  1. All right, if you would take the Word of God with me and turn to Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  2. Matthew chapter 6. We've heard a word quite a bit today in songs that we have sung today.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  3. It's tied closely to the events that we celebrate on Palm Sunday.

  4. Can anybody tell me what that word is?

  5. Thank you. I heard it down here. Hosanna. Hosanna.

  6. What do we mean by Hosanna? What does that word mean?

  7. Sometimes it's easy to come to church, and if you didn't maybe grow up in church,

  8. or you're not used to some of the words you hear, there's a church lingo that you kind of have to learn.

  9. And we want to try to avoid making it difficult, if possible, for those who maybe aren't familiar with all the terminology.

  10. But along the way, it's helpful to pick up some of those terms.

  11. And what we mean by Hosanna is, Lord, save us.

  12. It's a term of praise.

  13. And when Jesus came into the city of Jerusalem shortly before his crucifixion, Passion Week,

  14. they shouted out the word Hosanna.

  15. Crowds thronged the streets as he's riding in on the donkey accompanied by his disciples.

  16. And the crowd thronged the streets because his reputation had preceded him.

  17. And they saw him as their Messiah, as their deliverer, many of those people.

  18. And so they were calling on him to deliver them.

  19. Likely what those people were calling on him to do was deliver them from Rome.

  20. Deliver them from Roman oppression.

  21. Restore to them their great and mighty kingdom.

  22. And that's what they were hoping their Messiah would do.

  23. But Jesus came not to set up a kingdom on this earth, to set up a heavenly kingdom.

  24. And to populate it with the souls of men.

  25. Forgive them for their transgressions.

  26. And that is what Jesus came to do.

  27. But everyone saw him as the deliverer.

  28. So they were asking him, Lord, save us.

  29. Deliver us.

  30. And that's what they meant by Hosanna.

  31. If you're in Matthew chapter 6, and you're able and willing, would you join me in standing?

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  32. And let's read one verse today.

  33. Verse 13.

  34. Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  35. Do not bring us into temptation.

  36. But deliver us from the evil one.

  37. Would you say those two words with me?

  38. Deliver us.

  39. Ready?

  40. Deliver us.

  41. Isn't that interesting that on Palm Sunday, as we say the word Hosanna over and over,

  42. and we've got it up here on our banners, Hosanna, God deliver us.

  43. That coincides with the last verse of what we call the Lord's Prayer that we've been studying

  44. for the last several weeks.

  45. Lord, deliver us from evil.

  46. Would you pray with me?

  47. God, I pray that you would speak to us from your word this morning.

  48. I pray that there's nothing that you have for someone that they would miss from your word.

  49. I pray that it would be not my thinking, my words, but it would be your will that is imparted

  50. unto every heart today.

  51. For someone who does not know you, let them start that relationship with you today.

  52. In Jesus' name we pray.

  53. Amen.

  54. You may be seated.

  55. We've been in our series on the Lord's Prayer.

  56. Carson, would you advance this for me?

  57. It's not, there we go.

  58. Got it.

  59. I think we got it back.

  60. I always want to remind you, some of the things you hear came from my mind.

  61. Some of them came from different authors, and my kind of primary source is this Bible

  62. exposition commentary by Warren Wiersbe.

  63. We've been in Matthew chapter 6, verses 5 through 13.

    Matthew 6:5–13

  64. We've been talking about the Lord's Prayer.

  65. Again, this is not a you must pray these words.

  66. It's less of a prescription and more of a pattern.

  67. The first section of the Lord's Prayer was God-focused petitions, and then this second section,

  68. that we're concluding today, has been life-focused petitions.

  69. So, as we read in Matthew 6, 13, Lord, deliver us from evil.

  70. The theme for today is talking about temptation and deliverance.

  71. Now, why are you looking at a picture of Hot Wheels cars right now?

  72. To be fair, there's a matchbox in there, too.

  73. All right?

  74. Why are you looking at toy cars?

  75. In case you couldn't tell, that's what that is.

  76. Anybody want to take a guess what that store is?

  77. Not my two boys up front.

  78. Cadran, what do you think?

  79. Oh, so close.

  80. So close.

  81. Aubrey?

  82. There you go.

  83. There you go.

  84. Dollar Tree.

  85. You got the dollar right.

  86. That is a Dollar Tree.

  87. Now, boys, why did I show a picture of Dollar Tree Hot Wheels?

  88. Yes, right down front.

  89. Tell me why.

  90. Yeah, I did say that I would do that.

  91. That's true.

  92. I told you I was going to do this.

  93. You're right.

  94. It's because every time we go in a Dollar Tree, me and my boys, we are each going to buy at least one Hot Wheels car.

  95. They used to be a dollar.

  96. Now they're $1.25.

  97. Stinking inflation.

  98. Anyway.

  99. But it's still the best price you can get on these Hot Wheels cars.

  100. Unless maybe you can find a bulk price somewhere, but then you don't know what you're getting.

  101. And, you know.

  102. We have probably compiled just about every Batman-themed Hot Wheels car that they ever made.

  103. And at least recently.

  104. And every time we go in there, we cannot resist the temptation to buy these cars.

  105. Okay?

  106. Now, I've shut down other things usually.

  107. Like we're not just going to go buy a bunch of random stuff for them to take home and use once and then it breaks and throw away.

  108. But these cars, we cannot resist them.

  109. And if you go to our house right now, you walk in the living room, there are three piles of cars waiting on us to play with when we get home.

  110. Because you don't understand how many cars we have and how long this process takes.

  111. Okay?

  112. We've got to, like, play rock, paper, scissors to see who picks first and then who picks second.

  113. And we go through and each select our favorite car.

  114. And compile your armies and then you've got to create a whole scenario.

  115. Anyway, it's a lot of fun.

  116. All right?

  117. If anybody wants to play cars, come to our house this afternoon.

  118. We'll have a good time.

  119. Don't take me up on that, please.

  120. I'm a little under the weather.

  121. You're not going to want to get sick.

  122. All right.

  123. So, we can't resist this particular temptation.

  124. Now, I've never prayed for God to deliver me from this temptation, okay?

  125. I'm perfectly fine with it.

  126. As long as it doesn't completely get out of hand, I guess.

  127. But how about this one?

  128. Anybody ever been down this aisle in the store with little kids?

  129. How many of y'all have purposefully avoided going down this aisle in the store with little kids?

  130. I think that right there, parents avoiding taking their children down this aisle, I think it's biblical, okay?

  131. It is.

  132. It lines up with scripture.

  133. Somehow, someway.

  134. No, Psalm 131.

  135. Watch this.

  136. Lord, set up a guard for my mouth.

  137. Keep watch at the door of my lips.

  138. Do not let my heart turn to any evil thing or perform wicked acts with evildoers.

  139. Wow, that just got dark really fast, didn't it?

  140. Here's the tie-in.

  141. Here's the application.

  142. God, deliver us from evil.

  143. Deliver us from the evil one.

  144. Set a guard for my mouth.

  145. Keep watch at the door of my lips.

  146. In other words, don't take me down the candy aisle because I can't handle it.

  147. Don't take me down the Hot Wheels section at Dollar Tree because I'm going to buy whatever I want there, okay?

  148. There are certain things that tempt us more than we can handle.

  149. And I believe that is why Jesus is teaching us to pray,

  150. Lord, do not bring us into temptation.

  151. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  152. Why would God lead us into temptation?

  153. Why are we even asking that?

  154. Why is Jesus telling us, teaching us, to pray in this way to God,

  155. not to lead us into temptation?

  156. Does God tempt people?

  157. We're going to see in a few passages that he does not.

  158. God absolutely does not bring temptation into our lives.

  159. Does he allow us sometimes to experience temptation?

  160. Yes.

  161. But God is not the author of temptation.

  162. So I really believe what he's teaching us here is that very simple principle that we exercise with our own kids and sometimes ourselves.

  163. We know, you know, maybe you're trying to cut off caffeine or something and so you're not going to go to Starbucks.

  164. Well, I swear I'll just get a hot tea that doesn't have caffeine in it.

  165. No, you won't.

  166. You'll get your favorite coffee drink.

  167. There are certain things that we know are going to be too much for us to handle.

  168. So we're praying, God, keep us from those things.

  169. Don't lead us down the candy aisle.

  170. I love this quote from the author of that commentary series I told you about earlier.

  171. Temptation is Satan's weapon to defeat us.

  172. But it can become God's tool to build us.

  173. That's what the theme is about today.

  174. Temptation and deliverance.

  175. And temptation is going to be something that every single one of us experiences.

  176. God does allow us to repeatedly experience temptation, sometimes in the same area.

  177. And we can either see that as a negative or a positive.

  178. It can be Satan's weapon to defeat us.

  179. It is.

  180. And sometimes he wins that battle.

  181. But it can also become God's tool to build us, to form us, to shape us into his likeness.

  182. So number one, temptation comes from the world, the flesh, and the devil.

  183. Temptation comes from the world, the culture around us.

  184. Remember when Preston up here said a little bit ago,

  185. why do we continue to sin even though we're trying to be like Jesus?

  186. Because, anybody remember?

  187. Because we're used to it.

  188. Yeah.

  189. Because we're born into sin.

  190. Because of our sin nature.

  191. The culture around us is very sinful.

  192. And then our own flesh, that sin nature within us,

  193. undermines the Holy Spirit's working in our lives.

  194. And then the devil, spiritual warfare is very real around us.

  195. And sometimes he will shoot his arrows directly at us.

  196. And so temptation can come from the world, the flesh, and the devil.

  197. Let's look at James chapter 1.

    James 1 chapter mention

  198. James chapter 1.

    James 1 chapter mention

  199. You're going to be turning in your Bibles a little bit today.

  200. So if you wouldn't mind heading toward the back of the book,

  201. toward Revelation, and then turn a few pages back until you find James.

  202. There's five chapters, and we're going to be in chapter 1, verses 12 through 16.

  203. For sake of time, I'm going to go ahead and read while you catch up.

  204. Blessed is the one who endures trials,

  205. because when he has stood the test of time,

  206. when he has stood that test,

  207. he will receive the crown of life

  208. that God has promised to those who love him.

  209. Do you see that?

  210. Blessed is the one who endures trials.

  211. Verse 13.

  212. No one undergoing a trial should say,

  213. I am being tempted by God.

  214. Since God is not tempted by evil,

  215. here we go, ready?

  216. And he himself doesn't tempt anyone.

  217. God is not the one tempting you.

  218. That's the world, the flesh, and the devil.

  219. But each person is tempted when he is drawn away

  220. and enticed by his own evil desire.

  221. Then, after desire has conceived,

  222. it gives birth to sin.

  223. And when sin is fully grown,

  224. it gives birth to death.

  225. Don't be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters.

  226. So that's what I hope we can take away from today.

  227. Don't be deceived by temptation.

  228. Don't be deceived into thinking

  229. you are strong enough

  230. to resist temptation on your own.

  231. You might have resisted it in your mind,

  232. but in reality, it took root in you,

  233. and it will grow up into a kind of fruit

  234. that you never wanted in your life.

  235. So, temptation comes not from God,

  236. but from the world, the flesh, and the devil,

  237. and their goal is to trick you, to deceive you.

  238. How does temptation deceive us?

  239. I love this quote from Rick Warren.

  240. Every temptation is an offer

  241. to doubt God's love and wisdom.

  242. Every kind of temptation that comes into your life,

  243. whether it is sexual, whether it is power,

  244. whether it is money,

  245. whatever kind of temptation comes after you,

  246. that is an offer to doubt God's love and wisdom for you,

  247. saying, God is not enough.

  248. You also need this.

  249. You also need this.

  250. God's word is not true in this area.

  251. It is an offer to doubt God's love and wisdom.

  252. What are the different types of temptation?

  253. How are we tempted?

  254. 1 John 2 and verse 16 tells us everything in the world.

  255. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes,

  256. and the pride of life.

  257. We've got three different types right there.

  258. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes,

  259. and the pride of life comes not from the Father,

  260. but from the world.

  261. Once again, God does not tempt us.

  262. The world, the flesh, and the devil,

  263. it appeals to our sin nature,

  264. and we respond.

  265. So the lust of the flesh,

  266. the lust of the eyes,

  267. and the pride of life.

  268. I found this handy Venn diagram on the internet.

  269. Anybody love a good Venn diagram?

  270. It's awesome, right?

  271. You can see it all kind of come together.

  272. I don't know if this is completely comprehensive,

  273. if this covers every area,

  274. but I thought it was helpful to look at

  275. and kind of get an idea of how this works.

  276. So the lust of the eyes,

  277. they're on the left.

  278. What are we talking about?

  279. What?

  280. Envy, greed, wrath.

  281. These are the things that appeal to our eyes.

  282. We want what somebody else has.

  283. What somebody else has.

  284. We see something that makes us angry.

  285. The lust of the flesh.

  286. Laziness.

  287. Kind of crosses over into that greed.

  288. I want what appeals to me.

  289. Gluttony.

  290. How many of us struggle with gluttony?

  291. Yeah, you and me both.

  292. And then pride of life.

  293. Pride.

  294. Man, that gets every one of us, I think, in this room.

  295. At some point, pride has led you down the wrong path.

  296. Again, gluttony.

  297. Getting everything that I have for myself.

  298. Everything I want.

  299. And then wrath.

  300. And all of it combines into lust.

  301. Lust of the flesh.

  302. Lust of the eyes.

  303. And pride of life.

  304. It is elevating man above God.

  305. That is the sin here.

  306. You understand that God does not, and young people, I want to make sure y'all hear this.

  307. God does not set up a bunch of rules just to have rules.

  308. God is not trying to cramp our style.

  309. Okay?

  310. God's not trying to just make life as unenjoyable as possible for us.

  311. God is making sure that we do not lift ourselves up above him.

  312. And he knows that there is sin in the world.

  313. Because Satan lifted himself up above God.

  314. And he was cast out of heaven.

  315. And so then, in the original sin in the Garden of Eden, that the kids talked about earlier,

  316. that sin was lifting themselves up above God.

  317. It was saying, I know this is what God told us,

  318. but Lucifer appealed to their pride,

  319. and they responded to that.

  320. Because God gave us a choice.

  321. Because he did not make us robots.

  322. Because he gave us that free will,

  323. then we could choose to lift ourselves up above God.

  324. And that ultimately is the root of every sin.

  325. It's saying, I know this is what God says,

  326. but I'm going to go a different way.

  327. There is a conscience in each one of us.

  328. And so often, we resist that conscience.

  329. We go against it.

  330. Even if you haven't heard a teaching on the Word of God,

  331. every man is responsible to obey his Creator.

  332. And every man is born into sin.

  333. And every man has resisted God.

  334. At some point in his life.

  335. Usually many times.

  336. So that lust for life, for power, for pride,

  337. for gaining everything we can possibly compile,

  338. to get ahead, to lift ourselves up,

  339. that does not come from God.

  340. God can lift you up as high as he wants you to go.

  341. But when you scrap and fight to get ahead,

  342. often that comes from a place of pride.

  343. I'm not saying don't work hard in your job.

  344. I'm not saying don't try to do well in school.

  345. I'm not saying don't try to be the best if you're an athlete, etc.

  346. I'm not saying those things.

  347. Certainly, everything that you find to do,

  348. do it with all your might, do it with all your strength.

  349. But what does the Bible teach us?

  350. Do those things to bring glory to God, not yourself.

  351. And that goes completely against the lust of the flesh,

  352. the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.

  353. Matthew, back in Matthew, but toward the end of the book,

  354. Matthew 26, 41,

  355. stay awake and pray so that you don't enter into temptation.

  356. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

  357. You see the setting here?

  358. This is the Garden of Gethsemane,

  359. right before Jesus is crucified,

  360. and he's been praying all night,

  361. and he goes to check on his disciples,

  362. and they've all fallen asleep.

  363. And this happens multiple times.

  364. And Jesus tells Peter,

  365. kind of the leader, so to speak, of the group,

  366. he says, Peter, I'm disappointed in you.

  367. Stay awake and pray so that you don't enter into temptation.

  368. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

  369. I love the last part of that.

  370. And can I just make this application today?

  371. Can I make this application for you?

  372. There's one interpretation of Scripture.

  373. Every passage, there's one incorrect interpretation of Scripture.

  374. As you read through the original manuscript,

  375. and you look at it, what is the Bible teaching here?

  376. But there can be multiple applications

  377. that you take away from a certain passage.

  378. Because we're all different.

  379. The Holy Spirit is working with us differently in every life.

  380. So I want to make this particular application from this passage.

  381. Some of us need to wake up.

  382. Some of us are sleeping through our life with Jesus.

  383. And the devil wants nothing more

  384. than for a Christian to fall asleep.

  385. And just go through life like everybody else.

  386. The Bible tells us, wake up.

  387. Now is the appointed time.

  388. Now it is high time to awake out of sleep,

  389. we read in the book of Romans.

  390. For now, your redemption is nearer than when you first believed.

  391. Jesus is coming back.

  392. We are not promised forever on this earth.

  393. We are promised a wonderful eternity in heaven with God.

  394. But until that time comes,

  395. you and I have a job to do,

  396. and we can't do it if we're asleep.

  397. I'm not talking about not getting your eight hours of sleep at night.

  398. I'm talking about sleeping through your life,

  399. not listening to the Holy Spirit of God,

  400. not ever sharing the gospel with somebody else,

  401. not ever resisting temptation,

  402. just giving in to the lust of the flesh,

  403. the lust of the eyes,

  404. and the bride of life.

  405. The Bible says, wake up!

  406. Because it's time to listen to God

  407. and let God change your life.

  408. Let God change your thinking.

  409. The Holy Spirit is not the problem.

  410. The Spirit is willing,

  411. but the flesh is weak.

  412. But Jesus had to teach those guys

  413. that walked with Him every day

  414. on the most important night of His time on earth.

  415. When He could not sleep,

  416. He knew what was coming.

  417. He had even given them clues of what was coming.

  418. But they fell asleep.

  419. How many of us fall asleep

  420. when God needs us to pray?

  421. How many of us fall asleep

  422. when God needs us to stand strong?

  423. How many of us fall asleep

  424. when God needs us to resist?

  425. How many of us fall asleep

  426. when God needs us to help someone else?

  427. So that's just an application there

  428. that I hope we can take.

  429. Now,

  430. y'all, I think I took out,

  431. I think I messed up one of my slides here

  432. and I apologize for that.

  433. So I'm just going to focus

  434. on the latter part of this verse right here.

  435. Jesus was praying for us

  436. and He said,

  437. I'm not praying that you would take us

  438. out of this world,

  439. but I'm praying that you would protect us,

  440. you and I,

  441. from the evil one.

  442. So that's God's goal,

  443. that's Jesus' goal for you and for me

  444. is to protect us from the evil one.

  445. That's, I think,

  446. why God was,

  447. Jesus was teaching us

  448. in Matthew 6,

  449. Lord,

  450. don't lead us into temptation,

  451. deliver us from the evil one.

  452. Right here He says,

  453. protect them,

  454. Father,

  455. from the evil one.

  456. So that's God's goal for us.

  457. Now,

  458. that leads us into point number two.

  459. Obedience to God's Spirit

  460. can rescue us from temptation.

  461. So that's the theme,

  462. right?

  463. We have temptation first

  464. and then we have deliverance.

  465. So this is the deliverance part.

  466. This is the good part.

  467. We're excited about this.

  468. Obedience to God's Spirit

  469. can rescue us

  470. from temptation.

  471. Let's go to 2 Peter.

  472. 2 Peter 2,

    2 Peter 2:7

  473. verse 7.

  474. 2 Peter 2, 7.

  475. If He rescued righteous Lot,

  476. Y'all remember the story of Lot?

  477. He was a righteous man,

  478. truly a righteous man,

  479. followed God,

  480. but he couldn't resist the flesh.

  481. He couldn't resist

  482. the pride of life,

  483. the lust of the flesh,

  484. the lust of the eyes.

  485. So he kept going to places

  486. where he shouldn't have gone

  487. to set up his domain,

  488. domain to set up

  489. his little mini kingdom there

  490. and eventually it culminated

  491. in him finally begrudgingly

  492. leaving Sodom and Gomorrah,

  493. but his wife stopped

  494. and looked back,

  495. missing that life

  496. she was leaving behind

  497. to follow God

  498. at God's command

  499. and what happened?

  500. Old Testament man,

  501. there's nothing like it.

  502. She was turned into

  503. a pillar of salt.

  504. I mean, just wild things

  505. you can read about

  506. in the Old Testament.

  507. God's way of dealing

  508. with his people back then

  509. was incredible to watch.

  510. So we read about this

  511. reference to Lot

  512. right here all the way

  513. toward the end of the book

  514. in 2 Peter 2,

    2 Peter 2:7

  515. verse 7.

  516. If God rescued righteous Lot,

  517. distressed by the depraved

  518. behavior of the immoral.

  519. Oh, he was distressed,

  520. all right,

  521. but he couldn't walk away from it.

  522. Verse 8,

  523. for as that righteous man

  524. lived among them

  525. day by day,

  526. his righteous soul

  527. was tormented

  528. or vexed

  529. by the lawless deeds

  530. he saw and heard.

  531. Verse 9,

  532. so if he could do that

  533. for Lot,

  534. he could rescue Lot

  535. almost against Lot's will,

  536. then the Lord knows how

  537. to rescue the godly

  538. from trials

  539. and to keep the unrighteous

  540. under punishment

  541. for the day of judgment.

  542. God knows how to rescue us.

  543. So that's the good news.

  544. Obedience to God

  545. can deliver us.

  546. Obedience to God

  547. can rescue us.

  548. 1 Corinthians 10, 13.

  549. No temptation

  550. has overtaken you

  551. that's not common to man.

  552. Remember that Jesus

  553. was tempted?

  554. Jesus was tempted

  555. just like we are

  556. in all three areas,

  557. the lust of the flesh,

  558. the lust of the eyes,

  559. and the pride of life.

  560. When Satan

  561. led him up on that mountain,

  562. he tempted him.

  563. When Jesus was at

  564. his weakest point

  565. after starving

  566. in the wilderness

  567. for 40 days,

  568. then Satan

  569. pounced on him.

  570. Of course,

  571. he wasn't going to

  572. get anywhere with Jesus,

  573. but Jesus wanted to show us,

  574. give us the template

  575. for resisting temptation.

  576. It's by the word of God.

  577. Every time Satan

  578. came at him

  579. with temptation,

  580. he quoted scripture

  581. back to Satan.

  582. The power is in

  583. the word of God.

  584. Jesus was the living

  585. word of God.

  586. But he quoted that word

  587. right back to Satan,

  588. and that's the word

  589. that we have.

  590. The power that Jesus

  591. used to resist temptation

  592. was the very same power

  593. that you and I

  594. have access to.

  595. So no temptation

  596. has overtaken you

  597. or me

  598. that is not already

  599. common to man,

  600. but God is faithful.

  601. And he will not allow you

  602. to be tempted

  603. beyond your ability,

  604. but with the temptation,

  605. he will also provide

  606. the way of escape.

  607. Man, some of the

  608. most reassuring words

  609. in the Bible

  610. that you can read

  611. is this way of escape.

  612. God will provide

  613. a way of escape.

  614. So every time

  615. we are tempted,

  616. number one,

  617. we know it is not

  618. coming from God.

  619. Number two,

  620. we know that God

  621. has provided a way

  622. of escape

  623. so that you and I

  624. can endure

  625. that temptation.

  626. 2 Timothy 4.18,

  627. the Lord will rescue me

  628. from every evil work

  629. and will bring me

  630. safely into his

  631. heavenly kingdom.

  632. Amen.

  633. What a powerful prayer.

  634. I don't think it's wrong

  635. to pray scripture.

  636. I don't think it's

  637. inappropriate to read

  638. things in the word of God

  639. and pray them word for word.

  640. I think that's just fine

  641. if you in your quiet time

  642. want to pray that to God.

  643. God, rescue me

  644. from every evil work

  645. and bring me safely

  646. into your heavenly kingdom.

  647. Amen.

  648. We know that he's

  649. promised to do that.

  650. He will do that.

  651. So how do we resist?

  652. It's through the power

  653. of his word.

  654. 2 Thessalonians 3.3,

  655. kind of the same thing.

  656. I love how many times

  657. he put this in the scriptures

  658. so he can drive

  659. that point home with us.

  660. The Lord is faithful.

  661. He will strengthen you

  662. and guard you

  663. from the evil one.

  664. That's God's desire.

  665. He prayed it to his

  666. father in heaven.

  667. And he wants us

  668. to do that now.

  669. John 17.

  670. This is the passage

  671. we quoted just a minute ago.

  672. And I had these slides

  673. out of order

  674. and I apologize.

  675. This should have been

  676. back there

  677. to kind of help us

  678. transition in

  679. but that's okay.

  680. John 17.

  681. Let's turn there anyway

  682. real quick.

  683. John 17 in verse 6.

  684. Jesus is praying

  685. for his disciples.

  686. We can jump in

  687. and be included

  688. on this prayer.

  689. I have revealed your name,

  690. Jesus says.

  691. I have revealed your name,

  692. Father,

  693. to the people you gave me

  694. from the world.

  695. They were yours

  696. and you gave them to me.

  697. They have kept your word.

  698. Now they know

  699. that everything you have

  700. given is from you

  701. because I have given them

  702. the words you gave me.

  703. They have received them

  704. and they know for certain

  705. that I came from you.

  706. They believe that you sent me.

  707. I pray for them.

  708. And what a powerful thought

  709. that Jesus is praying for us.

  710. This isn't the only time

  711. in scripture

  712. that Jesus assures us

  713. that he is praying for us.

  714. He says,

  715. I pray for them.

  716. I'm not praying for the world

  717. but for those

  718. that you have given me

  719. because they are yours.

  720. Everything I have is yours.

  721. Everything you have is mine

  722. and I am glorified in them.

  723. I am no longer in the world

  724. but they are in the world

  725. and I am coming to you.

  726. By the way,

  727. you want a little clue

  728. as to why we believe

  729. in the Trinity?

  730. A three-part God,

  731. Father, Son,

  732. and Holy Spirit?

  733. Right here we believe

  734. that the Father and Son

  735. are co-equal

  736. because right here

  737. did you see in verse 10?

  738. Everything I have is yours.

  739. Everything you have is mine.

  740. They are on equal footing

  741. with one another.

  742. Equally God,

  743. all three parts.

  744. Different roles,

  745. different personalities sometimes

  746. as they express themselves

  747. but they are all one God.

  748. All co-equal with one another.

  749. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  750. So, let's jump back in.

  751. Verse 11.

  752. I'm no longer in the world

  753. but they are in the world

  754. and I am coming to you.

  755. Holy Father,

  756. protect them by your name

  757. that you have given me

  758. so that they may be one

  759. as we are one.

  760. Just as the Father and Son

  761. are united,

  762. are one,

  763. God wants his people

  764. to be united

  765. and one

  766. and he wants to protect us

  767. from Satan trying to mess that up.

  768. Satan trying to get in between us

  769. and drive us apart.

  770. So, he's praying for us

  771. that God would protect us.

  772. Jump down, if you would,

  773. to verse 15.

  774. I'm not praying

  775. that you take them out of the world.

  776. We read it just a moment ago.

  777. But that you protect them

  778. from the evil one.

  779. They're not of the world

  780. just as I am not of the world.

  781. Sanctify them by the truth.

  782. Your truth,

  783. your word,

  784. is truth.

  785. As you sent me into the world,

  786. I also have sent them into the world.

  787. That's us, y'all.

  788. He sent us into this world.

  789. I sanctify myself for them

  790. so that they also

  791. may be sanctified

  792. by the truth.

  793. God wants to protect us

  794. from the evil one

  795. because we are here

  796. for a great purpose.

  797. He has sent us

  798. into the world

  799. as his light.

  800. If the light

  801. is extinguished

  802. by the power of darkness,

  803. if the light is hidden

  804. by the power of darkness

  805. and us giving in

  806. to temptation,

  807. it extinguishes that light.

  808. It hides that light

  809. and nobody can see

  810. that light anymore

  811. because all they see

  812. is us giving in

  813. repeatedly,

  814. continually

  815. to the same temptations

  816. that they give in to.

  817. And there's no difference.

  818. There's no change.

  819. There's nothing special

  820. about the power of God

  821. in our lives.

  822. So there's much at stake.

  823. There's much at stake.

  824. That's why, once again,

  825. we're going back to it.

  826. Can we read this together, please?

  827. Don't copy the behavior

  828. and customs of this world.

  829. Here we go.

  830. Ready?

  831. But let God transform you

  832. into a new person

  833. by changing the way you think.

  834. This is my prayer for you.

  835. It's my prayer for me

  836. and my family

  837. on a daily basis

  838. that God would change

  839. the way we think

  840. so that we would not

  841. so easily give in

  842. to the sins

  843. that easily

  844. pull us off track,

  845. the sins that easily

  846. beset us,

  847. that we wouldn't give in

  848. to temptation.

  849. So that's the takeaway.

  850. Do I resist temptation

  851. through prayer

  852. or through my own strength?

  853. Do I resist temptation

  854. on my knees?

  855. You don't always have to be

  856. on your knees.

  857. You could be driving

  858. in your car,

  859. you could be at work,

  860. you could be engaged

  861. in another activity,

  862. but God

  863. is just a moment away.

  864. He's always there.

  865. Do I resist temptation

  866. through His power

  867. or through my power?

  868. I want to leave you

  869. with the words

  870. to this song

  871. by Phil Wickham,

  872. great Christian songwriter

  873. out there.

  874. He said,

  875. so when I fight,

  876. I'll fight on my knees

  877. with my hands lifted high.

  878. Oh God,

  879. the battle belongs to you.

  880. Whether you're fighting

  881. against someone else

  882. trying to hurt you

  883. or you're fighting

  884. against temptation

  885. trying to pull you off track,

  886. fight that battle

  887. on your knees.

  888. I can personally testify,

  889. when I try to resist temptation

  890. with my own strength,

  891. I don't win.

  892. Now you can put your name

  893. in the middle of that too.

  894. When you resist temptation

  895. on your own,

  896. you don't win,

  897. do you?

  898. But when we fight

  899. through the power of God,

  900. He wins.

  901. He always wins.

  902. So if we want

  903. to defeat temptation,

  904. let's go to the book.

  905. Let's go to our knees

  906. in prayer.

  907. And let's ask

  908. for God's help

  909. He wants to help us.

  910. And He says

  911. to come to Him

  912. and ask Him for help.

  913. God, deliver us from this.

  914. Would you pray with me?

  915. God, I pray that

  916. You would deliver us

  917. from sin.

  918. I know beyond

  919. a shadow of doubt

  920. there is sin

  921. in our church, God.

  922. Because any time

  923. you get a group of people

  924. together in this world,

  925. there's going to be

  926. plenty of sin

  927. represented there.

  928. We are all sinners.

  929. We all have our

  930. pet sins

  931. that we can't seem

  932. to shake.

  933. Whether it's pride,

  934. whether it's lust

  935. of the flesh,

  936. whether it's lust

  937. of the eyes,

  938. the pride of life,

  939. whatever category

  940. really trips us up

  941. the most,

  942. there's something

  943. in there that just

  944. maybe multiple things

  945. that we just can't seem

  946. to get victory over.

  947. God, reveal to us

  948. how much

  949. You want to give us

  950. the victory.

  951. Change the way

  952. we think

  953. by submitting

  954. to Your Spirit,

  955. by actually

  956. spending time

  957. in Your Word,

  958. by actually

  959. going to You

  960. in prayer

  961. and not just

  962. talking about it,

  963. but actually

  964. taking the time

  965. to re-center

  966. ourselves

  967. on You.

  968. We'll give You

  969. all the glory, God.

  970. We're not going to say,

  971. man, I finally

  972. kicked this habit

  973. that I've been

  974. trying to kick.

  975. No, it was Jesus.

  976. It was Your power.

  977. You did a transforming

  978. work in us.

  979. Let that be

  980. our testimony here.

  981. God, if there's

  982. someone who needs

  983. You to deliver

  984. them from sin,

  985. someone needs

  986. to put their faith

  987. in You

  988. for the first time.

  989. Just last week,

  990. we had someone

  991. raise their hand

  992. and You've been

  993. working on them,

  994. You've been drawing

  995. them, and they've

  996. placed their faith

  997. in You

  998. for the first time.

  999. We want to see

  1000. that happen

  1001. as often as

  1002. you're willing

  1003. to let us

  1004. see that.

  1005. So right now,

  1006. I'll ask again

  1007. with our heads

  1008. bowed,

  1009. if there's

  1010. somebody else

  1011. who'd like

  1012. to slip

  1013. your hand

  1014. up and say,

  1015. I want to

  1016. place my faith

  1017. in Jesus.

  1018. I want to

  1019. turn from my

  1020. sin and turn

  1021. to Jesus.

  1022. Thank You.

  1023. Thank You.

  1024. I want to

  1025. pray for that one,

  1026. God, that You

  1027. would give them

  1028. understanding

  1029. to how much

  1030. they need You.

  1031. Give them

  1032. full understanding

  1033. of what it means

  1034. to be a child

  1035. of God.

  1036. For the rest

  1037. of us, God,

  1038. I pray that You

  1039. would continue

  1040. to work in our

  1041. hearts.

  1042. How many of you

  1043. would slip your

  1044. hand up and just

  1045. say, pray for me?

  1046. I'm working on

  1047. something, God's

  1048. convicted me of

  1049. something, and I

  1050. just need prayer.

  1051. I'll pray for You.

  1052. Thank you.

  1053. Thank you.

  1054. Thank you.

  1055. All over.

  1056. God, You see the

  1057. hands.

  1058. You know what's

  1059. going on, Lord.

  1060. You know what's

  1061. going on in every

  1062. heart.

  1063. You've been with

  1064. us every step of

  1065. this journey.

  1066. I pray that we

  1067. would fight this

  1068. battle on our

  1069. knees, not in

  1070. our own strength.

  1071. It's in Jesus' name

  1072. I pray.

  1073. Amen.

  1074. Brother Greg's

  1075. going to lead us

  1076. through a song.

  1077. I'm going to be

  1078. down front if you'd

  1079. like to meet me

  1080. down here for

  1081. prayer, if you'd

  1082. like to come pray

  1083. quietly by yourself,

  1084. that's what these

  1085. steps are for.

1086. If you'd like to go

  1087. to the back and

  1088. find a quiet room,

  1089. our campus is here

  1090. for you to pray.

  1091. Stay out of the

  1092. children's area because

  1093. that's where they're

  1094. going, but y'all just

1095. use a few minutes to

  1096. pray here.
