  1. For the last time we get to watch that little video introduction, how many of y'all have enjoyed our study of Paul's letter to the church in Ephesus?

  2. Yeah, I have enjoyed it too. Well, in honor of that, I'm going to re-preach all the sermons this morning that I've preached over the last few months.

  3. Look, we should be out of here in about three hours, alright? So, it's alright.

  4. Alright, the funny thing is, I am actually going to go back.

  5. If you have come in in the middle of this series, or at the tail end, or you missed some along the way, that's okay.

  6. I'm going to give you a little summary of each chapter as we prepare to wrap up this series in Ephesians.

  7. So, if you'll take your Bibles and go to Ephesians 6, and if you'd like to turn all the way back to chapter 1 and go with me as we go chapter by chapter,

  8. up to chapter 6, you can. But I'm going to be starting off talking about this book.

  9. It's divided into two sections. Let's say it together. Ready?

  10. Who we are, how we live. That's kind of the themes of the book of Ephesians,

  11. written by the Apostle Paul, who wrote many, many books in the New Testament.

  12. It was written around AD 62 from his setting in Roman imprisonment.

  13. He was likely under house arrest at this time.

  14. This was a church he was very familiar with.

  15. He had been their pastor for approximately three years, and you can read all about that in Acts chapter 19.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  16. So, much of the study from this series was done from these two books,

  17. as well as a few others kind of trickled in,

  18. but the Christ-Centered Exposition series and the Bible Exposition Commentary.

  19. Part 1, again, talks about who we are in Christ, who we are in Christ.

  20. So, by way of review, let's dive into it.

  21. Chapter 1, Ephesians chapter 1, we talked about understanding my identity in Christ causes real-life worship.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  22. Y'all remember that?

  23. Understanding my identity in Christ causes real-life worship.

  24. Verse 7 of Ephesians 1, in Him, in Jesus, we have redemption through His blood,

  25. the forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of His grace.

  26. And in verse 6, it says, to the praise of His glorious grace.

  27. So, when we understand all that God did for us,

  28. all that He made us to be in spite of how bad we are,

  29. God, you know, you know how bad you are, you know how bad I am.

  30. You may not know how bad I am, but let me tell you, it's pretty bad, okay?

  31. In spite of us, God loved us so much that He gave us real-life value.

  32. He gave us real-life worth.

  33. So much worth that it cost the blood of His own Son.

  34. So, that understanding, that identity in Christ Jesus causes us to worship Him in real life.

  35. Not just sing the songs, not just show up at church, but real-life worship, obedience, prayer,

  36. taking time, setting time aside to dive into His Word where He reveals Himself to us.

  37. Again, in chapter 1, it says, we studied several weeks ago,

  38. my confidence grows as my intimate knowledge of God grows.

  39. My confidence grows as my intimate knowledge of God grows.

  40. Back in verse 18,

  41. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened

  42. so that you may know what is the hope of His calling,

  43. what is the wealth of His glorious inheritance in the saints,

  44. and what is His immeasurable greatness of power toward us who believed.

  45. Our confidence in God can grow when we understand

  46. and begin to gain a more intimate knowledge of how great God is,

  47. how much better God is than we are,

  48. how much mightier,

  49. how much more faithful and reliable than our confidence in Him grows.

  50. And then, since He has given us such worth and called us His children,

  51. our confidence in ourselves can grow,

  52. not in our flesh,

  53. but in His Spirit,

  54. which lives in us.

  55. So, chapter 2.

  56. Chapter 2.

  57. A gospel-centered life gives me purpose.

  58. A gospel-centered life gives me purpose.

  59. What do we mean by that?

  60. Whoa.

  61. Sorry.

  62. I jumped ahead a little bit.

  63. Here we go.

  64. I give up earthly privileges.

  65. I give up earthly preferences.

  66. I give up earthly priorities.

  67. And I give up earthly passions.

  68. Then, I daily trade my earthly identity for my heavenly identity.

  69. So, this is kind of the theme of chapter 2.

  70. All right?

  71. Let's back up.

  72. A gospel-centered life gives me purpose.

  73. First of all,

  74. you and I are always trying to find the purpose for our broad life,

  75. the purpose for our year,

  76. the purpose for our month,

  77. the purpose for our day.

  78. What will our purpose be today?

  79. What will the purpose be of this conversation?

  80. What will the purpose be of this task?

  81. Our purpose should come from our gospel-centered life.

  82. What do we mean by gospel-centered life?

  83. It means that we are centering our life

  84. in the decisions we make,

  85. in the actions we make,

  86. in the way we think.

  87. We've been talking in Romans 12

  88. about changing the way we think.

  89. We've been talking about changing us

  90. from self-centered to gospel-centered.

  91. I recognize that my new identity in Christ

  92. reframes my life to not be about me anymore.

  93. Now it's about Jesus and what he did for me

  94. and what he is making me to become.

  95. So now the decisions I make are in that new mind,

  96. toward that new man that God is creating in me.

  97. So a gospel-centered life then gives me purpose.

  98. Now I know what I should say to that person

  99. who's mistreating me.

  100. Now I know how I should respond to that person

  101. when I want to respond one way,

  102. but I know that my purpose

  103. in this gospel-centered life

  104. would be to respond how Jesus would.

  105. So that means we have to give up earthly privileges

  106. that we would otherwise hold tightly to.

  107. We give up earthly preferences

  108. that seem like the biggest thing in the world to us.

  109. We give up earthly priorities.

  110. You ever had somebody rearrange your priorities?

  111. You ever had life rearrange your priorities?

  112. You ever had life?

  113. Moving along, trying to make as much money as you can,

  114. trying to be as successful as you can,

  115. and then all of a sudden a heart attack hits.

  116. All of a sudden something stops you in your tracks

  117. that rearranges your priorities.

  118. The gospel can do that for you in the best of ways.

  119. And then we give up our earthly passions.

  120. What passions of the flesh are drawing you away

  121. from the beautiful, beautiful future

  122. that God has lined out for you?

  123. So, we daily trade our earthly identity

  124. for our heavenly identity.

  125. And then, chapter 3,

  126. we talked about a Christ-centered Christian.

  127. How a Christ-centered Christian

  128. is a willing prisoner of Christ.

  129. A Christ-centered Christian understands

  130. the mystery of Christ.

  131. So willingly, we're surrendering to Christ

  132. and saying,

  133. God, I don't fully understand you

  134. and everything about your mystery,

  135. but I understand that it's a mystery.

  136. Why did you love me so much?

  137. Why did you send your son to die for me?

  138. How did you know that I would be a sinner

  139. and yet you chose me?

  140. And yet you gave me the ability to respond to you

  141. and the responsibility to say yes to your call.

  142. We don't understand everything about the mystery of God,

  143. but we understand that it's a beautiful mystery

  144. and it has saved our souls.

  145. What a wonderful thing.

  146. And a Christ-centered Christian

  147. is a servant of the gospel of Christ.

  148. That's that rearranging of priorities.

  149. We're no longer a servant to sin.

  150. Now we are a servant to a much better master.

  151. The gospel of Jesus.

  152. The good news of Jesus that says,

  153. hey, I'm a sinner.

  154. You're a sinner.

  155. We're all sinners.

  156. But God, in his great love with which he loved us,

  157. sent his only son, Jesus.

  158. And that is the message that I will take

  159. to anyone everywhere.

  160. I will be a servant to that good news.

  161. And because we're a servant of the gospel,

  162. we proclaim the riches of Christ.

  163. The wonderful riches.

  164. Does your life reflect the riches of Christ?

  165. Would your spouse say your life reflects the riches of Christ?

  166. Would your kids say your life reflect the riches of Christ?

  167. If not, we need to spend a little more time

  168. thinking, praying, focusing on that gospel

  169. and letting it change us from the inside out.

  170. Letting it change the way we think.

  171. And then people will believe us

  172. when we proclaim the riches of Christ.

  173. Say, hey, trust me.

  174. God is so rich in mercy.

  175. He's so rich in grace.

  176. He's so rich in love.

  177. And he wants to be that for you too.

  178. And then a Christ-centered Christian

  179. boldly accesses the Father.

  180. In chapter 3,

  181. a Christ-centered Christian

  182. boldly accesses the Father.

  183. We don't have to be ashamed to come to God

  184. because despite all of our faults,

  185. despite all of our shortcomings,

  186. he welcomes us with open arms.

  187. He never holds it over our head.

  188. He welcomes us as a good father would to his child.

  189. So,

  190. for some reason,

  191. this is not advancing anymore.

  192. Can you take me to the next slide?

  193. There we go.

  194. Thank you.

  195. I don't know why that's not working.

  196. It was working.

  197. So, continuing in chapter 3,

  198. Jesus Christ himself,

  199. y'all remember this part,

  200. is the why behind the what

  201. of me being a Christian.

  202. Jesus is the why behind the what.

  203. How many of you grew up in churches

  204. that always talk to you,

  205. whether it's this church or another one,

  206. that so often talk to you

  207. about what you should do

  208. or what you should not do as a Christian.

  209. I grew up like that.

  210. Oftentimes,

  211. and listen,

  212. the Bible is full of those kinds of admonitions

  213. of what we should do

  214. and what we should not do as Christians.

  215. However,

  216. sometimes in churches,

  217. probably more than sometimes,

  218. we have missed the why behind the what.

  219. We talked about this several weeks ago.

  220. Jesus is the why behind the what.

  221. Sometimes,

  222. then,

  223. in our efforts

  224. to get people to conform

  225. to how we think

  226. a Christian ought to be,

  227. we lack

  228. telling them about the motivation.

  229. We lack telling them

  230. about the real reason

  231. why

  232. you shouldn't go out

  233. and get drunk.

  234. Why you shouldn't go out

  235. and do the things

  236. that your flesh tells you to do.

  237. Why you should go

  238. be faithful to be here

  239. on Sundays in church

  240. and not forsake the gathering

  241. of the church body together.

  242. All these things

  243. that the Bible commands

  244. a Christian to do,

  245. the Bible is very clear

  246. about the why.

  247. But sometimes,

  248. we've missed that.

  249. So we've got to remind ourselves

  250. that Jesus is the why

  251. behind the what.

  252. It says in verse 18 of chapter 3,

  253. Through Him,

  254. through Jesus Christ,

  255. we both have access

  256. in one spirit

  257. to one Father.

  258. So,

  259. we talked about

  260. powerful prayer.

  261. Which is awesome

  262. because in just a few minutes,

  263. we're going to wrap up this book

  264. at the end of chapter 6

  265. and talk about

  266. powerful prayer.

  267. But there's a little preview

  268. here in chapter 3.

  269. It says,

  270. Pray with humility.

  271. Pray for God's full power

  272. and full love.

  273. Pray with great expectations.

  274. Can you imagine

  275. a prayer life

  276. that looks like that?

  277. Where we humbly

  278. come before God?

  279. Not thinking,

  280. Man,

  281. I'm a pretty good Christian.

  282. God needs to listen to me

  283. and He better do

  284. what I want.

  285. None of us would ever

  286. say that, right?

  287. But sometimes,

  288. that's the attitude

  289. we bring in prayer.

  290. And then,

  291. if God doesn't respond

  292. exactly how we want Him to,

  293. we get a little

  294. bent out of shape sometimes.

  295. But praying with humility

  296. and praying for God's

  297. full power

  298. and full love.

  299. Can you imagine

  300. a prayer life like that?

  301. Praying for God's

  302. full power

  303. and full love

  304. in your life

  305. or in the life

  306. of someone you're praying for?

  307. What a difference

  308. that would make.

  309. And praying

  310. with great expectations.

  311. It's an old missionary,

  312. C.T. Stud,

  313. who said,

  314. expect great things

  315. from God

  316. and attempt great things

  317. for God.

  318. Pray with great expectations.

  319. There is nothing

  320. that God can't do.

  321. There's no mountain

  322. He won't move.

  323. So we should pray

  324. expecting nothing less

  325. than God's greatness

  326. to be at work.

  327. And then,

  328. well,

  329. it's kind of working sometimes

  330. and then not.

  331. So if you'll take me

  332. to the next one,

  333. sorry,

  334. thank you,

  335. ask God to help you

  336. take the next step

  337. in your life.

  338. What do we mean by that?

  339. Ask God to help you

  340. take the next step

  341. in your life.

  342. The second to last verse

  343. of Ephesians 3,

  344. now to Him

  345. who is able to do

  346. above and beyond

  347. all that we ask

  348. or think

  349. according to the power

  350. that works in us,

  351. to Him be glory.

  352. God can do everything

  353. that we want Him to do

  354. and so much more.

  355. So sometimes

  356. He doesn't answer us

  357. exactly

  358. as we want Him

  359. to answer us

  360. because He wants

  361. to give us

  362. that so much more part.

  363. And in our mind,

  364. that doesn't work,

  365. right?

  366. Because we're this

  367. small-minded,

  368. right here,

  369. right now

  370. kind of people.

  371. We don't see it

  372. from His perspective.

  373. So God might be

  374. wanting us

  375. to take the next step

  376. toward this beautiful ending

  377. that He has for us.

  378. And that might look

  379. a little different

  380. than what we have planned.

  381. So we have to ask God,

  382. God,

  383. what is the next step

  384. that I need to take

  385. in my prayer life?

  386. And then chapter,

  387. well,

  388. before we jump

  389. into chapter 4,

  390. we're launching

  391. into part 2.

  392. So that was our identity

  393. in Christ,

  394. who we are in Christ.

  395. Part 2,

  396. how we live

  397. for Christ.

  398. How we live

  399. for Christ.

  400. We said in chapter 4,

  401. God's design

  402. is diversity.

  403. Satan's distraction

  404. is division.

  405. God's design

  406. is the diversity

  407. of the believers.

  408. Look around this church.

  409. Seriously,

  410. look around for a minute.

  411. Check around,

  412. you know,

  413. I'm giving you permission.

  414. Look at everybody's outfits.

  415. Judge not,

  416. lest ye be judged.

  417. Look around

  418. at this diverse crowd

  419. we got in here.

  420. We got all kinds of people

  421. from all kinds

  422. of different walks of life,

  423. right?

  424. All kinds of different

  425. experiences and backgrounds

  426. in here.

  427. That's God's design.

  428. God's design

  429. is diversity.

  430. Diversity among races.

  431. Diversity among genders.

  432. Diversity among

  433. financial standing.

  434. Diversity among

  435. family life.

  436. Diversity among

  437. experiences and backgrounds.

  438. Diversity among future.

  439. But God brings us

  440. all together

  441. under His banner.

  442. His banner of love.

  443. His banner of being

  444. washed in His blood.

  445. Washed clean

  446. from all those sins

  447. that separate us

  448. from Him.

  449. But Satan wants

  450. to take that same concept

  451. and distort it.

  452. His distraction for us

  453. is division.

  454. God's design

  455. was this beautiful

  456. diverse body

  457. gathering together

  458. under His name.

  459. Satan's distraction

  460. is highlighting

  461. those differences

  462. to drive us apart.

  463. And that happens

  464. so often in churches.

  465. Y'all,

  466. I think it's incredible

  467. that this church

  468. has been around

  469. since 1876.

  470. Right?

  471. Most churches

  472. never last that long.

  473. So,

  474. chapter 4.

  475. We walk worthy

  476. before God

  477. when we apply

  478. the gospel

  479. directly.

  480. We're challenged

  481. in chapter 4.

  482. Live worthy

  483. of the calling

  484. you have received.

  485. So,

  486. when we apply

  487. this gospel

  488. of diversity,

  489. when we apply

  490. this gospel

  491. of unity,

  492. when we apply

  493. this gospel

  494. of not putting

  495. ourselves above

  496. everybody else,

  497. then we walk

  498. worthy of that

  499. gospel that we've

  500. received,

  501. that we've received

  502. because we're applying

  503. it directly.

  504. Can I tell you

  505. the gospel of Jesus,

  506. the good news

  507. is Jesus,

  508. of Jesus,

  509. is not just good enough

  510. to save you

  511. from your sins,

  512. it's good enough

  513. to get you

  514. through this life.

  515. it's good enough

  516. to help you

  517. walk worthy

  518. before God.

  519. But you've got

  520. to apply it.

  521. Not just applying

  522. it by putting

  523. your faith in Jesus

  524. and saying,

  525. I trust Jesus

  526. enough to save

  527. me from my sin.

  528. I trust Him

  529. enough that He

  530. died on the cross,

  531. that He was buried,

  532. that He didn't

  533. stay dead,

  534. He came up

  535. out of the grave

  536. and He's alive today.

  537. He hears me

  538. when I pray,

  539. He hears me

  540. when I sing to Him.

  541. I believe,

  542. I put my faith

  543. in Him

  544. for salvation.

  545. That's good,

  546. that's the starting place.

  547. But you've got

  548. to keep applying

  549. the gospel

  550. in all the days

  551. that come after that

  552. until He brings us home.

  553. So many Christians

  554. have been saved

  555. for so many years.

  556. Man,

  557. that day

  558. when you put your faith

  559. in Jesus

  560. was 20,

  561. 30,

  562. 40,

  563. 50,

  564. 60,

  565. 70 years ago.

  566. But you haven't

  567. applied that gospel

  568. very many days

  569. after that.

  570. There's no other way

  571. to walk worthy

  572. before God

  573. than when we apply

  574. the gospel directly.

  575. So what does that look like?

  576. It looks like

  577. a new creation

  578. from conversion

  579. to transformation.

  580. We're not just staying

  581. at the converted part.

  582. Talking about

  583. getting saved,

  584. we call it.

  585. Putting your faith

  586. in Jesus

  587. and saying,

  588. I believe.

  589. That makes you

  590. a child of God.

  591. That makes you

  592. a Christian.

  593. That's being converted

  594. from death to life.

  595. But then

  596. the transformation

  597. part happens.

  598. Then the Holy Spirit

  599. starts to transform you

  600. and change you

  601. from the inside out.

  602. Once again,

  603. we're hitting on churches again.

  604. Sometimes churches

  605. have tried to change people

  606. from the outside in.

  607. It doesn't work

  608. very well,

  609. does it?

  610. You can get people

  611. to conform

  612. to the outside changes

  613. you want them to make.

  614. I've seen it happen.

  615. I've seen it happen

  616. in my own life.

  617. But inwardly,

  618. they're not changed.

  619. Inwardly,

  620. they're just as rotten

  621. as you want their outside

  622. to stop being.

  623. God wants to transform you

  624. from the outside,

  625. from the inside out.

  626. Romans 12,

  627. once again,

  628. he wants to change

  629. the way you think.

  630. So,

  631. Romans 4,

  632. I'm sorry,

  633. Ephesians 4,

  634. daily renew

  635. my values

  636. to reflect

  637. my new nature

  638. in Christ.

  639. Y'all,

  640. this is a daily

  641. transformation.

  642. It's not a one-time

  643. pill

  644. that you take

  645. that makes you

  646. look like Jesus

  647. every day.

  648. Doesn't work.

  649. It is a daily renewal

  650. saying,

  651. going to God

  652. in prayer

  653. better than any pill

  654. could be.

  655. He's always there.

  656. He's always effective.

  657. And the side effects

  658. are grace,

  659. peace,

  660. faith,

  661. love,

  662. hope,

  663. joy,

  664. long-suffering,

  665. goodness,

  666. patience,

  667. meekness.

  668. So,

  669. we daily renew

  670. our values

  671. to reflect

  672. our new nature

  673. in Christ.

  674. Your family knows

  675. when you do this.

  676. Your family knows

  677. when you don't.

  678. You know when you do this.

  679. You know when you don't.

  680. So,

  681. that's our challenge.

  682. Here's a question.

  683. How often

  684. do my words

  685. and actions

  686. cause grief

  687. to the God

  688. who loves me

  689. so deeply?

  690. How often

  691. do my words

  692. and actions

  693. cause grief

  694. to the God

  695. who loves me

  696. so deeply?

  697. In the latter part

  698. of Ephesians 4,

  699. putting away lying,

  700. speak truth,

  701. each one,

  702. to his neighbor.

  703. Be angry

  704. and do not sin.

  705. Be kind

  706. and compassionate

  707. to one another,

  708. forgiving one another

  709. just as God

  710. also forgave you

  711. in Christ.

  712. God laid so much

  713. on the line.

  714. He sacrificed everything.

  715. He gave up

  716. His one

  717. and only Son,

  718. His highest prize,

  719. His highest treasure.

  720. So,

  721. why would we then

  722. turn around

  723. and hold back

  724. so much from Him?

  725. Why would we not

  726. turn around

  727. and forgive our neighbor?

  728. Why would we not

  729. show the same kind of love

  730. that God showed to us?

  731. My true nature

  732. is revealed

  733. in my words,

  734. my actions,

  735. and my attitudes

  736. toward others.

  737. That's what Ephesians 4

  738. challenges us on

  739. so much.

  740. Be kind to each other.

  741. Be gentle

  742. with each other.

  743. Share with each other.

  744. Don't be stingy.

  745. Don't be prideful.

  746. Don't be arrogant.

  747. Don't be hateful

  748. and unkind.

  749. Our true nature,

  750. that daily renewal

  751. of our attitudes,

  752. our perspectives,

  753. is revealed

  754. in our words,

  755. our actions,

  756. and our attitudes

  757. toward others.

  758. So,

  759. how often

  760. does my path

  761. stray from following

  762. Jesus' footsteps?

  763. The answer is

  764. pretty often,

  765. isn't it?

  766. It's true.

  767. The answer is

  768. pretty often.

  769. Chapter 5

  770. challenges us

  771. to imitate Jesus

  772. when we walk in love,

  773. light,

  774. and wisdom.

  775. Love,

  776. light,

  777. and wisdom.

  778. Everything exposed

  779. by the light

  780. is made visible.

  781. What makes everything

  782. visible is light.

  783. Get up,

  784. sleeper.

  785. Rise from the dead

  786. and Christ

  787. will shine on you.

  788. Let the light

  789. of Jesus

  790. shine into

  791. the dark corners

  792. of your life.

  793. Whether it's sin,

  794. whether it's trauma

  795. from the past,

  796. whether it's

  797. a broken relationship,

  798. whatever the dark

  799. corners of your mind

  800. and your heart

  801. and your life are,

  802. God can shine there

  803. and He can transform it.

  804. He can bring hope

  805. where there is no hope.

  806. And He can help you

  807. develop that new nature

  808. that walks worthy

  809. of Him

  810. and His gospel.

  811. So,

  812. then we get into,

  813. I want to make sure

  814. we got,

  815. there we go.

  816. Then we get into

  817. the last part

  818. of chapter 5

  819. and it talks about

  820. mutual submission.

  821. We pivot then

  822. if we're talking about

  823. being kind to each other,

  824. treating each other well,

  825. then we start

  826. getting specific.

  827. Paul starts highlighting

  828. different relationships,

  829. husband and wife,

  830. bosses and employees,

  831. parents and children.

  832. And he introduces

  833. this concept

  834. of mutual submission.

  835. We submit

  836. to God's Spirit

  837. in us

  838. when we voluntarily

  839. submit to each other.

  840. This is not

  841. lording it over each other.

  842. This is not saying,

  843. I'm in charge,

  844. you better listen to me.

  845. That's not at all

  846. the Spirit

  847. that Jesus taught

  848. His disciples

  849. and that's not at all

  850. the Spirit

  851. that Paul is teaching us.

  852. He says,

  853. submit one another

  854. to one another,

  855. submit yourselves

  856. to each other.

  857. So,

  858. how does God

  859. want to change

  860. my thinking

  861. to see my relationships

  862. as He would see them?

  863. You might have had

  864. a different view

  865. of your relationships,

  866. but how are you

  867. going to let God

  868. influence how you view

  869. your relationships?

  870. Husbands,

  871. are you going to let God

  872. change the way

  873. you think

  874. about your home

  875. and about your wife?

  876. Wives,

  877. are you going to let God

  878. influence the way

  879. you think about your husband?

  880. Husbands,

  881. we're supposed to love

  882. our wives sacrificially,

  883. lay down our life

  884. for them

  885. as Jesus did

  886. for His church.

  887. Husbands,

  888. I mean,

  889. wives,

  890. you're supposed to

  891. lovingly honor,

  892. respect,

  893. and follow your husband

  894. as he follows Christ.

  895. And as he follows Christ,

  896. laying his life down

  897. for you,

  898. that is a picture

  899. of mutual submission

  900. to each other,

  901. not one dominating

  902. over the other.

  903. Chapter 5 also says,

  904. we submit to God's Spirit

  905. in us when we voluntarily

  906. submit to each other.

  907. That's what it teaches

  908. at the end of chapter 5.

  909. Then,

  910. we get into serving the Lord

  911. by serving others.

  912. In chapter 6,

  913. it gets into parents

  914. and children,

  915. bosses and employees,

  916. and this concept

  917. continues on.

  918. Less hierarchy,

  919. more humility.

  920. Less who's in charge,

  921. and more,

  922. how can I serve?

  923. You understand

  924. there's a mind shift?

  925. Once again,

  926. we're just going to

  927. keep hitting on it.

  928. Romans 12,

  929. changing the way

  930. you think.

  931. That's why I referenced

  932. this passage

  933. time and time again

  934. through our study

  935. of Ephesians.

  936. So the first part

  937. of chapter 6,

  938. we serve God

  939. when we willingly

  940. serve each other.

  941. Parents serving children.

  942. Sometimes that looks like

  943. training them up

  944. in the way they should go.

  945. Teaching them.

  946. To follow Jesus

  947. in all of His teachings.

  948. That's often how parents

  949. can serve their kids.

  950. But also,

  951. not being cruel,

  952. not being unkind,

  953. not being impatient

  954. is a way parents

  955. can serve their kids.

  956. Kids,

  957. you can serve your parents

  958. by honoring them,

  959. by obeying them,

  960. so your days would be long

  961. on this land.

  962. And then we got into

  963. the last part

  964. of chapter 6.

  965. Last Sunday,

  966. and we said,

  967. know your enemy,

  968. Satan himself,

  969. see some passages,

  970. some verses about that.

  971. Our struggle is not

  972. against flesh and blood.

  973. It's against rulers,

  974. authorities,

  975. the cosmic powers

  976. of this darkness,

  977. against evil,

  978. spiritual forces

  979. in the heaven.

  980. It's against all

  981. the darkness of sin.

  982. It's against all

  983. the darkness

  984. of lostness.

  985. Wade in here.

  986. Do you remember

  987. when I said last Sunday,

  988. our enemy is not

  989. each other,

  990. our enemy is

  991. lostness,

  992. being lost,

  993. all the darkness,

  994. spiritual darkness

  995. out there of being lost

  996. and not being saved.

  997. I went to Wade's Bible study

  998. the next night.

  999. By the way,

  1000. men,

  1001. if you haven't had a chance

1002. to attend Wade's Bible study

  1003. on Monday nights,

  1004. that's an awesome opportunity.

  1005. Jump in with that

  1006. if you can,

  1007. if your schedule allows.

1008. And I went last week

  1009. and it's a great,

  1010. great time,

  1011. a fellowship,

  1012. Bible study,

  1013. prayer.

  1014. So I got there

  1015. and Wade had drawn

  1016. the Loch Ness Monster.

1017. You know what they call

  1018. the Loch Ness Monster?

  1019. Nessie.

1020. They call her Nessie sometimes.

1021. Well, this was Lossie, right?

  1022. Lossie,

  1023. the lostness monster

  1024. instead of Loch Ness.

  1025. I'm just saying that

1026. so it'll stick in your head,

  1027. all right?

  1028. So who's our enemy?

  1029. Lossie,

  1030. the lostness monster,

  1031. okay?

  1032. We're fighting against

  1033. lostness out there.

1034. We're not fighting each other.

  1035. We're not fighting politics.

  1036. We're not fighting Hollywood.

  1037. We're fighting against sin.

  1038. And then you know

  1039. your equipment.

  1040. You know your enemy

1041. and you know your equipment.

  1042. And we talked about

  1043. the armor of God.

1044. Our enemy is the spiritual

  1045. darkness of lostness,

  1046. but our equipment

1047. is the spiritual armor of God.

  1048. You see,

  1049. spiritual fights spiritual.

1050. We can talk about gun control

1051. and what kind of guns

1052. we should be allowed to own

  1053. and all this,

  1054. but y'all,

  1055. that's not what we're fighting

  1056. this spiritual battle with.

1057. We're fighting this spiritual battle

1058. with the armor of God.

1059. And we went through it last Sunday.

1060. Every piece of protective armor,

  1061. the weapon,

1062. which is the word of God,

  1063. that two-edged sword.

1064. So we prepare for war

  1065. by putting on

  1066. the Lord Jesus himself.

  1067. All the armor,

  1068. all the weapons

  1069. that you can assemble

1070. is nothing without Christ himself.

  1071. He's the one

  1072. that gives the power.

  1073. So,

1074. in the last five minutes today,

1075. we're going to close out

  1076. Ephesians 6.

1077. Would you look with me

  1078. at verse 10?

1079. If you're able to join us

  1080. in standing,

  1081. would you stand?

1082. If you need to remain seated,

  1083. that's fine.

  1084. Ephesians 6,

  1085. and verse 10.

  1086. Finally,

1087. be strengthened by the Lord

1088. and by his vast strength.

1089. Skip down to verse 18.

  1090. Pray at all times

  1091. in the Spirit

1092. with every prayer and request.

  1093. Stay alert

  1094. with all perseverance

  1095. and intercession

  1096. for all the saints.

  1097. Pray also for me

  1098. that the message

1099. may be given to me

1100. when I open my mouth

1101. to make known with boldness

1102. the mystery of the gospel.

  1103. For this,

1104. I am an ambassador in chains.

1105. Pray that I might be bold enough

  1106. to speak about it

  1107. as I should.

  1108. And then he gives

  1109. his farewell address.

  1110. Tychicus,

  1111. our dearly loved brother

  1112. and faithful servant

  1113. in the Lord,

1114. will tell you all the news

  1115. about me

1116. so you can be informed.

1117. I'm sending him to you

  1118. for this reason,

  1119. to let you know

  1120. how we are

1121. and to encourage your hearts.

  1122. Peace to the brothers

  1123. and sisters

  1124. and love with faith

  1125. from God the Father

1126. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1127. Grace be with all

  1128. who have undying love

1129. for our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1130. You may be seated.

  1131. Prayer is the power.

  1132. How do we remember

1133. who we are in Christ?

1134. How do we wake up

  1135. every morning and say,

1136. man, I'm not going to be upset.

  1137. I'm a child of God.

  1138. Prayer is the power.

  1139. Going to God first,

1140. the start of each day.

  1141. Closing each day

1142. by going back to God

1143. before we go to sleep.

  1144. Doing as Jesus did

1145. and praying before our meals.

  1146. Stopping along the way

1147. to give thanks to God.

  1148. Stopping to bring problems

  1149. to Him.

  1150. Stopping to bring requests

1151. to Him as needs arise.

  1152. Prayer is the power.

  1153. All the time,

  1154. everywhere,

  1155. for everything,

  1156. and everyone.

1157. How are we supposed to pray?

  1158. Let's say it together.

  1159. Would you join me?

  1160. All the time,

  1161. everywhere,

  1162. for everything,

  1163. and everyone.

  1164. Let's do it again.

  1165. All the time,

  1166. everywhere,

  1167. for everything,

  1168. and everyone.

  1169. That's how we're supposed

  1170. to pray.

  1171. That's how we're supposed

  1172. to pray.

1173. So can you and I

  1174. improve our prayer life?

  1175. Yeah?

  1176. Can you improve

  1177. your prayer life?

  1178. I know I can improve mine.

1179. Y'all looking at me like,

1180. no, I got this under control,

1181. but I think you can.

1182. Verse 18 tells us that.

  1183. Pray at all times

  1184. in the Spirit

  1185. with every prayer

  1186. and every request.

  1187. Okay?

  1188. That's our commission

  1189. from God.

  1190. 1 Thessalonians 5, 17

  1191. gives a similar charge.

  1192. Pray constantly.

  1193. Give thanks in everything,

1194. for this is God's will

1195. for you in Christ Jesus.

  1196. Give thanks to God

  1197. in the good times.

  1198. Give thanks to God

  1199. in the bad times.

  1200. In every season,

  1201. for everything,

  1202. give thanks to God,

  1203. even when it breaks

  1204. your heart,

  1205. even when it's hard,

  1206. even when it's difficult.

1207. Thank God you have someone

1208. to run to in prayer.

  1209. Philippians 4, 6.

  1210. Don't worry about anything,

  1211. but in everything,

  1212. through prayer and petition,

  1213. with thanksgiving,

  1214. present your requests

  1215. to God.

1216. D.L. Moody said it this way,

1217. He who kneels the most

  1218. stands the best.

  1219. Thought that was one

  1220. of the best quotes

  1221. I've read on prayer.

1222. He who kneels the most

  1223. in prayer

  1224. stands the best

  1225. in this life.

  1226. Number two,

  1227. pray for gospel advance.

  1228. This is what Paul

1229. asked them to pray for.

1230. At the end of this letter,

  1231. after everything

  1232. he'd given them,

  1233. all this incredible content

  1234. that came from

1235. the Holy Spirit of God,

  1236. and it was preserved

  1237. for you and I

  1238. to read today,

  1239. Paul closes it out

  1240. by saying,

1241. pray that I will share

  1242. the gospel.

  1243. Pray for the gospel

  1244. to flourish.

  1245. Y'all,

  1246. how many times

  1247. have we been guilty

  1248. of not praying

  1249. for the gospel?

  1250. Not praying

  1251. for the lost

  1252. to be saved.

  1253. Our enemy

  1254. is lostness.

  1255. We'll pray against

1256. a lot of other things.

  1257. We'll pray for

1258. a lot of other things,

  1259. but so often

  1260. we don't pray

  1261. for the gospel

  1262. to advance.

1263. And we read about this

  1264. in verses 19 and 20.

  1265. Romans 10, 1,

1266. Paul was all about this.

  1267. He said,

  1268. my heart's desire

  1269. and my prayer

  1270. for God,

  1271. to God,

  1272. is that they

  1273. would be saved.

  1274. He's talking about

  1275. the Israelites

  1276. who were lost,

  1277. his people,

  1278. his countrymen.

  1279. He wanted them

  1280. to be saved.

  1281. How many friends,

  1282. co-workers,

  1283. families,

  1284. neighbors,

  1285. how many people

  1286. do you know

  1287. in your life

1288. that need to be saved?

  1289. And are we praying

  1290. for them?

  1291. Are we praying?

  1292. Is that our heart's

  1293. desire to God?

  1294. Matthew 9, 38,

  1295. Jesus said,

  1296. pray earnestly

  1297. to the Lord

  1298. of the harvest

  1299. to send out laborers

  1300. into his harvest.

1301. We pray for the lost

  1302. to be saved

  1303. and we pray

  1304. for the saved

  1305. to be sent

  1306. out

  1307. as witnesses,

  1308. as missionaries

  1309. with his gospel,

  1310. people.

  1311. It's a hard quote,

  1312. y'all.

  1313. Paul Washer,

  1314. a pastor

  1315. who often tells it

  1316. like it is,

  1317. okay,

  1318. he said,

  1319. we spend more time

  1320. praying to keep

  1321. saints out of heaven

  1322. than we ever spend

  1323. praying to get

  1324. sinners into heaven.

  1325. I'm not saying

  1326. you shouldn't pray

  1327. for Aunt So-and-So's

  1328. heart attack

  1329. or whatever,

1330. you fill in the blank

  1331. with the health concern,

  1332. but y'all,

  1333. is it true

  1334. that we probably

  1335. spend more time

  1336. praying to keep

  1337. saints on this earth

  1338. and out of heaven?

  1339. than we ever pray

  1340. to get sinners

  1341. into heaven.

  1342. God,

  1343. save my sister.

  1344. God,

  1345. save my brother.

  1346. Save my son.

  1347. Save my mom.

  1348. Save my boss.

  1349. Save my neighbor.

  1350. Save that person

  1351. that drives me nuts.

  1352. So finally,

  1353. verse 23 and 24.

  1354. we can be encouraged.

  1355. I don't want to leave you

  1356. just feeling guilty.

1357. It's not how Paul left us

  1358. in Ephesians here.

1359. Be encouraged by God's peace,

  1360. his love,

  1361. his faith,

  1362. and his grace.

  1363. Those four words

1364. are found in the final two

  1365. verses of Ephesians.

  1366. God's peace,

  1367. love,

  1368. faith,

  1369. and grace.

  1370. God's peace.

  1371. So as we pray,

1372. as we pray for all things,

  1373. for everyone,

  1374. at all times,

1375. for the gospel to advance,

1376. we know that God's got us.

1377. We know that our faith in him,

1378. that he bore in our hearts,

  1379. and we responded to

1380. when he called our name.

  1381. And the love

  1382. that he continually

  1383. shows to us

  1384. and calls us

1385. to show to each other.

  1386. And the grace

  1387. that he initially

  1388. showed us

  1389. in not sending us

  1390. to hell

1391. to pay for our sins.

  1392. And the grace

  1393. that he continues

1394. to show us every day

  1395. in withholding

  1396. so many things

  1397. from us

  1398. that our mistakes

  1399. and our failures

  1400. would otherwise

  1401. lead us into.

  1402. And the peace

  1403. that surpasses

  1404. all our understanding.

  1405. The peace

  1406. that is beyond explanation.

  1407. The peace

  1408. in the middle

  1409. of the storm.

  1410. These four things

  1411. will go with us.

  1412. As we go into

  1413. another sermon series,

  1414. as we leave today

1415. and we go have lunch,

  1416. as we get up

1417. and go to work tomorrow,

  1418. as we get up

  1419. and interact

  1420. with each other,

  1421. these four things

  1422. can carry us on.

  1423. God's peace,

  1424. his love,

  1425. his faith

1426. that he gave to us

  1427. and his grace.

  1428. So the takeaway

  1429. for today,

  1430. God's great purpose

  1431. for me

  1432. starts with prayer.

  1433. Ephesians is all about

  1434. God's great purpose.

1435. Who are we in Christ?

  1436. What are we supposed

  1437. to do for Christ?

  1438. Christ.

1439. This is God's great purpose

  1440. for me.

  1441. For you

  1442. and for me,

  1443. it starts

  1444. with prayer.

  1445. So church,

1446. I want to call us

1447. into a season of prayer.

1448. For the next several months,

  1449. you'll hear things

  1450. on the calendar

1451. to try to enable that

  1452. and try to

  1453. provide opportunities

  1454. for us to pray

  1455. individually

  1456. and corporately

  1457. together as a church.

  1458. church.

  1459. But I would love

  1460. to call us

  1461. into an intentional

  1462. season of prayer

  1463. at First Baptist

  1464. Henrietta.

  1465. So would you,

  1466. with heads bowed

  1467. and eyes closed

  1468. in this moment,

  1469. would you start

  1470. that right now?

  1471. All of us together,

  1472. would we purpose

  1473. in our hearts

  1474. and say,

  1475. God,

  1476. maybe my prayer life

1477. is better than it's been

  1478. in a long time?

  1479. Or maybe it's suffering.

  1480. Maybe I'm not praying

  1481. anywhere near

1482. as much as I should.

  1483. Regardless of where

  1484. you find yourself

  1485. right now,

1486. none of us are praying

  1487. as we ought to.

  1488. So would you take

  1489. a moment

  1490. in this quiet time

  1491. and ask God

  1492. to remind you

  1493. frequently

  1494. throughout the day

  1495. to turn to him

  1496. in prayer?

  1497. And then would you

  1498. take an extra step

  1499. and say,

  1500. God,

  1501. help me to schedule

  1502. a time

  1503. to pray.

  1504. Y'all,

  1505. I don't know about you,

  1506. but if I don't schedule

  1507. something,

  1508. it's probably not

  1509. going to get done.

1510. You can talk to Joy

  1511. or Sarah

  1512. or any member

  1513. of the staff

  1514. and they'll tell you

  1515. if I don't put it

  1516. on my calendar,

1517. I'm going to forget it.

  1518. Part of it.

1519. Maybe you're like that too.

  1520. Whatever it takes

  1521. for you,

  1522. if it's putting it

  1523. on a calendar

  1524. on your phone

1525. or on a paper calendar

1526. or writing a sticky note

  1527. on your mirror,

  1528. whatever it takes

  1529. for you,

1530. would you find a time

  1531. that you can schedule

  1532. to prayer?

  1533. Family prayer

  1534. is important.

  1535. Praying with best friends

  1536. is important.

  1537. But private,

  1538. individual,

  1539. one-on-one time

  1540. with God

  1541. is irreplaceable.

  1542. you can't replace

  1543. that.

  1544. That's where God

  1545. speaks to us

  1546. in ways that

  1547. we'll never

  1548. otherwise hear.

  1549. That's where God

  1550. opens His arms

  1551. and holds us close

  1552. and gives us

  1553. that peace

  1554. when we stop

  1555. and slow down

  1556. and pray.

  1557. That's where God

  1558. reveals His great

  1559. purpose to us.

  1560. So if you're struggling

  1561. a little bit,

  1562. whatever that is,

  1563. would you lay it

  1564. on Jesus

  1565. in prayer?

  1566. God,

  1567. right now,

  1568. would you work

  1569. in your church?

  1570. Would you work

  1571. in our hearts?

  1572. What a difference

  1573. could be made

  1574. in Henrietta,

  1575. Texas,

  1576. and beyond

  1577. if our church

  1578. was a church

  1579. committed to prayer?

  1580. Show us what steps

  1581. we need to take,

  1582. God,

  1583. in our own lives

  1584. and together

  1585. as a church.

1586. We'll give you the glory

  1587. of God.

  1588. Amen.

  1589. Amen.

  1590. Amen.

  1591. Amen.

  1592. Amen.

  1593. Amen.

  1594. Amen.

  1595. Amen.

  1596. Amen.

  1597. Amen.

  1598. Amen.

  1599. Amen.

  1600. Amen.

  1601. Amen.

  1602. Amen.

  1603. Amen.

  1604. Amen.

  1605. Amen.
