548. instruction,

  1549. here's who you

  1550. are in Christ,

  1551. here's how you

  1552. should live in

  1553. Christ.

  1554. Now, here's how

  1555. you equip yourself

  1556. for the battle.

  1557. Here's who the

  1558. enemy is, and

  1559. here's how to

  1560. win the battle

  1561. that God's

  1562. already won.

  1563. But I want to

  1564. share this quote

  1565. with you.

  1566. We must not

  1567. confide in the

  1568. armor of God,

  1569. but in the God

  1570. of this armor,

  1571. because all our

  1572. weapons are only

  1573. mighty through

  1574. God.

  1575. That was said

  1576. by William

  1577. Gurnall, wrote

  1578. one of the

  1579. greatest books

  1580. called The

  1581. Christian in

  1582. Complete Armor,

  1583. one of the

  1584. greatest books

  1585. on this topic

  1586. that's ever

  1587. been written.

  1588. How many of

  1589. you all have

  1590. ever heard the

  1591. name Charles

  1592. Spurgeon?

  1593. Anybody?

  1594. Yeah, if you've

  1595. been around

  1596. church for a

  1597. while, he was

  1598. a great pastor

  1599. in England,

  1600. wrote a lot of

  1601. books.

  1602. They called him

  1603. the Prince of

  1604. Preachers.

  1605. Very, very

  1606. famous, and

  1607. well, well

  1608. used by God.

  1609. Charles Spurgeon

  1610. said, the man

  1611. who said this

  1612. quote, wrote

  1613. this book,

  1614. The Christian

  1615. in Complete

  1616. Armor, he

  1617. said that that

  1618. was the most

  1619. thought-provoking

  1620. book in his

  1621. library.

  1622. So if Spurgeon

  1623. says something

  1624. like that, I

  1625. want to sit up

  1626. and take notice.

  1627. And I took

  1628. that, I

  1629. actually found

  1630. that book

  1631. online this

  1632. past week and

  1633. read quite a

  1634. bit of it in

  1635. preparation for

  1636. this sermon.

  1637. And I took

  1638. this quote out

  1639. and wanted to

  1640. share it with

  1641. you today.

  1642. it is easy to

  1643. find bits and

  1644. pieces of

  1645. scripture and

  1646. make that bigger

  1647. than God in

  1648. our minds.

  1649. Sometimes we

  1650. can take

  1651. something that's

  1652. not God and

  1653. elevate it to

  1654. the place of

  1655. God.

  1656. We do that

  1657. with our family

  1658. sometimes.

  1659. We do that

  1660. with our careers.

  1661. Do that with

  1662. our love of

  1663. money or

  1664. success or

  1665. comfort.

  1666. But I'm

  1667. telling you it's

  1668. also possible

  1669. to depend so

  1670. much on

  1671. something that's

  1672. not God that

  1673. it begins to

  1674. take the place

  1675. of God in

  1676. your life.

  1677. And these

  1678. very weapons,

  1679. this very

  1680. armor that is

  1681. supposed to

  1682. protect us,

  1683. they're only

  1684. mighty, they're

  1685. only empowered

  1686. when God is

  1687. behind it all.

  1688. When our

  1689. focus is on

  1690. him and not

  1691. so much these

  1692. weapons or

  1693. this armor.

  1694. We must not

  1695. confide in or

  1696. place all of our

  1697. trust in this

  1698. armor.

  1699. What are we

  1700. saying?

  1701. Look at

  1702. Romans 13.

  1703. Romans 13,

  1704. it's on the

  1705. screen.

  1706. Let us

  1707. discard the

  1708. deeds of

  1709. darkness and

  1710. put on the

  1711. armor of

  1712. light.

  1713. That's great.

  1714. That's the

  1715. armor we're

  1716. talking about.

  1717. Let us walk

  1718. with decency

  1719. as in the

  1720. daytime, not

  1721. in carousing

  1722. and drunkenness,

  1723. not in sexual

  1724. impurity and

  1725. promiscuity, not

  1726. in quarreling and

  1727. jealousy, but here

  1728. we go, verse 14,

  1729. put on the

  1730. Lord Jesus

  1731. Christ.

  1732. That is the

  1733. overarching command

  1734. here.

  1735. That is what

  1736. putting on the

  1737. armor of God is

  1738. all about, putting

  1739. on Jesus and

  1740. make no provision

  1741. for the flesh to

  1742. gratify its

  1743. desires.

  1744. So the takeaway

  1745. for this morning,

  1746. we prepare for

  1747. war by putting

  1748. on Jesus.

  1749. Say, man, that's

  1750. quite a checklist

  1751. that I have to

  1752. run through.

  1753. I've got to do

  1754. the belt and I've

  1755. got to do the

  1756. breastplate and I've

  1757. got to do the

  1758. shield and the

  1759. helmet and the

  1760. shoes and the

  1761. sword and all

  1762. these things.

  1763. You've got to put

  1764. on Jesus.

  1765. Every day, put on

  1766. Jesus.

  1767. This breakdown in

  1768. Ephesians 6 shows

  1769. what that looks

  1770. like.

  1771. You can do an

  1772. inventory.

  1773. Have I put on

  1774. Jesus?

  1775. Well, am I putting

  1776. my faith in him?

  1777. Am I reminding

  1778. myself of the

  1779. truth that God

  1780. loves me?

  1781. Have I picked up

  1782. the word of God

  1783. and used it today?

  1784. There are many

  1785. ways to discern

  1786. whether or not we

  1787. have put on

  1788. Jesus, but our

  1789. command is to

  1790. put on Jesus.

  1791. That's how we put

  1792. on the whole

  1793. armor of God.

  1794. So our question

  1795. for ourselves

  1796. in our homes,

  1797. have we put on

  1798. Jesus today?

  1799. Let's pray

  1800. together.

  1801. God, I pray that

  1802. we would put you

  1803. on.

  1804. Thank you for

  1805. simplifying it for

  1806. us.

  1807. We understand

1808. that we are in a

  1809. battle.

  1810. Sometimes it

  1811. might feel like

  1812. we're losing.

  1813. But as that

  1814. songwriter said,

  1815. we're fighting a

  1816. battle you've

  1817. already won.

  1818. God, I pray that

  1819. we would put on

  1820. the victor, put on

  1821. Jesus every day.

  1822. It's so clear when

  1823. we haven't.

  1824. Our spouses know

  1825. it, our kids know

  1826. it, our friends

  1827. know it, our

  1828. employees or our

  1829. bosses know it,

  1830. everybody knows when

  1831. we haven't put on

  1832. Jesus.

  1833. God, I pray that

  1834. every morning when

  1835. we wake up, every

  1836. night before we go

  1837. to bed, we would

  1838. fall to our knees,

  1839. we would take the

  1840. time to put on

  1841. Jesus.

  1842. Whatever that looks

  1843. like for us, we'll

  1844. give you the glory

  1845. for it.

  1846. In Jesus' name we

  1847. pray.

  1848. Amen.
