  1. Well, amen. I want to thank the choir, the combined adult and youth choirs for that wonderful

  2. song, and that really should carry us forward as a church. God, we do believe. He can do

  3. the impossible. God can do whatever he wants with our church, and we are excited to see

  4. what that is in the future. Thanks, buddy. I might need that. Appreciate that. Brought

  5. me by Bible. Very good. Thank you, man. All right. We are going to take a turn from the

  6. last few months where we've been in the book of Ephesians, and I invite you to turn over

  7. to the gospel of Matthew. Matthew, if you would, chapter 6. Mentioned it a little bit at the

  8. end of the service last Sunday, I truly believe that God is leading our church into a season

  9. of prayer. That does not just represent a sermon series, though there will be sermon series

  10. themed on prayer, and we're beginning one today. But I truly believe that our church as a whole,

  11. individually and corporately together, is being called by God into an actual season where we

  12. need to commit ourselves personally and united as a church in the effort, the discipline of prayer.

  13. So I ask that you would go home and you would search your own heart, and then you would search

  14. your calendar, and try to find moments where you can literally schedule dedicated prayer time.

  15. We're going to be talking about that more in the weeks to come, and try to provide opportunities

  16. and pathways to do that, both individually and together as a church. But let's begin this season

  17. of prayer by diving into the pattern that God laid out for us to pray. So Matthew, chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  18. we read about the Lord's Prayer. This series, this first series in our season of prayer,

  19. is called Talking with God. And we start off by talking about the Lord's Prayer. Would you go

  20. ahead and advance me to the next slide? This thing isn't cooperating yet this morning. There we go,

  21. thank you. A lot of it is done by the Bible exposition commentary, and then over the next few weeks,

  22. we will be covering Matthew, chapter 6, verses 5 through 15. Matthew 6, 5 through 15. Let me say this

    Matthew 6:5–15

  23. about the Lord's Prayer. The Lord's Prayer is less of a prescription and more of a pattern. You

  24. understand what we mean by that? It wasn't God so much saying, this is how you have to pray, and if you

  25. pray these words, then you'll get to God. That wasn't at all what he was saying. Instead, he was giving

  26. us a pattern by which we can pray. There we go. It advanced this time, so I think we got it working.

  27. Matthew 6, 5 through 8, is the first section of this passage that we'll cover this morning,

  28. and then we'll get into the actual content of the Lord's Prayer next week. So let's begin

  29. in Matthew, chapter 6, verse 5. If you're able to join us in standing as we read the Word of God,

    Matthew 6:5

  30. would you do that now? Matthew chapter 6, and verse 5. Whenever you pray, you must not be like the

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  31. hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen

  32. by people. Truly, I tell you, they have their reward. But when you pray, go into your private room,

  33. shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret

  34. will reward you. When you pray, don't babble like the Gentiles, since they imagine they'll be heard

  35. for their many words. Don't be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you

  36. ask Him. God, we know that you do know exactly what we need even before we ask. We know that you've

  37. called us to pray. You've called us to communicate with you, just to talk with you, God.

  38. That is sometimes an intimidating thing. It's sometimes an uncertain thing. We thank you for

  39. your scriptures that enlighten how we can do that. I pray that you would speak to us by your Holy Spirit

  40. in this moment. It's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen. You may be seated. Thanks for standing.

  41. I want to draw your attention back to verse 5. Back to verse 5. Whenever you pray, Jesus is teaching us,

  42. don't be like the hypocrites. Well, who was He talking about? He was talking about the Pharisees

  43. back in the day, the great religious leaders in the Jewish tradition. At that moment in time,

  44. the Pharisees kind of held the keys to the Jewish faith. And in public and in their synagogues or

  45. their types of churches, they would often pray loudly and proudly for everybody to hear.

  46. So Jesus is using them as a direct example of how not to pray. Now, don't raise your hand and don't

  47. shout out anybody's name, but have you ever seen somebody who prayed and it just seemed like they were

  48. doing it to get attention? I have. I really hope I haven't been that guy before, but we've all seen

  49. that kind of person probably. It's like, are you doing this sincerely? Are you really talking to God

  50. right now? Or are you just talking in front of others? Well, it's interesting because, well, you know

  51. what? It was working and now it's not. So would you mind taking me to the next slide? Hippocrates,

  52. the word we get right here in Matthew 6 and verse 5, don't be like the hypocrites. Hippocrates is that

  53. Greek word there. And from that word, we get the idea of actor or stage player. Isn't that interesting?

  54. How many times when you and I prayed, do we feel like maybe we're just acting? Maybe we're just playing

  55. on a stage. We're doing it. We're putting on a performance for the benefit of those around us.

  56. And we're not really, truly communicating with God out of dependence on God.

  57. So that is what Jesus is warning against. Look over in Luke 18, if you would. Luke chapter 18.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  58. I didn't put it on the screen. I figured we could just turn in our Bibles. Luke 18, verses 9 through 14.

    Luke 18:9–14

  59. Just a couple of books over from Matthew.

  60. Luke chapter 18, beginning in verse 9.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  61. Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in themselves,

  62. that they were righteous and looked down on everyone else. Know anybody like that?

  63. Trusted in yourself that you're righteous and you look down on everybody else?

  64. So he tells this story to make this point.

  65. Two men, verse 10, went up to the temple to pray.

  66. One was a Pharisee. The other was a tax collector.

  67. Now pause for a minute. Anybody know a famous tax collector in the Bible?

  68. Yeah, what do you think? Matthew, that's right.

  69. Matthew was a tax collector. Now that doesn't mean that this story is based on Matthew's life.

  70. However, we see from the life of Matthew, and we see from studying culture in that time,

  71. tax collector was a hated position.

  72. Now you had the protection of the government.

  73. It was a powerful position.

  74. You probably accumulated wealth.

  75. However, the everyday people hated you because you were collecting the taxes from them.

  76. And more than likely, you were crooked.

  77. More than likely, you were a dishonest person.

  78. So this was not a good guy, okay?

  79. So we've got a Pharisee, the pinnacle of the religious world,

  80. and then we've got a tax collector,

  81. kind of the bottom of the non-religious world, right?

  82. So two very distinct, different people.

  83. One a Pharisee, the other a tax collector, went up to the temple to pray.

  84. Verse 11, the Pharisee was standing and praying like this about himself.

  85. God, I thank you that I'm not like these other people.

  86. Greedy, unrighteous, adulterers.

  87. And then he even says it, right?

  88. You kind of knew who he was talking about, but then he says,

  89. or even like this tax collector over here.

  90. I fast twice a week.

  91. I give a tenth of everything I get.

  92. And I imagine he goes on and on and pontificates about how great he is

  93. in his prayer, talking to God, right?

  94. Verse 13, however, the tax collector, standing far off,

  95. would not even raise his eyes to heaven,

  96. but kept striking his chest and saying,

  97. God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

  98. I tell you, this one went down to his house justified,

  99. rather than the other,

  100. because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,

  101. but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.

  102. You understand there's a difference here?

  103. One was putting on a show.

  104. He was a hypocrite, wasn't he?

  105. He was playing a part.

  106. He was a stage player in that moment.

  107. The other one knew the truth about himself.

  108. He had humbled himself before God,

  109. and he couldn't even lift his eyes to heaven.

  110. The only difference between those two men

  111. is one knew the truth about himself,

  112. and the other one didn't.

  113. But they were both rotten to the core.

  114. But one had the faith to humble himself before God

  115. and cry out to God for mercy.

  116. Well, the Bible says he found mercy.

  117. He found justification in that moment.

  118. So, Hippocrates, do you pray?

  119. When you pray, do you pray more as an actor?

  120. Are you acting?

  121. Are you playing a part?

  122. Or are you crying out like that tax collector did?

  123. Let's go back to verse 6.

  124. Matthew 6 and verse 6.

  125. When you pray, go into your private room.

  126. Shut your door.

  127. Pray to your father who is in secret.

  128. So, prayer is personal.

  129. Prayer is personal.

  130. That's what we can glean from this.

  131. Now, this doesn't mean that the only time

  132. that it's appropriate to pray

  133. is when you're by yourself.

  134. If that were true, then Jesus would have done wrong,

  135. and many others throughout the New Testament

  136. would have done wrong

  137. when they prayed in public,

  138. prayed in front of people.

  139. We see that time and time again.

  140. So, it's not exclusively that you must pray in private,

  141. but prayer is a private thing.

  142. It's a personal thing.

  143. We must understand that about prayer.

  144. Luke chapter 5.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  145. Back in Luke again, but earlier in the book.

  146. Luke chapter 5 and verse 16.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  147. Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness to pray.

  148. So, we see Jesus actually modeling this.

  149. Jesus would often withdraw to deserted places

  150. or to the wilderness and pray.

  151. He would get away.

  152. How many of you guys have watched The Chosen?

  153. Either up here at church,

  154. or maybe you've gone to the theater,

  155. you've watched it at home on one of the streaming apps.

  156. By the way, I can't recommend that show enough.

  157. Outstanding.

  158. Now, it is not a one-for-one account

  159. of the biblical narrative.

  160. They took artistic license

  161. and added on some things to the story.

  162. It is simply meant to portray the life of Jesus

  163. and his dealings with his disciples

  164. as it may have happened

  165. in accordance with the scripture,

  166. and then adding on some extra details

  167. and backstories and that kind of thing.

  168. And they make that clear.

  169. This is really meant to drive you to the text

  170. rather than see it as a replacement for the text.

  171. There is no replacement for the word of God.

  172. However, The Chosen did an excellent job

  173. in portraying how often Jesus would just disappear.

  174. His disciples wouldn't know where he was.

  175. People might come asking,

  176. where's your master?

  177. Where's your rabbi?

  178. And they wouldn't know where he was.

  179. He's off praying somewhere.

  180. And the Bible teaches us that Jesus often did that.

  181. Why?

  182. Because he needed to commune with his father.

  183. If the son of God needed to commune with his father

  184. privately by himself,

  185. how much more do you think you and I need to?

  186. We're not God.

  187. We're not divine.

  188. All of our life source runs from him.

  189. We will be spiritually dead inside

  190. if we don't continually go back to that well

  191. of talking to God.

  192. Prayer is a deeply personal thing.

  193. When it's not personal,

  194. it becomes impersonal.

  195. It becomes public.

  196. It becomes a religious right.

  197. It becomes a tradition that we feel like we should do.

  198. But it's not personally meaningful to us.

  199. So prayer is personal.

  200. Back in verse 1 of Matthew 6,

  201. it gives us some admonishment about that.

  202. Be careful not to practice your righteousness

  203. in front of others to be seen by them.

  204. Otherwise, you have no reward with your father in heaven.

  205. Why would you have no reward?

  206. Because you were not doing it for heavenly gain.

  207. You weren't doing it for God.

  208. You were simply doing it for the approval of man

  209. and you already got it.

  210. So that reward is done.

  211. There is no other reward left for you.

  212. So he says,

  213. be careful not to practice your righteousness.

  214. And one of these chief ways would be prayer

  215. in front of others just to be seen by them.

  216. Now, should we live out a life of testimony

  217. and faith in God?

  218. Absolutely.

  219. We should.

  220. But that should never be the motivation

  221. is to gain praise from others

  222. or to just be seen by them

  223. because prayer is a personal thing.

  224. Then,

  225. I want to remind you of this.

  226. The heart of the one praying

  227. is more important than the style of the prayer.

  228. We sang that song this morning, didn't we?

  229. Heart of worship.

  230. I was back there getting ready for baptism,

  231. but I thought I heard it playing out here.

  232. I'm coming back to the heart of worship

  233. because it's all about him.

  234. Listen,

  235. the heart of the one praying

  236. is more important than the style of the prayer.

  237. That tax collector,

  238. when he poured out his heart to God,

  239. he might not have gotten all the words right.

  240. He might have not gotten everything

  241. theologically and doctrinally straightened up

  242. and lined up just how it should be

  243. or how they would teach it in seminary.

  244. But his heart was in the right place

  245. and God blessed it.

  246. Meanwhile,

  247. the Pharisee,

  248. who almost assuredly got everything in order

  249. as it should be theologically

  250. and according to the Old Testament

  251. that he had studied

  252. and knew practically by heart,

  253. he would have gotten all his ducks in a row,

  254. but his heart was so far from God.

  255. Y'all,

  256. I'm afraid that that is a microcosm

  257. of our churches today

  258. and we might not be exempt from that.

  259. It's that we have long-time Christians

  260. who can tell you everything

  261. about the Bible,

  262. everything about God,

  263. but their hearts

  264. are so far removed

  265. from God.

  266. The heart of the one praying

  267. is more important

  268. than the style of the prayer.

  269. Why is that?

  270. Because in God's kingdom,

  271. you look through these parables

  272. where Jesus says

  273. the kingdom of God is like this.

  274. A sower went out to sow seed.

  275. A kingdom of God is like this.

  276. It's the shepherd who left the 99

  277. to go hunt down the one.

  278. Over and over again,

  279. in God's kingdom,

  280. relationship is greater than rules.

  281. The word of God teaches us

  282. this life-changing,

  283. life-transforming difference

  284. between the Old Testament

  285. and the New Testament.

  286. Both are valuable.

  287. Both reveal God to us.

  288. But something happened

  289. when Jesus died on the cross.

  290. The law died.

  291. God's law

  292. was no longer

  293. controlling over us.

  294. The Bible says

  295. what the law could not do,

  296. Jesus did.

  297. The law could never bring us to God.

  298. So plug in

  299. all of your religious rules,

  300. all of your religious expectations,

  301. all the standards

  302. that you think

  303. you and everybody else should meet.

  304. That will never bring you to God.

  305. A relationship with Jesus Christ

  306. must bring you to God.

  307. It's when I get off sidetracked

  308. by all the rules

  309. that Christianity and church

  310. can start to implement

  311. on everybody else.

  312. That's when I get farther away from God.

  313. Now it might look like

  314. I've got my act together.

  315. It might look like

  316. I'm doing really well,

  317. but I know inside

  318. there's a passage in Scripture

  319. that literally says

  320. you're full of dead men's bones.

  321. You look like you're alive

  322. and doing great on the outside

  323. and inside you're dead.

  324. And I know

  325. when I start getting like that.

  326. And God's got to get back to me

  327. and say

  328. it's about prayer.

  329. It's about me.

  330. It's about your relationship with me.

  331. It's about my love for you

  332. that I can

  333. see born in your heart

  334. and then you can show out

  335. and shine out

  336. to others around you.

  337. That is what will change

  338. your life,

  339. your kid's life,

  340. your wife's life,

  341. your husband's life.

  342. That's what will do it

  343. every time.

  344. So relationship

  345. is far greater

  346. than the rules.

  347. You might have been

  348. following Jesus' rules.

  349. You might have been following

  350. the rules of the Bible

  351. most of your life.

  352. There's another one

  353. who did that.

  354. His name was Nicodemus.

  355. But he couldn't seem

  356. to figure out

  357. that Jesus was the answer,

  358. not the rules.

  359. Now,

  360. let's go to verse 7.

  361. When you pray,

  362. don't babble

  363. like the Gentiles.

  364. What's he talking about?

  365. Well,

  366. there were these Gentiles

  367. who would pray

  368. to their false god.

  369. What's a Gentile?

  370. Not a Jew, right?

  371. Everybody who's not a Jew.

  372. So,

  373. if there's any Jews

  374. in the room,

  375. the rest of us

  376. are Gentiles,

  377. alright?

  378. So,

  379. often in that day,

  380. you would have

  381. these Gentiles

  382. who are worshiping

  383. their false gods

  384. and their MO,

  385. their modus operandi

  386. is that they would

  387. just try to use

  388. as many words

  389. as possible

  390. because the more

  391. they would pray,

  392. the more words,

  393. the more flowery language

  394. that they would use

  395. when they pray,

  396. they would feel like

  397. their false gods

  398. were honored by that

  399. and their lives

  400. would be blessed.

  401. So,

  402. this is a direct reference

  403. to that.

  404. Well,

  405. that still happens today,

  406. doesn't it?

  407. That still happens today.

  408. And they feel like

  409. as long as they were

  410. using a bunch of words

  411. and praying

  412. as much as they could

  413. and as often as they could

  414. to their gods,

  415. then their gods

  416. would give them

  417. whatever they wanted.

  418. Prayer does not

  419. work like that.

  420. Now,

  421. I used to live in Nevada

  422. and we literally

  423. had slot machines

  424. everywhere,

  425. okay?

  426. Now,

  427. we didn't

  428. in our house,

  429. okay?

  430. But,

  431. but everywhere you went,

  432. I mean,

  433. you go to the gas station,

  434. there's a slot,

  435. a few slot machines

  436. right up there by the door.

  437. You go to the grocery store,

  438. they're right over there

  439. by the checkout counter.

  440. I mean,

  441. everywhere you go,

  442. there were slot machines

  443. in the state of Nevada.

  444. When God brought us

  445. back home to Texas,

  446. I was so grateful

  447. to go to Brookshire's

  448. and not see a slot machine.

  449. So,

  450. that was nice.

  451. Prayer is not

  452. a slot machine.

  453. I'm not going to ask

  454. for a show of hands

  455. of how many of you

  456. have played a slot machine

  457. before,

  458. okay?

  459. Look,

  460. if you go off

  461. and do that,

  462. it's your business

  463. between you and God,

  464. that's fine.

  465. But listen,

  466. prayer does not

  467. work like that.

  468. You don't just

  469. put something in

  470. and expect to get

  471. something out.

  472. You don't just put in

  473. words and get out

  474. answers,

  475. okay?

  476. Prayer is a meaningful

  477. communication

  478. with the God

  479. of the universe.

  480. The God

  481. who knows so much

  482. more than you do.

  483. The God

  484. who knows so much

  485. more than we do.

  486. We just bring

  487. our requests to Him

  488. and then we sit back

  489. in trust

  490. and faith

  491. believing He will act

  492. according to what

  493. He knows is best.

  494. We might get

  495. what we ask for

  496. or we might get

  497. something totally

  498. different than what

  499. we ask for

  500. because God knew

  501. that's what we needed.

  502. We might ask for

  503. the trial,

  504. the struggle,

  505. to be over

  506. and God might

  507. want to take us

  508. through it a little

  509. bit more.

  510. There might be

  511. all kinds of ways

  512. that God intends

  513. to answer your prayer

  514. but it will never be

  515. like pulling a slot

  516. machine.

  517. Okay God,

  518. I need a new truck.

  519. Give me a new truck.

  520. I prayed for it.

  521. Prayer doesn't work

  522. like that.

  523. And then in verse 8,

  524. don't be like them.

  525. Your Father knows

  526. the things you need

  527. before you ask Him.

  528. Prayer releases

  529. the pressure.

  530. How great is that?

  531. Now I will ask you

  532. to raise your hand

  533. on this one.

  534. How many of you

  535. felt pressure

  536. at some point

  537. this last week?

  538. How many felt

  539. some pressure?

  540. For those of you

  541. who didn't,

  542. I need you to like

  543. talk to me

  544. after the service

  545. because I felt

  546. a lot of pressure

  547. this last week

  548. at different moments.

  549. That is amazing.

  550. Y'all have cracked

  551. the code.

  552. Look,

  553. we are all

  554. under pressure,

  555. right?

  556. We are.

  557. Some of you

  558. were like,

  559. don't pressure me

  560. into raising my hand.

  561. I feel pressure

  562. right now.

  563. Prayer releases

  564. the pressure.

  565. It's not up to you.

  566. It's up to God.

  567. It is simply up to you

  568. to take it to God

  569. because the good news is

  570. God already knows

  571. what you need

  572. before you ask.

  573. He knows the solution

  574. before you bring Him

  575. the problem.

  576. But He still wants you

  577. to bring Him

  578. the problem.

  579. What kind of a relationship

  580. would I have

  581. with my two little boys

  582. down here

  583. if I just met

  584. all their needs

  585. and never wanted them

  586. to ask me for anything?

  587. How one-sided

  588. of a relationship

  589. would that be?

  590. Why are you asking me

  591. for this?

  592. Like,

  593. I don't do enough

  594. for you?

  595. Of course I want them

  596. to ask me for things.

  597. Now,

  598. I'm not always

  599. going to give them

  600. what they ask for.

  601. You want nacho cheese

  602. Doritos for breakfast?

  603. No,

  604. you can't have that.

  605. I mean,

  606. it sounds good to me too,

  607. but no.

  608. No.

  609. So,

  610. I'm going to give them

  611. what I know

  612. they should have

  613. and would be best

  614. for them,

  615. but I still want them

  616. to come keep asking me

  617. for things.

  618. You want donuts

  619. this morning?

  620. No,

  621. we're not going

  622. to go get donuts.

  623. However,

  624. on Bo's birthday,

  625. which is today,

  626. we did go get donuts.

  627. It's a chocolate bar.

  628. That's his thing.

  629. Thanks.

  630. But prayer releases

  631. the pressure.

  632. You don't have to ask

  633. just the right thing.

  634. You don't have to say

  635. just the right thing.

  636. Now,

  637. look,

  638. if you ask amiss,

  639. if you ask the wrong way,

  640. if you ask incorrectly,

  641. God's not going to

  642. just give you that.

  643. Remember,

  644. prayer's not a slot machine.

  645. You don't just put in coins

  646. and get out reward.

  647. Just because you ask for it

  648. doesn't mean that God's,

  649. oh,

  650. you shouldn't have asked for that.

  651. Here it comes.

  652. How many of you guys

  653. have seen the whole genie thing

  654. where you get three wishes,

  655. right?

  656. And if you say it the wrong way,

  657. you know,

  658. I want a million bucks.

  659. So you get a million deer bucks.

  660. I should have specified

  661. what kind of bucks you wanted.

  662. God knows what we need.

  663. He knows what we're asking for.

  664. He knows our heart.

  665. He knows us better

  666. than we know ourselves.

  667. And he knows his will for us.

  668. He knows where he wants to take us.

  669. So that's the good news.

  670. Prayer releases the pressure.

  671. God,

  672. I'm giving this to you.

  673. Now,

  674. James 4, 3,

  675. you ask and you don't receive

  676. because you ask with wrong motives

  677. so that you may spend it

  678. on your pleasures.

  679. There is this aspect of it.

  680. If you're asking

  681. not out of a motive

  682. to please God,

  683. not out of a motive

  684. to walk in God's will,

  685. not out of a motive

  686. to recognize

  687. that you might have been

  688. going the wrong way

  689. and you want to course correct

  690. and you want to get back

  691. on the following Jesus path,

  692. right?

  693. If that's not the motive,

  694. then you don't receive

  695. what you're asking for

  696. because you're asking

  697. out of wrong motives.

  698. God,

  699. I want you to make me

  700. succeed at work

  701. so I can take the dream vacation

  702. that I always wanted

  703. and I can spend all my time

  704. and energy and money

  705. on myself

  706. and my pleasures.

  707. Well,

  708. God may not provide that for you.

  709. But you say,

  710. God,

  711. I really need a raise at work

  712. because the things

  713. that we could do

  714. with that extra money

  715. increase our giving

  716. to your work at the church

  717. and increase what we do

  718. for other people

  719. that don't have

  720. what they need.

  721. God,

  722. I want you to take

  723. any additional income

  724. that I receive

  725. and do what you want with it.

  726. Maybe God will do that for you.

  727. That's up to Him.

  728. But prayer releases

  729. the pressure

  730. if your motivations

  731. are in line with God.

  732. Ephesians 3 and verse 20.

  733. We just finished

  734. our study of Ephesians

  735. but back in the middle

  736. of the book,

  737. verse 20 of chapter 3,

  738. all glory to God

  739. who is able

  740. through His mighty power

  741. at work within us

  742. to accomplish

  743. infinitely more

  744. than we might ask

  745. or think.

  746. You don't always have to ask

  747. for the right thing.

  748. I've heard people say,

  749. I'm not very good at praying.

  750. What does that mean?

  751. Who's good at praying?

  752. If you pray

  753. sincerely,

  754. you're good at praying.

  755. I'm talking to God.

  756. There's no expectations

  757. or standard

  758. that you have to meet.

  759. He can accomplish

  760. so much more

  761. than you could ever ask

  762. or think.

  763. By the way,

  764. if there's any teenagers

  765. hanging in here,

  766. they're missing you

  767. in the back right now

  768. so y'all need to slip out

  769. if there's any

  770. that haven't done that yet.

  771. Finally,

  772. I might need you

  773. to take me to the next one.

  774. It's not working again.

  775. Y'all,

  776. we're going to get

  777. this thing figured out,

  778. all right?

  779. Sometimes it does,

  780. sometimes it doesn't.

  781. God's sovereignty

  782. does not change

  783. our need to pray.

  784. Have you ever thought

  785. this before?

  786. Well,

  787. if God is sovereign

  788. and God knows everything

  789. that's going to happen,

  790. then how does my prayer

  791. change things?

  792. Anybody ever thought that?

  793. Can my prayer

  794. change God's will

  795. or God's mind?

  796. Does it make any difference

  797. at all?

  798. Let me remind you,

  799. God's sovereignty

  800. does not change

  801. our need to pray.

  802. God still wants you

  803. to ask

  804. even though

  805. He already knows

  806. the outcome.

  807. That's just like

  808. when we put our faith

  809. in Jesus for salvation.

  810. The Bible teaches

  811. that God knows

  812. all the ones

  813. who are going

  814. to turn to Him

  815. and repent of their sin

  816. and be saved.

  817. He already knows

  818. who's going

  819. to do that.

  820. But He goes ahead

  821. and wants us

  822. to make that decision.

  823. He calls us

  824. to do that.

  825. He draws us

  826. to Himself.

  827. And it's the same thing,

  828. it's the same principle

  829. as we continue

  830. through our life

  831. with Him in prayer.

  832. God already knows

  833. what's going to happen,

  834. but just like

  835. a good father

  836. with His children,

  837. He wants that child

  838. to go ahead

  839. and ask,

  840. am I going

  841. to supply your needs?

  842. Absolutely I will.

  843. Am I going

  844. to supply your needs

  845. whether you ask

  846. or not?

  847. Yes,

  848. because I love you

  849. and I care for you.

  850. But I want you

  851. to go ahead and ask.

  852. If you don't ask,

  853. then you don't receive

  854. my full blessings

  855. of that relationship.

  856. Do you understand?

  857. It's not God

  858. holding dangling blessings

  859. out in front of you.

  860. You better pray more

  861. so you can get these.

  862. It's having that relationship

  863. with Him

  864. that comes

  865. from constant communication.

  866. If you and your wife

  867. never talk,

  868. you probably don't have

  869. a thriving relationship,

  870. right?

  871. You might have learned

  872. how to coexist

  873. with each other,

  874. but you probably

  875. don't have

  876. a thriving relationship.

  877. And it's the same way

  878. with God.

  879. If we don't talk to Him,

  880. then we're just familiar

  881. with who He is.

  882. We might have filled

  883. our heads

  884. with a lot of facts

  885. about Him

  886. and information,

  887. but we don't personally

  888. get to call Him friend

  889. or personally get to call Him

  890. our dear close father

  891. because we don't have

  892. that kind of relationship

  893. with Him.

  894. But that's not His fault.

  895. He wants it.

  896. He wrote a love letter

  897. to you right here

  898. and He said,

  899. talk to me,

  900. pray,

  901. talk with me,

  902. communicate with me

  903. so He can accomplish

  904. so much more

  905. than you or I

  906. could ever ask

  907. or think.

  908. I want to leave you

  909. with this quote.

  910. Prayer is not about

  911. changing God,

  912. but it's being willing

  913. to let God change us.

  914. Prayer is not about

  915. changing God.

  916. Man, God's never

  917. going to change

  918. and I thank God for that.

  919. But prayer is being willing

  920. to let God change me.

  921. It's taking it to Him.

  922. Saying, God,

  923. I need you to work here.

  924. I need you to work.

  925. Prayer drives us to God

  926. through a cycle

  927. of depending on Him

  928. and being grateful for Him.

  929. Dependence and gratitude

  930. over and over again.

  931. It's not just asking Him

  932. for things

  933. and waiting for them

  934. to show up at your door

  935. like an Amazon package.

  936. That's not what prayer is.

  937. Prayer is a cycle

  938. of dependence on God

  939. for everything.

  940. Emotional dependence,

  941. material dependence,

  942. spiritual dependence,

  943. mental dependence,

  944. dependence for your health.

  945. In every way,

  946. holistically,

  947. across the board,

  948. we become dependent

  949. on God

  950. because He will always supply.

  951. He will always be there.

  952. And then we get to send Him

  953. all the gratitude

  954. that comes from that.

  955. And then the last slide,

  956. if you would,

  957. what's our takeaway?

  958. Am I praying more

  959. for show

  960. or from personal dependence

  961. on God?

  962. That's our takeaway today.

  963. Am I praying more

  964. for show

  965. or from personal dependence

  966. on God?

  967. Would you bow your heads with me?

  968. Can we ask that question

  969. right now?

  970. Maybe don't close up the Bible

  971. and put everything away

  972. right in this moment,

  973. but just for about 60 seconds or so,

  974. just a moment of quietness,

  975. a moment of silence

  976. and stillness

  977. that says,

  978. God,

  979. do I talk with you

  980. more for the benefit

  981. of those around me

  982. or from personal dependence

  983. on you?

  984. There's a song that says,

  985. Lord, I need you.

  986. Oh, I need you.

  987. Every hour,

  988. I need you.

  989. You're my one defense.

  990. You're my righteousness.

  991. Oh, God,

  992. how I need you.

  993. There's another song

  994. that says,

  995. every hour,

  996. I need thee.

  997. Oh, bless me now,

  998. my Savior,

  999. I come to thee.

  1000. God desires us

  1001. to come to him

  1002. time and time again

  1003. throughout the day.

1004. Never hang up the phone

  1005. with our willing,

  1006. always available,

  1007. Lord Jesus Christ.

1008. God, I ask that you would

  1009. work in each heart

  1010. this morning.

  1011. Draw us to yourself.

  1012. May the takeaway

  1013. from today

  1014. be that so many

  1015. in this room

  1016. go home

  1017. and carve out

  1018. more time

  1019. to talk with you.

  1020. There's nothing

  1021. the devil wants

  1022. to do more

  1023. than to distract us

  1024. from our lifeline

  1025. of prayer.

  1026. There's nothing

  1027. that our flesh

  1028. resists more

  1029. than the access

  1030. to the Holy Spirit

  1031. that we get

  1032. when we pray.

  1033. I pray

  1034. that you'd

  1035. convict each heart

1036. and it's in Jesus' name

  1037. we pray.

  1038. Amen.

  1039. Amen.

  1040. Thank you.
